OUR STORY
My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
any people would argue board meetings should be renamed bored meetings, but a group of surfers on the Sunshine Coast is changing all that. Their charity Board Meeting has a whole new take on the term, with its annual surfing event raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for children with disabilities over the past decade. You’ll meet some of those kids in this week’s cover story by Candice Holznagel. Also in this edition, you get to meet Buderim’s King of the Man Cave, travel to Hawaii for an adventure described as “one of the top 10 things to do in your life”, get some advice from nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara about how to get rid of headaches without popping pills, and test drive the latest Jaguar, which some claim is the best ever. As always there’s plenty of property, including a sneak peek at some of the Sunshine Coast’s most exclusive apartments, which are being described as ‘sky homes’. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
KING OF THE MAN CAVE
Rick Beasley lives in Buderim with his wife June and is passionate about maintaining the community spirit in the village. He’s an active member of Buderim Rotary and founding president of Buderim Men’s Shed, which has its annual open day on November 14. FIRST JOB?
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
After schooling, I spent a few years on the family property in the Chinchilla area. This was a great experience as my father decided that ringbarking ironbark trees and building stockyards was the best way to “consolidate” my education.
The day I turned my girlfriend into a wife and then when she presented us with a son, Steven.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
Life is full of regrets but you can’t go back. Sometimes we don’t see things coming. All we can do is just try to make a difference for those left behind and those who suffer from the same debilitating illnesses.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I am almost fully retired but still do a little consulting work to keep in touch with the beef industry. The Men’s Shed keeps me extremely busy.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
FIRST CAR?
Being involved in the establishment and growth and development of the Buderim Men’s Shed.
A pale blue Falcon XR utility (before utes were trendy!).
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
FAVOURITE BOOK?
Almost anything by Bill Bryson.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?
IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
Jeffrey Archer, The Prodigal Daughter.
WHEN DID YOU COME TO THE SUNSHINE COAST?
After living in Central Queensland and beautiful Mackay, North Queensland, for most of our lives, we moved to Kingaroy and then to the Sunshine Coast about 12 years ago. We currently love and live in Buderim.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
We called into Buderim on our honeymoon 44 years ago and thought it would be a great place to live. It took a bit over 30 years to get here. I don’t think there is a more beautiful area in the world than the Sunshine Coast. It has a great climate, immense natural beauty and excellent surfing beaches for my wife.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? A greater focus by government and residents on communities and involvement in community activities.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Martins Creek in Buderim.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME HERE? The usual range of places: Mooloolaba Beach, Blackall Range, Yandina, Noosa.
I am happiest when enjoying a drink in the company of family and good friends, taking our grandson, Dylan – and Pepper, our son’s huge German Shepherd – for a walk.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
Pompous people who criticise but are not prepared to actually do anything.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I am smart enough to know you can’t tell an 18-year-old anything!
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE AND HOW DO YOU HAVE IT?
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Strong black coffee.
My grandfather used to say: “Aim high, even if you hit a cabbage.” It is about having a goal or a dream and never giving up.
NRL of course. The Broncos are a great local team, but it was great to see the Cowboys get up this year.

Going for a surf with your mates takes on new meaning at Kawana’s annual Board Meeting. Words: Candice Holznagel
“I hope for the best and expect the worst and cherish the good days. . . I’m happy to give the rest of my life to her just for her to be happy”

I
f only everyone had the opportunity to meet Paula Phillips and her daughter Georgia Brown of Noosa. One conversation with Phillips brings life into clear, sharp perspective. Her words expose raw emotions and leave you reaching for your own child, never wanting to let go. Their story is a harsh reality that reaches into your chest, grabs your heart and stays there long after you say goodbye. This mother and daughter – a former police officer and her precious girl – defy all odds. On December 14, 2011 Phillips gave birth to her first and only child, Georgia. By all accounts it had been a dream nine months, the perfect pregnancy. So it came as a shock when the baby girl had to be resuscitated at birth, whisked from her parents’ arms and immediately flown to Brisbane’s Mater Children’s Hospital. Georgia was placed on life support 14 My Weekly Preview | November 6, 2015

and given a mere two hours to live. She remained in hospital for two months before doctors sent her home, telling Phillips to keep her baby girl isolated. “She’ll be a ‘bean bag baby’, that’s how they described her,’’ Phillips says with defiance in her voice. “They said if she got a cold, she’d be ‘on a rocket ship to heaven’. “I lived with her in my bedroom for 12 months. She was hooked up to an oxygen tank for the first 12 months of her life. Georgia had a nasal gastro tube to receive 100 per cent of food and drink… she only came off the tube on May 30 this year.” Now Georgia is fully mobile and like most four-year-old girls loves princesses, My Little Pony and all things pretty. She’s also eating and drinking by herself despite fears this may never happen. But unlike other children she can’t go to kindergarten or socialise with kids her own age for fear of infection. And when she has a fall, she “falls like a tree”.
Georgia has a genetic condition called muscle myopathy – in layman’s terms: her muscles did not form properly. She also has profound hypotonia over her entire body, severe reflux with aspiration and impaired bronchial tubes that compromise her airway. Despite working with numerous specialists, doctors are yet to medically
diagnose Georgia’s condition. The family has travelled to New South Wales seeking answers and also flew a specialist from Germany to work with Georgia. Unfortunately, it’s a medical waiting game. At best, DNA specialists have suggested Georgia’s condition is so rare it could be the result of a new type of gene. Georgia also has a cardiomyopathy,
HARRIS’ STORY
Harris is a happy boy who has a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Last year Harris had surgery to de-rotate and reposition both of his hips. To do this, both his legs had to be broken and reset in a better position. Harris also has deteriorating spinal scoliosis. He needs to be well supported in different upright positions to maintain head control. As he grows, finding appropriate positioning gets more complex. The Board Meeting bought an $8500 recliner armchair that allows Harris to be comfortable.

