bout 12 months ago I had my first flying lesson. It was one of the most nerve-racking, yet enjoyable experiences of my life when I was handed control of the light aircraft shortly after take-off from Caloundra Airport. It was hard to believe that everyone wasn’t doing it. Well it appears many people are, and not just joy flights – aviation has become a big business on the Sunshine Coast. Our cover story puts you in the pilot seat for a fly-by of one of the region’s fastest growing industries. Also this week you get to travel to Chicago, test drive Citroen’s new people mover, ride a local lad’s wave of success on Bondi Rescue and have a quick chat with the Coast’s hairdressing guru. As always, there’s local news and views, all the latest in the style stakes, some great tips on life and beauty, tonnes of tech info, and plenty of property, including a couple of new multimillion-dollar developments that have just got off the ground. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

LIKE YOUR STYLE

Sharan Doyle-Berry is preparing the Coast’s next generation of hairdressers as Lead Vocational Teacher, Hairdressing TAFE Queensland East Coast. FIRST JOB?

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

Hairdressing apprentice with Stefan Hair Fashions.

I don’t live by any regrets, I strive to always do the best I can do, be the best person I can be, and make the most of any situation.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Two major projects at the moment. The first is an alumni selection criterion for USQ [University of Southern Queensland] as I was nominated for professional alumni 2016. The second, I am undertaking my Diploma of Training Design and Development.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Husband Scott who works for Qantas Airways, daughter Erin works at Australia Zoo (head dingo trainer).

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

Shaz – I really only get called Sharan at home or amongst friends, when I am in trouble.

FIRST CAR? Vauxhall (showing my age now).

FAVOURITE BOOK? The Great Gatsby and Pillars of the Earth. I know it sounds boring, but both are excellent books.

FAVOURITE SONG? Eagles – any song.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? When I was an apprentice, Stefan gave this advice to me and it has stuck with me ever since: To never give up, and always be kind considerate and treat others with empathy and respect as it will always come back to you threefold.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Twenty-five years. I live at Kawana.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Lifestyle.

FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST? Caloundra area and the Glass House Mountains.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Congestion on roads – look at long-term planning and infrascture for our increasing population. Everyone wants to live on the Coast, and why wouldn’t they?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Caloundra to watch sunsets at Bulcock Beach.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Hard question, as I have had a few actually. One that springs to mind is seeing my daughter as primary school captain and then as high school captain. Very proud parent moments.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? A turning point in my life was flying to Sydney, over 35 years ago now, to have my first interview with Qantas as an international flight attendant. Qantas changed my life and gave me a different perspective on life, culture and people; all of these have helped shaped my perspective on living.

Achievements as a hairdresser – winning multiple hairdressing awards with Stefan Hair Fashions. Achievements in my educational arena – achieving two masters, one in education and one in training. Education was a research degree, so a PhD, may be around the corner – well in the next 10 years maybe. But my most recent achievements, in which I am proud to represent hairdressing and TAFE Queensland East Coast, include Regional/State Qld Training Awards 2015 Trainer or Teacher of the Year, runner up at Australian Training awards, and nominee for 2015 Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year – all very humbling.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Seeing a student outside of TAFE Queensland East Coast, who is now a salon owner/apprentice and remembers their great time at TAFE hairdressing. Also, when I am at the gym doing RPM at 5:45am.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Never enough hours in a day, especially on the weekends.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Effective time management – and balancing work/life.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Stay focused and use empathy towards others daily. Also to exercise that little bit harder as after 50, you can’t just eat that extra ice-cream and pizza then run it off in the morning. Hahahaha.

TEA OR COFFEE? Tea – with a teaspoon of milk.

NRL OR AFL? NRL of course, should this even be a question? Go Broncos and Maroons!

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS

Our aviation and aerospace sector is primed for takeoff – but more investment is needed for it to reach its potential. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

“Aviation and aerospace is one of seven high value industries identified in the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy as the keys to future economic growth and employment opportunities” Mark Jamieson, Mayor

t more than 14,500 kilometres from Caloundra Aerodrome, the American state of Kentucky is a long way from home for Will Shrapnel. But when you are building a business you go where the work is and recently, it has been in Louisville. Shrapnel is one in a cohort of Sunshine Coast business owners and employees who last month journeyed 24 hours to the great southern city all in the name of education, business and regional profiling. The HAI Heli-Expo annually attracts around 20,000 people from around the globe, including 700 exhibitors who fill a convention centre space the size of 15 football fields. It injects around $9.5 million into the host city’s economy and brings aviation royalty such as Kurt Robinson, president of the world’s leading manufacturer of civil helicopters, together with people like Shrapnel, who is steadily building one of the Sunshine Coast’s most successful businesses. It was 14 years ago, at the age of 25, when Shrapnel embarked on his journey and launched HeliMods. As a third generation Sunshine Coast resident, he grew up dreaming of a career in aviation, spending much of his time designing, building and flying model aircraft. With his sights set firmly on his future, Shrapnel began work as an aircraft 12 My Weekly Preview | April 1, 2016

technician on helicopters and while studying engineering and business at the University of Queensland, he completed his trade. “At that time, local maintenance companies were experiencing difficulties in certifying repairs and modifications made to helicopters during maintenance,’’ Shrapnel says. “The idea of HeliMods was created. A local helicopter maintenance company provided me with some space in their hangar… the space was a spare storeroom with holes in the roof, walls and floor. Armed only with a $5000 credit card, I had

America, Canada and Australia. Late last year, Shrapnel and his team were recognised for their work on an $85 million fleet of AW-139 helicopters which were remodelled and fitted out with medical equipment for Ambulance Victoria and RACQ’s Careflight. It was a huge achievement and one that put the Coast’s aviation sector on the map. What many people don’t realise is the thousands of hours of labour – the blood, sweat and tears – that went into this project; a project that ultimately assists in saving people’s lives.

“Imagine if the Sunshine Coast was the centre of training, operations and repair of UAV. We need to start being smart and innovative” Terry O’Brien

just enough funds to purchase a computer and a desk.” It has taken hard work and tens of thousands of hours, but this husband and father to six children under the age of nine, has now achieved his dream of producing one of the best helicopter modification companies in the world, completing work for companies in

“It was probably one of the biggest projects for medical fit-outs completed in this country to date and it’s significant even globally, for the amount of work and the amount we achieved within the given time,’’ Shrapnel tells My Weekly Preview. “It makes me proud to deliver that out of this region in such a modern, progressive environment.’’

