ne in six Australians are affected by a hearing loss, including three in every four people over 70. But it’s our youngest people who are hit hardest by a hearing impairment. It’s in those early years of the absorbent mind that they learn how to listen and speak, and if untreated a child can be left behind for life. Thankfully on the Sunshine Coast many kids with hearing problems, with the help of technology and therapy, can learn to communicate just like their peers, and in doing so open a world of opportunities for their future. In this week’s cover story we meet a five year old girl who has done just that. Also this week, you get to have a quick chat with a remarkable local artist, meet a motivational speaker who could change the way you look at life, take a trip to Mexico, and test drive the new Peugeot 208. As always there’s plenty of fashion, socials, local news and property. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

COVER STORY

THE RIGHT TO HEAR

The Hear and Say Centre is sounding out success for the Coast’s youngest residents. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

The Llewellyns: Lloyd, Marnie and their children, Mystie, Myla and Logan. Images: Carly Head

A

five year old girl walks through the grounds of Bli Bli State School on the Sunshine Coast. She absorbs the experience: the whirl of maroon uniforms, the smell of books and packed lunches, the chatter of young children; some of whom will become her friends, while others she may never get along with. She’s not feeling well, that cold just won’t go away. But it was going to take much more than that to stop her walking through those front gates. After all, this is her first day of school, and you only get one of those. And unlike many of her fellow prep students she’s had to do so much more than to just turn up, it’s been quite a journey just to get to this starting point. Myla Llewellyn is among the one in 1000 Australian kids who are born with some level of a hearing impairment or delay, from mild to profound. She is somewhere in the middle of that range, diagnosed with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss. A diagnosis that little more than a generation ago would have had severe ramifications on 12 My Weekly Preview | March 4, 2016

12.indd 1

her everyday life and long term aspirations, but as she walks into her new school she carries with her the same hopes and dreams as every other child, and every reason to believe they can come true. Her mother Marnie says that wasn’t necessarily the case when Myla’s hearing impairment was identified three months after her second birthday (her son Logan who is now 10 was diagnosed when he was four years old). “I was devastated. We were devastated. I suppose my biggest fear was maybe the bullying with other children and maybe not achieving as much as they’d want to achieve in life.” Put simply the hair cells in Myla’s cochlear don’t process the high frequency sounds as well as they should – her hearing loss is not profound, so

some sounds get through – but she really struggles to hear the “th”, “sh”, and “ss” sounds. Her hearing aids were fitted within a matter of weeks and she began intensive audio verbal therapy at the Hear and Say Centre in Nambour. Myla’s speech pathologist Liz Morosini says the evidence based program harnesses

“In the first schools that we’ve screened we’ve found an average of about five students at prep level who’ve had a hearing impairment ”

state-of-the-art hearing technology (digital hearing aids and implantable technology such as cochlear implants) to help children improve their speech and language through listening. “We don’t sign with them, we don’t get them to lip read. We are sitting next

to them so they just have to rely on the audio alone to follow directions, how to put their sentences together. We play activities and games and we are modelling the best sort of speech interactions and encourage the parents to do that in our lessons as well.” For Myla, there was no time to waste, her hearing test at birth had failed to detect any problem, so she started two years behind. Morosini says the window to learn how to hear and talk was closing – and fast. “It makes a huge difference (getting diagnosed early). If you look at it in terms of hearing development, by 20 weeks in utero that’s when hearing is supposed to kick in. So even by the time little ones are born…they’ve already missed out on those 20 weeks of hearing sounds in utero. Getting access and aids put on them early allows them to access those sounds so they can develop language and speech alongside their hearing peers.” Once her hearing aids were fitted, Myla immediately started attending myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

individual sessions, and group sessions to learn social skills, and social communication skills. This intensive regime was replicated in the home. She also had grommets put in to keep her middle ear clear, after regular infections made the underlying hearing problem worse. But after two years, Morosini says the hard work has delivered what was promised. “She’s grown into a very confident little girl who started prep this year. We have just completed a speech and language review, and across all areas of vocabulary and grammar and her articulation, she is falling within the normal range when compared to her normally hearing peers, which is very exciting. “We still have to fine-tune some of her skills. She can still inconsistently hear that ‘s’ sound, so we still have to work a lot on the production of that sound. “So we’re really just trying to consolidate those language structures and that sound for her as she’s progressing through prep, and to incorporate what we are doing in our sessions here with what she’s doing in school.â€? But for mum Marnie, these are minor blemishes which don’t obscure the beauty of the big picture‌her little girl is going to school just like everyone else her age. “It’s been fine and she’s really enjoyed it. She’s been practising her numbers and her ABC’s. She’s a very social little thing. That first week, was a short week which was probably a good thing, that first week was a bit overwhelming because she wasn’t 100 per cent, but she’s been brilliant.â€? “I knew she would be OK because she’s a smart cookie. So I wasn’t too fearful. It didn’t worry me too much. It was emotional in the sense it was my baby starting school, but other than that no worries at all.â€?

