ew things make you feel more helpless than having a sick child. Unfortunately there’s a growing number of parents going through that experience every day as the number of children with food allergies grows exponentially, as does the severity of their conditions. In our cover story My Weekly Preview’s Candice Holznagel looks at the issue of children’s food allergies, including a very personal account of the challenges she faced as a first time mother. Also this week, you get to have a quick chat with a local woman with an interesting take on what’s creating a generation of narcissists, meet a crime writer whose story has a happy ending, and test drive the new Lexus. There’s plenty of local news and views, the latest fashion statements, tips for a healthier body and life, and a closer look at one of the Sunshine Coast property gems – Cotton Tree. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

THE SOCIAL MEDIA EFFECT

Dr Lynette Maguire of Twin Waters has the evidence to prove social media is to blame for a huge rise in narcissism, particularly among today’s teens. BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? From Ken: Let the adult forgive the child. IMAGE: RACHEL CUTLER, IMMORTALISING MOMENTS

FIRST JOB? I was an office junior for an insurance company in Brisbane. Part of my job was taking the tea cart around to the executives. I’ve always had pretty shaky hands and I recall one of the bigwigs was in a meeting with a gent who was wearing a cream coloured suit. My fingers slipped with the cup and saucer and of course, he wore his tea. I thought it was hilarious. Still do actually.

WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON NOW? I’m just finishing my book on the increase in narcissism and violence in our society. I just have the last chapter on the shocking effect of porn and teen sexual health to finish. Next, I’ll be designing workshops for schools.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES... My beautiful husband Ken and my daughter Bronte.

FIRST CAR? A white Torana when I was 17. When I moved down to Sydney as a young adult, I totalled it within the first month.

FAVOURITE BOOK? When I first started my doctorate I was interested in the changes in ideologies and values in our culture. So, I designed an internet based survey to try and track those changes. I had 1100 respondents who told me their dates of birth and among other things, their favourite book at age 15. Over an 80-year period, the Harry Potter series was a clear winner. And who am I to argue with the research? I love HP!

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Almost 20 years. Can I call myself a local yet?

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? You’re kidding, right? Best place on the planet.

ONE THING YOU’D CHANGE? The Coast is very ‘white bread’, so if you’re gay, black or anything other than ‘homogenised’, you’re marginalised.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? I’m a fairly placid person and I don’t get annoyed by much. I’m not keen on injustice, fake people, liars and manipulators. And I don’t like being taken for granted.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Believe in yourself. You’ve got this.

TEA OR COFFEE?

Besides completing my doctorate, I’m really proud of a project I formed in 2013 called My Wedding Wish. We gift full white weddings to couples with terminal or life threatening illnesses. To date the project, which is supported by local wedding suppliers, has gifted weddings to the value of about $150,000. In 2016 I’m planning to make it a registered charity and take it Australia wide.

Coffee – I’m vegan, so with coconut milk or soy.

NRL OR AFL? It feels like a million years ago, but I used to be 2IC for the now defunct NRL team, the Gold Coast Chargers. I’m a league girl and Queensland born and bred, so any Queensland side will do – although I was extra excited when the Cowboys beat the Broncos in the premiership.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Walking along Mudjimba Beach with Ken, which we do every day – which means I’m happy every day.

Dr Lynette Maguire will give a keynote presentation at the Zonta Club of Caloundra’s International Women’s Day breakfast on March 4.

DIET DILEMMA

Caring for a child who has food allergies can range from mildly inconvenient to downright frightening. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

“Worryingly, there has been a 500 per cent increase in anaphylaxis admissions of children in the past 10 years”

M

y son was six days old when I realised we had a problem. I held my precious boy in my arms, my body wracked with sobs, as I tried over and over to feed him. His back was arched and he pushed me away with his tiny hands as he cried in pain. Call it mother’s instinct, but I knew he wasn’t simply a fussy feeder’. I looked at my husband through my sobs, heartbreak and hopelessness etched over his face. Breastfeeding was proving a struggle and our baby was losing weight. From around four weeks he refused to sleep through the day, some days staying awake for eight hours straight. He was vomiting, had unusual nappies and suffered from reflux. We tried natural treatment after treatment, and then thankfully, our understanding GP referred us on to a paediatrician who diagnosed bub with a dairy intolerance. He was prescribed a script-only formula and I was advised to remove all dairy and soy from my diet. Within three weeks we noticed changes, but still things did not seem right. And, once he began eating solids things only became worse. His eyes were constantly red and puffy, his face blotchy and covered in rashes and he suffered from cradle cap. Looking at photos now, I am horrified that we didn’t have a clear understanding of what was happening within our little baby’s body. He ended up in hospital twice with 12 My Weekly Preview | February 26, 2016

12.indd 1

severe vomiting. His body limp and his colour so white that we knew it simply wasn’t a bug, or concussion as suggested. A day sleep was rare and I was up with him at least six times a night. We spent five nights in a private hospital clinic trying to overcome the sleep issues but little did we know that all of these problems were linked to one simple thing – his diet. At 14 months of age, he was diagnosed with an intolerance to the natural food chemicals salicylates and amines, dairy and soy plus food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome to chicken, wheat

half of those suffering with the illness grow out of it by the age of four. According to statistics from Queensland Allergy Services, around one in 20 people will develop a food allergy and one in 100 will suffer from a lifethreatening allergy known as anaphylaxis. Sunshine Coast doctor Alison Cunningham works out of Ocean Family Medicine specialising in allergies and intolerances. She has trained under two of the country’s most respected paediatric immunologists and allergists, Professor Peter Smith and Dr Velencia Soutter.

“There are indications that our society is too clean so that infants do not acquire the healthy gut bacteria required for appropriate immune development’’ Alison Cunningham and dairy. Also known as FPIES, it is a food allergy that affects the gastrointestinal tract bringing on severe vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. If not treated correctly, an attack can lead to a change in body temperature and blood pressure bringing on shock. It is uncommon, occurring in one of 10,000 children, and thankfully around

Cunningham has worked with dozens of families towards managing both life-threatening and non-life-threatening cases. Food allergies and intolerances are an increasing problem in our Western society and more research is needed to identify the triggers so that the trend can be reversed, she says. “There is currently a great deal of

research underway to identify reasons for the escalation in food allergies,’’ she says. “There are indications that our society is too clean so that infants do not acquire the healthy gut bacteria required for appropriate immune development. “Babies born by caesarean section have an increased risk of allergic disease as they are not exposed to the bacteria in the birth canal. “Low vitamin D is also related to increase in allergies with higher rates of food allergies occurring in babies born in southern states of Australia in the winter months (caused by) reduced sun exposure for mother and baby.” Food production, cooking methods and high levels of chemicals have also been named as factors. “Allergy sufferers usually have the allergic genetic predisposition with other family members experiencing allergic conditions,’’ Cunningham adds. “The condition may be triggered by conditions while in the uterus or in early infancy.” Worryingly, there has been a 500 per cent increase in anaphylaxis admissions of children in the past 10 years. This is an extremely steep increase and it has speared new research studies. One such project is that of Melbourne Professor Katie Allen from the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute. The Healthnuts study involved 5,300 children and is the world’s first comprehensive population-based study of food allergy with objective measurement of true allergy. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

