OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

magine if you could live forever, all the things you could do. Or in all likelihood, all the things you could put off to another day. But procrastination is probably the lesser of the evils that could befall us if the predictions by some scientists are correct and we become the first generation with the potential to survive many hundreds of years. In our cover story, we take a look at immortality; what it means for you, society and the planet. Also this week you get the chance to have a quick chat with former Powderfinger drummer Jon Coghill about his new life as a journo on the Sunshine Coast, meet some of the artists coming out of the woodwork for an unusual expo in Maleny, and test drive Fiat’s attempt to turn its classic Fiat 500 into an SUV. There’s plenty of fashion, places to go, people to meet, opinions to be heard and exotic destinations to visit, and a property section with all the latest real estate news. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

SECOND LIFE

After 20 years in the spotlight as the drummer for Powderfinger, Jon Coghill is enjoying relative anonymity as a journalist for ABC Sunshine Coast. FIRST JOB?

house with the pencil fence and facade like a ship’s cockpit, then little cove at Noosa National Park, then Yandina markets.

Chinese takeaway in Nambour. I don’t remember the name of the restaurant but the owner was Ivan Wong. He ran the restaurant while doing year 12 at Nambour High. He told me I had to improve my writing because no one could work out the orders I wrote down. I wish I’d eaten more sweet and sour pork.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? I’d make Noosa Council gift me Tea Tree point and National Park point. Then I’d hire UFC champions to stop everyone surfing when I was out.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

I work at the ABC news bureau on the Sunshine Coast. I’m also working on my air reverses and 360 flips.

Friday afternoon after work.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My beautiful wife, two cheeky daughters and a dog named Cooper.

When I was 13, I got hit by a car and broke my leg. I bought a drum kit with the compensation from the accident. It helped get me a gig for 20 years in Powderfinger.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? I was known as blind dog Coghill when I didn’t wear my glasses. “Make sure you stop for the red fuzzy lights when driving”, my friends would say.

IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

FIRST CAR? 1986 Mitsubishi Sigma bought when I was 26 – 2.6 litres of silky power.

FAVOURITE BOOK? Too many, probably The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan would be the best I’ve read in the last few years. I read the internet last year but it wasn’t as good.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?

of my life other than 12 years in Brissy when I was in my 20s and 30s.

Not becoming the head of the United Nations or US President.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Being able to spell and write in coherent sentences.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m laughing with my family and friends… or is it when my family and friends are laughing at me?

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? Me.

The inside of my eyelids. I have toddlers.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

FAVOURITE SONG?

Because I’m close to family and friends. I’d move them all to Hawaii if I had the cash, then I’d move there too.

By getting angry, then trying to not be angry.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Under Pressure by David Bowie and Queen.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Always meet people with the attitude that you can learn something from them. Second best: wash your entire body or you’ll get pimples in the places you don’t.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS?

My home at Marcus Beach, dribbling on the couch after a busy day.

Have a shower, buy some deodorant, you smell.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

High tea.

My family moved here in 1975 or 76. I’ve lived here most

COVER STORY

NEVER SAY DIE

Incredible advances in science mean immortality is no longer the stuff of fiction but an increasingly likely reality. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

“By fooling around with the DNA, we’re looking at a healthy body that can behave like a teenage body for 500 to 1000 years. This is a shortterm effective immortality”

A

lthough there is no way of proving it, you could argue our obsession with immortality began shortly after the first human umbilical cord was cut with a sharp stone. It’s maybe no coincidence that the oldest piece of western literature that still exists, The Epic of Gilgamesh (written c. 2150–1400 BCE) focuses on one man’s quest to live forever. In the story, which pre-dates Homer’s writings by 1500 years, King Gilgamesh falls into a deep grief when his best friend is struck dead. He spends the rest of his days trying to find the meaning of life and how to avoid death. It’s a theme that has been repeated consistently throughout recorded history. In Greek mythology, Eos asks Zeus to make her lover Tithonus immortal, but she forgets to ask that he be granted eternal youth as well. This means Tithonus survives forever but becomes increasingly decrepit and eventually begs for death. Oscar Wilde warmed to that theme in The Picture of Dorian Gray, where the main character does a deal with devil so his portrait ages rather than himself. He embarks on a life that ignores society’s conventional standards of morality, among his many sins – murder. As you may suspect, it doesn’t end with “and they lived happily ever after”. 14 My Weekly Preview | April 15, 2016

14.indd 1

But what if you could live forever, without interference by tricky gods and Faustian bargains? Futurist and scientist Ray Kurzweil not only thinks it is possible, he says it will happen within 30 years. The vitamin gobbling lead engineer at Google believes microscopic machines will be introduced into our bodies to repair damaged cells and organs. If it was anyone but Kurzweil, you could easily write it off as the stuff of science fiction, but this is a man who has been awarded America’s highest

allowing you to say alive long enough to take advantage of future medical breakthroughs. To that end, 68-year-old Kurzweil takes about 150 supplements a day and undergoes regular scans on his arteries to check for plaque buildup. The second bridge takes you to a point in time where the biotechnology revolution is underway, which will allow scientists to reprogram biology away from disease, and thus extend lifespans well beyond the current expectations. “Bridge three is to go beyond biology, to the nanotechnology revolution. At this

“If time were limitless, what sort of beings would we become? Not humans as historically understood...” Dr Phillip Ablett

technology honour, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. In an interview with Canada’s Maclean’s magazine, he outlines the three bridges you need to cross to get close to the elixir of youth. The first bridge buys you time –

point, we can have little robots, sometimes called nanobots, that augment your immune system. We can create an immune system that recognise all disease, and if a new disease emerged it could be reprogrammed to deal with new pathogens,” he says.

