f I ever need to look for motivation I often turn to my two boys. Considering how different they are from each other, it’s amazing how they both have the same effect on me – pushing me to become the best person and dad that I can possibly be. In this Father’s Day edition, we meet a few local dads, and the children who have inspired them to be healthier, happier and high on life. Also this week, you will meet one of the region’s best known conservationists, get up close and personal with the recently voted Sunshine Coast Outstanding Business Woman of the Year, and test drive the new Subaru which has been described as the perfect Forester. In My Opinion, Sami Muirhead gives us an insider’s look at the grown-up colouring-in craze, while Carolyn Tucker looks at a possible trump card for Australian politicians. As always, there is plenty of property, including a profile on one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular suburbs. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? The Sunshine Coast & Hinterland Branch of Wildlife Queensland’s annual report for the State AGM of Wildlife Queensland next month. There are some 17 branches throughout Queensland and these reports and the get-together at the AGM gives members the chance to discover what other branches are doing, catch up and network with people they mightn’t see from one year to the next. . . and generally reinforce and support the efforts all branches are making towards promoting and conserving a sustainable environment for the benefit of all life. I’m also familiarising myself with the wildflowers likely to be seen when we take guided walks through Ben Bennett Botanical Park and the Currimundi Lake Kathleen McArthur Conservation Park.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Thirty-seven years.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? We moved down here from Toowoomba, after living on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, for my husband and son’s health. It’s a wonderful place to live, with a great climate, the opportunity to take part in so many activities and join so many groups, friendly people, the beaches, the hinterland, and the many existing bushland environments, even though some of the latter still need campaigns mounted to preserve them as significant environmental areas.

The inability of the Federal Government to understand that the Great Barrier Reef is a living reef, a complex living entity, one of the amazing natural wonders of the world, (on a purely economic scale worth millions of dollars to the Queensland and Australian economy annually) and must not be put at risk of destruction by siltation and pollution, with the added international shame of losing its UNESCO World Heritage listing, by their obsession with mega coal mines and coal loading ports to be permitted adjacent to the waters of the reef.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? By lobbying government and supporting campaigns which highlight the dangers these proposals pose to the reef.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Believe in yourself and stand up for what you consider to be right.

WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE AND HOW DO YOU HAVE IT? Coffee. Mostly black but also flat white.

CHANGE OF HEART

Meet three very different Sunshine Coast dads who have been inspired by their children to change their lives for the better. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

“She’s definitely proud of the fact that I got off my arse after the heart attack and turned myself around”

Bec and Laurie Wilson in training. Image: Greg Gardner Photography

LAURIE AND BEC WILSON Laurie Wilson was a stressed executive doing long hours, drinking too much and not eating well. In November 2013, as he walked down the 18th fairway of the Horton Park Golf Course, he was struck down by a heart attack. “All of a sudden I had spots in front of my eyes, shortness of breath, I felt my life was disappearing in front of me,” the Warana man recalls. “I sat down on my golf buggy and couldn’t move.” Tests found Laurie had a kink in his coronary artery, like a bent garden hose stopping the flow of water. After surgery, he began a cardiac rehab course with people significantly older than himself and was out of breath after the shortest of exercises. It was a tough wake-up call. He knew the heart attack could have been a lot worse and resolved to make a major life change. Laurie found inspiration in the form of his daughter Bec, a 31-year-old corporate lawyer and adventure racer based in Brisbane. Today, at the age of 62, Laurie has lost ten kilos, quit drinking and is training for one of the world’s toughest sporting challenges: the New Zealand Coast to Coast mountain race. A 12 My Weekly Preview | September 4, 2015

12.indd 1

multi-sport event that traverses 243 kilometres across the South Island, Laurie and Bec will run, cycle and kayak over the mountains in a tandem team over two days in February 2016. “We laughed about it as a family at first,” says Laurie, who with his wife, has crewed for Bec twice on the event and knows the ropes. “My wife said ‘no way, you’ll kill yourself. You’re an old man, you shouldn’t be doing that sort of crap’. Initially, I didn’t believe I would. I started walking, jogging, going up and down Mount Coolum and gradually building it to the point where it’s become a reality and now we’re officially entered in the race.” Laurie’s other daughter Melissa sided with his wife, both concerned about another problem – Laurie has had rheumatoid arthritis since he was ten. But Bec had a different perspective. “He came and crewed for me at Coast to Coast and I could always tell he was a bit excited being around it,” she says. She thought it was just the motivation her dad needed to start exercising. “She said, ‘I’d never let you do it by yourself Dad, but if you want to do it let’s do it as a team and I’ll get you down the

river’,” Laurie says. “I’ve got arthritis in my shoulder, so 70 kilometres of paddling with be a challenge.” Before the heart attack, Laurie was general manager for a Brisbane-based company making alcohol breath testing instruments. He spent up to four months overseas, made 40 trips to China and picked up a virus each time, one sending him deaf in one ear. Now he’s handed over the GM role, scaled back his hours and taken on a role with more flexibility. “It’s amazing watching Dad’s transformation,” says Bec. “He’s making huge improvements and cleaning up every area of his life. He’s getting faster and fitter. I’ve seen a big transformation both physically and mentally. I think achieving something like this will be a bit of a pinnacle for both of us.” “Our goal is for me to simply complete the event,” says Laurie. “For my daughter, it will be a training run. I call it trying to create a nursing home moment. You sit back and think, remember when we did the Coast to Coast back in the old days? “She’s definitely proud of the fact that I got off my arse after the heart attack and turned myself around. One of the things about changing your focus is that

