OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
he latest facts and figures show 45 per cent of Australians will experience a mental disorder at some stage in their lives. But behind all those numbers are people, and that’s where the new Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute comes in. Although its doors won’t officially open until the middle of the year, work is already well underway to help the individuals who make up those frightening stats. That’s our cover story this week. Also in this edition you get to meet the local bloke behind the new invention creating waves around the world, hitch a ride to see the sights of San Francisco, and test drive the new BMW X1. There’s also plenty of fashion, opinions, local news, beauty and life tips, places to go and people to see, and the Sunshine Coast house, which recently sold for a cool $3.9 million.

QUICK CHAT
A GOOD HEAD FOR BUSINESS Brenda Jamnik of Buderim is the deputy chair of Caloundra Events Centre, has a doctorate in business leadership, is an organisational change and development expert and the author of the book When the Rubber Hits the Road. FIRST JOB?
FAVOURITE PLACE?
Delivering milk in the days of bottles.
My home, surrounded by trees and wildlife that think they own us; close enough to the beach and tourist spots to play tourist for the day and far enough away to hide when I choose to.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My husband, two married daughters (and their husbands), two grandsons and three granddaughters. I always say it doesn’t take much to be a grandparent – a big heart and a bigger bank account.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Create more opportunities for our youth to gain and retain employment on the Coast.
FIRST CAR? HR Holden that had been done up by my brother for racing. It looked like it should have been on the scrap heap which was good because I would drive it the 90 kilometres to school and when the guys at school challenged me to a race, I always won. It helped pay for the petrol.
FAVOURITE BOOK? It would be a toss up between Mao’s Last Dancer, because I was in China during some of the time that he writes about and Shantaram, because of the philosophical questions proposed.
FAVOURITE SONG? Imagine by John Lennon. It sums up world peace in one song without war, bullying and squabbles over materialistic wealth. What a visionary this man was.
BEST BUSINESS ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? When in business look after your clients and the money
A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
will come in. Focus only on the money and one day you won’t have the clients to bring in the money (thanks Mum for the advice).
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Almost 12 years. It was a memorable Valentine’s weekend 2004, which involved receiving (purchasing) a red rose, bottle of champagne, new car and new house.
Being offered a seat on the school bus so I could study year 11 and 12. A turning point, as it equipped me with additional self-confidence and the knowledge of the value of education.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I am in my garden, picking turmeric or tomatoes, enjoying the lotus flowers, daylilies or orchids. I haven’t been successful in growing carrots.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
When service providers over promise and under deliver; in time, quality, product and service.
It is an easy lifestyle, the climate is great, people are embracing, you can travel to anywhere from here if you want to, which will be even better once the new Sunshine Coast Airport runway is given the green light.
Tea, without milk or sugar, anything from a red tea to concentrate, to oolong after a meal, white or green with mint if I want to settle my overactive brain.
What’s at the Markets *** Have you visited our stall ‘Buchi Kombucha’?
TEA OR COFFEE?
Open Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 8am till 3pm Open 2nd Friday of each month till 9pm
Kombucha is a live probiotic, full of good bacteria that is great for your gut. It is great for any digestive issues, including bloating, low energy levels or low immunity. In short, it is a living beverage that is fermented using a blend of organic green and black tea, organic raw sugar (don’t worry, Kombucha converts this sugar to healthy enzymes that benefit your body), and a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. The Kombucha at Buchi Kombucha is brewed using only the finest certified organic ingredients from local farmers. Each bottle is packed with vitality and goodness and tastes great too, so visit their stall at the Farmers Quarter and try some for yourself! Plus, don’t forget new season produce continues to arrive with the first pick of local pineapples, watermelons and rockmelons in good supply, as are pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes and salad crops including a diverse range of local herbs on offer each and every week.

