QUICK CHAT
HOLDEN MAN KEEPS HOLDING ON
Independent member for Nicklin and Queensland Parliament Speaker Peter Wellington is a homebody with an iconic car collection. FIRST JOB?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
I left home as a police cadet.
I went to primary school at Kenilworth, high school at Cooroy, was raised on the farm where my parents still live and my wife and I purchased the adjoining farm where we now live.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . I’ve got a wife, three stepdaughters, grandchildren, and my parents are still alive, and they live on the farm beside me.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
FIRST CAR? An EK Holden and I’ve still got it. I then got an EH Holden and I’ve still got that. And I bought an FC Holden and I’ve still got that. And I bought an Austin A40 and I’ve still got that.
Our farm. The hinterland between Kenilworth and Eumundi.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? This is my home.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
The best day in my life? Dear, I’ve had a few. First one was when I got sworn in as a policeman. The next time was when I graduated as a solicitor, because I always thought, is it ever possible? The next one when I married my wife, and then when we got elected. Because without my wife I wouldn’t be here.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? NRL. I like the Broncos. Wayne Bennett, when I was a police cadet, he was our instructor at the police academy many years ago. So I’ve always followed him.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? You’ve got two ears and one mouth, use them in that ratio.
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE? I could have it black, white, with sugar, without, I’m easy. I don’t have a preference.
FAVOURITE BOOK? Well I think my favourite book is the Standing Rules and Orders of the Legislative Assembly.
Sometimes we go for a drive. Might go down the Mary Valley. Maybe through to Montville through the Range. Depending upon what we’re looking for, or we may go down to Coolum or the coast.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Oh, I had a pretty bad accident on the farm, made me look at what’s really important in life. Up until then it was rush, rush, rush. You know you’ve got all these things you want to do in one day and you can’t get through them all. The community was wonderful the way they supported me.
FAVOURITE SONG?
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
I like the Seekers, Nana Mouskouri. I suppose that’s where I’m at.
When I’m home with my wife and we’re working with the cows. We love our quiet time.

CHANGING THE ODDS
When it comes to diagnosing breast cancer, every day counts – when was your last breast check? WORDS: Candice Holznagel

even Australian women will die of breast cancer today, tomorrow, and the day after that. The statistics are confronting and unnerving – this year more than 3000 women are expected to lose their battle with the disease while 15,600 women will be diagnosed. One in eight women will battle breast cancer in their lifetime, which makes the disease one of the most diagnosed cancers in females in our country. But, what if we began to look at these statistics not in fear, but as motivation to raise awareness and find a cure. After all, cancer is a word. Not a sentence. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) has a goal of reaching zero deaths from breast cancer within 15 years. It’s a goal which is attainable says one leading Sunshine Coast medical oncologist, whose identity can’t be

revealed due to professional guidelines. “I have more of an expectation than a hope that cancer will turn into a chronic disease hopefully in my lifetime,’’ he says. “And it will be something that’s controllable, like diabetes. “People will go from being diagnosed and go on to treatment and be able to live with cancer for hopefully an extended period of time.” These expectations keep survivors, like Sunshine Coast woman Di Olson, fighting the battle. The women who endure diagnosis, surgery, chemotherapy treatment, hair loss, sickness, depression and fear are survivors in every sense of the word. “It took me a long time to be able to say I was a cancer patient,’’ Olson admits. “Then, for a long time, I was only that: a cancer patient, struggling to figure out who I am.” It has been a little over a year since 52-year-old Olson was diagnosed with an aggressive (grade 3) fast-growing tumour.