Weighing in on the project, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says to have a Sunshine Coast business selected to perform the vital fit-outs is a positive sign for the economy. “(It) is yet another example of a major high tech company growing and succeeding here on the Coast. Will is an outstanding local business leader and his team of around 30 specialist staff are at the forefront in the development of our local high value aviation and aerospace sector which contributes around $124.6 million to the regional economy and provides more than 500 local jobs. “Aviation and aerospace is one of seven high value industries identified in the Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy as the keys to future economic growth and employment opportunities.” The recent trip to the Heli-Expo proves there is plenty of opportunity on the broader global market, something the Sunshine Coast can, and should, tap into, Shrapnel says. Caloundra resident and aviation engineer Chris Kaminski agrees and says, despite downturns in the industry due to the GFC, it has remained viable and will continue to grow southeast Queensland’s economy. Kaminski, who began his career at the Caloundra Aerodrome and has trained in both America and Italy, is the Queensland myweeklypreview.com.au

council, has worked. But a long-term solution will be required, Thomas says. “We bought here so we expect some aircraft noise,” says Thomas. “The helicopter problem experienced some time ago has gone away. (Plans to expand the aerodrome) all sounds great, I have no problem with that, but sooner or later everyone knows that airports and population centres don’t mix. But at this stage we are happy with how things are progressing.’’ Sunshine Coast Aviation Taskforce chair Terry O’Brien is excited by the progress and future plans. He says encouraging new industries such as unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology is a key focus. “Imagine if the Sunshine Coast was the centre of training, operations and repair of UAV… some of these opportunities might not come from the traditional maintenance but from designing and flying the UAVs. You could have an office sitting up here where someone is piloting an aircraft between France and Germany,’’ O’Brien says. “UAV is just one aspect of it. Lots of the aircraft in the industry are old and with the advent of the recreational aviation area, we’ve now got newer aircraft that’s rekindled the interest. “We need to start being smart and innovative in how we do things. “One of my main goals is to promote aviation and as one of the taskforce members is to create pathways of education from kindy into secondary and tertiary and into employment on the Coast. With growing the technology comes extra, additional businesses but it is also growing the value of aviation and creating jobs. There is no point educating them and putting them in a car to drive to Brisbane. “It’s a huge industry that you don’t hear much about… you’ve got businesses like Becker Helicopters who have got a $20 million contract. McDermott Aviation are also huge. They just go about their

manager for one of Australia’s largest engineering and sales firms, Heliflite. He is now based at Redcliffe Airport but travels everywhere from Western Australia to Caloundra, Mt Isa, Brisbane and China for his job and has worked on aircraft for Emergency Management Queensland, Careflight and alongside Shrapnel on the Ambulance Victoria fleet. He says the Heli-Expo reaffirmed his belief in the longevity of the industry following networking sessions with the likes of Kurt Robinson and the management team of Marenco SwissHelicopter. “Marenco is one of the next generations of helicopters with technology not yet seen by many Australian engineers and pilots,’’ Kaminski says. “All of these guys, the leaders of the global industry, are talking about the future of the market within our country and they see Australia as a viable investment. If we can support these companies and bring their product here to southeast Queensland, it’s a huge financial and technological achievement for the industry. We need to foster the civil industry’s growth as a potential employer for future generations. The possibility for growth is there but support, a forwardthinking approach and sustainable planning is needed.’’ Doing just this is the goal of the council-created Sunshine Coast Aviation Taskforce, which offers support to an industry that has traditionally been plagued by controversy surrounding residential noise issues and development. While the Sunshine Coast Airport has been the focus, with a $350 million expansion on the table, Caloundra has been a hub of uncertainty until recently. The Queensland Government’s 2006 South East Queensland Regional Plan proposed the relocation of the facility so the site could be developed as a new urban centre for Caloundra. The plan drew criticism from businesses and support from neighbouring residents.

Will Shrapnel of HeliMods Following four years of discussions, the government and Sunshine Coast Council confirmed in 2010 that the aerodrome would stay put for the foreseeable future. Businesses were offered revised lease terms and the council prepared a draft master plan to guide future development. The council document states that operations at Caloundra are confined to helicopters and light fixed wing aircraft and that public transport passenger operations are not planed in the forecast period. The master plan outlines an expansion of the lease areas with the potential to expand up to 6.9 hectares. Stage one of the plan specifically focuses on the creation of three hectares of new aviation business area and development of a heavy helicopter landing pad. Bellvista and Bells Reach Community Association president Les Thomas says concerns over noise issues created by aircraft have dissipated. In response to resident concerns, Sunshine Coast Council developed a policy to provide residents with guidelines for aircraft based at Caloundra Airport. The Fly Neighbourly Agreement, a non-enforceable gentleman’s agreement between aerodrome companies and the

businesses and are quiet achievers.” Shrapnel is further proof that basing a business on the Sunshine Coast doesn’t hinder success. However, he says it’s vital that council, schools and the community work together to retain local talent for the benefit of this region. “We need to make sure that local kids with an interest in aviation know there are exciting careers to be had here on the Coast. This awareness can help kids better apply themselves to their schooling to make sure they get the marks they need for entry into the technical trades or tertiary studies in engineering or aviation. “We also need to make sure that our region is competitive with other regions that are proactively working to grow in this sector. We have some great lifestyle advantages around our location, however if we want to see this industry succeed in our region, conditions will also need to be right for businesses to invest and grow in and around our local airports.”

FAST FACTS • The aviation and aerospace sector contributes around $124.6 million to the regional economy. • It provides more than 500 local jobs. • There are about 70 aviation businesses on the Coast. • Caloundra Aerodrome and Sunshine Coast Airport are owned by the council. • Caloundra has an activity of around 40,000 movements of smaller aircraft and helicopters each year. • This is forecast to increase to 84,000 per year by 2030. • In regards to commercial aviation, Sunshine Coast Airport is the fastest growing airport in the country. • From December 2015 to February 2016, 244,708 passengers used the flight services.

