o you remember collecting aluminium cans so you could earn a little extra cash for pocket money? Well, recycling has undergone a revolution. You can now drop off mattresses, computers and those little coffee pods that deliver our caffeine hits each day. We may not get any money for them, but what price for a healthier planet? That’s our feature story this week. Getting married? Thinking about it? Take a look at our seven-page guide to give you plenty of ideas about how to make your wedding extra special. Also this week, we meet a local who has taken a year out of her life to take care of sun bears in Borneo, have a quick chat with one of the region’s most successful writers, and travel to Italy to learn how to cook. As always there’s beauty, health and life tips, all the latest celebrity style, pics from social events across the Sunshine Coast, as well as plenty of property. Enjoy. I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

OUTSPOKEN AUTHOR

Steven Lang is the author of two novels, An Accidental Terrorist, which won both Queensland and New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards, and, 88 Lines About 44 Women. He and his wife Chris run Outspoken, an extended writers festival in Maleny, presenting conversations with well-known authors. FIRST JOB?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Pulling frozen tuna off a conveyor belt in the Honolulu fish market. I lasted a day.

That would have to be today and today and today, even when it’s not.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT WAS A TURNING POINT?

My wonderful wife, our four grown children, five grandchildren and Sebastian, the dog.

Winning the Premier’s Literary Award for my manuscript of An Accidental Terrorist. I was being recognised by people who had no stake in me for doing what I most loved. I would probably have kept writing anyway, but it gave me the courage to try for even greater things.

FIRST CAR? A Kombi. It was 1972. I was a hippie. I couldn’t help myself.

FAVOURITE BOOK? There’s about a hundred of them but if you force me to pick then Humboldt’s Gift by Saul Bellow. I’ve read it more times than I can count. Saul Bellow is the master.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Throwim Way Leg by Tim Flannery. I’ll be interviewing Flannery in September for Outspoken, so I’m doing a bit of background reading – but what a joy! Flannery was a true explorer in his youth, camping out with cannibals (I mean really) in Papua New Guinea.

FAVOURITE PIECE OF MUSIC? Probably Arvo Part’s Spiegel im Spiegel, but on another day it might be Ry Cooder’s Meeting by the River.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Hiking at Beinn Alligin on a recent trip back to Scotland here I thought this was the place. There was a sense of freedom in Australia, on an interpersonal level, that I’d never encountered anywhere else.

WHY DO YOU LIVE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I came here because my ex-wife moved to Maleny with our children and I wanted to be an active parent. I wasn’t so happy about it, but I came to love it. I stayed because it’s special; people in Maleny, whether you like it or not, are engaged… they care about how the place develops. You don’t get that so much in other parts of Australia, or indeed the world.

I’ve never been so good at listening to advice. I don’t know many people who are.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST?

WHEN DID YOU COME TO AUSTRALIA?

Bouloomba Gorge. You have to be prepared to walk and scramble to get there but it is truly magical, particularly on a hot summer’s day.

In 1970. I’m from Scotland. I was 19 and hitchhiking around the world. When I got

8 My Weekly Preview | July 31, 2015

8.indd 1

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Only one? A railway connection to Brisbane is the priority. Any further development without one is criminal negligence on behalf of planners. Can I have another one? A town centre, perhaps something like a piazza in Italy, not a shopping centre, not a Principal Activity Centre (whatever that is), a town centre where people come to meet. On one side you’d have an art gallery/theatre, on another the seat of government (so you can gather to protest when they get it wrong), all around it cafes. A centre that defines who we are.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Noosa National Park.

Not writing more when I was younger.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m walking in the hills.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU? This government (Federal) and their cynical exploitation of the worst aspects of our society in order to gain votes. I think Australia is ill-served by this mob of goons.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? I write to politicians. And I try my best to be true to my own ideals.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Trust yourself. You know more than you think, and, please, start writing it all down, now. You might think you’ll remember it later, but you won’t.

TEA OR COFFEE? Espresso coffee, as a piccolo.

FROM TRASH TO TREASURE Recycling goes to a whole new level at the Coast’s four resource recovery centres. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

GETTING BACK TO BASICS… What CAN go in your yellow-lidded bin? Plastics with numbers one to six, clean and dry cardboards and paper, glass bottles and jars, aluminium, aerosols and steel cans. What CAN’T go into your yellow-lidded bin? Disposable nappies, garden waste, Styrofoam, plastic bags, plastic wrappings, drink glasses, syringes and scrap metals. How do you PREPARE your recyclables? Rinse and clean containers, remove lids and labels, squash and flatten containers and cardboard. Do not place recyclables in plastic bags.

I

t’s 7.55am on a Saturday morning and Caloundra’s Pierce Avenue is bustling. Motorists are queuing for a car park and, from all indications, it’s the hottest place to be. The doors to the Caloundra Recycling Markets are yet to open but already the line is at least 40 people deep. Five days a week, people of all ages and from all backgrounds swoop on the markets in search of a great bargain. There are four recycling markets across the Coast – Caloundra, Buderim, Witta and Beerwah. As of this month, the Caloundra and Buderim facilities are being operated by Endeavour Foundation. As a result, a number of disadvantaged residents are employed, or volunteer, to assist in the provision of services. Treasure hunters, renovators and do-it-yourselfers scouring the markets will unearth everything from golf clubs to books, appliances, furniture and even

the kitchen sink. It’s testament to the phrase: someone else’s trash is someone else’s treasure. That’s the name of the game – to reduce waste that would ultimately go to landfill. The items that fill the shelves and floor space of the markets are sourced from Sunshine Coast Council’s Resource Recovery Centres (RRC). The Caloundra and Witta centres have been operating since 2002 with Beerwah and Buderim opening in the following two years, a council spokesperson says. “Initially, each RRC opened to the public one day per week. However, due to growth and demand for items from the three main recycling markets, Caloundra RRC is now open five days per week, Buderim RRC four days per week and Beerwah RRC three days per week.’’ In the past 10 years, an increased interest in preserving the natural environment has spurred on the recycling movement.

