OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
t’s easy to get caught up in the abstract when talking about children’s vaccinations; this report, that study, those statements. But a personal plea from a grieving parent really puts it into perspective. In this week’s cover story My Weekly Preview’s Candice Holznagel talks with Toni and David McCaffery about losing their daughter Dana to whooping cough when she was just four weeks old. Their story is one of heartbreak, courage and resilience. Also this week you get the chance to travel to Iceland in the middle of winter (it’s better than it sounds), have a quick chat with former MotoGP champion Chris Vermeulen, test drive the new Mazda MX-5, learn about the power of positivity from Jodi Chapman and find out why goannas give Sami Muirhead the heebie jeebies. In property, our suburb in the spotlight is Caloundra – it’s well worth a look. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
THE RIDE OF HIS LIFE
Retired MotoGP champion Chris Vermeulen became a proud dad for the second time last week when daughter Matilda was born at home in Yandina. And there’s still nothing he loves more than riding a motorbike with his mates. FIRST JOB?
born. There’s no better moment. I’ve won a world championship, won 15 world championship races, but nothing beats the birth of your first child.
I worked in my parents’ bakery in Yandina. Mum and Dad have had it there for 34 years. When I left school I worked there seven days a week to pay for my motorbike racing. My old man said I was the only person who worked for him that ate more than he produced.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I retired from racing three years ago. We have a small property in Yandina, 35 acres, so that keeps me busy. I commentate for motorcycle racing for Fox sport and I also have other business interests. Lots of little things. I’m probably busier now than when I was racing.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Wife, Toni, daughters Georgia, two, and newborn Matilda. I’ve got a little bike that Georgia hops on with me. She’s got a little helmet and boots – she loves it. I’m not going to push her into racing but I really think everyone should have the opportunity to experience a motorbike.
FIRST VEHICLE? My first motorbike I got for my first Christmas when I was six months old; it was a Yamaha 250. I was riding it on my own just before I was three. Some of my earliest memories were being three or four and riding it in my backyard. Dad had a trail bike and I tried to follow him and go over little rocks.
FAVOURITE BOOK? The best book I reckon I ever read was Andre Agassi’s biography. I’ve been a professional sportsperson so I realise what people go through to get to the top.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST?
The late great Barry Sheene who was a world champion and a mentor of mine, said don’t look behind. When you’re racing motorbikes, when you’re in front or leading, you have tendency to look behind. Barry was always adamant whenever anyone looks behind, you slow down. You’re not concentrating on going forwards.
I do like being out in the hinterland bush on my motorbike, Mapleton State Forest and Kenilworth State Forest.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
For me it is home. I have had the opportunity to travel around the world and I’ve been to some pretty cool places. I lived overseas for nearly 13 years, nine of those years I lived in Andorra, I’ve lived in Europe, America, Asia, but for me there is no place like the Sunshine Coast. We’re very lucky here, it’s hard to beat this place.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? The traffic. We’re not that populated yet the traffic drives me nuts. It’s just horrible. How we fix it, I don’t know.
Probably the World Supersport Championship I won in 2003 from a career point of view. There’s nothing like it. I was 21 at the time, the youngest world champion in that category.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Two years ago when my first daughter was
I reckon the main one would be when I had that crash in 2010 at Phillip Island where I did the injury to my knee. I didn’t realise at the time it was so severe and it was basically going to force my retirement from racing. Racing had been my life since I was 12 or 13. It took me a while to accept it. I had a lot of support from my family, my wife and my parents, I was so driven at going faster and being better on the motorbike but it took their support and the realisation that I did have a fantastic career, I won all those races and loved every minute of it. It wasn’t going to go forever so maybe it was the time to stop. I’m a very different person now, I’m very relaxed. I never had any patience. Now I’m a lot more chilled out.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? When I’m riding a motorbike. When I’ve got that helmet on and I’m on a bike, that’s definitely when I’m happiest. You’re free and you’re on your own. Whatever happens on that bike, it’s down to you. A lot of my riding was about going very quick. Now I ride a lot more for fun, going out in the bush with my mates. There’s just nothing like getting on a motorbike, there’s nothing like it in the world.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Be more patient and relaxed, it will happen.