While Myla gives you the feeling she doesn’t really know what all the fuss is about, she is enjoying going to school. “Playing with my friends, having fun with my friends. I’ve been learning how to count. We’ve been singing our morning song. Myla is one of the lucky ones. In the last year Hear and Say has helped 32 children on the Sunshine Coast and more than 200 since the local centre opened in 2004. Most children will go on to lead normal lives with similar speaking and language skills as kids who have no problems with their hearing – even those who are profoundly deaf if

students at prep level who’ve had a hearing impairment or who have had a hearing issue. “We’ve found kids with buttons in their ears that have had to be removed surgically, which had been in there for ages but nobody had noticed. And obviously if there is a hearing deficiency there, then the learning delay will be prevalent as well. Parents do their best, but it’s often those just outside the immediate family who pick up the signs something may be wrong. “If they (children) don’t respond when you are calling them when you are

“The challenge is siblings are very helpful in these situations and they will assist their siblings, and you don’t realise the brother is answering for the sibling because they’ve learnt how to communicate with each other. If a child does have a potential hearing impairment they should be taken to a GP who can refer them to an ear, nose and throat specialist or Australian Hearing – and remember, the earlier it’s detected the better the outcome. Myla will continue with Hear and Say until the end of prep – and her speech pathologist Morosini says that’s when the early intervention program ends and her new life will really start to take-off. “The world is her oyster. She can do whatever her heart desires, certainly the way she’s performing at the moment, she’s responding well, she’s got some letter recognition, she’s counting, she’s wanting to write, she’s showing all that interest, so I assume her literacy development will be on track too, because she’s got the speech and language skills helping her. “They rocket to success when they graduate from our program.

HEARING LOSS STATS Myla Llewellyn is among the one in 1000 children born with a hearing impairment. they have cochlear implants. But Hear and Say’s Development and Funding coordinator Karen von Homeyer, says many children are still missing out. The not-for-profit organisation was so concerned it rolled out a school hearing screening program last year to try and find the children who are slipping through the cracks. “We’ve found some alarming figures there. This is still unofficial because we’ve just started the screening, but in the first schools that we’ve screened we’ve found an average of about five

not facing them. And they don’t react, and parents will often see that as defiant, when in fact it’s a hearing problem. It is quite complicated, which is why a grandparent or other parents, or teachers may pick up the problem. “Parents are just so busy in their everyday living that they often don’t notice that the TV’s on very loud, or the child is standing close to the TV. Tell-tale signs are you drop something and the child doesn’t react. If they don’t respond when you are calling them when you are not facing them.

• Between 9 and 12 children per 10,000 will be born with a moderate or greater hearing loss in both ears • Another 23 children per 10,000 will acquire a hearing impairment by the age of 17 through accident or illness • The high rate of hearing loss as children get older means there is a real possibility that as many as 15 per cent of school children may be affected to some level of hearing loss. $2.4 MILLION

Coolum is set to celebrate the opening of a $2.4 million sports complex jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the State Government. Councillor Steve Robinson says works are expected to be completed in May with the facility opened in mid-June. “It will boast 1600-square metres of turf, 1650-cubic metres of imported sand fill, a synthetic turf cricket pitch and 78 car spaces. The complex is large enough for two junior rectangle fields to be played on simultaneously.”

PEDALLING TOWARDS BETTER HEALTH Children will ditch the bus and car today as they pedal to school in celebration of National Ride2School Day. The March 4 event aims to promote the health and environmental benefits of cycling and it’s expected hundreds of children will take part in the event. Council’s Infrastructure Services director Andrew Ryan is asking motorists to take extra care on the roads today. “Cycling is great for kids’ health, great for the environment and helps reduce traffic in school zones,’’ he says.

CELEBRATING WOMEN March 8 is recognised worldwide as a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. On the Sunshine Coast, people are being invited to mark International Women’s Day by attending the 12th annual Sunshine Business Women’s Network breakfast. Former Young Australian of the Year recipient and anti-violence campaigner Jonty Bush will be a guest speaker while Terri Irwin will also give a short address at the event. The breakfast is being held at Australia Zoo. For tickets: scbwn.org.au

IN FULL FLIGHT

Residents may notice an unusual sight in the dusk sky in coming weeks as the red flyingfox migration continues. Sunshine Coast Council officers are monitoring the flying-fox visitors as part of the Environment Levy Program. Infrastructure Services director Andrew Ryan says the animals are following the flowering events around the region, moving between the roosts frequently in large numbers. The night critters should return to the north and western areas of Queensland by late March.

TWO DECADES OF LEARNING A two-year project to capture the heart of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s history through transformational stories of its people has resulted in the publication of a new book, Visions. The book, authored by USC staff member and graduate Julie Schomberg, includes 140 interviews and celebrates the university’s 20 year history. The book was officially launched at USC’s 20th anniversary celebrations last Friday night. The university now has more than 12,000 students and more than 1000 staff members.

The Coast’s new CBD, SunCentral Maroochydore, has moved another step closer with tenders being sought for the first stage of the multimillion dollar development. Contractors can submit tenders to build streets, parks, waterways and underground infrastructure. The ninehectare stage 1A site will eventually include the core commercial precinct, apartments, retail space, waterway and parkland. The development will create 30,000 jobs during the next 25 years and inject $4.4 billion into the economy over the life of the project.

MWP EXPANDS DISTRIBUTION Your locally-owned magazine is expanding its distribution to benefit the community, our readers and advertisers. My Weekly Preview has the largest distribution of any single publication in the region and it’s getting bigger. We have expanded our reach north as far as Coolum including Yaroomba, Mount Coolum, Marcoola and Mudjimba. In this day of media fragmentation and retraction, MWP is setting a new standard by growing on its strong base from within the magazine rather than with a new platform or media.