Her research revealed that at 12 months of age, almost 10 per cent of 12-month-olds had a serious reaction. Identifying the difference between reactions is vital, Cunningham says. In its most basic form, an allergy occurs when a person’s immune system reacts to substances in the environment that are harmless for most people. These reactions can vary in seriousness. “Food allergies are an immune mediated reaction involving IgE antibodies, producing potentially sudden and severe reactions, some of which are life-threatening, such as anaphylaxis with respiratory failure and catastrophic drop in blood pressure,’’ Cunningham says. “An anaphylactic reaction is treated with adrenaline injections which are available in devices such as the Epipen. “Milder reactions may include hives or vomiting. Food allergies may be identified promptly with specific IgE (Immunoglobulin E) blood tests for the individual food or skin prick testing.” Intolerances can be harder to diagnose and as a result are taken less seriously by the wider community. Cunningham says intolerances are reactions that cause direct irritation of the gut, skin or central nervous system. “The onset of reaction may be much slower, from hours up to days. “There may also be an accumulative effect. Symptoms may be vague with rashes, headaches, abdominal pains and behavioural problems being among the wide range of reactions. “Allergies and intolerances may be effectively managed by awareness and avoidance of risks, care while eating out and vigilance with ingredients. “There are many challenges, including resistance from family members, food labelling problems and travelling. “The lifestyle of the family of a child with food allergy is poor due to the need for constant vigilance.” Sunshine Coast parents Kate and Clay Anderson live with this reality. Their four-and-a-half year old son

Zephyr has had a feeding tube from six weeks of age – a nasogastric tube until the age of 10 months and now a button inserted into his stomach. He suffers from an extreme case of FPIES and suspected eosinophilic oesophagitis, more commonly known as EoE, and can only eat 19 different foods. To supplement his diet he receives prescription formula through his button four times a day, and overnight. Like with many cases, Kate first realised there was a problem while

Zephyr and Clay Anderson breastfeeding. “He was feeding every two hours and not putting on any weight,’’ she says. “At four months he had his first bit of rice cereal and ended up being violently ill but we brushed it off as a gastro bug. At one point Zephyr spent a month in hospital getting “poked and prodded’’ while undergoing every test imaginable. The tube was inserted to provide Zephyr with additional nutrients. “He had a failure to thrive from six to seven weeks so it’s a catch up game,’’ Anderson says. “Every time we trial a food it’s 50/50 on whether it’s going to be any good. Over a course of a week, we trial a quarter teaspoon, then half a teaspoon. He’s fine

up to a tablespoon of food.’’ Sunshine Coast dietician Justine Urbahn works alongside families living with allergies and intolerances. For many families she has been a lifesaver, guiding them through the little known elimination diet, which should only be conducted in conjunction with a medical professional. She says managing strict diets can be difficult but it is the key to establishing good health for sufferers and offers this advice to any parent wondering if their child has a food reaction: “Never remove a food from a child’s diet without challenging it. Removing foods can leave a child’s diet unbalanced and suitable replacement foods need to be added to the diet.” Cunningham has overseen many elimination diets and says while it’s not ideal, it is a necessity for people like Zephyr to maintain good health. “It is possible to have a low irritant yet nutritional diet.’’ For the Andersons, it has been a draining and emotional experience. To assist their little boy in feeling more comfortable about his tube, Clay got a tattoo of his son’s feeding tube so they could be button buddies. “In the beginning it was really stressful… we didn’t have an understanding of allergies and how bad they can be,’’ Kate says. “We don’t know [how long Zephyr will have the feeding tube] but we are assuming it will be in there a while longer until he can have a substantial diet. “It has been a massive life saver and we’d hate to see where we would be if the tube hadn’t gone in.’’ Anderson has since launched the Facebook group AU Tubies to bring families living with feeding tubes together forming a support network. “Keep seeking for answers until you are happy. We did everything under the sun we possibly could for Zeph, trying to find as many people who could help as we could.”

THE FACTS: • 1 in 3 people will develop allergies at some time during life • 1 in 20 will develop a food allergy • 1 in 100 will have a life-threatening allergy known as anaphylaxis • 1 in 10,000 children are affected by FPIES • Food intolerance symptoms include headaches, vomiting, abdominal pains, ongoing constipation, loose stools, rashes, behavioural problems, poor sleep and irritability • Children commonly have intolerances to natural food chemicals called salicylates, amines and glutamates which are found in meat, vegetables and fruit • Nine foods cause 90 per cent of food allergic reactions, including cow’s milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, sesame, soy, fish, shellfish and wheat. NEWS

The Coast is set to receive a new school within the next three years with the Queensland Government committing to construct a new education facility in the soon-tobe developed Caloundra South community. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the school will cater for around 1,000 students. A further two schools will be constructed in Yarrabilba and Coomera. “These three schools are in high growth corridors, with tens of thousands of new residents expected in each community in the coming decades, and are estimated to cost around $147 million.”

Dress like a zombie and join Mix FM’s Todd and Sami as they wander along Mooloolaba Esplanade to support Coast charity Team Adem, which helps to raise funds for families affected by blood cancers and blood-related diseases. The Team Adem Blood Donation Community has helped save 26,000 lives since 2013. The Zombie Walk will start at the Loo with a View from 6.30pm tonight, February 26, but people are encouraged to go early as there will be brain soccer and a Thriller dance contest from 5pm. It costs $5 to participate and there will be a zombie makeup artist on site.

RARE CHANCE TO RIDE A STEAM TRAIN Residents will have the unique opportunity to hitch a ride on a steam train thanks to the Australian Railway Historical Society Queensland branch. The organisation is hosting a train ride day on March 5. The train will depart Yandina at midday and travel non-stop to Cooroy. The return fare is $20 for adults and $10 for children aged four to 15 years. Pre-booking seats is a must and can be done by contacting the society on (07) 3252 1759 or emailing arhsqld@bigpond.com.

REVIEW

CAR PARK CONTROVERSY A council officer who is running for Division 4 in the local government election on March 19 says the new multi-storey car park planned for Mooloolaba Geoff Peters must stay in control of the council. Geoff Peters says it would be a disaster for the tourism strip if a private operator became the owner and operator. “In the not too distant future we could be paying $10, $12 or $14 per hour for parking,” he says. “We have one opportunity to get this right.” Councils says the parking fees will be negotiated with the winning tenderer for the project.

