OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

t may not be polite to mention the B-word in company – but I think we need to talk about our budgets. Is it just me or does it seem more difficult to make ends meet these days? Well, help is at hand. Our cover story this week looks at how to identify whether you are in financial strife, and what to do about it if you just can’t balance the books. Worried what to do with the kids these school holidays? Don’t stress, our School Holiday Fun Guide has lots of things to see and do – it starts on page 36. Also this week, you can have a quick chat with singer Katie Noonan who now lives locally, get a taste of France and test drive Audi’s new RS3 Sportback. As always, there’s plenty of style, business, beauty and life advice, local news and views, and property – including some tips to get that home you really want. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

THE DIVINE MISS N

When acclaimed singer/songwriter Katie Noonan, formerly of the band George, isn’t performing, recording or dreaming up new projects as artistic director of the Queensland Music Festival, she’s hanging out in her hammock with her family at her hinterland home. WHERE ON THE COAST DO YOU LIVE?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A pocket of paradise between Noosa and Eumundi.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?

Better public transport.

Almost four years.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Because it is paradise and has a wonderful sense of community. Amazing food and produce, great art, fantastic music, amazing nature and good people.

The moment I met my husband – early 1995. Friends before lovers, we have recently celebrated 11 years married and 17 years together. Without him my song doesn’t sing.

FIRST JOB? Local paper delivery gal.

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Being a mum and wifey and a good friend to my longterm girlfriends of over 20 years.

Finishing touches to my new album with the Brodsky String Quartet called With Love and Fury that features the words of the iconic writer Judith Wright set to music by 10 of our finest classical composers. Also dreaming up lots of exciting projects in my new job as the Artistic Director of the Queensland Music Festival.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Lying in the hammock with my boys.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . AAP

My beautiful boys Dexter (10) and Jonah (9), my delicious husband Zac and our puppy Sassy the staffy.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Noons, Noonizzle Forshizzle, Noo-nah, Nu-nu, Noo-Nit, Noonski.

Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder; Both Sides Now – Joni Mitchell; Joga – Bjork.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

The days my boys were born. Close second the day I became a wifey.

I don’t really do regrets but fan girling to the point of quite tipsy embarrassment with Guy Garvey was kinda funny. He was a sweetheart though.

FIRST CAR? My first car for ME is my current car – a sexy Fiat 500C – red, fast and feisty.

FAVOURITE BOOK?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Be kind on the way up as you will meet them on the way down.

Hmm, Donald Trump at the moment. He is scaring the shit out of me to be honest. Our revolting and inhumane policy on the treatment of refugees. The upcoming plebiscite on gay marriage and the frustration at wasting $160 million on something we all know we need and a process that will undoubtedly hurt good people and cause damage. CSG fracking and how stupid and short sighted it is. People calling people of the land eco-fascists – crazy stuff. Cuts to federal arts funding. Our lack of empathy, understanding and respect of our indigenous history.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? Frustrations inform my art. I believe art needs to say things. I try to make subtle change through music and doing things with artistic integrity.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF?

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

Don’t feel you need to hide your light to make others feel better.

We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler.

My hammock! But the Noosa Heads National Park Walk is spectacularly beautiful.

Tea and LOTS OF IT.

FAVOURITE SONG?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

An Equal Music – Vikram Seth.

OH crap – too hard. I will give you my top five. Something – George Harrison; Mirrorball – Elbow/Guy Garvey;

Bohemian Bangalow in Eumundi – great food.

TEA OR COFFEE? NRL OR AFL? Mateeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I am a Queenslander! NRL of course. Wally Lewis King forever!

NEW SEASO N IN STO RE NOW!

DOLLARS AND SENSE

Doing it tough? We have some timely advice to help you get on top of your finances. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

“You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. So sometimes the first step is to jot down money in and money out – don’t make it a big deal.

F

or a country that prides itself on giving everyone a fair go, a lot of Australians are doing it tough at the moment. The most recent study into poverty by the Australian Council of Social Services found more than 2.5 million Australians are living below the poverty line – that’s about 10 per cent of our population. The situation is even worse for children, with nearly one in five kids living in poverty – that becomes one in three in sole parent households. In Australia, the poverty line equates to living on less than $400 a week for a single adult or $841 for a couple with two children. But it’s not just people on low incomes who are feeling the pinch. A recent study found that more than half of Australians who are paying off a house are struggling with mortgage stress – spending more than 30 per cent of their after tax income on their mortgage. Linda Stacey, who runs a Smith Family program on the Sunshine Coast called Saver Plus, says the biggest challenge for many people is to accept there is a problem. “People don’t inherently want to face up to it – it’s only when it gets really bad that people will seek help. Until then you want to think, oh it will be OK, I might get an extra job. People are always really optimistic because they can’t face up to it.” 14 My Weekly Preview | March 24, 2016

14.indd 1

People who qualify for her 10-month program are taught how to get into the habit of saving money – and the ANZ bank matches what they save dollar for dollar up to $500. More than 85 per cent of people who finish the course keep the bank account open and continue to save. To qualify for the program you must have a health care card and part-time work, but Stacey says its simple lessons can be used by anybody. “On a day-to-day basis the big thing is ‘fail to plan, plan to fail’. I think that’s a really good motto for people to have. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge. So sometimes the first step is to jot down money in and money out – don’t make it a big deal. “The other thing is tracking your money. At the end of the day, write down what you spend. People are always surprised at how much a week they spend on discretionary items. If you spend one dollar or two dollars on a newspaper, write it down, if you do that for a couple of weeks, it’s well worth the benefits.” “If you look at how much a cup of coffee costs per day. . . most coffees are four dollars so if you get one every day – that’s $20 over the working week, and if you get two its $40. So maybe you could replace that habit by bringing coffee – making it yourself – or just cutting back.” Stacey says start small and you’ll be surprised at the money you can save – watch your pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.