The wider community is being called on to support Burnside High School’s STEMM program, which provides education and mentoring for teenage mothers. STEMM is supported by Queensland Education but it costs an additional $100,000 a year to fund the program. Caloundra Men’s Shed, Caloundra Rotary Club, Bunnings and Cabots have joined forces to build and raffle a cubby house to raise money for the program. This is the second cubby house the Men’s Shed has constructed for STEMM. The first was for STEMM’s children’s playground. Tickets are being sold at Bunnings, drawn on April 16.

Moore has various policy priorities ranging from restoring political accountability, to tackling unemployment and nurturing innovators.

STUDENTS GET THE CHOP Eights girls from Immanuel Lutheran College sacrificed nearly two metres of hair last week when they cut off their ponytails to raise much needed funds for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. A group of Year 12 boys also volunteered to have their legs waxed to assist in reaching the college’s fundraising goal of $4500. College principal Colin Minke said everyday, 34 Australians were diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma.

The Chicago River is a jewel

Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, Chicago

SEE CHICAGO IN THREE DAYS Check out Chicago’s unique brand of blues, jazz, art and architecture. By Claudia Steiner

I

t’s a vibrant, electrifying city, one that inspired songs such as Sinatra’s My Kind of Town (Chicago Is), a US centre of the arts and sports that offers many top-rated restaurants. Chicago, on the southwestern shore

of Lake Michigan, boasts sculptures by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miro, towering skyscrapers by famous architects, expansive parks, fantastic museums, and blues and jazz music in the bars. Here’s how to see and do it all in three days.

1. CHICAGO RIVER BOAT EXCURSION FOR ARCHITECTURE BUFFS In bygone days, the Chicago River was like a stinking sewer. Early residents built their houses facing away from the river because it stank so much. Today,

the river is a jewel and one of the top addresses for apartments that, overlooking the scene, cost a fortune to buy or rent. An excursion boat of the Architecture Foundation takes visitors on a tour that shows a city in transition – old warehouses that have been converted to exclusive apartments and huge skyscrapers such as the Willis Tower. At 442 metres, the building by architect Fazlur Khan (1929-82) is the second-tallest in the United States.

“I would love to show you the Astor Street District,” a man named Wally calls out to visitors. He is a volunteer working for Chicago Greeter, an organisation where local residents show their city to tourists – for free. On this particular day, Wally is showing a district of elegant brownstone buildings, art-deco houses and historic residents of Chicago’s high society. Among others, there is the first Playboy Mansion, where men’s magazine publisher Hugh

Hefner hung out. Built in 1899, it has about 70 rooms. Then there is the Public Hotel, in former days called the Ambassador East, the place where Frank Sinatra stayed when in town.

3. RECREATION AND ART IN MILLENNIUM PARK Millennium Park, opened in 2004, is an oasis of greenery in the middle of the city. Crowds of people will surge into the park in the summer for concerts in the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. On the park’s edge is Crown Fountain, where two towers each about 15 metres high project videos of

peoples’ faces, with water pouring out of their mouths. Arguably the most popular spot for selfies is at Cloud Gate and its striking bean-shaped sculpture by British artist Anish Kapoor. The locals simply call the shining stainless-steel object The Bean – for fairly obvious reasons.

4. THE BLUES AND JAZZ BAR SCENE For those who like blues and jazz, Chicago is heaven. In the downtown area, musicians will often set up their drum kits and play for the passing crowds, while typical Chicago Blues music can be heard coming from the city’s many bars and restaurants. The city’s blues and jazz history reads like a hall of fame of top musicians such as Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon and Little Walter. Some top spots to head to are Buddy Guy’s Legends, Andy’s Jazz Club and the Chicago B.L.U.E.S. bar.

5. WINING AND DINING Chicago’s dining scene is international and the choice of restaurants is huge – as are the portions served. A tasty breakfast, be it sweet pancakes or ham and eggs awaits hungry visitors at the Wildberry. Steak lovers will head to Gene and Georgetti’s, established in 1941. Those who like oysters, crabs and fish dishes will seek out Shaw’s Crab House,

where in the evening there is always live music in the bar area. Visitors will want to try the legendary Chicago-style pan pizza, thick as a quiche. Bacino’s restaurant is a good spot.

6. ART ATTACK Everywhere you go in Chicago, you’re bound to run into some open-air artwork. At Daley Plaza there is a sculpture by Pablo Picasso, and at Brunswick Plaza the one by Miro. Of the city’s museums, the Art Institute Chicago is the most internationally renowned, with works by Claude Monet, Marc Chagall, Henri Matisse, Picasso and Gerhard Richter. Also a must for art lovers is the Museum of Contemporary Art, with a collection that includes works by Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol and Francis Bacon.

7. BREATHTAKING VIEWS FROM ABOVE Those seeking a breathtaking view of the huge city have two skyscrapers in the downtown area to choose from. At the 360 Chicago, a viewing area on the 94th floor offers a fantastic panorama of Lake Michigan and the Navy Pier. Then there is the skydeck on the 103rd floor of the Willis Tower – 412 metres up. For an adrenaline thrill there are glass-floored balconies with straight-down views.

PROFILE

ACTION JACKSON

Mooloolaba surf lifesaver Jackson Doolan has been plucked from obscurity and thrown into the international spotlight as one of the new recruits for the 2016 season of Channel 10’s hit show Bondi Rescue. Words: Leigh Robshaw