GRAMMAR IS KICKING GOALS Sunshine Coast Grammar School has taken out the senior male division of the regional schools AFL competition held at Maroochydore at the weekend. The boys competed in the Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay division of the inaugural Queensland Schools AFL Cup and will now advance through to the state qualifying finals of the competition. PROFILE

WALKING THE TALK

B

Julie Cross will tell the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce breakfast on March 11 that the secret of success is to love yourself. Words: Leigh Robshaw

ehind the big smile and the sparkly sequins, Julie Cross is a woman who has suffered significant hardship. But it’s the way she has pulled herself up and forged ahead in her life, determined to be happy and successful, that makes her the kind of woman people find inspiring. As a public speaker, her talks are described more like shows because of the level of emotion she is able to tap into. People laugh, people cry, and people flock to her afterwards to share their own stories. Cross grew up in regional Queensland and moved to Brisbane to start a hairdressing apprenticeship at 16. Floundering after her parents’ divorce, she felt she’d found her calling and was excited about starting a new life in the big smoke. A week into the job, her boss gave her the sack, telling her she wasn’t good enough and never would be. “It was devastating and I felt very lost,” she says. “I’d moved there for the job and I was out of home at a young age. I believed her for about a year and my self-esteem took quite a hit. I worked in a newsagency and then woke up one day and decided I didn’t believe her. In hindsight, it was a resilience building experience.” Cross took on a new hairdressing apprenticeship and through her work with John Le Court hair salons, went on to win hairdresser of the year. Her prize was an overseas holiday, which she cashed in to help fund a year of solo backpacking, starting with three months in Africa. She returned after a year and settled in Townsville as an area manager for John Le Court, which is where she met her husband, Ray, an army officer affectionately known as Flash. They relocated to Melbourne and Cross had

her first son, Jack. When he was six months old, she launched her public speaking career, having realised her true passion lay in teaching and connecting with people, rather than managing them. “I read a book called Speak and Grow Rich and had a dream for a public speaking business. My husband wrapped me up in a big hug and gave me the security to follow my dreams. He had a great paying job and was really my safety blanket.” Cross began giving motivational presentations in hair salons and toured the country, her reputation as a public speaker growing continually. “I saw a huge gap between putting information in people’s heads with policies and procedures, and filling their hearts to inspire them to put it all into

action.” By 2004, her world came crashing down when Flash suffered a massive stroke, followed by their second son, Thomas, being diagnosed with autism. By this stage, the family had relocated to Brisbane and Cross was doing her best to hold the family together. Sadly, Flash passed away in 2009 and as devastated as Cross was, she clung to her public speaking career as an emotional anchor point, bringing her raw honesty and lessons learned to her audiences, which helped her connect a deeper level. “My content evolved on stage as my life evolved around me. When we’re broken right open, it all comes out. It’s a whole new depth that you speak from. What I’ve discovered is the sooner you do open up, that you connect with your

audience. It evens the playing field. We’re all going to have a story.” On top of losing her beloved husband, Cross has had to deal with life as a single mother of two teenage boys. “I’m proud to say Jack is now 18, he left home a year ago and followed in his father’s footprints by joining the army. He’s such a kind, courageous, confident, resilient, lovely young man. He and Thomas are the gifts my husband gave me. Thomas is 14 and he still takes me on quite a journey. Children with autism don’t cope well with change in their lives, so for his dad to have a stroke, be in hospital, to understand grief and not have the words to express his grief – walls and windows have been kicked in and smashed. There are days when I’ve had to hold him in blankets.” Cross says we’ve forgotten how to love ourselves; that we live outside of ourselves and are more concerned about the opinions of other people than our own opinions of ourselves. She says women, in particular, worry too much about how they look. To that end, Cross was astonished when she posted a photo of herself in a black bikini on Facebook and it went viral. Her intention was to empower herself, after she’d been told she shouldn’t be wearing a bikini. She got 14,800 comments from people congratulating her. “The fact that went viral blew my mind,” she says. “People were saying that was brave. Brave should be walking into a burning building saving lives. We’ve got to empower up. We’re worrying too much about what people are saying. I got called some nasty names, but I focused on the 14,000 positive comments. “My message is be bold, be brave, connect at a deep level and have fun.”

The ultimate in coastal luxury.

MASTER PLAN

I

t has been decades in the making but last week Sunshine Coast Council endorsed a new beachfront community recommending State Government approval of the development’s master plan. If given the go ahead, Stockland’s Bokarina Beach will be constructed on one of the region’s largest remaining beachfront locations. The master plan includes 1120 dwellings, allowance for eight storey buildings, a public mall, commercial and retail areas, a surf lifesaving facility, a community facility, a child care or respite centre and village parks. The 29.76 hectare vacant site fronts Nicklin Way and is crown land being developed by Stockland under a Development Lease which has been in place since the early 1960s. The vision for Bokarina Beach stems back to 1996 when the Kawana Waters’ development control plan was adopted, according to council’s Regional Strategy and Planning director Warren Bunker. As a result, council must assess the application under those planning controls, not the 2014 Sunshine Coast

Planning Scheme, Bunker says. “If council were to attempt to remove an existing development entitlement, it would potentially expose the ratepayers to significant compensation.” Bunker says the council’s recommended conditions include limiting dwellings adjacent to existing residences in the vicinity to a maximum of two storeys, reducing a proposed motel site fronting Nicklin Way from six storeys to four storeys and limiting the low rise residential area to a maximum of three storeys. “Council has also recommended that the maximum height of the medium density residential sites be limited to four storeys,” he says.

MY OPINION

SPECIAL SOULS

FEARLESS FOOTY TIPS

Sami Muirhead says we have super heroes in our community – they just don’t wear capes.