things that were part of your life and important, are no longer important. “What does your life revolve around? My life revolved around work and getting to four o’clock and thinking, I can’t wait till the end of the day to have a drink and wind down because of the stress. Six months after the heart attack, I got to the point of thinking, why do I need to sit down and have a glass of wine or beer at the end of the day? “I’ve realised being fitter and healthier, eating better and not drinking alcohol, you feel so much better and have so much more energy. Life’s a whole lot better.”

DAVID AND TALLON JAY GILSON Every parent knows the gut-wrenching distress of waking in the night to a very sick child. That distress is intensified when you’re a single parent with your child’s life entirely in your hands. David Gilson of Nambour went through a night like that one Saturday night in August when his 16-month-old son Tallon woke up crying and struggling to breathe. “It just wasn’t right, and when I turned the light on he was shaking and that really myweeklypreview.com.au

BRENDEN SAINTY AND JAIMEN CUNNING

Tallon Jay Gilson and David Gilson upset me,” he says. “I threw him in the car, ran a couple of red lights – it was about 12 o’clock at night so there was nobody on the streets at all. I didn’t want to wait for the ambulance. I got him to Nambour Hospital Emergency and his oxygen saturation levels were 68 instead of the normal 92 to 95.” David spent two nights with Tallon in hospital and barely slept. It was an all too familiar scene; he and Tallon’s mother had spent a week in the intensive care unit with Tallon when, at six weeks old, he contracted bronchiolitis and nearly died. “He got better after that but he’s always had a rattle in his chest, so every time he gets sick you’ve got to watch him,” David says. “Something I’d like to get out there is I spent my last $100 at the hospital on bits and pieces, food and diapers. I had no money when I left. I went to the Salvation Army and two people overheard my story as they were walking past. One lady emptied her pockets and gave me her loose change and another fellow gave a $50 note for the Salvation Army to give to me and my son. I’d love to thank them and the hospital and the Salvation Army for being fantastic.” David, 35, is no stranger to struggle,

but says the bubbly little boy with blond hair and a big smile has inspired him to turn his life around. “I’ve grown up on the Sunshine Coast my whole life and lived at a camping ground or caravan park for 14 years. [Tallon’s mother and I] tried for a house but that didn’t work out. We broke up and I moved out by myself and found a place in Nambour which is perfect for myself and my son.” Gilson says becoming a father has changed him immeasurably. “I used to be a bit of a hooligan,” he says. “He’s made me grow up quite quickly and start looking after myself and he’s given me something to focus on and to make me want to better myself and my situation for him. Now I’m in a lovely house with lovely furniture, the fridge is full and we’re doing very well. I changed my whole situation and it’s all for him. “My goal is just to be able to do the best I can with him. It’s all new to me, being a father. I’ve got no idea how to do it, but a couple of friends have been helping. “I love playing with him, taking him places. He’s always got a big smile on him, apart from when he’s really sick. He’s got this laugh and this giggle about him which is just magical.”

Fathering a teenage son is challenging enough, but taking on the role of stepdad to a teenage son is a whole new ball game. Three years ago, Brenden Sainty, 34, began a relationship with a Landsborough woman, Jill, and they moved in together. Her son Jaimen was living with his dad initially and visiting every second weekend. Brenden was excited but daunted at the prospect of playing part-time stepdad to Jaimen, who began testing the boundaries. “I walked into an established family when he was 12 years-old and I missed out on 13 years of practice,” says Brenden. “It’s the age he’s maturing and finding himself in the world, and someone else is stepping into his house and trying to say, hey I’m in charge.” “We were kind of distant,” says Jaimen, now 15 and living with his mum and Brenden in Landsborough most of the time. “We never talked to each other or did anything together.” Brenden had to quickly shift his priorities from those of a single guy to a family man. He talked the reluctant teenager into attending a week-long rites of passage camp through Powerhouse Programs. In the lead-up to the week away, Brenden and Jaimen did a communication skills weekend together called Building Bridges, where they learnt tools and techniques to improve communication. Next they went bush, to a secluded placed called The Rock, near Mount Byron, west of Dayboro. They spent a week with other fathers and male mentors and their sons, sans technology, sitting in a circle and sharing stories. Jaimen rebelled at first, but by the end said he’d had a brilliant time and didn’t want to leave. They’ve since returned twice and plan to go again in September. “They go out as boys and they return as young men,” says Brenden. “It’s something that’s missing from today’s

society. We don’t do anything for boys to become men; there’s a lot of adult men running around who have missed that chance and still have boy values.” It has definitely improved our friendship and communication,” says Jaimen. “I learnt a lot of things about him and it made me open up to him. We became more honest and in that way, we were able to talk to each other. He told me about his childhood and how he was at my age, stuff like that. “I don’t know if he’s different now, but if he’s getting angry or he’s just upset, I understand him more. I kind of know how he feels about it and I can see his point of view. We can talk to each other now. He’s always making jokes and it’s pretty good.” Brenden says he’s learnt a lot about himself on the camps. “I get a lot of feedback from the other guys that I’m doing a good job. I don’t feel it. I find it such a struggle for myself, to be a stepdad, to be involved in a family and think of family values rather than just personal values. “But Jaimen now talks about how much he can see that I try and put an effort in. I breathe a sigh of relief. It’s worth the effort.”

