OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

hirty-six years ago a 16-yearold called Grant Kenny went from nobody to national icon when he won the junior and senior men’s titles at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships. That was the last time The Aussies, as they are affectionately known, were held on the Sunshine Coast, but they’re about to return. Kenny is also back, and this time he will compete against his son. Our cover story preview’s the 101st staging of the championships. Also this week you get to have a quick chat with inspirational local woman Shelley Devine, travel to Colombia for a bit of R and R, and test drive the new Mercedes-Benz, which has rewritten the rules on hatchbacks. As always, our opinion makers give you something to think about, our stylists give you the inside running on what to wear, and don’t miss Todd’s Grog in My Time – towards the end he even talks about the beer he’s reviewing. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

LEAP OF FAITH

Shelley Devine from Coolum is one a group of women entrepreneurs taking their ideas to the next level with the help of a new business incubator. FIRST JOB?

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

I worked in a café.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I was quite unwell for some time and ended up in hospital – nothing was going right and my body refused to respond the way it was supposed to after surgery. There was about four weeks where my body just refused to work and with what was unfolding it looked like I wouldn’t be able to return to my job as a flight attendant. I guess this was the turning point that forced me to leave and jump into the unknown. As soon as I did that, my body decided to function normally again.

I’m a member of the incubator program at Spark Bureau, which supports founders of established businesses (or startups) to take their brand to a national or global audience. I’m currently working on developing Devine Bodies Pressed Juice as a whole wellness brand, encompassing a variety of products that educate and support us holistically. It’s been such a great opportunity to work and learn with all these amazing entrepreneurs, mostly women.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES?

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

I have two beautiful teenagers, Oliver and Ruby, and two beautiful fur babies. Sunny the Labrador and Edward the Burmese tiger – oops, I meant cat. He thinks he’s a tiger!

FIRST CAR? An old gold Pajero.

FAVOURITE BOOK? I remember the first time I read Louise Hay, Heal you Life – so many years ago now but it was probably a major contributing factor to the path I’ve followed.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Enchanted Love, Marianne Williamson – haven’t started it yet. I focus too much on business so I thought it was time to focus on love. I need some balance in my life.

FAVOURITE SONG?

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? So many, but if I had to pick one it would be Peregian. The beach, cafes and vibe feels like a holiday every day.

I love Simply Red – just saw them in Sydney, so I guess it would be Angel.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

We always go to lunch at Ricky’s at Noosa and a walk through the Noosa National Park.

Leave your secure job of 15 years – you’ve got this. Create your dreams. Simple! From my friend and naturopath, Stacey.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

We could be a little more dog friendly.

I moved here from Sydney with my family 13 years ago.

I guess the birth of my human babies.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

I love watching my children take their first steps into the big wide world confidently and with a tremendous amount of passion. Oliver has just moved to Brisbane and started uni life and Ruby is in year 11. They’re both incredibly driven and have a lot of ambition and zest for life that I don’t often see in teenagers. Yes, proud mama.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU MOST? I’m impatient – things moving too slowly for me. I remind myself daily to go with the flow. Breathe.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH FRUSTRATIONS? I wait until the feeling passes. Then I act – sometimes this can take a few days but I never make changes or major decisions in this state.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Dream big. Trust. Have faith in your ability to manifest.

WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE? I’m a coffee snob. Only one allowed each day and I love lattes.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

NRL OR AFL?

Not eating ice-cream last night.

Happiest on the beach with my kids and dog.

Sorry, not a footy girl. Namaste.

LEGENDS OF THE SURF

Around 22,000 people will hit our beaches this month for The Aussies, back on the Coast for the first time in 36 years. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

ett Kenny is a chip off the old block. Not only does he have a strong resemblance to his famous dad, but he is following in his footsteps. Thirty-six years after Grant Kenny made history at the iconic surf lifesaving event The Aussies, Jett is keen to also tackle the championships here at home. He is set to join the 7000 athletes, representing 313 clubs, who will compete in 380 events across nine days of action packed sport. What’s more, he will be facing off against his own dad, 52-year-old Grant. Around 22,000 people will inundate the Coast’s beaches next weekend to witness surf lifesaving history in the making. This year marks the 101st anniversary since the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships were launched at Bondi Beach. It has been 36 years since the championships – affectionately known as The Aussies – were held here on the Sunshine Coast. The last time the iconic titles were celebrated at our beaches, a young Grant Kenny made history by winning both the junior and senior titles, going on to become a national legend.

“It’s not a career you make money from. You do it because you love it.’’ And love it, he does. The passion Kenny has for the surf, and his home club Alexandra Headland, is evident in his voice. It’s no surprise given his background. Kenny may have been born in Maryborough but the Coast runs through his veins. His family moved to the region when he was six months old, settling across the road from the beach at Alex. “Walking across the road is about as far as I’d ever had to go to get to the beach until I was 20,’’ he says. Quizzed on his love for the ocean, Kenny laughs. “I’m not sure I had a choice with Dad being who he is and what he did. It was inevitable that’s what I would do. “Not that I was forced into it in anyway. The ocean is such a difficult thing not to love. Putting those things together… we lived at the beach, Dad was the first Ironman champion and I grew to love the ocean as well. “It probably would have been strange if I had not ended up loving the ocean.’’ As you may be able to tell, there is no myweeklypreview.com.au

