OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high-quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
merican columnist Bill Vaughan once said “The groundhog is like most other prophets; it delivers its prediction and then disappears.” Well, unlike the groundhog, and most prophets My Weekly Preview will stick around even after putting out this week’s issue with some fearless predictions for the Sunshine Coast in 2016. I have assembled some of the region’s best brains to get a clearer picture of what the next 12 months may have in store for us – some of the results will surprise, while others will shock you. Also this week you get to have a quick chat with inspirational lawyer and lecturer Simone Pearce, see who was out and about over the festive season in our socials section, and travel to Hanoi for its eclectic mix of the old and the new. In property we take a look at Bli Bli, a suburb which continues to go ahead in leaps and bounds. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
A LAW UNTO HERSELF
Simone Pearce of Woombye is a lawyer, lecturer, mother, sports coach, boutique owner and board member who has championed the revitalisation of Nambour. FIRST JOB?
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?
My very first paid job was probably umpiring netball, though the shop assistant/ kitchen hand in the Buderim Bakery was close behind.
The transport infrastructure. Making Maroochydore the Principal Activity Centre yet making it so difficult to get in and out of has choked the Sunshine Coast. Visitors to Maroochydore cannot be bothered travelling to other places, people who live there are really trapped there, and anyone else wanting to get in there needs a lot of time and patience. We missed a planning opportunity to take valuable tourist land and develop it as such, and place commerce in a town like Nambour.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My husband Scott, my beautiful children Grace and Jude, and Kirby, the very large reject guide dog Labrador.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I am just completing my Masters in Law through Melbourne Uni and have applied for a PhD in Law examining the access to and treatment of children with disabilities in sport. I hope to influence changes to the discrimination law that applies. I’m also preparing to teach Family Law and Sports Law at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2016.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Will be today.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
The day I realised that our daughter had a chromosomal deficiency that explained her challenges and difficulties and that she needed me to be there for her. She was six-and-a-half. We had been living in the dark until then, but I had always known that there was something going on and that she needed more help. I left my career as a partner in a law firm, where I had worked for 20 years, to be available for our children more. It was a turning point because I realised I worked too hard, I was not valuing what was important in life and that I needed to find a better place within myself. Great sorrow and grief came from the realisation, but great freedom and a chance to gain wisdom. Grace was a gift.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Since my family moved here when I was starting year two, 39 years ago. I live in Woombye on five acres. We settled here because it is central and close to everything. We have lived in this area for about 15 years.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? There is no better place in the world. It is beautiful,
IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
Not realising the potential I had for such happiness away from the safety of my original career sooner.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I am proud of the fact that I was able to walk away from the safety of a lucrative career that defined me, and do what was the right thing for our family.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
the weather comfortable, it is relatively safe, and everyone who lives here appreciates the way life ought to be.
Playing sport - touch, netball, running, golf, tennis, anything really.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
People who don’t listen.
Aside from my home, I have always loved Sunshine Beach. I remember the first time I saw it and I thought it was the epitome of what a beach should be. Now, some 30 years later, having travelled and seen China Beach, J Bay, Bells Beach, California and the Mediterranean, I remain of that view.
Badly. I have a habit of being too determined and not letting go until I have changed things.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS?
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?
Trust your intuition.
Montville or to Noosa, the Eumundi Markets, or Cotton Tree parks. They are the tourist highlights.
It is not what happens to you, but it is the way you react that defines you.