Theoretically, this would allow us to live forever. But is that a bridge too far? Not according to Australia’s best known scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who agrees the concept of forever young is not too far away. In 1997 he predicted the unlocking of our DNA would lead humans to the Holy Grail of eternal youth. He says genetic engineering will allow us to modify human beings to get rid of nasty diseases and recent advances in science show he is on the right track. CRISPR is a new genome editing tool that could alter the human germline. It allows scientists to edit genomes with unprecedented precision, which has seen a number of firsts; targeted mutations in monkeys, the prevention of HIV infection in human cells and a Chinese experiment with nonviable human embryos. Kruszelnicki also predicts genetic engineering will be used to repair our body parts as they start to wear out. “Practically all the systems of the body slowly lose function with time – the skin, the bone, the lens in the eye which stiffens so that you gradually lose the ability to focus, the muscles, the kidneys, the heart and blood vessels, the liver, and so on. “Once all of these have been rejuvenated, by fooling around with the DNA, we’re looking at a healthy body that can behave like a teenage body for 500 to 1000 years. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

“This is a short-term effective immortality – so people living today could be the first generation to live ‘forever’, or the last generation to die.” Kruszelnicki’s original prediction was that immortality could be a possibility within 20 years …which would make 2017 the due date. He now concedes that won’t happen, but says that doesn’t mean the death of the idea, it’s just a delay. And what’s a couple of decades difference when you are talking about living forever? But being able to do something is one thing. Whether it is right or not, is quite another. Dr Phillip Ablett, a lecturer in Sociology at the University of the Sunshine Coast says the possibility of immortality raises questions about the definition of what it is to be human. “All recorded human civilisations have thought of this-worldly life as mortal; circumscribed by death, regardless of whether they believed in an after-life or not. Many of the ancient mythologies, religions and contemporary art have explored this theme about human life and have told stories about immortals or gods to highlight what this means for our existence,” he says. “The German philosopher Martin Heidegger argued that mortality is the defining feature of human existence – we are always in a state of being-towardsdeath. This makes time extremely important to us. At our best, we humans have sought ways of leading worthy lives before death. Immortality would radically challenge our entire way of living.” “Removing or even significantly shifting the boundary of mortality would change every previous culture and not necessarily for the better. If time were limitless, what sort of beings would we become? Not humans as historically understood.” “There is a strong possibility that we could eventually want for meaning in our lives beyond hedonistic gratification. I would also be concerned that our desires for pleasure and power would all be accentuated rather than our powers of

Open Day

creativity and care.” But it’s not just philosophical issues he’s concerned about, Ablett says there are ethical ones as well. “Life extension technologies will not be cheap and people will seek to maximise profits from these technologies. In a world of global inequality where the top one per cent already own more than 50 per cent of the earth’s wealth, this means access to these technologies will not be equal.”

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki “Initially at least, it will be lifeextension for an elite. Moreover, access will not depend on your moral worth or intelligence but on how much money you possess. So, it will reinforce existing inequalities along the lines of class, gender, race and disability. I don’t think that will make the world a better place to live in for most of humanity.” But it’s not all doom and gloom. Ablett says extended lifespans would also provide great opportunities, albeit coupled with great risks. “Human beings are capable of great good and great evil. It could mean more time to put the best of our learning and artistry to good use and address the world’s most urgent problems. When people like Gandhi or Nelson Mandela die, we wish they could have stuck around much longer – it seems a terrible waste.

“On the other hand, excessive longevity would extend the lives of those who seek to maintain their power and privilege – it could also prolong individual malice and exploitation. Extending lifespan would extend the potential of all sides of the human experience, the edifying and the diabolical.” There are also fears if people live longer, many of the major problems faced by our planet could get even worse: overcrowding, wealth inequality, ageing population, and mental health issues. Additionally, immortality poses tricky questions for the world’s religions. The Venerable Namgyel from the Chenrezig Centre in Eudlo says Buddhists meditate on death to give them a greater appreciation of how every day is a gift. “If you think like that, you’ll get a lot of energy. Whereas if you are thinking, oh I’ve got 500 more years or 1000 more years, I wonder what it would do to the amount of energy we would put into Dharma practice [applying Buddha’s teachings in daily life].” “We could become lazy. What would we do with all that time? We could get bored, we could get depressed. It’s a good thing we have a lifespan. Death can happen at any moment and so we have that feeling that I should get on with it. “But if the scientists take that away from us, I’m not sure what the result of that is going to be. My question to the scientists would be, why would you do this? Is it just for people who have lots of money, can afford it? And what about the rest of us? Is that ethical? “The smallest number [of people] will take advantage, the biggest number will use it for more greed, more anger, more hatred.” And maybe that’s what it comes down to – not how long we live on this earth, but what we do with the time provided. In the The Epic of Gilgamesh, the protagonist does end up dying, but he gains immortality of another kind when his many good deeds are remembered long after his passing. A life well lived.

5 OLD SCHOOL WAYS TO BECOME IMMORTAL Eat a mermaid – In Japanese mythology a girl was ‘cursed’ with immortality after eating the meat of a ningyo – a Japanese mermaid. Anger a god – In Greek mythology, Sisyphus was sentenced to an eternal life of rolling a boulder up a hill every day, only to have it roll back down every night. Eat gold or mercury – Especially popular during 600 to 900 AD in China – many of the Tang Dynasty emperors had their lives shortened by this mistaken elixir for eternal youth. Drink ambrosia – In Greek mythology the gods drank this magical potion which tasted like honey and delivered immortality. Find the Holy Grail – In Christian mythology, eternal life is granted to whoever drinks from the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper.

WHAT IS CRISPR? CRISPR is an acronym for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeat. This name refers to the unique organisation of short, partially palindromic repeated DNA sequences found in the genomes of bacteria and other microorganisms. While seemingly innocuous, CRISPR sequences are a crucial component of the immune systems of these simple life forms. The immune system is responsible for protecting an organism’s health and wellbeing. Just like us, bacterial cells can be invaded by viruses, which are small, infectious agents. If a viral infection threatens a bacterial cell, the CRISPR immune system can thwart the attack by destroying the genome of the invading virus. The genome of the virus includes genetic material that is necessary for the virus to continue replicating. Thus, by destroying the viral genome, the CRISPR immune system protects bacteria from ongoing viral infection. Source: Harvard University – Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

STUDENTS PLAY THE PAJAMA GAME Nambour’s St John’s College is preparing to stage the fun and award-winning musical The Pajama Game at Caloundra’s The Events Centre. Sixty students will star in the musical, which centres around the working conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory, where it is anything but peaceful, as conflict grows into love between the new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, the leader of the Grievance Committee. The show is on April 22 and April 23. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for pensioners, students and children. For tickets visit theeventscentre.com.au.

Visitors to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve can expect to see some construction activity at the reserve as work begins on a building renewal project. The project is expected to be completed mid2017 and visitors will be able to enjoy an educational experience at the new Discovery Centre, with an elevated viewing platform and boardwalk and meeting theatrette. The upgrade will also feature a conservation research area and offices for the volunteers. The Forest Walk will remain open during the works and visitors will still be able to enjoy the remainder of the park and the barbecue and picnic area during construction.

MOOLOOLABA REDESIGN The plan to turn Mooloolaba into a world class beach destination has taken a step forward, with Sunshine Coast Council calling for design specialists to tender for the design of the foreshore. Division four councillor John Connolly said the foreshore design was one of the first stages of the endorsed Place Making Mooloolaba Master Plan. Once detailed design has been completed, the council will apply for state or federal grants to proceed with construction. The master plan brings together four key precincts – the Foreshore and Esplanade, the Mooloolaba Heart, the Wharf and the Southern Gateway.

