OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
icture this – you have put the kids to bed, all the jobs are done around the house, you’ve just started to run the bath and all you have to do is find a good book to read. You search your bookshelf for something you haven’t read. Nothing. You look in the magazine rack. Same. You think about taking the Kindle into the bath – but common sense kicks in just in time. So you are left with rare time to yourself but nothing to read. Disaster, right? Don’t let this happen to you. Beg, borrow or steal (maybe not the last one) some of the 40 must-reads featured in our cover story and have them lying around the house, just in case. Also this week, you get the chance to meet the Sunshine Coast woman who wants to write the great Aussie cricket novel, test drive the new Jaguar, and go on a holiday to Hawaii with the kids. As always there’s plenty of fashion, socials, local news, strong opinions, the latest technology and plenty of property. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
IN TUNE WITH LIFE
Buderim musician and songwriter Mishelle Bradford Jones has lived a rockstar lifestyle, dined with James Brown and toured with Brian Ferry, but stardom doesn’t compare with the satisfaction she gets from raising her three beautiful children here on the Sunshine Coast. FIRST JOB?
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
A cafe in Nambour, although it didn’t last long because I was given a serious talking to after pouring too much gravy on everyone’s Thursday night hot chips. And singing in a covers duo at Fridays on The Wharf at 16 years old.
When I lived in Burbank, California, my then manager arranged for me to have dinner with none other than James Brown. Regrettably at the time I was young, overbooked, tired and unimpressed. I do however remember him saying , “I’ve heard a lot about you darling, you got talent , don’t worry about what others think, just own it and go with your gut”. I now try to live by that mantra and have all of James Brown’s albums. Plus my mum taught me to write down your worries before bed.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? An album inspired by the rogues, poets and outsiders I’ve met in my lifetime, co-written with Peter Koppes from The Church. Gigs and busking and generally making a fool of myself as my alter ego Mish Mash, the kids entertainer.
WAS THERE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES… My hubby Paul, 13-year-old daughter Luka, eight-year-old daughter Opal and one-year-old son Huey.
The day I received a songwriters award from the Screen Composers Guild in Sydney, kicking a goal like that in front of my peers helped me secure my music publishing deal with Alberts.
FIRST CAR? A Honda Civic that cost me $300. It had rust holes in the floor so you could see the road whizzing by. It had to be retired after doing a spin en route to a gig in Byron Bay.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Selling my green 1960s kombi van and stealing bread rolls from Brian Ferry’s snack table when I toured with him. The rock ‘n’ roll life looked glamorous, but I was young and living on the poverty line.
FAVOURITE BOOK? Arhandati Roy’s God of Small Things. I was so captured I flooded the kitchen with water from the sink. Once a Wommie Wombat, a children’s story that I collaborated on for my friend Helen Shadforth’s brand Poss and Wom.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
BEST DAY OF YOUR LIFE? It sounds cliché but the day my first daughter was born the world stopped and I wept for 24 hours. I’ve never felt so overwhelmed with love. With my other babies I was just glad my amazing hubby got me to the hospital on time. I inherited the quick delivery from my grandmother, who had her babies on the back steps and then kept hanging up the washing. Family is everything to me, songwriting can be all consuming and without my loving family, I’d be like a balloon floating about aimlessly.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? We landed in Nambour during the Big Pineapple’s heyday in 1983. Back then Burnside Primary School had a chartreuse green shirt and you could wear fluro pink socks without being sent to the principal’s office. Plus, the local skating rink was within walking distance.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? The people! Sometimes I pop to the store to get milk and come back two hours later after chatting and catching up with everyone, much to my children’s dismay. Once many years ago, I was home alone and thought someone was trying to break into my house, (it turned out to be a false alarm). I wailed like a damsel in distress out the window while on the phone to the police and a neighbour came running through the dark in her PJs to ‘save’ me.
WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE ABOUT IT? It used to be more venues and music festivals but the culture on the Coast for artistic events has really made gains in the past few years. A coastal train would be nice. I’ve got a thing for trains.
Graduating from university. I was a daydreamer at school and didn’t do well, but in 1996 I got a scholarship to study a degree in music and then in 2002 I breastfed my way through lectures to achieve a teaching degree. I’m told I’m like a dog with a bone, once I decide I’m going to do something I don’t give up until it’s done.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Black lipstick and a hairdo that is 10 centimetres tall is only cool if you’re the lead singer of The Cure. Also listen to your heart, be brave, speak up, own your mistakes, never judge others, know you’ll never know it all.
TEA OR COFFEE? Double shot coffee with cream and sprinkles please.
NRL OR AFL? Netball and women’s soccer – go the chicks!

