o you know what I love most about the Olympics? The stories about how people got there – overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds to become one of a select group of men and women among the seven billion or so people on this planet who can call themselves an Olympian. In our cover story, Leigh Robshaw meets some Sunshine Coast swimmers who have done just that and will represent Australia at the upcoming Rio games. How they made it is well worth a read. Also this week you get the chance to hear about a magician who turned herself into an artist, travel to Thailand to check out Chiang Mai, and test drive the new Mercedes SUV, which has been a decade in the making. There’s fashion, the latest news and views, places to go, people to see, technology to master and life tips to adopt. We also have plenty of property, including a close look at the state of play for development in the region. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
RISK VS REWARD
Kelly Thomas of Buderim had a dream media job, but at 28 she made the bold move to quit and start her own advertising agency, ADFX. FIRST JOB?
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
During high school, making Thermocouples (temperature control systems), but first full-time job: Secretary/ Property Manager at Elders Real Estate Coffs Harbour.
Hard question – I’m not sure I can pin it down to just one defining day in my life. Bringing two healthy children into this world has to be at the top of the list.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
OMG – where do I start my list is so LOOOONG right now. Currently working on new media and marketing plans for various clients which entails budget forecasting, product reviews, market and media research, media strategies, planning and negotiations. . . so lots of figures and stats.
Quitting an awesome media job to start my own advertising agency at 28. There was never really a lot of forward planning at first as to where I wanted to take the business or how big I wanted it to be, but I’ve really enjoyed the journey I’ve taken since making that decision and the amazing relationships I’ve developed along the way. I’ve never looked back and having my own business has really challenged me and taken me places that I never would have dreamed of, both personally and professionally.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Hubby Grant, two gorgeous kids aged six and eight, plus one crazy cat Abbi. My parents also made the move to the coast a few years ago.
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? Mainly just Kel, but I also answer to Smell, Smelly, or Deano (from my maiden name).
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
FIRST CAR?
I’m chilling out with the family.
Red Mitsubishi Lancer, which my big bro wrote off one month from me sitting my Ps.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
FAVOURITE BOOK? Thrive by Arianna Huffington.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Treat others as you would like to be treated and dream big, believe in yourself and never ever give up.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Moved here in February 2000, spent three years in Brisbane but returned to the Coast again in 2006.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? The lifestyle is obviously amazing and it’s a great place to bring up kids, with outstanding education opportunities, and be able to provide them with a real sense of community at the same time. Plus we’re only an hour from Brisbane.
FAVOURITE PLACE? So many faves here on the Coast. Just hanging at any of the amazing beaches or taking a day trip to the hinterland. I just love the diversity that the Sunshine Coast offers and
8 My Weekly Preview | May 13, 2016
8.indd 1
the natural beauty that we have on our doorstep. You can’t beat an afternoon picnic at Alex Headland or a sunrise at Port Cartwright.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? There’s always a beach visit followed by a lazy afternoon lunch somewhere nearby at one of the amazing restaurants. If they’ve never been here before, we usually do the tourist attractions like Australia Zoo, Sealife at Mooloolaba and The Ginger Factory, plus a hinterland trip or day exploring Noosa are also big winners.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? Well if I had a magic wand, I would add more parking as the Coast is growing rapidly and attracting more visitors and new residents every year. Forward planning to accommodate and sustain such growth will be paramount for the region.
Probably myself to be honest. I’m very impatient and want everything to happen now – like right now, and of course life’s not like that. There’s never enough hours in the day to complete everything you set out to achieve, which to me is super frustrating.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Well I do have a potty mouth so after much language I try to remind myself to just stop – breathe – relax – and focus on the important issues in life instead – the things that you can actually control instead of all the stuff you can’t.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Travel, travel, travel. And don’t take things so seriously, just enjoy the NOW moments in your life.
TEA OR COFFEE? A strong little cappuccino first up followed by herbal teas throughout the day.
NRL OR AFL AND WHO DO YOU FOLLOW? NRL Bulldogs but enjoy watching all codes of footy.

ON THE ROAD TO RIO
The USC Spartans swimming team is breaking down stereotypes as they head to the Rio Olympics and Paralympics. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
“We put more swimmers on the Australian team than any club in the country. Three rookies made the Olympic team and seven swimmers made the Paralympic team…” L to R: Chris Mooney, Jacob Templeton, Jake Packard, Braedan Jason, Blake Cochrane, Leah Neale, Michael Anderson, Rick Pendleton, Guy Harrison-Murray, Jan Cameron, Taylor McKeown (Paralympic swimmer Logan Powell absent). ater streams across pure muscle as Jake Packard emerges from the pool in his black Speedos and purple swimming cap. It’s immediately apparent he’s an Olympic swimmer. At 195 centimetres tall, he has the classic v-shaped swimmer’s body: broad shoulders, biceps sculpted by years in the pool, six-pack abs and a narrow waist. Charismatic and confident, he has the bearing of a winner, but only two years ago he almost gave up on his dream. It’s 8.30am on a drizzly Friday morning at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s aquatic centre and Packard has been at the pool training since 6am. In August, he’ll represent Australia at the Rio Olympics in the 100-metre men’s breaststroke and 4x100-metre men’s relay and with only three months to go, the countdown is on. So is he nervous? “No, I’m not nervous now — I’m excited,” he says, flashing a smile at coach Chris Mooney. “I know I can swim faster.” It’s an about-face for the Noosa swimmer who almost quit the sport when he failed to qualify for the London Olympics four years ago. “At 18, I’d been stuck on the same time for about four years,” he says. “It was pretty frustrating doing the same thing over and over and not getting a result. I just didn’t have the drive for it. I have a really good friend who does mind training, Julie Robinson. One day I was 12 My Weekly Preview | May 13, 2016

