didn’t get off to a good start with Valentine’s Day. When I was a boy, a friend dropped off a card at my front door before school with a message to meet her during the day, only for it to blow away in the hot westerly winds my country town was known for. I found it that afternoon lodged against the fence, but by then, the moment had passed. This week My Weekly Preview takes a look at how to make the day more of a success – and a hint, it won’t cost you a lot of money. Also this week, you get the chance to talk with Dr Karl about what’s wrong with our education system, travel from Vietnam to Cambodia on a pushie and test drive the little Audi with the big rap. As always, there’s plenty of fashion, local news, places to go, tips on staying healthy and happy, and all the latest on Sunshine Coast property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
A SOUND DECISION
Tony Lawrence says leaving the corporate world to run his own business and spend more time with his family was the best decision he ever made. Work: Having the courage to leave the corporate world, sacrificing a pretty good salary package, for quality time with the girls as they grew up. In hindsight, it was really no contest.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN ON THE COAST? Twenty-three years on the Sunshine Coast. Moved here from Brisbane to team up with (marry) Kerrie.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
It doesn’t take a lot to make me happy, just simple things like being at home on the weekend on the deck in my favourite squatter’s chair, reading the weekend papers.
I’m lucky enough to have a business that runs from a head office in Maleny, with a branch office in Brisbane… lots of driving (which I enjoy because I’m a car enthusiast). I live at Balmoral Ridge (five minutes from work) overlooking the coast. Just how good can it get?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU? Negative people, particularly parents who whinge and moan to their kids about how bad things are in the world. I try to avoid negative people. I’m definitely a glasshalf-full person.
FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Of course we love the hinterland, particularly our village of Maleny. Still relatively unspoilt, beautiful countryside, great community spirit and wonderful eclectic mix of people.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? We generally bring them home and entertain on our veranda. If we want to dine out, then we’ll go into town (Maleny).
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’m very happy with my lot, but it would make things a lot easier for the business with a decent broadband connection (I do hope the council have success with their pitch for an undersea broadband cable).
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? I’ll have to give you three… can’t split them. Wedding day, birth of Sophie and birth of Cassie. All my dreams fulfilled.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? I know that a good night’s sleep will greatly reduce the perceived magnitude of almost any issue. Sometimes a drive along the top of the range will also do the trick.
Sophie, Tony, Kerrie and Cassie Lawrence
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT WAS A TURNING POINT? I am a professional engineer and had a corporate career in Brisbane. I came home one night a little frustrated with work and Kerrie ‘encouraged’ me to ditch my job/career and manage our small family business, Sound Images. She had an ulterior motive, finding it very challenging to manage the business and attend meetings with our new baby, Sophie. This was 20 years ago and my focus turned around from running someone else’s large business (Smorgon Steel) to running our own small business. Soon learnt that cash flow was king… not ROI.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not many, but I did reach a major crossroads at 17. I had gained my private pilot’s licence courtesy of a flying scholarship from the RAAF and certainly had a potential flying career in front of me. But I was also awarded a scholarship at the end of year 12 to study engineering at QUT. Chose the latter, but I have occasionally wondered if I’d made the right choice.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Personal: Being the best husband I can be to my gorgeous wife Kerrie and the best dad I can be to our two beautiful daughters, Sophie and Cassie.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Life is a journey, not a destination. Make sure that you enjoy as much of the journey as you can (rules are made to be broken, live life on your terms, never ever apologise for it, go against the grain, refuse to conform, take the road less travelled).
TEA OR COFFEE? Absolute coffee junkie. Skinny flat white. I know I drink too much of it, but I keep telling myself that I really could cut back, if I had to.
NRL OF AFL? Neither. I’m a cricket tragic.

HEAD OVER HEELS
Valentine’s Day might be romantic, but what your loved one really needs from you is something money can’t buy. Words: Candice Holznagel
“Australians spent almost $800 million on Valentine’s Day in 2014, according to IBISWorld”

alentine’s Day. For some, these two words send a shiver of joy down their spine. For others, it instils a sense of dread. Those not keen on celebrating the day of hearts and flowers claim it’s commercialised, expensive and that they don’t need a calendar date to tell their loved one how they feel. On the other side of the fence, believers say it’s a day of love, a time to show your romantic side. Either way you look at it, there is no escaping the fact that Valentine’s Day is a hugely celebrated day around the world – not to mention, lucrative. According to research company IBISWorld, Australians spent almost $800 million on Valentine’s Day in 2014. The average person spent $86 on their partner with greeting cards and flowers being matched with luxurious gifts. A whopping $441 million was spent on travel, $93 million on flowers, $90 million on chocolates and $68 million on clothing and lingerie. The question remaining is, what’s more important – buying someone a gift or being present in the relationship? My Weekly Preview spoke to three women to determine which wins in the debate: presents versus presence. 12 My Weekly Preview | February 12, 2016
12.indd 1
RHIANNON BELL Family Challenge Psychology Clinic Rhiannon Bell has worked as a psychologist on the Sunshine Coast for the past seven-and-a-half years. She says whether to put the focus on presents or presence in a relationship comes down to three things – individual preference, love language, and couple values. “In saying that, I have never had a couple seek relationship counselling because their primary problem was a lack of presents in the relationship. “I have seen many, however, who felt disconnected from each other and
bed, being on their phone on a date, watching too much TV, to keeping up with the demands of children and housework, there are many things competing for our partner’s attention. “Remaining present in a relationship is something that couples must be mindful of prioritising if they want to maintain connection.” But how exactly can couples improve the quality time they spend together? “For some couples this looks like weekly date nights whether at home or out, for others it’s turning the TV off at dinner to enjoy each other’s company and conversation, or turning phones off
“Remaining present in a relationship is something that couples must be mindful of prioritising...” Dr Rhiannon Bell complain that their partner wasn’t present in the relationship,’’ she says. “From spending too much time at work and bringing work home, to checking Facebook and Instagram in
after 7pm so that they can focus on connecting with each other. “However it looks, couples need to communicate with each other about the type of time that they enjoy spending
together and prioritise this by scheduling it into their day or week like any other important appointment or activity that they value.” Dr Bell says being time poor, working long hours and the daily pressures of life impact on relationships. To maintain connection it’s important that couples prioritise spending regular quality time together. That’s not to say that presents don’t play a role in romantic relationships, particularly for people who view gifts as a way to show love and affection. Relationship counsellor and author Gary Chapman has sold more than eight million copies of his book The 5 Love Languages – a concept which dissects the different ways people feel and view love. He, and many psychologists, believe that understanding what our partner’s love language is helps us to know how we can best express love to our partner in a way that helps them feel most loved. “To a person whose love language is receiving gifts, gifts play one of the most important roles in a relationship,’’ Dr Bell explains. “For these people, gifts are a physical token of love – they hear, feel, and experience love through receiving a gift that says: ‘I know you’. “For the person whose love language myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY
ROBYN GRADY Romance author Robyn Grady is no ordinary, run-of-themill author. She has university majors in English literature and psychology and is the award-winning author of no less than 15 Harlequin Mills and Boon novels. With thousands of copies of her works sold, it’s fair to say the Caloundra writer knows a thing or two about romance. After working for 16 years in the television industry, she enrolled in university and followed her life-long dream of writing a book. Her first romance novel was published nine years ago after she signed with an agent and sold in New York and London within weeks. It had been a long, frustrating journey but I was never going to give up,’’ Grady says. “Touching readers with my stories is what I was meant to do in this life. I have just e-published on Amazon The Complete Holiday Romance Series, stories that cover Christmas, Easter, Mother’s Day, Summer Break, Halloween and, of course, Valentine’s Day.’’ The mother of three says her own

