OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

ometimes it’s hard to pinpoint why some politicians make a connection with voters and others don’t – but with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, I think it comes down to her ability to come across as one of us. She doesn’t always deliver the perfect ten-second grab for TV – and I think this works for her in an era where sound bites have become mechanical and predictable. At the recent sod turning for the new Maroochydore CBD, she worked the crowd effortlessly in what could be classified as enemy territory for a Labor Premier. But charm will only get you so far, and in the cover story this week, My Weekly Preview brings you an exclusive one-on-one interview with the Premier to find out what makes her tick – and just as importantly, what she has in store for the Sunshine Coast. Also in this issue, you get to meet the man behind the great Montville grape crush, take a trip to Italy, and find out why Aria pulled the pin on its $200 million development at Mooloolaba.

QUICK CHAT

MEASURING UP

USC engineering graduate Jordan Andrews of Mooloolaba is in the running to win a $100,000 prize for his award-winning rainfall measuring app. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

I flew to Melbourne last Friday and had five minutes to present my app to a panel of industry experts at Pause Fest. I’ll find out in a week if I was successful. I’m also looking for a full-time job and doing a diploma of project management. I just graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours).

About 16 years.

FAVOURITE PLACE? I do like the little dog park near Point Cartwright. It’s nice and quiet with lots of dogs on the beach. It’s a good little escape.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Probably graduating, I’d say. We have the ceremony coming up in April.

FIRST CAR? A Mazda 3. It was a little blue one. It got handed down from my mum to my sister to me. I loved it, it was the best car ever. It had a lot of character – the windows didn’t work, there was no air con and no radio.

FAVOURITE BOOK? Steve Waugh’s autobiography. I’m a big cricket fan.

FAVOURITE SONG? I don’t have a favourite song but my favourite artist is Porter Robinson.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Never give up, from my parents. I was talking about whether or not to stick with engineering.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

ONE THING YOU’D CHANGE ABOUT THE COAST? More opportunities for job seekers and professional work. Everyone’s always complaining about the lack of job opportunities. I’ve put in about 10 to 20 applications on the Sunshine Coast since graduating in December without success. I’m looking into moving, probably to Melbourne. I’d like to go into water engineering in general, flood engineering and if not, I’m also interested in civil works, road design and drainage.

Looking for the best fish on the coast? ***

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not taking advice to try harder in school. I went to Siena Catholic College. I wouldn’t say I was the best, but I wasn’t awful either. I just wasn’t sure what I was going to do with myself. I always loved engineering and I was good with numbers but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to commit to it. I liked journalism; that was my second preference. I kind of got talked out of journalism. They said engineering had a lot more job opportunities, but there’s been a bit of a decline in engineering.

When I’m with my family, my friends and my girlfriend. I guess just coming home at the end of the day and having dinner with them.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU? Not using my full potential, not succeeding. I guess I’ve got really high expectations so when I’m not reaching them it’s frustrating. I’m pretty hard on myself. I just try and do better next time and learn from it.

TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee, double shot latte.

NRL OR AFL? AFL and Richmond Tigers.

Open Wednesday, Friday & Saturday 8am till 3pm Open 2nd Friday of each month till 9pm

COVER STORY

STEADY AS SHE GOES

My Weekly Preview editor Richard O’Leary quizzed the Premier about the Sunshine Coast’s most pressing issues during her recent visit.

“I’ve made it very clear that I would govern as if I had a majority of 10 or 20. . . last year we had about 31 bills that we put through” Main image courtesy of New Creations Photography

J

ust over a year ago Annastacia Palaszczuk became the new Premier of Queensland after cobbling together a minority government with the help of the Sunshine Coast independent Peter Wellington, who backed Labor after securing a number of commitments – including the promise of an upgraded car park for the Nambour railway station. Palaszczuk was relatively unknown back then, with many people on the Sunshine Coast left to ask Anna who? But 13 months on and Labor is riding high in the polls and many attribute the government’s early success to the consultative approach of the Premier, which contrasts starkly with the style of her predecessor, who was unceremoniously dumped by the electorate after just one term. But critics claim the state government’s ‘steady as she goes’ approach has gone too far – and the ‘crash through or crash’ approach of Campbell Newman, has been replaced by caution at all costs. Last week the Premier visited the Sunshine Coast to turn the first sod on the region’s new CBD in Maroochydore and My Weekly Preview’s Richard 12 My Weekly Preview | February 19, 2016

12.indd 1

O’Leary was given an exclusive one-onone interview with the Premier. In the wide-ranging discussion, he asked her about the business community’s perception of the government, what she has planned for the region, and whether or not Labor can actually win a seat on the Sunshine Coast. You lead a minority government, which means you need to pick up seats in the next election to govern in your own right. Are there any seats on the Sunshine Coast you can win – or is that mission impossible? I believe there is an opportunity because there have been Labor seats here on the Sunshine Coast, in the past. What we [Labor] have to do is make sure we select the best candidates. I’ll be looking very closely at the next couple of years about who is in particular areas, who is working hard for their community, and I want people who are linked in with their communities. We’re never going to give up, and I believe the next election is a prime opportunity for us to demonstrate to the people of the Sunshine Coast we are delivering and we are committed to the Sunshine Coast and hopefully they’ll put their trust in us.

What are your plans for the Sunshine Coast for the next two years and beyond? We have a clear focus on jobs. I can see enormous potential on the Sunshine Coast. We know construction is up and building approvals are up, that the economy is growing extremely well, but now is the time to be making the most of it by liaising with overseas countries regarding investment. Seeing whether or not the Sunshine Coast Airport gets upgraded, that’s with the Coordinator-General at the moment. I understand that decision is going to be made in April, so fingers crossed. So what’s that going to do? It’s not only going to open up international routes for travellers and tourists, but it also opens up the markets for produce to be exported overseas. Are there any specific programs or projects for the Sunshine Coast? The Sunshine Coast hospital has to be number one. . . it’s all about health services for families. And I think too, when people are looking at moving regions, they look at what health facilities are like, what are the educational facilities like.

Maroochydore’s new CBD is underway, when will the state government relocate a government department to provide a perfect start to the new city centre? I can’t make those commitments but what I’ve invited the Mayor to do is to come down for our Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit that’s going to be held at the end of April. We’ve also had some discussions about any opportunity for bio-tech firms to be located here on the Sunshine Coast. I’ve also invited the Mayor to Bio 2016 (the world’s largest bio-technology convention and conference) in San Francisco with me in June, which is where you have all America’s big companies under the one roof and you can pitch your ideas. I’ll be there advocating for why people should be investing in Queensland and I’m more than happy to have the Mayor talking about why they should be located on the Sunshine Coast. But if you are putting in place that infrastructure [new Maroochydore CBD – SunCentral] that’s a great first step. The second great selling point is why would you not want to live by myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

The LNP promised to duplicate the rail line to the Sunshine Coast prior to the last election. I don’t think they did… it was with asset sales. Queenslanders voted very hard and clear about not wanting that to happen, and we respect the verdict of the people of the state. So we have to look at how we can do things differently, and do things smarter. So there are opportunities for private enterprise to put forward their market led proposals, and around 40 have been put forward. So there may be opportunities for the market, for private enterprise, to put forward their ideas. In relation to the rail duplication, we recognise that it is an important issue, the deputy premier in the next month or two will be launching an infrastructure plan, but what we need to do is make sure we have a very good business case that goes to the federal government – and where it gets listed by Infrastructure Australia. What’s the hardest part of leading a minority government? It’s not unusual for Queensland to have minority governments, we’ve had them in the past, that’s the first point I’d make. The second point is that I’ve made it very clear that I would govern as if I had a majority of 10 or 20. So we’ll put forward the best possible ideas to the Queensland public and they’ll be voted on in parliament. Last year we had about 31 bills that we put through and all our government bills went through, and there was one non-government bill that went through. What my government intends to do is be a government focussed on economic development, but also a government focussed on social issues and I think that’s going to be the hallmark of this government.

the beach, beautiful climate and beautiful people.

