t has been said that democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried from time to time.” Winston Churchill was right, democracy is far from perfect, but when you compare it to what else is on offer, it looks pretty good. In Australia, we are particularly fortunate to have a system that provides relatively stable government. It’s easy to take it for granted, but you only have to look at what’s happening elsewhere to feel grateful for what we have. A good way of showing that gratitude will be to vote in next Saturday’s local government elections – and in this edition you get to meet the four candidates for mayor. Also this week, you get to see what inspirational sailor Jessica Watson is doing with herself these days, take a cruise to Kangaroo Island and test drive the new Audi Q7. And there’s plenty of property including a close look at Coolum. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

PLAIN SAILING

Jessica Watson became a household name through her sailing exploits – but she says the best is yet to come. WHERE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST DO YOU LIVE?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? I don’t know I really have just one – I might save it for later in life!

In the last few years I’ve been studying in Melbourne but I always love coming home to the Coast. I’ve lived in Buderim, Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

FIRST JOB?

There’s a lot of days that have been pivotal, but maybe none more than the day when I was 12 or 13 and I realised I wanted to make a positive impact on the world. I was somehow audacious enough to believe I could, and for some reason I decided that sailing solo around the world would be a good way to start. The day I told my sister what I wanted to do was also a huge day; there was something about saying it out loud that made it real.

I was a dishy at Fish On Parkyn. It was hard work but a lot of fun and helped pay for a few of my early sailing adventures. These days I love going back and enjoying the amazing food rather than washing up!

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’ve just finished my undergraduate study and started an MBA with the Australian Institute of Management. I’m working with a marine startup and community website, Deckee.com. The role is a great new challenge and an opportunity to bring the boating community’s word of mouth culture online. I’m also enjoying a few writing projects this year and I am a youth representative for the UN’s World Food Programme. I love sailing more than ever, but it’s more of a hobby these days as I find new ways to challenge myself.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? I suppose it would be the friendships I didn’t put the time into maintaining.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? It’s not very dramatic, but I’m very proud of how much I’ve grown and learnt in the last few years. People tell me not to change, but I think it’s wonderful how much I’ve changed and I hope that I can change and grow much more.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Mum, Dad, my big sister Emily who’s currently off working on boats in amazing parts of the world, little sis Hannah who’s beautifully creative and Tom, who’s starting his geology Honours year and is definitely the favourite kid. I’m also very lucky to have to have a much wider supportive ‘family’; I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve so many wonderful people around me!

FIRST CAR? I was very spoilt: a Mini Cooper.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? The protected southerly end of Mooloolaba Beach and the breakwater.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Ending a day without having achieved something.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS?

I like to impress them with a few of our great hidden little cafes, and then fresh prawns at the Mooloolaba Spit.

Always tick something off the list, even if it’s just something fun. I like to add things like hanging out with mates and reading to my lists, so they aren’t neglected.

A stack of textbooks and a novel called Napoleon’s Last Island.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

More flights earlier and later in the day out of the Sunny Coast airport would be a big help. It would also be great to see a lot more sailing on the Coast. Sorry, that was two things!

To remember to let big moments sink in. You can work for years to achieve something, so don’t let it flash by when you actually make it.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m on the water with friends, at the dinner table with family or walking by myself by the water.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t feel like you need to commit to anything that doesn’t feel 100 per cent right. Trust yourself, you’ll know what the right thing to do is.

COVER STORY

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

The four candidates vying to be mayor of the Sunshine Coast share their visions for the region’s future. Compiled by Richard O’Leary.

I

n just over a week the voters will have delivered their verdict on who our local government leaders will be for the next four years. This shapes up as the most important poll in decades as our economy changes, our population grows and the pressure increases on our built and natural environments. One player in particular will have a crucial role in steering this region through the opportunities and challenges ahead – the Mayor of the Sunshine Coast. This week we talk with the four people who have put their names forward for the job.

MARK JAMIESON – 57, current Mayor, previously had a 30-year career in chief executive and senior executive roles. Lives in Buderim. What is the region’s biggest challenge? There are two. Firstly, getting the Federal and State governments to shoulder their responsibilities and deliver long overdue improvements to our roads, rail and public transport. Secondly, we have to ensure our outstanding natural assets and environment are preserved as they are the cornerstone of our region and cannot be undermined. What is the one thing you can absolutely guarantee if you are elected? 12 My Weekly Preview | March 11, 2016

12.indd 1

That ratepayers can be assured their council will be in safe hands. I will continue to ensure our council remains one of the strongest and most financially sustainable in Queensland – if not Australia. What are the top three things you will deliver in the first year if elected as mayor? Completion of Council’s 15 megawatt grid connected solar farm – so Council will be offsetting 100 per cent of its electricity needs with energy from renewables. Secure a commitment from the Queensland Government to appropriate mechanisms to protect our inter-urban break. Have the first stage of the funding in the council budget for my commitment to deliver $30 million over four years to improve council’s sport, recreation, performance and community facilities. What’s your position on the council’s plan to expand the airport? I am committed to seeing it delivered by Christmas 2020. This is an outstanding asset which I want to see contribute more to our region’s prosperity. Suggestions by the Greens that it will cost ratepayers another $200 on their rates and that passenger numbers have declined in the last two years are lies – we will engage an equity partner whose investment will cover the cost of the expansion. Independently monitored passenger numbers show our airport is one of the fastest growing airports in the country. What do you think the number one transport priority for the Sunshine Coast should be? Right now, for our local residents on a day to day basis, it needs to be fixing the Mooloolah River interchange, given the new public hospital is due to open within the

next year. What’s your view on party politics in council elections? There is no place in local government on the Sunshine Coast for political parties. Mayors and councillors from a political party are beholden to party policies and accountable to their party executive first – not the community. We don’t need a council that is dictated to by Brisbane, Canberra and Hobart and can’t get along with other levels of government because of differences in party ideology. Would you support Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale splitting from the Sunshine Coast Council area? No I do not and our Council has a unanimous position on this matter. The north branch of the Maroochy River rises in the hills around Eumundi. I do not want to see an important part of the region’s most significant river system transferred to another council that has no historical connection with this waterway.