FLYING HIGH

2h 18m 30s

Sunshine Coast Airport is flying high after recording its best monthly passenger figures for nearly a year. There were more than 80,000 passengers in July, a 7.3 per cent increase on the same month last year. All three airlines – Jetstar, Virgin and Air New Zealand – posted double-digit growth. The figures build on the recent National Visitor Survey that revealed a 9.2 per cent increase in domestic travel to the Sunshine Coast.

SURF RESCUE CHALLENGE

is the new course record for the Sunshine Coast Marathon following Samuel Woldemanuel’s efforts on the weekend. The Ethiopian finished 10 minutes ahead of Victorian Dion Finocchiaro, while the favourite Andrew Kimanthi from Kenya finished third. Fiona Kupresanin won the women’s marathon in a time of 3.00.59.

STORM SETS UP CAMP ON COAST

DIGITAL LOGBOOK A WINNER

The Sunshine Coast will become the Melbourne Storm’s major junior recruitment and development base following the club’s decision to establish an academy in the region next year. The NRL club’s National Youth Competition team will move to Sunshine Coast Stadium alongside feeder team, the Sunshine Coast Falcons. The academy will be headed by former Australian and NSW forward Matt Adamson.

A digital logbook for learner drivers has been named as the winning idea at the Startup Weekend Youth Sunshine Coast 2015, the first event of its kind in Australia. Grade 10 student at Mountain Creek State High School, Josiah Bettenay, pitched Go Log, an app he and three classmates developed that replaces paper-based logbooks by allowing learner drivers to record their drives in digital form.

The International Surf Rescue Challenge continues this weekend at Maroochydore Beach as Australia competes against New Zealand, USA, and Japan. The event is held over three tests and includes swim, surf board, surf ski and beach events. Previous challenges have been held at Bondi, Durban in South Africa and Tauranga in New Zealand.

PROFILE

THANK GOD I’M A COUNTRY GIRL Award-winning business woman Roz White may have found business success on the Coast, but it’s her childhood on a country farm she draws on to keep forging ahead. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

W

hen Roz White was about seven, her big brother threw her on the back of a horse, whacked it on the backside and sent it flying. The horse riding ‘lesson’ was par for the course for the country kid, who grew up as one of eight siblings on a cattle, peanut and sorghum farm in the Burnett region, attending a one-teacher school in

Coalston Lakes. It was an upbringing characterised by hard work, strict parenting with an absence of mollycoddling and no shortage of fun. “I was driving tractors and trucks and mustering cattle, I was thrown in the cattle yards with bullocks and crazy Brahman cows,” she laughs. “You’re just expected to get on with it. There’s no negotiations and plenty of expectation.” “I had a very happy childhood. I look back on those years and smile to myself and think it’s probably what fortifies you for life and for business.” As the winner of this year’s Outstanding Business Woman of the Year at the recent Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network awards, White has a reputation for a strong work ethic combined with excellent people skills. With husband Michael, she owns three White’s Grocers (IGA Supermarkets) and employs around 200 people. “I just love them to bits,” she says. “It’s always the people. People are my passion and they’re absolutely fundamental in everything we do.”

She traces her love for connecting with people back to growing up on the farm with her four brothers and three sisters. “I looked up to all my siblings; I was just in awe of them. Being the youngest, that’s what you do.” You wouldn’t know it judging by White’s business success in recent years, but not so long ago, her world came crashing down. “In the last six years I’ve lost two siblings,” she says. “I lost my sister six years ago. She and I were very close and she passed away from cancer. It was completely devastating and rocked my socks to the deepest core. Three years after she passed away, my brother passed away very suddenly.” White used her work to anchor herself. “In some ways it was my saving grace. It was so painful to endure and work provided me with an avenue where I could keep my mind busy and detach from my emotions.” She also threw herself into her charity work with Montrose Access and says it’s the parents of children with disabilities

she meets through the organisation who inspire her more than anyone. “They face such adversity and with such courage. I’m just in awe of their incredible ability to adapt and function and deal with some very difficult circumstances.” With three businesses and two kids (Harrison, 19 and Sophie, 14) to look after, White is a busy woman, but she takes it all in her stride. “I have a little chuckle to myself sometimes. I lead such a different lifestyle to what I did back when I was 14. Being thrown in the cattle yard with a herd full of snotty Brahman cows and scrambling up rails trying to get away from them when they’re coming at you certainly gives you some sort of inner strength you can draw on. When you’ve got to face certain challenges in life you think, I survived that so I can survive anything.”

MY OPINION

WHERE ARE THE GREAT LEADERS?

COLOUR ME HAPPY

Australia is sadly lacking in leaders worthy of our trust and respect, writes media and communications specialist Carolyn Tucker.

When night falls, Sami Muirhead can’t wait to indulge in her guilty new pleasure.