FIRST STEMM MUM FINISHES UNIVERSITY Mooloolaba resident Tamarah Randell last week became the first young mother from Burnside High’s STEMM program to graduate from the University of the Sunshine Coast. STEMM supports pregnant teenagers and young mothers to continue their education. Participants can study subjects from USC’s Tertiary Preparation Pathway (TPP) to prepare for university. Randell, 25, completed four TPP subjects through the 18-month STEMM program before enrolling in USC’s Bachelor of Nursing, which she completed part-time while raising her daughter Sasha-Jayde, now aged six. She has secured employment as a registered nurse at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

DIGITAL CHAMPIONS

As part of Digital Sunshine Coast program, 26 local businesses, organisations and individuals have been recognised as Community Digital Champions to encourage more locals to adopt digital technologies and services. Three were also recently named as Advance Queensland Digital Champions in recognition of their achievements in improving Queensland’s digital literacy and digital adoption. Warana-based Aluminium Balustrade North Coast General Manager Sam Bevis says he hopes to use his Digital Queensland Champion status to inspire more Sunshine Coast businesses to discover and benefit from digital technologies.

250,000 METRES The final of the 10 tower cranes installed on site at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital have been removed from the main hospital building with the completion of the building’s internal fit-out on track for this month. This will include ceilings, internal walls, floor finishes, painting and the installation of services including more than 38,000 data outlets and about 250,000 metres of data cabling. The hospital will open with about 450 beds in April 2017.

CALOUNDRA FAREWELLS LOCAL HERO Caloundra has farewelled a true gentleman and community stalwart. Cliff Hargreaves – fondly known as Mr Currimundi – passed away late last month. He has been remembered as an extraordinary man. Mr Hargreaves spent most days of the past 40 years voluntarily removing rubbish from around Lake Currimundi. He was named Clean Up Australia Day’s Local Hero for Queensland in 2010, was the president of the Amputee Support Society of the Sunshine Coast and was a member of Currimundi Neighbourhood Watch and the Friends of Currimundi Lake environment group. He was 87.

PROFILE

FAMILY CRAFTING ROSY FUTURE AT WOOD EXPO A love of wood runs in the family for this award-winning woodcarver and her talented nephew.

S

andra Skodnik and her nephew Rhyce Skodnik share a passion for crafting beautiful pieces of art and furniture out of wood, which they’re getting ready to show off to thousands of wood lovers at the 20th Maleny Wood Expo. Sandra started woodworking as a youngster, playing with tools at her father’s workbench. While her two brothers followed careers working with wood, one at a timber mill and one as a cabinet maker, she trained as a graphic artist and initially saw woodworking as a hobby. Today, she devotes most of her week to carving and sculpture, preferring to work in camphor laurel and salvaged rose mahogany and huon pine. “I use a traditional hand carving method with chisels, but I’m starting to use some power tools now that I’m getting into working with harder timbers, including burls,” explains Sandra. Her inspiration comes principally from nature – she spends many hours taking photos and collecting objects and then reproducing them in wood. Sandra’s award-winning piece, Nature’s Design, which won the 2011 Maleny Wood Expo’s Wootha Prize, was inspired by a worn-out whelk shell, which she still has. “I also like doing freeform sculptures out of recycled timber, for example, the whale tail came from seeing the tail in a piece of salvaged red cedar,” she says. “I just carved the wood away to release the tail from within.”

heavy-duty ute, crane truck, bandsaw mill and a Lucas portable mill. The kiln, a repurposed standard shipping container with a fireplace inside, is unloaded from the top with his crane truck. Wood stays in the kiln for up to three months, during which time it is tested regularly with a moisture meter. Rhyce’s furniture commissions include beds, dining tables and hall tables, in timbers such as silky oak and rosewood. “I love the challenge of designing and making complicated pieces,” he reflects. “One of my customers wants a table with a glass insert, so I’m working on that at the moment.” While Rhyce and Sandra have yet to work together professionally, they have talked about collaborating, with Rhyce making a piece of furniture and Sandra carving one of her nature-inspired designs on it – a potential new chapter in this talented family’s already impressive portfolio. The Skodniks are among 90 exhibitors displaying their work at the Maleny Wood Expo, Saturday April 30 to Monday May 2 at Maleny Showgrounds. The expo showcases timber furniture, toys, instruments, carvings and sculptures, with all wood artisans and exhibitors required to work in sustainably harvested native timbers, weed or recycled timbers. Visit www.malenywoodexpo.com.

Rhyce Skodnik and his aunt Sandra Skodnik, with her whale tail sculpted from red cedar Rhyce, meanwhile, has been fast-tracking an apprenticeship in furniture and cabinet making with renowned woodworker David Linton in Maleny, completing it late last year. At just 25, he is now busy making bespoke furniture for clients, and a range of smaller pieces for two Sunshine Coast galleries, with a view to exhibiting and selling through galleries around Australia. “I mill and dry my own timber from salvaged logs,” Rhyce says proudly. At just 25, he has built his own kiln and owns a

Sunshine’s Beach Bar and Grill, home of the famous Killer Bee cocktail, is a popular beach bar on the Caribbean island of Nevis

Paradise Beach Resort Nevis

LIVING THE HIGH LIFE IN NEVIS The unspoilt Caribbean paradise of Nevis is a heavenly haven for total relaxation. By Ben Wright

A

hummingbird buzzes past me as I relax in my private pool, mulling over whether I should spend the rest of the day here or at the beach. I watch intently as the small bird pauses to hover above a pink hibiscus flower, but before I have time to

pick up my camera, it darts off at an impossible speed. It’s no coincidence these tireless birds are a common sight around the gardens of Paradise Beach on the West Indies island of Nevis, as the gardeners have specifically selected oleander, firecracker and hibiscus

plants to attract them to the grounds stretching down to the peaceful beach. At the northern end of the Lesser Antilles archipelago and neighbouring St Kitts, picturesque Nevis was named Oualie (land of the beautiful waters) by early Caribs.