ARE YOU IN MORTGAGE STRESS? Mortgage stress is defined as contributing more than 30 per cent of your after tax income to your mortgage. According to Mortgage Choice’s recent First Homeowner survey: • 48% of respondents are under mortgage stress. • 57% of Australians continue to make additional mortgage repayments whenever possible • 40% of people put as much as they could afford towards their mortgage each month.

HOW TO REDUCE MORTGAGE STRESS Redo your budget: Your budget should be reassessed regularly as your finances can vary from month to month. Revisit your budget and expenditure from this same time last year to help ensure that you can factor in any areas where extra spending might arise throughout the year and where costs can be cut and possible savings made. Build a financial buffer: If you aren’t already doing so, consider repaying your mortgage above the required amount. This will help you to ensure that you are financially prepared if and when interest rates start to rise. By doing so, you will develop greater peace of mind by having more funds at your disposal, if need be, and it will help with reducing the interest payable on your loan. Keep in mind that if your interest rate has recently dropped or drops next month, it’s a good idea to continue repaying your mortgage at the pre-rate cut rate. Review your automatic repayments: Many lenders allow you to set up automatic loan repayments so that a regular repayment amount is deducted from your account. If you are already doing this, consider increasing your automatic deduction. Even as little as $5 extra per month can make a difference. COVER STORY

TIPS TO HELP GET OUT OF FINANCIAL DIFFICULTY 1. Determine the problem – The first step is to determine the source of your financial difficulty. Is it large credit card debt or mortgage payments? Is it spending more than you earn? Start by writing down who you owe money to and what repayments you must make each month. 2. Complete a budget – The next step is to work out a budget. Find out what your income is and then be honest with yourself and write down all your expenditure. A budget will give you a clear picture of your income, expenditure and if you have any surplus funds available or if you are spending more money than you earn. A budget also gives you the opportunity to review your expenses such as: phone bills, car, life and house insurances as these items may not have been reviewed for a long period and it will be worthwhile to see if any better deals are available. 3. Cut costs – This tip sounds obvious at first but if you’re on a tight budget, you can truly not get out of debt if you do not cut costs. Start by evaluating your monthly spending and see what you can change. Do you need to buy your lunch every day? Could you stop eating out at restaurants or takeaways? Could you work out at home or outside instead of the gym? 4. Change your spending habits – This tip sounds a lot like cutting costs but it is actually very different. Somehow you got

into debt and while some debts are acceptable (such as a home mortgage) others, like credit cards and store accounts, are actually directly related to your spending habits. New shoes? Big TV? Netflix? TAB Bets? You need to make a decision to stop spending on these items now. 5. Stop using credit cards – Pay cash (or use a debit card). Start by paying off your smallest amount owed first, as this will give you a boost as you see a debt actually being repaid. A small success will drive you on to greater achievements. If you need to use a credit card only have one card, with a low limit and ensure you pay it off each month. 6. Get professional help – Seeking help is a good idea if you feel overwhelmed by your debts or you are just not sure how to move forward financially. You can look at the Financial Counselling Australia website for free financial information or ASIC’s MoneySmart website for additional tips. The other option is to make an appointment with a qualified financial planner who can also assist you to put in place a plan to help you get yourself back on track and guide you going forward. 7. Keep your family secure –The first step is to save for an emergency fund, so that if anything happens, you’ve got the money. If you have a spouse and/or dependents, you should definitely get life insurance and make a will – as soon as possible. 8. Read about personal finances – The more you educate yourself, the better your finances will be. 9. Look to grow your net worth – Do whatever you can to improve your net worth, either by reducing your debt, increasing your savings, or increasing your income, or all of the above. Look for new ways to make or save money. Over the course of months, if you calculate your net worth each month, you’ll see it grow. And that feels great. BIG MONEY FOR BIG IDEAS

A feast for the senses is coming to Maroochydore this weekend as the annual Ocean St World Festival gets underway. The event attracted more than 40,000 people last year and organisers are promising an exciting lineup of entertainment, food and art this time around. The community celebration will be held on Sunday, March 27 from 10am to 10pm and will include market stalls selling a variety of foods from around the globe.

CHEESE, WINE, CHOCOLATE FEST The annual Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest is on again this Easter weekend. Visitors can take part in a range of activities including Queensland’s only cheese rolling competition, a cheester egg hunt, Easter hat parade, camel rides and horse and kart rides. Plus there will be entertainment, cooking demonstrations and food to taste. There is free entry to the family fun day and it’s on Saturday, March 26 from 7am at Kenilworth Park and Cheese Factory.

Entries for the inaugural Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards have now closed and it’s the judges who have their thinking caps on as they set about finding the finalists. There’s $20,000 in prizes up for grabs for students and their schools and Hackfest 2015 winner Sean Bannister said the competition was also a valuable gateway to the technology industry for local youth. “The Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards really are a fantastic starting point for young people who’re at a stage in their lives where they might be still trying to figure out what they’re good at,’’ he said. The finalists will be announced before the end of the month.

Looking after your best interests When a relationship comes to an end, more often than not, both parties want to separate their assets quickly and effectively to reduce any additional burden. Sometimes the couple have already established a mutual agreement about the division of their finances, and will seek a lawyer’s advice to finalise the process. Although they may have established the grounds of their agreement, each party is still required to seek individual legal advice. The law is very clear on this issue; Lawyers are not allowed to represent both parties in Family Law matters to avoid competing interests of the parties.