where her heart doesn’t function properly and her cardiologist has suggested a heart transplant may be necessary in the future. However without a diagnosis of her condition this is not even an option, which is cause for further concern. “Georgia is having an awful lot of trouble with her heart,’’ Phillips says. “For her to be eligible for a heart transplant we need to have a diagnosis. No one will assist in giving her a diagnosis.’’ Phillips’ heart breaks over and over for her little girl. She is frustrated with the lack of medical support and frustrated at the life they are forced to lead. It’s an understatement to say that life has dealt this family one hard blow after another. So, when community support comes their way, Paula welcomes it with open, grateful arms.
BANJO’S STORY
Banjo was born 16 weeks premature with severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy. The charity repaired and carried out modifications to his stroller and pram, donated $2000 towards stem cell therapy and assisted in raising a further $30,000 for the therapy. Banjo has shown promising results as a result.

“I am always amazed at how we rally so quickly to a cause, especially when it involves kids that need help” Mark Skinner Sunshine Coast charity The Board Meeting recently donated a $3500 electric bed to prop Georgia up so she can sleep comfortably and without fear of suffocation. Lying flat is not an option due to her lack of muscle development, reflux and aspiration. The Board Meeting chairman, Mark Skinner, says he has heard one too many stories like Georgia’s. Since its formation 11 years ago the charity has donated about $600,000 to Sunshine Coast children. Skinner says 100 per cent of the money raised goes back into the community with administration and advertising costs absorbed by the eight-member committee. “We’ve bought two complete wheel chair vehicles, electric wheel chairs, electric hospital beds, walkers and of late we funded $3000 for the deposit on a spinal surgery for a girl whose spine is curved due to spina bifida,’’ he says. “Our charity is very different in that our supporters get to see exactly where their donations go. “It’s very moving and very emotional, that’s why we do it.” Referrals for beneficiaries come through health and educational professionals. Recipients must be under the age of 17, live on the Sunshine Coast and not have access to the money through government sources. Next Saturday, November 14, The Board Meeting’s annual surfing competition will take place.
Businesses are encouraged to support the event by ditching their conference rooms for the ocean to hold a board meeting with a difference. “There are four in a team and it’s a tag team system,’’ Skinner explains. “One member from each team paddles out and when you get a good wave you run in and tag the next surfer. “It’s all about fun. While there is a competitive side to it, it’s fun. “The Sunshine Coast is a wonderful community of caring, generous people. “I am always amazed at how we rally so quickly to a cause, especially when it involves kids that need help.” Although professional surfers including Julian Wilson and Dimity Stoyle have taken part in the event, participants don’t need to be experts on a board. You can be young, old or a professional or amateur surfer. At the end of the day, you will be making a positive difference. One day of surfing will help these families who have simple hopes and dreams for their children. “Every day I look at Georgia lying in that bed. She gets in there, curls up with her toy and says: ‘I love my new bed’,’’ Phillips says. “I look at her lying there asleep and it brings a smile to my face. “I hope for the best and expect the worst and cherish the good days. “My hope is that she lives. “That’s it. I just want her to be happy. I’m happy to give the rest of my life to her just for her to be happy.’’

AIRPORT EXPANSION A STEP CLOSER
GAMES ATHLETES COULD TRAIN HERE
The $350 million Sunshine Coast Airport expansion project is one step closer to reality with the State Co-ordinator General earlier this week announcing the council has substantially addressed issues raised in the Environmental Impact Study. The public will now be given another opportunity to review the study. “The public was invited to make submissions on the original environmental impact study late last year and this second phase will enable the public to view the additional information council provided in response,’’ Mayor Mark Jamieson says. The council will host a public meeting on Monday, November 9 from 5.30pm at Novotel Twin Waters Resort. The AEIS is available through the Off ce of the Coordinator General’s website, the council’s website, customer contact centres and libraries during the public notif cation period of November 2 to 30.
The Coast’s sporting and tourism facilities were put under the international spotlight this week when a delegation from the Scottish Commonwealth Games Association toured the region. The 18-strong group sized up the suitability of the region as a training base ahead of the 2018 Gold Coast Games. Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray says the group visited the university and Sunshine Coast Stadium. “We’re hopeful they’ll see our region as an ideal location to acclimatise and prepare for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in April 2018. The opportunity to have world-class international athletes basing themselves within our region is one that council is keen to explore.’’ The opportunity will bring tremendous benef ts to local businesses, O’Pray says.

ARIA SCRAPS 20 UNITS PLUS ROOFTOP PLANS
A
new $200 million project in Mooloolaba is expected to go out for public comment within weeks, after the developer relodged its amended development application to the Sunshine Coast Council. The ARIA Property Group’s Michael Hurley says the rooftop amenities are gone and 20 units have been cut from the plans to try and get the development off the ground. “It makes it harder for us to attract the level of operator that we are going to look for by removing those [rooftop] amenities. Every single time you remove a requirement or amenity that a five-star operator looks for, it just makes it harder,” Hurley says. “Taking off the five-star international rooftop amenities would have been a great point of difference, something that would have been very advantageous not only to the development, but for Mooloolaba.” To meet height requirements, the roof level of the building planned for the corner of the Mooloolaba Esplanade and the River Esplanade has been reduced
from 47.05 metres to 41.5 metres. The developer says this makes it 8.5 metres lower than the nearby Newport and three metres lower than the Sea Pearl. To meet the building setback requirements, ARIA has also reduced the building from 159 to 139 units. “Losing 20 units from the building is also significant, it has a significant effect on the project viability. You remove 20 units out of a building and that effects sales revenues, Hurley says.” The company has also offered to undertake the development infrastructure for part of the park under the council’s Mooloolaba Place Making Plan, with the cost of those works to come off the developer’s infrastructure charges. The company says this will mean only one construction disruption, instead of two. ARIA has offered to relocate the 49 car spaces to be lost under the council’s Place Making Plan to the development’s underground car park, with the company to wear the $2.7 million cost. The property group hopes the council will vote on the proposal before the next local government elections, which are set down for March next year.