COVER STORY
40 BOOKS YOU MUST READ IN 2016
We love to read at My Weekly Preview, but the big question always is what to read. Selecting a book is quite a commitment in our time-poor lives, which is why we’ve come to the rescue with the 40 books you must read in 2016. Some have just been released, others are classics, while a few are simply superb. Whatever your taste in books, we’re confident these titles will keep you turning the pages.
THE EDITOR
THE READER Sunshine Coast local Judy Sangster has been a bibliophile her entire life. Her love of books covers a variety of genres, so My Weekly Preview asked her to compile her ultimate reading list for 2016. My Brilliant Career, Miles Franklin This well-loved Australian classic follows feisty Sybylla Melvyn living in rural NSW enduring a turbulent, dysfunctional life with her poverty stricken family during a very severe drought. Throughout the trials and tribulations of Sybylla’s journey to adulthood, she is determined to become a distinguished writer and not accept the easy way out of her wretched existence by marrying a wealthy suitor. While this story was published in 1901, it is still relevant. The Road Home, Rose Tremain This is a well-written inspiring tale about a Polish widower Lev who leaves his village and travels by bus to London to seek work and forge a better life for his young daughter whom he has left in the care of his mother. Lev has very little money; his English is just a few words learnt from a fellow traveller on the bus and he is catapulted into London life having to rely on his wits and the small mercies of a variety of strangers who help him to survive his bewildering new existence. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy,
12 My Weekly Preview | January 22, 2016
12.indd 1
Christine Wilding This 2015 publication is an easy to follow outline of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques for those who may have some knowledge of CBT as well as those who aren’t familiar with it at all. It is highly recommended to those wanting to improve their life using measureable therapy techniques that work. A God in Ruins, Kate Atkinson While it isn’t a sequel to her earlier award-winning novel Life After Life, the latest novel by acclaimed English author Kate Atkinson concentrates on a member of the same Todd family. Teddy Todd is an RAF pilot during the war and survives three tours, is captured and vows if he survives he will always be kind. In her usual interesting style laced with wonderful descriptive passages, Atkinson has written a captivating novel that explores family relationships. The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Muriel Barbery The title of this 2006 publication by French author Muriel Barbery is certainly curious. Predictably its relevance becomes clear as Barbery’s fascinating story about the concierge of a Paris apartment and its occupants develops. The concierge, Renée, leads a secret life not fully revealed until Japanese tenant Kakuro moves into the building.
The editor of My Weekly Preview, Richard O’Leary, loves nothing more than reading a good book with a special passion for Australian authors and political biographies. He’s put together a collection of titles he’s confident won’t let you down. To Kill a Mockingbird. As someone who grew up in a country town in New South Wales with more than its fair share of racism, this book spoke to me like no other, before or since. Harper Lee’s classic which follows Scout Finch, her brother Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus, in the sleepy Alabama town of Maycomb has been my favourite book for a few decades now, and I still find time to re-read it every couple of years. Illywacker. In Australian slang an illywhacker is a confidence man – a trickster, and the 139-year-old narrator of this book, Herbert Badgery is all that and much more. It’s an epic story of tall tales and barefaced lies – and entertains from the first page to the last. It’s no accident Australian author Peter Carey is just one of three authors to have twice won the prestigious Booker Award – his unique style and sense of humour sets him apart from most novelists. The Last of The President’s Men. I received this for Christmas and couldn’t put it down. Journalist Bob Woodward, who as a young reporter
for The Washington Post teamed up with Carl Bernstein to uncover much of the Watergate scandal, reveals the last piece of the puzzle. The book reveals the untold story of Alexander Butterfield, the Nixon aide who disclosed the secret White House taping system that led to the President’s resignation. Foucault’s Pendulum. Umberto Eco’s 1988 novel has been described as a ‘thinking man’s Da Vinci Code’. This intricately plotted masterpiece created by the Italian writer, linguist, and philosopher can be heavy going but it’s worth the effort. The book follows publisher Dr Causabon, who after reading too many manuscripts about occult conspiracy theories, comes up with his own with the help of a couple of colleagues. The problems start when they start to believe their own creation. Blood Meridian. Cormac McCarthy takes you to some very dark places and Blood Meridian makes his more famous book The Road look like a Disney story in comparison. Widely regarded as the author’s masterpiece it follows ‘the kid’ and a group of scalp hunters who massacred Native Americans in the United States and Mexico in the mid-1800s for the bounty. The well-educated Judge Holden, a monster of a man, bald from head to toe, must go down as one of fiction’s all-time terrifying antagonists.

THE COLOR RUN Saturday January 16 Sunshine Coast Stadium The Sunshine Coast was transformed into a rainbow of colour as thousands braved the rain for The Color Run, hopping, skipping and dancing through the five-kilometre course at Sunshine Coast Stadium. All about celebrating happiness, health and individuality, thousands young and old were showered in colour as they made their way through the on-course colour stations before dancing the morning away at The Color Run’s Finish Festival – and a little bit of bad weather wasn’t going to stop them having fun. Scheduled during the Sunshine Coast’s busiest tourism month, The Color Run attracted visitors both regionally and interstate to participate in the event. Photos: Supplied

AUSTRALIA DAY
In any one year around two million Australians suffer from anxiety. The mental health condition affects one in four people. The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is hosting a managing anxiety workshop to help people manage the symptoms and improve their health. Social Worker John Buchanan encouraged people to attend the workshops to understand why they worry and what causes their anxiety levels to increase. The workshop is free and runs every Friday from February 19 for four weeks at Caloundra Community Health. Phone 5436 8552.
GET SET FOR GINGER FESTIVAL
Maroochy Surf Club teen Ella Brown, 19, is set to compete at the fifth annual Maroochy Classic Carnival next weekend. Ella completed round five and six of the NutriGrain Ironwoman Series on the weekend and has finished 10th overall. With a prize pool of $40,000 up for grabs at the January 30 and 31 event, she is hoping her training and competing will pay off. “It’s always thrilling to race in front of family, friends and the young nippers from Maroochydore,’’ Brown says.
The threeday Ginger Flower and Food Festival will get underway today. Garden lovers can view striking ornamental gingers and heliconias, which are available to purchase, as well as attend information sessions by gardening experts. There will also be live cooking demonstrations by chefs including Matt Golinski. Children can participate in activities including an interactive workshop. The free event is at the Ginger Factory in Yandina from January 22 to 24.

SMALL SEAL WITH A BIG APPETITE SEA LIFE Mooloolaba introduced its newest resident last week. Moana is a long-nosed fur seal rescued as part of the aquarium’s marine protection and rehabilitation program. The one-yearold pup was found stranded on a Coffs Harbour Beach in November and had sustained a serious eye injury that left her permanently visually impaired. Mammal manager Jess Heading said Moana is the smallest seal at the park but eats two kilograms of fish daily, including her favourite foods squid and octopus.
Work on the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is ramping up with two towercranes being dismantled as remaining building works are completed and scaffolding completely removed by mid-February. Services will ramp up inside the main hospital building structure, with commissioning and on-site validation taking place. The information and communication technology network will also go live and all fixed and loose medical equipment will be delivered to site and undergo testing, tagging and placement in its final locations. In 2015 more than a million man hours and 1500 workers were committed to the project.
CARAVAN PARK SHOULD GO, SAYS HODGSON Sunshine Coast division four candidate Charles Hodgson has thrown his support behind the closure of the Mooloolaba Esplanade Beachside Caravan Park. He said the decision to close the caravan park would open up the space for greater public use and far greater economic benefit. “While the caravan park has been identified as injecting $1.4 million into the local economy, the economic report prepared as part of the Place Making Draft Master Plan indicates that the economic benefit could be as much as 12 times what the caravan park generates,’’ he said. “Exempting the caravan park land in future development, materially affects the options available to achieve maximised outcomes for a revitalised Mooloolaba.’’

Around 150 of the world’s leading property educators and researchers gathered on the Coast this week for the 2016 Pacific Rim Real Estate Society Conference. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the conference, held at USC, provided important exposure for a number of the region’s key investment projects. It was an opportunity to showcase the Coast’s growth and projects including the airport expansion initiative, solar farm and Maroochy CBD, he said.
MERCER LIVES UP TO HER NAME Noosa’s Jordan Mercer is celebrating this week after claiming her maiden Nutri-Grain series win in Cronulla at the weekend. She took the crown from Noosa clubmate Kristy Higgison who was tied with Mercer going into the final round. The 22-year-old has been competing for six years to secure the title. Her win follows in the wake of her father Darren who won the first of eight titles in the 1986/87 series.