ALISON BARRY-JONES – 60+, previously served seven years in local government including Mayor of Maroochy Shire and the chair and executive director of a number of boards and associations. Lives in Verrierdale. What is the region’s biggest challenge? Overcome political constipation which has left the Coast

languishing for decades without vital infrastructure. I would harness a united strength and expertise of all community leaders, consolidate our collective vision, prioritise and tenaciously confront, with solid facts and lucid argument those who can deliver. In other words fight the necessary fight. What is the one thing you can absolutely guarantee if you are elected? I will guarantee transparency, strong thought leadership balanced by, and based on, a platform of community engagement. What’s your position on the Council’s plan to expand the airport? I have concerns with the costly level of the upgrade. I do believe we need to lengthen the runway and enhance passenger service facilities. However it is not operating anywhere near capacity and every economic guru guest speaker (including the CEOs of current providers Virgin and Jetstar) say they can put on more flights any time if we have the demand, and to concentrate on Bruce Highway upgrade and city centre if we want increased visitations and economic vitality. What do you think the number one transport priority for the Sunshine Coast should be? In the interim increased bus services. Longer term the rail transport. Reducing heavy traffic off our roads is necessary and people need to be able to move easily and comfortably to centralised locations for business, shopping or pleasure. What’s your view on party politics in council elections? I don’t like the idea of party politics in local government. We have it already; we are not silly and see it already exists. At least the Greens are open and honest about it and have been myweeklypreview.com.au

8/03/2016 9:37:15 AM

COVER STORY

motivated by concerns rather than greed, power and control. Would you support Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale splitting from the Sunshine Coast Council area? Why do you have that position? I have a solid view that these areas to remain intact within Sunshine Coast Council. The EDV community believe they are being denied their right to undergo the legitimate democratic process to investigate the merits or not of this longstanding argument. It is an ongoing festering issue that must be addressed. I believe it would be democratic to open discussion between the executive of both Noosa and Sunshine Coast councils to do the SWAT analysis. Something must be done as it is corroding the fabric of the local community.

TONY GIBSON – 62, has been a manager, business and leadership coach, worked for Queensland Government for 35 years. Lives in Marcoola. What is the region’s biggest challenge and how will you meet it if elected? The impacts of the growing population and climate change are directly related to our prosperity, lifestyle and wellbeing aspirations. I will seek input into developing a framework managing population levels and retaining farms and nature with community, business and relevant experts providing advice. What is the one thing you can absolutely guarantee if you are elected? I will lead a significant culture change and make democracy work for you. As mayor, I will reintroduce into the

Sunshine Coast Council a committee structure to enable public discussion and debate of issues before recommendations are made to a full council meeting. What are the top three things you will deliver in the first year if elected as mayor? Establish new governance arrangements with a committee structure and certain key advisory committees containing community and business representatives. Establish a body to review and report on the performance, functions and roles of the council receiving submissions from business and community groups. Consult, collaborate and then implement a Building a Progressive Region Strategy 2025 working with community, business interests and other stakeholders. What’s your position on the current council’s plan to expand the airport? The Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion business case does not stack up on economic, social, cultural and environmental grounds. The passenger numbers have actually dropped on an annualised basis at the airport. Rate payers will be slugged servicing a debt for a white elephant contributing over $200 a year each. The airport only uses 10 per cent of its capacity. The Brisbane Airport third runway completion by 2020 will mean there will be excess capacity close by. Boeing will supply Virgin with the 737 MAX aircraft which will extend the range by 500 kilometres. No new runway is required. What do you think the number one transport priority for the Sunshine Coast should be? The Greens strategy is to develop integrated, efficient, safe and out of hours public transport services with fast rail, light rail and electric buses. The duplication of the rail to Nambour is number one. We need to reduce congestion, emissions and work to a long term view focussing on public transport. What’s your view on party politics in

council elections? Party politics have existed since the 1980s on the Coast and candidates get assistance from LNP or Labor in many cases even though they do not advertise this. The Greens are being honest and leading with values such as social justice and ecological sustainability which help improve the democratic process. Would you support Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale splitting from the Sunshine Coast Council area? As mayor, I would support a democratic process to get the determination of the people. An independent change commissioner review of the merits of a boundary change would therefore be supported.

RON GREEN – 56, a fourth-generation Sunshine Coaster who runs an earthmoving and sawmilling business. Lives in Maleny. What is the region’s biggest challenge and how will you meet it if elected? Representation, unite and build pride. Where council operatives have divided communities to get what the council wants has caused extensive damage. Reuniting communities a big challenge. Also to bring responsible, respectful representation via representative democracy, where the individual, the family and small business are heard. Fair and balanced local government. What is the one thing you can absolutely guarantee if you are elected? We will not have a quasi-dictatorship. Arrogance will be replaced with compassion and reason.

What are the top three things you will deliver in the first year if elected as mayor? Community engagement, openness and accessibility. As mayor I will have 10 divisional reps to bring the mayor closer to the residents. I will prompt councillors to have eight community reps. This is to overcome the shortcomings of the Super Council, which is representation. Which of council’s major projects would you junk? Council taking a community’s ANZAC Memorial Park against the wishes of the community. This is tyranny and a national disgrace. Parking meters, unless wanted by this region. Rethink the flooding of the Coast with refugees, it has not worked well in Europe, if the region does not want this, it should not happen. What do you think the number one transport priority for the Sunshine Coast should be? Free 24-hour transport to drop-in centres or men’s sheds for the downtrodden. Also flexi-link. We need to take responsibility, for many residents there is no future on the Sunshine Coast. Budget and employment figures are shamed by drugs, homelessness, crime, depression, mental illness and high suicide rate. What’s your view on party politics in council elections? The Greens are at least honest. It is what is going on behind the scenes that is of concern. I do not like political party involvement at any level. Some parties are divisive and use community division to get the party way. The role of a party is the subversive control of the representative. Would you support Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale splitting from the Sunshine Coast Council area? If they have approximately 70 per cent local to that area support, yes. Why should they live in servitude − this is not a dictatorship. Oppressive governments destroy the foundation of our society, offending residents with arrogance, secrecy and disrespect, they are destructive and need to be removed.

POSTPONED Wishlist fundraising event, Run Sunshine Coast, has been postponed until 2017. The charity made the announcement late last week stating an inability to find a suitable location and date to support the growth of the event. In the past two years the run has raised more than $200,000 for the foundation. Wishlist chief executive Lisa Rowe is calling on the community to support the event next year as it is assisting in sourcing $1.4 million dollars to support the Child Development Service.

