OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
ashion on the Sunshine Coast tends to be a bit like the place itself; laid-back and without a hint of pretension. But that doesn’t mean the region doesn’t have something to say in the style stakes. In fact, a growing number of designers and models are making it big in the world of fashion. Sunshine Coast chic is about to become a thing – and that’s our cover story for this issue. Also this week, you get the chance to meet two Sunshine Coast blokes who think they’ve invented the perfect sunscreen, check out the facelift on BMW’s most popular car, and travel to Siberia for a holiday with a difference. As always there’s also plenty of socials, opinions, local news, life and beauty tips, things to do and people to see, along with all the latest from the real estate market on the Sunshine Coast. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
GUITAR HERO
Rock and blues guitar legend Kevin Borich is still rocking on after 45 years in the biz. After beating an aggressive cancer, he last year released the double album Totem, his first recording in 13 years. On April 1–2 he joins a stellar line-up at the Sydney Opera House for The Last Waltz Revisited. FIRST JOB?
YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
My first job was on my mum and dad’s 30-acre orchard 30 miles out of Auckland – Huapai NZ. You could hear the surf from Muriwai Beach on a real rough day – black sand and dangerous. My job was learning how to be an orchardist; we had apples, peaches, nectarines, pears, plums and some citrus.
Regrets – not my thing. I could edit out the real dumb actions, but one hopes to learn from one’s mistakes and this one has. Reaching for pies in skies? OK, you asked for it. If the world was as small as it is now back when I left NZ in the ‘60s, the sensible executive business directional decision would have been straight up, turn right for the USA. It’s a numbers thing in music – more people more financial success. But hey, who’s complaining? We have it made here.
FIRST CAR? My sister Zorina had a green Morris Minor. I took the hubcaps off to make it go faster round the dirt roads – (don’t tell her). My first was a Hillman, a real beauty, English racing green. It got written off on tour in Wellington by a council rubbish truck.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? When I look back at all the music I’ve written and recorded I’m very happy at what came out through me. People ask, which is your best CD? I go, hey, they’re like my children – you can’t do that!
FAVOURITE BOOK? Island by Aldous Huxley.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
Harlot’s Ghost by Norman Mailer.
Frustrations you say – my you are one, turning me inside out, upside down and sideways. Hang on while I get on your couch. Hmm. Easy – when I sometimes have electrical gear faults while performing – very frustrating, it’s like the wings falling off. Got another hour? I could list the petty – nah, I do yoga with Melissa, she’s a yoga and mindfulness teacher.
FAVOURITE SONG? I have one song for almost every occasion and mood – you’re not fair to all the others with a question like that!
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? My advice to myself: Be thankful for what you share, your family, your supporters and audience.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? We’ve been here just out of Maleny for 16 years, we sold our house in Bondi and headed for the hinterland mountains. It was great in Bondi for that time but later we wanted to be out of the city to have the space and clean air. My wife Melissa and I came to raise our three children, I have six children in total, two in Sydney from my first marriage and one lives in England, who we hope to have living in Australia soon.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Most days are great but when we got married – that would have to be tops. She’s a wonderful can-do girl and so easy on the eye.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THE SUNSHINE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Nothing, it’s very cool as it is.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS?
WHEN ARE YOU HAPPIEST?
There’s so many great places to show people here – Mary Cairncross Park has a wonderful rainforest walk, that’s where I took Joe Walsh when he stayed. There’s wonderful beaches, with coastal fringe towns, little mountain towns like Maleny, Montville Mapleton.
Every time I play and the people share my energy with my band cookin’, I’m doing what I love doing and the crowd is hooked, getting high on the sound and loving it. That’s when I know why I’m here. The other is with my wife and family.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Use it or lose it. Yoga is so damn good for you, an ancient remedy, just you, your mat and your own body weight, and meditation to calm the monkey that at times inhabits my mind. It’s all good work in progress. Meditation has been scientifically proven to be beneficial to one’s health.
TEA OR COFFEE? I have only one coffee a day – long black, one shot, big cup with a dash of oat milk.
NRL OR AFL? I follow Rugby Union – you grow up to be an All Black in NZ.

COVER STORY
DRESSED FOR SUCCESS
Our burgeoning local fashion industry is turning out designers and models making it on the world stage. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“There are so many local talents who can thrive on a national and even international level if they are given the right support and opportunity by the Sunshine Coast community”
IMAGE: The Sunshine Coast’s own Abbie Heath is establishing an international modelling career and is currently working in Korea. Image supplied Busy Models.
T
he early morning light shines through the studio window; the landscape of the Korean city of Seoul its background. Dozens of people hurry back and forth across the large space busying themselves with the task at hand. It’s going to be a particularly long day for 18-year-old Abbie Heath. There will be makeup, hair styling, clothes fittings with designers prodding, poking, commenting – and that’s all before the real work begins. The blonde beauty will spend hours in front of a camera striking pose after pose knowing full well that thousands of people will see, and possibly pass judgement, on the final images. At more than 7700 kilometres from the Sunshine Coast, Heath is a long way from home but it’s a life she is quickly adapting to, and a sacrifice she is willing to make for her future. “Modelling, like any profession, has its ups and downs,’’ she says. “The best thing about my job is definitely all the creative people I get to meet and work with. It’s amazing to collaborate with such passionate and inspiring people. “The travelling aspect is another perk of the job, travelling has always been something I have been passionate

