et me tell you a story about the man behind the slinky. In 1943 a guy called Richard James invented a pre-compressed helical spring which looked cool as it stretched down steps. For two years he went from store to store to try and sell it as a toy and after dozens of knockbacks, the Gimbels department store in Philadelphia agreed to stock it in November 1945. The toys stayed on those shelves until just before Christmas because a spring in a box didn’t look like much fun to kids. Fed up with the lack of sales, Richard James drove to the store, set up some steps and displayed what the slinky could do. In 90 minutes he sold 400 of them and a craze was born. In the next year, a million were sold at a dollar apiece. Why am I telling you this story? Because a good idea is not always enough. This week we look at the next generation of entrepreneurs on the Sunshine Coast and what’s being done to help turn their thought bubbles into success stories. Enjoy.

QUICK CHAT
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR Maya Gurry of Marcoola Beach is a mother of two and director of Fresh PR. She believes you can have it all, just not at the same time. FIRST JOB?
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
Working in a bakery and then an icecream shop – I think that’s where I got my passion for baked goods, gelati and all the other decadent treats I should eat less of.
I was fortunate enough to grow up with very open-minded and encouraging parents who made me believe I could do anything I set my mind to – there weren’t many epiphanies but some bold decisions that brought me to where I am today.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My husband, two pretty awesome kids, 32 tropical fish and a spider that lives in the bathroom called Kevin.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
FIRST CAR? I worked at Volkswagen so my first love affair was with a Golf I and there have been many VWs in my life since then.
I’m enjoying a beautiful summer’s day on the beach with my family. I still pinch myself occasionally
FAVOURITE BOOK?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
It has to be The Count of Monte Cristo. There aren’t many books I like to read more than once but I keep going back to my beloved Count.
FAVOURITE SONG? I can go from Melody Gardot on a lazy Sunday morning to Pete Murray and the White Stripes in the afternoon. Then the kids get involved for disco night and anything goes.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? We arrived 12 years ago, on the way to Sydney to find corporate jobs and continue the rat race we’d left behind in London. However the year of backpacking on our way here gave us great perspective and by the time we experienced the Coast lifestyle, we were hooked.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? The beautiful natural environment, a burgeoning local economy with great potential, some amazing people doing incredible things and a lifestyle that leaves us feeling like every weekend is a holiday.
myweeklypreview.com.au
7.indd 1
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I love first bay in Coolum and nothing beats chilling at one of our great cafes with good coffee and good company – my favs include The Caf in Coolum, Bulli in Marcoola and Waiting for Huey across the road from our office in Town of Seaside.
I love what’s happening in Ocean Street and it would be great to see a few more entertainment precincts around the Coast – food offerings from around the world, live music and a good vibe.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Our guest room sees a steady stream of visitors and we love playing tour guide. Our non-negotiables include a walk up Mount Coolum, koala spotting in Noosa National Park, driving up the beach to Double Island Point, fish and chips on Mooloolaba spit, a visit to the hinterland and sundowners on our local beach.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? A good friend told me that ‘you can have it all, just not at the same time’. I realised that all our choices have a consequence so you need to decide what really matters in the current phase of your life and embrace it 100 per cent. This advice helped me reconcile being a career woman, a mother, a wife and a friend and while the superhero cape comes in handy, you can’t be all things to all people and do it well.
Mobile phones at dinner parties. As much as I love how connected we are through social media and technology, I love nothing more than good conversation over dinner with friends without someone referring to Google, Facebook or YouTube.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t take life too seriously and don’t sweat the small stuff. Having said that, I’m not sure my 18-year-old self would have listened.
TEA OR COFFEE? Flat white for my caffeine fix and rooibos tea to keep me in my happy place.
NRL OR AFL? Bad question for someone who grew up in South Africa. Rugby union is probably the closest but I had a cricket addiction growing up so that would be my first choice. And you can’t go past State of Origin for team spirit and good banter – Go Queensland!

QUEENSLAND RECREATIONAL FISHING GUIDE
Fishing is without a doubt a popular recreational activity here on the Sunshine Coast. With winter upon us, anglers are gearing up for the upcoming snapper season. So, it’s no better time than to brush up on the rules and regulations of this much-loved pastime. Users have access to up-to-date information on the state’s recreational fishing rules including size and possession limits, species identification, closed seasons, closed water and stocked impoundment maps, angler diary, and access to tide and weather information. This app is free and available on Android and IOS.
NEW GALAXY S6
Some critics say it’s the most advanced smartphone ever made and reports indicate more than 10 million of Samsung’s Galaxy S6 were sold in the month following its release. The phone has an improved camera with new shortcut key, a glass and aluminium frame and wireless charging capabilities. Another highlight is the improved f ngerprint sensor, which will also play a major role in the company’s soon-to-be released payment platform, Samsung Pay. The more expensive Edge model has a curved screen similar to the 2014 Galaxy Note Edge. A downside to the new smartphone is the absence of a microSD card slot. The Galaxy S6 starts at $999. Launched in September 2014, the podcast is hosted by Alex Blumberg who made the decision to document the start up of his own company, Gimlet Media. Season one follows his story and details his first business pitch to Twitter and Instagram investor Chris Sacca. It addresses issues such as company setback, recovering from breaking point and marrying technology with content. Season two launched last month and this time Blumberg is joined by co-host Lisa Chow to follow new company Dating Ring. The founders are women in their 20s, outsiders in the male-dominated world of Silicon Valley. Tune in to hear about the challenges they face along the way.

DRIVE TO SUCCEED

asting a shadow over our sunny beaches, the region’s youth unemployment figure is a constant reminder that while the Sunshine Coast offers an enviable lifestyle, it is failing many of our young. At around 14 per cent, the youth unemployment rate is considerably lower here than in other regions in the state (Townsville, Ipswich and Logan are in the high teens, nearby Wide Bay is at nearly 20 per cent, while the rate in Cairns exceeds 21 per cent). But it’s little consolation to local young job seekers. National welfare agency the Brotherhood of St Laurence reported earlier this year that one in five unemployed Australians is a teenager. Brotherhood chief Tony Nicholson said in a statement, “Youth unemployment is a key intergenerational issue. We need to tap into the productive potential of young people to secure future economic prosperity. Whether as policymakers, parents or concerned community members, we also have obligations to the emerging generation to better build their capacity to secure work so they can build a good life for themselves.” Our region, thankfully, is brimming with business leaders who recognise the
10 My Weekly Preview | May 29, 2015

problem and are doing something about it, and they’re seeing in many young people an entrepreneurial drive that provides a pleasant contrast to the unemployment figures.
COMMUNITY FOCUS
Local businessman Ted O’Brien’s solution is Generation Innovation. “We know that youth unemployment has been an issue on the Sunshine Coast for a long time,” O’Brien tells MWP. “It is a statistic that tells a story well beyond unemployment. It is almost like the youth unemployment rate is a proxy for a host of challenges facing young people on the Coast; it goes beyond a lack of jobs.” O’Brien wanted to help, and this desire “gave birth to what ended up evolving into Generation Innovation”. “We as citizens and a local community can place more responsibility and rely less on government to address big social problems, and in a way Generation Innovation is there for a case study for rebuilding that new type of civil society where citizens, grassroots community groups and business can all pull together in a creative way to solve a problem.” O’Brien adds, “Upon having this idea for using youth entrepreneurship for
dealing with youth unemployment, I immediately started engaging with the community. I saw youth service organisations, schools, chappies, employment agencies, the Innovation Centre, business people and chambers of commerce. It helped to fine tune the concept and create a genuine community momentum. This is community driven. The trick is to unite different aspects of the community and that took some time.” Through that process “we decided that our first initiative would be the Generation Innovation Challenge”. The challenge was launched in February, inviting 15-to 25-year-old budding entrepreneurs to sign up.
Business people were invited to become investors. “While we were doing that, behind the scenes I was dealing with youth service providers who were also identifying young people in the same age bracket who they saw potential in.” Some of these, he says, were at-risk teens. The process involved the participants self-selecting teams to create a business. The teams each had mentors, plus strategy and marketing experts to assist in conceptualising their ideas and to survey the marketplace. O’Brien says while they started with eight teams, just three teams were ready to take on the challenge. The three teams were Harry Thompson from smoothie van concept
“The health food market is so huge. Major companies are doing smoothies. But Swift Smoothies is a unique concept” Harry Thompson