Recycling is not new. According to peak environmental body Planet Ark, the first Australian paper mill to use recycled material was built in 1815, while waste paper collections from households and businesses started in Melbourne more than 90 years ago. However, it has changed substantially in recent years with the introduction of e-waste and coffee pods, two of the biggest game changers – neither of which can be placed in council-supplied recycling bins. On the Sunshine Coast there are almost 100,000 of the yellow-lidded bins with council collecting and processing more than 40,000 tonnes of material each year. In addition, council diverts 10,000 mattresses, 23,000 litres of oil, 7800 tonne of metal and 1500 tonne of cardboard from landfill each year. But the question still remains: are we doing enough? Reports indicate that people are still not recycling correctly despite

COVER STORY

campaigns and educational tools circulating within the community. Australians are among the highest waste producers in the world, producing 48 million tonnes of rubbish each year. According to Clean Up Australia, 40 per cent of this is being sent to landfill or dumped in the environment. Environmental warrior Ian Kiernan, who founded Clean Up Australia in 1989, says it’s about getting back to basics. “It’s about intelligent resource recovery instead of consigning it to the tip,’’ he says. “It’s about reusing and conserving energy and resources.” “Kerbside recycling is very easy,’’ Kiernan adds. “Put the bin out, that’s a good start. What we’re looking to do is expand the commitment every day. “Your own purchasing policy has a big role to play here. It’s about rewarding the responsible manufacturer and retailer.” Environment crusader Ann Wensley knows a thing or two about the vital role purchasing policy can play in terms of recycling. She believes people have a choice when it comes to the amount of rubbish they accumulate and much is derived from their weekly grocery shop. The Sunshine Coast historian and author has been fighting for the environment since 1987 when she went head to head with the former Caloundra City Council in a battle of the bins. The council was introducing wheelie bins and Wensley refused to take ownership of one. She took her plight to the media and eventually won, remaining without a bin until recently. Even now it goes weeks without being emptied and even then, it’s near empty. “I didn’t want a bin because I had chooks and compost,’’ Wensley says. “In those days most people didn’t have much stuff. We didn’t have all the packaging.

Clean Up Australia founder Ian Kiernan

“It’s about intelligent resource recovery instead of consigning it to the tip. It’s about reusing and conserving energy…” “You went to the butcher shop for meat and the fruit shop to get fruit. The same as I do today. “At that time the only thing you could recycle were glass bottles and aluminium cans at the Caloundra Scouts, which is what I used to do.’’ Following her stance against waste, Wensley formed the Caloundra/ Kawana Wastebusters group, which was gifted a parcel of land from the council to create a recycling depot. She was also asked to sit on the waste committee’s board in an honorary capacity. “We drew up the plans for the resource recovery centre… we really were leading the nation with those ideas at the time.

“The fact is, it was a group of people who were really passionate about no waste. “There’s no such thing as waste, it’s just a misplaced resource.’’ It’s difficult to fathom how a household can produce little to no waste. “I buy fresh meat and vegetables, what rubbish do you have from that except a dirty plastic bag, which I wash and use again. I used to take my own Tupperware containers to the butcher but you can’t do that now because of health regulations. “All my papers, I seal them up and tie up like a parcel and then cover them with compost. “If we all ate fresh food we wouldn’t have much rubbish and we’d be healthier too. Wensley says the message is simple: “Recycling is necessary for the future of the planet.’’ Kiernan has faith in the human race. The annual Clean Up Australia Day events are proof of that. More than 562,000 people participated in the event earlier this year. He says the key to behavioural change is awareness and education. “We need to start in the home. “It’s not only an Australian problem. The main contributor is all of humanity.’’

THE MODERN CHALLENGE Technology is now one of the biggest contributing factors to Australia’s growing waste issues. Figures from Clean Up Australia indicate that 88 per cent of the four million computers and three million televisions purchased in our country each year will end in landfill. E-waste, including old computers, laptops, printers, mobile phones, batteries and faxes, will be taken at all of Sunshine Coast Council’s waste facilities at no cost. The emergence of the coffee pod is also creating a new challenge, with the little capsule quickly taking over bottled water in the waste stakes. In 2013 consumer advocacy group Choice reported that Nespresso had sold about 28 billion capsules globally. While these pods are recyclable, the reality is most end up in landfill. Nespresso has partnered with recycling company Terracycle to build a network to tackle the issue. For those wanting to do the right thing, used pods can be delivered to the Nespresso Boutique in Brisbane City.

TRAVEL

A TASTE OF ITALY This is the kind of holiday true Italian food fans salivate over. By Sarah Marshall

“O

h no, it’s all gone crooked.” I am trying to roll my last batch of fresh egg pasta through a heavy, clunking machine, preparing ravioli for a late lunch. But it all seems to be going horribly wrong. With the help of head chef Maxine Clark though I’m soon back on track and my ravioli parcels, filled with beef cheeks marinated in Amarone di Valpolicella wine, start to resemble the squares of soft loveliness I am used to seeing on restaurant plates. Once the hard work is done, we sit down to our meal in the villa’s former silks storage room, with views to the vast rose garden. I am staying at the beautiful 15th century Villa Casagrande, in the glorious Veneto, surrounded by the Dolomites mountain range, and for the next four days I will be sharpening my skills in the kitchen at the Stirred cookery school. I could spend hours eating and

drinking in the gracious company of co-founders Sarah Roberts and Patrick Obert, but there is lots of work to be done. We drive for an hour through lush green fields to reach the floating city of Venice. Sarah hurries us through the crowds and across the Rialto Bridge to the lively, bustling market. We wander past mountains of black-ink cuttlefish and piles of red shiny tomatoes, selecting the ingredients for our next culinary masterpiece. A string quartet plays in the background, transporting me to another era. Later that day, we take a water taxi to the island of Mazzorbo for lunch at the Venissa hotel and restaurant. I explore a 12th century monastery and discover a vineyard, planted with the rediscovered Dorona grape. Back at Villa Casagrande, chef Maxine suggests that olive oil can be tasted in the same way as wine – swirl a small amount in the mouth, inhale then oxygenate.

Villa Casagrande “The further south you go, the less peppery the flavour,” she tells me. I savour these nuggets of information just as much as the food I’ve been served and have created during my four-day course. After all, if my ravioli fails to impress future dinner guests, my conversation certainly will. AAP

TECHNOLOGY

APP OF THE WEEK

VINYL REVIVAL For too long, vinyl records have been stashed away. They’ve been packed up in boxes, forgotten about despite bringing hours of joy to a generation who wore bell bottoms, watched Happy Days and revelled in Mexican jumping beans. Thanks to this new technology, the old records are about to be dusted off and revived. The Flexson VinylPlay Turntable not only plays the tracks but, through the use of a USB port, converts the records to digital files so they can be preserved and played through other devices including smartphones. The VinylPlay isn’t cheap. It retails for around $999. Visit flexson.com.

WATER YOUR BODY It seems a little surprising to learn that people need reminding when it comes to drinking water. But this app is used by more than five million people, and is listed in Google Play’s most popular app list. The Water Your Body app not only acts as a reminder but tracks your drinking habits. It’s simple to use – enter your weight and the app will calculate how much you should be drinking on a daily basis. Once you’ve had a drink, add a cup in the app, which will graph and log your records. Water Your Body is free on Android.

