Looking for extra
s we approach Anzac Day, it’s worth remembering the debt we owe to those who have gone before us. Sometimes it’s a little too easy to forget our lives could be very different if it wasn’t for the brave actions of the few to save the many. In World War II, the Germans had won victory after victory until they faced the Australians at Tobruk. Sunshine Coast man Maurice Buck knows more than most how important that battle was to the outcome of the war – after all, he was there. He shares his story in this week’s cover story. Also in this edition, you get to have a quick chat with the woman behind the Coast’s newest literary festival, meet the university icon leaving the USC, travel to the Yarra Valley, and test drive one of Holden’s last Commodores. There’s plenty of fashion, places to go, people to see, and a comprehensive property section including a close look at Maroochydore. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
WOMAN OF HER WORD
Coolum’s Wendy O’Hanlon quit her job as a journalist to follow her creative passions and is bringing the Coast’s newest literary festival to life. FIRST JOB? HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
When I was 15 washing big saucepans at the Cane Tram Café in Howard Street, Nambour. Great incentive to go to uni.
Born and bred. Born at Nambour Hospital and raised on a cane farm on the Maroochy River, Dunethin Rock Road overlooking Mt Ninderry. I was always aware of our region’s Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. I was fascinated by these stories and the artefacts we saw as kids.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I am the founder and director of the brand-new and very exciting inaugural Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival Inc, which will be held in Coolum from September 9 to 11 this year. The annual festival’s main two themes celebrate our Sunshine Coast region’s rich Aboriginal heritage and our acclaimed surfing culture layered over our rich literary and songwriting talent. The festival brings together Australian and international writers (including journalists, environmentalists, photographers, poets, performers and musicians) on a world stage – creating a space for conversation and connection across cultural and geographic divides. We will remain grassroots – that is our niche.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? It is my heartland.
FAVOURITE PLACE? First Bay, Coolum Beach.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? IMAGE: CARLYLOOYAH.COM.AU
The sugar industry back and flourishing again.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Two younger brothers and two sons. My folks, Bill and Beryl, have sadly passed on.
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? ‘Wohdee’ (from my WOH initials) or just ‘Wendo’.
FIRST CAR? A 1971 Ford Escort four-door sedan. I raced it in the ‘Reso Rally’ at my uni in Rockhampton (1979) and was coming first until the engine’s welch plug blew. We came last and won a brick.
FAVOURITE BOOK? To Kill A Mockingbird and The Power of One. Both had equal impact when I read them at different ages.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Phil Jarratt’s From Bali: Heaven and Hell.
FAVOURITE SONG? KD Lang’s Hallelujah.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? My dad had a saying: “The day you stop learning is the day you die”.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day I quit mainstream media (April last year) and focussed on my creative passions – hence the birth of the Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival. In 2011, I attended the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival as a media guest. I returned last year as a fully paid-up person. This Ubud festival, now in its 13th year, started as a healing process after the Bali bombings and is so inspirational. I have unashamedly styled our festival on the Ubud spirit and we are so blessed that the Ubud festival founder Janet DeNeefe will officially open our inaugural annual festival this September.
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Two days, no competition. January 1, 1992 when my first son Billy was born and January 23, 1994 when my second son Jaye was born.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? It was Naples, Italy in 1989. We were on our way to Pompeii but there was (another) train strike. So we baulked at paying triple the taxi fare to get there. I have yet to get back to Italy and see Pompeii. So close, yet so far.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Raising two amazing young men as a sole parent.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? With family and friends – perhaps a barbecue at Coolum’s Tickle Park.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Be more questioning of authority in any form.
TEA OR COFFEE? Latte, one sugar please. Also partial to peppermint tea with honey.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? Go the Cowboys and the Broncos!

NINE MEDALS TO REMEMBER
Wurtulla’s Maurice Buck reflects on his time as one of WWII’s legendary Rats of Tobruk – and says he’d do it all again. Words: Candice Holznagel
“I want to tell you something… I thought I was dead. There were men, dead all around me. I still have that shrapnel in my back”

O
n a warm summer’s day in 1940, only days before Christmas, 21-year-old Maurice Buck boarded the luxurious Queen Mary ocean liner. He opened the door to the familysized room he would share with relative strangers and took it all in – the three beds and water level views. As he stood looking outside the portal he thought about the months that stretched before him, the experiences that lay ahead. Two-and-a-half years later, Buck came home to Australia on that very same ship. But the man who came home was a different one to the young, innocent boy who had embarked on the journey to, what is now known as, the Second World War. Today, at the age of 96, Buck has the same memory recall as that young 21-year-old, and a quick wit to match it. As he sits in his Wurtulla living room, beside his wife Joyce, he embarks on his story of survival. He still has shrapnel embedded near his spine, he tells us. A lasting, physical reminder of the 598 days of active service he spent as an Australian soldier. The emotional reminders are there too, forever locked in his memory, and yet if he had to, Buck would fight for our freedom all over again.