A group of local employers have joined forces with STEPS Employment Solutions on a 30 jobs in 30 days initiative launched late last week. STEPS Group Australia managing director Carmel Crouch said it is hoped the goal will be achieved before March 20. STEPS works to place people living with a disability, injury or illness into employment. “We really want the business community to get involved and find out how deeply rewarding and straightforward it can be to employ a person with an illness, injury or disability.” Call STEPS on 1300 078 377.

TRIP ADVISOR RATES MOOLOOLABA 6TH BEST BEACH Mooloolaba Beach has landed the number six position in TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Australian Beaches list. It’s the first time Mooloolaba has featured in the list on the world’s largest travel site, which has 350 million visitors a month and comprises 320 million reviews covering 6.2 million accommodations, restaurants and attractions. Sunshine Coast Council chief executive Michael Whittaker said it was wonderful recognition for the region and came just weeks after Caloundra’s Kings Beach was rated the state’s best by Surf Life Saving Queensland. Sandcastles Mooloolaba Resort and Oceans Mooloolaba were also recently named in TripAdvisor’s top 25 Australian hotels for 2016.

FOOD SUPPLY FOR KOALAS BOOSTED More than 3300 koala food trees have been planted across the region during the past week thanks to the massive response from Land for Wildlife participants to the Environment Levy-funded koala conservation incentive program. The council’s Infrastructure Services director Andrew Ryan said support from the community was essential to help the council conserve and protect the koala population, which is under threat.

thriller called Never Never, featuring Detective Harriet ‘Harry’ Blue and set in a FIFO mining camp in Western Australia. “We did most of our collaboration in the beginning when we were getting our characters together,” she says. “We had to decide what the protagonist would be like. I provided a few different ideas as to who would be killed and how, a few ideas for her back story. He likes to work in huge, detailed outlines. We took it chapter by chapter. We cc’d in our publishers as well and they added their opinions.” “The character Harriet Blue is just so extreme. Writing her was like being on a motorbike; it was so much fun. I usually feel like the more fun it is to write, the more fun it is to read.” Fox spent the five months between July and December last year writing her own book, as well as Never Never.

“For a while there I was writing two separate novels. It was quite a brain storm. I stopped sleeping altogether. I just couldn’t shut my mind down at night, I was just thinking about the characters and the crimes. I’m a bit of a dreamer anyway, I’m always thinking about murder and how to get away with murder.” Her penchant for the dark side was nurtured by an unconventional childhood growing up in Western Sydney where crime was a part of her daily life. “My dad was a parole officer at a Sydney prison for 25 years and he’d come home with horrific stories about these guys and what they’d done to each other in the jail and what crimes they’d done,” she says. “I started reading about true crime at about seven. My mum had six kids of her own and she fostered kids as well. Sometimes there were 12 or 13 kids

in the house and she just could not keep an eye on everyone. I got into her book collection and she wouldn’t notice when I sat next to my dad’s chair, listening.” Fox wrote four books and accumulated over 200 rejection letters before her first book was published. Now living back in Sydney, she teaches writing at the University of Notre Dame and has just completed a prequel novella for the Patterson collaboration called Black and Blue. “It’s good because now I have an excuse to talk about the grisly horrific things I read about all the time,” she laughs. “I used to be that weird girl that just talked about murder all the time and used to freak people out at dinner parties and now they understand. “I’m really interested in how people get to that point, the individual stories that lead people to murder. I’m always fascinated by why they do what they do, the different personality types that do it. You’ve got people who do it to make money, people who do it because they snap, people who do it because they enjoy it. I think it’s the most extreme thing you can do as a human being, is to kill someone else.” To say the past year of Fox’s life has been epic would be an understatement. She’s discussing film rights, she has a promotional tour planned for August and two weeks ago, she somehow found time to stop writing about blood and guts, slip into a beautiful ash grey beaded wedding gown and marry journalist Tim Keen. It goes without saying she’s keeping her own surname – Fox is about to be the next big thing in crime fiction.

andice Fox has always been fascinated by murder. As a child, she loved crime fiction and devoured James Patterson novels snatched from her mother’s bookshelf. Now 30 and an award-winning crime writer, she scored the deal of a lifetime last year when Patterson invited her to collaborate on a book series. A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate who moved to the Coast from Sydney seeking a more affordable lifestyle while she studied, she completed her first novel Hades towards the end of her Honours degree in Creative Writing. It won the Australian Crime Writers Ned Kelly Award for best debut in 2014 and the sequel Eden won the Ned Kelly Award for best crime novel in 2015. The third book in the series, Fall, was released in December to rave reviews. Her collaboration with Patterson, who has sold more than 300 million books, is due for release in August. “My publisher sent me an invitation to a cocktail party he was attending,” Fox says. “I was so excited about the idea of meeting him. I said to my agent, I’m going to corner him at the party, I’m going to charm him and get him to collaborate. He was like, yeah, that’s quite a grandiose idea you have there. “I told him how much I loved his work, that I’d been reading him since I was quite young. I got the news a week later he wanted to collaborate. He’s read my first two novels and really enjoyed them. He appreciated how dark and scary my work is.” Fox wrote six pitches in one afternoon, the winning idea a brutal action-packed

MY OPINION

HOW BEST TO RUN THE SHOW?

KYLIE SCORES A GOOD BLOKE

Andrew Pitcher, a member of the Sunshine Coast Economic Futures Board says our government needs simplifying at all levels in order to function more efficiently.

Sami Muirhead is gushing over Kylie Minogue’s engagement to a British actor 20 years her junior.

I

was spinning around for our Kylie this week. The 47-year-old is engaged and I breathed a sigh of relief. I know my declaration of happiness goes against the grain of being a modern woman. I mean, you do not need to be married to have it all and be happy. But I did a little air fist pump when I read the news our Locomotion lass is going to the chapel. There has always been a part of me cheering for Kylie to meet an awesome guy who would treat her right. Kylie seemingly has it all: the size eight figure; the multimillion dollar salary and worldwide fame. Not bad for an Aussie chick who got her first big break as Charlene on Neighbours. But Kylie has always seemed sad to me. She has always had such a very public love life, starting with Jason Donovan before moving on to bad boy Michael Hutchence from INXS. Then there was that love rat Olivier Martinez, who told our girl he just wasn’t ready for marriage and babies, then shacked up with Halle Berry and had a baby. I don’t care how hot your backside is in gold hot pants, that’s got to hurt. You know where she was going wrong? All the boys were so pretty. I never trust a bloke who takes longer than me to get ready. So her new betrothed is a British actor called Joshua Sasse. He has a hipster beard and he is tall. He is also 28. Kylie is 47. High five Kylie, nicely

played. The age gap is a little payback for all those men who have dated much younger women around the world since the start of time and made us more mature ladies feel like rubbish because we have laugh lines and stomachs that have given birth to babies. Okay, maybe I just went in the sun too much as a teenager, I really like Tim Tams and hate exercise, but you get my drift. So when the paparazzi got a picture of that big block of bling on Kylie’s engagement finger, it started the world whispering Kylie was off the market. Then the union was confirmed in the most delightful and old fashioned way, with an ad in the Daily Telegraph. I know. It’s awesome. The notice read: “The engagement is announced between Joshua, son of the late Dominic Sasse and of Mary Heale (nee Macauley), of Herefordshire, and Kylie, eldest daughter of Ronald and Carol Minogue, of Melbourne, Australia.” So we should all pour eight or nine glasses of chardonnay and dance in a circle around our handbags to the tune of I Should Be So Lucky. Please do us the biggest fave and sing Especially For You at your wedding and our fantasies will be complete. And for the love of cake, could you please play the Angry Anderson power ballad Suddenly as your wedding waltz? Amen, sister.