Swift Smoothies; Issy McSwain and Jack Smith, whose idea Koi Krew provides safe spaces for young people to connect with each other; and Holographic Estate, an app which helps buyers and renters visualise their new homes. This team comprised Mackenzie Reardon, Sean Phillips and Hamish Caulfield. The teams raised capital through crowd funding. While each team is now off and running, the Generation Innovation Challenge also called for a people’s favourite. “That team receives an extra Generation Innovation start-up package which includes services that start-ups need to get off the ground,” O’Brien says. It was 17-year-old Harry Thompson’s Swift Smoothies that won the vote. The grade 12 student says the idea of opening a juice bar was one his father had 15 years ago when the family moved to the Sunshine Coast from Rockhampton. The idea was forgotten until recently, when Thompson says he and his father saw a drive-through coffee shop and considered the concept of a drive-through smoothie bar. “I then saw an ad on TV for [Generation Innovation] and my mother turned the volume up and said I needed to see this. I then went straight online and applied.” He says his father and his Generation Innovation mentors Geoff Glanville and Peter Ferguson have provided invaluable support in turning the idea from a drive-through to a smoothie van. “I think the health food market is so huge,” Thompson says. “Major companies are doing smoothies. [But Swift Smoothies] is a unique concept.” He says while the market is very populated with coffee vans, no one else is doing a smoothie van – “it’s a good alternative”. Thompson is now planning to apply for his food licence and purchase everything he needs to launch his van. He’s hoping he can then turn the business into a franchise. “All three teams did wonderfully well – it was a close vote,” says O’Brien. “In
Harry you have everything that Generation Innovation wants to showcase to the Coast. A passionate, hardworking young fellow who really is prepared to put his shoulder to the wheel.” About Generation Innovation, O’Brien adds, “I didn’t want this to be just a feel-good exercise. This is about connecting young people with the real market. We are giving them a lot more than encouragement. The three teams are fantastic young people who only a few months ago wouldn’t have dreamed [they would be starting a business].” “As much as there are fantastic outcomes through the Generation Innovation Challenge, the primary object is not just to set up new businesses. The primary objective is to showcase a series of local heroes out of everyday young people who have leveraged their passions
Lee, a 27-year-old student of journalism, says the event was a “rollercoaster”. Lee’s original concept was to create a wedding destinations website “that I could use to promote smaller local businesses. Then we had a launch of Startup Weekend and there were a couple of mentors there and I talked to one of the mentors, so I told him my idea and he thought that was really cool.” Hitched In connects brides with planners, and then the planners are connected to other industry professionals. The aim is to create better communication during the wedding planning process. Lee was encouraged to take part in the weekend as part of her University of the Sunshine Coast entrepreneurship course. Yes, you can learn how to be an entrepreneur. Retha Scheepers, a lecturer
“Being on the Coast it is hard to get a job. You have to have support and make sure you are still positive” Jessie Lee and abilities to create their own opportunities.”
MAKING A START
Jessie Lee knows about creating her own opportunities. As part of a team called Hitched In, Lee won the recent Startup Weekend. An event held annually at the Innovation Centre, the weekend invites anyone with an entrepreneurial inclination to pitch their business idea and receive feedback from their peers. This year’s event featured 85 participants with 43 pitches and 22 coaches in what the centre describes as “a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing and market validation”.
in entrepreneurship at USC, should know. “I think there are a lot of people who have lots of ideas and they are often discouraged, but if you show them the steps, they can move their idea forward. “It is a great learning event,” Scheepers says of Startup Weekend. “Often people will come and their ideas won’t get picked, but they stick with it and get a lot out of it. The weekend is full-on. Things that would take you six months to do [alone] you do in a weekend. It is intense and emotional.” But it does generate many ideas and kickstart many new businesses, and it helps foster a strong entrepreneurial community in the region. For Sunshine Coast residents with an
idea, help is at hand. “There is a lot of support available,” says Scheepers. “It is obviously a courageous journey but there are a lot more resources today than in the past. We know a lot more.” She urges people to connect with others, because job hunting and starting a business can be very lonely.
FINDING SUPPORT
It is this sense of aloneness that so many young people feel when hunting for a job or an opportunity. “I know from previous experience it [finding a job] is hard,” says Lee. “I live in Noosa and definitely in Noosa unless you know someone you aren’t going to get a job, unless you come up with your own business. “Being on the Coast it is hard to get a job and I think a lot of people get their heart broken. You have to have support and make sure you are still positive.” O’Brien and others like him are providing this support, especially to young people without family connections. “We have thousands of young people on the Coast who have been sapped of hope,” he tells MWP. With the Generation Innovation Challenge, an event he plans to hold annually, his aim is to bring some hope not just to the young people involved, but to other young people on the Coast who are constantly told there are no jobs for them. “The objective is to inspire young people to create their own opportunities. There is hope and there is good cause for optimism.” It’s important, he says, to show young people there are plenty of people in their corner. “My background has been a global one dealing with big companies … sitting in their boardrooms and strategising about innovation. The creativity you see in 15-year-olds is no less [than I have seen in those boardrooms].” “Every young person has genius, but they lack three things – money, experience and a network. We are bringing those things to them.”

DON’T MISS THIS!
Financial Review, 29th April, 2015
In the heady days of the 1980’s a $1 million dollar deposit in the bank, would have produced around $140,000 income. For the same amount we have seen the income fall from $60,000 in 2008 to $35,000 now! That’s a fall of 75 percent!

Low interest rates hurting retirement plans: RBA The Australian, 28th April, 2015
As Glenn Stevens (our Reserve Bank Governor) points out, interest rates are; “Not just the lowest in living memory, but in all likelihood the lowest ever in human history!” Retirees relying on cash investments are finding they have no alternative but to eat into their precious nest egg. The question on everyone’s mind is, “How can we fund our Retirement and keep pace with the relentless rise in the cost of living?”
On Wednesday, 3rd June at 6pm we are holding an investment forum that will focus on managing your investments in retirement in this new low interest rate environment.

SHOW ME THE MONEY

In scenes reminiscent of the original political satire Yes Minister – it has been revealed the new Sunshine Coast Public Hospital was given just enough funds by the previous state government to be built – but not enough to accept patients. Queensland Health Minister Cameron Dick says the former LNP administration has left a billion dollar shortfall to run the hospital. The Opposition has rubbished the claims.
Ted O’Brien fell just 53 votes short against Clive Palmer in the 2013 federal election – LNP members have now given him a shot at redemption. O’Brien has defeated four other candidates to become the party’s candidate for Fairfax – the most marginal seat in the country.

FAREWELL FLYING FOXES
Sunshine Coast Council has begun the non-lethal dispersal of f ying foxes at Coolum Beach. Dispersal is only used as a last resort and includes making noise, smoke and light at sunrise to deter f ying foxes from returning for an evening feed. It’s hoped the dispersal will provide at least short-term relief for residents.
CONSUMERS CONFIDENT
Queensland consumer conf dence has hit an 18-month high. The Westpac-Melbourne Institute Consumer Sentiment Index shows Queensland recorded the second highest rise in consumer conf dence of any Australian mainland state. Along with New South Wales, Queensland was the only other state where the index rose above the neutral level of 100.
HELP SAVE KOALAS The community is being asked to have its say on the Sunshine Coast Council’s f ve-year action plan to guide the management and protection of our koala population. The Draft Koala Conservation Plan contains 30 actions to be delivered by 2020. It’s estimated the koala contributes $1.1 billion to the Australian tourism industry. Community consultation will close on June 26 – sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Quick dry
Scrubbing up
When you take the time to polish your nails, you want them to dry quickly so you can get on with your day. To speed up the drying process, after you’ve applied the last coat, dip your tips into a bowl of iced water for a couple of minutes. Or, have the hairdryer at the ready on the cold setting and give your nails a quick blast to help set the polish. Always wait a good two minutes between coats to let the layers dry properly. And remember, if your polish is getting old, throw it away. Older polish takes longer to dry. So, what colours do we recommend for winter? It’s all about pastels and fun shades, so go for pinks, pretty purples and softer blues and greens. Try Essie’s Play Date, $16.95, or OPI’s My Dogsled is a Hybrid, $19.95.
Grab a body scrub to keep your skin smooth over winter. Try Kiehl’s Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub, $30, The Body Shop Mango Body Scrub, $23.95, or St Ives Fresh Skin Invigorating Apricot Scrub, $9.99.
LASH OUT Want a mascara that really does oes deliver on the promise of incredible volume, curl and definition? Try Too Faced’s Better than Sex Mascara, $29.. One application will give you that super-sexy false eyelash look. Go to mecca.com.au for stockists.