swimming and I just didn’t even want to finish the lap. I was pretty emotional so I called her. She said I needed to work on my priorities. She said, ‘what do you want’? So I called Mooney up and said I want to make an Australian team and hopefully an Olympics team, and he said we’re going to get you there. Four weeks later I moved to Brisbane.” Packard’s parents supported his move to Brisbane to train with Mooney, a top
Swimming Championships in Adelaide in April. Ten Spartans swimmers qualified for the 65-strong Australian team for the Olympics and Paralympics — a remarkable result for a program that began only 12 months ago. Now based in Mooloolaba close to the university’s world-class training facility, Packard is still on a high after making the Olympic qualifying time of 59.67 seconds at the selection trials in Adelaide.
“To be at this level you’re going to have that eye of the tiger and that competitive streak, but you’ll come undone if you just focus on the result” Chris Mooney, USC Spartans swimming coach
Australian coach who had worked with coaching legend Denis Cotterill on the Gold Coast and at the University of Hawaii. When Mooney was appointed to coach the high-performance Spartans swimming team alongside Paralympic team coach Jan Cameron at USC one year ago, Packard jumped at the chance to move back to the Coast. The Spartans stunned Australia when they came third out of 280 clubs from around Australia at the National
“My girlfriend Tiana came down to surprise me — she was bawling her eyes out and so was I,” he says. “Mum and Dad were so happy. They’ve done everything for me and sacrificed a lot. All those mornings of getting up to take me to the pool have paid off.” Chris Mooney is standing by listening, and the rapport between the two is clear. Both are surfers, and Mooney likes to rib Packard about how good the surf is when there’s a competition coming up and
Packard has to skip surfing so as not to burn out. Mooney is thrilled with Packard’s progress, but continually reminds him not to focus on winning a medal. It’s a surprising approach – surely visualising that big gold disc hanging around your neck as you stand on the top step of an Olympic podium would be the best motivation any athlete could have. “We’re never results oriented, that’s a big mistake people have made in the past,” Mooney says. “To be at this level you’re going to have that eye of the tiger and that competitive streak, but you’ll come undone if you just focus on the result. Once upon a time, people did the big Rocky speech and some people still do that, but I find the majority of people will perform better if they control the controllables. It’s definitely a vogue thing now. You can’t control what others are doing, you can only control what you’re doing and that’s our process that we trust. If you focus on the goal of being the best you can, I think you get better coverage. It helps with pressure.” Daily improvements in technique, strength, skill, power and speed is within their control. To achieve it, they follow an intensive weekly program: 20 hours in the pool, four hours of gym work and two hours of yoga, Pilates and activation exercises, plus massage and physiotherapy. USC’s Dr Danielle Formosa, a sports scientist specialising in swimming biomechanics, is working with myweeklypreview.com.au

the team and will accompany them to Rio, and USC sports scientist Mark McKean is the team’s strength and conditioning guru. “The hidden training – rest, recovery and diet – is non-stop,” says Mooney. As Mooney and Packard run though the day’s schedule out by the pool, standing inside the adjacent café is a man with a prosthetic leg, chatting quietly with a colleague. Most people who use the university’s aquatic centre would be unaware of his instrumental role in creating it. Brendan Burkett is a four-time Paralympic swimmer who was the Australian Paralympic Swim team sport science coordinator at Beijing and London. He’s also a Professor of Sport Science (Biomechanics) and a Sport and Exercise Science researcher at the university. Mooney says the success of the USC Spartans team all stems back to him. “He had a vision quite a few years ago to implement this whole scenario we find ourselves in now,” Mooney says. “He worked very hard to create this opportunity and I’m just really proud of his vision – and proud of Jan’s and my work, along with the athletes – to help that dream come true.” “We’ve been working on this for ten years,” says Burkett. “You push, you fight, you argue and you persist with funding agencies, just to try to get things set up and try to open doors. We just wanted to create the environment for highperformance sport. When we started we had nothing.” The swimmers now have the benefit of a ten-lane, 50-metre Olympic pool, gym, underwater cameras, heart rate monitors, blood lactate monitors, race analysis systems, recovery compression boots and hot and cold water immersion pools. “We’ve got a whole heap of stuff that’s international standard,” says Burkett. “Because we’re connected to the university sports science and medicine areas, it allows us to keep up-to-date with changing technology. “We’re the first university in Australia
SPARTANS POOL THEIR TALENTS
Jake Packard training at USC, April 29 to be accredited by the Australian Institute of Sport with a National Sports Science Quality Assurance. We’re as good as the highest standard you can get in the country. “We just want to create the environment where someone can reach their potential in their sport. The beauty is, because we’re strongly connected to the university, we can really push a life outside of sport. Our philosophy is that you’ve got to earn or learn.” For Packard, that means doing a summer school intensive in November, once the Olympics are over. He’s studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in animal ecology and is passionate about animals, hoping to one day work with them. But he’s focusing on one dream at a time and for now, the books can wait. “There’s a lot of work to do,” says Mooney. “There’s a vision in the back of my mind. We won’t be counting down the days, we’ll be making the days count.”
The fledgling USC Spartans swimming team made Australia sit up and take notice after their stellar performance at the 2016 National Swimming Championships in Adelaide in April, finishing third on points ahead of many well-established clubs. All seven members of coach Jan Cameron’s squad won places in the Australian Paralympic team, while Jack Packard, Leah Neale and Taylor McKeown from Chris Mooney’s squad made their first Olympic team. Cameron and Mooney have both been selected as coaches for the Australian team and USC sports scientists Dr Danielle Formosa and Professor Brendan Burkett will also travel to Rio with the team. The Spartans are a united team of Olympic and Paralympic swimmers and Burkett says it’s unprecedented to have so many high-performance swimmers coming out of one regional area. “We put more swimmers on the Australian team than any club in the country,” he says. “Three rookies made the Olympic team and seven swimmers made the Paralympic team and four of them are rookies. We haven’t just bought a high-performance team, we’ve coached and nurtured literally rookies to take them to the highest level – we certainly haven’t opened up the chequebook to do it.” “We’re proud of our Spartans,” says Mooney. “We don’t see ourselves as two different teams – we’re team Spartan. We’re a team of athletes. It’s a big thing for us, to have that identity and compete as a united team. “Jan has been a stalwart of the sport for many years and it’s very rare that I don’t walk into work and learn something from her and become a better coach and a better person just from my relationship with her.” Jan Cameron won a silver medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and has been
coaching since 1967. She was recently awarded a Platinum Coaching Licence by Swimming Australia, only the third Australian woman to have received the sport’s highest coaching accolade. “The Spartans team is unique in the country,” says Cameron. “Both groups use common support staff and work together and separately at times. Both coaches can interact and swimmers can interact. It’s a bit of a different model that hasn’t been used much in the world — a para group and an able-bodied group working together is quite unusual and that’s why it’s so successful. “I believe that they are athletes and therefore I coach them to become really independent, strong athletes and to me that has nothing to do with their disabilities. Their disabilities are physical and they have to contend with that, but it doesn’t really influence my coaching of them. “Danielle Formosa works with both groups on site. We get filming at least monthly sometimes more, we assess that filming and measure it against the processes we’ve set down that we want to achieve, the turn times, the turn angles, the dive angles, the stroke they’re doing, the length of it, how that distance is improving. She does the analysis of that. We look at best practice in the world, then we look at what we’ve got and their previous history and what components have to improve if the time is going to improve. “I’d like to see them each move forward on what they did to make the team so that they are achieving their special goals that they have and that they come away from Rio knowing they had a great time and represented Australia with honour.”
The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in Rio, Brazil from August 5 to 21.

SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION RATES SOAR Australia has one of the highest rates of food allergy in the world and the incidence is increasing at what experts say is an alarming rate. Food Allergy Week will take place from May 15 to 21 and Allergy & Anaphylaxis Australia is calling on the community to help raise awareness and understanding. President Maria Said says hospital admission rates for severe allergic reaction have doubled in the past decade. “Today, one in 10 babies born in Australia will develop a food allergy. And, it is estimated that there are approximately 30,000 new cases of food allergy each year.” For information on how to support the event or to donate visit foodallergyaware.com.

SIMON AMBROSE LEAVES ON A HIGH NOTE Three years after taking on the role, Visit Sunshine Coast chief executive Simon Ambrose has resigned from the organisation. Ambrose announced his resignation late last week. He has been recognised as being instrumental in helping the Sunshine Coast boost its reputation as one of Queensland’s best tourism destinations. The organisation’s marketing and strategic partnerships head, Simon Latchford, will act as CEO until a replacement is found.
P&O SAILS INTO COAST FOR A SECOND TIME P&O cruise ship the Pacific Jewel made its second visit to the Sunshine Coast this week when it dropped anchor off Mooloolaba on Wednesday. Mayor Mark Jamieson said another warm welcome awaited the 1950 passengers. “Council has worked hard to encourage and support the arrival of these cruise ships and we’re very excited to welcome six more this year. Each cruise ship visit can potentially deliver an estimated $250,000 boost to the local economy and our businesses and tourism operators are doing an outstanding job in recognising the fantastic opportunities these visits present.” The Pacific Aria will be the next ship to visit the region when it docks in June.
FLAXTON PERFORMER IN STATE FINALS Performing artist Allycia Staples has made it through to the top four in the Queensland Young Achiever Awards. Staples is one of four finalists nominated in the Coffee Club Arts and Fashion Award. The Flaxton artist has represented the region on the national and international stage, having travelled to Mont D’ore, New Caledonia in 2012 as part of the Coast’s Sister City Program and more recently as an Artist in Residence with the Accessible Arts Catalyst Program in Sydney. As a member of the disability community, she is excited about the recognition as a performing artist. The winners will be announced on May 20 at a Gala Dinner in Brisbane.
JULY 2
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull this week confirmed Australians will vote in the federal election on July 2. It will mark the first double dissolution election in almost 30 years. Turnbull, who kicked off his eight-week campaign in Brisbane, said the coalition had a clear plan for jobs and growth. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten also opted to hit the Queensland trail and kicked off his campaign in Cairns, speaking about education. On Monday, Newspoll had Labor ahead of the Coalition 51–49 per cent.
MARKET CLOSES
The Farmers Quarter market at Maroochydore’s Big Top shopping centre has closed. Founder Shane Stanley made the announcement last Friday, stating that an inability to consistently secure fresh produce from local suppliers along with a desire to focus on his Noosa and Kawana farmers markets were the reasons. “Unfortunately a number of factors have coincided to prevent the markets from operating successfully and at the end of the day, I made the call to cease the markets. I’ve had a lot of support from local farmers, producers and local shoppers, but it just wasn’t enough to make it a success.”

CASTING A COLOURFUL SPELL
Before Yuki Cheetham became an artist who creates exceptionally vibrant watercolour paintings, she was a magician. Words Leigh Robshaw
Y
uki Cheetham’s mother loved unusual names. Yuki means snow flower or snowflake in Japanese, and when you learn about the Cotton Tree artist’s life, the name is a perfect fit. “No two snowflakes are the same, Cheetham says. “They’re all individual, which is an incredible thing. They come directly from the sky, they’re there and bang, they’re gone. So my name means pure and individual. Individual is a word that describes both Cheetham and her art, which is as varied in style as it is in colour. She achieves a stunning depth and saturation using watercolour paints and portrays all manner of subjects, many derived from her travels through 40 countries. She favours anthropomorphised animals – like a crocodile wearing a bowler hat and playing a violin, and a giraffe curving its body into the shape of a dancer. Her work has won a string of art prizes around the country, including the People’s Choice award at the Immanuel Lutheran Arts Festival in 2014. This year, she has been chosen as the artist in focus. “To be the artist in focus is considered quite prestigious on the Sunshine Coast, says festival convener, Melissa Evans. “To be selected they have to have been attending the festival for quite a few years and should have won a prize. She’s got an incredible range; you never know what she’s going to come up with each year. She’s always popular and sells a lot of work. “People ask me why I don’t use oils or acrylics,
Cheetham says. “I’ve suffered from asthma my whole life and watercolour paints have no smell and don’t affect my asthma, but it’s the hardest medium to work in. To get my colours I have to use a special technique. Cheetham was a chronic asthmatic as a child and couldn’t run around as much as other kids, so she took solace in drawing and painting. “My mother used to buy me good quality paints, paper
and brushes for birthday presents and Christmas presents, she recalls fondly. Cheetham showed an early talent for art, but she didn’t devote herself to it until later in life. First, she was a magician, living and working in 14 countries from the ages of 18 to 28 with an Australian friend. “We had the fastest timing in the world for one of Houdini’s biggest illusions, she says. “We were nice looking young Australian ladies with beautiful costumes and we got booked in five-star hotels and casinos. After her career in show biz, Cheetham worked at the University of NSW in public affairs and development while she nursed her sick mother, who lived to 97. Trying to juggle work, her mother and art was difficult. “I really loved my mother, I wanted to give her quality time, Cheetham says. “She was one of the greatest mentors of my life; she was a fabulous person. Cheetham moved to Cotton Tree in 2004, where she now paints full-time and teaches art classes on Tuesdays. “My students learn so much about how to apply colour. When you learn about colour and look at a tree, you see colours you’ve never seen before. Your whole world opens up and you’re never bored. Your love of nature just blooms. Cheetham will exhibit 12 works at the Immanuel Arts Festival from May 27 to 29. Now in its 36th year, it’s the biggest art show on the Sunshine Coast, with 200 artists exhibiting between 1000 and 2000 pieces of art.

