OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

lbert Einstein once said, “Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.” If that’s true – and who am I to argue with Einstein – then our Sunshine Coast artists are in for quite a ride. In the first of our two-part series on creativity on the Coast, this week’s cover story takes a look at the thriving art scene in this region. Also this week, you get to meet a local inventor who says we should all live in a bubble, have a quick chat with a Sunshine Coast woman who has helped save hundreds of marine creatures, travel to Vietnam for the most relaxing week of your life and test drive the new Audi TT-S roadster. Also this week, you’ll get all the news and views from around the region, top tips on technology, beauty and life, what’s hot in fashion, which stars have been out and about, and plenty of property. Enjoy, and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

OCEAN DEFENDER

Emily Thomas, SEA LIFE Mooloolaba’s Animal Health Manager, is encouraging the Sunshine Coast to protect our coastal environment ahead of World Turtle Day on Monday May 23. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

encapsulates everything I love – family, beach, watersports, a beautiful environment and a relaxed lifestyle.

Alexandra Headlands – it’s a beautiful part of the world.

FIRST JOB?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Working in a family-owned packaging and stationery supply business, but I quickly moved on to a small French cafe. I started my career at SEA LIFE Mooloolaba (formerly UnderWater World) almost 25 years ago. I worked in many areas of the aquarium, but my true passion was the rescue and rehabilitation of marine animals, which led me to complete a Cert IIII in Veterinary Nursing.

We need to encourage everyone to pick up their rubbish and bin it. I cannot stress enough the importance of putting rubbish in the bin and keeping our waterways free of debris. Littering and pollution increases the likelihood of floating syndrome amongst turtles, which is unfortunately the most common injury we see. Every year, thousands of sea turtles ingest or become entangled in debris items, resulting in painful injuries and death. We can all do our bit to reduce waste by choosing recyclable products such as aluminium and glass over plastic, and even taking reusable shopping bags to buy groceries.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’m currently completing my veterinary studies and continuing to educate, rescue and care for our turtle populations in my role as Animal Health Manager. Since joining the SEA LIFE Mooloolaba team in January 1992, I’ve been involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of more than 1,000 turtles, which is something I’m very proud of.

FAVOURITE PLACE? The beach. We have the best beaches in the world.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES…

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

My partner of 17 years and our two children, Hayley, 11, and Zoe, five.

Both of the days my children were born.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

FIRST CAR? Toyota Hilux.

FAVOURITE BOOK? Jesse Martin’s Lionheart.

FAVOURITE SONG? Anything by Pink or Rudimental.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Never give up.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? Twenty-seven years now. I spent my last few years of primary school travelling around on a yacht with my parents and two brothers. Living on a yacht cemented my love for the ocean and the creatures in it. After travelling around the country and abroad for three years and learning by correspondence, we settled in Mooloolaba where I started school. It was a huge change from living on a yacht and I knew I wanted to get back to the ocean.

8 My Weekly Preview | May 20, 2016

8.indd 1

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? Not long after we settled in Mooloolaba, a large hole in the ground started to appear in the Mooloolaba Spit area. I watched with interest as the hole continued to grow and grow. Signs were eventually put up that said, “The sharks are coming”. Enthralled by this idea, I watched as UnderWater World took shape and literally grew out of the ground. Not long after opening, I asked for a job working anywhere in the complex. I was soon rewarded and started working at the attraction in January of 1992. This cemented my love of marine animals and educating the public about the marine environment.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? The quality of life and the wonderful environment it provides to bring up our children. The Sunshine Coast

When I’m with my family.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? When I see people littering and disrespecting our beautiful environment. Everyone can make a difference with the simple step of putting rubbish in the bin. If you see rubbish, pick it up.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Talk with friends and family.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? Don’t worry about the future, it’s going to be awesome.

TEA OR COFFEE? Tea – white with one sugar.

NRL OR AFL? Both. I’m from Victoria originally, but also love NRL.