Mayor Mark Jamieson, SunCentral Maroochydore CEO John Knaggs and Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk turning the first sod on the new CBD We are prepared to tackle domestic violence, we are prepared to tackle alcohol fuelled violence and we are prepared to tackle issues to set up a National Disability Insurance Scheme, recognising that there are people who are less fortunate, are vulnerable across the state, and yes at times we need to extend a helping hand. Is being Premier of a minority government the toughest thing you have ever had to do? No, I don’t think so because it’s about delivering for Queenslanders. We went to the election with a very clear plan to grow the economy, to be responsible and be measured, restoring frontline services, having a clear focus on health and education and all the Ministers are getting on with the job of doing that. Is it tough? It was a lot tougher in opposition – there were just seven of us [laughter].

Were you surprised about how little you had to promise to get Peter Wellington’s vote? It’s about relationships and working with people and Peter Wellington is one of the most respected and admired politicians that I know. I’ve known Peter for many years. We went through a number of issues that were important to him, and a number of issues that were important to us, and I have a very good working relationship with Peter Wellington.

agriculture, innovation, development, securing infrastructure. So, just at the end of last year, there was about eight billion dollars’ worth of investment that came into Queensland in like a week. That was securing the pipeline from Tennant Creek to Mount Isa, we had QGC, another 1.5 billion dollars in terms of expanding into Charlie gas fields and the big Rio Tinto announcement up in the Cape, billions of dollars. What we do know, our exports are going up.

Some say Campbell Newman’s government failed because it tried to do too much in too short a time frame, local business leaders tell me you may fail because you are doing too little – is that a far cop considering your government’s ‘steady as she goes’ approach in the first year or so of government? No, because a lot has been happening. We have been very conscious about diversifying the economy. So what happened was the former government slowed the economy right down. It made harsh decisions which impacted on people’s lives. So when you do massive job cuts, and massive cuts to service delivery it has a huge impact. So what people do is they leave their homes and move to where the jobs are. It also means they take their kids out of schools. The flow on effects are the class sizes and you lose a teacher. The people who used to put their dry cleaning in or go and get a coffee don’t and that flows through to retail. It has a massive impact. They did not take the community with them. I do have a consultative approach and I make no excuses for that because it’s about making people understand what we stand for and why we’re making those decisions. What I’ve been very consciously doing over the last year is looking at the opportunities of where we can grow the Queensland economy: tourism,

I assume the Member for Fairfax Clive Palmer hasn’t helped that strategy considering what’s happened at his Townsville nickel mine in recent weeks… “Very disappointing. In terms of lack of communication with those communities. In talking to the workforce, I went up there and spoke with the workers and their families directly, and what they told me is they’ve lost out on about 18 years of entitlements. So we’re actually working with those families to look at other opportunities and jobs they can go into.

I’ll end with a couple of personal questions. Do you have any connections to the Coast? Lots of holidays in the past on the Sunshine Coast. At the start of the year I stayed at Noosa and Sunshine Beach, a beautiful part of Queensland – holidaying at home. I also have a little investment townhouse at Sunrise Beach. So happy to invest on the Sunshine Coast. And finally, when I say Sunshine Coast – what do you automatically think of? I think of the people. I think of the beautiful environment, safe swimming beaches, pristine walking tracks, great food, excellent coffee, and everybody smiling and being happy and why wouldn’t you be, living on the Sunshine Coast?

REVIEW

THEN THERE WERE TWO Two companies have been invited to tender for the Brisbane Road car park redevelopment at Mooloolaba following the completion of an Expression of Interest process – Abacus Investments and Jesob Group are the shortlisted applicants. The current site provides 176 car parks – the new site is expected to accommodate a minimum of 500 public car spaces exclusive of any onsite generated parking requirements. The council is expected to make a decision on awarding the tender by mid-2016.

Athletes from Australia, the USA, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and Great Britain hit the water at Mooloolaba last weekend for the Australia Open Water Championships. Kawana Waters swimmer Chelsea Gubecka, 17, took out the 10-kilometre open Chelsea Gubecka water women’s title and placed second in the five-kilometre race behind The Southport School’s Kiah Melverton, 19. The 10-kilometre men’s title was secured by American Jordan Wilimovsky, 21, while the five-kilometre race was won by the UK’s Jack Burnell, 22, who also placed second in the 10-kilometre final.

BROUGH BOWS OUT Member for Fisher Mal Brough officially resigned as a Federal Minister on Saturday. The announcement follows Brough’s decision to stand down from the ministry in December following his involvement in the controversial Peter Slipper and James Ashby affair. “I have made this decision after speaking to the Australian Federal Police this week where they confirmed that their enquiries may take several more months”,’’ he said in a statement. “I take the view that politics is not about an individual or a career, it is what is in the best interests of the country.’’ He resigned ahead of Malcolm Turnbull’s major cabinet reshuffle.

NO DELAY ANNOUNCED

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kevin Hegarty this week said that no decision had been made to delay the opening of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital despite claims progress had been stalled. Hegarty said recruitment of additional staff had already begun and it included the highest ever intake of medical interns. “The focus of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) is on opening the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a way that ensures patient safety and clinical services are of the highest standards. As far as the building of the hospital, as anyone observing it can see, it is very advanced with only one of the 10 cranes remaining on site.’’

LOCAL NEWS

NEW CBD CONSTRUCTION KICKS OFF

T

he transformation of the old Horton Park Golf Club course into the region’s news CBD has officially begun, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk turning the first sod on the project. The 53-hectare SunCentral Maroochydore development site is forecast to create more than 30,000 permanent jobs in the region. Premier Palaszczuk says by 2040 the new CBD will provide a $5.9 billion boost to the Queensland economy over its 20-year life. “This unique development is vital for a region coming of age. The Sunshine Coast is already the second highest performing regional economy in Queensland and the fifth highest nationally,” she says. “With the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital due for completion at the end of this year, along with the planned expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport, the new city centre at Maroochydore will ensure we are rising to the challenge of continued growth.” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says when finished, the site

will include commercial buildings, destination retail outlets, a premium hotel, and an exhibition, convention and entertainment centre, with 40 per cent of the new city centre site dedicated to waterways and parkland. “This is Australia’s only greenfield CBD within an existing urban area, which provides us with the opportunity to build from scratch, a city centre that is able to meet the needs of people both

now and in the future.” “Applying our smart city framework – which includes digital solutions for the management of street lighting, car parking, water, power and signage that is detected by smartphones and other technologies, and where rubbish bins are emptied via automated underground tubes, means SunCentral Maroochydore will become a nation-leading destination for innovative businesses.”

