o you remember when the only thing you could do with your mobile was make and receive phone calls? Quaint, wasn’t it? As we all know, they do so much more now; allowing you to read the latest news, pay bills, start relationships, end arguments (your Dad’s dubious facts are easily defeated by a Google search) listen to podcasts and watch movies. But what are all these technological breakthroughs doing to us as a society? That’s what we have tried to get to the bottom of in this week’s cover story. Also in this issue, you get the chance to have a quick chat with Channel 7’s Rosanna Natoli, catch up with Ralph Devlin – a leader in the law and surf, test drive Audi’s entry into emissions free driving, and go skiing at Whistler. As always, there’s plenty of local news, socials, fashion, lifestyle tips, and property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
WORK HARD, LOVE HARD
Rosanna Natoli of Mooloolaba is a TV news presenter, teaches journalism at the University of the Sunshine Coast and loves nothing more than sharing a good meal with her friends and family. FIRST JOB?
meeting actual blood relatives in Italy (I don’t have any aunts, uncles or cousins in Australia so it was an awesome feeling to look at someone and share all that family history. It’s something you probably don’t appreciate if you’re surrounded by extended family all the time.
Working on the registers at Best and Less. I was so excited! That first job gave me a great grounding in customer service.
WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW?
A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
There are so many exciting developments in news in the digital arena – how we deliver news, sport, weather and even what’s on across the region is changing very quickly – and there are some projects I’ll be working on with USC’s students as well. It’s a truly thrilling time to be involved in the media industry. Plus, I do the social media for the Two Bros. It’s a whole new world and business needs to embrace it to survive and grow.
I lost my mum recently. My whole universe tilted that day. Everything has changed and I am still trying to make sense of it all. She was a totally selfless woman and I still reach for the phone each day to talk to her. She stayed with us a lot of the time and I miss her so much. I tell myself it is the circle of life, but there is still such an ache in my heart.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
My husband Joe, and three gorgeous children: Ruby, Mia and Roman. My sister Angela and brother Peter. Plus two new fur-babies Ollie and Elmo.
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Very simple – Rosie or Rosalina.
FIRST CAR? Datsun Stanza. It was bronze (okay, it was brown).
FAVOURITE SONG? So many… Woman in Love by Barbra Steisand and Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler take me back to my late teens, and I love the big ballads. Now the children influence the music we listen to so Taylor Swift and Katie Perry rate highly.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Fake it ‘til you make it. And I live by that. Every day I put on a smile no matter what and get on with what needs to be done. I believe being positive about all the situations life serves up is the best way to get through any challenges. Just starting on a task that seems insurmountable is a great way forward.
WHY DO YOU LIVE ON THE COAST? I wasn’t entirely happy when I moved here to be with Joe because I missed the city. But the Coast has grown up too and now I love the spectacular beauty of the environment matched by the genuine feeling of belonging to a community. And that’s really special.
FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST? The beach, the rainforest, watching the sunset… so many favourite spots. Our weather is pretty perfect year-round so I like to get out and walk and enjoy the clean air.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
More than 25 years. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I wish I had bought more beachfront property and a hinterland farm – but it’s not too late.
How do you choose? My wedding day, landing my first job in television (Sunshine Television News), discovering I had a baby on the way – three times – hanging with my sister,

These sound clichéd but they’re true: working in television for 20 years, watching students I’ve mentored at uni reach their goals on national TV, seeing my children play a board game together without fighting.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Friends and family gather together with food and fun.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? That my children fight with each other. They say such nasty things to each other and it takes my breath away. I never did that with my siblings.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? I yell and scream – woops, that’s the wrong answer!
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Work hard and love hard. Strive to be the best you can. You’ll get hurt sometimes, but you’ll bounce back.
TEA OR COFFEE? Definitely coffee. Cappuccino with two sugars – strong and sweet please.
NRL OR AFL? My son Roman wants to be an AFL player for the Lions, so I’m getting in early and barracking for them.