about and modelling has given me so many wonderful opportunities to travel to work. However contrary to popular belief, modelling isn’t all glitz and glamour. “There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the public don’t see, like the long hours spent in a studio, the late night castings and uncertainty of when you’ll book your next job.” Heath first stumbled into the industry at the tender age of 13, by 16 she had secured the cover of famed French fashion publication, L’official magazine, and last November she featured in a Collette Dinnigan campaign for Vogue Australia. Today, she is working in Seoul – a vibrant city that has become her temporary home. With her Australian agency Busy Models securing representation for the teenager in Paris, London, Sydney, New York, Los Angeles, Germany and Japan, Heath’s career is on the rise. Fellow Coast teen Lakkari Kim is also on her way to also gracing the pages of glossy fashion magazines but for an entirely different reason.
As a TAFE Queensland East Coast graduate she was awarded a threemonth internship based in London working alongside respected designer Karl Donoghue. Kim never expected to win awards for her fashion designs when she began studying a diploma of fashion and yet she has turned heads with her flair for drama and futuristic designs. On her interest in fashion, Lakkari says she’s always been passionate about creating and drawing things and first started developing her sense of style when she began sewing in Year 7.
“The best thing about my job is definitely all the creative people I get to meet and work with. It’s amazing to collaborate with such passionate and inspiring people” “I guess my fashion style is kind of girly, but with an edgy unique look,” she says. Like many young people, Kim has high hopes of becoming an internationally-recognised name in the tough, yet lucrative, industry.
The global apparel and textile industry is an estimated $1.7 trillion business. According to 2012 figures from international industry network UnitedFashion, Australia’s clothing, textile and footwear industry is valued at close to $3 billion, with retail and wholesale sectors adding another $7.5 billion, and employing more than 200,000 people. The nation’s 2014 retail sales equalled $21,279 million and our total exports were valued at $359 million. The Sunshine Coast’s contribution to the industry is steadily evolving. In the past six years, 224 fashion students have graduated from TAFE Queensland East Coast and the region has produced some of Australia’s most successful designers including Holster and Hive Swimwear. It comes as no surprise to Jacinta Richmond – a woman who has her eye on the melting pot of designers, models and artists. When we speak, this self-proclaimed fashion fan is preparing for the ninth annual Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival to be held in Caloundra during October. Already she has signed a number of high profile designers on board. “So far we have confirmed Czarina Kaftans out of Melbourne, Indi Stone of myweeklypreview.com.au

the Sunshine Coast, German designer Opera… Sunflair, the highest selling swimwear company in the world. They only show with us and nowhere else in the world. Nicola Finetti has also confirmed. “It goes to show what the Sunshine Coast offers and the hard work that the team has put in.” In 2015, 25 designers were accepted into the festival and this year is shaping up to be bigger and better. It has become the perfect runway for emerging designers to showcase their collections in the company of those who are more established.
designs have been created after researching industry trends, forecasts and target markets. “The teachers are able to mentor and assist the students to create a collection that is ready to be sold at the end of the range. The garments will be of an industry standard and correctly costed and all the required tools such as look books and photo shoots are included in the exercise.” Araya says the education facility has produced many talented designers, some who have successfully gained employment in Sydney and Melbourne. The loss of good local designers is a
TAFE Queensland East Coast fashion teacher Jodie Araya Some of these emerging talents hail from the Coast’s own TAFE – an institution providing ample study opportunities according to Jodie Araya. Araya, whose career includes 13 years as a senior patternmaker and working at Sydney Fashion Week, is an Applied Fashion Design and Technology teacher at TAFE Queensland East Coast. She says it is a brilliant platform for young, budding designers. “The culmination of the advanced diploma is for the students to create a collection of their designs. These
sad reality of the fashion world but one that needs to be acknowledged more on the Sunshine Coast, Richmond says. “Our economy comes from the tourism dollar and everyone accepts that but the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival for example can be a tourist destination if supported. We self-fund it organically. “We have things that are recognised on the Sunshine Coast that contribute to its financial status such as sporting events enhancing tourism, music events, art… but nobody recognises on the ground level the passion that’s put into
the fashion industry. “Tourists go to the markets, what do they buy? A local designer.” Richmond believes students need to be mentored in business and marketing. There needs to be more recognition from the business and political community and the establishment of a larger community incubator that will attract interstate tourists, she says. “We have a wonderful partnership with the Sunshine Coast Plaza. They provide space for an incubator for students to display and sell their work and to gain valuable feedback from the public and customers. “The industry will always need more support. Consumers are beginning to support Australian made, but with the economy, it is very hard not to pass up a $4 T-shirt from Kmart. “Because of the price to produce in Australia, we must market buying Australian made and to make people aware of the conditions in a lot of the overseas factories.” The fashion industry is not without its pitfalls – an issue that is slowly being addressed on a global scale. Locally, the message is clear: support local designers and boutiques, which will help provide our younger residents with exciting career opportunities. Abbie Heath has plans to base herself in Sydney in a bid to further her career. “The fashion industry is a hard thing for many people to grasp, especially in a beachy, laidback community like the Sunshine Coast,’’ she says. “However I think that the more talent that arises, in terms of models, designers and photographers, the more seriously the industry seems to be taken. There are so many local talents who can thrive on a national and even international level if they are given the right support and opportunity by the Sunshine Coast community.” Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival – scff.com.au. GOING WITH THE FLOW IN CALOUNDRA A major drainage upgrade in Caloundra to help reduce flooding and protect the Pumicestone Passage is underway ahead of the council’s Bulcock Street upgrade, due to start this month. The upgrade includes a new underground pipeline and a custom built stormwater filter that will help prevent rubbish and sediment entering the waterways. Infrastructure Services acting director Tom Jamieson said the drainage improvements were a vital part of the overall Bulcock Street streetscape. Construction hours will be 6am–6pm Monday to Friday.
$500 MILLION
Mayor Mark Jamieson this week said the State Government neglected the Sunshine Coast with the release of its $500 million State Infrastructure Plan. While Jamieson welcomed the government’s commitments to fund intersection upgrades at Kawana Way and Nicklin Way near the new hospital, he said it was too little. “The Queensland Government’s own statisticians have identified the Sunshine Coast as one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland. Yet the State Government is not shouldering its responsibilities when it comes to critical state infrastructure like road, rail and public transport.”