For more from Sami go to twomadrabbits.com or you can hear her on Mix FM.

‘S

imple model, positive outcomes’. There is a lot to love about politics. Debate. Policy. Process. Personalities. Delivery. Results. Outcomes. Well, not always the last three. 2016 is a big year in politics. We have local and federal elections, possible change in the Senate and instability at state level. By year end we should have greater certainty of direction at all levels and we should start to see the results of many years of economic endeavour here on the Sunshine Coast. But there is a question that I can’t get out of my head – how do we get more positive outcomes from our political system than what we do today? On the Sunshine Coast we have 28 elected local councillors, state and federal members representing our population of roughly 330,000. Each layer of government has a supporting administration. Of the 28, some agree on the direction we are going while others march to their own drum. While intent is usually positive, political debate is immature, policy formulation is complicated and engagement territorial. It’s very complicated. We have duplication in responsibilities, which results in wastage of resources and insufficient focus on positive outcomes. There are overlaps between local and state governments in aspects of planning and environmental management,

roads and other services. Between state and federal government there are overlaps in roads, health, transport and infrastructure and a taxation system that is well past its use-by date. In the constrained fiscal environment we will have in the foreseeable future, we have to learn to do more with less. Most of us want small, competent and professional government. We want it to move faster and to use taxpayer money more efficiently. We need to start with what we want government to provide, how much we can afford and be realistic with our expectations of service delivery. We then need to decide who we want to manage the journey on our behalf and have our politicians collaborating actively. We need people standing up to represent us with a wide range of real life experiences – people who have run businesses, worked in the community with people on a day-to-day basis. We should pay for positive outcomes, not effort. Let’s collaborate, but not duplicate. Change requires good intent, a clearly defined outcome and good execution. We can have simpler, more capable and more service-oriented government. We can do all of these things if we have the will to be better, and to remove complexity. As my son says all the time, ‘Keep it simple, Dad’. He has a point.

Mic Black work/life balance and understand that technology is fuelling a lot of innovation.” Having engaged more than 1000 school students in the making of his world first Pixel Mosaic project, and as one of the organisers of the first Startup Weekend for Youth in Australia, Black is hoping more students take up his mentoring invite in March 1. “Having access to industry specific mentors who genuinely want to cheer you on, expand your capabilities and show you both the pitfalls and possibilities from years of experience is incredibly valuable,” he says. Registrations for Mic Black’s ideas workshop can be made online via ideaswithmic.eventbrite.com.au. ributes are flowing in for Palmwoods man Dave Holmes who was tragically killed when the truck he was driving overturned on an embankment at Woombye last Tuesday. The 36-year-old father of two is being remembered as a hero, gentleman and all-round terrific bloke who was taken far too soon. Emergency services were called to the single vehicle accident at around 6.15pm. Police said the tip-truck that Holmes was driving lost control on a bend on Kiel Mountain Road, colliding with the guardrail and trees. The long-time Sunshine Coast resident leaves behind daughters Chloe, 17, and Kodi, 12, and wife Kara who was at the scene of the accident and held her beloved husband in her arms as he took his final breath. In a tragic irony, in 2014 Holmes was awarded the Commendation for Brave Conduct award by Governor-General Peter Cosgrove for helping to save a truck driver from a burning tanker on the Bruce Highway near Sippy Downs in 2011. Mr Holmes was a valued community member, having competed for

Mooloolaba and Maroochy surf lifesaving clubs and Maroochy Swans Rugby League Club. He was also well known for his love of music and for organising live music events at his backyard Honky’s Bar. Holmes was farewelled by family and friends at a service held on Wednesday at Gregson and Weight Nambour. The sad loss has been felt by the My Weekly Preview family as his wife, Kara, has been an integral part of the team since the magazine’s inception in 2008.

Beautiful Sai Rung waterfall in Khao Lak

THAILAND FOREVER

Go knocking on nature’s door in Khao Lak. By Richard O’Leary

T

hailand always reminds me of the theory that it would only take a decade or so for nature to reclaim planet Earth once

humans were extinct – and all the plants seem to be getting a head start in the Land of Smiles, as buildings battle to stay clear of the relentless rainforest.

Looking for a career in real estate?

In Khao Lak, a series of villages 70 kilometres north of the island of Phuket, every street seems to be under the imminent threat from the national park, which the communities are surrounded by. But these people are resilient – they’ve had to be. Nature has thrown much worse at them in the form of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami which wiped out much of the tourist destination. The official death toll was 4000 people – but it could easily be double that, and there is now an early warning system to try and avoid a similar loss of life. There is a moving memorial of the tragedy, as well as two tsunami museums. Although, the people of Khao Lak are just as focussed on their future as their past, with tourism the key driver of the local economy with five-star resorts intermingled with budget accommodation. The skeleton of a new shopping mall being built stands as a testament to the locals’ confidence – but this is a land of contrasts and corrugated iron homes are just a little further down the road. The best way to get a feel for the place is to catch a taxi while you

discover everything this piece of paradise has to offer: floating down a river on bamboo rafts, diving, waterfalls and shopping – in the comfort of air-conditioned businesses, or the more sticky, but enjoyable outdoors markets, where you can get everything from clothes and souvenirs to fresh fruit, vegies and meat. To get around you can enjoy the chilly comfort of a car, although we preferred the utes with rough canopies, where the hot humid air rushed against your face as you worried about not having seat belts. You’d see purple-painted schools; orange, lime and pink terraced houses like rainbow coloured grins; and mosques, churches and temples flash past, while you breathed in the smell of wood smoke, and barbecued meat being sold by vendors on the side of the road. It’s a short ride to any number of white sand beaches, and although the ocean was as grey as the sky for most of our trip (it was the wet season after all), you couldn’t help but relax, and share the hope that locals have for the future of this place. The vegetation may well win one day… but it will be a while yet.

STRESSED MUCH? To reduce your risk of lifelong health battles, get on top of stress before it takes you down, writes Jodi Chapman.

