ZAMBRERO MOOLOOLABA
UNDER CONTRACT
Zambrero, the largest Mexican restaurant franchise in Australia opened its first Sunshine Coast store only 12 months ago, on the beautiful Mooloolaba Esplanade and now you can secure this amazing opportunity, as the owner has committed to retirement and is ready to consider all offers. Take the hard work and huge set up costs of a first year out of the equation and make the owner’s loss your gain.
I have been fortunate to see some exceptional business opportunities over the years, however, few could rival the simplicity of this money making machine.

The business model is so simple, yet it works so well and the work is incredibly consistent. The clients are charged annually in advance and with less than 5% market share, the growth potential is staggering for those really wanting to drive the business.

ave you ever travelled to another region for a music festival, a football game or an art exhibition? Events have become major drawcards and big business for places like the Sunshine Coast, and in this week’s cover story we find out why they are being described as our very own pot of gold. Also in this edition you can take a cruise to the colour and culture of Papua New Guinea, get the lowdown on salt from nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara and test drive the car which is proving the best things come in small packages. Leigh Robshaw has a compelling story about the Sunshine Coast mum who could only talk in rhyme after suffering a stroke. You’ll never guess how she made the most of this life changing experience. As always, there’s plenty of property, including the opportunity to become a judge in the Sunshine Coast’s most prestigious housing awards. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

CHI CHANGE
Author, motivational speaker and acupuncturist Jost Sauer of Maleny takes a unique approach to drug and alcohol rehab. FIRST JOB?
FAVOURITE BOOK?
My first above-board job was with the Catholic Church in Germany. I was studying Social Pedagogics and the church employed me to work with the children of Turkish migrants. I loved it. I was supposed be helping them integrate into mainstream German society but their culture seemed much richer and more interesting and I’d encourage them to stick to that instead. Obviously, I was the wrong person for the job. I couldn’t keep the rebellious, anti-authoritarian part of my nature down.
The Scripture of Western Ascension, a Daoist mystical text from the late 5th century C.E.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? In 2007 while writing The Perfect Day Plan, I discovered a way of living in which you follow the chi-cycle and each day becomes better than the one before. So you live in the now, but have a sense that the best is always yet to come. I see a lot of clients who are trapped in the past. . . and it just creates pain.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . On earth, my wife, Kirsten. But for me ‘family’ extends past the physical. I do four hours a day of chi-practice and achieve states where I feel deeply connected to everything. I have been working as a therapist for over three decades and for many people family is not supportive or loving, it can be the opposite, so it’s great to have some other support options up your sleeve.
IS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? I fell back into speed addiction after I arrived in Australia, and didn’t finally, finally quit until the mid-80s. From then on I lived in a state of emptiness. I was working with addicted youth, thinking that helping others would make my life feel worthwhile, but it didn’t. Each morning my first thought was to kill myself. I thought that was how I
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Two years.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I love the chi of this area, just being here feels good. It’s my favourite place in Australia.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE LOCAL PLACE? IMAGE: PENNY RIDDOCH
I recently wrote my fourth book, The Rebel’s Guide to Recovery, which is a manual for those who don’t want to follow the existing judgmental 100-year-old recovery model, and I’m currently adapting this to an online rehab. It will show people how to quit drugs creatively and how to have an extraordinary future. It is based on my professional experiences but also my own journey of recovery. I became a speed addict before I managed to graduate from Social Pedagogics and subsequently got kicked out of college, lost my job with the church, deserted from military service and then lived in the underground. I escaped to Australia in 1981, became a drug and alcohol counsellor, then an acupuncturist specialising in addiction recovery.
was going to feel forever. Then one day in 1989 someone suggested that I study Chinese Medicine. I got a rush, a physical jolt, I had the sudden urge to create something. Creation is the antidote to depression, and from that day on everything shifted.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? I have absolutely no regrets. I’ve done many, many things that I’m supposed to be feeling deeply ashamed of, or apologetic for, from dealing drugs to ruining people’s weddings, but I learned from each of those things. The mystics see Earth as the planet of transformation, the more stuff we get or do ‘wrong’ the more fuel we have for transforming ourselves.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Every morning, regardless of how I feel, I get up early and do my chi-practice.
My addiction recovery program is currently running at a retreat centre at Belli Park, and every time I drive along the section of road between Maleny and Kenilworth, my heart lifts. Something about that countryside is so special.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? Lunch at The Boat Shed at Cotton Tree. The food is delicious and the location is beautiful.
FIRST CAR? A souped-up fire-engine red, Mini Cooper S, with a wide body-kit and fat exhaust. I lowered the car so much I couldn’t even drive it over speed bumps, so I had to use my pushbike most of the time. That mini kicked off my love affair with cars, an affair I’m still totally immersed in.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? This will all make sense one day.
TEA OR COFFEE? In the ‘90s I was obsessed with the success gurus. I worked like mad, became an insomniac and drank vast amounts of coffee. I had a grand mal seizure, after which I never drank coffee again. These days I’m a big fan of green tea.
NRL OR AFL? I had to Google ‘NRL’ and ‘AFL’ in an attempt to answer this question, so I think that says it all!

COVER STORY
GOING FOR GOLD
Major events are seen as the Sunshine Coast’s pot of gold, but not everyone agrees. Words: Richard O’Leary
Mooloolaba Triathlon
T
he starter’s gun goes off and 40-year-old Manuel de Andrade dives into the water in front of the Mooloolaba Surf Club. The sea is all foam and froth, arms and legs. All he can hear is muted splashing, breathing and blood pumping through his head. He tastes and smells salt. He stays to the side of the pack to avoid kicks to the head. Trouble is the last thing he needs; he’s never swum this far before. “Bit scary for me swimming that distance. You know how if you run and you get tired you can just slow down, well with swimming you can’t slow down you have to continue.” In many ways the start of tomorrow’s 3.8 kilometre ocean swim in the Queensland leg of the World Series Swims, will also be the end of a journey for de Andrade. He started preparing for this event at a Sydney aquatic centre six months ago. His routine has become early morning starts as he pushes himself for four-and-half hours in the pool every week. “These training sessions have been starting at 5:30 in the morning. So you’re putting in all this work. And I work very long hours so it’s a lot of dedication to do this.” He only started competing six years ago. When he began he could hardly