TRAVEL
HEAD FOR THE HILLS Far from the beach scenes of the south, Chiang Mai offers a soul-soothing taste of Thailand. By Katie Wright
M
ost people heading to Thailand usually arrive in Bangkok and promptly board a plane south in search of sandy shores and blue seas. But just an hour’s flight north of the capital is an exciting city-break destination worth seeking out. Once the heart of the ancient Lanna kingdom, Chiang Mai is home to a mix of stunning mountainous scenery, historic sights and tasty cuisine. The square, walled old town is packed with temples or ‘wats’, but the most impressive one of all is found at the end of an incredibly snaky drive up a neighbouring hillside, followed by a short, steep funicular ride. Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep was built here because it’s believed this is where a white elephant carrying some of Buddha’s ashes chose to stop some 600 years ago. I climb the 300-plus steps of the temple’s Naga stairway, although sadly I’m unable to test the legend that if a betrothed couple walk up the stairs
silently together and count the same number of steps, their love will last forever. Against a backdrop of buzzing cicadas, the wat’s hilltop complex echoes with the clanging of bells – rung for good luck – that surround the ornate golden-roofed main temple. Back at sea-level, the old town is small enough to walk around, but for journeys further afield, you’ve got to try Chiang Mai’s unique method of transport – the bright red songthaew trucks that seat about 10 across two rows. Flag one down and, if it’s already got passengers, see if they’re going in the right direction, then barter until you’re happy with the price. Most journeys shouldn’t cost more than 20 baht per person (less than a dollar). Thailand’s famous tuktuks are slightly more expensive, but careering wildly through the streets on these surprisingly speedy three-wheelers is a whole lot of fun and should be experienced at least once.
FREE AUTO
Landscape of two pagodas, Chiang Mai, Thailand It’s a tuktuk that delivers me to a bend on the Ping river, where the city’s best nightlife is said to be found. The Good View and Riverside bars are where young Chiang Maians head to let off steam and sink a few Chang beers while dancing to live music, but for something a little more sedate, Deck 1 offers cocktails on a pretty terrace overlooking the river. For late-night eats, you’re never far from a street-side vendor, and you may be relieved to learn that northern provincial food tends to be a little less spicy than other regions. But, as with everything in this vibrant city, it’s no less flavoursome.
WHERE TO EAT People tend to eat early in Thailand, with kitchens commonly closing not long after 9pm, but street-food stalls can be found around the clock.
WHAT TO DO Chiang Mai’s night bazaar is a shopaholic’s dream, but the best bargains can be found at the weekend market, which starts at the Tha Phae Gate and runs one kilometre down Ratchadamnoen Road.

POTENTIALLY HABITABLE PLANETS FOUND An international group of scientists has discovered three Earth-like planets orbiting an ultra-cool dwarf star only 40 light-years from our world, the European Southern Observatory has announced. Astronomers using the TRAPPIST telescope at the ESO’s La Silla Observatory in Chile found their view of the star was obscured at regular intervals, meaning that objects were passing between the star and the Earth. Dubbed TRAPPIST-1, the ultra-cool red dwarf is located in the constellation of Aquarius. While stars of that type are very common in the Milky Way, this is the first time one of them has been found to have planets. Several giant telescopes currently under construction are expected to enable astronomers to make a detailed study of the planets and their atmosphere in search of indicators pointing to the presence of water. The makeup magic behind Zoe’s Met gala look US actor Zoe Saldana had the wow-factor at the recent Met Gala in New York, wearing a peacock-inspired Dolce & Gabbana gown, complemented by a luminous, chromatic makeup look, created by Vera Steimberg using Charlotte Tilbury products. Her makeup was kept subtle so as not to detract from her incredible dress. Here’s how to recreate the look: 1. Prep the skin with Magic Eye Rescue, Charlotte’s Magic Cream and Wonderglow to create a flawless, soft focus canvas. 2. Apply Light Wonder Shade 10 with a foundation brush for a natural, dewy complexion. 3. Apply Eyes to Mesmerise in Mona Lisa and Jean across the lids and lower lashes. Next, line the upper and lower lash line with the Colour Chameleon Eyeshadow Pencil in Bronzed Garnet. Use The Feline Flick to line the upper lid and finish with Full Fat Lashes. 4. Highlight with the Filmstar Bronze & Glow. 5. Line the lips with Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillowtalk and fill with K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Lipstick in Hepburn Honey. 6. To complete the look, apply Supermodel Body (pictured left) to ar arms and décolletage for a slimming shimmer.
GET ALL STEAMY Harness the power of steam combined with heat to straighten your hair with VS Sassoon Goddess Ultimate. It gives ultra-straight styling that lasts for days by opening up the hair cuticles and infusing moisture into them before the straightener seals them, polishing and protecting the hair at the same time. The steam relaxes, hydrates and nourishes your hair and also makes it resistant to humidity, meaning a frizz-free, shiny, soft-to-the-touch, long-lasting finish, $142.95 from department stores and electrical appliance stores.
MULTIPLE CHOICE MASCARA Whether you want longer, thicker, fuller or more defined lashes, five new Revlon Mascaras were released earlier this year that deal with your every lash wish. The most popular are the All-in-one (which has a tiny brush that takes a little getting used to) and the Super Length, which really does make your lashes look longer. They’re currently $21.95 at Myer and you get a gift with your purchase.
Matte trick Matte lipstick looks s, fantastic in bright colours, ks but as matte lipstick lacks shine it can easily look chalky. Opt for a creamy formula like Savvy Long Lasting Matte Lipstick, which gives you high colour saturation withoutt shine and is super matte without looking dry, $6.99 from Priceline.