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Anyone who grew up in the 1980s will recall the Commodore PET and 64 fondly. Now the old school computer is back. It’s just a little smaller – and sharper – than you remember it. The Commodore PET smartphone will be released to the European market first and rolled out to the wider world at a later date. The slim phone has all the features you would expect – 32GB of storage with a 64GB MicroSD, 13-megapixel camera and Google’s version of the Android mobile operating system, 5.0 Lollipop. Retro fans will be pleased to know the phone also allows users to play the old Commodore 64 and Amiga games. The PET smartphone retail for around $400 but there’s no word yet on when it will be available in Australia.

Sinus? Headaches & Sneezing? Constipation, Nausea, Bad Breath or Overweight? Does Your Gut Gurgle? It May Not Be Allergies or Food Afterall! Sinus, hayfever, ongoing sneezing, and daily headaches, worse in the morning, though seem to last more months through the year than the Spring should bring, and could have been going on for decades, all could be part of a bigger health problem that is NOT associated with your allergies! Do you also suffer with symptoms of constipation, gurgling sounds in the gut, stubborn weight, nausea, or bad breath? These are all connected to the same underlying cause, and can last a lifetime if never detected. One single underlying issue can cause all of these symptoms. Often these symptoms have been going on for months, or years, and have been mistaken for allergies, resulting in the overuse of nasal sprays or antihistamines, doing little to help, and harming your sinuses. You may suffer just a few of these symptoms or perhaps all of them. The cause has been found in the mucous membranes of the entire digestive canal, including the gut, right through the mucosa of the mouth and the sinuses, and is quite common. It is an insidious infection mainly picked up from eating food that has been left out for long periods, though is only detected in specialised testing. This specific infection will burrow deep within the villi of your gut wall, releasing a nerve toxin, paralysing the muscles of your bowel, causing symptoms of constipation and nausea, not to mention the secondary effects such as chronic weight gain, fatigue, and tender lymph glands in the groin and armpits. It is rarely investigated, often mistaken for allergic rhinitis, or lazy bowel, so can go on for years undetected and untreated, causing irreparable damage. Fortunately quite easy to address, most symptoms relieved when the infection is eradicated. Patients who have suffered with fatigue, sinus headaches and overweight for many years, watching them adhere to low fat and low carb diets, all with no results, and after treatment for just a few months have improved out of sight, losing weight and feeling well. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly when properly investigated with the right medical testing. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a FREE ½ hour consultation, with one of our experienced and specially trained naturopaths.

MY LIFE

CATCH SOME RAYS Nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara explains why it’s important to get a daily dose of sunshine.

S

unshine and vitamin D are essential to our health, but synthetic supplements will never compare to the real thing. Vitamin D needs to come from the sun and through high-quality vitamin D-rich foods, such as grass-fed liver, butter, ghee, eggs and dairy, oily fish and mushrooms that have been exposed to the sun. So why is sunshine so essential? Several studies have shown that exposure to sunlight significantly reduces, or even eliminates, symptoms of depression. Daily sunshine may be an easy, cost-effective way of improving mental illness. Vitamin D is essential in order to heal and seal a leaky gut and for calcium absorption, ensuring your bones are kept strong and healthy. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce symptoms and risk of autoimmune

disorders including rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes. It can regulate blood pressure and reduce your risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other metabolic syndromes due to the link between insulin sensitivity and vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is a huge contributor in regulating your immune system. Cholesterol is required for the production of vitamin D in the body, and as vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, it requires dietary fat for it to be absorbed and used. To get the vitamin D your body needs, expose yourself to the sun for at least 10 minutes a day.

WHAT? The Float Space, Maroochydore features two floatation pods, massage treatments and an infrared sauna. WHO? Owners Felipe De Carvalho Galler and Janina Hildebrand became hooked on floatation therapy to help with stress, injury and illness, so they decided to share the love and open their own centre. WHY? It’s said floating can help reduce depression, anxiety and stress. It reduces toxin build-up and increases blood flow. It helps alleviate chronic pain such as arthritis, relaxes tense muscles, and boosts creativity and concentration. HOW? After a brief tour, I was left in a private room that contains a shower and floatation tank. I stripped down, quickly myweeklypreview.com.au

showered and slipped into the pod that contains Epsom salt-dense warm water. It is so salty you just can’t possibly sink. The hour went by surprisingly quickly, so I showered and headed upstairs to relax in the Float Space’s lounge while sipping on cumin tea. COST? A single float costs $69 but you can buy packages that reduce the cost. WAS IT WORTH IT? Absolutely. De Carvalho Galler and Hildebrand have created a beautiful space, and while it took me a while to relax in the tank, I was reluctant to leave. The real benefit was felt afterwards – floating left my muscles relaxed and I spent the rest of the day feeling energised and content. But don’t take my word for it. Sunshine Coast conservationist Case Murtagh reflects on her year rehabilitating Malayan sun bears in Borneo. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

I

n July 2014, Yaroomba conservationist Casey Murtagh left her comfortable life on the Sunshine Coast to spend a year living in the forests of Borneo with lions and tigers and bears. Well, not the lions and tigers, but definitely the bears. And tarantulas. The adventurous 33-year-old accepted a 12-month volunteer position with Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) in the province of Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, rehabilitating two Malayan sun bear cubs back into the wild. She lived in a compound three hours by motorbike from the nearest town, walking three kilometres to the bears’ sleeping quarters each morning. “My day would start at sunrise and I would return with them at sunset and walk back that three kilometres with a head torch,” Murtagh says. “Borneo comes alive at night. It was scary but I kind of got used to it after a while. There were animal sounds and there were tarantulas walking across the path. “But I think the scariest thing for me would be when it would start to rain in the forest because daytime would turn into nighttime. The canopy gets really dark and the rain sounds like a steam train coming through the forest and when it hits, the whole place is really noisy. When it’s raining in the forest, the bears go completely mad. They become rolling balls of fur and teeth and claws, you have to keep your eyes on them and stay out of the way at the same time. They love the rain but it can be dangerous for the human involved; they grab hold of you and want to shake around. You just have to try to stay out of the way and keep an eye on them.” Murtagh’s passion for conservation was sparked when at the age of 25, she took up a five-month tree planting position in Canada, returning to Australia to complete a Diploma in Conservation and Land Management. Her interest then turned towards wildlife conservation, and she raised almost $60,000 for orangutan conservation through Australian-based charity The Orangutan Project, before heading to the wilds of Borneo to work with OFI. While OFI is widely recognised for its important role in protecting, rescuing, and rehabilitating orangutans,

the Foundation has a ‘no turn away’ policy for all wildlife, which has led to the rescue and care of many other species, including Malayan sun bears. These bears face an uncertain future due to an illegal pet and cruel bile milking trade throughout Asia and Southeast Asia. Murtagh’s role as an OFI volunteer was to establish a bond with two confiscated female cubs, who had been previously kept as illegal pets. “Sun bear rehabilitation is known to be extremely difficult work,” says Murtagh. “One of the main reasons for having a human in the rehabilitation process is to protect the cubs from wild bears; they’re very territorial.”