PROFILE
WRITING THE GREAT CRICKET NOVEL Eudlo writer Inga Simpson is mixing work with pleasure as she watches the cricket on TV over summer. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
I
nga Simpson loves her cricket. But when she switches on the TV over summer, she’s doing more than just watching two teams battle it out over a small, hard red ball. She’s paying close attention to everything from the way the players move to the distinctive crack of the ball on willow. And unlike those of us who spend long summer days in front of the cricket, nodding off on the couch to the soothing commentary, Simpson gets to call it work. Last October, the Eudlo writer won a Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards fellowship, receiving $15,000 to research and develop her fourth novel, Willowman, inspired by her favourite sport. Simpson began her career as a professional writer for government before gaining a PhD in creative writing, which was always her dream. “At 11 or 12 I verbalised that I wanted to be a writer and my parents promptly told me it wasn’t realistic so I went off to uni and had regular jobs, worked for the federal government. In the end the internal politics and working for a big organisation wore me down. I had fantastic jobs, but I didn’t think it was for me; I needed to be doing something creative.” Hachette Australia published her first novel, Mr Wigg in 2013, followed by Nest in 2014. Her third novel, Where the Trees Were will be published at the end of March and she has a nature writing memoir due out in 2017. But for now, she has her eyes planted firmly on the cricket. “Cricket is a really complex game,” says Simpson. “I don’t often have time to sit around and watch a whole test, but maybe I can justify it while writing this book. “There’s a lot to it, the players and their characters and back stories. The more you follow it and the more you know about it, the richer experience it is. I enjoy that long day. It can shift and change a lot in that time. There’s a lot of skill and a lot of rules, but there are these endless variations to that. I find there’s a lot of drama and intrigue to it. At the national level, there’s often a lot at stake. I see
the drama and tactics in it.” The novel will follow the stories of a young cricketer on the rise and a traditional bat maker, whose paths are linked. “It’s just ideas at this stage. I’m thinking he’ll make a particular bat for this promising young player and follow his progress. I’m not sure when it will start but it will end with the rise of Twenty20 cricket and the big, heavy, mass produced bats.” The idea came to her when she was researching Mr Wigg and came across a story about a bat maker.
%N 10T0 ALIA R S AU MADE
“The way he described the willow as having almost magical qualities appealed to me,” she says. “I’m really into trees. There is a specific willow you use for cricket bats which is only grown in a few areas of Victoria. I need to do practical research and go to Victoria and see willow being grown. There’s a lot to it, it’s very hands-on and interesting to me.” Mr Wigg was shortlisted for an Indie Award and longlisted for the Dobbie Award and Nest was longlisted for the 2015 Miles Franklin Literary Award and the Stella Prize. Willowman may eclipse both of those successes because in a way, Simpson has been researching it her whole life. “I’m a cricket nut,” she says. “Since I was little kid, I’ve been mad about it. I grew up in the era when it was most interesting,” she says. “Lillee, Thomson, Marsh, Chappell – the West Indians were really good. It was all over the news and it was pretty exciting. I have to say, it’s less so these days. The players are more politically correct and fitter and healthier. There were some really hot-headed players back in those days.” The second nudge to write the book came when she read an article about how America has its great baseball novels, but asked: where is Australia’s great cricket novel? “When I read that, I thought, I can do it.” The third push came when Australian batsman Phillip Hughes was killed while batting. “I was following that match because if he did well, there was a good chance of him getting back in the team. I couldn’t understand why he was stuck on 63. I thought, what’s happened? I saw early footage of him being struck and falling down. That really affected me. I was really fond of him and really keen for him to get back. He never really fulfilled his promise. He never got to finish the job. I gather he was a good fellow. “One way to think about it, with the young player in my novel, is he will be a Queenslander and we’ve been underrepresented. It will be a way of imagining the career that Hughes might have had. I can make it up and finish it for him.”

MATHS WHIZ CALCULATES BUSINESS SUCCESS By Candice Holznagel
T
wenty years ago Mel Myers gained state-wide media attention as a boy genius. At the age of 13, the Sunshine Coast teen was studying degree units in mathematics and statistics through the University of Southern Queensland. By the age of 14 he was enrolled in university full time, becoming the youngest Queenslander to ever do so. Two decades on and this mathematical prodigy has turned to the world’s fastest growing industry – technology. “At the age of 12 you could say ignorance is bliss,’’ Myers says. “I had my heart set on, quite younger than that, to be a mathematician. I didn’t know what a mathematician was and whether there was a need for it. “As I got older I started to realise that the reality is… I might enjoy maths in its purest form but at some point there is a limit to how far you can take that passion. “That kind of naturally fell into IT and in 1994, at about 13, I fell into websites.’’ Myers designed his first website – for
Buderim’s St Mark’s Anglican Church – when he was 14. Today he owns Mooloolaba digital agency Jetpack and has designed websites for brands including NRL, ESPN and Cricket Australia. But it is his latest project which is predicted to make an impact on the global scale. Boxbrownie.com is the creation of
Myers, real estate photographer Craig Morrison and IT specialist Brad Filliponi. The company has recorded a growth of more than 37 per cent each month since its launch. As an online business it offers clients a photo editing service. “These days, online shops and traditional advertising methods are competing head on and it has become
even more critical to create an image that cuts through the clutter and does not cost a fortune,’’ Myers says. “This is where Box Brownie comes into its own. Cluttered or nonprofessional images are transformed into clean, well lit pictures. “Most people have a good camera and can take a reasonable picture. In order to prepare this for use on a web page or in advertising, it often needs quite a lot of clipping or other professional style enhancement.’’ The company has a pool of editors who work on the images before they are returned to the client who can download them from the website. The service has particularly been welcomed by real estate agents but the team behind Box Brownie is focusing on the retail, automotive and marine sectors. “There is no lack of market here but on a global scale this could be monstrous,’’ Myers says. “The market is definitely there.” The company has already been approached by global investors and the team hopes to launch overseas offices in London and New York.

LOCAL NEWS
MARKET REDESIGNED
B
uying local and supporting regional farmers is more than a social trend – it is a movement that continues to gain momentum. It’s no surprise then that a recent decision to go back-to-basics with the Big Top Farmers Markets has been successful. Operator Shane Stanley has scaled back the markets and launched the Farmer’s Quarter at the Maroochydore centre.
The restructured markets were launched just before Christmas and Stanley says it has been well received. “It’s clear that our decision to focus exclusively on local fresh food has proven to be a real winner. “Trade figures were outstanding over the festive season and there’s no reason why this won’t continue, as it’s clear to customers what our offer is and there’s a much better atmosphere and shopping experience. “We’ve also had a number of high quality stallholders take up space within the markets and there is interest from a few more farmers keen to join us when their produce is in season over the next few weeks.” The markets, which trade Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, aim to promote local growers and encourage the community to support the industry while eating healthy.

Eyeshadows in sunset hues of orange, ochre and apricot are tipped to be a big trend in 2016. Believe it or not, orange is a colour that contrasts well with every eye colour, but you need to find the right hue to complement your skin tone. Soft, earthy oranges flatter paler skin tones, while deeper, richer oranges look good on darker complexions.