HIGH HOPES
Economic growth, environmental action and cultural unrest are among the predictions for the Sunshine Coast in 2016.
“While not predicting a boom, I think the Sunshine Coast economy will progress strongly through the year”
I
t’s easy enough to make bold predictions in a new year, but it’s more difficult to say why and how those things will come to pass. My Weekly Preview has gone for the tougher option and called on its panel of experts to not only unlock the mysteries of 2016, but more importantly find out what things need to happen, and the secret to making sure they do.
MARK JAMIESON, SUNSHINE COAST MAYOR What is your biggest prediction for 2016, and how confident are you it will happen? That the Broncos will win the NRL grand final against the Melbourne Storm – my confidence knows no bounds on this one! What’s the most important change you’d like to see on the Sunshine Coast in 2016? I want to see confidence grow across our community about the bright future we have before us. Our business confidence is at the highest level in the state and I am keen to see positivity build about the value of what we are doing now and what it will deliver for us in the future. What needs to be done for the change to actually happen? 16 My Weekly Preview | January 8, 2016
16.indd 1
We each need to take responsibility for our piece of the future – whether that be through volunteering in our community, helping to conserve important ecosystems, sharing a positive story about our region with someone who does not live here or supporting our local businesses. Contributing helps build confidence. What’s the biggest risk for the Sunshine Coast in 2016? That nothing changes – in particular, that we don’t start to see more federal and state government interest and investment in our region. How can we prevent that from happening? By pushing our state and federal members to do more on our behalf. At the end of the day, it is the local community who put them where they are – our community rightfully expects something in return. Predictions for the local government elections? That is a matter for the people of the Sunshine Coast. We must never forget that very important fact of life. Do you think the state government will survive the year? Yes I do. And if there was any risk that it won’t, I predict we would see the premier call an early election. Who do you think will win the federal election?
Again, that is a matter for the Australian people. As a mayor, you have to be independent of political parties and be prepared to work with anybody if you want to get results for your community. The last four years have thoroughly convinced me there is no place for political parties in local government.
MIKE HEFFERNAN USC PRO-VICE CHANCELLOR What is your biggest prediction for 2016? While not predicting a boom, I think the Sunshine Coast economy will progress strongly through the year, particularly in the growth sectors of health and education together with upswings in our key existing sectors – particularly tourism – and with building and property also improving. I am very confident of that continuing. What is the most important change you’d like to see on the Sunshine Coast? I would like to see much better recognition of and planning for the rapidly changing demographic/ population makeup of our region. It represents a great opportunity – but we must plan and accommodate for this
change which is already underway. What needs to be done for the change to actually happen? Specific and targeted planning – involving not just government, and other agencies but the business and wider communities to understand and plan for ‘the new aged’. What is the biggest risk for the Sunshine Coast in 2016? As usual, it is one of apathy – our belief that because things are so good overall on the Sunshine Coast, things will always stay that way. We seem to believe that there will always be jobs and a healthy economy, and that the lifestyle and environment will always be as it is and the community will stay cohesive into the future. While we might all want that, it simply will not happen unless everyone is committed to those goals and does something about them. How can we prevent that happening? Individual responsibilities and community involvement and communication. Predictions for the local government elections? Too soon to know – hopefully we can get a bit more sophisticated than the fundamentalist development versus conservation debate. Maybe we should take the lead from our young citizens at the recent Sunshine Coast Futures Conference who thought the umbrella myweeklypreview.com.au

mantra for our region should be ‘the world’s healthiest region’ – with ‘healthy’ not just being about physical health but a healthy community, healthy economy and healthy environment as well. Do you think the state government will survive the year? Not close enough to know – as is always the case, what the community and business want are certainty, stability and leadership. Who do you think will win the next federal election? Again it is too far off to predict such things – as they say, a week is a long time in politics!
BILL DARBY CALOUNDRA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE What’s your biggest prediction for 2016? 2016 will herald in a new era of cultural division in Australia, and around the world. The effect emigrating Muslims and refugees are having on western attitudes will heighten the racism debate, firstly in Europe and the US…#DonaldJTrump. People in Australia will weigh up the contribution the broader Muslim community makes to our society against the risks of home-grown radicalisation, albeit very much the minority. The Sunshine Coast hasn’t really been affected by this issue first-hand, but our time will come. As confident as I am this will happen, I’m less confident we’ll welcome our new Muslim neighbours appropriately. What’s the most important change you’d like to see on the Sunshine Coast in 2016? The Coast needs to reassess its attitude towards responsible dense development. The Sunshine Coast is going to grow whether we like it or not, especially with all the land around us being carved up. If the council doesn’t start making the positive case for smart
myweeklypreview.com.au
17.indd 1
well-placed urban density and innovative projects we could well end up being the Los Angeles of Queensland, a region of urban sprawl. What needs to be done for the change to actually happen? For an attitudinal shift toward economically sustainable development, the collective group of new councillors needs to unite in demanding a planning scheme that attracts the best and most innovative developers. At present, the Sunshine Coast’s reputation for highly prescriptive and heavily bureaucratic development guidelines see us continually overlooked by the big investors and major infrastructure opportunities. What’s the biggest risk for the Sunshine Coast in 2016? Our biggest risk is perpetuating the disconnect between the three tiers of government. This seems endemic here on the Coast. Time after time, we see the lack of agreement on what the priorities are for the region. It often seems like our politicians and councillors are more interested in point scoring for popularity through the media than collaborating. How can we prevent that from happening? Until such time as elected positions in some way become desirable to candidates who enter public life for altruistic reasons, strategic decisions and outcomes will remain motivated by self-interest and the need to hold on to one’s job. As an electorate, if we stopped using our councillors and pollies as punching bags and started taking a more pro-active role in contributing to our own communities, we might attract more talent to civic leadership positions. Predictions for the local government elections? There will be a disappointingly low level of interest in next year’s council elections. New candidates vying for seats will be few in number and will generally be of a low calibre. Mayor Jamieson will be confidently returned. People see that
he’s given 100% effort to serving the region in a statesman-like manner. Do you think the state government will survive the year? The state Labor Party will continue to hold government. The almost motherly persona of the Premier appeals to ordinary Queenslanders and Labor isn’t rocking the boat with any real change agenda. The LNP doesn’t have a popular leadership team. Popularity wins elections and whether or not LNP policies are any good, charisma wins votes. Who do you think will win the federal election? Malcolm Turnbull will lead the coalition to a solid victory in 2016. Despite his extraordinary wealth, he relates well to ordinary Australians. He’s a real person.
“... we could well end up being the Los Angeles of Queensland, a region of urban sprawl”
WIEBE TER BALS, SUNSHINE COAST ENVIRONMENT COUNCIL PRESIDENT What’s your biggest prediction for 2016? The world will see major movement on climate change at the corporate and government level. Australia will be increasingly isolated making it harder to attract investment and achieve foreign policy objectives. What’s the most important change you’d like to see on the Sunshine Coast in 2016? A stronger focus on design. Some major projects will commence and we have a chance to create a unique identity
that fits our lifestyle and place but too much of development is bland and boring and the opportunity can easily be missed without great design. What needs to be done for the change to actually happen? We need bolder leadership from our council in this area. Articulating a clear vision for our region that goes deeper than a bunch of motherhood statements. What’s the biggest risk for the Sunshine Coast in 2016? Changes to planning legislation at the state level threaten to erode our ability to make decisions for our region that allow us to preserve our environment and our lifestyle. How can we prevent that from happening? Council and community need to ensure that the state government understands that erosion of planning legislation is not acceptable. We will need to work with other communities and interest groups across the state to ensure the message is heard loud and clear. This will require input from professional groups (urban design, architects) as well as environmental and resident groups and organisations such as LGAQ. Predictions for the local government elections? The majority of councillors will be returned. Divisions three and nine will once again be the most closely fought. Do you think the state government will survive the year? Yes they will last the year. They are cautious not to make too many waves as they fully understand their precarious position. This is a good outcome as the ALP is returning a much needed focus on governing for the people of Queensland (as opposed to the businesses of Queensland). Who do you think will win the federal election and why? The coalition will win the federal election, the ALP policy platform may enjoy more support but no one wants to see Bill Shorten as Prime Minister.