ALL IN THE MIND
Dementia and youth suicide are the focus of a cutting-edge neuroscience institute soon to be launched at USC. Words: Richard O’Leary
Y
ou don’t forget the day your dad asks you to kill him (if the need arises). I was in my early teens. We’d just left his father at the nursing home. It hadn’t gone well. My grandfather, who we had just visited, was not the same man I’d played dominoes with just a few years before. My dad told me my grandfather would have hated for his family to see him like that. “It’s not right. If I ever get that bad you have to end it. Promise me.” I promised. Before that visit my parents had tried to prepare us three boys as best they could. “He may not recognise you.” Pop greeted us enthusiastically as we walked over to shake his hand. He got our names wrong, mixing us up with our cousins, who also come from a family with three boys. But we went along with it – much like adults with a child who has made an error. The mistake was perhaps understandable. He was the father of 11 children and the grandfather of dozens. Pop sat in the corner. A small man in a big chair. The physical environment seemingly growing as his world view shrunk. He’d been lucky to guess we were relatives at all, he often forgot his wife of 50 years. His monosyllabic answers and million-mile stare created a huge distance in a small room. After the first couple of minutes he’d switched off. He was not there anymore. 12 My Weekly Preview | February 5, 2016
12.indd 1
This was a man who had pushed himself all his life to provide for his large family. These days he would be called a workaholic. He was a bloke who never sought a handout – he was a proud man, but without conceit. He was grumpy with us grandchildren, but he loved to play dominoes. He was the best vegie grower in the street, even taking over his neighbour’s yard to grow more food. He really loved his dogs and would walk them every day. At the time we visited him at the nursing home, the garden had long since grown over. The sandy coloured Labradors were also gone – they’d been
home. The patriarch of our family had been stripped of his dignity. Confusion had left him emotionally naked. He was in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He would survive a few more years, his condition always getting worse, never better. My dad didn’t ever want to be in the same position. This is just one story, but it’s being told in a million different ways across Australia and the world every day. It’s a story the University of the Sunshine Coast is going to try to change. It has identified dementia as one of the two priorities to be targeted by its new Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience
“…if we can do an early detection diagnosis, what we can do is empower the person…” Mathew Summers rehomed after becoming obese. Pop had been feeding them many times a day, forgetting he’d already done it – and he could no longer be trusted to take them for walks as he’d get lost in the suburb he’d lived in for decades. Eventually it had become too much for my nan and she had to put him in the
– Thompson Institute, the other being youth suicide. USC’s Professor Doug Maher who has been tasked with establishing the institute says the priorities were clear. “In terms of seriousness…youth suicide is the leading cause of death for folks under 29 years of age in Australia.
Alzheimer’s is now the second leading cause of death in Australia, full stop.” Modelled on the Brain and Mind Institute at the University of Sydney – it’s a translational model – which means it will undertake research into mental disorders and neurological conditions, teach the next generation of professionals to treat those disorders, and provide outreach services for Sunshine Coast residents. Although the institute itself hasn’t physically opened (the building donated by Sunshine Coast philanthropists Nola and Roy Thompson is being retrofitted and is expected to start operating by the middle of the year), the dementia research is already well underway. Associate Professor Mathew Summers was appointed to lead the work just over 12 months ago, and the specialist in ageing, dementia and neuropsychology, has already secured $8 million in grant funding to continue the research he’s dedicated more than 10 years of his life to. “We look at the behavioural and cognitive changes. The most common presentation by somebody with Alzheimer’s (the most prevalent form of dementia) is memory decline. The person starts to forget things they should know. They have difficulty keeping track of what’s going on. And these memory problems can get worse and worse. “They start to have problems with myweeklypreview.com.au
2/02/2016 11:15:01 AM
COVER STORY
attention, concentration, language, knowing their way around locations. All of these problems get magnified and get worse and worse as the disease progresses until the person is unable to look after themselves, and requires 24/7 care, and eventually they will die. It is a terminal condition.” The cause is still not known. The only real risk factor for dementia is age. It’s believed some genetic and environmental factors contribute to the risk, others confer some protection, but most experts agree there is no single cause and there are probably many factors at play.
Doug Maher But the why is probably less important than the what. “It takes the person away. If you can’t remember who you are, and what you did and who your family are, it’s very depersonalising. It’s a terrifying thing to see. Maybe we won’t be able to change whether people get dementia or not, but if we can change the way it progresses and change the quality of life, we can have big impacts.” One of the keys to improving the quality of a patient’s life is early detection, and that’s where Summers has made his biggest breakthrough. “We’ve managed to come up with a series of tests and protocols which have 85 per cent level of accuracy of identifying people who are at risk of developing dementia.” “They’re basic tests of mental function or cognitive function – these are showing
up as good indicators of someone developing dementia in two years’ time – and that’s really important because that tool and the capacity to identify somebody early allows us to start using some intervention before the person gets dementia in the hope of trying to stop or slow that down.” At the new institute, he is expanding on that work by developing a bedside assessment tool for GPs and nurses. “[This will allow us] to identify people at risk of developing dementia, very early on, and then we are going to start using some intervention trials – both pharmaceutical and nonpharmacological trials to see if we can change that outcome for those people. To stop people getting dementia or slowing it coming on – the Holy Grail of dementia research.” A cure may take much longer, if it comes at all. “The magic bullet, the pill that fixes it and reverses it and stops it, I’m not sure we’ll see that in my lifetime, necessarily. But we will find and identify treatments that will slow the progression and may even stop it progressing fully and the person may die from natural causes or another cause, such as a heart attack. “And along the way, if we can slow that disease progression down, if we can do an early detection and diagnosis, what we can do is empower the person. Empower the person to make their own decisions about their life and how they want to live it, and that’s ultimately a very powerful thing to do for anyone with dementia – and early diagnosis can change everything for that person.” Professor Doug Maher says empowerment is what the Mind and Neuroscience Institute is all about. “In one year’s time I’d like to say we’ve made a difference to the wellbeing of people on the Sunshine Coast. I’d like to say we’ve increased the opportunities for Sunshine Coast folk to get treated and educated as students in cutting-edge mental health training. I’d like us to have
made a difference in terms of raising the reputation of the Sunshine Coast as a hub of world-class research in conjunction with the hospital. In five years’ time I’d like to say the building is too small and can we have some more donors.” But the growth of the institute isn’t just about laying the building blocks for increased research, improved treatment, and more health professionals – at its core, it’s about breaking down many of the barriers that still block our acceptance of mental illness for what it is. “Mental health is still the child you hide in the back room. There’s still a lot of stigma around mental health, but it’s simply a medical condition like any other medical condition. We need to take it away from being a taboo subject, to being just like a broken arm or any other medical condition. Where care, compassion and appropriate treatment are what are needed.”

GOLF COURSE GOING GREAT GUNS
One of the world’s leading golf course architects and former professional golfer Graham Marsh officially opened his latest golf course at the Maroochy River Golf Club last week. General manager Charlie McGill said the course started operating last year with almost 40,000 rounds of golf played in the first six months of operation. Playing memberships were also at record levels and 3000 new social members signed up since the club relocated from the Maroochydore Horton Park site. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson praised the Club’s board and members for their hard work and passion over a number of years to help deliver the asset for the region.
3500 Resurfacing work is underway on Maroochydore’s Plaza Parade as part of the council’s Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program. Work will take place between Horton Parade and Southern Drive at night to minimise disruption to traffic and is expected to be completed midmonth. The council maintains 3500 kilometres of local roads through the program.
NEW LAWS FOR DOGS, BEES, ADS A range of changes to Sunshine Coast Council local laws will be activated today after being approved by councillors last week. The extensive local laws review started in October 2014 and the amendments followed a series of workshops, information sessions, individual stakeholder meetings, councillor and community consultation processes. The changes will affect businesses in regards to the placement of kerbside advertising; limit of the number of hives beekeepers can keep and include additional restrictions for dogs at various beaches.
THE WORLD IS COMING… A new campaign promoting the Sunshine Coast as the major events capital of regional Australia, has been unveiled by the Sunshine Coast Council and Visit Sunshine Coast. “The World is Coming…” promotional campaign, will showcase the massive portfolio of events coming to the Sunshine Coast in 2016, including the Mooloolaba Triathlon and the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. In 2016 the region will host 60 major events, which will generate more than $100 million in economic activity.