TECH HEADS
Technology is advancing at lightning speed and we’re all along for the ride – but is it a blessing or a curse? WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“We carry around with us more power in our pockets than what sent us to the moon”
I
t’s a warm Friday night as I sit in the bustling restaurant waiting to collect our usual ‘it’s the weekend, I’m not cooking’ dinner – a meal that was ordered online using a smartphone. As I sit and wait in the little restaurant I observe the other diners. There is a couple in their 20s who are excitedly snapping photos of their food, no doubt for Instagram; a man in his late 30s absorbed in something he is reading on his phone and an older gentleman who sits alone, eating his meal, peering down at his tablet. How life has changed. Technological advancements are now affecting our lives in terms of communication, education and environment. Take a second to reflect on the basic technology that has come and gone. In recent years, we have seen the death of video stores and the birth of Netflix, mobile phones have taken over landlines and snail mail is giving way to email. Baby Boomers witnessed the birth of the television and audio cassette; Gen X celebrated the launch of the VCR and Gen Y was gifted the internet. Like many, I can still clearly remember the day we had the internet hooked up at home. The year was 1997, I was 13 and the 12 My Weekly Preview | January 29, 2016
12.indd 1
excitement I felt at the first sound of that dial tone is memorable. There was enough time to go to the kitchen, grab a snack and return to the study before the computer had actually connected to this new and thrilling thing called the World Wide Web. Today, we can access the internet within seconds and from practically anywhere in the world. It is no longer
All you need to do is take a look around any cafe, shopping centre or airport to see the influence this connection, coupled with smart devices, has on our lives. When J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly announced the completion in 1946 of the ENIAC – a 28,000 kilogram computer that occupied a 15 by ninemetre room – they had no idea that one day millions of people would be carrying around 36 gigabytes of data on a tiny SIM card inserted into a mobile telephone. The ENIAC, which was the world’s first general purpose fully digital electronic computer, could complete 5000 instructions per second. To put that in perspective, the iPhone 6 can complete around 25 billion instructions per second. And of course, it can connect us to that huge global network, specifically social media.
“It’s time to think about the impact technology has on our lives’’ Stuart Smith a wondrous, mysterious world but something billions of people take for granted. Its history stems back to the 1960s but the internet as we now know it has only been in existence since the early 1990s. Now, there are more than 3.2 billion internet users globally – there are around 7.2 billion living on the planet. Comparatively, the United Nations International Telecommunication Union reported that 15 years ago there were only 400 million users worldwide.
SOCIAL MEDIA In the year 2016, Mark Zuckerberg is a household name yet it was a relatively short time ago that the online billionaire
took a punt and launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm room. His creation, which celebrates its 12th birthday on February 4, has not only spurred on the evolution of social media, but brought with it an entirely new way for human beings to communicate. A report released last year showed that the average person spends one hour and 40 minutes a day browsing social media. Last year was record-breaking for social media, with the user mark reaching more than two billion people worldwide. Facebook has 1.55 billion monthly active users and has given us a useful communication tool. With it we can share in each other’s milestones, celebrate achievements, watch each other’s children grow, experience adventures. It has given people a platform to express their opinions, share their stories and spread community awareness. It has also given a voice to people who previously didn’t have one, according to Professor of Disruptive Technologies, Stuart Smith, from the University of the Sunshine Coast. People living with physical or intellectual disabilities have been given new opportunities, he says. “Technology now involves huge sectors of the community who are isolated… who are now able to communicate. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY
“One young guy I know who is physically incapacitated in a wheelchair, he plays online video games… to the extent he can now trade the goods and services he gets access to in the games for real money. “He is generating a real world income from the fact that he is an online video player. “Then there are lonely adults living in regional Australia, thousands of kilometres away, who have this beautiful device in a tablet to catch up with families. “We’ve got older adults playing video games to improve their state of health and wellbeing. “People who are recovering from stroke, engaging in stroke exercises… through social media technology and engaging in other activities like video games are building social networks.” Smith says technology has changed the world in a large number of ways, but especially in terms of communication. “I think it’s changed the way we can get access to the way we get information across any domain. “Technology fundamentally changes the way business operates, the way health care systems operate, governments, even down to individuals. “We carry around with us more power in our pockets than what sent us to the moon.’’
LOOKING FORWARD The big question is: where to from here? Recently, Robert Colwell, director of the Microsystems Technology Office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, told a cohort of experts at the Hot Chips Conference in America that the end of technological advancements could come as early as 2025. It might not be the brain that limits our technology growth, but rather the dollars. He says that Moore’s Law – a computer term penned in the 1970s that references how processor speeds for
computers double every two years – could become non-existent as companies struggle to keep up with the billion-dollar computing industry. Smith doesn’t agree. “There is still so much we yet have to understand, particularly around the intersection around biology and silicone industries,’’ he says. “There might be tools at our disposal
at school. “To find out how kids are going at school you see a teacher, have an interview, get a report card. It’s so inefficient. “There is no reason why it can’t be online. Those results should be updating automatically… with rankings so you can see how your children are doing, where they need improvement.”
The first computer (ENIAC)was 150 feet wide with 20 banks of flashing lights, c.1946 for new, young, creative makers to come up with new solutions. “I think we will see a move away from mass production towards bespoke tailored production and on-time, on-demand production. “The more we learn about biology from a systems perspective and more how the human brain and body works, the more we adapt our integration and technology into ourselves.” Sunshine Coast mathematical genius and IT consultant Mel Myers agrees that technology has a long way to go. He has been building websites and working in the industry since the age of 14 and says the online world has profoundly changed our lives. With efficiency it will continue to do so, Myers adds. “It will change more and more as time goes on… even little things like kids
HOW FAR IS TOO FAR? One person who fears technological advancement could go too far is Stephen Hawking – a man who needs no introduction. For the good part of 50 years the theoretical physicist and cosmologist has shaped the way the world views relativity, quantum mechanics and cosmology. Earlier this month, the world once again stopped and listened as the 74-year-old professor predicted that our scientific progress would certainly result in disaster for the human race. Speaking about black hole research as part of the annual BBC Reith Lectures in London, Hawking predicted that new technology and science would lead to increased threats to survival from nuclear war, catastrophic global warming and genetically engineered viruses. The research director at Cambridge
University’s Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, said: “Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or 10,000 years,’’ AAP reported. “By that time, we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race. “However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.” Not so long ago the mere suggestion of colonising alien planets conjured thoughts of sci-fi films – not to mention, scorn and laughter. But with technology pushing the boundaries, future relocation doesn’t seem impossible. Nor do other scientific claims. Futurist and scientist Ray Kurzweil reportedly believes that within the next 40 years nanotechnology will bring humans close to immortality. He says microscopic machines will be placed in our bodies to repair damaged cells and organs. And with America’s highest technology honour, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, under his belt, Kurzweil has the credibility to be making such claims. Professor Smith says with rapid change comes the need to consider the impacts. “Pre-internet everything, 30, 40, 50 years ago, life was much simpler. “It’s time to think about the impact technology has on our lives. There is always a new app, a new phone, new solutions… what that means is we probably have decreased our ability to think through our issues in a long, complex way. “The fundamentally human thing is we are always looking for ways to use technology that is accessible to us to communicate.’’

