OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

he combination of cool musician, political activist and all-round good guy is a difficult combination to pull off, but Michael Franti appears to do it with ease. Our cover story takes a closer look at the headline act at this year’s Woodford Folk Festival, as Leigh Robshaw gets up close and personal to a man who has successfully freed himself from some very dark places. Also this week, you get to meet the woman behind business juggernaut Food Matters, talk with a man who has turned gender stereotypes on their head by making a career out of midwifery, and test drive Kia’s new Carnival – a no-nonsense people mover with space to spare. ‘Tis the season to be merry, but how do you handle the morning after the night before? In My Life we bring you the best hangover cures from around the world. And, as always there’s plenty of property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

DUCHESS OF WELLNESS

Co-founder of business empire Food Matters, Laurentine ten Bosch, says the Sunshine Coast speaks her language. FIRST JOB?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

Believe it or not, my first job was at a pharmacy.

The day our baby Hugo was born in our bedroom, a completely non-medicated home birth in the comfort of our own home.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? The Food Matters 28-Day Health Transformation Program, which will go live in March next year. It’s a guided program including meal plans, video recipes, daily online yoga classes and healing visualisations.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Going to Date with Destiny, a five-day Anthony Robbins event on the Gold Coast that helped us to break through limiting beliefs which allowed us to quit our jobs at the time and follow our lifelong passions in the health and wellness industry.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . James, me and Hugo, the newest and coolest member of the family.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Tina for my Dutch family and friends and Loz for my Aussie friends.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? No regrets here. Life’s too short not to be living the life of your dreams.

FIRST CAR? A cream 1977 Vintage Volvo with leather interior. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, by Robin Sharma.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Speaking five languages. My parents were really big on language school during the school holidays.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

Get addicted to your customers’ experience.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Seven years now and before that in Los Angeles and Europe. I’m originally from Holland, born in Amsterdam and both my parents are Dutch, but we moved out to Australia when I was 12. As I still have lots of family over there, we do try to go back every year and it’s super fun to have summer over there when it’s winter here.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? The lifestyle is still the best in the world. You can go for a swim or surf in crystal clear, white sandy beaches before work and ride your bike home.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Yaroomba beach.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m underwater. I love snorkelling, diving, surfing and swimming amongst fish, coral and other sea life. It makes me feel at home. It’s a form of meditation for me.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Follow your heart and dreams. You have the tools within you to go and do whatever it is that your heart desires.

COVER STORY

HITTING THE SWEET SPOT

AAP

US musician Michael Franti speaks to My Weekly Preview about his personal quest for peace, love and happiness. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

M

ichael Franti has been called the Bob Marley of our time. Like Marley, the charismatic frontman of American band Spearhead is of mixed race and uses the medium of music to reach millions with messages of social, political and environmental justice. But when he headlines this year’s 30th anniversary Woodford Folk Festival, he’s going to pull a stunt more reminiscent of Bob Dylan than Bob Marley. “Myself and my guitarist from Spearhead, J Bowman, we’ve been working on a new album in Miami with Jamaican producers Supa Dups and Di Genius and they do a lot of electronic dancehall and reggae and dance music, too,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “We took our acoustic guitars and did a hybrid of roots and acoustic combined with electronic and dancehall elements so when we come to Woodford, we’re going to bring some of that energy to the show. We’ll start off with acoustics and then it will be like when Bob Dylan went electric and everyone was outraged,” he jokes. “So – an intimate show with you and Jay and 25,000 people in the amphitheatre?” I ask. “Hey! Now you’re making me nervous,” he laughs. “Nah, it should be fun. It will be an event where we go from sitting down on stools to everyone getting up and dancing. Michael Franti’s going to 14 My Weekly Preview | December 18, 2015

14.indd 1

go electronic!” He sounds pumped, and with good reason. It’s his first appearance at Woodford, a festival renowned for advocating the principles Franti holds dearest: peace, compassion, respect for the environment and humanitarianism. “Ever since we went to Australia for the first time in 1993 people have been saying you’ve got to get to Woodford,” he says. “We’ve played Byron Bay Blues and Roots Festival about ten times and all the artists there talk about it, so we’re excited to be there and I know it’s the 30th anniversary so I can’t wait. We’re usually somewhere else in the world during the New Year’s season, and this year it happens we’re not, so we want to make sure we’re playing Woodford.” Woodford Folk Festival’s head of programming, Chloe Goodyear, says: “Michael Franti is certainly an artist we’ve hoped to have on the program for a number of years. He has many fans on staff and within the festival, of course, and his music and his political engagement really resonates for us. We don’t tend to really pursue artists because of a level or profile, but when we’re booking for the

amphitheatre, we do try to think about how we can make that experience the best possible one for our audience, and also make sure that being up there is something that the artist will enjoy.” The Woodford crowd will be amongst the first in the world to hear tracks from the new album played live. “We’ve almost finished mixing the last couple of songs,” says Franti. “ We