“But through all of these challenges, and all these doubts, I can comfort myself with this thought: I am here’’
The 12 months have been traumatic. She underwent surgery to have the 1.6-centimetre lump removed and was thrown into a whirlwind treatment plan. A port-a-cath was inserted into her chest wall so she could undergo six months of intravenous chemotherapy and 18 treatments of the breakthrough drug Herceptin. There was also ovarian removal surgery, a double mastectomy, reconstruction and two emergency hospital visits where her family stood by watching their beloved wife and mother fight for her life. “I could go on for days with the nitty-gritty details of the hair loss, side effects and emotions,’’ Olson says. But her real motivation for speaking out now – to coincide with breast cancer month – is to spread the message of early detection. She is a firm believer that it is the combination of mammogram and ultrasound that will save lives. “Since I was 40, I have had regular
mammograms due to dense lumpy DD breasts. “Turning 50 my doctor advised me to have a combined ultrasound and mammogram just to be reassured. “After four fine needle aspirations and an MRI scan I was given the all clear and told to come back in 12 months for a regular check. “When I had my next tests my mammogram was clear but the ultrasound picked up the lump. This was aspirated and found to be cancer. “My advice now is to always have an ultrasound, do not rely on just a mammogram alone.’’ Currently Breastscreen Queensland offers a free mammogram service to women aged 40 and over, with a strong emphasis on the 50-plus age group. McGrath Foundation breast care nurse Cathy Apelt says the most common diagnosis occurs around the age of 60, however people in their early 30s and late 90s can still develop the disease. CHECK YOUR BUMPS FOR LUMPS

therapies, treatments given early after surgery increase cure rates. “Therapy at the moment is changing and will change more and more in the future as we get more specific targeted therapies. “Molecular biologists work out all the various gene mutations… and come up with more specific inhibitors of the process.’’ The most recent groundbreaking treatment to come out of research facilities is the drug Herceptin. Herceptin is used on patients who have HER2-positive breast cancer – about 25 per cent of cases. “It is used exclusively in that small cohort and in those people it has been very effective compared to other forms of therapy,’’ the oncologist adds. “It has been a great boon.’’ Olson, who falls into the HER2 category, says Herceptin has increased her survival rate from about 60 per cent to 90 per cent. “That’s what research can do. It can turn a seemingly hopeless situation into one of hope,’’ she says. “And I can tell you, sometimes hope is all you have.”
This is why Olson is pouring all of her energy into fundraising for vital research. Together with fellow cancer survivor Susan Hirst and friends Liz Ward and Sandra Reardon, she is taking on the Step Towards A Cure – Great Wall Trek 2016. The women will trek the Chinese wall across five days in May to raise money for the NBCF. Olson says her own battle with breast cancer has taught her the value of research and the need to raise funds for it. “On paper, I am better. I no longer have cancer and with every passing day I’m getting stronger. “I am surrounded by the world’s best army, being my supportive family and friends and a brilliant medical team who worked tirelessly to keep me alive. “You are continuously wondering: What happens if the cancer comes back? Will I ever feel normal again? And most daunting of all, how do I move forward with my life? “But through all of these challenges, and all these doubts, I can comfort myself with this thought: I am here.’’
“Know your body, be an advocate and go see your GP”
What should I look out for? • A lump, lumpiness or thickening of the breast. • A change in shape, crusting, a sore or ulcer, redness or inversion of the nipple. • Discharge from the nipple that is bloodstained, clear or occurs without squeezing. • Changes in the skin of the breast, such as any puckering or dimpling of the skin, unusual redness or other colour change. • Changes in the size or shape of the breast. This might be either an increase in size or a decrease in size. • Unusual and persistent pain that is not related to the normal monthly cycle and occurs only in one breast.
MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you’d like to assist in raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Trek for a Cure there are a number of ways you can help. Sunshine Coast charity Wishlist will fund a record 16 research projects to the tune of more than $225,000. Launched in 2009, the grants program offers assistance throughout the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service. CEO Lisa Rowe says the quality of research helps encourage a level of expertise that will attract world-class specialists to the region’s health services. The latest recipients will be announced next month.
BYO WATER BOTTLES Thousands will attend this weekend’s Caloundra Music Festival and yet there won’t be a disposable water bottle in site. The festival is continuing its campaign to eliminate disposable bottles and in the past two years, about 60,000 have been kept out of landfill. People are encouraged to take re-usable bottles and refill them on site. Councillor Tim Dwyer says the council is rolling out other green initiatives, including signs made from recycled materials.
REVIEW HOLE IN ONE
A groundbreaking new facility has opened at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The $37.2 million purpose-built facility is one of only four in the world with the CAVE2 – a massive, 320-degree immersive environment that combines visualisation techniques with three-dimensional and virtual reality technology. USC is the first in the world to use the technology for teaching and learning, rather than solely for research. “Visualisation using 3D and virtual reality allows students to see and interact with complex data in more easily understood ways, reinforcing powerful learning,’’ USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill says.
Three hundred holiday makers were forced to evacuate a popular campsite Inskip Point at the weekend following the formation of a massive sink hole. The sinkhole has swallowed 200 metres of beachfront land and about 50 metres of the campground, taking with it a caravan, camper trailer and tent. No one was injured. Engineers are assessing the area through the use of a ground-penetrating radar.