IF YOU ARE A SMART SHOPPER YOU CAN SAVE A LOT OF MONEY ON YOUR BEDS AND MATTRESSES If you have been looking to buy beds and mattresses, here’s some important information that may help you. Everybody wants to save money. Let me give a few examples on how business has transformed in order to keep their prices low. If you look at airline businesses, the low cost airlines are doing really well because the smart traveller knows they can get from A to B without all the bells and whistles. They choose not to pay the higher price just because it is a brand name.
SAVE UP TO 30% OFF POCKET COIL ENSEMBLES
NOW $899
Let’s look at the supermarket business; Aldi is rapidly increasing market share over Coles and Woolies, selling their own brands. Customers are happy to purchase the Aldi Brand because they know Aldi products are as good as any other because they are put through rigorous testing as well. Even Coles and Woolies are selling a lot of their own branded products rather than the major brands. Most of the time they are similar products without the brand. Let’s look at the final example of the milk you buy in your local supermarket. The supermarket brand is cheaper. I don’t think that milk is from a cheaper source. The same thing happens in the mattress industry. If you shop smartly, you could save yourself a lot of money. There is a local business that manufactures mattresses right here in Brisbane. You can go to their factory or one of their outlets and purchase your beds and mattresses. The fact you are buying directly from the factory, you could save up to 47% off retail prices. They sell their own brand but it is as good as the brand name. Thousands of people have already made their purchase. You can do it too. Here’s a sample of savings you will be expected to make...

TOP MARKS FOR COTTON TREE PARK
With stunning sea views, sunshine and beach access, it’s no surprise that Cotton Tree Holiday Park has rated as one of the top facilities in Queensland. The park was rated number four in the state and second best in the south-east corner on the Holidays With Kids website. Tourism portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray said Cotton Tree was one of the Sunshine Coast’s real gems. “It’s a ripper of a place for families so it’s no surprise that it’s been rated as one of the best in the state.’’

ONE MILLION More than $1 million has been injected into the community thanks to the Maroochy RSL. The organisation supported more than 100 clubs and community organisations with donations, sponsorship and in-kind support. Among the recipients was SunnyKids who received $30,000 of funding to improve the safety of Coast children. Maroochy Chief executive Clare Paton said giving back was one of the most rewarding ways to connect with the local community.

re you a school student in grades 10 to 12? If so, put your powers of innovation on show in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. Sunshine Coast Council and Telstra have partnered to create an inaugural competition for secondary school students to submit their new technology ideas – and there’s $20,000 worth of prizes up for grabs for both schools and individual participants. Mayor Mark Jamieson says all schools across the Sunshine Coast are eligible to apply. Online entries open in the first week of term one and winners will be announced in mid-May. “The Sunshine Coast Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards has been brought about to promote, foster and grow innovation and entrepreneurship on the Sunshine Coast by showcasing and celebrating unique and innovative technological ideas,” Mayor Jamieson says. “Finalists in the awards will be provided with a number of mentoring sessions from industry experts at the Spark Bureau in the weeks leading up to the final judging. As we saw from the recent Hack Fest competition, there are
some incredible innovators in our region and a number of our sharpest digital creators will help students in areas like marketing and customer research for their inventions. “Council is very proud to partner with Telstra to deliver the awards for the first time on the Sunshine Coast and I really look forward to seeing the fantastic innovations our students come up with.” For more information about the Sunshine Coast Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards and to enter, visit the council’s website at sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/techawards.

PROFILE
REWARD FOR A LIFETIME OF SERVICE Ralph Devlin is to be recognised for his services to surf life saving and the law with an AM medal. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
R
alph Devlin QC has devoted his life to his two passions: the law and surf life saving and he’s now being honoured for his service to both with a Member of the Order of Australia medal (AM). The Brisbane barrister is the President of Surf Life Saving Queensland, Deputy President of Surf Life Saving Australia and a life member of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club, where he’s been involved as a surf life saver and active member since 1971. The announcement comes on the heels of his participation in the 100-year anniversary celebrations of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club on January 1. “I’m very proud to have received the honour on the centenary of life saving on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. While his family home is in Brisbane, Devlin spends most weekends at his Maroochydore home. “I love it to death and always have a swim; I never take it for granted – that feeling of plunging into the sea.” Devlin’s love affair with the ocean was inspired by his father, who became involved in surf life saving on the Gold Coast in the 1930s. “I have very vivid memories of my father when we were on holidays on the Gold Coast actually performing rescues. Myself and my older brothers had to wait while he pulled someone in. He was a life saver who enjoyed the atmosphere of it, more so than getting deeply involved in the actual organisation like I’ve become. “I thought the sun shone out of my father when it came to all things to do with the sea. I learnt to body surf
on his back at about the age of seven. That was a wonderful thing that he and I shared.” Devlin left school in 1971 and was invited to join Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club by some friends. It was an awkward question to put to his father, who’d put his heart and soul into surf life saving on the Gold Coast. “I’m sure he was heartbroken, but he gave me permission to do that and it was probably my first lesson in how a parent has to be unselfish in matters of that kind. “He ended up coming up to Maroochydore with me a
lot as he got older; his ashes are spread off Maroochydore Beach. In the end he was chuffed I’d become so involved.” Devlin became club secretary at the young age of 19, intrigued by how the machinery of the club worked. He graduated from law school in 1977 and became president of the club in 1985, but after marrying his wife Frances in 1987, he postponed his club activities in order to raise five children and pursue his career. It wasn’t until his youngest son joined nippers in 2006 that he became involved again. “I said to Fran, I’d like to go back and make a contribution to the state organisation. I’d always intended to invest my time in the wider surf life saving organisation. It was put on hold for the best part of 20 years.” With all of his community work, it’s easy to forget Devlin is an esteemed Queen’s Council. “I’ve been involved in legal education in a number of universities and professional bodies and I’ve really enjoyed the legal education side of what I do, and 99 per cent of it I’ve done for nothing. Talking to Devlin, you get the feeling his heart is in the right place in everything he does and after all he has achieved, he’s not one to big-note himself. “I think a lot of people have that philanthropic side and a lot of it is done quietly and privately by many people in our community – Australia has a wonderful record in volunteerism, of which surf life saving is just a part. It’s only on occasions like this that I would only ever speak publicly about it. A lot of people don’t speak publicly, but just get on and do things for their fellow man.”