S

tress can sometimes have such a substantial effect on your body that it can drive you into a pathological depression or anxiety. Recognising that this has happened gives you back the power to end the depression or anxious state, and therefore the stress, once your body is able to cope again. High stress triggers the cortisol hormone to rise well above normal, automatically shutting down your digestive system while your body responds to fight or flight mode only. This leads to poor absorption of nutrients such as vitamin C, iron, vitamin D, B6, B12, iodine, zinc and many more, then a rise in cortisol and reduction in DHEA causes insomnia, creating the perfect storm for a depressive, fatigued and anxious state. Just one missing nutrient can cause mood disorders.

If stress has been so great that you are suffering with insomnia, poor memory, fatigue, depression, anxiety, or anger, weight loss or fluid retention, you may need to reset your system to get back on track. Get a thorough range of nutrients tested through blood to check your levels are adequate. Ask for a saliva hormone test for your adrenal hormones for the most accuracy. Antidepressants are designed to treat brain chemical imbalances, which may not assist when the depressive state is based on nutritional deficiency or hormonal depletion. Always look to treat the right cause with the right treatment to resolve it quickly the first time, and reduce your risk of lifelong medication and illness. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

SAY G’DAY TO A BARBECUE HERO Channel 7’s celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue will be cooking up a storm on the Coast on February 27.

C

elebrity chef and television host of Channel 7’s Aussie Barbecue Heroes series, Ben O’Donoghue is hitting the Sunshine Coast this weekend and he’s set to share some of his own grilling secrets. The passionate chef will be appearing at IGA Marketplace on Wises Road on Saturday, February 27 to participate in a barbecue with the store’s customers and staff. He will be cooking up a storm between 11am and 1pm. In the meantime, O’Donoghue has shared his favourite summer barbecue tips with My Weekly Preview.

LIGHTING A BARBECUE • Always light a barbecue with the lid up. • Make sure the gas is alight before you close the lid. • If you light a barbecue with the lid down, it might not ignite and you will get a build-up of gas (then when you do try and light it again you could have a nasty accident).

BARBECUING STEAK Depending how you like your steak, follow this guide: Press your thumb and first finger together, and with your other hand push at the base of your thumb, and that is how a rare steak should feel.

LIVE MUSIC

• Thumb and middle finger together equals medium-rare to medium. • Thumb and ring finger together equals medium-well. • Thumb and pinkie finger together equals well-done.

BARBECUING FISH It can be a challenge cooking fish without the skin sticking to the hotplate: • Place a piece of baking paper the same size as the fish onto the barbecue. • Oil the fish. • Place the fish on the baking paper. • Once the fish has finished cooking, it will lift neatly off the paper keeping the skin intact.

JULIE CROSS SET TO INSPIRE What better way to kickstart a Friday morning than with a kick of inspiration and passion? This is exactly what international motivational speaker Julie Cross is promising to people who attend next month’s Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Better Business Breakfast. The Brisbane-based woman has spent 19 years travelling the nation and the globe imparting business advice and wisdom on to willing listeners. She has had an interesting journey which began in the hairdressing industry in management positions. “The side of my job that I loved the most was the personal and professional development of my people. “When we inspire people to love themselves and what they do, then work performance always improves. “The reason people underperform at work usually has little to do with not having the knowledge and a lot to do with them feeling inspired to put the knowledge into action‌ and for me that became my passion.â€? Cross says the March 11 event will be a “lively, passionate, fun, inspiring and informative journeyâ€?. The event forms part of celebrations for Queensland Women’s Week.

“We should embrace the big vision of what we do every day and never play small on that vision. “If we could truly stand back and see the impact we make on people though our work and then be able to see the ripple effect of that impact, then I truly believe we would be amazed. The breakfast is at Caloundra’s The Events Centre and begins at 6.15am for a 6.45am start. Tickets are $40 for chamber members and $50 for non-members. BUSINESS AND FINANCE

EXPECT A TURBULENT YEAR Chris Harris from Ord Minnett in Buderim shares his views on the economic outlook for 2016.

T

he prospect of a slowing Chinese economy that cast such a long shadow across the market last year has darkened ominously at the outset of 2016. With markets in a tailspin around the world, we have summarised our thoughts and note a few things to watch. Economic perspectives – China and the US Federal Reserve look set to take centre-stage again in 2016. Deepening concern about economic deceleration in the former has upended markets this year and will likely remain a headwind until a semblance of stability emerges. In Australia, we suspect there will be echoes of last year’s underwhelming economic performance in 2016. Commodities – Despite an extremely

challenging year in 2015 – the Bloomberg Commodity Index fell 25 per cent– there doesn’t appear to be relief on the near-term horizon. The commodities team remains bearish across most base metals, and broadly across the commodities complex. We do anticipate some relief for iron ore and oil, but only when equilibrium is found between demand and supply. Currencies – We do see the Australian dollar biased lower over the next three-to-six months on the back of US Federal Reserve tightening, the outlook for commodity prices and Chinese growth. It is forecasted that the currency will fall to US$0.67 in the first quarter of the calendar year, versus the consensus view of US$0.70. Our more bearish view on the Australian currency is an important factor in our call to continue holding US-dollar earning companies within portfolios.

THINGS TO WATCH: Election year – Will Malcolm grasp the

negative gearing? The China factor – Like the rest of the globe, China is an important factor in sentiment, but it matters far more for Australia given the country consumes over one-third of our exports. GDP growth – This is household (and export) reliant. Household consumption is a key, a stutter in employment or confidence would be problematic. Terms of trade – Improvement is required here and anything less results in deteriorating Australian prospects. Debt to GDP – This ratio is building, leaving less of a buffer to manage turbulence. Costs of doing business – These remain high, which challenges productivity, growth and innovation.

“Reform will be a centrepiece of the election” nettle? Reform will be a centrepiece of the election, but there remain doubts in our mind as to whether Malcolm Turnbull will grasp the GST nettle. Also, what of superannuation and

BUSINESS PROMOTION

BRAINS TRUST

S

unshine Coast locals will be able to pick the brains of some the best entrepreneurs in the business at a unique mentoring event on March 9. Mentor Blaze is a high energy, speed mentoring event where locals can explore their business ideas or challenges with a range of willing entrepreneurs and expert mentors – in the same place, at the same time. The Sunshine Coast event will be hosted by the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast at the Institute of Professional Learning, at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sippy Downs campus. Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast CEO Mark Paddenburg says Mentor Blaze would help new entrepreneurs get direct and varied feedback on their startup idea from the Innovation Centre’s experienced mentor network. “This feedback will help them focus their idea, progress it or even dump it,” says Paddenburg. Over the course of the two-hour event, participants will sit down with up to three mentors of their choosing for short, focussed one-on-one sessions. They can also choose to Skype with mentors from other Mentor Blaze events

being held simultaneously across Queensland. Innovation Centre Entrepreneur in Residence and event facilitator Dr Dean Alle says Mentor Blaze would provide a rare opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs, students and businesspeople to speak with mentors with a broad range of expertise. “Mentoring is really important to the entrepreneurial journey, because it allows you to learn from other people’s mistakes and experiences,” says Dr Alle. “Mentor Blaze is unique because of the range of mentors on offer – you can sit down with a number of experts, all with different backgrounds and areas of expertise, which means you might get two or three fresh perspectives on a particular idea or challenge. “It’s essentially speed dating for entrepreneurs.” Mentor Blaze Sunshine Coast will be held on Wednesday March 9 from 3.45pm sharp. Mentoring runs from 4pm to 6pm, followed by networking. Tickets are $15 and places are limited. To register go to innovationcentre.com. au/event/mentor-blaze-sunshine-coast/.