WHAT GOES DOWN, MUST COME UP Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he recent decision by the US Federal Reserve (the Fed) to keep the official cash rate steady surprised less on the decision itself than on the reason why. In short, the Fed has shifted the goalposts and has downgraded the role of the US unemployment rate in favour of actual inflation and international developments in guiding policy. It increases uncertainty about the Fed’s policy and in our mind contributed to recent weakness in stock markets – the path forward for stocks has become less clear. Investment markets are partly driven by the amount of uncertainty perceived by investors. To minimise any adverse impact on
markets, and to guide their own decision, central banks create frameworks around economic measures. This does not eliminate uncertainty as the future is unknown, but it should reduce uncertainty about how the central bank should respond to future events. The American monthly jobs report, previously considered the pre-eminent economics report, has now been downgraded in importance as the Fed feels comfortable allowing the unemployment rate to undershoot their objective. Global economic and financial developments” appears to be the new policy setting factor, but that is much harder for investors to assess. If the Fed found it difficult to hike in September, their decision is unlikely to be any easier later this year. The Fed’s statement has lowered the odds of a rate hike in the near term. The market is now pricing in roughly a 50 per cent probability of a rise by the
December meeting. Ultimately the timing of the first rate hike is less important than how far, and how fast, the Fed ultimately raises rates. To this point, the Fed has lowered its long-run projection for the policy rate from 3.8 per cent to 3.5 per cent and is now more closely aligned with long-term market rates. While it signalled that the path is likely to be shallow and gradual, markets may become concerned that delaying the start of rate hikes could ultimately require a more aggressive move later. Essentially there is a concern that the Fed is falling behind the curve.

MARY CAIRNCROSS CAFE: HOPING FOR A FAIR GO he cafe at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve in Maleny is a much-loved destination for locals and tourists alike. Its unobtrusive ambience blends well with the natural surroundings, the food and coffee are top-notch and the sweeping views of the Glass House Mountains are superb. But change is afoot after the Federal Government announced in October it will give $1 million through the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund grant towards the park’s building renewal project, with a new cafe and education centre to be built over six to 12 months. It’s a well-deserved funding boost for the hinterland park, which receives 200,000 visitors a year. But not everyone is thrilled about it. Single parent Sarah Castaldi has owned the cafe business that has supported herself and her children for almost nine years. She has worked 50 hours a week, six to seven days a week with few holidays – but there’s no guarantee she’ll win the tender for the new cafe. “This has always been on the burner, the whole time I’ve been here,” she says. “I’ve just worked day by day and had faith in it. I love it. In retrospect, if I’d known it was going to take this long I would have approached it completely differently. I would have put more into it financially, simple things like changing the furniture.” The council is still unsure of how much it will need to contribute. A Sunshine Coast council spokesperson says, “The estimated construction cost is $4.5 million.

How much of the full amount is funded by Council is dependent on the outcome of pending funding applications.” Castaldi took over the business in February 2007 and employs ten staff members, including three chefs. Her daughter Moni manages front of house and her son Tom (pictured with Sarah) works the kitchen. The family business was a runner-up in the Range Restaurant and Cafe Awards at the Real Food Festival in September and has a loyal clientele. “A lot of my people say to me, you’ve got to let us know
where you go if you leave because we’ll follow you,” Castaldi says. Not that she’s planning to throw in the tea-towel. “You’d think they’d get people from everywhere for this tender but I have nothing against my name, I’ve run this place well and always adhered to their rules and regulations so that could give me a bit of leverage in getting the tender. My record is very good.” “When I took it over, it was just a little coffee and tea place. The first five years was hell on two feet because I wasn’t allowed to advertise. They didn’t want to bring too much focus into the cafe; it was about the park.” The new building is characterised by glass and timber, the polar opposite of the cafe’s current rustic charm. “I think it’s a bit sterile,” says Castaldi. “The ambience of what’s here now will be shifted forever. People come here because of how relaxed it is. They feel like they’re sitting in the park, even when they’re in the cafe.” New design or not, Castaldi is hoping the cafe she’s poured her heart and soul into won’t be taken from her. “It would definitely be an ego slap,” she says. “If we got to that point and I didn’t get it, I’d have to question why. “I have a lot of love for this park, it’s an icon. I fell in love with the situation I was in and just kept working hard at it and built up a brilliant business. I was always hoping in the back of my head that it wouldn’t happen and that we’d have a gentler change. And I hoped they’d offer it to me because I’ve been here for such a long time.”

MY BODY
SCENT OF A STAR
10 steps to perfect natural makeup
The long pixie cut One of the hottest summer hair trends is the long pixie cut as sported by Jennifer Lawrence (above). Liz Freney from Kooshka Hair, Mooloolaba tells MWP: “The longer pixie is coming back in – long fringes, softer shaping, tapered neck. It’s still tailored but you can just easy wear it. You can put some Kevin Murphy Hair Resort spray in to get a messy textured look. “I know Michelle Williams often sports a long pixie, and Jennifer Lawrence has had it short. Asymmetrical styles are still very popular, and I’m still doing the undercut with longer top sections, or shaving one side off and leaving the other side quite long. Long side fringes are big.”
Step 1: Exfoliate and moisturise your face so your skin is a smooth canvas. Step 2: Apply a sheer foundation or tinted moisturiser. Start from the centre of the face and massage it outward. Step 3: Conceal any flaws by using a small amount of concealer on blemishes. Step 4: Dust a small amount of translucent powder over your forehead, nose and chin. Step 5: Lightly brush a soft powder blush across the apples of your cheeks, your brow bone and temples. Step 6: Choose two neutral soft brown eye shadows, one lighter and one darker. Sweep the lighter colour across the eyelid and under the bottom lash line using a soft blending brush. Next, apply the darker shadow through the socket of the eye to create depth. Step 7: Use a soft brown eyeliner pencil to outline the perimeter of the eye and gently smudge and blend the pencil. Step 8: Curl your lashes and apply two coats of brown or black mascara. Step 9: Define your eyebrows with a brow pencil or powder, but keep it subtle. Step 10: Keep your lips natural by using a tinted lip balm.