COVER STORY
INJECTION OF COMMON SENSE
With whooping cough on the rise, the heartbroken parents of Dana McCaffery are urging people to get vaccinated. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“In those final days she started focusing on us… It was almost as if she knew there was something wrong… It looked as though she was pleading for our help”
Left: Dana McCaffery was four weeks old when she lost her battle with whooping cough.
D
ana McCaffery should have been celebrating her seventh birthday next month with her parents and three siblings. She should have been enjoying the summer school holidays, the beach as her playground. However little Dana never had the opportunity to experience such simple pleasures. The beautiful newborn girl was taken far too young at the hands of a vaccinepreventable disease: whooping cough. No parent should ever have to sit beside a hospital bed and watch as their baby’s tiny body is wracked with a coughing attack so severe they turn blue. No parent should have to hope that their baby’s gasp of air was not their last. Dana is one of an average of four newborns to die from whooping cough – also known as pertussis – in Australia each year. Last month, New South Wales reported a 300 per cent increase in cases and the Sunshine Coast Health Service predicts that our region is headed for an epidemic. Dana’s parents, David and Toni McCaffery have vowed to share Dana’s story with the world, in order to help spread awareness. “What started as a blocked nose escalated into our worst nightmare,’’ the McCafferys wrote in an open letter following Dana’s death. “From 11 days old, Dana became more unsettled at night and started to cough from three weeks of age. After she tested 14 My Weekly Preview | January 15, 2016
14.indd 1
positive for pertussis, we went straight to the hospital. “However, we were not alarmed because we thought antibiotics could treat it. Wrong. The antibiotics only stop you infecting others. There is no treatment to cure whooping cough and we had to watch in horror as the pertussis took its course. “Our tiny daughter coughed uncontrollably until she turned blue and required oxygen to regain her breath.” The McCafferys stood by helpless as their little girl developed pneumonia and
precious moments with his daughter. “Little babies tend to have their own personalities… in those final days she started focusing on us,’’ he recalls. “It was almost as if she knew there was something wrong. She seemed to be more worldly than our other children had been… it looked as though she was pleading for our help.’’ The 2009 death of Dana, followed by that of four-week-old Riley Hughes in March 2015, renewed the vaccination debate with a vengeance. The Australian Government has taken
“People started to realise that if they protect the mother and stop her getting whooping cough, it can protect the newborn up to six to eight weeks” Professor Robert Booy was airlifted to the Brisbane Mater Children’s paediatric intensive care unit. On the fifth day, Dana had an aggressive reaction to the disease’s toxin, which attacked her immune system and heart. After nearly 10 hours of blood transfusions she went into cardiac arrest and died. Speaking with My Weekly Preview almost seven years on, David recalls
a strong stance with its No Jab No Pay policy coming into effect on January 1. Parents who do not fully immunise their children are no longer eligible for child care and family tax benefits. It also struck a chord with thousands of new parents who support the ‘no jab, no visit’ campaign. Researchers and health professionals agree – the best way to protect your
newborn child is with a booster shot during the third trimester of pregnancy as children do not receive their first vaccination until eight weeks of age. Head of the Clinical Research team at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS), Professor Robert Booy, has spent the past decade investigating new vaccines to protect the community against disease. He says while most vaccines do prevent people contracting viruses, there are a couple of strains, such as whooping cough, where immunisation prevents only around two-thirds of cases. But there is good news: as more and more people are vaccinated, it builds a chain of protection. You are also more likely to have a milder dose if you do contract the illness. “Until recently babies got very little protection from their mothers. They are now getting a lot more protection that makes it safe,’’ Booy says. “Children are most at risk between the age of two weeks and two months. “People started to realise that if they protect the mother and stop her getting whooping cough, it can protect the newborn up to six to eight weeks. “By vaccinating mothers you do get that short-term protection of the baby that works really well.’’ In fact, it is more than 90 per cent effective. Yet in some regions, only 50 per cent of women are getting the booster. “The chain of protection comes about by immunity in more and more of the myweeklypreview.com.au

population,’’ Booy adds. “When the bug comes up against someone somewhere – a baby, a child, a parent – it can’t spread because it comes up against an immune person. “The chain is everyone in that circle who is immune.’’ Dana’s death left her parents shattered and distraught upon hearing that their home town of Lennox Head and the surrounding Northern Rivers region was a hotbed for contagious and deadly viruses due to low immunisation rates. “Toni was busy and… was out and about. We didn’t understand or know about the epidemic and what we needed to protect her from,’’ McCaffery says. “It’s a disease from the past that has made a horrific comeback.’’ The statistics don’t lie. The number of children with a conscientious objection recorded on the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register has grown from just under 5000 in 1999 to almost 40,000. Figures from the Healthy Communities: Immunisation Rates for Children 2012–13 show that 660 Sunshine Coast children under the age of five had a conscientious objection recorded while 1400 were not fully immunised. In the year until December 11, 2015 there were 20,670 reported cases of whooping cough across Australia. This is similar to the average number of reported cases for the five years prior. In Queensland, there were 1719 notification counts in the year up to December 20. This figure increased from 1377 in 2014 but thankfully was significantly lower to previous years. Dr Andrew Langley, Director of the Public Health Unit at Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service, says 226 Coast residents were diagnosed with whooping cough in 2015 as at December 21. This is about 40 per cent lower than the annual average for the five years prior. “In November and December however, a surge in reported cases has occurred, potentially signalling the start

of another epidemic,’’ Langley says. “Notifications for Queensland overall have also increased in recent months.’’ The Sunshine Coast has one of the lowest immunisation rates in the state. Recent figures released by the Australian government show that the Sunshine Coast has the fourth highest number of children under five who are not vaccinated. Langley says there are a number of reasons why parents do not keep their children up-to-date with immunisations.
they get a booster vaccination every 10 years to maintain good immunity,’’ Langley says. But with reports of vaccine shortages, people are asking how they can access it. “There is no shortage of the vaccine for children younger than 10 years of age in Queensland or the Sunshine Coast,’’ Langley says. “There has been a shortage for some time of the booster vaccines in the private market in Australia for people over the age of 10 years.
dangerous these diseases are and have access to reputable medical information, not Dr Google. “They need to go and see their doctor or access the State and Federal Health Department’s information. “We always consider the rights of others… we just want them to understand from us that vaccine-preventable diseases can be deadly.’’ As the family attempts to move forward with their lives – the memory of Dana always in their hearts – McCaffery hopes to leave one clear message with the wider community. “Pure and simple: vaccinate your child, your family and yourself. “You need to have that conversation with medical professionals and make a decision that impacts positively on your family and the entire community, that helps prevent illness and saves lives. “It is real. It’s deadly and we’ve seen it.”