M

y name is Sami and I am an addict. A colouring-in addict. I throw the kids into bed at night as fast as I can so I can resume my love affair with the pages of my French themed colouring-in book. We spend the hours drinking tea or wine and shading in pretty pictures of Paris, pale pink peonies and muted green macaroons. It is swoonworthy stuff. Do not judge me. Do not criticise me. Our colouring-in club is recruiting and seducing members worldwide at a rapid rate. The power of the Faber-Castell packet is powerful and intoxicating. Colouring-in books have made astonishing inroads to our bestsellers book lists around the world. Not colouring-in books for kids. Beautiful books full of outlines of botanicals in bloom, to gorgeous geometrics. This week five of the top 10 bestselling books on the Amazon adult book list are colouring-in books. Pass me the pencils, please! The books have taken off in popularity largely due to the fact they are touted as being relaxing. They are the new social media. The new drug we turn to in order to try and turn off the chaos at the end of the day. And I can vouch for their benefits. Instead of trying to fold clothing, jump on Facebook and write to-do

lists, I have been simply scribbling in my fancy French book and zenning out in bliss. Of course, my functional relationship with my box of pencils is making for a dysfunctional marriage. As I said earlier, the kids get whisked to their beds. The nighttime reading routine is being cut mercilessly short. There is no time for questions to my hubby about his day. I tell them all fibs that I have heaps of urgent work to do, when my tribe knows full well I am yet again hell bent on getting my fix. I skip down the stairs and I squiggle smugly away. Happy times for this pathological liar. Most nights I sip tea and colour but if I really want to party and get racy, I will pour a red wine or two and light some candles, turn up the jazz tunes, and colour to my heart’s content. Oh yes. It is heady stuff. So in a frustrated effort to join my exclusive club, my husband made the ultimate sacrifice and offered to colour in with me. I thought, well it would be nice to do it together. But then he did something that swiftly ended our new partner pencil-ship. He went outside the lines. That was the end of that.

For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

T

he mass despair about the current lack of leadership and vision for our nation is well-documented and widely acknowledged. Successive opinion polls have shown that we don’t like the look of Tony Abbott or Bill Shorten but suggest the Opposition will probably fall over the line next year as the least worst option. Grumbling about politicians is nothing new in Australia, but I cannot recall a time when there’s been such sustained disdain. Where is the passion, principle, intellect, wit, compassion and genuine desire to take us in any clear direction with confidence and an articulated plan for the future? How did we get here and what can be done to restore trust and respect? Retired Independent Member for New England, Tony Windsor, offered some sage words on this subject during a recent appearance on the ABC’s Q&A program. “We’re going through a very difficult period of time at the moment where there’s a loss of faith in the political process,” he said. “The way to change that is to get more involved in that process. I’ve had a saying for many years: ‘The world is run by those that turn up’.” He has a point. At the same time, I would suggest that our Federal Members of Parliament have an obligation to

include us in the national conversation and should stop fixating on themselves and each other. This disconnect between elected representatives and the community is not just confined to Australia and provides fertile ground for new entrants seeking to capitalise on it. For several months, billionaire Donald Trump has blundered around the United States like a wild-eyed cross between Clive Palmer and Pauline Hanson, railing against political correctness while hurling insults at reporters and threats at illegal immigrants. Commentators have consistently dismissed Trump’s tilt at becoming the Republican’s presidential candidate as a distraction, while his public support has grown stronger and his lead in the polls has grown longer. So who are these people flocking to sign on to team Trump? One well-respected columnist described his constituency as: “People who are tired of politicians who make promises and break them, tell them lies about what is happening in the country and the world, live a life of ‘entitlement’ in Washington while they struggle back on main street and everyone who wants someone to stick it to the man.” This alone should be a wake up call for our politicians. There’s still time for someone else to turn up and the electorate might just play the trump card.

5 STEPS TO COMBAT CELLULITE

AAP

Dimples are cute, but on your thighs? Not so much. If you’ve got cellulite, take heart – so do about 90 per cent of women of all shapes and sizes over the age of 20. Try these tips to reduce its appearance:

She won’t quit sugar Australian model and food writer Robyn Lawley is a natural beauty who won’t starve herself, quit sugar or follow fad diets to stay slim. Of quitting sugar, she told The Glow: “No, you kidding me? Especially not fruit. Fruit is fruit. Mother nature grew it. You pick it, you eat it. It’s very simple and I just think we’re getting really over-complicated and elaborate with all these diets and what you should and shouldn’t eat.”

Lawley’s best budget beauty tip: Use extra virgin coconut oil or olive oil in the shower to remove your makeup. It’s gentler and smells nicer than makeup remover.

1. Use a skin tightening cream to firm the skin and help smooth out the lumps and bumps. 2. Dry brushing – a sluggish lymphatic system contributes to cellulite. Buy a natural bristle brush and brush your body as a morning ritual before hopping in the shower to stimulate lymph flow. 3. Ask your beauty therapist about endermologie, which

MY LIFE

IT’S A SPRING THING Rose geranium oil has a rich, sweet floral scent. Dab a drop on your wrists and behind your ears or add it to massage oil or a diffuser. Not only does it smell beautiful, it has the following therapeutic benefits: • It’s anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and detoxifying, and when used on the skin it helps control sebum production. • It balances all skin types. • When inhaled or used in a massage oil, rose geranium oil can help relieve symptoms of PMS and hormonal imbalances. • It can help balance emotions, calm nerves and relieve anxiety. • It can help treat acne and relieve symptoms of eczema.

