have two special mothers in my life: my mum, and my wife who is a great mum to our kids. So I’m extra proud of our cover story this week, which pays tribute to a couple of local mums who are simply inspiring. It’s a great reminder of how most mothers go above and beyond every day – and I wish you all a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday. Also this week, you can come face to face with a croc, meet a local photographer who followed his passion to business success and critical acclaim, and get some parenting advice from our beer expert Todd Widdicombe – it’s up to you whether you want to follow it or not. We also have all the usual suspects: the opinion makers, the trendsetters, the advice givers and the real estate experts – including some tips for those looking to buy an investment property. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
LEADING LIGHT
Hinterland landscape photographer Ben Messina took a risk in leaving commercial photography — and then everything clicked. FIRST JOB?
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
Packing boxes in a duty free store in Cairns, while moonlighting as a photographic assistant, and also working in a wholesale Kodak photographic lab.
When I made the decision to stop doing paid commercial photographic work and instead open my first gallery. It brought back my love of photography as an artform. It also taught me a lot about business. If you want to be an artist you also need to have good business skills.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’m currently creating a series of landscape images for Pentax Australia to be used for the release of their new K1 flagship professional full frame camera.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
Myself, my amazing wife Jo, and our two-and-a-half-yearold son Harrison.
When on a photographic road trip, tired, unshaven and the magic light happens… click and I’ve got the image I’ve been chasing. For a landscape photographer, great light is everything. When I get that amazing glimpse of light even for a few seconds it makes my day.
FIRST CAR? A red Hyundai Excel.
FAVOURITE BOOK?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
Ansel Adams in Color. While mainly known for his amazing black and white landscapes, his colour work is phenomenal when you consider how long ago the images were created.
Bad light. I’ve been on month-long photographic road trips where I’ve totally misjudged the weather and had to deal with dull grey overcast skies for over a week. There’s nothing worse than going to these amazing places and knowing I’m only seeing 99 per cent of it’s beauty. It’s that extra one per cent that makes an image something special.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Simply Peter Dombrovskis. I absolutely love his work. The thing I respect most about his images is that they are timeless, no fancy tricks, just great images that look as if they could have been captured yesterday.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS?
FAVOURITE SONG? Jimmy Hendrix, Little Wing.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Only show the world the work that you’re 100 per cent proud of and happy to hang on your own wall. I’ve stuck with this advice throughout my career, and it keeps me working harder and harder to better myself.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Two and a half years.
FAVOURITE PLACE? Maleny/Montville area.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Maleny/Montville for food and art, and Noosa National Park for its amazing coastal beauty.
Patience. I keep shooting until the good light comes, even if it takes hours.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF?
I originally moved my gallery from Cairns to Adelaide Street in Brisbane city, which was a bit fast paced and creatively lacking for me. After a few years we started looking for a place where the gallery would thrive as well as having inspiring landscapes for me to capture, and Maleny and the Sunshine Coast seemed like the perfect place. Being able to have my choice of amazing landscapes on the hinterland or the coast within close proximity is a dream come true. It’s also a fantastic place to raise our son.
Don’t ever do anything you’re not 100 per cent about. In work and in life. In the early part of my career as a photographer I captured images for all sorts of different commercial projects, it was great training on how to run a business and also great for paying the bills. In the end though it wasn’t what I loved doing, so in 2004 I wound it all down to pursue my career in landscape photography and haven’t looked back.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Definitely coffee, short black with one sugar.
Our wedding day, and also when my son Harrison was born. Different days but equally amazing.
TEA OR COFFEE? NRL OR AFL? AFL – Brisbane Lions.

MOTHER MAGIC
Two inspirational Sunshine Coast mums are rising above life’s challenges to create lasting legacies for their children. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“How do you explain to a child what terminal means? How can I help my son to process the fear of losing me?”
Donna and Kai Image: Catie Wyer
I
’m just going to say it – being a mother can be hard work. Since becoming a mum two years ago I am constantly tired. I’ve bid goodbye to any ounce of privacy I may have previously had and I am known to suffer from terrible mother’s guilt: Does he eat enough vegetables? Did we choose the right kindergarten? Should I be working less and at home more? It can be exhausting and yet, I wouldn’t change a single thing. Becoming a mother – being gifted with a precious child – is the greatest thing on earth. None of the other stuff really matters. Being a mother is a responsibility to be treated with the greatest care and respect. It is a treasured role in which we can inspire our children to be the best human beings possible. From stay-at-home mums to career women, or those who volunteer, all mothers can impart important life lessons to their offspring. With Mother’s Day just around the corner, My Weekly Preview took the time to meet two incredible women who are not only rising to the challenge but going beyond it to inspire their children in their own special ways.

DONNA PENNY MUM TO KAI, 9 AND AIDAN, 21. It’s 9am in Lombok when Donna Penny answers the phone with a vibrant hello. Vibrant and spirited is the best way to describe this incredible Warana woman. I can hear the smile in her voice as we chat. And why shouldn’t she smile – Penny is lapping up the sunshine on a much deserved mini-break in Indonesia with her friend. The holiday also doubles as a break from the brutal reality of chemotherapy. In 2008 at the relatively young age of 35, this mother of two children and three stepchildren was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had initially sought medical advice five years earlier when she discovered a lump in her breast, but was reassured it was nothing to worry about. The diagnosis couldn’t have been more wrong. “The results came back, it was in the early stages and I’d live to be an old woman,’’ she recalls. “When I was diagnosed (my son) Kai was nearly two. It was horrendous. It was really hard having chemotherapy and the first stage was really intense.” In a cruel twist of fate, five years after
receiving the all clear, Penny was delivered the life-altering news that the cancer was back and this time it had spread to her spine, hips, adrenal glands and other parts of the body. With treatment options running low and a terminal diagnosis, Penny is now fighting a losing battle and yet she has been nothing less than a tower of strength for her children.
“Of all the mummies in the world, why my mummy?’’ It is the love for her children that has spearheaded her crusade to leave her youngest, Kai, with the legacy of a mother’s love. Penny remembers the day her son, who was seven at the time, asked the heartbreaking question: “Of all the mummies in the world, why my mummy?’’ How exactly do you answer that
question? Penny’s answer was to write and publish a book to help other children just like Kai. “It just broke us (when he asked that),’’ Penny says. “It’s the reason I’m calling my book, Why my Mummy?.’’ Thanks to a crowdfunding platform and the support of Sunshine Coast digital marketing agency What the Fox, Penny has published 5000 copies of the picture book, which shares Kai’s experience of his mother’s cancer. “I couldn’t find a single book to read to Kai about cancer. How do you explain to a child what terminal means? Why your hair is falling out? How can I help my son to process the fear of losing me?” Penny’s story went global and when Carrie Bickmore from Channel Ten program The Project, got behind the cause, things took a turn for the better. “I had raised $6000 and our target was $10,000. When The Project hit the television we finished at $23,000. I’ve got a little bit of the funds left and want to use that to help publish two more books for children. “People say to me all the time (that I’m an inspiration) and I’ve got to learn in myself to say thank you. I’m just a normal myweeklypreview.com.au