“We have a saying in our household, which is: be your best, serve the greater good and rock out wherever you are. It’s kind of our mantra” haven’t come up with a name for the album yet. Usually I name it after one of the songs on the album but we’ve been thinking outside the box. Maybe it could be it’s own name. We’ve been rolling around a bunch of different ideas and haven’t come up with one yet. Maybe you could help me come up with a name by the end of the interview.” No pressure. . . “Well, what are the overriding themes of the album?” I ask him. “Right now is a time in our planet where there’s so much of what appears to

be chaos taking place – environmental destruction, political violence, terrorism, and economic challenge, immigration, so many things causing confusion and pain for so many people. So this record is really one that speaks to all of those issues, but also is something that is meant to inspire people to become difference makers. “So often we have something like what just happened in America with the mass shooting. Every week it seems like there’s a mass shooting in America. People on Facebook say we’re praying for Paris or Sandy Hook or Colorado Springs. I believe that peace is not just something we hope and pray for but work for every day. Millions of people doing millions of small things every day is what creates a climate where potential violence gets de-escalated so we’re not just asking these questions, how do we solve it after it happens, but how we solve it before it happens? That’s what we need, is all of us to be raising our voice and working in whatever way we can to communicate that. “These are things I feel people all around the world are worried about. I’m one of those people. I wake up and think what’s the world going to be like in 10, 20, 30 years. What can I do to promote peace and sustainable and renewable energy and social justice and opportunities for young people? Those are the things I’m passionate about.” Just a few simple themes then. I’m thinking I’ll opt out of naming the album at this point. Big issues are Franti’s thing. He’s as widely admired for his activism as he is for his upbeat, energetic sound, which blends hip hop, funk, soul, R&B, rock, reggae, dancehall and folk. An outspoken advocate for peace in the Middle East, he travelled to Iraq, Palestine and Israel to make a documentary called I Know I’m Not Alone. In 2006, he was invited by Labor MP Jenny Macklin to show the film in Parliament House. His career as an activist musician stretches back to his first band The Beatnigs, followed by the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, an industrial hip hop band he formed in 1990. As a rebellious and angry young rapper, he wrote cutting-edge tracks like Television, The Drug of the Nation, and became a household name, supporting bands like U2 and Nirvana. Franti’s drive to change the world for the better can be traced back to his childhood. Born to a white mother and a black father in Oakland, California, his mother held him for one hour before giving him up for adoption for fear of a backlash from her racist family. He was myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

adopted by Carole Wisti and Charles Franti, a Finnish-American couple in Oakland, who at the time had three biological children and one adopted African American son. Franti remembers being called a nigger as a kid, and when Carole tried to console him with the old ‘sticks and stones’ platitude, he called BS. Names did hurt him, as did the knowledge his biological parents didn’t want him. The birth of his first son, Cappy, at the age of 21, gave him the impetus to track down his biological parents. He began a tentative relationship with his mother but was met with an uninterested father. Franti’s identity crisis, insecurity and sense of separateness as a child spurred him to become the inclusive performer he is today, always striving to connect with audiences. At 198 centimetres tall, he’s a magnetic presence on stage – clearly his natural habitat. But he’s just as happy to play his acoustic guitar on street corners, closer to the people. He practices yoga, hasn’t worn shoes for 15 years (except thongs on planes), is a serial hugger, and immerses himself in the political landscape of every place he visits. “Last time I was in Australia, in Darwin, I went and visited one of these detention centres and as we were trying to enter the centre there was a group of people who did acts of self-mutilation,” he says. “They were women with young children who didn’t want to be shipped off Australia to Nauru. We were going in to play music there and this happened and we ended up not even being able to get in there and play. We ended up playing outside at night in a sort of vigil. “The idea of immigration is one that is only going to grow bigger as the world’s population increases and there are fewer resources for more people, so it’s something we all have to get our heads around and something we all have to be compassionate about. “My mother is Irish, German and Belgian; her family came to America as

myweeklypreview.com.au

15.indd 1

immigrants. My father’s side is African American and Native American. The Native Americans were there originally and the African Americans came as slaves. On the African side, my great, great, great grandmother had been raped by a slave master. So in my bloodline I have both slave and slave owner, immigrant as well as indigenous. I have compassion for people who are seeking a better life, and for people who’ve had their land taken from them, and people who’ve been taken from their land. It’s important we all look at our histories and be compassionate.” Franti is a family man, and endeavours to bring positivity and optimism to his daily life with his wife, Sara, and two sons from former relationships, Ade and Cappy. “The main thing I’m grateful for is my family, my friends, my loved ones, my wife,” he says. “We have a saying in our household which is: be your best, serve the greater good and rock out wherever you are. It’s kind of our mantra. It means to always try to work to create something new that becomes part of who you are, learn to paint, learn to play a new instrument, learn to do something new. The next thing is, serve the greater good, which means give back. The final thing is rock out wherever you are, never lose that enthusiasm for life, that incredible joy we experience when we let our passions lead.” Last year when his 16-year-old son Ade was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease called FSGS, Franti received tens of thousands of messages of support from fans on social media. “He’ll need a new kidney in a few years,” he says, quietly. “It was something we thought was going to rip our family apart. But every day there are small miracles that take place; an extra hug, an extra kiss, an extra ‘I love you’.” Ade’s illness inspired Franti to write the catchy song, Once a Day where he sings, “we all need to rise up” in the face of adversity. He felt honoured to perform the song at the Dalai Lama’s 80th birthday celebrations in California in July – and

Nature spirits abound at Woodford Folk Festival snap a selfie with His Holiness, who joked about how such a big man can be so light. The tale illustrates how the Michael Franti of today is more closely aligned with the Dalai Lama’s message of peace, love and compassion, having left behind the angry rebel of his youth. He’s in a good place, and you can hear it in his music. “So, when are you happiest?” I ask him as a final question, still racking my brain for the perfect album title. “I’m happiest when I feel like I’m in the moment and I’m not worried about the stresses of the day, or the past, or thinking about the future. I’m just in the moment. In a larger sense, when I’m doing the things I’m passionate about with the skills I’ve developed in my life, the way I earn a living and serving the greater good. When they’re all working with synchronicity, it’s that little sweet spot in the middle. That to me is success. Having purpose and serving others, it brings me that sense of joy and sense of optimism.” I’ve got it: The Sweet Spot. Michael Franti will perform at Woodford Folk Festival on Tuesday December 29 at 9.45pm.