MICROBEAD-FREE EXFOLIANT Big news in the beauty world is that Coles and Woolworths are phasing out products containing microbeads – tiny plastic beads that contaminate our oceans and waterways and are in everything from body scrubs and exfoliants to cleansers and face washes. Their 2-in-1 Resurfacing Exfoliant is a gentle, deep cleansing exfoliant that uses jojoba floraspheres and bamboo stem particles that remove dead skin cells, leaving the complexion renewed, refined and refreshed. NO LONGER HAPPY? Is Stress, Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia and Irritable Bowel affecting you?
MY LIFE
THE DRY FACTS ON DRIED FRUIT Cyndi O’Meara says dried fruit is full of additives and should only be eaten sparingly.
A
s thoughts start turning to our children heading back to school, the inevitable question always comes up – what to put in their lunchboxes? Dried fruit seems to be a popular snack food for young children, and some adults. It conjures up the image of a healthy alternative to sweets – but is it? The history of dried food goes back to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. Excess fresh foods were dried so they had something to eat when the winter months came and food was scarce. The food was usually reconstituted with water before it was eaten. With food so abundant these days, we don’t need to use dried fruit as a survival food source and while it is okay to eat as a snack occasionally, some people are eating it many times a day in foods such as cereals, cakes, raisin toast, muesli bars and dried food snacks. If water isn’t added
before you eat it, then your body has to add the water when the fruit reaches your stomach. This can dehydrate the body. There are often several things added to dried fruit and they’re not always on the food label. Sugar, dextrose, glucose syrup, fruit juice, food colouring, glycerin (422), sorbic acid (200), sulphur dioxide (220), parafin and refined vegetable oils. Some of the effects of these additives can be headaches, thirst, nausea, high blood sugar levels, skin irritations and digestive issues, to name just a few. So what’s the alternative? Try to buy organic, naturally dried fruit. Or dry your own. But remember, even naturally dried fruit shouldn’t be a constant food source. So put dried fruit in lunchboxes only occasionally, and in moderation. Find out more at changinghabits.com.au.
Are anti-depressants not working for you? Find out why! Are you irritated, never excited, or constantly negative? Do you have trouble sleeping, your mind won’t stop racing, or you wake too often through the night? Do you get anxiety at bed time hearing your heart beating while your head is on the pillow? One single underlying issue can cause these symptoms including anxiety, nervousness, depression, or lack of excitement and motivation for life. Stress feels overwhelming, and little upsets cause anger. Palpitations, overheating, tingling in the hands or feet, irritable bowel syndrome, foggy brain and poor concentration including ADHD in children, can be present. Often these symptoms have occurred for months, years or even decades. You may suffer a few or all of them. The cause is found in the gut and is widespread throughout the community. It’s a malicious infection picked up from travelling overseas, or having contact with someone who has travelled, detected only in specialised testing. This infection has been shown to release a neuronal toxin, affecting the nervous system physically and mentally. It has not often been associated with mental health conditions even though studies are available showing its impact on the brain. It can be passed on very easily, therefore more than one person in a home may be suffering from similar symptoms. Often, sufferers correlate the first symptoms coinciding with a trip overseas where they experienced a tummy bug causing diarrhoea or vomiting. Australia is so close to the Indonesian countries it can be transmitted from, traveling there often for holidays, so imagine the amount of people coming back who could be infected and how it can be passed on quite easily through schools, day care centres, or places of work. Fortunately it’s easy to treat, most symptoms are relieved as soon as the infection has been eradicated. I’ve seen patients who have suffered with depression for decades, after just one month of treatment have improved dramatically. Other patients showing improvement after just one week of treatment. Bacterial infections are just one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating depression, anxiety or ADHD. We have successfully treated hundreds of patients within months of beginning treatment. These are not conditions with unknown cause like many believe, and can be resolved quickly. If you would like to know more, call the centre and arrange a FREE ½ HOUR CONSULTATION, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at www.advancedwellness.com.au. A webinar is simply a seminar that you can see on the internet.

he legs are heavy, the wind brutal, but the backdrop a stunner. I’m labouring on my bike over the hills behind the iconic Bells Beach a few weeks out from only the second staging of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race. “Some say they invented wind down here,” said a beachgoer at Torquay where
I started my ride to sample a small portion of the race route. “You just don’t want to get the infamous 360-degree headwind.” On the roads behind Victoria’s Bells Beach – about 60 kilometres into the race which starts and ends in Geelong – is where the action will heat up in the one-day men’s and women’s professional races on January 30 to 31.

The region deserves something to celebrate after the New Year bushfires – albeit further down the Great Ocean Road in and around Wye River – burned through more than 2,500 hectares of land and destroyed 116 houses. The first race last year marked an emotional last professional race for the retiring Evans, Australia’s 2011 Tour de France winner who now divides his time between Barwon Heads, which is on the race route, and Switzerland. Evans will line up in the People’s Ride, a race where the public can pull on the lycra and challenge themselves over 111 kilometres or 65 kilometres on much of the same roads the day before the male pros and the same day as the female professionals. And then it’s on to the main event – and if last year’s race is any guide it will be tough. On a gruelling 183.6-kilometre course in 30C-plus heat, there were just 15 finishers out of the 130 starters. And that’s the beauty of the international cycling calendar, when the sport’s cosmopolitan elite can be tested in brutally dry Victorian conditions at the peak of summer on raw country roads and then head to the cool early spring weather in Europe to
race on cobblestones. Like the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders have proven to provide brilliant backdrops for television audiences, the Australian races that wind along spectacular coastlines and then through dry kangaroo-dotted bushland have enjoyed solid TV ratings overseas. In many ways, Victoria will be on show just as much as the cyclists. * The writer travelled as a guest of Tourism Victoria.

HAWAIIAN HOLIDAY WITH KIDS
Hawaii can be a great family holiday destination if you choose the right accommodation and activities. By Chris Melzer
H
awaii is a dream destination for many: white sandy beaches and clear blue waters, palms swaying in a gentle breeze and year-round temperatures of 28 degrees. The islands are above all seen as a place for the physically active vacationer – hiking, mountain climbing, scuba diving and surfing draw people to them from around the globe. But what about families? Is Hawaii a destination for visiting with children? It’s not exactly a cheap holiday. Rooms for below $US100 ($A139.17) a night are virtually non-existent, and travellers must realistically think more along the lines of $US200 a night. For families, the answer is to rent a vacation apartment.
But the satisfactions are evident: tasty cuisine, fascinating nature, different climate zones, a rich history and beaches like something straight from a travel brochure. Waikiki beach is always filled with people but never overcrowded. Narrow lanes among the sunbathers are there for surfers making their way to and from the ocean and surfing schools abound. This includes children, who must wear swim vests and be at least 10 years old. Away from the beach, the biggest single tourism attraction is Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941 a Japanese air attack not only destroyed the US Navy fleet there but also dragged the United States into World War II.
Visitors to the site first watch a documentary film, one that gives a fair picture of the attackers. But the film is not suited for small children. After, boats take visitors to the spot where the battleship USS Arizona lies on the seabed, just below the surface. One of Honolulu’s favourite attractions for families is the aquarium. Children can run through the glass-walled passageways and then might suddenly be stopped in their tracks by the sight of a huge squid facing them from the other side of the glass. Hawaii itself, the main landmass, is locally called Big Island. From the air, it looks as if it has been freshly-ploughed. However, the black furrows are not dark soil but lava formations.
The chain of islands was created by volcanic activity. The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is, logically, one of the most important tourist attractions. The park was established exactly 100 years ago, its geological sites being millions of years old. One rarely sees any eruptions of lava but there are gigantic craters, frozen lava formations and caves and fields where thermal steam is rising up, evidence Hawaii is still very much volcanically active. Children love running among the lava caverns, and, in the process, learning a bit about geology. Big Island offers nearly every type of climate zone on the planet. There is even snow atop Mauna Kea, the tallest peak at 4205 metres above