Toni and David McCaffery with their children Aisling, 10, James, 12 and Sarah, 4. These include convenience; complacency, where parents may not perceive a need for a vaccine; and where a parent may have misinformation about vaccines or misunderstand how vaccines work. “The pertussis vaccine used widely for the past 10 years has far fewer side effects than the older vaccine,’’ he says. “Vaccination is well tolerated. Serious adverse events are very rare. Allergic reactions can be seen with any medication but are also rarely seen with pertussis vaccine.” Adults have a responsibility to not only immunise their children, but themselves. “People who were vaccinated as young children will have little protection unless
“This is understood to be due to an increased global demand for whooping cough vaccine. “However Queensland Health has been able to secure sufficient pertussis booster vaccine for the School Immunisation Program, which offers the vaccine to year seven and year eight students, and... to vaccinate women in the third trimester of pregnancy.” The McCafferys encourage people to keep a record of their booster shots to ensure they stay up to date. “It comes down to the choices people have. They all have a choice and can do what they jolly well like,’’ David says. “But they’ve got to realise how
• Parents who do not fully immunise their children (up to 19 years of age) are no longer eligible for the Child Care Benefit, Child Care Rebate and the Family Tax Benefit Part A. • Families will be contacted by the Department of Human Services and encouraged to speak with their immunisation provider about updating vaccination records or starting a catch-up schedule. • All states and territories will be distributing free National Immunisation Program immunisations for all children under the age of 10 who require a catch-up. • A free catch-up program for children aged 10 to 19 from families who currently receive family assistant payments will be available until December 31, 2017. COAST UNEMPLOYMENT RATE FALLS New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals the Coast’s unemployment rate has dropped below 10 per cent. The figure is one of the lowest rates in Queensland. Statistics show the unemployment rate of 9.8 per cent is significantly lower than the 14.2 per cent recorded in November 2014. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the youth population is not in decline, but growing. “In the end, jobs are created by business and we are creating the environment for business to succeed and grow and help create jobs for all sections of our community.”
CRUISE SHIP BRINGS 1000 VISITORS Sunshine Coast businesses and tourism operators received a welcome boost at the weekend when the five-star cruise ship Azamara Quest docked off shore. More than 670 passengers and some of the 400 strong crew disembarked to spend the day sightseeing around the region’s tourism hotspots. Mayor Mark Jamieson greeted passengers who were the latest to visit the region.

3104 The Sunshine Coast’s development activity has been ranked third in Queensland, according to the June Residential Land Development Activity Profile. In the 12 months to the end of June, the Sunshine Coast was ranked second in the state in lot approvals, fourth in standard lot registrations, third in new lot sales and third in detached dwelling approvals. The region recorded a 28 per cent increase in residential dwelling approvals compared with the previous year and had a total of 3104 approvals. In addition, 8866 new and established dwellings were sold during the past 12 months.
RALLY HONOURS ONE-PUNCH VICTIM
Thousands of people gathered in Brisbane’s King George Square on Monday to rally in honour of one-punch victim Cole Miller. Rugby league legend Wally Lewis was MC at the event. Eighteen-year-old Miller, who was a promising water polo player and son of former Mooloolaba Surf Club president Steve Miller, was fatally attacked in Brisbane on January 3. His funeral was held in Brisbane on Wednesday.
USC STUDENTS JOIN SUN BEAR CAUSE Four University of the Sunshine Coast students travelled to Malaysia recently to help design a brighter future for sun bears in Borneo. Stacey Goebel, Haijing Li, Kym Franklin and Jana Stadelman spent 10 days with the Sabah-based Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre and produced a new website and educational materials for the organisation. The centre provides care and rehabilitation for the species, which are listed as vulnerable following a 30 per cent drop in population.

FIGHTING FIT AT 80
Dawn Morgan is gearing up to celebrate her 80th birthday with an 80-kilometre bike ride– one kilometre for every year of her life. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

n January 19, Dawn Morgan will wake up before the birds, put on her coral coloured cycling jersey, hop on her Specialized road bike and cycle from Maroochydore to Noosa and back to mark the milestone of turning 80. This is the mother of three and grandmother of five’s idea of fun. “I have a group of riders that are going to do it with me,” she says. “On a Friday, my group leaves Fisherman’s Road in Maroochydore and we normally ride up to Peregian, have a cup of coffee and come back again. It’s about a 57-kilometre ride. I thought, I’ll extend it to 80 kilometres by getting them to come with me up to Noosa.” The lively Bli Bli lady cycles with friends three to four days a week and also does three to four ocean swims a week at Mooloolaba. In early December, her partner of 14 years, Richard Tallents, encouraged her to do her first triathlon with the Caloundra Triathlon Club. “I’ve never been a runner, that’s why I’ve never done triathlons before. It wasn’t my idea; it was all Richard’s idea. He just entered me into it, so I went along as all good sports do. I was a bit stiff the next day.” “Dawn has a great amount of energy, although an hour’s nanna nap in the afternoon has become a daily essential need,” Tallents says. Morgan discovered her love of cycling at the age of 64. “I used to read these little notices in the local paper about where the club was riding and what they were going
to do and I thought, how nice to be out with a group of people riding a bike, so that’s how I got started.” While she had a relatively late start with cycling, she’s always been a swimmer. “For as long as I can I’ll keep on doing it,” she says. “I just think swimming is a wonderful way of keeping fit.” She casually mentions she was once the New Zealand national springboard diving champion.