POWER CONFLICTS John Gallagher from Argon Law talks about the power of attorney

I

t’s not uncommon for people to give an enduring power of attorney to a family member, such as a spouse, or one of their children. Whilst this is a wise practice, it can still result difficulties if you don’t understand the restrictions that the law places on attorneys in respect of certain decisions. The issue at stake here is that an attorney is prohibited from acting in a way that brings their personal interest into conflict with their duty as attorney. For example, if you and your spouse jointly own the family home and then you lose capacity, if your spouse (who is your appointed attorney) sells the home in order to downsize or to free up funds to pay for your care, then at law, part of the proceeds of the sale will be your property, not your spouses. The rule against conflicts of duty and interest may then apply in such a way that your spouse could not use your share of the sale proceeds to purchase a new residence for his or her own use, even if you were still living together.

A further example is where your attorney needs to sell an asset of yours to pay for your care but does not want the asset to go outside the family. The same rule against conflicts would stop the appointed attorney from purchasing the asset from you, despite having the funds and desire to do so. But the good news is that such conflict actions are not illegal where they are specifically authorised. Careful drafting of an enduring power of attorney can avoid such problems. So you should check your documents and if you have any concerns that the issues have not been dealt with, get in contact with your lawyer. If you need advice about enduring powers of attorney or wills, then the team at Argon Law can help. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY BREAKFAST WITH Event Sponsor

PRESENTS Speaker Sponsor

TUESDAY 8TH MARCH

TEAMING UP FOR SUCCESS

Join us for our very special International Women’s Day Breakfast to be held at Australia Zoo and proudly sponsored by the University of the Sunshine Coast Faculty of Arts, Business and Law. We are delighted to have Jonty Bush, Young Australian of the Year 2009, join us as our guest speaker sponsored by Mortgage Choice. PLUS we are very excited to share that Terri Irwin will present a short speech on the day too. Our speaker Jonty is a Victims Support Worker and Anti-Violence Campaigner. Queenslander Jonty Bush showed inspirational courage and strength after senseless violence brought tragedy to her family. When Jonty was twenty-one her younger sister was murdered and a few months later her father died after being punched in an unprovoked attack. Jonty chose to deal with her grief proactively and joined the Queensland Homicide Victim’s Support Group as a volunteer. Her compassion for other victims and commitment to justice eventually led to her appointment as Chief Executive Officer of the organisation. After her father’s attacker was acquitted of manslaughter, Jonty pioneered the successful ‘One Punch Can Kill’ educational campaign, which was adopted by the Queensland Government in 2007. She also lobbied successfully for a review of murder and manslaughter laws in Queensland. Accepting her Young Australian of the Year award, Jonty Bush said, ‘victim was a title that was bestowed on me but has never become a way of life.’ Decorated by Bedazzled Events this years breakfast is going to be a unique experience, who knows what the morning may bring with it being held at Australia Zoo. We look forward to seeing you there. Make sure you book your tickets fast so not to miss out.

PRESENTER: JULIE CROSS

Julie Cross, by her own admission is a “passionate speaker” and that’s what makes her so memorable, and her presentations so incredibly powerful and life-changing. Business is all about the people… the leaders, the customer service professionals and all of those behind the scenes. Attendees will be inspired by Julie’s message that we are lifted to success by those around us, whether that’s our teammate, our leaders, our clients, or even our family.

PRETTY ON THE INSIDE Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the LEXUS RX350

Y

ou know that awkward feeling when a good friend buys a garish new outfit, or gets an out-there new hairstyle, and then asks for your opinion? I had that same feeling recently while driving the new Lexus RX350. It’s fair to say that Lexus – that famously conservative Japanese luxury brand – has truly come out of its shell.

Don’t get me wrong. Lexus is one of my favourite brands – and the RX has long been one of my favourite cars. And, despite what Lexus describes as its “bold new look”, that remains the case. But boy, this one certainly grabs your attention. It’s not as though this is a desperate look-at-me tactic, either. The RX is the most successful model Lexus has ever built – one that began the

“urbanisation” of the SUV category when it first hit the roads around the turn of the millennium. In a dozen years on sale in Australia, more than 30,000 RX units have been sold – easily outstripping every other Lexus model over that period. But more than that, the RX has largely changed the public perception of Lexus – a turning point after years spent trying to escape the shadows of their parent

company Toyota. It was, at the time of its release, the first Lexus that didn’t even vaguely look like an equivalent Toyota model. It became the face of Lexus – elegant and ethereal in its design and amazingly refined in its road manners. Too posh to be an off-roader – even a pretend one. Subsequent models have evolved and enhanced that curvy, slinky silhouette that has come to represent the RX. All three previous versions could have been lovingly carved by a classic Italian sculptor. This latest one, not so much. The fourth-generation RX looks more like it was sculpted by Edward Scissorhands – so sharp are the edges, so severe its angles. You fear you could slash your hands while giving it the weekly wash. Ugly is certainly not the right word. But it’s challenging, for sure. In its ever-more fervent push to appeal to a younger, sportier audience, Lexus has adopted an increasingly aggressive styling palette. But this one – particularly in the glorious, glossy black paintwork of our test machine, would look at home in Darth Vader’s driveway. Anyway, that’s enough of the aesthetic continued over >