PEDAL FOR A CAUSE
Greg and Josh Paix 2013
S
unshine Coast Cycling Club vice president Greg Paix knows that community generosity is important. Without it, organisations such as the Cerebral Palsy League would not be able to survive. This is why Paix, whose son Josh has cerebral palsy, is a passionate supporter of the Buderim 9 Challenge. “I live and breathe the Buderim 9 Challenge for all that it offers its participants, supporters and recipients,’’ he says.
Paix is urging cyclists to nominate for the December 20 event to raise awareness and funds for the League. More than 300 people have committed to breaking out the lycra and competing in the fourth annual event, which involves cycling up nine of Buderim’s toughest hills and tackling 75 kilometres in three hours. Cerebral Palsy League Sunshine Coast manager Carmel Smith says last year’s event raised more than $200,000. “We are so grateful for the efforts and generosity of all those who continue to help make this event such an extraordinary success,’’ she says. Buderim 9 ambassadors, Paralympian Chris Scott and Australian junior cycling champ Dan Fitter, are calling on the community to get behind the event. “Set yourself the target for your name to appear on the prestigious perpetual trophy as the highest fundraiser of the 2015 Buderim 9 Challenge,’’ Fitter says. Event and trophy sponsor Argon Law has supported the event for the four years. Registration for the event closes on December 14. For more information visit buderim9.com.au.

state planning is an important part of the financial planning process. One of many steps involved in the estate planning process is identifying which of your assets may or may not form part of your estate. Interestingly, your superannuation savings do not automatically form part of your estate assets. The trustee of your superannuation savings will make a final decision on who to pay your superannuation savings to and how it should be paid. This is why it is important to ensure you have lodged a valid binding death benefit nomination with the trustee of your super fund. Where you have lodged a valid binding death benefit nomination with the trustee of your super fund, the trustee is then obligated to pay your superannuation savings to the nominated beneficiary or to your estate.
It is worth noting that superannuation legislation limits your nomination to five types of beneficiaries: a spouse, children, a person who was in an interdependency relationship with the member at the time of death, a person who was financially dependent on the deceased and the fifth beneficiary is the member’s estate. Due consideration must be given to the tax implications of leaving your superannuation savings to certain beneficiaries. Engaging with your adviser and an estate planning specialist should provide you with peace of mind that your chosen beneficiaries receive the maximum benefit. If you are unsure of where your superannuation savings may go we highly recommend that you call your superannuation provider and enquire. Your Environment Levy in action for 2014-2015 The Sunshine Coast is without question a unique and special place and our region’s natural advantage is clear for anyone to see. The Sunshine Coast Council delivers one of the most successful and progressive environmental programs administered by any local government in Australia. 2014-15 has proven to be another year of action for Council’s Environment Levy Program. Ongoing investments have been made into the management of our waterways and coastal foreshores and maintaining our diversity of native vegetation and animals. The $60 contribution each ratepayer makes to the Environment Levy enables Council to invest in projects that wouldn’t otherwise be possible. I am very proud of the achievements made in 2014-15 and look forward to Council’s ongoing partnership with the community as we continue on our journey to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse. Cr Mark Jamieson Mayor
Engaging and supporting the Sunshine Coast community In 2014/15 the Environment Levy funded 24 community groups, 118 private landowners, supported an army of conservation volunteers and continued to create opportunities for the younger generation to be inspired through ‘Kids in Action’.