ARTERY OF THE COAST

The Sunshine Coast arts scene is booming and our region has a growing reputation as an incubator for artistic talent. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

Artist Kendall Perkins

I

t is a Thursday afternoon and Kendall Perkins has been busy. The evidence is everywhere – canvases adorn her studio and bold, bright splashes of paint bring a rich vibrancy to the room. It’s been a long day and she is covered in paint, but that does little to deter her from her busy week. In fact, she looks forward to every single day of work and why wouldn’t she when her job is something she dreamed about? A general working week for the colourful artist encompasses five, full days in her studio creating artworks that are delivered not only across Australia, but across the globe. Kendall – as she is known in art circles the world over – is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most prolific artists. In the past 25 years her work has been used in Tourism Australia campaigns and has been displayed everywhere from India to China and Korea. “Imagine being able to make a living out of your dream,’’ Kendall says of her work. “I’m living my dream every day of my life. It takes a lot of work, like any business, you’ve got to work at it; you’ve got to market it. It’s evolving, changing, I’m constantly looking at new products.’’ Global recognition aside, what excites Kendall is the growth and respect the industry continues to garner within this region. “We are blessed here with some extremely talented artists in the market,’’ she says. “Everybody went through trouble with the GFC and there were thousands of galleries that changed in 12 My Weekly Preview | May 20, 2016

Australia. I think it’s turned the corner and is going ahead again. The arts scene is booming. People are flying in here to buy art because we have the talent here. “There is such a creative nest with so many galleries… we attract artists from all over the world. We are known here as a real art hub.’’ This month, one of the Coast’s largest art festivals will be staged, featuring 250 artists. And while Kendall doesn’t exhibit at the Immanuel Arts Festival, she says events like these deserve credit as

“The arts scene is booming. People are flying in here to buy art because we have the talent here” a driving force behind the success of the industry. “I don’t tend to do a lot of school art shows,’’ she says. “But I think it helps emerging artists. It helps bring others into the region, helps circulate works and helps emerging artists into the galleries. “It’s a great way to showcase work.’’ The 36th annual Immanuel Arts Festival exhibits and sells paintings, sculpture, photography, drawings,

prints and crafts by artists of varying levels. It acts as a fundraiser for Immanuel Lutheran College, but the focus is about fostering the community, according to the school’s marketing and communications manager Fiona Christie. “It was introduced 36 years ago to support the local art scene on the Coast,’’ Christie explains. “It’s about promoting the artists and giving them an affordable space to show their work. We have opened it up to any student on the Sunshine Coast from any school also… we have been trying to encourage students (to participate) if they are an aspiring artists and if they love the arts.” Student work is displayed alongside professionals, including the three people selected by the College as feature artists for 2016. “We choose these artists based on how long they have supported the festival,’’ Christie adds. “Our artist in focus is Yuki Cheetham and our artists in residence are Victoria Atkins and Brett McIntosh. “The residence positions are hands on… they come into the college and hold workshops for the kids. They are interactive during the festival and are there working during the day and giving advice.” Someone who knows how important it is to promote the industry and artists through events such as the festival is Louise Jaeger. As the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery’s acting curator, she knows a thing or two about art, which is why she has been adopted as the festival’s gallery consultant. myweeklypreview.com.au

EVENT IN FOCUS

It’s a job to be taken seriously – Jaeger is responsible for overlooking set-up of the exhibition space, which will include more than 1000 pieces. Each piece is considered in terms of its category, media, subject, size and colour. “I believe arts festivals and prizes are extremely important to the cultural heritage of the region as they become part of a truly hands on, personal representation of our lifestyle and our influences and benefit our general wellbeing from a holistic perspective,’’ Jaeger tells My Weekly Preview. “Financially, they support the region by attracting visitors, assisting art practitioners to develop their careers and the expectation of high quality work encourages makers to work hard on their practice and that benefits all of us.” She agrees that the growth of the industry on the Sunshine Coast is something to be celebrated. “The art scene is always changing wherever you go and is a very dynamic environment. With easy access to inspiration these days through social media and the internet, art teaching and learning tools and skill sharing are developing all the time so I believe the

quantity of art being produced is increasing with all of these new opportunities. “The quality maybe has a little catching up to do, but it is wonderful to see artists and makers sharing their techniques and methods, trying new things, gathering new knowledge and developing exciting ways to teach and collaborate. “Some of the new digital technologies for example are simply amazing and skills are being shared worldwide, which is terrific. There are some new young creative minds on the Coast who have brave ideas and they need to be trusted and supported creatively and financially so as to benefit all of us.” Galleries, art prizes and festivals are opportunities for artists from all regions to extend the value of their work and to align themselves with successful projects, she says. “The Arts Festival is a huge team effort, but we need families and the Coast community to really support events like this as creative endeavours benefit all of us in the long term. Art bring us joy and understanding and is a wonderful way for artists to connect with the local community.”