between two slices of flat bread. And for an additional two euros you could get unlimited cups of white wine. No wonder the queue never disappeared! We gobbled our sandwiches while perched on stools set on the pavement and enjoyed every delicious mouthful. Certainly no visit to Florence would be complete without a taste of these remarkable concoctions. It became one of our best memories of Florence, one of Italy’s many medieval cities. The architecture of the old city is graceful, its spotless cobblestone streets (yes, spotless, including the laneways) inviting you to wander at will. It was the high season, but there was never a sense of being crowded, and the people welcome the visitors. It is a charming city with charming people. The Tuscan countryside offers tranquil vistas of olive groves, cypress trees and vineyards set in gently rolling hills. It seems the perfect setting for the many medieval cities that dot the landscape. The flea market in the carpark is a good place to pick up souvenirs, such as key chains and copies of Venetian masks, at very reasonable prices. It’s also a lot cheaper than Venice, for instance.

rom the window of our apartment in the old city of Florence, I could see the queue in the laneway across the square begin to form at 9.30 in the morning. It remained till midnight, a snaking line of young people waiting patiently, while others perched on the pavement on either side. Curiosity revealed a hole-in-the-wall

sandwich shop that sold nothing but pork sandwiches. But these were no ordinary pork sandwiches. For the princely sum of seven euros you could choose from a wide variety of fillings, from lettuce to truffle cream, and pork every way you could imagine, smoked, cured, roasted, as well as daily specials, such as wild boar, all packed

Riomaggiore fisherman village San Gimingnano, in the heart of the area that produces wines such as Chianti and Barolo, is built high on a hill and offers great views of the Elsa Valley from a high parapet. Here we sampled what we were assured was the best gelato in the world. Many say Sienna is Italy’s loveliest medieval city. It is famous for the huge square called the Il Campo where the famous horse race, the Palio, is run. Thousands pack the square to watch the race each northern summer. The Duomo is breathtaking and built on a grand scale, with its ancient stained glass windows and ornate altars. From Florence, some of Tuscany’s most famous cities and sights are within easy reach by coach and train. Italy’s trains deserve special mention. They are fast, clean and luxurious.

Does Your Immune System Often Crash? Stuck in bed for days or weeks after a stressful time? Always Getting Colds and Flu? VENICE

CINQUE TERRE Cinque Terre’s beauty rests in its five hilly towns - Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. With cobblestone streets and quaint houses clinging to the hillsides overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean sea, it feels like you’ve stepped into the past. Many of the buildings that front the main street cater to the tourists, mainly cafes and boutiques, but look out for the little shops selling a wide variety of local produce, such as herbs, pastas, oils, local liqueurs, soaps and more. The view of the sea is idyllic. The countryside is spectacular and available to anyone who wants to hike the area. There is a coastal walk with stunning views but sections are closed and it is best to check.

Venice was everything it’s cracked up to be, uniquely built over water. It is almost surreal being there after having seen so much of it in movies and read so much about it as settings for all kinds of stories. Riding the vaparettos was an adventure, and many paid for the pleasure of a ride on a gondola. But with the high season beginning in April and running till the end of October, huge crowds are the norm. It is impossible to walk a straight line in the narrow streets, as one is forced to dodge the many wandering visitors. The little lanes off the main square of San Marco hold curio shops selling leather and Murano glass jewellery. Quaint little cafes lead out to hidden courtyards; we had staff from several competing for our business and offering discounts. Our choice served up a delicious meal in a quiet courtyard garden, with locals passing though after picking up children from school. The Rialto bridge looks more impressive from the water than when you are on it. The fish market is huge, reminiscent of the wet markets common in Asia, but get there before two, else you will only see empty counters. * The writer travelled independently.

Have you ever wondered why some people suffer with an immune crash right after intense exercising or high work load without enough downtime? Whether it’s a cold or flu that sets in, virus, or adrenal fatigue, it could result in a week or two in bed recovering. During ongoing stress, hormones such as cortisol and adrenalin are produced in high quantities helping you keep up with the extra demands on your body for the short term. When the time comes to rest, the adrenalin stops pumping, which has an effect on your overall hormonal balance, causing the stress hormone cortisol to also drop. For those who suffer with a relatively low immune system, which you may not notice until this time, the adrenal fatigue triggers an acute response, rendering you susceptible to infection.

Approximately 90% of our population carry a toxin producing bacteria contracted through travel, or contact with others, which has a substantial impact on your immune system, and recovery from stress. These bacteria are the cause of your poor immune response during times of stress, as they have a negative effect on the levels of immune boosting beneficial bacteria in your gut. These bacteria produce D-lactic acid, in quantities that far outweigh the level of lactic acid that should be circulating in your system. Your body naturally produces L-lactic acid through exercise, for brain function, and for energy production. We have an enzyme that can break down the L-lactic acid once it is not needed, though we don’t have an enzyme to break down D-lactic acid formed by these bacteria. High levels of D-lactic acid produced are not removed, leading to colds and flu, pain and muscle tension, fibromyalgia, fatigue, and mental health symptoms such as fogginess, insomnia, depression, anxiety, heart palpitations, and nervous system problems. Focus on your immune system through times of stress, developing a strong defence against adrenal fatigue will help. Recovery can take a few months, though the positive effects are noticed within 2 weeks. If you feel you may be suffering with this type of immune imbalance, consider getting help. It will only continue to cause gut depletion of nutrients and further immune reduction over time, affecting energy production and your mental state as you age, for life. PROFILE

EAT, DRINK, STOMP The grapevine has worked its magic – 500 people are salivating at the thought of stomping on 1000 kilos of grapes at Montville’s annual Flame Hill Grape Stomp next week, putting the Sunshine Coast hinterland into the national spotlight. Words: Leigh Robshaw

T

here’s something about taking your shoes off and stomping around in a big barrel of grapes that turns grown men and women into giggling kids. It’s messy, it’s fun and it harks back to the days of old when things were done by hand – or foot. Tony Thompson says there’s nothing like Flame Hill’s annual Grape Stomp anywhere in Australia. Held annually at the Montville vineyard, it marks the completion of a successful harvest and brings attention to the Coast’s burgeoning reputation as a foodie destination. “This year has been a textbook vintage,” Thompson says. “We’ve still got a lot of grapes to pick. We’ve picked the verdelho here and the white muscat at my other vineyard. We’ve still got several varieties to pick, including the Montville shiraz.” Held during a one-month window between February and March when the grapes are harvested, the Grape Stomp now attracts national attention. “We had the Today Show up here and you could see the reporter’s whole persona change when she got to take her boots off and stomp a barrel of grapes,” says Thompson. “She went back to being a little girl. You can just see how people go from being commercial to being natural and joyful about what they’re doing. It just captivates people.” Now in its seventh year, the event attracts up to 500 people from here and interstate – accommodation across the Blackall Range books out for the weekend. Jazz bands entertain guests, who enjoy fine food and wine and savour stunning views during the day, and when 5pm rolls around, people roll up their pants and get stuck into stomping 1000 kilos of grapes. “By that time most people have a bit of juice in them,” Thompson says. “It

Tony Thompson inspects the fruits of his labour with his trusty cattle dog, Bill certainly takes them back to the basics. Everyone seems to be pretty keen to get involved in the stomping of the grapes and experiencing the feeling of the grapes on their toes and feet. “It’s pretty hard work. About half a dozen people can get into one of the fruit bins at any one time. You jump on the grapes and they’re well and truly up around your thighs. To get your legs back out and jump up and down it would be like trying to walk in mud that was thigh deep. They really do love it.” Thompson purchased the Montville property in mid-2008 and created Flame Hill in December of that year, realising a long-held dream to create a business based on vertical integration – a concept whereby the supply chain of a company is owned by the company. Flame Hill’s restaurant serves burgers made with beef cattle raised on Flame Hill’s farm and the majority of the food served in the restaurant is grown on the property.