J

ackson Doolan can’t believe his luck. The 23-year-old surf lifesaver from Mooloolaba moved to Sydney in July last year to study marketing at Macquarie University and be closer to his girlfriend, Katherine. When he applied for a part-time job as a surf lifesaver with Waverley Council, he never imagined in his wildest dreams he’d be starring in Channel 10s popular reality show, Bondi Rescue. “There were a lot of applications and it all came down to a fitness test we did in September,” he says. “I did quite well and I was put on as a lifeguard at Bondi. I wasn’t aiming to be on the show, I just wanted to find some work while I was studying. I did three months and then pretty much found out they were going to start filming for Bondi Rescue in the middle of December. “I’m pinching myself about it. My friends telling me I’m a TV star doesn’t really make sense. I’m just a normal guy from the Sunshine Coast trying to get by in the big smoke. It’s been the best experience of my life, I’m having so much fun and I’ve made a lot of friends. I’ve become good friends with a lot of the more experienced lifeguards. We’re good mates.” As a Nipper at Alexandra Headland and a competitor in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships up to the age of 19, Doolan grew up watching Bondi Rescue. “I idolised a few of the lifeguards on the show and I remember thinking, damn it would be cool to be on that show – and now I’m mingling with some of those people I idolised five or ten years ago. I was quite shy when I first moved down here and first got put on the show. I was sitting with guys I thought were somewhat celebrities and before I knew it they were my workmates. “All the boys took me in and they’re the most down-to-earth guys you’ll ever meet. When I walked in I thought there might be a few egos getting around, but they’re just nice people who are helping the community and were lucky enough to get a show like Bondi Rescue.” Bondi is not only Australia’s most famous beach, it’s also one of the most dangerous. Founded in 1907, it claims to be home to the world’s first official surf life saving club. With up to 40,000 people on the beach on a busy day, many of them tourists with no knowledge of the conditions and the unseen hazards, the lifesavers have their work cut out for them. It’s perfect fodder for the reality TV show, which is screened in 100 countries and is

even more popular overseas than it is here. “I did a rescue with one of the bosses, Dean,” says Doolan, recalling a particularly dramatic moment. “We were patrolling between the flags and a large sandbank collapsed and created a flash rip off the side of the flags, and about 30 people found themselves in trouble. It was just Dean and I down there. People were terrified, they were getting taken out to sea in a strong rip. They couldn’t quite understand what had happened; one minute they were standing there and the next minute they were getting swept out to sea. Dean and I were just going for it. We had about two minutes to get them out and went in and out five times each on our boards. It was exhausting.”

Doolan fell victim to the dangerous conditions himself while patrolling a neighbouring beach and has only recently recovered. “Halfway through the season I cracked my ribs performing a rescue at Tamarama. I rolled my board when there was a big swell on. My board slipped and I ended up with broken ribs. In the middle of January I was off work completely for two weeks and couldn’t move. I was up in the tower for the rest of the summer. I’m finally back at work now and back to normal duties as of the start of last week. It’s awesome to be back, I was going stir crazy.” Celebrity appearances are a regular feature of the show, with Prince Harry, Paris Hilton, Heidi Klum and Richard Branson among many who’ve popped in for cameos. But the biggest thrill for Doolan was meeting Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull two weeks ago. “It was a really rainy, miserable day, so there was only a small crowd,” he says. “He had a meeting at North Bondi RSL and he came across the road. He knew the cameras were there and he came over and shook our hands and I wished him well. I’m a big fan and my mum is a massive fan, so she wouldn’t have been happy if I didn’t grasp that opportunity.” Doolan says he and his colleagues are approached for photos every day and are usually happy to oblige. “A lot of people from Europe and Asia approach us for photos. We get people knocking on the door of the tower trying to get inside. You have to police it a little. We have a job to do and they just think we’re celebrities. When we’re busy, we’re flat out and we don’t have time for photos” Doolan spent the Easter break at his family home in Mooloolaba and says his parents are “super proud” of what he has achieved. He will graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in marketing next year and he also runs his own plumbing pipe supplying business. He hopes to make his mark in business one day, but for now he’s content to ride the wave of international stardom. “I have no intention to stop working at Bondi,” he says. “I feel as though it’s the most enjoyable job you could have in the world. You get to work on one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia and you have a lavish lifestyle, but at the same time I’m trying to keep my two feet placed on the ground. I do have other ambitions in my life. It’s been a crazy journey and I’m only just getting started.”

A gift for living

If you’re aged 50-74 you’ll be sent a free bowel cancer screening kit. The kit is simple to use and can detect bowel cancer before any symptoms appear. Around 80 Australians die of bowel cancer every week, but if detected early, up to 90% of cases can be successfully treated. So be sure to complete and return your kit. It’s a gift that could save your life. If you’re over 74 talk to your GP. By 2020 people aged 50-74 will receive a kit every two years.

MY OPINION

TOO OLD TO PLAY THE FIELD

DIRTY DEEDS

Nugget has some tips for sports stars to make a graceful transition away from their chosen sport before things get messy.

Sami Muirhead is okay with the interior of her car being a disaster zone. All that’s missing is a coffee machine and a scented candle.

I

f there is one job I really do not like it is washing the car. Apparently I have been doing it wrong my entire life, as a report has come out saying you should never ever use dishwashing liquid. Who knew? The study also showed an alarming number of people (32 per cent) find washing the car a rewarding and relaxing task. People! A rewarding and relaxing task is watching an entire season of any of The Real Housewives series on TV in your pyjamas while Facebooking and eating a block of chocolate, washed down with a bottle of wine. The experts say we should also use a toothbrush on those really dirty spots in our vehicles and we should use a micro fibre mitten and wash top to bottom. When I asked my husband about this he said of course we should use a mitten and wash top to bottom, because water runs down. I am talking about cars here. I must admit, ever since I managed to snag my husband, I have not put my pedicured paw into a bucket of suds to wash our family wagon. Our wedding vows should have said: “To have and to hold from this day forward, for better or worse, for richer or poorer, to chamois for Sami; to wash every weekend; and to keep the bonnet free of bird droppings”. How romantic! But a clean car charter does cause us quite a few, well, marital moments, shall we say. My husband is a

car dealer and huge car enthusiast. I am the same as many parents and use our car as a taxi, an educational vessel (we listen to Playschool on the CD), a babysitting service, a relaxation destination and as a mobile cafe. Therefore, the interior of my car does my husband’s head in. He does not understand how it is easier to create world peace than have a tidy car. We have about 200 sultanas hiding behind the baby seats and we always seem to have empty milk bottles curdling in the heat. It makes for a crusty car full of odd socks and crumbs and one frustrated husband. And then there are the school bags in the boot cramped next to the swimming bags and ballet costumes and footballs and the nappy bag and the picnic rug and the books and the spare dog leads. There could be a dead lizard or two and I am pretty sure there are still some hash browns from McDonalds. But one thing my car is lacking is a coffee machine and a dash to place a fancy French candle. Champagne and fig. That is the scent of my favourite candle. I could make myself a latte on the school run and burn my luxe candle and drown out the screaming and fighting. Perhaps next time I have dinner with all our car loving friends, I will float my idea. No doubt they will continue to think I am a genius. It is funny how they never actually voice that opinion to my face.