Although each party may have agreed on an initial arrangement, the written contract is the legally binding document and may be more complex than anticipated. A lawyer is able to help their client understand the contract and ensure that they are receiving a fair outcome. When the case is presented in court, the Judge needs to be satisfied that each party has been given the opportunity to seek independent

advice to understand their legal rights. Although you can represent yourself, the Judge may send self-representing parties away to seek free advice from a Community Legal Service or Legal Aid if they think the person could benefit from a legal advocate. Binding financial agreements such as cohabitation and prenuptial agreements also have provisions requiring each parties Lawyer to acknowledge that their client has been provided independent legal advice. The agreement is invalid and not considered to be legally binding until the lawyers have signed the certificate.

CONFIDENCE IN COUNCIL SHOWS MAROOCHYDORE WINS Sunshine Coast constituents

Mothers giving birth at Nambour Hospital have welcomed the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s new Midwifery Group Practice program. The program means women are now allocated one midwife. Antenatal Clinic Midwife Unit manager Ann Evans said previously a woman may have seen a number of midwives or doctors for her pregnancy care: “Each woman is now allocated a midwife who follows her through her pregnancy, is on call and attends her birth, and visits her and her baby at home afterwards.” Eight babies have been born under the program since its launch in February.

have voted to return Mark Jamieson to the mayoral chair for a second term. Jamieson secured 61 per cent of the vote at last Saturday’s election ahead of Greens member Tony Gibson who pulled in 17 per cent. The community indicated confidence in the council by returning nine of 10 councillors to their seats. The only change was in division four, following the retirement of councillor Chris Thompson, with former Wallabies coach John Connolly declared the new representative.

More than four million people in Australia have some form of disability. The Murphy family, who own Murphy Homes, has joined STEPS Charity, and a growing number of Sunshine Coast tradies and businesses, to build the Pathways Project – a live-in training home in Caloundra for people with disabilities to learn the skills to live independently. “Just like a lot of the tradies and suppliers coming on board, we wanted to get involved in this project because we felt it was our responsibility to give back to the community,’’ Ben Murphy said. The STEPS Pathways build is set to be completed in June.

Maroochydore won the Queensland Youth Surf Life Championships on the Gold Coast for the second year in a row. The club came from 90 points behind to claim the title finishing the three-day carnival on 283 points ahead of close rivals Alexandra Headland on 240 points and Northcliffe on 216. Alex entered the third and final day with a sizeable lead, but a dominant performance by Maroochydore nippers in the challenging surf conditions proved the difference in the end. Maroochydore’s head coach Nathan Greig said the competitors stood up to the challenge. “After a two-hour delay due to poor conditions they came out and fired in the swim and iron events.’’

PROFILE

FEAR WON’T RULE HER

High profile Sunshine Coast businesswoman Kimberley Lynch says a freak accident last November won’t kill her adventurous spirit. Words: Leigh Robshaw

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

I

t was Sunday November 8, the weekend of her birthday. Kimberley Lynch had toyed with the idea of going tandem hangliding in Byron Bay with her Bucket List Meetup group, but her son had a friend’s birthday party to attend, so she stayed behind on the Coast. When she turned up to the party to collect her son and saw they’d erected a zipline, she didn’t hesitate to get in on the action. She’d been on professional ziplines before and is an adventure sports lover. What happened next was the kind of freak accident that would make anyone stop and reassess their lives. “We don’t know why, but the brakes didn’t work and I went ploughing through the platform, hung up upside down and fell face forward,” she says. “I did no damage to my face at all but I had cuts and bruises down the rest of my body. I was in tremendous pain, but I thought I just had to go home and lie down. I didn’t understand how serious it was initially. “My friend lived out in the boonies and I said I would drive rather than call an ambulance. In hindsight, it was a stupid thing to do. I was driving with tears flowing, doing about 20 kilometres an hour, and my son was saying please stop and call an ambulance. The pain got so intense but would you believe, I kept driving – you’ve probably sensed I’m quite stubborn and determined. “I eventually drove to Caloundra Hospital Emergency and the nurses and doctors said I had fractured my thoracic spine and I was lucky to be alive.” After scans showed she had broken her neck, Lynch was placed in a neck brace and faced weeks out of action, lying in bed at her Birtinya home, unable to do the most basic of tasks.

The fiercely independent single mother of two sons, Noah 11 and Joshua 13, was forced to do two things that were way out of her comfort zone: slow down and ask for help. As the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay regional manager of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland, Lynch is a well-known businesswoman on the Coast. Help came in droves. Originally from upstate New York in the US, she moved to Australia in 2001 and has no extended family here, so she had to rely on friends, neighbours and corporate clients to get through those difficult weeks. “I have beautiful people around me but it’s hard to ask for help. When you’re on your own, you get used to doing stuff for yourself,” she says. “I was so

overwhelmed with all the beautiful people who helped, all without me asking, because they knew I wouldn’t ask. “My neighbour picked me up from hospital and went back the next day to pick my car up. One of my corporate partners, Samantha Mackie from Xerox, and I had become friends. She gave up her weekend to vacuum and mop for me. I couldn’t do anything. I had friends who would drop meals off, friends coming to the house to cook, friends coming to pick my boys up to take them to school and bring them back. One friend paid for a cleaner to come to the house, I had friends taking me to doctors appointments, picking up my medication. It was just really wonderful. “November and December were really awful, over the Christmas and New

Year’s holidays. I’m really active, but I couldn’t really lift anything or do much of anything. It has really been in the last couple of weeks I haven’t had to use pain medication to fall asleep and I’ve been able to go back to some of my regular activities, which is nice.” Lynch is keen to resume standup paddleboarding and wants to try jet packing, which she had planned to do last November before the accident put a halt to her plans. One thing she’s determined not to do is allow fear to stop her. Her family and friends in the US are cautioning her to tone it down on the action sports, but she’s having none of it. “People kept saying to me, I hope you learnt a lesson and you realise you can’t do that stuff anymore. I am a very adventurous person who likes to live life to the fullest and I don’t want this incident to kill my adventurous spirit and I don’t want my kids to be afraid of being adventurous.” While the accident does play on her mind at times, Lynch says everyone faces challenges and it’s a choice to be positive – and imperative to ask for help when you need it, as difficult as that may be. “I think the big realisation for me was that I had to slow down,” she says. “I work long hours in my position and I’m always doing stuff for my family and other people and I normally don’t sit still at all. This accident forced me to sit still and it made me incredibly grateful for the people in my life from a business and personal perspective. Sometimes it’s easy to feel you don’t have that sort of support when you don’t have family around. “I think any time you have an incident like that you have an evaluation, and think, wow, that could have been the end, what do I want to accomplish now?”