COAST HEALTH CARE EXCELS More than $2 million a day, every day, was invested into the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service last year. This week the service released its Quality of Care Report 2014–15, which provided a snapshot of its initiatives and achievements. Board Chair, Emeritus Professor Paul Thomas said the report offered an insight into the people, places and programs of the service. “The performance of the health service over the past 12 months has been exceptional.”

Achievements across a wide range of areas shared the spotlight at Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson’s annual State of the Region address last Friday. Jamieson said the council’s Social Strategy was a key achievement, as was fiscal management. “We are in a strong financial position to support our community through a wide range of facilities, programs and services,’’ he said. “We are now the second highest performing regional economy in Queensland and we are on track to deliver our $33 billion economy by 2033,’’ Jamieson said. The council gave over $3.5 million in community grants.

BOOST FOR BUSINESS

TURTLE EGGS RELOCATED

The September 2015 Sunshine Coast Business Survey has revealed that confidence in the region has risen to the highest level since 2009. The business confidence index reached a record high of 117 points, one point higher than the November 2014 result and 19 points higher than the 2011 survey. Almost two-thirds of businesses surveyed expected to experience further increases in profitability in the next six months.

About 20 volunteers spent last Thursday night relocating 136 loggerhead turtle eggs at Point Cartwright Beach in an effort to rebuild the endangered population. Environment Portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says TurtleCare Sunshine Coast volunteers worked carefully to relocate the eggs away from the erosion zone a couple of hundred metres up the beach to a more secure area. The volunteers will now keep a close eye on the nest as hatching is anticipated to be around mid-February. Beachgoers who notice turtles, or nests, should call TurtleCare on 0437 559 067.

TRAVEL

BITES OF THE BIG APPLE Planning a trip to New York City? Don’t miss these attractions. By Beth J Harpaz

O

n a dark December night, a canopy of lights glitters across Lower Manhattan, and not just from One World Trade and the other downtown skyscrapers. The neighbourhood sparkles with new attractions, from the otherworldly glow of the SeaGlass carousel in Battery Park to a colourful, choreographed light show at the Winter Garden. You’ll also find plenty more. Here are some details.

SEAGLASS CAROUSEL The SeaGlass Carousel is unlike any merry-go-round you’ve ever ridden. No toothy wooden horses and vintage organ music here. Instead, the glowing, pastel seats are shaped like seashells that spin and weave while a soaring, dreamlike soundtrack plays. The attraction is located in Battery Park at the tip of Lower Manhattan, a short walk from the boats to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The Staten Island Ferry terminal is nearby as well, with free trips

the 9/11 museum and the tower observatory. PIER A Not far from the carousel heading west along the waterfront is Pier A Harbour House, a landmark building that dates to 1886. It now houses several dining options, with lovely views of the water on one side and on the other side, the skyscraper canyons of the financial district – increasingly known as FiDi – highlighted by One World Trade. Menus range from fun pub fare to oysters, lobster and other seafood. A plaza surrounding the building entrance is dotted with 12 large, colourful Cool Globes. The globes are a public art installation on view until April, designed to raise awareness about global warming.

WORLD FINANCIAL CENTRE/ BROOKFIELD PLACE/WINTER GARDEN This building just west of One World Trade on the Hudson River offers shopping, food and a respite from the hustle and bustle of the streets outside. Enter at Brookfield Place and check out the upscale retailers, from Gucci and

The world famous Rockefeller ice-skating rink Ferragamo to Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors. Then make your way to the Winter Garden, a vaulted glass atrium 10 stories high, with lots of places to sit. It’s a nice place to catch your breath, with an atmosphere that manages to feel simultaneously serene and vibrant. New for the holiday season is Luminaries, a free, colourful, hypnotic light installation that bathes the atrium in a choreographed palette of moody

blues, lavenders and other hues from 650 hanging lanterns, until January 10. Also onsite is Le District, a French food hall where you’ll find crepes, coffee, cheese, sandwiches, fresh produce, flowers and more.

MY LIFE

WORLD’S WEIRDEST HANGOVER CURES

T

hrobbing head, dry mouth, nausea, shaky hands. A hangover is your punishment for having way too much fun the night before. Sydney’s first hangover clinic will hook you up to an IV drip that pumps saline, sodium, minerals, vitamins, oxygen and anti-nausea meds into your blood for a mere $140 to $200. If you’re in New York, you can hail a hangover bus for some IV fluids, and if you’re in Las Vegas, you can order an IV recovery drip through room service. No such luck here on the Coast. It’s either drink in moderation, or pay the price the next day. The only real way to cure a hangover is wait for the alcohol to pass out of your system, but in the meantime, you could try one of these remedies from around the world: GERMANY: Katerfrühstück – marinated

herring, pickled gherkins, raw onion. AMERICA: Back in the wild west, a mug of hot water with a tablespoon of rabbit poo was said to do the trick. PERU: Leche de tigre (tiger’s milk): a cocktail of lime juice, coriander, garlic, onion, chillies, salt, pepper and fish. MEXICO: Menudo, or tripe soup containing the edible offal from the stomach of a farm animal consisting of beef stomach in a broth with a red chilli pepper base. Yummy. MONGOLIA: The Mongolian mary – pickled sheep eyeballs in tomato juice. DENMARK: Reparationsbajer, which translates to ‘repair beer’. Known by Australians as a hair of the dog. SOUTH AFRICA: Ostrich egg omelette. SICILY: Dried bull penis. Now out of vogue, in years gone by, tragically hungover Sicilians would chew on a good old dried bull penis. HAITI: Voodoo practitioners stick 13 black-headed pins into the cork of the bottle that caused all the trouble. Just for revenge. AUSTRALIA: Berocca and Vegemite on toast for brekky, cold pizza and chocolate milk for lunch, followed by a dip in one of our beautiful beaches – Bob’s your uncle.