“I’d sit in the cage for five hours every day and interact and play fight with them. I had to wear long sleeves and thick clothing and if things started to get too much for me, I’d remove myself from the situation. I spent every day with them for nine or 10 hours giving them food, treats, cleaning their enclosure. I was their go-to person and that helped me to establish trust and allowed me to work closely with them.” When the time came for forest rehabilitation, Casey spent months living alongside OFI field staff in a remote jungle location taking the cubs on daily walks to explore their new territory. Casey has spent time in the jungle before, but the isolation at the remote release site was a whole new level. “There are so many potential dangers and situations that could arise at any given time. I had to remain constantly vigilant in that environment which was exhausting. But the joy of seeing the cubs living free, doing what wild bears do, was worth every scare and every uncomfortable moment.” Deforestation is the number one threat to the sun bears and orangutans, and Murtagh is appealing to Sunshine Coast locals to be aware of products that contain palm oil and its derivatives, especially cosmetics and cleaning products. “I’ve seen with my own eyes the huge amount of deforestation happening in Central Kalimantan and I know [the] bears can’t survive in disturbed habitat. Murtagh is now studying veterinary nursing and hopes to get a job at one of the zoos or wildlife sanctuaries on the Sunshine Coast. She also has a long-term goal to set up a sun bear sanctuary in Borneo, a project that would involve negotiating a tonne of red tape and take hundreds of thousands of dollars to achieve. “It’s a huge undertaking and it’s an idea at the moment, but I’m pretty good at making ideas come to fruition. If it’s something I’m passionate about, I’m like a bull at a gate.” To donate to the Orangutan Foundation International, visit orangutan.org.au.

MY OPINION

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY

A FISH CALLED PEPPA PIG

Don’t scoff at the Gold Coast – it can teach us a thing or two about hospitality and urban renewal, writes Bill Darby.

Sami Muirhead gets a sobering lesson about life and death from her kids.

W

e have had a big week of life and death in our little household with small children.

Our fish died. I found poor old Peppa Pig (the then two-year-old named him) looking a little sick and I was worried about the cold weather for an ailing little fellow. So I did what any sensible person would do: I took him to the only heated room in our house and wrapped his bowl in foil to try and insulate it. The next morning I found Peppa floating belly up and was quite sure he had gone to the big lake in the sky. My friends are accusing me of boiling Peppa to death. I am having none of it. It was a humanitarian mission that failed. When our Super Nan arrived to steer the domestic ship when I was about to leave for work, I whispered in frantic tones, “I am pretty sure Peppa has died, but I cannot bear to look at him or touch him so can you please deal with him and for goodness sake’s do not tell the kids as they will be so upset.” Off to work I went, confident Peppa would be discreetly buried or unceremoniously flushed. Nope. Super Nan is in her mid-70s and from the land where death is part of daily life. This was her chance to teach my city kids about nature and the cruel cycle of life. I am fairly sure my kids think meat

is magic and just appears on the shelf. So I received the first of many shocking but hilarious texts of the ceremony for the burial of the fish underway at home. First, the two-yearold and the four-year-old held the fish in a purple satin strip of fabric. He was lying in state. Then they all made a coffin covered in flowers and butterflies. Then a hole was dug in the bark garden near the swimming pool under the hibiscus tree. Some beautiful words were spoken I was told. The two-year-old screamed, “Darth Vader is a baddie Then the four-year-old chimed in: “What are we having for dinner?”. Clearly, she too was coping with this monumental sliding door point of her life. The foam shark head was yanked off the blue pool noodle to be used as a tomb stone and Super Nan announced the ceremony was over and everyone went back to their business. I arrived home from work later that night and was expecting fragile and emotional children. We asked our cherubs, “So do you understand that Peppa is in heaven now?”, to which we received a reply straight out of the mouths of babes. It went like this: “Do not be silly Mum, he is lying out under the red flower tree.”

I

t’s become quite noticeable over the past few months that a fresh wave of collaboration is taking hold amongst the Sunshine Coast’s business and tourism communities. This region has suffered more than its fair share of division over the past few years, with the bringing together of multiple shires and then the eventual split from Noosa. With time healing all wounds, the new Sunshine Coast seems to be finding its own identity and in doing so, enjoying a renewed sense of optimism. With tourism statistics revealing growth well beyond that of other Queensland destinations, the pressure is on us to ensure we deliver on the brand promise and continue to build visitor numbers. Cruise boats are now firmly on the agenda for Mooloolaba, and the new Qantas flights announced last week will enable tens of thousands of people access to the Coast. Now is our opportunity to make the most of our export potential, for both business and tourism. I believe we have the great advantage of observing what our big brother the Gold Coast does as it consolidates its position as an economic juggernaut. Sadly, there are those who will read this column and scoff at the idea that we should compare ourselves to the Gold Coast. We’re talking high rise, pub crawls and schoolies right? Delve a bit deeper and a whole new side of the Gold Coast is revealed.

In recent times, the Gold Coast has attracted a lot of talent. A number of world-class chefs now call the Gold Coast home and communities such as Mermaid Beach are reinventing themselves through urban renewal projects authentic to their heritage. Even the bright lights of Broadbeach conceal a highly advanced level of hospitality and personalised customer service that leave most Sunshine Coast businesses for dead. A glowing example of successful urban planning locally surely has to be the Ocean Street precinct. On any given weekend, these Maroochydore restaurants and clubs are packed, leaving neighbouring tourist towns scratching their heads wondering where they went wrong. This happened without 50-storey buildings. The Sunshine Coast is big enough, and close enough to Brisbane to warrant a number of innovative urban renewal projects for all of us to enjoy. For some reason though, we’re slow in going about it. There’s an old saying: a good plan executed today, is a much better than rolling out a perfect plan one day. With an election year coming up, there’s no better time to let your councillor know it’s time for action.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