T

here’s a small army on the Coast who are going about their lives quietly but waging war against unthinkable ailments on behalf of those who are unable to fight for themselves. Team Adem members have raised more than half a million dollars for the Leukaemia Foundation. Half a million dollars. Anyone who has held a sausage sizzle knows the charity dollar is a hard won buck. Team Adem members have potentially saved more than 30,000 lives with their blood donations. Their blood donor group is the biggest in Australia. People! Stop! These figures are crazy. Crazy good. Crazy to get your head around. And the people who are Team Adem are just about the finest I have ever met. Once in a while some special souls come along who blow you away. Brent and Lu Crosby are those people. The locals lost their son, Adem Crosby, to Leukaemia, in 2013. If I lost any of my children I am pretty sure I would need medication and counselling forever and I doubt I would ever be able to recover emotionally. The thought of helping others would just not occur to me. Yet these parents and their children somehow turned their grief and their ultimate loss into something the entire nation has benefited from. They are pretty much super heroes without capes. And just when you think these people need a break in life, the

opposite happens. Lu continues to win her battle against breast cancer. So what drives them to stay so focussed and positive? Brent says, “We will always have a positive outlook. We learned from our son, who although going through such adversity himself, continued to be an inspiration and always had an incredibly positive outlook each and every day. How could we not do the same?” Go to teamadem.com.au and get on board for this year’s Team Adem World’s Greatest Shave 2016. It is in just over one week. I’ll leave you with this quote from Adem’s website: “I am all too glad it was me who was chosen, because the love and wonder that I have been lucky enough to experience – I would trade for nothing in this world. I’ve been given every materialistic thing anyone could want, and it brings me nothing of the happiness and elation I feel when I am with my family (that includes my nursing family!) and enjoying those simple things in life. The beautiful things that are too often taken for granted, great food, great people, and that wonderful and incredible action of taking in a deep lungful of fresh air while enjoying the colours and feelings of nature.”

orth Queensland Cowboys - Will discover that being the Premiers is a tougher job than being the puppeteer that works Bill Shorten. BRISBANE BRONCOS – They will go one better in 2016. By that I mean they will tackle for 5 more GODDAM SECONDS!!!!! Sorry, sorry, thought I was over the grand final. SYDNEY ROOSTERS – Will be there at the pointy end again. But I don’t care, I just hope Mitch Pearce makes his return against the Dogs. MELBOURNE STORM – A lot of eyes on the men in purple this year, however it will be tough as the “Big Three” are starting to look more like the Golden Girls. CANTERBURY BULLDOGS – Need the premiership prize money just to pay Sam Kasiano’s dim sim bill. CRONULLA SHARKS – Paul Gallen will play a season high four games for the Sharkies. But will be fit for all three Origins, five charity boxing nights and a primary school cross country. On ya Gal. SOUTH SYDNEY RABBITOHS – The return of Sam Burgess is so epic, Russell Crowe is making a movie about it, he’s hoping to lose enough weight to play the Sydney Football Stadium. ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS – The “Big V” has a proud history, will be a year to focus on that.

MANLY SEA EAGLES – Will play all of their home games at Daly Cherry Evans’ house because it’s bigger than Brookvale Oval. CANBERRA RAIDERS – Even if they win the comp, will still be overshadowed by the disgrace that is Blake Austin’s Chiko Roll shaped beard. PENRITH PANTHERS – New coach Anthony Griffin may struggle to take the reins as they are locked in Phil Gould’s office. NEW ZEALAND WARRIORS – Spent tonnes of cash on players. When they put up less six pointers than Brendon McCullum, heads will roll. Given that coach Andrew MacFadden’s head is perfectly spherical, it will roll for ages. GOLD COAST TITANS – Could be a tough year for the Titans, but hey, if you’re going to win the wooden spoon, at least do it near Dreamworld. WEST TIGERS – The entire squad has worked really, really hard over the summer, oh not training, trying to find a personality for Jason Taylor. PARRAMATTA EELS – Have spent a lot of cash. They bought Kieran Foran, Michael Jennings and 17 copies of the self-help book Dealing with Constant Failure. Will get great value out of at least one of those purchases.

trolling the boutique-lined streets of this arts-and-crafts enclave near Guadalajara, Mexico, is like stepping into the brightly coloured pages of a storybook. Above, rainbow-coloured bunting flaps beneath an often cerulean sky. Fantastical sculptures on the sidewalks cast stark shadows on the vivid yellow, white and terracotta walls of the stucco buildings. Even the name has an engaging rhythm - tuh-lah-keh-pah-keh.

And the best part is this fairy tale visit to Tlaquepaque’s historic centre includes tacos.

HOW TO GET THERE Tlaquepaque, historically known as San Pedro Tlaquepaque, is a suburb of Guadalajara, capital city of the state of Jalisco. To get here from downtown Guadalajara you can rent a car or take a taxi. Another option is to take an open-air tour bus - tapatiotour.com.mx.

Once in Tlaquepaque, head for the historic centre. The main street is Independencia, which is lined with stores, galleries, restaurants and bars. You’ll also want to explore the smaller side streets. A major landmark is the Jardin Hidalgo, a large plaza flanked by two colonial-era churches on Independencia and the Parian, 199 Calle Juarez, which is a block of restaurants and bars known for mariachi music, especially on weekends.

WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND

ON?

Casa Luna, at Independencia 211, is a restaurant set in the courtyard of an old mansion with art-decked walls and colourful lanterns hung above the tables, lending a warm glow at night. Live bands play during the dinner hour and the menu offers traditional Mexican cuisine with a high-end twist, like the duck carnitas tacos. Tlaquepasta, 139 Reforma, is also a popular spot. For a more casual experience, street vendors sell a variety of foods including sweet corn on the cob.

WHAT TO DO Shop: Independencia is lined with upscale boutiques selling handmade jewellery, pottery, glassware and home goods. See: There are two ceramics museums. The Regional Ceramic Museum is at 237 Independencia. The larger Museo Premio Nacional de Ceramica Panteleon Panduro, 191

The garden is named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a key figure in Mexico’s fight for independence, and there is a statue of him here.

Low Thyroid? Get the Right Diagnosis How to Boost Energy, Mood, Speed Metabolism & Lose Weight Sluggish energy, unmotivated, weight gain, fluid retention, low mood, hair loss and low hormones are all symptoms that can occur with sensitivity to the cold. If you’ve suspected your thyroid, and had it checked, only to come back normal, you may have been on the right track, but with the wrong test.