PARK UPGRADE The sixth stage of the Alexandra Headland revitalisation project has been completed with improvements including a larger grassed area, new revetment wall and upgraded beach access. Sunshine Coast councillor Chris Thompson says the works also included the installation of new park furniture and extension of the coastal pathway. “Unlike previous stages of the upgrade, much of this work can’t be seen and includes important operational infrastructure such as an improved stormwater outlet and electrical infrastructure.’’ Construction on the next stage is due to start early this year.

Development records were smashed on the Sunshine Coast in November, with the busiest development period recorded by council in three years. The number of development applications lodged each month in 2015 was higher than during the same months in 2014. A total of 1278 applications were lodged in November – 361 per cent higher than in November 2014. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the surge in development was a clear reflection of confidence in the region.
SWIMMING SUCCESS The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Jan Cameron, who coaches the uni’s high performance Paralympic swimming program, was recently awarded a Platinum Coaching Licence by Swimming Australia. She is only the third woman in Australia to achieve the sport’s highest coaching accolade which recognises people who have coached athletes to medal-winning performances at the Olympics or World Championships. The award follows a successful year in which Cameron’s swimmers took home 10 medals and multiple world records at the International Paralympic Committee World Championships in Glasgow in July.
FLYING VISIT BY MAGPIES The Sunshine Coast played host to one of the country’s biggest sporting brands this week when the Magpies flew north to prepare for the 2016 AFL premiership campaign. Collingwood hosted a training session at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex on Wednesday. Collingwood chief executive Gary Pert says the region’s facilities perfectly suited the club’s needs. Visit Sunshine Coast chief executive Simon Ambrose says the visits from high profile interstate sporting clubs are an important achievement.

HELLO HANOI
Food, fashion and fables, the capital of Vietnam has something to suit everybody. By Rick Goodman.
H
anoi’s old quarter is brimming with life. A steady stream of motorcycles whizz by as we weave through the dense crowd of shoppers along Hang Dao. Above the narrow street plant-packed balconies poke from water-stained terraces that climb into the humid
afternoon sky. On the footpath an enthusiastic shopkeeper spruiks clothes that cover every surface of his little store. “T-shirt?” he asks. “Yes please - how much for the Tin Tin one?” A hopeless exchange of prices and frowns takes place before we settle
on a figure not much lower than the original. Hang Dao is one of the 36 famous streets in Hanoi’s old quarter. They are famous not only for their hyperactivity but also for the way each is devoted to a particular trade. There is a street just for shoes, for flowers, for jewellery and even for dried fish. Along Hang Bo we see rolls of colourful fabrics and every kind of lace, trim, zipper and button imaginable. It feels like a haberdasher’s dream. And as we turn down Hang Thiec the clang of hammers fills the air as tinsmiths work busily on letterboxes, kettles and other shiny items. The walking makes us hungry, which is a good thing - Vietnam’s cuisine, particularly the street food, is reason alone to visit. Earlier for lunch we opted for the popular pho: a fragrant rice-noodle soup with beef or chicken and fresh basil, lime and chillies. But tonight we try cha ca - a Hanoian dish - at the bustling Cha Ca Thang Long restaurant where it is the only thing on the menu. Turmeric-covered fish is grilled with dill in a hot pan at our table. We serve it up ourselves with vermicelli noodles,
Red Bridge in Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi peanuts and a shrimp sauce. Like most Vietnamese dishes it is fresh, delicious and enjoyably interactive. We head back out onto the streets in search of another local specialty known as Bia Hoi, which is basically draught beer served in a plastic cup on the footpath. The freshly brewed lager is sold for around 20 cents a cup at street-side bars and corner stores (or seemingly by anyone with access to a keg). Huddled on small plastic chairs we mingle with locals and travellers for a while before the comfort of our hotel beckons. The sophisticated Apricot Hotel in the heart of Hanoi boasts hundreds of