BE KIND TO YOUR BODY Cyndi O’Meara has some advice for surviving the overindulgences of Christmas.

C

hristmas is a time of year to let your hair down and have a great time. By all means have fun, but follow a few tips in order to survive the festive season with your health and wellness intact. If you have been steady in everything you have been doing throughout the year, then some cheating is allowed without making yourself feel like you have failed. But – food hangovers are the worst. When you combine too many foods, different meats, fats, dairy, flours, drinks, additives, preservatives and flavourings, then the digestive system has a hard time trying to get rid of it. If it doesn’t get rid of it, the food begins to putrefy, sending out toxins and making you feel awful. Stick with vegetables and dips and just one type of protein. The next morning, drink water to rehydrate and

make sure you eat plenty of fresh fruit, as the enzymes will to help digestion and drag out as many of the toxins as possible. When it comes to alcohol, prevention rather than cure is the best approach. The first thing you have to do is to decide on one particular type of drink and stick with it. If you’re going to drink spirits, I suggest you drink them with soda water, water, straight up or on ice. Make every other drink a glass of water. Have a wonderful Christmas and be kind to your body. I’ll see you in the new year, ready for a great 2016, full of energy, health and some new steps to change your life.

Menopause: Are HRT or Bio-Identical hormones prolonging the inevitable? Know the Facts

Can you remain on HRT or Bio-Identical Hormones for the rest of your life? Are you at risk of prolonging the inevitable? Many women have been prescribed HRT for years, even decades beyond the expected end of menopause. Is this really necessary? Unfortunately, when it comes time to look at reducing hormone replacement, often women will go through exactly the same symptoms of menopause she would have years earlier, though now, not as young or as robust in health to be able to handle it as well. The symptoms of menopause are only expected to affect a woman for 18 months from onset to completion, yet we are treating the condition for up to 20 years or more. In our western culture, our lifestyle goes against how a woman’s body functions, and we have forgotten how to pass on the important information about how the body transitions smoothly.

It is a lot easier than most women know, and are often shocked to find out. Menopausal symptoms arise when there is the sudden drop in hormones that cause the symptoms, rather than a slow decline over years. Your adrenal glands also produce hormones for a smooth transition as long as you allow them to. 1. Hormones are made from good cholesterol, which is made from good fats in your diet. Reducing fat to very low levels reduces your ability to make hormones, causing much more severe symptoms of menopause. 2. High carbohydrate diets produce more bad cholesterol, and less good cholesterol, reducing again the cholesterol available for hormones. 3. Stress causes production of cortisol, using up the valuable good cholesterol, now less available for hormones. Reducing stress, or supporting the adrenal system is essential. 4. Good bacteria in your gut are responsible for processing the hormones made by your adrenal glands ready for use, so keeping gut flora healthy is also essential. 5. Your liver is responsible for detoxifying old hormones so they do not recirculate. Living a healthy lifestyle, eating clean, and exercising are all very important in managing menopause. You can get off HRT, and get on with a healthy life. If you’d like to know more, call for a FREE ½ HOUR CONSULTATION with one of our naturopaths, where you’ll learn about everything that causes hormonal and mood problems, and what to do about it.

MY OPINION

CALOUNDRA BOUNCES BACK

OPRAH’S BEST ADVICE

Caloundra has a unique feel and a long history, but its heyday is yet to come, writes Bill Darby.

Christmas came early for Sami Muirhead when her boss sent her to see Oprah Winfrey.

I

think it was a reward for putting up with that guy Toddy I work with on the radio, who I do adore but is always infuriating me with his clever but crazy comments about bacon and beer. Or perhaps my boss thought a ticket was worth the investment to sort out my extensive psychological issues including Chocolate Addiction, Wine Addiction, Coffee Addiction, Instagram Addiction, and the big one: Handbag Buying Addiction (HBA). HBA shows no mercy and holds you in a deadlock grip. There are not many survivors who ever rid themselves of this addiction. The junkies all look fabulous with their clutches, totes and satchels, but they have a dirty secret, with dozens of bags stuffed into their cramped wardrobes. There is also a similar strain many women are infected with called Shoe Buying Addiction. So, back to Oprah. The theory from my boss is possibly one night with the Queen of the talk show may be equivalent to months of therapy. Oprah lived up to the hype. Oprah was warm and witty. The Oracle of Advice spoke about happiness, life goals and shared many of her personal stories of failure and success along the way. Oprah reminded us all of things we already know, but we forget to implement in our busy journey of everyday life. Some of her advice included: listen to that inner whisper telling you something is wrong with a situation; all the good lessons in life often come from

failure; and write down every night a few things you are grateful for in life. Her biggest tip that drew an ‘a-ha’ reaction from the crowd was when she talked about how so many of us suffer from ‘the disease to please’. We find it impossible to say no even when we are already snowed under with a trillion things to get done before the end of the week. We go to parties out of duty and we babysit a tribe of extra kids in the holidays because we do not want to be rude. We hear ourselves saying, “Sure I would love to do that”, when really all we want to be doing is sitting at home having a quiet drink and maybe dabbling in a dash of adult colouring in. The disease to please. It is a pretty powerful concept at this time of year. If only we had said no to one less commitment, perhaps we would all be soaking up this beautiful time of year instead of being stressed out with our to-do lists and endless shopping goals stuffed between countless parties, kid commitments and work deadlines. No is a powerful word and the thought of saying it is often more intimidating than actually saying it. So there is your little dose of Oprah for the week. Let’s all try to rid ourselves even just a little of the disease to please this week and then in the new year we can talk about tackling the handbag addiction issues.