CELEBRATE EARTH

Children’s activities, petal perfume making, bush critter art and wildlife shows will form part of the 37th annual Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival. Hosted by the Sunshine Coast Environment Council at Cotton Tree Park on Sunday, June 5, the family-friendly event is free. Coordinator Leah Hays says humans are the solution to a healthy world. “Our muscles are 75 per cent water and what we breathe can be found in every cell in our body. We depend on a healthy environment for our food, water, air and wellbeing.’’ The event is from 10am to 5pm.

ONE IN FIVE

The community is invited to celebrate cultural diversity at parkrun on Saturday, May 21 to support a regional Racism. It Stops with Me campaign. The event coincides with World Day for Cultural Diversity, and Sunshine Coast councillor Christian Dickson says the region has a growing multicultural population with one in every five people born overseas. “This event on the multicultural calendar will see council partnering with parkrun to take a stand against racism in our community.’’ There are five local parkrun locations: Brightwater, Golden Beach, Kawana, Nambour and Town of Seaside, which will see the community come together at 7am. For more visit parkrun.com.au.

WALLABIES TO TRAIN ON COAST AGAIN Sunshine Coast residents are being urged to keep an eye out for Wallabies of the sporting type next month. The Rugby World Cup runners-up will return with a week-long camp confirmed from May 30 to June 3. They will be based at Sunshine Coast Stadium to prepare for the three-match Cook Cup series against England, which will kick off in Brisbane on June 11. Mayor Mark Jamieson says it’s an honour to have the Qantas Wallabies back at the stadium.

SURVEY: USC RATED BEST UNI IN AUSTRALIA The University of the Sunshine Coast was last week ranked as the best public university in Australia for the overall quality of its educational experience for undergraduate students.USC also ranked as the best public university in Queensland in four of five other categories. The results of the Student Experience Surveys, which was completed in 2014–15, were published on national website QILT.

WHAT ARE YOU, A GOANNA OR A CHICKEN? Would a person have been able to outrun a prehistoric 600-kilogram goanna? Their work showed that Australia’s giant goannas, which have been extinct for about 60,000 years, would have been more interested in running away from humans than chasing them. “This new research disentangles variations in the speed, muscular power and posture of animals when they get really big and gives us an insight into the performance capabilities of long extinct animals,” Clemente says.

JETSTAR LAUNCHES ADELAIDE FLIGHTS Sunshine Coast Airport is set to become busier, with Jetstar announcing last week it will launch direct flights from Adelaide to the Coast three times a week from September. The new services come off the back of the airport’s strong growth during the past 12 months, according to deputy mayor Tim Dwyer. The services will add an additional 56,000 seats between the Sunshine Coast and Adelaide each year. Jetstar Airways Head of Commercial and Operations Improvement, Carly Povey, said direct Sunshine Coast services from Melbourne and Sydney were performing well and she is confident the new service will be well supported.

$227,580

The research into pre-term and low birth weight infants has received a $33,000 boost thanks to the Wishlist health services charity, which cemented its commitment to medical research on the Sunshine Coast with an announcement of $227,580 to fund an inaugural round of specialised scholarships. The Research Higher Degree Scholarship round was launched in 2015 and last week, four Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service staff members were announced as recipients.

SEKISUI STILL HERE

Japanese developer Sekisui House has proven its investment in the Sunshine Coast by beginning construction on its latest development ahead of schedule. The decision to move ahead with development earlier was driven by strong enquiry from buyers, said senior development manager Evan Aldridge. Earthworks have begun on the site at the Vantage estate at Coolum on the development, Serene, which will consist of 25 terrace homes.