5000 TURN OUT FOR TRIATHLON
More than 5000 participants lined up in the 24th annual Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival last weekend. The festival included a wide range of events including a one-kilometre Ocean Swim, Superkidz Caroline Steffen Triathlon, Special Tri and the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup. Swiss athlete Caroline Steffen, who now calls the Sunshine Coast home, took out first place over fellow Coast resident Kirralee Seidel in Sunday’s Olympic distant event, which included a 40-kilometre bike ride, 10-kilometre run and 1.5-kilometre swim. Deputy Mayor Chris Thompson has resigned from Sunshine Coast Council following a 12-year career. Mayor Mark Jamieson and councillors paid tribute to Thompson, who was first elected to Maroochy Shire as a councillor for Division 12 before becoming a Division 4 representative following council amalgamation in 2008. Thompson thanked the community for its support and said it had been an honour to serve constituents.
2300 WHEELY EXCITED KIDS
Sunshine Coast school kids rode their way to a new record for National Ride2School Day this year with 1945 students riding a total of 4,194 kilometres to school on March 4. The figure equates to a 51 per cent increase in participants compared to last year. Infrastructure Services acting director Tom Jamieson said the participation exceeded the council’s expectations. “Our goal was to have 10 per cent more kids riding to school than in 2015. Our TravelSmart team actually counted almost 2300 bikes, scooters and skateboards at the 11 schools they visited on the day, so there were even more kids riding if you count those who didn’t register.”

I
recently received an email newsletter from one of my favourite market commentators, Peter Thornhill, from Motivated Money. Thornhill’s message has not changed in the 15 years I have been following him. Invest in quality industrial (i.e. non resources) shares for a growing dividend stream and growing asset value. His belief is that your primary risk as a retiree is not the day to day volatility of the sharemarket, not the risk of losing money, but the risk of outliving it. He points out that when you chart the monthly movements of the sharemarket, it is quite volatile. However when you chart it by plotting the closing value at each year end, as if the sharemarket had only opened one day each year, it is not that volatile at all – it is almost a straight line upwards. All the noise of the day to day movements is just useless chatter, unless you are a chartist, uselessly trying to pick out ‘double tops’ and ‘head and shoulders’. With a portfolio of industrial shares, it is possible to meet your immediate spending needs through dividends alone without the need to sell assets, thus maintaining the original capital. Over time, a dividend stream can grow substantially, outweighing the effects of inflation. Thornhill retired in 2007/2008 and moved from reinvesting all his dividends, to taking them as cash to fund his living expenses. Although through the global financial crisis it was painful watching the paper value of his share investments halve in value, his income only fell by 20 per cent.
However his strategy of holding two years living expenses in cash paid off and he didn’t need to sell anything. That strategy also provided opportunity as he was able to take advantage of low prices to top up his holdings. As an example, in 2008 he purchased Commonwealth Bank shares at $26. Since then it has paid $21.29 in dividends, or 80 per cent of the purchase price. In addition, the shares are worth about three times what he paid for them. He makes his point by comparing $100,000 invested in term deposits back in 1980. It would still be worth $100,000 now (really a lot less after the effect of inflation) and the income of about $14,000 would now be $3,000 based on current interest rates. A portfolio of industrial shares would be yielding $80,000 and be worth $1.8 million. It’s hard not to be persuaded by his argument. Over the years, many people have been reduced to living totally on the old age pension because they had initially relied on bank deposits in what they thought was the safe option. In fact this proved to be the riskiest option as investors have outlived their funds. Personally I have always invested in shares. I know also that as I get older I won’t be moving to term deposits. I will always invest in the safety of shares. Mark Davidson is an Authorised Representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. MY LIFE
THE SEED YOU NEED Flaxseeds pack a powerful nutrition punch, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.
F
laxseeds have so many wonderful health properties, it’s hard not to fall in love with these crunchy little seeds. Here are eight reasons why you should incorporate them into your diet: 1. Say hello to smoother skin and glossy hair. Healthy fats, B vitamins, and an array of minerals in flaxseeds help your hair and skin stay in gorgeous condition. A tablespoon or two a day can help to reduce redness and flakiness, improve acne, rosacea, and eczema. 2. Researchers believe consuming flaxseeds regularly can reduce your risk of breast, endometrial and ovarian cancer. 3. Flaxseeds contain high levels of mucilage gum, which is amazing for your gut. It helps to keep food in the stomach longer, which can help increase nutrient absorption. 4. You won’t crave seconds. The rich fibre content and a healthy dose of fats means
you’re going to get full quick. 5. The seeds are rich in soluble fibre, which helps to trap fat and cholesterol in your digestive system, and passes it through your system, instead of getting stuck where it shouldn’t. 6. They help to manage female hormones. They not only give a dose of antioxidants but also act as phytoestrogens. The balancing effect on female hormones suggests it may also be useful as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy due to their estrogenic properties. 7. Gluten-free? No problem! They make a great flour substitute. 8. Flaxseeds help to cleanse your colon, pushing through toxins and making it easier to go to the toilet.