Open Day

A

s you’re sitting down to read this column with a nice cup of tea and an Iced VoVo, North Melbourne Kangaroos legend Brent Harvey is one game into his 21st season in the AFL and Brisbane Broncos Captain Corey Parker is going strong in a career that started in 2001 when unleaded petrol was 86c a litre and we thought a Kardashian was a bedside table from IKEA. These two legends are as rare as a clean urine sample at Maria Sharapova’s place, because they are well over the age of 30 and are still at the absolute top of their game. Unfortunately, many a great athlete has gone one season too far, like M.A.S.H, when Alan Alda started directing and it got all preachy, and there are a few simple ways to tell if Father Time is getting the better of you.

NOTHING BUT THE TOOTH Mouth guards are an essential item for any footballer, especially those with a penchant for getting smacked in the choppers, but if you have no need for one because all of your teeth are sitting safely in the locker room in a glass of water, its time to start picking cake designs for your retirement party.

WHAT TIME? Live sport in prime time is a reality of our modern media dollar driven world, with many games not starting until well after

8pm. If this is going to be a problem because its three hours after your bedtime, perhaps it’s the perfect moment to hang up the boots.

STAR OF THE WIRELESS Making a seamless transition away from the game is an absolute given if your debut was telecast on the radio only. Not because it wasn’t your team’s week for the TV game, but because it was still several years before the wonder of TV was to grace our shores.

VIDEO KILLED THE FOOTBALL STAR Video sessions are used by all teams to analyse weaknesses in an opposition’s game plan, but when you get a call from the coach inviting you to a video session and you secretly hope you will be watching old episodes of JAG or A Touch of Frost, start planning the testimonial dinner, champ.

SENIOR IN EVERY WAY Senior Player is a tag that is attached to any footballer who has played more than 100-odd games. It’s a mark of respect. But when it is a title given to you by the tax department and it affects how much you pay for a public transport or a trip to the movies, Tiger, now is the perfect time to start jotting notes for that tear-filled farewell speech.

Nugget is a sports fanatic who you can hear more from on Zinc 96.1.

MY OPINION

MORE TO ACHIEVE Newly re-elected mayor, Mark Jamieson, thanks the Sunshine Coast for its continued support of the council’s progressive agenda.

N

ow that the 2016 local government elections are behind us, it’s important to put on the record my personal thanks to the Sunshine Coast community. The overwhelming vote of confidence that I received as mayor, and for our councillors who sought re-election, was a validation of what we had been working on over the previous four years – and our plans for the future. Our residents have shown great support and faith in what we have on our progressive agenda. We took seriously and respected the trust placed in us by the people of the Sunshine Coast in 2012 and will continue to do so over the next four years. By any measure, we have been a strong, united and effective council – one that has not shied away from dealing with difficult and complex matters. We will continue to make decisions in the best interests of this region. And we will have the foresight and determination to take decisions that shape a stronger, more prosperous and more sustainable future for our residents. These decisions will have a positive impact on those who live here today and those who will live here tomorrow. Decisions like building our own solar farm that will mean by next year, our council will be offsetting 100 per cent of

its electricity needs with energy generated from a renewable source. We will be the only council in Queensland to do so – and what a fantastic way to demonstrate our credentials as Australia’s most sustainable region. Decisions like pursuing a cable protection zone declaration for the Sunshine Coast – an initiative which will transform the economy of both our region and Queensland in the future. We are also determined to expand our conservation estate, which we increased by 16 per cent during the previous four-year term. This is one of the greatest assets of our region, protecting sensitive habitat and environmental corridors for generations to come. Our longer term councillors will no doubt attest to the fact that being a local government representative is a constant learning journey. Every day we learn something new, acquire new information and hear of a different idea or approach that we had not previously contemplated. We look forward to continuing to engage with our community through to 2020 as we strive to become a smart region that is unparalleled in its lifestyle and natural assets, where people choose to live because of outstanding employment and learning opportunities and a great way of life.

Australian consumers have a preference for salononly results – with research finding one in three Australians went to the hairdresser in the last four weeks. A In other words, 6.2 million Aussies over the age of 14 paid for a hairdressing service within the last month. That is 32 per cent compared to the 21 per cent that bought home colouring products within the past six months. A further 25 per cent of men and 38 per cent of women enjoyed a professional haircut, style or colour, while only 11 per cent of men and 31 per cent of women dyed their hair at home. Even then, at-home hair users are divided by age – older women prefer professional treatment, with 52 per cent visiting the hairdresser within a four-week period. In comparison, 37 per cent of those aged 35 to 49 are more likely to dye their hair at home. Brands wise, women’s favourite brands for at-home products include L’Oréal (26 per cent), Garnier (13 per cent), Schwarzkopf (11 per cent) and Decoré (two per cent).

MY LIFE

NOT SO SWEET Not convinced you should quit sugar? James Colquhoun from Food Matters gives you five of the most convincing reasons.

R

efined sugar is not doing your body any favours. Quitting it however, can do wonders. Here are five reasons to help you rid yourself of the nasty refined sugar lurking in your life. 1. BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION Sugar consumption directly impacts the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels and can lead to insulin resistance, hypo-and hyperglycemia, pre-diabetes and diabetes. Uncontrolled blood sugar can also cause damage to blood vessels, impacting the health of the heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes. 2. IMMUNE SYSTEM SUPPRESSION Sugar suppresses the immune system through decreasing activity in immune system cells that attack bacteria. 3. MINERAL BALANCE Sugar inhibits mineral absorption, depriving the body of key minerals necessary for health, and depletes the

body of magnesium, which is required for proper functioning of every single cell in the human body and essential for calcium absorption and utilisation. 4. BRAIN HEALTH AND MOOD If you’ve read David Perlmutter’s incisive critique of carbohydrates and sugar on brain health, Grain Brain, you already know that sugar has powerful effects on mood and long-term brain health. Since B vitamins are required to metabolise sugar and carbohydrates, sugar consumption can lead to deficiencies in B vitamins. 5. SKIN HEALTH Sugar binds to proteins and fats in the body during digestion to create ‘advanced glycosylation end products’ or AGES, which are free radicals that reduce collagen and elastin in the skin, ultimately causing wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.