W

ith its proud 100-plus year history, Caloundra has established itself as one of the Sunshine Coast’s true iconic destinations. Having been the top holiday spot for generations of Queenslanders, it wasn’t until the 1980s and 90s that this picturesque beachside township really started turning into a major population centre. This growth has in no small way been due to migrating seniors. Irrespective of what brings over 50s to Caloundra, one thing is for sure; the influx of baby boomers to the area won’t be slowing down anytime soon. All the economic indicators point to decades more growth in population numbers and with seniors living longer and healthier lives, the ageing will have more influence over our economy than ever before. From a business and tourism point of view, it’s great news that Caloundra has so much appeal to the over 50s. In 2013, focus groups identified safety and access to be fundamental requirements for an ageing community. Subsequently the cornerstones of Caloundra’s new streetscaping projects (soon to commence) include suitable bright lighting in parks and pedestrian walkways and a significant reduction in trip hazards beside roads and on footpaths. Bringing back the vibrancy of Caloundra’s shopping precinct is priority number one. Our beautifully shaded main street is changing for the

better. It seems that every few weeks a new café or specialty shop is opening in the CBD and the locals are discovering new reasons to venture into town. The Caloundra Street Fair transforms Bulcock Street every Sunday morning and the twilight markets along the boardwalk over summer bring plenty of visitors. As the new communities of Kawana and Caloundra South grow over the next two decades, the Caloundra CBD will play an allimportant role as the region’s lifestyle heart. Plans are afoot to build new residential style apartments in the CBD precinct that will be accessible, affordable and convenient to all Caloundra’s amenities. Into the future, residents of Caloundra will continue to enjoy just the right balance of CBD convenience with the coastal ambience that typifies our surrounding beaches. For all Caloundra’s quirky little ways, there’s a vision and a direction that is really starting to flow through the local community’s heart. While still being an important part of the regional landscape, Caloundra has its own its own unique feel. With the bright future that lies ahead, it just might be worth a closer look.

PROFILE

A RARE BREED

Talking women, babies and birthing are all in a day’s work for midwifery educator, Keppel Schafer. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

A

s a male midwife, Keppel Schafer is keenly aware his job has been gender stereotyped since the dawn of time. But whatever women can do, men can do too. Well, almost. “I think men in midwifery might come from a different perspective,” he says. “We haven’t had children. We don’t have any experience to impart, so it’s care based on the experience of the woman, rather than any prejudged experience of our own. “I think it’s a pretty tremendous career in health care. It’s really quite primary health care in that it’s really about working with women and their families at a well time in their lives.” Born and bred in Mitchell, Western Queensland, Schafer was the only person in his family to complete a university degree, completing his Masters in Midwifery at Charles Darwin University. “The reason I went into midwifery was because I was going to be a flight nurse,” he says. “In rural and remote type care, you have to be a midwife. An opportunity came up in Darwin. I was working in Jabiru, near Kakadu National Park and the opportunity came up to do midwifery on a scholarship.” Schafer and his wife moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2008 and he took on a position as a midwife at Nambour Hospital, where he delivered many a healthy baby into ecstatic parental arms. He’s now been promoted to Acting Nursing and Midwifery Service Director for Women’s and Family Services, leading the midwifery team. “When I was working more in hands-on clinical care, I used to get a lot of appreciation from women. It was only ever positive. There was the odd occasion where the husband is maybe a bit taken aback, but with professionalism and through being positive and working together, I’ve helped engage dads more in the birth process than they’d ever hoped to have been. Seeing a man being able to provide the care a woman provides in labour, gives them the sense that it’s okay for them to get involved in the care aspects. “I’m totally aware that it’s not the right thing for every

woman either. It’s the woman’s choice but the choice runs much further than the gender of the heath care practitioner.” One such choice is for a woman to have the same midwife – someone she gets to know and trust – throughout her pregnancy, birth and beyond. Until now, this was only available to women with private health insurance or a private midwife. But that’s about to change. With plans for Nambour Hospital’s maternity service to become co-located at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital, a new model of care will be offered as of February 2016. “As part of the development and transition of the service, a continuity of midwifery care model will begin,” says Shafer. “This means women have the choice to access a model of care where they have a known midwife

%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE

providing care throughout pregnancy, birth and postnatally. “It’s a first for the Sunshine Coast. Of course, we won’t be able to provide it for all women straight away. But it’s adding to the care options we provide. This is something the midwives have wanted for a long time; it predates my time at Nambour. “I’m very satisfied indeed. It’s the one thing that our service hasn’t provided to women. The continuity of care is well demonstrated in the evidence for reducing the rates of intervention and increasing maternal satisfaction. Sometimes in health services we might get the woman the clinical outcome but we didn’t get her there in a way she wanted to get there. That primary carer knows the journey that woman wants to take.” In between managing the busy Nambour maternity unit, Schafer takes up to seven trips around the country each year as a midwifery educator for two important organisations. One is CRANAplus, originally known as the Council of Remote Area Nurses of Australia, for which he volunteers. He also teaches at the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, based in Melbourne. For now, he’s gearing up for the busy Christmas and New Year period, a busy time in the maternity ward. “December is a reasonably busy month here at Nambour – and it’s a fair bit of fun. I can remember working night duty on Christmas Eve and someone takes on the role of Santa. These are often good times of the year. Kids are on school holidays, there’s often more involvement of families. Usually the media come to us – it’s nice to have feel-good stories around the first New Year’s baby or babies born on Christmas Day. There’s a midwife who likes to make special treats – babies get little Santa outfits, red and black bonnets and booties for Christmas. There are extra little things to make it more special. “It will be very exciting when we have the first baby born in the new hospital, which is scheduled to open on November 16 in the new year.”