TRAVEL
Ice cave at Lake Baikal
FROZEN DESERT A trip to Siberia provides some icy treats. By Karen Sweeney
I
t’s hard not to feel like James Bond stepping off the hovercraft on the crunchy ice of frozen solid Lake Baikal in Siberia. One of my travel companions was less keen - “I’m British, we don’t walk on the ice!” she had insisted - but it was that or get left behind. We were staying at Listvyanka on the
banks of the world’s oldest and deepest lake. The 25-million-year-old lake is 1700 metres at its deepest and holds 20 per cent of the world’s fresh running water supply. It’s said Lake Baikal could provide fresh drinking water for the world’s entire population for 50 years if all other
supplies dried up. The lake was our first real taste of Siberia after a long four day and four night journey on the Trans Siberian Railway from Moscow. Its frozen surface in winter is desert-like in its vast empty appearance, but offers plenty of activities for adventurers, from ice skating to ice fishing and driving trips. Our own hovercraft experience began at the pebbled beach outside the local food market where the aromatic smell of steamed fish and rice dishes filled our noses and made our stomachs grumble. After a diet of powdered mashed potato and two-minute noodles every meal for four days it was something to look forward to on our return. It’s a white knuckle ride of high speed twists, turns and spins that takes just minutes to reach the far side of the lake. The bright coloured houses and shops at our starting point look tiny but stand out above the pristine white surface of the lake. Despite the freezing temperatures, which can reach minus 35C in the middle of winter, the sun shines brightly and reflects off the lake making sunglasses a must. On the lake I explored the surface,
brushing aside the soft “snow-cone” ice to see how far below the water ran fresh. As a trickle of freezing cold water bubbled to the surface I quickly decided that was a very bad idea. Closer to the shore, leaves have settled on the surface, leaving perfect leaf-shaped holes as they melt through the layers of ice. For the adventurers there’s the opportunity to hike up the side of the hill, climbing around the side of a railway tunnel to reach a rocky outcrop that hangs high above the jagged ice at the edge of the lake. Hunger - for food, a traditional sauna and a comfortable bed - draws us back to our home for the night, an almost Austrian looking chalet part way up the mountain where we’re looking forward to enjoying a traditional Russian sauna.
GETTING THERE Listvyanka is located 5000km from Moscow or 70km from Irkutsk in the heart of Siberia. There are multiple flights a day between Moscow and Irkutsk, taking five hours. The Trans Siberian Railway offers a longer, picturesque journey taking four days, four nights.

WHEN A GOOD IDEA STICKS A natural sunscreen made by two Sunshine Coast surfers has caught a wave of popularity amongst surfers around the world. Words: Leigh Robshaw
IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
W
hen Sunshine Coast surfers Jason Coleman and Jason Anfield began making their own sunscreen, their only aim was to be able to stay out in the surf longer without getting fried. They began making Surfmud for themselves and their friends in 2009 and went commercial in October 2014. The homegrown sunscreen that sticks like crazy has since taken on cult status amongst surfers around the world and is becoming a global business, with a view to employing people here on the Coast. ‘Jase’ and ‘Jase’ are surfing mates from way back. They had it pretty good growing up on the Coast, hitting their local beach breaks until Indo beckoned and they headed overseas in the late ‘80s. They quickly discovered their regular sunscreen didn’t cut it in the intense heat of Indonesia, but with the surf pumping, chose to stay out and get badly sunburnt rather than drag themselves away. It was during a trip to Indonesia in the late ‘90s that the seed for Surfmud was planted. A Bondi surfer had left behind a bottle of
Jason Anfield and Jason Coleman what Coleman describes as “still the best sunscreen ever made” – a zinc-based foundation for women, which was discontinued in the mid-2000s. “My dad was an organic farmer and he’s a surfer also,” says Coleman, who lives at Wurtulla, running his end of the Surfmud business from his home office.
“He always used zinc and got me onto zinc as a kid. We found that most zincs have chemical UV blockers in them; the zinc label is just for marketing. You think it’s zinc, but it doesn’t even have zinc in it.” Coleman studied chemistry as part of his environmental science degree at Griffith University, so he knew his stuff.
With Anfield’s background in business, the old surfing buddies teamed up. They hunted down the recipe for the discontinued product, swapped the nasty chemicals for natural ingredients and formulated their own product, testing and retesting until they had it right. “We ran into a lot of obstacles,” says Coleman. “We initially gave up on the idea of it being a business and just started making it for ourselves and our friends. We were travelling with it and leaving it in places for the locals to use, and we started getting contacted by people asking if we could send more. “A famous English surf photographer, Richard Kotch, contacted me and said it was the best thing he and his wife Amy had ever used and they’re in the water virtually every day of their lives,” says Coleman. “They said hey, you should think about making it commercially.” “What stopped us initially was that to be called a sunscreen, you have to have it made in a TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) registered facility and we couldn’t find a place to make it,” says