AUSSIE OCEAN-CLEANING INVENTION SUCKS… IN A GOOD WAY Sunshine Coast ocean lover Andrew Turton and business partner Peter Ceglinski from Byron Bay have taken the world by storm with their ingenious Seabin. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
B
oat builder and professional sailor Andrew Turton is an ocean lover from way back. He grew up at Buddina Beach and has spent his life surfing, sailing, fishing and boating. After deriving a lifetime of enjoyment from the ocean, he embarked on a mission to reduce marine pollution with an invention called the Seabin that, over the past two months, has reached fever pitch around the world. Ten years ago, Turton came up with the idea of an automated marine-cleaning device that pumps water into a basket, catching floating rubbish, oil, fuel and detergents without disturbing marine life. The Seabin Project has now raised more than $300,000 through an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign and an accompanying video has received more than 150 million online views. Based in Spain, where he relocated in 2007 for the America’s Cup, Turton joined forces with his good mate Peter Ceglinski from Byron Bay, a fellow Aussie surfer and boat builder who shared Turton’s disdain for marine pollution. They took the Seabin to the Metsbin Marine Equipment Trade Show in Amsterdam in November last year and it was a hit. “We were in the marina and harbours area and everyone that came past gave us their details and generally wanted to buy one or 15,” Andy says. “We collected over 300 business cards with their personal emails and they could all see their complexes having these bins. “We’ve had the government in Malta contact us and say they want to make it legislation. The amount of school children who have written to us has been really overwhelming. They send us drawings of the way they see the Seabin, with eyes and
decade and his own money developing the Seabin, and with Ceglinski coming on board in October 2015, they hope to soon be taking a wage from the business. All money raised through the crowdfunding campaign will go towards production, with the pair only getting paid once the bins go on sale in around three to five months. Turton’s older brother Dave, who is in his final year of a degree in marine biology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, also plans to join the Seabin team. “I’ve had this idea for so long and Pete brought it back to life,” Turton says. “I always knew I would get it out there at some point. When I first got it to work, I didn’t think people were actually ready for it. Now with so much awareness of our environment, it’s just the perfect time. “It was a pretty crazy idea really. I always thought it was such a simple thing. I’d never ever seen a rubbish bin in the water. People really think it’s a fantastic idea, it’s like watching fire. People will just stand there and watch it; it’s moving, it’s always different, it’s not only just taking the rubbish off the surface but it’s also letting people know okay, we do have a problem with our trash. “My whole thing with this Seabin is just trying to get it out there and letting people know we are all responsible for our waste. My ultimate goal is to see it all around the world, but I hope we’re not going to need them eventually – if we could create an environment where we didn’t need the Seabin, it would be really something. “It’s about the future generations. I’ve had so much enjoyment and made a living all from the ocean and if we keep going the way we’re going, future generations aren’t going to have it.”
Peter Ceglinksi (left) and Andrew Turton’s Seabin is riding a global wave of popularity robotic arms.” The pair are currently negotiating for a French manufacturer to build and distribute the Seabin and will know the outcome by mid-February. The cost of one Seabin is currently around US$3000, but they’re looking into new pumps and motors that could bring the unit price and running costs down. “Most marinas and harbours have their dirty spots where the wind blows most of the rubbish through,” says Andy. “You might need as few as one or two, or it could be as many as ten. I asked the yacht club in Barcelona if I could put one in and within three days it had cleaned up that whole area. I emptied it every morning and afternoon. The placement of the bins is really key; it might be where the water comes in off the streets, where the prevailing wind blows the trash to.”
Turton first came up with the idea of a floating rubbish bin during a regatta in 2002, when he was surrounded by oil, scum and rubbish floating in the water. It was 2005 when he was in Los Angeles preparing for a race that he decided to take action. “I’d been travelling and been exposed to the same areas of trash and every harbour has that problem,” Turton says. “Los Angeles was pretty bad, India was really bad. I got the thing to work in 2011. Basically when I had free time, I would experiment. I would use a wheelie bin and a pump and I would try to make it work. It took quite a while to figure out how to actually do it. The biggest challenge is stopping the plastic from sealing it off. I’ve worked that out now.” He’s keeping the secret close to his chest, however. Turton has spent over a

MY LIFE
4 HEALTH MYTHS BUSTED James Colquhoun from Food Matters and FMTV spills the beans on four ‘healthy’ habits.
H
ere are four supposedly ‘healthy’ habits that could actually be doing more harm than good. 1. Opting for low-fat or fat-free Studies have shown that low-fat and fat-free salad dressings make it more difficult for you to absorb key nutrients in your salad. Carotenoids, which are linked to combating cancer, heart disease, and vision loss, are more readily absorbed from vegies when paired with fat-based dressings. 2. Staying out of the sun Without daily sun exposure, your body struggles to produce adequate vitamin D, resulting in a range of deficiency symptoms including depression, gut problems, fatigue, tiredness, muscle, bone and joint pain. All you need is 10 minutes a day of sunshine on exposed skin without any sunscreen to kickstart your body’s vitamin D generation.
3. Avoiding salt completely When you completely avoid salt, you’re actually restricting a food rich in minerals and electrolytes that help replenish your stores and support optimal health. According to health expert Mike Adams, adding a sprinkle of high-quality salt such as Himalayan or Celtic sea salt into your dietary routine helps to give your mineral intake a gentle boost, with 84 different minerals and trace minerals. 4. Too much focus on cardio Daily walks, a morning run, or an afternoon jog is certainly a great addition to a healthy lifestyle, but when you’re skipping gym sessions or at-home strength training circuits for another run, then your metabolism, muscle structure, and skeleton may be missing out.

San Francisco skyline and Bay Bridge at sunset
6 STOPS IN SAN FRAN There’s a lot more to San Francisco than its bridges. By Mike Osborne
P
eople have been flocking to San Francisco since the 1849 gold rush. The sea lion population is a more recent addition. They started arriving at Pier 39 after the 6.9-magnitude Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, forcing a relocation from their Seal Rocks home north of the city’s Ocean Beach. Initially the boaties and shipping
operator were at war with the fat, lazy and smelly new arrivals. But the boisterous, barking sea lions have since become one of the city’s major tourist attractions. More than 18 million tourists visit San Francisco each year, to photograph the sea lions, visit Alcatraz, cross the Golden Gate Bridge, indulge in the foodie scene, or just play and twist along Lombard Street – the world’s most crooked road.