sea level. The eastern region of the island is Kona, a name that is music to the ears of coffee drinkers. Kona coffee is regarded as one of the best – and most expensive – in the world. There are about 800 coffee plantations in the region and they are a perfect destination for families travelling with children. “Coffee is part of our culture and we want to show children how it is produced and how people here once lived,” says Ku’ulani Auld of the Kona Historical Society. “Our small plantation continues to grow coffee. “We also keep animals here. Above all, each child can see how our greatgrandparents lived without electricity and running water.” Children can also bake bread and learn why the legs of the cupboards are standing inside tin cans filled with oil. The answer: a simple method to protect against cockroaches. Seeing only one of the group would be a shame. Planes, both large and small, regularly fly from island to island. Maui is for many the epitome of the dream island. In fact, it does offer the longest beaches in all of Hawaii as well as the most rainfall by far. Large
portions of Maui are covered by rainforest. Baldwin Beach is so beautiful as to make you think it is unreal, boasting wide, white sands, and it is never overcrowded. The surf is powerful, and even bigger children should never go beyond the marked-off zones where life guards are on duty. But even these are never overcrowded. Although every week dozens of cruise ships drop anchor, and every day tens of thousands of people arrive by plane, one still finds white sandy beaches and turquoise-coloured waters in the group where hardly any people are to be seen. This is one secret of why Hawaii is a dream destination – including for families.

MY OPINION
A SUPER DILEMMA
BOYS VS GIRLS
It’s a bit rich for our government to instil fear of losing the pension when they’ve failed to crack down on superannuation laws, writes Richard Bruinsma.
Sami Muirhead celebrates the differences between sons and daughters.
M
y friend is pregnant with her fourth child. The first three children are all boys. My buddy is desperate for a girl. She does not know the gender of the baby yet but she has taken to praying out loud for a girl as she walks though the sea of pale pink bows and ruffles in the baby girl clothing section at department stores. She says she cannot cope with one more pirate addict or Star Wars tragic in her house. My friend’s boys are happy and healthy. But they are true boys. They play in mud. They kick and punch each other for no good reason. I am blessed to have two boys and one girl. In our household, the two genders are chalk and cheese. My little girl wants to nurture her stuffed toys and rock them to sleep. She is obsessed with glitter and tutus and tells me she loves me a million times a day. My middle toddler is a boy and wants to shoot the same stuffed toys with arrows and then run over them with his toy trucks. He loves sharks and monster trucks and any object in the entire household is usually transformed into a sword or some form of weapon to belt the dogs or his younger brother. When I tell my boy I love him he pushes my face away and runs off giggling. They could not be more different. My friend sees some of us going to ballet lessons and having dress-up high tea parties and wants to join the pink parade. I can relate to her as I too was desperate to have a girl. I had it all
planned. I would probably have four girls in all and when we were adults we would frolic in Paris. Then I found out having babies is not always an easy task and you are actually blessed to just get a baby. Pink or blue. On top of all of that, getting a healthy baby is winning the jackpot. But feeling let down over the gender of your child is a real thing. It’s called Gender Disappointment and there are tens of thousands of parents around the world who admit to suffering from it. But those little boys certainly have their own way of casting an enchanting spell over their mums. My boys cannot really do any wrong in my eyes, even when they are being little terrors. It is their charm. There is possibly no more a protective love than that of a mother towards her son. You love a son differently to the way you love a daughter. I hope my friend gets her wish to have a baby girl because different worlds will open up when it comes to weekend sport, hobbies and friends coming into their lives. But I am not telling her that. I am simply saying that another boy would make her a truly special mum. Which it will. She will be the princess of the palace. A crazy loud palace filled with little princes.
For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
T
reasurer Scott Morrison made it clear recently that today’s workers, when they retire, should not expect to depend on the availability of a federal government pension. It’s not the first time a federal government has uttered such a warning-with-consequences to ordinary workers. But that view does not take into consideration the truth that a number of small businesses – some through moral failings and others due to financial challenges – are not contributing compulsory funds to their employees’ superannuation accounts. It is a legal requirement that they contribute an amount equal to 9.5 per cent of the employee’s wages, but it just doesn’t happen. My understanding is that it is so common, especially for our youngest, that it’s accepted as the norm, many workers are unaware it’s a legal breach and many don’t even think to complain. The Australian Tax Office is responsible for policing this requirement, for investigating complaints and for prosecuting offenders. But the ATO is also under-resourced and cannot pursue each breach of the compulsory super laws for what are relatively small amounts of money in the whole scheme of the nation’s financial system. The government needs to either provide better resources for ATO
investigations or it needs to make provisions for enlarging the nation’s pension stockpile for the future. Workers can make voluntary contributions, but that’s difficult considering average wage levels, housing prices and costs of living. The Australian Government is either unaware of this ‘super’ dilemma or it doesn’t care that a perceived crash is coming in the future, when our ageing population, let down by failures of the compulsory contribution system, is unable to collectively provide for itself. I am convinced many politicians cannot comprehend such issues and are actually unable to expend mental energy putting these pieces together in their minds. Those that have the capacity seem to throw it into the too-hard basket. Perhaps the answer is a simple complaints procedure in which the employer is deemed guilty by default if he or she cannot provide documentary evidence of contributions. The government cannot have it both ways: it cannot issue such warnings to the ordinary man and woman without putting in place mechanisms that ensure they will be able in retirement to fend for themselves financially. Policies that help create genuine employment and increase average wages would also help, but that’s a whole other story.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
EGGS IN MANY BASKETS Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
O
n the surface 2015 seemed like a trying time from an investment perspective. The fall in commodity prices saw local sharemarket favourites BHP and RIO drop around 33 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. These falls weighed heavily on the local market resulting in the benchmark ASX200 struggling to keep its head above water. However, as our economy transitions from the recent mining boom there are other sectors that have performed well. Two examples are Bellamy’s Australia (BAL) a producer of organic food and formula products for babies and toddlers. The second is Blackmores (BKL) a producer of health products for both
myweeklypreview.com.au
31.indd 1
humans and animals. At the time or writhing Bellamy’s had increased around 750 per cent for the year and Blackmores around 500 per cent. Although these increases are at the extreme end of the spectrum they are an example of gains that may be had and reinforce the benefit of having a diversified investment portfolio. There are other investments that have also performed well including international investments. With Australia making up only 2 per cent of the world’s stockmarkets it is important to ensure that you have an appropriate diversified exposure to international companies. Although it is simple enough to buy shares in international companies directly it is often a good idea to invest in either a managed fund or an exchange traded fund (ETF). These can provide a good level of sectoral and geographical diversification. Alternative investments are another asset class that may warrant inclusion in your portfolio.
Health product company Blackmores had a 500 per cent growth during 2015. Alternative investments are those that fall outside the normalcy asset allocation guidelines and include commodities, precious metals, hedge funds, infrastructure and private equity. Once again diversification within this asset class is important. With 2015 being done and dusted now is the perfect time to review your financial goals and objectives for not
only 2016 but also for the medium to long term as well. Depending on your age the time frame associated with these will differ however, the importance of review will remain the same. This review should be thorough and cover everything from paying off your debts in an efficient and timely manner, saving for the kid’s education and saving for retirement. Part of this review should include looking at your current asset allocation and deciding if more diversification is appropriate. This may include investing in cash, fixed interest, Australian and international shares, property and alternative investments. MY TIME
TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe kicks off 2016 with a trendy juice diet of the ale variety.
T
he New Year is well and truly under way and I’m feeling pretty positive about things. Sure, I bought a book called How to Scam On eBay from eBay back in November and it hasn’t arrived yet, but apart from that – oh and the fact that I made love to my wife last night like they do in the movies… I was fast, she was furious – but apart from those two little issues, things are on track. It really is a crazy old world we live in, where losing your phone is more intense than losing your virginity and everyone’s busier than a one-toothed bloke in a corn on the cob
eating contest. It’s all about getting things in perspective. We all need to chill. It’s a fact we are never too busy to complain about how busy we are, but this year I’m planning to work extra hard on relaxing my freckle. My wife reckons if I relax any more, I’ll slip into a coma, but I know it’s time to stress less, to take the time to look after myself. Already this year I’ve nailed a trendy juice diet and by juice I mean beer, I’ve climbed a mountain (of credit card bills) and I’m thinking about taking up a competitive sport. (How many wicked wings you can do compared to your buddies is a competitive sport, people). I’ve never ever won a trophy but I imagine that feeling of victory is like when your order number is called at the bistro. This year it’s less social media and more discovery. It’s time to slow down and smell the hot chips and gravy. I’ve got a list of things I want answers to. Like what happens after the first ten minutes of an adult film? Does the young actress get the job? Is the pool okay to swim in now? Most importantly, can you drink a Young Henry’s English