Coleman. “Most said they would put chemical dispersing agents in. A side effect of [that] is it wipes off too easily. With commercially made zincs, they put in a chemical blocker; you’ll see oxybenzene and titanium dioxide in there. “We wanted to make a zinc product in which zinc was the only active ingredient, because we think that’s the safest active ingredient. It’s the only thing I’m comfortable rubbing all over my face and my eight-year-old’s face.” Plenty of surfers agree. “We have trouble getting our mates to pay for it – we tell them they have to buy it from the website,” Anfield laughs. Coleman, a construction manager, says he’s been up until midnight handmaking the product until recently and is struggling to keep up with demand. “I put in 50 hours a week at least and my other job is at least 40 hours, so I’m working two jobs. “On the Sunshine Coast we’ve got an awesome following and we’ve made some good inroads in the northern beaches in Sydney and WA and the Gold Coast. We’re in America, California, four locations in Fiji, Indonesia, one on Bali and another three locations in Sumatra as well as Portugal and New Zealand.” Anfield is a business manager in
Brisbane and spends weeknights and weekends working on Surfmud. “We’re not making any money out of it at this stage,” Anfield says. “The goal is to set ourselves up, travel, surf and be involved in that industry. We’re doing the hard work now which we hope will lay that foundation for a more relaxed future and something our kids can continue.” A product that began small, spreading by word of mouth from surfer to surfer, and being made in batches of 100, then 1000, then 5000 and now 10,000, looks set to hit the mainstream. Parents of children with red hair and fair skin are now hitting the surf shops, saying it’s the only thing that won’t wipe off their kids’ faces. A TGA approved facility is now making Surfmud in larger batches and it’s on track to become TGA approved with an SPF by spring, with a body lotion also planned. Anfield is now based in Brisbane but visits the Coast regularly to see family and friends or surf with his mate Jase. “We’ve been surfing since we were kids,” says Anfield. “It’s great to have someone with the same ideas and the same intent, the same things we enjoy, and to be able to take that into the business arrangement and support each other through that process. It’s a great place to be.”

Inflammation of the heart tissue, such as in Pericarditis, is most commonly caused by infections, be it bacterial, fungal or viral and can affect you at any age. Pericarditis can present with other symptoms such as dry cough, fever, fatigue and anxiety, and in acute stages, be very similar to symptoms of heart attack pain, though in many cases there may not be any symptoms at all, occasionally leading to sudden heart attack without warning. If the cause is misdiagnosed, and not identified, it may progress to heart failure over time. A patient, aged 80, with a history of high blood pressure, previously suffered a heart attack at the age of 50, presented with a dangerously high aortic (heart) blood pressure of 150/110, caused by inflammation in the heart tissues, having been medicated for the previous 30 years at brachial (arm) blood pressure 120/80. He was unaware that his blood pressure measured differently in various parts of his body. With this type of investigation, 2 forms of infection were found as well as high levels of inflammation produced by triggers in his diet. Within 2 months, his blood pressure normalised, within 10 months his cholesterol and triglycerides dropped to within normal levels, and inflammatory markers were reduced. He was then able to remove his medication with the support of his doctor after 30 years. Specific blood and stool testing is necessary to identify the type of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Each type of infection will respond differently to different types of treatment. Accurate treatment measures are then undertaken resulting in complete recovery, rather than relying on medications to control symptoms for life. Medications to control symptoms rather than treating the cause may lead to side effects, which may create further health complications in the future, which is why it is important to completely investigate your particular circumstances. Reduce your risk of heart disease for life, for you and your family’s sake, with the right testing and treatment, without the need for lifelong medication. If you would like further information, please contact Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre for a free half hour consultation to discuss your particular health concerns on (07) 5443 1987.

MY OPINION
PICKING A WINNER
WHO WILL SAVE THE IDIOT BOX?
Bill Darby says it’s refreshing to see three new candidates vying for Mayor Mark Jamieson’s job, but he’s a tough guy to beat.
Sami Muirhead wonders how much longer commercial TV stations can rely on reality shows to keep them afloat.
W
hat are you watching on TV at the moment? The total audience for Channel Nine has plummeted nearly 13 per cent in prime time (6pm to midnight) compared to this time last year. It is down a whopping 24 per cent in the advertiser-friendly 16 to 54 demographic. Seven is up half a per cent in prime time largely thanks to My Kitchen Rules continuing its winning rampage. I sometimes sit on our lounge watching the show in my tracky dacks eating my fish fingers, while asking myself all the hard-hitting questions. Does Perfect Paleo Pete Evans spend most days in a tanning salon to achieve that perennial golden glow? Is it a bit too orange or is it my TV screen? How does he get his teeth whiter than the fridge section at Joyce Mayne? I think Paleo Pete is a bit sexy but he is so skinny these days from his diet of activated almonds and organic free-range Himalayan goat’s milk. Come on Pete, sink those uber white teeth into some fat fried hot chips. And let me outline my fantasy here in case my husband is reading this. Pete would walk through the door and say to me, “I came home from work early because I missed the kids so much and I thought I could help them with their homework before you go sit on the couch and have a wine while watching your favourite show”.
MKR’s other weapon is of course the ladies’ man, Manu. I can’t understand a lot of what the French critic says, but he manages to make anything sound sexy. Manu could ask us to wrap our mouths around a half-boiled, dirty, old smelly sports sock and we would be in such a trance from that accent we just may do it. Now, back to Channel Nine and its ratings ruins. The execs have admitted they’ve mucked up by not wheeling out the 3957th season of The Block. I mean we could not get enough of wild Gold Coast Suzie dancing in a bikini on a boat. And the actual renovation stuff is pretty good too. For my liking, there is too much of Scotty Cam acting like a tradie when I think we all know these days he is more likely to be counting his piles of money than actually building something. And then you have Shelly Craft who seems about as happy to mingle with the everyday contestants as a vegetarian wandering through a butcher’s shop. But the show still rates through the roof. We all love a good revamp and life hack. Walking the empty aisles of Kmart looking for life hack inspiration is my treat sometimes. Yes, that is a big night out for this self-confessed loser. And some nights if I am feeling particularly wild, I will go to the cookbook section of Kmart just to say hi to my old mates on the cover of their cookbooks: Perfect Pete and Manu The French Mumbler.