TIP
Before creating your smoky eye, moisturise the eye area. You’ll find that when you line the lid with a pencil it will smudge nicely due to the moisture in your skin.
Soothing solution The prevalence of eczema is on the rise. In fact, according to beautydirectory.com.au, an incredible 33 per cent of Australians suffer from the condition. But French skincare company La Roche-Posay has just released a moisturiser to help. The Lipikar Baume AP+, $39.95 for 400ml, helps to replenish the good fats in eczema-affected skin, while reducing redness and itching, and balancing the skin’s bacterial ecosystem. MY LIFE
PALEO + VEGAN = PEGAN
HORMONE HEALTH
Follow a vegan diet? Or is paleo more your thing? If you like the idea of both, you’re in luck. The latest health craze to hit the US combines the two, and the Pegan diet is tipped to be the next big thing. Paleo focuses on foods that were hunted and gathered by ancestors, such as meat, fish, eggs, nuts, fruit and good fats, while a vegan diet is based on grains, fruit, nuts and seeds, with zero animal products. The plant-rich Pegan diet incorporates protein, good fats and grains but avoids dairy, gluten and sugar. It was developed by Dr Mark Hyman, from the Cleveland Clinic Centre for Functional Medicine. HYMAN’S 10 PRINCIPLES FOR FOLLOWING THE PEGAN DIET ARE: 1. Focus on foods with a low glycemic load. 2. Fill your plate with vegies. 3. Eat the right fats. 4. Treat meat as a side dish. 5. Choose sustainably raised or grass-fed sources. 6. Avoid dairy. 7. Say no to gluten, and cut down on other wholegrains. 8. Limit legumes. 9. Have sugar only on (very) special occasions. 10. Banish genetically modified foods.
FIT TIP If you’re trying to get motivated to do some early morning exercise but f nd it hard to get out of bed in the morning, try sleeping in your gym clothes. Pop your alarm in your gym shoes on the other side of the room, so you have to get out of bed to turn it off, and you’ll be out of the house before you know it.
Healthy hormones lead to a happy life, writes naturopath Jodi Chapman.
H
ormones have the capacity not only for reproduction but to produce energy, boost mood, and produce thought and brain function. They slowly decline as we age, having an impact on every movement through your entire life. PMS, menopause, MANopause, adrenal fatigue, and many more hormonal conditions may affect your ability to be happy, with symptoms including sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, insomnia, weight gain, sexual function, hot flushing, infertility, fatigue and memory loss. There are, however, many things you can do to increase your chances of producing an abundance of healthy hormones if you make a few simple changes in your lifestyle. 1. Hormones are made from the HDL cholesterol, derived from good fats,
WIN! $1.5M
and converts to good cholesterol when we reduce the carbohydrates in the diet. So eating a diet high in protein and good fats, and low in carbs is essential. 2. Reduce stress: it produces the hormone cortisol, reducing production of your reproductive hormones, creating imbalance. 3. Eat cruciferous vegetables: cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower and brussels sprouts, as they help metabolise hormones and reduce the risk of hormonal cancer in men and women. 4. Exercise, especially weight training, helps the production, metabolism and removal of excess hormones from the system, keeping hormones balanced, and slows the ageing process. MY OPINION
SPEAK YOUR MIND
ONE BIG JUGGLING ACT
If you’re in favour of more development on the Coast, it’s time to stand up and be heard, writes Andrew Stevens.
Sami Muirhead shares the ups and downs of trying to balance full-time work with raising children.
I
have been doing a lot of soul searching lately as to what is the right balance between work and staying home and (working) raising your kids. My boss knows I am having this mental boxing match with myself, so do not panic. Most mums have this psychological challenge of parent guilt, and a surprising number of dads have it too. It’s the most common conversation I have with other mums. No matter what they earn, if they leave the house to work or not, what their age, profession or personality type. I have an image of being a full-time stay at home mum and making play dough from scratch, sitting in the garden with my little people with the sunshine on our backs. Then I go inside and cook up some soul-nurturing meals for our little family in our perfectly clean house. You get the drift. And then I have a few days at home and realise the reality is cleaning floors, baby bottoms and high chairs. Ita Buttrose, the amazing journalist, gave this insight about getting the balance right to a Sunshine Coast audience a few years back: “If you want to run in the jungle, then expect to run in the jungle and learn how to take knocks in the jungle and keep up with the pace of the jungle and deal with whatever the jungle dishes out. But you have to want to play in the jungle in the first place.”
Ita was talking about the battle of our minds and bodies as we try to split our time between raising kids and raising an income. Running in the jungle is fun. You get to hang out with adults and do some great mentally fulfilling things and you get to wear high heels. But it takes a lot of mental mind games to run in the jungle. You have to at least appear to know what the heck is going on in the world. I do not have any wise words of advice. I wish someone would give me some. I do know our family sits down every six months and looks at everyone’s needs and how happy our kids seem. We ask, would more time at day care benefit them? Or, would they be happier at home in their pyjamas watching Play School and playing games? I work full-time at a radio station and I have very understanding bosses. I am often late to work and early to leave. The most common question I am asked is, “How do you do it?” Well, not very well. At work I am thinking how we have no milk in the fridge at home. At home I am thinking how I didn’t send those emails. It’s a day by day deal. But for now I want to keep running in the jungle. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
I
am often asked the question by colleagues, “Why should I invest into the Sunshine Coast economy when the population is not interested in progress?” Typically, I challenge this presumption, however after further discussion, it becomes difficult to counteract the material they recite from local media and various social media sites. We apparently don’t want an international airport, nor five star tourist facilities or even sustainable power generation. Apparently we are a ‘community of villages’ and we want to stay that way. Well time moves on and development does not stop once the new residential estates that many of these anti-progress activists reside in are completed. I want my teenage children to have the ability to study, find jobs and raise families right here on the Coast. However, if the vocal minority continue to influence our decision makers there will be no progress, no new opportunities, and we’ll lose a whole generation of intelligent young people who have to relocate to bigger cities or commute to Brisbane. Well, I won’t cop that. In my opinion, it is time the debate was balanced with greater input by those in our community who embrace progress. The desire to maintain the Sunshine Coast’s character as a ‘community of villages’ is continually used as an excuse to stop projects. As a town planner, this
concept has always puzzled me. When I was at school here on the Coast, the villages of Golden Beach, Caloundra, Mooloolaba, Buderim, and Maroochydore were certainly separate villages with plenty of open space between them. Moving forward 30 years, these localities are now one continuous urban area known as the Sunshine Coast. This continuous sprawl of suburbs accommodates more than 70 per cent of the Coast’s population and is now the 11th largest council area in Australia. This population is also represented by eight out of the eleven councillors elected to govern our entire region. So why do decisions continue to be made in favour of the minority groups who make up less than 30 per cent of our population? The principle reason is that the vocal minority is making a lot of noise. At a recent council meeting numerous councillors publicly acknowledged the ‘venomous bullying tactics’ adopted by those opposing a project, yet they still voted in favour of the vocal minority groups. So how can we turn the tide and redirect the swell of momentum? It is quite simple: be heard. Let your local council and government representative know where you stand on issues so that a balanced discussion can take place. Andrew Stevens is the Sunshine Coast president of the Urban Development Institute of Australia

n hindsight, it was probably fitting for a four-metre long olive python to roam freely across the grounds of Cicada Lodge in rainbow serpent country. But that didn’t make running into her any less startling. Esmerelda is basking in the lateafternoon sunshine when a surprised guest spots her peeping out from below
the boardwalk. She graces us with a photo opp before slithering off under the cabin, and we return to the poolside deck as the sun dips behind the ridgeline of Nitmiluk Gorge (formerly Katherine Gorge) and a dusky orange halo silhouettes the treeline. Our complimentary wine and mezze

platter is waiting and we attack it with gusto while we talk about our brush with the wild here in Nitmiluk National Park. About three and a half hours from Darwin, this park with its interconnected series of 13 gorges is one of the Top End’s most spectacular sites. Nitmiluk is the local indigenous Jawoyn word for “place of the cicada”. Natural rock pools and rapids separate the gorges, and the waterway running through them is known to the Jawoyn as the Blue-Winged Kookaburra River. The traditional owners believe the rainbow serpent carved his way through the rock, creating the gorges in his own image and that he still resides there. It took 11 years for the Jawoyn to finally win native title over the area in 1989, which they have cared for over thousands of years. ”Jawoyn people don’t feel they own the land but rather that they belong to it, or are a part of it,’’ our guide Tom says as we motor down the first two gorges on the Nitnit Dreaming cruise. “They view the land as their mother and they claimed back official responsibility to make sure she’s looked after.” Now they jointly manage the park along with the Northern Territory
government and Nitmiluk Tours operate all the accommodation and activities. Cruising is a quick way to see the gorge but for those with more time, the better option is hiring a canoe and taking to the water in order to feel utterly dwarfed by those soaring sheer rock walls.
GETTING THERE
Brisbane has direct flights to Darwin via Qantas, Virgin and Jetstar, with connections available from other cities. Nitmiluk National Park is about 30 minutes drive from Katherine, or three and a half hours from Darwin. Cars can be hired at Darwin International Airport.
PLAYING THERE
The two-gorge cruise operates year-round and costs $84 for an adult and $42 for a child. There are three cruises available – gorge, dawn, and sunset. Kayaks can be hired for half-day, full-day or overnight trips. Prices start at $40 per person. Visit: nitmiluktours.com.au. Nitmiluk Tours also manages accommodation in the park, from unpowered camping from $16.
STAYING THERE
Cicada Lodge is offering a special package online for $695 twin share including one night’s accommodation and three course dinner. Valid June 1 to August 31, 2015. Visit: cicadalodge. com.au/package/indulgent-escape/.