What do Fatigue, Insomnia, Hormone Imbalance, Weight issues and Anxiety all have in common? • Fatigue or Insomnia • Depression/Anxiety • Chemical or Food Sensitivities

• Weight Gain or Loss • Bloating, Digestive Pain or Constipation • Hormonal Imbalance or Cancers

Recently a 39 year old female patient attended the centre presenting with 8 years of depression, panic attacks, chronic fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, hypoglycaemic symptoms including nausea, shaking, regularly feeling weakness and faint. All previous medical testing showed normal blood sugar levels, and no diagnosis of hypoglycaemia. After running extensive profiling on cellular function, high levels of styrene toxicity was found with a symptom description range of dizziness, light-headedness, headache, drowsiness, nausea, impaired balance, fatigue, depression and anxiety. Treatment for detoxification began, followed with symptom relief within 4 months of the diagnosis.

Conditions affected by nerve toxins may become chronic and debilitating Being exposed to toxic substances is inevitable, though your liver is designed to be able to deal with a certain amount, however, when you are overexposed, as a large proportion of the population are now, this can create havoc with your health and mental wellbeing. Toxic substances from the environment or in your diet can impact your mood and energy almost immediately, creating a reaction for up to 24 hours, causing you chemical sensitivities to smells or contact. They may also build up causing years of ill health, depression, anxiety, and chronic disease. The liver comes into play when you consume anything of a toxic nature to your system, and can be very different for every individual. During this time, enzymes and nutrients required by the liver for detoxification are used in excessive levels in this system, disrupting sleep, mood, digestion, and energy, where these enzymes are also necessary. Your liver is designed to process these toxins and have them excreted from your body, however, problems develop when the toxic load becomes too much, and disease processes begin. Conditions affecting your nervous system, such as mental health disorders, severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks, hormonal imbalances and disorders, not to mention many forms of cancer could be caused due to these overloads. Call for a free half hour consultation with one of our naturopaths, if you feel you may have health issues associated with toxicity. Learn about everything that may be specifically affecting you, and what you can do about it.

PIZZA BOT DELIVERS DIRECT TO YOUR DOOR Domino’s Pizza has rolled into the market of self-driving vehicles by unveiling a prototype four-wheeled delivery robot. Designed by Aussie start-up Marathon Robotics, the Domino’s Robotic Unit delivers from the store to the customer’s door, keeping food hot. Domino’s Group CEO Don Meij said in a statement he hoped they would be able to work with the government and that their robot would be able to inform future regulation of automated delivery services and self-driving vehicles in Australia. “With autonomous vehicles opening up possibilities for saving lives, saving time and moving goods more efficiently, we look forward to continuing our work in this field and leading the commercial trials.” AAP

BENTO LAB

STOCARD These days there is a rewards program for everything from flying to shopping. It can be frustrating sorting through the ever growing collection of rewards cards while standing at the store counter. If, like us, you enjoy the programs but are tired of the extra cards in your wallet, check out the Stocard app. It will collate all of your rewards cards on one easy-to-access app. There are 200 pre-set loyalty cards or you can quickly scan your own cards to add them to the program. It’s free and available on IOS.

Ever fancied yourself as a scientist? Well, with this gadget you will be one step closer. The Bento Lab is a DNA analysis lab that you can take anywhere. Users can take a biological sample and extract its DNA to conduct genetic analysis. It can also make eating a meal more interesting, with inventors saying users can test a hamburger pattie to see if it contains cow or horse meat. It will also enable users to identify genetically modified organisms in food. About half of the required funding has been raised through crowdfunding.

LATEST PODCASTS

Real Crime Profile is currently sitting in the top 10 on Australia’s podcast iTunes chart and with topical subjects spanning from Stephen Avery to OJ Simpson, it’s easy to see why. The podcast is hosted by former FBI profiler Jim Clemente, the founder and director of Paladin, National Stalking Advocacy Service Laura Richards and Lisa Zambetti, the casting director for CBS’ hit television series Criminal Minds. The three profile the behaviour behind criminal cases. So far there has been a breakdown of Netflix documentary Making a Murderer and now the trio are looking into The People vs OJ Simpson. ith the federal budget fast approaching it is a good idea to look at all strategy options that are currently available to you. At this time of year there is a lot of speculation around what may change and how it may affect your personal situation. One such strategy that may come under scrutiny is the transition to retirement pension. A number of industry and political commentators have suggested that this strategy is low hanging fruit that can easily be removed without too much political recourse. The transition to retirement strategy has proven beneficial to a number of individuals over preservation age (now 56 years of age). A transition to retirement pension enables you to access your superannuation benefits without having to retire from the workforce. This strategy gives you greater flexibility leading up to your retirement. Starting a transition to retirement pension means that you will be required to draw a minimum pension of four per cent of the capital invested in the pension during the financial year. Importantly, you are unable to withdraw more than the 10 per cent of the account balance until you retire or turn 65. For those over age 60, these pension payments are not subject to tax. The key benefit of the strategy is that the income and capital gains generated from the assets backing the transition to retirement pension become highly tax efficient. A well-structured transition to retirement strategy generally involves making tax effective concessional

The transition to retirement strategy is food for thought contributions (up to $35,000 for those over preservation age) while drawing a pension to replace forgone income contributed to super. Alternatively, a transition to retirement pension can be used to fund a shortfall in salary as you reduce your work commitment in the lead-up to retirement. The key downside to the strategy is that you are accessing your superannuation benefits early, which means they may not last as long. Importantly, this strategy is not for everyone and should be considered on a case by case basis. Given that the budget will be handed down on May 3 this year – a week earlier than usual – it is important that those aged between 56 and 65, who are still working, review this strategy with their financial adviser as soon as possible. hey say a week is a long time in politics. But it’s not a particularly long time when you’re trying to learn all about a motor car. So it’s nice, every so often, when we’re offered the chance to sample a test machine over an extended period – getting a better chance to learn its

strengths and weaknesses, rather than the usual one-week ‘speed-dating’ stint. Having a car in your driveway for a month is much more representative of its real-life qualities – good and bad. The things that might seem fun at first, can become annoying over time. Likewise the things that jar at first glance, but become

less irritating once you’ve become more familiar with a vehicle. We recently got to know Citroen’s slightly awkward but unquestionably practical Grand C4 Picasso over an extended month-long test that revealed plenty of good – and surprisingly little bad – about this French people mover.