Much quieter than other Caribbean islands, it’s an unspoilt idyll overflowing with flora and fauna. The luxurious seven-villa Paradise Beach resort opened in 2015, and offers the only beachfront villas on the island, with concierge and butler service. Meticulous care has been taken in the design of the villas to ensure the resort lives up to its name. Each bungalow has its own pool with a cabana for eating outdoors, as well as

loungers where guests can lie back and enjoy their own corner of paradise. The indulgence continues inside with a giant four-poster bed dominating the main bedrooms, along with a powerful outdoor rain shower in the ensuite, which is so welcoming and decadent I find any excuse to have yet another shower. At the centre of the living space is a fully equipped kitchen allowing you to enjoy the gourmet delights of the island without having to leave your bungalow. The resort can provide a chef to prepare meals for you, or those keen to show off their culinary skills can conjure

dishes at their own convenience. One evening our cook, Paulette, prepares a traditional meal of mahi-mahi fish and fried plantains, and each morning she awakes our senses with a range of zesty juices. She also introduces us to the Nevitian breakfast speciality of saltfish with Caribbean Johnny cakes – a delightful break from my usual muesli routine. Another highlight of the resort is its tranquil beach, which has its own bar. There’s a wonderful view across to the neighbouring island of St Kitts and guests can rent kayaks and paddle-boards for an

afternoon of adventure on the calm sea. While swimming in the bath-warm Caribbean waters, I’m amazed to see a frigatebird as large as a pterodactyl circling above before flying off to playfight with its friends. Below the surface, there are also many unusual creatures to admire. Keen scuba divers can explore the surrounding reefs, wrecks and volcanic vents, and those lucky enough may even encounter giant leatherback and hawksbill turtles. Guests can reach higher states of relaxation by taking part in jet lag-busting yoga sessions on the beachside decking, or enjoy massages in their rooms. The feeling of escape and privacy goes beyond the borders of the resort. Nevis, which has a population of just 12,000, was the hideaway of choice for Princess Diana. At only 10 kilometres across, the island, serviced by a small airport, is easily accessible by bicycle or car and only a short ride from the resort is the capital Charlestown, a quaint high street of souvenir shops, banks and stores, all painted in the bright colours of the Caribbean. Nearby are equally colourful, relaxed bars and restaurants serving high-quality spicy seafood accompanied by potent rum cocktails – no trip is complete

without a Killer Bee concoction at Sunshine’s or grilled red snapper at Bananas Restaurant. At the centre of the green island is the ‘potentially active’ volcano Nevis Peak. One morning, we set off to explore its densely forested slopes with the help of our local guide, Baba, who leads us on a trek to some spectacular waterfalls. Along the way, we stop to study the vegetation and he explains the many creative uses islanders have for the different bark and plants. Sarsaparilla is apparently used to boost sexual energy. But whether hiking the forests, taking catamaran trips to snorkel with luminescent fish or enjoying sunset horseback rides, my lasting memory of Nevis is of a blissful retreat from the stresses of everyday life. * The writer travelled as a guest of ITC Luxury Travel.

Molly’s makeup obsession bssession Eighties teen queen Molly Ringwald is no has-been. The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink actor is still in the acting biz and has branched out into writing and music. A self-confessed makeup addict, her current obsession is Benetint from Benefit, a tinted lip balm that she says “seems to restore your lips to that bee-stung colour you had when you were a girl”. She’s also a big fan of Benefit’s concealer, which she says doesn’t get stuck in the fine lines under the eyes and bronzer, which gives a nice sun-kissed look. Benetint is a rose-tinted lip and cheek stain that is naturally sheer and suits all complexions. It gives a natural-looking flush to cheeks and lips and lasts for hours. To use, apply three dots to the apples of the cheeks and blend quickly with fingertips. Add a few more dots for deeper colour, $55 from Myer.

MATCH YOUR TATTS Get the same intense colour and tenacity of a tattoo on your eyelids with Maybelline New York’s EyeStudio Color Tattoo Eye Shadow. The hott pour formula locks in the vivid colour for 24 hours, with a silicon resin wax combining with volatile e fluids to impart a creamy, high impact look. Shades include Edgy y Emerald, Too Cool, Audacious Asphalt, Tenacious Teal, Tough Ass Taupe, Bad To The Bronze, Painted Purple and Bold Gold, $11.95 from pharmacies and department stores.

How often should guys get a haircut? About every three to six weeks, depending on the style. The more you tell your stylist about your hair and how you want it to look, the better. While the short back and sides with a little more on top has been the prevailing trend for men’s hair, New York stylists are predicting a shaggier look will be coming back in. If you have a big event coming up, like a wedding or a job interview, get your hair cut a couple of days before to allow the cut to settle. Remember: stylists say the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is three days.

Try: To keep your style looking smooth, try Dax Super-Neat Water Rinseable Hair Crème. It washes out with water and gives hair a soft, natural look with medium hold, $11.95 from Myer, Price Attack and Priceline.

MY LIFE

SLEEP SOLUTIONS Want to ditch the sleeping pills? James Colquhoun from Food Matters shares his top tips for dealing with insomnia naturally.

T

ossing, turning and hopelessly counting sheep… insomnia is tortuous. Left unchecked, it can harm our health, mood, productivity and general quality of life. Here are my top tips for better sleep: Bring on the black – darkness sends signals to our brain that it’s time to wind down. On the flip side, bright lights keep our brain switched on in wake mode. Tune out – invest in some soft, ‘sleep’ headphones. These are padded, super comfortable and tend to do a better job of blocking out distracting sounds. Try the 4-7-8 trick. Pioneered by Dr Andrew Weil, 4-7-8 breathing is one of the simplest yet most effective tools you can use to access instant calm. Simply inhale through your nose for a count of 4, gently hold this breath for 7 counts and exhale slowly for another count of 8. Try aromatherapy, which it has been used for centuries as a natural sleep

remedy. Lavender, roman chamomile, neroli, orange and petitgrain essential oils are all potent sleep aids. Hang your worries on a worry tree – many experts recommend journalling out any anxious thoughts. Savour a sleepytime snack – there is some evidence to suggest that a light snack containing low glycaemic index carbohydrate can help us get to sleep. Try a small banana, handful of blueberries, healthy oatmeal biscuit or small slice of sourdough toast before heading to bed. Use all your senses – instead of simply ‘seeing’ a relaxing visualisation in your mind’s eye, try to recruit all your senses to imagine a relaxing scene unfolding. What does this scene actually feel like? Smell like? Experts say that recruiting all senses will guide you deeper into visualisations.

Migraines and headaches can be debilitating, with a host of causes. So which are impacting your life? Understanding why migraines occur can be quite a mystery, plaguing many for most of their lives. If you’re a migraine sufferer, you probably have been since childhood, though that’s not true for everyone. A migraine may cause such extreme pain that you may be hospitalised with intense noise and light sensitivity, vision disturbances, extreme nausea, violent headache and vomiting. There are many however, that will suffer with hormonal migraines causing intense throbbing in different parts of the temple or forehead, beginning in the neck, or shoulder as intense muscle pain. Hormonal migraines often last up to three days, though every migraine sufferer is different, and every migraine type is different. For some, migraines that seldom occur may be caused by structural problems such as misalignment of the spine, or muscle tension. For many others, migraines can be caused by a number of biochemical reasons that trigger a cascade of events in the brain. Once the cascade begins, it is difficult to stop the process that results in the intense pain of a migraine.