NEW TRENDS IN BODYCARE

It’s getting chilly here, but it’s springtime in the northern hemisphere and one of the big beauty trends is pastel nails. There’s no reason why you can’t brighten up autumn and winter days with a dose of pastel prettiness on your nails:

• SPF – There’s been a marked rise in products reducing sun damage. Bring on the SPF action. • Oil aid– Oils and serums are increasingly targeting stretch marks and skin elasticity. • Skin firming – Mesotherapies, Hypoxi treatments and laser treatments are highly popular for targeting cellulite. • Clean beauty – Organic products are huge. Mukti from Mukti Organics based on the Sunshine Coast says: “Natural active ingredients effectively care for the skin on a cellular level. It would be ignorant to think that only cosmetics created by the newest technologies can achieve great results. Our bodies work in the same way as plants to fight harmful free radicals with the assistance of antioxidants, flavonoids and vitamins.”

3 GORGEOUS JESSICA CAPTIVATES CANNES US actor Jessica Chastain was the epitome of modern glamour at the premiere of Cafe Society at the Cannes Film Festival on May 11. Besides her knockout canary yellow Armani Prive mermaid gown, she scored top marks for her hair and makeup, perfectly chosen so as not to detract from the dress. She wore her famous red hair in a very on-trend style – a long bob tousled into slight waves with a side part. Her makeup featured charcoal grey smokey eyes, flushed cheeks and a rose pink matte lipstick.

Dark red shades for lips and nails have been popular this season and they can look stunning on your eyes, too. Just don’t wear them all at once. If you’re going to try a burgundy eye, go for a nude or pale pink lip and blush. Try Maybelline Color Molten Eyeshadow in Rose Haze (pictured). This liquefied powder eyeshadow is highly blendable and melts into a soft, creamy finish. The end result is subtle rather than saturated colour, $9.76 from Priceline.

MY LIFE

KATE SWEARS BY JUICING Kate Moss bounces off the walls with the amount of energy she has after a juice cleanse. The 42-year-old model has always rocked a slim physique, which she’s flaunted on the catwalk and in high-end campaigns for the likes of Chanel and Burberry. Like many fashion stars, Moss likes a good detox and insists she’s buzzes after following a liquid diet. “I juice. At least three times a year, for a week, I do a juice cleanse,” she told W magazine. “I like it. I feel amazing. And then I have so much energy. Everyone else is like, ‘Please... shhhh...’ Oh my god, I have so much energy I start bouncing off walls.” The cleanse also helps maintain Moss’ glowing complexion, even after a night out partying alongside fellow A-listers. A NO-NONSENSE WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM Experts can’t agree on the best way to lose weight, so Australian businessman Mark Cupples took matters into his own hands. He used his business brain to research weight loss and came up with a program that enabled him to lose 30 kilos. In his book, Slim Businez, he shares his commonsense approach to weight loss:

• 80 per cent of weight loss comes from the first 20 per cent of your efforts. • Eat old-fashioned foods like meat, butter, traditional oils, cheese, fruit and vegetables. • Controlled carbohydrate eating and exercise is the best way to lose weight. • Exercise makes everything happen faster. Start with walking. • Weigh in daily. • The most advertising dollars are spent on the foods that make you fatter faster.

THIS TOO SHALL PASS Jodi Chapman shares some strategies to help you cope when life throws you for a six.

O

ccasionally, things happen out of your control that push you beyond your capacity to cope. Unexpected legal battles, loss in business or career, divorce or relationship breakdowns and financial loss can be incredibly distressing, increasing the demand on your time, and your emotional and physical energy, leaving you exhausted and under tremendous pressure. Suddenly you find you’re not the person you once were, with stress taking its toll. Unhappy, anxious, angry, sleepless, out of routine, and unable to enjoy any aspect of your life. Getting through this period with your sanity can take some work, but there are strategies that can help you cope. Connecting with friends and sharing your fears will lighten the load. A true friend will always want to support you and won’t

consider you a burden. Support your health with exercise for endorphins and nutrient rich food. Intense periods of stress often deplete you so severely that it may cause a depressive state and worsen your situation. Seek help if you need it. Take yourself routinely to a place you find peaceful, watch the sunset, hike in a forest, surf or swim in the ocean. Appreciating the magnitude of nature reminds us how minute our troubles may be in the scheme of things. Perspective can give incredible clarity. Understanding the sun will still rise and fall, there will be an end to this at some point, and your life will return to its natural order, as it has done before. Remind yourself that this too shall pass. Find out more at advancedwellness.com.au.