Grant Kenny and his father Hayden Kenny, Australia’s first Ironman champion keeping the Ironman luminary away from the ocean and he is looking forward to competing in the masters and a few open and ski events next weekend. “Yes, I’m competing against Jett… not that I’d call it a contest,’’ he laughs. “He’s 21. Not long after the gun goes, he will be a little dot in the distance. “You know what, he is extraordinarily talented.’’ The pair are proud members of the Alex Surf Club, which is co-hosting the event with Maroochydore and Mooloolaba. Competition will kick off with a two-day youth championship on April 16 and 17. This will be followed by the Masters division on April 18 and 19 and the Open championships will be held across five days from April 20 to 24. The festival is expected to boost the Coast’s economy and Sunshine Coast Council has thrown its support behind the championships. Mayor Mark Jamieson is welcoming competitors, officials and volunteers for the world’s biggest surf sports event. “Our clubs date back 100 years – and we’re delighted to have the national championships back on our beaches for the first time since the great days of the early 1980s,” Jamieson says. “The competitors are sure to enjoy racing at Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba, which are

not only beautiful beaches, but also home to three of our country’s premier surf lifesaving clubs, with a strong history of success and participation in The Aussies.” One man who looks back at the history fondly is Surf Life Saving Queensland president and Maroochy Surf Club life member Ralph Devlin. “I was the carnival organiser at the ripe old age of 25… in the days when the actual club hosted the titles,’’ he says. “It’s bringing back some great memories for our members, because we staged what was regarded as one of the greatest days. Grant Kenny won the double, it was just perfect.’’ Devlin has no doubt that the Coast will shine as the event host.

“In round terms there will be around 7000 (competitors) and 15,000 supporters, family, friends. “That’s going to put the Sunshine Coast at maximum stretch but we have a great tradition in hosting events like this. I’d be saying it’s going to be a resounding success. “The arrangements for the last 25 years really favoured the Gold Coast due to contractual arrangements and so on… it’s good for the sport to bring it back to the Coast.’’ Surf Life Saving Australia president Graham Ford says the organisation is thrilled to bring the titles back to the region. “2016 marks the 101st year since the first Australian Surf Life Saving Championships were held on Bondi Beach. There has been so much history in that time but the one that people continue to talk about is that 1980 edition. “We are delighted to be on the verge of writing a new, highly memorable chapter in the history of this great event here on the Sunshine Coast.” “It should be noted that every competitor at The Aussies 2016 is a volunteer patrolling member at a surf lifesaving club, giving a minimum of 25 hours of their time to keep Australia’s beaches safe. The Aussies are a celebration and showcase of those skills.”

The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships have a long history, dating back to 1915

PREVIEW RIP RENATA

Maroochydore resident and mother of two Renata Dickie has lost her battle with cancer. Renata, who was originally diagnosed with breast cancer and more recently fought secondary cancer, was to be the recipient of this year’s Pretty in Pink Bra Walkathon fundraiser. Money raised will now be donated to her husband Steve and children, Daniel, six, and Liam, two. Event organiser Melinda Bingley says the walk will be held at Moffat Beach on April 17 and will offer vital support to the Dickie family. She hopes to raise around $18,000 and already 200 people have registered to participate in the 10-kilometre and five-kilometre events. “(Renata) was brave and held on strong, but she became an angel above,’’ Melinda says. “I am grateful I got to meet her and this is even a bigger reminder why I do this walkathon: to make a difference in our community, share awareness, and to come together. With lots of love and positive energy, walking together we can show everyone touched by cancer that they are not alone.” Registration is $45 for adults and $20 for children and can be done through eventbrite.com.au.

REVIEW

PRESERVING OUR PAST Council last week called for nominations from community members who have a commitment to cultural heritage to join the Sunshine Coast Cultural Heritage Reference Group. The council’s Community Services director Coralie Nichols said the group provided strategic advice on preserving and accessing cultural heritage in the region. There are four positions available and interested people with experience in the heritage sector, business, tourism, creative industries or marketing are encouraged to nominate by emailing culturalheritage@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

JAMES ACKERMAN MEMORIAL OPENS Sunshine Coast footballer James Ackerman, who last year died from injuries sustained during a match, has been further honoured with a memorial garden opened by his family last week. The garden, located inside the main entrance to Sunshine Coast Stadium, features a plaque and a large rock with handprints from James’ wife Saraa and their two children, Ollie and Milly. It is a permanent reminder of Ackerman who played in the Intrust Super Cup, as well as having a stint with the Brisbane Broncos’ under-20s program.

$22 MILLION

The Queensland Government has committed $22 million to upgrade four roundabouts on Kawana Way to increase capacity ahead of the opening of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Roundabouts at the intersections of Kawana Way and Metier Linkway, Premier Circuit, Kawana Island Boulevard and Jamaica Way will be upgraded to include two through lanes for Kawana Way under the new State Infrastructure Plan released this month. Main Roads and Safety Minister Mark Bailey said the upgrades would improve capacity for traffic accessing the hospital precinct.

THUMBS UP FOR NEW BOAT RAMP Boaties have welcomed news from Sunshine Coast Council that work is starting on a new two-lane boat ramp at Noroor Road, Mudjimba granting additional access to Maroochy River. The upgrade includes the ramp, floating walkway, bitumen car park with 54 spaces and connecting pathways. The area will be closed during construction, from mid-April until completion in late September.

GREAT ROLE MODEL

Model Tayla Spier will be this year’s Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival ambassador. Spier, who was discovered at the festival and subsequently signed by Vivien’s Models, will feature in the festival’s marketing material and act as a mentor for up and coming models walking in the festival. The ninth annual event is set to be held in Caloundra during October. Already a number of high profile designers have signed on to show, including Nicola Finetti, Opera and Sunflair.