COWAN LOSES APPEAL
B
ruce Morcombe says he hopes his son Daniel’s killer does it tough in prison after the appeal against the 20-year minimum sentenced was dismissed by Brisbane’s Supreme Court. Brett Peter Cowan who abducted and murdered 13-year-old Daniel more than 11 years ago, will now remain behind bars. “Eleven-and-a-half years ago was the last time Denise and I and the family saw Daniel,” Bruce Morcombe says. “We don’t forget, and we hope Mr Cowan doesn’t forget. “His actions have resulted in him spending a minimum of 20 years in jail and we hope they’re tough.” Denise Morcombe, who was on a flight and did not attend the judgment delivery, tweeted: “May Daniel now rest in peace, Australian children can breathe easily now Cowan remains behind bars,” ending the message with a “good riddance”. However, the family’s long ordeal might not yet be over after Cowan’s lawyer flagged a possible High Court appeal against his conviction. “Our reaction at this stage is to simply seek further instructions from our client,”
defence lawyer Tim Meehan said. “Available to him is a special leave application to the High Court and that’s what we’ll be pursuing – his instructions in relation to what we do from here.” Queensland’s Court of Appeal upheld the guilty verdict handed down by a jury at Cowan’s trial in March last year. Court of Appeal president Margaret McMurdo and Justice Hugh Fraser found there had been no miscarriage of justice in a decision to allow into evidence Cowan’s video-recorded confession, and in the judge’s directions to the jury. The judges also rejected a bid by the former attorney-general to extend Cowan’s minimum non-parole period above 20 years. In her written reasons Justice McMurdo said there was no precedent for it in Queensland. Cowan, a repeat child sex offender, was arrested in August 2011, almost eight years after Daniel was abducted from the side of a Sunshine Coast hinterland road. He was caught by an elaborate police sting in which undercover officers posing as gangsters tricked him into confessing and leading them to Daniel’s remains in the Glass House Mountains. AAP

PROFILE
MUSIC FROM THE HEART
Sunshine Coast ambient music artists Sacred Earth are taking their healing music around the world. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
T
hey’re one of the Coast’s biggest musical success stories but you won’t find them playing at bars and clubs. Instead, Prem and Jethro Williams of Sacred Earth live quiet lives in tune with nature, performing their enchanting soundscapes to a loyal tribe of fans in community halls, yoga retreats, churches and holistic health festivals here and overseas. Having sold more than a quarter of a million albums, they’re Australia’s top selling artists in the ambient music genre and are currently on tour to launch their long awaited eighth album, kuTumba. “kuTumba is Nepali for ‘family’,” Prem says. “We’ve had three years break from doing any recording because we’ve been having babies, so we essentially wanted to capture that journey on an album. It’s a celebration of creation of new family. It’s a really joyful, beautiful album. “Quite a few of the songs we’ve been playing for a couple of years now but haven’t had the space to record them and people have only been able to hear them live, like Clare’s Song. We’ve also done our first ever film clip, which we filmed in Cooran. “We’ve been a bit reclusive and we decided to put ourselves out there a little bit more and give our fans a deeper look into our lives.” True to the album’s theme, it was recorded at their home studio in Eumundi with their children playing around them. The three children – Jasi, nine months, Jai, three and Prem’s daughter from a previous relationship, Minjahra, 17 – are the inspiration for the latest album and an integral part of Sacred Earth’s creative process. “We play a lot of music at home and the children love it,” says Prem. “Minjahra is often walking around the house singing one of the songs or she might get on the guitar and play it, Jai will go and get his didgeridoo or drum and play along. The music is created around them so they know it well.” Sacred Earth spend half the year touring and take their children on the road with the help of Prem’s mother as a trusted babysitter. In April 2016, the whole family will
Prem and Jethro Williams of Sacred Earth head off on a European tour, visiting London, Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Norway and – Prem hopes – Italy. “I want to spend a week eating pasta,” she laughs. There’s no shortage of people asking Prem and Jethro to play in their part of the world. Anyone who’s ever experienced Sacred Earth performing live knows it’s more than just ambient or relaxation music – it’s powerfully healing and has the ability to touch people on a deep emotional level, sometimes the people you’d least expect. “When we used to play at Eumundi Markets it was like
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
a social experiment in the sense that you couldn’t say who would be moved by the music,” says Jethro. “You might have your generic hippy looking person walk past and you’d think they’d like the music but they might not even notice you’re playing. But someone like a bikie with a rough exterior would come up either in tears or close to tears saying, ‘I have no idea what you’re playing but I really want to take your music home’. “A big difference with our music is that people use it through life and death, to create healing or a sense of peace,” Jethro adds. “It’s used through times of illness, times of joy, putting children to sleep, in doctor’s surgeries, on long drives. It’s more than just music in that regard – people don’t just put it on because they like to listen to it, it’s used for its therapeutic quality. “Our music has been used on Qantas, Singapore Airlines and Malaysian Airlines for the last ten years as music to relax to on a long flight. It’s been great because it has exposed us to people who wouldn’t normally find our music. “I’ve had soldiers coming home from the battlefield saying they listened to our music on the way home and it was really what they needed to hear.” After seven years living in Melbourne and the Yarra Valley, they returned a year and a half ago and are happy to call the Coast home once again. “After we toured in Oregon in the US we fell in love with the alpine region and the cold and thought it would be really lovely to experience that sort of living,” Prem says. “So we just packed up our house and drove south. We landed in the eastern hills of Melbourne and got inspired to send our daughter to the Steiner school down there, which took us out to the Yarra Valley. That was very much an alpine area where it snows in the winter so it was a great experience, a different culture, different food, different people. The climate was really different for us. But we really missed the weather [on the Coast]. Minjahra and Jethro are both surfers and were missing the waves, so we came back to raise our children in the warmth.” The Sunshine Coast launch of kuTumba is at the Noosa Pengari Steiner School on June 13.

Established in beautiful Noosa in the year 2000 by co-founders Jane Meredith and Dietmar Gorlich. Together their combined 30 years of jewellery experience unearthed the awareness that not all women could afford the diamond of their dreams. Secrets was the first Australian company to introduce revolutionary Diamond Simulants set in beautiful fine quality, designs. Secrets Signature Diamond Simulants have since been embraced throughout Australia and the world.
“Women should never have to feel ‘lesser than’, but this woman did, and every ounce of how she felt came into me and I realised that is what I had to do, and I’ve never looked back. “I knew then what Secrets Shhh… had to represent. It had to represent that a woman didn’t have to feel ‘lesser than’, that a woman could come in and buy a beautiful piece of jewellery and not pay huge amounts of money for it. She could have the quality gold, the luxury and also the affordability. It could still make her feel good and she could walk out feeling like she had been to Tiffany & Co or Cartier, and that there was an equal playing field.”