Summer Ale in winter? I plan to investigate all these and more in the coming months, while always employing the mantra never look at your beer as half empty; look at it as you’re half way to your next beer. On that note, let’s rip into a couple of frothy chops from our buddies at Young Henry’s south of the border. The YH Newtowner is a nod to the brewery’s roots in Sydney’s Newtown and it combines a blend of English and Aussie malts and a trio of local hops making it fruity, fresh and even a little bitter, just like the people of Newtown. When it comes to refreshing, the YH Newtowner absolutely nails it. I give the Young Henry’s Newtowner 3.5 out of five thumbs up.
YOUNG HENRY’S NEWTOWNER Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. You can hear Todd Widdicombe on Mix FM.
SEAFOOD AND A SIP OF VINO Don’t miss the chance to try Mooloolaba Surf Club’s January meal of the month. For a limited time, diners can buy the cold seafood plate, which includes a whole Moreton Bay bug, Mooloolaba prawns, oysters, lemon and dipping sauces. It’s served with two glasses of paladino sangiovese or pinot grigio and costs $50.
FISH TACOS & TOMATO SALSA For the fish tacos 400g boneless firm white fish fillets 50ml vegetable oil Juice of 1 lime 1 tspn smoked chilli powder 1 sliced jalapeno Finely chopped coriander root Mix vegetable oil, lime juice, chilli powder, jalapeno and coriander root. Use this mix to marinate the fish for at least half an hour. To give a nice smokey flavour cook the fish on the BBQ. For the Tomato Salsa 1 red onion diced 4 cloves garlic crushed 1 red chilli chopped 6 large tomatoes, roughly chopped Tspn chopped oregano ½ bunch chopped coriander Mix the red onion, garlic, chilli and tomatoes, season with salt and pepper and roast until completely soft, blend mixture and add the chopped herbs. Serve the cooked flaked fish with warm tortillas, shredded white cabbage, fresh avocado, finely sliced red onion, sour cream and the tomato salsa.

FEEL LIKE YOU’RE ON HOLIDAYS AT HOME
H
eavy machinery is on site and earthworks are underway on a new Halcyon over 50s lifestyle community in Bli Bli. The new community, Halcyon Lakeside, will be located within the master planned Parklakes 2 community. Set against a backdrop of natural bushland, Halcyon Lakeside features two lakes with 450 metres of lake frontage, undulating hills, access to six kilometres of walking tracks and a comprehensive five-star recreational and leisure precinct for the exclusive use of home owners. To find out more about this new gated community, please phone 1800 050 555 or visit the Halcyon Landing Display Home and Halcyon Lakeside Sales Office at Halcyon Landing 27 Waigani Street, Bli Bli.
GOOD CHEER SET TO CONTINUE AT NATURE’S EDGE
T
he momentum created over the past 12 months at Buderim’s master-planned gated community for the over 50s, Nature’s Edge, is expected to continue well into the new year as demand for homes reaches unprecedented levels. Sales manager Lyn Morrison says demand and sales have been so strong that every week new residents are moving in and calling Nature’s Edge home. “Our first residents moved in March 2015 and since then the community has continued to evolve and flourish with residents who all seem to share a similar desire of living life to the fullest. “The construction team has been working around the clock leading up to Christmas to meet the demand, which is triggered by the unique lifestyle we have on offer. With over two-thirds of our third release The Rise under contract, the pressure really has been on the construction team to get cracking on the new homes and we expect them all to be completed in the next few months. “These individually designed homes take advantage of their unique never to be repeated
tropical rainforest setting. The good news is that there are still a few select prime north facing sites which are still available for those buyers looking for a private secluded location.” Civil works are almost complete on the fourth release, The Summit stage, with 22 lots boasting large breezy sites with glorious rainforest views and striking three-metre granite rock retaining walls built by the master stonemason. Susan Gray recently moved into Nature’s Edge and says she couldn’t believe the quality and value of the community. “I was mesmerised by the natural rainforest setting, you certainly don’t get an appreciation of how lush it is until you actually walk the site – it’s stunning. The view from my living room and bedroom is filled with birds and greenery – it’s so private and quiet and yet there’s nothing better than listening to the sound of the birdlife as I awake each morning.” Morrison says Nature’s Edge was becoming a magnet to existing residents of manufactured home parks in South-East Queensland, with several recent buyers choosing to sell where they are living and
relocate to Nature’s Edge. “We currently have a $15,000 discount and when you combine that with our already low prices and stunning location, it’s clear that many savvy buyers are getting in early before prices inevitably rise.” The final plans for the $2 million Nature’s Edge state-of-the art Leisure Centre will also be released soon, with a number of new features added to the original plan in order to accommodate the active lifestyle of the residents. “Residents will be able to enjoy resort-like facilities including a heated pool, spa, gym, massage area as well as a bowling green, tennis court and a media room. There will also be a leisure club with a bar, dance floor as well as a dining and entertainment area, our goal is to ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy at the Leisure Centre.”
To arrange an inspection call Lyn Morrison at the Natures Edge sales office on 1800 218 898 or visit naturesedgebuderim.com.au.