is gifts, it may not necessarily be the price tag on the gift that communicates love, but the thought that has gone into the gift.” At the end of the day, most couples are seeking one thing – a long lasting, happy relationship. So, what’s the key to achieving this? “Happy couples that last the distance are committed to pursuing connection with each other – even after 10, 20, or 50 years,’’ Dr Bell says. “Happy couples make a commitment to pursue and maintain various levels of connection – emotional connection; intellectual connection; physical connection and playful connection.’’
Author Robyn Grady life is not short of romance and she is looking forward to celebrating on February 14. “My husband is a romantic at heart. “I always receive a beautiful card and we usually go out to dinner at our fave place.’’ It comes as no surprise that Grady believes presence should be the major focus of any relationship. “I love to give presents,’’ she says. “We always make a big deal of the kids’ birthdays and at Christmas. It’s also great to receive a perfect gift. “But relationships really are about being there, about listening and supporting the people you care about. “My husband and I never run out of things to say to each other. “We’re always happy to see each other at the end of each day. “That’s what counts.” As for achieving a happy relationship, here’s some advice from one of Australia’s most successful romance authors: “You can’t expect to receive red roses every week. “That’s not what it’s about. “You both have to want it and be willing to make an effort… to hold hands, to cuddle, to let the other person know that they are, and always will be, your special someone.”
Mother and wife Landsborough’s Amyee Valentine knows a thing or two about Valentine’s Day. “It’s amazing when you say our last name to people, they say… ‘oh, how romantic’,’’ the mother of two laughs. It’s a name that has multiple meanings: not only did Amyee take on husband Shane’s surname but the two were married on Valentine’s Day. What’s more, her step-grandfather’s name was Valentine and he was born on February 14. “Valentine’s Day is a family connection we had. “It was about 15 years ago when Shane and I met… we met at the local pub. “I was there with friends and he was there with friends. “We were together about a year and a half before we were married. I wanted our day to fall on the next Valentine’s Day that fell on a Saturday.’’ “Our first wedding anniversary is the most memorable,’’ Valentine says. “Shane had been deployed overseas as he was in the Air Force so he missed it. “But I still got 12 long stem roses delivered to my door on the day. “All I knew was he was out in the desert somewhere in Dubai. “It was hard… he was away for the last six months of the first year we were married. “He could only ring at certain times of the day. It would be 1am and my phone would ring. “We did that religiously so that we could hear each other’s voices.’’ Twelve years on and the day still holds special meaning. “I think we value the time together more. I think spending time together is more important (than gifts) but it’s nice to get a little surprise just to show you care, even a card or a bunch of flowers. “Spending time together now as a family is our priority.”
TIME FOR A NEW KITCHEN??
FIVE WAYS TO CELEBRATE 1. Give back – volunteer or donate to a charity of your partner’s choice. 2. Make your own – nothing says I love you like putting time and effort into creating a gift. Great do-it-yourself gift ideas include a photo, memory or recipe book. 3. Cook – stay in and spend time in the kitchen cooking together. 4. Get outdoors – pack a picnic and head to the beach. 5. Memorable moment – if you want to go out for a night with your loved one, why not recreate your first date? It’s a great way to celebrate your history and love as a couple.
LOVE LANGUAGES Identifying your partner’s love language will help in strengthening your relationship, according to Gary Chapman: 1. Words of affirmation – hearing affirming words from your partner makes you feel loved, e.g. “I love you”, “You look beautiful”, “You’re so important to me”. 2. Quality time – you feel most loved when you spend time with your partner. 3. Receiving gifts – you feel loved when your partner gives you a meaningful gift. 4. Acts of service – actions speak louder than words. You feel loved when your partner does important tasks for you, such as cleaning, washing your car. 5. Physical touch – physical touch and affection from your partner helps you feel loved.

MUSICAL WILDLIFE ENGAGES KIDS Two hundred Unity College students, school staff and community group members celebrated World Wetlands Day at the future Caloundra South development site last week by listening to the music of the wetlands. Frog expert Doctor Ed Meyer explained the meaning behind the music produced by the wildlife. They explored the variety of conditions, tested water quality and discussed the pending collaborative research project to set up acoustic equipment to monitor the fauna as it repopulates the once degraded pine plantation.
LOCAL SWIMMERS DO US PROUD Two Sunshine Coast Grammar School athletes, Dan O’Meally and Tom Reid, were selected in the Under 14 Queensland Royal Life Saving Squad that lined up to compete at the 2016 Australian Pool Life Saving Championships Tom Reid and Dan O’Meally on the Gold Coast last month. O’Meally placed second in the overall point score. The school’s teacher in charge of pool lifesaving, Jeannie Baxter-Reid, said the students performed brilliantly and were outstanding ambassadors for the sport.
80 HECTARES ACQUIRED
Mayor Jamieson and Cr Baberowski A number of endangered and significant flora and fauna species contained within 80 hectares on two hinterland properties are now protected thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Levy Land Acquisition Program. The council acquired two new properties – MacDonalds Road, Bald Knob and Burgess Avenue, Maleny for the tune of $1.495 million. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the organisation now had almost 3000 hectares of environmentally significant land that has been purchased for conservation through the levy. “Through the Environment Levy, council aims to maintain, and where possible improve, the biodiversity of our region,’’ he said.

Caloundra Health Service’s Dove Palliative Care Unit will receive 10 new beds following the refurbishment of the facility after the Sunshine Coast University Hospital opens its doors. The news comes as the palliative unit last week celebrated its sixth anniversary. Nurse unit manager Clodagh Barwise-Smith said this would not be possible without the continued generosity from the Sunshine Coast community. She said the service was supported by the Caloundra Hospital Auxiliary, including Bardo’s Bazaar thrift shop. Bardo’s has committed $500,000 towards the new beds.
COMPASS INSTITUTE BIG WINNER AT BALL More than $51,000 was raised for the Compass Institute from the Coastline BMW Summer Racing Carnival Gala Ball recently. The funds raised at the charity ball will be used to set-up a cafe in Nambour, which will provide real-life training for students and participants. The Sunshine Coast Turf Club chief executive Mick Award winner Graham Rewald Sullivan said the association was proud to support another local charity from the gala. Dawson Jockey Club President Graham Rewald won the prestigious Service to Country Racing Award 2016. The event forms part of three days of celebrations including a golf day, raceday and the ball.