definitely spoke too soon in my column last month. Here I was lamenting the lack of interest in the council elections and how no one seemed interested in the top job. As they say, a week is a long time in politics. In some of the division seats, and for Mayor, we are heading to the polls on Saturday spoilt for choice. Mark Jamieson has three opponents who have come out of the woodwork hoping to become the next mayor. I have to say, getting to know these candidates at the various forums held across the Coast has been interesting to say the least. Former Maroochy Mayor Alison Barry-Jones is a breath of fresh air with her enthusiastic platform supporting culture and the arts, and good for her. Greens candidate Tony Gibson is somewhat less inspiring in his campaign unfortunately. He seems convinced the push to expand the airport is an evil plot against us by the council, and despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, he believes demand for our existing airport is actually shrinking. Ron Green is the third candidate. Ron from Conondale is just plain awesome. It’s people like Ron who make Queensland elections so entertaining. We’ve thrown up a few
interesting characters in politics over the years, so who knows, good old Ron might just be next. On a serious note, there has been one constant throughout this mayoral campaign. Mark Jamieson’s credibility, genuineness and commitment to deliver stable and reputable local government is proving to be very tough for the others to match. The contest for the area just south of Maroochydore and down to Currimundi has hotted up over the past few weeks. With no less than 12 candidates between Divisions 3 and 4, tourism, the economy and growth management issues (such as traffic and parking) are dominating the agenda. With so much focus lately on the Maroochyore CBD, the ratepayers here feel they’re missing out on much needed infrastructure. The winning councillors will need to put up a good fight to ensure projects in the pipeline actually receive proper funding. Again, experience will count for everything. With a string of old faces and new vying for council positions on Saturday, we voters have the future of the region in our hands. It’s a privilege to live in a great democracy. May we all respect the process of freedom of choice and be proud of the informed and considered vote we cast.

The La Boite Theatre Company’s 4000 Miles is a compassionate and hilariously unsentimental theatre performance not to be missed. Presented by Sunshine Coast Council’s Coolum Civic Centre, the stage show is on Saturday, April 23. The story begins with Leo, a 21-yearold male who rocks up unannounced at the Manhattan apartment of his 91-yearold Jewish grandmother Vera. Having broken up with his girlfriend and cycled across the country, he needs a place to crash for the night, no questions
asked. But Vera – prickly, stubborn and sharp as a tack – isn’t about to let him off that easily. As an overnight couch-surf turns into an extended stay, 4000 Miles unearths a surprising commonality between these two generations in this emotionally compelling drama.
Tickets are $38 for adults, $25 for people 25 years and under and $16 for school groups. To book visit scvenuesandevents.com.au. T A V E R N

RETIREMENT PROMOTION
RIGHT AT HOME
T
he energy surrounding the construction of new homes continues at the prestigious over 50s gated community of Nature’s Edge Buderim. Surrounded by rainforest these brand new individually designed homes should be on your shopping list if you are ready to downsize and travel. What are the best features? We asked one of the newest home owners Sheryl Russell why she decided to buy in Nature’s Edge. “For us one of the main reasons was we wanted to downsize but we still wanted space. We didn’t want to spend time mowing lawns or doing house maintenance but we didn’t want to live in a unit and we are way too young for a retirement home.” “This way we have a brand new home with little upkeep, and we are free to take off travelling whenever we want. We go away in our RV several times a year so now we don’t have to worry about security or finding someone to look after our house. “There is a caretaker on site, and being a gated community with closed-circuit cameras, we can now go away knowing everything is looked after. When we come back there is a place to store our motorhome and boat and everything is just as we left it. “We also wanted to live with likeminded people – at our last home we lived beside people who didn’t care about their house and made noise at all hours, we don’t have to worry about that here. “We are also looking forward to the Leisure Centre! To have such a wonderful facility at our front door will be so fantastic. “We just wanted to be free to enjoy life, relax and be able to get away without
any fuss when we wanted to. We are very happy with our decision. “ The Summit is the last release of the first stage and because of the high demand for homes, construction has already begun. TIMELY MAKEOVER Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the BMW 3 SERIES
M
ost carmakers would sell their soul for a model as successful as the legendary BMW 3-Series. The Bavarian brand’s sporty mid-sizer has, perhaps more than any other model, helped define the BMW brand – sporty, attractive, youthful and aspirational.
It’s hard to fathom that the baby Beemer has been around since 1975, with total production now topping 14 million units – more than 110,000 of those sold in Australia. Almost one in four BMWs ever built bear the 3-Series badge. In that time it has spawned such offspring as the legendary M3 sports
coupe; diesel variants, wagons, coupes, compacts and cabriolets and, more recently, the X3 SUV as well as a hatchback (called the Gran Coupe) and the half-wagon, half-SUV (called the Gran Turismo). It is clearly the most successful model in BMW’s storied history – and one of the
most admired and desired cars ever to grace the planet. Yet today the 3-Series is under more pressure than perhaps at any other time in its four decades of existence. Now halfway through its sixth generation (unveiled late 2012), the 3-Series has recently undergone a mid-model update in the face of unprecedented competition. What were once small dots in its rear-view mirrors have loomed larger by the year, and have recently pulled out to overtake the 3-Series – with the arch-rival Mercedes-Benz C-Class setting lofty new standards in this segment – along with growing competition from Audi’s ever-improving A4 and Japanese options like the Lexus IS and Infiniti Q50. Now, just when BMW needed it least, there’s the terrific Jaguar XE trying to steal some of BMW’s traditional customers with its mix of sportiness and sophistication. Short of a completely new model – still a couple of years away at best - BMW has responded with this comprehensive mid-model refresh that has added technology, efficiency and value to an already attractive package. Partly, they’ve gone back to the future continued page 40 >