QUICK FIT TIP The best workout is a fun workout and it doesn’t get more fun than hula hooping. Head to your nearest toy shop, grab a hoop and start swinging those hips. Hula hooping is a total body workout that tones your arms, strengthens your core muscles and works your legs. It also improves joint flexibility and balance. Plus, it’s relaxing and will put a big smile on your dial.

BODY BEAUTIFUL Shift the focus to how you feel rather than how you look, writes naturopath Jodi Chapman.

A

gonising over body weight, shape, appearance, and aging is something that we all do in different ways, though for some it becomes an obsession, causing anxiety, depression, worthlessness, and low self-esteem. It’s not a new phenomenon; comparing ourselves to beautiful people like celebrities, sports stars and models has always happened. Its human nature. The more we see through worldwide media, the worse it gets. Comparing ourselves to others is normal and begins at a young age. It’s how we learn how to find our place in society, and how we learn about ourselves. It’s when our self-image is negative that it becomes harmful. How you see yourself and your outside shell may not be how other people see you, however, it will create a negative change in your behaviour, which will impact on your

friendships and relationships if you let it. Our genetic origins and cultural backgrounds create differences in our shapes, sizes, colours, personalities and styles, and is what makes us so diverse and interesting. So why is one better than another? What is beautiful? Taking the focus off what we see and moving that to what we feel is the first step to changing your self-image. Feeling good about yourself comes from within, from a sense of achievement, such as being active, eating well, having fun, and being healthy. There’s nothing more beautiful than a healthy body, no matter what your shape, and a smile filled with happiness. Be proud of who you are and your uniqueness. It’s not what others think about you that matters, but how you feel about yourself. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

s we head deep into the second half of 2015 and I approach my third month being 40 years of age, I’ve been jotting down the random thoughts that enter my headspace, for fear of forgetting them. I know right, this forgetting thing is happening to me on a daily basis. At least I think it is. Anyway, as I was saying my mind is like a young Greek dude’s hotted up Nissan Skyline, it’s “fully hectic bro”. There’s way too much to think about. I went to get Subway last week and sadly, while I love a foot-long chicken fillet delight, I believe I may have dined on my last one. I can no longer handle the pressure at Subway. It’s about the questions. There’s just so many questions: What bread do I want? Which cheese do I need? All the salads sir? Is that lettuce, tomato and onion? Red onion? Would I like it toasted? How about a deliciously fresh baked cookie too? Eddie asks less questions on Millionaire Hot Seat! Please don’t think I’m having a go at the kids at Subway, they do a cracking job, they really do but let me just say this to them: YOU are a sandwich artist! It says so on your badge: Jordan, Subway sandwich artist. I hereby commission you to make my lunch any way you see fit. My

sandwich is your muse. It’s the same when you’re ordering a pizza online. Again with the questions! No thanks, I don’t want any spicy wicked wings or lava cakes or chunky cut chips or salted caramel chocolate mousse. Other things occupying my head this week – I’ve been thinking about inventing a denim couch. Yep, a denim couch. It’s for when you’re at home and you want to take off your pants and still feel like you’re wearing pants. Brilliant, I know. Lasagne. That world famous Italian dish. It’s just spaghetti cake. Think about it, you know it is. Anyone else have these thoughts swirling around the frontal lobe as you are trying to nod off? We aren’t even catching a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the stuff that occupies my thoughts and to be fair at this stage of the game, we’re all exhausted and plenty thirsty. That’s where our usually ever reliable buddies at the Matilda Bay Malt Shovel Brewery come in. Fat Yak Pale Ale has been a massive success for the Malt Shovel crew and they’ve just introduced the Yak’s new companion, an Australian Pale Ale by the name of The Lazy Yak. It’s based on an American pale style and is an easygoing beer that will please some, but certainly not all.

I reckon it’s got more of a lager type vibe than the usual pale ale style and so my first taste was not as ace as I expected. The overall taste is best described as short and bitter. It’s the Michael Pup Clarke of beers. Truth be known, the Lazy Yak is a bit like a cross between VB and Toohey’s New. Some of my mates reckon it’s tops and while I don’t totally dislike it, I certainly don’t love it the way I love the Fat. It’s not very often Matilda Bay doesn’t back a winner and as far as great beers go, this is a small speedbump for their otherwise brilliant range. I give the Matilda Bay Lazy Yak a tough but fair two out of five thumbs up.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

SMALL BUSINESS AND SUPER Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

S

mall business owners pour their heart and soul into building their business. So when it comes time to sell and retire, they want to ensure that they have been rewarded for all that hard work. The government has recognised that most small business owners often neglect their own superannuation savings in favour of building their business, which is understandable. On the successful sale of a small business, owners may be entitled to tax breaks which can reduce or eliminate the associated taxable capital gain. The complexities and the interrelationship between small business, capital gains tax and retirement have resulted in this area requiring significant planning.