person. There are people out there way worse off than me. “I’ve had a lot of family support and I have a fantastic husband. We went through another tragedy when my stepson got a brain tumour… just after that I got my terminal diagnosis. It’s been hard. “Being a mother is showing unconditional love and comfort and I just want to make whatever happens an easy transition for my family. I want them to always look forward and never look back.” Penny is now hoping bookstores will support her cause by stocking the book. Why My Mummy? will also be available online at whymymummy.com.au.
walks the walk and has set a great example for her children. When the triplets were one, she took the daunting leap into part-time study to earn the law degree she had always wanted. Needless to say, it wasn’t easy. “I was about to start working part-time and study full-time as I always wanted to do my law degree,’’ she says. “Then I found out I was pregnant and then I found out I was having triplets. I had already enrolled in the degree so I
hospital for bed rest. I spent five weeks in hospital. The kids were born at 30 weeks and one day and were in hospital for eight weeks. “They went to ICU and special care straight away. The doctors had given me steroid injections so we were fortunate there that we knew what was happening. “I didn’t know any different, so am not sure if it is harder or not to have triplets,’’ she adds. “There are easy times and hard times. But my husband has been a great
CELEBRATE MOTHER’S DAY WITH A GOOD CAUSE
Buderim mother Jacinta Roberts has her hands full. In fact, with three children all aged 11, she kind of needs an extra hand. Roberts is the kind of mum many of us look up to – she holds down a full-time position at Cotton Tree law firm Garland Waddington, is a wife and prides herself on being a mother to triplets Liam, Amelia and Ethan. She does the school drop-off and is home to cook dinner at night. On the day we chat, it takes less than a minute to establish that Roberts is the type of woman who loves her children wholeheartedly and, like many mothers, would do anything for them. Her voice is laced with tears as she speaks of the wisdom and encouragement she wants to impart to her children. “Both my husband and I have followed a career path that we are passionate about. For the kids, the lesson we want to teach them is to do what you love and we will support you through whatever you want. “I teach my children to live life and follow their passion – to commit to tasks and follow through. I am lucky to have them, and my husband, and am also lucky to have a supportive workplace.’’ Roberts doesn’t only talk the talk, but

Jacinta Roberts and her children Ethan, Amelia and Liam deferred a year.’’ To say the couple was surprised they were having triplets is an understatement. Roberts had been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, a disorder that can affect fertility and although she was on medication to improve her chances, the triplets were conceived without the assistance of IVF. “The doctors were very surprised that I was having multiples,’’ she laughs. “We were all shocked.’’ Of the challenges of juggling three newborns, Roberts says it wasn’t as difficult as some might think. “People often say I was so calm, but at 25 weeks I was fully dilated and put in
support. Talk about an inspirational father.’’ Roberts shrugs off suggestions she is an inspirational mother. “I feel a little like a hypocrite when people suggest I am an inspirational mother – I think all mothers are inspirational. “I think all mothers have it hard – especially with mother’s guilt – but I truly believe that all mothers deserve recognition. I get angry and upset at my kids, and at times am not the best that I can be. “Motherhood is a hard job, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. It is a gift that keeps on giving.’’
One in eight women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime so what better time to join together and battle the disease than on Mother’s Day? The annual Mother’s Day Classic is on May 8 from 7am, with participants running and walking to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research. The Mother’s Day Classic began in 1998 with 3000 participants in Sydney and Melbourne. Last year more than 9300 families participated in 105 events across Australia. A total of $27.4 billion has been raised to date. The Sunshine Coast event will start at Brightwater Sports Ground with the four-kilometre and eight-kilometre circuits taking place around Brightwater Lake. Brightwater Hotel is also collecting bras and for every bra that is donated they will give the Breast Cancer Foundation $1. Registration for the walk costs $25 for adults or $15 for children aged three to 18. Participants can register for the walk on the day.

MAKE THE PERFECT POSY FOR MUM As a special touch for mum this Mother’s Day, Sunshine Plaza is offering free 30-minute floral styling workshops on Saturday May 7 where guests can create a boho inspired posy for mum. Led by local florist Catherine Shipton of Woods and Bloom, guests will learn the artistry of making a posy, understanding flower seasonality and colour palettes, foraging in your own backyard and how to work with a variety of materials. “This is the first time we are offering our guests a craft style workshop, giving shoppers the opportunity to get handson, learn a new skill and make something special to give to mum this Mother’s Day,’’ Sunshine Plaza marketing manager Kylie Riches says.
$1 MILLION
According to the ABS General Social Survey in 2014, there are close to one million volunteers in Queensland. Next week marks National Volunteers Week and Sunshine Coast Council is getting behind the event by hosting the Sunshine Coast Volunteer Expo on May 11. The expo, which will run from 9am to 2pm at Lake Kawana Community Centre, follows a commitment by Mayor Mark Jamieson that the council will provide further professional development and networking opportunities for volunteers.
MIRAGE JET JOINS AIR MUSEUM The Queensland Air Museum is set to add another plane to its unique collection of more than 80 aircraft. The museum, which is solely run by volunteers, will purchase a Mirage III0(FA) A3-16 – a special aircraft which was the first Mirage jet to be manufactured in Australia. It was built at the Government Aircraft Factory in 1965 and was operated by the RAAF from 1967 to 1985. The plane will be delivered later this year to the museum, which attracts 20,000 visitors each year.
HEAD FOR SUCCESS For more than 30 years, Kurek Ashley has worked with companies including Apple, Seagate, Carlton United Brewery and Schwarzkopf on how to develop tactical success strategies to produce strong business results. This month, Sunshine Coast residents will have the chance to hear from the personal and professional development guru in person. Ashley will guest speak at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network breakfast on May 10 at Mantra in Mooloolaba. For tickets visit scbwn.org.au.