“I want to tell you something,’’ he says before pausing to gather his emotions. “I thought I was dead. There were men, dead all around me. I still have that shrapnel in my back.” This particular battle is one that has gone down in history as an epic battle that played an important role in the allies’ victory – The Siege of Tobruk. Records from the Australian War Memorial state that between April and August 1941, around 14,000 Australian soldiers were besieged in Tobruk by a German-Italian army. The Australian garrison consisted of the 9th Division (20th, 24th, and 26th Brigades), the 18th Brigade of the 7th Division, along with four regiments of British artillery and some Indian troops. These soldiers are now known as the Rats of Tobruk. It was vital for the allies’ defence of Egypt and the Suez Canal to hold the Libyan port town of Tobruk, as this forced the enemy to bring most of their
supplies overland from the port of Tripoli, across 1500 kilometres of desert. Tobruk was subject to repeated ground assaults, constant shelling and bombing and the records show that the total number of Australian casualties from the 9th Division from March to December, 1941 amounted to 832 killed, 2,177 wounded and 941 prisoners. Buck was one of the lucky ones to make it out despite spending three months on the front line as a marksman. “The Germans bombed us,’’ he
“I went in to get my rifle to shoot down the plane. There were 360-plus planes in the sky that day on their way to the front line”
recalls. “I went in to get my rifle to shoot down the plane. There were 360-plus planes in the sky that day on their way to the front line. “The shrapnel in my shoulder… they took some out the day I was wounded, but they wouldn’t take me to hospital. “You could see it… but the boys
wouldn’t pull it out. There was a cave and that was where the doctor was. The doctor pulled it out, there in that cave, then they sent me back to the front line. “After three months on the front line I went into hospital. I was put in a bed next to a staff sergeant who had no right hand. It had been blown off. I wrote a letter for him to his mother.’’ Buck says the conditions in the Libyan desert were treacherous – stifling hot through the day and cold at night. He says the dust filled the men’s noses and lungs and completely covered any bitumen roads. He pauses and takes a moment as the tears flow. “I’ve been a bit upset the last few days thinking about this,’’ he says. “It’s also hard to hear there are only a few Rats left.’’ As Anzac Day approaches, it’s a sad reality that the Second World War veterans face – many of the men and women who served their country are now gone. It makes attending the annual commemorative service all the more important for Buck, who also served in New Guinea upon leaving Tobruk. Thousands will gather at Kings Beach on Monday as the sun rises to honour and remember those Australians who myweeklypreview.com.au

THE YOUNGER GENERATION REFLECT… As the years pass, memories can fade. My Weekly Preview spoke with three students from Pacific Lutheran College to find out how they feel about Anzac Day and discovered that it holds as important a meaning as ever.
JOE HARRYS, YEAR 3 Is Anzac Day important to commemorate and why? Yes, because it represents all the soldiers that died in the war. How do you recognise Anzac Day? Me, my Dad and brothers go to the dawn service and make Anzac biscuits as well. Does Anzac Day have a special significance to your or your family? We wear poppies all day because my Dad’s Dad was in the war. Are students given ample opportunity to show support for Anzac Day? Yes, last year we went to an Anzac service at school and learnt about it in class.

have fought and fallen for our freedom. For those whose gaze falls on Maurice Buck’s ageing face and his suit jacket adorned with nine medals, they will wonder silently about his past. Very few will ever know the pain, terror and camaraderie he shared with the men who stood beside him on the front line. For Buck, he hopes that the tradition of Anzac Day is never lost and, asked if he believes the understanding and recognition will remain in another 101 years, he pauses. “I wouldn’t be game to guess. I hope so. I suppose I’ve got to be proud of what I’ve done. But nobody knows, what this lady has been to me,’’ he adds looking towards Joyce. “When you’re in that front line and you’ve stood still till midnight every night and then up at 4am the next day to take a fighting patrol out. It’s hard.”
JACK CLARK, YEAR 9 Is Anzac Day important to commemorate and why? Anzac Day is one of Australia’s more important national commemorative occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces. How do you recognise Anzac Day? I attend the Anzac Day service and the march. Does Anzac Day have a special significance to your family? I have great grandparents who have fought in both World Wars so it is important to honour them
HOMESITES NOW SELLING FROM $192,500
STEPHANIE KEENAN, YEAR 9 What are your thoughts on Anzac Day? Anzac Day is extremely important to commemorate because it is a day when everyone can come together to remember the past and present service men and women who risked their lives for our freedom and safety. Are students given ample opportunity to show support for Anzac Day? At school we are given many opportunities to recognise and understand Anzac Day. We wear poppies, have a service at school and lots of students also participate in the march. In Year 6 students visit the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
St John’s College students Maggie Primmer, Alanah Melville, Lily Campbell
Fifteen-year-old Maggie Primmer is one teenager who takes the time to honour the men and women like Maurice Buck. While she will never understand what they lived through, she takes pride in commemorating and supporting veterans. “Every year my family goes to the Anzac Day march to show recognition to the soldiers who fought for our country,’’ the St John’s College student says. “During this day my family celebrates what it is to be Australian and in particular we remember my granddad who fought in the war. I believe that the younger generation take this opportunity to show gratitude to show how soldiers gave up their lives for us.” Fellow Year 11 students Lily Campbell and Alanah Melville agree. “I think that students in schools are given plenty of opportunity to pay respects and gain more knowledge about the ANZAC spirit and events that took place during all wars, not just WWI,’’ Campbell says. St John’s campus minister Tracey Langford says education is the key to ensuring the younger generations honour the importance of Anzac Day. She says there has been an increase in the number of students participating in local marches however the connection with Anzacs is declining as the number of veterans decline. “The school has an Anzac Day Liturgy to remember the fallen and honour our service men and women and the sacrifice they have made for our country.”

SHOW AND SHINE The Rotary Club of Alexandra Headland is hosting the annual Surf Show and Shine fundraising event next month, which will showcase kombis and surfboards. All proceeds will be donated to Care Outreach, a local Sunshine Coast charity that supports people living in the outback who are suffering from drought. The event will be held at Mooloolaba State School on May 29 between 9am and 2pm. In addition to memorabilia there will be food stalls and children’s entertainment.
$760,000 PRIZE POOL AT CHARITY RACE DAY The second annual Montrose Charity Raceday is on this Saturday, April 23. Featuring some of Queensland’s most prestigious races, including the 2YO Plate and Mick Dittman Plate, the event has a prize pool of $760,000. Sunshine Coast Turf Club chief executive Mick Sullivan says the club continues to work closely with local charities. “In the past 12 months, a variety of charities have raised in excess of $250,000 through hosting race meetings at the venue,’’ he says. This event will provide funds for Montrose to continue to provide therapy and support services to people with physical disabilities and their families Queensland-wide.
MANAGING STRESS: FREE TALKS
OUT THERE ART
Managing the stresses of everyday life is an important skill to develop, according to international lecturer Peter Heibloem who says stress begins as a psychological experience. Heibloem, who hosts seminars on improving memory and managing stress, is holding a series of free events in Maroochydore. Coast residents are invited to attend one of the free two-hour lectures taking place through April and May. For more information phone 1800 072 999.
Sunshine Coast Council will showcase major prize winning artworks from former Sunshine Coast Art Prize winners in a unique pop-up style gallery at the Audi Centre showroom at Currimundi until June 15. Mayor Mark Jamieson said it is an exciting new council initiative to make the prestigious collection more accessible to the public. This year’s prize has already attracted more than 300 entries from local and national artists and the exhibition will be held at Caloundra Regional Gallery from August 18 to October 2.