MY LIFE
DON’T BE DUPED James Colquhoun from Food Matters shares seven major supermarket traps to avoid.
H
ow often do you walk into a supermarket to pick up a few staples, only to leave $50 poorer? You’re not alone. Supermarkets are masters of food marketing. Here’s my top seven traps to avoid. Trap 1: The format formula – Retailers know most people need key staples so they cleverly place essential items along the perimeter of the store, so you’re forced into a lap of the entire supermarket. Trap 2: Specials that aren’t quite so special. Most people are hooked by signage reading ‘special’ or ‘sale’. After all, our money is hard-earned and we all love a bargain, right? Buyer beware – when you read the fine print, you may be saving a mere few cents on that purchase. Trap 3: Labelling lies. Products that read ‘light’ may not be actually light in fat or salt – food manufacturers can justify this claim by saying that the product is ‘light’ in colour.
Trap 4: Product placement. Food companies spend big on ensuring their products are displayed at deluxe viewing locations – around eye level height – but those products aren’t necessarily the healthiest or cheapest option. Trap 5: FoMO. Supermarkets tap into Fear Of Missing Out with ‘limited time’ specials and offers. TRAP 6: Impulse buys. Grocery stores don’t display that gleaming row of confectionary at the checkout because they want you to be healthier. They know once you’ve done your shopping, an extra goodie doesn’t seem like a big expense. TRAP 7: Suggestive coupling. What goes with best with pasta? Well, the answer to that is usually sitting beside it on the shelf. Unless your answer was wine! Find out more at foodmatters.com.au.
Could Depression, Anxiety or Fear be caused by a Genetic Disorder affecting 40% of Australians? Is your family at risk? Anxiety, shyness, or fear may be common personality traits, though for some it occurs alongside other symptoms such as high stress levels, anger, poor memory and depression, and can be a lifelong struggle. Preferring small groups of close friends rather than large social groups, poor dream recall, susceptibility to allergies, fatigue, or poor sugar metabolism, can all be symptoms of a genetic disorder, which is on the rise in Australia. Affecting up to 40% of people, it can lead to much larger problems, including a serious risk of developing addictions, alcoholism, severe depression, or psychiatric disorders. Pyroluria causes you to be genetically unable to absorb key nutrients necessary for production of brain chemicals for mood, digestion, hormone production, and to fight infections. A cascade effect toward ill health eventually develops creating emotional stress, producing cortisol and inflammation throughout the body and digestive tract. Poor digestion follows creating food sensitivities, and allowing bacterial infections to invade.
A cascade effect toward depression and ill health eventually develops. Fatigue, weight gain, fluid retention, hormone imbalance, depression and anxiety, are typical symptoms of food sensitivity, creating a secondary layer of mood effects. Further deficiencies then develop leading to fatigue. Without these very important nutrients, the immune system becomes compromised, causing colds, virus, and bacterial infections, some known for creating further symptoms of depression and anxiety. The collateral damage can be vast, creating a decline into ill health and a depressive state, seemingly unsolvable. Pyroluria is simple to treat, with a rapid response time, though most people go undiagnosed. Sufferers respond poorly to common anti-depressants, knowing that this condition affects you or your family is very important, and can be diagnosed with pathology testing. Treating Pyroluria allows the body to repair to then successfully address stress hormones, bacterial infections, and food sensitivities, bringing your health back to its optimum state allowing you a bright healthy future, free of the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Visit www.advancedwellness.com.au and take a simple quiz online to identify if you may be at risk. The right diagnosis and investigation into your health is the key to finding happiness and balance in your life for you and your family. Phone the Advanced Wellness & Behavioural Centre on 5443 1987 for a free half hour consultation to further discuss your health concerns.

W
e have the scurvy spreading in our house. Not the dreaded winter flu. The scurvy is the sea of little Matchbox cars that seem to multiply after midnight. The little booby traps lurk in the shadows for me and wait patiently until I stomp down on them, trying to race after a toddler or running to answer my phone. The solid little blighters wait for me the middle of the night when I cannot see what land missiles are on our floor and send me sprawling across the hallway. My kids will probably think it is funny to mount a Matchbox car on my tombstone. It will read: ‘Here Sami lies. An average mum. A terrible cook. A worse driver. But an Olympic champion at picking up Matchbox cars.’ And yet in the broad daylight when it is time to actually play cars with them, I cannot seem to find them. We have some perfect friends who have one outside rug and that’s where the toy cars are played with in the day. There is one empty bucket (without a lid) where apparently at night the toddlers pack up the cars and then the perfect family has their perfect dinner and go to their perfect beds. I have spent far too much time thinking about the perfect family’s system. How do they wrangle the cars into staying in the one spot? I find cars
in the washing machine, in the shower and in the sand pit. I even found one in the oven once. It brings new meaning to Hot Wheels. The perfect family’s wife tried to make chit-chat with me the day I visited by talking about elections and organic fruit and vegetables. It was all white noise. There were bigger issues to solve here. My mind was on the main game: how the heck do they manage to keep the cars on the one rug? Maybe their children are OCD? Maybe they beat their offspring? I was snapped out of my chain of thought when my children ran screaming through the perfect house towards the perfect pool armed with several Matchbox cars. An article from The Daily Mail states we spend 10 minutes every day rummaging for lost items, from books and keys to the car to our mobile phones. The article was about a study done for an insurance firm and showed we lose on average nine items every day, which amounts to nearly 200,000 in our lifetime. Think about that. Actually don’t. You will go insane. The same survey showed a total of 3680 hours or 153 days is spent searching for stuff. Anyway, I have a new nemesis in the house: Lego. Do you know how painful those tiny little plastic bits are when you stand on a piece? I wonder how the perfect family stores its Lego?

N
ow the federal election has been called, there’s one outcome we will almost certainly unite in rejoicing. We are finally going to see the back of Clive Palmer. And hallelujah to that. Looking back over the Clive Palmer chronicles and evaluating the reputational damage the Member for Fairfax has caused us over the past five years, one gets a renewed appreciation of the high cost of having someone totally disingenuous in public office. We’ve seen how a naïve electorate (coupled with a completely misunderstood preferential voting system) can be manipulated with money and the media. Professor Clive Palmer as he was first known to us, burst onto the Sunshine Coast scene with pizzazz. The learned professor whipped the regional tourism industry into a frenzy with grand promises of his Coolum resort’s imminent renaissance. Palmer went on to sack those silly Hyatt people who clearly had no idea about running hotels and built a ridiculous third-rate dinosaur theme park. Is this the point we all should have realised something was wrong? The walking contradiction that is Clive Palmer cut over 400 tourism jobs in Coolum at a time when the town needed all the help it could get. Not only did news stories of plastic dinosaurs circulate
around the world, making our region a laughing stock, but Palmer’s bullying tactics over promoting the Titanic II at the PGA Golf Championships did irreparable reputational damage to our brand. I attended an Institute of Company Directors breakfast some years back at Palmer Resort, where Clive waxed lyrical about his new ship building enterprise. We sat and listened to one of the most far-fetched stories you could imagine. And as Clive exited stage left to jump into a helicopter, many sat in awe of this larger than life celebrity billionaire. Was this guy for real? Clive is a master manipulator of the media. He has the uncanny knack of diverting any line of questioning away from serious issues and creating smoke screens with generalisations and unsubstantiated accusations. With a slew of job losses and scandals surrounding him, surely there will be a day of reckoning where he gets his comeuppance. Palmer has misled, and in my opinion, deliberately deceived the people of the Sunshine Coast. He has failed to use his position as a crossbencher to benefit the region and in truth, his promises to advance the Sunshine Coast have been hollow. Hopefully we’ve learnt a valuable lesson. If someone seems too good to be true, they probably are. Bye bye Clive. Bye bye.

