hen I was a kid, getting sunburnt was as much a part of summer as cricket, pools and ice blocks. I remember grimacing in pain each time I rolled over in bed with a badly burnt back, and peeling off skin for weeks on end. These days, we’re more aware of the dangers of skin cancer and try to protect ourselves from the sun. But what do you do when questions are raised about the safety of sunscreens? That’s this week’s cover story. Also this week, you get to have a quick chat with one of the Coast’s best known photographers, meet the woman who is trying to build a bridge between the Sunshine Coast and Israel (an economic one at least), and go puma spotting in Patagonia. And with less than a month to Christmas, My Weekly Preview in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council, is providing you with a free festive season liftout – the ultimate guide to shopping, carols, church services and New Year’s events.

QUICK CHAT
STAYING FOCUSED
Photographer Greg Gardner spends his days capturing the Sunshine Coast in the best possible light. FIRST JOB?
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
An after school job at a printing company when I was 13 . It was here that I learnt about colours and printing, which I suppose was the first introduction to visual arts. I remember those days very clearly as I use to get nose bleeds due to the strong smell of the solvent inks used. At 17, I started working for a commercial photographer as a full-time assistant and spent many hours in the dark room processing film and printing. I feel lucky to have grown in that era, as it makes me even more appreciative of today’s digital photography.
Take fluoride out the water and give the community a choice.
ANY BIG TURNING POINTS IN YOUR LIFE? A turning point in the photographic industry was having seen the change over from film to digital and getting my first digital camera was a huge turning point in respect to what could be achieved on a visual platform. The fact that a client can have a subject photographed and literally have it sent around the world within seconds is quite an achievement. My first digital SLR camera bought in 2000 was a 3.25 megapixel sensor and now 15 years later, I am using a 50 megapixel camera.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? We are constantly shooting real estate through the week. I’m really lucky in my job where I get to see some of the Sunshine Coast’s most amazing homes. The talent of Sunshine Coast architects, designers and builders on houses that I have photographed over the last 18 years is phenomenal.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My wife Michelle and two daughters Saffron 15 and Paige 12. Being surrounded by women has taught me a lot, yet I have learnt nothing. The only other male in the family is a six-year-old Jack Russell called Tommy (I feel he has learnt more about women than I).
FIRST CAR? 180B Datsun. It had the white vinyl roof and lovely cream vinyl seating that would burn the top layer off your skin when you sat in it on a sunny day.
FAVOURITE BOOK? The Power of Now – By Eckhart Tolle.
FAVOURITE SONG? Park Life By Blur, brings back some great memories of my time in London where I lived for a few years in my early 20s, and met my beautiful wife. Good times!
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? By my mum – stop that or you’ll go blind.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Mum lied, you won’t go blind.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Twenty years. I moved to the Sunshine Coast, after meeting Michelle who lived in Caloundra, so practically a local some would say.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? After years living in different locations around the world, I now have come to the conclusion the Sunshine Coast is the best place on earth.
FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST? Anywhere in and around Caloundra, we have south, east, north facing beaches, even west if you count inside Bribie. I love the retro feel of Bulcock Street.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? Simply to the beach. Shelly, Dicky, Moffat and Kings Beach, inside Bribie in the passage is just magical, we are very lucky.
Every time I take a photograph and produce a good image for the client is an achievement that I am proud of. From capturing the emotions of a couple’s wedding day to a simple product in the studio, I strive to get the best that is possible. I’m proud that I can make people who are terrified of having their photo taken relaxed and at ease. I can be a bit cheeky just to get a laugh or a smile, but sometimes I open my mouth and out comes something a tad inappropriate, which unfortunately doesn’t always work as I found out photographing Quentin Bryce at a private girls college a while ago. Whoops.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Living and growing up in New Zealand, one of my biggest regrets is that I never played for the All Blacks. If I was just a little bit faster and a bit stronger, was a little bit taller and had a little bit more talent.
NRL OR AFL? NRL, Broncos. I had played rugby union all my life until I visited the Caloundra Sharks ground soon after I moved here. I was welcomed by a player/captain by the name of Tim Dwyer, did a season with the Sharks Reserves and realised that all those years I thought I was fit playing union were a lie. Three concussions and a broken collarbone later, I decided rugby league was best in front of the TV.

COVER STORY
IN A LATHER
How do you make sense of conflicting information about sunscreens and make the right choice for your family? Words: Richard O’Leary
Do the ingredients in sunscreens cause more harm than good? Are they depriving us of vitamin D?
H
undreds of school leavers gallop towards the glittering blue waters of Mooloolaba Beach on a shiny spring day, their momentum slowed only momentarily as they reach the water and adjust their gait to the small waves that greet them. They huddle together, uniforms soaked, shrill screams sounding out across the sea and sand. Other beachgoers pause briefly to watch the spectacle before going back to the business of enjoying a day in the sun. It’s just after 9.30 in the morning and besides those students wearing their school tunics and shorts and shirts most of the people are in swimmers; one pieces, bikinis and boardies as far as the eye can see. Visitors and locals alike lie on towels unfurled like dozens of mismatched flags on the already hot sand. A perfect snapshot of a hot Aussie day. But there’s danger lurking beneath the idyllic beach scene. Skin cancer will kill more than 2000 Australians this year. On any given weekend, it’s estimated about 300,000 adults end up with seared skin – almost the entire Sunshine Coast population. It’s frightening considering nearly all skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun. There were 11,570 skin cancer cases diagnosed in 2011. One in 14 men and one in 23 women are diagnosed with melanoma before the age of 85, while the Medical Journal of Australia says the total number of non-melanoma skin cancers increased from 412,493 in 1997 to 767,347 in 2012