Importantly, there are a number of different boxes to tick to access these concessions. In particular, you must seek advice from a tax adviser to determine your eligibility to apply for these concessions and in which order to garner the maximum benefit. Small business operators who seek advice in relation to the concessions will generally want to use the sale proceeds to fund their retirement. It is therefore important to understand how the small business capital gains tax concessions tie in with super contribution rules and caps. We have discussed non-concessional contributions and concessional contributions in the past – however we have not discussed the lifetime capital gains tax cap. It is important to understand that using the small business capital gains tax concessions may require a contribution to be made to super. You are restricted on the amount that can be contributed depending on which small business capital gains tax

concession is claimed. The lifetime capital gains tax cap allows you to contribute up to $1,395,000 (2015/16 FY). This contribution does not count towards your non-concessional or concessional contribution cap – which may allow for other generous super building strategies to be implemented, depending on age. As you can appreciate, this is a highly complex area that requires plenty of planning. It is important for small business owners to not only think about building their business, but to also ensure they have structured their affairs to potentially take advantage of these concessions. A discussion with your financial planner and accountant could prove beneficial ahead of any business sale.

FORESTER’S GREAT LEAP FORWARD Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the SUBARU FORESTER 2.0D

T

hey say good things come to those who wait. And there may be no better example of the old adage than this car – the latest version of Subaru’s much-loved Forester. After almost two decades, Subaru has finally realised something that has been blindingly obvious to the rest of us for

ages – only two things could make the little Forester better. A diesel engine, coupled to an auto transmission. And at long last it’s arrived – but boy, have we had to wait for it. Since 1997, in fact. That’s how long it has been since Subaru unveiled the first chunky little Forester – and created an overnight

legend in the process. We’ve long marvelled at the Forester’s sturdy, unbreakable quality, its surprising go-anywhere ability and, largely as a result of these two factors, the incredible loyalty it engenders from those who drive it. For most of its life, the Forester’s only engine choices were between two petrol versions – one turbo-charged and one not

– until the folk at Subaru finally added a diesel variant a couple of years back with the arrival of this current fourthgeneration edition. But for reasons best known to Subaru, it’s taken until now for that diesel engine to be available in combination with the ‘Lineartronic’ smooth-shifting auto transmission that’s been a feature across other Subaru models for a few years now. So, for those who have been waiting – and waiting – for this all-singing, alldancing Forester, I’m happy to say it’s largely been worth it. This must surely be the best Forester ever. And that’s quite a compliment. Perhaps as a means of apologising for the wait, Subaru has made this midmodel update even more appealing – by slashing prices by almost 10 per cent across the Forester range. That means that despite enjoying some upgraded equipment, including a new infotainment system, it’s $3500 cheaper than the superseded model. The Forester has long been one of our very favourite vehicles – and this new drivetrain really completes the package. Because the Forester delivers genuine off-road ability – despite its relatively unassuming, car-like appearance – the continued over>

<from previous page dirt-churning torque inherent in diesels is a great match. And this two-litre, horizontallyopposed diesel is a cracker. It’s smooth and quiet, delivers the 108 kilowatts and 350 Newton metres of torque in a very linear way, and according to the stats it requires only 6.3 litres per 100 kilometres. The auto, too, will please those who’d prefer to rest their left leg while enjoying that grunty diesel. Its torque arrives at an almost-idling 1600 revs per minute, meaning it pulls strongly from the instant you prod the throttle. Beyond the mechanicals, this latest Forester is very much as we’ve come to expect from this model – reliable, practical and a breeze to drive. The Forester was perhaps the first – or at least one of the first – true SUVs on the market; a vehicle that looked and drove like a normal wagon, but somehow managed enough off-road performance to allow it to become a go-anywhere car. Among other things, this fourthgeneration Forester gets a new X-Mode off-road system which helps centralise control of engine, braking and traction components to optimise off-road safety and capability.

Interior fit-out and safety equipment are other big improvements on the current generation – and those are enhanced in this mid-model update. There’s also Subaru’s new EyeSight frontal collision warning and avoidance system, which helps avoid low-speed crashes and an auto stop-start fuel-saving system. All models in this fourth generation cohort boast improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions – thanks in part to the CVT transmission which Subaru claims reduces thirst by 12 per cent. The latest Forester also boasts a quieter, more compliant ride. Standard kit on even the entry-level model includes seven airbags, ABS with brakeforce distribution and brake assist;

reversing camera, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control and climate control air. Mid-range models add dual-zone climate control and X-mode; while on higher-spec models you’ll also get sunroof, EyeSight system, leather trim and satellite navigation. Interior dimensions have grown with increased shoulder and elbow room, more legroom in the rear and a wider cargo area to increase cargo capacity. The diesel has been cleverly calibrated to match the inherent characteristics of the CVT transmission. The characteristic diesel torque is generally in evidence as the CVT works to prevent excessive engine revs – essentially keeping this smooth engine right in its sweet spot. Mid-range acceleration is surprisingly good. The X-Mode system operates in two ways – at low speeds it optimises the car’s traction control and hill descent control to maintain optimum grip; up to 40 kilometres per hour it controls throttle output and clutch pressure to avoid wheelspin and varies brake pressure to maximise grip on slippery surfaces. Put it all together and this latest Forester might not be quite the perfect car, although it’s close to the perfect Forester. And well worth the wait.