contemporary artworks by Vietnamese master painters - as well as the best views in town. From the rooftop pool and bar we look out over the nearby Hoan Kiem Lake and take in the city lights. We step onto the glass skywalk that runs alongside the pool and we can see a pianist playing in the lobby, 10 floors below our feet, before coming to our senses and scurrying back to solid ground. The next morning we take a stroll across the road - slowly, to let the motorbikes veer around us - to the serene lake we saw the night before. Around the water’s edge people eat ice creams or just sit and think under the leafy trees. But we learn there is more to
Hoan Kiem than meets the eye. According to local legend, a golden turtle emerged from the lake about six hundred years ago to give Vietnamese Emperor Le Loi a magic sword. With this sword the emperor grew strong and drove away the invading Ming army. Rare giant turtles are also believed to be living in the water today, while a two-metre specimen is on display at a temple at the lake. We stick with the aquatic theme and head to the nearby Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, where the wobbly wooden stars splish and splash across the stage. From here we walk to the stunning neo-Gothic, French-colonial St Joseph’s Cathedral. We continue on to the inspiring Temple of Literature, the nation’s first university, dating back to 1076. It becomes clear Vietnam’s oldest city boasts a wealth of history and culture. It is charming and museum-like and should remain so, with development restricted in the old quarter. But unlike a museum, Hanoi is loud, full of action and incredibly fun. *The writer was a guest of the Apricot Hotel. For more information visit www.apricothotels.com
Addicted to food, alcohol, or shopping to feel good? There’s a simple solution to break habits for the New Year! Feeling exhausted way before the day is done? You’d rather hit the pillow by 5pm than organise dinner? Are you lacking enjoyment from life, unmotivated to exercise, get healthy, or to do the things you used to love to do? Do you find yourself over-eating or over-spending to feel good, then hate yourself after? Did you know that we produce a chemical that controls our reward system in the brain, which also produces energy? When we become deficient, we can start to lose interest in life, feel physically and mentally fatigued, suffer with low libido, poor memory, and look for other ways to feel rewarded such as shopping, craving high sugar foods, even causing addictions to drugs, alcohol, and gambling. This type of deficiency is quite common, and is considered a type of depression, though it doesn’t always come in the form of the typical symptoms such as sadness, anger, or anxiety, which are all common symptoms of low serotonin. Dopamine, however, is the brain chemical that satisfies your rewards centre, so you feel exhilarated, excited by life, mentally motivated to be healthy and to achieve goals, increased libido, and stops cravings and addictions. This brain chemical then converts to adrenalin supplying you with physical energy. If you have depleted the nutrients required to make dopamine and adrenalin, purely through either over training, over working, stress, or a poor diet, symptoms of deficiency don’t stop there, it goes on to cause chronic fatigue, poor concentration, and in severe cases, inability to continue work. This is not uncommon and often causes detrimental effects on your relationships with family and friends. Dopamine and serotonin levels can be measured using specific medical testing. If you’re serious about your life, health, sports and family commitments, you should consider testing these brain chemicals as a regular health check, ensuring you remain in optimum health. You have a choice. Make 2016 your year to change the path of your life and health forever. For further information on this or any other health concerns, contact our team for a FREE ½ HOUR CONSULTATION or view our FREE webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Depression & Anxiety” at www.advancedwellness.com.au.