and predicts this year the number of cases could top 930,000. The Cancer Council has been on the front line in the fight to bring these numbers down. It recommends you slip on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30-plus or higher, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on some sunglasses. But at Mooloolaba Beach, with the temperature heading toward 30 degrees, most people are adopting just a few of these suggestions.
for Christmas. “Sunscreen on my legs and zinc for the face. I’m trying to get a bit of a tan actually. Just to have a nice summer look.” The well-tanned Margaret Norton, is a sixty-year old from Mooloolaba. “I’ve got a 50-plus (sunscreen) and wear a hat. I don’t burn, I’ve got olive skin so I’m very fortunate.” The one thing most of these people have in common is some sort of strategy to protect themselves from the sun – and
“There’s a lot of debate within the science community about whether nanoparticles in sunscreens are safe” Louise Sales Twenty-eight year old local Karen Glover will spend an hour at the beach. “I only usually stay out here for an hour. Just get some vitamin D. I just wear sunscreen, and I never get burnt.” Brad Williams also from Mooloolaba will spend most of the day at the beach. “I wear sunscreen – slip, slop, slap. I have to wear sunscreen anyway to protect my tattoos.” Eighteen-year-old Britt Nash from Brisbane is trying to get some colour
for many that consists of sunscreen as the first and last line of defence. Which is why recent questions about the safety of the sunscreens themselves have some consumers concerned and confused. The main questions being asked are: Do the ingredients in sunscreens, which are used to reduce the amount of the damaging ultra-violet light we are exposed to, cause more harm than good? And even if they do their job safely, are they depriving us of much-needed vitamin D,
the so-called ‘sunshine vitamin’? To answer these questions you first have to look at the different type of sunscreens: chemical and physical. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV light while physical sunscreens mainly reflect it. The US-based consumer advocate Environmental Working Group argues the ingredients in chemical sunscreens can include endocrine disrupters such as oxybenzone and octinoxate (octyl methoxycinnamate) which can release free radicals into the body and potentially lead to cancer. The alternative is physical sunscreens, such as the usually white coloured zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These can feel greasy and give the skin a white sheen, but they do the job. To satisfy our vanity, new technology now allows us to choose physical sunscreens that feel more lightweight and are easier on the eye, but there is a catch. Louise Sales from Friends of the Earth, an Australian advocate group says the nanoparticles used to make more ‘people-friendly’ physical sunscreens come with a cost. “There’s evidence that nanoparticles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide can potentially go through the skin and produce free radicals and the former head of the CSIRO’s Nanosafety group Maxine McCall warned that as a worst case scenario, the use of nanoparticles in sunscreen could actually increase the risk of skin cancer.” myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY
“There’s still a lot of debate within the science community about whether nanoparticles in sunscreens are safe or not and we think there shouldn’t be products on supermarket shelves until they’re guaranteed to be safe.” “Back in 2004 the UK Royal Society actually looked at the use of nanotechnology in a number of consumer products and came to the conclusion that nanoparticles behave in a way like new chemicals and they need to be assessed as new chemicals and they shouldn’t be used in consumer products until they’ve been proven safe. “Unfortunately, this is over ten years later and our regulators still aren’t beginning to put in place basic safety testing systems for these new chemicals, which we think is appalling and there should be a moratorium on the use of nanoparticles in consumer products until they’ve undergone basic safety testing.” Some argue sunscreens can be too effective, depriving Australians of their daily dose of Vitamin D. A 2012 study, the biggest undertaken into vitamin D levels in Australia, measured 24,000 people over two years and found 58 per cent of Australians are deficient in the vitamin. The author of the study, Professor Steven Boyages from the University of Sydney, says those results may be explained by the fact more Australian are protecting themselves against the sun and staying indoors for longer each day. But sunscreen is not to blame, according to the director of the Centre for Research Excellence in Sun and Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Professor Michael Kimlin. “We’ve done numerous studies within my lab and we’ve published this in international peer reviewed journals time and time again. People in our studies who have the highest vitamin D levels are people who use sunscreen regularly. The use of sunscreen does not inhibit the production of vitamin D.” “There was a study done in the US
myweeklypreview.com.au
13.indd 1
where a professor took four or five medical students and put them into a tanning bed. But what he did, he then slathered sunscreen on, at an extraordinarily high level and when he put his people into artificial UV, using an artificial amount of sunscreen on them, they had trouble making vitamin D. But that study has never been replicated.” “In the real world, where we did our experiment, the opposite is true, people
Professor Michael Kimlin who use sunscreen have the highest levels of vitamin D. It’s because we never get 100 per cent coverage with sunscreen when we apply it.” Kimlin says sunscreen should only ever be part of a broader sun protection strategy – but urges caution against those who say sunscreen should be dropped altogether due to concerns about its ingredients. “It comes back to dose versus risk. I’ve yet to see beyond an animal model in a laboratory in the real world that there is such an effect on humans. There’s so many other endocrine disruptors in the environment that have a far greater dose than this. And the risk of developing cancers of the skin probably outweighs the small risk that may or may not be present.” “There’s been some studies showing that the zinc does potentially enter the bloodstream, but the concentration that was in the blood was one-ten-thousandth the normal concentration of normal zinc
in our blood. So the resulting outcome was no significant impact on our health.” “If they’re [consumers] are worried about nanoparticles, there are lots of other products available on the market that can still protect their skin that don’t have nanoparticles. Find something that suits your family, and use it because the sun is so bloody strong.” So what sunscreen does a professor who specialises in sun and health use? In the Kimlin family cupboard there’s a home brand sunscreen from one of the major supermarket chains which is non-organic, and doesn’t contain nanoparticles or titanium dioxide. “But we (our family don’t place a high importance on sunscreen because it’s the last line of defence – what we do place a lot of importance on is trying to stay in the shade, trying to wear protective clothing and wear hats. Sunscreen is just a supplement.” Back at Mooloolaba Beach, as the sun begins the descent for its daily dive below the horizon – the damage it has done to the skin of those people soaking up its rays is difficult to determine. But those who have slipped, slopped, slapped, slid and sought shade, have given themselves the best possible chance to see many more sunsets.
ORGANIC SUNSCREENS There are currently no certified organic sunscreens for full body use in Australia. However, some natural sunscreens use zinc oxide as the active ingredient and contain certified organic ingredients. These may be more suitable for those with sensitive skin and include Eco logical, Wotnot, Soleo and UV Natural. Zinc oxide is the only active ingredient in sunscreens with the potential for organic certification, but as these sunscreens contain 15 to 25 per cent zinc, they are ineligible for full organic certification.
MYTHS ABOUT SKIN CANCER 1. You will see it and it is easy to treat. FALSE. Skin cancer treatment can be much more serious than having a lesion ‘burnt off’. It can include surgery, chemotherapy and can result in permanent scarring. Skin cancer can also metastasise and spread to other parts of your body. 2. All skin cancers are the same. False: Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are by far the most common and least dangerous form of skin cancer, while squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are less common, but can spread to other parts of the body if they aren’t treated. Melanomas are less common still, but far more likely to kill. 3. You can’t get burnt on a cold or cloudy day. False: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, not heat, is the major cause of sunburn. 4. People with olive skin are not at risk of skin cancer. FALSE. Regardless of skin type, if you spent your childhood in the sun without adequate protection you are at higher risk of developing skin cancer. 5. If your cosmetics contain sunscreen you do not need to use sunscreen. FALSE. You should wear sunscreen under your makeup if you’re going to be in the sun. 6. Only sunbathers get skin cancer. FALSE. You can be exposed to high levels of UV radiation during all sorts of activities. Source: Cancer Council