Getting to the cause of your particular problem can change your life, as migraines may be a symptom of a much larger problem. Stress has an incredible impact on your hormones, raising your cortisol levels, which in turn reduces your DHEA levels. The reduction of DHEA influences the menstrual cycle in women, and testosterone in men, creating hormonal migraines as a symptom. An imbalance between progesterone and oestrogen can also create migraines. Hormonal imbalances may be genetic, as is often the case with migraine sufferers. A liver response caused by food or chemical sensitivities is the most common cause, yet you may not be reacting to the typical offenders. For some, even the most simple of foods such as fruit or vegetables could be your trigger. The liver is responsible for neutralising toxins and clearing them from the body, however, when it is overloaded, the enzymes required become deficient. These enzymes, are also necessary for the production of serotonin, the happy brain chemical. A sudden drop in serotonin, may then trigger the cascade of events in the brain leading to migraine. Adequate pathology testing is imperative. Getting the right help can identify the biochemical and hormonal imbalances behind your migraines. For further information about your particular health concerns, contact Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre for a free half hour consultation, and get the help you need for a better, pain free future.

MY OPINION

NO TIME TO WASTE

CAN WE FIX IT? YES WE CAN

Sami Muirhead has zero time for zero living, but she’s willing to give it a try.

Andrew Pitcher says we need to think outside the square and put all options on the table in order to resolve our infrastructure issues.

T

he goal posts really keep changing when it comes to expectations of how we are living. Chia seeds and acacia berry juice are both so 2015. If you are wanting to join the Joneses, then get on board with zero living. It’s about living a completely rubbishfree life. No trash is sent to landfill or incinerators. Some people are so good at this they can fit two years of rubbish into a mason jar. And they proudly show off their tiny mason jar with their ethically stellar lifestyle choices on Instagram. These recycling rogues resist the temptation to buy anything in packaging that cannot be recycled and support bulk food shops. I feel so guilty and a tad annoyed when I see these young hipsters holding up their jars with a smug look on their faces. I feel guilty because while I do recycle, I also pollute the world too much. Our bin is always chock full of disgusting baby nappies, empty coffee cups and plastic wrappings from biscuits and frozen meat pies. I know you can buy cloth nappies and they are back in fashion. But we have a little army of polluters working super hard and I just cannot commit to the cloth nappy. So I guess I am the commander in chief of the rebels. Do you remember those egg timers the council distributed so we could all

W

time our three-minute shower? It ruined showers forever for me as I was lathered in guilt and panic about the stupid timer running out. But I have decided it is time to dip my foot in the zero living challenge. An easy way for us all to start is by carrying reusable water bottles (I do this but the top is caked in red crusty lipstick remnants and smells a bit funky), taking our own bags to buy fruit and vegetables, and our own coffee cup to our local cafe to be filled up with the true nectar of the Gods: coffee. Australians have been estimated to use one billion disposable coffee cups each year. That is crazy. The next step is to buy bulk food where you take your own containers. This limits what you throw out and may help you lose weight and feel healthier because you buy less processed food. If any of us make it to the next phase after that, it involves things such as making your own cosmetics which is one of the hardest products to generate without waste. I am flat out making play dough, let alone my own mascara. If you want to take baby steps with me and try harder to recycle more, there is a brilliant website called therogueginger. com.Check it out. It sounds like a site dedicated to Prince Harry and his partying ways involving nudism in Las Vegas, but it is actually a very clever Aussie girl leading the zero living charge.

e’re starting to have some better conversations in Australia about the future. While there is plenty of rhetoric, there is an emerging view about the society and economy we need. February’s National Infrastructure Audit was a good example of looking at our needs over the next century. On the Sunshine Coast we are desperately short of modern and scalable infrastructure. We need new public assets and services to improve our quality of life, to increase our productivity, to enhance our safety and to make better use of our environment. We certainly don’t want to be like the gridlocked, over-built, smokefilled and environmentally damaged regions we often deride. How do we invest ahead of the curve? We have many levels of government involved in infrastructure decisions, with little commonality in prioritisation or execution. Our council is responsible for the airport expansion, the light rail proposal, the new CBD and various improvements to public spaces and parking. Our State Government will decide on the rail duplication, the rail ‘spur’ from the foot of the Glasshouse Mountains to Maroochydore, upgrades to the Sunshine Motorway and the Mooloolah River interchange. The Federal Government is the primary stakeholder in the NBN, the Bruce Highway

expansion and the undersea cable protection zone creation. Funding and executing these projects simultaneously, and in a fiscally constrained environment, is going to be a significant challenge. We are either going to have to lower our expectations or change the way we think about them as investments. Some of these initiatives will be funded from general expenditure, but that will be slow. We are going to need to embrace other mechanisms – public-private partnerships, user pays (tolls), the potential sale of public assets, increasing taxes and different project sourcing strategies. All of these options should be on the table and assessed on a case-bycase basis. We also need to consider a more co-ordinated approach to execution. It can’t be completely political. We could create an independent, bi-partisan, multi-level infrastructure authority for the region that has real authority to deliver the required investment over multiple electoral terms. Delivering the infrastructure we need for the 2020s will be hard enough. Delivering what we need for the next 50 years will require unbelievable execution and your attention. Steve Jobs and Apple coined the slogan: ‘Think Different’. We need to.

RETIREMENT PROMOTION

OPEN DAY FOR NATURES EDGE VILLAGE

P

ride, excitement and anticipation are evident at Natures Edge Buderim this week, as staff and home owners prepare to welcome hundreds of men, women and extended family to their open day at the stunning over 50s rainforest community based at the foothills of Buderim this Saturday 16th April from 11am to 2pm. Unrivalled with its unique rainforest setting, Natures Edge is central to all the Sunshine Coast has to offer and deemed to be one of Australia’s leading retirement locations. The lock up and go lifestyle offered is one of the primary motivators for baby boomers who choose to call Natures Edge home. Natures Edge Buderim is not a traditional retirement village and as such has no exit fees, no entry fees, no stamp duty, no rentals, and no worries. You retain all your capital gains, you can

have as much or as little fun as you want, you can mingle with other like-minded home owners, and you can enjoy the luxury of living in a secure gated community with room for your RV, caravan or boat. The final working plans for the $2.5 million leisure centre are now completed and building will begin before the end of the financial year. All the homes in Natures Edge are eco friendly, architecturally designed with 8 star energy efficiency and all include solar power, fans and air conditioning. Each of these spectacular architecturally designed homes is purpose built to capture the best each season has to offer – breezes in summer and sunshine in winter and an equally pleasant autumn and spring. The exclusively over 50s lifestyle resort is within easy strolling distance to the attractive Forest Glen village which boasts a range of quality businesses

including the famous Forest Glen Bakery, Kunara Organic Café and Marketplace, and several barista run coffee houses. Join us for a coffee, refreshments and some fun this Saturday 16th April 2016 from 11am to 2pm at Natures Edge, 25 Owen Creek Road, Forest Glen. We would love to show you through our new display homes in the village. And if you are in the market to buy, we have homes available now ready to move into. You

may even meet some of our many vibrant residents all who have already chosen to call Natures Edge home. See you Saturday!