MAROOCHY RIVER GOLF CLUB FEATURE
DAWN OF A NEW ERA
It may have taken more than a decade, but the Sunshine Coast’s newest golf course proves some things are worth the wait.
I
t has taken 10 years, countless debates and a lot of hard work but tomorrow the Sunshine Coast’s newest golf course, the $45 million Maroochy River Golf Club, will open its greens to the public. The opening marks the end of an era for the 65-year-old Horton Park Golf Club but those involved in the project say it is giving way to what will become one of Queensland’s premier courses. “This will be one of the best courses in Queensland and we are extremely happy with the finished product,’’ says General Manager Charlie McGill. “This new facility brings a top class golf course and training facility as well as an entertainment venue for wedding functions with views to die for. “This can only be good for the Coast and tourism.’’ The new 18 hole Graham Marshdesigned course is located on the David Low Highway at Bli Bli and took more than two-and-a-half years to construct. However, the project has been in the
works since 2006 when the club’s board members first tabled concerns about the future of Horton Park particularly relating to its location in the heart of Maroochydore. Club governance and communications director John MeyerGleaves says at the time the board issued seven options. “Options one to six would cost the club money and it was recommended that members agree to option seven from [investment form] Babcock & Brown, that in exchange for our land they would build us a new 36 hole golf course designed by Graham Marsh,’’ Mr Myer-Gleaves recalls. “The relocation date was to be April 2011 after the first 18 holes and clubhouse were completed.’’ However in 2008 Babcock & Brown went into a trading halt and the club was forced to reconsider its options. After a tumultuous and controversial period, which resulted in disagreement between members, the club accepted
a $42 million resumption package from Sunshine Coast Council. Council has earmarked the site as part of its Maroochydore City Centre Principal Development Area and will now take control of the 53 hectare site. Works are expected to begin in June starting with demolition and site preparation followed by bulk earthworks and infrastructure construction for stage one. As a new era begins for Maroochydore so too does it for the golf club. Mr McGill is looking forward to paving the way for the new Maroochy River facility and while it has been a challenging task he is pleased with the result. “Everyone concerned is very proud and extremely happy with the outcome,’’ he says. “As always it is very difficult to keep everyone happy but over the past two years we have consistently kept the members informed of the process and have had numerous bus trips to the new
Charlie McGill and President Geoff Davies site where the members were allowed to walk the course and look through the clubhouse. “I would say 98 per cent of the members are happy with the new facility. “The hardest thing was obviously to try and operate the existing course while building the other one, but I have a great board of directors and a great team of staff that have stuck by us all the way through. “Everyone is looking forward to the move.’’ Visit hortonparkgolfclub.com for more information

he relocation of the Horton Park Golf Club to its brand new course at Bli Bli will enable the start of construction on stage one of the exciting new Maroochydore City Centre which will become the new heart of the Sunshine Coast. The project will be known a SunCentral Maroochydore and CEO John Knaggs says the 53 hectare site will create up to 10,000 jobs over the 20 year life of the project. “What we are creating is a new city centre for the Sunshine Coast from the ground up,’’ he says. “The new city centre will provide important community infrastructure and facilities as well as attract significant new investment to the region. Existing businesses will also see that there will be many new opportunities for expansion. “It will become the premier centre for the region and home to major civic and entertainment facilities, commercial and retail development as well as more than 2,000 residential apartments. “We’ve also ensured there is a significant amount of open space with up to 40 per cent of the project

community. Stage one of SunCentral will start in June and include the demolition of the clubhouse and nearby buildings followed by major earthworks and then infrastructure works. It is expected these early works will be complete around mid-2016 with construction of new buildings by investors able to commence shortly thereafter. October 2010 - Lend Lease advises council and State Government that it cannot fund the relocation of the club without a significant financial contribution from the public sector. Lend Lease offers to assist Horton Park Golf Club to purchase the existing Twin Waters club. November 2010 – Members vote against buying Twin Waters. Sunshine Coast Council issues its intention to resume the land. The club files objection to resumption and negotiations on compensation and lease back begin. March 2011 – Members vote to accept council’s offer but the motion to buy Twin Waters is defeated. September 2011 – Motion to build new course at Bli Bli is carried. October 2011 – Agreement with council on resumption compensation and lease back is signed.

T
omorrow marks an end of an era for the Horton Park Golf Club as it is officially relocated to Bli Bli and renamed Maroochy River Golf Club. As the clubhouse is vacated and the greens give way to future development, those behind the success of the club can be rest assured they are leaving behind a noteworthy and colourful legacy. Since it’s inception the club has gone
from 104 members to a strong 1230, won numerous awards including the 2005 Regional Golf Club of the Year title and hosted former world top 10 professional Geoff Ogilvy. It has been 85 years since generous Sunshine Coast resident Robert Horton donated more than 13 hectares of land to the people of Maroochydore with the direction it was to be used for golf
or sporting purposes. Keen golfer Bill Coffey, who also owned a local drapery store, took the project under his wing and together with pharmacist Fred Jacobs organised a public meeting in 1950 with the intention of forming a golf club. This meeting was held on June 15, 1950 and the first Horton Park Golf Club committee was elected with Mr Coffey at the helm. A building, shed and outhouse were erected in 1952 but it took another four years before the nine hole course was completed. Horton Park Golf Club member and governance and communications director John Meyer-Gleaves says it’s unknown how much the construction cost as most of the work was completed with voluntary labour and donations. “In May 1956 Manuel Hornibrook, president of the QGU, opened the course and the club was granted a liquor license,’’ he says. “A further 2.4 hectares of land was purchased in 1964 and 15.8 hectares of land purchased in 1967. “The Premier of Queensland, Frank Nicklin, officially opened the new 18
hole golf course in October 1971.” In 1988 Rousden Pty Ltd purchased some of the club’s land for $400,000. The club received clear title to 14.24 hectares and the developer was responsible for earthworks, lakes and drainage. As a result, the club underwent yet another major development during the next eight years. “The result was that Horton Park Golf Club was considered the best members course in south-east Queensland and won Queensland Golf Course of the Year in 2005,’’ says Meyer-Gleaves. This history was compiled with the assistance of Frank Blake author of HPGC 50th Anniversary.

BRIGHT FUTURE

n his younger days Derick Seaborn had a firm belief that no decent sport could involve hitting a ball when it wasn’t moving. But an encounter with a golf lover quickly changed his mind. That was 50 years ago. Seaborn was just shy of turning 30 and had recently moved to Maroochydore after buying a pharmacy at Cotton Tree. “My wife and I rented a little house on the corner of Horton Parade and Sugar Road. The little house has long disappeared,’’ he says. “I would walk across to the Horton Park Golf Club when I got home from work to have a drink at the bar. “The guy who ran the bar had a son… he came up to me and said: why don’t you give it a go? “I said that you couldn’t hit a ball that wasn’t moving. He said I’ll meet you at 6.30am. “It took me about 10 or 11 air swings before I hit the ball.’’ Seaborn became a member of Horton Park Golf Club soon after – February 8, 1964 to be exact. He is one of the longest serving club members and says it’s the friendliness of the club that

he enjoys. Seaborn has served as a committee member, played in pennants competitions and has seen many changes at the club. But by far the biggest change is the move to Maroochy River. “I think this new course will be magnificent,’’ he says. “This board has done an extremely good job in communication… the members have been kept well aware of what has been happening. “The communication with members is now extraordinary.’’ At the ripe age of 80, Seaborn says he doesn’t play golf too often these days but is looking forward to swinging a club at Maroochy Rivers Golf Club. “It looks like a beautiful course.’’

WOMEN IN GOLF
I
dentities like Queensland’s own Karrie Webb and current world number one Lydia Ko have played a part in raising the profile of women in golf. The sport has continued to grow in sporting circles across the world including those here on the Sunshine Coast. The number of female members at Horton Park Golf Club has increased six fold in the past 65 years, going from 38 to a healthy 259 players. Originally women were associates but were later granted full membership. The club’s governance and communications director John Meyer-Gleaves says women have played a huge part in the development of the club and will continue to do so with the move to Maroochy River Golf Club. “The associates’ first meeting was in September 1954,’’ he says. “Five associates at the meeting each donated $2.10 and the first bank account was opened. “They have raised a huge amount of funds to assist the club over the years. “Our lady members now have their own competitions on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there are mixed events on Sundays. Seven day members can also play on Saturdays.’’ Mr Meyer-Gleaves says the club’s Girls in Golf initiative has been successful in attracting new players to the game. Now in its third year, Girls in Golf gives women an opportunity to learn the game in a relaxed environment and is designed as a stepping stone into
competitive golf. The initiative has a membership of 75 women who meet each fortnight to focus on the technical and tactical aspects of the game, learn the etiquette and rules. Group members have the opportunity to join the club as a temporary member and play a nine hole competition on Tuesdays. For more information on the program contact Di Pavich on 0438 178 848.
GOLFER’S REVENGE
Women played an integral role in the early days of the club. Here, Val Scells receives her membership badge from secretary Pat Blake and captain Marj Hoey.
A large tree stood on the front left hand side of the old first tee and many players hit this tree when hitting off at the start of their round. One player named John (no real name used) was a regular victim of this cursed tree. Unable to continue suffering the anguish he decided to take his revenge so one night he snuck in and cut down the offending tree with a saw. The committee was aghast when they discovered what had occurred. They tracked down the culprit and summonsed him to appear before the committee. When the committee arrived at the clubhouse to hold the inquiry they found the man sitting on the steps and playing a musical saw with a violin bow. They were not amused and gave him a long suspension from the club. Some say he thought it was worth every minute of the sentence. As published in the Horton Park Golf Club 50th anniversary book.