How did you get into Chiropractic? My family was always very health conscious and often went to the Chiropractor. I was a mad keen sportsperson growing up, (Still am) and I found Chiropractic to really help me personally. What made you set up on the Sunshine Coast? We were living and working in London and wanted to start our Family. We wanted to raise our Kids in a healthy, outdoors environment, close to both the ocean and the bush. The Sunny coast ticked all the boxes. What is the best advice someone ever gave you? Be kind to everyone and never lie. Both make life less complicated. Favourite part of the coast? I am such a “Waterboy” so any beach or taking the boat down the river. I am learning wakeboarding at the moment and want to master a flip. This often means I need to see a Chiropractor. If you could live anywhere in the world other than the Sunshine Coast, where would you chose? I lived in Europe for 3 years and loved it. The history, the culture, the proximity to other countries and adventures was fantastic. What is your hidden talent? Not many people know I play the clarinet and saxophone Favourite food? Roast Duck with foie gras and a glass of Pinot Noir, or anything from the sea. I love all seafood. Why $21 for a full examination? I believe everyone deserves to be Vibrantly Healthy and this includes a healthy spine and nervous system. We decided to make our New patient fee just $21 to make it easy for people to come in and find out if we can help. This is not a special or introductory offer. No catches or time limit. This is our full consultation and thorough examination, just not the high price tag. $21 for 21 years of experience.

100,000
Coast residents are being urged to bring some joy to those residents who are doing it tough this festive season by supporting the Salvation Army. Each year, almost 100,000 Australians turn to The Salvos for help during the Christmas season and spokesperson Dr Bruce Redman says the organisation relies on people’s generosity. Bunnings Warehouse has joined forces with the Salvos to host a range of fundraising activities in store. People can also donate through the annual Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal by placing a gift under a tree at any store.
DICKY BEACH MAKEOVER
Dicky Beach is in line for a makeover and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to provide input into the landscape plan. Councillor Tim Dwyer says the project aims to retain the area’s identity. The plan will outline future improvements and identify interpretive elements to remember the SS Dicky wreck, which was removed earlier this year. Improvement work will begin next month however a draft plan will be released in 2016 following community input.

NEW ROADWORK BEGINS Construction of the Bells Creek Arterial Road is one step closer, with Stockland last week turning the first sod on the site. The arterial road will be developed in three stages during the next 10 years, with the first stage comprising a 2.8-kilometre two-lane road extending south from the Caloundra Road roundabout. It will provide motorists with access to the future Caloundra South development, Aura. The road will also provide relief for residents of Bellvista and Bells Creek by taking pressure off the one existing road, Bellvista Boulevard.
91,000 Sunshine Coast Airport continues to break records with the business experiencing its busiest October in history. More than 91,000 passengers flew in and out of the Coast. The figure was the second highest on record, finishing behind January 2009 when 92,722 travellers used the airport. The latest figures follow news the airport tallied more than 250,000 passengers in the first three months of the financial year.
UBER ARRIVES ON COAST
Controversial ride-share app UberX is now available on the Sunshine Coast despite the state government declaring it illegal. Passengers can request an Uber driver through a smartphone app, which uses private drivers instead of licensed taxi drivers. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has called for a joint national solution to address the Uber situation, claiming that taxi companies were disadvantaged.
FUNDING FOR OUR CBD The new Federal Minister for Cities and the Built Environment Jamie Briggs says the Sunshine Coast has a unique opportunity to set the standard for smart cities as it builds the region’s new CBD on a greenfield site at Maroochydore and he’s invited the Sunshine Coast Council to apply for federal funding and support. The comments follow the Minister’s tour of the region at the request of the LNP candidate for Fairfax Ted O’Brien.