Within 20 years, more than three million Australians will be living with diabetes. As one of the fastest growing chronic diseases in Australia, about 280 people are diagnosed every day. People can learn to better manage their diabetes at a free workshop on Wednesday, April 27 at the Maroochy RSL Sub-branch. The Type 2 Diabetes and Me workshop is being hosted by the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service for people who are newly diagnosed, need a refresher or have been told by their GP they have pre-diabetes. HOLDEN SCRAMBLE STAYS The Holden Scramble Championship Final will continue to call the Sunshine Coast home after council extended its relationship with the PGA of Australia as the major destination partner of the pro-amateur teams’ event. PGA chief executive Brian Thorburn said he’s thrilled with the arrangement. The new agreement means the Holden Scramble Championship will remain at Twin Waters Golf Club for a further three years. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the council was pleased to continue its lengthy association with the PGA through its sponsorship of the Holden Scramble, which goes back to 1995.
‘UNLEASHING THE GENIUS’ OF OUR YOUTH Generation Innovation, which focuses on nurturing young Coast residents and creating entrepreneurs, kicked off its 2016 GI Challenge earlier this month. Almost 40 participants aged between 15 and 25 gathered for the workshop, which resulted in the formation of 13 new business ideas. Generation Innovation founder Ted O’Brien said teams were allocated a mentor to help them brainstorm ideas. “It’s all about unleashing the genius of young people.’’

The Queensland Government has announced that it will provide the Sunshine Coast with a jobcreation springboard by making an extra 660 training places available to the region’s job seekers. Training and Skills Minister Yvette D’Ath visited the region last week to outline the Rescuing TAFE funding package and host a special forum on the future use of Queensland’s training assets at the TAFE Queensland Mooloolaba campus. D’Ath said the $22.8 million Rescuing TAFE funding boost over the next three years will support more than 2400 subsidised training places throughout Queensland across a range of industry areas.
TECHY TALK Eight student teams from schools across the Sunshine Coast had their powers of innovation put to the test last week, as some of the region’s sharpest minds with technology startup business experience ran the rule over the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards competition entries. It was the first of four mentoring sessions student finalists will undertake over the coming weeks to refine their ideas before final judging and awards presentations on May 18.
ANDREW WALLACE NEW LNP CANDIDATE Sunshine Coast barrister Andrew Wallace was this week announced as the LNP candidate to replace Mal Brough in the seat of Fisher. The announcement follows the resignation of Brough in February who, at the time, said he would not re-contest the seat at this year’s federal election after controversy surrounding an Australian Federal Police investigation into former MP IMAGE: COURTESY OF BRUCE ATKINSON ABC Peter Slipper. Wallace was one of six vying for pre-selection. He previously ran against Brough four years ago but was not successful at that time.

After announcing his retirement as Pro-Vice Chancellor, Mike Hefferan reflects on the important role the University of the Sunshine Coast is playing in shaping our region for the future. Words: Leigh Robshaw
M
ike Hefferan joined the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2007 and as Professor of Property and Development and Pro-Vice Chancellor, he has played a major part in shaping the university into what it is today. But after 40 years of working 60-hour weeks in both government and education, he’s looking forward to working less, sailing more and doing some pro-bono work for the retirement community on the Coast, as well as keeping his foot in at the university as chair of the Innovation Centre. In his nine years at USC, Hefferan has seen it grow from a fledgling university to a forward-thinking institution playing a central role in the future development of the Sunshine Coast. Originally from Stanthorpe, Hefferan was educated in Brisbane and became a licensed property valuer, before moving into state government to work on major projects. It was at this time that Emeritus Professor Paul Thomas, chair of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board, was trying to get USC off the ground. “I was in government at the time and we saw what these people were doing here and thought, these guys are either very brave or a bit stupid. They took big risks to get the thing up. The university is 20 years old this year and for 12 years it was just getting the buildings up and
courses started and some action happening, and they were really struggling. Hefferan says the university benefitted from a different government climate to that of today. “USC was really lucky at that stage, it was just at the time where it was kicking off and the governments actually had money to throw at the universities, which

they don’t have anymore. There was a real interest in advancing tertiary education at a federal and state level.â€? With the University of Queensland and the Queensland University of Technology only an hour and a half away, USC needed to find its niche quickly, or risk being marginalised. Then along came the new hospital at Kawana. “The hospital is probably the biggest thing to happen to us since the university started,â€? Hefferan says. “Other regional universities would kill to have that turn up on your doorstep. For us to get that hospital, with all the placements in all the medical science professions, is just a great opportunity. “It’s one of the big things that’s going to mould our university into the future. People haven’t realised it yet because all they see is a huge construction project. When that thing gets going, there will be much wider impact on jobs, education, research, housing‌â€? After leaving government, Hefferan spent five years working at QUT before he joined USC and says, “I firmly believe that this university is more important to this region than even QUT is to Brisbane, because this place is still growing and you don’t have to look too far to see the graces in knowledge, education, health – you’ve got to have the seed stock. You’ve got to have the people, the professional development and skills and the research.â€?