MOTORING
<from page 38 with the reintroduction of the iconic 318i badge - a new entry-level model (from $54,900) with the first-ever three-cylinder engine to feature in this car. From there the refreshed 3 steps through a series of petrol four-cylinder variants (all impressive), one turbo-diesel and rounded out by the flagship, twin-turbo six-cylinder 340i. We tested the new 3 in two forms – the most powerful four-cylinder version in the 330i Touring (wagon); plus the range-topping, $89,900 340i sedan. Our test included both available trim levels – the more spartan Sport variant (in the 330i) and the plush Luxury (in our 340i test machine) – the packages distinctly different and offered at identical cost. Mechanically, there’s no question that BMW continues to make a compelling case – the two engines tested delivered sparkling performance and impressive efficiency. The eightspeed auto, likewise, is class-leading. But most critics agree – and even the most staunch BMW fans could hardly dispute – that Benz has stepped ahead of the Beemer in terms of luxury feel and appearance – particularly inside the cockpit. Thankfully, though, BMW seems
40 My Weekly Preview | March 18, 2016

Overseas model shown
to have raised its game significantly in the dynamics of this latest 3. The updates seem to have restored the driver-first motto that has underpinned this car’s stunning success over the years – but which we felt had been diminished when this sixth-generation was first released. It rides and steers with rare confidence and rewards drivers who are inclined to test its limits with stable, well-resolved handling. And they’ve also been generous with the equipment in this upgrade – with a welter of electronic safety aides, plus some funky technology lifting the value equation substantially. Apart from the basic 318i, all models receive rear-view camera, head-up display, lane-change warning, surround-
view parking display, LED headlights, real-time traffic updates as well as an upgraded Connected Drive cabin management system and Driving Assistant. Stepping up a rung (and about $6000) to the 320i adds electric seats, adaptive suspension, digital radio and upgraded lights package; while forking out $70-grand for the 330i adds bigger alloys, the option of luxury trim, upgraded navigation, genuine leather upholstery and comfort access. Best of all, though, are the upgraded engines in both models tested. The now-familiar 3-litre, twin-turbo six of the 340i, replacing the previous 335i, is an all-new device with a hefty 240kW and 450Nm delivering dazzling performance – including a 0-100km/h sprint of just over five seconds. But we were even more impressed by the smaller, and slightly less powerful, turbo four of the 330i – whose 185kW delivers linear, punchy acceleration, brilliant throttle response and, perhaps best of all, an exhaust note that revives memories of the legendary M3 of a couple of decades ago.
BMW 3 SERIES HOW BIG? The 3-Series has grown substantially across the four decades of its existence – and although it’s still officially a mid-sizer it’s plenty large enough for four full-sized adults, plus luggage. HOW FAST? We tested the four-cylinder 330i – which will reach the speed limit in less than six seconds – and the six-cylinder 340i which is almost a second quicker. HOW THIRSTY? BMW boasts that the current crop of 3-Series are the most fuel-efficient ever, including the 3-cylinder 318i which sips just 5.4L/100km. The only diesel in the range, the 320d, does even better with a thirst of 4.4L/100km. HOW MUCH? Entry-level pricing dips to just $54,900 with the reintroduction of the 318i badge, with prices scaling up to the flagship 340i at $89,900. Again, the 330i looks like solid value at $69,900,

vision is evident in the thriving, mixed use commercial and residential urban community on the doorstep of Maroochydore’s newly announced CBD redevelopment. The design criterion for Sunshine Cove was to create a coastal, urban lifestyle community where individuality and the freedom of space remained paramount. A medium density ‘parkland city’ environment offering easy access to all the usual amenities of a major centre like schools and transport without losing the lifestyle benefits of its laid back Sunshine Coast location.