MY OPINION
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
LUNCH BOX ENGINEERING
Communications specialist Rebecca Grisman says the whole Sunshine Coast needs to band together to create a prosperous future.
Sami Muirhead is tentatively taking on the task of assembling her first school lunch boxes.
I
t’s back to school. I am not going on another rant about my self-inflicted misery because I am ‘losing’ my sweet five-year-old girl who started prep yesterday. I still have my two younger boys at home of course, but playing with light sabres and killing dragons doesn’t really make me swoon with cluckiness. But while I am planning on drinking lots of wine and binge eating chocolate this week to deal with my depression, I have a pressing new enemy to contend with on a daily basis: the dreaded school lunch. My kids are used to a plain old Vegemite sandwich and a banana for midday meals. Thank the universe and all the gods for bananas because I think the humble banana has saved my children from starving to death for many years. I am a terrible cook and school lunches do not inspire me to reach great heights, but from what I can gather school lunches are a serious sport. There are the usual rules of pretty much no anything, including nuts, chocolate, red food colouring, plastic bags or Glad Wrap. Everyone seems to have nude food and Bento lunch boxes. It is enough to drive me around the Bento. So I plan to be stickybeaking big time this week at the other kids and what healthy morsels they have in their lunch boxes, because after all you can tell a lot about a parent by how they do a school lunch box. Most people could tell by one look in the messy lunch box of my kids that I am an unmade bed
with fairly low standards and limited creativity. So I Googled ‘healthy lunches’ and the suggestions floored me. One site suggested packing guacamole in the lunch box. What? Everyone knows you serve guacamole with beer and have yourself a little Mexican party at home. Another site suggested hummus and crackers. Um, bring on happy hour and a nice glass of wine. K-Mart’s website had some healthy lunch ideas. One stated the following: “To prepare a fruit and vegie snail is easy. Create the snail with julienne carrots (for the antennae), half a celery stick for the snail base and hummus to stick the apple shell to the celery base”. I read this about ten times to try to understand. I do not think hummus is going to stick apples to celery. A second lunch menu suggestion said this: “For creative critters simply turn carrots, strawberries, blueberries, banana chips and pretzels into butterflies, monsters or funny faces! Just use a snap lock sandwich bag filled with tasty snacks, clip a peg along the centre, add a pipe cleaner and glue on a couple of goggly eyes.” I am going to give it a go, so think of me tomorrow morning as I battle in the kitchen like a crazy woman resembling a bad version of Martha Stewart.
For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.
I
think what the world, and the Sunshine Coast, needs now is higher expectations. It’s a year for local elections, spotlighting the Sunshine Coast on a global stage, celebrating our university’s 20-year anniversary and welcoming more people to our region. I’m certainly expecting big things of our political and community leaders, and of our wider community, if we seriously want to become Australia’s leading region for sustainability and ensure stronger tourism and long-term business growth. It’ll take vision and effort to achieve these goals. It also means that everyone has to contribute to that effort. Expecting that we all must aim higher and try harder is key to succeeding. Maintaining our status quo won’t do it. Maintaining our lifestyle while we add people, infrastructure, environmental pressure and spur economic growth requires progressive and proactive effort, not heavy braking. Running our region down, whether around the barbecue or via social media, is not useful either. I don’t want to hear more opinions about the pitfalls of starting a business and hiring people locally; that we should have built bigger highways; volunteers are too difficult; our beaches are too crowded; public transport and taxis are too few; or customer service in your local café is too slow. I want to hear what you think you can do about it. I say, if you want standards raised
then demonstrate the kind of friendly interaction you’d like, fill in the feedback forms, go the extra step yourself, give something back and be the change you want to see. Tell your government representatives what you want without criticising them for doing a job you don’t want to do. I’ve lived and worked here for 22 years this month, having originally come for two years as one of five original staff of the Sunshine Coast University College. I’ve seen up close our local community rejecting then embracing changes including our university, housing at Sippy Downs, Mooloolaba’s revitalisation, Sunshine Plaza, Kawana Island’s walkable waterfront, alternative routes to Nicklin Way, Duporth Avenue’s makeover, the Big Top’s plans, new hotels and hospitals, the close of the mill and Nambour’s revamp, Wises Farm’s redevelopment, Kings Beach, Ocean Street, the relocation of a golf course, and more. We are not paradise lost, nor any resemblance to the Gold Coast; we never were. We must focus on what we are, have, and aim to be. In 2016 I expect to be busy with work and community volunteering, my son’s grade one year and exploring our region’s natural beauty. I expect to employ more staff and that together will make a difference. I expect to speak up and support our region. It’s the least I can do. campaigngroup.com.au