Beyonce’s newest move Singing superstar Beyonce Knowles-Carter has taken her first steps into the fitness industry with the release of an activewear line. Titled Ivy Park – the name of the park where she used to go running with her father – the sportswear collection will be released on April 14. Practicality and fashion merge in the range that took 18 months to develop and will target both street fashion and high end. Ivy Park is expected to be available in 50 countries via outlets that include Topshop, Net-a-Porter and Selfridges. The singer explains the line’s inspiration came from finding a gap in the market when it came to fashionable activewear: “When I’m working and rehearsing I live in my workout clothes but I didn’t feel there was an athletic brand that spoke to me. My goal is to push the boundaries of athletic wear and support and inspire women who understand that beauty is more than your physical appearance.”

MY LIFE

IS THE SUGAR IN FRUIT AS BAD FOR YOU AS REGULAR SUGAR? Not if it’s whole fruit. The natural sugar in fruit is accompanied by fibre, which helps your body assimilate the sugar more slowly, causing a more manageable increase in blood sugar. Not so with fruit juice. It does contain fibre, however the fibre is broken down in the juicing process. To minimise spikes in insulin, whole fruit is best because the sugars it contains are effectively hidden within the fibre scaffolding of the cells and it takes time for the digestive tract to break down those cells. If you’re worried about your blood sugar levels, avoid dried fruit, which contains more sugar, and opt for low GI fruits like berries, citrus fruits, apples, peaches and pears. When you eat too many foods that cause a spike in blood sugar – cane sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, refined grain products, soft drinks – your pancreas works overtime producing insulin, which tells your cells to absorb the extra glucose to be stored in the liver and muscles for later use. This can lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

5 WAYS TO BE SPIRITUALLY HEALTHY 1. Practice a form of exercise that connects your mind, body and spirit, such as yoga, tai chi or qigong. 2. Have an attitude of gratitude. Start and end the day by reciting three things you are grateful for. 3. Practice mindfulness. Whether you meditate for 20 minutes a day, or just bring your awareness to your breathing when you walk, being mindful helps you feel calm and centred.

4. Live your dreams. Life’s short, so do something every day to make your dreams a reality. Step outside your comfort zone and take a risk – you’ll be surprised what doors open when you commit yourself. 5. Spend time in nature. Take your shoes off, walk on the sand or on the grass, swim, walk in the forest or sit by a waterfall and give yourself some time to press the reset button.

ARE YOU A PERFECTIONIST? Perfectionism can help you achieve great things, but it can also wear you down if you’re not careful, writes Jodi Chapman.

H

igh expectations may leave you feeling a void in the pit of your stomach. Perfectionism or being a high achiever can be brilliant for moving forward in life achieving your goals, but if you’re not careful, they could work against you. Feelings of failure can be overwhelming, leading to sadness, anger and anxiety. When you are so focused on perfecting the missing piece, you’re not really aware of where the emotions are coming from. We are bombarded in so many ways in which we learn to try harder and to be better. There’s the self-imposed desire to impress in order to gain the loving attention of a parent in childhood. Or it can be imposed by others, such as a partner or family member who may have high expectations of you that may be impossible to reach, not to mention the

media’s expectations of how we should look, how much money we should make to be successful, how to have the perfect family and to be a perfect parent. In some cases, a genetic disorder known as the MTHFR gene mutation actually results in symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessions, and perfectionism, which is actually quite common and easily treated, though not often diagnosed. Identifying where your emotions are coming from, and knowing life is a journey that is best lived your way, may help ease the pressure of your own thoughts. Regaining balance in life by taking the pressure off could be the simplest thing you do. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

TRAVEL

Underground Salt Cathedral Zipaquira

A view of the centre of Bogota with the Andes in the background

COLOMBIA’S COOL FACTOR Bogota has shaken off its dangerous image and is now one of South America’s must-see destinations. By Sarah Marshall

T

here’s a 10 per cent chance of sunshine in Colombia’s Chingaza National Park. So when rays briefly break through a heavy veil of cloud shrouding high-altitude bogs and grassland, I bask like the succulent plants around me, spiralling their leaves longingly skyward. Damp weather is usually welcome in the 76,600 hectare, butterfly-shaped park, located in the Orinoco River basin and home to jaguars, spectacled bears and more than 200 recorded bird species. The Chuza dam provides Bogota with much of its drinking water, making Chingaza a beating heart for Colombia’s thriving capital. Escaping the busy city for a day, I’ve come to hike along one of the many trails in a park that’s managed by the government but cared for by farming families who live on its fringes. Smudges of endemic frailejones define the landscape, like dots on a pointillist painting, their thick, waterlogged trunks supporting a crown

of furry leaves. The other-planetary ecosystem is surprisingly only a three-hour drive from Bogota – almost the same journey time required to travel from one end of the traffic-clogged city to the other. Once considered to be one of the most dangerous urban destinations in the world, this thin, meandering, mountain-backed metropolis has drastically changed its image in the last 20 years. Now tourists can comfortably visit museums housing ancient treasures, wander through streets of crumbling colonial architecture, or dip into a fashionable nightlife scene. Bars, restaurants and designer shopping centres located in the trendy Zona Rosa and Zona G districts could easily belong in Madrid, London or New York. Most historic sites can be found downtown in La Candelaria. In Plaza Bolivar, dominated by a statue of Simon Bolivar, architect of Colombia’s independence from Spanish rule, I shudder at the number of political executions that have taken place here.