re you savouring the slow pace of the summer holidays? Our family sure is and we are trying to get back to basics a little more. That means less rushing, less bustling out the front door and more ice creams, more trips to build sand castles at the beach, and more time to actually all play together. We are still recovering from a crazy year that was too busy and too stressed. Play is an art we are losing as a society. I do not mean sitting watching TV or letting the kids play on their iPads. What I mean is being involved in an activity that is the here and now. My kids were spoilt over Christmas. It made me feel guilty and cringe a little to realise how much we consume. There was a toy Furby for my 4 year old daughter from Santa. A Furby is a toy that links in with your iPad and talks and tells you it needs a shower and needs to go to the toilet and so on. It is actually a bossy and demanding little thing. It looks a little like a cute Mogwai from the movie, Gremlins. I thought it was the sweetest thing until I could not turn the possessed thing off at 2am as it kept screaming at me to take it shopping. I was going to decapitate my daughter’s Furby if it woke my sleeping kids. My daughter will sit and ‘play’ with this electronic toy for hours if I let her so we have had to have a Furby freeze and rules where the little critter can only be turned on for a short time each day. Instead we have been trying to
encourage my daughter to play old school games that do not involve her sitting looking at a screen by herself. We have finally opened jigsaws and puzzles and other games that require thought and provide much laughter. I have a lovely friend to thank for reinvigorating my love of games and for teaching me how to sit on the floor and use my imagination to play with my kids. Kylie Martin is a local speech pathologist who owns a business called Chatter-boxes and uses the art of play to help kids communicate. Kylie is actually a kid whisperer. “Play requires us to be in the moment, it requires us to let go of our agendas, forget about our to-do lists and resist the urge to analyse what and why we are doing this thing,” Kylie says. So back to our holiday. During the week we made a road trip to the Gold Coast to visit my father. He has a flat and square backyard with nothing on it but a hills hoist and a shed. He was worried my kids would be bored as he had no toys for them to play with. My kids laughed and ran for hours playing with a hand held hose and a red bucket as they attacked their grandfather with water. I stood watching feeling so happy. That damn Furby could never win a water fight.

s 2016 gets underway, it is time to start handing out some awards. I thought it would be nice to combine my two favourite topics, music and sport to hand out the gongs for the previous 12 months. The Moving Pictures ‘What About Me’ Award - Robbie Farah. The Wests Tigers are a bigger disaster than the rumoured Bert Newton swimsuit calendar however the fact that he could be playing park footy for $900,000 this year, means Robbie may not be so hard done by. The Dragon ‘Are You Old Enough’ Award - Steve Smith. The new Aussie skipper had a wonderful year, over 1100 test runs, taking on the top job and hopefully getting his learner’s permit. For a man who looks 11, 2015 was a beauty, the only blot on his record was when he asked the ICC to change tea to little lunch. The George Thorogood ‘Get a Haircut & Get a Real Job’ Award - Nick Kyrgios. This moron was the talk of the tennis world in 2015 for all the wrong reasons, mixing bratty behaviour with some performances so poor Anna Kournikova was embarrassed. The fact that this knob is also sporting a bit of hair gear that looks like crop circles has only added to his all-round stench. The Enrique Iglesias ‘Hero’ Award - David Pocock. When the Wallaby that looks like he would have muscles in his poop isn’t getting arrested as he
tries to save the environment or single handedly stamping out homophobia mid game, this superstar is pilfering so much pill, that one of the weaker Wallaby sides scampered into a World Cup final. I’m telling you Marvel, stop clowning around with The Avengers and get this kid on the silver screen post-haste. The Taylor Swift ‘We Are Never Ever Ever Getting Back Together’ Award - Channel 9 and Cameron Smith. When 60 minutes interviewed Alex McKinnon, they had the chance to tell the wonderful story of a brave young man and the incredible family that is bringing him back from the brink, instead they used it to knife Cameron Smith. The Aussie skipper, chose the high road, flicked Channel 9 and led the Maroons to one of Origin’s biggest ever wins. Let’s just say I don’t see Smithy doing a guest spot on House Husbands anytime soon. The Simple Minds ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’ Award - Billy Slater. The Milky Bar Kid lookalike hasn’t been sighted since Origin 2 and with a slew of hot custodians such as Matt Moylan, James Tedesco and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck on the prowl, Billy will want to have a 2016 bigger than Matt Preston’s cravat budget.

MIRANDA KERR TAKES COVER Model Miranda Kerr arrived back on home turf ten days before Christmas to a bit of controversy, with her nude Harper’s Bazaar magazine cover being pulled from supermarket shelves. Kerr brushed it off and got straight into her promotional duties, including personal appearances at pop-up stores for her skincare brand Kora Organics. Kerr uses Kora products on her skin but doesn’t shy away from non-organic products that take her fancy. Her philosophy is “80 per cent health-conscious and 20 per cent indulgence”. Her favourite (non-organic, very synthetic) perfume is Escada Joyful and her favourite lip and cheek colour is RMS lip2cheek in Beloved.