“I competed from the ages of 15 to 21,” she says. “I used to swim and I thought I’d try the diving as well and see if we could get a few extra points. I won that and seemed to be quite a natural.” She missed out on competing in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne but came to Australia to watch the games. “I was married and had a family by then and I didn’t start diving again until I was 32 or 33 to get my children involved. I did a Queensland championship and I got a second placing. After that I didn’t dive again.” Morgan raised her daughter and two sons as a single mother and drove long distances to satisfy their love of surfing. Having moved to Brisbane in 1966, she took them away in a VW Kombi van and often camped overnight at Mooloolaba Beach in the 1970s and ‘80s. She also spent 12 years cruising the northern waters of Australia on a catamaran. “I regularly say that some places where she swam were dangerous and she is only alive because she swam faster than the crocodiles,” Tallents jokes. While Morgan says she loves her weekly swims and rides, she doesn’t push herself too hard and does suffer “the usual aches and pains and a bit of arthritis”. “I’m trying to keep my knees going without having to get a knee replacement,” she says. I just keep going and doing it because once you stop and start seizing up, you just don’t get into it again.”

NEW YEAR, CLEAR SKIN
If your skin is looking a little worse for the wear after the indulgences of the holiday season, follow these tips to help clear it up fast. 1. Cleanse morning and night to remove oils, dirt and bacteria. Never use soap, which is very drying, and don’t just splash your face with water, which does nothing to clean it. Choose a nourishing, effective liquid cleanser suited to your skin type. 2. Always wash your makeup off before you go to bed. Sleeping in it will lead to clogged pores and acne. 3. Exfoliate twice a week with a gentle, exfoliant that uses natural ingredients like spherical jojoba beads. Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and enables

your skincare products to penetrate more deeply. 4. Go makeup-free at home. It’s good to let your skin breathe as often as possible. 5. Use a light facial oil or serum rich in antioxidants at night, instead of a heavy moisturiser. The enriched ingredients will help your skin repair overnight.
INSPIRED QUALITY
CHOOSE POSITIVITY Weed out negativity in your life and watch your health improve, writes Jodi Chapman.
I
f you’re struggling with motivation, happiness, and a positive outlook, perhaps it’s time to look at the negative influences in your life. Being surrounded by negativity creates emotional turmoil that may be even more harmful than an unhealthy lifestyle and diet. Constant conflict with others, poor relationships, or self-imposed negativity, such as low self-esteem or guilt, can become toxic to your nervous system, impacting every cell and energy source in your body, not to mention disrupting your sleep. When do you feel anxiety and when are you at your most stressed or depressed? How can this be changed? Bringing awareness to the situation not only allows you to avoid getting caught up in the moment, it can also help you to see the source, and that may just be enough. Being aware that it may be self
imposed, too much pressure for perfection, or deadlines are too short, simply restructuring your schedule may be enough to resolve this problem and get the balance you so desperately need back in your life. If the negativity is coming from behavioural patterns within your relationships, you may need to make some very important decisions about the value of those relationships. Be aware that though you can’t control others, you can always control yourself and your own reactions. Respond positively whenever you can with those you love, and know when to walk away from those very negative experiences that do not serve you. Be the change you want in your life. It is similar to Irrational Celebrity Dislike where you just do not like a famous person even though you do not know this person from a bar of soap. My Irrational Celebrity Dislike is Nicholas Cage. I just think he is a bit of a dill. And Kim Kardashian. But I think everyone thinks that self-obsessed celeb is annoying. So from one creature with a big booty to another, my Irrational Animal Dislike is the goanna. Even writing the word gives me goosebumps. So you can imagine my horror when we checked into a Rainbow Beach unit for our relaxing week away and there in our unit courtyard waiting to greet me was a huge goanna. It smirked at me when we made eye contact. Inside my twisted head it had the accent of the Terminator, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. It looked at me in slow motion and said in a mocking tone, ‘get out’. Yes. This was actually going on inside my head. We stayed on the ground level because we have little kids. I was already a bit peeved we did not have the ocean view of the other units. And then I saw the native killing machine. Surely the kids would land in the gardens if they fell over the balconies? You see, everything about goannas freaks me out. The way their tongue comes out of their mouth so
unexpectedly. The way those claws look like they could rip you to shreds. So the week became a crazy dance of me avoiding going into the courtyard, which made it rather difficult since that was where the barbecue was located and where we kept the kids’ toys. Goannas are a form of monitor lizard. They can grow to be 2.5 metres in length and can use their tails as a weapon. They swallow their prey whole and they are believed to have venom. I know this stuff because I have a pathological fear of them. I was bitten by a lizard as a child when I accidentally stood on it and I think that’s where my fear stems from. I was obsessed with watching my little toddler as he waddled around the garden. I carried a broom with me as I thought the goanna would be stalking him, thinking what tasty snacks the juicy rolls of fat on his thighs would make. And one night, my husband suggested we go and lie under the stars with our glass of wine as all the kids were asleep. I told him I did not fancy having my neck torn open by the murderous goanna and sat on the couch sulking. So I left Rainbow Beach a little worse for wear and defeated by my old mate the goanna. It was no doubt smirking as I left and thinking, ‘hasta la vista, baby’.