manage the length of an Olympic swimming pool, but he bought a lot of books and DVDs and taught himself how to swim properly. He has had to overcome the added obstacles of sea sickness and short-sightedness. Antinausea tablets overcome the former, while he trails other swimmers to get the better of the latter. “I breathe on both sides, every three strokes. One, two, three, breathe. One, two, three, breathe.” Despite his dedication, he won’t win the event. But for the Sunshine Coast and its campaign to attract major events to the region, he is the perfect competitor. You see, he arrived on Thursday for Saturday’s event – with his wife and two daughters, and family friends from the Gold Coast have also travelled up to watch him compete and catch up on old times – and he isn’t leaving until next Tuesday. Put simply, that’s great for local business. In the few days he’s been on the Sunshine Coast de Andrade has spent thousands of dollars and by the time he leaves, he will spend thousands more. The finance manager for Woolworths has prepared his budget for the trip just as well as he has trained his body for the swim. He’s allocated money for five nights’ accommodation, car rental, theme

parks, eating out, and picking up a few souvenirs. By the time he gets on the plane to fly back to Sydney, he will have spent nearly $3500 dollars. Times that by the 800 competitors who are travelling to the Sunshine Coast (200 locals are also expected to enter) to
compete in one of the five ocean swims on the day and you can understand why the region has started to focus more attention on attracting major events. By the end of the year, the Sunshine Coast will have hosted more than 30 major and regional events, which are predicted to generate more than $50 million, attract 164,000 people to the region, and increase visitor room nights by 225,000. No wonder events are being described as the region’s pot of gold by the Sunshine Coast Council’s Major Events portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray. “It’s an easy way to create some economic benefit for the entire region, and it’s also an easy way to increase visitor numbers, which leads to economic benefit to the entire region. The end game is to host as many of these big events across the whole region for our small businesses.” Almost one-quarter of Australians have been to at least one event in a regional area in the last two years, with the most popular being food and wine, music, gardening, sport and art. O’Pray says many of those who visit will go on to become destination advocates and promote the region to friends and family. “People will come here to do the event. They are in the race mode, they are in the race focus, but six months down the track they’ll say let’s go and enjoy it as myweeklypreview.com.au

a family this time. Let’s go and see the sights and do the touristy things. The event’s actually the ad. But it’s the repeat visitor we are looking for all the time.” In 2014 the council established the Sunshine Coast Events Board, which was tasked with attracting more events to the region with the help of the more than $1 million raised through its Tourism and Events Levy. It seems to be working. Next year events are expected to generate more than $60 million when the region hosts its best ever line-up, including the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, the Australasian Police and Emergency Services Games and the Australian Outrigger Titles. However, securing the events is only half the battle. Some businesses are yet to be convinced of the value of major events – a view not shared by Mooloolaba pharmacist Mario Barbagallo who has led the field in the race to make the most of the surge in competitors and spectators. “You get thousands of competitors [at the Mooloolaba triathlon] and we get their wives and partners and uncles and aunties. We try to let these people know that we know what’s going on. So we have a triathlon bike in the front window. We have a promotion on the sort of stuff triathletes want. It’s really just telling them we know what’s going on and we can help you.” He’s been so successful that what was once a bit of a bonus to his business has now become something it depends upon. On the day of the Mooloolaba ocean swims he will be running an endurance event of his own. He will open his pharmacy at 7.30am, an hour earlier than usual. “Why? One of the swimmers may have forgotten his rehydration formula or he might want an energy vial so he comes in, or his partner has a stomach bug and needs some medication. Or they’re going to be sitting out in the sun all day and they need a hat. Some sunscreen.”
“We will grab our Speedo goggles stand and plonk it right out the front. Most people walking down The Esplanade would not expect a pharmacy to be selling Speedo goggles, so if they don’t see them from the street front, we won’t sell them. That’s the sort of thing we’ll do for the ocean swim.” When the actual races are on his
program to train local businesses how to make money out of events. More than 100 businesses have already attended the workshops which give tips on how to get a competitive advantage: put out the welcome mat, train staff, wear themed uniforms, create promotional or special offers, and use social media. That practical advice has been
“The sad thing is there is a lot of negativity from some of the retailers. I can’t understand why”
Mario Barbagallo business will get a breather before it gathers pace again after lunchtime. “They then start filtering back. They want things to do. They want to go down the beach. They want a soccer ball to kick down the beach. They want to go and sit under a beach umbrella and read. That’s when you do the good business. And keep in mind you don’t have your normal 1000 people in Mooloolaba, you’ve got 2000 people in Mooloolaba so you have double the chance.” At 8pm his marathon will be over after a successful day riding the slipstream of another major event. He doesn’t understand why more businesses don’t adopt his approach. “The sad thing is there is a lot of negativity from some of the retailers. I can’t understand why. They say it makes no difference, in fact it’s worse. There’s less parking. This is a good one, they say those sorts of people don’t come into my shop. Those sorts of people? Those sorts of people are the general public, so I’m not sure who you are trying to attract into your business.” To try and clear this hurdle, the council has launched Events+, a
complemented by the creation of an app which allows businesses to target competitors before they even arrive in the region. Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club general manager Anthony Johnston says the technology is giving his business a winning edge. “The promotion of that app to all the attendees means that we have a foot in the door before they even get here. So I think it’s very important for all operators to consider that. From our perspective we’ve got an offer in there to entice people to the club, knowing that once they get here, they’ll have a good time.” Events+ is based on the belief that if businesses prepare just as well as the competitors for each event, they will reap rewards similar to those of Manuel de Andrade when he reaches the end of his longest swim. “My aim is to feel as if I’ve finished the race and I couldn’t have done any more. If I finish the race and think I could have gone a little bit faster then I get disappointed. As long as I put in all my energy and effort, then that’s the main thing. It will be an accomplishment.”