With his family home at Buderim, Hefferan has strong ideas on what the Coast needs to prosper. He supports the airport expansion and says we need better rail services to Brisbane and a change of thinking about development and jobs. “One of the reasons I’m on the Sunshine Coast is in a lot of other areas, you’re working with things that have already been stuffed up and you have to reverse out of that. The great thing about this place is it hasn’t been stuffed up. I firmly believe most of the growth in Australia is in the peri-urban areas. I know they try in the cities, but they are never going to get that much better because they’re so congested. “The wonderful thing and most unusual thing about the Sunshine Coast is we’ve got at least three huge greenfield developments – Aura, Kawana and SunCentral, and also high pockets of the old cane lands that aren’t being used for anything. “In other regions where everything is built out already, if you’re going to make major densification changes, get ready for a fight. You’ve got these big areas here where there’s no neighbourhood, no existing community interest. That gives you an unbelievable opportunity.” But for change to happen, Hefferan
says the Sunshine Coast needs to be more open-minded about the possibilities. “You have the mindset of people who get here and say this is wonderful so please go away, world. The world just doesn’t work like that and economics don’t work like that. If you’re not going forward, you’re going backwards and that’s a fact. This frozen-in-time mentality is really dangerous stuff. You’re not going to change mindsets quickly. “The other thing to do is to work on other ways to have sustainable development and really good urban design without everyone sitting in a little house 20 kilometres from anywhere.” Hefferan reckons we also need to get real about our population heading to Brisbane for work. We don’t need to stop the drain to the city, we need to facilitate it with better public transport links. “The fact is, Brisbane is always going to create more jobs than we’ve got. You can’t put people into cars because it’s inefficient. You can have a ten-lane highway to Caboolture and it’s still going to jam up. If you live in Gosford or Geelong, 30,000 people a day get on a safe train with their paper and within an hour they’re right in the middle of the city. What planet are we on that we can’t visualise that?”

TRAVEL
GET HIGH IN THE YARRA Take a hot air balloon ride over the Yarra Valley – then sample the merchandise. By Luke Costin
I
A sunrise hot air balloon flight over the Yarra Valley
t is like a scene from a dream. Nothing but a golden sun and a fluffy blanket of cloud in my sight. I can barely resist the urge to leap out of my hot-air balloon basket and dive among the cushions around me. Ballooning delivers some surreal moments and my brief peek above the morning fog above the Yarra Valley has been particularly hair-raising. And not for the reason I expected. Wind, it turns out, has little effect on those travelling with it, making many thick clothes unnecessary at altitude. It’s one of a few instances where my quick pre-flight assumptions about ballooning are pleasantly ruled out once we are in the air. Another poor assumption is there is no fun in cruising at a slower speed. Sure, catching glimpses of landmarks are possible from the window seat of a plane. But those fleeting flashes cannot compare to the gentle meandering over farmland, tidy rows of grapevines, and the Yarra Valley’s wandering rivers and creeks. The third wrong assumption is that ballooning in the Yarra Valley would be anything but first-class.

Kiff Saunders, the one-time lumberjack piloting my balloon, has been at the burners of balloons all across the world for the past 30 years. In the past 12 months, he’s flown in Brazil, Ireland and, after tethering a balloon to a Russian icebreaker, at the North Pole. But, despite the calls for him to remain overseas, Saunders has kept his base in Melbourne and played a part in the Yarra Valley’s revival. The state’s first wine region failed to see out the Great Depression but the industry was resurrected in the late 1960s by a few curious winemakers. Once Moet et Chandon, De Bortoli and McWilliams came knocking in the 1980s, the region quickly expanded and is now home to more than 80 labels. One of those to set foot in the area was Bendigo winery Balgownie Estate in 2002. Set on 12 hectares of
undulating terrain outside Yarra Glen, the label’s Yarra Valley site has quickly built a satisfying list of locallyproduced wines. Its pinot noir has made the leap to the winery’s premier Estate label for the first time in 2013, a cause for celebration for the Valley vineyard. “It may not be a big deal for everyone but we’re really proud,” says sales manager Melanie Watson. Balgownie Estate sets itself apart from other boutique wineries with its seamlessly-integrated first-class resort. A minute on the property is enough to see how it snapped up the award for Victoria’s best regional accommodation by Tourism Accommodation Australia last year. An indoor pool and gym can help do away the guilt of consuming a few too many wines, while those looking for relaxation sans alcohol can step inside the day spa
and health club for a soothing massage. As for food with views, few guests turn down the opportunity to watch the sun set over the vineyards as they dine at the onsite restaurant. But the most valuable player on the Balgownie team is the courtesy driver, Mark. Worry about who should be designated driver ends with Mark who makes visiting several cellar doors and the tantilising Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery in all in a single a day more than possible. To some, that’s the dream. *The writer was a guest of Balgownie Estate, a Choice Hotels member, and Global Ballooning.
THINGS TO DO • The Healesville Hotel’s raspberries, milk sorbet, shortbread and chocolate mousse dessert. The euphoriainducing treat is well worth its $14 price tag. • Meeting vets and nurses, as they treat sick, injured or orphaned wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary, a zoo specialising in native animals. • A chance to sample all the local produce in one place. A farmers’ market runs on the third Sunday of each month from the historic barn at Yering Station. • Viewing Yarra Valley from above. Half a dozen ballooning companies operate from the Valley with Global Ballooning leading the pack, having flown 110,000 passengers in 25 years.