mid heightened market volatility, driven by concerns over China and falling commodity prices, we view Australian utilities favourably, given their predictable earnings, strong cash flow and dividend yields. We consider several factors in the Australian electricity, domestic gas and LNG markets as predominant: 1. Structural constraints on electricity consumption are fading and wholesale demand has reached an inflection point. 2. Growth in LNG exports has seen domestic gas demand increase by more than 200 per cent in the past two years, which will drive local wholesale prices higher and stimulate further infrastructure development. 3. Retail margins are set to increase as regulated tariffs come down, but competition will continue to cap margin expansion. 4. There is no certainty around the direction of oil prices in the near term. Benchmark oil prices continue to deteriorate, and weaker than expected global demand and the lack of an apparent supply response from high cost producers means it is difficult to formulate a positive view on the sector. Within the sector, our first choice is APA Group (buy), which has a history of strong and predictable growth. It also has growth opportunities given its exposure to infrastructure development in Australia. The company has guided to $300–400 million in growth capital being spent each year, at least for the next few years.

Among the merchant utilities, we prefer AGL Energy (accumulate) as it enjoys leverage to improving retail margins and increasing wholesale electricity prices. The company has also announced its exit from the exploration and production of natural gas due to the volatility of commodity prices and long development-lead times. It is also notable that around 8–9 per cent of AGL’s generation comes from renewable sources, while long-term renewable energy certificates have increased in value substantially over the last 12 months. The bulk of Origin Energy’s earnings and valuation come from its retail and generation businesses, but most of the leverage in the stock is generated by movements in the oil price. Origin’s balance sheet is strong enough to withstand sustained low commodity prices, but until oil prices settle, we rate the stock a Hold. In general, we recognise the low-risk nature of the regulated utilities, with AusNet Services (accumulate) our preference due to its solid dividend coverage and attractive valuation. It also has the least regulatory reset risk among its peers. Anthony Ward is an Authorised Representative (no 427051) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. TRAVEL

FRENCH FOOD FORAY Dining in France is one way to get a fussy kid to eat. By Kate Whiting

I

Vineyard at Arbois in the Franche-Comte region of France

n an old stable in the French town of Arbois, four local winemakers are absorbed in hooking grapes together on a frame to make an enormous bunch, which, when finished, will weigh nearly 100 kilograms. One of the men turns to my twoyear-old son and hands him a small bunch of red pinot noir grapes, which make up half of the stripy pattern of red and white varieties on the annual harvest offering to the town’s patron, Saint-Just. The following day, we’ll watch as the Biou (jewel) is paraded through the town and hoisted aloft in the church. But for now, my son’s enjoying gorging on his own miniature version. The winemaker doesn’t know it, but his simple gesture is feeding my plan to broaden my son’s tastebuds, which is why we’re in France. A typical toddler, Ollie’s a picky eater and generally sticks to what he knows. I’m hoping that exposing him to a range of exciting new flavours and textures will help him learn to love good food for life. The Franche-Comte region is on the

mountainous east, sandwiched between Burgundy and Switzerland. It comprises the Jura, Doubs, Haute-Saone, and Territoire de Belfort departments – and it’s in the Jura where we’re staying, in the wine capital Arbois – once home to Louis Pasteur. Besides my parents, who’ve made their second home in a nearby village, you’ll hear very few English accents. The Jura is famous for its hard, salty and flavoursome Comte cheese and its unique wines, including the barrel-aged vin jaune (yellow wine) and sweet vin de paille (straw wine). But where better to start your first culinary adventure in France than at the local market? Arbois has its market every Friday and it’s here Ollie has his first taste of France, with sweet green figs and juicy donut-shaped flat peaches. But the real test comes at lunchtime, when we head to the hills to eat at Le Grapiot in the nearby wine-growing village of Pupillin. Ollie insists on sitting on my lap to eat goujons au comte (choux pastry made with the local cheese) but by the time his fillet of daurade, sauteed in butter, with

Lush setting: Castel Damandre in Arbois

carrots and giant peas arrives, he’s been coaxed into a big-boy chair. He’s also keen to try Grandpa’s puy lentils, which he loves. I plump for the excellent nage de homard – it’s not cheap at 30 euros, but is perhaps the best lobster I’ve ever had. More reasonable is the lunchtime menu for 20 euros, which includes a starter, main, dessert, wine and coffee. The menu enfant is 12 euros for a main, dessert and drink. By the day of the Biou (the first Sunday in September), Ollie has become a high-chair refusenik, which does not bode well. But he does eat the pain au chocolat we buy warm from the

boulangerie in Arbois’ central square, Place de la Liberte, while we’re waiting for the procession. We make for the church of Saint-Just and sit on its steps in time to see the Biou carried past on the shoulders of the four winemakers, heralded by two young violinists. The great and good of Arbois follow it into the church, where it’s hoisted up to the rafters. It will hang there for three weeks, dripping sticky grape juice onto the floor. While nothing can quite match the Biou for excitement, Besancon’s zoo comes close. Set in the Unesco World Heritage Site of Vauban’s Citadel there

are baboons grooming in the moat and goats leaping along the walls. From the turrets, you can see exactly why this 1660s military structure was built where it is – as the town sits in the middle of an oxbow lake. The plan is to dine at the restaurant Brasserie 1802 but in true French fashion, the staff is on strike, says the apologetic manager. So we go instead to the Brasserie du Commerce on the main high street, the only remaining cafe of the Belle Epoque – all floor to ceiling mirrors and grandiose gilded chandeliers – where, when not waving to his infinite reflections, Ollie eats more frites than poulet. We’re staying at Castel Damandre in the village of Les Planches, at the end of the valley through which Arbois’ river Cuisance flows. It looks like a castle, but was in fact an old mill at the foot of the imposing 250-metre-high remote, limestone cliffs that semi-circle the village. Once the sun has dipped, we head back to our room with its four-poster bed and Jacuzzi. Ollie may not be a complete convert to their cuisine, but we’ve all had a culinary adventure in this green corner of France.