REVIEW
LAST COAST STARBUCKS TO CLOSE The world’s largest coffeehouse, Starbucks, has announced it will no longer trade on the Sunshine Coast. The business confirmed late last week that it is closing its Mooloolaba store. Located on the popular esplanade, the store was a staple of the coffee scene for the past 15 years. It was the only remaining Starbucks in the region with the Noosa and Maroochydore stores closing about eight years ago.
THIRD STARTUP WEEKEND A SUCCESS Designers, developers, students and bright sparks gathered last week for the third annual Startup Weekend Sunshine Coast. Held at the Spark Bureau in Maroochydore, the council-supported three-day event aimed to equip aspiring entrepreneurs with the skills, connections and hands-on experience they need to create and launch their own startup ventures. Councillor Steve Robinson says the region is becoming a hub for new technology-based companies. “An even more diverse range of creative, knowledge, digital, technology and professional services are set to grow on the Sunshine Coast in the future as a result of major capital projects like the undersea cable project, the solar farm and the Smart City development at Maroochydore.’’

NDIS MEANS BUSINESS SHAKE-UP
STEPPING DOWN
After more than 28 years of operation as an incorporated association, the Sunshine Coast Children’s Therapy Centre has adopted a new strategic plan and opted to trade as a company. The decision comes as the organisation aims to ready itself for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will be rolled out across Queensland on January 1, 2019. Centre chair Richard Hancock said it was a key step to ensure success in the impending NDIS market environment. Chief executive officer Debbie Blumel said it will ensure the service remains the provider of choice for families.
The inaugural Chair of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board, Emeritus Professor Paul Thomas, last week confirmed he would not seek reappointment to the role at the end of his current term, which ends on May 17. “After my role as the founding ViceChancellor of the University Sunshine Coast, it was an honour and a privilege to be selected as the inaugural Chair of the SCHHB,’’ he said. “To have had the opportunity to engage and serve the Sunshine Coast community in these two important roles is something that I have valued and been fully committed to.’’ Thomas said he wanted to focus on more personal aspects of his life.
$1.9 MILLION
Mayor Mark Jamieson joined community members and councillors last Thursday to officially open a new $1.9 million bridge in Eumundi. The concrete bridge replaced a failing timber bridge and improved the safety of motorists and pedestrians. “This new bridge, which has an estimated life span of 100 years, is almost six metres wider, with two 3.5-metre traffic lanes, 1.2-metre road shoulders and a two-metre pedestrian walkway on the eastern side,” Jamieson said.

ECKSTEIN MAKES HISTORY
26 COUNTRIES COMPETE IN SPRINTS
T
he Sunshine Coast will be in the spotlight this weekend as 5000 people from 26 countries flock to the region for the Va’a World Sprints. It has been 16 years since the world championships were hosted in Australia and organisers say the Coast is the perfect location to bring the games back to home soil. Training kicked off yesterday and competition will heat up on Sunday when the racing gets underway at the Lake Kawana Sunshine Coast Stadium location. Joining the masses of people who are expected to gather for the event will be Emma Harding of the Mooloolaba Outrigger Canoe Club. She has followed the outrigger circuit for some years as her husband Tony is a long-time competitor. And this coming week, Harding will be amongst all the action in her role as race secretary. Harding says competitors from as far and wide as Germany, Tahiti, Hawaii, Peru and New Zealand will battle it out across five days of competition for the world championship honour. “I have been involved as a member of
Mooloolaba for four years but my husband has been involved for 16 years,’’ she says. “We’ve done a lot of overseas trips… but this is the first time Tony is competing in the world sprints. “It’s pretty exciting. We have nearly 500 Australian paddlers contending. It’s good that we can have that many Australians because in the past when it’s been overseas we’ve only had a handful compete. With it in our own backyard, all can partake. “Sixteen is the age of the youngest competitor and the oldest paddler is from Australia and he is 83.” The competition will include two days of elite racing and three days of club
championships showcasing the fastest Va’a paddlers in the world. Paddlers will vie for championship titles in one-person, six-person and 12-person boats. “The elite section is the best of the best. It’s quite good viewing.’’ Sunshine Coast residents are invited to attend the event, with viewing points available in the stadium’s grandstand or lakeside. In addition to the racing, there will be a market village. Sunshine Coast Stadium will come alive on May 13 with a cultural evening where visiting countries will perform traditional song, dance and ceremonies. The Va’a World Sprints will conclude with a closing ceremony on May 15.
The face of Ironman racing was forever changed on Maroochydore Beach 36 years ago when a 16-year-old Grant Kenny made history by claiming both the junior and senior titles at The Aussies. It was on this same beach that two weeks ago Shannon Eckstein set an Ironman record by claiming his eighth Australian title. The Northcliffe star was so far ahead of his rivals he was able to stop to embrace Kenny on his way to the finish line. The Gold Coast club claimed the open double, with former Sunshine Coast competitor Rebecca Creedy winning her second Australian Ironwoman title. Around 22,000 people inundated the Coast’s beaches for the 101st anniversary of the Australian Life Saving Championships, which were held from April 16 to 24.