“Basically what we are is a farmers market with a bolt-on winery and restaurant,” Thompson says. “It’s extremely important to me that Flame Hill is authentic and that it’s sustainable. How many descriptors do you see out there like paddock-to-plate, local, regional, organic, handmade, kitchen made? In most cases, the person who writes that on a blackboard, they wouldn’t have a clue where that came from. They’re just accepting somebody’s word for it.” Thompson’s passion for local produce has turned him into an advocate for the Sunshine Coast hinterland. “The Sunshine Coast hinterland is potentially the uncut diamond of Australian tourism,” he says. “It’s a magnificent part of the world. It’s got fantastic visual arts, musicians, wine, food. You roll all those factors together and it’s damn hard to beat. For a lot of folks along the coast strip, it’s easy to take

what’s in your backyard for granted. “I think what’s really lacking is support and funding; money spent at all levels of government. I don’t think they contribute anywhere near enough [to the hinterland]. Thompson grew up in Texas, a small Queensland town two kilometres from the border of New South Wales. His dad was in the timber industry and most of his family were rural producers. He developed a soft spot for the Sunshine Coast when his family visited for summer holidays, and settled here to begin building his dream property at Flame Hill, where he lives with his cattle dog, Bill. “The cattle dog is my only family – my accountant told me I could not afford a winery and a wife,” he jokes. “I think a turning point for me was when I was younger I got thrown in the deep end running a couple of wine clubs. One was a Beefsteak and Burgundy Club. I was wine master and food master for a number of years. I quickly learned I had a people’s palate – meaning if I like something, a lot of other people will like it too. There’s a lot of pressure in making a wine you’re going to sell to other people.” Thompson would like to see more Queenslanders indulge in the pleasure of wine and food matching, saying it’s the ultimate epicurean experience. “Part of the lustre of life is to have a nice evening meal and an appropriate glass of wine with it. I think Queensland is a bit of a cultural backwater. It’s a much bigger thing in the southern cities, like Sydney and Melbourne, but it’s catching on slowly in this state. There’s some fantastic wine makers and wineries in this state. It would be wonderful to see people be as parochial about our state’s food and wine as they are about the rugby league.” The Grape Stomp is on Saturday February 27.

MY OPINION

WHY SO SHY?

THE MONSTER MASH

Is fear of becoming a public punching bag preventing good candidates from nominating to run for council?

Sami Muirhead says the cure for the menace of multitasking is wine and a colouring in book.

I

stumbled across a new buzzword on the web this week that made me stop and think. It is ‘mashing’. It does not refer to cooking dinner, to any form of astonishingly catchy Wiggles song that involves mashed potato, or mashed banana. It refers to our ability to never stop doing more than one thing at a time. Mums are the masters of mashing. The lady behind the word is Jackie Lewis who has a new book out called the Mothers Mind Cleanse, a guide for the modern mother. The book sounds wonderful in theory and encourages meditation and banishing being so busy. Look. Dear reader, I am not going to hoodwink you. I have not read the damn book because I am too busy wrangling my tribe of toddling terrorists and trying to appear coherent at work and attempting to keep our household running. I found moths in the cupboard last week. The food cupboard. Yep, moths people. So you see I am not really succeeding at very much at all most days except keeping everyone alive (including the moths). So this clever author who clearly stopped mashing long enough to write a whole book says we are all guilty of multitasking and we commonly have a parental type of ADD that results in us basically missing out on living in the moment. The concept of mashing certainty hit a chord with me. When you think about it, we drive while doing mental checklists or make phone calls while we are doing the dishes, we watch

TV while eating dinner and checking our Facebook and Instagram accounts, and we bath the kids while trying to pay a bill on the computer. Mashing. Mashing. Mashing. We are not really engaging in anything we do. It all sounds rather exhausting and makes me want to mash up a cocktail or two and just sit in a chair, and well, sit. I am not alone. A survey of mums in the United Kingdom showed two-thirds of them spend nearly every waking hour multitasking. Every waking hour. The other third are big fat liars. It is the rise of the superhuman mums. According to the survey the biggest multitaskers are mums aged between 35 and 44 with three children. I bet every one of those mums has moths in her pantry too. Heck, they probably have rats the size of cocker spaniels. And it’s not just mums who find it hard to focus on one thing at a time anymore. Blokes also juggle doing three to four things at any given time. Our chaotic worlds explain the boom in those amazing mindfulness colouring in books. Those beautiful books force you to sit still and just colour in. Those books are therapy in a binder I am telling you. Add a glass of wine and you have solved the problems of the world and calmed your mind. Add two glasses of wine and you have world peace.

ouncil elections are upon us once more. Doesn’t time fly? Interestingly, there aren’t too many signs on the ground (pardon the pun) of this vitally important democratic process getting into full swing. I’ve heard of less is more, but I’m not sure that’s a good thing when it comes to running Australia’s fifth biggest region. Taking the cynical view (which of course is not in my nature), is it that residents here simply don’t have any interest in putting themselves up for the thankless task of being a councillor? Even though they might have something genuinely worthwhile to offer, are they reluctant to enter the race because they don’t want the prize? Perhaps we’ve observed the local media portray such a negative picture of the council’s decisions, actions and achievements over years past that we just don’t want to be the next punching bag to cop a hiding. Aside from the disappointing number of new candidates on the Coast, we have to choose from, the platform of these would-be councillors is interesting too. Is it me, or does it seem odd that many of our divisions, including the mayor’s job, are being coveted by the Greens Party? Last time I looked, council elections in regional Queensland are free of party politics. I’m not even sure the Greens Party has any policies that relate to local issues. Apart from that, they’re taking on a council that has performed admirably in the environment space. The Jamieson led council has acquired significant land holdings for conservation and remains

focussed on installing renewable energy infrastructure. It also supports high value clean-tech enterprises in its economic development plan. Maybe it’s just a branding exercise for the state election. Lack of interest in the mayor’s job has happened here many times before. Historically, two-horse races and mayors elected unopposed aren’t uncommon, and here we go again. At a divisional level, we are at least seeing some candidates with experience in life and business but nowhere near enough. In the seats where long-time incumbents cling on to their precious jobs for dear life, the task of winning a voter majority is incredibly hard at best. They’ve had years to shore up their support, and they do. In contrast, the one and only seat being vacated by a sitting councillor is Mooloolaba’s Division 4. This has attracted a rich field of contenders, some with enviable qualifications. Here, a well-promoted, worldly and credible candidate has a real opportunity to come in and make a difference. Let’s hope the voters in this division take their responsibility seriously. In the US, political turnover is mandatory as the President can serve a maximum of two terms. With today’s rapid pace of change, perhaps this makes good sense.

unshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has told voters this is “no time for change” at his official campaign launch ahead of the local government elections. Speaking ahead of his major campaign fundraiser at The Events Centre Caloundra, the mayor outlined a multipronged platform centred on a stronger economy, a vibrant community and a healthy environment. “I see myself as a mayor running on to the ball, not standing still and waiting for something to happen, and post March 19, I’ll be picking up the pace. “It’s a very competitive world and if you sit back and think things will happen… they won’t.” “I’m going to do that under a banner of real leadership because I think that’s what has defined my term as mayor.” “This area has I believe not been represented to best effect across all levels of government in the past. “We’re the tenth biggest region in population in the country. By dint of that we’d be the tenth biggest taxpayers in the country. We’re not the tenth biggest recipient of government expenditure. “We’re a rapidly growing area and

council will never be able to fund the infrastructure development this region needs if all we’ve got to rely on is rates plus CPI – we have to be far more adventurous than that.” Jamieson identified three projects as his top priorities for his next term: delivering the expansion of the airport by 2020; delivering a protection zone for a broadband, sub-sea cable to the Coast; and securing a developer for a premium hotel in the new Maroochydore CBD. The Greens candidate for mayor, Tony Gibson, has criticised Mayor Jamieson for being too focused on the economy at the expense of the environment.