21.indd 1
Conservation Volunteering In 2014/15, a total of 659 active community volunteers, 40 community groups and eight beach groups contributed to environmental conservation and restoration, marine turtle protection and support for our Environmental Visitor Education Centres. TRAVEL < De Ferrari square in Genoa, the heart of the city with the central fountain and the Liberty architecture of the Stock Exchange palace
NOT ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME Genoa is an Italian gem rich in history and culture set on the Mediterranean Sea. WORDS: Gabrielle Fagan
I
’m lost in Genoa, wandering through an intriguing labyrinth of ancient cobblestone alleyways, so narrow no sunlight can penetrate. Adding to my happy confusion is the feeling that I’ve stepped back in time and, in a way, I have. These lanes, known as the caruggi, claim to be the birthplace of Christopher Columbus – the city’s most famous son, and are part of Europe’s largest medieval town. This UNESCO world heritage site, tucked behind a bustling modern port, is redolent with history and atmosphere, and just one of the gems in a fascinating destination all too often overlooked in favour of Italy’s big hitters, Rome, Florence and Venice. Autumn’s an ideal time to visit because cruise crowds have, in the main, evaporated and it’s possible to relax and really appreciate a place Charles Dickens, who spent a year living here,
aptly described as a “beautiful confusion” with so much crammed into a thin snaking 30-kilometre strip of land, squashed between hills and the Mediterranean Sea. One of the shopkeepers in the old town, who comes to my rescue with directions, sums up the essence of this capital of the beautiful Liguria region (around 100 miles north east of the French border). “Getting lost in Genoa is easy but is surely one of the city’s pleasures, because you never know what you’ll find; there are surprises around every corner,” says Alessandro Boccardo, the smiling owner of a chocolate shop founded in 1866, which still has the original 19th century machines used to toast cocoa beans. His store, Romeo Viganotti (on Vico dei Castagna), is just one of 36 artisan shops housed in centuries-old buildings,
some still boasting pillars, statues and frescoes from grander days. Here, traditional practices, including tripe making, have been carried on for generations. Tripe? Yes, surprisingly this is a favourite snack for school children who scurry past holding cardboard cones filled with the stuff, an alternative to their other treat, focaccia, the delicious local flatbread. While the Centro Storico district is charming, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the spectacular Rolli Palaces on the Via Garibaldi, dubbed ‘the street of kings’ – each one more lavish than the last. Three virtually combine to become one huge museum and have stunning frescoes and artworks by artists such as Caravaggio, Rubens, Titian, van Dyck, Gauguin and Veronese. An exhibition, From The Impressionists To Picasso, is the main draw at the Palazzo Ducale from September 25 to April 10, and will feature works by Monet, Degas and van Gogh. Lack of space made the Genoese resourceful. To give an impression of majesty and status, they skilfully employed trompe l’oeil painting techniques, and fascias of many buildings are embellished with ‘faux’ marble pillars, porticos and arches, giving them an elegant theatrical character. Despite a reverence for the past, this is still very much an authentic working city, where port workers mingle with bankers and tourists. To get my bearings, I take a bird’seye view. The city was built in steep tiers like a wedding cake, but I avoid an exhausting climb by using the Art Nouveau lift at Piazza del Portello, up to Spianata Castelletto. I enjoy a vista stretching from the mountains to the Mediterranean. * Gabrielle Fagan was a guest of the Genoa tourist board. – AAP

STAYING THERE Melia Genova – For a tranquil retreat in a central location, the Melia hotel, on quiet tree-lined Via Corsica, is an excellent choice and close to landmarks such as the medieval gates and the city’s cathedral of San Lorenzo. The building’s imposing art deco exterior was originally designed in 1929, but the interior and facilities are impressively modern. The spa, with pool, gym, Turkish bath and hydro-massage tub, is a soothing haven after a long day’s sightseeing, and the Blue restaurant has a great choice of international cuisine and Ligurian dishes.
PLAYING THERE Head to Nervi and walk down one of Italy’s most beautiful promenades. The Passeggiata Anita Garibaldi winds its way for two kilometres along cliffs and offers stunning coastal views. This easterly suburb also has the city’s finest park, where three fine museums are sited. Experience life in the world’s oceans by visiting Genoa Aquarium, one of the largest indoor aquariums in Europe, designed by Renzo Piano, an architect responsible for Paris’ Pompidou centre.
EATING THERE I Tre Merli – The old port, or Porto Antico, has been revitalised with a marina, palm trees and plenty of good restaurants. One of the best places for lunch is the I Tre Merli (The Three Blackbirds). Food is prepared on a traditional wood stove and served on a terrace overlooking the water. La Casa dei Capitani – Find excellent food, atmosphere and service at this charming restaurant in a pink two-storey house with a terrace overlooking the sea in Quinto. Fresh fish is a speciality, and a bouillabaisse-style dish with mussels, calamari and shrimps costs $30.

MY OPINION
EYES ON THE PRIZE
Nathan ‘Nugget’ Dell sets the stage for this weekend’s double barrel festival of the boot with some handy tips on how to conduct yourself if you want to be invited back to your mate’s place to watch the grand final next year.
W
ell, the big weekend is finally upon us, a gem as rare as an Australian Prime Minister with the full support of their cabinet. A weekend where the AFL and NRL grand finals coincide. Yet while it seems enormously appealing, like a street kebab at 2.30 in the morning, it can be riddled with danger and pitfalls, like a street kebab at 2.30 in the morning. Fear not, as always, your good friend Nugget is here to guide you through the veritable social and sporting minefield that such an auspicious occasion presents.