MY OPINION
HELP A SISTER OUT
DYING IN DETENTION
Sami Muirhead wants the women of the Coast to join her in becoming a Shero.
Richard Bruinsma asks, who is to blame for the suicide of asylum seekers in detention?
W
ill you join me and be a Shero –a female hero? It will cost you the same amount of money as a takeaway coffee or two. A great local group called Share The Dignity is asking us to donate tampons and pads to Sunshine Coast women who often have to choose between eating and buying sanitary items. I know this is an unsavoury topic for many blokes, but getting your period is a part of life for women. Clare Bates-Pay works with Share The Dignity. “Most of us live in a bubble and don’t realise so many women simply go without sanitary items every month. Many of the women we try to help are couch surfing at friend’s houses or are homeless. If you are a mum who is disadvantaged, then often there is a tiny bit of help for the kids or a gift at Christmas for the children, but it is the mothers who are forgotten. No woman should have to suffer the indignity of choosing between feeding her children, feeding herself and buying pads or tampons,” says Clare. “It is not fair that some people think it is a privilege to have tampons, as every Coast woman should have them and especially these women who have just been through horrific situations and have sometimes been physically abused.” There are hundreds of homeless
women on the Sunshine Coast. Possibly thousands. Danielle, who now lives in Caloundra, was one of them. The plucky mum has a four-year-old boy and has turned her life around after hitting rock bottom when she fled her marriage after she found out her ex-husband was molesting her boy. Share The Dignity helped Danielle in many ways when she was homeless. “People showing you kindness means you feel love. Something as simple as tampons show you that someone out there actually cares about you. There are a lot of women who need help on the Coast and it feels as if not many people are helping them.” “Some women I know who do not have a home to go to spend time at a shelter at Nambour but others just go to parks at night time.” So you can help in two ways. Firstly, throw a packet of tampons or pads in your trolley the next time you do the family shop and please take them to any of the collection bins across the Coast. You will find the bins at all Terry White chemists as well as at Fernwood Gym. Secondly, there is an afternoon tea being held at The Lakehouse at Mountain Creek in a few weeks. Bring some girlfriends along and let’s have some fun and raise some money. There are more details at sharethedignity.com.au. Thanks for being a Shero.

S
hould those in charge of sending asylum seekers to detention centres be charged with murder – or at least manslaughter – if a detainee commits suicide? This question touches on an interesting provision in the Queensland Criminal Code that someone can be liable if their “threats or intimidation of any kind” trigger behaviours in someone that leads to their unfortunate death. The Gable Tostee case, which returns to court this year, in which a young woman fell to her death after being locked outside on a balcony on the Gold Coast, ponders this legal provision. With regard to asylum seekers, it’s been documented that detainees endure mental suffering as a result of being held in the detention centres. The isolation, boredom, fear and uncertainty of the future all contribute to mental pressures. It’s been reported that the emotional burden is so great that some detainees see no alternative than to take their own life. With that in mind, can we argue that the suicide of an asylum seeker is a foreseeable consequence of their being detained? Is it then fair to say that those who place an asylum seeker into detention are knowingly sending them into an
environment that could trigger behaviour that leads to their death? Can the act of sending an asylum seeker to a detention centre be classed as ‘threatening’ or ‘intimidation’ as posed by the Criminal Code? Can the impact of jails or some Centrelink decisions also qualify under this provision? I believe the Code doesn’t mitigate legal responsibility in these unconventional cases if the victim is unusually susceptible to mental illness, whether they have a pre-existing
“…some detainees see no alternative than to take their own life” contributing condition, or whether they took “precautions” (sought medical help) prior to their death. I am a supporter of migration that is controlled, as opposed to the chaotic situation that arises with ‘boat people’. But the detention situation, which is designed in part as a deterrent to other would-be arrivals, is not working well and, for some, is proving tragically fatal. Are those in charge of detention morally responsible beyond the simple ‘storage of humans’?

Glamour revival Queen of burlesque Dita Von Teese is set to tour Australia in June with Burlesque: Strip Strip Hooray! Known for her classic pin-up style, she has this message for women: “Strive for glamour! Glamour is enchantment, wonder. It is standing out from the crowd by way of flourish, manners and charm. Glamour is a thing of beauty—but it’s not about being born beautiful. Glamour doesn’t belong to those naturally stunning, or to the rich, or young. Hollywood has no monopoly on glamour. Glamour is the creation of beauty and allure, and anyone can create it.” Dita’s top 5 beauty tips: 1. Use extra virgin coconut oil as a nourishing and non-toxic makeup remover and shaving cream. 2. Use lip liner one shade darker than your lipstick to add depth and richness and help maintain your lip colour. 3. Use two different types of mascara – one for strengthening and one for thickening. 4. Use a conditioning hair mask twice a week, put on a shower cap and blast it with your hairdryer. Heat opens up the cuticle and allows the formula to hydrate the hair shaft. 5. To tame flyaways, spritz hairspray onto a powder brush you reserve for this purpose and run it across any stray hairs on the top and sides of your head.

MY LIFE
HEARING LOSS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
CHANGING YOUR BODY IMAGE Jodi Chapman says while a poor body image can be genetic, your hormones can also play a part in how you feel about yourself.
H
ow is it that one person can be happy and accepting of their appearance, while another agonises over every lump, bump, and dimple? It’s easy to blame outside sources such as critical comments, or negative media influences, though who’s to say the negativity is not coming from within? What makes one child happy and full of life, while another feels dejected and lacking in joy? Studies show that those who manufacture high levels of hormones have more energy, are happier, and have a positive outlook compared to those who produce lower levels, displaying negativity, and self-criticism. There are genetic influences and some suggest your level of happiness depends on the personality you were born with. So perhaps it’s simply nature rather than nurture?
However, our bodies are manufacturing machines and may be encouraged to increase production of hormones through good diet and a healthy digestive system. Negative thoughts are the first sign that there may be a problem, though they’re not always able to be controlled by simply choosing to be happy. Understanding you have the control to optimise the way in which your body and mind function biochemically, gives you back the power to change it. There’s nothing more beautiful than a healthy body and a brilliant smile. Choosing a healthy lifestyle automatically builds more happy hormones, bringing you one step closer to loving who you are.