One simple test your Doctor may not be doing can find the real reason why brain fog, sluggish energy, weight gain, hormone problems and low motivation affect you. Having a low body temperature will have you rugged up, making excuses to stay in bed. A number of health risks can lower your body temperature, making it, for some, excruciatingly painful to expose themselves to the elements, wind, rain and cold water. Your thyroid is a common cause of a low temperature, though the thyroid doesn’t play up on its own, there’s usually another cause. Your TSH is the most typical and only test your doctor may choose to check your thyroid. If you have a real and obvious thyroid condition or disease, this will generally be abnormal, leading to further testing. However, if your TSH is normal, you could still be suffering with Subclinical Hypothyroidism or Wilson’s Syndrome, a mild form of low thyroid function, and can wreak havoc for your body temperature, metabolism, hormone balance, mood and energy levels, and will not be picked up with TSH tests alone. There are a full range of tests that should be done to fully examine your thyroid health, and without these, this very common condition can go undetected for years. Once you have a correct diagnosis, treating it is the next step. Triggers for Wilsons Syndrome can be stress induced, dietary, hormonal imbalance or nutritional deficiency, and each individual can vary greatly. Finding these triggers is as simple as organising follow up blood testing over a range of nutrients and body functions to find the cause, and is often very quickly resolved. If you would like further information, please contact Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre for a free half hour consultation to discuss your particular health concerns on 07) 5443 1987.

The American actress and fitness entrepreneur, has turned heads on the red carpet with her slim and toned body and is now sharing her insights in becoming “healthy, strong and beautiful from the inside”. “When you understand yourself and connect to how you can become body smart, you realise pretty quickly that the perfect, the ideal is not the goal. Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue Masque is an all-in-one product that promises to detoxify, brighten and invigorate the skin by drawing out excess oil and impurities, refine pores, calm redness and improve skin texture. MWP journalist Leigh Robshaw was given a sample to try. The verdict: “The mask acted very quickly, I only had to leave it on for 10 minutes and by that stage my skin was feeling really tight. I massaged my skin as I washed it off – the mask acts as a gentle exfoliant, too. At first my face felt tingly and a little pink, but that settled down quickly and my skin felt super smooth and looked clearer and brighter. I did notice a visible improvement in my skin after only one use – it just looked a lot brighter, with my skin tone more balanced. I’d happily use it a couple of times a week, $65 from Lime Health and Beauty Cotton Tree and Spoilt Skin, Marcoola.

MY LIFE

TIPS TO PREVENT BACK PAIN • Eat healthy: A balanced diet with plenty of calcium. • Get active: Simple exercises like stretching or going for a walk. • Practice Good Posture: Allow the curves of your spine to be aligned. • Stop Smoking: Smoking can lead to osteoporosis and other degenerative back conditions. • Get a new mattress: One designed specifically for back support.

FOOD FADS IN 2016 1. Porridge with a twist. Forget the maple syrup and sugar – ancient grains with coconut milk are the next big thing. 2. Koji is cool. Rice that’s been inoculated with the koji mould has traditionally been used for miso soup and soy sauce but it’s now being used for everything from vinaigrettes to marinades. 3. Tumeric. Not the powdered stuff that’s been around forever but the antioxidant packed, orange flesh of the fresh root is being added to everything from milkshakes to salad dressings. 4. Chlorophyll. Apparently eating your greens is no longer good enough. A pinch of chlorophyll is seen as the ultimate energy shot. 5. H2NO. The 101 varieties of water at your local supermarket are so yesterday. The tip is more people will be going to the tap for their H2O.

CIDER CURES Some apple cider vinegar a day may keep the doctor away, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.

W

ouldn’t it be nice if we could find a tonic that helped us reduce our appetite, control our sugar cravings, and improve our digestion? Apple cider vinegar may be just the thing! It helps reduce blood sugar levels after a meal. Research published in the Journal of Functional Foods shows that drinking apple cider vinegar before a meal may help lower your blood sugar. Study participants who drank a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar mixed with a cup of water prior to eating had lower blood glucose levels compared to participants who didn’t consume the tart solution, meaning that apple cider vinegar may actually help control blood sugar levels. It slows digestion. This helps you feel full faster, and for longer. It improves insulin sensitivity.

Research shows that consuming apple cider vinegar during a high-carb meal actually helps to improve insulin sensitivity by 19-34% and significantly lowers blood glucose and insulin responses. This means your blood sugars won’t spike as much, keeping your energy stable. But can we drink it to stop a craving? The most effective (and healthiest) way to reduce your cravings for sweet foods is to avoid refined carbs and sugary foods, but apple cider vinegar may help. Despite the uncertainty about it keeping your cravings at bay, apple cider vinegar is an energy and blood sugar stabiliser, a digestion improver, an appetite crusher, and a weight loss helper! What’s not to love?