PLANT A TREE The community can help restore the endangered wetland habitat at Doonan Creek Environmental Reserve by planting fruiting trees this month for visiting birds from Papua New Guinea and SouthEast Asia. Council’s Environmental Operations manager Chris Allan says more than 300 trees will be planted. “Many coastal wetland habitats such as the Doonan Creek reserve are valuable refuge and seasonal feeding and breeding grounds for birds moving across the landscape as well as those travelling from afar.’’ The tree planting will take place on March 17 from 8am. To book, visit the Community Hub on council’s website.

Not-for-profit groups that make a contribution to the community are being encouraged to apply for Stockland’s 2016 Community Grants program before March 14. Sporting groups, P&Cs and other not-forprofit organisations can apply for individual grants of up to $1,000. Grants will be assessed on Stockland’s key sustainability criteria including health, education, community connection and biodiversity. More than $330,000 has been distributed to 361 groups across Australia since the annual program launched in 2014.

RELAY FOR LIFE Residents and businesses are being called on to support the annual Kawana Relay for Life which is set to be held on the weekend of May 21-22 at Kawana Waters State College. School, community, business and public groups can now register their participation in the 18 hour event. “By taking part in Relay For Life, you can help us create hope for cancer survivors, hope for those who have lost loved ones, and hope for a cancer free future,’’ says volunteer David Ross. REVIEW

LAST STOP The Caloundra Transit Centre has gone into liquidation with the building’s lessees leaving the premises. Sunshine Coast Council last week confirmed the news but said the bus stop was still operating as usual. Seating is available outside the transit centre and passengers wanting to buy Go cards can do so at any 7-Eleven store. Council has alerted Translink – the organisation responsible for public transport. In a statement, council said it was considering its options with the Transit Centre building.

TOP OF THE CLASS Immanuel Lutheran College has ranked twelfth in Queensland’s Top 30 list of schools for 2015 OP results. The Buderim school was also the highest ranking school on the Coast with Matthew Flinders Anglican College coming in at 16 on the list. Immanuel’s class of 2015 produced the College’s highest number of OP 1-5s on record; almost twice the state average with 37.5 per cent achieving in this band.

183 MILLION

Marcoola has received a new timber deck thanks to Sunshine Coast Council’s capital works program. The deck is located at Beach Access 104 near the Marcoola Surf Life Saving Club. Infrastructure Services director Andrew Ryan said council had also upgraded the beach access to include concrete paths and a timber pathway onto the sand. The upgrade was funded as part of the $183 million works program.

WINNING START

Rugby league kicked off at the weekend with the Storm NYC Thunderbolts facing off against the Dragons in the National Youth Championships campaign. The Coastbased Melbourne team claimed a 44-24 victory. It marked the first time the team played for points in front of its new home and fans at Sunshine Coast Stadium. Lining up for their home debut were three local juniors wingers Nat McGavin and Louis Geraghty and interchange forward Lachlan Timm. The boys will take on the Titans this Saturday in another home game.

SMART COMMUNITIES Some of the sharpest civic leaders and technology experts from Australia and overseas converged on Caloundra last week for the inaugural 2016 Smart Communities Summit. The Unlocking the Smart City Code event unveiled new technologies that are being developed to make cities more liveable, workable and sustainable. Sunshine Coast Council chief executive Michael Whittaker says the three day summit provided the first opportunity within Australia for national and international leaders to reveal the amazing technologies that will drive our communities in the future. Keynote speakers hailed from Germany, the United States and across Australia including innovation and environmental science consultant, and 2015 Australian Business Woman of the Year, Dr Catherine Ball and Dr Lutz Heuser of Germany’s Urban Software Institute.

TRAVEL

The luxury ship offers 16 dining experiences To suggest I was trepidatious would be a stretch, because I’ve always been of the philosophy that a storm is invariably followed by calm in life. As it turned out there was another storm − a literal one − delaying the ship’s departure from Sydney by about six hours. Ok, not a great start but I’ve been down this path before. Having been on a cruise ship with a force 10 gale and norovirus back in 2008, I have something of a feel for what can go wrong when trapped with 1500 or more people on the high seas.

Pacific Eden’s top deck pool

SMOOTH SAILING After a stormy start, P&O’s Pacific Eden cruise redeems itself. By Glenn Cullen

I

f, on or around December 28 last year, you’d been sitting back and reading a newspaper you would have come across a tale of a fateful

trip. It didn’t start in a tropic port but it went to one.

Yet reports from P&O’s Pacific Eden were anything but sunny. The 12-day round trip from Sydney to Cairns earned the monikers of being a floating disaster ship and worse than a one-star hotel. The scathing comments and banner

headlines had come after an estimated 60 of the 1500 passengers on board were hit with a gastrointestinal virus and several others complained of dirty facilities and indifferent staff. Less than two weeks later I was scheduled to get on board this very ship.

Cape Du Couedic Lighthouse at Kangaroo Island

It was no happy trip but the staff, that time on the Holland America Line, were flawless. And after a less than ideal lead-up for the Pacific Eden this time around, things did get considerably better on the eight-night, four-port cruise. Travelling south from Sydney and stopping at Eden it was all smooth sailing. The small coastal town, the last of any significance on the New South Wales coast before the Victorian border, is still finding its feet as a cruise ship port; pottering round the town, a visit to the whaling museum and local beaches

were the best things on offer at the hamlet, which only has a population of around 3000. Mornington Peninsula is and was a different story. While also new as a cruise destination it is already an extremely popular summer spot for Victorians, with beaches, dolphin swimming, wineries, tours of the popular Sorrento and fine dining on offer. We chose an excursion to the Peninsula Hot Springs ($90), about an hour’s coach drive from the port. It was a relaxing few hours spent flitting from hot