MY OPINION
SLICE OF HEAVEN
Sami Muirhead is over taking mere grapes to school functions and hopes a new cookbook will help heal her shame.
W
e have some pretty incredible people living in our backyard here on the Coast. I caught up this week with Kim McCosker of 4 Ingredients fame. The local mum has a new book out. It is her 26th published book. That alone is a huge accomplishment, let alone the fact the business woman has sold over eight million copies of books around the world; had her own successful TV show; and supports many local organisations financially. Kim is warm, funny, friendly and humble. Yes, she is also a picture of health and a very hard worker. She is the real deal. And clearly Kim is a very smart lady. But her latest book is extra special for Kim – 4 Ingredients Healthy Diet, reflects
a passion for the mum of three, who is determined to fight the obesity problem we are facing in Australia. Almost two in three Australians adults are overweight or obese. One in four of our of kids are overweight. Our food has got faster but our waistlines have got way bigger. I am guilty of reaching for a packet of Tiny Teddies for the kids at times when we are racing out the door instead just taking a few minutes and cutting up some fruit. “It’s in my DNA, I naturally want to help and will when I feel I can make a worthy contribution.” says Kim. “This book took me over 18 months to research to write it. I met with dieticians, nutritionists, I checked into health retreats, sojourned to Santa Monica with my team where we ate nothing but macrobiotic and raw food for a week and learnt as much as I could about using food as our medicine, our friend not our foe. I took recipes that people love and
simplified them, then spent hours laboriously calculating the nutritional information of each. If just one person buys the book and incorporates just one recipe into their weekly repertoire, then I will have helped”, Kim explains. The book is full of healthy meals that are easy and help us all get out of our funk of deciding what the heck to cook for dinner every night. Some of the offerings include banana sushi, skinny french onion dip, chicken salad and rainbow nachos. I have been lamenting of late that I do not have my own sweet slice to take to parties or whip up for birthday treats. Our standard plate when we go to a party or have a celebration at school is grapes. Yep, grapes. My good friend Alannah makes a killer caramel slice. Another girlfriend does the best rocky road you could ever dream about. Having your own slice makes you a
better person. It is that shallow and that black and white. So in order to make me a better person, and a better cook, Kim has given me my own slice. I present to you: raw chocolate brownies. You throw four things together in a bowl and whack them in the fridge. Kim knows me well. No cooking, therefore no burning and no black crumbs in the kitchen. I will let you know how my first batch turns out. Bet those supermums who bake like professionals will be lining up to be friends with me. They will be using me to get to the slice. Congratulations Kim, you are one incredible lady.

MY OPINION
THE POWER TO POLLUTE
Climate action in Australia won’t happen while our government is beholden to corporate sponsors, says Alex McKean.
I
n 2007, the then opposition leader, Kevin Rudd, described climate change as ‘the greatest moral, economic and social challenge of our time’. His first official act on being sworn in as Prime Minister was to sign the Kyoto Protocol. What we have witnessed since that time is nearly a decade of systematic blocking and undermining of any meaningful action being taken in response to that challenge, revealing the deep flaws in our political system. The influence the mining and carbon-generating lobby has been able to exert over the alleged representatives of the Australian people is enormous. It is certainly far in excess of any claims they might accurately make about the employment they provide, or of any
taxes they might pay within this jurisdiction. The truth of the matter is simple. The big miners and polluters are still making big profits from digging stuff out of the ground and burning it. Worse than that, they are receiving billions of dollars in subsidies from the government. What are a few hundreds of thousands in donations to each of the major political parties when these kinds of numbers are at stake? On the topic of numbers, they become astronomical if you factor in what it would cost to, just for example: re-establish something as complex and large as the Great Barrier Reef, or compensate, on just terms, each and every waterfront landholder in Australia. The transparency of the degree to which our governments have been captured by mining and energy
interests reached a peak during the term of the Abbott government. In that mercifully brief period, government not only obstructed meaningful action on climate change, but also actively shut down institutions designed to develop
“The big miners and polluters are still making big profits from digging stuff out of the ground” responses to it, and to inform the public of the impacts. Tony Abbott, who famously described the science underpinning climate change as ‘crap’, was probably quite comfortable with the idea that government policy should be
formulated to squeeze out innovative competitors in the renewables industry while continuing to deliver billions of dollars of public funds to miners while offshoring profits to Panama. What is more of concern is the extent to which it has been business as usual since Malcolm Turnbull’s apparently pointless knifing of his predecessor. The same policies have been pursued and there has been a comprehensive failure of any leadership, particularly when it comes to dealing with the hard-right rump of the Abbott adherents, all apparently climate change deniers, either by personal conviction, at the behest of their corporate sponsors, or both.

TRAVEL
WHAT A CROC
David Mercer gets up close and personal with a saltwater croc on an NT tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of Crocodile Dundee.
T
here are signs across the Northern Territory warning people not to enter crocodile-infested waters, so I’m understandably nervous as I prepare to take a plunge with one of the killer reptiles. I enter the Cage of Death – the terrifying title given to the glass box in front of me – for an encounter with Chopper at Darwin’s Crocosaurus Cove. Standing in nothing but my swimming shorts and a pair of goggles, I’m slowly lowered into a large outdoor tank containing the creature, leaving only my
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
head above the water. Chopper – named after the notorious criminal Mark ‘Chopper’ Read – wastes no time in approaching me. His battlescarred body is 5.5 metres long and weighs 790 kilograms. He has lost his two front feet after fighting younger crocodiles in the wild. Almost immediately, he begins circling the cage with his yellow eyes fixed on the human snack that has landed in the water. “Try a handstand for the photographer,” one of the keepers shouts to me. Trying acrobatic moves is the last thing on my mind, as I’m more concerned
about keeping all my body parts intact. However, my initial fears are overcome by the awe-inspiring sight of a saltwater crocodile at such close proximity. I’m in the Northern Territory for a tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of the region’s most famous movie. The 1986 film Crocodile Dundee, starring Paul Hogan, was shot in various locations around the territory and veteran guide Graeme Hockey knows the impact it had in promoting Australia’s Top End. “That movie put the Northern Territory on the map for tourism,” he says. We drive along the Stuart Highway and briefly pause where a single white cross stands, surrounded by empty bottles of beer and Jack Daniels. More than a decade ago, on August 3 1999, bushman Rod Ansell – widely regarded as the inspiration for the character Crocodile Dundee – shot dead a policeman at the roadside before being killed in return fire. The site is close to Girraween Lagoon, the location of one of Crocodile Dundee’s most famous scenes, where his love interest Sue Charlton – played by Linda Kozlowski - is attacked by a crocodile. There’s no danger of a repeat incident on my visit, though, as the lagoon is drained of any water during the dry season.
We stop at the Adelaide River Inn where one the stars of the film resides. Charlie the buffalo, who is famously lulled to sleep by Mick Dundee in the movie, is now stuffed and standing on the bar. After arriving in Kakadu National Park, I encounter dozens of crocodiles in the East Alligator River, which was named by English explorer Phillip Parker King in the mistaken belief that it was infested by alligators. The stretch of water is packed with crocodiles. Eleven are waiting on the river banks as our boat sets sail. As we move slowly towards one for a closer look, there’s a sudden splash as it jumps into the water, prompting a shriek from a French couple at the front of the boat. During my stay in the Northern Territory, I spend a night at the five-star Cicada Lodge in Nitmiluk National Park. It’s an ideal location for an evening dinner cruise along the Katherine Gorge, which is just a short walk away. The tour is led by the indigenous Jawoyn people and offers an opportunity to see Aboriginal rock paintings. Canoeing and swimming are allowed on the day I visit because the guides are confident there are no saltwater crocodiles around. David Mercer was a guest of the Northern Territory tourist board. – AAP