recently copped an enormous smackdown from my wife for being anti orchestras. Seriously, I’m very wary of these musical cults and simply put, I just don’t want my kids exposed to so much sax and violins. On that note, it’s time to confess to you that I’m a deadset punaholic. I’m a bandit for the pun. Who the hell doesn’t love a bit of pundamonium? Admittedly, it’s quite difficult to explain puns to kleptomaniacs because they always take things literally. Everywhere you look, there’s a puntastic moment just waiting to happen, even take away shops use awesome puns. The late night lamb sandwich shop in Tewantin was called Kebabylon. There’s a healthy wraps bar called Pita Pan. The Codfather is a cracking fish and chip shop Then there’s the removalist for hire, Jean Claude van Man. Sure, sometimes puns verge on dad jokes, but a truly clever pun can change the colour of your day. For your enjoyment, I’ve compiled a list of my absolute favourite puns.

I recently got fired from the calendar factory. All I did was take a day off. Having sex in a lift is just wrong, on so many levels. Two crows were arrested and charged with attempted murder. I was once attacked by a pack of Cubans – I’ve got the cigars to prove it. I think becoming a vegetarian is a huge missed steak. I hate tacos, said no Juan ever. Batman has a pantry full of jasmine and basmati. It’s the Dark Knight Rices. I simply don’t trust stairs, they’re always up to something. And now for the most punderful pun of all time… “What? You need an ark? I Noah guy”. It’s a long weekend, so you may need some beer themed puns. How does a Jewish bloke make beer? Hebrews it. Beer is the cure for all your ALEments. “To beer or not to beer, that is the question”. I love Shakesbeer, don’t you? This week we’re taking a slight detour through the world of brewing and stopping for a quiet refreshing one in the Adelaide Hills to sample some top quality pear cider. The Hills cider company has won more awards than Taylor Swift’s had boyfriends, so it’s no wonder they’re happier than a Frenchman who accidently invented a pair of self-removing trousers. Over the last five years, they’ve picked up a swag of gongs for their 100 per cent fresh, gluten free, no BS, handcrafted ciders. Supporting local Aussie farmers is
the Hills Cider Company’s thing and along the way their support local vibe has caught on. I normally swerve pear cider like Adam Sandler swerves quality movies, but this award-winning pear cider is pretty damn good, with a clean and natural spicy taste and a quality dry finish that although it’s a little sweet for me, plenty of my wife’s mates love it. At 5% AV and no hidden nasties it’s excellent drop for a hot and humid arvy here on the Coast. I give the Hills Cider Company’s Pear Cider an exCIDERble, (as if there wasn’t one last pun) three out of five thumbs up. BUSINESS AND FINANCE
BBQS, BANKS AND BUDGETS. Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he following high-level, no-nonsense review of recent data should bring you up to speed with global financial matters and ensure you standout at the next barbecue. US Economy - The outcome of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting in March was unexpectedly and unambiguously dovish. Janet Yellen, the Federal Reserve chairwoman, was cautious regarding global growth and wary of a stronger $US while other global central banks continue to loosen monetary policy. Expectations for the future federal funds rate were revised downwards, implying only two rate rises this year. This would move the US rate to a range of 0.75–1 per cent. China – Chinese Premier Li Keqiang
delivered the government work report at the National People’s Congress. The 2016 growth target was lowered to a range of 6.5 – 7 per cent (compared with 7 per cent in 2015 and 7.5 per cent in 2012– 15). The government work report also announced a list of major economic targets for 2016 and that the fiscal budget deficit target is set at 2.18 trillion yuan (3 per cent of GDP), i.e.) the government will spend more than it collects in tax revenue. We suspect this is to assist the well-telegraphed move to a more services-based economy. China’s February trade report showed exports declining 25.4 per cent on a year ago, while imports fell 13.8 per cent over the same period. Both these results illustrate a fragile global economy and the reason why central banks remain accommodative. Europe – The European Central Bank (ECB) tilted the balance sheet towards expansion this month. On rates, the ECB cut the refinance rate by five basis points to zero and the deposit rate by 10 basis points to negative 0.4 per cent. On
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced the Federal Budget will be brought forward by one week and released on May 3.
Australia - The Reserve Bank of Australia left the cash rate steady at 2 per cent in April. The governor opted for few changes in the statement announcing the decision, despite the softer run of data in the back half of February. The Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, announced that the Federal Budget will be brought forward one week to May 3, signalling the prospect of a double dissolution election in early July. Get ready to make your way to the polling booth again. So, at this time central bank policy – other than in Australia – remains accommodative, with an eye on improving demand through the global economy.
quantitative easing, the ECB increased the pace of asset purchases by 20 billion Euros to 80 billion Euros per month and expanded the eligible purchase universe of the program to include non-bank corporate bonds. These are significant steps towards generating demand in the euro zone.

FINAL FAREWELL Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the HOLDEN COMMODORE VE2 SS
T
hey don’t make ‘em like they used to. How often have you heard that old lament? But in this case, it’s absolutely true. Holden’s Commodore SS might be one of the oldest and most iconic nameplates in the Aussie automotive industry – one that sadly will disappear
when Holden stops local manufacturing some time next year. But in the model’s rich history, they never made ‘em like this. They certainly never made them with the levels of technology and innovation in this latest, and final version of the SS – the VF Series 2 – with buttons that will get the car to start itself, park itself and
even make itself sound more pleasing. They didn’t make them with as much power, as much safety equipment or as many luxury inclusions. Things like active cruise control and forward collision alert, or a head-up display that beams your speed, and the regulated speed for that road, onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of vision.
They didn’t used to make ‘em with lane departure warning or blind spot alerts built into the wing mirrors either; or a smart key that allows push-button start – and even a remote start so you can warm up or cool down the cockpit before you get into the car. Not to mention a push-button system for the car to park itself into tight spots. They didn’t include a satellite navigation system with live traffic updates; or a touch-screen multi-media system with embedded music apps like Pandora and Stitcher SmartRadio; or reversing camera plus front and rear parking sensors. In fact, no Commodore we’ve ever driven has felt as smart and sophisticated as this one. Okay, some things haven’t changed much. The SS has always been built around the appeal of a thumping V8 engine and that remains true of this latest, greatest iteration. But that V8 is even bigger than before – now 6.3 litres in capacity. Pumping out a gargantuan 304 kilowatts, plus 570Nm of torque in standard form, it’s the most powerful engine ever to power this model. If this is to be the last car ever to wear continued over>