HEAL YOUR HEADACHE
Here are six tips to help you manage headaches without popping pills, writes Cyndi O’Meara.
T
here are many different forms of headaches. They can be a result of food allergies and intolerances, tension, stress, hormonal fluctuations, high blood pressure, lack of adequate nutritional food intake or a lack of sleep and hydration. Many people pop a pill when a headache starts, but there are a number of natural approaches you can try first. 1. Avoid processed, refined and packaged foods – instead eat fresh, seasonal and organic whole foods. A quality diet will nourish your adrenals and allow the body to cope with tension and stress much better. 2. Stay hydrated with filtered water. 3. Heal and seal your gut. Abnormal gut flora upsets the hormonal balance in the body, leading to many headaches and migraines. Eat gut-healing foods such as sauerkraut, cultured vegetables, yoghurts, kefir and kombucha, or start
consuming a quality probiotic each day. 4. Drink organic espresso or coffee. Yes, this really does work for some people. Coffee dilates the blood vessels, which helps remove harmful toxins that can be the cause of headaches and inflammation. 5. Headaches due to high blood pressure in most cases are due to a magnesium deficiency. Aim to increase the amount of magnesium rich foods in your diet such as cacao, dark leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fish such as mackerel, avocado, figs and bananas. Use a magnesium spray or soak in magnesium salt baths for 15 to 20 minutes. 6. Good sleep, enough sleep, and managing stress levels will help with all forms of headaches.

A
three-metre-wide creature swooping within inches of your face in the middle of a dark ocean probably isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But night snorkelling with giant manta rays off the Kona coast in Hawaii is undoubtedly a major drawcard for tourists. I had the chance to get in the water with these creatures during a seven-night trip with Un-Cruise Adventures, which touts the activity as “thrilling” and an “unbelievable experience”. Lonely Planet says it is one of the top 10 activities on Hawaii’s Big Island, and the Travel Channel apparently voted it “one of the top 10 things to do in your life”. I was yet to be convinced. A Kona Dive Company guide came on board to give us a quick lesson on manta rays and what we could expect from our hour in the water. He made a few points that got me over the line and into the water: One: manta rays are not stingrays and therefore do not have the eponymous weapon. Two: manta rays do not have teeth. Three: we were not supposed to kick around too much because it could scare them off. I assume it was not the guide’s intention, but I liked that I now had a way to fight off these stingless, toothless monsters. I shrugged into my wetsuit, and jumped into a skiff to be taken to the
snorkelling site about 200 metres from the ship. To attract the plankton and, in turn, the manta rays, divers put spotlights on the sea floor and snorkellers grip surfboards with torches pointing downwards. Just that scene itself was amazing. About 100 people in full rubber suits and masks bobbing in the dark ocean with sharp lights coming up through the water was like something out of a science fiction movie. We split into groups, six to a board, and lay still as the plankton gathered, wondering if the guide’s “we see manta on 90 per cent of our outings” was going to apply to us. It was quite clear when the first one appeared because fingers jutted out from all directions, everyone eager to point it out. We got cooler as more arrived though, eventually just enjoying the experience and not feeling the need to alert each other to the new arrivals. After 40 minutes of watching the rays cruise through the water, the winter Hawaiian waters had taken me to my limit and I climbed out shivering. I agree, it was a thrilling, unbelievable experience – and I was also pretty stoked to have not been eaten. – AAP The writer was a guest of Un-Cruise Adventures.

DETECT GLUTEN IN 2 MIN
HI-TECH TORCH
For people suffering from coeliac disease, eating gluten carries a serious risk and for people who suffer from gluten intolerance, it can cause unpleasant symptoms. Eating out can be a difficult task, especially when it comes to identifying if the food contains gluten. That’s where Nima comes in. The handheld portable sensor can test food for gluten in two minutes or less. Users simply have to place a small piece of food into the capsule and insert the capsule into the sensor.
Having a project 450 per cent funded is a good indication that it will be a success when it hits the market. The Luxor 2 is the world’s first adaptive focus torch and is at the heart of a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign. Its inventors hoped to raise $25,000 through the fundraising campaign but have secured more than $112,000. The torch is designed to optimise light to maximise the eye’s central and peripheral vision.
The Nima will be available in America from next year with more details about international shipping to be released. Visit nimasensor.com.
For a pledge of US$79 ($112) through kickstarter.com you will receive a torch when they ship worldwide in March.