548 KILOS OF GRIEF FOR BABY TURTLES
A
disturbing 548 kilograms worth of rubbish was collected last weekend from the stretch of coastline running from Shelly Beach and north to Coolum. It’s a figure that has increased a shocking 174 per cent in 12 months. More than 350 environmental warriors joined forces to clean up 13 Sunshine Coast beaches in the lead-up to this month’s turtle hatching season. The event was hosted by SEA LIFE Mooloolaba in conjunction with Sunshine Coast TurtleCare, Reef Check Australia and Sunshine Coast Council to ensure the local populations of turtles are given the best chance of survival. As it is, only one in 10,000 hatchlings survive to adulthood. SEA LIFE Mooloolaba curator Aaron Sprowl says the clean-up is vital given how much rubbish was collected. “It’s a significant increase this year probably because of a number of reasons like the rain washing the debris down and maybe a busier tourist season,’’ he says. “It’s hard to say. “With turtle hatchlings due to appear throughout February, we cannot stress
enough the importance of putting rubbish in the bin and keeping waterways free of debris, as this increases the likelihood of floating syndrome, which is unfortunately a common injury caused by pollution.’’ Sprowl says plastic bags floating in the ocean are of particular concern as turtles mistake them for jellyfish, one of their primary food sources. “SEA LIFE Mooloolaba has cared for
more than 1,000 sick or injured turtles over more than 25 years, and during that time, one of the most common problems we have witnessed has been floating syndrome where a turtle is found stranded on the beach or at the surface of the water, causing serious health implications,’’ he adds. The aquarium opened its dedicated Turtle Hospital in 2014, with increased capacity to care for sick or injured
turtles as well as implement turtle health checks. Sunshine Coast Council conservation officer Kate Hofmeister says turtle hatchlings will emerge throughout the month, followed by an incubation period of between 60 and 70 days. “Volunteers from the Sunshine Coast TurtleCare group have been monitoring loggerhead turtles in the area for more than 10 years, and witnessed the first nesting turtle of the season lay her eggs in November,’’ she says. Anyone who comes across a turtle nest should stay away from the area. “If you come across a nest leave it alone,’’ Sprowl says. “If the hatchlings are emerging let them do their thing. “It’s very important that they cross that beach. It’s believed that it places a sort of imprinting on them.’’ If you see a turtle nest, contact turtlecare.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
If you see a turtle that is sick or injured contact the RSPCA’s Marine Animal Stranding Hotline on 1300 264 625.

ould the next Steve Jobs be right here on the Sunshine Coast? We’ll find out over the next few months, as youngsters across the Sunshine Coast put their thinking caps on and test their technological talents in the inaugural Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. The competition for school students in Grades 10 to 12 is now officially underway and plenty already have their eyes on much more than the $20,000 in prizes that are up for grabs. “I'm very excited for this program because I think it’s really important for kids to be involved in technology because it is an emerging industry and its really important for young people to know that there’s a lot of careers in this industry,” says Lili Scout from Mountain Creek State High School. “I really enjoy it because there are a lot of ways to be creative and innovative with technology and those are two things I love. In 2014 I was in the first Startup Weekend on the Sunshine Coast and I came with an ideas-sharing app for kids because I felt like especially as a young girl, my ideas weren’t being heard especially by adults,” she says.
While fellow Mountain Creek student Rhys Topham is also excited to explore his love for technology in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards, his big ideas are top secret. “Well if I told you that I’d be losing my idea!” Rhys says. “I love technology, its everywhere around us, social networking, everyone’s very dependant on their phones which are a great way of communication on many levels, entertainment that sort of thing.” The grassroots of our region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem certainly look strong. PROFILE
THE GOOD DOCTOR Science communicator Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will receive his first honorary doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast on February 26. He chats with My Weekly Preview about education in Australia and a mindbending technology called CRISPR. Words: Leigh Robshaw
I
f Dr Karl Kruszelnicki has a personal motto, it’s this: stick to the facts, avoid opinion. But there are some issues he doesn’t hesitate to weigh in on. One is education and the other is the state of science funding in Australia. Speaking to My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to his visit to the Coast to accept his first honorary doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast on February 26, he expresses bewilderment over the recent CSIRO announcement of cuts to its climate science division. “Galileo gets his telescope and he looks at Jupiter and he starts making a bunch of discoveries,” he says. “We didn’t say, now we know everything about astronomy. We’re just beginning to understand climate change, we should be putting more funding into it. It’s like saying hey, we’ve invented glass now, and we’ll stop doing any research into it. Research never stops. The problems are growing with climate change and we need to do more research into it. I don’t fully understand it.” He’s similarly dismayed at the state of the Australian education system and says not only should it be free, but we should change the way we teach children full-stop. “The word education comes from the Latin word that means ‘to lead’ and it means to lead out of a person what their own internal natural skill and talent is. Our education system is more of learn and regurgitate model. I’ll teach you two plus two equals four. Congratulations, you got the answer right. “The problem with education in Australia is that we’ve shifted. We used to think that education was a worthwhile investment in the future. Now we see education as a way for the government to make money from people and they have
to apply the laws of supply and demand, so there are bad schools and good schools, and then for some unknown reason, the government gives more money to private than public schools. I thought the whole thing about a private school was that it was private.” Kruszelnicki’s three children went to public schools and he says Australia should follow Scandinavia’s lead and offer everybody a free education, right up to university. He’s grateful for his 28 years of free education in Australia (15 of those years at university), which enabled him to rise from being the child of Polish holocaust survivors living in a refugee camp in Victoria, to Australia’s most recognisable science communicator, a Member of the Order of Australia, 2003 Australian Father of the Year and a National Living Treasure (2012). “I grew up in a refugee camp in
Australia. It was a bit better than the camps we have these days. Once every week we would have an egg given to us and I would eat the egg and my parents wouldn’t. My parents would give that to me rather than eat it themselves. We lived there for three years, in a little room the size of a tradie’s van.” From these humble beginnings, Kruszelnicki has gone on to become the author of 36 books and a much-loved TV and radio broadcaster famous for his infectious enthusiasm for science. He has degrees in astrophysics, maths, medicine, surgery and biomedical engineering and in 2002, won the Harvard University Ig Noble Prize for his explanation of why belly button lint is most often blue. Despite his swathe of academic qualifications and awards, he says he’s not very intelligent. “I’ve never been a great scientist,” he
says. “My skill is being able to recognise an interesting story and then pass that on to the public. I’ve been lucky enough to have 28 years of education for free, thanks to the Australian taxpayers. As a result of my education and my natural bent, I can recognise a good story and I can turn it into English for the average person. My IQ is 110, so I’m not very smart. I’m with the 66 per cent that are between 85 and 115; I’m in there just barely above average. If I’ve done anything, it’s being able to turn exciting but hard to understand concepts into easy to understand concepts.” When asked to predict the biggest advances in science over the next 20 years, he mentions the quandary of dark matter and dark energy (which make up more than 90 per cent of the universe and scientists are completely in the dark about) and emails me a 5000-word paper he’s written on immortality called Bioinformatics, Immortality and Fractals, for a little light bedtime reading. But he’s most excited about a new technology that sounds like it’s straight out a sci-fi film called CRISPR (clustered regularly-interspaced short palindromic repeats, pronounced ‘crisper’). “CRISPR is going to be really big,” he says. “It’s genetic editing technology. You can have a living dog, a tiny chihuahua, and if you apply CRISPR over a period of four months, you can turn that tiny dog into a rottweiler. Or you could have a child with cystic fibrosis and you could snip that out with CRISPR. “We are in the first position ever that we can control our evolution. It has no moral value, it just is. CRISPR will change genetics. What will we do with the increased population? What makes you think we’re going to live on Earth? We humans are turning into a space going race.”