MOTORING

<from previous page stuff. Because, for every bit as sharp and angular as it is on the outside, the RX is equally sleek and polished on the inside. As loud and confronting as that exterior might be, the car makes up for it in terms of quiet serenity the moment those big doors clunk shut. Slide into its perfectly-trimmed leather seats and it’s apparent this is every bit a Lexus, and then some. It takes the qualities we’ve come to expect from this marque – plush interiors, super-refined driving dynamics and obsessive levels of finish – and steps them up another notch. And it adds an imposing array of electronic safety and driving aides – blindspot monitors with cross-traffic alert; pre-safety collision system, all-speed active cruise control, rear-view camera, dynamic integrated vehicle management and lane-keeping assist are but a few. There’s also roll attitude control, anti-dive control, anti-squat control, rebound control and something called “ruggedness-sensing control” – that further cocoons occupants against vibrations on irregular road surfaces. The cockpit layout is familiar from past models, but improved in just about every way. Central to the cabin management is

an enormous colour display at the top of the centre stack, accessed via an improved version of the Lexus Touch system. It uses a mouse-style controller to select from a range of functions and has been tweaked but, in my view, is still a touch clumsy compared to European rivals. But there’s no disputing the amazing attention to detail involved in virtually every part of the Lexus’ interior. The plush leather seats are, of course, fully electronically adjustable – including the pitch of the rear seats – and front-row passengers also enjoy internal heating and cooling. The familiar Mark Levinson sound system – a staple in Lexus models these days – delivers on its promise of concert-quality listening with 15 speakers dotted throughout. The electric windows are an example

of how meticulously-built this Lexus is – the glass travels up and down in complete silence – not even the slightest hint of an electric motor is audible. Similarly, the RX has all but eliminated engine and road noise with a smoother, more powerful and more efficient version of its tried-and-tested 3.5-litre V6. What it lacks in efficiency it more than makes up for in refinement. The eight-speed auto is very smooth but not perfect – it’s occasionally prone to hunt up and down the range for the right ratio, which is irritating in a car of this ilk. Like the previous model, this fourthgeneration RX offers a choice of three powerplants and four trim levels. The RX200t – featuring the first turbo engine ever built by Lexus – opens the batting with 175 kilowatts and 350 newton metres and an entry-level pricetag of $73,000. It is offered in only one trim level. Our test vehicle – the RX350 sits mid-range from $80,000– with a choice of Luxury, F-Sport and Sports Luxury variants – as does the flagship RX450h which kicks off from $88,000 up to $106,000 for the Sports Luxury variant. It all adds up to a pretty impressive upgrade to this perennial favourite among the leafy-suburbs set – and one that proves beauty is more than skin deep.

LEXUS RX350 HOW BIG? This fourth-generation RX has grown in every direction, meaning improved interior space and cargo capacity, plus improved ride and stability – a genuine five-seater. HOW FAST? The 3.5-litre V6 of our test machine is smooth but punchy, meaning it will reach the speed limit in about eight seconds. The hybrid model is slightly quicker, the two-litre turbocharged engine slightly less so. HOW THIRSTY? Average combined thirst for the V6 is 9.6L/100km which is reasonable but not outstanding. The hybrid (5.7L/100km) and the turbo (8.1L/100km) are worth considering. HOW MUCH? The entry-level RX200t starts from $80,000 plus onroads. We tested the RX350 Sport Luxury with an asking price of $98,000 – not cheap but still attractive when measured against some of the European alternatives.

NEGATIVE GEARING DEBATE

L

eading tax agents H&R Block claim any change to Australia’s current negative gearing program will affect both wealthy and lower income earners. According to Australian Tax Office figures, 72 per cent of investors with negatively geared properties earned $80,000 or less. Changes to the program will impact many middle income families, H&R Block said in a statement released earlier this week. Last week Labor’s plans to limit negative gearing to new properties and halve the capital gains discount made headlines across the nation. The changes in policy won’t apply to investments existing before July 1, 2017. Defending the proposal, Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen claimed the changes would save $7 billion each year in a decade. According to Newspoll statistics released earlier this week, 47-31 per cent of people support the policy. Among Coalition voters, 40 per cent endorsed the Labor plan with 46 per cent opposed. Meanwhile, 60 per cent of Labor supporters backed the change compared with 20 per cent opposing it.

While Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has not ruled out possible changes to negative gearing under his government’s tax reform process, he has warned that property prices will plummet if Labor rolls out its plan. On Monday, The Property Council fought back against the proposals and released a TV, radio, print and digital campaign promoting the benefits negative gearing has on the Australian economy. Chief executive Ken Morrison said with almost two million Australians owning an investment property – and

around 1.2 million of those negatively geared – it was an industry that’s vital to the economy. “Property generates one ninth of Australia’s GDP,’’ he said in a statement. “Sudden lurches in policy are risky to an industry that is contributing so much to jobs and growth. “Negative gearing is a vital part of the means by which Australians, from all walks of life, secure their financial future. “Our message to both sides of politics is: don’t play with negative gearing.” H&R Block’s Tax Communications director Mark Chapman says whatever the outcome there would be consequences and it would impact on other parts of the tax system, including the broader retirement savings system and the role of deductions in the system, including for small business and employees. ““What taxpayers need now is certainty. At the moment, radical and… unpalatable ideas are being run up the flag pole and for many taxpayers – consumers, employees, investors – there’s a feeling of uncertainty in the air. “The government needs to make clear exactly what its intentions are so that taxpayers can begin to plan with certainty.’’ AAP

TREE CHANGE Buyers cotton on to benefits of this Sunshine Coast suburb. WORDS: Dorothy Whittington

here the river meets the sea, Cotton Tree is increasingly being hailed as the new Noosa. It has a caravan park not unlike the old Noosa Woods, a prime esplanade park, a main street dining precinct and the Maroochydore Surf Club around the corner. Although it officially comes under Maroochydore’s 4558 postcode, anyone who lives in Cotton Tree will declare its independence, as it was once a township complete with picture theatre, in its own right. A legacy of the glory days is that it

36 My Weekly Preview | February 26, 2016

36.indd 1

has a main street, King Street, and a post office, supermarket, butcher, bottle shop, and laundromat among its cafes and boutiques. These stores also serve thousands of holidaymakers who turn the camping ground into a tent city every holiday season. There are more coffee shops than restaurants as this is a brunch destination. You’ll be hard pressed to find a spot in the morning but it becomes a little easier in the afternoon. It’s also the centre of the club district with the RSL, surf and bowls clubs all within its radius.

A few of the early holiday houses dating from the time when only a gravel road connected it to Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba, still squat among the apartments blocks along the river esplanade. The original homes on the ocean front have all but disappeared. In the 1960s, it was a popular family swimming hole complete with a slippery slide in the bay in front of the Boathouse Restaurant, but the whim of the river and shifting sands continue to change the lay of the land.

SUMMING UP: Cotton Tree, with its flat streets, breakfast hub and abundance of units and townhouses, is made for active retirees and downsizers. It’s possible to live without a car here, as all the ingredients for an easy life are within easy walking distance (cycle if you’re in a hurry) including the Sunshine Plaza, patrolled surf beach, cafes and restaurants and heated Olympic pool, library and bowls club.