Other must-visits are the crush of groovy cafes, bars and clubs in the famed village of Haight Ashbury, which inspired the music and writers of the beat generation and the hippies of the Summer of Love in the late 1960s. Here’s a list of the top things to do in San Francisco: 1. NIGHT TOUR OF ALCATRAZ This former island prison is only accessible by boat but the short trip is worth the journey to see where Al Capone was incarcerated. 2. CABLE CAR RIDE Only a few of the original cable cars survive and you will have to queue but the trip is worth the wait as you can hang out the side and take photos. 3. THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE It’s actually a burnt orange colour but spending some time on and around the Golden Gate Bridge, the nearby harbour front and the former military area known as the Presidio is fun and informative. 4. HIPPIE-CENTRAL HAIGHT ASHBURY AND GOLDEN GATE PARK Lined with Victorian and Edwardian wooden houses, Haight Ashbury is synonymous with rock and roll and the hippie-drug culture from the 60s and 70s. The nearby Golden Gate Park is a wonder of gardens, museums, memorials,
windmills and a bison enclosure. 5. GIANTS BASEBALL GAME With a trio of World Series victories (2010, 2012, 2014) to their credit the Giants are hugely popular and their home ground at AT&T Park is close to downtown and the waterfront where home runs can land in the drink. 6. COMPUTER HISTORY MUSEUM IN SILICON VALLEY Silicon Valley is where Google, Facebook and Apple are all working on their next big digital breakthrough. This museum provides a fascinating insight. *The writer travelled with assistance from Visit California.
IF YOU GO… GETTING THERE Qantas flies non-stop from Sydney to San Francisco five times a week, which is more convenient than flying to LA and getting a connection.
STAYING THERE The luxurious and historic Palace Hotel is brilliantly located downtown and close to Union Square, city buses and cable cars. It has an elegantly massive glass-covered atrium and dining room, and a bar famous for the giant and priceless Pied Piper painting.
Cause found for her depression after 30 years on medications, weeks later she was excited, happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back. A woman in her early 30’s attended the clinic having suffered symptoms of depression for most of her adult life and anxiety throughout her childhood. Suffering with symptoms of poor motivation, sadness, anxiety and insomnia, exhaustion then caused anger and irritability. She had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about learning what could be the underlying reasons, to finally address them thoroughly. After taking a full history, pathology to investigate inflammation, genetic conditions, infection, digestion, nutrients, hormone’s and brain chemical levels, it was clear what the causes were. Nothing traumatic had happened during her life to cause her condition, so it was more likely that there would be a biochemical factor involved. Having travelled extensively with her family, living in various countries through her childhood, certain bacteria in water overseas have the capacity to cause symptoms of depression, and so were investigated. We also found she was moody, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day, usually indicating a relationship with food. Blood tests also confirmed two genetic conditions that did not allow her to produce brain chemicals adequately without supplementation of certain nutrients, very simple to treat, though if undetected creates further health problems. This problem alone can lower the immune system, allowing a lifetime of susceptibility to infections, and poor digestion with allergies becoming common. Food reactions cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxifies the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain resulting in low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid function drops during a food reaction, reducing progesterone, creating oestrogen dominance, PMS, menopausal symptoms, mood swings and more. After treatment, starting a diet tailored to her test results, raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, and treating her genetic conditions, she began to feel happier than she’d ever felt. Symptoms of depression affect one in four Australians. Underlying biochemical imbalance may be contributing, and can be resolved quickly. NAVIGATING THROUGH CHOPPY WATERS How to preserve your capital base in retirement If you stopped working today, at age 60, you will likely be retired for 24 years according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
In the heady days of the 1980’s a $1 million dollar deposit in the bank would have produced $140,000 income. For the same amount in 2016, we have seen the income now fall to $30,000 if you are lucky!
The decision to stop work, live from your life’s savings and super, and try to maintain a reasonable standard of living will be the biggest single financial decision you will ever make. Right now, the world’s financial markets are worrying about deflation, plunging commodity prices, fears of an emerging market crisis led by China and uncertainty with the Fed’s first interest rate rise in seven years. So how does the average Investor navigate through this volatility when they need to live from their investments? How can you fund your retirement and keep pace with the relentless rise in the cost of living whilst protecting your nest egg? At a time when finding a good economic news story in the press is like looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack it can leave most Investors feeling confused and concerned about their financial future. Who’d attempt to invest right now without some expert advice? So maybe you are saying to yourself you will stick with cash. What’s not to love about the certainty of a 6 month term deposit when sharemarkets seem to be in a state of decline?
Perhaps you think you can adjust to a lower income? That’s a brave decision in itself and for many people can provide another form of stress to that provided by market volatility. So where do you start?

MY OPINION
COUNTRY OF CYBER JUNKIES
YOU CAN PUT MONEY ON IT
It’s so not cool to take your smartphone into the loo with you, writes Sami Muirhead.
Nathan ‘Nugget’ Dell’s predictions for the 2016 sporting year are not entirely unexpected.
A
re you guilty of a really gross trend increasing in popularity in our country? It seems more of us are taking our phones and tablets into the loo to catch up on a bit of Facebook activity while we are otherwise engaged. Have we all become so used to constantly checking our phones that we cannot part from our technology even for a few minutes? I just think of those gross germs on our handsets combined with the toilet cooties and it is enough to send me running to grab the Dettol. Yuck people, yuck! I do not like the idea of the ladies room being a place to update your status. I like the idea of updating my status on a recliner next to a pool while drinking a cocktail. Possibly in Tahiti. And I am getting a foot rub at the same time. However thanks to us all being time poor, we are swapping the fantasy of lying around on a day bed and using the internet with doing it while we do all of our other chores and get through the day. I stumbled across the latest Sensis report into the way Australians are using social media, and let me tell you people, it is fascinating stuff. Eight out of 10 Aussies use the internet. Seventytwo per cent of us prefer to use our Instagram or Facebook accounts in the lounge. The bedrooms and the study are also popular places where we jump online. The most popular time of the day to use social media is first thing in the morning. We have all done it, right? Reached
for that phone next to your head in bed so you can have a little Facebook session to kickstart your morning mojo. Facebook faithful spend on average a whole working day every single week on the site. How the heck is that even possible? I will tell you how, because it sucks you in and next thing you know you have spent 20 minutes cyber stalking some former school friend who is clearly more successful than you. Now Google is my first computer crush and probably the electronic love of my life. I live on Google. I use it for my radio job, to find celebrity gossip, international and local news, the history of songs, and famous events on that particular day. Yesterday I used it to find out the average wage of the tooth fairy. I once used it to find out how to get a sultana out of my daughter’s nose. I use it to tell me what the weather forecast will be in Paris. Just because. And I occasionally use it for the Google Doctor – actually, I am pretty much a reformed user of the Google Doctor. Avoid the Google Doctor. At all costs. And for the record, there is no way to get a stuck sultana out of a four-year-old’s nose. Google was a barren desert when it came to ideas to get that little squishy thing out. The solution involved a pair of pliers at the hospital and lots of screaming.