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

EVOLUTION VS REVOLUTION Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

he Communist Party of China holds regular meetings which set out the government’s five year plan. This meeting recently took place and set the tone of the government’s social and economic policy for 2016 to 2020. There was little surprise, beyond the political rhetoric, that many of the medium-term policy priorities and objectives are consistent with the reform agenda established during the third plenum in 2013. The end of the one-child policy captured media headlines, since this was one of the few items in the plan that was more tangible and represented a significant change from the previous policy direction. In sum, the thirteenth five year plan

represents an evolution, rather than a revolution, in areas such as market reforms, financial liberalisation and industry policy. President Xi Jinping highlighted the importance of economic progress in order for China to become a “moderate prosperity” society by 2020. The plan is to double the country’s GDP and per capita income between 2010 and 2020. To double GDP by the end of the decade, the economy will need to grow at a further 6.5 per cent per annum between now and then. Some investors may be disappointed by the lack of detail in the latest five year plan, but we believe the plan has reinforced our view on the long-term economic outlook for China. For a long while, many Australian investors have viewed the opportunities (and risks) in China through the prism of commodities production and demand. This required Chinese manufacturing and investment to maintain a cracking pace that buoyed commodity usage and hence prices.

Instead, the pace of demand is slowing as the country undergoes a major economic transformation, which places a greater emphasis on the consumer and service-based industries. The development of healthcare, educational, retail and financial services represents the normal progression of a country achieving greater prosperity. It is, therefore, necessary for investors to alter the way they view China and focus on the opportunities in the burgeoning consumer-oriented society. Food safety and quality is paramount to many Chinese consumers and it is in this area that Australia excels. Local companies which produce quality foods and associated products for export markets include Bellamy’s, Tassal and Vitaco. rt Vs Science burst onto the Australian music scene six years ago with their catchy tune Parlez Vous Francais. The electronic dance track reached number two in Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown and since then the Sydney trio has continued on the path of popularity. The group is the latest act to be announced as part of next month’s OZFEST. The pop-up summer music festival will be held at Maroochydore’s Waterfront Hotel on January 24 and with more than 90 tonnes of sand being trucked in, a selection of local food and a stellar line-up, it will be an event not to be missed. Joining Art Vs Science in the 2016 line-up will be hip hop sensation and Aria Award winner Seth Sentry and indie pop group San Cisco. Melbourne based nine-piece outfit Saskwatch and Tired Lion, recent

winners of Triple J’s Unearthed Band of the Year, will also perform. Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group (ALH) Group entertainment manager Paul Prout says OZFEST has grown into an exciting and accessible pop-up festival. “The Australia Day weekend is the perfect time to celebrate our summer lifestyle and the amazing quality of great Australian entertainment.’’

ART JUST FOR FUN Life began with a rocky start for artist Antje Collis, but it’s been smooth sailing for the past 15 years with successful exhibitions all around Australia. Collis was a baby when her family came to Australia by boat from Germany in 1953 and her family’s life changed track when she accidentally fell from her bunk bed. Needing medical help, the family disembarked at the ship’s first port of call, Fremantle and so began their life in Western Australia, rather than in Victoria as initially intended. Embracing change seems to come naturally to Collis and her striking paintings show her love of spontaneity

with their free-flowing energy, vibrant colour, and uninhibited fluid lines, which she creates with an experimental blend of mixed media paints. “When I’m working, I need all my paints and brushes close by because I don’t know beforehand what I will need to make things work,’’ she says. “I never usually work on just one painting at a time – I like to have six or so on the go because this stops me from standing there and poking at the paintings. RETIREMENT PROMOTION

CHRISTMAS SLABS BRING JOY TO BUYERS You can’t fit these gifts under a Christmas tree, but Nature’s Edge residents couldn’t be happier.

W

ith Christmas fast approaching, buyers within Buderim’s Nature’s Edge master-planned gated community for the over 50s have been delighted to see slabs for their new homes already laid and construction well underway. Nature’s Edge Sales Manager Lyn Morrison says a number of buyers who had their existing properties on the market have now sold so the pressure is now on the Nature’s Edge construction team to lay even more slabs and get started on many more new homes. “It’s a great position for our new residents to be in knowing that their homes are sold and they can relax without the stress of waiting to sell their homes before they move into Nature’s Edge. We have worked with our construction team to get as much done as possible before the Christmas break and the great news is that many of these residents will be calling Nature’s Edge home early in 2016,” she says. Morrison says 11 of the 18 prestige lots within ‘The Rise’ release have already been sold with buyers eager to secure a home site with the best vantages within the community. “The Rise is an elevated release which boasts panoramic views and untouched rainforest as a backdrop as well as a magnificent 3-metre-plus high rock feature wall. With just a handful of lots remaining in this release, I am confident they will be sold quickly as it will be the final opportunity to secure a home within this premium stage.”

The newest residents of Nature’s Edge Mike Harman and his wife have recently moved into their new home at Nature’s Edge and couldn’t be happier with their new surrounds. “We’ve lived in Melbourne and Brisbane for our entire working lives but we’ve had enough of city living as we wanted to escape the traffic, pollution and general demands of city living. We had always enjoyed visiting the Sunshine Coast, both the coastal strip and the hinterland had strong appeal so this area was our preferred option. “From the moment we met Lyn and inspected the display homes and superb

location on the edge of the rainforest we instantly fell in love. It ticked all the boxes and more including the finish and quality of the homes, the wonderful location, which apart from the magnificent rainforest was close to all facilities we need and it’s still less than an hour to Brisbane which is perfect,” Harman says. The final plans for the $2 million Nature’s Edge state of the art Leisure Centre will also be released soon with a number of new features added to the original plan in order to accommodate the active lifestyle of the residents.