TRAVEL
the popular trail is at risk of becoming overcrowded. Determined to get off the beaten track, I’m here to explore the area’s forgotten trails, hidden caves and rarely used glacial waterways. Standing outside the park at sunrise, in the grounds of the Estancia Cerro Guido, I watch the pink-tipped granite towers of the Paine massif emerge fleetingly from the clouds. A metal sign clatters urgently as wind rages across the endless, empty plains, where I imagine several hundred mylodons could have roamed. I barely exchange a word with my horse-riding guide as we tackle the rugged trail up to Sierra Baguales, where the blocky mountain ridge resembles a lower set of molars. Beneath us, yellow lady’s slipper orchids, buttercups and mounds of prickly hard grass, affectionately known as ‘mother-in-law cushions’, carpet the landscape. Although pumas are widespread in Patagonia, they are often difficult to track in summer months. When I reach the campsite at Laguna Azul, I’m excited to hear there have been sightings in the area. Only two tents are pitched at the site, where strong gusts cause water from the lagoon to lap the shore like ocean waves.

owering two and a half metres above me, the giant sloth emerging from the shadows of a cave below the Cerro Benitez would be terrifying if it wasn’t carved from stone. Had I been standing here 14,000 years ago, the mylodon might have been a real
threat, but now, this life-size statue is simply a reminder of the enormous creatures that once roamed Patagonia’s fittingly large-scale landscapes. Vast grass plains, inhospitable ice fields and magnificent mountain ranges characterise this region, which straddles Chile and Argentina, and slopes towards
the end of the earth. It’s also home to one of South America’s most popular tourist attractions, the Torres del Paine National Park, where thousands of people come each year, from October to March, to complete the five-day W trek. But with no limit on visitor numbers,

It’s a very different story when I enter the park, and pitch my tent at the busy Torres campsite, where the majority of people are planning to set off on the W trek. As a train of backpackers with walking poles snakes towards the towers, now barely visible in the clouds, my guide, Nico, and I take a different path, through calafate bushes and lenga forest, to the top of neighbouring Cerro Paine Chico. “There’s a new route I’ve been thinking about for some time,” he says, pointing to a faint thread etched along one of the towers. My pace quickens when we hear news of a possible puma sighting close to the Hotel Las Torres. Most trekkers are more fixed on reaching their campsite for the night, but I’m determined to lay eyes on the elusive mountain lion while there’s still a glimmer of daylight. Resting in the scrub, close to Nordenskjold Lake, the muscular tawny cat is remarkably close to the trail. Raising alarm, two enormous tucuquere owls puff out their feathers and screech insistently from the branches of nearby trees. Sensing our approach, the puma shifts slowly uphill, hunching his shoulders as he stalks and successfully pounces on a
hare, then disappears into the bushes. Putting my hiking boots to one side, I decide to leave the park by a different means. Wearing a heavy dry suit, I set off in a sea kayak along the Serrano River towards the neighbouring Bernardo O’Higgins Park. As strong gusts create spindrifts on the water and the current becomes overpowering, I’m forced to ask my guide, Will, a 23-year old Scot, for help. Exhausted and bedraggled, I make it to our wild camping spot for the night, and stumble up a hill for a view of the Tyndall Glacier. Will tells me the nearest person is 40 kilometres away, a hermit gaucho who lives in the park.
Scenic view of Punta Arenas
Cerro Torre in Argentina After a cold and rainy night, my spirits are lifted as we kayak towards the Serrano Glacier, weaving through an obstacle course of ice floes. A passenger ferry carries us and the kayaks for the remaining journey back to the town of Puerto Natales, and Will tells me of his plan to one day jump off the boat in a dry suit, swim ashore and trek across the mountains, sleeping in snow holes. Tracing the route line with his index finger, he’s already imagining the possibilities for adventure. Looking at the same snow-covered, jagged ridgeline, all I can see is difficulty,
discomfort and potential danger. But I do also recognise its beauty. That’s one view every visitor to Patagonia – no matter where they might be standing – can share. Sarah Marshall was a guest of Swoop Patagonia.

WHAT CAN ISRAEL TEACH US? Madalene Hall was the only Sunshine Coast delegate to participate in a recent trade mission to Israel and says Australia, and the Sunshine Coast, can learn a lot from the ‘startup nation’. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

adalene Hall of Twin Waters waved the flag for the Sunshine Coast on a recent trade mission to Israel, which she described as one of the highlights of her life. The marketing director was the only Sunshine Coast representative in a delegation of 46 led by Assistant Miniser for Innovation, Wyatt Roy, and she has returned home buzzing with inspiration. The two-week trip followed Hall’s first trade mission to China last year, where she was able to put her Mandarin skills to good use. With Israel keen to explore trade opportunities with China, Hall says a strategic alliance could be developed between the three countries. “I thought, yep, I can see a triangular formation between Israel, China and Australia, an opportunity with technology and innovation and startups. The Sunshine Coast is an agricultural hub and we could collaborate with countries like Israel – which is known as the startup nation – using their technology to streamline and improve. “Israel was very interested in Australia because they feel we’re similar to them – a desert country. They see us as the gateway to China. If we collaborate and share technology and innovation between Israel and Australia, if we set up manufacturing facilities in Australia and export to China, what a wonderful collaboration between the three countries. We’re ahead of Israel, having a
long-term relationship with the Asian region and they see that as a massive opportunity.” Hall said Australia could take a leaf out of Israel’s book in its commitment to startups, innovation and technology. “I loved it, I want to go back. I want to be part of that energised, inspirational, innovative culture. It’s not a country that’s naturally resourced like Australia, so they looked towards their people. What’s different in Israel is their government, defence and education system are all
pulling together with industry to progress their nation going forward. They have an amazing culture of giving it a go. It’s okay to fail, but get back up and try again. They don’t have the ‘she’ll be right’ aspect. “They are very impatient and just want to get on with it. They look for a global problem and then come up with a global solution. They’ve targeted the USA in the tech and medical space. They sell to big economies with big problems. That’s what has transformed their country.” One example is the Cardioband technology, which repairs the most common forms of mitral heart valve conditions, effectively replacing the need for open heart surgery. The device was recently acquired from an Israeli startup by a US company for an estimated $1 billion. “The other interesting part is the female space,” she says. “These women entrepreneurs have created female coworking spaces, incubators and accelerators, to encourage women in the startup space. “On the Coast we’ve got the innovation centre and some shared coworking spaces, but I think we’re about two years behind. We need more of industry, government and the education sectors getting together to collaborate. If we can all pool together, it’s going to be better for our economy. It’s going to progress us. “We’ve got phenomenal successes but we don’t talk well enough together to collaborate and commercialise it. Israel is very good at commercialising their inventions.”