As the first hairdryer of its kind in the world, the Supersonic is small, quiet and light and controlled by a microprocessor. Air temperature is measured 20 times every second, keeping the temperature under control, and the creators claim the drying time is a lot less than from a regular hairdryer, with four temperature settings available.

The Dyson Supersonic will be available in Australia later this year. The price has not yet been confirmed but reports indicate it could be priced at around $550 when it arrives.

In collaboration with Korean researchers, scientists at the CSIRO have created a membrane which opens and closes in a similar way to how cactus plants retain water in harsh environments. “This means that fuel cells can remain hydrated without the need for bulky external humidifier equipment,” CSIRO researcher Dr Cara Doherty said of the research, published in scientific journal Nature on Thursday. “We also found that the skin made the fuel cells up to four times as efficient in hot and dry conditions.” AAP
True crime buffs will find this podcast fascinating and informative, if not a little eerie. DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election. At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you must number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you must number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
This federal election your vote will help shape Australia.

TRANSFORMING ORDINARY MEALS INTO EXTRAORDINARY – AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH Jacqui Wilson-Smith is changing the way people around the world think about food, and we’ve uncovered her secrets. As Head of Innovation and Marketing at Gourmet Garden, she is shaking up the international herbs and spices industry by applying cutting edge innovative business practices to give people everywhere the power to transform their ordinary meals into extraordinary masterpieces. Since 2009, Jacqui has led a team of innovative thinkers to put the customer’s journey first; looking at their business through the lens of the customer in an effort to maximise their culinary experience. In doing so, they have unearthed an opportunity in the conventional dried and preserved herb market and applied disruptive innovation and design led thinking to introduce a new product range into pantries, blowing competitors out of the kitchen.
“We thought let’s not wait for a competitor to do it, let’s do it ourselves.”

SECRETS TO INNOVATION

Define your competition and benchmark help combine the strengths of the Coast’s local agricultural industry and community alike. It’s this commitment to the community and her passion for sustainable industries that make her an innovation expert and a culinary genius, set to take food production on the Coast to new international levels. Jacqui will be among speakers at Immerge - an exclusive business leaders event - on Friday 6 May at TAFE Queensland East Coast. Speakers include:
“We thought let’s not wait for a competitor to do it, let’s do it ourselves,” Jacqui said. “It’s a reiterative process: observe, draw insights and conclusions, brainstorm ideas to solve problems or latent needs, prototype and test and repeat. “There’s often a lot of talk about disruptive innovation in the digital sphere (like Apple or Uber), but it’s possible to apply disruptive innovation to any industry,” she said. This unique approach has seen the organisation receive a number of awards around the world and is widely admired as one of the most radical disruptive innovations in its field. The team has won a Good Design Award 2014, Product of the Year 2015, a World Star Packaging Organization Award in 2015 and the greatest award of all, doubling sales in its category - not bad for a local business based in the back of Palmwoods don’t you think? Jacqui is one of the founding members of the Food and Agribusiness network and is actively applying the same approach to

WHEN FEAR CONTROLS YOU Jodi Chapman says the key to coping with fear is to drop expectations and learn to experience life as it is, just like you did as a child.
I
s fear holding you back from being happy? From achieving your goals and dreams, or even simply achieving daily tasks? Fears can be innate, they can develop over time if you’re stressed, or they could be caused by your biochemistry, causing anxiety. So where is yours coming from, and how much time will you waste living this way? Sometimes our experiences in life are lessons, to learn to move forward and achieve happiness, to face our fears and find peace. To resolve fears we must understand them. Emotionally, fears can develop from expectations formed throughout life that have not come to fruition, and perhaps we fear loss, or dread something terrible will happen. In early life, we have no expectation as we have nothing learned to compare to, so we

live life experiencing every day as a new adventure. Once aware of what we want, we form an expectation or belief from what we know, forgetting how to experience, and falling into expectation of what life should be, keeping us from feeling the joy and happiness in that day when we don’t reach that expectation. Afraid of what we are missing, chasing what we don’t have, wasting time instead of enjoying what we do have, or spending that time to work toward what we want, are we holding onto the expectations of the past, yet losing all the time we need to work on the dreams of the future? Let’s experience again rather than expect, and learn to be adventurous again. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

GOING ALL OUT FOR BEAUTY Gwyn loves this Aussie made gradual tanner
Gwyneth Paltrow will “pretty much try anything” in the quest for health and beauty. The 43-year-old actress has tried a variety of out there beauty treatments for her Goop.com newsletter, including getting deliberately stung by a bee. “There’s an ancient remedy for arthritis, inflammation and scar tissue where they sting you with a bee,”she said during an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden last week. A less painful treatment Paltrow has given the thumbs up to is a product by a small Queensland-based company, MooGoo. She recommended MooGoo’s How Now Brown Cow gradual tanning cream on Goop.com, saying it’s a genuinely natural, healthy and moisturising gradual tanner which contains DHA, a canola-derived natural tanning ingredient. It also contains milk protein and purified green tea extract, $22.50 from moogoo.com.au.

FUSS-FREE FALSIES Created by Brisbane woman Sarah Baker, the Sarah Jean Three Piece Lash Kit is brilliant. My Weekly Preview journalist Leigh Robshaw trialled the kit and loved it: “I’m not very dexterous with false eyelashes so I never wear them, but this kit makes them super quick and easy to use. First, you apply the adhesive to your lashes and the false lashes using the mascara wand, then press the lashes into place using the nifty tweezer applicator. No sticky fingers and they look gorgeous. Highly recommended.” Vegan and cruelty-free. Visit sarahjean.com.au.