Natalia Vodianova’s p5 top

Russian model Natalia Vodianova, 33, is known for her Cinderella story, going from selling fruit on the street in her native Nizhny Novgorod to scaling the heights of the fashion world. To keep her skin glowing she uses Guerlain’s Super Aqua day and Super Aqua night creams. She also loves Fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask. The mother of four has said: “It’s really boring. I’m a mother. I don’t have time for these things. The fact that the mask is overnight is just a genius process. I pile it on and go to bed and that’s it. I don’t have to think about it.” Her favourite makeup products are Charlotte Tilbury’s Colour Chameleon eyeshadow pencil in Champagne Diamonds, which is created to bring the colour out in blue eyes and add a golden shimmer. She also loves Eyeko brow gel and carries Fresh tinted lip moisturiser in Sugar Petal in her handbag.

PRETTY COOL: ROSE QUARTZ HAIR The coolest new hair colour for girls who dare to be different is inspired by the Pantone colour of the year for 2016: rose quartz. The pale pink shade can be worn as soft ombré highlights at the ends of the hair or as a block colour on the whole head. Pastel pink hair is an edgy trend that suits everyone – there’s a shade to suit all skin tones and its a fun, youthful look. It may seem a bit out there, but life’s too short to have boring hair, right?

DON’T CRASH OUT IN YOUR MAKEUP Big night out and can’t be bothered going through your nightly cleanse-tone-moisturise routine? These babies are your saviour. Formula 10.0.6 Wipe Your Face Off Make-Up Removing Facial Wipes are cleansing wipes that remove makeup, including mascara and lipstick in three seconds flat. Formulated with pink grapefruit, apple, chamomile and aloe vera, the wipes exfoliate and cleanse pores, $6.99 from Target, Priceline and Big W.

Lipstick fit for a princess

Move over Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte is stepping up to the role of fashion icon, with Marc Jacobs making the nine-month-old his make-up muse. As part of the Le Marc lip creme collection, Marc Jacobs has named and created a lipstick shade after the princess, inspired by “the deepest saturated pink tones of an English Rose”. The lippy, Charlotte, is exclusive to the iconic London Harrods store. For a close match that’s about half the price, try the Body Shop’s Colour Crush Lipstick in Raspberry in Love (pictured). A long-lasting creamy lipstick with a subtle rose scent, it’s 100 per cent cruelty-free and vegetarian, $21.95 from The Body Shop, Sunshine Plaza.

MY LIFE

A DAILY DOSE OF GINGER Ginger packs a punch for flavour, aroma and health benefits, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.

T

here are so many reasons to incorporate ginger into our everyday eating patterns. Not only does it bring a distinct aroma and flavour to our food, it has many health benefits. Here are 10 you simply need to know: 1. Aids digestion. By increasing digestive fluids and saliva, ginger helps to increase the stomach’s gastric motility. 2. Assists with inflammation. Ginger contains anti-inflammatory properties which can help relieve symptoms of arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatism. 3. Calms nausea. Ginger helps to calm motion sickness, prevent morning sickness and is also recommended to those experiencing chemotherapyinduced nausea. 4. Assists in the repercussions of diabetes. Ginger is naturally low in GI and helps to assist in the implications of diabetes by reducing levels of serum glucose and maintaining blood sugar levels. It also

helps to lower blood pressure. 5. In traditional Chinese medicine, herbs and spices that contain high levels of phytochemicals such as ginger are used as a preventative for Alzheimer’s disease. 6. Antihistamine and decongestant. Ginger helps to decongest cold and flu-like symptoms while relieving headaches and sore throats. 7. Assists in weight loss. Ginger can act as a fat burner by maintaining satiety. 8. Treats heartburn. Ginger inhibits acid reflux, helping to soothe of heartburn. 9. Improves nutrient absorption. Ginger helps to activate the enzymes in the body that assimilate nutrient absorption. 10. Due to ginger’s ability aid in digestion, it also alleviates the symptoms of flatulence.

DOLLAR FOR DOLLAR Troy Davey is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

T

he range for the Australian dollar in 2015 was one of the smallest we’ve seen in recent years, but continues the pattern of lower highs and lower lows observed over the past three years. For 2016, I predict the Australian dollar biased lower in the first half as the result of commodity price weakness and US Federal Reserve monetary policy tightening. I then expect it will find some support in the latter half of the year as the terms of trade trough and the economy continues to rotate away from mining-related activity. This highlights a developing theme for the Australian dollar in the year ahead; that the terms of trade holds less

sway over the currency. The terms of trade have dropped significantly; a clear drag on GDP and the currency. But for 2016, I have a shallow forecast profile for the terms of trade, largely because I expect prices for Australia’s major commodity exports will be range bound in the near term. Other factors which usually drive movement in the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar are expected to be largely similar to 2015. The spread between Australian and US short-term interest rates should narrow (albeit driven by the US Federal Reserve tightening rather than the Reserve Bank of Australia easing). The slower pace of Chinese economic growth will also continue, but the growth rate is likely to converge around 6.5 per cent in 2016. However, these dynamics are broadly similar to those of recent years and so add little to the discussion around the outlook for the Australian dollar versus the greenback. I expect the currency will mark its cyclical trough in 2016 for three reasons.

Firstly, the RBA has completed its easing cycle. Secondly, the majority of commodity price declines have occurred. Thirdly, slowing Chinese growth will continue, but will be modest in magnitude. A bullish case could see the AUD/ USD above US$0.75 on the back of a positive surprise to the domestic economic outlook, a stronger Chinese growth outcome or strong rebound in commodity prices, and the impact of capital inflow from central bank balance sheet expansions.

A bearish case could see the AUD/ USD below US$0.65 on the back of a significant shock to Chinese growth or commodity prices, supply-side constraints forcing the US Fed into a more aggressive tightening cycle, and intensification of the emerging market debt deleveraging cycle. INVESTOR JITTERS BENEFIT MARKET OPERATOR PASSION IMAGES / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Higher trading activity by nervous investors and billion dollar capital raisings by the major banks have helped boost profit for the Australian Securities Exchange. An average of $4.1 billion was traded per day with the ASX over the six months to December 31, an increase of almost 17 per cent on the same period a year earlier. Higher revenue in two of the company’s three remaining market-

related businesses also contributed to half year profit growth of seven per cent to $213 million. “Volatility does help trading volumes, and volatility kicked up in the middle of last year,” says ASX chief executive Elmer Funke Kupper. The VIX index, an official measure of market volatility, typically moves above a reading of 15 in times of investor uncertainty, and has moved within a range of 15 to 31 since mid-August.