MY LIFE
HEARING LOSS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
FEELING LIKE PUFF DADDY? Food allergens, stress, alcohol, sugar and lack of exercise can all contribute to fluid retention, writes Jodi Chapman.
M
aking some simple lifestyle changes can make the difference in not only how you feel in terms of energy, and mental clarity, but how you look by more than 10 years, and how long you live by up to 30 years. It’s never too late to make some changes. Fluid retention is the number one reason for accelerated aging. You’ll notice weight that won’t shift, puffy face and eyes, cellulite, and swollen ankles, not to mention fatigue and muscle weakness. The muscles and organs are dehydrated, while your lymphatic system holds the water that should be hydrating your body. Gradually that fluid builds up, increasing blood pressure and eventually leading to heart disease and other illness. You may see signs of broken capillaries at your ankles, thighs, and face, around your nose and
hairline, and puffy under your eyes. Your weight may fluctuate a few kilos quickly, and you also may notice your rings don’t fit some days. Reverse your aging fast by reducing alcohol, preservatives and sugar. Reduce stress, balance your life with some fun. Test for food allergens as they cause fluid retention for 24 hours, so if you’re eating them daily, you’ll never move the fluid. Eat only the carbs you require for energy for that day, and get moving – exercise pumps the fluid through your body more efficiently. Follow these steps and you’ll look and feel more energetic than ever before and your body and mind will thank you for it.

MY OPINION
UP, UP AND AWAY
TESTING TIMES
The airport expansion should be the top priority for the Sunshine Coast to move forward, writes Simon Ambrose.
Sami Muirhead has done some weird things on radio for laughs, but this one is no joke.
O
ver the past decade I have done a lot of things as part of my job as a radio announcer. I have jumped out of planes; gone swimming with sharks; and eaten eyeballs that once belonged to a cow. But this week I did something I thought I never would: I got a mammogram on air. Of course, larrikin Todd (my radio counterpart) had to tag along to chip in with the obligatory boob jokes and make it sufficiently awkward for everyone involved. Todd is passionate about spreading the message of getting your breasts checked and his heart was in the right place. Hopefully his eyes were also in the right place – diverted! For moral support, I roped in my best friend. And you know why I agreed to this boob broadcast? Because it could only help to spread the message of the importance of having regular mammograms. I seem to have so many friends battling forms of cancer at the moment. Cancer used to be something I associated with my parent’s friends. The risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer by age 85 is one in eight for women. My boob modesty level seems to change with the effects of gravity on my body. This is not to say I am going to hit the Gold Coast and be flashing my girls to strangers. No one wants to see that. But that old chestnut about you do not care who sees your chest after you have kids is kind of true.
Before we join the ‘I have given birth club’, we are so much more protective of our parts. Then something happens during labour where you are in so much pain you couldn’t care if the Pope saw you in your birthday suit. Boobs are clever and lovely body parts, but still just body parts. Age brings that wisdom to women. Men, I find still tend to start twitching with excitement at the mere mention of the word watermelons. So the circus came to town for Breastscreen Queensland, who must have wondered who this unruly trio was running around with cameras and recording devices. The ladies who work there are lovely and polite and sensitive and caring. The opposite of Todd. The mammogram didn’t hurt at all (it is uncomfortable for some). Your breast is placed on a plate and then a glass slide compresses it; the breast tissue has to be compressed to get a really good image. We were in and out in 30 minutes and because we are over 40, it was free. Todd was ordered to stay at the front door, where he talked up the merits of mammograms. I sort of deserve a medal for taking Todd along, but you know what I would rather have? For you to go and have a mammogram. Visit health.qld.gov.au/breastscreen.

T
here is a great deal of talk about how the Sunshine Coast should best celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2017. From our point of view, the most visionary ‘present’ would be the start of the Sunshine Coast Airport upgrade. The Sunshine Coast name came into being in August 1967, and the success of the destination was directly linked to the establishment of the region’s airport in 1961. As direct services expanded, so did the region’s business and tourism economy, and if we are to provide the infrastructure to support the Sunshine Coast’s next 50 years, the upgrade of the airport has to be a top priority. We have been fortunate to attract major increases in domestic flights, with Jetstar, Virgin and Air New Zealand adding flights and Qantas resuming direct services from next month, but the reality is that all of these airlines are restricting either cargo or passenger numbers because of constraints caused by the lack of a suitable runway. Fifty years is a long time in aviation, and given that planes have changed so dramatically over the period, it is logical for airports to be upgraded to keep pace with these changes. Jets are significantly quieter than they were 50 years ago, and with a change in the orientation of the runway, the environmental impact estimated that 3500 fewer dwellings would be affected by airline noise by 2020, despite the new runway allowing for larger aircraft.
Even more importantly, the whole Sunshine Coast community will benefit from the upgrade. It is estimated that an enhanced airport could contribute $4.1 billion and generate more than 2230 jobs in the 20 years from 2020 to 40. It would boost tourism, agriculture (through enhanced cargo capacity) and the region’s business potential. It will also be important to cater for the expected tens of thousands of people moving here over the next 20 years. Sunshine Coast residents want to be able to travel around Australia and overseas from their own airport, just as visitors want to be able to fly directly into MCY and be on the beach or in the hinterland within 30 minutes of leaving the airport. That’s what makes us such a special and popular destination, but we need to act decisively and positively on the airport upgrade proposal. Unfortunately, too often it is the vocal minority that is heard on such issues, even when the facts and logic clearly show the benefits. So we are calling on all residents and businesses who want to see the Sunshine Coast successfully convert an attractive half-century into a game changing century to get behind the upgrade proposal and be heard. Support the airport expansion project and have your say by November 30 via haveyoursay.dsd.qld.gov.au. Simon Ambrose is CEO of Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd (SCDL)