and cold pools to the Turkish steam bath in a stunning bushland setting. The next stop of Portland had the advantage of being one where the ship could dock (as opposed to getting tender boats from the ship) and we picked the Princess Margaret Rose Caves tour and Glenelg River Cruise ($140). The former was a fascinating and complex cave system on the South Australian border, the latter quite frankly a bit ho-hum after already spending plenty of time in a far superior sea-faring vessel. Kangaroo Island is definitely the trip’s jewel and a destination you want to make the most of your time at. So much so, the excursions tend to book out in advance. Australia’s third-largest island behind Tasmania and Melville, we probably should have chosen the full nine-hour tour ($190) but figured our kids wouldn’t thank us for it, so instead went for an edited highlights trip ($86) of around four hours. Plenty of time was spent on the bus, with a short pit stop in town and at the Cape Willoughby Lighthouse in what was still an interesting half day. It’s a fascinating place for wildlife and history and a top tourist destination in its own right − rendering our limited

time there almost a frustration. And the rest of the time? It was spent doing the kind of things you would expect on a cruise − sitting by the pool, eating, enjoying the odd drink, eating, seeing shows, eating, playing bingo and trivia, eating and occasionally hitting the gym. Every now and then we enjoyed something to eat. There were plenty of other pluses on this trip, including outstanding value for money − we paid under $4000 (excluding alcohol and shore excursions) in the peak holiday period for two adults and two children. The recent refurbishment of the ship was classy; the new Pantry dining area had a great selection of food styles and the Dragon Lady and Salt Grill − two restaurants you can pay to upgrade to − were excellent. Disappointments? There were a few. The Italian restaurant Angelos wasn’t worth the upgrade, we got some wafts of smoking near restaurants from time to time and the draining of the main pool was rather inopportune on a pictureperfect sea day. But, all in all, my experience was far from the “floating disaster ship” tag the Pacific Eden got lugged with back in December. Well, that’s my tale anyway.

AWARDS UNCOVER YOUNG TECH TALENT

S

tudents in years 10 to 12 across the Sunshine Coast are putting their thinking caps on and their creative powers to the test in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. The inaugural competition gives students the opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas and benefit from an entrepreneurial mentoring program, which will be run for the top 12 finalists by local business incubator Spark Bureau. While there’s more than $20,000 worth of prizes up grabs for students and their schools, Telstra area general manager Kris Carver says the long-term stakes are much higher. “The Sunshine Coast is a great region that’s fostering its talent and really looking to show young people new ways of thinking, so that’s why we’re bringing these awards to this region,” he says. “By doing this we can showcase future opportunities to youngsters in a fun and innovative way, and they can take their ideas and their thoughts and really take it to the next level. “As Telstra is moving from a traditional telecommunications company to a technology company it is

important that we support an environment where innovation and new ways of thinking are fostered. “With our aspirations set high, it is imperative that we encourage the younger generations with programs such as the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards

to think beyond today to what is possible tomorrow.” Youngsters have until March 14 to submit their entries. Carver says students are being encouraged to think about innovation and technological ideas with the

potential to change any industry: “from prosthetic legs through to lawn mowing”. “We don’t want to put any boundaries on this; we want to hear ideas and see where they can take it,” he says. Students will prepare written and video submissions and a presentation, and will be mentored according to a set of judging criteria before presenting their idea to a panel of judges. What wonderful tech creations will the Sunshine Coast’s students come up with? Watch this space.

ARE YOU OVERWHELMED? Taking on too much can impact your happiness, relationships and health, writes Jodi Chapman.

H

ave you become so busy that you don’t remember the last time you had downtime? As lives fill with work and children, homes get bigger and responsibilities build, finding time for balance becomes more of a challenge. There comes a time where you hit the limit of what your body and mind can handle before you tip the scales into overwhelm. So how do you know? When you find it becoming an effort to keep your thoughts, your reactions, and your words positive, or if you hear yourself complaining about your life, it’s time to look at where the pressure is coming from. Have you taken on too much responsibility? Are you making time for yourself? Are you sleeping enough? Are you eating well? Is there a negative influence coming from a relationship or a situation that you’ve

%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE

been struggling with? Being in an overwhelmed state takes its toll on your body and your mind − your ability to cope, get quality sleep, feel happy, and be the beautiful person you know you are with the most important people in your life. Allowing this situation to continue without being aware of its effect can change opportunities that may have come your way, and reduce the quality of your relationships with the people you love. If you feel the negative tone more than the positive in any given day, take some time to look a little closer and make some positive changes. Don’t wait for things to get better − be the change you want in your life. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

TECHNOLOGY

APP OF THE WEEK

ROCKETBOOK WAVE It took a little bit for us to get our head around this one. The Rocketbook Wave is a cloud-connectable microwave notebook. Yes, you read that right. When users write with a Pilot Frixion pen in this notebook, they can then erase all work using the microwave – which means you can reuse the same book. But before you do that, you can use image capture technology through the Rocketbook app to snap and send your notes to cloud services. This gadget is being funded through Kickstarter and for as little as US$27 you can pre-order a notebook and pen. Visit kickstarter.com.

PLANTSITTER

SCHOOLS A TO Z

For many parents, sending a child off to school is new territory. After all, it has been many years since the days of the old school yard. The Schools A to Z app is a great way for parents to keep up to date with the system and understand their children’s homework. Produced by the New South Wales Department of Education and Communities, the app has hundreds of definitions of commonly used maths and English terms, information on technology terminology, a spelling bee game and a times tables challenge, plus information on getting an assignment started.

It’s not the first gadget to the market that promises to help you communicate with your pot plants, but the PlantSitter promises to assist even those people who do not have a green thumb. Funded through Kickstarter, this technology will enable you to help keep your plants alive. The portable device connects plants to your smart device to relay information on what they require. You can also check on your plants from anywhere, at any time. Shipment is estimated for mid-2016. For more visit kickstarter.com.

Available free for IOS and android.

MY OPINION

STAR-CROSSED LOVERS

NO ‘SAFE’ PLACE FOR HATE

Falling behind on your celeb gossip? Never fear − Sami Muirhead is here to help.

Intolerance will only make our community more divided, says Alex McKean.