“Some uncertainty about the interest rate environment globally ... also helps. People move around when there’s uncertainty.” A falling Australian dollar may have increased interest from foreign investors, he added. Trading volumes continued to rise in January, with the average daily value of $4 billion up 7.6 per cent from the first month of 2015. AAP

MY TIME

TODD’S GROG Todd is counting down the days until his brew-free February ends and he can get back on it.

R

ecently my doctor told me it’s time to start taking better care of myself. He said I need to watch what I’m drinking, so I started going to bars with mirrors. My GP then reiterated that alcohol isn’t the answer and it isn’t, unless of course you’re asking what I’m doing this weekend. I had an embarrassing moment at the bottlo last month when I asked for a six-pack of Less. The young guy was like, “Sorry Toddy, I’ve never heard of Less, is that new?” I replied, “Not sure, it’s just that my doc said I should drink less, thought I’d give it a go”. I’ve always said alcohol isn’t the only thing in my vodkabulary. Although I did look it up once on whiskeypedia and if you drink too much of it, it’s likely tequilya. Considering my last urine sample had an olive in it, I felt it was time to heed the good doctor’s advice and perhaps abstain from the drink for a bit. Given that over Christmas I’d drunk ten times my own body weight in booze and dedicated a large portion of New

SAVE

Years to eating cheese to the point where my chest felt tighter than a camel’s bum in a sandstorm, I knew I couldn’t wait until mid-year to detox. Seriously, up until three weeks ago if I’d cut myself shaving I’d be bleeding triple brie. So once ‘Canuary’ was done and dusted (that’s my nickname for January – I only drink beers from cans for the whole month), I set about dedicating February to getting on the wagon. This is not the first time I’ve given up drinking and indulging in rich foods. The last time I did, it was the worst 24 hours of my life. But given the regular visits recently from captain gout, I knew it was now or never. Of course I normally dub February ‘Febrewary’, as I sample a different beer every day for the month. Thinking now was as good a time as any, and given that Feb is the shortest month on the calendar, I have successfully gotten more than halfway through without a drop of booze. The only moment I thought I’d break was when I bumped into my buddy Tristo at the beach, told him my caper and he delivered the following horrifying news: “Shortest month of the year sure, but it’s a leap year buddy”. Could I sustain this new teetotaling vibe for 29 days not just 28? I became all emotional as I continued walking up the beach. My eyes welled up – had I bitten off more than I could chew? It was at that point my dog Pepper Potts winked at me. So I winked back. Whenever she winks at me I always wink back just in case it’s some sort of code I don’t know about. She successfully distracted me and I shelved

plans to apply for a liquor licence for my wagon and I dug in deep. Back to the grog-free month formally known as Febrewary and now not very affectionately known as ‘NObrewary’. Truth be told, the strain is beginning to show and I’m seriously considering taking up smoking to just take the edge off not drinking. The one thing that has kept me going throughout this experimental detox is the knowledge I’ll be wrapping my laughing gear around a half dozen Little Creatures delights come March 1. Throughout the festive season I became a massive fan of the new LC Dog Days Summer Beer. Everything about this seasonal brew is tops. The Dog Days is the perfect accompaniment for our hot and humid summer nights and the number one choice for an arvy playing cricket. This crisp, clean, easygoing little number is a surefire winner with the ladies too, with bright peachy, juicy hop flavours and bags of satisfying refreshment. Whirl out a sixer of the Dog Days at a mate’s barbie this weekend. I give the Little Creatures Dog Days Summer Beer a red hot 4.5 out of 5.

NATURE’S EDGE – THE SUMMIT

ou can feel the magic as soon as you arrive. You know this place is something special. As you drive along the road you look up to the towering rainforest which surrounds the property and the sense of peace and calm is palatable. You pass the first immaculately built homes and the owner’s personal touches have added to the personality of this charming over 50s retreat for retirees. The construction of the homes is of superior quality with the majority of them having two bedrooms with study and double lock up garages, private courtyards and an open spacious internal layout perfect for capturing the breezes. The planned $2.5 million 5-star recreational facilities are within easy walking distance. All the homes are environmentally sustainable with 8-star energy ratings including solar panels on

each home, with superior acoustic and thermal qualities. This retreat is active retirement living of the future. You will enjoy mixing with people your own age with absolutely no effort as everything is at your front door. You will have safety, peace of mind, and a place to house your motor home until you are ready to

get back on the road again. There are no exit fees and all capital gains remain yours. Nature’s Edge is right in the heart of the highly sought after Forest Glen neighborhood where you live in the silence of the bush, and yet only 60 minutes from Brisbane and 12 minutes from Mooloolaba. Just a short stroll

away is Kunara where you can pop in for a great coffee, vegan café, fresh fruit and vegetables or to the organic butcher shop, or browse through the selection of boutiques. Nature’s Edge has unveiled its newest release to the public - “The Summit” named appropriately – being the highest point in the over 50s retreat. It includes the final 21 sites available in stage one. With some of the best views, these elevated and breezy sites give you the privacy and seclusion many have been looking for. The majority of sites have north or east facing patios and are expected to be popular. AGED CARE FACILITY BREAKING NEW GROUND

R

esidents at the Living Choice Twin Waters retirement village are celebrating as construction of a high care residential aged care facility has commenced, delivering 114 additional aged care beds for the Coast and all the benefits of co-located care to village residents. Living Choice Director Ian Tregoning says the company joined forces with Estia Health to deliver the aged care facility at Living Choice Twin Waters, with Estia set to own and operate the facility and Living Choice’s construction division engaged to build the two storey complex. “We are delighted to see this project break ground and to add residential aged care to the great offering we already have for our residents,” says Tregoning. “Recent research conducted by Grant Thornton found that retirement villages

with on-site care services were increasing in popularity and outperforming stand-alone retirement villages. This is because residents have peace of mind knowing a higher level of care is available should they need it. This is particularly important for couples, as both partners are able to remain living in the same precinct if one requires a higher level of care than the other.” Tregoning says while numerous retirement villages and over 55 lifestyle resorts existed on the Sunshine Coast very few offered residential aged care on-site. The new facility will offer 114 single rooms with private ensuites, a community garden, hairdressing salon, library, sensory garden for dementia patients, dining rooms and lounges, activity rooms and

consulting rooms for visiting medical professionals. Estia Health Project Director Peter Hamilton says the new high care facility would also include commercial kitchens to provide meals to residents as well as a high level of specialist support. “We’re pleased to be offering various specialist services on-site including respite and memory support care, which will allow us to cater to residents with a broad range of conditions,” says

Hamilton. “During construction, the project will generate up to 120 jobs and, once completed, the facility will create employment for up to 50 local staff members so this is certainly an exciting project for the region.” Twin Waters Retirement Village Residents’ Committee Chair Jenifer Simpson OAM says the addition of residential aged care to the Living Choice Twin Waters retirement village had been very well received by residents. “It is very reassuring to know that on-site care will be available close to home should we need it — it provides great peace of mind knowing your support network is still within walking distance,” says Simpson Construction of the $25 million dollar facility at Twin Waters is expected to finish in May 2017.