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
GRAPPLING WITH A BEAR MARKET Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he prospect of a slowing China that cast such a long shadow across the market last year has darkened ominously at the outset of 2016. With markets in a tailspin around the world, Ord Minnett analysts have taken a deep breath and done their level best to corral thoughts on the outlook for the Australian market. There are risks lurking in dark corners – China, the property market, APRA, the political merry-go-round – but we see the balance as still tilted in favour of reward. This view stems, in part, from the resilience of the consumer and robust economic forecasts. In addition, Ord Minnett believes that further Australian-dollar weakness
will give additional support to companies earning in US dollars. The constructive case for banks remains stable net interest margins, cost reductions and near-term capital certainty. Equity market views – The December 2016 target for the S&P/ASX 200 Index of 5,500 suggests some 10 per cent upside for the Australian market over the coming year. Our preferred sectors remain financials, REITS and health care, while we are still underweight on resources and consumer staples. Economic perspectives – China and the Fed look set to take centre stage again in 2016. Deepening concern about economic deceleration in the former has upended markets this year and will likely remain a headwind until a semblance of stability emerges. In Australia, Ord Minnett suspects there will be echoes of last year’s underwhelming economic performance in 2016. Despite this, we are still
pointing to an improved GDP growth outcome at 2.7 per cent. It is also expected the RBA will remain on hold. Commodity angle – Despite an extremely challenging year in 2015 – the Bloomberg Commodity Index fell 25 per cent – there doesn’t appear to be immediate relief on the horizon. The commodities team remains bearish across most base metals, and broadly across the commodities complex. Currencies – Ord Minnett sees the Australian dollar biased lower over the
next three-to-six months on the back of US Federal Reserve tightening and the outlook for commodity prices and Chinese growth. We forecast the currency to fall to US$0.67 in the first quarter of CY16, versus the consensus view US$0.70. The relatively more bearish view on the Australian currency is an important factor in our overweight call on USdollar earners, particularly in sectors such as health care. Garibaldi Lake reflections, Whistler
WHISTLE A HAPPY TUNE Canada is enjoying its best ski season in years. Head to Whistler, where there’s heaps to do for ski-freaks and non-skiers alike. By Alison Godfrey
F
resh powder snow is dumping down on Whistler in record levels, creating the best conditions seen in years. But if your spouse doesn’t ski, it can be difficult to convince them of the magic of apres-ski. Luckily, there are plenty of things for the powder challenged to tackle off-piste. Here are six ways to
negotiate each excuse they may come up with and get them onto that plane. 1. I DON’T KNOW HOW TO SKI It’s never too late to learn. Whistler Blackcomb offers not just a ski school, but the chance to do one-on-one lessons with an Olympian. If they can’t get you up the mountain, no one can. Plus, you get to hang out with an Olympian.
2. I DON’T WANT TO LEARN Luckily, there’s plenty more to do on and off-piste. You don’t have to ski to be able to go up and down on gondolas and soak up the amazing views. Try taking the Wizard Express up Blackcomb and then the Peak 2 Peak – the world’s largest and longest gondola ride.
The Peak 2 Peak links Whistler Mountain’s Roundhouse Lodge with Blackcomb Mountain’s Rendezvous restaurant. It is the first lift to join the two side-by-side mountains. Get a buzz from heights? Try the silver cars offering a glass bottom. You’ll never tire of this view.

Whistler Ski Resort – more than two million people visit Whistler annually for skiing in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer 3. I WOULD RATHER SPEND TIME TOGETHER Chairlifts open at 8.30am on Whistler Blackcomb and the last lift is at 3pm. That leaves plenty of time to spend together. Besides, all day – you’d get sick of each other. If you spend just a little time apart you’ll have more to talk about over dinner. 4. I DON’T LIKE THE COLD Thermal underpants are a fantastic invention. You won’t even feel the chill outside. Even better – you can get
seriously warm at the Scandinave Spa. Set within a quiet spruce forest one-kilometre outside Whistler village, the Nordic inspired spa offers a cosy retreat from the cold Canadian winter. Warm your body in the steam room, warm baths or wood burning sauna before cooling off under refreshing waterfalls and plunge pools. The cycle of hot and cold supposedly releases endorphins, stimulating the immune system and cleansing the skin. Imagine how good you will feel.
5. THERE’S NOTHING FOR ME TO DO Even if you don’t ski, there’s still plenty to do off-piste. Try dog sledding, zip lining or snowmobile. By far the most amazing, once in a lifetime adventure you can have at Whistler is actually off-piste. Headline mountain holidays offers helicopter rides up to the ice caves. Imagine walking under the glacier watching the light bounce and sparkle in the light. You can’t do that every day on a resort holiday. 6. I DON’T EAT SCHNITZEL Araxi restaurant in Whistler is one of the most famous paddock to plate restaurants in the world. No schnitzel here. No, this restaurant’s specialty is fresh local oysters and an entry plate contains five different kinds (Sawmill Bay, Beach Angel, Joyce Point, Black Pearl and Zen) farmed at Pemberton 25 minutes away. Each meal on the menu will leave you with lost for words. Then there’s the incredible British Columbia wines. Due to local liquor laws, Canadians struggle to export their wine. But they are top quality. In fact they are so good that we’re
sure you will visit a local BC wine store before you go home. The See You Later merlot is one not to be missed. And if you don’t like wines, head over to the Bearfoot Bistro – they have the coldest vodka tasting room in the world. If that doesn’t work, there’s always summer time. * The writer travelled as a guest of Qantas and Tourism Whistler.
IF YOU GO GETTING THERE Qantas flies direct to Vancouver Canada for the winter season. Return economy fares start from $2275 economy premium from $4852 and business $9252. From Vancouver, Pacific Coach lines travels direct from the airport to Whistler. The trip takes two hours.
STAYING THERE The Fairmont Chateau Whistler resort is located at the base of Blackcomb Mountain and offers a ski valet, free daily yoga and a shuttle bus around the village.
PLAYING THERE Araxi and the Barefoot Bistro are located in Whistler village. Both offer degustation menus and an excellent selection of Canadian wine.