Sippy Creek Animal Refuge is joining forces with 4 Paws Animal Rescue to raise money with a dog walk this Sunday, October 25. People can register from 7.30am at Lake Kawana East Bank Foreshore. The walk begins at 8am and there will also be breakfast, coffee and a sausage sizzle available. Prizes will be up for grabs for the best dressed pooch. There is a $10 registration fee.
The largest number of Light horsemen since WW1 will parade down Woombye’s main street on October 31 from 3.45pm to honour the 98th anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba in the Sinai desert. A life-sized horse monument constructed by the Buderim Men’s Shed will also be unveiled at the town’s CWA Park as part of the Federal Government’s 100-year centenary of Anzac grant. The contemporary sculpture is made from stainless steel and designed by shed member and artist Jeff Franklin.
BRING ON THE CRUISE SHIPS The Sunshine Coast is set to become the premier destination for cruise ships with yet another boutique luxury ship adding Mooloolaba to its itinerary. The announcement about the five-star Azamara Quest comes in the wake of the Pacific Pearl visit earlier this month. Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says the new ship will carry 680 passengers and its arrival on January 10 will provide a significant boost for businesses and tourism operators.

Residents can now have their say on the Maleny Recreation Draft Master Plan 2015–2030. The plan covers three key sport and recreation sites including Maleny Showgrounds, Witta Sportsground and the Maleny Community Precinct. Councillor Jenny McKay says the study explored the needs of the facilities and involved community engagement. Residents can view and discuss the plan with council representatives on October 29 from 3pm to 6pm at Maleny IGA.
BREAK-INS DOWN ON COAST
House break-ins on the Coast have dropped by 1.5 per cent and shop break-ins have decreased by 29.8 per cent according to the latest Queensland Police Service crime statistics. Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller says the results indicate local police are working hard at tackling crime. “What the data shows is that the crime rate has increased around 8.5 per cent in the last financial year. Importantly, we have seen a decrease in the rate of offences against the person of 10.6 per cent. The rate of assaults are down 7.3 per cent and the rate of robbery is down 3.9 per cent.’’

NEWS
Kawana Way remained closed this week after a water tank burst sending 2.7 million litres of water onto the road last Friday. One car was caught in the tsunami-like wave but its occupants, including a woman and her two children, escaped unharmed. Crews began clearing the steel carnage from the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital site earlier this week. A second tank that was damaged was also dismantled. Investigations into what caused the accident will begin shortly.
RECORD VISITS IN SEP
Passenger numbers are on the increase, with Sunshine Coast Airport recording more than 250,000 people travelling through the airport in the first three months of the financial year. This is a 12 per cent increase on the previous quarter and the highest September quarter traffic on record. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the results show a growing confidence in the region. “The strong economic performance of the Sunshine Coast is now clearly visible,’’ he says.

HOUSE VS SUPER: WHICH TO PAY FIRST Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
S
hould I accelerate my mortgage re-payments or make additional payments to my super account? It is a question I am often asked and the answer generally differs depending on individual circumstances. Generally speaking, people will often focus on their mortgage at the expense of making contributions to super. However, this is not always the better approach. As you can appreciate, there are a number of factors to consider in making this long-term decision. And yes, it is a question that requires a long-term mindset. Mortgage repayments are usually made using after-tax income. However, voluntary superannuation contributions can be made using
pre-tax income via salary sacrifice or by claiming a tax deduction on the contribution (assuming you satisfy the 10 per cent rule). These types of contributions to super are subject to concessional contributions limits ($35,000 for those aged 49 and over at 30 June 2015 and $30,000 for those under age 49). Importantly, these concessional contributions (CC) are subject to tax at 15 per cent (assuming you do not earn over $300,000 per annum). Tax is only one of many considerations when trying to answer this question. You need to consider what stage of life you are in. Are you a professional couple? Or do you have a young family? Are the kids finally leaving home? Or are you approaching retirement? Contributing funds to super will mean that they are generally locked away until you reach your preservation age. So you must consider if you are likely to require the money to fund lifestyle requirements or any unforseen
expenditures. This is often hard to predict. Your risk tolerance is also something that should be considered. For example, if you are a conservative investor, you may prefer paying down the mortgage where the return is guaranteed through reduced interest expense. Conversely, if you were more of a risk taker, you may consider making the contributions to super where returns are generally not guaranteed. Ultimately, there is no one right answer to this question. Engaging with your financial adviser will assist you in determining whether or not you should accelerate your mortgage re-payments or make further contributions to super. PROFILE
RHYME AND REASON In the lead-up to World Stroke Day on October 29, Shelagh Brennand shares her story of life after a stroke. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
S
helagh Brennand had always prided herself on her quick, investigative brain. She was a detective inspector in England, before moving to Australia in 2008 with her husband and son and starting work as a private investigator. It was a mentally demanding job, which she loved. But on a hot day in April 2013, everything changed. It was the last day of the school holidays and she was gardening with her eleven-year-old son Patrick, at her Pelican Waters home. Her husband David was away on a FIFO job. “Patrick helped me do some weeding,” Brennand says. “Stupidly I thought I’d mow the lawn. I came in around lunchtime and didn’t feel well. I shouted out to Patrick to bring me a glass of water and went into the downstairs toilet. I knelt on the floor and felt like I was going to be sick. That’s as much as I remember.” When Patrick found her on the bathroom floor, she couldn’t move or talk. “I could mouth words but couldn’t get them out. I thought, oh my god, what’s happened? It was a weird feeling. Patrick had come downstairs because I’d called him. The usual control freak I am, I was
trying to make words with my fingers.” Brennand had suffered a stroke when a blood clot had burst through the basilar artery in the back of her neck. A local friend Erin dropped by unexpectedly and between her and Patrick, they got an ambulance there within ten minutes. “I remember seeing Patrick’s face,” she says, her voice breaking. “I was going out on the stretcher and he was crying.” After tests at Nambour Hospital, stroke
physician Dr Rohan Grimley told her she’d had a stroke and her husband David flew back from Roma the same afternoon. “He said afterwards, ‘I thought you were going to die’. They gave me a notepad and I sort of scrawled words on it. My brain function worked to the point where I knew what I wanted to say.” Fortunately, the tests revealed Brennand’s stroke had been mild. She was able to talk within 24 hours and was out of hospital in a couple of days. But as she recuperated at home, something strange happened. She could only think in rhyme. Her social worker suggested she go with the flow, so she began writing poetry. It was to become her anchor when she suffered post-stroke depression about four months later. She’d had the stroke in April, gone to England for her nephew’s wedding in June, came home and celebrated her 50th birthday in July, then celebrated receiving her Australian citizenship in August. It was a big few months. “David went back to work and everything went back to nothing. It hit me: Oh my god, what am I going to do with my life? It hit tremendously and my sister took
me to the doctor after days of crying and not being able to get out of bed. “I did try to do a very small investigation but was in bed for a week because it took too much brain work. I get more anxious and stressed about anything that puts any strain on my brain. “When I hit post-stroke depression I wrote a lot of poems about how down I felt. It was a healing process.” Another major part of her therapy was exercise. She signed up for Melinda Bingley’s ten week challenge, lost nine kilos and regained a positive mindset. “She knew I needed something else for my brain to focus on because I couldn’t go back to work. She gave me hope.” Brennand has now published a book called A Stroke of Poetry, which aims to raise awareness not just about stroke, but that life can be fulfilling after stroke if you have a positive mindset. Some of the proceeds will go to the National Stroke Foundation, which she says is invaluable. The book will be launched at Caloundra Power Boat Club on November 29. All are welcome to attend. Visit the Facebook page ‘A Stroke of Poetry’ for more information.