The Grand Picasso isn’t the kind of car that will win you over from the outset. It doesn’t strike you as being particularly plush, and even by modern people-mover standards it’s a long way from being pretty. It’s definitely more of an acquired taste. But it’s made its mark on the Australian market, winning Drive’s top people mover award a year or so back. Citroen recently sweetened the pot by whacking in about $5000 worth of extra equipment – most of it electronic safety and convenience aides – without lifting the Grand Picasso’s $43,990 pricetag. For a car boasting an infinitely variable seven-seat configuration, surprising interior space, a frugal turbo-diesel engine and plenty of standard kit, that makes it an inviting family conveyance. And, week by week and bit by bit, it won us over too. People who smirked at its rather boxy shape were eventually won over by the surprising amount of interior space for a car that, despite its seven-seat capacity, is still based upon the running gear of a mid-sized hatchback. The Grand Picasso, you see, is one of three distinctly different machines to wear Citroen’s C4 badge. There’s the sensible and practical C4 continued over>

MOTORING

<from previous page hatchback that impressed us with its levels of equipment and civilised driving manner (and its recently-introduced three-cylinder engine). Then there’s the C4 Picasso (not Grand) – combining some funky styling and a stunningly flexible cabin and a turbocharged, 1.6-litre petrol engine. The Grand Picasso is a slightly stretched version of that machine – although it lacks some of the quirks of the five-seat Picasso, like the aircraft-style lay-flat front seats. But it wins the space war by improving upon its sibling’s space and practicality with the very flexible seven-seat configuration. Over the course of our extended test we sampled several different scenarios – moving large groups of people and also moving large loads of cargo. Having not one, but two of our grown sons moving out of home over the course of a few days gave one opportunity for the Picasso to show its true colours. About 30 seconds was all it took to transform this seven-seater into a more-than-adequate load-lugger. With the third-row seats already folded down into the floor, a fuss-free operation sees the middle-row pews quickly folded completely flat into the floor – liberating a

massive, mini-van-like cargo space behind the two front seats. A couple of minutes and minimum of fuss later transformed the Grand Picasso back into a vehicle capable of accommodating seven people. Its easy driveability, sturdy handling and light, glassy cockpit appealed. Like previous models, it features a ‘Zenith’ panoramic windscreen that stretches back over the heads of the front-seat passengers. Complemented by a panoramic sunroof, it makes the Picasso feel like a giant display case. Yet the glass is treated with a special finish that prevents it absorbing too much of the summer heat. The Citroen’s diesel engine that at first blush sounded a little harsh and

clattery earned our affection for its smooth, sturdy flow of power and the seamless way it mated with the Picasso’s automatic transmission. The cruise control and speed limiter functions can be programed to contain pre-set speeds. So you can choose to cruise at, say, 100km/h on the freeway but quickly scroll down to 80km/h if the speed limit decreases. Likewise the speed limiter – which can be set at 60km/h around town but instantly lifted to 100 on the open road. With the complementary Tech Pack included, the Picasso adds features like adaptive cruise control with a collision avoidance alert, lane departure warning, Xenon headlights with ‘smart beam’ auto-dimming; blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree parking assistant. All of it’s sensible, well thought-out, useful stuff. Except for one thing – the sporty-style gearshift paddles mounted on the steering column. They’re usually a sign that a car is intended – or at least pretends – to be sporty and fun to drive. That’s something the Picasso will never be – no matter how long you drive it.

CITROEN GRAND C4 PICASSO HOW BIG? Its exterior dimensions are relatively modest, as it’s based upon the same running gear as the company’s mid-sized C4 hatchback. Yet inside, with seats that can slide forward and back or fold completely flat, it’s amazingly roomy and practical. HOW FAST? The two-litre turbo-diesel has plenty of low-down grunt and shifts the car along nicely. But it’s hardly a sports car, so probably doesn’t need the gearshift paddles. HOW THIRSTY? Again, that frugal turbo-diesel comes to the fore with a driving range of almost 1000km on a tank of fuel. HOW MUCH? Its $43,990 pricetag looks like even better value since Citroen added a raft of technical features at no extra cost.

My Weekly Preview takes a look at the latest news on the Coast’s property market…

8100sqm site at Buddina will be redeveloped to make way for a new $20 million retail centre. The new shopping village – to be known as The Point – received the green light from Sunshine Coast Council last month and will be constructed on the corner of Nicklin Way and Point Cartwright Drive, directly opposite Kawana Shoppingworld. Construction and development company Pellicano purchased the land in 2008 and work is earmarked to start mid-year. Pellicano Queensland development manager Michael Kent says the existing buildings will be demolished to make way for the new centre, which will

include 2500-square metres of floor space with a potential for 15 tenancies. “The site is prominently positioned on two major arterial roads that connect Maroochydore, Mooloolaba and Coolum, and The Point will become a destination and convenience shopping location,’’ he says. “Anchored by a small format supermarket, a limited number of tenancies are available ranging from 58 to 600-square metres, some with alfresco seating areas which would be perfectly suited to a greengrocer, butcher, deli or provedore, restaurant or boutique service provider. The design is comparable to popular shopping precincts like James Street.’’