RESET YOUR HEALTH Cyndi O’Meara says after a busy festive season it’s important to get back to basics.
T
he new year is a great time to think about your future direction and, for me, it’s also about coming back to ‘home base’ to reset after a busy festive season. Baseball players know that when they get to home base, they are safe. My house here on the Sunshine Coast is my home base. I find my home the best place for me to go and rejuvenate after a day at work or time travelling. It’s a place I feel safe, it’s a place where everything I need is available to me; comfy bed, good food, my special things and of course my family. I love my adventures, I love my work, but home is important to come back to and recoup. I was thinking about this concept recently as I also have a home base for the food and drink I consume. It doesn’t mean I can’t go on adventures and try new foods or eat out, but once I’ve been on my adventure I then go back to home
base, where I feel good and safe. So where is home base for health and how do you get there to recuperate, stay and get well until your next adventure? My home base is simple. I eat lots of greens and vegetables, meat, fish, chicken, seeds and seasonal fruits, as well as herbal tea, some nuts, coconut, cacao, unrefined Himalayan salt and clean purified water. My lifestyle home base includes swims in the ocean, walks, time with my family and friends, family dinners, time in nature, reading, meditation and quality sleep. Figure out your home base and visit it frequently knowing that home base has the capacity to help you live a full, energetic and healthy life.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
THE GOOD OIL ON OPEC Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he 168th meeting of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) ended with a communique that made no mention of a production target. Essentially, there is no limit as to how much oil member states can pump until OPEC meets again in the middle of 2016 - barring an emergency meeting. Clearly, there was fundamental disagreement between OPEC members. But the lack of agreement to manage production is consistent with the view that key members of OPEC, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, retain the goal of defending market share, rather than supporting prices. To this end, there appears no
prospect for an immediate return to equilibrium in the oil market, despite the persistence of low oil prices placing pressure on the finances of OPEC member states. Ord Minnett envisages oil prices remaining under pressure into the first quarter of 2016, without a shift in the production policies of individual OPEC member states or other unforeseen interruptions to oil supply. Furthermore, despite more negotiations around a collective effort with non-OPEC producers, there appears little prospect of such a deal at this juncture. There was an explicit reference that cuts to non-OPEC production would help rebalance the oil market – a process that is under way, albeit gradually. Ultimately, the supply adjustment necessary for oil markets will probably come from non-OPEC sources, but only once they have worked through the start-up of new supplies from long lead-time projects. Of course, oil is not the only
commodity suffering from too little demand and too much supply. The same imbalances are occurring across the spectrum of metals markets. What is interesting is that suppliers are responding to weaker prices by dramatically cutting costs and applying ever-advancing technology. This means that supply cuts that would typically occur are not forthcoming and the marginal cost of production keeps adjusting lower, thereby supporting ever-lower commodity prices. Ultimately, doing more with less will eventually plateau, but in the meantime, the commodity outlook remains difficult.

MY TIME
TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe discovers that sometimes giving up is the only way you can win.
drinking, swearing, eating fried food and watching funny cat videos on YouTube. It was the worst nine hours of my life. As we embark on 2016 my resolution is to stop lying to myself about making lifestyle changes. I plan to make better bad decisions. In a nutshell I’m giving up, giving up. So far it’s working pretty well. Although there was one hiccup at the Boxing Day sale at EB Games Gladstone. When the sales lady said “strip down facing me” apparently she was referring to my Eftpos card. Simple misunderstanding really. The girl was all good in the end. As were the police. They even chuckled at my Bill Cosby jokes. So as we crack open another year I want to wish all my friends peace, love and happiness. Who am I kidding? I wish you all a sex filled, booze laden 2016 and I hope you win Gold Lotto! Or at the very least a coupla bucks on a scratchy. As the new year dawns it’s time to reflect on the stuff I’ve learnt over the past 12 months.
S
ince we last had a yarn I’ve been flat out preparing to open my new business, it’s a gym called “Resolutions”. It’ll have exercise equipment and active wear for the first two weeks, then it’ll turn into a sports bar. No really it’s that nutty time of the New Year where everyone makes absurdly unattainable resolutions and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for always supporting mine. In the past I’ve sworn to give up

Bad decisions make great stories. Some people’s names are stored in your phone just so you know not to answer when they ring. Microsoft needs to invent a sarcasm font. Yep. That’s be such a great idea. No really, it would. We all need to boycott whatever comes after Blu Ray. I can’t afford to start my collection again. My life is a series of awkward regrettable events, separated by snacks. You know you’ve won an argument when the other person responds with “whatever”. I’ve officially run out of excuses for being late. Truth is I’ll more than likely be late because that’s the person I am. Never argue when you’re naked. I’m ready to retire and live off my life savings. What I’ll do on the second day I have no idea. When people tell you who they are you should believe them. Unless they tell you they’re Batman. If they tell you they’re Batman, nod, agree then excuse yourself from the table and RUN! And finally, I’d like to apologise to anyone I haven’t offended. Please be patient and hang in there, I’m getting to you. To celebrate the new year and to help you break your “no alcohol” resolution the good peeps at Manly’s 4PINES have released the Indian Summer Pale Ale. It’s an Aussie style pale, crisp and light in bitterness with a fruity aroma of passionfruit and melon, light in body with a solid hoppy character. This is the perfect brew for our long summer days, it needs to be served extra chilled and should be enjoyed right now and long after the sun goes down. I give the 4PINES Indian Summer Pale Ale, 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

MAZDA MILESTONE
RENAULT RECOGNITION
Mazda Motor Corporation says the global production of new-generation of vehicles, featuring SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY and KODO—Soul of Motion design, has exceeded three million units. The milestone was reached about four years after production of the Mazda CX-5 started at Hiroshima Plant in November 2011. Mazda’s new-generation lineup includes the Mazda CX-5, third generation Mazda6, third generation Mazda3, fourth generation Mazda2, Mazda CX-3 and Mazda MX-5. These models are produced in Hiroshima and Hofu in Japan, Thailand, China and Mexico, as well as being assembled in Russia, Vietnam and Malaysia. Mazda unveiled the seventh model of its newgeneration lineup at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The all-new Mazda CX-9 three-row mid-size crossover SUV is a high-end model with predicted annual global sales of 50,000 units per year.