A

part from binge eating chocolate and hiding shopping bags in the boot of my car so my husband won’t see them, there are few things that make me feel as guilty as I do when I read celebrity gossip. But life has been a bit crazy of late and I dropped my game. Shame on me. So here are the top three fascinating romances you need to get up to speed on, pronto! 1. Orlando Bloom is getting hot and heavy with Katy Perry. People! This is big news! They are destined to be a power couple trying to out-pout each other in loved-up selfies on Insty. No doubt their perfect pictures will not need filters and will show their buffed bodies and near-naked torsos. Orlando and the Californian Girl last week steamed up tropical jungle tracks in Hawaii as they trekked up a volcano path. I personally always hoped Miranda and Orlando would patch things up and give us all the gift of more genetically blessed kids. Have you seen Flynn? He is perfectly perfect. 2. Jerry Hall married Rupert Murdoch less than one week ago. I know. I found this a bit of a shock as well. That Aussie rich guy gets around town and collects wives faster than he does newspapers. Mick Jagger’s ex and the 84-year-old gazillionaire had many of their 10 children in the wedding party. Lachlan Murdoch, official hottie, was the best man for his dad and attended the posh

church with his own wife Sarah on his perfectly suited arm. We simply do not see enough of Sarah Murdoch. She was once at a radio awards night I attended and I was so convinced we should be lifelong buddies I followed her to the loo, and then waited outside her cubicle to confess my undying love for her. I even asked for a photo as proof of our new friendship. In the loo! Not cool, people! Sarah suggested we exit the ladies and have a picture away from the sewage system. We had a total of seven minutes together, from stalking to selfie. And in that selfie, Sarah has a definite look in her eyes − sheer panic. 3. The juiciest celebrity couple of 2016 is my all-time favourite gossip story. Yes, all-time favourite. I loved when Charlie Sheen was in his full glory of drinking tiger blood with his angels and telling the world he was winning. I also loved when Katie left couch-jumping, stark-raving-mad Tom Cruise. And who could forget the public fights between Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck? They were good times when ‘Jenny from the Block’ was publicly screaming at Batman. But the gift to us all this year is the union of Mariah Carey and James Packer. Pariah! Goodie! Yes, they really are getting married. It just may break the Internet.

T

he politics of ignorance, and unreasoning hatred of all things connected to Islam, is intruding into the Council elections to be held on March 19. The average elector, however, would be forgiven for not realizing this is the case. Orchestrating the campaign is an innocuously named group called Sunshine Coast Safe Communities (SCSC). It is difficult to see how anyone could take exception to a group genuinely seeking to make our communities safer, or the involvement of such a group in the local Council elections. It is only when you drill down into precisely what SCSC has to say about what is endangering our community that the picture becomes genuinely disturbing. These ‘safe communities’ groups have sprung up all over the country, seemingly inspired by far-right organisations throughout the USA and Europe. The SCSC website states that SCSC is an “activist group” that focuses on preventing “destructive human behavior” driven by “extreme ideologies” and “dangerous cultural beliefs”. But trawling through the posts on the SCSC Facebook page and associated website − an unpleasant task − leaves the reader confused. As recently as February 2016, posts on the SCSC Facebook page have relied on a quote from far-right Dutch

politician Geert Wilders, spread confected alarm about the prospect of a “white genocide” and responded to the debate about the Safe Schools Coalition’s anti-bullying program with the puzzling remark that “soon it will be compulsory to be gay”. The page does appear to have a moderator − if such a description can be applied to an individual who also has no compunction about allowing hate speech from commenters, and engaging in it themselves. That individual is happy to call for the immediate termination of tenure for politicians who call for drug decriminalisation, bizarrely on the basis that doing so is contrary to the Australian Constitution. The irony, presumably lost on the ‘moderator’, is that the Constitution is the document which guarantees the tenure of our politicians, regardless of the shrill complaints of extremists. Normally I am the first to say we should allow the likes of SCSC to flourish in all of their dottiness. Where I depart from this principle is when groups espousing such extreme views dress themselves up in the sheep’s clothing of ‘safe communities’ and seek to influence the outcome of elections to further their hate-filled agenda. It’s incumbent upon candidates who’ve been publicly endorsed by SCSC, including Mayor Jamieson, to inform themselves of what it stands for, and publicly reject that endorsement and denounce the extreme views.

ast year smaller companies clearly outperformed their larger brethren, as investors struggled with the lack of growth opportunities for largercapitalisation stocks. The prospects for many larger capitalisation stocks are challenging, but there are attractive opportunities among emerging companies. Here I highlight a number of sectors with structural and/or cyclical drivers that offer significant potential in 2016 and beyond.

OUTDOOR MEDIA – Digitisation and structural growth. Australian outdoor media remains in a strong growth phase (net revenue was up 16 per cent in 2015). This was a result of the digitisation of

WELLNESS – Tapping into China’s appetite for ‘clean and green’. A range of Australian consumer products are benefitting from a combination of strong category growth (such as vitamins), as well as the ‘Brand Australia’ theme driving astonishing growth in demand from Chinese consumers for premium quality brands and products. After numerous health scares − combined with broader environmental concerns − there is a lack of trust among the Chinese of locally produced consumables, which benefits Australian producers given their clean and green reputation. This theme is still in its infancy and will underpin a seismic shift in the outlook for some consumer product companies.

provide direction. As global equity markets soften, large-scale fund managers are exposed to falling funds under management. This means declining earnings are inevitable. Within

this sector, I prefer to focus on managers where investment flows can still provide the greatest potential gains. TECHNOLOGY – Focus on recurring revenue and growth. We continue to focus on attractively priced recurring revenue businesses for our preferred technology exposure. CONTRACTORS – Doing it tough, but picking winners can pay off. The crash in oil and iron ore prices has seen resources capital expenditure largely dry up. We focus on pockets of growth in the contracting sector, including telecommunications, road and rail infrastructure and facilities management.

“Focus on recurring revenue and growth.”

FEEL-GOOD DUO GRACE SOLBAR STAGE Sunshine Coast musicians Pete Allan and Chris Flaskas are joining forces to liven up Maroochydore’s Solbar stage. A native of Noosa, Allan’s summery blend of effortlessly cool vocals and hypnotic, swaying rhythms are the musical epitome of the paradise he grew up in.

With an irresistible funk undertone, his new single ‘Treading Water’ is feel-good music and sets the pace for his next batch of songs, which are due for release later this year. Multiinstrumentalist Chris Flaskas is the perfect musical accompaniment to Allan. The

SUPPORT THE ORIGINALS Sunshine Coast residents and visitors are being urged to support the future of live music to ensure its longevity in the region. The not-for-profit group East Coast Originals is holding a fundraiser to support its Peregian and Cooroy Originals events. Hosted on the second and fourth Sunday of every month, the music events present four live bands at community parks. The Originals, which attract more than 1500 people each month, depend on the financial support of local businesses, raffle ticket sales and one-off donations. Peregian Originals volunteer Jade Keilty says financial support is important. “What a lot of people at the Originals don’t realise is that their $5 worth of raffle tickets really goes straight back to the event, to pay for the bands, the sound and to run the Originals each month,’’ she says. The fundraising event will be held at the Peregian Beach Hotel on Friday, March 18 from 7pm. It’s a free event with a gold coin donation on arrival.