MOTORING PREVIEW

THE SECRET IS OUT Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the CITROEN C4

P

SST….want to hear a secret? It’s about the new Citroen C4 hatchback. It’s got a new engine. Pretty impressive too – more powerful, more efficient and cleaner than the previous one. Not that you’d guess. You see, the people from Citroen seem keen to keep a lid on it.

There are 13 pages of detailed information in the press kit for this new “repowered” C4 hatchback. But it’s not until the second-last page, halfway down, that they tell you the most significant thing about this recently relaunched model and its all-new engine. Oh sure, they mention that it’s now

turbocharged, and hence more powerful, more fuel-efficient and is now mated to a smooth new six-speed transmission. And, of course, being a European car, they extoll its compliance with the latest Euro 6 emissions requirements and its stop-start fuel-saving technology. But in all the reams of information

about this new car and its new powerplant, the folk from Citroen have largely glossed over one, rather relevant point about the C4’s ground-breaking PureTech engine – the fact that it only has three cylinders. That’s right, a tiny, 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine for a roomy, well-appointed hatchback such as this one with less capacity and less cylinders than many motorbikes. Hardly seems right, you might think. But it is – in every sense of the word. This very clever, very efficient and surprisingly powerful engine is by far the most significant innovation in the just-released, refreshed model of French maker’s volume-selling hatchback. So, why the big secret? The French, of course, are the masters of quirky design and avant-garde innovations and they rarely fail to surprise and delight. Yet for the most part this new C4 hatchback is remarkable mostly because it’s so conventional. No radical new takes on the steering wheel, like in the C4 of a couple of models back. It even lacks the challenging looks and layout of its namesake, the C4 Picasso which we tested in this space a few months ago. continued page 42>

<from page 38 But at first glance the C4 hatch is no different to the plethora of nicely-built, beautifully-finished Euro hatchbacks scrabbling for their share of the market. Except for that engine. I’m not sure why they’re being so coy about this new powerplant – despite its seemingly puny size and capacity for a reasonably substantial car. Because it’s terrific. Sure, it doesn’t produce the firecracker performance you might get from some larger-capacity engines in this class. Nor does it boast the hefty torque that the turbo-diesel variants offer. But it shifts the C4 along quite impressively – pulling smoothly away from the lights and rapidly picking up speed. And it actually sounds pretty good, too, with an exhaust note that’s full of character and becomes quite rorty as the revs rise. Best of all it uses bugger-all fuel – with an official thirst of just 4.9L/100km and planet-friendly emissions of 113 grams per kilometre – comparable to ecofriendly hybrids like the Toyota Prius. Not that the C4 wasn’t in line for some improvements in the engine department. The previous model made do with an unimpressive, normally-aspirated 1.6-litre

HOW FAST? It’s no racing car, but the C4 performs surprisingly well for a car with such a tiny engine. Despite modest power and torque outputs, the three-cylinder powerplant even seemed adequate up hills or when carrying a decent load. HOW THIRSTY? Here’s the good part about having a smaller engine – the official consumption is 4.9L/100m. HOW MUCH? The Citroen is not cheap but high levels of specification and excellent finish quality help justify its pricetag. Entry-level models start at just under $30-grand, while our Exclusive test machine costs $33,990 plus onroads.

four-cylinder, mated to an antiquated four-speed automatic transmission. Compared to that anything would be an improvement – and the so-called PureTech three-cylinder is certainly that. The C4 occupies an interesting place in the market when compared to some of its fellow European rivals, such as the VW Golf, Ford’s European-built Focus and Holden’s Opel-sourced Astra, and, of course, the Citroen’s corporate cousin Peugeot 308 – also built by French giant PSA. The C4’s entry-level Seduction model starts just under $30-grand before onroads – a hefty price that’s somewhat offset by the high levels of equipment included in even the base-model. Those include satellite navigation with colour touch-screen, halogen headlights with

LED daytime running lights, 3D-effect tail-lights, automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers, dual-zone climate control, rear parking assist and electrically-folding mirrors. Citroen claims this new model includes $5500 worth of new gear for the $29,990 price. The higher-spec Exclusive model, tested here, adds rear-view camera, partial leather trim, glass roof, blind-spot monitoring, keyless entry and pushbutton start, electric parking brake, front and rear parking sonar and smart 17-inch alloys – making the $33,990 asking price seem pretty reasonable. French cars have traditionally boasted good ergonomics, superior finish and excellent cabin quietness and the C4 continues that trend. It feels more nimble than the superseded model, largely because of the 108kg weight saving of the new engine. It’s roomy inside, and Citroen boasts that its 408L boot capacity is the best in the segment. There’s also ample storage in the front including little nooks on the dashboard and under the armrest. Put it all together and the C4 represents an attractive package – offering more for your money than the model it replaces. But less engine, of course. Just keep that to yourself.

ARIA SHELVES $200 MILLION PROJECT

T

he $200 million luxury residential and retail development adjacent to the Mooloolaba Surf Club has been shelved, with the developer expressing shock at the Sunshine Coast Council’s treatment of the project. Michael Hurley of the Aria Property Group, which owns the site, says the application to develop has been put on hold. “We are shocked that five councillors rejected the first stage of the development application after council’s own staff supported the proposal.” “Our business needs certainty. This has been a very frustrating exercise. Our aim was to deliver an international standard project that would be a catalyst for Mooloolaba and the Sunshine Coast”. Aria was proposing a five-star resort style offering with 1,400 metres of high end restaurants and retail, consisting of seven tenancies. The project incorporated $4.5 million of upgrades to the public realm. A council spokesperson says there are two separate issues at play. “The Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) has

Artist’s impression of the ARIA development received an application for a volumetric – or underground – road closure over part of Burnett St and Mooloolaba Esplanade, which would allow construction of a basement car park associated with an adjoining mixed use

development.” “The motion on this matter was considered by council and lost. “Separately, council is yet to determine the outcome of a development application for the

adjoining mixed use development. “The developers have requested that the development application be placed on hold. As such, council officers have not yet made a recommendation in support of or against that development application.” Hurley says the proposal to deliver an international standard park on the Mooloolaba Esplanade was in accordance with the already approved SCRC Mooloolaba place-making plans and would have delivered 49 additional car parks to the community. “The much discussed building height is in line with nearby buildings Oceans, Sirocco, Zanzibar, Sea Pearl, two levels lower then Newport and six levels lower than Mantra. “Eighty-one per cent of the community and local business were strongly in support of this project. “It’s forecast the project would have delivered 859 jobs during construction and another 262 on an ongoing basis. It would have been the second largest project on the Sunshine Coast after the hospital and deliver a much needed boost to the local economy and tourism.”

STASH YOUR CASH AND BUY A HOME Looking to break into the property market? Here are our tips on how to budget accordingly.

Y

ou’ve been following the local property market and feel the time has come – you are ready to take the all-important leap into the world of real estate. Whether you have plans to purchase a home to call your own, or a property for investment purposes, there is one thing every first buyer needs – a deposit. Saving and scrimping may sound daunting but there are plenty of ways to achieve your dream. My Weekly Preview shares some tips on saving for that all important deposit.

44 My Weekly Preview | February 19, 2016

HOW MUCH?

coffee adds up.

That’s the million dollar question. Basically, the more money you have saved, the less you need to borrow. It will also come down to the price of the home. Keep in mind, the less you borrow, the less you have to pay back. Aim to have a 20 per cent deposit as this means you won’t have to take out lender’s mortgage insurance.