I would recommend the USC program wholeheartedly to anyone launching into a business that has intent to grow. BUSINESS AND FINANCE
THE DIVIDEND TRAP Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
O
ne of the major pitfalls for investors is to look at historical dividends and expect they will be maintained, or even grow, into the future. Some examples of companies that were once high dividend payers but now return nothing are Arrium (the old One Steel), UGL, Ten Network, David Jones, and Pacific Brands. The industries these companies are involved with have obviously fallen on hard times – mining, broadcast media, and consumer discretionary. In an age where income is increasingly the focus, due to a large retiree population and low returns from term deposits, investors seeking income are looking to the share market to
provide that. Forecast dividends for the banks range from eight per cent to 10 per cent (including franking), Telstra is around eight per cent and BHP and Rio from nine to 11 per cent. However, what is the likelihood that this will continue? There are several risks to the banks. There is the risk that the housing market will suffer a severe correction, leading to an increase in bad debts which are running at historically low levels. There is also the fact that banks are issuing more capital so they will require greater profits simply to maintain existing payout ratios. To counter these possibilities, banks have recently raised interest rates to borrowers and are looking at technology efficiencies and more cost cutting. Witness our local bank, which has recently gone tellerless as an example of a new way to reduce costs. Looking further than the banks, the miners are facing the challenge of falling commodity prices. Traditionally, they have not been regarded as high dividend payers, although BHP is still
sticking to its progressive dividend policy whereby they aim to increase the dividend each year. The prices of the major miners have fallen from peaks of $45.30 to $20.19 (BHP) and $124.18 to $47.84 (RIO). As dividends have steadily increased, with falling share prices the yields on the stocks look unbelievably attractive. However this is where the possible dividend trap lies. Although the big miners are aggressively cutting costs, it would be foolish to think current commodity prices would not more than offset that. One must always bear in mind the possible risks of extrapolating the past into the future. It is essential to consult your adviser when structuring your portfolio for income alone. ONLINE LIFE AFTER DEATH
John Gallagher from Argon Law says you may want to pass on more than just your possessions in a will
I
f you have made a valid will, then when you die your assets will be distributed in accordance with that will and the process of getting in and distributing those assets will be managed by the executors appointed under that will. The estate to be managed by your executors includes all of your property, including any of your intellectual property rights that survive you. In many cases, content created and posted by you online on social media sites or email is intellectual property which will pass to your executors on your death. It is not unusual, in the internet age, for the law to lag behind developments in the online world, and there are no clear laws granting family members or executors who do not have the required passwords, access to a deceased person’s social media content. One thing you can do is to provide a list of email and social media sites, usernames and passwords to someone
you trust, who might also be the executor named in your will. Whilst probably not binding upon your executor, your will, or a document held with your will, could contain a prompt or a set of directions stating your wishes in respect of how your online presence should be managed after your death. The US government at one stage even went so far as to publish a recommendation that people consider writing a “social media will” containing such information. You are well advised to make regular changes to online passwords and so keeping a social media will up to date may require regular review. You may also want to check out online sites like Password Box or Dead Social which contain some interesting ideas about managing your social media presence from beyond the grave.

ou know I decided this week I simply don’t make enough money to go on a massive holiday, so this Christmas I’m going to sit at home and drink enough beers until I don’t know where I am. Hey, when it comes to bona fide escapism, I’m all over it like angry on a bogan at a reclaim Straya march. I feel like the way things are right now around the world, we all need something to believe in. I believe I’ll have another beer. I’m not into being controversial with political statements, as anyone who knows me will attest I’m not racist or anti-religion or anything like that. There’s only two things I can’t stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people’s cultures and the Dutch. Of course, the other thing that really gets me fired up is sayings that make no sense at all. We’ve been down this track before my friend and you know how I feel about nonsensical sayings, such as ‘fight fire with fire’. Pretty sure the professionals use water. Or the classic, ‘believe you me’. Shouldn’t that be ‘believe me, you’? But this week I stumbled

across anothery that’s making me nuttier than a crate of Nutworks Chrissy hampers. How many times have you heard the saying, ‘slow and steady wins the race’? This is false prophecy at its finest. Slow and steady doesn’t win the race. Not once, not ever. Fast. Fast always wins the race. Peter Brock didn’t win Bathurst a record nine times and become the King of the Mountain by going slow and steady. He went fast. Real fast. Cathy Freeman didn’t score gold in Sydney in 2000 by running 400 metres slow and steady. She ran as fast as she could. It’s the same with, ‘I once was blind but now I see’. Sadly, that’s not how blindness works. I went to school with a brilliant kid called Marcus Brown, he was a champion and he was blind. Not once did he ever start to see. ‘Needless to say’ is another example of a famous saying that make no sense at all. If it was needless to say, then why are you saying it? It’s needless. It is without need. The entire phrase cancels itself out. ‘You’re the apple of my eye’. Truth is, people don’t really care much for apples these days and so that saying is archaic. If you were to say, ‘you are the orange is the new black of my eye’, then you’d be back on track. As if greening out over ridiculous sayings isn’t enough, my wife just gave me an official list of things not to wrap in bacon. Pinecones is top of the list, followed by a stapler, the neighbour’s cat, the TV remote, Graham the Postie and our daughter. It’s a lot to try to remember.
With all this chaos inside my noggin, it’s good to know there’s a little bit of medicine on the scene. Stone and Wood’s new release Cloud Catcher has arrived in bulk to help us celebrate the greatest summer of our lives. For those of us who love S&W’s Pacific Ale – there’s a club, its membership is everyone – the Cloud Catcher is just like Pac Ale but at 5.5 per cent alcohol volume it’s Pac Ale on steroids. Using the same Aussie Galaxy hop that is used in Pacific Ale creates the very familiar passionfruity aroma, and with the addition of Ella, a new and exciting hop, comes a strong hint of apricots and grapefruit. Unfiltered and with bugger all preservatives and additives, the Cloud Catcher is a full bodied affair, with a solid refreshing flavour and a dry, clean, bitter finish. Once you’ve sampled the goods you’ll be frothing for more. This is the beer that beer would drink, if it drank beer. I give the S&W Cloud Catcher a red hot four out of five thumbs up.