JUST THE BEGINNING
T
he greens are yet to be played but plans are already in place to ensure Maroochy River Golf Club’s success into the future. General manager Charlie McGill believes that during the next decade the club will not only be one of the most vibrant on the Sunshine Coast, but rate well in Australia’s top 100 venues. While the 18 hole course will cater for members and guests during the next few years, work has begun behind the scenes on the next stage of the club. The new course sits on 71 ha of land with a further 31 ha earmarked for future development. Options include another nine holes, a pitch and putt and a nine hole floodlit par three course. “The brief the consultants got when we were looking for parcels of land was it had to be big enough for 27 holes,’’ McGill says. “With the amount of money we received from council in resumption compensation it was always going to be difficult to build 27 holes up front. “The decision was made to build the best 18 holes and clubhouse we could for the money and worry about the other
nine holes down the track.’’ Course designer Graham Marsh has presented a proposal to the club and hopes the option for a nine hole, par three course will be pursued. He says regardless of the outcome, the club’s commitment to develop the remaining land is a good decision. Constructing a comprehensive learning centre and par three course would be successful, Marsh says. “What we wanted to try to do is as the members get older, they can still have fun around the par three and go to the clubhouse. “Par three courses like that also give the opportunity for mums and dads and kids to slip out and play a little nine hole par three and do it in a couple of hours. “What we’re finding today, golf is challenging because it consumes a huge amount of time. This would give them a unique position in the golf market.’’ McGill says the decision will be made in the next two or three years. “At present we are concentrating all our efforts on getting the 18 holes up and running, once we have done this we will come to some decision on the other parcel of land and what to do with it.’’
GOVERNORGENERAL INVITED
Maroochy River Golf Club president Geoff Davies hopes the new course will help attract dignitaries to the region. Davies has extended an invitation to Governor-General Peter Cosgrove to attend the club’s official celebration later this year. “Sir Peter Cosgrove is an advocate of golf and he was a director of (infrastructure services company) Cardno and they’ve been one of the major contributors to this golf course,’’ Davies says. “I saw it as a great opportunity for Peter to visit the Sunshine Coast… it would be great for the Sunshine Coast community.’’ A date is yet to be set for the official opening but it will be in the later half of this year. Davies says it will be a celebration for the wider community and play a role in recognising the history of Horton Park Golf Club. “Here we are sitting on a $45 million project which we own entirely. “The members, over a long period of time, were able to build up those assets to be able to do that. “It’s something really special.’’

LUCKY BREAK
I
n the early 1970s Western Australiaborn Graham Marsh stormed the international golfing circuit becoming one of country’s most celebrated golfing athletes. With numerous wins under his belt, including victories at the World Match Play Championships and Australian Masters, Marsh went on to funnel his passion for the game into a career both on and off the course. He launched Graham Marsh Golf Design in the mid 1980s and has since designed more than 50 courses across the globe including projects in Germany, China, Vietnam, Morocco and Japan. His latest project is a little closer to home. Recently, the former PGA Tour of Australasia chairman took time out of his busy schedule to speak with My Weekly Preview…

very young. I played junior cricket for Western Australia and my brother, Rod Marsh, went on to play for Australia. I played under 15 cricket for WA… I broke my arm and the doctor said the best thing I could do was swing a golf club. So I started swinging a golf club and started enjoying it more. That was the turning point. I built a career out of breaking my arm.
YOU TURNED PROFESSIONAL IN 1969. WHAT WAS THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER?
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HOW YOU STARTED PLAYING GOLF?
I think there were a lot of tournaments I won that I was really happy with. I played in all the circuits and so I had wins in Europe, the World Match Play and the European Open was a big win. In Japan I won all their major tournaments except the Japan Open. I also won the Dunlop Phoenix and the Chunichi Crown. Those two are my highlights in Japan. My highlights in America would be the Heritage Classic and later the US Senior Open.
I was born in Kalgoorlie but predominantly grew up in Armadale. Dad played golf and mum played so I got to play golf and play cricket when I was

Well it was always a bit of an interest. I had an interest in golf course architecture and was offered an opportunity to become involved in a project in a major way and that was the Gold Coast Daikyo development Palm Meadows. The way they worked golf courses in those days, they’d have a name involved to promote the course. I never had an interest in only putting my name to something. I wanted to get involved in architecture not be another golfer who just put my name on it. That was when I was about 37, at the height of my career. I made a decision and formed a company. We’ve been opened about 30 years… since then we’ve built golf courses all over the world.
WHAT ARE THE KEY COMPONENTS AND CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGNING THE IDEAL COURSE? In a nutshell I say there are five things that are imperative. The first is you need a very good site; second you need a good client. The third thing is good design, fourth you need a good construction company and the final

thing, which is very important, is if the golf course is going to present well you need good maintenance. You need all those stars aligned to develop a good course. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what we say because the main thing that’s important is the 30 to 40,000 rounds of golf played there. It’s far more important what the client thinks and what the user thinks.
DOES YOUR BACKGROUND AS A PROFESSIONAL GOLFER ASSIST IN DESIGNING COURSES? The Graham Marsh designed Boao Forum for Asia course in Hainan Island China.
WHY DID YOU WANT TO TAKE ON THIS PROJECT FOR MAROOCHY RIVER GOLF CLUB? The opportunity was there. We were asked to tender on the job. One thing that aided us was our technical background. It is on a flood plain. It has several technical issues that need to be solved. You’re trying to squeeze out a golf course that’s going to appeal to the public and members. We are a very technical company and our team has
flood modelling skills, engineering, landscape architectural skills. When you get into a site like that it’s difficult to get something out… unless you’ve got those skills.
TELL US ABOUT THE COURSE? We’ve achieved the benchmark we were looking for. We’ve achieved all goals. It’ll more than hold it’s own amongst all other courses out there. I think personally it’ll be up there (as one of the
Coast’s best) in the first year. People will play it and think this is a lot of fun.
DO YOU PLAY ON YOUR OWN COURSES? I will do. I don’t play until it’s finished. We can talk about it and praise our own work but the most important thing is whether the members enjoy it. If they can enjoy it and play there… that’s it. You don’t design for your own ego, you design for what the membership want.
ADFX_15312
I honestly think that from a design point of view you’ve got to understand the game. I’ve been spending so much time playing golf all over the world that I’ve got a good feel how the game is meant to be played and a good feel for good design or poor design. I had the opportunity to play on almost all of the top 100 courses in the world. Most of those were built on beautiful pieces of land. Nowadays getting approvals are different… these days generally we get poorer land handed to us and we have to create out of that.

t’s earmarked to become one of the best courses in Queensland and the new Maroochy River Golf Club is about to be put to the test with members gearing up to try out the new greens. General manager Charlie McGill says with designer Graham Marsh at the helm of the project there is little doubt the course will match its competitors. “Graham has a proven track record as a golf course designer with courses in the United States, the Czech Republic, Germany, Cyprus, Morocco, New Zealand and in the Middle East, as well as Palm Meadows, Paradise Palms, Robina Woods and North Lakes in Queensland,’’ McGill says. “Graham asked us what kind of course we wanted to build and he listened. “As he is such an experienced and well respected course designer it will bring people to the course. “People who have played other courses designed by him will make a point of coming to Bli Bli.’’ The 18 hole Maroochy River Golf
Club sits on former cane land bordered by Finland Road and David Low Way. What was once a stark field has been converted into a vibrant green course complete with water features and an architecturally designed modern clubhouse. “We asked for a members’ golf course that would be challenging for the low handicappers but fair and very playable for the average golfer,’’ McGill says. “That is exactly what we have. This will be one of the best courses in Queensland and we are extremely happy with the finished product.’’ Club president Geoff Davies agrees. He looks forward to playing alongside the members when it opens to them on May 30. “We went through a general deal of trauma to get to this point and to see the outcome, it’s just awesome,’’ Davies says. “We wanted a golf course that could be challenging in terms of a serious competition.’’ The most challenging hole is the
course feature – hole 18. “It’s a par four and a low marker would have no difficulties whatsoever getting on the green in two but we longer markers probably have to lay up for a second shot to hit it into the green,’’ Davies says. “The green is‌ something like 55 metres from front to back. “It’s wonderful looking at the hole
from the clubhouse. I see lots of fun going on with members sitting on the deck, having a beer and betting about who will hit the ball on to the green.’’ Sunshine Coast Council acting mayor Chris Thompson says councillors last week took the opportunity to visit the new facility. “On behalf of councillors, I congratulate the Maroochy River Golf