t is perhaps unsurprising that the Coalition government led by Malcolm Turnbull is supported by billionaires, given that the conservative policy agenda appears aimed at preventing a fairer distribution of the common wealth. What is puzzling is that any individual with a lesser net worth would support Turnbull and Co. This is particularly true of people with a family to support. The Liberal Party of Australia federal policy platform states that the party believes in ‘the family as the primary institution for fostering the values on which a cohesive society is built’. The platform goes on to state the Liberals recognise that the ‘interests of families should be at the centre of national policy making’. These policy statements are in stark contrast to the actions of the last two Liberal prime ministers, who have sought to burden Australian families with the economic responsibility for their children, well into their young adulthood. A suite of legislation has been proposed which would produce this effect. First up was the move to prevent people requiring income support from Centrelink from accessing benefits for six months. For families living in areas of high unemployment, contributed to by the failure of successive governments to support innovative industry in this country,
this policy would mean parents would either have to support their kids for six months after they left school, or watch them struggle to survive on no income. This policy appears to have been based on a view that school leavers should either get a job or enrol in further studies. That latter option was placed under serious threat by the move to introduce $100,000 degrees for university students. So parents can either chip in for these exorbitant fees or otherwise support their children through their studies, and thereafter, once they have been saddled with massive debt. Other moves hostile to families include the slashing of funding for schools, the imposition of a copayment for Medicare and restricting access to Family Tax Benefit Part B. Analysis by independent economic modellers, NATSEM, showed that these changes would impact on families in the lowest 20 per cent of income distribution, producing losses of around 7.5 per cent of annual income in that group. It remains to be seen whether Prime Minister Turnbull’s thin veneer of charm is adequate to win over the electorate later this year. Engaged and intelligent voters, particularly those with children, would be wise to carefully consider what those in the Liberal Party say about families, and how they act toward families.

Blue lagoon hot spring spa
OUT OF THIS WORLD
A trip to Iceland in winter is a magical experience and it’s a cheaper time to visit than the summer peak season. By Julia Waeschenbach
W
ith his bare hands and a small shovel, Ingi Thorbjornsson is digging his way through a thick layer of snow on the bank of a narrow ice-covered stream. Ahead of him towers the glacial arm of the mighty Eyjafjallajökull glacier. Behind him, on the other side of the stream, awaits a group of travellers. The tour guide stretches out his arm and helps one person after the other to cross the crystal clear stream. Then he leads them up the steps he has carved into the deep snow as they trek onwards. “Come!” he commands. On their own, the travellers would not have gotten any farther. But with Ingi paving the way, they stomp through the virgin snow to reach the shimmering blue, smooth ice of the glacier. From here, one has a view into the broad Thorsmark Valley and to the snow-capped chain of mountains on the other side of the valley. In the summer, the valley is a lush deep-green, a fairytale landscape that hikers love. But now in winter, it is even more magical. “Many people don’t realise how beautiful Iceland can be in the winter,” says Thorbjornsson.
Promote Iceland, the tourism association, wants to get people to come to Iceland in the winter. Thorbjornsson drives a Superjeep, a specially-equipped all-terrain vehicle and can quickly get out into the wilderness. In the middle of what appears to be a sheer endless landscape of snow, there suddenly appears a collection of cabins. Soft sofa seating and warm soup await visitors to the Volcano Huts located on the hiking trail of Laugavegur. In order to attract vacationers in the winter, the rates for overnight stays have been reduced by around 30 per cent. Tourist operators want to show people what Iceland is really like in the winter – freezing cold, ice, wind and snow. To say it’s an experience is an understatement.
WHERE IN THE WORLD? The Nordic island nation of Iceland is located in northern Europe with a population of 329,000 people. Reykjavic is the capital and largest city of Iceland.
GETTING THERE Qantas offers flights from Brisbane to London or to capital cities in Europe. From there you can travel via Icelandair. Visit icelandair.com.

fter a year of anaemic returns in 2015, investors are understandably cautious heading into the new year. Critical to the overall market direction will be company profits, as they dictate share prices over the long run. Weak earnings in the last couple of years have contributed to the recent pullback in the market. Overall, Ord Minnett predicts that earnings per share (EPS) for the ASX200 will decline four per cent in 2016. This is being dragged down by the materials sector (including miners) where Ord Minnett predicts a 31 per cent decline in EPS, and also by Consumer Staples with a forecasted eight per cent drop in EPS. Intense competition among supermarket retailers and weaker commodity prices point to difficulties in the near-term. More positive results are expected in the industrials, utilities and energy sectors with a prediction that the EPS will rise by 17 per cent, 16 per cent and 13 per cent respectively. Now, to specific sector and company opportunities where Ord Minnett believes attractive returns may be found. Firstly, Ord Minnett remains positive on companies exposed to the burgeoning consumer society in China. Many of the companies are involved in food safety and quality. While a number of these stocks have run hard, Ord Minnett sees further upside: • Bellamy’s – offers a range of organic food and formula products for babies and toddlers • Blackmores – develops and markets health supplements and vitamins • Tassal Group – Tasmanian-based
company engaged in all aspects of Atlantic salmon farming and marketing • Vitaco – development, manufacture and distribution of nutritional products with exports to more than 30 countries. Secondly, Ord Minnett is positive on the tourism sector, which is experiencing significant growth thanks partly to an increasing number of Chinese visitors. Opportunities in this sector include Amalgamated Holdings (hotels), Flight Centre (travel agency), Sealink (tourism travel), Qantas and Village Roadshow (theme parks and cinema). Finally, with the US Federal Reserve likely to continue raising interest rates, Ord Minnett is still keen on select companies that may benefit from a falling Australian dollar: • Consumer – Aristocrat, Caltex • Financials – Macquarie Group, Magellan Financial • Healthcare – Cochlear, CSL, Ramsay and ResMed • Logistics and transport – Brambles • Paper and packaging – Amcor, Orora • Real estate – Goodman Group, Lend Lease, Westfield. As always, investors should maintain a diversified portfolio that is commensurate with their risk tolerance. Australian shares should likely only form part of your investment portfolio. Books and blackboards have given way to technological advancements. Today, students carry a laptop and tablet and turn to the World Wide Web for research. Many schools have embraced the growing trend known as bring your own device, or the BYOD policy, which encourages students to use their own technology in the classroom. In order for students to get the most out of this initiative, it is imperative that parents and carers choose the right device for their child. Harvey Norman, together with The School Locker and Joyce Mayne, have joined forces to offer the BYOD online tool. The initiative gives parents and students the opportunity to research before they buy. For the bright-eyed beginner who needs a device that’s fun and engaging to the university or TAFE student, the website offers suggestions for all. At Maroochydore Homemaker Centre you can visit the three stores for expert advice on all your BYOD devices.