T

he $5 billion Caloundra South development is well underway with plans and pricing for the first suburb released by Stockland. The first land release has lots ranging in size from 250-square metres to 576-square metres and will be priced from $192,800 to $275,400 when the sites are released to the public on April 23. The new suburb will be located on the

northern border of Caloundra South, or Aura as it is being marketed, surrounded by conservation areas and parklands. Covering just 8 per cent of Aura’s 24 hectare site, Stockland will sell lots in successive stages with the suburb to be completed in the next five years. It will eventually comprise 1560 home sites which is comparable to Stockland’s Brightwater suburb at Mountain Creek.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Wow, what a weekend of waves… I so did not see that coming! I would think the Pa Bendall had the best waves in years for the contest. The conditions were postcard perfect. Bells Beach got underway and as I pen this column some big upsets had taken place. Medina, De Souza, Parkinson, Slater all out! Julian and Mick still in so let’s hope Julian goes all the way, although Fanning is on fire! On Sunday there is a jump in swell so hopefully some fun waves. Wherever you are surfing enjoy and be kind to the tourist surfer – all helps the economy! As Neil Young says ‘Keep rocking in the free world.’

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality bream are being caught from the Maroochy bar area and upstream to Chambers Island using cut baits such as mullet fillet. When the tide is high, trevally at the Maroochy canal entrance is best, use poppers and live baits. SURF: You can get tailor in the deeper gutters from Mudjimba to North Shore Maroochy using half a pilly or baby blue pillies, but they only run for an hour just after dark. Jew and shark are being caught on big baits at Pincushion. OFFSHORE: Water temp 26 degrees. Plenty of action around Murphy’s Reef and the Gneerings with cobia at the Blinker. Mackerel are still around in numbers, but bait schools have to be found first in order to locate them. The Barwon Banks is firing for snapper and pearlies. FRESHWATER: Fishing is allowed at Lake Borumba but it’s still having problems with blue-green algae, so check the latest ruling before venturing out to Imbil. The upper reaches of the Maroochy River are producing quality bass. Somerset Dam is worth a visit with good reports of bass on jigged lures and golden perch on baits.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Venus vamps into your sign. There’s a new moon in Aries on Thursday, which is the best day of the year to initiate bold new projects. Your motto is from Maya Angelou: “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.”

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Venus, your ruling planet, powers into Aries, which will give you a welcome boost to energy and concentration, and help you focus on serious work. Your motto is from fellow Taurean Katharine Hepburn “My greatest strength is my common sense.”

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] This week Mercury your ruling planet moves into Taurus, which will steady your mercurial mind and help you get things done. Power through all those mundane tasks you’ve been putting off, like paying bills, making appointments and tackling household chores.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] You’re on an emotional rollercoaster this week crabs, as you cope with shifting scenarios and oscillating moods. Thursday’s new moon shakes up your career so get ready for a few surprises over the coming month. Creative networking has much to offer.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Prepare for a serious week, when you can get an incredible amount done. Tuesday’s sun/ Saturn trine is terrific for powering through creative projects. Self-control and patience are required, so you can capitalise on the positive and productive star patterns.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] This week Mercury activates your adventure zone. It’s the perfect time to study, travel, explore and experiment as you gain inspiration from international friends and foreign cultures. Look for a lover who is kind, creative and compassionate.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Enthusiasm is high but don’t jump to hasty, half-baked conclusions, and then pass on incorrect information. Serious Saturn cautions you to think before you speak and consult before you act. Cast your net wide, and search for someone who’s not your usual type.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] If you come on too strong with a friend or family member then you’ll just drive them away. Focus on the things you have in common, as you improve the relationship via shared interests. Power plays are likely as Pluto amps up your control tendencies.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Saturn is sauntering through your sign, which isn’t easy. You’ll find hurdles are placed in your path, which will help you grow and mature – like a fine red wine. As birthday great Bette Davis said “The key to life is accepting challenges.” You must make sure you learn from them.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Capricorns are workaholics and this week you’re in overdrive. You’re in the mood to work long and hard and to power through projects to get an enormous amount done. You have the power to influence those around you, make sure you do so in helpful and happy ways.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] This week sees Aquarians ricocheting off in diverse new directions. Which is exactly how it should be. Don’t worry about making messy mistakes along the way. Be inspired by Aquarian Jack Lemmon “Failure won’t hurt you, but fear of failure will cripple you.”

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Saturn pushes you to be the very best you can be at work. If you’re looking for employment, don’t sell yourself short. Learn to sing your professional praises. When it comes to your peer group, be discriminating. Don’t waste time with fickle friends who sabotage your dreams.

THE LAST WORD

SHADY CHARACTERS Richard O’Leary asks – will the real Malcolm Turnbull please stand up?

I

dentity crisis is the theme of the song Slim Shady by American rapper Eminem – in the music clip it shows the singer in a room of lookalikes and he asks the question: “So won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up, please stand up, please stand up?” It could well serve as the theme song for the first week of the election campaign by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull after his decision to go to the polls on July 2 if the Senate doesn’t pass his bill to resurrect the Australian Building and Construction Commission. It seems many people are calling on the real Malcolm Turnbull to stand up. It followed the response by his predecessor Tony Abbott to a question about whether or not he could campaign for the man who disposed him. “It’s very easy for me to campaign for the election of the Turnbull government because the Turnbull government is running on the Abbott

government’s record and it’s a very strong record.” Turnbull resorted to a three-word slogan to defend his six months in office. “Continuity and change,” he said, “continuity and change.” But there appears to be much more continuity than change under Turnbull. Research released by the parliamentary library revealed 80 per cent of the bills introduced by the Turnbull government have been based on Abbott government decisions. It was always going to be tough for Turnbull to be himself considering the deals he had to do with the Right of the Liberal Party to get the numbers to topple Abbott, coupled with the fact he represented different things to different people. To the LGBTI community he stood for same-sex marriage, to

environmentalists he was a breath of fresh air in the climate change debate, and for businesses he was about tax reform. The letdown hasn’t quite been Obama-esque – he is after all still 39 points ahead as the preferred Prime Minister – although the two-party preferred numbers are much closer. One thing he does have in his favour is his opponent, Labor’s Bill Shorten, isn’t adverse to the odd identity crisis of his own. I will never forget that story about him ditching the Sydney Swans for Collingwood because there was a few votes in it – so the story goes. Let’s hope the real Bill Shorten and Malcolm Turnbull stand up in the next few months – maybe then they will hit the right note with voters.