ALDI SCARES THE BIG GUYS Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

B

ack in March, Ord Minnett focused on Woolworths, highlighting the ‘lighten’ recommendation on the shares and the competitive pressures that its supermarkets business was facing. Recently, the German supermarket retailer Aldi provided a submission to the Senate Economics References Committee in response to an inquiry into corporate tax avoidance and minimisation. Aldi’s response, which detailed its financial performance from 2010 to 2013, provides an insight into its profitability and affords a comparison with its main rivals – Coles, which is owned by Wesfarmers (recommendation: hold), Woolworths (recommendation: lighten) and Metcash (recommendation: sell). In 2013, Aldi sold $5 billion of

groceries, which generated profit before tax of $261 million – a profit margin of 5.2 per cent. Sales from existing Aldi stores grew by high-single digits each year from 2010 to 2013, well ahead of Coles and Woolworths. Importantly, Aldi’s sales growth remains strong, with media reports that 2014 sales grew to $6 billion. Sales per square metre in 2014 are estimated to be around $13,500, up on $10,400 in 2010, yet below $15,700 for Coles and $16,600 for Woolworths. Aldi’s improving sales growth is consistent with it gaining market share. Aldi’s gain in profit-before-tax margin from 3.9 per cent in 2010 to 5.2 per cent in 2013 outpaces the achievements of Coles and Woolworths. This indicates the lower prices that Aldi offers compared with its peers are sustainable under its operating model: a low cost offering, reliance on private label and operating leverage from strong sales growth. Aldi’s margin is higher than Coles’ (4.6 per cent) but below Woolworths’

(7.5 per cent). This points to increasing pressure on Woolworths’ ability to maintain its margin and the broader challenges from Aldi’s expanding market share. Poor financial performance at Aldi would deter potential entrants into grocery retailing. Instead, its glowing report card raises the prospect of other offshore retailers setting up shop in Australia, including fellow German discounter Lidl. This would add further pressure to the incumbents, including Coles, Woolworths and Metcash supplied IGA stores. Coles has the ability to undertake a variety of cost reductions and business improvements to support its profit margin, hence our ‘hold’ recommendation on Wesfarmers. However, Metcash is facing greater challenges, especially as Aldi expands into South Australia and Western Australia, where Metcash supplied stores have higher market share (25 to 30 per cent versus 15 per cent nationally). Following the announcement of the

retirement of Woolworths’ chief executive officer, a question mark sits over its supermarket strategy – a greater effort to deliver lower prices could shrink margins. TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe gives his opinion on the best brews of the week.

T

his week we’ve got another treat of a beer for you and I’m all over it like Mick Fanning’s fists on a great white’s snout. No seriously, how good is Mick Fanning? The real question is: Is Mick Fanning the greatest Australian EVER? The answer is YES. I believe the time has come to honour the great man Fanning with some Chuck Norris style accolades. Neil Armstrong may have been the first man to walk on the moon my friends, but Mick Fanning has walked on the sun. When the boogie man goes to bed at night, he checks under the bed for Mick Fanning. Mick Fanning has a grizzly bear rug in his house. It’s not dead – it’s just afraid to move. Mick Fanning likes his meat so rare, he only eats unicorns. Some people wear Superman pyjamas; Superman wears Mick Fanning pyjamas. I could go on and on like a 1990s Kevin Costner movie, but the fact is Mick Fanning is easily the 2015 Strayan of the year. If this is the case, then our local lad Julian Wilson should be knighted for his ace bravery at J

Bay in South Africa. In fact Tony Abbott, how ‘bout you Indian give the knighthood you dished out to Sir Prince Phillip to Willo? What a champion! Sir Julian Wilson. Well played son. Whilst many others may have thought, “I don’t have to outswim the shark, I’ve just gotta outswim the Mick”, you paddled towards the attack trying to help ya buddy. Somebody call Kenny Loggins baby, ‘coz Willo was halfway to the Danger Zone. This will go down as one of the truly great, iconic tales of Aussie mateship. This week’s brew is from Tooheys Brothers and it’s their all-new Darling Pale Ale. Now I gotta admit, I’ve got about as much love for Toohey’s beers of late as I do for Crocs footwear and Kim Kardashian updates. I gave drinking Toohey’s New away years ago, but slap me silly and call me Nancy if the master brewers at Toohey’s haven’t created a little gem. The Darling is a refreshing pale ale with a cracking fruity hops aroma and a well balanced, crisp malt flavour. It’s a cheeky little winner and with no additives or preservatives, it surely has the same health benefits of a green smoothie thingo. I’d recommend one after your morning jog, just before breakfast. That’s how Mick Fanning stays in shark fighting shape. I give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

ESSENTIAL CHECKLIST Swap the stress for serenity and enjoy planning your wedding with My Weekly Preview’s wedding guide.

ove comes free, right? Not according to the annual Bride to Be Cost of Love survey, which reports that Australian couples are dishing out, on average, more than $65,000 on weddings. It comes as no surprise that many are taking out loans to pay for their big day. So with this news comes some valuable advice – set a budget and stick to it. But it doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the things you love. Highlight the most important things and allocate more funds to those. Once you have a budget in mind, there are a number of ways you can reduce costs, such as considering a weekday wedding, serving the cake instead of dessert, have a daytime reception and avoid the costs of a sit-down meal, make your own centrepieces, choose flowers that are in season as they are cheaper and make the invitations. With the budget sorted, it’s time to start planning.

IT STARTS WITH A RING Men have been showing their love with diamonds for hundreds of years. In fact, the earliest record is from 1477 when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond engagement ring to Mary of Burgundy. Today the diamond is a symbol of commitment and finding the perfect engagement ring – and wedding bands – isn’t as challenging as some may think. As long as you go to your jeweller armed with some knowledge of the four c’s – colour, cut, clarity and carat – you will be fine. CUT: The cut shouldn’t be confused with the shape of the diamond, but instead refers to the way it is faceted. It’s about the symmetry, proportion and polish of the diamond, which promotes the greatest amount of light to be reflected through. The better the cut, the more sparkle. COLOUR: Diamonds come in many colours but the majority are in the yellow to white range. A colourless stone will be Cotton Tree’s NY2K can handcraft you the perfect engagement and wedding rings, such as this beautiful piece.

This stunning vintage inspired diamond ring is from To Have & To Hold

rated from a D (colourless) to a Z (a light yellow). Those in the D, E or F range will be in the high end price bracket. CLARITY: Clarity refers to the presence or absence of internal flaws and surface blemishes known as inclusions. A flawless diamond will be much more brilliant than a flawed one. However, they are rare. CARAT: Like all precious stones, diamonds are weighed in carats. One carat equals .2 grams and the larger the stone, the more expensive it will be. Keep in mind, the size of the diamond doesn’t always mean it’s better.