28-year-old is known for his uplifting style of music and uses an array of traditional instruments, including the didgeridoo and the Hawaiian-style lap steel slide. The pair will perform at Solbar on Sunday, March 13. Free entry. For more visit solbar.com.au.

PREPPING FOR YOUR BIG DAY Blushing bride: a step-by-step guide to looking radiant at your wedding FITNESS The countdown is on, so it’s time to get healthy and kick off your fitness regime in the lead up to your wedding. Consult with a personal trainer or establish your own routine. Incorporate cardio, weights and a spiritual form of exercise such as yoga or pilates.

HAIR Invest time in your hair to ensure it is radiant and healthy. Start using a weekly treatment at home and consult with your hairdresser to discuss the colour you want for your big day. It can take a number of sessions to achieve the desired look, especially if you are working towards a lighter colour. Taking recommended doses of Vitamin B can also assist in achieving shiny, healthy hair.

MAKEUP Speak to cosmetic specialists about the latest trends and looks before meeting with your makeup artists. It’s also a good idea to browse through magazines and take tearsheets or a lookbook to your first consultation.

The look

SKIN It’s time to up the ante on your daily beauty routine. Cleanse and moisturise daily and apply a weekly rejuvenation mask. If your budget allows, schedule in regular facials, skin needling or microdermabrasion sessions. If you are concerned with fine lines, talk to an expert about wrinkle treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers. As the wedding draws closer, book into a day spa or clinic for a skin exfoliation treatment to prep your body for a spray tan, which is best done one or two days before your wedding.

YOU’RE ENGAGED – NOW WHAT?

P

lanning your wedding can be stressful, and brides-to-be can be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed. There is so much to think about. Where should you hold the ceremony and which venue is best? Will you have a cocktail and canapé affair or the formal three-course meal? And not to mention finding that perfect dress. One of the first things you should do once you have agreed on a date is set a budget. Once that’s sorted, it’s time to start planning. Here’s a checklist to get you started…

SIX TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE Hold engagement party Book reception venue Book ceremony venue and priest/ celebrant Book honeymoon Decide on theme and style Book entertainment Choose bridal party attire Choose and order wedding cake Book wedding cars

Choose an MC for the reception Purchase wedding dress and wedding rings Book photographer, makeup artist, hairdresser and florist

THREE TO SIX MONTHS BEFORE Send wedding invitations Choose and purchase bridal accessories (veil, headpiece, jewellery, lingerie and shoes) Decide on centrepieces for reception Order bonbonniere

tip

Here are some great ways to reduce costs… • Have a weekday wedding • Serve wedding cake in lieu of dessert • Choose a cocktail theme instead of a sit-down meal • Make your own invitations • Opt for flowers that are in season • Get married outside of wedding season.

Set to sparkle

Looking for the perfect engagement and wedding rings? When selecting a ring remember to educate yourself on the four C’s – cut, clarity, colour and carat.

ONE MONTH BEFORE Confirm final menu choice for reception Write or choose vows Select ceremony and reception music Hold hens, bucks, kitchen tea events Meet with photographer to discuss options and locations Have dress and suit fittings Have makeup and hair trials

This stunning white gold ring is from Cotton Tree’s NY2K. The jewellery specialists can handcraft a ring to your specific requirements.

GET THE LOOK Choosing the perfect dress can be as stressful as it is exciting. Here are some hints on selecting the right style for your body shape.

Dare to bare

tip With wedding dresses ranging in price from $1000 and upwards to $15,000, it’s important to take good care of your special gown. Bundilla Dry Cleaners suggests the use of preservation boxing once you are finished with your dress. These boxes come with acid-free tissue paper which surrounds the gown to ensure no penetration of moist air or daylight.

This year’s breakout trend is the revealing wedding dress that accentuates the bride’s shoulders, back and décolletage, with, or without, the addition of tasteful cutouts and peekaboo lace. The effect is simply stunning.

BRIDAL STYLE – SIX WEDDING TRENDS OF 2016 6. Blushing beauty

Like with interior styling, mood lighting is going to play a huge role in weddings. The age-old fairy lights are back but are being teamed with rustic chic lanterns and contemporary pendants.

The gorgeous combination of metallic, blush and copper has not been confined to interior design. This pretty and sophisticated look is making its way into the wedding world. Add some shimmer, glitz and glam to your invitations and decorations.

Brides are relenting on the set-styled look for bridesmaids. More and more bridal party members will be given the opportunity to choose a dress that flatters their body shape. Visit local boutiques and scour their racks for unique designers and looks.

2. Party pampering Brides are looking for ways to reduce stress on their big day, hence the introduction of combined services.

5. Flowers IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

These unfrosted cakes are stunning and when beautifully decorated will create a unique centrepiece for your big day.

Traditional, structured bouquets are giving way to a natural and relaxed approach to floral styling. Don’t feel confined to one colour or style. Mix-andmatch bouquets and centrepieces are on the rise with wedding stylists giving the nod to the trend.

isiting New York City recently for the first time in a few years, it was clear that one thing, above all else, had changed about our favourite city. The familiar Lincoln Town Cars and Cadillacs that, for decades, have been commonplace around Manhattan have

all but disappeared from the busy streets of Gotham City. And they’ve been replaced not with smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles as you might expect. Rather, their role as the city’s up-market taxis and limos has been filled by giant, hulking SUVs – like Cadillac’s Escalade and its General

Motors-built stablemates. It’s extraordinary to think that these massive, fuel-guzzling monoliths have become the preferred mode of limousine transport in the world’s most congested central business district. Yet it’s also a measure of how pervasive the SUV trend has become.