SAVE UP TO 40% OFF QUEEN BEDS
NOW $899
Here’s Why... Bed retailer, Dial A Bed, is on a mission to break into 5 Star hotel businesses where movie stars stay. In order to do this they have designed a few beds especially for the movie stars. These beds will sell for thousands of dollars but you have an opportunity to own them before the movie stars test them out. There are latex, cool gel foam and exceptional pocket coil mattresses. Some of these beds will retail for over $7000. We are doing this to give an opportunity to the general public to own these great beds at ridiculously low prices. We also want to push our sales into overdrive this year, say one of the managers After all ...
Queen Latex Mattress

RRP $1499
Over the last 100 years, everyone has been raving about latex mattresses because of their extreme levels of comfort: relieving your body’s pressure points and improving circulation. When you lie on a good latex bed like this one, you will feel as if you have died and gone to heaven because it gives total support and hugs your body. What’s more, they are resilient, durable and have a natural ability to resist bacteria and dust mites. And the fact they have been known to last up to 30 years makes them an exceptional investment. 10 Year Warranty.
SAVE UP TO 40% OFF DOUBLE BEDS

Queen Mattress This white bed gives you the modern look. It would be great for any room in your house. The bed is brilliantly designed. It is ready to assemble. The bed is also available in King Single and Double.
How Can They Slash Their Prices By Up To 47%? According to Steve, the owner of Dial A Bed: “It’s all really quite simple. It is Valentine’s Day this Sunday and rather than spending thousands of dollars on the same old boring rings, flowers, beauty treatments, lingeries and romantic dinners, why not get yourselves a new bed. Live like a movie star and sleep like one too. You will save thousands of dollars on your new bed. “Sure it’s going to upset some of our competitors by offering these beds says the manager of the Capalaba store. “But it’s perfectly ethical. In fact, all we’re doing is ‘offering’ potential customers into our store so they can really understand the quality of our merchandise. MY BODY
Cindy’s little secret Will supermodel Cindy Crawford quit modelling when she turns 50 on February 20? That’s the latest goss, although she has denied the rumours on her Instagram page. She says it’s true she’d like to shift her focus and concentrate on her business, friends and family, but she keeps getting modelling offers she can’t refuse. (Don’t you hate that?) Crawford became one of the first ‘supermodels’ in the 1980s and 1990s. She looks amazing at nearly 50 and after more than 30 years in the modelling industry, she’s picked up plenty of beauty tips. Here’s how she stays looking great: • She uses her own skincare line Meaningful Beauty to take care of her face and décolletage. • To preserve her jawline, she does neck exercises every day. Lying on her back, she lifts her head an inch off the ground and lowers her chin to her chest. She does three reps of 10 each day. • She spends 20 minutes in an infrared sauna at least once a week, which she says helps her body to detox, as well as stimulating collagen production to prevent formation of wrinkles. • She dry brushes her skin before showering and afterwards applies Neutrogena Body Oil all over her body while still wet to let it soak in. Neutrogena Body Oil is a light sesame formula that instantly absorbs into the skin. It leaves skin feeling moisturised, soft, silky and radiant. It’s best used after a shower or bath while skin is damp, $12.99 from supermarkets and pharmacies.
WHICH BOB DO YOU WANT? The bob is the hottest hairstyle of the moment. Get the right bob by getting up to speed on bob terminology: Blunt bob: A bob where the hair is cut without layers, making the hair the same length from all angles. This cut works best on naturally straight hair. Good for making thin hair look thicker. Graduated bob: Longer layers at the front graduate to shorter layers at the back, becoming quite short at the occipital bone at the back of the head. Similar to a concave or inverted bob. Think Victoria Beckham. A-line bob: Slightly longer in the front than the back, a favourite of Gwyneth Paltrow. Asymmetrical bob: Longer on one side than the other, like the curly bob we saw Beyonce sporting last year. Lob: An abbreviation of ‘long bob’, it falls to somewhere near the collarbone. Fans include Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift and Dakota Johnson.

MY LIFE
FORGET THE DIET FADS AND EAT LIKE GRANDMA When we interviewed Dr Karl Kruszelnicki for our Profile section this week, we asked him how he fuels an impressive brain like his, while staying so enviably slim. He told us he stays away from diet fads and instead follows the common sense advice of US author, journalist and activist Michael Pollan, who has written eight books, including his New York Times bestseller, In Defense of Food. His three simple rules for eating are: “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Here are a few more of Pollan’s tips: 1. Don’t eat anything your great grandmother wouldn’t recognise. 2. Don’t eat anything with more than five ingredients, or ingredients you can’t pronounce. 3. Stay out of the middle of the supermarket; shop on the perimeter of the store. Real food tends to be on the outer edge of the store near the loading docks, where it can be replaced with fresh foods when it goes bad. 4. Don’t eat anything that won’t eventually rot. There are exceptions to this rule, such as honey, but back away from the Twisties. 5. It is not just what you eat but how you eat. Always leave the table a little hungry. 6. Enjoy meals with people you love. Eat with family or friends around the dinner table, not in front of the TV, and keep meal times regular. 7. Don’t buy food where you buy petrol. In the US, 20 per cent of food is eaten in the car.
IS YOUR JOB MAKING YOU FAT? The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed recently the top 10 industries with the most employees (male and female) found to be overweight or obese. Did your occupation make the list? 1. Mining 78.2 per cent. 2. Transport, postal and warehousing 74.8 per cent. 3. Wholesale trade 69.7 per cent. 4. Agriculture, forestry and fishing 69.3 per cent. 5. Public administration and safety 68.4 per cent. 6. Manufacturing 67.3 per cent. 7. Financial and insurance services 65.2 per cent. 8. Construction 64.5 per cent. 9. Electricity, gas, water and waste services 64.3 per cent. 10. Rental, hiring and real estate services 63.7 per cent.
INTROVERTS VS EXTROVERTS Lead a lifestyle that goes against your inherent nature and your health will inevitably suffer, writes Jodi Chapman.
D
oes your personality determine your stress levels? Introverts and extroverts draw their energy and deal with stress in two very different ways. Understanding who you are, and your needs, can make a significant difference to the state of your mental and physical health. Social isolation or feeling overwhelmed for long periods of your life are both very real causes of depression, anxiety, and unhappiness. Sometimes, inadvertently, we can make life decisions along the way that box us into a situation that does not suit our nature, and can be very costly to our health or to our relationships. Attempting to restore the balance can create upheaval, especially if yours, your partner’s or your children’s needs are not being met, creating further stress.
Extroverts are very social people, drawing energy from being around others. Their need for social interaction is very real, where introverts, though still happy to socialise, require time alone to reenergise, finding too much time with others overwhelming and exhausting. The introvert’s need to withdraw is very real. If you struggle with energy, feel unhappy or excessively stressed, consider your situation: is it congruent with who you are? Being aware could help balance the equation, support your stress hormones with a nutritious diet, as ongoing stress will deplete important nutrients, worsening the problem, and get plenty of sleep and rest. It will make a world of difference to your quality of life. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