MOTORING PREVIEW
JOY MACHINE Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MAZDA MX-5.
I
t’s a tricky thing to define, and an even harder thing to find. Yet we all need it in our lives. And the more the better. Here’s one place to get it. The brand new Mazda MX-5. The long-awaited fourth generation of one of Japan’s most successful cars ever has arrived Down Under, bringing joy to the world, just in time for Christmas. Not that it’s all that much better, or all
that much different from the three previous models to have worn the MX-5 badge. But rarely has a car become so good by not changing much at all. Let me explain. Since its launch 25 years ago (yes, that long) – more than a million MX-5s have been made and sold – making it easily the best-selling two-seat roadster of all time. That’s more impressive when you consider it has
eclipsed classic machines like Britain’s iconic MGs and Austin Healeys – cars upon which the original MX-5 was modelled. The genius of the first MX-5 was its simplicity. It was small, agile and affordable, bringing the delights of open-top motoring to a fairly broad range of people. Yet despite its accessibility and youth appeal, the car attracted a fairly
mature demographic – middle-aged men old enough to remember those wonderful British and Italian roadsters. Interestingly, Fiat will rebadge this new MX-5 to create its own homage to another classic roadster – the Fiat 124. Mazda is hoping to target a more youthful market this time around, with some sharper styling and, most importantly, a radically lower entry price. Whatever your age, the MX-5 brings a whole lot of joy for the money. You’ll feel joy each time you walk up to it, because it’s beautiful to look at. A bit more swoopy and sculpted than the previous versions, perhaps, but unmistakeably cut from the same cloth. You’ll feel joy when you push the start button and the crisp, slightly raspy little four-cylinder engine kicks to life. You’ll most certainly feel joy every time you unclip the little latch atop the windscreen and push the soft-top roof back behind your shoulders. No elaborate electric folding roof here – just a fabulously simple, uncomplicated two-second operation to let the sunshine in, or keep the rain and cold night air out. You’ll feel joy every time you steer the MX-5 into an inviting corner and the little roadster digs in, gripping the tarmac and continued page 38>

MOTORING
<continued from page 36 effortlessly dancing from side to side without ever feeling unbalanced. You’ll feel joy when you scythe your way through the notchy little six-speed manual gearbox – short, sharp throws as each ratio clicks precisely into place. The biggest joy though, is that Mazda has taken a chainsaw to the price of this glorious little machine. You can buy it for just over $31-grand, which is $15,000 cheaper than the previous model and barely $2000 more than the very first MX-5 cost a quarter of a century ago. How rare – and how delightful – that Mazda has resisted the temptation to mess with a proven formula, returning closer to its roots than ever before. The engineers have eschewed little luxuries and pointless gimmicks to keep two things as low as possible – the price and the weight. It’s the shortest MX-5 ever at just 3915mm in length, and it tips the scales at barely 1000 kilograms – about 90 kilograms lighter than the previous model. That, in turn, means the smaller 1.5-litre engine of the base model is more than adequate. And those ballerina-like handling traits are sharper than ever. Not that the slimming regime will necessarily please everybody. Much of the
trim feels a bit plasticky – the sun visors, for instance, are quite flimsy – and there’s no glovebox or door pockets. The hand-operated roof, the slightly spartan look of the dash and the lack of any superfluous adornments all form part of the plan. There’s Bluetooth, sat-nav, electric windows, a decent audio system, airbags and high-tech electronics to help it handle, brake and grip better. But driving this new model remains a wonderfully raw, stripped-bare experience. For those who love cars, and particularly those who love to drive them, it’s intoxicating. It seems hard to imagine it’s a quarter of a century since that first MX-5 rolled off
the production line. We were all much younger then and, perhaps, better able to stoop down into its impossibly low-slung seats. That task hasn’t become any easier mind you – it still means driving with your derriere barely a few centimetres above the road surface. But that discomfort is worthwhile. So far we’ve only tested the new MX-5 in its most basic form, with that fairly modest 96 kilowatt, 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine. A beefed-up, 118-kilowatt two-litre GT model has recently been added to the list, giving MX-5 buyers a choice of engine for the first time. No doubt it will step things up a notch or two in terms of power and equipment, which may or may not be a good thing. Too much power – not to mention the option of an automatic transmission – might just be enough to compromise the experience. And that’s kind of the point about the MX-5. It’s not fancy or finicky. It’s not particularly fast or powerful. Not lavishly equipped. It’s just pure, unadorned motoring as it was always meant to be. Pure joy.
P.A. P. .A COMPARISON RATE*
MAZDA MX-5. HOW BIG? Unlike just about every long-running model on the planet, the MX-5 hasn’t grown with age. In fact this latest model is as compact, nimble and, most importantly light, as the very original MX-5 of the late ‘80s. The cockpit is snug but not claustrophobic. HOW FAST? Adequately, but not fabulously. It would probably get dragged off in a straight sprint by most family sedans with big engines – but around corners or darting through traffic, very few cars will keep up with the Mazda. HOW THIRSTY? Official thirst for the smaller, 1.5-litre engined version is 6.1L/100km. If you opt for the more powerful 2-litre version you’ll also spend more. HOW MUCH? The entry-level price of $31,990 is extremely tempting for a car with this much appeal. Even the 2-litre GT version, with auto transmission and plenty more equipment costs only $41,550.