016 is going to be a big year in sport, I have yet again gazed deep into the crystal ball, to give you some ‘take to the bank’ predictions.
NRL The Broncos will go one better and win the Premiership. Despite getting the win in Golden Point, legendary coach Wayne Bennett will again make clear his dislike for the concept, as well as the fact he’s not wild about peas in fried rice or pumpkin scones either.
RUGBY UNION The Wallabies will end their 14-year drought and finally take home the Bledisloe Cup. Sadly, it only happens after NZ are excluded from the fixture and the Cup is now awarded to the winner of the Wallabies and Noumea.
CRICKET Aaron Finch will lead Australia to the T20 World Cup in India, Australia will be knocked out in the semifinals by a rampant Virat Kholi led host nation. It won’t be all bad news for the Aussies however. Chris Lynn will win the award for Best Batsman and Shane Watson will win Best Hair.
OLYMPICS Brazil will host the summer games, an event that will be declared The Best Olympics… this year. Australia will finish fifth in the medal tally behind China, USA, Russia and Great Britain. But in a controversial twist, the actual winners of the games will be decided by which nation has the least athletes that catch dengue fever.
TENNIS SOCCER The A League continues to go from strength to strength, adding a new side, The Penrith Poodles. Mitchell Pearce is rumoured for a code switch, but is only truly interested in the mascot.
AFL Hawthorn win their fourth flag in succession, proving they are one of the greatest sides ever, however all eyes are on Essendon, with no players testing positive for illicit substances but four senior players contracting Boogie Fever.
Serena Williams overcomes her loss in the Australian Open to win the next three grand slam events, Wimbledon, and the French and US opens. Frustrated by the monotony of her success, commentators suggest Serena should go pick on somebody her own size. Serena ends the year looking for Dr Bruce Banner in the hopes of making him angry.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
COMMODITIES OUTLOOK BLEAK Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he 168th meeting of the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) ended with a communique that made no mention of a production target. Essentially, there is no limit as to how much oil member states can pump until OPEC meets again in the middle of 2016. Clearly, there was fundamental disagreement between OPEC members. But the lack of agreement to manage production is consistent with the view that key members of OPEC, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, retain the goal of defending market share, rather than supporting prices. To this end, there appears no prospect for an immediate return to
equilibrium in the oil market, despite the persistence of low oil prices placing pressure on the finances of OPEC member states. Ord Minnett envisage oil prices remaining under pressure into the first quarter of 2016, without a shift in the production policies of individual OPEC member states or other unforeseen interruptions to oil supply. Furthermore, despite more negotiations around a collective effort with non-OPEC producers, there appears little prospect of such a deal at this juncture. There was an explicit reference that cuts to non-OPEC production would help rebalance the oil market – a process that is underway, albeit gradually. Ultimately, the supply adjustment necessary for oil markets will probably come from non-OPEC sources, but only once they have worked through the start-up of new supplies from long lead-time projects. Of course, oil is not the only commodity suffering from too little demand and too much supply.
The same imbalances are occurring across the spectrum of metals markets. What is interesting is that suppliers are responding to weaker prices by dramatically cutting costs and applying ever-advancing technology. This means that supply cuts that would typically occur are not forthcoming and the marginal cost of production keeps adjusting lower, thereby supporting ever-lower commodity prices. Ultimately, doing more with less will eventually plateau, but in the meantime, the commodity outlook remains difficult. It is partly this reason that Ord
Minnett recently downgraded the recommendation on BHP Billiton. Admittedly, the stock had already fallen on weaker commodity prices, but the Samarco dam failure in Brazil was an unforeseen event that will have a significant effect on the company’s cash flows. The Brazilian government has indicated that it will sue the joint venture, of which BHP holds 50 per cent, for US$5.2 billion. It is estimated that lower commodity prices and Samarco related costs combine to produce a US$10 billion cumulative deficit of free cash flow in covering dividend commitments over the next couple of years. It is also feasible that there is a shortfall in complying with an ‘A-’ credit rating. Mark Davidson is an Authorised Representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. LEADING LOCAL BUILDER BRANCHES OUT TO TACKLE SMALL LOT ENVIRONMENTAL HOMES One of the Sunshine Coast’s oldest building firms Costa Homes have created its own small lot home division to cater to the needs of buyers who want a high quality home but are working on a tight budget. CEO Frank Gentile said Costa Homes provided buyers with an opportunity to live in a high quality home which is designed and built by the experienced and award winning Costa team. “Costa have been operating on the Sunshine Coast since 1970, we are a family based company and over that time we’ve learned a lot about local market and what buyers really want in their homes. “We will continue to build luxury bespoke homes through the Costa Designer Luxury brand, but we’ve now got over 30 different brand new floor plans and over 70 different brand new facades for small lot environments, which we can offer buyers through our All Inclusive Living, Costa Lifestyle Collection,” he said.
Frank said launching the company’s first display home back in 2010 at Stockland’s Birtinya display village was the genesis to move into the standard plan home market. “The display home gave us the perfect opportunity to talk direct to the public about what they were looking for and the more people we spoke to, the more we saw a great opportunity to deliver something unique to the market, with the Costa stamp of quality all over it. “The beauty of a small family company like Costa Homes is that all directors and stakeholders are hands on which means, great quality and service and you are not just a number to us. At the same time we are big enough to be able to be competitive on pricing to the big players in the market. “Another difference with Costa is that we run a very transparent process and tell you the total price of your home upfront rather than give you an unfinished home starting price, which inevitably blows out prior to going to contract and in variations post contract to complete the home.” “For clients wanting something a little extra on our inclusive turn key homes, we have incorporated the ‘Vogue’ or ‘Deluxe’ upgrade options which provide an even better finish. We can also incorporate a pool, starting at just $23,800, the 20 lineal metre magna pool at just $25,860 and landscaping packages starting at just $2,480.” Frank said.