Taumalolo, who works at Cricks Renault in Maroochydore, graduated from Renault Australia’s Apprentice Program. It is Renault Australia’s third annual graduation event. Cricks Renault service manager Andrew Seeley says the team is proud of Taumalolo. “Warner has proven to be a valuable member of the team and has shown great enthusiasm towards the Renault Apprentice Program. “We’re thrilled to see Warner recognised for his efforts and look forward to seeing him develop his skills further as a key member of our team here at Cricks Renault.’’ The 2015 graduating class saw apprentices from 12 dealerships nationwide graduate from the three-year program. It was the largest graduating year since the program’s inception in 2012. Throughout the course of the training program, employees gain extensive product training and full time employment within an authorised Renault dealership. Renault Australia managing director Justin Hocevar congratulated the graduates. “Each dealership makes a significant commitment to the program by supporting the student in full-time

RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME The suburb of Bli Bli has been talked about for years as the next big thing, it’s now starting to reach its potential.
S
ignificant investment in major new infrastructure projects along with a perceived lack of affordable land on the Sunshine Coast has seen stunning sales results achieved at a number of major property developments at Bli Bli this year. A combined 247 sales totalling over $65 million were achieved at Cutters Ridge Estate (76 lots) and Parklakes 1 and 2 (171 lots) representing one of the strongest years on record for the burgeoning riverfront community. The final 33 homes at the multiaward winning Halcyon Landing Over 50s resort sold out during the year and this drew to a close one of the developer’s most successful projects in south east Queensland. Project Director Chris Carley says Bli Bli has been a sensational location as the market has really embraced what the suburb has to offer including a 21st century neighbourhood shopping centre, a new 18 hole championship golf course which is all located just 10 minutes from the new Maroochydore
CBD and the beach. “Our Bli Bli project is the fastest selling over 50s community on the Sunshine Coast and there are now around 310 home owners who are happily living at Halcyon Landing,’’ he says. “We are now well down the planning stage of our next retirement living project Halcyon Lakeside which will be located at Parklakes 2. “Halcyon Lakeside will continue to provide wider streets and greener spaces

which Halcyon has become known for on the Sunshine Coast. “We have made a few refinements to our product and with over 450 metres of lake frontage, we think Lakeside is going to be very special.’’ Parklakes spokesperson Rob Midgley says 2015 was a year in which Bli Bli came of age. “At Parklakes 2 we released around 160 lots in three separate stages and the take up has been so strong that we have decided to release another 30 lots
in a new stage just before Christmas.” “Work on the neighbourhood’s one hectare central parklands which will include a playground and a café will commence soon and this will complement the existing 25 hectares of the community’s untouched bushland. “The final piece of the jigsaw is the new P-12 Catholic school and we are confident that an announcement will be will be forthcoming soon.’’ Recent REIQ sales data confirmed that the median sales price for homes at Bli Bli had increased from $340,000 in January 2013 to $440,000 in June 2015 and with the vast majority of land being sold to owner occupiers, the pressure is also on for those people looking to rent in the area. In the postcode 4560 – which includes Bli Bli, research indicates there is just 0.8 per cent rental vacancies which sits under the already low Sunshine Coast vacancy rate of 1.3 per cent with rentals increasing by 18.5 per cent over the past three years.