MY TIME
WHAT’S ON
SIMPLY DELICIOUS Set at the mouth of the Maroochy River and boasting beautiful views, Ocean Ended is one of the newest restaurants on Duporth Avenue. My Weekly Preview chatted with head chef Steve Hillen to find out what he enjoys about working on the Sunshine Coast. What’s your favourite go-to meal at home? I love cooking for my family and friends. It’s a completely different experience to the cooking I do for work. Our Sunday night family favourite is a classic roast chook. We use a good free-range chicken and roast it with lots of salt so the skin gets lovely and crispy. We usually do three or four different vegetables depending on the season, but it always includes crunchy roast potatoes. What’s your favourite local produce? I can’t go past the seafood on the Coast. There’s an abundance of under-utilised local seafood such as bream, whiting, and Spanish mackerel that don’t feature on a lot of menus. It’s worth going to your fishmonger and asking about these different varieties. What’s the best advice someone ever gave you? Some of the best chefs I’ve worked with over the years reinforced the benefit of simplicity. Work on three key elements to a dish. Don’t complicate it. What do you enjoy most about working on the Sunshine Coast? The view from my kitchen is a good start. After growing up in the UK, the weather here makes it worth getting up in the morning.
What task do you love being able to hand over to your apprentice? I tend to share the jobs around because I like to involve all my team in all the tasks in the kitchen. That said, I hate peeling beetroot. Talk us through the process of creating a new dish? I usually start with one key element then I work through flavour matches and textural contrasts until I’m happy with it. Or I just go with something that I love to eat. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? I love that the diners on the Sunshine Coast have really high standards. We’ve got a great range of fantastic restaurants to choose from, so we know we have to offer quality food, and the best local produce. What would be your last meal on earth? A simple piece of locally caught fish, some fresh vegies straight from our garden, a glass of great wine and the best company possible. Who is, or was, your inspiration? Sam Clark from Moro in London has had a massive influence over my cooking. The beautiful simplicity of his food, with its focus on bold flavours is something I’ve carried with me across the world.

The right illuminator applied correctly can take years off your face. Illuminators catch the light and give your skin a summer glow in all the right places, as well as lifting dull skin and drawing attention away from blemishes. You can apply it over the top of your foundation, blush or bronzer, or use it on bare skin. Liquid illuminators are best for dry skin and powders for oily skin. To apply, dab along the top of your cheekbone and blend out to just above your eyebrow with your fingers. Apply a little down the centre of your nose and down the middle of your forehead and chin.
1. BARGAIN: NYX Born to Glow Liquid Illuminator. MOURNING LOSS Eating well may not be on your list of priorities when you’re grieving, but the right nutrition is important at this time, writes Jodi Chapman.
G
rief and loss bring with them phases of emotions, initially numbness, then anxiety, anger or guilt, as you take in the full situation, followed by sadness, loneliness or depression, when finally you accept what has happened. It will be the most difficult time of your life to mourn the loss of someone or something, whether that be the passing of someone you love, the loss of a marriage, or relationship with a partner, child, family, or friend. Understanding this is a normal process and that you will eventually pass through these phases may help you see there will come a better time and give you hope for the future, though getting through each day can seem the hardest challenge, so use what you can to make it easier. If your body is not nutritionally
sound, it may prolong the process. Being aware that the nutrients in your diet are necessary to make the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine, to help you cope. Eating well, regardless of poor appetite is very important. Calming herbs will ease anxiety, where vitamins and nutrients will boost your mood and energy, giving you the strength to move forward. Maintaining a routine with exercise to boost your mood, keeping busy with friends or family who understand and allow you to be with them when you’re not at your best can mean the world of difference Make plans for the future, it is normal for life to change, so be kind to yourself – there will be a better time. AUDI’S E-TRON ECO CAR A WINNER German maker Audi’s first foray into emissions-free motoring delivers the best of both worlds, writes PETER ATKINSON, AAP
I
ts name sounds like some kind of evil alien robot from a sci-fi movie. But the Audi A3 e-tron isn’t here to destroy our planet, rather to help save it. The German maker’s first foray into the world of electric vehicles landed in Australia in mid-2015, offering environmentally-aware drivers yet
another guilt-free transport option. Based upon Audi’s acclaimed A3 Sportback – the compact-sized hatch that was voted the world’s best car in 2014 – the A3 e-tron incorporates an advanced drivetrain blending petrol, hybrid and pure electric power to deliver startling fuel-efficiency with a range of almost 1000 kilometres.
As a means of dipping a corporate toe into the realm of emissions-free motoring, Audi has chosen a fairly safe compromise. The A3 e-tron is certainly not as adventurous – or as polarising – as German rival BMW’s all-electric i3 – which has won huge attention and almost unanimous praise from the critics. But it does represent a step or two
beyond the now-conventional petrolelectric hybrid recipe championed for more than a decade by Japanese giant Toyota, and its prestige offshoot Lexus. While Lexus was busily growing its hybrid footprint, the big German carmakers focused on making their diesel and petrol engines cleaner, more efficient and more powerful – thumbing their collective noses at the idea of blending internal combustion engines with battery power. Now, having accepted that the future is electric, the Germans have set about beating Toyota at its own game. And the e-tron suggests they’re on the path to doing that. Expect to hear a lot more of the ‘e-tron’ moniker – the designation also features on Audi’s hybrid-powered World Sports Car entrants – and more recently was assigned to an all-electric E-Tron Quattro concept car unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show. For the moment, though, the A3 is the first e-tron variant available to the public. Audi is clearly pitching the car at urban professionals – highlighting its ability to complete the daily commute purely on electric power, with a range of 50 kilometres before the need to recharge. Equally though, it’s highlighting the continued over>