UNIVERSITY 20TH ANNIVERSARY
THE MINDS THAT BUILT USC
In the mid-1990s, a handful of people on the Sunshine Coast were tasked with constructing Australia’s first greenfield university campus since 1971. Now celebrating its 20-year anniversary, the University of the Sunshine Coast has more than 23 buildings on its flora and fauna reserve.
O
ne of many savvy decisions in the early days of the University of the Sunshine Coast was expenditure on a campus master plan by Mitchell/Giurgola and Thorp Architects, a Canberra-based company that had designed Australia’s new Parliament House in the 1980s. Its guidance over the next two decades would help put the USC campus on the international map. For company partner Hal Guida, the USC job was a gift. “In our practice in the United States, we’d done buildings at quite a few universities. Senior partner Romaldo Giurgola had been the chair of the school of architecture at Columbia University (New York City) in 1965 and I’d taught at Temple University (Philadelphia), so we jumped at university projects,” says Guida, who had a Master of Architecture in Urban Design from the University of California at Los Angeles. “To be able to plan a new university, to think about how you build a new one in such a beautiful place as the Sunshine Coast, what could be more attractive?
“We took a small team to initiate the process by spending a week on the Coast, visiting the site every day at different times,” he said. “On the first day we took a long walk with environmental scientists who we had selected to advise us on environmentally responsible design and development. Our primary goal was to prepare a master plan that was right for this place: this specific site, the environment and the social culture of the Sunshine Coast.” Now looking back on 40 years of international experience, Mr Guida says USC was such a satisfying project that he kept returning, at least every five years, to assist master plan revisions. “We were hoping for what has evolved – a closelyaligned, rich variety of buildings making for a visually stimulating and interesting interplay as you move through the campus,” he says. “The University has done a great job selecting different architects so there is a consistent character but with different expressions based around the same thing – living on the Sunshine Coast. That was the
HEARING LOSS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED A TINY HEARING AID THAT CAN The world’s first and only 100% invisible, 24/7 wearable, sweat-proof, shower-proof, for-months-at-a-time hearing device. University of the Sunshine Coast circa 1995 intention of the master plan – not to freeze design or say ‘only use red brick’.” The master plan drew inspiration from Thomas Jefferson’s visionary development of the University of Virginia in the US in the 1800s. Jefferson was closely involved in its linear design – a central green space bordered by parallel buildings and symbolically focused on a library rotunda at one end. Professor Paul Thomas, who inspected the University of Virginia on the recommendation of Hal Guida, admired the way that university was constructed to relate to its community of scholars. “USC, however, also wanted to open itself to the wider community, so we planned our primary spine – two rows of buildings facing a lawn in the middle – to open at both ends,” he says. “This retained the human dimension, where a person at a window in one building could recognise a person outside the opposite building across the lawn, as well as the environmental qualities of the area, allowing the movement of kangaroos, for example, down to a lake and the adjoining Mooloolah River National Park.” “Architecture was an extremely
important decision point in USC’s history,” Professor Thomas recalled. “From when I became planning president in March 1994, I had in my mind that we had to become a university, not a college or an outlying campus of QUT, and we had to look like a university.” Urged by state bureaucrats to inspect a small regional campus for ideas, he was underwhelmed. “It was all bricks and mortar and all the buildings were the same and I found it utterly boring. We needed buildings of monumental scale to signal that this was a university.” But with the first students expected to walk on to campus at the start of 1996, Thomas was realistic enough to realise that lack of time and funding ruled out sandstone edifices. Instead, the nod to tradition became big colonnades (pillars) on the first building, followed by an evolution of novel, modern buildings based on environmental sustainability. USC’s 20-year celebration book, Visions, is a coffee table book featuring hundreds of people connected to the University over two decades. Written by Julie Schomberg, it retails for $24.95 at the Co-op Bookshop, usc@coop.com.au.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE
NOT SO SUPER BUDGET Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
T
he 2016 Federal Budget was perhaps the most significant for retirees, and those seeking to accumulate wealth for retirement, in the past decade. Major changes to superannuation are outlined below: The cap for concessional (tax deductible) contributions to super has been reduced to $25,000 regardless of age (it was $30,000 for those under 50 and $35,000 for those over 50). This measure is short sighted and will not allow the average worker to build a large enough super balance for retirement, ultimately leading to further reliance on the age pension. New ‘catch up’ provisions allow contributions above the concessional cap if it has not been utilised in previous
years, but it is limited to those with super balances less than $500,000. Only cap amounts unused from July 2017 can be carried forward for up to five years on a rolling basis. While this goes some way towards alleviating a shortfall in super balances arising from the change above, it does not go far enough. Some of the changes that seem fair are: • An additional 15 per cent tax on super contributions for those who earn over $250,000 (previously $300,000), • It will no longer be necessary to satisfy the work test to make contributions between the ages of 65 to 74, including spouse contributions • Tax deductions will be able to be claimed for personal contributions regardless of employment status, removing what is known as the 10% rule One of the major announcements made was that there will be a cap on transfer to pension of $1.6 million. Pension earnings will not be taxed, no matter how large, and growth past the
$1.6million limit is allowed once the pension is commenced. This will apply from July 1, 2017 and be retrospective. This means that any pension balances above the limit on July 1 next year will either have to be rolled back to accumulation, or withdrawn from super. This is an understandable move by a government which wants to provide tax concessions to assist in providing a replacement income stream to the age pension, but not fund unlimited tax free income for the wealthy. Another major change is that transition to retirement earnings streams (TtR’s) will be taxed on income at 15 per cent while it is deemed to be a TtR. This will make the strategy a lot less attractive, and they will really only be useful for their original intended purpose – to supplement the income of someone who decides to work less, possibly extending their working life. Finally, the concept of a lifetime cap of $500,000 on non-concessional contributions (NCC’s) has been introduced. This will apply from budget
night and all NCC’s since July 1, 2007 will be counted. This will seriously reduce the effectiveness of a cash out and recontribution strategy for those with larger balances. My view is this is a retro step, and again it will limit the ability to build a superannuation balance large enough to fund retirement. There were many more changes, some affecting super and some not. For those seeking to accumulate wealth, it’s now a lot more difficult. We’re in a lower return environment and the upshot of it all will mean potential retirees will be working harder for longer to accumulate sufficient wealth to become a selffunded retiree. Sunshine Coast celebrity chef Matt Golinski shares his recipe of red papaya, coconut yoghurt and macadamia crumble with My Weekly Preview readers. “I recently bought a tub of Coyo Coconut Yoghurt from the (IGA Marketplace) supermarket and now I’m hooked,’’ he says. “The combination of creamy coconut, slightly sweetened red papaya and a crunchy macadamia and ginger topping is equally perfect as a decadent breakfast or a fancy dessert. Diced mangoes or peaches would be a delicious alternative to papaya.’’ All ingredients are available from IGA Marketplace Wises Road.

Racegoers are preparing to dress in their finest to vie it out in the Fashion on the Fields competitions. Frivolity, fillies and fashion aside, the Hot 91.1 Ladies Oaks Day will also raise much needed funds for the not-for-profit organisation STEPS Charity, which runs programs to assist those who are disadvantaged and living in our community.