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

DIVIDEND DILEMMA

B

HP and RIO both announced results to the market during February. With commodity prices being savaged over the past two weeks expectations for the results were low, but perhaps the biggest focus of investors was the dividend policies of the two large cap miners. Let’s take a look at each company in turn. RIO has a December year end and its annual result showed a 36 per cent drop in underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). We expect a further 35 per cent drop in this number for 2016. In response to its deteriorating earnings and outlook, RIO scrapped its progressive dividend policy. The old

policy dictated that the current year’s dividend would be equal to or greater than the previous year’s dividend (in US dollar terms). Arguably, such a policy is inappropriate for a resources company that has a volatile earnings profile. RIO announced a new dividend policy to be based on a 40-60 per cent payout ratio of underlying earnings. In 2016 it will have a minimum payout of US$1.10 per share, representing a relatively attractive 3.8 per cent yield. However, in 2017 we forecast a yield of just 0.8 per cent in 2017, rising to 1.7 per cent in 2018. BHP has a June year end so it released a first-half result showing underlying earnings of US$412m, well below our US$730m forecast. The result was 90 per cent below the previous result. BHP followed RIO’s lead in scrapping its progressive dividend policy, opting for a payout based on at least 50 per cent of underlying earnings per share (eps). Based on our forecasts this will result

Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

“We see limited upside in either of the stocks at this time” in a FY17 dividend yield of just 0.8 per cent. We see the changes to the dividend policies as being appropriate for both

companies and will ensure the balance sheets are strengthened at a time when there may be discounted assets coming on to the market for sale. While it will likely reduce the appeal of both stocks to mum and dad investors due to the drastically reduced yields on offer, it may result in increased institutional interest. However, we see limited upside in either of the stocks at the current point in time, based on our view that commodity prices will stay lower for longer. We retain our Hold rating on RIO and have a price target of $39, whilst we have a Lighten rating on BHP and a $16 price target. MOLTEN CHOCOLATE CAKES

RETURN OF THE DRAGON The countdown has begun to a unique tribute to Australian music. Iconic rockers Dragon are hitting the road to celebrate another Australian institution, Countdown. The Countdown Years national tour will celebrate the hits of the 1970s and take the band, who recently celebrated 40 years on the Australian and New Zealand music scenes, on an extensive run around the country. And it will be this tour that lands the boys in Caloundra next month. Countdown was one of the most popular music programs in Australia’s history and 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of Dragon’s first performance on the show with the song Star Kissed. For founding member and bassist Todd Hunter, the thought of performing some of the songs that helped break so

many new bands during the Countdown era was an opportunity he and the band couldn’t turn down. “This show is for anyone who watched Countdown when it was on TV, which was around three million people in its heyday, so one-fifth of the population of Australia at the time,” he says. “Countdown had a huge impact on the music scene. Every weekend it got Aussie bands in front of a huge audience. Dragon will perform two sets during the show covering the band’s favourite top 10 Aussie hits from the era and their own songs. Dragon will perform at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on March 10. Tickets are $35. To book, phone 5492 1444.

Ingredients: 125g dark chocolate, broken into pieces 125g unsalted butter 3 eggs 125g caster sugar 40g plain flour, sifted Method: Preheat oven to 180°c. Place chocolate and unsalted butter in a bowl and set over a saucepan of simmering water, making sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir until smooth. Remove and set aside. In another bowl, beat the eggs and sugar together until creamy. Stir in melted chocolate-butter mixture. Fold in the flour. Divide the batter into 4 small baking dishes before setting aside to cool. Bake for 12 minutes. Paterson Cooking School Chef

MOTORING PREVIEW

WORLD’S BEST ENGINE Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the PEUGEOT 208

T

wenty years ago, an engine this small would only have been found in a motorcycle. Ten years ago, you could find a tiny three-cylinder engine like this in a Smart Car – barely bigger than a motorbike – but that’s about all. These days, the new breed of

micro-engines are everywhere. By my count, more than a dozen mainstream manufacturers have adopted this downsized technology with powerplants boasting just three cylinders (and in some cases just two) and barely more than 1000cc capacity. Japan’s Toyota, Nissan and Suzuki

and Germans like BMW, Audi and VW are all in on this small-capacity act. More recently the French manufacturers have joined this thrifty party with their own growing list of three-cylinder options. The latest of these is Peugeot’s 208 city car – an impressive little vehicle with

a small, powerful and frugal powerplant that’s been voted the world’s best. That PureTech engine is the same one that we recently tested in the Peugeot’s corporate cousin – the Citroen C4 that’s also built by French giant PSA. While it was impressive in the bigger C4, it feels absolutely at home in this smaller, lighter and more nimble Peugeot hatchback. In fact a couple of work colleagues found it hard to believe the tiny size – and big performance - of the engine when we took the 208 for a spin. The 1.2-litre, three-cylinder powerplant will be offered in two forms – a normally-aspirated 60 kilowatt version in the base-model Access; as well as a more powerful 81kW turbocharged variant in higher-spec models, namely the Active at $21,990, Allure at $25,990, and sporty GT-line from $27,490 The high-performance GTi remains the hero of the range from $30,990. Thanks to Peugeot’s bold decision to cut the model’s entry-level price by almost 25 percent, the cheapest 208 is virtually half that price – being offered for a Korean-sized $15,990. The French maker’s generous new pricing policy reflects its relative lack of continued page 38 >

MOTORING

<from page 36 success in attracting some of the 100,000-odd Australian buyers who put one of these little city cars in their garage each year. This upgraded 208 should help turn that around, because the baby Pug delivers impressively on finish and equipment. Admittedly our week-long test was in the higher-spec Allure model – but even with a pricetag of $25,990 it still makes a convincing argument, with an inclusions list that stretches to colour display screen with satellite navigation, dualzone climate-control, self-parking system, automatic wipers and headlights, electric windows and mirrors and alloy wheels. Peugeot predicts that the mid-range Active model, midway between the two, will attract most buyers. The impressive little three-cylinder engine – coupled with a new, six-speed automatic transmission on upscale models – will be the key attraction for many younger, eco-conscious buyers. Entry-level buyers will be able to add the turbocharged engine, plus the six-speed auto, for a $3000 premium. The new engines are all compliant with the latest Euro6 emission