Some of the most scenic 16th century buildings are close to the Palace of San Carlos on Calle 10, not far from the excellent Gold Museum, one of the finest collections of pre-Colombian artefacts in South America. I drive north of the city for two hours to the green-hued crater-lake in the forest reserve of Cacique Guatavita. The indigenous Muisca people, whose presence in Colombia dates back to 5500 BC, used the sacred spot to celebrate the election of new chiefs. After being bathed in honey and gold dust, the Zipa would be launched on a raft into the lake and showered with jewellery and trinkets by worshippers. As a bird skims across the water’s surface, I marvel at how many priceless finds might be lurking below. In 1545, Spanish conquistadors attempted to drain the lake in their search for the mythical ‘city of gold’ although they never quite reached the bottom. Beyond sparkling museum display cabinets and fancy architectural facades, there’s clearly still much more to discover in and around Bogota.

WHERE TO STAY Hotel B3 Virrey – Concealed behind a living wall of plants, this 128-room eco-friendly design hotel is located close to Bogota’s trendy Zona Rosa neighbourhood.

WHAT TO DO Zipaquira Salt Cathedral – This extraordinary church has been carved from salt in mines 200m below a mountain in the town of Zipaquira, 47km from Bogota. Miners built their first sanctuary here in 1932, although the government commissioned the current ambitious structure in the 1990s. Botero Museum – Famous for his voluptuous subjects, artist Fernando Botero hails from Colombian city Medellin. Exhibited in this colonial house is a collection of his sculptures and paintings which were donated to the Bank of the Republic in 2000. *The writer travelled as a guest of HighLives Travel

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

EXCHANGE-TRADED BONDS 101 Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

H

istorically, corporate bonds have been primarily for wholesale investors, as the minimum transaction size was $500,000. Last year however there was an important development for retail investors with the Australian Corporate Bond Company launching exchange-traded bonds (XTBs). These new bonds enable investors access to this asset class with an initial investment as small as $500. XTBs offer direct, individual exposure to senior corporate bonds on the ASX, and offer a risk-return profile between term deposits and subordinated bonds/ hybrid securities. Unlike hybrid securities, XTBs cannot be converted into equity, or extended past the maturity date. Both fixed and floating

rate XTBs are available. Fixed rate XTBs pay coupons half yearly, which are set at the date of issue and this coupon will not change during the life of the bond, enabling investors to model their cashflows. The fixed rate bonds tend to trade at either discounts or premiums to their initial face value, depending on the initial coupon relative to current rates on offer. Most currently trade at a premium given the downward shift in market interest rates in the last few years. Floating rate XTBs pay coupons quarterly, and these are based on the three month bank bill rate plus an initial margin. The initial margin is set at the date of issue. All of the floating rate bonds are issued by financial companies with a credit rating of A or better. Due to their floating rate structure they tend to trade around face value. The Australian Corporate Bond Company get paid a fee of 0.4 per cent per year on the fixed rate bonds, and 0.2 per cent on the floating rate bonds. So what interest rate do these bonds

offer? Well, of course the interest rate will depend on many factors, including the strength of the issuer and also the term to maturity etc. When assessing the XTBs it is important to understand the difference between the running yield, and the yield to maturity. For example, assume that a bond with one year to maturity is trading at $104, and paying an annual coupon of $6. Its running yield would be 5.77 per cent ($6 divided by $104). However, its yield to maturity would be only 2 per cent (you pay $104 today to get $106 in

the next year). The fixed rate bonds currently have yields-to-maturity of between 2.7 per cent and 4.9 per cent, and running yields that vary between 3.6 per cent and 6.9 per cent. The floating rate bonds are less common and have ‘current’ yields of 3.1 per cent and 3.4 per cent. We believe that XTBs could be a useful addition to investment portfolios and may be seen as an enhancement particularly relative to term deposits. Like all investments though, there are risks and readers should seek the advice of a qualified financial adviser before investing. PROFILE

IN STEP WITH THE GREAT VAN GOGH

A dance production about the life of Vincent Van Gogh is taking the theatre world by storm and it all began here, with Nambour dancer and choreographer Melissa Lanham and a RADF grant from the Sunshine Coast Council. Words: Leigh Robshaw

W

hen Melissa Lanham stood before one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous paintings at the National Gallery in London, the Nambour dancer and choreographer was so moved she developed an instant fascination with the Dutch post-impressionist painter and his tumultuous life. She then poured her passion into a creative work of her own, a 60-minute dance theatre show called Vincent, which premiered at the Adelaide Fringe Festival in March to widespread acclaim. It’s a visually stunning and highly emotive depiction of Van Gogh’s life and in particular his close relationship with his brother, Theo. With a stunning original score and sumptuous set design, it took two years for Lanham to develop the concept but it was really 12 years in the making, the seed having been planted the day she saw that first Van Gogh in the flesh. “I was living in the UK and working for the British Arts Council for two years as a dance development artist and that’s where I saw Sunflowers in Trafalgar Square. There was just something about it. When you se his paintings in real life they’re so vibrant and energetic and full, there’s an energy about them. With this one, he leaves all the edges raw. You see the canvas and all the brush strokes are really thick with paint and they pull into the centre. It’s quite remarkable, I’ve never seen anything like it.” It was a world away from Lanham’s beginnings, growing up in Mackay, then moving to Sydney at 18 to study dance and work as a performer. She married and had two daughters, before moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1996. Her husband was from Nambour and she felt the