his week my wife celebrated her 40th in style with a bunch of buddies and a dump truck full of champagne. Twenty-three liquored up ladies, kicking off their heels and dancing on tables, or as Charlie Sheen used to call it, Tuesday breakfast. Tell you what I learned from the shenanigans, though. Hell hath no fury like a woman tagged in a Facebook photo that she believes makes her look fat. Man, the fallout. Not one of them looked anything but beautiful, maybe a little turpy, but certainly not unattractive. And yet if the right picture filter isn’t employed, you’re in more trouble than a Sydney Rooster on Australia Day. The cool thing is, unlike many folk I know, Michelle’s all sweet with busting out the big four-oh. She said, “Todd, I may be 40 but I feel like a 20-year-old…” and I was like, “Yeah, that’s great honey but where are you gonna find one of those at this hour?” Truth is, she goes alright my missus. She is well fit and to simply say that I’m punching above my weight is an outrageous understatement. When I told people last year that I was approaching 40, they weren’t sure from which direction. No really, I’ve been blessed with a head like a bashed crab. When I was born, the midwife took one look at me and slapped my parents. I’m so handsomely challenged, when I walk into a bank they turn off the security cameras. It’s all true. The picture on this page, it took NASA-engineered technology to get it to that point. Of
course, they’re not miracle workers so hey – what are you gonna do? At this stage in my life, I’m more out of shape than Clive Palmer’s political career. I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve got the high score on at least seven different blood pressure machines around town. I’m so unfit the Internet Explorer in Botswana or even more remote than that, Perth, could run faster than me. The one great thing though… I’m not alone. There’s an officially unofficial club for us punching well above our weight type people. Of course there’s me, James Packer (again), Paul Gallen, Andy ‘huffy pants’ Murray (Google Kim Sears if you ain’t sure), Jay Z (I know he’s pretty swag and all that but c’mon man, she’s Beyonce), Deborah Lee Furness, one of the greatest Aussies ever, an incredible human being but she’s on with Wolverine right, and of course there’s the poodle from the Mitchell Pearce hullaballoo. Or maybe that’s the other way around. Lucky for me, dear friend, God gave us beer, which I’m sure he invented late on the sixth day, that’s why he rested on the seventh with a hangover that could kill a baby rhino. Thanks to my ace mates at Stone and Wood, my wife

MY TIME
Michelle can drink me pretty any day of the week, or as us southern folk like to say, “drink me purdy”. The legends of Byron have repackaged their well famous S&W Lager, tweaking it here and there to present the delicious new elixir known now as the Green Coast Lager. Originally, craft beer swillers turned their backs on all things lager, favouring pale ales and other fancy brews. But the trusty old lager has fought back and now the first beer S&W ever put in a bottle has fast become one of its biggest sellers. The new look lager (gone from green bottle to brown) is now bottled unfiltered just like the keg, so the extra crisp and refreshing draught taste can now be experienced at your place. Making lager isn’t an easy process, but the evolution of the Green Coast is evidence enough that S&W know their stuff. This malt driven, European style lager features soft herbal
hops with a slightly sweet malty edge and just a hint of bitterness. Easy to drink at breakfast time, just before church on a Sunday, but only one or two, as it’s a solid 4.7 percenter. Not being a massive lager connoisseur, the Green Coast isn’t my first pick for a brew from Stone and Wood, but if lager is the beer of the day, then it’s this little number every time. Happy to give the S&W Green Coast Lager a respectable 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up.

BACK TO SCHOOL
T
housands of Sunshine Coast school students have returned to school and their university counterparts will begin study in the coming weeks. It’s shaping up as another big year for our primary, senior and tertiary institutions as they continue to turn the Sunshine Coast into the smart region. It will be particularly special for the University of the Sunshine Coast, which turns 20 this year. From humble beginnings in 1995, it has transformed itself into one of leading drivers of the region’s economy, agenda and future, while also providing locals the ability to go to university close to home.
A NEW SKILL SET The challenges of managing one of Queensland’s largest privately-owned radiology services have inspired a leading medical specialist to pursue a postgraduate business degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Dr Siavash Es’haghi, who is the Executive Managing Director of Imaging Queensland, decided to enrol in USC’s Executive Master of Business Administration after the radiology clinic he founded in 2007 rapidly grew to incorporate 19 practices and more than 250 staff. When he established the business, Dr Es’haghi was a highly trained radiologist, but had no business qualifications. “I always had the aspiration of owning my own business and, although I didn’t have any formal business education, my philosophy was that hard work and perseverance would lead to success,” he said. “I opened my first practice in Warana and was lucky to receive very good support from local doctors and the community. I believed that if I provided