PLAN YOUR WEEKEND The Big Top Shopping Centre in the Ocean Street precinct has reinvented itself as the home of sophisticated dining and entertainment. Check out some of the great venues. . .
A CULINARY JOURNEY
ENJOY A NIGHT IN Sometimes by the time Friday night rolls around the most appealing thing is relaxing in the comfort of your own home. If a night in is what you need, stay out of the kitchen and grab some takeaway for dinner from Big Top Shopping Centre. For those wanting to relax with a drink consider stopping by the BWS liquor store. The store offers 200 specials every single day. It is open seven days a week. Visit bws.com.au and always drink responsibly.
There is no need to jet to Peru to visit Machu Picchu. Let the staff at the Sunshine Coast’s own Machu Picchu take you on a tour of culinary delights. The Maroochydore restaurant has earned a solid reputation as a venue dishing up great food and boasting a great Latin vibe. The restaurant is headed up by a Brazilian chef who will take you on a journey. There are many tasty menu options but venue manager Mick Wallace says the signature dish Asado de Costilla de Res is hard to go by. It’s a combination of five hour slow-braised beef short ribs served over black beans with spiced honey sauce and confit garlic. There is live music from Latin guitar duo Pablo and Jaryd every Saturday night and the famous Salsa Sundays each week from 2pm. “People should try Machu Picchu if they want to be transported to another place, where trying new food is the norm, not the exception,’’ Wallace says. Machu Picchu is open for lunch and dinner, seven days. Bookings essential. Phone 0481 217 693.
Get your salsa on! Try Salsa Sundays at Machu Picchu every week from 2pm.
TRADITIONAL TABLE Try breakfast with a difference at Zahtar. The Beirut eggs with chickpeas on a bed of hummus and served with pickled vegetables, olives and eggs are one of the specialty dishes presented by owners George and Sarah Bou Mansour. The couple established the Lebanese restaurant one-and-a-half years ago and serve up traditional family recipes. One of their signature dishes is the Lebanese Table which offers a selection of 13 dishes. The mouthwatering line-up includes traditional dips, salads, small mezza dishes and grilled meats. “This offers our diners a traditional Lebanese experience in shared dining,’’ Sarah says. “It is a great social experience and we offer this along with a selection of Lebanese music and drinks. “Dining at Zahtar gives everyone on the Sunshine Coast a relaxed experience of Lebanon.’’ The restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Visit zahtar.com.au.
SWEET AND SAVOURY Salted caramel loaded shake. These words conjure up images of a decadent, rich and tempting treat. Now, add a Wagyu beef burger to that and you’ve had the Hello Harry experience. Owned by celebrated chef Tony Kelly and his business partner Scott Hoskins, it’s the burger joint where the burgers are cooked by professional chefs. Everything is made from scratch with no preservatives. The brioche buns are made in-house and they grind their own beef. Better yet, Hello Harry sources ingredients from local suppliers. It is open from 11.30am to 9pm every day. You can find Hello Harry on Facebook.

Papua New Guinea from the air
Huli tribesman in the Tari area of Papua New Guinea
GO TRIBAL IN PNG
So close to Australia yet worlds away culturally, Papua New Guinea is the hot new cruise destination. By Shelley Dempsey, AAP
P
apua New Guinea is a rare and exotic cruise destination of misty mountains, smoking volcanoes, jungle drums, bare-breasted dancers and shy, excited smiles from locals. A place where travellers not only connect with ancient tribal cultures, but
also with compelling Australian wartime stories. For the visitor, the beauty of the landscape and of the people with their big-hearted welcome is striking. “The locals are very friendly and they really want us to know their country,” says Sun Princess shore excursions manager
Elena Lorini, an Italian who has worked on cruise ships all over the world. “You have more interaction here with locals than a lot of other ports and they put in more effort. It’s a completely different destination.” On a recent cruise to PNG on the Sun Princess cruise out of Brisbane, our 2000 passengers sail into fascinating ports in Rabaul, Alotau in Milne Bay and Kiriwina and Doini islands, where they adventure ashore to interact with locals in a big way. They paddle us out in canoes to snorkel spots, lead us on foot through villages and schools, dance in tribal costume, sing us heartfelt songs of welcome and tell us about their ancient culture of bride prices, betel nut, mu-mu food, yams and shell money as currency. While Princess and P&O are the main cruise lines, PNG is also attracting attention from others such as Cunard and National Geographic, which sent their first ships in September. Milne Bay Province, which takes in the Trobriand Island group and is now a cruise hub, will host 57 cruise port calls
next year. With all this new attention, it’s a good idea to get there before it changes. At present, life is still simple on the islands, with an innocence and shyness among locals and we found their sightseeing tours ashore to be rough and ready, but surprisingly good. We visited the Rabaul war museum and cemetery, where 1036 soldiers from WWI and WWII from Australia, New Zealand and other countries are buried. In Rabaul, we visit WWII Japanese war tunnels, a volcano observatory and also a ghostly site with a bubbling hot spring to view the black volcano that erupted in 1994, and is still smoking. Still a traditional and religious country of 7.5 million people and 750 different languages, tribal culture is alive on Kiriwina Island in the Trobriand Islands, yams are traded as currency and there are love huts for women to select partners as they like. Locals with red mouths chew betel nut, there are cheeky funny children and market souvenirs for sale, including exotic wooden carvings, string bags and shells. LATEST PODCASTS
Anxiety, shyness, or fear may be common personality traits, though for some it occurs alongside other symptoms such as high stress levels, anger, poor memory and depression, and can be a lifelong struggle. Preferring small groups of close friends rather than large social groups, poor dream recall, susceptibility to allergies, fatigue, or poor sugar metabolism, can all be symptoms of a genetic disorder, which is on the rise in Australia. Affecting up to 40% of people, it can lead to much larger problems, including a serious risk of developing addictions, alcoholism, severe depression, or psychiatric disorders. Pyroluria reduces your absorption of zinc and B6, necessary for production of brain chemicals for mood, digestion, hormone production, and to fight infections. A cascade effect toward ill health eventually develops creating emotional stress, producing cortisol and inflammation throughout the body and digestive tract. Poor digestion follows creating food sensitivities, and allowing bacterial infections to invade.
A cascade effect toward ill health eventually develops Fatigue, weight gain, fluid retention, hormone imbalance, depression and anxiety, are typical symptoms of food sensitivity, creating a secondary layer of mood effects. Further deficiencies then develop such as iron, vitamin D, B12, leading to fatigue. Without these very important nutrients, the immune system becomes compromised, causing colds, virus, and bacterial infections, some known for creating further symptoms of depression and anxiety. The collateral damage can be vast, creating a decline into ill health and a depressive state seemingly unsolvable. Pyroluria is simple to treat, with a rapid response time, though most people go undiagnosed. Sufferers respond poorly to common anti-depressants, so knowing that this condition affects you or your family is very important, and can be diagnosed using a simple urine test. Treating Pyroluria allows the body to repair to then successfully address stress hormones, bacterial infections, and food sensitivities, bringing your health back to its optimum state allowing you a bright healthy future, free of the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Visit www.advancedwellness.com.au and take a simple quiz online to identify if you may be at risk of suffering with Pyroluria. The right diagnosis and investigation into your health is the key to finding happiness and balance in your life for you and your family.