regulations, and boast fuel consumption as low as 4.3L/100km, thanks in part to an automatic fuel-saving stop-start function. Standard equipment on all models includes USB and Bluetooth connectivity, six-speaker audio, tyre pressure monitors, cruise control with speed limiter function, air conditioning and electric front windows. One notable omission – even on the most expensive members of the 208 family – is a reversing camera which can be retro-fitted for an additional spend of $300. Balancing that is the tasty price on an optional collision-avoiding City Braking System, which for just $500 helps prevent low-speed collisions and thus

will virtually pay for itself through reduced insurance premiums. All models except the Access also get a seven-inch colour touch-screen to control most vital cabin functions including audio and satellite navigation (standard on the three higher-spec models). The screen forms part of Peugeot’s unique “i-Cockpit” design featuring a unique positioning of the main instrument panel. It’s viewed over the top arc of the tiny steering wheel. This clever design, previously seen on the company’s larger 308 hatchback, minimises the time a driver spends with their eyes off the road. Peugeot claims the smaller, sporty steering wheel adds to the 208’s “go-kart” feel. Certainly it’s a sweet-handling machine and matches that with a compliant ride and impressive noise suppression. While it’s primarily built as a city runabout, the 208 also impressed at highway speeds, with the tiny engine ticking over at a modest 2000rpm and sipping about 4L/100km in the process. Just goes to prove that the little things in life are often the best.

PEUGEOT 208 HOW BIG? It sits in the baby car light passenger category – and is certainly petite from the outside – but can accommodate full-sized adults front and back with decent room for their gear. HOW FAST? Despite its small capacity engine it’s quite spirited, thanks to the turbo charger that gives it ample acceleration and surprising low-down torque. HOW THIRSTY? Average thirst is 4.5L/100km and it emits only 104 grams of carbon per kilometre. HOW MUCH? While we tested the $25,990 Allure model, the 208’s starting price of $15,990 makes it the cheapest Peugeot in a generation.

eal estate agents are reporting a shift in the Sunshine Coast economy with an influx of medical professionals and white collar workers relocating to the region. Construction of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which is set to be opened later this year, and the subsequent development of the Kawana medical precinct is ramping up the property market. The prestige property market, particularly the areas of Pelican Waters and Minyama, is experiencing steady growth. Earlier this year, a luxury Minyama property went under the hammer fetching a whopping $3.9 million. It was believed to be the first Sunshine Coast home in years to sell at auction for such an impressive sum. The agent who sold the property,

Steve Turner of Platinum Properties, says homes in the prestige market are on the move. However, the listings can be difficult to come by. “I’ve still got five or six buyers wanting a property like that… I need more listings,’’ Turner says. “There are only a limited number of properties on the waterfront and few in that price bracket.” Turner predicts the next six months will bring market growth as a direct result of the health hub development. “It will move everything… beachfront, waterview.’’ He currently has a unique property listed. The Minyama mansion is priced at more than $8 million and boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, spa, swimming pool and gym. Next Property Group agent Alan Riley also says the market is picking up.

“With a five per cent rise in sales activity at the end of 2015, it appears the momentum hasn’t stopped as well priced properties in desirable locations continue to be scooped up in record time,’’ he says. “With a large number of residential, commercial developments and infrastructure improvements currently in the works in growing hot spots such as the University Hospital precinct, it’s no surprise that market confidence is high as increasing job creation and population growth have contributed to a relatively balanced supply and demand in the market.” Riley recently settled a Mooloolaba property within 24 hours. The Carwoola Cr waterfront home was snapped up for $2.99 million. “It’s the highest sale price for an original block in the suburb since 2008 as well as the highest ever sale price per

square metre for an original residential property in Mooloolaba,’’ Riley says. Next Property Group’s Kerri Johnston has spent seven years working in the Pelican Waters market and says the southern end of the Coast has been steady. “There are a few more waterfronts on the market at the moment,’’ she says. “When the market is hotting up in Minyama, Wurtulla and Maroochydore, the prices hook up there and the prices filter down to us.’’ Johnston has had interested buyers from Sydney and Canberra on her radar and has a number of luxury properties currently listed including a five bedroom house in Westholme Cct, Pelican Waters. The waterfront home has four bathrooms, a three car garage, pool and jetty and with a price tag of around $1.45 million, it’s considered a bargain.

focus on future housing. “Modelling by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed Australia’s population broke through 24 million,’’ HIA economist Geordan Murray says. “After many years where new housing supply has fallen short of demographic demand, housing affordability has become a perennial problem in many parts of the country. “With a population set to reach 25

million in just a few years, policy makers must make planning for the nation’s future housing requirements a higher priority. “By the year 2050, it is highly likely that Australia’s population will lie somewhere between 34 million and 42 million. “This range implies a very wide array of possibilities, any of which will have a significant determining influence on the

amount of residential building activity required in the intervening period.” The report says while future housing needs to depend mostly on the nation’s increasing population, it will also be affected by changes in the standard of living and the need to replace existing dwelling stock. “As many as 250,000 new dwellings could be required annually,’’ Murray says.