BUDGET PLANNING Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim. threshold will increase from $286,500 to $375,000. This change will see an estimated 50,000 current part-pensioners entitled to the full age pension and a further 170,000 pensioners receiving a pension increase. The second aspect to the changes will have a detrimental effect to over 325,000 pensioners. This change is the increase in the taper rate – the amount of pension that you lose for assets above the lower threshold. Currently the pension of a couple will reduce by a combined $1.50 per fortnight for every $1,000 over the limit. However, from January 1, 2017 this reduction will increase to $3 for every $1,000 over the limit. This is an annual reduction equivalent to 7.8 per cent which is around two and a half times the current term deposit interest rate of 3 per cent. As a result the cut-off limit, where your pension will stop, has been drastically reduced. In the case of a pensioner couple who own their home
M
alcolm Turnbull made a slight change to government procedure by bringing forward the date of the Federal Budget to May 3 this year. However, before we concern ourselves with the recently announced changes that may or may not be passed into law it is important to review what future changes have already been legislated. The 2015 Budget announced some major changes to the Centrelink asset test. These proposals were passed into law on June 30, 2015 and come into effect on January 1, 2017. The first part of the change will be welcomed by many because it increases the asset test limit to qualify for a full pension. For a couple who own the home they live in this lower asset

income support recipients who lose their payment entitlement as a result of the changes will be automatically issued with a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card or a Health Care Card for those under pension age. They will be exempt from the usual income test requirements for these cards indefinitely. There may be instances where it is beneficial to reduce your level of assessable assets before the new changes come into effect on January 1, 2017 and there are many options that can be implemented to achieve this. However it is important to look at your entire situation including total level of income before any decision to change your investments is made.
the new cut-off will be $823,000. This could mean a loss of pension payments of about $14,000 per annum for a couple with assessable assets around the $823,000 cut-off. The government has announced that

BONDS BID A US clothing company has made a $1.1 billion takeover bid for the owner of Australia’s favourite underwear, Bonds. HanesBrands has offered $1.15 cash per share for Pacific Brands, which amounts to a 22 per cent premium to last Wednesday’s closing share price of 94 cents. Pacific Brands, which also owns Berlei and Jockey underwear brands and linen label Sheridan, is urging shareholders to support the offer. In a statement issued to the Australian share market the company says its directors have unanimously recommended the transaction to
shareholders. The group’s chairman Peter Bush says the 100 per cent cash offer was compelling and attractive. Bush says the transaction was expected to have limited impact on the group’s continuing operations and employees. The takeover offer comes after Pacific Brands showed signs its transformation plan to turnaround sluggish sales and return to profit was working. The group reported a half year net profit of $24.3 million in February, a big improvement on its $108.7 million loss made in the same period a year ago.

My oldest boy turned 14 this week. Affectionately known as ‘Noah’s brother Fynn’, I like him a fair bit. He’s growing into a tops young bloke, but over the last few days I couldn’t help reflecting on where all the time’s gone from tiny little fella to 14-year-old surfing dude with the boyish good looks of a young Layne Beachley. I remember as if it were yesterday that he was calling me Dah…then that morphed into Dadda, Daddy, Dad, Todd and now these days he just simply calls me Dude. Not The Dude like Jeff Bridges’ legendary character from The Big Lebowski movie, nah nothing cool like that. It’s just Dude. My wife Michelle reckons it’s because he knows he’s not my favourite. I’m like, “What are you talking about?” Michelle says, “Out of our two oldest boys you’ve made it clear he’s not your favourite.” I’m all, “That’s simply not true, I don’t have a favourite and it’s ridiculous to suggest otherwise. Out of our two big fellas, there’s Noah and there’s
Not-Noah.” Of course, Fynn is the lad I told you about last year when he turned 13 and I mentioned I sat down on his bed with him and said, “Hey mate, thought it might be time we talked a bit about sex, buddy.” To which he replied putting down his iPad, “Sure Todd no problem, what would you like to know?” Noah’s brother Fynn has a cracking sense of humour and recently we began trading bar room jokes. Jesus walks into a bar and says, “I’ll just have a water please”, to which the barman replies, “No way, not this again Jesus”. A short time later a Priest, a Rabbi and a Scotsman walk into the bar and the barman says, “Is this some kind of joke?”. Then there’s the one about the screwdriver that waltzes into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender says, “Hey mate, we’ve got a drink named after you”. And the screwdriver says, “really, you have a drink named Murray?”.

MY TIME
I’ve loved dumb bar-room jokes since Caitlyn Jenner was a boy and the good news is they are extremely alive and well among young Strayans in 2016. Here’s a list of my favourites. A guy walks into a bar and asked for a packet of helicopter chips, the barman says, “Sorry pal, we only have plain”. Kim Kardashian walks into a bar with a duck under her arm. The barman says “Hey, where’d you find that mole?”. Kim Kardashian says, “Um, I think you’ll find it’s not a mole it’s a duck”. To which the barman replies, “Um, I think you’ll find I was talking to the duck”. Horse walks into a bar. Bartender says, “Why the long face?” Sarah Jessica Parker walks into a bar and… sorry it’s the same joke. And my absolute favourite of all time. The Paper Cowboy. Local sherriff walks into the saloon he says, “Listen up ya’ll. Has anybody seen the Paper Cowboy?”. The bartender says “Well now Sherriff I ain’t sure, what’s he look like?”. Sherriff says, “ Well he’s got paper boots, paper hat, paper pants and a paper gun with a paper belt and a paper shirt”. The barman says “Well shoot Sherriff, I ain’t seen nobody conformin’ to that description, why, what’s he wanted fer?”. And the Sherriff says, “Rustlin’.” To wash down the taste of comedy gold this week, I highly recommend a little something from South America. Relax your freckle, it’s legal and it’s a tops tasting beer. Given the crazy success of Corona and even Sol, it’s apparent us Aussies are keen as for more cerveza style beers. Cerveza is the Spanish word for beer so it looks like I just said beer style beer. However these South American cervezas have a very distinct taste, crisp, refreshing, slightly sweet with a very

mild bitterness in the aftertaste. The Aguila Cerveza hails from Columbia and has a pretty typical Mex style vibe about it, with a light golden appearance, mild hoppy nose and a smooth, slightly creamy taste. It’s only four per cent, which makes it a very sessionable brew and as with most cervezas it isn’t a bloaty, heavy experience. Having said that, it could be considered a bit thin for seasoned drinkers so if you’re looking for a beer full of robust, exciting flavours then this isn’t for you. But if you want a beer you can drink all day, that’s thoroughly refreshing and tastes pretty good with or without lime, then Aguila is your poison amigos. I give the world famoso Aguila Cerveza a solido four out of five thumbs up.