Angkor Wat Temple, Cambodia

ROLLING IN THE DEEP SOUTH EAST Eight days of cycling through exotic lands in 40-degree heat is well worth the sore bum cheeks. By Abi Jackson
I
t takes mere seconds for the thick, gnarly clouds to tumble across the sky, smothering every inch of blue. The chalky red dirt track and flanking green paddy fields, which until moments ago had looked so vibrant they seemed unreal, are now bathed in an eerie gloom. The rain follows with equally dramatic
speed. I pedal on, reminding myself to savour the moment – while also keeping an extra careful eye out for potholes and darting dogs – until our guide Alistair yells: “Everybody stop here!” I’m grateful for the opportunity to rest. Five days into my eight-day ride with global cycling and trekking challenge specialists Discover Adventure, I’ve been
having an uncomfortable morning. Despite the padded shorts and chamois cream, blisters have sprouted under my bum cheeks and my legs are close to seizing up. Stiff and sore, I’m realising why the trip brochure warned this was going to feel like a challenge and may sometimes require us to ‘dig deep’.
That digging had begun on day one for some. As Alistair had said at the start: “It’s not the distance or terrain that makes this trip challenging, it’s the heat.” Our itinerary – starting in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City and finishing in Cambodia’s Angkor Wat – would take us on a 510-kilometre cycle ride over eight days. The trip is manageable for people of