Is Joint Pain Disturbing Sleep and Restricting Your Lifestyle? Tired of Pain Killers? An Undiagnosed Condition may be the Cause Tired of taking pain killers and anti-inflammatories? Is joint pain stopping you from doing the activities you used to love, or worse, is it killing you to do simple tasks? Research has proven that inflammation can be the driver of chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, but where is the inflammation coming from, and why is it happening to you? More and more people are being affected by a sneaky disease that can masquerade as fatigue, anxiety, depression, digestive symptoms, weight problems, and many more serious diseases. Joint pain is just the warning sign of total systemic inflammation. Conditions of inflammation are commonly caused not only from diet but also from immune responses to certain foods, chemicals, bacterial, fungal or viral infection.
Don’t accept pain as normal, there is something that can be done about it. With over 10,000 research papers written about it, this hidden epidemic is referred to as “the disease your doctor can’t diagnose” with good reason. Increased intestinal permeability or leaky gut, is a condition where toxic food particles, environmental chemicals or pollutants, and bacterial waste leak through your digestive tract and enter your blood stream. Once your immune system is triggered, your body produces a hormone, cortisol, which drives your immune system into action, promoting inflammation and beginning the development of chronic disease. It is suggested that more than 100 autoimmune diseases all begin with leaky gut. While traditional medications may provide you with temporary relief of your symptoms, these often come with side effects and can lead to further health complications. It’s only through treating the root cause that you can look forward to a positive pain free lifestyle. Results can be achieved quickly with correct investigation and treatment. Specific testing can be ordered to identify offending foods, and types of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Educating you on eating a diet that decreases inflammation, encourages weight loss if needed, is highly nutrient rich, and will leave you feeling full and satisfied, is the first step. You have a choice. Change the path of your life forever. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a FREE ½ HOUR consultation, or visit www.advancedwellness.com.au

MY OPINION
WHY IT’S TOPS TO BE AUSSIE
A DRESS TO STOP THE NATION Sami Muirhead needs to find a miracle outfit for Oaks Day in Melbourne – and fast.
I
have a massive FWP (First World Problem) this week that has been causing me to lose sleep. I feel it has more than likely been somewhat of a female epidemic across the Coast, given we have just survived another Race That Stops The Nation. You see my husband jagged some tickets at the very last minute to attend Oaks Day in Melbourne at Flemington for the Spring Carnival. Hip hooray! The tickets are for The Birdcage. Double hip hooray! I can do all the celebrity stalking I want while stuffing free cheese in my handbag and downing the glasses of fizzy stuff. No doubt it is going to be good French fizzy stuff that makes you feel like you are floating on clouds after just a sniff of the stuff. The grog I usually buy from the bottle shop does not make me feel like I am floating on anything and in fact makes me feel quite nauseous. This makes me drink less, so I am okay with the sea sickness it induces. So back to the original FWP. I have to find a dress. This is despite the fact I have about one hundred dresses but none of them are suitable. They are too big or too little or too revealing for a bogan-free bash with the beautiful people of ‘The Birdcage’. I have to look respectable for my celebrity stalking. I do not want people to point at the cheese stealing crazy lady and assume she is from Queensland. Whenever I have attended anything interstate in the past I always feel terribly underdressed. This is probably
due to the fact I have my casual thongs here and then my going out thongs. Dressed up to me is slicking on some lipstick. Our clothing reflects our beautiful laidback lifestyle. But I need to up the ante for the social racing set. I also have to buy a bra, as mine are all about seven years old and do not have elastic. I have to find shoes but I just cannot stand the pain of high heels anymore. I have to find a dress that sucks in my stomach, pulls up my backside and has enough scaffolding to hold up my bosom. I am not sure such a dress exists, unless I go to that outdoor shop, Boating, Camping and Fishing. And then I need a hat or a fascinator (my husband can never remember their real names and calls them fantasisers or pacifiers). And there is pretty much zero time to do all this between work and life. Hmmm. I am not whinging, because going to Melbourne for Melbourne Cup week has been on my bucket list for a long time, but I am just saying I wish I had a few more days to try to spruce up my get-up for the right royal knees-up. You know what I am saying, right girls? Of course you do. We are a funny breed when it comes to our clothing cupboard. The one thing I do have sorted out is my bag. It is huge. Goodie. There’s more room for the cheese that way. For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
Nathan ‘Nugget’ Dell says the All Blacks can have their shiny trophy – Aussies still rule.
A
fter five weeks of rucking, mauling, scrummaging and watching Prince William pull what little hair he has left out over the fortunes of his beloved England side, the 2015 Rugby World Cup drew to a close in the wee hours of Sunday morning. Through bleary eyes, we diehard Wallabies fans watched a final that was not dissimilar to a dad mucking around in the yard with his son. The boy tried his best, but at the end of the day, the bigger, faster, stronger and wiser opponent was just too good. So as the All Blacks cart the William Webb Ellis Cup back to the Land of the Long White Cloud, it would be easy for us to get discouraged. So being the solution focused little monkey I am, I have come up with a list of why it’s still bloody tops to be an Aussie.
LOW MAINTENANCE
Ha Ha, sucked in New Zealand. Now that you have collected that magnificent golden trophy that is the eternal symbol of your nation’s utter global domination in the 15-man code, now you have to look after it. Do you have any idea how much upkeep a trophy that shiny would need? I shudder to think how much your tiny nation will need to spend on Brasso and rags alone. Good luck. No such worries for the losers… that’s us.
WE GIVE ANYONE A GO
Another reason why it is still tops to be an Aussie. Daryl Somers. We are such an accepting nation, we let this man become a TV icon, and rumour is he is coming back to TV. Someone call the Pope. With a sense of charity such as this, we are all due for a good hard canonising.
SHE’LL BE APPLES
How do I know we are a tops nation? We let Tasmania be part of it. Let’s be honest, the Apple Isle is like that weird kid from over the back fence that your mum made you play with as a kid to be nice. They are the Reuben Kincaid to the mainland’s Partridge Family. We will let you hang about, but don’t try to sing any of the songs.
HOME GROWN TALENT
So what if New Zealand are the World Champions of Rugby and probably will be for the next 26 years? We are a proud nation and we can be equally chuffed with the global superstars we have produced. Crowded House, Dragon and Russell Crowe, just to name a few. So chin up, kids.