And also evidence of the levels of plushness and pampering these socalled “off-roaders” have attained. They’re no longer smartly-styled, luxuriously-equipped pseudo offroaders. They’re fully-fledged luxury cars that happen to sit a bit higher off the ground, and offer more passenger and cargo space, than traditional limos. The thought kept coming back recently as we tested the latest member of this “tall limousine” brigade – Audi’s recently released second-generation Q7. The biggest and most capable machine in the German maker’s arsenal. And, surprisingly, also among the most refined. The Q7 has been an unqualified success for Audi – they’ve almost become commonplace around most Aussie cities over the past decade despite their imposing size and matching price tag. And it has paved the way for Audi to make a massive impression in the luxury SUV market with its smaller Q5 and Q3 models – both perennially near the top of their respective sales charts. When it first launched the original Q7 back in 2006, Audi brazenly showcased the vehicle’s off-road capabilities by continued page 42 >

<from page 40 driving a brigade of them across the Simpson Desert from one side of the continent to the other. Yet despite that impressive feat, and that impressive capability, few Q7s make it off the sealed bitumen. Perhaps that helps explain why Audi appears to have changed direction slightly with this latest iteration – it looks and feels even more car-like than before, with a sleeker, less macho appearance. It’s also the quietest and most refined SUV I can recall driving. Audi has stripped a hefty 240 kilograms off the previous model to give the new Q7 impressive driving dynamics – surprisingly nimble for such a sizeable vehicle. They also boast it delivers classleading levels of electronic safety and driver assistance systems – which have been tested and tweaked for Australian driving conditions, underlining the company’s goals for this new model Down Under. These functions include Active Lane Assist that will gently steer the Q7 back into its correct lane if it senses you drifting off course; as well as Active Cruise Control and the now-obligatory collision avoidance system that uses the

same radar system to avoid or mitigate nose-to-tail crashes. That’s complemented by a turn assist system that monitors oncoming traffic when you’re turning right (across traffic) at low speeds – stepping in to stop the vehicle if it senses danger. There are also warning systems to monitor side, rear and cross traffic while the big machine is being reversed – sensible precautions for vehicles which notoriously are hard to reverse. Inside, the Q7 is modern and efficient in its design, if lacking a bit of personality. The virtual instrument panel has become a feature of most new Audis that’s set a new standard for most competitors.

Based upon a vivid colour screen in the instrument binnacle, it’s is superb in its presentation and the depth of information it conveys – from comprehensive trip computer readouts, satellite navigation directions, vivid displays of your speed, range and consumption habits – right down to a little illustration if the car thinks you’re being too vigorous with the accelerator. If I was being hyper-critical I’d add that the dash layout is a bit bland – there’s a centrally-mounted display screen that pops up from the top of the centre stack, which despite its 8.3-inch dimensions almost looks a bit lost in the broad expanse of soft-touch dash material. But finishes and materials in the Audi cockpit are beyond reproach. While the new Q7 is slightly shorter and narrower than its predecessor, it’s roomier inside with cargo capacity ranging from 295 litres with all seats in use to almost 2000 litres with the second- and third-row seats folded flat. That means space for a full-sized family – or maybe a couple of well-fed travelling execs plus their luggage. Expect to see plenty of these in your neighbourhood pretty soon. And who knows, they might even make their mark in New York City as well.

AUDI Q7 3.0 TDI QUATTRO HOW BIG? Slightly shorter and narrower than before, with a more car-like appearance than the first Q7. But it’s huge inside with large, plump seat, masses of legroom and headroom and space for seven when required. HOW FAST? Seriously quick for a garden-variety vehicle of this size. It will reach the speed limit in 6.5 seconds – which is quicker than all but those specialised high-performance SUVs. HOW THIRSTY? Despite its silky power and impressive acceleration, it sips less than six litres for every 100km travelled. That’s better than most family sedans and matches plenty of tiny hatchbacks, thanks to reduced weight and fuelsaving technology. HOW MUCH? With a starting price of $103,900 it’s hardly cheap, but the Q7 represents striking value for money.

SLEEPING GIANT AWAKES Homebuyers and investors are taking notice of the opportunities in Coolum. Words: Dorothy Whittington. 1990s, and moved the area a notch or two upmarket, a trend supported by limited residential opportunities on the coastline around Pt Arkwright and Yaroomba and elite properties on the hills behind. The Hyatt was purchased by mining magnate Clive Palmer in 2011 and sadly the accommodation sector of the resort was suddenly closed in mid-2015 due to plans for a renovation. The township of Coolum has grown to serve the expanding population and now has substantial shopping centres as well as boutique shops and a buzzing café and restaurant scene.

N

orth of the Maroochy River, between Twin Waters and Noosa, Coolum was for decades a sleeping giant on the Sunshine Coast, but once aroused, it soon leapt to life. Originally accessed from the Bruce Highway at Yandina until a bridge went across the Maroochy River at Bli Bli in 1959, Coolum was distanced from early activity around Maroochydore and Mooloolaba and developed its own distinctive character, which it retains. Today, Coolum takes in Coolum Beach, a busy coastal township, south to Pt Arkwright, Yaroomba and Mt Coolum and west across the Sunshine Motorway to the former canefields of Yandina Creek. The land area of the statistical district is 3532 hectares with a population density of 3.66 people per hectare at the 2006 census, a figure influenced by large tracts of low-lying former cane land west of the highway. At the 2011 census there were 7,900 people living in Coolum Beach. Until the 1980s, it was a sleepy coastal township with little more than a

On the main coastal route, about 15 kilometres north of the Maroochydore central business district and the same distance again north to Noosa, Coolum has a lot to offer families. Housing ranges from long-established brick and tiles to mansions in coveted locations and everything in between, all protected by limited supply.

Harley Dale says the further strengthening of the market is good news. “The overall trend evident across both leading indicators is similar signalling that once the current (record) pipeline is exhausted, new home construction activity will soften. “This year will be another healthy one for detached house and multi-unit construction, but we won’t surpass the heights of 2015.

adverse consequences for confidence towards housing.’’ Total seasonally adjusted new home sales increased by 3.1 per cent in January this year. Detached house sales were up by 5.8 per cent while the sale of multi-units dropped by the same magnitude. In Queensland detached sales increased by an impressive 7.9 per cent leading the country’s growth.

THE WHAT’S WHAT OF THE HOUSING MARKET Detached housing – freestanding homes are a common type of property in Australia. Multi-unit – these developments consist of units, townhouses or the newly popular terrace housing. According to the HIA multi-unit dwellings are now a far more significant part of the new home building market than at any other point in Australia’s history. Around 20 years ago the medium and high density component of multi-unit construction accounted for around 5 per cent of total housing commencements. There was an incremental increase in the share accounted for by this type of dwelling through to around 2010. In 2014 this share reached around 25 per cent.