• 8 large chicken thighs with skin on, bone in • 12 fresh apricots halved • 2 lemons • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 clove garlic • 1 tablespoon honey • 10 sprigs thyme, picked • 100g roughly chopped toasted macadamia nuts • salt and pepper Dry the chicken thigh with paper towel, place in a bowl with a drizzle of olive oil, paprika, sliced garlic, thyme, juice of half a lemon and salt and pepper. Leave to marinate for at least half an hour. Place the chicken thigh skin side down on the a barbecue plate or heavy-based frying pan, place a heavy weight like another frying pan on the chicken ,it is very important not to move the chicken and to cook it very slowly as this helps to develop a beautiful crispy skin (approximately 30 minutes). Remove the chicken, leave to rest for at least 10 minutes. While the chicken is resting, gently grill the apricots cut side down until golden and starting to soften. Place on a platter with the chicken, drizzle with honey and the juice of a lemon, sprinkle with toasted macadamias. Serve with a simple rocket salad and chargrilled broccolini. Matched with the Stone and Wood Cloud Catcher Damien Grimes, Executive Chef of Bellvista Tavern, Parklands Tavern and Brightwater Tavern.

FUN FACTOR Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS
T
rying to make a Mini more fun to drive is no easy task. On the degree of difficulty scale, it ranks somewhere between making Miranda Kerr more
attractive and improving Malcolm Turnbull’s self-esteem. Yet somehow, the clever folk at Mini have done just that. Hot on the heels of unveiling the third generation of their reborn, iconic little
MY15 Amarok Core 4x4 Manual FROM

machine, Mini’s engineers have lifted the covers from the performance-enhanced version – the Mini John Cooper Works. It is, like the name suggests, a Mini with the works.
But the John Cooper name comes from deeper within the Mini’s DNA – harking back almost to when the little British ‘brick’ was first born in 1959. The Mini badge was barely a year old when John Cooper, a British Formula One designer and builder, developed the first performance-enhanced Mini Cooper back in 1960. It sounds ludicrous to say, but by increasing the original car’s output from 25 kilowatts to a ‘sporty’ 41 kilowatts – and bolting on some improved brakes and other go-fast bits – it helped Cooper turn the Mini into a motorsport giant. Despite its tiny size and almost-as-tiny engine, it became a stunningly successful racing machine – including three victories in the famous Monte Carlo rally. So the idea of a souped-up Mini is certainly nothing new. But under the guidance of Mini’s new owner BMW, the high-performance end of the family tree has become a formidable thing indeed. The famously British badge has been under German ownership for almost two decades now. Some people wrongly believe BMW ‘resurrected’ the Mini after a long absence. In fact, the Bavarians bought the brand as part of their takeover of Rover in the mid-90s – and rolled out the first ‘new’ Mini barely six months after

the final ‘old’ Mini rolled off the production line in 2000. And while it’s unthinkable to some that this most treasured piece of British nostalgia should be foreign-owned, even the Brits would have to admit the Germans have done the brand justice. Against that background, then, comes this lastest JCW Mini. And it’s a cracker They’ve done much more than just pump a few extra kilowatts and some fancy trinkets into an already smart little car. The JCW team have elevated the Mini’s strengths in virtually every way – in appearance, performance and technology. A new two-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine is a step up from the previous 1.6-litre version – delivering a lusty 170 kilowatts along with 320 Newton metres of torque. That, in turn, means a
O
%
Comparison Rate*
0-100 kilometres-per-hour sprint time of just over six seconds, while sipping less than six litres per 100 kilometres. All that power gets to the ground efficiently thanks to advanced traction control and stability control functions, electronic grip and performance control. The result is a car that doesn’t just invite you to drive it with enthusiasm, it dares you. Push a bit faster into that corner? Yes please. Punch the accelerator away from those traffic lights? Don’t mind if I do. Set the exhaust crackling by downshifting with the gearchange paddles? Try and stop me. And while those qualities are inherent in virtually every Mini, they’re magnified in the JCW version. A note of admiration here for the BMW engineers who have worked on this project. Making each successive generation of Mini feel new and fresh is no easy task. The basic Mini – despite growing in just about every dimension since its re-release – is still unmistakeably cut from the same cloth as those very originals. Yet through subtle changes and enhancements, this latest Mini is clearly a step above the car that preceded it. This Mini is longer and wider than the previous model – giving it an even more reassuring grip on the road. Cornering
and grip is sublime – it doesn’t so much steer its way through twisty roads as skip through them, deftly dancing from one change of direction to another. Technology steps up a rung or two – as well as the performance aides there’s a head-up display, parking distance control with reversing camera, LED headlights and daytime running lights, satellite navigation, advanced trip computer and premium audio with Bluetooth. That long list, plus the grippy suede sports seats, chunky wheel and distinctive JCW paint combinations, help justify the car’s expanded pricetag, which just squeaks in below $50,000 for the automatic version, before onroad costs. The ability to choose between three separate performance modes – Green, Normal and Sport – gives the car three distinctive personalities – met by changing shades of interior lighting. Not surprisingly, our test machine spent most of its time in Sport mode – not just because of the sharp throttle response, snappy gearchanges and sharper handling – but because of the message that comes up on the control screen when you put it into Sport. It reads: ‘Maximum Go-Kart Feel’. Now, how can a Mini be more fun than that?
MINI JOHN COOPER WORKS HOW BIG? Park this latest model next to an original Mini and it looks like it’s on steroids. But in fact, the Mini is still a petite little thing – meaning limited space in the rear seats and only reasonable room in the cargo hatch. But its nimble handling and ability to dart in and out of traffic makes up for the lack of practicality. HOW FAST? It’s the most powerful Mini ever. The new two-litre turbo engine delivers massive torque – meaning in the automatic model it zips through the gears without ever revving loudly, yet accelerates like a rocket. HOW THIRSTY? The engine is incredibly frugal for such firecracker performance. Official thirst is 5.8L/100km for the auto; 6.7L/100km for the manual. HOW MUCH? It’s not cheap at $49,950 (the manual is $2500 cheaper) but the JCW offers a lot of bang for your buck.