moderate to decent fitness, though cycling experience massively helps. Throw 40 degrees Celsius heat and hours under a blazing sun into the mix and it’s largely pot luck how you’ll fare; heat exhaustion makes the first couple of days tough for some. Demand for adventure travel has boomed in recent years, with cycling trips becoming increasingly popular. It’s a trend that’s set to freewheel even further and Discover Adventure has seen a notable increase in appetite for trips in southeast Asia. In the four years this Ho Chi Minh to Angkor Wat itinerary’s been going, demand’s risen by around 50 per cent year on year, leading to an additional third date being added in late 2015. What’s the appeal? A quick survey of our group sums it up. Ranging in age from 22 to 67, we’re a right mix. For some, fundraising for charities close to their hearts is their main motivation, while for others, it’s simply a passion for cycling, a desire to push their limits a little and see a bit of the world in the process. As seasoned adventure-seeker Carole Fendick, 63, puts it: “Having a challenge on the horizon gives me a reason to keep training and keep it up in the gym.”
The fact we’re travelling in this part of the world gives our adventure an additional exotic twist – and cycling enables us to get up close and personal with the destination in a way that’s not usually possible. The itinerary also includes gaps for touristy stuff, including a morning boat ride through Vietnam’s Can Tho floating market where fish, fruit and even livestock are all traded on the water; the Cu Chi Tunnels where the Vietcong hid during the Vietnam War; the Tuol Sleng Museum in Phnom Penh – a former school used as a secret prison camp by the Khmer Rouge during the Pol Pot regime in the late 1970s which saw around two million Cambodians killed; and the Killing Fields, where much of the genocide took place. Although truly heartbreaking, these sites are important reminders of the horrors people went through. It’s on our bikes though, that we really get to see – and fall in love with – these enchanting countries. We pedal through bustling towns and tiny villages, bounce across bridges, weave through narrow streets and cruise along endless country roads surrounded by lush rice paddies and banana plantations. We marvel at colourfully-painted pagodas and a duck farmer guiding his
flock down a river, gasp as mopeds transporting entire families whizz by, and hours are spent chatting and sharing stories with fellow riders. Daily distances range from 30 to 90 kilometres, with regular stops to refill drink bottles and top up suncream. Staying properly hydrated and fed is crucial and provisions are plentiful; we snack on fruit, cake, crackers and crisps and – though I don’t touch the stuff back home – guzzle endless fizzy drinks, and tuck into bowls of rice and veg with meat or fish for lunch. Two other things play a key role in keeping those pedals turning: the group banter and the endless friendly smiles, waves and greetings from the locals. Discover Adventure partners with local operators to support the in-country trip logistics, sorting everything from the bikes, accommodation and meals. We’re also accompanied by a mini bus (which we travel in for some stints of the journey) and support vehicle. They’re passionate about promoting cycling in the region and giving back to the local community; bikes are donated to orphans once they get too old to be used on the challenges. Seven days into the trip, my skin is gross, I’m bloated from all the sports
Vegetable merchants at Mekong floating market drinks and I’ve worn nothing but grubby Lycra for a week – but I’ve also fallen head over heels in love with it all and can’t imagine returning to a routine that doesn’t start with a 6.30am wake-up call, involve seven hours on a bike and end with a beer and hobbly toddle to bed. To soften the blow, our final day is a real treat – a short ride, which includes some super fun jungle tracks and ends in the breathtakingly beautiful ancient temples of Angkor. * The writer was a guest of Discover Adventure. MY OPINION
DREAM BIG
WHITE RIBBONS AND HASHTAGS
Andrew Pitcher, a member of the Sunshine Coast Economic Futures Board and an influential member of the international financial services industry says by supporting local business, we’ll attract major investment to our region.
Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball questions why our society accepts some forms of violence and condemns others.
W
hite ribbons and selfies containing images of socially conscious messages written on hands punctuate our daily newsfeed at the moment. But are we so busy exercising our moral superiority and displaying outrage at the perpetrators – that we forget about the victim? That we almost don’t even need a victim – as long as we have a perpetrator? The victim is lost in the crowd’s cacophony of outrage and selfappeasement. Yes ladies and gentlemen, the lynch mob is alive and well, and it is as frightened of its very own deep proclivities and potential as it ever was. White ribbons and the like prevail upon us to believe it is self-evident the perpetrator’s unique class of violence is anathema to our way of life. Anyone who questions these little campaigns is ostracised (as a wife beater for example). But look closer, past the spin. We #keep your hands to yourself, or pin or post a white ribbon to say we are a lover, not a fighter. Duplicitously though, we (you, me and all the gang) allow the bombing of other people around the world, in our name. We permit, in our name, children to be detained in offshore ‘gulags’. Our nightly news displays regular horrors not the least bit connected with Jake the Muss. And we (yes, you and me again)
support a whole ‘entertainment’ industry where violence is the plot itself. Anyone see a problem? Just think for a minute about the level of violence that we do, or which is done in our name, daily. We are a society that is horribly violent. We are a society which places the truth in soft focus by diverting our attention to a couple of outliers; those guilty of particularly heinous acts committed against ‘our own’. In this context, the current focus on ‘unacceptable’ violence makes it implicit that other violence is acceptable. Indeed, we need it to be. Our virtual self-congratulatory lynch mob is the consequence of a society that is as confused as it is lacking self-awareness. The vilification of those who offend us by their uniquely offensive types of violence conveniently saves us from ourselves. Violence is the manifestation of frustration arising out of the inability to communicate. What is the difference between a government that drops bombs and a two-year-old throwing a tantrum? Until our children are taught that patience, empathy and compassion are fundamental tools to get along in society, violence will always be a tool utilised by those lacking understanding. Until then, cherry pick the bits of violence that your hearts desire, no amount of ribbons and lynch mobs will stop it.
W
hen looking at the Sunshine Coast economy I like to take an ‘outside-in’ view, comparing our region with others nationally and internationally. We all know this is a great place to live, raise a family and retire, but is it a great place to invest? While we have had periods of growth, our reputation as an investment destination has been tarnished by historic (fickle?) economic cycles. Business has a choice about where it invests and the competition for capital is hot. Ignore for a moment essential government infrastructure which tend to predominate in the media – hospitals, roads, rail (hopefully), airports and the like. The investment I want to spotlight is the local, national and international businesses that are choosing to make the Sunshine Coast home. The ones who are investing in productive assets, taking risks, injecting their own capital. I’m talking about folks buying new trucks for their transport business, the retailer buying more stock to expand, the commercial developer building office space or the tradesman offering more apprenticeships to expand. The medical professional investing in new technology, the family fitting out their new restaurant, the farmer buying more plant and equipment, the hotel chain investing in people and premises, or the national companies building retirement facilities. These businesses
employ us, train our families, support our friends, supply our neighbours. But how do we get people already here, or those outside looking in, to invest in the Sunshine Coast dream? Investors want a few things: a strong financial return over multiple years; confidence in all levels of government; an economic strategy that sets direction; certainty around planning parameters; knowledge that their products and services are making a difference in the community; an ‘open for business’ attitude; and finally, most want to participate with other like-minded businesses in a vibrant, forwardthinking investment climate. Are we there yet? Creating the conditions for investment I have described is the responsibility of everyone on the coast – the investors themselves, bankers, town planners, service providers and governments. But it is also up to us as individuals by supporting the ‘local guy’, by encouraging and celebrating the success of our business people and by removing self-interest from our decision making. We need sustainable employment, we need sensible investment and we need modern services for our ageing population base. To do this we need to help our business community achieve their dreams in order to fulfil our own. As my daughter reminds me each night at bedtime, ‘dream big, Daddy’.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
CRACKDOWN ON FINANCIAL ADVISERS Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
P
oor standards within some sections of the financial advice industry has provoked the government to usher in some big changes, that if implemented, will have a major impact on a significant number of financial advisers and the businesses that they work for. As the industry currently stands, almost anyone can call themselves a financial planner or adviser after completing a basic certificate or diploma level course to satisfy ASICs RG146. This level of education can be completed within a few months with a bit of effort. Following the financial systems inquiry and the parliamentary joint committee (PJC) inquiry into the
education and professional standards, the financial advice profession will change completely. From July 1, 2017 new entrants to the industry will require a relevant degree, sign up to a code of ethics, commit to undertaking continuing professional development, complete a national registration exam and finally complete a professional year of training. These requirements will need to be satisfied before they are able to call themselves a financial adviser or planner and being licenced to provide financial advice. Existing registered financial advisers will have until July 1, 2019 to meet the new requirements. Research undertaken by Deakin Prime suggests that 16,500 of the 22,000 financial advisers on ASIC’s financial advisers register will be noncompliant because they do not have a relevant degree. That’s 75 per cent that will need to get a degree or equivalent. This will obviously be a big ask for many existing advisers and there have
been submissions from some industry bodies to extend the deadline to make it feasible for working advisers to complete a tertiary degree or equivalent. ASIC has already created a register for financial advisers which, among other things, lists the adviser’s qualifications, experience and employment history, what product areas the adviser can provide advice about and whether the adviser is a member of any professional bodies or
industry associations that are relevant to providing financial services. You can access this information at ASIC’s Money Smart website by following this link: moneysmart.gov.au/ tools-and-resources/check-asic-lists/ check-a-financial-adviser. These changes will lead to much higher standards within the industry. It will lead to a greater barrier to entry through a much wider regulatory moat, the exit of some of the less ethical or unqualified players from the market and a more professional and trustworthy industry. It will certainly lead to Australians getting better financial advice. Which is a great thing for consumers and the long-term future of the industry. MAROOCHYDORE HOMEMAKER CENTRE PROMOTION
FLOORING MADE EASY Flooring is a big consideration when renovating or building a new home. For many people – especially those with young children – the thought of carpet sends a shiver of concern down their spine. After all, children can be messy little creatures with the spilling of food and their ability to track dirt through the house. It’s no wonder the word carpet makes people cringe. That’s all about to change with the SmartStrand Forever Clean range. It’s tough, durable and looks great. Visit Harvey Norman Flooring Maroochydore to find out more information and to browse the Smart Strand range.
The toughest, easiest to clean carpet on the planet Introducing the most advanced fibre innovation to date. SmartStrand Forever Clean carpets are beautiful and comfortable. SmartStrand Forever Clean is the first carpet to combine built-in stain protection with the Nanoloc spill protection for quick and easy clean ups. It also offers a full pet warranty, lifetime stain and soil protection warranty and extends this to rental property investors.
Put to the test To prove how easy this carpet is to clean, it was installed in Ricko the Rhino’s enclosure at the Birmingham Zoo for two weeks. After being professionally cleaned, the carpet looked as good as new.
Nanotechnology The best way to avoid stains altogether is to keep dirt and spills from settling into the carpet and thus becoming a stain. SmartStrand Forever Clean features Nanoloc, an advanced nanotechnology that creates a spill and soil barrier.
The next generation of sustainable carpet The carpet fibre, made with Bio-PDO, is produced from plant-based resources. This means 37 per cent of the SmartStrand Forever Clean is made from renewable resources instead of the more limited petroleum based ingredients in most other carpets. It is also made with polymers which are OEKO-TEX Certified free of harmful substances. STOCKISTS: Harvey Norman Flooring 5452 1500.