MY LIFE
GOOD SALT, BAD SALT Standard table salt is nasty stuff, but Himalayan pink salt packs a powerful health punch, writes Cyndi O’Meara.
S
alt has been known as a panacea for thousands of years. Often called ‘the fifth element’ – along with water, earth, air and fire – people used to be paid in salt (that is where the word salary comes from). But salt has been demonised in recent times, with low-salt foods marketed to consumers as being healthy. As with most foods, it’s about consuming the right type of salt. If we eat the best high quality mineral salt – such as Himalayan pink salt – it is actually good for you. Himalayan salt was formed 250 million years ago beneath the salt mountains in the Himalayan foothills of Pakistan and is uncontaminated by environmental factors. It is minimally processed and contains 84 minerals and trace elements that are highly beneficial for the body, including magnesium, calcium, copper, potassium and iron. Most table salt is a processed form of
sodium called sodium chloride that is bleached, heavily processed, stripped of its most important minerals and contains anti-caking chemicals. As well as using Himalayan salt in my cooking, I drink 500ml water every morning with 1/8 teaspoon salt mixed in. Adding salt to the water improves the electrolyte balance, allowing the water to be better utilised by the body. The healing effects of natural Himalayan salt are gradually becoming better understood. We can find it in skin care lotions, in bath salts and it is even used in inhalation or cleansing treatments for illnesses of the respiratory system and for a variety of other indications. Make the switch to Himalayan salt and enjoy the health benefits. Find out more at changinghabits.com.au.

MY OPINION
SHIFTING THE BLAME
KEEP CALM AND TIDY UP
It wasn’t the media but their own failures that brought Abbott and Newman down, writes barrister and USC law lecturer Alex McKean.
Decluttering is in vogue, but it’s not as easy as it seems, writes Sami Muirhead.
I
have bought a new book to try and de-clutter my life. I know. The irony (or stupidity) is not lost on me that I am accumulating more stuff in the hope I can buy my way out of having too much stuff. The book is called The LifeChanging Magic Of Tidying Up. It is the number one New York Times bestselling guide to decluttering your home written by a Japanese overachiever who loves to clean her bedroom once or twice a year as she sips green tea and smugly soaks in her pristine surrounds. The author only needs to truly clean once or twice a year as her bedroom is so light, airy and devoid of any junk. It is simply a haven for serene thoughts. The theory is if you have a clean space to live in then your life will change for the better because you have time to focus on goals and people who matter to you. The way to declutter your home is basically to hold each item in your hand and determine if it sparks joy in you or not. I want to Chinese burn this author. I know very well there are 38,559 things lying under my couch alone. I hate my couch so much. It is like some Vortex Of Doom that sucks anything in its path underneath its linen cover. When I finally give in to my despair and clean out under the stupid damn couch every few weeks, I find apple cores, cast off Band-Aids, empty baby bottles, toys, and once I even found a whole carrot. Maybe my husband waits until I go to bed and pigs out on carrots
instead of chocolate every night? I am seemingly the only fool in our home to ever look under the couch and take action to stop the squalor from spreading all over the house. If I ever die I am pretty sure the couch will win and continue to claim items at an alarming rate under its skirting, and eventually A Current Affair will feature a story on that Sunshine Coast family living in the house from hell due to the evil contents lurking under the couch. Either my three kids aged under four think under the couch is the rubbish bin or it’s just a fun game to stash loot under there so they can watch their mother go insane a little more each day. The only time in eight years my husband has looked under the couch is when we lost the TV remote control and it was footy finals time. That sparked an all-out emergency. The entire household was given strict instructions we were on a BOL (Be On Lookout) for the remote. The ATL (Attempt To Locate) went on for days before my husband caved and bought another one. We never did find that sneaky lost remote control. Maybe this book will bring some balance to my crazy life and I will empty my home of clutter, but I doubt it. After all, I do have 237 teacups and 26 white jugs. But that is a story for another day.
For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
I
n recent times we have heard from both Tony Abbott and Campbell Newman that ‘the media’ was at least partly to blame for their political demise. Each former leader has seemingly overlooked their own contribution to their fate, preferring to lay the blame elsewhere. It is surprising to say the least that these two individuals should single out the media as being at fault. Each of them was swept into power on a wave of support from the Murdoch press, which ditched any pretense of journalistic balance in favour of partisan support. After the respective elections, News Ltd continued to trumpet the alleged successes of each leader, and refused, in the main, to analyse their manifest inadequacies. Mr Newman has been particularly eager to rewrite history. His attempts to paint his press conference on January 26 – where he refused to answer questions and repeated his mantra of ‘strong choices’ – as anything other than a personal failure to communicate effectively, are laughable. The same level of arrogance and disregard for an independent media tasked with keeping government to account underlay Mr Abbott’s shameful moves to stifle and control the ABC. Of course, Mr Newman and Mr Abbott have failed to nominate the real reason for their respective downfall, which has little or nothing to
do with the activities of the media. The primary reason is nothing more or less than the fact that each leader failed to govern on behalf of their backers, rather than their constituents. It is not the case that the demise of Mr Abbott and Mr Newman indicate governments in Australia can no longer engage in reform. Their failures had nothing to do with the pace or quantity of their reform agendas. The problem was the content of the retrograde measures they sought to inflict on the populace, at the behest of the narrow interests they truly represented. Just as Australians are puzzled by the politics surrounding the regular atrocities played out in schools and colleges across the United States, so we are unconvinced that we will benefit from the importation of other measures which increase the misery of the vast majority of US citizens. Policies predicated on the philosophy that the poor are to be blamed for their poverty, designed to rip away a decent minimum, free healthcare and affordable education were rightly rejected, along with their proponents. It is to be hoped that Mr Abbott and Mr Newman represent the high water mark of this type of unrepresentative politician bent on the deliberate promotion of inequality into what remains, at least to some extent, a social democracy.