re you picking apart the pieces in your life and wondering why you’re not happy? Are little things disturbing you more than they should, causing overreaction? We all have our challenges through life, difficult relationships, traumas and past experiences that have caused grief, and with time, these wounds should heal, we learn and grow from them to become a better person, and hopefully do it better the next time around. When time has passed and old wounds won’t heal, consider what the past experience has done to the biochemistry of your system. Repairing and restoring hormones and nutrients following a stressful period is often overlooked and not often considered as an important component of recovery from stress. During times of stress, we use more nutrients initially to go through the

stressful period, but unless we supply much more of the nutrients required, you will go into a deficit, much like overspending and going into a debt in your bank account. Without replenishing those nutrients, the deficits remain, leaving you unable to feel positive in the future with the inability to produce your happy brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine, not to mention your reproductive and stress hormones cortisol and DHEA, also required to feel happy, energetic, calm under stress, and content. Addressing your past emotionally is one piece of the puzzle, if you’ve never replenished your body nutritionally, moving forward may be an impossible task until you do. MY OPINION

JOBS FOR OUR KIDS

YOUNG AT HEART

Rebecca Grisman says sustainability needs to be balanced with progress if we want our kids to be able to settle here in the future.

Sami Muirhead invites you to become a big kid this Easter – eat, drink, be merry and build a dinosaur garden.

S

o, we all made it. It is the Easter long weekend. I cannot wait to spend the holidays in pyjamas not having to stress if I have enough fresh vegetarian sushi in the fridge and bananas that are not bruised on the shelf to bang in the Bento lunch box the next day for Little Miss Prep. We will be slowing down after a frantic first term and introduction to school. Thankfully, Miss Prep loves school, but this mummy is still missing her little shadow, so I plan to make the most of having her all to myself again, along with her two brothers. We will be hitting the beach this Easter, visiting local parks and maybe even getting to church. But the one altar we will be spending most of our four days at is the temple of white paint. We have a new fence and a new cubby house and our goal is to paint them white and then get to the fun bits: making little curtains for the hideaway and setting it up with a tiny kitchen and a dinosaur corner. Yes, a dinosaur corner. A garden in fact. I do not even know what the heck this is yet, but it sounds like something I am pretty lucky to be doing as an adult. The thought of creating a little nook for T-Rex to rumble with triceratops terribly excites me. I am clearly a bit sleep deprived. But you see, I think we should all build at least one dinosaur garden this Easter, or do the equivalent thing that

keeps us young at heart these holidays. Set a silly goal that does not revolve around cleaning. Do something that is surrounded by pure fun. Push yourself to tick off that bucket list item you have been dreaming about for years. Our front yard now has a sandpit the size of a swimming pool. It looks a bit like a disjointed Disneyland, but boy is it going to be kid heaven. We are totally up the creek when the kids grow up because I cannot think of another use for the sand pit except, well, as a sandpit. Easter seems less demanding than Christmas. There is not the pressure to see every friend you ever made since year two and also deliver gifts to every relative still alive. We do not have to squeeze in several Christmas carol evenings and end of year school break ups. So we can all kick back guilt-free. And eat. And drink. We even get to buy fish and chips guilt-free by reasoning that it is the one time of year many of us don’t eat meat. I feel like we all need the rest. My friends are all tired. Tired from doing too much work and trying to be super mums and dads. So enjoy the holidays whatever you are doing. Stay safe. Charge up the batteries. Pray for some cooler weather so we can drink hot Milo, gorge ourselves on hot cross buns and wear jumpers again. And may you commit to building the version of your own dinosaur garden, whatever your age.

A

key concern 20 years ago for people across the Sunshine Coast region was the ‘brain drain’ of young people away to other cities for study, work and investment of their skills and abilities. I moved here in 1994 to manage market research for the fledgling university and I remember facing thousands of parents and older generations at many community meetings. They hoped to see new futures and new opportunities for their children to remain in the region that they grew up in to work, raise families and reinvest in this community. I spoke to thousands of school leavers about their aspirations and plans. Those 17-year-olds who were so keen to make their mark are now 39. Decades on, this issue has changed only marginally. More young people attend our university, but on graduation most must leave to begin their careers and few return for many years, if at all. So the cycle has altered but the core concern continues. What has really changed, to my surprise, is the community refrain; now people seemingly want things to remain the same. I still attend and coordinate many community meetings and a major sentiment amongst parents and grandparents is to keep the status quo – i.e. say no to change, new infrastructure, new projects or even revamps of old

ones. They understand it also means rejecting new and more employment, investment, services and opportunities. I’ve also heard repeatedly that it’s acceptable their kids and grandkids must leave to earn or study, and that their children subsequently don’t have the chance to, or can’t afford to live here. In 20 years, the concern has turned to preservation over progress. I can qualify that these views are expressed in surveys and forums seeking feedback, so I wonder if the silent majority do not agree but don’t take the time to comment. Personally, a reason I strive for local causes, charities and change is to make the Coast a better place for my family to be. I’m now facing the future too and wondering what job, study and life opportunities my five-year-old will have here. Is it the case that I’ve worked hard to pay a mortgage, build a good business, and volunteered tirelessly in this community for improvements, to have to sell up and relocate to the city to fund and support his future? Is that what it’s all been for? So that one day he might holiday here and marvel at how unchanged it is? If it’s true that we are all responsible for the world we leave for our kids, then we cannot simply stop change and call it sustainability, we must be proactive about shaping the future and clear about who it will benefit.