GEAR UP FOR SEA N SOUND With only five weeks left until the Sea N Sound Festival takes over Mooloolaba, music lovers are being urged to secure their tickets. The event, which focuses on the coastal lifestyle, will feature live original music, local seafood and craft beer. Australian musician Pete Murray is earmarked to headline the June 11 festival. It was in 2003 that Murray’s smooth sounds were introduced to Australian listeners when his album Feeler skyrocketed up the music charts. The Aria nominee will be joined by blues singer/songwriter Ash Grunwald. For 12 years, Grunwald has been at the forefront of success in the Australian music scene, having been nominated for six ARIA awards and three APRA awards. The relaxed sounds of the two artists are a perfect match for the laidback festival, which will showcase the region’s fresh seafood vendors and 10 craft brewers. The event will be held in the Wharf Tavern and Underwater World car park from midday through to 10pm. Tickets are $40 and available from Moshtix. com.au or bought on the day for $45.

MOTORING
CHANGING COLORADO
T
he redesigned 2017 Chevrolet Colorado has made its public debut in Brazil giving Australians an indication of what’s on the horizon for the popular vehicle later this year. Following the Bangkok reveal of the GM Australian-built Colorado Xtreme show vehicle, the redesigned 2017 Colorado is introduced with fresh styling, increased technology and an extended range of accessories inspired by the show vehicle. Holden’s executive director of sales Peter Keley says the redesigned Colorado promised greater refinement, new advanced connectivity and safety features, along with distinctive new styling. “The Chevrolet Colorado revealed by our Brazilian colleagues is the result of ongoing work between Holden and Chevrolet Brazil and a clear indication of where the Holden Colorado is heading,” he says. “With significant local engineering, this vehicle will be the most refined Colorado ever while maintaining all of the capability of the current model.
Customers with a desire to personalize their vehicle will be able to choose from popular additions including safari bar, sports bar and optional alloy wheels, allowing customers to effectively recreate the well-received show car.
ENGINEERING
When combined with a new design that balances elegance and strength, it will perfectly bridge the gap between weekday workhorse and weekend explorer. “It will also follow the lead set by Spark, Captiva and Insignia VXR, boasting advanced technology features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a new Holden MyLink infotainment system.”
FEATURES The Colorado has been designed with a
tough, yet refined appearance. Its lines are more angular and purposeful, a nod to its American-truck DNA. It features a distinctive, sporty front fascia, combined with an extended slim line grille and more muscular bonnet. The interior is built on a rugged design with a full styling makeover that focuses on comfort, spaciousness, refinement and technology. The console features an eight inch colour touchscreen and houses MyLink infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Armed with customer feedback of the current Colorado, Holden engineers collaborated with international colleagues to ensure they were able to give Colorado a more refined, comfortable drive without losing any of the tough characteristics it is known for. Holden vehicle development Manager Jeremy Tassone says the new model has been developed with key Australian engineering input. “Colorado customers use the vehicle for different purposes depending on the market,” he says. “We’ve worked hard to make sure we have engineered greater refinement without losing any of Colorado’s tough characteristics, off-road capability and impressive towing capacity.” The all-new Colorado will hit Australian shores later this year.

SMART INVESTMENT STRATEGY
Make sure you know what renters are looking for before you buy an investment property, writes Candice Holznagel.
P
roperty investment on the Sunshine Coast can be a great way to make some long-term gains. For those who are looking at delving into the investment market, there are a few things to keep in mind. It’s important to consider what tenants are looking for in a rental home before you purchase a property. First National Real Estate shares some interesting points about tenants. McCrindle’s Renter of the Future report shows that almost one-third of Australians are tenants. By having a home on the rental market, you’re tapping into this group of residents. Not to mention, having a property under your name is never a bad thing on a rainy day. You can always use it as collateral to take out another loan or you can simply sell it down the road for a quick payout. However, for your investment strategy to really take off, you’ll want your rental property to have as close to 100 per cent tenancy as possible. Any time your home is unoccupied, it’s a
even though there are simply more detached houses than any other kind of property, renters actually buck the trend, making these minority dwellings more relatively favoured by tenants.