Well Happy New Year peeps! Did you score some of that swell? As predicted everywhere was crowded with Moffat Beach having in excess of 100 punters in the line-up and I am sure everywhere was the same. But getting in early does pay off although paddling out at 4am was pushing the light situation. Catching a wave in darkness certainly gets your senses going. “Use the force” my friend yelled as I disappeared into the darkness. Now, this weekend, Saturday will be the pick with a SE wind predicted. As for the year ahead, this winter will be all time! Four to six feet offshore every day. Well, that’s my wish anyway.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Small flathead and tarwhine are taking lures and baits from Bli Bli to the cod hole at the mouth of Eudlo Creek. Bream are about in numbers at Goat and Channel Island but berleying is the only way to entice them to feed. Mangrove jack and mud crabs are up in Petrie Creek and around the Bli Bli islands. SURF: There are tarwhine and shovel nosed rays along Maroochy north shore with tailor and bream at Pincushion, where baby blue pillies are the preferred bait. You can find sand whiting and dart in the gutters along Maroochy and Alex beaches. Pippies and sand worms are getting the best results with these species. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow the area around The Blinker is providing good catches of mixed reef fish using squid and cut flesh baits. Mackerel of good quality are being caught in the Coolum area, but are constantly on the move following bait schools. The Barwon Banks is the best place for quality reef fish such as snapper and pearl perch. FRESHWATER: You can get quality bass and togas on flies below the spillway at Borumba Dam. Recent rains will make the water cloudy, so the best bet is to use bright coloured lures suitable to the depth shown on your sounder.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) The only danger day is Monday, when you’re likely to charge in and aggravate a sensitive situation with sharp words and hasty comments. Instead, keep the conversation light and lively, and steer clear of controversial topics especially involving work.
TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) A personal or business relationship looks fiery on Monday, as the moon and Mars stir up passions and shorten patience. So it’s up to you to be a calm, steady and unflappable influence. For the rest of the week sport, hobbies and creative projects are favoured.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) The current star patterns are sensational for creative brainstorming with bohemian friends. But Mercury is still retrograde so choose your words wisely (especially where joint finances are involved). Plus double-check all appointments and meetings before-hand.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) With Mercury reversing through your relationship zone, you’ll have to work hard on communicating with family and friends. Otherwise there’ll be mix-ups. When it comes to a problem with a loved one, all is not as it seems.
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) The sun/Jupiter trine (active on Wednesday and Thursday) provides a welcome morale boost, and helps you sparkle and shine. Matters involving work, money or business are favoured, as you receive some good news or a lucky opportunity comes your way.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Friendships are favoured but (with Mercury still retro) be careful you don’t get your wires crossed with a child or lover. If in doubt then check! Jupiter’s in your sign, so strive to be more adventurous. If you worry about how things might turn out, opportunities will pass you by.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Mercury is still reversing through your domestic zone (until January 26) so family dynamics are frustrating. Time for Librans to communicate clearly and consult often. You’re keen to socialise with friends on Tuesday and Wednesday, but pace yourself!
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Have you been waiting for a lucky break? The sun/Jupiter trine could send an opportunity your way via social media. But you need to be careful when using your phone and computer, as retrograde Mercury scrambles telecommunications (until January 26).
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Are you being a slapdash Sagittarian? With taskmaster Saturn moving through your sign, success is coming – but it won’t be rushed. And it won’t arrive without hard work and persistence on your part. So avoid approaching people and situations in a hasty fashion.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Your mind’s full of ideas but, with Mercury reversing through your sign (until January 26) it will take patience to turn thoughts into pracical projects. And have you been having problems with a relative? If you keep doing what you’re doing; you’ll keep getting what you’re getting!
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Tuesday and Wednesday promise energy and exciting possibilities! The Venus/Uranus trine encourages doing something different, studying an unusual topic or falling in love. Aquarians - aim to get the balance right between coupledom and independence.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Good fortune is on your side this week, as the planets bless romantic and platonic relationships. And some Pisceans will get a lucky break via a social media connection. (But – with Mercury still retrograde – double-check all posts before you publish!).

THE LAST WORD
MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS Richard O’Leary says camping may not be glamorous, but it sure is good fun.
S
omeone once told me the biggest responsibility we have as parents is to leave our children with good memories. If that is true, camping certainly helps us to meet that commitment. There’s the same number of hours in each day, but you just seem to be able to fit more in on a camp ground. Maybe it’s the early starts. Just about every morning while we were away at Hervey Bay campers were roused from their sleep with the traditional stage whisper “Keep your voice down – everyone is asleep”. This was usually me, with the words uttered just loud enough so I could abrogate responsibility for any further noise by my early rising children. Maybe it’s egalitarianism in action. Sure some people have caravans, while others have camper trailers or tents, but at its core camping is about equality. Although I have to say there were more than a few envious glances at our
neighbour Jason who brought along a full size fridge with two beer taps protruding from the door, and a decal of Homer (think Simpson not the epic poet) on the front saying “Mmm…beer.” Maybe it’s the camaraderie. Sure our neighbours watched us struggle as we set up the camper trailer (it’s bad form to offer to help at the start), but once the wind picked up and it started to rain they came straight over to help us out. Maybe it’s the freedom. The freedom to shower when you want. I thought twice in a week was about right – to be fair, I was swimming every day. The freedom to eat vegemite toasted sandwiches for every meal, or anything else for that matter. For one dinner I had raw cashews, garlic and chilli olives, and salt and vinegar chips – washed down with an organic lime cordial and soda water. Freedom. Maybe it’s the memories. The campsite was a seven day memory
generator for my boys. A week with the undivided attention of mum and dad. Friendships forged by just saying hello to the kids on the next site. Walking along the beach picking up shells with their dad. Borrowing a skateboard from a neighbour and learning how to ride it under a big sign saying “No skateboards”. Lying on the sand with their mum. Eating ice cream every day. The disappointment of turning up to the water slide on one of only two days in the year it is shut. The elation of going there the next day. Water bomb fights on the beach. Climbing trees. Falling out of trees. Running around with glow sticks on the beach as New Year’s fireworks popped in the distance. It’s definitely the memories. Memories which will stay with my boys for life. Stories to swap when they get together as adults. Memories to pass on to their children. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