WHERE TO GO? If you are thinking of heading out for either or both deciders, review your invitations carefully. DON’T: End up at a mate’s house where the biggest game of the year is being watched on a 32-centimetre black and white TV and where you have to keep the noise down so as to not to interrupt your mate’s wife, who is hosting her annual Doulas Without Deodorant meeting. DO: Find the invite that boasts the biggest screen possible. Once there, be sure to complement your host on his purchase of a TV bigger than the door the redheaded girl floated on at the end of Titanic. Chances are it cost him thousands of dollars as well as his girlfriend and his spotless credit rating.
WHAT DO I BRING?
performance was terrible, I can’t believe how much weight (insert sweaty over the hill singer) has put on.”
Bringing nothing, or an inappropriate dish, can mean instant entry to the social Faux Pas Hall of Fame, so tread lightly.
WHAT IF MY TEAM LOSES? Any fair dinkum fan is a maelstrom of emotions when their team makes it to the big dance, however all great contests, from WWII to the monthly Liberal Party leadership spill, need a loser and if your boys are on that side of the ledger, it can be tricky.
DON’T: You may love your mum’s homemade dip consisting of tuna, anchovy paste, crumbled up Jatz crackers and cocktail onions, casually titled Neptune’s Mistake, but the other people at the party will not. One whiff of this beauty and the whole joint will be tearing up like Mitchell Pearce after another Origin loss. DO: Why do we love Sam Thaiday? Because he is an out and out crowdpleaser. You know what you are going to get from big Sammy every time he laces up. Take this approach to snack preparation – one word people, guacamole. Guacamole actually translates in Spanish as: ‘God damn that green gear is delicious and I must have more now’. It’s a beautiful language.
WHAT DO I SAY? Unfortunately, not all of us have the charm of a reincarnated Oscar Wilde when it’s comes to stimulating social conversation. Getting this right can be the difference between getting voted Man of the Party and only ever being invited back for crap events like women’s tennis or The Bachelorette finale. DON’T: Please avoid the temptation to shoehorn your non-sporting interests into the conversation. If someone
Don’t get a big hit by Matt Scott mixed up with a big hit on Broadway if you want to retain any footy cred. comments on a monster hit that Matt Scott just doled out to some poor victim, don’t try to seamlessly segue your boring garbage into the party by saying, “You know what was a big hit? CATS”. DO: Fake it, till you make it. If you have no idea about the game but still desperately want to be part of it, here’s a couple of choice phrases that will work every time. “Has this been the worst year ever for refereeing/umpiring?” “Yeah you are right, every team, needs an (insert player name here), he’s just such a hard worker and never gets any of the credit that he deserves.” “Gee that pre-game
DON’T: A grand final defeat is heartbreaking. This heartbreak does not however, give you licence to kick your host’s TV, couch or pet. Storming out of the house amid a flurry of racist, sexist and oddly specific biological rantings about the opposition and your host is not cool man, ever. DO: Take the loss gracefully, congratulate the winning members of the party and leave the event with your head held high, your dignity intact and the host’s Blu-ray player under your arm. I mean, you don’t want the night to be a complete write-off, do you? So there is it, your foolproof guide to grand final day success. For the record, I think the big winner will be Channel 9 and their ability to play an ad between each tackle. Brilliant.
You can hear Nugget on Zinc 96.1.