We are currently offering free of charge trials of the Phonak Lyric hearing aid. As the only hearing practice on the Sunshine Coast accredited and experienced in fitting this revolutionary product, we are now looking for volunteers with a hearing loss to come and try this breakthrough completely invisible, natural sounding technology with us. The trial is completely free of charge and without obligation and you will be helping us to learn and study this unique proposition in our local community. If you are able to help us with this project, please call us and we will arrange an appointment.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Stuart Kennedy the Lennox lad, are you kidding me? The giant Slayer! First he disposes of Slater, then Medina, and he is not even on the tour. Wow. Watch the replays of Quiksilver Pro and be blown away. He is slick. A bugger to see Julian and Fanning knocked out, damn. So now the bad news – like Groundhog Day a bit - surf this weekend is looking very average. So start praying for a low pressure system. Or head to northern NSW to chase some swell.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Oversize mangrove jack are working on live bait at Twin Waters. You can get trevally on ‘Twisties’ chrome lures around the motorway bridge pylons. You can find whiting and bream at Channel Island using yabbies and prawns. Get flathead on slow trolled lures around Goat Island. SURF: Huge seas last week have dragged sand out to sea and exposed rocks right along Maroochy and Alexandra Headland beaches. Sand is being pumped back on to these exposed areas. Bream and whiting are taking pippies on the rising tide. You can get quality tailor in the early mornings at Pincushion. OFFSHORE: You’ll find sweetlip, parrot and tarwhine at The Gneerings with a few cobia and spotted mackerel working bait at dawn. The southern end of the Barwon Banks is best for mixed reef fish. Murphy’s is worth a stop on the way out to the wider banks. FRESHWATER: Some impoundments are near full and fish can be seen going over the walls, so check the creeks below the walls as fish should be firing using earthworms, shrimp and shallow diving lures. The dam waters are murky at present and will need time to settle. Spinner baits are one lure that will work in dirty water.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Get set for a week of extremes! If you’re too set in your ways mid-week, then you’re in for an unsettling time as the lunar eclipse disrupts your usual routine. If you are too extravagant on Good Friday – you could find yourself overeating and overindulging.
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] With Mercury and the lunar eclipse stimulating your networking zone, it’s the perfect time to participate in group activities, and communicate your ideas to the world in person and via social media. You’re in the mood to mix and mingle; socialise and circulate.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] All eyes are on you this week, as the lunar eclipse and Mercury boost your public profile. If you want something, then you have to declare it to the world. The Easter weekend is an appropriate time for rebirth and renewal.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Don’t fence lions in! The sun, Mercury and Uranus are all activating your adventure gene. So it’s time to enthuse, experiment and explore, as you make the most of every moment of every day. This week’s stars are also wonderful for travel and education.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Virgos often suffer from analysis paralysis. This week you need to stop over-thinking and start doing, as your ruler Mercury shifts into dynamic Aries. You’ll be able to work at a faster pace than usual so don’t waste the opportunity to roll up your sleeves and get heaps done.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] The lunar eclipse encourages you to get the balance right between giving and taking; between your needs and those of loved ones. It won’t all be smooth sailing and eternal sunshine though! You have to learn to take the ups with the downs.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The lunar eclipse lights up your dreaming zone. So your motto for the moment is from feminist writer Gloria Steinem [born on March 25] “Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] There are no excuses for being bored this week Sagittarius, as Mercury and the lunar eclipse shake up your social gene and your sporty side. It’s also the perfect time to initiate an important conversation with a child or teenager; or take up a creative new hobby.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] You’re at your best and worst this week Capricorn, as the lunar eclipse stirs up your charming and cantankerous sides. The spotlight is on paid or volunteer work [as well as your reputation and public profile] so make sure you are putting on a good show.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] You’re dreaming of the future and have so many ideas swirling around, but how many of them see the light of day? If you get side-tracked by endless possibilities, then you’ll never get anything done. Saturn demands that you set achievable goals.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Your Piscean charisma shines brightly, as Venus vamps through your sign. Time to indulge in beauty therapies and body pampering, plus call in a few old favours! The focus is on lust and loot mid-week, when the lunar eclipse brings up unresolved issues.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] On Monday, Mercury moves into your sign. So you’re in the mood to solve problems with lightning speed. But Wednesday’s lunar eclipse stirs up your temperamental side. If you keep busy with interesting projects, then you’ll feel less inclined to be disruptive and demanding.

THE LAST WORD
MOMENTS OF TRANSCENDENCE Richard O’Leary recalls the relief he felt as a child realising he was not the centre of the universe.
B
oots in red dust, standing in the middle of an African savannah, the important things in life became as clear as the unobstructed view of the horizon. I’d just helped change the flat tyre on one of the giant wheels of the former army truck, whose original camouflage had been spray-painted with the bright red branding of the tour company. I was halfway through the trip around the continent’s east coast, which included Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda. In a week or so I would come down with malaria, the fever and chills, the vomiting and diarrhoea. But at this point, as I stood a little away from my fellow travellers, I was healthy, in fact more alive than I had ever felt. Incongruously, it was because as I looked around me I felt incredibly small, insignificant, just a speck in a big world and infinite universe. I’d had the same feeling as a child
when I lay on the lawn and looked at the stars and found myself clutching at the red earth in the backyard of my home in an Australian country town, trying to stop myself from falling off the planet. But standing on this ochre earth, half a world a world away, it was all my concerns and worries that floated away as
“I’d had the same feeling as a child when I lay on the lawn…” I realised I was not the centre of the universe. It was such a relief. Many of the things I held dear became insignificant: the high pressure job, the material possessions, the concrete and chaos of the city I called home. Twenty years later I wish I could say these sentiments have shaped where I am today, but in reality that feeling on the
plains of Africa was fleeting and when I returned to my ‘real’ life, that big moment was slowly eroded away by little things: bills, big nights and any number of trivial obsessions. But I’d like to think that some of it has stayed with me, and I have passed those values to my boys. I was reminded of that moment this week when I listened to a podcast about Andrew Harper, a bloke who has dedicated his life to crossing the Simpson Desert with camels. He talked about how hard he finds it each time he returns to the everyday distractions that dominate our lives. It got me thinking. I have a birthday coming up. I may just go bush, and at night I’m going to take off my shoes and socks and wriggle my toes in some red soil and then lie back on a thin mattress under the stars and just try to hold on. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

“Westfund is the best Healthfund I have been with. Unfortunately I went to another Health fund, as my partner was in it, after being with Westfund for over 8 years. I soon came back and brought him with me. I recently had a baby girl and they sent me a beautiful note HAND WRITTEN what other fund would do that!!! I have told all my friends about them... Westfund are the best and I would never change again what a mistake that was...”