Coast would be a beautiful place to raise children and a good base from which she could travel abroad and pursue dance. After that memorable gallery visit in London, Lanham spent the next ten years pondering the work and researching Van Gogh’s life, but it was never the right time to develop a show. Then, in 2014, she received a $3200 RADF grant through Sunshine Coast Council. It was the kickstart she needed to get the project off the ground. “My dance work is not about the paintings but the relationship between Van Gogh and his brother,” she says. “They wrote 660 letters over a seven-year period. It’s that other side to his life, not just his paintings that we can track now. That’s due to Theo’s wife, who collated his paintings and his letters. He wrote over a thousand letters, he was very close to his father and his sister. You can track his life and how he was feeling through

Call for details on our next OPEN HOUSE Saturday 23rd April

his letters, and he was a very eloquent man. His letters are stunning, full of sketches and quotes. It’s his private life and his mental health as well that struck a chord and how his brother kept him going through all the turmoil he experienced; the sicker he got the more vibrant his paintings became. “They know he was bipolar but they didn’t call it that back then. He had delusions towards the end of his life. The only way he could stop these things marching towards him was to paint. Theo’s wife described him as his hands were always twitching and always moving. For me as a choreographer, I used that in this work.” Lanham brought the two male dancers who play Vincent and Theo to the Coast for the concept development, which was done at Lind Lane Theatre in Nambour. She recruited her daughter Chloe, also a dancer, who she says is

Get Inspired! Call us for a free copy of our Home Design Magazine and our 10 Tips for Energy (I¿FLHQW 'HVLJQ

perfect in the role of Vincent’s muse. Next she brought a set designer and lighting designer on board, recruited seamstresses from the Australian ballet to make the costumes, and worked on the production for a year and a half before a production manager joined the crew. When he approached the Van Gogh Foundation in Amsterdam, the response provided testament to the quality of the show and gratification for Lanham, who has poured her heart and soul into it. “We received a letter back saying that they were excited about it and wanted it to come to Amsterdam, France and Belgium. It will cost about $100,000 to take the work overseas. We’ve stayed in contact with them and they’re happy for us to go over. We’re hoping it’s late next year. It takes a lot to tour a work overseas; a lot of money and a lot of logistics. There’s a lot of applying for funding and you have to wait two or three months before you find out if you’ve got the money or not, unless you can bring on private sponsors.” Lanham has also received great interest from the east coast of the US and is hoping to take the production to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She’s now writing an extensive education package to take the work into Australian schools and is planning a national tour later in the year, with a possible stint on the Sunshine Coast, where it all began. “This is the pinnacle of my career because it’s something that’s all mine and done with my own company,” she says. “It was not contracted by anyone else. It’s my work and to see it completed, for me it truly gives me a huge sense of satisfaction. There’s always things I want to change and fix though – a work of art is never finished.”

BUILDING BRIDGES

DEMOCRATIC DEBACLE

When Sami Muirhead met Michelle Bridges she was hoping it would be the start of a beautiful friendship – but things didn’t go to plan.

Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball says our local elections set a good example for the incessantly feuding federal pollies to follow.

ometimes in life you meet a person who has a great impact on you. Last week I hosted a posh dinner where the guest star was fitness author and TV celebrity, Michelle Bridges. Yes, the female trainer from The Biggest Loser; who has Commando at her beck and call and a cute three-month-old son named Axel. Something stirred inside me when I heard Michelle was coming to town. I was excited about ditching my daggy clothing to frock up in my Camilla kaftan. There are a few differences between Michelle and me. I have wanted to write a book for 13 years; Michelle Bridges has actually written 13 books. Mish has a Commando at home. My toddlers go swimming at home, commando style. Mish has an exercise clothing range available at Big W. I often shop at Big W. Mish has a six-pack. I have a 12-pack. Mish is pretty much the master of drive, determination and tenacity. I am the master of procrastination and self-doubt. Michelle flew with her son and parked him in his pram just off stage as she held court centre stage. She has barely cut the umbilical cord and here she is travelling the nation with this newborn by her side promoting a new book. Good on her I say. But the situation made me think how crazy we working women can be in the pursuit of trying to please everyone and trying to convince ourselves our lives will

not change once kids come along. I call it Superwoman Syndrome. Michelle looked amazing and did not place a high-heeled foot out of place, but I just felt a bit sorry for her. Every mum knows once you have a child, so many imbeciles think they have the right to give you advice on raising that little person. When our eldest child was born a photograph of her sucking a dummy sparked media interest all over the country. I was struggling as it was to breastfeed and to just get through the days and nights, so when our dummygate became one of the lead stories in the news, you could imagine my heartache and despair. So when I met Michelle, I just wanted to give her a hug and say let’s go get in our flannelette pyjamas and drink wine together. Or Milo. And when I finally did meet Michelle I was very uncool. I told her I gave up watching Better Homes and Gardens for her. Her eyes flickered to security. I then told her I wanted to take her son and snuggle him to my bosom. I did not mean it literally – it just came out. At this stage she started to look really panicked. I then told her I thought we could quite possibly be destined to be best friends. Michelle exited stage left with her agent and I never saw her again. I was standing there all alone in my kaftan to ponder where our friendship fell apart.