Duos are common enough in the musical world, but sibling duos are a rare thing. Slava and Leonard Grigoryan are that rare thing. The pair has toured extensively throughout Australia and
overseas: to Europe, the United States, Britain, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East. This month they will perform in Caloundra. The Grigoryan Brothers are considered to be one of Australia's finest guitar duos, performing much of the instrument's standard classical repertoire and genres including Latin, jazz, folk and contemporary music. They will perform at The Events Centre on May 19. Tickets are $42 for adults and $20 for children. Visit theeventscentre.com.au.

BETTER LATE THAN NEVER Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the MERCEDES-BENZ GLC220
T
here’s something to be said for arriving fashionably late. Particularly when you want to make a grand entrance to a high-class gathering. Mercedes-Benz has managed to do just that with its new mid-sized SUV, known as the GLC. It makes its Australian debut more
than a decade behind its arch-rival from BMW – the very successful X3 – and a handful of years behind the equallysuccessful Audi Q5. The X3 is even into its second generation now. Rare, indeed, that Mercedes would lag so far behind its arch-rivals in any area –let alone the booming SUV segment - but in the case of the GLC we
suspect it’s been well worth the wait. Benz claims its new baby sets new benchmarks in the class, not least for driver assistance systems, aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. And it’s hard to argue. The competition in this crowded premium SUV segment has recently been joined by Porsche, with its Q5-sized Macan, as well as Volvo’s familiar XC60,
the Range Rover Evoque and, more recently, the Lexus NX. Into that mix, then, comes the GLC, filling something of a missing link in the German maker’s armory between the very successful ML Class (now known, in the new Benz lexicon, as the GLE) and the smaller, more recently-released GLA. Both of those models have enjoyed stellar success in the Australian market, so it’s no surprise that Benz has now offered up the GLC. What is a surprise is that it’s taken so long. Benz has fielded a contender in this category in overseas markets – called the GLK – although Australian buyers will probably be glad they waited. This one is better than its predecessor in just about every way. Benz has made the GLC lighter, better equipped, quicker, more fuelefficient and more luxurious than the GLK. It’s also bigger inside and out and, just for good measure, is the first Mercedes to debut the marque’s new nine-speed automatic transmission. We can expect to see that transmission rolled out in all manner of other models before too long, including the all-new E-Class executive saloon due continued over>

MOTORING
<from previous page shortly, such is its smoothness and efficiency . The GLC designation reflects Benz’s new strategy that SUV models should bear similar names to their closest sedan relatives. In this case, that means the GLC is most closely related to the fabulous C-Class sedan that has taken the Australian market and car awards by storm. And the similarities are inescapable. The GLC’s interior is almost a carbon copy of the C-Class cockpit – same excellent instrument panel, same classy finishes across the dash; same turbinestyle vents, same high-quality switchgear and same beautiful sweep of wood, leather and brushed chrome through the plush centre console. It feels every bit the luxury car, but with a higher, more commanding view of the road. That’s a powerful combination which is likely to prove irresistible to many potential female buyers. Especially at the price – which starts from $64,500 (plus onroad costs). The GLC’s noise suppression and smoothness of ride is also the equal of the C-Class, which is quite an achievement for a vehicle still capable of going off road (even if it falls short of a
true bush-basher). We tested the entry-level model – the turbo-diesel GLC220 which thoroughly impressed with its quietness and linear power. With a pricetag of $64,500 plus onroads it makes a compelling case. It certainly looks and drives nothing like an “entry level” model, thanks to standard equipment including handsome 19-inch alloys, electric tailgate, active parking assistant, 360-degree parking camera, keyless start and LED lighting. Driver assistance systems include collision prevention assist, blind-spot warnings, cross-traffic assist and active lane-keeping assist. There are also nine
airbags, while higher-spec models enjoy radar-guided Distronic cruise control. Step up to the mid-range GLC250, powered by a turbocharged two-litre petrol engine, and additional goodies include 20-inch wheels, full leather upholstry, driver assistance package and privacy glass. Luggage space is a capacious 580 litres, expanding to 1600 litres with the rear seats folded flat. The GLC sits in an incredibly competitive part of the market and hits the sweet spot for well-heeled young families looking for an activity vehicle. It probably shades the arch-rival BMW X3 in the refinement and luxury stakes, but trails the Beemer (at least in the case of our test vehicle) in outright dynamic performance. Not surprisingly, the Audi Q5 sits somewhere in between while an outside threat is Lexus’ impressive NX. The Benz feels the most up-to-date and cutting-edge of those three Euro competitors. Not surprisingly, I guess, considering its late arrival. But better late than never.
MERCEDES-BENZ GLC220 HOW BIG? Based upon the running gear of the C-Class sedan, it’s large enough to comfortably accommodate full-sized adults front and back. Luggage space is also generous – yet it feels nimble in city traffic. HOW FAST? Our entry-level test machine reaches the speed limit in a leisurely 8.3 seconds but has plenty of overtaking punch. The turbocharged GLC250 is about a second quicker. HOW THIRSTY? All three models are a frugal bunch, with the two turbo-diesel variants sipping about 5.6L/100km and the petrol version a little thirstier at 7.2L/100km. HOW MUCH? Prices start at $64,500 plus onroad costs – with the flagship model sneaking in under $70k. But like all Europeans, ticking a few options boxes inflates the price quickly.

BUILDING APPROVALS ENCOURAGING The steep rise in building approvals in the first quarter of 2016 bodes well for the Sunshine Coast development sector.
T
he Sunshine Coast’s development sector is on track to set a new record, with figures for the third quarter of the 2015/2016 financial year indicating that development is continuing to grow. The region’s landscape will continue to change and grow, with $256 million of building approvals issued during the January to March 2016 quarter. This contributes to the $988 million total for the financial year to date and represents a 14 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2014/2015. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the year is set to be the busiest yet. “This quarter’s 14 per cent growth in building approvals is especially encouraging considering the January to March quarter is usually a development slow time due to the close of the calendar year and peak holiday time.’’ In the January–March 2016 quarter, $160 million worth of new dwellings were approved, $26 million of other buildings (such as commercial or manufacturing buildings), and $20
“As well as creating temporary construction opportunities, the Bli Bli development will provide retail and employment opportunities, as well as access to medical services. “The number of lot reconfiguration applications received by council was lower this quarter than in the previous quarter. However, the number of lots created through the plan sealing process increased by 20 per cent.’’
FAST FACTS: million of additions and alterations. Building approvals issued across the Coast in the first quarter of this year include a $14 million aged care facility in Twin Waters, $6 million water treatment plant in Montville, $3.7 million industrial building in Bells Creek and $1.4 million refurbishment of Caloundra Private Hospital. In addition, Sunshine Coast Council is focused on the development of the Bokarina Beach development, which is located along Nicklin Way. If it comes to fruition, the project will include
remax.com.au
291 detached homes, 829 multiple dwelling units, commercial, retail and tourism space. “Council has recommended State Government approval of the Bokarina Beach Master Plan, subject to conditions,’’ Jamieson says. “Once complete, the 30-hectare site will provide homes, services and facilities for thousands of residents and visitors. “Similarly, the $20 million Bli Bli development approved in March will transform the town.
Key development indicators for the January to March 2016 quarter include $256 million of building approvals including: • $160 million approved new dwellings – an eight per cent increase from the same quarter in 2015 • $26 million approved other buildings – a seven per cent increase from the same quarter in 2015 • $20 million approved additions and alterations – an 82 per cent increase from the same quarter in 2015 • In addition, 212 Operational Works Applications – 21 per cent up on the same quarter in 2015 • 71 Material Change of Use Applications – 18 per cent up on the same quarter in 2015.