MY OPINION
PALMVIEW ON TRACK While some amendments to the original plan were necessary, the new Palmview Structure Plan still maintains many sustainability provisions, writes Mayor Mark Jamieson.
S
unshine Coast residents, both current and those looking to live in our beautiful region, can be confident the new Palmview development will meet our vision to be Australia’s most sustainable. And with Palmview, which has a 15- to 20-year development timeframe and will be home to around 16,000 people, this will come at no extra cost to our ratepayers. Becoming Australia’s most sustainable region and creating communities within communities starts with good planning. That includes Palmview, which we are confident will not only be sustainable, but also affordable and deliverable. It’s important that everyone understands some background on the Palmview project. It became clear that the infrastructure agreement signed in 2010 was not going to be implemented as all of the landowners had credibly argued that the terms were no longer economically viable.
During public consultation for the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014, a number of submissions relating to the Palmview Structure Plan were received from the developers and the community. As a consequence of changes to the Sustainable Planning Act 2009, the changes proposed in these submissions could only be dealt with through a planning scheme amendment to the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme after it had been adopted. These are the amendments which have now been addressed through a public notification period. The Sippy Downs and District Community Association, which has been involved in the planning of the Palmview development since 2009, has declared its support for council and the amended infrastructure agreement, as well as the subsequent proposed planning scheme amendments “as they favourably address the key concerns of the community”.
The Palmview Structure Plan maintains many sustainability provisions, including creating an efficient land use pattern and providing public transport, cycle and pedestrian networks. Buildings will include passive solar design principles. The landscape design will incorporate significant native vegetation and large shade trees in private and public spaces, and most dwellings will be located within 500 metres of a park to help create a healthy community. In addition, the development is required to meet the sustainable design code of the Planning Scheme, which requires it to take advantage of local climate and environmental conditions to: – optimise its energy efficiency; – minimise reliance on nonrenewable energy sources; – and facilitate and promote alternative energy supply through renewable energy sources. While the specific target for affordable
housing has been removed because it related to the now lapsed Housing Affordability Fund agreement, providing affordable housing and ensuring affordable living are still outcomes which are to be demonstrated by the developers. They are to do this by ensuring there is a diversity of housing choice, that the community has access to a range of shopping, local employment and services, and through sustainable transport. Ecologically significant areas within the Palmview Structure Plan Area that were protected under the current Structure Plan are protected under the amended Structure Plan. While the proposed greenlinks have been removed at the request of the community and the developers, the landowners/developers are still required to provide $2 million towards a local bus service from the start of development. We look forward to construction at Palmview beginning in the middle of 2016.

BLAST FROM THE PAST Promoters are promising a memorable night of Aussie rock when James Reyne hits the road with rock band Moving Pictures to deliver the ultimate summer double bill. If you were a music fan in Australia in the 1980s and ‘90s, these two names were impossible to avoid. Both acts dominated the charts with multiplatinum albums and sold-out tours. In December, their latest tour will bring the performers to the Coast with Reyne set to play his solo smashes including all of his Aussie Crawl hits. The concert is at Aussie World on December 27. Tickets are on sale now. Visit ticketmaster.com.au.

DUO TO PLAY HITS MELT IN THE MOUTH DISH
Mangoes are the flavour of summer and as the weather warms up, it will star on plates around the Coast. Mango is the perfect addition to a refreshing salad or served chargrilled with barbecued lamb. Mooloolaba Surf Club has created a delicious dish for the month of November – chargrilled salmon fillet with mango salsa. It’s served with a glass of Hollick The Bard sauvignon blanc or cabernet sauvignon and costs $27.50. The Boathouse Restaurant is open seven days a week from 7am for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

– like Bradman versus Tendulkar; Beethoven versus Beatles; Kitty Hawk versus Concorde. Yet this ultimate F-Type – boasting more power and more performance than any Jaguar in history, at least makes it a worthwhile discussion. It’s a fearsome piece of kit – the fastest and fittest machine ever to wear the leaping cat logo. The F-Type R’s supercharged V8 engine pumps out a mammoth 404 kilowatts – double the 203-kilowatt output of the most powerful E-Type, the V12 version built between 1971 and 1975. Earlier E-Types, with smaller 3.8-litre and 4.2-litre V8s, enjoyed even less power. Yet back in 1961, when those models first emerged, they were other-worldly, with a zero to sixty (100 kilometres/per hour) time of under seven seconds – giving rise to an astonishing top speed of 150 miles per hour (240 kilometres per hour). The F-Type, by contrast, is limited to a top-speed of 300 kilometres per hour – and will reach the 100 kilometre-per-hour speed limit in a blurry 4.1 seconds. Where the E-Type boasted such technological advances as monocoque construction, disc brakes and rack and continued page 38>

EST. Jaguar. Ever. Three little words. One very big statement. Yet this car – the Jaguar F-Type R AWD – might just be worthy of that title. A Jag for the ages, you could say. It’s been half a lifetime since Jaguar
built a car this good, this beautiful and this exciting. That, of course, was the iconic E-Type – built when Jaguar was at its romantic zenith, a car that established the very DNA of this grand British brand. The modern F-Type – which Jaguar bills as the first ‘true sports car’ they’ve created since those halcyon days – is
undoubtedly the spiritual successor. And the F-Type R – complete with a newly-arrived all-wheel-drive system and the performance of a V8 Supercar – is surely the loftiest expression of it. So could it be the best Jag of all time? Well, it’s one of those arguments impossible to resolve across generations