GO GLAM WITH DESIGNER NAIL POLISH

Scientists find the grey gene Great news – scientists have pinpointed the gene responsible for giving us grey hair and research will soon be underway on developing a treatment to prevent or reverse greying. OK, so it’s not a cure for cancer, but imagine never having to colour your hair again to disguise the greys? Geneticists from University College London discovered the IRF4 gene after studying DNA from more than 6,300 Latin Americans. It is the first study on the genetics of greying hair in humans. Until further research is done, we have two choices: keep colouring, or go grey gracefully like Helen Mirren. She maintains a sophisticated look with up-to-the-minute hairstyles and the occasional wild experiment – like the time she dyed it pink for the 2013 BAFTAs. Go Helen!

Ingredients: • 4 activated charcoal caplets (ask at your local health food store) • ¼ tsp cornstarch • ½ tsp contact lense solution or bottled water • 6-8 drops coconut oil Method: Place contents of the charcoal caplets into a bowl. Add water or contact lense solution and blend. Pour the mixture into a small glass container and let it sit for a hour. Re-use a clean mascara brush or eyebrow brush to apply. MY TIME

Are you a cafe or restaurant owner, chef, grower, muso or venue? Send your news to: mytime@myweeklypreview.com.au

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe has fallen off the wagon just in time to try a new summer ale fit for a holy man.

A

h it sure does feel like it’s been a long time between drinks, friends. Last time we chatted I’d given up the beers for the month of February and interestingly in the process, somehow changed the time continuum to make the shortest month on the calendar feel more like the longest year of my life. During that time as a distraction from my sobriety, I spent every waking minute on social media, I tweeted every 47 seconds, I constantly posted on FB and I Instagrammd like a man

34 My Weekly Preview | March 24, 2016

34.indd 1

possessed. Of course, I couldn’t have made it through this time if it weren’t for the love of my now ex-wife and my four beautiful children whose names I can barely remember. Thanks kids. During ‘NoBrewary’ my anxiety levels went ballistic. My wife said, “Get out and do a workout, it’ll clear your mind”. Sadly, with my current level of fitness, the recovery time from a 60-minute workout is roughly five years. I found I just couldn’t function properly. I couldn’t make decisions, and when I did, I was accused of making bad ones. “Why would you hire a clown and balloon artist for my mother’s funeral?”. “Umm, because the people needed cheering up”, was my reply. Then the hot lady who mothered my children said, “Honestly it’s like you blokes on Earth all have to share the one brain”. I couldn’t even think of a good comeback. To be fair it wasn’t my turn to use the brain. But anyway, all of that hullaballoo was so last month and as we head towards Easter holidays, man it’s so good to be back in the arms of our Lord and saviour

Beersus. I’m feeling so positive about things this month – clearly not as positive as Maria Sharapova but nonetheless, feeling good. About that, I’m not so sure about all the drugs in sport hoo-ha. Does it really matter? I’m one of the only people on Earth who thinks Lance Armstrong is still to be admired. He was taking hardcore drugs and won not one but seven bike races. I don’t know about you, but the last time I rode a bike on drugs I ended up in the neighbour’s swimming pool. As we head towards the school holidays, I’ve got a ripping beer for the Easter break. The Swindler Summer Ale is a limited release that may just stay the course if the demand is there. Jumping on board the summer ale train, the Squires crew have created a little gem that just like the Little Creatures Dog Days, isn’t just for breakfast anymore. The Swindler, so named because James Squire swindled a little land from less deserving ex-convicts for very little moolah, which he then built a brewery on, is as pale as pale gets with a new style of fruity American hops that

creates a light-on- the-palate tropical affair. There’s a citrusy, watermelony vibe to the Swindler, with a touch of malt sweetness and a real bitey bitterness that makes it all come together a treat. Dangerously refreshing and almost too easy to drink at 4.2 per cent, it’s a cracker for our hot and humid weekends. Take it easy though, for if you session drink this baby all day like I did last weekend, you may just vanish for three days before rising again on Sunday in true Easter style. I give the all new James Squire’s Swindler Summer Ale a divine 3.9 out of 5 thumbs up.

THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the AUDI RS3 SPORTBACK

F

oodies like to claim that you ‘eat with your eyes’ – a nod to the importance of good presentation when serving a meal. The theory is that if your eyes are convinced it looks good – like a beautifully charred steak or the golden, bubbling cheese on the top of a lasagne – your mind

ALL CARS D GE PRICE TAG TO Y D & REA SELL

decides the meal’s delicious long before it reaches your tastebuds. By that logic, it must be possible for a car to sound fast. Surely the rumble of a thundering Aussie V8 – or the signature wail of a Ferrari’s exhaust – convinces you that a car is special, even before you drive it.