MOTORING PREVIEW
PURR-FECTION Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the JAGUAR XE
A
t last, a Jaguar for the masses. The brand that launched a million schoolboy dreams is suddenly a reality for everyday families with the arrival of the new XE model – bringing the famous leaping cat emblem to a driveway near you.
The decade-long revival of this British icon – ironically now under Indian ownership – is all but complete with the arrival of Jaguar’s first genuine mass-market model. But Jag lovers need not worry. While the brand is set to become much more
commonplace, it’s not about to become common. The XE will claw its way into a cage fight with the likes of Mercedes-Benz’s C-Class, BMW’s 3 Series and the Audi A4 – the luxury mid-sized models that have in recent years become the province of
Australia’s upwardly-mobile middle class. Yet even in that company, the Jag adds a rare kind of mystique. How important is this car to Jaguar? Well, it’s likely to double their annual global sales off its own bat, and has been described as one of their most important models ever. The XE arrives at a time when Jaguar has totally rediscovered its mojo with a fine range of stylish, technically advanced and dynamically proficient models. As the new entry-point for that range, the XE is tasked with spreading the romance of this iconic brand to a whole new group of buyers. It will do so with a starting price of $60,400. Jaguar’s sales pitch focuses on the XE’s sporty, youthful appeal. Yet its styling is probably the most conservative of any car in the Jaguar lineup. It’s unmistakably a Jag, but at first glance isn’t quite as sexy or feline in its appearance as its big-brother XF – nor those gorgeous designs further up the family tree that have restored Jaguar’s place in the automotive pantheon. But while it might be just a little generic to look at, the XE certainly is not ordinary to drive.

MOTORING
Jaguar has aimed for – and struck the sweet spot between sporty engagement and the refinement and comfort expected of premium brands. It will aim to fill the space previously owned by BMW’s 3 Series as the most focused, dynamically capable sedan in this category – ground that the Beemer has relinquished in recent years in pursuit of its Benz rival. The XE will be offered in four trim levels – Prestige, Portfolio, R-Sport and S – and with a choice of four engine options. Like its German rivals, engines are predominantly four-cylinder – one turbo-diesel and two turbo petrol engines of varying outputs - with a supercharged V6 topping the performance ranks. In its most virile form the XE will match all but the highest-performing rivals in this segment, reaching the speed limit in less than five seconds. Yet even the more modestly-powered variants deliver on Jaguar’s sporty reputation. We tested two separate iterations of the XE across two separate weeks – firstly the diesel-powered option in Premium spec and later the turbocharged, four-cylinder R-Sport which adds some extra punch to the package.
Inside, Jaguar has done a good job balancing the luxurious feel that must, by necessity, accompany this brand with a contemporary and stylish cabin presentation. It all comes together nicely and feels airy and spacious, although lacking some of the high-end appeal of the Benz and Audi, which have set the new benchmark in this class. Like most modern Jags, it enjoys substantial use of lightweight steel and aluminium to keep overall weight in check, in turn delivering sharp, responsive handling. The R-Sport commands a $4000 premium over the base model and adds sports body kit, sports suspension and larger alloys; while the luxury Portfolio trim adds premium leather and woodgrain veneer for the $10,000 price premium. The flagship S model, complete with supercharged V6 producing 250 kilowatts, requires deeper pockets with its $104,200 price tag. That might push it a bit beyond the means of many – but after all, it is a Jag. And everybody can still dream, can’t they?
They’re distinctly different, yet both delivered on the promise that is the Jaguar mantra – Grace, Pace and Space. The Ingenium diesel is a cracker – notably crisp and quiet while providing the XE with enough urge to feel like the sporty sedan it’s promised to be. The engine pumps a sparky 132 kilowatts plus 430Nm of torque through the eight-speed transmission while achieving extraordinary fuel efficiency as low as 4.2L/100km. The R-Sport turbo delivers 177kW and 250Nm with a 0-100km/h time of a brisk 6.8 seconds, sipping 7.5L/100km. If that’s not quick enough, the supercharged V6 S boasts 250kW and a sub-5 second sprint to the speed limit.
JAGUAR XE HOW BIG? The new baby of the Jaguar family is a generously-proportioned addition to the luxury mid-sized category – feeling slightly larger than its German rivals. HOW FAST? Even the basic turbo-diesel model is a surprisingly sporty thing with impressive takeoff and mid-range acceleration. The turbocharged petrol models add further performance while those opting for the high-performance S model will generally be first away from the traffic lights. HOW THIRSTY? The diesel sets an impressive standard here – average consumption dips to 4.1L/100km – that’s 75 miles per gallon in the old British language. HOW MUCH? You can become a member of the Jag owner’s club for a tick over $60-grand plus onroad costs – although the most powerful model is almost twice as expensive.

SALES SUCCESS
GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE
Volkswagen Australia has finished the year with a strong result with the brand reaching new heights. More than 60,220 vehicles were sold achieving a new sales record. At the close of 2015, Volkswagen’s sales were up 9.9 per cent when compared to the same period in 2014. Two key models that contributed to the company’s success in 2015 were the Golf and Polo, selling 22,092 (+15.2 per cent ) and 9,694 (+46.7 per cent) vehicles respectively. Jetta, Amarok, Touareg and Scirocco also proved popular with Australian customers in 2015.
A
udi has unveiled its latest concept car and fans of the manufacturer have welcomed the announcement. Car enthusiasts have spent the past 12 days in Detroit at the annual North American International Motor Show which concludes this weekend. Thousands of journalists and car enthusiasts from all over the globe gathered to witness the launch of the new vehicles. The Audi h-tron quattro concept was unveiled last week and offers a preview of what future mobility could look like. It boasts good range, swift refuelling and sporty road performance, combining a highly efficient fuel cell with a powerful battery that can provide a temporary boost of 100 kW. The car can be fully refuelled with hydrogen in around four minutes and is then ready to drive for up to 600 kilometres. The Audi h-tron quattro concept presents the fifth generation of fuel cell technology from Audi and Volkswagen. Lighter materials reduce the weight and improve performance, responsiveness, service life and
efficiency. With an efficiency rating in excess of 60 percent, the fuel cell now surpasses any combustion engine. The technology study also provides a glimpse of things to come in the fields of piloted driving and piloted parking technology. Audi will go into production with this technology in 2017, with the next generation of the A8 luxury sedan. The Audi h-tron quattro concept is another milestone for the company and is closely related to the concept car Audi e-tron quattro.
Both are based on the secondgeneration modular longitudinal platform (MLB evo). Whether with purely battery-powered drive, plug-in hybrid, combustion engine or fuel cell – Audi has a command of all alternative drive technologies and offers tailor made solutions for its customers worldwide. In 2014, the Audi Group delivered to customers about 1.74 million vehicles of the Audi brand, 2,530 sports cars of the Lamborghini brand and around 45,000 Ducati motorcycles.