DREAM LAKESIDE LIVING

A

ward winning over 50s developer Halcyon has commenced construction on its third gated lifestyle community on the Sunshine Coast. Heavy machinery has been onsite preparing the civil works and construction of homes in the first release and is progressing with frames expected to go up in mid-April. Launched only recently, Halcyon Lakeside is set against a backdrop of natural bushland within the master planned Parklakes II at Bli Bli. Along with an enviable 5-Star lifestyle offering, the new community overlooks two lakes with 450 metres of lake frontage and access to 6km of walking tracks and local shopping. Project Director Chris Carley says

interest is so high that the first two releases of 52 homes in stage one have already sold out, off the plan, prompting the early unveiling of stage two. “To date buyers have predominantly been from the local areas of Bli Bli, Buderim and Twin Waters, however some have been from as far afield as Canberra,” says Chris. “They have been drawn to the fact they will be part of a peaceful pocket within a master planned community, The site’s water frontage is another major lifestyle drawcard”. Recently plans were revealed for the first time of the community’s multimillion dollar lifestyle and recreational precinct, with its championship sized bowling green, tennis court, pickleball courts, pools and health and wellness

centre. The centrepiece of the lifestyle and recreational precinct is the recreation club, which houses the cinema, library and substantial lounge areas that open to a lovely northern aspect and panoramic views over the landscape. Halcyon Joint Managing Director Dr Bevan Geissmann says the strong early buyer response reflects the demand for a new and sophisticated approach

to seniors living on the Sunshine Coast. “With the success of Halcyon Parks and Halcyon Landing, we have broken the mould of typical seniors living on the Sunshine Coast – it’s all about lifestyle”. “Early buyers are attracted to our model of creating great home designs with a feeling of space and lifestyle facilities that are without peer in this market”. “We believe it is the right mix of location and product that will appeal to the lifestyle-oriented over 50s”. To see plans for the latest release of homes in Stage Two please phone 1800 050 555 or visit the Halcyon Landing Display Home and Halcyon Lakeside Sales Centre located at 27 Waigani Street, Bli Bli.

RETIREMENT PROMOTION

NEW BOUTIQUE HOMES APPEAL TO DOWNSIZERS

L

iving life on the edge has never been so appealing. Boasting a prestigious address, water access and views, modern design and high quality craftsmanship, homes in the new gated community at Pelican Waters are being snapped up fast. Already, 50 per cent of luxurious boutique terrace development, The Edge Residences, has been sold and with only seven blocks now available, developer Brad Teys says interested buyers need to get in fast. “Predominantly it’s a unique boutique site, unlike any other,’’ he says. “The development is on a lovely piece of waterfront land sitting on the corner of two canals. “The properties are freehold and the body corporate fees are less than $16 a week, which is really cost effective and appealing to those looking to downsize in luxury. “This development features eight absolute waterfront positions with deep water access and six north facing residences.” Situated alongside the future Pelican

Waters town centre and the existing shopping centre, tavern and medical precinct, the development is also within walking distance to the popular Pumicestone Passage. Teys, who has spent the past 20 years developing commercial and residential sites, says another aspect that makes The Edge unique is a partnership with respected designer builders, Costa Constructions. As the developer’s preferred builder, the Costa team will work with owners to build their dream home. “People can design their own house there within development controls,’’ Teys explains. “We provide them with optimal style designs that they can work from. There are plenty of choices for colours, finishes and a multitude of design elements. “Costa is a high-end builder that focuses on customisation and that’s what we want to come out of this project… the quality of their product suits the quality of the development. The development targets retirees who are looking to downsize in luxury.” The homes will typically feature three

bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car garage, an entertainer’s kitchen, open plan living that opens onto an alfresco area and a lovely courtyard. “The development is two storeys but the design allows for the master bedroom to be downstairs,’’ Teys says. “Although most of the buyers are looking to downsize, there are much larger homes available on the site. We are currently working on one that has five bedrooms.’’

SNAPSHOT The Edge Residences feature waterfront or north facing blocks, secluded internal courtyards, airconditioning, square set high ceilings, glass balustrading, entertainer’s kitchen featuring stone benchtop and European appliances. Prices start at $585,000. For more information visit theedgeresidences.com.au.

MOTORING PREVIEW

A CAR WITH AN IDENTITY CRISIS Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the FIAT 500X CROSS PLUS

I

love the TV advertisement for Fiat’s latest model – the baby 500X. It starts with an elderly, rather amorous Italian gentleman who accidentally drops a Viagra pill (don’t ask) from the balcony of his villa. The little blue tablet tumbles down, bounces around and eventually finds its way into the fuel tank of a Fiat 500 Bambino.

As a result, Fiat’s famous little city car morphs into a bigger, more ‘virile’ machine – the new 500X – which is essentially a semi-macho, jacked-up version of the hugely cute Bambino. The message is pretty clear. All good fun, I guess. Unfortunately that’s about where the romance ended for me. The 500X is evidence, if ever we

needed it, that the SUV craze has gone completely… well… crazy. If the world truly needs a high-riding, pseudo off-road version of the iconic Fiat 500, I’m at a loss to explain why. Yes, there are competitors in this space – think Mazda’s brilliant CX-3 or Nissan’s funky Juke – both of which we’ve driven and enjoyed. But I’d have to say this new

model is not Italy’s finest moment. Fiat says the 500X has “leveraged the character and iconic features of the 500 into a larger and more mature package”. Perhaps so. But taking one of the smallest, least macho machines on the planet and turning it into a faux off-roader is quite an unlikely marriage. A ballerina wearing football boots, perhaps? Taylor Swift joining AC/DC? Let’s just say that it’s a unique entrant to the ever-growing, eversurprising SUV market. Despite its name, the 500X is not completely based upon the retro-styled Fiat 500. It’s bigger, with a total length of 4.25m – about 60 millimetres longer than the standard 500. Most of that is an extended rear end that delivers a useful 350 litres of cargo space. The 500X is also 1.8m wide and, most significantly, 1.65m high – with a H-point (the height at which the driver’s hip is elevated above the ground) of 669 millimetres. That means a much taller, more commanding driving position than its micro-car namesake – a key selling point for SUV buyers. The downside, though, is a heavily compromised driving experience. With its short wheelbase and elevated ride height, continued page 40 >