CHOOSING A VENUE One of the biggest decisions you will make in planning your big day is choosing the venue. Here, Kellie Armstrong from The Lake House in Brightwater shares her tips for finding the right one: • Make sure your venue provides a wet weather option • Ample on-site parking is important • Consider the benefits of holding the ceremony and reception at the same venue

• Check whether the audio visual technology is up to date • Consider the amenities for your guests – pristine bathrooms are a must • Ensure the venue has professional food and beverage staff who appreciate the importance of your big day. “The ability to tailor make each wedding reception so that a couple’s dream and vision for their wedding day is delivered,’’ Armstrong adds.

Pelican Waters Golf Course makes the experience of planning your big day as enjoyable as the day itself. With green fairways and a scenic lake, this venue provides not only options for your ceremony and reception, but also great photo locations. The club caters for informal and formal receptions including cocktail style or sit-down.

“Natural, not too posed, candid, elegant and captivating are some of the words my clients have used when describing my work” – Carly Head of carlylooyah.com.au

Images are a lasting memory, so it’s important to choose the right photographer.

When selecting a venue for your big day, it’s important to think about photo opportunities. Mooloolaba, with its stunning surf and sand, is a popular setting. The Surf Club Mooloolaba offers the perfect trio that bridal couples seek for their beach wedding: magnificent views, fine food and impressive service. Ceremonies can be held on the beach before retreating to either an open-air or indoor reception space. What’s more, a professional team of wedding coordinators will guide you through the planning process.

Hire someone who you feel comfortable with and discuss options for photos – what you like and don’t like. Here are some great wedding photography locations on the Coast: • Mooloolaba Beach • Mooloolaba Spit • Point Cartwright • Caloundra’s Shelly Beach • Dicky Beach • The hinterland, including Maleny, Montville and Flaxton • Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens • Noosa

For any mother, a daughter’s wedding day is a momentous occasion. Charlotte from Essential Style boutique at Cotton Tree offers some tips for selecting the perfect mother-of-the-bride attire. • Avoid choosing the same colour or clashing with the bridesmaids’ dresses. • Go shopping with an open mind. • Try two or three outfits that appeal to you, but also let the sales assistant choose a couple of styles too. Quite often, the dress that didn’t jump out or has no hanger appeal can be the nicest on. • Choose the correct underwear to suit your body and the outfit. • Take a pair of nude heels shopping as they will give you better posture and the colour will enhance and elongate the leg.

According to the annual Bride to Be Cost of Love survey, brides and grooms spend a combined $3100 on their outfits. With so much money at stake, it’s important to take good care of your special gown. Bundilla Dry Cleaners suggests the use of preservation boxing once you are finished with your dress. These boxes come with acid-free tissue paper which surrounds the gown to ensure no penetration of moist air or day light.

With all the planning and organising of a wedding, sometimes it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. It’s a good idea to pencil in a day of relaxation in the lead-up to your wedding. Mooloolaba’s Waterfall Day Spa is a tranquil paradise offering a range of treatments. Our favourite is the signature spa treatment which includes a frangipani body polish, hydrating fruit body mask and massage. Bliss.

One of the most exciting things about organising your wedding is planning the honeymoon. Here, Kristen New from We Know Travel shares her tips on planning the perfect getaway. Book early – The earlier the better to avoid disappointment. You might also be able to secure early-bird packages or special offers. Beach vs city – There’s no point in looking at beachy, romantic resorts if they’re not your thing. Are you an adventurous couple? Cultural? Or do you really just want a romantic getaway? These are just a few of the things you’ll need to consider. Check the weather – You book your wedding date and venue around the weather, so why don’t you book your honeymoon around the weather too? Name change – Most of the time a bride probably won’t have time to change her name straight away, but it’s important to wait if your maiden name is the one on your passport. Lastly, relax and enjoy!

BMW’S NEW i-OPENER Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the ELECTRIC i3.

F

irst came the iMac. Then the iPod, the iPad and, of course, the iPhone. Now there’s the iCar. But this one’s not made by Apple – it’s a BMW. The German prestige maker’s most radical, most economical and, in many ways most interesting car ever has arrived. The electric i3. It might not have emerged from the creative genius of Steve Jobs, but it’s every bit as surprising, wonderful and delightful in its own way as those Apple products that have so transformed our lives. The i3 is unlike any car I’ve ever driven – in performance, appearance and driving dynamics. BMW boasts this is the first electric vehicle purpose-built from the ground up to accommodate electric power and the large, heavy batteries that sustain it. Its construction is largely of lightweight plastics and carbon fibre. It’s a bit ungainly from the outside, but certainly wins plenty of glances. Inside, it’s even more idiosyncratic. If I were being unkind, I might suggest

the cockpit looks like a collection of odd bits they found sitting around the factory floor. Composite mouldings surround the dashboard and door trims; other materials include sustainable textiles and recycled plastics and polyester. There are two basic versions of the i3, one which relies solely on electric charge, starting from $63,900 plus onroads. Another (our test machine, called the REx) that adds a tiny, two-cylinder petrol engine to recharge the battery on extended journeys, costs $6000 more. The engine is not visible and is barely audible when it kicks into life, emitting a very faint purr from the rear of the little hatchback when the electric batteries require a boost. The i3 is extraordinary to drive, although it takes a bit of getting used to. The gearshift is like a little pod on the right side of the steering wheel. Push away from you for forward, pull back for neutral and reverse. The car is amazingly responsive and nippy. It jumps from zero to 60 kilometres per hour in just over three seconds, and to

the speed limit in about seven. Top speed is an impressive 150 kilometres per hour and it’s quite at home on the open road. The i3 is, without question, the most manoeuverable machine I’ve driven. Without axles or drive shafts, the steering wheels can turn freely to enable a ridiculously tight turning circle. So, how far will it go? BMW claims up to 150 kilometres when fully charged, although our experience was closer to 120 kilometres. The additional 150 kilometres or so offered by the range-extender engine gives the i3 a total range of about 300 kilometres if driven at its most economical. You can squeeze extra efficiency by choosing from one of three driving modes.

Default mode is Comfort while the other choices are EcoPro (which trims power usage) and then EcoPro Plus, which turns off things like climate control and other electronics, and limits top speed to 90 kilometres per our in order to make the batteries last as long as possible. An energy gauge in one of two colour screens on the i3’s dashboard allows you to see whether you’re draining or charging the battery (it replenishes when you brake or decelerate) and it’s tempting to drive as smoothly as possible in order to stretch your range. That, of course, is what the i3 is all about. It’s innovative. It’s very different. And I suspect, in due course, it will inevitably catch on. Just like those other i-things.