“Residents will be able to enjoy resort like facilities including a heated pool, spa, gym, massage area as well as a bowling green, tennis court and a media room. There will also be a leisure club with a bar, dance floor as well as a dining and entertainment area. Our goal is to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy at the Leisure Centre,” Morrison says. To arrange an inspection call Lyn Morrison at the Natures Edge sales office on 1800 218 898 or visit naturesedgebuderim.com.au.

MOTORING PREVIEW

A LOT OF CAR FOR THE CASH Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the KIA CARNIVAL

K

orean maker Kia has completely reinvented itself and its model range over the past few years. But clearly it is smart enough to know when to leave well-enough alone. Such is the case with Kia’s relaunched people mover, the Carnival. While these big family machines are forever trending towards being sleeker,

slicker and quicker than ever before, Kia is sticking with the old “size matters” recipe. Despite some extensive restyling, this recently-released third-generation Carnival remains in essence an old-style family van building its appeal upon oodles of space and practical if conservative styling. The key ingredients are all there - eight seats, 10 cup holders plus four bottle-

holders, a blizzard of air conditioning outlets and the kind of space and flexibility families crave. Beneath the surface, though, there have been some big improvements. The body shell has been substantially strengthened to improve safety as well as driving characteristics. Handling and quietness has been improved, interior finishes upgraded and

buyers now have the choice of petrol or diesel power. With prices starting from a familyfriendly $41,490, the Carnival is a logical option for those broods seeking safety, space and practicality, or for those whose duties include ferrying around the kids plus all their friends or footy teammates. It’s a pretty simple recipe, one that Kia has delivered with a few innovative twists in this latest Carnival. The wheelbase is longer yet the car’s overall length is slightly shorter and the roof line is slightly lower than before, meaning the Carnival is better looking and balanced, as well as being a little easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Still, don’t buy this car thinking it’s going to be particularly special to drive. We tested the GDI (gasoline direct injection) 3.3-litre V6, in its most basic form, the entry-level S variant. Above that model is the Si ($45,490); SLi ($49,990) and full-fruit Platinum ($57,490). There’s also the option of a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel variant that adds $2500 to the cost of each trim level. Having recently tested that engine in the Carnival’s sibling, the Sorento SUV, we’d expect it to give the Carnival substantially better performance continued over>

MOTORING

<from previous page over the petrol V6, which was competent but a bit underwhelming. While it matches smoothly with a six-speed auto, the V6 engine lacks a bit in torque meaning higher revs are often required to drag this big, bulky machine up hills. With a full load of humans and their belongings onboard that shortcoming would be magnified. The Carnival’s handling is also nothing to write home about - also a little surprising considering how dynamically impressive the similarly-sized Sorento proved to be in our recent test. Still, this is a car designed to be roomy and practical above all else. Access is outstanding, thanks to the sliding doors on both sides of the passenger cockpit, giving a wide, easy ingress to any and all occupying those rear seats. The so-called stand-up seats in the middle row improve that access by allowing the base cushion to slide forward and tilt upright, allowing the seats to slide further forward giving more room for the climb through to the third row. Those rearmost seats, too, are a clever arrangement - using a novel fold and tumble system to deploy the third-row

pews. When folded away they form a virtually flat, expansive cargo space that’s capable of swallowing up all manner of bulky boxes or family junk. With all three rows in use, though, that unused fold-away space becomes a very deep, well-like cargo compartment. That achieves two welcome outcomes. It prevents the weekly grocery shop from rolling around on the floor, as well as allowing luggage or other items to be stacked up high behind the last row of seats. Total storage capacity is 990 litres with all eight seats in use, up to 2200 litres behind the second row and a capacious 4022 litres if all rear passenger seats are stowed.

Kia says the Carnival’s interior has been inspired by first-class aircraft cabins with individual seating and armrests for front and second-row passengers, overhead consoles and air conditioning vents for each individual. The first-class claim seemed a bit of a stretch in our base model but perhaps not so much in the flagship Platinum trim which enjoys two-tone leather trim, electronic seat adjustment and heating, heated steering wheel, cooled glove box, tri-zone air conditioning and built-in sunshades for the second and third rows. The Platinum also adds radar cruise control, front parking assist (also on SLi), lane departure warning, blind-spot assist, lane-change assist and rear cross-traffic alert. Even the base model is impressively safe, with six air bags, electronic stability control, hill-start and brake assist, cornering brake control and roll-over mitigation. For a majority of families the entrylevel $40k price tag will be attractive, delivering a very affordable, serviceable and sensible everyday conveyance.

KIA CARNIVAL HOW BIG? The eight-seat capacity gives it an appeal few vehicles can match, and the well thought-out operation of the two rear rows of seats means it is vastly flexible. HOW FAST? Not very. The V6 petrol version we tested is certainly smooth and quiet, but the engine lacks a bit of lowdown grunt sometimes required. Potential buyers might want to consider the more powerful, less thirsty diesel option. HOW THIRSTY? Once again, the diesel might be the preference here with its frugal 7.7L/100km thirst. The V6 petrol is cheaper at the showroom, but will cost you more every time you stop at the service station. HOW MUCH? At just over $40-grand the Carnival represents a heck of a lot of car for your cash. But even entry-level buyers might be wise to consider the extra spend on the diesel.