GEM OF THE COAST Looking to buy and not sure which region suits you best? Here, My Weekly Preview, shares a snapshot on one of the Coast’s most popular townships – Caloundra. Words: Dorothy Whittington.
“T
he Gem of the Sunshine Coast” was Caloundra’s original announcement to motorists leaving the Bruce Highway and heading to the region’s first port of call from the south. Once the biggest of the early seaside townships, Caloundra became the family destination, the quieter and more sedate end of the Sunshine Coast where children could paddle in the still waters of Pumicestone Passage or young surfers could always find a wave. Bulcock Street, a dirt road in 1960, still looked like the main street of a country town long after it became a tourist centre but during the past two decades, Caloundra has shed any hint of being a bit tired and old-fashioned, and is now right up with the best as a pedestrian friendly, social hub where lifestyle meets amenity. Over time, original beach houses and old brick six-pack holiday units have been replaced by elegant apartment

complexes and Caloundra has become the apartment capital of the region. Unit blocks, many of them high-rise, line the waterfront from Golden Beach north to Moffat Beach. Bulcock, the only Sunshine Coast beach beside a traditional CBD, has been tidied up with the addition of the ultra-slick Rumba Resort precinct where cafes overlook the water and boardwalk and a landscaped park. Caloundra is big on parks and for the length of its coastline, the foreshores have been fashioned into some form of public recreation space. One of Caloundra’s strongest features though, remains its spectacular views both west across Pumicestone Passage to the Glass House Mountains and east to the shipping lanes off King’s Beach
headland, itself a highlight of the Sunshine Coast coastal path from Diamond Head to Noosa. Caloundra is tidily contained in a promontory, bounded by the ocean and Pumicestone Passage, that peaks at the King’s Beach Headland. It includes Kings, Moffat and Shelly Beaches and although popular opinion puts Dicky Beach also as part of Caloundra, the statistical district has it with Currimundi next door. With the Nicklin Way as its western border, it officially covers an area of 580 hectares and at the 2006 census, had 17.91 people per hectare, due mainly to the abundance of apartment blocks.
SUMMING UP As an old township in its own right, Caloundra is fully self-contained with a CBD, separate shopping mall, hospital, schools, a large entertainment and events centre, golf course and everything else that makes up a town, all beside the sea. It has a complete range of housing opportunities, from luxury penthouses to townhouses and residential homes.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? Newer masterplanned communities worth checking out include Stockland’s Bellvista and Bell’s Reach, AV Jenning’s Creekwood, Ivadale Lake and Meridan Springs. If a beach unit is what you are looking for, try Kings Beach, Happy Valley or the Golden Beach Esplanade. Older, traditional homes including beach shacks, can be found throughout Caloundra surrounding
the CBD and also in Golden Beach. According to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s September Quarter 2015 market monitor report, the annual median sale price for a home in Caloundra West was $437,000, Dicky Beach was $745,000, Meridan Plains was $429,750 and Moffat Beach was $623,500. The annual median sale price for a unit in Kings Beach was $392,000.

PROTECTING YOUR PROPERTY Leisa Toomey, Practice Group Leader of STOLaw, part of the Slater and Gordon Group explains the importance of engaging a lawyer when separating.
Why is it important to engage a lawyer in the early stages of separation? To understand your rights and
obligations and to ensure you make an informed decision on matters regarding children and property settlement. How can a lawyer assist someone going through a separation? By providing relevant advice and guide them through those things that have to be considered to ensure a fair
and just outcome for them. What is the most important factor/s to consider when separating? Seeking out skilled and informative advice from a lawyer that specialises in this type of work to understand what options are open to you to resolve your matters.
There is a common misconception that seeing a lawyer will mean you will have to go to court. Is that correct? No. Lawyers should always investigate settlement prospects through mediation to avoid unnecessary expense and the wasting of valuable time.