MOTORING
<from previous page the Commodore badge, it’s certainly going out on a high. We drove the SS-V – the luxuryoriented variant of the tried and tested SS with a tempting $47,990 price tag. With inclusions like those listed above, it represents good buying. Whereas big Aussie sedans traditionally lagged behind their European counterparts in terms of build quality and finish, this final update of the legendary Commodore delivers on every score. The stylish SS cockpit matches anything you’d expect from a luxury European brand – sculpted leather seats, brushed alloy finishes and classy suede leather inlays on the dash and door trims, embroidered with that famous SS logo. The classy and functional touchscreen setup controls virtually every interior function of the Commodore, plus one feature that will thrill SS devotees even more – a button that activates the car’s bi-model exhaust system, specifically tuned to produce the sweetest engine note ever. So detailed was Holden’s design of this last-ever SS that they even invented a device – called the Baillie tip in memory of the late
Holden engineer who devised it – that increases exhaust sound by up to 10 percent. The result is a big V8 that sounds every bit as good as it drives. And that’s seriously impressive. But it’s not all sound and fury. The SS drivetrain is wonderfully smooth and linear in its acceleration and remarkably refined in everyday operation. It’s flexible and forgiving around town – all that torque allows it to chug along in heavy traffic without complaint – and the six-speed manual model we tested was slick and tight – albeit it with a slightly sudden clutch release. Still, a comfortable workaday conveyance.
It’s only when the revs spin to the higher end of the scale does that epic soundtrack start to cut in. Holden doesn’t supply acceleration statistics – but they claim it’s the quickest Commodore ever. No argument there. For those wanting even more performance, there’s the enhanced SS Redline version that adds a launch control function, highperformance Brembo brakes, paddleshifters for automatic models plus sharper suspension and a sunroof, just for good measure. Outside, this farewell edition Commodore has toned back some of the excesses the SS was known for. It looks sporty, no doubt, with handsome big alloys, front air dam and body skirts. But the spoiler on the boot lid is subtle, almost restrained, and the styling leans to a more sophisticated, classy look. Perhaps for the first time, it’s a Commodore we really didn’t want to give back at the end of our test drive. Yep, they certainly don’t make ‘em like they used to. And sadly, pretty soon they won’t be making ‘em at all.
HOLDEN COMMODORE VE2 SS HOW BIG? It’s the last of the big Aussie sedans – and it delivers the space accordingly. We’ve almost forgotten how much room there is in the big Holden, front, back and in the boot. HOW FAST? Seriously – although we don’t have an official figure it’s safe to say it will hit the speed limit in well under 5 seconds. It feels substantially quicker than previous models and comparable to some of the European sports variants. HOW THIRSTY? Well, 6.3 litres of Aussie V8 does develop quite a thirst. With the sixspeed manual transmission of our test model, average consumption is 12.6L/100km – which is not great. HOW MUCH? The upmarket SS-V, with countless electronic aides and cute little features like self-parking and remote starting, can still be had for less than $50-grand. European cars with matching performance and features are almost three times that much.

MAROOCHYDORE IN THE MIDDLE Ready to jump into the property market? My Weekly Preview shares a snapshot on one of the Coast’s major residential and commercial precincts. WORDS: Dorothy Whittington

marked the start of a new era as locals no longer had to make shopping expeditions to the northern suburbs of Brisbane. Increasingly, government services (including the district court and police headquarters) and businesses moved in and land was opened up in every direction - including up. The area is currently the focus of one
of the region’s largest developments to date with the first sod turned earlier this year making way for the future Maroochydore City Centre. The former Horton Park Golf Course is being developed into the country’s first greenfield CBD. It will be a mix of retail, commercial and residential development and include dining, hotel, entertainment and convention centre.
With the Maroochy River its border in the north, Eudlo Creek in the west, the Sunshine Motorway and Oogar Street off Sugar Road in the south and the ocean in the west, Maroochydore has a land area of 1260 well-used hectares with a population density of 12.31 people per hectare at the 2006 census. It’s a number that’s sure to grow in coming years. Summing up: The capital of the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore has it all, a complete mix of residential opportunities from high-rise apartments to suburban homes, some industrial areas and extensive commercial and retail development with tourism thrown in for good measure.
SNAPSHOT According to the REIQ Market Monitor December Quarter Report, 32 houses were sold in Maroochydore for that period of time, compared to 90 units. The annual median sale price for the suburb is $510,000 for houses and $360,000 for units/townhouses.

aroochydore has found itself centre stage. Earmarked around 20 years ago as a key regional centre it has become the CBD of the Sunshine Coast in a fairytale rise to civic prominence. The ascent really got underway in 1973 when Maroochy Sands on the corner of Sixth Avenue and Aerodrome Road became the region’s first high-rise building. Less than 30 years before that, planes were still occasionally landing on the flat, sandy strip that gave the name to the road. Development was steady during the 1970s, as Maroochydore started its transition from old beach town to serious commercial centre, and then it all took off after the opening of The Sands shopping centre in September 1980. Butts shopping centre was converted into the Big Top while the Sands provided the foundations (K-Mart is still the original tenant) for the Sunshine Plaza, the region’s major shopping mall. Its opening in 1994