Likewise, Formula One devotees argue that the current crop of F1 machines are less exciting to watch purely because they make less noise than models past. If you subscribe to this theory, now hear this – a car that’s music to your ears. Audi’s sonorous RS3 Sportback. Five cylinders, one turbocharger and

two mammoth exhaust outlets give this new Audi hotrod a soundtrack to die for. The RS3 thumbs its nose at convention and barks, rather loudly, at those poor, sensible souls who treasure practicality. Not to mention modesty. That’s fine. For those people, there are plenty of Toyota Camrys to drive. But if you’re the kind who’s not afraid to ask for your beef vindaloo curry to be served extra hot, then this little car makes a seriously big impression. That soundtrack – rather sharp and somewhat unpolished for a car wearing the four-ringed Audi badge – originates from deep within the RS3’s potent, five-cylinder, turbo-charged engine. That distinctive five-cylinder note is reminiscent of a car from Audi’s deep past – the iconic S1 rally car that launched the German brand into overnight prominence in the world of motorsport. Close your eyes for a moment and the RS3 sounds hauntingly like that purpose-built racing machine. With its leather seats and fancy stereo, the RS3 is much more civilised than that beast – yet it’s barely less potent in its performance. In just over four angry, awesome seconds the RS3 scrabbles from a continued over>

MOTORING

<from previous page standstill to the speed limit, with those exhausts popping and punctuating the sound and fury. It’s quite a show – and one you’d normally pay north of $100,000 to enjoy. Yet the RS3 costs less than $80-grand to deliver the kind of power and performance that, even a few years ago, would have cost you at least twice that much. Its 2.5-litres punch out 270 kilowatts and 465Nm via the Quattro all-wheeldrive and seven-speed S-Tronic transmission. Astonishingly enough, despite these gaudy numbers the RS3 is not even top of its class. That honour belongs to the ballistic Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG that shades the Audi in almost every respect with its 280kw of power and a 0-100km/h time of just 4.2 seconds. Numbers like these were associated with only the world’s true supercars just a handful of years ago. Yet soon we’ll have three compact-sized cars boasting comparable power and performance. Soon to join that argument is BMW’s first-ever M2 – based upon the 2-series hatchback but with a twin turbocharged six-cylinder engine tweaked by the M-Sport engineers.

Of course, the Audi’s $78,900 pricetag is unquestionably a lot of money for a car that, in its most basic form, retails for less than half that amount. Worth noting, too, is the fact that the donor A3 was voted World Car of the Year just over 12 months ago. So the RS3 comes from impeccable stock. For an unsubtle car, it’s not exactly in your face and is not overtly styled at first glance. It has some flashy black-and-chrome sports alloy wheels – wrapped with some rather low-profile, sticky sports tyres. If you look even more closely you might notice the ‘Quattro’ lettering across the front air dam – signifying not only the German maker’s all-wheel-drive system but also the name for its high-

performance division. The carbon-fibre ceramic brakes are visible if you look closely, too – as is the flatbottomed sports steering wheel and carbon-shelled seats – which are 7kg lighter than the regular buckets. Stroll around the back, though, and things become a little more overt. Namely the two, rather large, oval-shaped exhausts. And, more specifically, the cacaphonous, spine-tingling bark that emits from them when you push the RS3’s start button. That’s when this rather unassuming hatchback reveals its Hyde side. As in Jeckyll and Hyde. Of course, just being fast is of questionable value in a country where the our speed limits mean it will rarely be used beyond about a third of its capabilities. But within those limits, it’s plenty of fun being the first car away from the traffic lights. Which is where that sound comes in. Because even at the most boring of legal speeds, the RS3 can sound like AC/ DC is throwing a concert down the street. Sound good to you?

AUDI RS3 SPORTBACK HOW BIG? At its heart it’s a compact A3 Sportback – but its five doors, decent interior space and reasonable cargo compartment make it surprisingly practical. And it can be driven like a normal, everyday car if you’re careful with the accelerator. HOW FAST? Very. Blindingly. Amazingly. It will reach the speed limit in less time than it takes to say Audi RS3 Sportback. And it will keep accelerating, and exuding its wondrous noise, all the way to the 280km/h electronic limit. HOW THIRSTY? You don’t develop this kind of power and save fuel at the same time. But its 8.1L/100km thirst is not unreasonable for a car that will embarrass most big V8s. HOW MUCH? This depends very much on your point of view. At $78,900 it’s either a very expensive small hatchback, or one of the most affordable supercars ever built.

Our finest selection for your peace of mind. Now at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast.

HELPFUL HINTS Tips to get the right house this Easter long weekend.

WHAT DO YOU WANT? It might sound simple enough but it’s important to list your priorities and hone in on the properties that suit your needs. Do you need four bedrooms and study? Should you allow room for your family to grow? High ceilings, bright and airy, deck, room to install a pool? Identify exactly what it is you are after and it will make your search quicker and easier.

G

et ready, get set, go - the real estate race will be on this weekend as agents gear up for what is tipped to be a busy time for the property market. Traditionally, Easter weekend is a prime time for Coast buyers, and here are My Weekly Preview’s top tips on finding the perfect house for you…

RETHINK YOUR STANDARDS

AURA LAND RELEASE

It might sound odd but sometimes you should lower your standards. Don’t negotiate on the important things like house size or location but if the biggest problem is that the interior needs a bit of a paint, or perhaps some new carpet, don’t pass up the opportunity. According to new data from Mortgage Choice, more than one third of Australian homeowners plan to renovate their home in the next 12 months. Renovations can range in cost and size, so don’t rule it out.

The $5 billion Caloundra South development is well underway with plans and pricing for the first suburb released by Stockland. The first land release has lots ranging in size from 250-square metres to 576-square metres and will be priced from $192,800 to $275,400 when the sites are released to the public on April 23. The new suburb will be located on the northern border of Caloundra South, or Aura as it is being marketed, surrounded by conservation areas and parklands. Covering just 8 per cent of Aura’s 24 hectare site, Stockland will sell lots in successive stages with the suburb completed in the next five years. It will eventually comprise 1560 home sites which is comparable in size to Stockland’s Brightwater community at Mountain Creek.