SURF REPORT
Where’s winter? The water is still beautiful and the temp has been spot on! That said I was paddling passed a very serious guy in his full length steamer last weekend… man he looked hot… not in a good way either. But I am sure it will start changing, maybe. Now this weekend looks like small waves so grab your Mal and go for some sliders. I am hearing of a few decent banks around but they are few and far between so get what you can. Stop Press. Has everyone seen the next lot of footage on KS wave pool with Steph Gilmore and a few pros? OMG. I am assuming they will be able to scale up so you could get fully stand up barrels. Get on line. Pretty bloody impressive.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are working along the yabby banks around Goat and Channel Island. Cod, trevally and jacks are taking live bait around the motorway bridge pylons. Flathead are picking up trolled lures around the Bli Bli sand banks. Mud crabs are still around in numbers, but a percentage are female and undersize, so please return them. SURF: Pincushion is returning bream on mullet fillet on the rising night tide and there are quite a few tailor right on sunrise using slugs (shiny chrome lures) and pillies. You can find dart and whiting along both Maroochy and Mudjimba beaches with pippies and fowl gut the best bait. OFFSHORE: A great week has been had with plenty of action from Old Woman Island to Pt Cartwright where mackerel, tuna and mac-tuna are snapping up small baits, lures and well presented flies. Mixed reef fish are taking squid and pillies from Murphy’s to Wide Caloundra after berleying. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning saratoga right up in the sticks with golden perch, bass and jew to be found below the dam wall. Most of our local impoundments are working well down near their weirs, with rattling lures and spinner baits producing the best sizes. Somerset Dam is always worth the trip for quality fish and red claw are plentiful, so don’t forget you red claw traps.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You can get so caught up in the busyness of daily life that you neglect those closest to you. This week’s full moon falls in your relationship zone, so aim to spend quality time with family and friends. Make sure you listen closely to what they have to say.
CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Mercury’s still reversing, so avoid posting anything online that’s or controversial. With the full moon activating your job zone, chances are you’ll be working overtime this week. Pace yourself, otherwise you’ll suffer from a stress-related headache.
LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Lions love to go at life with plenty of power and passion. But with Mercury, Mars and Saturn all in retro mode, the gas has temporarily been taken out of your tank. You want to charge ahead but your cat style has been severely curtailed.
VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Mercury is still retrograde, so avoid slipping into “Very-Stressed Virgo Mode”! Try to worry less and focus more, as you complete one task at a time, before moving on to the next project. The full moon urges you to re-establish family connections.
LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] The full moon fires up your curiosity and wanderlust but it’s not a particularly good week to try to solve a major problem or travel, as the planets play games with your itinerary, scramble your communication antennae or muddle your mind.
SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Scorpios are usually astute money-managers. However, with Mars and Saturn both reversing through your money zone, if you’re not careful your bank balance could take a backward step. Self-indulgence and impulse buys are also a potential problem.
SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Sagittarians thrive on adrenalin but, with Mars and Saturn both reversing through your sign, passion must be balanced with plenty of patience. Saturday night’s Sagittarian full moon magnifies your positive traits – and your negative ones. So strive to be generous.
CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] When it comes to a child, friend or cherished dream, it may feel as if it’s one step forwards and two steps back. Don’t lose heart Capricorn. Relationships will slowly improve (and dreams will gradually manifest) if you are patient and give them a chance.
AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Many Aquarians are feeling frustrated and are keen to break free from rules. But, if you really want to enjoy the long-term rewards, then you’ll have to play by the short-term rules. Plus, when it comes to your goals there is no substitute for thorough preparation.
PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Are you bored to bits with your current job? Be careful what you wish for fish. With the full moon in your career zone (plus Mars and Saturn in retro mode) make sure you’re not heading off in a totally unsuitable direction – or even going backwards! Relating to others will also be tricky.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] You’re itching to jump out of cruise control as the fiery full moon encourages you to visualise your aspirations for the future. But it’s not the week to act on them. You need to plan each step thoroughly, before you eventually take an amazing dream and spin it into reality.

THE LAST WORD
LIFE, THE UNIVERSE AND EVERYTHING Richard O’Leary is reading up on physics in the hope his football team is winning in a parallel universe.
I
t’s been a tad depressing being a Parramatta Eels supporter for the last few weeks (decades could just as easily be substituted). But I find when I get a little down over accusations of cheating, points stripped, and season killed – it’s good to get a little perspective. And I’ve found the perfect way to do just that – reading books about physics – the study of matter and its motion through space and time. It may sound counter-intuitive considering how heavy it sounds, but I’ve found The Big Questions – Physics remarkably adept at lightening my mood. Now I must say before I go too much further, this book is basically a Physics for Dummies – an equation is harder to find than the God particle (a little physics reference there). Despite that, it deals with some big issues, the biggest really, and you just
can’t help but feel that the fate of your footy team is just not in the same ever expanding universe. My favourite chapter is “Do we live in a simulation?”, which tries to explain how the universe is so perfect for us – in some ways, nearly too perfect. If gravity had been infinitesimally weaker or stronger, the universe wouldn’t be around. With the former it would never have never formed, and with the latter it would have imploded. How small are we talking? Well if the density of matter in the universe at one second past the Big Bang had been greater or less by one in a million billion we wouldn’t be here. Pretty sobering isn’t it? But as it turns out, the gravitational push and pull is just right. This is just one of many ‘coincidences’ that has some scientists thinking the universe sounds like a fix – or as British astronomer Fred Hoyle
said, it looks like ‘a put-up job’. So, they have come up with three possible scenarios. 1. Of course all these forces are just right, or we wouldn’t be around to be having this discussion. Which opens the door to the possibility of other universes. 2. A supernatural designer – God, or 3.