SUBARU FORESTER 2.0D HOW BIG? The compact Forester has grown, inside and out, in this latest generation and is now capable of accommodating a full-sized family, plus a heap of their gear in the back. HOW FAST? It might not threaten some of Subaru’s sportier models, but the Forester diesel is no slouch. It’s particularly punchy when accelerating to overtake. HOW THIRSTY? At 6.3L/100km the diesel’s consumption is good, but perhaps a little disappointing compared to some similar models. The engine’s power and smoothness help compensate, though. HOW MUCH? The diesel automatic model we tested can be had for $35,490, or about $6000 more with the higher trim level. Forester entry-level pricing has dropped to below $30,000 for the basic petrol model.

BUDERIM BEAUTY

This stylish suburb has been one of the most sought after places to live on the Sunshine Coast for 70 years. WORDS: Dorothy Whittington.

I

t’s hard to imagine that Buderim, the prized property plateau 200 metres above the nearby sea, could be anything other than a superb place to live, but its first residents preferred its cedar in the 1870s. By the turn of the century, its rich red volcanic soil was favoured for farming. Coffee, (Ernest Burnett won a London trade fair award in 1899) bananas (Joseph Foote produced the Mons Mari in 1912) and ginger (the southern hemisphere’s only ginger factory) were the most famous crops. Land values took over after the World War II and, with the subdivision of new estates capitalising on magnificent views from every angle, Buderim soon established itself as an enviable and somewhat upmarket place to live. Many of the rich and famous chose it in retirement, Queensland Governor Sir John Lavarack (1885-1957) among them, so much so that for a time it was dubbed “heaven’s waiting room” by mischievous

locals. This combination of rich soil and retirees also makes it the well-tended garden of the Sunshine Coast and a pretty place to live. There was considerable residential development during the 1960s and it never really stopped. The population doubled between 1991 and 2006 as technology made it possible to build on steep slopes and housing began to flow down the escarpment. Once just a network of residential streets spreading out from the main street which runs right along the top of the mountain, it now officially includes North Buderim, Tyrone Heights, Kuluin and Kunda Park to the north and Timberdale and Mons to the west. The Sunshine Motorway, which forms the southern border at the Bruce Highway at Tanawha, swings around past Mountain Creek in the east, to keep Rainforest Sanctuary, Ballinger Road sports complex, Buderim Glen, Buderim

Pines, Buderim Meadows and Headland Park all within the Buderim boundary. Population for Buderim’s 3977 hectares was just over 28,000 or seven people per hectare at the 2006 census, but is now more than 30,000. The Sunshine Coast Private Hospital, built as the Buderim Private Hospital in the 1980s, is on the eastern slopes and, as well as its specialty shops and urban centre on top, plenty of neighbourhood centres and services have sprung up to support an ever-growing population on the slopes.

SUMMING UP: An exclusive hilltop precinct with a choice of some of the best views on the Sunshine Coast, a Buderim address is no longer reserved for the elite. While there are still plenty of multi-million dollar homes, expansion down the escarpment has opened up more affordable options, many of them offering a green space close to beaches and the highway.

SAFE AS HOUSES The property market may receive a welcome boost with a new report showing that Australians plan to invest their tax dollars. The homeloans.com.au report shows that more than 15 per cent of those in the 18-24 demographic plan to use this year’s tax refund on a home deposit. The same number of Gen Y’s plan to use the tax man’s dollars to reduce an existing mortgage. Meanwhile, a quarter of all Australian taxpayers will also use their refund towards their mortgage. The organisation’s national marketing manager, Will Keall, says the results reflect Gen Y’s “more prudent approach to life’’.

AGENT’S TIP Darren Rix has worked with Remax in the Buderim area for eight years… HOW IS THE MARKET? The market is ticking along well. We have a good value of buyers who are still price conscious but ready to act when the right property comes up at the right price. If property is priced right it is moving fast. There has been a steady increase in sale prices in the past three years. The median is now above the $500,000 mark. All in all it’s a good healthy market.

32 My Weekly Preview | September 4, 2015

32.indd 1

ANY ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE LOOKING TO BUY OR SELL IN THE AREA? Buderim has a quiet community feeling. The average age in Buderim is 39. It has become very much a family area. Before buying, do your homework. Ask your agent for a comparative market analysis or a comparative sales report for the past three to six months.

“But that doesn’t mean they’re all work and no fun. “This is also the group that more than any other has plans to travel, with more than a third telling us that they would use their expected refunds for a holiday. “Debt reduction really stood out as a major concern among respondents, and it’s obvious that people are cautious with their money. “However, that’s not to say they also aren’t planning to treat themselves.” myweeklypreview.com.au

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So this week is looking interesting. Definitely a bump in swell but with a bit of wind attached to it. Kings Beach will be the pick as will Sunshine Beach and Double Island in the corner. Get on it while you can before the northeasters start. Once they kick in we are stuffed for a while. So enjoy. Next stop on the WSL with be Trestles in the USA. Sadly this will suit the Brazilians.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

OFFSHORE: The close in reefs off Currimundi and Caloundra have been returning Maori cod, parrot and sweetlip at dawn and dusk with fish fillet and squid returning the most. The Barwon Banks will provide a feed of pearl perch and snapper. You can get spanner crabs east of Coolum. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is still returning bass on trolled deep divers with plenty of spangled perch for the kids. Lake Macdonald, near Cooroy is still fishing well for bass and golden perch, but as this is only a small impoundment practice catch and release so everyone can enjoy catching plenty of fish. The best lure colours seem to be red and black at the moment.