Make the most of what’s left of summer with this delicious recipe from Buderim Ginger. SUMMER PRAWNS • 250g peeled small green prawns with or without tails or six to 10 larger whole, raw prawns • 1 tbs Buderim Ginger Ginger Refresher • 2 spring onions, sliced on a diagonal including green tops • Zest and juice ½ lime • 1 tbs macadamia oil • 2 tbs torn coriander leaves • Red chilli, finely diced • Sichuan salt and pepper or fried shallots • Steamed snow or sugar peas, broccoli floret or asparagus spears 1. If using whole large prawn: remove shell from just above tail to just below head. Cut down back of prawn; de-vein, but leave orange roe, if desired. With scissors cut off legs and head just behind eyes or remove head and butterfly prawns. 2. Combine Ginger Refresher, onions, lime zest and juice and oil. Gently stir, cover and stand for at least 30 minutes. 3. Heat medium-sized frying pan until hot. Add prawns with marinade and fry over high heat, stirring gently for about one to five minutes, depending on size of prawns. Toss through coriander leaves and chilli.
New Function Packages Now Available 4. Serve immediately garnished with a sprinkling of Sichuan salt and pepper or fried shallots. Accompany with steamed sugar or snow peas, Chinese broccoli, broccolini or asparagus spears, cut diagonally.

the higher-spec models of the A1. That, in turn, puts a $13,000 gap between the cheapest and most expensive versions of the A1 (leaving aside the high-performance, all-wheel-drive S1 model launched last year). It means the baby of the Audi family appeals to a very wide demographic – from the money-conscious, socially-aware empty-nesters and young executives at one end to the upwardly-mobile, performance-oriented young urban couples at the other. There’s also a model in between – the petrol-powered, 1.4-litre TFSI (turbocharged four cylinder) that links these two variants. For the moment, at least, there’s no diesel powerplant available in the A1. Audi likes to refer to the A1 as delivering “luxury in a concentrate – a claim backed up by the impressive levels of specification and familiar Audi levels of quality finish. An entry-level price of $26,990 for the A1 1.0 TFSI – fitted with a six-speed manual transmission – doesn’t mean skimping on some of life’s little luxuries. A 6.5-inch colour display showcases the well-thought-out Audi Multi Media Interface cockpit management system – including Bluetooth audio streaming and continued page 40>

mong the most powerful tools available to car designers are the arts of camouflage and deception. The ability to make big cars feel small, and small cars feel big. Because when you get down to it, we love the size and security of big cars but don’t want them to feel cumbersome. We love the efficiency and agility of small cars, but don’t want them to feel flimsy and unsafe. German maker Audi seems to have
mastered these two dark arts. We recently tested their latest big car, the Q7 SUV, and were impressed by its nimble manners. At the very other end of the scale sits Audi’s baby city car, the A1 Sportback, which also tricked us into thinking it’s something that it’s not. Despite its compact size, the A1 boasts much of the sturdiness of a car with much grander pretences. The A1 has been a very successful
experiment for Audi since its release in 2010, with half a million units sold worldwide. A recent refresh across the A1 range has only served to enhance its big-car alter-ego. Actually, they’ve put a foot in both camps. The updated A1 offers a smaller, even more efficient one-litre, three-cylinder engine at the lowest end of the model scale, plus an impressively powerful, turbo-charged 1.8-litre four-cylinder in

MOTORING
<from page 38 voice command, driver information system. There’s also dusk-sensing headlights and automatic wipers. The big appeal of this base model, though, is the frugal thirst of its pint-sized powerplant. Modest outputs of 70 kilowatts and 160Nm convert to fairly modest performance – with the speed limit arriving in a leisurely 11 seconds. The payoff is that you’ll be an infrequent visitor to the fuel station with an average thirst of just 4.2L/100km. The seven-speed S-Tronic auto transmission, as well as adding $1350 to the price, also means a mild increase in the car’s thirst. More familiar to A1 buyers will be the proven 1.4-litre turbo engine – not quite $1000 more expensive than the threecylinder but delivering a substantial boost in performance with 92kW and 200Nm. It will reach the speed limit in under nine seconds while sipping just under five litres for every 100 kilometres travelled. At $27,750 it looks like the bargain of the litter and, as our test revealed, it’s a beautifully balanced blend of performance, efficiency and driveability. The performance hero is the 1.8-litre TFSI, whose 141kW give the A1 a serious edge. Its $39,990 pricetag brings with it a long list of added equipment, including
17-inch alloys, sporty S-Line trim, MMI with satellite navigation and 20GB hard drive, sports suspension, Xenon headlights plus LED running lamps. Our personal choice would be the model tested here, the mid-range 1.4 TFSI which impressed with its surprisingly spacious interior, high levels of finish and well-resolved dynamics. The little Sportback feels eminently sturdy on the road, soaks up bumps and road imperfections with little fuss and accelerates with surprising enthusiasm. Appearance-wise, this new A1 has undergone some modest but noticeable cosmetic tweaks – including wider, flatter headlights for a more feline look, a wrap-around hood and the option of contrasting paint colour on the roof dome. It all combines to give the updated
car a more sporty air. All three models utilise a stop-start system to save fuel, and all three, for the time being at least, drive exclusively through the front wheels. Only the flagship S1 enjoys Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheeldrive grip. Regardless, the A1 is a pleasure to steer – with accurate, direct turn-in and very predictable behaviour when changing direction or encountering bumps. The A1’s interior sets high standards for a car of this size. As we’ve come to expect from Audi, the instrument and centre-stack clusters are aesthetically pleasing and functionally simple and clever. Finish is first-class, from the elegantly contoured surfaces to the fine detail of the turbine-style air vents. And despite its limpet-like dimensions it still delivers acceptable interior space for front-seat and two full-sized rear-seat occupants. Cargo space measures 270 litres, meaning the split-fold rear seats need to be lowered to accommodate bulky items like golf clubs. This is, after all, a small car. And some things are impossible to camouflage, no matter how good your magic.
AUDI A1 SPORTBACK HOW BIG? Not very, as you’ll come to appreciate every time you go to park it of weave in and out of city traffic. But its clever design delivers a surprisingly spacious interior. HOW FAST? The 1.4-litre TFSI model tested here is swift enough for the average user. Those who want to race from the traffic lights might opt for the sportier 1.8-litre version that takes less than seven seconds to reach the speed limit. HOW THIRSTY? A new entry-level model boasts a super-frugal 1-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine that sips just 4.4L/100km. Our 1.4-litre test model can’t quite match that, but still manages a respectable 4.9L/100km. HOW MUCH? The refreshed A1 range starts at $26,900 plus onroads. However the $27, 750 mid-range model probably offers the sharpest value.