pparently some wag once said, ‘If voting made a difference, it would be banned’. A little cynical, perhaps. Nevertheless, that very thought popped into my head on Election Day as I lay on the couch wondering whether to get up and strike a blow for freedom. My preferred alternative was to remain as I was, prone and steadfastly exercising my right to pay the fine. I honestly don’t recall a more civilised campaign by better behaved candidates than at our recent council elections. It was a tea party with the Queen, not a foul word or bitter scowl to be seen anywhere. It represented the very essence of a civilised society. And the participation by our community in the whole process was equally commendable. We didn’t bat an eyelid and shuffled off to the booths barely raising an eyebrow. Juxtapose that with the travelling freak show that is the looming federal election. It takes little to imagine what we can expect – the likes of Bernardi and Abetz in their race to the bottom with Shorten and his crew. All of them engaged in meaningless debate about which of them is less unattractive to the electorate. It is the antithesis of inspiring. Where are the leaders? Could it be that some votes count

and other don’t? Does the value of the vote depend on the degree of our interest? Let’s face it, nothing could be more remote, on all levels, than Cantberra. So why get involved, why care? Is disinterest and lack of proximity causative of the kindergarten pantomime we put up with every three years? Those in our nation’s capital must struggle to be heard and to engage our interest, because on most levels they just don’t relate, are irrelevant to most of us and have no meaningful impact on our lives in any way that is different to their opposite clowns. Compare the federal shenanigans to our local councillors. We see them in our coffee shops and down the surf club; we can show up at their meetings in chambers if we like – that’s true accountability and real democracy. What they do is relevant and it affects our daily lives. Ergo, we care and we get involved. By virtue of that accountability and involvement, we have civilised campaigning and grown-up debate by people who are in touch. And that leads to civic leaders we can respect, instead of ridicule. Over the years I have paid, and avoided, many fines for not voting. Nonetheless, and despite my best effort, some manner of politician still seems to be elected regardless. It’s enough to make me think my vote didn’t count.

MY TIME

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe is coping with an overload of chocolate and children with a new mid-strength beer.

I

t’s been a crazy week with kids on school holidays and me and the missus back at work. Trying to successfully juggle both is like brushing your teeth with a mouthful of Tim Tams. Easter was a biggen this year and I selflessly decided to protect my family from developing type 2 diabetes by eating six times my own body weight in cheese and chocolate. My sister-inlaw, who’s a health and nutrition Nazi, told me I now need to lose eight kilos. Sure I’d go ahead and lose weight but I hate losing. I am a winner.

My daughter Isla asked recently if we can go to the baby adoption shop and pick up a new baby sister for her. Being the only girl with three big brothers, I get why she wants a little sister but I’m like, “Sweetheart, Mummy and Daddy have four kids already, if we go to that shop right now it won’t be to pick up, it’ll be to drop off”. Another little thing I’ve noticed these school hols is the kids’ addiction to gadgets. Pretty soon I think we’ll all be grounding our children by sending them outside to play. The latest game they’re into is Batman Vs Superman, a solid spin-off from the mega blockbuster movie. I’m not sure that’s much of a battle either. Batman Vs Superman. One’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, the other fights a penguin and a very persistent clown. You know what I’d like to see: Batman Vs Superman Vs Alien Vs Predator. I’d also like to see actress Jessica Biel name her next kid Batmo – Batmo Biel. Amid all the chaos there was some good news these holidays. Yesterday I

received a letter from some government department saying my speeding fine from January was outstanding. I’m not sure how they judge these things, but I took the compliment anyway. My boy Noah and I had a discussion about rules and I suggested that rules were made to be broken. Not my rules of course. Maybe Mum’s rules are slightly malleable, but not mine. He said he didn’t think anything in this world was made to be broken, but that’s simply not true. Take pinatas for example. Pinatas were specifically made to be broken. Glow sticks. They too were made to be broken. You buy them at a school disco or a music festival, you snap them and they glow. Add to the list plates in a Greek restaurant, clay pigeons and Kit Kats. And so it is with the good people at Copenhagen’s World famous Carlsberg brewery. They’ve broken the rules. What has always been a traditionally robust and untouchable much loved staple Denmark brew is now available in a mid-strength option and the results are actually pleasantly surprising.

Carlsberg has chosen our great country to be one of the first in the world to road test their new mid 3.5 per cent and it’s being brewed in SA under the strictest Carlsberg Denmark supervision. It’s basically the same full flavoured, full bodied, easy drinking, solidly refreshing beer you already know, but less alcohol. The Carlsberg mid 3.5 is a bold move for the Copenhagen crew and they’ve succeeded in creating a solid, premium mid that’s a cracker when it comes to throwing back a few after you’ve mowed the lawn, played your heart out at cricket or you’re heading off to church. I give it 3.5 out of 5 thumbs up. CARLSBERG LITE PALE LAGER 330ML 3.5% Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. MOTORING PREVIEW

PLENTY OF BANG FOR YOUR BUCK Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MERCEDES-BENZ A45 AMG.