Designer and former professional golfer Graham Marsh says the course has already undergone its largest test following heavy rainfall earlier this year. “The water was lapping up but the tees and greens were protected,’’ Marsh says. “Within a day you’d be able to get back out and play the golf course. “It’s already been put to the test with it being a floodplain… it came through with flying colours.’’

arryn Fitzpatrick is no stranger to weddings – he attends about 30 a year. You won’t find him socialising by the cake table in a suit and tie, he’s usually in the kitchen decked out in his chef’s whites. Fitzpatrick and wife Kerry have headed up Rumba Room Events in Caloundra for the past three years but are now broadening their horizons by taking on the catering element of Maroochy River Golf Club. The chef, who has 15 years experience, says he is looking forward to the challenge of shaping the club into a premier wedding venue. He will work alongside Coast-based company Beautiful Weddings to theme elegant events. His company, Maroochy River Weddings, will offer a range of packages including sit-down functions, cocktail themed events or buffet style weddings. The club’s purpose built function room seats 150 or caters for 200 people standing. “We do a variety of weddings. Everyone wants to have an individual wedding,’’ Fitzpatrick says.
“We are doing an introductory offer at the moment of $90 a head. “We’ve had a lot of inquiries and have got some bookings booked in.’’ There are plans in place to construct a wedding chapel or pergola on site with views across to Mount Coolum. The club can also cater for functions including birthdays and anniversaries.
FOOD LOVERS In his 15 years as a chef Darryn Fitzpatrick has learnt a thing or two about Sunshine Coast diners. They want affordable, tasty food that is created from fresh, local produce. So, this is exactly what the Maroochy River Golf Club caterer is aiming to do when he opens the doors of the bistro on Saturday. “I’m hoping to get away from that traditional, deep-fried club food,’’ Fitzpatrick says. “We want something more family friendly. “The prices have to be right. A SMART ALL-ROUNDER Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the VW TIGUAN 130TDI
I
n cricket they’re called allrounders. In football, they call them utilities. At work, they might be called a jack of all trades. Having the ability to fill more than one role can be very handy at times. Volkswagen’s compact SUV, the
Tiguan, is such an all-rounder. Call it a multi-purpose vehicle. Call it a soft-roader or a faux-wheel-drive. It will answer to just about anything. VW says the Tiguan combines the versatility of an SUV and the agility of a sports car. And while manufacturers are
sometimes prone to exaggerate, the claim in this instance is surprisingly accurate. This fairly modest, slightly boxy-looking little Tiguan is quite the surprise packet. The Tiguan was first spotted as a concept vehicle at the 2006 Los Angeles
Motor Show, hit the market a year or so later and has enjoyed a couple of freshen-ups since then. Almost a million Tiguans have been sold worldwide, an indication of its popularity. The latest update gives it more equipment across the five-model range as well as some mechanical improvements. While the most affordable Tiguan (starting at under $30,000) has a small four-cylinder engine, front-wheel-drive and a manual transmission, all other variants enjoy VW’s impressive 4Motion all-wheel-drive set-up. Even so, you’ll rarely see many of these ploughing through the sand on Fraser Island. Our test machine, the only dieselpowered option in the Tiguan range, sits close to the top of the family tree with a $39,990 price tag. That gets you a decent level of equipment, the security of all-wheeldrive grip and little luxuries like touchscreen access to audio, telephone and other cockpit settings, as well as practical measures such as an electric parking brake. A rear-view camera, such an important safety measure on these high-set machines, is also standard on

all Tiguan models. The Tiguan is comfortable without exactly pampering its occupants. VW has a reputation for fuss-free, practical but rather bland-looking interiors and this car is no exception. But everything just seems to work as it should, which will no doubt be welcome in a car whose main occupants are likely to be families with young children. Cabin quietness is impressive, as is the diesel engine’s smoothness of operation. The highlight for us, though, was the way the Tiguan drives and performs. The two-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel powerplant is an absolute cracker with quietness and smoothness that belies its frugal thirst and its almost dazzling performance. VW engineers have managed to extract an extra 27 kilowatts in the latest version of this engine with total outputs now of 130 kilowatts and 380 Newton metres of torque. The official figures say it will zip to the speed limit in a leisurely 8.5 seconds but, in truth, it feels much smarter than that. With the seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission ripping through the

DEALS
gears, the Tiguan rockets away from the traffic lights and always has kick in reserve for darting into gaps in the traffic. Its ride and handling is equally well resolved to the point the Tiguan rivals its stablemate, the legendary Golf, in the driving pleasure stakes.
That’s quite a comparison but it’s clear these two VW machines share much of the same DNA. Compliant ride, sturdy handling and an effortless driving experience are common to both. Like the Golf, the Tiguan feels larger than it really is but remains a fairly petite thing as evidenced by its slightly underwhelming cargo capacity.
A set of golf clubs, for instance, will require the 60/40 splitfold rear seats to be folded forward, creating an almost flat, useful storage area. There are thoughtful touches, too. If you fold down only one side of the rear seatbacks, the remaining passenger will find a built-in cup holder and little storage tray built into the neighbouring seatback. Very thoughtful. Just as thoughtful is the Tiguan’s fatigue detection device. While some cars have a fatigue monitor that merely beeps after you’ve been at the wheel for a certain time, the VW version is much more than that. From the moment you start a journey, the system assesses and memorises key driver characteristics such as steering and throttle behaviour. Then, if those inputs change significantly after a period of driving, the system emits a visual and audio alert that you might need to take a break. The Tiguan also uses brake energy regeneration to produce electric power, reducing load on the alternator which, in turn, reduces load on the engine. There’s also a fuel-saving stop-start system that turns off the engine when stopped in heavy traffic. Clever thinking all round.
VW TIGUAN 130TDI HOW BIG? At first glance you’d swear this was quite a large machine but actually it’s no larger than its cousin the VW Golf. Fine as a second car or for young families. HOW SAFE? Eight airbags, a full suite of electronic safety aids plus a clever fatigue detection system help it achieve a five-star safety rating. And a reversing camera in all models is a nice touch. HOW FAST? The turbo-diesel model we tested was very spirited. There’s an even more powerful R-Line version, or for the more conservative drivers there’s a more modest 1.4-litre, four-cylinder entry-level model. HOW THIRSTY? The diesel enjoys a frugal 6.2L/100km thirst. HOW MUCH? The basic two-wheel-drive option is $28,990 plus onroads, our diesel test machine will set you back $38,990.