MOTORING

<from page 38 the 500X tends to pitch front-to-back, and sometimes side to side, on uneven surfaces. It verges on uncomfortable. Despite the extra metal, its family resemblance to the 500 is unmistakeable, although that doe-eyed, carry-me-home cuteness of the 500 seems strangely incongruous with this high-riding, all-wheel-drive format. It’s a conspicuous machine – a trait magnified by wide GT stripes running full-length down our test car’s roof and bonnet. It’s no place for those who prefer not to draw attention to themselves. So who will buy this car? Well, I suspect not many middle-aged males. Unless their name happens to be Mister Bean. And with prices starting at a not inconsiderable $28,000 for the entry-level version, it doesn’t necessarily fit the budget of well-heeled young things looking for funky city transport. It is, though, very well specified for that outlay – including a 6.5-inch highresolution touch-screeen, Bluetooth audio streaming, keyless entry and start plus, Fiat claims, as many as 60 standard or optional safety features. These include forward collision warning and avoidance, Lane Departure warning and active steering assist; blind-spot monitoring and

rear cross-path detection. That’s a lot of electronics to cram into a little car. The range features four trim options, the choice of two-wheel or all-wheeldrive; two turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engines and three transmissions – including six-speed manual and dualclutch automatic and a nine-speed auto on the top model. The cheaper Pop and Pop Star models get Fiat’s proven 103kW Multi-Air engine, while the upmarket Lounge and Cross Plus offer more power with a 1.4-litre, 125Kw turbo four. We drove the Cross Plus – with ample power and loads of equipment – but lacking the refinement we’ve come to expect of a small car with a rather inflated $39,000 price tag.

The engine is willing, although the nine-speed ZF auto – sublime in other vehicles we’ve driven recently – was something of a disappointment in the Fiat. Its herky-jerky operation, coupled with the car’s uneven ride characteristics, combined for a less than comfortable experience. That said, the 500X is certainly not without its virtues. For a start, its all-wheel-drive system means it is safer and better-handling than the regular 500. Equipment levels are high, the levels of finish are very strong and general presentation is first class. It also offers the driver a choice of three different driving modes – via the rather curiously-named Mood Selector. The Sport setting unquestionably delivers more response from the revvy little engine but also made the transmission surprisingly harsh, both under acceleration and while slowing down. Even after a week, I couldn’t quite make up my mind quite where the 500X fits – or who it’s aimed at. Certainly not me – and I suspect not the old fellow with the Viagra, either.

FIAT 500X CROSS PLUS HOW BIG? Loosely based on the tiny city car that shares its name, the 500X adds decent cargo space and a bit of interior room thanks to its extended body. But it’s still fairly compact – a good thing when parking, not so good when cramming adults into the rear seats. HOW FAST? Surprisingly so, for a car that looks a bit ungainly. We tested the most powerful 125kW, four-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers fairly spirited acceleration. But be warned, it doesn’t ride or handle like a sporty machine. HOW THIRSTY? For a small car with a small engine, its average thirst of 6.7L/100km is only an average result. But the nine-speed automatic transmission in the flagship Cross Plus model will ensure longlegged highway cruising. HOW MUCH? The base model starts at $28,000 – not cheap but a bargain compared to the confronting $39,000 ask for the flagship model we tested.

LIFE OF LUXURY Sustainability and style are the hallmarks of Sekisui House’s new development in Coolum.

A

new luxury home range has been released in Sekisui House’s beachside residential development at the Coolum Residences on the Sunshine Coast. Construction has started on the first six homes in the Affinity collection, which is in stage two of the Cala Luna gated community at The Coolum Residences. Sekisui House Senior Development Manager Evan Aldridge says the six homes have been architecturally designed in a close collaboration between Sekisui House lead designer Mitsuharu Yachi and local company Mode Design. “One of the key elements of the Affinity collection is its range of sustainability features, which is one of Sekisui House’s signature design incorporations. Each home has an 8-star energy rating and includes energy saving solutions such as a 3kW roof solar energy system,” Aldridge says. The Affinity collection includes a range of single and double-storey four-bedroom homes, with prices starting from $1.1 million.

LEAP OF FAITH

If you are a renter, now may be a good time to make the move to become a home owner.

T

aking the plunge from the rental market into the role of home owner is a big step and one that must be taken with plenty of consideration. However, it’s unlikely you will regret purchasing a prime piece of property. One of the nation’s leading agencies, First National Real Estate, has some tell-tale signs that now could be the right time to move from tenancy to titleholder… Mortgage companies are willing to lend Lending figures should certainly be on your radar if you’re thinking about buying. Although people’s individual situations vary, knowing whether lenders are increasing the availability of loans is a good place to start. January figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) offer some hope if you’re yet to take a closer look at houses for sale. It revealed that the number of loans granted for buying homes increased 0.4 per cent from the previous month in trend terms. This follows impressive lending data from a month earlier. The Housing Industry Association analysed the figures to find the monthly volume of new home loans for owner occupiers reached a six-year high over the course of December.

RATES ON HOLD

Renting is more expensive than buying Have you recently found that the amount of rent you’re paying out is on the rise? If so, then it might be time to think about paying off your own mortgage rather than your landlord’s. The ABS noted that in 2013-14, renters’ housing costs increased 4 per cent on the previous year. The Survey of Income and Housing discovered that renters dedicated around 20 per cent of their gross household income on housing costs, compared to 18 per cent for those with a mortgage.