QUEEN OF QUEENSLAND CULTURE Sallyanne Atkinson has some words of advice for the women of the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
S
allyanne Atkinson knows all about the c challenges working w women face today. Ju don’t tell her Just h much you how h have to cope with. d ’t like lik the th word d ‘coping’,” ‘ i ’ ” says the former Lord “I don’t Mayor of Brisbane. “The word coping makes us sound like victims. “There is a tendency for women to make apologies just for being there. ‘Coping’ seems to imply there’s a problem. Yes, there’s a problem, but one of the things I’ve learnt in my long working life is that there’s no use saying, oh dear, this is an obstacle. We have to find solutions.” This can-do attitude is the hallmark of Atkinson’s long and esteemed career. The first and only female Lord Mayor of Brisbane (1985 to 1991) she is credited with helping transform Brisbane into the urban village it is today. At a time when Brisbane was seen as a cultural backwater, her bid for the 1992 Olympics and the success of Expo ‘88 made her a national celebrity. She went on to become Senior Trade Commissioner to France, Chair of Queensland Tourism and Special Representative for Queensland in South East Asia. At 73, she’s not slowing down. She is Chairman of the Museum
of Brisbane and the Queensland Brain Institute and current President of the Council of The Womens’ College at the University of Queensland, as well as a corporate advisor and business mentor. On October 13, she’ll share the secrets of her success when she is guest speaker at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network breakfast. One piece of advice she’ll give is to be realistic about how much can be achieved in a day. “I’m always giving my daughters this advice – they don’t always take it – you can’t do it all. Work out what you’re good at and do it. What you’re not good at, don’t do it or get somebody else to do it. “I’m a great adjuster and adapater. I’ve never really fought circumstances; I’ve usually gone around them. For example, I discovered early in my married life I wasn’t good at housework and I don’t like cooking, so I decided I’d get somebody else to do that and I’d go and work.” There were times when she felt overwhelmed, particularly when she had three children under the age of three, but learnt resilience from her father. Born in Sydney, she grew up in Sri Lanka, where her father worked as an accountant. When he lost his job, she watched him pick himself up and dust himself off, moving the family back to Australia when she was 14 to start over. Atkinson grew up in a family of girls and went to an all-girls school and it wasn’t until she entered the workforce as a journalist in the early 1960s that she
realised there were things women weren’t supposed to do. “I started work on the [Brisbane] Telegraph and I could only cover nice social stories.” From there she went into local politics, but says she never intended to follow the career path she did. “I was going to be a teacher,” she says, adding she would love to teach English and history, her two favourite subjects at school. If there’s something she’d like to impress on Sunshine Coast women, it’s to stay open to new opportunities. “You can’t plan too far ahead,” she says. “A lot of people make the mistake of having their whole careers mapped out ahead of them. If you do that you miss out on a lot of opportunities that pop up from time to time. “You have to regard every single stage of your life as a learning experience. Young people I talk to spend time worrying about their next job. I say do this job very well and then the next job will come after that.” Atkinson owned a house at Buderim for seven years and planned to live here, but says the commute to Brisbane put her off. She now lives at Southbank and looks at the Expo 88 site every day with a sense of pride. But while her time as Lord Mayor of Brisbane is her career highlight, it’s not the highlight of her life. “I know this sounds terribly corny but my children are my highlights. Five children, 14 grandchildren and they’re all extremely nice people. That to me gives me the greatest satisfaction.”

o you ever feel as though you’re in the wrong place, in the wrong job, or with the wrong people? Are you following your dreams? Or someone else’s? Are you in a friendship or relationship that feels as though you’re not being your true self? Sometimes we follow a path that isn’t our path, whether we do it to help another person, or to take an opportunity that sounds good at the time, and it leads to doing something that’s not who we truly are. Long-term, not being in your ‘flow’ for who you are can create a level of stress leading to feelings of depression, sadness, anxiety, anger or confusion. Sometimes we look at the people in our lives and struggle to create harmonious relationships because we are not really happy within ourselves, and then wonder what went wrong. Your body will respond to this stress
physically, increasing your stress hormones, reducing your sleep quality, causing fatigue. Long-term stress and poor sleep causes fluid retention, weight gain, hormonal imbalances, poor memory and mood disturbances, leading to cardiovascular disease and inflammatory diseases. Overall, feeling very unwell, and very unhappy. What makes you happy, what can you change? There’s always a way to make the changes you need to make things better. Find out who you are by doing more of the things you love, and reducing stress. Get balance back in your life, then take the steps to regain your health. You deserve to love your life, so love yourself, and get your flow back. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

MY TIME
TODD’S GROG
WHAT’S ON
Todd Widdicombe is gearing up for grand final weekend.