THURSDAY
with MWP’s man in the water
An interesting time this weekend. It appears there will be a significant jump in swell with strong winds attached. The crowds are slowly easing so enjoy what is on offer. My pick would be the Maroochydore stretch. Point Cartwright has been OK however it also tends to be a cast of thousands in the water. But, if you have time a road trip down to Northern NSW would produce a lot more options. And for those lucky enough to be in Bali four to five foot perfection! Now’s the time to start planning your assault on Indo – get motivated and get active.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Mangrove jack and mud crabs are up in Petrie Creek and around the Bli Bli islands. You can find jew and estuary cod around the motorway bridge pylons using live baits. There are flathead, bream and whiting from Twin Waters to Cotton Tree with prawns and yabbies the best baits. SURF: The coffee rock at Mudjimba is returning bream and tarwhine with the better quality at night using fowl gut. You can get flathead and dart near the textile bags at the Maroochy River bar, and quality tailor just after dark. OFFSHORE: Mixed reef fish are taking squid and fish fillet from The Gneerings to Murphy’s Reef. Black tipped reef sharks are a bit of a nuisance. The Barwon Banks are returning pearl perch, red emperor and squire using whole pillies and squid. FRESHWATER: At Borumba you can get saratoga on floated shrimp and flies. Lake Macdonald is the best for small bass and jew with bait out-fishing lures. Somerset Dam is firing for bass. You can get golden perch and jew on live shrimps and deep diving lures at Queen Street and down to Red Rock. Jig plastics in the old river bed. You can find red claw off any clay area.

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] The focus is on travel or education as you confirm plans for the future. A loved one wants to hurry you up, but it’s best to keep going at your own pace. You’ve got so much to do that the last thing you need is a domestic drama but that’s what you’ll get on the weekend.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Communication is the buzz word this week but (with Mercury still retrograde) make sure you consider what you say as you converse and chat. Powerful Pluto helps focus your mind but Uranus increases your inclination to put your foot in your mouth!
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Are you stuck in a career rut? If you resist changes at work, then you’ll be left behind in the dust. Look for exciting ways to inject fresh ideas into your professional life – but make sure you consult with loved ones and include them in your plans.
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Uranus unsettles your gypsy gene this week, as work and travel seem to be an incompatible mix. Be patient – your time in the sun will come. Attached lions – strive to get the balance right between personal projects and cosy companionship.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Life at planet Virgo can resemble being in the army, as your days are organised squeeze every last drop out of the time available. But you’ll need to be more flexible this week as Jupiter, Uranus and the moon toss your timetable out the window.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) This week the sun, Venus and Jupiter all encourage you to channel your inner hedonist as you eat, drink, socialise, entertain, love – and live life to the Libran max. And with Venus shifting into your home zone, plan to host a dinner or party sometime soon.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Obsessive thoughts and behaviour will get you nowhere fast (especially on Friday). Subconscious forces are driving you, so avoid making decisions that you’ll regret. The weekend full moon sees you at your best (and worst) as you swing between sexy and secretive.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Sagittarians are the zodiac’s masters of excess. Moderation and common sense certainly go out the window this week as you socialize up a storm, spend too much, overdo just about everything, and make a multitude of mistakes. But you’ll have a lot of fun along the way.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) This week the fiery full moon shines the spotlight on lust and loot. An intimate relationship could soar – or crash and burn. All business transactions must be examined, and a joint financial venture may cause some stress as you strive for a mutually satisfying agreement.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Many Aquarians are rebels at heart but remember there’s a fine line between being rebellious and reckless. You’re impatient to shake up your life (especially involving travel, education or your online profile) but don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater!
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) In 2016, task-master Saturn continues to stall work plans and raise your frustration levels. Be patient Pisces! Struggling from caterpillar to butterfly can be daunting but you’re slowly getting there. Red planet Mars gives you a warm and welcome boost on Monday, when your

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) This week, the Mars/Neptune trine heightens creativity and deepens compassion. So it’s the perfect time to express yourself or help someone in need. On the weekend, the fiery full moon and Jupiter (conjunct the North Node) are an impulsive combination.

THE LAST WORD
WHY HAVE WE FAILED OUR ELDERS? Australia is not such a lucky country for our pensioners, writes Richard O’Leary.
M
any Australians describe their home as The Lucky Country – a term which became popular after the release of a book with the same name by Donald Horne in 1964. What most people don’t realise was the author was using the term as a negative, rather than a positive. In a nutshell, he was saying Australia’s power and wealth was based on good fortune rather than good economic or political planning. More than 50 years later and there’s little to suggest Horne would have changed his mind, if he was still around to see the Australia of 2016. The recent findings of the OECD report, Pensions at a Glance 2015 shows Australia’s political elite have badly let down the country’s senior citizens. Australia had the second worst level of social equity compared to the 33 other countries used in the study, with
36 per cent of pensioners living below the poverty line. That means more than one in three pensioners are living on less than half of the country’s median household income. A shameful figure when you consider the average for the OECD countries was one in every eight pensioners. Australian pensioners fared worse than their counterparts in Estonia, Chile and Slovenia. The Australian government spends just 3.5 per cent of GDP on the pension, less than half of the OECD average. More than 2.4 million Australians claim the age pension – a single pensioner can expect $22,000 a year while a couple gets about $34,000. That means old Beryl and Bob who live just down the street from you could be surviving on just over $300 each a week. I don’t know how lucky they would
be feeling. This comes at a time when Australia has just come out of the biggest mining bonanza the country has ever experienced. During those boom years Howard, Rudd, and co squandered billions of dollars for electoral bribes courtesy of middle class welfare – pensioners were not so fortunate. I’ll leave you with the opening lines of the chapter which gave Donald Horne’s book its name – maybe the most damning assessment of Australia’s politicians since Federation. “Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people’s ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.” roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