<from previous page car’s conventional range – which stretches to 920 kilometres with a full battery and full tank of petrol. Although they will compete almost head to head in the marketplace, there’s a philosophical gulf between this e-tron and the marvellous BMW i3. The Beemer is unmistakably, unashamedly aimed at the electric vehicle buyer – offering substantially longer range in fully-electric mode (about 150 kilometres) than the Audi. BMW even gives buyers the option of forgoing the range-extending petrol ‘generator’ engine, which doubles the car’s electric range. The e-tron follows a different mindset – offering short-trip electric capability, backed up by the conventionality – and practicality – of a regular hybrid. During the week you could drive it to work and back – recharging the batteries each evening by plugging it into a power point at home – and still have a normal car to drive to the beach (or further afield) on weekends. The A3 uses Audi’s impressive 1.4-litre TFSI turbocharged four-cylinder combustion engine – delivering 110kW and 250Nm – coupled to a 75kW, 330Nm electric motor. Performance is zippy – 0-100km/h in
Overseas model shown about 7.6 seconds is reasonable but no match for the dazzling acceleration of the electric BMW. Yet the two models will cost roughly the same – and offer similar amounts of space and equipment. Of the two, we preferred the BMW – as much for its uniqueness and cleanslate design as for its engineering innovation. But it’s fair to expect that many buyers would lean the way of the Audi, which is much more conventional in its appearance and also in its day-to-day operation. The best of both worlds. Audi has attempted to further sweeten the deal by offering to install a singlephase, high-output power supply to the homes of anyone buying an A3 e-tron – allowing betteries to be fully charged in
just 2.5 hours. A conventional power point will still do the trick, though. Like the i3, the e-tron is an impressive thing to drive. As well as pure EV (electric only) mode, there are two hybrid settings. One is a conventional hybrid mode that harvests engine and braking energy to replenish the car’s batteries supplying the electric motor to supplement power. But in Hybrid Hold mode the A3 merely maintains its current level of battery charge – meaning that the combustion engine is in use much less frequently and, as a result, consumption is greatly reduced. It works. Official consumption for the A3 e-tron is a minuscule 1.6L/100km, a remarkably frugal thirst. To justify its $62,490 price tag, Audi has loaded the e-tron with plenty of standard kit – including the variable Drive Select system and MMI cabin management system with satellite navigation. It might not be able to save the Earth single-handedly. But in a world where our use of fossil fuels is said to be slowly choking us, it’s a breath of fresh air.
AUDI A3 E-TRON HOW BIG? It’s a compact-sized five-door hatchback – but can comfortably accommodate four adults or more likely two adults and three small children in the back. Cargo space is reasonable too. HOW FAST? Performance is smooth if not dazzling – the electric motor helps it get off the line smartly and the turbo-charged four-cylinder engine adds plenty of punch in the mid-range. HOW THIRSTY? Its thirst is almost non-existent with an official fuel usage of 1.6L/100km. If you want, you can drive it in electric mode so it uses no petrol at all – but only for 50km at a time. HOW MUCH? Not cheap at $62,450 – which is substantially more than you’d pay for any comparable A3 model. But this one will save you plenty every time you drive past the fuel station.

TOP TIPS FOR RENTALS Finding it tough to get a rental property? Here are some helpful hints...
Maroochydore. A Caloundra two-bedroom unit comes in at $330 a week compared with $350 in Maroochydore and $340 in Mooloolaba.
A
t some stage in life most people have to rent a property. With recent figures showing that the Coast’s rental market has tightened, navigating the market can be a minefield. The REIQ Market Monitor Report for the September quarter showed that the vacancy rate across the region tightened to a further 1.3 per cent with the Noosa
council area and Caloundra recording the tightest vacancy in the state at 0.9 per cent. However, median rents have not significantly increased and gross rental yields have remained steady at 4.4 per cent for houses and 4.9 per cent for units. In Caloundra the median rent for a three bedroom house was $415 a week compared with $450 in Mooloolaba, $445 in Buderim and $440 in
My Weekly Preview has some tips for those people who are on the hunt for the perfect rental property… 1) Determine exactly what you are looking for and where you would like to live. This will narrow down your search and enable you to focus on properties that suit your requirements. 2) If you want to keep the weekly rent down consider moving away from the water. A property close to the beach will be more expensive than one further away from the coastline. 3) Talk to a real estate agency’s rental department. It’s a good idea to touch base with an agency and add yourself to their database. That way you will know when properties become available. 4) Keep an eye on local publications and notice boards for rental advertisements. 5) Have required documents ready so you can start the application process immediately. Being organised might get you towards the start of the line. 6) Complete your application form correctly and thoroughly.
INDUSTRY WRAP The signs are looking good for the building industry...
POSITIVE RESULTS
INCREASED LENDING
TOP TERRACES
Southeast Queensland has recorded positive results in regional building approvals however the news isn’t quite as positive for other areas of the state. Master Builders’ manager policy and economics Dyan Johnson says despite the results being polar opposites, the longer-term outlook remains strong, particularly for the south. “Unit approvals have been largely responsible for pushing up the figures in southeast Queensland,’’ Johnson says. “Generally, approvals for the past 12 months are still strong, with total approvals for Queensland up by 26 per cent (seasonally adjusted).”
Finance figures for November released this month by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicate that total lending activity increased during the month, but still remains below the high point reached in August of last year. Housing Industry Association economist Diwa Hopskins says it’s a positive update for Australia’s housing sector. “Looking at the detail, lending activity among investors is still below what appears to be the cyclical peak back in April last year,’’ Hopskins says. “More strength is evident in the owner occupier segment of the market, with the latest level of lending activity on par with recent highs.” The value of investor lending increased by 0.7 per during the month of November, but was 7.7 per cent lower than a year earlier. The value of owner occupier lending, net of refinancing was up by 1.7 per cent and is some 22.8 per cent higher than a year earlier. “(The) figures also highlight that owner occupiers remain active in the new housing market with the value of lending to those purchasing or constructing a new dwelling up by 0.7 per cent during the month to be 8.8 per cent higher than a year previously,’’ Hopskins says. “These signals from housing finance are consistent with other indicators pointing to very healthy levels of activity in the residential construction sector in early 2016.’’
The first in a range of urban terrace home designs have been unveiled at Stockland’s Birtinya at Oceanside community as home buyers race to secure land in the residential precinct of Oceanside Kawana. Stockland’s senior development manager Mark McMahon says the cleverly-designed double-storey homes are an exciting new concept for the community. “Urban terrace homes are becoming an increasingly popular option for home buyers who are looking for an alternative to the traditional house and land package,” McMahon says. “These are the first terrace homes being built at Oceanside Kawana and are perfect for those looking for an urban lifestyle close to shopping, entertainment and employment hubs.’’ The low-maintenance homes have their own freehold titles and no body corporate fees. The first of the three and four-bedroom designs are being built by Thompson Sustainable Homes and Vantage Homes. House and land packages in the terrace range start from $574,000.