PROPERTY ADVICE John Gallagher from Argon Law provides some interesting information about pool safety certificates…

If you are thinking about buying, selling or leasing a property in Queensland which has a swimming pool or spa, then you should be mindful of the rules relating to the need for swimming pool safety certificates. For the worthwhile purpose of saving lives, a pool safety register has been established, which can be freely searched online. It contains details of properties which have pools and whether there is a current pool safety certificate. Only registered inspectors can issue these certificates and it can be an expensive exercise to install or rectify a pool fence to obtain one. Since November 30, 2015 it has been compulsory for all pool owners to comply with the pool safety laws and while you don’t have to have a certificate to prove that you comply, you must have a certificate before you can lease a property. If there is no certificate for a property when it is sold then one must be obtained within 90 days of settlement. The seller of a property with a pool must either provide the buyer with a current pool safety certificate, or if there is no certificate, a seller can provide to the buyer a form called a Notice of No Pool Safety Certificate. This notice advises the buyer that they have 90 days from the settlement date to obtain a safety certificate unless the pool is on the common property of a body corporate, in which case it is the responsibility of the body corporate. Sellers must provide a copy of the no pool safety certificate to the relevant government department and the local councils who enforce the pool safety laws. Most standard contracts for the sale of residential land include provisions about pool safety certificates and it is important that buyers and sellers understand their obligations. In some circumstances failure to satisfy those provisions can result in the termination of the contract. John Gallagher is a director at Argon Law.

FRESHWATER: The blue-green algae problems continue at Lake Borumba, hopefully the next week will see an end to this. Most boat ramps have signs notifying the public if there is a problem. More rain will see an end to this phenomenon. The upper reaches of Coochin, Coolum creeks and Noosa River are the best for bass and jew on medium diving lures and earthworms.

Another Winston once said “we will fight them on the beaches” and ladies and gents it could be time to take your guns out of their holsters before heading to the beach this weekend? TC Winston is not sending the enemy but some very welcome lines of a potentially epic surf for the weekend. If the forecasters have got it right and Winston behaves properly we will see 6 to 8 feet of swell which spells disaster for our open beaches but the points (you know which ones) should be firing. This swell event is definitely for the experienced only so please know your limits and be happy to just watch the experts tear it apart.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Trevally are taking prawn lures at the motorway bridge pylons. Cast your lure, count to three, twitch and wind in. Whiting are taking cured worms and yabbies on the drift from Chambers Island to Picnic Point. Use these whiting as live bait for flathead and mangrove jack on the same drift. Mangrove jack and mud crabs can been found around Bli Bli Islands. SURF: There are dart along most Coast beaches on the rising tide, using beach worms. Whiting are in the low tide gutters at Mudjimba. Pincushion Rocks has tarwhine on mullet fillet and you can get jew at night using pillies.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Are your dreams achievable? Or are you being unrealistic about a project that’s due? Perhaps you need to get others on board and delegate more? If you think creatively, generate your group connections and keep your options open, then you’ll taste success.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) Are you viewing your career through rose-coloured glasses? Perhaps you need to be more realistic about what’s going on? And avoid over-reacting on the weekend. Blurting out the first thing that comes into your mind is definitely a recipe for trouble so bite your tongue.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) The week will run more smoothly if you roll up your sleeves and be disciplined and conscientious as you re-organise your routine, plus streamline tasks. And resist the temptation to be a cream-bun-eating couch potato!

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Lions love to live it up, but this week Saturn puts the brakes on, and reminds you of all your responsibilities and the list of jobs to complete. Plus something (or someone) may stop you from expressing yourself in the fun and carefree way you’d like to.

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) You don’t usually shirk your duties but this week you’ll be so busy that you may slip into forgetful mode. If you do your fair share of chores, it will keep housemates happy. But if you don’t pull your weight (for whatever reason) then expect a few unpleasant consequences.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) You’re in the mood to catch up socially with friends and workmates. Creativity is also highlighted, but aim to be adaptable so you can keep up with constant surprises and ongoing challenges. Hard work and consultation will take you far!

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Procrastination and Scorpio sulking are out, and being proactive is in, as you make the most of Mars charging through your sign until the weekend. So get motivated and take action! On the home front, strive to be firm yet flexible with a stressed family member.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Communication is emphasised (especially with family and neighbours) so expect plenty of phone calls, texts and emails. But avoid saying something rash to a stressed relative. You’ll feel restless on the weekend, when action-planet Mars charges into your sign.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) This week’s stars boost your perfectionist side, and your attention to detail. Aim to get the balance right between creative and conscientious. Hard work without some divine inspiration is meaningless. And avoid the tendency to brood over your mistakes.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) With charm planet Venus vamping through your sign until March 12, it’s a fabulous time to flutter your eyelashes (or flex your pecs) and ask for what you want. But if you don’t capitalise on lucky opportunities when they come along, then success will be fleeting.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Early in the week creativity is high and your imagination and intuition are firing. But the lines between fact and fantasy could become seriously blurred so it’s not a good time to make important decisions involving work or money. So be a flexible fish and wait.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) If you rush into a complicated situation without some forward planning, then you could end up with a mess on your hands. Time for rams to slow down and do the research. And don’t underestimate the power of your intuition to point you in the right direction.

THE LAST WORD

JUST HANGING OUT ON A MOUNTAIN Richard O’Leary says sometimes it’s fun to ditch the flicks and take your kid out into the sticks.

I

don’t know if you would call it a tradition, but we have this thing in our house where each parent will take a child for the day to spend some quality one-on-one time – it may also be an opportunity to get our boys away from each other for a few hours so they are not in each other’s faces. I guess we could always go to the air-conditioned comfort of the movies, but we prefer to make our own adventures. So, here’s my top ten reasons why climbing Mount Tibrogargan with your seven-year-old is so much more rewarding than sitting in a daze in front of a giant screen. 1. You challenge yourself. It was hot, a Darwin build-up heat, a little like walking on a treadmill in a sauna. 2. You learn attitude is more important than fancy gear. We climbed in our usual clothes; sneakers, and shorts and T-shirts, and also packed some water and fruit.

7. You learn the hard way not to use branches as anchors points. 8. You meet new friends. Especially my son who had no problem with interrupting people clinging for dear life on a cliff face, so he could tell them about his adventure. 9. You get perspective. On top of the mountain and looking at the magnificent Glass House Mountains and Sunshine Coast – we realised how privileged we were. 10. You count your blessings. If that giant tree we found across the track on our way back down had fallen an hour earlier we would have been under it. More adventure than Raiders of the Lost Ark, and more father and son moments than Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade – and the admission was free. If only if we’d remembered the popcorn. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

3. You overcome fear. The spiders on the top of Mount Tibrogargan hung from webs like a pack of mangy eightlegged dogs – but we walked under them anyway. 4. You ponder the way people think. Someone carried a stereo up the

“The spiders hung from webs like a pack of mangy eight-legged dogs” mountain so they (and everyone else) could listen to music at full blast as they scrambled up rocks. 5. You back yourself. We may have got the wobbles a couple of times, but a near miss is not the same as falling. 6. You accept sharing the environment with others. We spotted one snake, I’m sure we missed many more.