Well it’s like this - things are not looking too flash peeps. But spare a thought for the organisers of the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast. After weeks and weeks of epic waves now they hit a flat spell... bugger. In these conditions I think it fair to say those pesky Brazilians should win the day – let’s hope I am wrong. On a brighter note the positive thing about flat spells is we are always one day closer to some waves…yeah…I am just winging it on that line. Everyone seems to be planning their Indo assaults at the moment – Gland, Rote, North Sumatra, with the unfit ones heading to the Maldives for R & R with their partners. Whatever you are doing most of the airlines have increased their bag sizes to 3 metres allowing you to take a good quiver. Except Jetstar of course, go with them at your own risk.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bigger tides this week are producing some quality whiting on yabbies along Cotton Tree, and you can get oversize flathead on live baits along the Twin Waters bank. There are also mud crabs from Bli Bli to Eudlo. SURF: A terrific run of quality tailor have been caught off the textile sand walls at the entrance to the Maroochy River. You can get dart and sand whiting along Maroochy North Shore using worms and prawns. Alex Beach to Maroochy Beach is returning bream and dart on prawns. OFFSHORE: There have been unexpectedly good catches of snapper at The Gneerings just on dawn after heavy berleying. The Barwon Banks is best for pearl perch, snapper, rosy job fish and parrot, using pillies, squid and cut baits. FRESHWATER: Bass are responding to spinner baits and medium divers in Lake Macdonald with Mary River cod also showing up. Somerset has good reports of golden perch and bass on a variety of baits, and deep diving lures. While you can get jew on live shrimps. Don’t forget your red claw traps.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) With planetary emphasis in your contemplation zone, you’ll feel reflective. Use your imagination to solve problems and soar into realms of creativity. Personal projects are favoured on the weekend, when the terrific fire trine encourages you to tackle tasks with plenty of passion.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) The week starts with a relationship glitch but then Lady Luck is on your side mid-week and friendships are favoured, as you link up with pals from home and far away. You’re in the mood to help a loved one through a rough patch or cheer up a colleague.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) The more impulsive you are on Monday and Tuesday, the more disappointing the days will be. Shot-cuts will get you nowhere fast. Strive to be physically organised and mentally disciplined. The mid-week stars sharpen your problem-solving skills.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Reach out and help others, both with family and friends and your neighbourhood. The close community connections you foster now will prove beneficial in the future. The more you connect with loved ones, the more satisfying the week will be.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) The Jupiter/Pluto trine is fabulous for work, business and financial matters. Lady Luck is definitely on your side as you make positive changes and accept exciting new challenges. And, for some lions, an ambitious idea is set to boost your bank balance!

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Expect drama early in the week, when poor communication could disrupt a relationship. Two-way conversation is the secret to resolving difficulties. So keep the lines of communication open, and resist the temptation to be critical or judgmental of others.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Have you been burning the candle at both ends? You’ve got a lot of commitments on your plate but try to put aside some special ‘me time’ this week Libra. Solitude is soul food for you at the moment. When it comes to a frustrating family matter, avoid quick fixes.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) This week’s Jupiter/Pluto trine encourages you to broaden your horizons, expand your circle of influence, and make positive changes (both personally and further afield). But Scorpio is the sign of extremes, and you can have trouble winding down.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Are you ready, willing and able to capitalise on good luck? This week (courtesy of the mid-week Jupiter/Pluto trine) you’ll be given the opportunity to lead and/or influence those around you. Others are looking for you to come up with the goods so don’t disappoint!

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Pluto is moving through your sign, which boosts ambition. But it also ensures that – if you don’t play by the rules – then you will get caught. This week the Jupiter/Pluto trine gives you a welcome boost as you turn up the Capricorn charisma, win friends and influence people.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Your involvement with a club or organisation has others looking to you for inspiration. Avoid walking around in a daze though – you need to clarify your goals for the future. If you work out a firm direction forward, then financial luck is waiting in the wings.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) With the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Neptune in your sign, you’re the quintessential Piscean at the moment as your creativity and compassion are on display. Partnerships are given a boost, as Jupiter and Pluto increase optimism and help you reform a relationship.

THE LAST WORD

DOWN THE AISLE A trip to the supermarket reminds Richard O’Leary about the importance of learning life skills.

I

don’t think I’ve told anyone this story before. It was my second year at uni and I was living in my first share house in Bathurst, an ugly fibro thing which sweltered in summer and was so cold in winter you could see every breath. My flatmates were two young women, both studying to be teachers – one primary, the other early childhood. A couple of months had passed of us taking it in turns to cook dinner – just enough time for the truth to come out, in particular about me. “You know you don’t have to have the grill on high!” I looked at another plate of cremated pork chops I’d created and realised I didn’t know that. My mum and dad had cooked all my meals up until I left home, and my first year of uni was on campus so I just went

to the cafeteria during the week and ate two-minute noodles on the weekend. Why am I telling you this embarrassing story? Well, like most people I don’t want my kids to repeat the same mistakes I made. And no, I don’t mean burning pork chops – but not having the life skills to leave home when the time comes. That’s one of the reasons it was so rewarding last week to spend a morning with my seven-year-old son and his school mate at the local supermarket. As part of their education they get to learn real life skills, like how to go to the shops and buy food for the meals they would prepare the next day. I was merely the chaperone and watched as they worked out what to do. Once or twice they asked me for help, but I was on strict instructions to let them work it out themselves. Which they did. They found an able and willing shop assistant who very

graciously located many of the things they were looking for. I’m not sure this was exactly what was meant by doing it yourself, but it was resourceful if nothing else. When they’d marked everything off the list they paid for the food themselves – the only hiccup coming when they opened the complimentary movie cards at the checkout, forgetting that people in the queue behind them didn’t really care if the boys already had those cards or not. But I have to say the most overwhelming response by other shoppers to the boys’ excursion was joy – people couldn’t help but smile at a couple of cute kids getting excited about something we all grumble about. By the way, I’ve solved the problem with the pork chops – I became a vegetarian. Well, sort of, but that story is for another week. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