U

sually, driving a four-cylinder hatchback is not something that tends to set my pulse racing. They’re generally practical, sensible and serviceable. And with the slow decline of the traditional Aussie sedan, they’ve become the go-to family transport for a growing number of families. But I don’t normally mark them down

with red pen in my diary. This one is different. This one, I’ve been looking forward to driving for almost as long as I can recall. Mercedes-Benz’s wicked little A45 AMG has done for the four-cylinder hatchback what Donald Trump has done for political debates. Perhaps the angriest car ever to wear the fabled three-point star, the A45 is a

long, long way from being your typical four-cylinder hatchback. Our chance to sample it – finally – arrived recently with the release of a mid-model update of the entire Mercedes A-Class range. The refresh delivers improvements across all models – including some improved engines and upgraded technology. In the case of the A45, it means a

handful of tweaks that further enhance its staggering performance, plus some additional safety technology and a few additional luxury items. But really, it’s all about the engine. Now, some people’s eyes glaze over when we start talking about power and performance figures. But the A45’s stats are worth dwelling on for a moment. When the first A45 was released a couple of years ago, it boasted the most powerful four-cylinder production engine ever created. In its latest guise it’s even more so. From just two litres of capacity, using direct injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger, it pumps out a mammoth 280 kilowatts and 475Nm. That’s an unheard of 140kW per litre. Put another way, if its bigger AMG stablemates produced the same level of output from their 6.3-litre V8s, they’d produce 882 kilowatts of power. What does that mean? Well, the A45 will scream (literally) from a standing start to the speed limit in a blurry 4.2 seconds. We’re talking Ferrari territory here, folks. The A45 is the kind of outcome you’d get if you left a group of mad, rev-head German scientists alone in a laboratory after a big night on the schnapps. Which, come to think of it, is pretty much what

MOTORING

Mercedes-Benz did when it set its AMG engineers loose on the A45. At its core is the standard Mercedes A-Class and all its inherently sensible, practical features. So, despite its race-ready capability the A45 it can also ably double as a reasonable family vehicle during the week – managing decent fuel economy (about 7L/100km, but substantially better when driven with restraint); not to mention five doors, ample comfort for four adults (five at a pinch), plenty of interior storage compartments plus decent cargo space. Its ride and handling characteristics are clearly biased toward its hard-edged personality, although the suspension settings can be softened using the Dynamic Select knob that adjusts ride, handling, steering, transmission and engine settings. It goes from mild to wild in the flick of the finger. The wild end of the spectrum is now wilder than ever before in this new model, thanks to a Race setting that delivers ultimate urgency from engine and transmission. The 4Matic all-wheel-drive system delivers power to all four wheels via a complex centre differential, adding an astonishing level of grip to the flat, predictable handling and ultra-stiff

chassis setup. The A45’s steering is laser-sharp, turn-in unerringly quick and poised and its ability to recover from any road irregularities is reassuring. As with most cars of this pedigree, its capabilities extend considerably beyond the point at which most drivers’ bravery has run out. Perhaps the most striking thing about the A45 is how ‘un-Mercedes’ it is. Even its bigger, more expensive AMG siblings – like the C63 and E63 models that have become strong sellers in Australia – deliver their sledgehammer performance wrapped in the velvety smoothness of their big, purring V8 engines. By contrast there’s an altogether more raspy, unpolished appeal to the A45. It sounds fabulous but abrasive at the same

time – a barking, squarking note from its big oval-shaped exhausts punctuated by a crackle and pop as the seven-speed sports transmission does its thing. Despite the arsenal of go-fast improvements, the A45’s dynamic performance owes much to the excellence of the A-Class upon which it is based. The fabulous Recaro sports seats, the flat-bottomed steering wheel and racy external spoilers and body kit don’t fully disguise the thoughtful cabin layout, smart ergonomics and cabin ambiance. It also inherits one of the few design shortcomings of the standard A-Class - a lack of visibility when reversing, particularly around those attractive but obstructive rear pillars. Those pillars help deliver the A45’s squat, powerful stance but don’t help when you’re trying to squeeze into a tight parking space (despite the excellent reversing camera). Beyond that, it’s very hard to find fault with this phenomenal little machine. Of course, all this comes at a cost – $77,900 plus onroads – which is roughly double the entry-level price for a new A180. Still, that’s less than half of what you’ll pay for the next rung up the AMG ladder, so it’s still pretty decent buying. Very definitely not your average four-cylinder hatchback.

HOW BIG? It’s a standard hatchback size – but with thoughtful design it delivers plenty of legroom front and rear, plus decent cargo space beneath that hatch. HOW FAST? Blindingly. Ridiculously. Fabulously. It’s the fastest car of its type in the world and its performance rivals supercars costing five times as much. HOW THIRSTY? If you drive it sensibly, you could manage better than 7L/100km. But wasting a bit of extra fuel means enjoying one of the best driving experiences I can recall. So bugger the fuel economy. HOW MUCH? It costs $77,900. That’s either a very expensive small car (which it is) or the most bang for your buck of any vehicle on the road.

Sunshine Coast real estate agency has proved its high rating place in the market by cleaning up at last month’s Queensland First National Real Estate awards. The First National Mooloolaba branch won eight gongs at the annual General Excellence and Marketing Awards, which celebrate the best of Queensland’s real estate performances over the past year. The office placed third overall in the entire state and won the highest number of exclusive listings and settled sales in the residential large, commercial large and combined large office categories. Mooloolaba also won the highest gross sales commission in the residential large office category and the highest gross sales and leasing commission in the commercial large office section. The winners were announced on March 19 at a gala held at the Sofitel Brisbane. Mooloolaba principal Paul Angell says he was surprised and pleased with the win.