“Although we are only halfway through the course, I am already noticing the benefits” the best service to my patients then people would come to my clinic, which proved to be correct.” Sunshine Coast Radiology grew to include eight practices in the region, and Dr Es’haghi soon partnered with like-minded doctors to establish Central Queensland Radiology, Moreton Bay Radiology and the Advanced Women’s Imaging Clinic in Nambour. Imaging Queensland’s clinics now see around 1,200 patients per day, and the business has secured competitive tenders with the Sunshine Coast
University Private Hospital and the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service. Dr Es’haghi said that as the business continued to grow and employ more people, he became aware of a need to deliver more strategic leadership. “My education was in medicine, and previously my main focus was to simply provide the highest level of service and care,” he said. “While that goal remained, I also recognised that I needed to learn how successful businesses operate so I would know how to improve.” Dr Es’haghi decided to further his formal education through USC’s EMBA program, which is delivered through intensive weekend workshops. “The course has been extremely valuable,” he said. “We’ve completed a range of modules, including creative decision-making, leadership and marketing. In trying to understand and apply these theories, I have already made some changes and improvements to the business. “Although we are only halfway through the course, I am already noticing the benefits.” Dr Es’haghi, who was among a group of 26 EMBA and MBA students who recently travelled to China for an intensive nine-day study tour, said he would encourage any executive to consider USC’s EMBA program. “Whether it’s a big or small business, if you are looking to improve and learn more about what drives success then the course is well worth it,” he said. In the 2015 survey of Australian MBA programs conducted by the Australian Financial Review, USC’s Executive MBA program was ranked number five in Australia. In the rankings by graduates, it was ranked number one in Australia in the categories Improvement in Skills and Value for Money.

on’t look now, but even the babies of the SUV world are growing up. The premium compact SUV segment might still seem like a fledgling enterprise – with some of the world’s top manufacturers only now just entering this specialised market – but one of the trailblazers has already been
pensioned off. I talk of the BMW X1, which recently launched its second generation at the same time some rivals are barely rolling out their first. It goes to show, once again, what innovators the folk from Munich truly are when it comes to predicting – or creating – future trends in the motoring landscape.
Turn the clock back seven years and it’s fair to say not everyone was convinced that the world would embrace a smallish, rather pricey faux off-roader based on the same running gear as a premium hatchback. The original X1 was something of a leap of faith for BMW – but one which has paid off handsomely. That was 2009.
Audi was first to follow suit, two years later, with its smart Q3, but arch-rival Mercedes-Benz took considerably longer to roll out its GLA. The Lexus NX has been equally slow out of the blocks. It’s rare these fierce rivals are so out of synch when it comes to developing niche models – evidence of how far BMW was ahead of the curve with this one. What’s more, this second-generation X1 seems well-placed to drive home that advantage. Bigger, more refined and better equipped than the original version, this new X1 has some sizeable shoes to fill – almost three quarters of a million of them, in fact. That’s how many X1 owners have signed on the bottom line over the model’s seven-year existence, including more than 10,000 in Australia, with many of them no doubt eager to see how BMW has gone about advancing the breed. It’s clear BMW has set out to improve the recipe rather than reinvent it with this new model. They’ve done so by improving the car’s space, functionality and versatility while rectifying many of the original model’s weaknesses. Once a little awkward in appearance, the new X1 is beautifully proportioned, continued over>

MOTORING
<from previous page more powerful and purposeful in its design. It feels bigger and more refined inside, compared to the original which always felt a touch cheap. We drove this new X1 in its most potent, and most highly-specified form – the Xdrive2.5i (the X signifying allwheel-drive; the numbers indicating BMW’s feisty turbocharged two-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine). Its 170 kilowatts and 350Nm give the X1 ample punch to match its agile handling and, in its newly-released guise, very athletic road presence. Even at its most expensive level the X1 feels like pretty decent value, thanks to a substantially upgraded interior which feels classier and roomier. BMW claimed improved space and cabin ambience and segment-leading driving dynamics for this model. Equipment levels have been upgraded. The two-wheel-drive models, interestingly, go against a BMW’s long-held preference for rear-wheeldrive, instead driving through the front wheels. It seems that the all-wheel-drive versions also favour the front wheels in normal driving situations – with the slightest hint of torque-steer evident in our test vehicle.
The new X1 has grown in almost every direction – most noticeably in height where it’s now 53mm taller than the previous model. Legroom and cargo space has also increased substantially. Yet despite being taller, it looks and feels better proportioned, far more robust and more substantial than the original version. Its styling, too, is more in keeping with the cues established by its bigger X3 and X5 stablemates. In fact it’s not easy at first glance to tell the new X1 and bigger X3 apart. Australian designer Calvin Luk is the man credited with penning this chunkier, more purposeful look. Inside the story is the same – the X1 has more space, more sophistication and more technology than the original, which was sometimes accused of feeling
a bit cheap and flimsy for a car wearing this famous badge. The punchy turbo engine is almost an indulgence in this type of machine – it’s probably not really meant to be driven quite as aggressively as all that power encourages you to do. But significantly the X1 handles it well with very assured, confidence-building handling and turn-in characteristics – particularly with Sport mode selected to stiffen the handling and sharpen throttle and transmission response. Perhaps the only criticism we could find was its ride, which struck us at first as being particularly harsh, although that impression faded as our week-long test progressed. Certainly the suspension setup is firm and the low-profile, hard-sided run-flat tyres further contribute to this firmness. But having been somewhat critical of BMW for moving away from its traditional sporty, driver-focused personality in some models, like the 3-Series, in recent times, it’s probably unfair to decry the X1 for returning to those roots. After all, that’s what evolution is supposed to be about.
BMW X1 x-DRIVE2.5i HOW BIG? Officially belonging to the compact segment, it looks and feels bigger than the original X1 – the more legroom, cargo space and a more robust feel than its predecessor. HOW FAST? Our test model was impressively so – its turbocharged two-litre petrol engine delivers 170kW for a 0-100km sprint time of 6.5 seconds. That’s pretty sharp for a car designed for utility value. HOW THIRSTY? With fuel-saving measures like automatic stop-start function, an eight-speed automatic and ultraefficient engine, the most potent X1 manages 6.6L/100km. If you’re more budget-focused, the entrylevel turbo-diesel sips as little as 4.3L/100km. HOW MUCH? We tested the flagship model costing $59,900 plus onroads; although the X1 range starts at $49,500 for the xDrive18d (twowheel-drive turbo-diesel).