Get you web connection sorted and tune in to the Vans Triple Crown – Sunset should be underway - because you will not be surfing! There’s a rumour of a gun Hawaiian shaper has arrived on the Sunshine Coast. Talk with the crew from Beach Beat and they can fill you in. Local boy Kai Hing made the front cover of Surfing Life this month. He was dropping into some waves that 98 per cent of us would pull back from. Worth a look!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Flathead are taking lures and baits from Bli Bli to the motorway bridge. Legal sizes are 40cm to 75cm, over this size are breeding females and must be returned to the water. Bream are about in numbers around Goat & Channel Island near the bar, berleying is the only way to entice them to feed. Mangrove jack love the hot steamy conditions, so summer is prime time to target these hard fighting, ambush predators. SURF: Tarwhine and shovel nosed rays are along Maroochy North Shore while you’ll get tailor and bream at Pincushion where baby blue pillies are the preferred bait. Sand whiting and dart are in the gutter right along Maroochy Beach using pippies and sand worms.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Taskmaster Saturn demands that you get some serious work done on Monday! Matters involving finances, taxes, study and research are highlighted – check all the facts thoroughly. Venus shifts into your relationship zone on Saturday, where it stays until December 30.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Your mercurial mind is hungry for a stimulating workout so it’s a wonderful week to solve a puzzle, play chess, dip into a novel or try something new. Social networking and internet commerce are favoured, as you discover innovative ways to deliver your message.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] With serious Saturn in your wellbeing zone, make sure you are exercising regularly and eating well. Maintaining good health requires discipline. With Venus and Mars visiting your domestic zone, it’s time to spruce up Casa Cancer.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Saturn cramps your style on Monday, as your work is criticised or others fail to appreciate your creativity. Just remember that you are absolutely fabulous – even when people aren’t applauding! Your mood improves on Tuesday.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Are you stuck in a rut? Are you completing daily tasks on auto-pilot? Resist the urge to be too safe and sensible! With Jupiter in your sign until September 2016, it’s time to broaden your horizons and activate your adventurous side.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] On Monday there’s no substitute for hard work (and no clever short cuts) so stop complaining, roll up your sleeves, and get to it. Avoid procrastination! With gung-ho Mars moving through your sign until January 3, strive to go after what you want.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Is money too tight to mention? With Saturn moving slowly through your finance zone, your ability to budget is being tested. It’s time to come up with a clever plan to cut spending and boost cash flow. Financial improvements you make now will pay off in the future.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] There’s no denying there’s a tricky dilemma this week. You want to go, go, go … but the pace is slow, slow, slow! Monday looks mighty frustrating, as Saturn stymies you at every turn. Sloppy attention to detail could see a promising project fall flat.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] The pressure’s on! You’ve got an incredible amount on your plate so aim to work smarter, rather than harder. Have you got a problem you can’t solve? If you allow yourself the time and space to day-dream, imagine and visualise, then you’ll come up with a surprising solution.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Adventurous Aquarians are in freedom-bunny mode on Tuesday and Wednesday, when positive Mercury/Uranus aspects fire up your curious mind and your independent nature. Communication is the buzz word as you seek out friends and acquaintances.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Work or home life will be challenging on Monday, when someone expects you to complete a task on a very tight timeline. Don’t complain or descend into confusion – just put your head down and get on with it. You’re in the mood to daydream but don’t overdo it.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Many rams will feel mighty restless – especially on Monday, when the sun/Saturn conjunction stymies communication and frustrates travel plans. Then the Mercury/Uranus trine activates your adventure zone, and you’ll be dreaming of exotic escapades and foreign shores.

THE LAST WORD
A BRUSH WITH ANTHROPOLOGY Richard O’Leary ponders the nature vs nurture debate after buying his son a pink Barbie toothbrush.
S
o I bought a pink Barbie toothbrush for my seven-yearold son. Now don’t rush to conclusions. I wasn’t taking a political stance against the pervasive stereotype of blue is for boys and pink is for girls – although as a general rule, I don’t like slotting any group into a particular box, whether it’s based on the preference for a particular colour, the colour of skin or the choice of religion, lifestyle or football team (actually forget the last one, Manly fans deserve to be put into a box, preferably pine). No, the choice of toothbrush was pure misadventure. I was single dadding it for a weekend and grabbed the first toothbrushes I saw while hurtling through the aisles of the local IGA. It was only when I arrived home I noticed the mistake (not because I think boys shouldn’t use anything pink – but for the theatrics I expected when
one of my boys was designated as the new owner of the aforementioned human cleaning device). The five-year-old spotted the Spiderman toothbrush and immediately claimed it, while simultaneously pointing out to his brother that he now was the owner of a girl’s toothbrush. I have to say, the seven-year-old handled it pretty well – he gave a shrug of the shoulders and continued reading his book. But it did get me thinking about how this colour code for kids originated – nature or nurture? A 2011 study found that when one-year-old boys and girls were shown pairs of identical items in blue and pink, there was no preference for either colour. But by the time the girls had reached two, they started to show a preference for pink. This suggests it’s a learnt behaviour.
University of Maryland historian Jo Paoletti has undertaken decades of research on the subject and says it’s purely a creation of marketing, which began in the 1950s. She says in the early 1900s pink was associated just as much with boys as with girls. She quotes a 1918 issue of the Infant’s Department, a trade magazine for baby clothes: “There has been a great diversity of opinion on this subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink being a more decided and strong colour, is more suitable for a boy; while blue, which is more delicate and dainty is prettier for the girl.” Maybe my eldest is just a little old school.