ive years ago the Palmview development made headlines as it was signed off by the council, the state government, developers and Unity Water. A first of its kind, the plan was hailed for delivering affordable housing, environmental protection, a zero carbon community and the region’s first public transport oriented community. The agreement was a major achievement for the newly amalgamated Sunshine Coast Council, aiming to be Australia’s most sustainable region. It would set a new benchmark for sustainable development and set the standard for future Sunshine Coast communities. Five years on the land is still lying fallow. The dedicated public transport corridor is gone and the council is proposing changes to the structure plan that will effectively remove all remaining sustainability provisions that would have
made Palmview different. The 12.5 per cent affordable housing target is going. The conservation areas are reduced by 20 per cent. The goal of creating a carbon neutral community and the need for renewable energy infrastructure, scrapped. Gone also the 80 per cent reduction in demand from the region’s water supply, the need for more terrace and town housing, the integration of residential and commercial buildings in the town centre, and the list goes on. In short, everything to make this development anything other than stock standard and could have contributed to the Sunshine Coast becoming Australia’s most sustainable region, is out. Given that the agreement was hailed as a great outcome by all parties, one cannot help but wonder, what has changed? Did the community do an about-turn and lose interest in sustainability? Or did developers decide
that they had agreed to do more than they really wanted and set about dismantling the agreement? You don’t have to be a cynic to see that the proposed changes point to the latter. Every change, from removing water savings to altering densities, takes us further back to a business-as-usual development, building the same product, with the same layout and the same margins. It’s not surprising that developers try to maximise profits but what the hell is our council doing? Why on earth did they reopen negotiations on a development that was signed, sealed and set to be delivered? Whose interests are being served here? If the Sunshine Coast wants to be known as Australia’s most sustainable region, this simply won’t do. The council has to serve the interests and uphold the values of the people of the Sunshine
Coast, not the out-of-town corporations making a profit from an ever-growing population. Yes, we want investment in our region, but not investment at all cost. It should be clear that we welcome businesses to our region that understand and operate in accordance with Sunshine Coast values. We don’t accept that developers build unsafe housing here and neither should we accept that they build communities unless they meet our sustainability standards. The Palmview structure plan created a benchmark for future Sunshine Coast communities. It was signed off and ready to go. Yet right now, the council is seeking to change that benchmark, removing everything that made the community sustainable, and presenting it as a triumph of negotiations. That’s not leadership, that is an appalling lack of judgement.

There’ll be ghosts, ghouls and shrieks of fright next weekend for the annual scare fest that is Halloween. Retired Kuluin couple Doreen and Denis Northey will be celebrating the event by opening up their home to children and families in order to fundraiser for farmers doing it tough in the west. Their Crows Ash Place property will become a Halloween wonderland with more than 1000 decorative pieces on display including Frankenstein, ghosts and spiders. There will be treats for the kids who are encouraged to dress up in costume. “We’ve been doing this for the past five years,’’ Doreen says. “The kids love it.’’ Last year the Northey’s fright night attracted 293 children from all over the Sunshine Coast. The display will be on show on October 31 between 5.30 and 9pm.

MOTORING PREVIEW
A LITTLE BEAUTY Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the NISSAN MICRA.
N
issan’s baby Micra is a little car with a big following. Since the pint-sized little hatchback first came onto the market way, way back in 1982, more than seven million buyers worldwide have put a Micra (or a March as it’s called
38 My Weekly Preview | October 23, 2015
38.indd 1
in some markets) into their driveway. That earns it a mention on the all-time bestsellers list – although a long way behind the 40 million Toyota Corollas buzzing around the planet. And it makes the Micra a big player in the ‘smallest’ market of all – the
burgeoning micro-car category that, for many buyers, represents their first taste of the new-car experience. As well as the cosmetics, the Micra gains a 5.8-inch touch-screen (with sat-nav and reversing camera) in
higher-spec models (including our Ti test machine), upgraded interior trim, USB input and Bluetooth audio streaming, plus new alloys, fog lights and auto on-off headlights. That puts it closer to higher-end rivals like the iconic Fiat 500 and sets it apart from the likes of Suzuki’s Alto and Mitsubishi’s Mirage. Price-wise it sits roughly in the middle of that pack. Unusually for a Japanese car, Micras sold in Australia are built in Nissan’s facility in India. That might be a bit unsettling for some, although the build quality and overall presentation of our test machine allayed any lingering concerns. The Micra uses a tiny 1.2-litre, three-cylinder engine – and in the case of our test machine coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission. A manual transmission is also available. Its outputs of 56 kilowatts and 104 Newton metres of torque might sound a bit puny, but it does the job remarkably well in most circumstances. But the engine’s limitations become apparent when the Micra encounters steep hills or is asked to pull from low revs. Even turning on the air-conditioning noticeably blunts the car’s performance continued over>