with MWP’s man in the water

Well by now we know who the world champ is and I hope it is an Australian. Now, this weekend there is most certainly a bump in swell but with good comes bad so an ESE wind will be attached. Hopefully light early so get your butt out of bed and enjoy it. Slim pickings of late so grab what you can. Did I mention I surfed North Sumatra last month? By myself, just sayin’. Christmas is upon us so I hope you all have fun with the family and get the grommets in the ocean. Kalani Chapman (ex Hawaiian pro surfer) did a guest appearance last week at Beach Beat surf shop. Watching how excited the kids were was priceless. Have a great break and be friendly to our guests.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: You can get grunter and estuary cod at the mouth of Coolum Creek using prawns. You’ll find jew around both Bli Bli and the motorway bridge pylons with live herring the best bait. There are mangrove jack and mud crabs up in Petrie Creek. Whiting, bream and flathead at Cotton Tree are taking all manner of plastics. SURF: You can find chopper tailor on pillies right on dark at Pincushion with whiting taking worms along Maroochy Beach on the low tide. You may get a few tarwhine off the rocks at Alex with shovel nosed sharks after dark on big baits. OFFSHORE: The close inshore reefs of Coolum and The Gneerings are working well at dawn and dusk for Moses perch, Maori cod and sweetlip on squid and mullet. There are snapper, pearl perch and amberjack on the Barwon Banks. The Blinker on the Gneerings has been holding bait for some time with mackerel, cobia and wahoo proving plenty of fun. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is looking a picture and turning on the action for anglers with saratoga, silver perch and bass taking a variety of lures, baits and flies. Somerset is another lake working well with deep diving lures for golden perch and bass up in the sticks north of Kirkleigh.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] A strategic approach is the key to successful Christmas preparations. If you plan and prioritise, then you’ll get everything done without unnecessary stress. And Christmas Eve looks fabulous, as you party with festive friends and enjoy convivial conversation.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Unpredictable Uranus squares Mercury on Monday, when you’ll be more accident-prone than usual so slow down! Have you still got a heap of Christmas shopping to do? It’s time for gung-ho Geminis to look for gorgeous last-minute gifts that are clever and creative.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Clannish Cancer - you’re the keeper of the family flame, so be proactive about gathering loved ones together. But there’s no getting away from recalcitrant relatives, as the full moon revs up your relationship zone on Christmas Day!

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Party-loving lions are in the mood for some fabulous festive fun, and are likely to overdo the Christmas cheer (again!) especially eating and drinking. If you pace yourself, then you – and your digestive system – will enjoy the celebrations even more.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Uranus squares Mercury (your ruling planet) on Monday, so be very careful what you say. And avoid getting too stressed – work your way through your list one step at a time. But if you expect family members to be punctual on Christmas Day, then you’ll be disappointed.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Librans love the festive season because it combines your two passions – shopping and socialising. So it’s the perfect time for last minute purchases and party to the max! But, when buying presents (and attending post-Christmas sales) make sure you stay within your budget.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] With Saturn in your money zone, if you spend more than you can afford this Christmas, you’ll just end up with New Year debt. You don’t have to go overboard in order to have a good time. But you will need to be diplomatic with relatives if you want to avoid friction.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] The festive full moon boosts your holiday spirits … and your spontaneous spending gene. Strive to be responsible with cash and credit – and don’t let a persistent child, teenager or friend talk you into buying something you really can’t afford.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Keep things in perspective this Christmas. If you prioritise and pace yourself, then you’ll get things done without having a brain snap! When it comes to loved ones, expect the unexpected. Whatever you think they will do, they are likely to do (or say) the opposite.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’re in a fabulously festive mood, as you let your hair down and enjoy the Yuletide celebrations. For restless Aquarians, variety is the spice of life so the stars encourage you to balance being social with some quiet time where you can reflect on goals for 2016.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] The full moon powers up your peer group zone, so it’s the perfect week to enjoy Yuletide celebrations with friends. The full moon heightens intuition and compassion on Christmas Day – but it also encourages mega-emotional meltdowns so proceed with plenty of caution.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] The feisty full moon fires up your domestic zone so tact is required early in the week, otherwise you could find yourself in the middle of a festive family feud on Christmas Day. Emotions are running high (and patience low) so choose your words extra carefully.

THE LAST WORD

ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE Richard O’Leary takes a moment to be thankful for life’s simple pleasures. t this time of year it’s easy to focus on what we don’t have rather than what we do have, so in my last column before Christmas I thought it would be a good idea to write a gratitude list. I am grateful for: 1. My youngest son getting through his hospital ordeal earlier this year. Without a doubt the longest week of my life – it gave me a fresh perspective of what’s important, and what’s not.

what he wants to do when he grows up. “Part of the government?” “No, THE government.”

2. Two sons who call it how they see it: “Don’t sit on the remote,” my seven-year-old says. “Why?” I ask. “You’ll break it.” “Are you calling me fat?” “No, I’m saying you are heavy.”

6. My sons’ teachers. It brings me much comfort to drop the boys off each morning knowing they are being nurtured and navigated through all those day to day tasks and challenges.

A

3. Being the father of the future leader of the world: “I want to be the government,” my eldest son says when we start talking about

4. Being open to the words of wisdom of a child: “Daddy do you know why you look down when you’re sad? Because you are using so many muscles to frown you can’t look up.” 5. A wife who practises tolerance every day – it’s fair to say my idiosyncrasies provide her with plenty of opportunities.

7. The owner of Mooloolaba’s Yoghurt World who didn’t make a big deal about my youngest son dropping a full cup of yoghurt before paying – she just asked him to get himself another one. 8. The owners of Just Salmon opening

their doors a few hundred metres from where I work. For this time-poor Fishocrit (a vegetarian who eats fish) it can mean the difference between eating a substantial meal or struggling to scrape something together. 9. My dog Truman – despite the chewed shoes. He is always happy to see me, and every night when I arrive home, he races to the gate with that weird wag of the tail that makes him look like he’s about to take flight, lifting any worries off my shoulders. I could list many more – couldn’t we all? This Christmas I may take a moment of simple reflection before the opening of presents to be thankful for all the gifts I’ve already been given this year – the one’s you can’t buy from shops. Yeah right. I’ll just be grateful not to be stampeded by my two sons in the rush to the Christmas tree. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