MOTORING
<from page 36 pinion steering, the F-Type is a virtual rolling electronics shop with Braking Torque Vectoring, Intelligent Driveline Dynamics and electric steering. Perhaps most central to the legend of the E-Type, though, was the ethereal, timeless design that, even today, makes it one of the most beautiful pieces of automotive sculpture ever seen. It will be decades before we know whether the F-Type measures up to that standard – but it’s a big ask, despite the formidable efforts of uber-designer Ian Callum. It’s certainly beautiful to look at, and equally beautiful to drive. So enough of the comparisons. Exactly what does your $261,370 (plus onroad costs) get you in this fetching two-door, two-seat Jag? Well, in addition to the ballistic acceleration (also available in the F-Type R coupe, a steal at $226-grand), you also get all-wheel-drive – meaning the F-Type literally sticks to the road. And, in the case of our test machine, all that cash also gets you a folding cloth roof to let in the sunshine and the glorious scowl of that fabulous V8. It’s a soundtrack to humble the Jag’s concert-quality audio system. Of course, Australia’s strict road rules
balls, instead of golf clubs. We took the Jag on a weekend away and made the brave decision to remove the spare tyre so we could take a change of clothes. A trip to the supermarket generally means loading up the front passenger seat. Personally, I’d forgo the drop-top for the better-looking coupe version and spend the extra $19,000
Overseas model mean you’ll rarely do more than scratch the surface of this car’s prodigious power and handling abilties. You could spend half as much ($120k) on the ‘standard’ F-Type, with its more sensible supercharged V6 engine and the justreleased option of a six-speed manual transmission – and rarely want for more. Yet if money is no object, why not go for this all-out, full-fat, double-caffeine, two spoons of sugar version? There’s nothing even vaguely modest or apologetic about this machine. And nothing vaguely practical, either. The F-Type’s boot is laughable. Think handbag, rather than overnight bag. Golf
on roof racks. No, it’s not a sensible car. Nor is it vaguely meant to be. But when you get right down to it, who cares? Those forking out a quarter of a million for a two-seater with a barking exhaust and pulverising, almost frightening acceleration are hardly going to make this their everyday drive. No, it will spend much of its time waiting for those look-at-me moments for which this car was designed. Just like the E-Type did all those years ago. Can this car become an all-time classic? Only time will tell.
JAGUAR F-TYPE R AWD HOW BIG? It’s a surprisingly substantial machine, despite its two-seat configuration and complete lack of boot space. HOW FAST? Blindingly. The legal speed limit arrives in just 4.1 seconds of sound and fury – and it will roar all the way to 300km/h before an electronic limiter intrudes on the fun. HOW THIRSTY? Despite the insane outputs of its supercharged 5-litre V8, it still manages an average consumption of 11.3L/100km. On an extended trip, with the eight-speed automatic ticking over, it slips into single digits. HOW MUCH? Well, if you have to ask you probably can’t afford it. But for the record it will cost you $261,370. With onroads that means precious little change out of $300k.

HOME WITH A GLITZY HISTORY
Cary Grant and Jean Harlow once partied on the site earmarked for Mooloolaba’s last waterfront development. Words: Candice Holznagel

he fairy floss pink house sitting on 63 River Esplanade, Mooloolaba is unassuming enough. Yet many are unaware of its 100-year history and of the stories and lives lived out behind those walls. The former fishing shack sits on prime property among high rise apartment blocks that span the length of the highly sought-after River Esplanade location. Largely due to its prime location and striking colour, the house has become somewhat of an iconic building known as the ‘Pink House’. The house was first owned by automotive industry heavyweight Fred Eager. Fred was the son of American businessman Edward Eager, who became the Australian representative of the Overland Company. The family was responsible for bringing General Motors and Holden to Australia and in 2011, it was reported that it owned the second largest motor vehicle dealership in Australia, employing almost 3000 people. Under Eager’s ownership, the Pink House was home to many lavish celebrity parties and frequented by Hollywood stars including Cary Grant, Jean Harlow and Errol Flynn. Throughout the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, Eager welcomed these celebrities, family and friends to the Mooloolaba home not only for parties, but for fishing expeditions. The residence was known as Tangalooma – a name shared by Eager’s yacht and believed to come from the local indigenous language meaning where fish meet. When Eager died in 1949, the house 40 My Weekly Preview | November 6, 2015

• Only four units in complex • Each unit averages 526m2 in size • 180-degree waterfront views • Individual private lifts • Private marina berths • Four-car basement parking • Spa, gym and pool • Balconies was passed on to a family friend. Through the years it has exchanged hands numerous times, but never went under the hammer until last year. The house will be relocated to a property in Esk, while the site transforms into one of the Coast’s most luxurious residential addresses. Next Property Group owner Loren Wimhurst, who is marketing and selling the all-new Tangalooma Residence ‘sky homes’, says it is the last waterfront development site in Mooloolaba. “Tangalooma was sold to Laz Dzufer of Nexus Building Group who has since extensively researched luxury living around the country and has, alongside award-winning architect Brad Read of
Artist’s impression of the interior Brad Read Design Group, designed the most exclusive residential development,’’ she says. “The level of luxury and standard of design is unprecedented on the Sunshine Coast.” The Tangalooma Residence project was revealed to the public last Thursday. With only four apartments to be developed, it is expected to be hotly contested property. “Tangalooma Residence offers spectacular 180-degree waterfront views from the four individual sky homes – one
per level with each level boasting an average floor size of 526 metres squared,’’ Wimhurst says. “Owners of the Tangalooma Residences will receive access to individual lifts for each floor, an exquisite entertaining area, fully appointed gym, spa and pool; secure basement parking and exclusive marina berths. “No expense has been spared in the development of the Tangalooma Residences.” Next is taking expressions of interest until 5pm on December 8.