NEWS ROUND-UP PALMWOODS PROPERTY ATTRACTS A CROWD

RENTERS FACE TIGHT MARKET New vacancy rate data from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland reveals Brisbane and the south-east corner of the state have healthy to tight vacancy rates across all markets. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says despite low interest rates that have been encouraging people to move out of rented property and into their own homes, demand for rental accommodation in the inner city remains strong. “People are choosing to live where they can be close to entertainment, work and transport and this is reflected in the vacancy rate data,” she says. The REIQ classifies vacancy rates of 2.5 per cent or below as tight and rates of 2.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent as healthy. A vacancy rate of 3.6 per cent or above is a sign of a weak rental market. The Sunshine Coast dipped from 1.9 per cent to 1.5 per cent, reflecting continued tight conditions, largely due to seasonal workers and relocations from Brisbane. “The trend of people commuting to Brisbane from the Sunshine Coast is continuing and, as people seek to leave the city and opt for a sea change, this places pressure on rental accommodation,” Mercorella says. It’s tight when compared with Brisbane City, which has a vacancy rate of 2.4 to three per cent. “This information suggests that demand for rental accommodation is keeping pace with supply.” Ipswich and Logan’s vacancy rates were both 2.8 per cent at the end of June, nudging up from 2.4 per cent and 2.1 per cent respectively. Moreton Bay registered a vacancy rate of 1.4 per cent, up from 1.3 per cent the previous quarter. Caboolture registered the lowest vacancy rate in the state at just one per cent.

There were 11 registered bidders at the auction.

MORE LAND NEEDED The Housing Industry Association is concerned that land supply shortages are preventing home buyers from entering the market. The HIA generates its HIACoreLogic RP Data Residential Land Report each quarter, and the March 2015 quarter report shows price growth accelerating as turnover falls sharply. “This is not a good combination – escalating residential land values and a related decline in sales volumes,” says HIA chief economist Harley Dale. “The upcycle in detached and low-density housing construction has been strong, without being stellar. The combination of significantly reduced turnover and strong price growth suggests that supply bottlenecks in residential land are intensifying. That is pricing new home buyers out of the housing market and capping the construction cycle at a lower level than would otherwise be the case.” Dale says providing enough affordable land is crucial to ensure the housing affordability issue is addressed. “More needs to be done to expedite supply in 2015/16.” During the March 2015 quarter, the residential land price in Australia increased by 4.1 per cent compared with the previous quarter. This represented an increase of 8.2 per cent compared with the same quarter last year. During the March 2015 quarter, residential land transactions fell by 5.2 per cent compared with the previous quarter, to be 17.6 per cent lower than the same period 12 months earlier. The March 2015 quarter represents the third consecutive decline in land transactions in Australia.

More than 86 people attended the auction of 2 Nicklin Lane in Palmwoods, a property that consists of around 22 acres of land and features a brick home. Platinum Properties’ Steve Turner reports that he had more than 90 inspections through the four-week marketing campaign, with 86 people attending the auction and 11 of those registering as bidders. Bidding started at $500,000 and quickly progressed to $600,000. After 35 bids, Turner sold the property under the hammer for $660,000. The local Buderim couple who secured the property plan to renovate and make it their family home.

NEW BIRTINYA LAND RELEASE A new land release at Stockland’s popular Birtinya at Oceanside community has attracted strong interest from buyers. Stockland has released 11 new lots in Viridian Circuit, a quiet pocket adjacent to an expansive village park and lake area and minutes from the beach, cafes and shops. Home sites in this area of Oceanside Kawana start at $245,000 for a 250-square metre block, with lot sizes up to 498 square metres. Stockland development manager Mark McMahon says there has been a flurry of interest in the latest land release at Birtinya. “We continue to see strong interest from a range of buyers,” McMahon says. “The Viridian lots are particularly popular with people employed in the health sector as they are a short walk to the Kawana Health Campus and Oceanside Health Hub. We will soon be releasing a very limited number of exclusive waterfront lots and I would encourage anyone interested in Birtinya at Oceanside to register their interest now.” Viridian Circuit is a 10-minute stroll to the future Oceanside Town Centre. Located on the shores of Lake Kawana, Birtinya at Oceanside is part of the $5 billion Oceanside Kawana health, retail, commercial, education and residential hub. Find out more at oceansidekawana.com.au.

INTEREST RATE OUTLOOK GOOD NEWS FOR HOME OWNERS The Real Estate Institute of Australia believes home owners will be treated to low interest rates into the future. The June quarter CPI figures confirm the Reserve Bank of Australia’s assessment that inflationary pressures are well contained and are likely to remain so, says the REIA, and “this 40 My Weekly Preview | July 31, 2015

40.indd 1

should translate into a sustained period of low interest rates and be good news for home owners”, adds REIA president Neville Sanders. “In the June quarter, the CPI rose by 0.7 per cent and an annual rate of 1.5 per cent. These figures are below the RBA’s target zone of two to three per cent and

should not put pressure on the interest rate outlook,” Sanders says. “With inflation under control, combined with a slowdown in housing finance, it’s reasonable to expect the RBA Board will not be increasing interest rates in the medium term, providing a stable outlook for home buyers.” myweeklypreview.com.au

REED SNAPS UP FIRST LIGHT MOOLOOLABA A local developer secures the last development site within First Avenue.

O

ff the back of the recent $85 million sale of Maroochydore’s Big Top Market Fresh shopping centre and surrounding holdings, Queensland-based developer Reed Property Group (RPG) has purchased a new Mooloolaba development from the Guilfoyle Group. RPG’s head of development Jay Emmerton says the company has taken ownership of First Light Mooloolaba, a 13-level development consisting of 67 architecturally designed two-bedroom apartments and two penthouses. “First Light enables us to secure a prime position in the growing Mooloolaba market. The recent sale of Big Top Market Fresh proved to be the catalyst for the sale and we look forward to making the project a reality when our construction division, RCQ Construction, gets started on site in the coming months,” Emmerton says. First Light Mooloolaba was the brainchild of Guilfoyle Group co-director

41.indd 1

Simon Guilfoyle, who is delighted with the sale of the development to RPG. “I have been involved with this project since 2009 when I first bought the houses that occupied the site,” Guilfoyle says. “I have always been keen to have RCQ Construction as the builder. Both RPG and RCQ Construction possess an excellent track record in delivering successful commercial, retail and residential projects, and they are dedicated to supporting the local community. “I was interested in construction companies prepared to create local jobs rather than bringing in workers from Brisbane. This immediately struck a chord with RCQ Construction being based in Maroochydore and sharing the commitment to using a local workforce. “The market has given the development a tick of approval with 65 per cent of the apartments sold off the plan for $20 million following a soft launch in January.” Emmerton says RPG bought First