LOCATION Narrow down your search by pinpointing exactly what area of the Coast you want to live or invest in. Those with kids should consider the school district zone and people who are buying for investment might want to consider public transport access.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

It’s on like Donkey Kong! Bells Beach I mean. Swell is on the way, nothing massive but certainly contestable. Cannot wait to see Stuart Kennedy go nuts on his bat wing board. Hopefully Julian can kick start some decent points to get his campaign on the way. All in all should be fun to watch. Now for us struggling pros in waiting… not so much. Seems pretty steady with what is unfolding. Small waves with south-east winds. Might be a good time for an Easter egg hunt or join a church and pray for some decent waves! Have a safe Easter peeps !

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies along the Twin Waters banks on the night high tides. Bream and flathead are taking baby blue pillies and white bait at the southern end of Goat Island. You can get trevally and chopper tailor at the motorway bridge on lures. SURF: Dart and sand whiting are being caught on cured worms at the Maroochy Bar. You can get chopper tailor and flathead along Maroochy North Shore using baby blue pillies. Shovel nosed rays and sharks are being caught at Alex Headland on mullet fillet. OFFSHORE: Water temp 24 degrees. Close in reefs for Maori cod, moses perch, squire and sweetlip with snapper, pearl perch and trevally on the Barwon Banks. You can find spanner crabs east of Coolum. You can get Spanish mackerel on blue and purple trolling lures. FRESHWATER: Somerset is working well for bass, golden perch and jew with live shrimp and deep diving lures the best. Locally, Lake Macdonald and Borumba have both been returning saratoga, bass and Mary River cod on flies and lures. Best wishes for a safe and happy Easter to all.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Are you operating on professional auto-pilot? When it comes to work don’t be afraid to throw out the rule book and start anew. Fresh ideas and innovative thinking will take you far. But make sure you include your partner in your plans.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Is the grass looking a lot greener elsewhere? Find innovative ways you can add more passion and pizzazz to your life, whether through a challenging hobby, a stimulating new course of study or an exciting future trip.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Wednesday’s stars boost your brain power and rev up your attention to detail. So it’s a great day to power through paperwork, do research, edit work and fine-tune important details. Whereas Thursday and Friday are the days to be much more spontaneous.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] This week the planetary focus is firmly on close relationships, as you navigate your way through a romantic problem or a family fiasco. The best way to handle interpersonal issues? Take the time to talk things through in a sensible way. And don’t forget to spread some Libran peace.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] When it comes to professional matters, don’t obsess so much Scorpio! If a problem crops up this week, deal with it and then move on. And avoid getting stuck in a stultifying rut. Aim to shake things up, as you bring more fun and spontaneity into your daily routine.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] This week you’re keen to nurture old friendships – and attract exciting new acquaintances into your world. But avoid negative thinkers who’ll just bring you down. Instead, strive to surround yourself with positive people who encourage your talents.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Steady Saturn (your ruling planet) forms a marvellous aspect with Mercury (planet of the mind) so it’s a wonderful week for serious thinking and concentrated mental work. But resist the temptation to be hyper-critical and fastidiously fussy.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Your wonderfully idiosyncratic mind is activated this week. So you’ll tread a fine line between having lightning flashes of inspiration, and making contrary and controversial comments. Think before you speak! Words have the power to hurt or heal, so use them wisely.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Hey Pisces – don’t sit around waiting for your professional fortunes to magically change. With practical, persistent Saturn moving slowly through your career zone, it’s time to stop procrastinating, roll up your sleeves, and get the job done … no matter how long it takes!

Solve all the clues and reveal the eight-letter word spelled down the middle of the grid.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Prepare for a wonderful week when you can dream big dreams and aspire to spectacularly ambitious schemes for the future (followed by lots of hard work and elbow grease). Your aspirations have a better chance of morphing into reality if you form joint ventures.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Don’t pre-plan and organise the week too much Taurus. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and situations can change at a moment’s notice so try your best to be a flexible and adaptable bull. Listen to the wise words of advice from a trusted mentor or close friend.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Mental creativity is high (with the potential for fabulous flashes of inspiration) but don’t blurt out something totally inappropriate. Hasty words can wound and – if you don’t self-edit – then you could end up with an argument on your hands.

THE LAST WORD

LIFE ON MARS Richard O’Leary asks: if you had the chance to travel to Mars, would you do it?

W

ould you fly to Mars if you were given the opportunity? Oh, I forgot to mention it would be one way. Seven Australians are among the 100 shortlisted for just such a mission to the red planet, and by the end of this year they will find out if they have made the final 24. The Dutch-based Mars One Project is a private consortium that plans to populate Mars with humans – the first colonists, a team of four (two women and two men) will land in 2023 – with more groups to follow every two years thereafter. Plenty of experts in the space industry establishment have been at pains to point out there is little likelihood the endeavour will ever get off the ground (excuse the pun), but regardless of the chances of its success, it does raise some interesting questions.

Meet that need to do something bigger than myself. Quench my thirst to explore (how many times have I read history books and bemoaned that fact that there is nothing left to discover – thanks Magellan and Columbus. But there would be a few obstacles to overcome. I have a fear of flying (something I’ve been able to overcome in planes – but being strapped into a rocket ship may be somewhat traumatic). I can be terribly indecisive (I love the idea of a tattoo but just know that if I got one I’d change my mind about three seconds after the ink dried). I don’t know how my mum would handle her eldest son flying one way to Mars (she found me living overseas difficult). So a definite maybe for me. What about you? roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.

Is it ethical to settle on another planet when we have inflicted so much damage to our own? Is it humane to only offer a one-way ticket? What sort of person accepts the challenge to turn their back on family, friends and life as we know it to fly on what could well be a suicide mission? And are they the right sort of people to actually send on this sort of expedition? The biggest question of all – would you do it? My answer today is easy – no. I am married and have two sons. My commitment is to them – on my list of priorities, interplanetary travel is light years away. But had you asked me this question before I had children, my answer may be different… hypothetically. The proposition does tick a few boxes. It would allow me to: Make my mark on the world (a world at least).