I
n the words of the legendary Strayan sports commentary duo Rampaging Roy Slaven and HG Nelson, this weekend is a mighty return to the “Festival of the Boot”. A weekend chockablock full of grunt and poke and not a pillow in sight. With both the AFL and NRL grand finals happening Saturday and Sunday respectively and with both my teams, the Eagles and the Cowboys having a crack at victory in both codes, I’m as happy as a man who thought he’d just found a cat poo on his pie, only to discover it was in fact an extra large blackberry. This is simply put, the greatest weekend. Really, it’s like Christmas Day for sports fans and we come from far and wide to worship at the altar of the gods of footy. Of course, this fine environment is the ideal breeding ground for the footy comedian. Every fan has a small repertoire
of sports comedy gold that gets rolled out for the big games. Those fully loaded sledges you direct towards the screen, safe in the knowledge the players can’t hear you. I know I’m a bandit for it. There’s nothing finer than whipping out a witty comment or two in a quiet moment that’s guaranteed to have other footy fans giggling into the French onion dip. My most frequently used: Go on (insert player name) pass it to your mum, she’s loose. Oh c’mon ump/ref, why don’t you slip into something more comfortable, like a coma. Quick somebody call triple 0, there’s a whole team choking out there. He’ll never be the man his mother was. How’s that guy’s head? It looks like it caught on fire and someone tried to put it out with a fork. Yep friends, pure champagne comedy

I know. Feel free to take them for a spin this weekend. Of course you’ll need a cold one to wash down your witty commentary. This week it’s a cheeky little number from the good people at Hahn. The Hahn Radler is the first release from the new Hahn Brewers’ Projects. It’s a full traditional European radler style beer tweaked for Aussie consumption and is 70 per cent beer and 30 per cent natural lemon. Unlike the great Jonathan Thurston this brew won’t win any medals, but it will be hotter than a stolen Commodore this summer. It’s light and refreshing, easy to drink, making it a perfect match for Sunday breakfast just before church. While it’s not really my bag, the Radler will appeal to ginger beer and cider drinkers I reckon. If you’re driving this weekend but wanna have a couple of quieties watching the footy, then this thirst quenching mid-strength could be a goer. I give the new Hahn Radler 3 out of 5 thumbs up. SMART INVESTMENT
Investment in property can be a smart choice, but you need to do your homework.
T
here are more than one million property investors in Australia and with many benefits to purchasing a second property it’s clear why it has become a popular method of investing. The Sunshine Coast with its beautiful beaches, booming tourism industry and population growth is a smart choice when it comes to investing. However, property purchase is not a decision to make lightly and there are a number of things you should consider before signing on the dotted line…
RESEARCH Research is a key factor in purchasing any property. Your first step should be investigating potential growth areas, including research into future development plans. From there you can identify the market and demographics a particular area will appeal to. The Real Estate Institute of Queensland advises that it’s also important to not only consider the purchase price of a property, but
research the ongoing expenditures such as maintenance and property management fees.
CONSIDERATION
RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Careful consideration should be given into what type of property you want to purchase – a townhouse, unit or house. When buying a townhouse it’s important to keep body corporate fees in mind as they can range anywhere from $3000 and upward to $11,000. Property purchase aside, there are important financial considerations as well. Speak with your bank or mortgage broker to determine the right type of mortgage to suit you.
One of the benefits of property investment is of course financial gain. In providing information on investments, Westpac Bank says that benefits can include generating capital growth, generating rental income and yield and gaining tax advantages linked to negative gearing. “With negative gearing you can deduct the costs of owning your investment property from your overall income, reducing your tax bill,’’ Westpac advises.
The Real Estate Institute of Queensland advises investors to think like a future tenant would. “In property investment, always keep an open mind and carefully weigh in all factors that may be attractive or offputting to tenants,’’ the REIQ reports. Take into account the property’s location to public transport, schools and shopping centres as these things are appealing to tenants.
LEAVE EMOTION AT THE DOOR When buying property it’s easy to get caught up in your emotions. But, investment is different to purchasing the family home. You need to base decisions on practical considerations. Think of it as a business decision.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Well hopefully last weekend you scored a few cheeky waves as there were a few on offer. While up here we had some fun, above average waves our counterparts at Byron and Lennox Heads were getting onshore, small, cold and rainy conditions – with a splash of a few great whites. It’s very rare we have a win over Northern NSW but when we do we must grab it – suckers! I had a friend drive three hours back to surf Moffats. Why we are not getting heaps of howling NE winds? These weather patterns are just plain strange. I guess grab the waves while you can.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Flathead are taking lures that stir up the bottom with gold lures and jigged plastics getting the best results. Quality whiting are working over the flats at Bli Bli. You can get school jew in the Cod Hole at night using live bait. You’ll find bream and trevally along the deep bank at Channel Island. SURF: Big dart are right along the beach from Peregian to Kawana with pippies the best bait. There are a few tailor and bream at Pincushion with dawn and dusk the best, using baby blue pilchards. Sand whiting are in the gutter into Maroochy North Shore. OFFSHORE: Coolum is returning mixed reef fish just on dusk with squid the best bait. A few mackerel are showing up on pillies fished quite deep. You can get Kingies at The Blinker using jigged lures and livies. You can find spanner crabs north of The Gneerings in about 35 meters. Snapper are out on the Barwon Banks. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is returning jew, golden perch and bass on earthworms and deep diving lures with the rocks in front of Kirkleigh as good a spot as any. Borumba is very clear at present with bright deep diving lures returning bass along the weed line from the paddock to the rock pile. Lake Macdonald is the best for bass and Mary River cod on floated shrimps. Don’t forget your freshwater fishing license.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Spending time with children, work colleagues or friends is highlighted, but expect some confusing misunderstandings along the way. There’s also a hint of magic and mystery in the air, so make sure you stretch yourself in creative new directions.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] If you expect professional projects and domestic matters to proceed at a cracking pace then you’ll be disappointed (especially mid-week). Everything will take much longer than expected … with plenty of frustrations along the way.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] This week favours communicating with others in creative ways. … as long as you communicate clearly and concisely. If you don’t, then expect cross words, crossed wires and confusing mix-ups. And don’t be too black and white about relationships!