Save your money in a high interest account. Talk to your bank about the best option for you. It is also important to be able to show a steady history of saving. Banks will want you to show a three-month saving period.

WHAT’S THE INTEREST?

STRAIGHT TO THE BANK

HELPING HAND

Have money directly debited from your account on pay day and directed into your savings account. If you can manage it, save at least 10 per cent of your pay – more if you can.

Take advantage of the Australian Government’s First Home Buyers Grant scheme. In Queensland, first home owners can access $15,000 under the Great Start Grant initiative. To be eligible, you must purchase a new home, buy an off the plan property or buy property and build your new home. The property value must be less than $750,000.

BUDGET, BUDGET, BUDGET Take time to calculate a sensible and practical financial budget that is manageable. The key is to stick to it. You’ll soon see where your money is going and be able to bank more dollars. Say no to luxuries and unnecessary expenses. Even little things like putting a hold on buying bottled water or a daily

you start with a clean slate and give you the chance to focus on your mortgage.

REDUCE DEBTS One thing lenders will look at is your existing debts. If possible, reduce any credit card or car loan debt before approaching the bank. This will also help

Howdy surfers, hope you were able to find a few end sections during the week from our fairly straight ground swell thanks to TC Tatiana and Winston. The weekend looks remarkably similar to last week with plenty of swell around but the winds will not be in our favour. The synoptic charts tells us we can expect a long range ground swell up to 3-4 foot in exposed areas but for the most, the southern stretches picking up the most swell will be wind effected. Moderate to strong SE’s look set to blow again so it’s going to be back to the normal haunts of Moffatt through to Dicky’s and the Maroochydore stretch. Noosa will have a few of clean ones on the outer bays but will be crowded. Enjoy.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream around a kilo are prolific on the rising tide from the mouth of Eudlo Creek to Chambers Island. Mullet fillet is the preferred bait. Whiting are taking yabbies in front of Picnic Point boat ramp. There are flathead and mud crabs around Bli Bli bridge. SURF: The hot spot for trevally and tailor is Pincushion, either casting slugs or floating pillies with dawn and dusk the best. You can get dart and quality sea bream from Twin Waters beach track to the bar. OFFSHORE: Spanish mackerel are showing up at dawn on the north drop off of the inner Gneerings. Parrot, grassy sweetlip and moses perch are taking cut baits, also at The Gneerings. Recent rough seas have prevented anglers venturing to the Barwon Banks, so make it a target location when conditions allow. FRESHWATER: At Lake Baroon you can catch bass and spangled perch using lures worked along the weed line or shrimps jigged near the drop offs. Lake Macdonald is also working well for bass and Mary River cod the best bet is to troll deep divers from the boat ramp to the point opposite the scout den. Always check the warnings on impoundments before venturing out as blue green algae has been a recent problem for some dams.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Many crabs will be in cranky mode on Monday and Tuesday, when the full moon, Mars and Neptune cause chaos in your communication zone. So aim to be selective about who you mix with, as you’re liable to misread signals, then overreact.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Lions love luxury, but avoid the temptation to blow the budget with some binge shopping. The full moon fires up your finance zones, and encourages your tendency to be hasty with cash and careless with credit (especially on Monday and Tuesday).

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Loved ones will demand your attention but the full moon urges you to take time out for yourself. If you indulge your interests and passions, then you’ll have more to offer those around you. On Thursday, Mercury and Saturn fine-tune your mercurial mind.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Your mental and physical health require some attention. Spend quiet quality time on your own on Monday or Tuesday, when the full moon illuminates your solitude zone. Activities like reading, meditation, contemplation, yoga and walking in nature would all suit.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) You have ambitious plans and goals for the future but sometimes you hold yourself back for fear of making a mistake. Monday night’s full moon urges you to be passionate, practical and proactive as you reach for the stars!

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) The professional pressure is on this week, and family will also demand plenty of your time. But if you promise more than you can deliver, then everyone will just end disappointed. So how on earth will you get everything done? Communication and collaboration are the keys.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Hey Capricorn – are you feeling over-ready for a big adventure? Monday night’s full moon indicates travel in the next nine months, so start planning and researching ASAP. In between feeling restless, you’re also at your studious best, as you accomplish tasks with precision.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Don’t be discouraged if your goals seem unreachable. With planning and persistence, you can make your dreams come true, but you must be in it for the long haul. So don’t expect instant results – sometimes messy mistakes lead you off in marvellous new directions.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) With Monday night’s full moon revving up your relationship zone, loved ones won’t take kindly to criticism. So keep your opinions to yourself! And with serious Saturn sauntering through your career zone, you’ll taste success if you daydream less and focus more.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) The full moon’s in your domestic zone, so get your house in order and tackle jobs with gusto. But, if you spread gossip you’ll end up in hot water. Avoid taking short cuts on Thursday. A slap-dash attitude will only mean you have to do things twice.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Be extra sensitive to the needs of your partner, children, teenagers or friends on Monday and Tuesday, when the full moon triggers misunderstandings or emotional meltdowns. Aim to be a calm and steadying Taurean tower of strength.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Aries are very independent folk. You pride yourself on being able to do just about everything yourself. But that’s not always such a good idea. This week’s full moon urges you to be passionate and practical, as you learn to take on less, and delegate more.

THE LAST WORD

COAST GETS A GOOD RAP DOWN SOUTH Richard O’Leary reckons the big guns in NSW are now tuned in to the Coast’s investment opportunities.

I

t’s one thing for someone to tell you how good they are, it’s something altogether different to have others recommend them. That’s why you ring a person’s referees, regardless of how well they perform during a job interview. That point was brought home to me on a recent trip to Sydney, where I joined a council delegation trying to sell the benefits of the Coast as a place to invest. These types of pitches are dime a dozen, but the difference with this one was the council recruited some of the region’s top business leaders to become part of the big sell. The trip coincided with the start of the new business routes being offered by Qantas to provide greater flexibility for our businesses and opportunities for our southern neighbours. The target was the NSW Business Chamber, which represents 15,000 members and alliances and more than 190 chambers of commerce across NSW

This is the man who turned a startup insurance company with just a handful of employees on the Sunshine Coast in 2008 into an international success story with more than a thousand staff. YOUI is so convinced of this region’s future that last year it announced it will invest up to $100 million on a new international headquarters here. So what did he have to say? “YOUI has not only been successful on the Sunshine Coast, but part of the reason the company has been successful is because it is on the Sunshine Coast.” He went on to talk about the help he had received from the council and the benefits of basing your business in a beautiful place to live. The cutlery didn’t stop clinking, but something had definitely shifted in the room. The Sunshine Coast had gone from a having a good interview, to securing the job. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

and the ACT. The council made its case over a business lunch to more than a hundred people: the Sunshine Coast is ranked as the second highest performing regional economy in Queensland; the economy has nearly doubled in size in the last decade to reach $13.8 billion; and the average annual growth rate since 2001 is 4.05 per cent, well ahead of the national average. Our region also has the highest business confidence level in Queensland, the second fastest forecast population growth rate in the state, and there are some big projects underway. The argument was compelling, professionally presented and convincing, but it was the local council saying all these nice things – and you’d expect them to do that, wouldn’t you? It needed someone to be an independent referee, and it came in the form of YOUI Group CEO Howard Aron.