SURF REPORT

Two wins, from two starts - are you kidding me? Matt Wilkinson was on fire at Bells. Who does that? Seems like the world title is his to lose. Now, we move on to Margaret River where the forecast does not seem epic but looks like contestable waves. It starts on the weekend so tune in. Should be fun. Around these parts there is not too much to get excited about so get comfortable and watch the contest. Me? I am heading to Byron Bay Hinterland to chase some waterfalls. Now we are about to get invaded by Clubbies from around Australia so be patient and your chances of surfing between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore are zero so head north to Peregian Beach!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are in good numbers from Cotton Tree to Picnic Point and along Bradman Avenue, using prawns, yabbies and fowl gut. Chopper tailor and trevally are at Maroochy Bar with whitebait the best bait. You can get whiting and flathead on cured worms or yabbies on the drift around the entrance to Eudlo Creek. Mud crabs are in the deeper water. SURF: You can find jew in the deeper gutters near Twin Waters Surf Club using mullet fillet just after dusk. Tailor and sea bream are taking pillies at Pincushion and whiting and dart are along North Shore, with pippies the best bait. OFFSHORE: Water temp around 24-25 degrees. There are mac tuna just off Alexandra Headland with quality Spanish mackerel taking floated baits and trolling lures past The Blinker and down near Raper Shoals near Caloundra. East of Barwon Banks is the best place for black marlin on trolled baits and skirted lures. FRESHWATER: Water levels are at a good height at most local impoundments. Lake Borumba is open for fishing and returning saratoga on fly and bass on plastics. Plenty of action at Somerset with bass and golden perch taking trolled deep diver lures.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] It’s all about love and lust, as the planets galvanise your partnership and intimacy zones. So [if you are attached] plan something suitably romantic and sexy with your partner. Single? You won’t find your soul mate if you’re sitting at home sobbing about being solo.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] With the Sun, Venus and Uranus all in your career zone, it’s not the time to hole up in your cozy crab cave. Seize the moment! Lucky [and unexpected] opportunities are around, but you must be quick to grab them or they will pass you by.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] It’s time for loquacious lions to talk, text, tweet, mix and mingle, socialise, circulate and network with a stimulating new crowd. Travel, adventure and education are also high on the agenda, as Mercury encourages you to brainstorm with work mates.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] With success planet Jupiter transiting your sign [and forming a trine with your ruler, Mercury] don’t waste time being a bashful Virgo. Be enthusiastic about the opportunities that are around you as you explore and experiment.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] This week Venus forms a delicious trine with dynamic Mars. You’re at your charismatic, dynamic and sexy best, as you charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. Motivation and confidence are high, so don’t be shy about promoting your talents.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] This week Venus and Mars stimulate your urge to splurge on extravagant purchases. So perhaps it would be best for smart Scorpios to avoid shopping sprees. In the words of financier J. P. Morgan “If you have to ask how much it costs, you can’t afford it.”

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Jump off the comfy couch Sagittarius! This week’s dynamic stars encourage you to be proudly proactive, as you set professional goals and then actively pursue them. Not sure how to do that? Try rubbing shoulders with your kickass Aries friends.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] The focus is firmly on domestic matters, as peacemaker Venus helps the family pull together in a positive and proactive fashion. The more support and encouragement you give loved ones, the better. But avoid getting drawn into petty power plays mid-week.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The secret to success is communication as Mercury encourages you to look, listen and learn from those around you. Imagination and intuition are heightened on the weekend, when you tap into your unconscious mind and receive important inspiration.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Tuesday is the pick of the week, as the Mercury/Neptune connection boosts creativity, compassion and perception and you’ll feel a need to escape into a fantasy world via reading, writing, painting, playing music, day-dreaming or creative visualisation.

THE LAST WORD

TALKING GARBAGE If you can’t dispose of your rubbish responsibly, at least throw it on the floor of your car, writes Richard O’Leary.

I

didn’t realise people still threw litter out of their cars. I mean, I have seen the occasional idiot flick a cigarette butt out the window, but in recent times, nothing bigger than that. So I was surprised when I saw an empty (I assume it was empty) can of drink thrown out of the front passenger’s window of the black Lancer in front of me as I drove to the local shops. I was intrigued – who does that? I guess the evidence suggests a lot of people; bottles and cans are not unusual on the sides of most roads – heck, there’s occasionally a full lounge suite dumped near where I live. But sofas notwithstanding, there is an easier alternative than going to all the effort of throwing something out of your car… you just drop it on the floor. It’s convenient, it costs nothing and after a while the layer of filth gets to a level where it makes the use of the said

vehicle near impossible. That’s when you pull into your driveway and do the big drop off, carefully sorting the items into general waste and recyclables. The one distinct disadvantage of this approach is when you roll your car. I know that most of us don’t set out to do that, but it does happen, and I can tell you it isn’t pretty. In my early 20s, I managed to roll the EH Holden my father had lovingly

“I have seen the occasional idiot flick a cigarette butt out the window. . .” restored for me to use as my first vehicle. I wasn’t going fast, but the combination of a dirt road, an unusual camber and an inexperienced driver, saw the car overturn. I didn’t completely

roll it – I was going so slow I only managed to get halfway around, so it landed on its roof. But it was enough to prove one of the laws of physics: what goes up, must come down. In the case of my car, that meant months of fast food wrappers, drink bottles and a club lock crashing into me. At least no one was injured. Unless you count my father, who managed to cut off half a pinky finger while trying to retrieve a part from the wreckage a few years later. But lesson learnt – I got rid of the club lock. I disposed of it responsibly of course, because at the end of the day it’s up to all of us to play our part. And as one wit recently commented, we all need to start worrying about what sort of world we are going to leave Keith Richards. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