negatively geared asset, meaning you’ll be making repayments straight from your pocket. The Australian Bureau of Statistics says that in 2013 to 2014, mortgage holders pay an average of $453 a week on housing costs – something you don’t want your savings to face the full brunt of. McCrindle’s report reveals that 73 per cent of renters are stable renters, who are people that prefer to reside in one location for a while. It is these people you want to attract in order to get a steady cash flow coming in from your rental properties.
TYPE OF HOUSING Figures from the release show that the majority of renters (63 per cent) live in detached houses. Simultaneously, 22 per cent live in units or apartments and 14 per cent in semi-detached houses. Does this mean it’s harder to find tenants if you buy anything except a standalone house? Not at all. Quite the contrary, in fact. In Australia, 77 per cent of people (owners and renters) live in detached houses, while only 10 per cent reside in a unit or apartment and eight per cent in a semi-detached house. This means that
McCrindle’s report also shows that having allocated parking spaces, being able to have pets on the premises and being able to access cable internet are the three most popular lifestyle features that tenants search for. If you want to maximise the appeal of your rental property, then maybe it’s not such a bad idea to ensure that you have these three criteria ticked off when establishing your home on the rental market. For more market information visit firstnational.com.au.
RENTAL SNAPSHOT: • 73 per cent of renters are stable renters • 63 per cent of renters live in detached houses • 22 per cent live in units or apartments • 14 per cent of renters live in semidetached houses.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Righto then - a lot of fun last weekend with the wind backing right off, especially on Sunday. Hopefully you all scored at a secret bank. Rio Pro is set to start next week and my excitement level is zero. Last year was as boring as it gets and takes us back to the old days. To make matters worse they were surfing crap waves in real crap. But enough about poo. This weekend looks ho hum with NE wind predicted so I guess all roads lead to Happy Valley, Kawana Pocket, Double Island or Sunshine Beach. Remember time go get yourself some Indo time, my prediction is the back end of the season will fire! Actually, that is more hoping given that is when I’ll be there!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies along the Twin Waters banks on the night high tide. Bream and flathead are taking whitebait and fowl gut at the southern end of Goat Island. You can get trevally and chopper tailor at the motorway bridge on micro jigs. SURF: You can jag dart and sand whiting on pippies at the Maroochy Bar. There are chopper tailor and flathead along Maroochy North Shore using baby blue pillies. You can get shovel nosed rays and sharks at Alexandra Headland on mullet fillet. OFFSHORE: Close in reefs are best for Maori cod, Moses perch and sweetlip with snapper, pearl perch and trevally on the Barwon Banks. There are spanner crabs east of Coolum. You can find long tail tuna just outside the shark nets right along the coast. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is working well for bass, golden perch and jew with live shrimps and deep diver lures best. Joh’s Dam is also good for bass and golden perch with red claw thrown in as well. Locally, Lake Macdonald near Cooroy and Borumba Dam have been returning saratoga, bass and Mary River cod on flies and lures.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Many rams are feeling restless, as projects stall. Mars is doing a number on you, and forcing you to be patient … something that doesn’t come naturally! Relationships and money are also in the firing line this week, as Mercury reverses through your self-esteem and cash zone.
TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Even though Mercury is still reversing through your sign (which can be very frustrating) things pick up this week as Neptune, Jupiter and Pluto all make pleasant aspects to Venus. So it’s a wonderful week to be creative, spiritual and/or sociable.
GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) This week you’ll be easily bored, so make sure your timetable’s full of fun projects. Home is a hive of activity, as Jupiter moves forwards and people come and go. A close relationship is frustrating, but hang in there! If you are patient then things will improve.
CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Hey crabs … your daily routine seems to be moving along at a snail’s pace but be patient and have faith that things are happening behind the scenes. When it comes to a friend or acquaintance, all is not as it seems so be sure to separate fact from fiction.
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) With Venus and retro Mercury in your work zone, strive to patch up problems in a cooperative fashion, as you hold out the olive branch of peace. You’re very focused on professional projects but don’t put all your eggs in the one work basket.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) Delays and disruptions may unsettle your Virgo cool. Things are constantly changing, so stay flexible. You’re keen to work hard, but don’t let your perfectionist streak get out of control. If you worry about getting things 100% right, then you’ll never try anything new.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Monday is fabulous for flirting, romance, creativity, spiritual pursuits and delicious daydreams. But avoid the temptation to blow the budget with some spontaneous binge shopping. The planets caution you to be unusually sensible, and to save rather than spend.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) Attached Scorpions – your love life looks problematic, as you seem to be heading in opposite directions. This week, take the time to re-connect and find some satisfying middle ground. Singles – you’re looking for your soul mate but are you sending out mixed messages?
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Prepare for a somewhat schizophrenic week! Jupiter (your patron planet) moves forwards on Monday, so you’ll feel like powering ahead with all sorts of projects in typical Sagittarian style. But being impulsive and impetuous could backfire badly this week.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Capricorns are usually awesome organisers. But with Mars and Saturn both retrograde, your managerial mojo may have (temporarily) deserted you. Don’t feel frustrated. Use the next few weeks to recharge your rundown batteries and reboot your self-belief.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) With retrograde Mars and retrograde Saturn both slowing things down considerably, your ambitious goals may seem unreachable at the moment but don’t be discouraged Aquarius. With plenty of planning and persistence, you can make your dreams come true.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) The week starts well with Venus and Neptune making beautiful music together, so put aside time to express yourself creatively. Pisceans are super romantic souls, but don’t end up being a martyr in love. If your partner isn’t treating you well, stand up for yourself.

THE LAST WORD
A GAMBLE PAYS OFF When Richard O’Leary’s Sunday didn’t turn out as planned, disappointment soon turned to delight.
T
aking your five- and sevenyear-old sons to a day at the races may not be Parenting 101, but it proved to be a good bet recently when I threw out the form book and went for an event that would have been at long odds for us to go to at the start of that Sunday. Three puns in one sentence, I am off to a flying start – make that four. Now this wasn’t any race meeting, this was the third annual Kilcoy Diggers Race Cup Day. It was free entry, it had horses (which my boys love) and it was about an hour to drive there so it would help in my aim to keep us out of the house for the day so my wife could concentrate on her fledgling online business. So after 60 minutes in the car and with only one threat of throwing up, we arrived at the ‘Moonee Valley of the North’ – a reference to the race track in Melbourne and a rather tenuous link
derived from their similar shapes. One thing they certainly don’t have in common is the quality of the surface the horses race on, which explains why five minutes after we arrived at the races they were called off due to a large trench just after the finishing line. For some reason, the song A Pub With No Beer started to play in my head, which wasn’t perfect timing as I was trying to work out how to break the news to my sons. The ground announcer came to the rescue: “We apologise for the inconvenience…you will still be able to bet…(long pause)… and all the food is free.” At that moment, we were one person away from being at the front of the food queue, and three serves of fish and chips helped to make the medicine go down. The boys did get to see some racing – some kids steering Shetland ponies
around the track. It was like watching the Melbourne Cup in miniature, slow-mo and without atmosphere – but was well received nonetheless. The bitterly disappointed owners of the real horses, many of them who had driven hundreds of kilometres, were incredibly kind to my boys as they let them into their stables to pat the thoroughbreds. We stayed for the ANZAC commemoration, where the crowd stood as one and paid its respects a day early, and then we were off, our adventure nearly over. We finished strongly – an ice-cream at the park across from the BP servo, and posing as a Yowie at one of those goofy signs where you stick your head through and have your picture taken. A winning day. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