ON THE MOVE
The latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland point to an improving property market. By Jemma Pearson
T
he latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland data has revealed a shift in median house price trends across the state, and the Sunshine Coast is just one region benefiting from improved values. Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Cairns all experienced steady improvements in median house values, the report states, with the Sunshine Coast experiencing an average increase of more than 1.5 per cent each quarter over the past year. REIQ Sunshine Coast Zone Chair Amber Werchon says the increase in median price is a positive sign for the Sunshine Coast property market. “Any increase in the median is a good thing for the values, and property owners, in the region,” she told MPP. And she adds there are positive signs that the growth will continue. “We have been seeing sustainable growth since the September 2013 quarter. With the current development happening on the Coast, coupled with the low interest rates, it is likely that this will continue.” According to the REIQ, Brisbane is the fastest-selling area in Queensland and had the strongest lift to median house values for the year ending March 2015. The REIQ median values data report shows that Brisbane’s days-on market statistic is just 57 – the fastest in the state. This is an improvement by eight days, compared with a year ago. Last week’s 48 My Weekly Preview | May 29, 2015
48.indd 1
release also shows that Cairns has been a standout performer over the past 12 months, with profit-making sales leaping from 78 per cent of transactions making a profit to 90 per cent. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says the data confirmed the REIQ’s position that Queensland is experiencing steady, sustainable growth. “This report supports the REIQ’s long-held view that those areas of Queensland that have been doing well are continuing to do well. Those areas that are struggling to recover from the resources downturn are still trying to stabilise,” she says. “But what we don’t have is the start of another boom and bust cycle, which, as we all know by now, doesn’t really benefit anyone in the long term.” Standout trends from the report include the general sustainable lift of median house values across the southeast, Toowoomba and the tourism centres. “It’s great to see Brisbane and Toowoomba keeping that steady rate of growth that we’ve seen for the past 12 months,” Mercorella says. “We all know the economy is still recovering and property is clearly leading the way.
“People trust property and whether you’re an owner-occupier or an investor, property has shown to be a reliable performer over the long term.” Brisbane local government area (LGA) median house values have risen by 1.6 per cent over the quarter, and, along with Toowoomba, this was the highest quarterly increase. Brisbane (LGA) proportion of profit-making sales increased three percentage points to 96 per cent, compared with a year ago. Meanwhile, Toowoomba holds the state’s record with 98 per cent of all houses sold recording a profit for the seller. Also in Toowoomba, the quarterly growth in median house values is the strongest in the state, averaging an increase of 1.9 per cent over the past four quarters. Outside of Brisbane, Toowoomba is the fastest-selling region, with days on market at 63. The Garden City also continues to hold the lowest average vendor discounting rate of 4.7 per cent. Cairns is also selling well, with average days on market at 65 and a vendor discounting rate of 5.8 per cent. The Gold Coast figures show average days on market at 72 with a vendor discounting
“Any increase in the median is a good thing for the values, and property owners, in the region”
rate of six per cent. While the REIQ figures for the Sunshine Coast show 84 days as the average time on market with a vendor discounting rate of 5.7 per cent. Gladstone’s average days on market was 113 days with a vendor discount of 9.9 per cent. While this shows the city isn’t performing as well as others in the state, the median house values increased by 0.8 per cent. Although this is a small jump, it is significant because it is the city’s first move into positive territory in five quarters. The rate of decline in Mackay’s median values appears to be slowing, with a drop of just one per cent to its annual median value in the March quarter. Townsville’s median house values rose 0.7 per cent, which reflects the small improvements that have been seen in other economic indicators. Townsville’s proportion of profit-making sales continues to remain stable at 74 per cent, since August last year. Meanwhile, the profit-making sales figures for the Sunshine Coast show that 87 per cent of sellers in this region made a profit. These latest figures, combined with increased activity, plus buyer and seller confidence in the local market bode well for the future, and the signs are good that the local property market will continue to improve into the rest of 2015. Werchon tells MPP, “The market has been active and buyer confidence is strong, so much so that it’s the best we’ve seen in over five years in terms of numbers of sales.” myweeklypreview.com.au

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Righto then! The Fiji pro starts on Monday. Plenty of waves are predicted although nothing as huge as last year. Hopefully, the best surfer can win based on skills not lack of waves in a heat. Go and watch the 2013 f nal with Fanning vs Slater – OMG! That will certainly get you in the mood. With any luck the sun will stop the Brazilian storm. As for the weekend, conditions are looking fantastic. Unfortunately the swell not so much. Dust of the Mal or stand up is my hint. Book a game of golf or go for a climb on the Glass House Mountains as the weather is looking the goods. Enjoy.
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Tailor are the surprise packet with a great run from the motorway bridge channel down to the Maroochy Bar with baby blue pilchards or whitebait on ganged hooks the best baits. You can get whiting and bream on yabbies and prawns drifting over the old oyster banks at Bli Bli. There are still a few odd mud crabs around. Flathead are taking trolled lures from the mouths of Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. SURF: The early run of tailor is evident right along the Coast beaches with shiny lures working early mornings and pillies are the best bait after dark. Hot spots are Mudjimba to Twin Waters. There are a few bream at Pincushion OFFSHORE: Inshore reefs from Coolum to Caloundra are returning Moses perch, parrot, grassy sweetlip and snapper. Spanner crabs are about in numbers. The better quality f sh are being caught on the southern end of the Barwon Banks instead of the northern end. The water temp is dropping and bait is fairly scattered. FRESHWATER: Bass are ever present at Somerset with jigging lures and baits the preferred option once schools are located. Deep divers are working well from Red Rock to The Hump for golden perch.
You will never look back...

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Jump out of cruise control – confidence and passion will take you far this week! The fiery full moon encourages you to visualise your aspirations for the future … and then act on them. It’s time to step up to the plate, take an amazing dream and spin it into rock-solid reality.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] If you are attached, things could get hot and heavy at Casa Taurus, as the full moon stimulates your intimacy zone. Singles –you could find love via an introduction from a relative. But only focus on suitors who are serious about settling down.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You can get so caught up in the busyness of daily life that you neglect those closest to you. The full moon falls in your relationship zone, so spend quality time with loved ones this week. But make sure you listen closely to what they have to say.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Have you been a lazy crab? With the full moon activating your wellbeing zone, make sure you nurture your body with healthy food and regular exercise. You’ll find the combination of enthusiasm and discipline will pay off handsomely in the future.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions – it’s your time to shine! With lucky Venus visiting Leo (from June 6 until July 19) plus prosperity planet Jupiter jumping through your sign (until August 11) hurry up and make the most of the awesome opportunities that are around you at the moment.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Avoid getting into ‘VeryStressed Virgo Mode’! Try to worry less and focus more, as you complete one task at a time, before moving on to the next project. Have you been burning the midnight oil at work and neglecting your nearest and dearest in the process?
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] When you’re communicating with others, stay on topic and focus on the facts. Group activities are favoured, as long as you give others the freedom to express their ideas. The more you nurture friends your peer group, the more love and assistance you’ll receive in return.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The full moon focuses attention on financial matters and self-esteem issues. Have confidence in your inner worth, and avoid being too attached to material possessions and outer appearances. Let your true beauty shine!
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] The Sagittarian full moon magnifies your positive traits – and your negative ones. Strive to be generous and gregarious, rather than bossy and belligerent! Also, aim to get the ratio right between personal projects and group endeavours.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] With the planets shaking up your daily routine zone, it’s time to do things differently. Do you have an important decision you need to make? Don’t just rely on your rational, logical self. With the full moon lighting up your intuition zone, try going with your gut feeling.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Strive to get the balance right between change and the status quo. You’re keen to break free from rules and restrictions – especially within a group situation. But you’ll find if you want the long-term rewards, you’ll have to play by the short-term rules.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] With Saturn sauntering through your career zone, discipline and hard work now will bring benefits in the long-term. Don’t worry about what other people think of you … how do you feel about yourself? Strong self-esteem is the secret to future success, both personally and professionally.

THE L AST W ORD
LIVE AND LET LIVE Same-sex marriage will one day be seen as a basic civil right, writes Richard O’Leary.
W
hat do women getting the vote, the 40-hour working week, and Indigenous Australians being given citizenship all have in common? They were hugely controversial at the time, but looking back now, we wonder why it took so long. I think same-sex marriage will join that list. When Ireland (conservative and Catholic) became the first country in the world to grant marriage equality by popular vote last week, it signalled change is not far away here as well. The tide isn’t turning on this issue in Australia… it has turned. In 2004 a News poll showed 38 per cent of people supported same-sex marriage, while 44 per cent were opposed and 18 per cent were undecided. Three years later, a Galaxy poll found 57 per cent supported it, 37 percent were opposed and six per cent were undecided.
Just about every poll since has found most Australians support same-sex marriage… 68 per cent in a Roy Morgan Research poll in 2011, 65 per cent in a 2013 Nielson poll, and 72 per cent in the 2014 poll conducted by the Crosby Textor Group – the same mob who polls for the Liberal Party. Former deputy prime minister Wayne Swan is the highest profile politician to switch his position in favour of same-sex marriage after coming to the conclusion he “was wrong”. He simply couldn’t reconcile his views about same-sex marriage with his support for economic and social equality. There have been some reforms to allow same-sex couples access to the same social security and family assistance as the rest of us, but they don’t enjoy the same rights and entitlements to workers compensation death benefits, pensions for partners of Defence Force veterans and access to carers’ leave.
Swan’s change of heart, and events overseas, have Australian Marriage Equality, the group pushing for the change, confident there may soon be the numbers in parliament to legislate same-sex marriage. The issue could all come down to whether the Prime Minister is willing to change his opinion on giving Coalition members a conscience vote. It may just be the opportunity Tony Abbot needs to shed some of that baggage that has weighed down his leadership. No one expects him to change his mind, he’s completely entitled to his beliefs and values, but to allow his colleagues to express theirs would be the sign of a statesman. Just for the record, my position is pretty simple: if two adults love each other, are committed to each other and want to spend their lives together, why wouldn’t you let them get married? roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