The calm before the storm is what I call January – things are ho hum at the moment but destined to get better as we move towards low pressure systems this time of year. I guess it’s a bit of a waiting game. I cannot wait for a decent cyclone swell, hopefully it is far enough to deliver all the goodies without any wind. I live in hope. Word is slowly getting out of a secret project at the Beach Beat shaping factory at Fishermen’s Road, Maroochydore. Some very special one-off boards are being released. So good you will not want to surf them.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Trevally are taking live bait and lures around the Maroochy motorway bridge pylons and at Petrie Creek mouth with top or bottom of the tide the only times they feed. You can get monster whiting on yabbies around Goat Island on the rising tide. You can find mud crabs up most creeks. More rain would help flush the creeks and rivers, bringing on most species. SURF: Flathead are working along the shallow gutters from Maroochy North Shore to Mudjimba using pillies or strip baits slowly retrieved. There are whiting along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide. OFFSHORE: There are mixed reef fish with the odd cobia from The Blinker to The Gneerings using small bottle squid. Snapper, pearlies, amberjack and rosy job fish can be caught with pillies, cuttlefish and plastics. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam near Imbil is closed at present due to blue green algae, so check with authorities before venturing out there. The local dams of Ewen Maddock, Baroon Pocket and Lake Macdonald are returning a variety of species using spinner baits and live shrimps, but you must find where they are schooling on your sounder. Somerset is best for golden perch, bass and jew on baits and deep divers.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) You’re feeling optimistic about the future, but don’t spoil success by criticising family and friends. Avoid talking about politics and religion – keep the conversation light! And take particular care when commuting, computing, texting and travelling on Monday.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Mercury (your ruling planet) finally moves forwards on Monday night, so all forms of communication should improve. Time to express yourself in forthright ways. The more honest and open you are with family members, the better the week will be.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Close relationships will be intense and complicated (especially on Monday and Saturday). The more you try to manipulate others, the more difficult things will be. Nurture loved ones, but don’t smother them – allow them room to express themselves.
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) From Tuesday onwards it’s time to beautify your home or work environment and have some fun, as Mercury and Venus enhance charm, conversation, enjoyment – and love! If you’re single, you could find yourself drawn to a colleague, customer or client.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Mercury is finally moving forwards so creativity and self-expression should all flourish. Nurturing friendships is favoured, as you get deep-andmeaningful with someone on Saturday. With Jupiter and the north node linking up, strive to be more adventurous.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) From Tuesday onwards is the time to tackle chores you’ve been putting off, as Mercury goes direct in your home zone. With Jupiter and the north node pairing up in your spirituality zone (on Friday), there is inner peace to be found via activities like meditation.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) With Mars in your sign, you’re frustrated by people’s lack of motivation – but don’t push buttons. Instead, connect with friends who focus on solutions. Jupiter and the north node fire up your networking zone on Friday, so opportunities will come via colleagues.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Saturn is moving slowly through your sign. So you are learning many things about yourself, and letting go of aspects of your personality that are no longer serving you well. Fabulous opportunities will manifest, as long as you have the confidence to follow your true destiny.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Mercury turns direct early in the week – and then joins up with Pluto (in your sign) on Saturday. Some Capricorns will suffer from a severe dose of OCD. Use this powerful energy to go in a different direction, as you break free and release yourself from the need to be perfect.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Many Aquarians will be thrust into the public spotlight, so make sure you’re prepared. Your secret weapon is confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anyone else? You’re keen to take action at work, but don’t jump in and be too impulsive.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Tuesday onwards is a good time to participate in group activities as you socialise in style. The current planetary patterns highlight your creative and spiritual side, but they also emphasise your tendency to blend fact and fantasy – so try to keep your feet on the ground.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Have you been insensitive? Resist the temptation to antagonise loved ones or say things that unintentionally hurt others. Words are powerful weapons, so use them wisely. When it comes to a friend or colleague, take the time to walk a mile in their shoes.

THE LAST WORD
CARAVAN PARK CONTROVERSY It’s unfair to have dibs on your caravan spot to the exclusion of everyone else, writes Richard O’Leary.
F
irst in, best dressed doesn’t usually worry me as a rule – it’s fair enough when you are talking about sausages at a barbie, drinks in the fridge, or even freebies at a garage sale. But I make an exception with reserving a caravan spot for life, as some people seem to have done at the Mooloolaba Caravan Park. There’s something that doesn’t sit quite right with me about a system where countless Sunshine Coasters have been locked out of that park during peak holiday periods for decades. I don’t believe that because your grandfather camped there 30 years ago, and your family has reserved that spot ever since, that you have the right to get the same patch of grass forever. Everybody should have the opportunity to enjoy the ideal location. As it stands, no one will be able to stay there from the middle of next year
when the Sunshine Coast Council intends to take back the lease and turn it into a recreation area for the whole community to use as part of the Mooloolaba foreshore rejuvenation. But those who are being ‘evicted’ are not going quietly. Those who have enjoyed the prime positions in this park in the prime times,
“Everybody should have the opportunity to enjoy the ideal location” at the exclusion of others, met last week to try and get the park heritage listed. They’ve started a petition and a fighting fund to try and protect the park, and one imagines, their spots. Now, let me make this clear: I
wouldn’t have a problem with the area being heritage listed – there are arguments for saving such an iconic site. In a rapidly changing world there should always be room to preserve links with our past, especially when they remain strong bonds to our present. But I would only support it if a lottery was introduced so everyone had the opportunity to soak up the sun, smell the salt and feel the wind at the sites during the Christmas holidays. I wonder if those trying to protect their prized holiday location would be open to the idea? To be honest, I don’t blame them for taking advantage of the setup for so many years, who wouldn’t? But all good things must come to an end. So maybe the time is right to just walk away with the fond memories they must surely have safely stored in their heads and family photo albums. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