SURF REPORT
Well Julian got some much needed points last week at Margaret River. He is now firmly in top 10 as they head off to Brazil. If you remember last year they were surfing near a sewerage outlet. Kinda crap conditions! The good news is there is a mixed bag of surfers at the top. Yay ! Wilko is still top of the board. Was hoping Mr Slater would shine. I think when it gets serious in Fiji and Tahiti he will step up. Now this weekend will produce a jump in swell so will be hilarious to watch the surf boats down at Alex. Those guys have some bad accidents so grab a beer and enjoy the show. Head to Noosa Bar if you have time.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Silver bream, whiting and flathead are upstream of the Bli Bli Bridge on a variety of baits including worms, yabbies and prawns, with best results on the ebb tide. Flathead and grunter are in the cod hole area using live baits on the night rising tide. Mud crabs are making a run in the deeper channels with better quality at night. SURF: You can find sea bream off the rocks at Pincushion using small pillies with tailor working just on dark. Maroochy Beach is the best for oversize whiting and dart in the low tide gutters, but beach walkers will keep them out wide, so fish early. OFFSHORE: The Inner Gneerings is best for calamari with early mornings ideal, and a pilchard berley trail is a necessity. There are sweetlip and sharks around The Blinker with right on dusk the go. They just love fish fillets and pillies. Water temp is still 25 degrees. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam anglers have been taking golden perch and bass on floated shrimps and slow trolled deep divers. Quality fish are also being taken from both Bjelke Peterson and Boondooma Dams where water levels are stable at present.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] With your patron planet Mars in retrograde mode, projects are moving at a snail’s pace but don’t let it get you down. If you turn your attention to your aspirations for the future and plan with precision, then you’ll feel less restless and impatient.
TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Are you making the most of the Sun and Mercury moving through your sign? Monday through to Wednesday is the time to be bold and brainy, as you draw inspiration from fellow Taurean, Eva Peron: “I am smart and have more strength than I appear to have.”
GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You’re keen to power ahead at lightning speed, but this week’s stars advise you to slow down and prepare thoroughly. Then you’ll avoid doing impulsive things that you later regret. Plus, expect disruptions and delays involving cars, computers or phones.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] The week starts well as Venus enhances enjoyment obtained from friendships and group activities. Make the most of it because a cherished dream will be temporarily put on hold when Mercury reverses through your hopes and wishes zone.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] With the Sun in your career zone, step up to the professional plate and showcase your substantial talents. But with Mercury in retrograde mode make sure you double-check all information, otherwise missed opportunities are likely.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Mercury reverses through your travel zone so expect mix-ups and mayhem involving cars, buses, trains, planes and/or holiday plans. You can still have a good time … as long as you leave your Virgo predilection for punctuality (and perfection) at home.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] With Mars retrograding through your social media zone, it’s not a suitable time to launch an online business, or try to sort out a personal problem via Facebook. Especially from Thursday onwards, when Mercury starts reversing through your intimacy zone.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Expect some communication chaos over the next three weeks, as Mercury reverses through your relationship zone. It’s also a time when unresolved issues from the past may be dredged up. If you are attached, Venus enhances romantic vibes on the weekend.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Last week, Mars started reversing through your sign. This Thursday, Mercury starts reversing through your daily routine zone, so day-to-day life will be very frustrating over the next three weeks. Employ the one virtue that is most elusive for you … patience!
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Self-sabotage is a danger, as retrograde Mars mutes your motivation and Saturn stimulates your tendency to focus on personal faults. So use the planetary influences to meditate, plus boost your self-esteem via a healthy dose of positive self-talk.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With conversation planet Mercury reversing through your home zone expect some domestic dramas over the following three weeks. You’ll find the more impatient, impulsive and contrary you are, the more challenging the problems will be.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Your professional life is bursting at the seams. So much to do, so little time! With serious Saturn and retrograde Mars in your work zone, you need to plan, prioritise and delegate. And don’t try to re-invent the wheel. Instead, follow in the footsteps of successful predecessors.

THE LAST WORD
P-PLATER PARENTING Richard O’Leary says parenting is one of those jobs you can never be fully prepared for.
I
was driving the boys down to Brissie to the science centre at the Queensland Museum during the school holidays, when after yet another P-plater passed us, my youngest son asked if you need a licence to be a parent. Good question, I thought. I remember when my wife and I came home from the hospital with our first son and looked at each other with stares that said, “what do we do now?” More than seven years have passed since then, but I often feel like I still have my P-plates on – and recently, the challenges have been coming thick and fast. Like the morning my son told me he’d decided to become a vegan the minute before I started making his school lunch. He ended up with a lot of crackers. Or the day when my youngest asked what the word ‘bloody’ means
– because Pappy says it a lot. Not to mention the evening I was trying to encourage my eldest son to have another couple of bites of his dinner because “we O’Leary blokes are all naturally thin, which means if we don’t eat we waste away to nothing really quick”. Only for my youngest son to chime in with, “Dad, you’re not that thin” – cue mid-life crisis. Nothing really prepares you for parenthood – who knew that when my wife and I bought those traditional drums from Sabah on a romantic holiday all those years ago before we had children – that less than a decade later, they would be used by our two sons to wake us up at five in the morning? But some jobs are like that aren’t they? You have to do them to find out whether or not you are up to the task. I was listening to American political commentator Dan Carlin
recently and he was talking about how there is nothing that prepares you properly to become the president of the United States – no qualification or work experience can possibly get you sufficiently ready. Perhaps. But I’d be willing to bet if Barack Obama was asked what job was tougher – being the leader of the free world or raising a couple of daughters – that his famous eloquence would be tested to the limits and he may even stumble for a second or two. And I doubt very much that when he and Michelle talk about any parenting challenges thrown their way, that they ever use his presidential slogan of ‘Yes We Can’. I suspect it may be something closer to ‘Yes, We Might. Maybe.’