AUCTION THE HOME THAT THINKS IT’S A 6 STAR ‘PENTHOUSE’! 11 Mayfair Lane, Buderim As agents, we certainly get the privilege of viewing some spectacular homes. Some homes are simply beyond compare and mere words just don’t seem to do justice. 11 Mayfair Lane is definitely one of these homes. In fact it’s more like a 6 star ‘penthouse’ without the Body Corporate fees and you actually own the land! 1050m2 of land, in fact. When you arrive at the home and push the electronic buzzer to enter from street level, you get a small hint you’re in for something very special. Inside does not disappoint! It’s not often I would describe a home as ‘perfect’, however 11 Mayfair Lane personifies this word ‘perfectly’! There is only one way to truly appreciate this property, and that’s to view it, or buy it and enjoy and appreciate it forever. Call Craig Porter now for your viewing and complete list of features.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
The surf ng situation is pretty dire, so much in fact that our regular scribe has f own out to Sumatra in a desperate attempt to get some waves. You can’t blame him! The week ahead looks average. Head to the southern end to avoid the northerlies. Tomorrow (Saturday) may provide a glimmer of hope with some offshore action predicted early in the day. But Sumatra’s probably a better bet.
FISHING REPORT
with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Trevally are taking live bait and lures around the Maroochy motorway bridge pylons and at Petrie Creek mouth with top or bottom of the tide the only times they feed. You can get monster whiting on yabbies around Goat Island on the rising tide. Mud crabs are up in most creeks. More rain would help f ush the creeks and rivers which in turn stimulates the f sh and crabs. SURF: Flathead are working along the shallow gutters from Maroochy North Shore to Mudjimba - use pillies or strip baits, slowly retrieved. You can f nd whiting along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide. OFFSHORE: You can get mixed reef f sh from The Blinker to The Gneerings using squid. Snapper, pearlies, amberjack and rosy job f sh are on the Barwon Banks. Pillies and mullet f llet are the best baits, plastics are also working a treat. FRESHWATER: Both Boondooma and Joh’s Dam are returning bass on spinner baits and live shrimps, but you must f nd where they are schooling. Somerset is best for golden perch, bass and jew on baits and deep divers. Borumba Dam is best for saratoga on f y. What a buzz! Throw in bass and golden perch and you’ve got f shing heaven. Lake Macdonald, a quiet spot for a bit of the same.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Are you stuck in a relationship rut? The new moon and Mercury urge you to communicate with your partner in new ways. Single bulls – don’t be seduced by powerful pecs or a bulging bank balance. Look for lasting love with someone with similar goals and values.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You’re in the mood for fun and entertainment early in the week! But, in order to capitalise on your energy surge [and avoid making mistakes], some planning is required. There’s no substitute for thorough research and paying close attention to details.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Wednesday night’s new moon promises a period of nurturing friendships. Creativity is high, so tap into the muse within. With Venus and Mars visiting your domestic zone, strive to be more proactive about a current family problem.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Family life looks promising as the new moon and Mercury signal fun, learning and fresh beginnings in your lion’s den. Tuesday and Wednesday are fortuitous for financial matters, when you find creative and proactive ways to boost your bank balance.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With Jupiter transiting your sign, it’s time to be bold as you face your fears, follow your dreams, and take a leap into your preferred future. Venus and Mars promise an increase in cash flow… but you may cancel that out by indulging in a shopping spree!
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Your Libran passion for fashion and addiction to romance are both magnified this week, as Venus and Mars shift into your sign. So it’s a wonderful week to attend a fashion show, buy a fabulous new outfit, have a romantic rendezvous with your partner, or fall in love.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The new moon and Mercury light up your sign, which signals a brand new chapter in your life – especially involving travel or education. It’s also the best week of the year to update your physical appearance via a revamped wardrobe, hairstyle, diet or fitness routine.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] A lucky opportunity [of a financial or professional nature] is heading your way soon – but you must grab it, otherwise it will pass you by. Avoid the temptation to be a dithering dilettante! Confidence, consistence and peer support are the keys to success.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Are you being super stubborn about a professional matter? The stars encourage you to balance being proactive and productive with being calm and cooperative. A combination of research and old-fashioned intuition will help you come up with a practical solution.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Superficialities won’t do this week! A problem requires a focused and forensic approach, as you get to the bottom of what’s really going on [and you may have to ditch a project and start from scratch]. But, don’t sit around worrying about where you are heading.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] The new moon activates your adventure zone. Many Pisceans are keen to travel, and the best time to take a holiday is between now and January 4. So start planning and booking ASAP! But, be careful how you communicate with others on Friday, as confusion is in the air.

THE LAST WORD
BIG BROTHER BROUGH
Mal Brough’s ‘Boost the Bruce’ billboard is not only creepy, it’s totally unnecessary, writes Richard O’Leary.
I
’m not a big fan of politicians on billboards at the best of times, they always remind me of those portraits of Big Brother in George Orwell’s novel 1984. “The blackmoustachio’d face gazed down from every commanding corner. There was one on the house-front immediately opposite. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said.” Watching me recently, and anybody else who uses the Sunshine Motorway is a larger than life Member for Fisher Mal Brough, whose image has been plastered to a billboard calling for all of us to help him to Boost the Bruce (I thought the new PM had banned three-word slogans). Its message is simple – sign a petition to get Federal Government funding to upgrade the Bruce Highway, including expanding and flood-proofing the stretch from Caboolture to Caloundra.
If the cash is secured you can claim full credit for organising the community campaign that got it over the line. But the jig is up. So please, come down from the billboard, dismount from your high horse and elbow your way into the Prime Minister’s office, and on the way pay a visit to the Minister for Infrastructure. Is it just me who thinks this when driving past the billboard each day? Maybe I’m just cranky about being told what to do by a politician on my way home from work? Am I mad to think my federal representative should be breaking down doors to get what’s best for the region without needing my signature on a petition? What was it Winston said in 1984? “Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one.” roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
Brough says the people of the Sunshine Coast need to help him to deliver this project by sending a clear message to Canberra. It’s the same reasoning put forward by the other federal members whose seats fall into the target area for the highway upgrade. Of course, this is absolute nonsense. Unless the Commonwealth’s allocation of money for public works is now run along the same lines as X-Factor? I could understand this approach from politicians in Opposition – but these guys are in government – they are part of the team that makes the decisions. Which leads me to a simple conclusion – this is BS. A Brough Stunt. In many ways, it is perfect politics. If the funding isn’t forthcoming you can always blame the electorate – simply not enough people signed the petition.