with MWP’s man in the water
Well I can tell you the snow is falling in Japan and North America, looking like a red hot season unfolding…and yes I am going snowboarding where runs (waves) are six to 16 kilometres long and you don’t have to paddle back out… simply hop on the chair lift and giggle all the way to the top. That will be me for the next three weeks. As for you crazy cats looks like more waves are a coming however some strong winds are attached. Enjoy what you can. But I sense we might be in for a great year of waves!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Whiting are taking yabbies on the drift over the sand bank at Bli Bli at high tide with recent rains bringing on the mud crabs at the mouth of feeder creeks. You can get flathead and jew in the Cod Hole on live bait or sinking lures. There are bream on the top of the tide along the southern banks of the Maroochy River near the high rise buildings. SURF: You can find sand whiting and small dart along Maroochy Beach using cured worms (they stay on better) and red tubing near the hook. Good quality tailor are surprising anglers at Pincushion and Point Cartwright with pillies and silver slugs. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow. Spotted mackerel are taking weighted pillies just off Point Cartwright and Twelve Mile, Caloundra. Murphy’s Reef and Coolum are returning mixed reef fish with dawn and dusk the best, using cut baits. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is returning bass on deep divers and saratoga on surface poppers or flies. Silver perch and jew are preferring earthworms when worked just along the weed line. Recent rains have stirred the water up so rely on your sounder to find the depth where the fish are and try different lures and baits to see which is preferred on the day.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 The new moon and Uranus bring out your independent side, which can express itself as selfishness. By all means do your own thing, but don’t neglect the needs of others. Attached Aries – do something wildly romantic with your partner on Valentine’s Day.
TAURUS April 21 – May 21 How’s your career? Are you overdue for a pay rise or a promotion? Is it time to look for a better job? This week the challenge is to make work a pleasure, rather than a chore. Wednesday is a wonderful day to enjoy connecting with foreign friends via email.
GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You’re at your curious best, as the new moon stimulates your brain cells so you’re eager to learn something new via travel, study or research. You prefer love to be all fun, with no heavy demands or expectations. But it’s certainly not working out that way at the moment.
CANCER June 22 – July 23 Relationships are put under the microscope, as you work on the connection between you and loved ones. It’s also the perfect time to reboot a financial arrangement. With Venus in your partnership zone, Valentine’s Day should be extra romantic.
LEO July 24 – Aug 23 You prefer to be the star of the show but, if you focus on others and pay close attention to the way you communicate, then your relationships will improve. Venus and Jupiter encourage you to come up with creative and proactive ways to make more money.
VIRGO Aug 24 – Sep 23 Turn your attention to health and fitness as the new moon activates your wellbeing zone. Is some tweaking necessary so you can feel more fabulous in 2016? When it comes to a child or friend, make sure you provide plenty of support and listen to their concerns.
LIBRA Sep 24 – Oct 23 The new moon fires up your entertainment zone, which may prompt you to swing into mega-party mode. For quieter Librans, the stars favour spending quality time with family and friends – especially on Wednesday. When it comes to love are you feeling brave?
SCORPIO Oct 24 – Nov 22 Monday night’s new moon puts you in the mood to shake up your domestic routine. So do something different that makes your heart sing. Wednesday is wonderful for group activities and social media, as you’re influenced by innovative new ideas.
SAGITTARIUS Nov 23 – Dec 21 Fun, excitement, thrills and spills are on the agenda on Wednesday so be prepared for a wild card. Concentrating on developing a second stream of income looks promising but you need to be patient. Attached archers – you’ll feel romantic on Valentine’s Day.
CAPRICORN Dec 22 – Jan 20 Venus is vamping through your sign (until February 17) so it’s time to be fabulously flirtatious and irresistibly charming. Attached Capricorns – you’re set for a sophisticated and sexy Valentine’s Day. Romance, stylish surroundings and gourmet food are calling!
AQUARIUS Jan 21 – Feb 19 With the new moon in your sign (and Chinese New Year) it’s time for a completely fresh start. You’re feeling independent and inventive (but also reckless and rebellious) so strive to use your electric energy in positive and productive ways.
PISCES Feb 20 – March 20 Your imagination and intuition are boosted by the new moon. So make sure you channel your energy into creative, spiritual or solo pursuits, otherwise you’ll just feel confused and overwhelmed. Singles – be proactive about making new connections online.

THE LAST WORD
LESSONS LEARNED IN THE HOLIDAYS Richard O’Leary reflects on a summer of fun and misadventure with two cheeky boys. Now that my boys are back in school for another year, it’s given me some time to reflect on the holidays. I was lucky enough to get to spend plenty of time with my five- and seven-yearolds. Sure, there were challenges, but so many learning experiences as well – and sometimes even for the boys.
MY TOP 7 OBSERVATIONS OF A SUMMER WELL SPENT: 1. The joy of unpredictability. Getting into conversations with your children during long car rides can have the most unexpected results, including answering questions such as, “Where does the poo go in planes?” 2. Slip and slide. There are few things that bring more joy to children than rolling out a plastic sheet, adding detergent and water and taking a run and jump. Please note – have an anti-itch ointment on hand for
6. Never assume. “Get out of my room”, “Get out of my room”, my five-year-old yelled at five in the morning. He wasn’t shooing his brother as I expected, but trying to encourage a baby bat to leave his room. I still don’t know how it got in, and I still don’t know how it got out. I live in fear of a dead animal smell in our house.
potential ant bites on necks, ankles and any other exposed skin. 3. Gumboot adventures. Some kids stay inside when it rains, my sons grab their wellies and raincoats and go on adventures. Finding out things like where that small waterfall in the yard is coming from and providing helpful advice on how Dad may want to clear the concrete drain near the shed.
7. Font of little knowledge. “Why is there an Easter bunny? Because rabbits don’t lay eggs,” my fiveyear-old asks. “It’s a European tradition to coincide with spring – rabbits represent fertility, and so do eggs”, I say. “But Easter is in autumn in Australia.” He got me there. So I ask him if he’s interested in where the poo goes in planes.
4. Snakes alive. There’s something strangely reassuring when your eldest son very casually walks into the house and says, “There’s a snake in the shed”. I think he’ll cope just fine with what life throws at him. 5. Acts of courage. Only a seven-yearold boy would be brave enough to cut out shapes from a cardboard box with a serrated knife while wearing no clothes.