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] There’s the potential for power struggles, especially with work colleagues. You’ll find the more demanding your behaviour, the more difficult Tuesday and Wednesday will be. On the financial front be careful, as you’re inclined to make extravagant purchases.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] By the end of the week the moon, Venus, Mars and Jupiter will be visiting your sign. Which is great for all the Virgo-esque things you love to do. But don’t get so caught up in the detailed minutiae of daily life that you forget to savour each step and have fun along the way.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Have you been feeling tongue-tied? With Mercury reversing through your sign it’s been difficult to communicate, especially with loved ones. Your ability to express what’s on your mind gradually returns, as Mercury moves forwards in your sign on Saturday.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The sun links up with Pluto on Tuesday/Wednesday, which encourages your Scorpio temperamental streak and control-freak tendencies. You’ll find the more stubborn you are, the more challenging the week will be. Compulsive thinking is also a danger.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Early in the week there’s a very fine line between illusion and delusion (especially involving your job or home life) so be careful. Use your active imagination in positive, productive ways – and don’t believe everything you hear.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Being a bossy, controlling Capricorn will get you nowhere fast this week. In order for your close relationships to blossom, you need to give loved ones plenty of personal space and room to shine. You’ll find praising others is also much more productive than criticism.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Avoid making important money moves on Wednesday, when Mars and Neptune scramble your financial antennae. Joint finances will be especially confusing so leave discussions about fiscal matters for a more suitable time. On the weekend, romance is highlighted.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Sensitive Pisceans often suffer from a lack of self-confidence. With Saturn visiting your public zone, it’s time to worry less about the way people perceive you. Learn to appreciate your innate strengths, and then you can take your rightful place in the world around you.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Don’t get so caught up with the busyness of daily life [and the plethora of routine chores] that you lose sight of the big picture. By all means tackle the to-do list, but Jupiter urges you to expand your perspective; while Venus encourages you to smell the roses along the way.

THE LAST WORD
CREDLIN REMAINS INCREDULOUS The best thing Peta Credlin could have done for her boss was walk away, writes Richard O’Leary.
“M
ake a habit of two things: to help; or at least to do no harm.” Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician considered to be the father of medicine offered this advice to doctors more than 2400 years ago. Those words could just as well be adopted by those providing guidance to our modern political leaders – in particular the former chief of staff to Tony Abbott, Peta Credlin. The puppet master par excellence has emerged from the former Prime Minister’s shadow (if she was ever in it) to defend herself against accusations she played a large part in his downfall. She has blamed “insider gossip from unnamed sources” for white-anting the PM and questioned the integrity of some of those adversaries: “If you’re a cabinet minister or a journalist and you’re intimidated by the chief of staff of the
your time is up. Not because you are necessarily in the wrong, not because your detractors are necessarily right, but because once you become the news, you are harming, not helping. Whether it was fair or not, Credlin had become the lightning rod for any dissatisfaction about her boss: the captain calls, the clumsy communication with backbenchers, his tin ear to the community’s concerns. Her intentions may well have been pure – vowing to fight for her boss’ survival until the very end – but in hindsight she may been better served to take on board some other advice from Hippocrates: “Walking is (wo)man’s best medicine.” If she had walked away earlier this year it could have been the perfect tonic for her boss, although I suspect his malady was always going to be terminal. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
prime minister, then maybe you don’t deserve your job.” Both those statements may be true, but they ignore the fact Credlin had become part of the problem. Back in February, when Abbott survived his political near death experience, Credlin was seen as bossy, a gatekeeper and micro-manager – which describes perfectly just about every political chief of staff I’ve ever worked with. Many of those criticisms could just as easily be flipped to compliments: a born leader, loyal and protective, with great attention to detail. And it should be remembered it takes a special personality type to work successfully with political leaders, who all have incredibly complex personalities themselves. The problem for Credlin was she had become the story – and once that happens, as any political staffer knows