What a difference a few hours can make. Last week I saw a local break that was a bit inconsistent, but just a little while later it really started pumping. A certain local break was delivering some nice barrels for the ones who could make them. A few punters were getting axed which is always fun to watch. Stories like that are filtering out everywhere around the Coast. Maybe 2016 is the year of waves? This weekend as it stands has some north winds with small swell. Get amongst it and enjoy.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Jew are working under the motorway bridge and down to the cod hole area with live herring the best baits with the night high tide producing the best quality. TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The focus is on improving partnerships (whether of the romantic, platonic or business variety) as you kick-start a stale marriage or freshen up a long-term friendship. It’s also a wonderful week to envision your dreams for the future and formulate your goals.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] The week starts with a rush as the Mercury/Uranus square revs up your motor and speeds up your mind. But – if you are in too much of a hurry – you could make a messy financial mistake, or upset the applecart with a ridiculously rash statement (either in person or online).
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Mars and Pluto help you view a problematic partnership in a deeper and more profound way. With a few strategic tweaks, the relationship can be turned around and transformed. You’re also keen to show loved ones how much you really care.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Stimulating conversation and careful research are the keys to a productive week. But are you bored to bits with your domestic situation? Has your home life become too rigid and routine? Mars is charging through Villa Leo so get ready for changes and hold on tight.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The stars favour being proactive and making connections with others, especially involving work projects. But don’t be too quick to say exactly what’s on your mind. And avoid making impulsive financial decisions – take the time to think things through.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Avoid the temptation to make hasty financial decisions, as impulsive money moves could land you in a heap of debt over the next few weeks. Friday or Saturday is the time to nurture and feather your nest as you clean, tidy and decorate home and hearth at Villa Libra.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] When communicating with others on Monday, stick to the facts. Otherwise you’re likely to blurt out something that you immediately regret. On Wednesday, Mars and Pluto intensify your need to communicate with others.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] You’re keen to get your point across on Monday but strive to communicate clearly, otherwise you’ll be misunderstood. If you are organised and enthusiastic mid-week, then you can catch up on unfinished business. On the weekend you’re in curious mode and are keen to travel.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Whatever you do, you’re in for the long run. But, if something isn’t working out, don’t be afraid to change horses mid-stream. Mercury and Venus (in your sign) encourage you to be flexible and adaptable, as you compromise and negotiate with class and style.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With Uranus (your ruling planet) squaring Mercury and then squaring Venus, you’re apt to make some hasty half-baked decisions this week involving work and/or relationships. On Sunday, spend some quality time on your own so you can slow down, calm down and re-calibrate.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] This week, make sure you surround yourself with positive people who boost your confidence and encourage your dreams. But avoid getting drawn into discussions about money or politics, as misunderstandings are likely.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] You’re impatient to make some snappy decisions this week but resist the urge to be too blunt. If you blurt out something inappropriate today, you may regret it tomorrow! Think things through before you speak – and realise that your first thought isn’t necessarily the best one.

THE LAST WORD
TEN WELL-PAID JOBS UP FOR GRABS Richard O’Leary asks, why don’t we have a larger field of candidates for the council elections in March?
T
en jobs available on the Sunshine Coast. Flexible working hours. No formal qualifications or experience necessary, $127,000 a year, plus a car. Four-year contract. How many applicants do you think this would get if it appeared on Seek or any of the other employment websites? A hundred, two hundred, a thousand? I’d be willing to bet the queue would reach around the block. Yet those ten jobs are up for grabs and in some cases, there has only been one applicant for each position. Of course, I am talking about the local government elections, which will be held on March 19. As it stands, the current councillors for three divisions look set to run unopposed – Tim Dwyer (2), Jenny McKay (5) and Christian Dickson (6). In the interests of full disclosure, I should say I have worked with all of those
individuals, and this story is not about their ability to do the job. It’s about shining a spotlight on a paucity of nominations for what should be highly sought-after positions. There’s something that’s not quite right about one-candidate elections, it just doesn’t seem democratic to me – dare I say, un-Australian (how I hate that term)? For two candidates, it would mean the last time they faced an opponent was eight years ago. But it’s not the sitting councillors’ fault. Indeed, it could be argued they’ve done such a good job, and everyone in their divisions is so happy that no one feels the need to nominate against them Maybe. Could it be we are all happy to complain about our politicians, but when it comes to the crunch, we are not willing to do anything about it? Could it be that deep down, we know they are thankless jobs? The many hours
spent attending community rallies, school fetes, and council meetings, and for every pat on the back there are a dozen derogatory digs from the side and many a frontal attack? If so, that would be a shame. The first speaks of apathy, and the second of hypocrisy. This is a region that promises so much: a progressive university, a new hospital with unlimited potential to create careers, a new CBD emerging in Maroochydore, a business community becoming more innovative and agile, and all set against a backdrop of beautiful beaches and bushland. There should be a mad scramble to represent this great place. Have I convinced you to have a crack? There is still time, nominations won’t close until two weeks after the writs are issued for the election – so that still leaves you until the middle of next month. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