FUTURE OF HOUSING Future housing needs will depend on population growth. That is the prediction from the Housing Industry Association’s 2016 edition of Housing Australia’s Future. The report is a comprehensive analysis of residential building requirements out to 2050, both nationally and in each state. Well I have just landed from three weeks of snowboarding. What a hectic few weeks you guys had. A few consistent waves I believe, the Eddie was run and the hoax swell of 10 years did not arrive… Yep, imagine if you were one of the 300 4WDs who made the journey to Double Island last Saturday only to find no waves. Laugh, oh how I laughed! On a brighter note I scored knee-deep powder for a few weeks in Japan and clocked 91km only to be pipped by a friend who reached 95km. This weekend is ho-hum and onshore. With the Quiksilver Pro soon to start I pray they get some swell but who is going to stand up against the Brazilians if Fanning and Wright are out this year, come on Julian! Your time starts now.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are taking prawns and yabbies from Cotton Tree to the Maroochy Bar from the top of the tide and down. You can find trevally and dart along Twin Waters using prawn lures. You’ll get flathead on the drift at Bli Bli. Jew, cod and mangrove jack are at the motorway bridge. SURF: You can get sand whiting and dart along Maroochy Beach with pippies working the best. Pincushion is returning bream and tailor right on dark using frogmouth pillies. Mudjimba to the North Shore is worth a try for sea bream on the rising tide. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, squire, parrot and sweetlip are being taken from The Gneerings, Murphy’s and Caloundra Twelve Mile with squid and cut baits the best. The Barwon Banks is best for snapper, pearl perch and rosy job fish. FRESHWATER: The upper reaches of the Mooloolah and Maroochy Rivers are returning some nice bass on shallow divers and shrimps. The Six Mile Creek below the Lake Macdonald spillway is delivering spangled perch, bass and jew on earthworms and brightly coloured shallow divers. Somerset Dam has been firing for bass and golden perch by trolling from Queen Street to Red Rock.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Bulls – are you bored to bits? This week’s stars urge you to stretch yourself in dynamic new directions. Keep what’s working in your life but don’t be afraid to discard people or possessions that are no longer useful. And don’t underestimate the importance of networking.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) With the Piscean solar eclipse (and Mercury) stirring up your career/life-direction zone, are you feeling confused about the future? It’s time to think of creative options as you apply for a promotion, look for employment, start a course of study or change vocation.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) When it comes to love, powerful Pluto demands that you let go of old patterns of behaviour and find a totally new template. And the solar eclipse encourages you to throw outdated beliefs out the window and replace them with fabulous new dreams.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Avoid the temptation to fly off the handle this week. If you try to control others, then you’re in for an intense and tumultuous time. For some attached lions – your love life gets a boost, as Tuesday night’s solar eclipse stimulates your sensuality zone.

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Has your relationship been stuck where it’s difficult for both of you to change? The eclipse brings a shift in perspective, as you view your lover in a new light. Singles – have you been looking for love, and are demoralised? It’s time to charge back into the battleground.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) The solar eclipse and Pluto encourage you to transform your life in creative ways. You think you’re dealing with a problem but are you being diplomatic or just plain indecisive? It’s time to be clear and proactive, and don’t waste time pussyfooting around.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) The sun and Pluto encourage you to remove the dead wood from your life (whether it’s a person, possession, job or outdated belief). Then the solar eclipse repeats this theme of breaking down old patterns of behavior and forging a fabulous new course.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) You may feel pulled in opposing directions, as the solar eclipse and Jupiter shine a spotlight on your life/work balance (or lack of balance). If you pile up your professional plate (especially on Tuesday) then loved ones will feel neglected and disappointed.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Do you secretly long to change something in your life – but it never seems to be the ‘right’ time? Stop being stubborn, grab the goat by the horns and initiate overdue changes (especially involving family, travel or education) before someone else does it for you!

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) The solar eclipse and Jupiter fire up your finance zones, so don’t buy something that you really don’t need. Letting finances take their own course seems tempting but you need to keep up to speed. If you increase your financial literacy then it will pay off handsomely.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) The solar eclipse is in your sign, and it also links up with Chiron (the maverick healer) so there is the potential to experience the healing of a relationship, problem or ailment. Of course the more positive intention you pour in, the more successful the outcome.

ACROSS

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Tuesday night’s solar eclipse energises your humanitarian zone, and urges you to reach out to someone in need. You’ll find the more you extend your focus beyond your daily routine and shift into the realm of imagination and dreams, the more magical your week will be.

THE LAST WORD

PLAYING THE TRUMP CARD Richard O’Leary says our pollies should be worried about what’s happening in US politics.

Y

ou’re fired! This is what many American voters are telling the political establishment during the early stages of the race for the Presidency of the United States. It’s only fitting they are using the expression Donald Trump made famous in his reality TV show The Apprentice, considering he has become one of the biggest benefactors of this discontent. For those of you who don’t follow politics in the “Land of the free’ two outsiders have turned the accepted norms on their head in the early primaries – the polls in each state which decide who will become the Republican and Democratic candidates for the Presidency. Trump, who was considered a clown by most of his opponents when he put up his hand for the Republican Party, is being taken more seriously after establishing a big lead over his

play book - they have a simple pitch to voters – “We are not them!” In all likelihood, Sanders will probably fall short, and sooner rather than later. While if Trump wins the Republican nomination he will be hard pressed to withstand the momentum of Clinton trying to become the first female President of the United States. But that discontent will still be there, just bubbling along, and at some point that pressure will have to be released. In many ways, Australia had its own version of this phenomenon in the last federal election when the Palmer United Party harnessed the protest vote. That experiment has failed – but those who voted for Clive and his party haven’t gone away, they are just waiting for the next big thing. Imagine someone who had deep pockets and credibility…Dick Smith anyone? roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

competitors. While Bernie Sanders, a socialist who spent his honeymoon in the Soviet Union has collectivised the votes of disaffected Democrats to turn what was supposed to be the coronation of Hillary Clinton, into something of a contest. Why has this happened? Americans are cranky. Real cranky. More than 70 per cent of them think their country is headed in the wrong direction, with its massive wealth gap which keeps getting wider, its snailpaced economic growth and its low wages which seem like they’ll stay that way for ever and a day. Many of them blame the political establishment for getting them into this mess – those professional politicians with the perfectly coiffed hair, and the sound bites which have been just as carefully snipped and styled. Which is why Trump and Sanders stand out – they have thrown away the