MOTORING
<from previous page – which is quite sprightly with the cool air turned off but far more modest with it on. So it’s a car well suited to cooler climates or winter driving. And considering the pint-sized engine, its average fuel consumption of 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres isn’t all that impressive. While the Micra’s recent upgrades have helped give it a fresh feel, the car’s age is evident in a couple of glaring facets. The four-speed auto, for instance – is serviceable enough but is well short of the five-speed or six-speed units that have become the accepted standard for cars in this category. And the drum-style rear brakes (instead of the four-wheel discs we’re used to seeing) are fairly old-style technology – although again we found few complaints with their operation. We’ve driven a few of these micromachines and the Micra certainly holds its own on most scores. It can’t match the impressive safety technology of the VW Up!, nor is it as plush and beautifully finished as the Renault Clio. But against most benchmarks the baby of the Nissan family stacks up pretty well. It’s much more attractive
than some rivals (I’m thinking of Holden’s Barina Spark and Mitsubishi’s Mirage) – more affordable than others (the slightly larger Mazda2). With a starting price of $13,490 plus onroads for the ST manual – ranging up to the $16,990 plus onroads you’ll pay for the flagship Ti model – the Micra represents reasonable budget buying for young entrants to the new-car market. Most of those, I suspect, will be young females. However with an on-road cost nudging $20,000 for the Ti, it sails perilously close to Korean options like the Kia Cerato and Hyundai i-30, which offer similar drive-away pricing and lengthy warranties – and in my view are far superior vehicles to the little Nissan. Not that the Micra is without its appeal.
Dynamically it ticks all the boxes. It steers and handles predictably, whether at city or highway speeds, with acceptable levels of cabin quietness. On the open road it cruises comfortably at the speed limit (although has to work hard on steep climbs) – and feels nicely settled when changing direction or dealing with uneven surfaces. I’d feel happy enough with my daughter driving one (in fact my son’s girlfriend is a very satisfied Micra owner). Despite its very petite dimensions (3.8 metres long and 1.66 metres wide) the Micra offers decent space for passengers, particularly those in the front. Cargo space is also surprisingly good – and can be further enhanced by folding down one or both of the split-fold rear seats. On the negative side, though, the seats don’t fold flat meaning this expanded space isn’t optimal. Still, this is hardly the car you’ll buy if you’re planning to transport large items on a regular basis. More likely you’re looking for fuss-free, economical and enjoyable driving – and the Micra certainly delivers that. After all, seven million people can’t be wrong.
NISSAN MICRA HOW BIG? Not very. But the space is well used thanks to the tall, spacious layout of the cabin and enhanced by the excellent all-round visibility. And its cargo space is quite generous for a car of this size. HOW FAST? Again, not very – particularly if you have a decent load on board, or are using the airconditioning. Turn that off and the Micra is fairly sprightly. HOW THIRSTY? Disappointingly so. Its official average thirst of 5.9L/100km (6.5L/100km for auto models) is frugal but not earthshattering for a small car with a very small engine. HOW MUCH? With prices starting from $13,490 it’s within the reach of most young buyers – and it backs that up with decent equipment levels, good safety and a smart look.

IT’S YOUR CHOICE
Do you think you’re a bit of an expert on housing design? Prove it by becoming a judge in the HIA awards.
Wayne Rosenberg’s custom built home is among the People’s Choice Award nominees.
D
o you love home design and have an eye for detail? If so, put your skills to use and become a judge in the HIA
awards. HIA is Australia’s peak residential building, renovation and development industry association and offers an array of awards to help HIA members receive recognition for outstanding
workmanship, design and innovation in the dwellings they build or for their professionalism on and off the worksite. The My Weekly Preview and AD Marketing People’s Choice Award is now open with members of the public invited to vote for their favourite entry. HIA Sunshine Coast branch manager Stuart Collins says the award is a unique initiative now in its third year.
“It enables industry and the public to vote for their favourite custom built entries with every entrant in these categories vying for the title,’’ he says. “The awards also assist in showcasing building excellence and innovation and it is the quality and strength of the overall level of entries that provides competition and results in the annual raising of the bar. “While HIA’s judges are extremely professional and are experienced in identifying building excellence, ultimately they are not the end users which is why it is interesting to get the public’s perspective on what they deem to be the best home based on their lifestyle needs and other circumstances.” There are 27 custom built homes vying for the title with people able to view the entries online with exterior and interior images of the properties available. Collins says the Sunshine Coast is fortunate to have highly skilled and innovative builders, consultants and tradespeople.
“In addition we are blessed with a natural building environment that features coastal and hinterland living at its finest and provides a fantastic blank canvas for our building professionals,’’ he adds. “This is complemented by our very own Sunshine Coast residents who are prepared to challenge our industry and experiment with cutting edge technologies and new build and design concepts. “While there are undoubtedly other great homes being built around the country the Sunshine Coast punches above its weight. “No other regional area has won as many awards at state and national level as the Sunshine Coast.” To vote in the People’s Choice Awards visit houslinglocal.com.au to register your vote. The winner will be announced at the HIA Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay Awards on November 6 at Novotel Twin Waters.
INDUSTRY WRAP
The health hub is proving to be the perfect tonic for residential sales.
W
interest. It’s no surprise that buyer interest is coming from health professionals who are drawn to the possibility of living in the heart of the country’s largest health infrastructure project. The Oceanside Health Hub is taking shape with the precinct’s first premium waterfront residential land release just one in a range of projects taking place. Stockland Senior Development Manager Mark McMahon says the exclusive east facing waterfront lots range in size from 255-square metres to 522-square metres, the lots are priced from $345,000. The Oceanside Health Hub’s first apartment complex, RGD Group’s $30 million North Shore Oceanside Kawana, was officially launched last month with construction scheduled to start in early 2016. This latest project comes as construction is due to begin on Opal Aged Care’s $36 million vertical aged care facility within the next month.