Over seven levels, with only two apartments on each level and no adjoining walls, privacy is paramount; this brand new boutique development only has 14 apartments in total, enhancing exclusivity, tranquility and future desirability.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Thank goodness Venus is now direct, which favours family relationships and financial matters. You’re also feeling super generous, and are ready to lend a helping hand to someone who’s in need of your practical approach and compassionate care.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] This week’s stars suit reading, writing, public speaking, social networking, short trips, friendships and having fun. On Wednesday and Thursday it’s time to slow down, concentrate, focus on the facts, and do the research that’s required. Skip over minor details at your peril.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Money gets back on track, as Venus powers through your finance zone. But a loved one or colleague may criticise your efforts. Your crab claws are out and you’re ready to retaliate but the solar eclipse is in Virgo, so be discreet and demure.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Have you been wasting your talents? This week the planets (principally Mars and Uranus) urge you to live in the realm of proactive possibility. Which means you must visualise your preferred fabulous future – and then do all you can to make it happen.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Many Virgos are fabulous with facts, and finicky minor details – which means you are the one to call if people want a job done properly and on time. But, if you overdo your perfectionist streak then it will be a long and exhausting week. Try to relax, and resist the urge to criticise.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Your communication skills are firing, as you bring someone around to your point of view with a convincing argument. But don’t be deceived by glossy appearances. You can be dazzled by outer beauty but you need to look beneath to evaluate a person’s true worth.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Expect intense encounters with others, as Pluto brings jealous behaviour to the surface. You’re feeling vulnerable and emotionally raw but, if you’re a sulky Scorpio, then it will just drive others away. Aim to be passionately involved – but still maintain a sense of perspective.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Relations with children, teenagers, friends or overseas contacts will be lively – and unpredictable. When it comes to an exciting project at school, college, university or work, strive to strike a happy medium between being spontaneous and being slapdash.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Expect the unexpected, as emotions are unusually erratic. Pluto increases compulsions so you’ll experience some intense communication – in person and online. Don’t push yourself too hard, and avoid antagonising others. Keep a cool head on your sensible shoulders!

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The Mars/Uranus trine shakes up your crazy streak, and you run wild! But stirring others up will get you nowhere fast. You’re ready to take some exciting risks, so strive to make smart snap decisions (rather than ridiculously reckless ones that you later regret).

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] We all know you’re fabulously creative but have you got a serious plan for the future? It’s a good week to take a long look at your goals and dreams, plus get cracking on practical projects that point you in a positive new direction. No procrastinating Pisces!

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The Mars/Uranus trine boosts your independent streak and fires up your desire for freedom and adventure. But it also stirs up your brusque and bossy side, so strive to be a diplomatic daredevil! Pay close attention to your health and fitness on the weekend.

THE LAST WORD

STRAIGHT FROM THE ART Four-year-olds make the most unpretentious art critics, writes Richard O’Leary.

“I

think it looks like hair under water” is how my four-year-old described Dwelling Deeply, Kym Barrett’s striking entry in this year’s tenth anniversary Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2D Award. The artist says the painting “speaks quietly but with moments of intensity”. Which also happens to describe what it was like to take my son around the Caloundra Regional Gallery to see the works of the 40 finalists. On our tour on a sunny Saturday morning, my youngest boy provided a helpful précis on just about every painting. Cheryl Harrison’s high vis mixed media entry was described as “looking like a lemon”, the portrait of Jimmy Hendrix by Shelly Cornish was a “woman with long fingernails”, while Andrew Clarke’s moody painting The

he chose Samantha Everton’s dreamlike Santima, which shows a woman dressed in gold falling through a red sky. “That’s my favourite. It reminds me of Thailand.” Which may please the artist as the work is part of series inspired by the Thai folk tale Sang Tong (The Boy with the Golden Shell). But of course, my son’s opinion is not what is important (except to me). It’s the fact he, and anybody else on the Sunshine Coast, is able to visit such a high quality exhibition just a short drive from home – see it, touch it (sorry, he is only four) talk about it, be inspired by it. The winner of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2D Award is announced tonight (September 4). Good luck to all the finalists.

Hairdressing Ceremony caused confusion: “Why aren’t there any scissors?” He had no such doubts about Jamie Rochester’s We Made Eye Contact for a Split Second, an intricate portrait created by cutting a single sheet of black paper using only a scalpel and placing it on a white background – “Look at the shadows” my son said, and that was one of the most striking parts of the piece – the picture behind the picture. My youngster and artist Paul Ryan were both decidedly droll about Fieldsy, Green Jacket which shows a dishevelled man in an antique military uniform with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. Ryan in his spiel says, “I don’t make statements, I make paintings”, while my young bloke simply said, “That man looks like he is smoking.” As for my son’s pick for the award,