Light Mooloolaba because of its enviable location and its exclusivity as the last development site within First Avenue. He adds there are still apartments for sale, starting from $419,000. “We look forward to continuing to market First Light apartments and plan to commence construction late October this year subject to approvals,” he adds. “We expect the remaining stock will be snapped up quickly.” Reed Property Group has been responsible for the development of a number of well-regarded property projects across Queensland over the past two decades, including Big Top Market Fresh and m1, Platinum and Riva in Maroochydore, Flame Tree Pocket, The Parks and the Chancellor Village commercial precinct in Sippy Downs.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Imagine this…being sucked over the falls on a 20 foot bomb in Tahiti Teahupoo. Yep, last week’s footage of a Niccola Porcella being absolutely slaughtered. It will be hard to imagine a wipeout that is more severe. Check YouTube, it will blow your mind! How he survived is anyone’s guess. Cannot wait for the interview. My prediction – wipeout of the century. For those who remember last August, it was pumping! Best waves in a long time. So here is hoping we are set to enjoy the same next month. A sacrifice may be required. Burn a board and buy a new one! Well there will be some great conditions over the weekend so just enjoy! Small waves on offer.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are moving over the Maroochy Bar on the night rising tide with fish up to a kilo taking fowl gut, prawns and white bait. Flathead are working the yabby banks around Goat Island with live whiting attracting the bigger fish. There are still a few mud crabs at Bli. SURF: Dawn and dusk are the best times for tailor at Pincushion and along Kawana Beach with pillies the best bait. Baby blue pillies are returning bream and flathead in low tide gutters at Twin Waters and Marcoola. You can get sand whiting and dart on pippies at Mudjimba. OFFSHORE: Sweetlip, parrot and moses perch are working the close in reefs off Mooloolaba and Caloundra with early evening the best time. Cut baits are returning the better quality. Wider reefs are best for snapper, pearlies and trag jew using pillies and plastics. FRESHWATER: The Borumba Dam level is high making it easier to sound out where bass and golden perch are schooling. The old eagles nest is returning saratoga on shallow diving lures and floated baits. Lake Baroon is worth a visit for spangled perch and bass with earthworms and jigged lures the best bait.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Get set for a turbulent week as Venus (your ruling planet) hooks up with prosperity planet Jupiter – and then squares sombre Saturn. A piece of good luck could fall into your lap – followed by the realisation that you’ll have to work very hard to maintain it.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) You start the week well with a novel idea or an ingenious plan, but the planets also stir up your restless nature and shorten your attention span. Superficial chit-chat won’t be appreciated on Thursday so don’t skim over the surface when communicating with others.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Many Cancers are (or were) creative entrepreneurs – like John D. Rockefeller, Richard Branson, Gisele Bundchen and Khloe Kardashian. This week, with so many planets in your money zone, all types of business projects are highlighted.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Lions love luxury and often charm their way out of doing menial chores. But with Venus reversing through Leo (until September 6) your charisma may not work on others. So it would be better to just roll your sleeves up and do the jobs that need to be done.

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) You love to help others and feel useful. A friend or family member may be drawn to you for support and you’re in the mood to listen. Mercury (your ruling planet) moves into your sign on Friday (until August 27) when you’ll be t your logical best as you multi-task with flair.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) With Venus in retro mode, life is difficult for many love-obsessed Librans. Relationships are rocky and, if you’re single, your soul mate seems to be delayed! It’s important to have a goal you’re aiming for – something that can transport you to a future bigger than just you.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) When it comes to professional matters, it’s a terrific time to broaden your knowledge and update your skills. Contacts with work colleagues, clients or customers also prove beneficial, but make sure you do all the checks before you commit to a new course of action.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) With Jupiter (your ruling planet) squaring Saturn, it will be a stop/start kind of week as projects proceed slowly. Be patient! If you are in it for the long-run, you’ll gradually make progress. The stars could also send a travel or business break your way, but it’s not a free ride.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Hey Capricorn - can you be extra diplomatic and oh-so discreet? You’ve been told something in strict confidence … so make sure you keep it to yourself. If you’ve got to make an important decision about something that’s troubling you, follow your intuition.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Dramas are likely at home or work, unless you stay calm. A colleague or loved one is feeling unsettled, so don’t take negative comments personally. If you are reckless with relationships, then you could find yourself with a fractious friend – or livid lover.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Energy levels are fluctuating so pace yourself. With five planets in your wellbeing zone, focus on your health – but choose food and exercise routines that are flexible and enjoyable. And do you wish there were more hours in the day so you can tackle the jobs that need to be done?

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) A friend or lover requires some guidance, but rushing will mess up a sensitive situation. More patience is needed if you want to help rather than hinder. Sometimes you just have to step back and let loved ones make their own mistakes in their own individual way.

THE LAST WORD

LET’S FLAG THE IDEA The Australian flag is in need of an image upgrade, writes Richard O’Leary.

S

o one of my old stomping grounds, the Northern Territory, wants to join the big kids in the political sandpit known as the Commonwealth of Australia. State leaders at the Council of Australian Governments meeting last week agreed with the push by the NT to become its own state by July 1, 2018. I’m all for it as it would give the Territory the same political footing as every other jurisdiction for the first time. But there is the small problem of the Australian flag. With a seventh state, the Commonwealth star would have to be altered, which is a bitter pill to swallow for our Prime Minister who is not only a dyed-in-the-wool conservative, but a monarchist to boot. “I’m not in favour of changing the flag, I’ve got to say, although I have to say that if the Commonwealth star was to be a seven-pointer star rather than a six-pointer star, that’s hardly a massive

change,” Mr Abbot says. But why restrict the change to that – if it was going to be altered anyway, why wouldn’t we have a sensible discussion about the design of the flag itself? I for one have never felt comfortable about having another flag in the corner of our own. When you see the stars and stripes of the American flag you automatically know who and what it represents. The same can be said about the red maple leaf of Canada – which it should be noted is only 50 years old, yet has already become an iconic image of that nation. Our flag will be flapping in the breeze for a very long time before it gets the same instant recognition. The first argument mounted by supporters of the flag will be that diggers in World War I fought and died for it. That claim is questionable. Although the current Australian flag has been around since 1901 (it was

the winning entry in a magazine competition of the same year), it only officially became our national flag in 1954. When MWP spoke with Peter FitzSimons earlier this year about his well-received history of Gallipoli, he said: “If the Australian flag was sighted [at Gallipoli], it was rare indeed and I never came across reference to it.” I think Ausflag, a group pushing for a change to our flag, sums it up pretty well. “A truly Australian flag must represent: Our nation and its people. Our past, present and future. Our land. Our equality and diversity. Our achievements. Our hopes and aspirations.” I don’t think the current flag does that… do you? roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