The precinct’s first commercial project, the BEST WESTERN PLUS Oceanside Kawana Hotel, is due to open in November, a year after construction on the $15 million project began while
the $3 million Oceanside Early Learning Centre is expected to open in December. Evans Long’s $21 million Pulse Oceanside Medical complex is also expected to be completed in December.
Confidence is growing in Queensland’s property market. According to the ANZ/Property Council Survey the sunshine state improved two points this quarter to 132 on the confidence index, two points above the national average and well above a score of 100 which is considered neutral. The survey is a measure of industry confidence with more than 2200 respondents taking part. Property Council Queensland executive director Chris Mountford says there is room for improvement with a 12 point gap in confidence levels between Queensland and New South Wales. “Queensland’s property industry confidence remains in-line with the national average, but there is daylight between us and New South Wales,” he says. The State Government’s commitment and success in delivering new planning legislation, a new SEQ regional plan and State Infrastructure Plan will shape industry confidence, Mountford says.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Don’t you love it when it’s onshore, small and just plain horrible and a stoked mate sends you pictures of a perfect glassy right hander right out the front of his accommodation in Hawaii. Yes, that was torture but regretfully I am happy for him… Now the back end of the pro season is getting sweaty – looks like five guys are in the hunt for the world title with two contests to go. Portugal has started with no results yet. But this has been won by Julian before so it could be interesting. There is now only 400 points between 1 and 2 – now remember Julian and Mick were denied 1000 points each because of the shark incident. I predict a huge sh*t fight if there are less than 1000 points when this goes down!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bigger night tides this week with whiting and flathead moving over the yabby banks around Goat Island on the rising tide - use yabbies. Sand crabs are in the cod hole area and down to the Maroochy bar. You can get Jew on live bait at the motorway bridge. SURF: Dart and whiting are taking worms and pippies along Maroochy North Shore on the making tide. Sea bream and chopper tailor are still about in numbers at Pincushion with dawn and dusk the best. OFFSHORE: Snapper and sweetlip are working over the shallow reefs of The Gneerings and Murphys with most fish taken on pillies floated mid water. Mixed reef fish are on squid on the Barwon Banks. A recent tournament returned sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi and cobia along the fifty metre line. FRESHWATER: The best time of the year to fish our local impoundments with live shrimp and deep diving lures returning bass and golden perch in Lake Baroon and Borumba Dam. Somerset and Bjelke Petersen dams are still returning quality bass on jigged or spinning lures. Golden perch are taking deep divers and floated shrimps.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The week starts wonderfully well, as you enjoy the last lucky moments of the Venus/ Jupiter conjunction. Good fortune or happy news comes courtesy of a child, teenager, friend, lover or via a creative project, favourite hobby or sporting endeavour.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Gung-ho Geminis are raring to go! But don’t let your enthusiasm for an exciting new project overtake your ability to knuckle down and get the job done. If you promise more than you can deliver, then others will just end up feeling disappointed.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] If you’re having relationship problems, they won’t be resolved by curling up in your shell. Be courageous – no side-stepping crabs! You’re often teary on a full moon but this one’s in earthy Taurus, so you’ll feel more emotionally grounded.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] It’s the perfect week to throw embryonic dreams or fledgling projects into the spotlight, as the full moon fires up your reputation zone. Don’t worry if they’re not quite ready. Public scrutiny will let you know if you’re on the right track.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] You’re keen to shop up a storm, as you find ways to improve your physical appearance. So it’s a terrific time to buy a new outfit, have a haircut or purchase beauty products. You’re also keen to travel or learn something new, as the full moon stimulates your adventure and study zone.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] You’re in an uncharacteristic rush but do you know where you’re going? It’s not a good week to make important decisions, as your mind is racing. Wait until you’re feeling more settled and focused. Close relationships could also be confusing.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Stubborn Scorpios can too easily get stuck in a relationship time warp. If things aren’t going well in your love life, perhaps it’s time to keep what’s working and change what isn’t? So this week’s challenge is to ride the winds of change, and keep things in perspective.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Your sunny Sagittarian side shines for all to see. Influential people are waiting to assist you so don’t be too proud to ask for help if you need it. And make sure you pace yourself. Rushing around won’t necessarily get you to the finishing line any faster!
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Have you been feeling frustrated about the future? Does it seem as if your goals and dreams are permanently on hold? Things take a leap forward (courtesy of Venus/ Jupiter and the full moon) so make a wish and then make it happen.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] This week’s stars stimulate your eccentric Aquarian side, your quicksilver mind, and your tendency to do things in unconventional ways. There’s no denying you have fabulously ideas about your future, but thinking about something isn’t the same as actually doing it.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] What are your aspirations for the future? Are they ambitious enough? With some productive brainstorming (and a practical plan) you can get your goals and dreams up and running again. You’ll feel surprisingly positive on the weekend when the sun stimulates your confidence.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Joint ventures and relationship improvements are on the table, but don’t spoil a potentially positive and productive week by being an impulsive ram and putting your foot firmly in your mouth! Slow down and strive to think before you speak.

THE LAST WORD
THIS WEEK’S PARENTING LESSONS Know what tomato flies are? Neither did Richard O’Leary, until this week. 1. Fishing line is a dangerous skipping rope, especially in low light conditions. It seemed like a bad idea at the time and so it proved to be. Although I guess my sons can always say they became SNAGS very early on in life. 2. When you introduce your son to some added responsibility around the house by making him the go-to person for feeding the dog – remember before you feed the dog. My five-year-old was so upset when I absentmindedly provided the morning snack that I had to retrieve the dog’s breakfast and put it back in the fridge so my youngest could do his job (yeah, I caved). 3. When the abovementioned fiveyear-old child then wants to go to school with bunting tied to his waist and call himself Rufus – that’s okay, there are worse things than pretending to be a dog for the day.
I thought his colourful flag tail really suited him. His classmates seemed to agree. 4. Bright orange witch’s hats found near your campsite can keep your kids amused for hours; who knew they could be used as wheelbarrows, roller coaster carriages or weapons? 5. When camping, never assume when your sons says ‘that kid’s riding my scooter’ that it just looks like his scooter or you may well find yourself having to promise to buy him a new one when you are packing up to leave the next day. 6. Allowing your seven-year-old son to cut the wood for the fish feeder is worthwhile even if it takes a little (hell of a lot) longer. His smile of satisfaction is well worth the wait. My carpentry skills are pretty limited
anyway (despite being the son of a builder – or maybe because of it). 7. Listen to your kids. Really listen, kids can say the most remarkable things. My favourite recent observation comes from a friend’s son who calls the embers that explode into the night sky from a bonfire the ‘tomato flies’. Love it. 8. Having been a communication director for a government doesn’t mean you are qualified to negotiate with a five-year-old who doesn’t want to go to school – then again, Mother Theresa and Kissinger don’t have those skills. 9. And finally, don’t make your kids’ lunches while wearing a tie or do the dishes with your cufflinks on. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