Finding the ideal property is more difficult Demand for rental properties is rising, which can mean you’re up against stiff competition for the best houses for rent. Moving into a place of your own eliminates this challenge once you’ve found somewhere you love, it’s much easier to stay in one place. SQM Research revealed that in January, 2.7 per cent of properties across the nation were without tenants. This varied between cities, with Hobart’s market the tightest at 1.1 per cent. For more information visit firstnational.com.au

The Housing Industry Association has reacted to news that the Reserve Bank of Australia has once again left the official cash rate at two per cent. HIA economist Diwa Hopkins says it was no surprise. “The latest read of the economy shown by ABS national accounts data beat most expectations, with especially encouraging results found within the household sector. “Residential construction activity – both new home building and renovations investment – made substantial contributions to the three per cent overall annual growth in GDP at the end of 2015. “Inflationary pressures remain fairly subdued, with the renewed strength of the Australian dollar likely to ensure that this remains the case. However, (the) RBA statement identified the appreciation of the dollar as a potential impediment to the adjustment in the economy.” myweeklypreview.com.au

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Well I spent last weekend in Northern New South Wales and it seemed to me that a lot fewer people were in the water. I witnessed quite a few waves unridden. Sharks seem to be the common thread. So if you want to chase some uncrowded surf may I suggest south of Lennox Heads. What are the chances? As for this weekend – Sunday is looking the goods so have a blast. Not too many shark sightings here. Mooloolaba to Maroochydore will be impossible given the national surf titles. But Sunday will be good everywhere - light winds.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead are taking lures and baits from Bli Bli to the Cod Hole area upstream of the motorway bridge. Bream are about in numbers around Goat and Channel Island, but berleying is the only way to entice them to feed. Mangrove jack and mud crabs can be found up in Petrie Creek and around Bli Bli islands past the bridge. You can get trevally on plastics from Twin Waters weir to Cotton Tree. SURF: There are tarwhine and shovel nosed rays along Maroochy North Shore with tailor and bream at Pincushion, where whitebait on small ganged hooks result in better catches. Sand whiting and dart are in the gutters right along Maroochy Beach using pippies and sand worms. OFFSHORE: The area around The Blinker is providing good catches of mixed reef fish using squid and cut flesh baits. Out on the Barwon Banks you’ll find snapper, pearlies and heaps of iodine bream, which are a nuisance. Pillies and squid are the best baits with bigger fish on livies. FRESHWATER: You can get a few bass and togas on flies below the Lake Macdonald spillway with golden perch and bass on medium divers trolling the weed line in the dam. Wyangi Creek in Somerset is returning golden perch on deep divers and spinner baits on sunny days with shrimps working during overcast conditions. Red claw are also available

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) You may feel as if an important relationship is stalled (or going backwards) as Mars reverses through your partnership zone. It’s full steam ahead one minute, and the brakes are on the next. So aim to be flexible, rather than permanently frustrated.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) The Scorpio full moon signals an intense week, when unresolved issues with a loved one rise to the surface and demand to be addressed. Jealousy, possessiveness or power games could also be cause for concern.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) It’s time for cats to be confident, creative and proactive at work. But it’s not a wonderful week to host a family reunion or bring up sensitive childhood issues. The full moon falls in your home zone so be on domestic drama alert!

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Virgos are top communicators, perfectionists; and masters at multi-tasking. But the full moon disrupts your communication, travel and transport zones this week. But with Jupiter in your sign, strive to be more adventurous, as you grab opportunities with both hands.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Have you been shopping up a storm when you should have been saving? If the answer is ‘yes’ then you can expect a financial fiasco this week, as the full moon highlights money matters. It also brings up issues involving your personal values and/or self-esteem.

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Things will be pretty full-on this week, as the full moon increases your magnetism – and your tendency to brooding, obsessive behaviour. So you need to find appropriate ways to let off steam, and choose challenging projects to channel all your intense energy into.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Sagittarians are impulsive individuals! But spontaneous activity will be replaced by frustration this week, as Mars (planet of energy and action) reverses through your sign (until June 29). So expect some plans to backfire, while others are put on the back-burner.

Unnecessary expenditure (5) Falsehood (3) Very small amount (4) Long furrow (6) Insolvent (8) The existing condition (6,3) A very hot pepper (7) Strictly according to rule (2,3,4) Original invention (8) Bewitch (7) Prey (6) Humorous (5) Tidings (4) Successful fighter pilot (3)

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Casa Capricorn is a place where routine is revered. This week, life’s complicated, partnerships are unpredictable and the rules are constantly changing, as unresolved difficulties come back to test you. Maybe you need to simplify; cull some of your commitments.

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) A full-on Scorpio full moon doesn’t throw you Aquarius! You love the energy it brings, so use it to shine a spotlight on projects and domestic issues. You’re also likely to hear some news that makes your ears burn but be discreet with secrets that come your way.

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) This week’s full moon imbues you with a feeling of urgency, but structured modifications are what’s needed at the moment. With Saturn and retrograde Mars in your career zone, it’s not a good time to apply for that promotion or launch a big new business project.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) This week, the full moon revs up your relationship zone, bulls are a sensual bunch in the bedroom, and your lusty libido usually burns on a steady flame. However, sexual satisfaction will be in short supply this week, as sex planet Mars reverses through your intimacy zone.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Mars is now in retrograde until June 29. So review, revise and recalibrate, as you (temporarily) lose your momentum but reconnect with the gentle lamb within. With the full moon stirring up your money zones, make sure your bank balance is in a healthy state.

THE LAST WORD

WISDOM FOR ALL AGES Richard O’Leary takes his kids to a movie and comes away with some profound life lessons.

I

nspiration can come from the most unlikely of places – even a darkened cinema at the Sunshine Plaza. I was watching Kung Fu Panda 3 with my family when the martial arts teacher, a red panda called Shifu, replies to his student Po: “I am not trying to turn you into me, I am turning you into you.” That’s when Po realises he doesn’t really know who he is and embarks on a journey of self-discovery, mass gorging of countless dumplings and regular bouts of animated violence. I loved that message – just be you. Simple really. I guess many people may even say simplistic, and a little too sugary… but this week I’m just going to go with it. I remember when I was growing up I wanted to write like Peter Carey, sing like Dylan, and party like John Belushi. Unfortunately those roles had already been taken and I have tried to

the best of my ability to be myself with varying degrees of success. But it’s always good to be reminded about what we should be doing – it’s so easy to be distracted by what the world says we should be, when all we can ever really be is ourselves. Back to the movies, and the crew at DreamWorks didn’t stop at the meaning of life – Kung Fu Panda 3 also had these words of wisdom on many modern day problems. Worrying about the past and future: “Time is just an illusion, there is only the now.” The age of the internet: “There’s so much wisdom in here, I can’t find anything.” Our obsession with weight loss: “She was the total package, smart, beautiful, tremendous appetite.” Talk is cheap: “Chitty-chitty-chatchat, chat-chat-chat!” Po says, cutting off the antagonist Kai when he starts talking

about what he is going to do, rather than just doing it. The importance of challenging yourself: “If you only do what you can do, you’ll never be better than what you are.” I know, I know, it’s laid on a bit thick, but I liked the thought of my boys getting some of these messages interspersed with the usual battles between the good guys and the bad guys. Whether they walked away with any of these life changing comments, I’ll never know. But I am hopeful. I know they remembered at least one thing from the movie because as we emerged from the cavernous cinema into the early evening dusk, there was a uniformity rarely seen in the O’Leary family when the topic of what to have for dinner came up – “dumplings”. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