BUILDING RECORDS It’s been a busy few weeks in the property industry, but the one thing that has remained constant is the increase in confidence.
M
ore than 232,000 new homes were approved for construction throughout the country last year, according to statistics released last week. The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show the approval of new homes was up 13.7 per cent on 2014. The Housing Industry Association has celebrated the news, reporting that the 2015 new home building approvals are the highest on record. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett says while the expansion was not balanced across the market segments it was proof of an exceptional year. “While multi-unit approvals saw growth of 30.2 per cent, detached house approvals inched up by just one per cent
“New home building has been a crucial support to economic growth. . .”
over the year,’’ he says. “New home building has been a crucial support to economic growth over the past two years particularly in light of the mining investment downturn. “The challenge during 2016 will be (to) manage the transition to lower volumes of new home building in an orderly fashion.”
FOUR-YEAR HIGH FOR CONSTRUCTION The Sunshine Coast’s development industry is on fire with latest figures showing that the region recorded its highest construction for a December quarter since 2011. During the October to December 2015 quarter, combined with those of the previous quarter, registered an additional $114 million in construction value compared to the same six months of the previous year. A total of $336 million of building approvals were received and $234 million of new dwellings and new units were approved during the October to December 2015 quarter. Two major projects with reported construction values of at least $20 million included an aged care facility in Birtinya, with a construction value of
$22 million, and 22 units in Mooloolaba, with a construction value of $20 million. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the region’s 21 per cent increase in building approvals and 34 per cent increase in the construction value of new dwellings is good news for the future. “The significant growth in development on the Sunshine Coast over the first six months of 2015/16 is encouraging as ongoing development attracts investment opportunities and generates employment,’’ he says. THE COAST’S LATEST PROJECTS Kawana Health Precinct Projects complete include a 90 place child care centre; Best Western Hotel;

OFFSHORE: When conditions settle, Caloundra Six to Twelve Mile will return parrot, sweetlip and squire. Currimundi and Coolum have spotted mackerel, but they are moving around with the bait schools. You’ll get the better quality reef fish on the Barwon Banks using pillies, squid and plastics. Jigging plastics and metal jigs are proving a good alternative as the fish have plenty of bait to feed on, so plastics are proving productive.

FRESHWATER: Water levels are rising in all our local impoundments after recent rains. As the water is a bit cloudy, fluro colored lures are working best. Lake Macdonald is providing plenty of action with saratoga the fish of the week, while bass are also active. It’s the best time of the year for bass and golden perch at Somerset and Wivenhoe.
While last weekend’s southerly blast failed to live up to anything decent in our part of the world, a couple of low pressure systems are slated to gain in intensity just above NZ this week, which we hope will send us a few surfable morsels over the weekend. Quality will be mixed in the 1-3 foot range. The wind looks set to again limit our choices with moderate to fresh SSE/SE expected to blow throughout Saturday and Sunday. Try the usual protected spots of Alex to Maroochydore and Moffat to Currimundi. As always, stay casual and have fun.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Flathead are taking plastics and live whiting along the Twin Waters banks and down to the Maroochy Bar. There are plenty of whiting and tarwhine on the drift from Channel to Chambers Island using yabbies and cured worms. You can find trevally at the motorway bridge pylons using lures and pillies. A few blubber-lip bream are taking prawns from the riverbank off Duporth Ave, under the high rise apartment buildings. SURF: The wind and high seas have been the biggest handicap this week. There are bream and tarwhine on the top of the tide around the coffee rock at Mudjimba with fowl gut the ideal bait. Whiting can be found around the Maroochy Bar area, and worms are the preferred bait.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Razzle-dazzle rams are fired up and ready to go, as this week’s stars put a bounce in your step. Mars makes a magical connection with the North Node (on Monday and Tuesday) so seize the moment, follow your destiny and go on a grand adventure!
TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Your ruling planet Venus visits your career zone (from February 17 until March 12) so it’s the perfect time to spruce up your office, socialise and improve workplace relations. Tenacious Taureans will work hard to turn a short-term opportunity into a lucrative long-term success.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) With Venus visiting your adventure zone, plan to take a trip sometime in the next three weeks. Whether you travel near or far, make sure it’s somewhere special that you’ll really enjoy. And are your aspirations for the future as big and beautiful as you can possibly make them?
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) You have many talents but you must develop them with the help of a mentor. When will the teacher appear? When the student is ready! Your motto for the moment is from birthday great Anais Nin “Good things happen to those who hustle.”
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Peace planet Venus visits your relationship zone (from February 17 until March 12) which bodes well for all types of partnerships - whether of the platonic or intimate variety. Love and laughter are at the top of the menu as you romance and relax.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) It’s a wonderful week to beautify your living or work space but first you need to clean, tidy and de-clutter. So roll up your sleeves and get to it! Plus, with Venus moving through your wellbeing zone (from February 17 through until March 12) try to choose a diet and exercise plan.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Make space for creativity in your life between February 17 and March 12. Courtesy of Venus, it’s the perfect time to express your creative side or support the talents of others. As John Lennon declared “Creativity is a gift. It doesn’t come through if the air is cluttered.”
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) The magical universe hands you a golden opportunity this week, so don’t waste it. Mighty Mars (which is moving through your sign) forms a fortuitous link with the North Node, so you need to get off your Scorpio posterior and make a special hope, goal or dream come true.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) It’s time to get real. You know which tasks must be done promptly, and Saturn will help you complete them with gusto and grace. Plus, if you utilize the power of your imagination and are passionately proactive, then you’ll finally find a way to make your paying job your dream job!
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Venus stimulates your spending. But, if you over-extend yourself financially, then you’ll pay the price further down the track. So find ways to have fun and cheer yourself up that don’t involve shopping. And don’t let someone subtly undermine your Capricorn self-confidence.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) With Venus vamping through your sign (from February 17 until March 12) you’ll be at your bewitching best. So make the most of it. Attached Aquarians – aim to get the balance right between cosy coupledom and invigorating independence.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) With the sun, Mercury and Venus all visiting your solitude zone, aim for some peace and quiet this week. Find a place where you can contemplate your future. Activities like meditation and yoga suit. If you have questions, let your intuition be your guide.

THE LAST WORD
SILENCE IS GOLDEN Richard O’Leary ponders the human need to communicate anywhere and everywhere.
H
umans – we’re a funny bunch. We tell ourselves we just want peace and solitude and serenity, but when we find it we just want to tell everyone about it. It seems since we uttered our first words many thousands of years ago we have been striving to communicate more quickly, more effectively and more often. Sometimes I wish we would all just shut up. I went bushwalking with my eldest son over the weekend on the beautiful Mount Ngungun in the Glasshouse Mountains. We were greeted by a stand of scribbly gums with the distinctive markings which give the trees their name (a quick aside, the scribbles on the scribbly gum were the inspiration of May Gibbs much-loved books, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie).
But it wasn’t only the Ogmograptis scribula—the scribbly gum moth which had left its mark. Many human scribblers had also used nature’s billboard. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s the same reason children like to draw on walls. As we walked up the hill I started to forget about the real world and enjoyed just being in the moment with my son.
“Sometimes I wish we would all just shut up” Talking about stuff without interruptions and distractions. Looking at a red sac of sap which my seven-year-old at first thought was a valuable gem, and then decided was a snake’s egg, full of blood. Shortly after, I heard the first person talking on a mobile phone.
“It’s amazing up here!” You are halfway up the mount, your legs have started to ache a little, your breathing is heavy, but you feel great as you are surrounded by nature and life feels just as it should – so why do you answer that call? She wasn’t the only one, and really, it was no big deal. It didn’t detract from exploring the cave, having lunch on a rock and seeing my son climb to the highest point of the mountain and stand arms outstretched – the ruler of the world – his slight frame buffeted by the wind. I just think about these things. And then I go and write a story about people’s obsession with communicating at every opportunity – and I wonder is that any different to what that woman was doing on the hill. Is it just my way of saying, “It’s amazing up here!”? Humans – we’re a funny bunch. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