NEW CBD WILL BE WORLD-CLASS

E

uropean and Asian design influences will make their way into the new Maroochydore central business district, but planners are promising the exciting new outdoor spaces will retain a strong Sunshine Coast flavour. Lead landscape architect and Maleny resident Mark Fuller says the key to design is encouraging residents to adopt the development and make it their own. The first stage of the CBD will feature an alfresco dining precinct with restaurants and bars lining new city streets and a central waterway. Construction began on the 53-hectare Maroochydore site in February, with stage one incorporating the core commercial precinct, together with retail and residential development. When the project is completed, more than 40 per cent of the site – the former Horton Park Golf Course – will comprise waterways and parks. “The new CBD will be built around an integrated waterway system, providing a relaxed atmosphere for waterfront dining and other recreational activities,” says Fuller, an urban design principal at Tract Consultants.

years and by 2040, well over half a million people are expected to call the region home. “This new city centre in the heart of the Sunshine Coast capital will ensure we are meeting the demands of the growing population, with thousands of new jobs, great community facilities and a range of additional entertainment options.”

IN A SNAPSHOT The project is expected to:

“European cities provide a lot of inspiration and the best example of this is their interconnectedness.” Fuller was behind the design of Brisbane’s Southbank and Roma Street Parklands and has more than 30 years’ experience leading landscape architecture projects across Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States, South East Asia and the Middle East. He plans to create an attractive place for people to work, live and visit, while showcasing the Sunshine Coast’s culture and lifestyle within a world-class CBD.

SunCentral Maroochydore Pty Ltd was established in early 2015 by the landowner, the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, to oversee the design and development of the unique project. Chief executive officer, John Knaggs, says plans for the new city centre reflected a region coming of age. “The Sunshine Coast is already the second highest performing regional economy in Queensland and the fifth highest nationally,” Knaggs says. “The Coast’s population has risen from 65,000 to 335,800 in the past 40

• Create 5,000 jobs by 2020, 15,000 jobs by 2025 and more than 30,000 jobs by 2040 • Add more than $350 million to the state’s economy in the next five years • Provide an estimated $4.4 billion boost to the Sunshine Coast economy • More than 40 per cent of the 53-hectare site will be parks and waterways • It will include commercial office space, exclusive retail, entertainment, convention and exhibition facilities, a premium hotel and recreational spaces • A rail corridor into Maroochydore is already designated by the State Government.

PROFILE

NO TIME TO WASTE

Sunshine Coast inventor Dean Cameron’s life was thrown into turmoil when his award-winning company, Biolytix, was put into liquidation. Five years on, he’s busier than ever and still passionate about creating a better world. Words: Leigh Robshaw

I

nventor and environmentalist Dean Cameron became a well-known Sunshine Coast identity when his wastewater treatment system, Biolytix, won eight major awards, including the 2007 Asia Innovation Award and was a finalist on the former ABC show, New Inventors. But when his Maleny-based company (which employed 60 people) went into liquidation in 2011, Cameron was forced to revaluate his life. Five years on, he’s back on track with his life and fully immersed in his passions for science, invention and sustainable living. “What happened with Biolytix was life-changing,” he says. “It was devastating really, because I’d put my heart and soul into it and to find out I was deceived by people I’d trusted, having to put the whole thing into liquidation was pretty gut-wrenching.” Cameron believes the Biolytix technology was, and still is, the best technology for waste treatment out there. While Biolytix is still operating, purchased by a New Zealand company, Cameron has moved on. “One of my passions is wastewater treatment for Third World countries,” he says. “I wanted to develop a low cost version of the Biolytics technology that could be used by the poorest people in the world, because there’s 2.6 billion people that don’t have any sanitation whatsoever. “I’m working with some people from the University of Technology, Sydney and the University of the Sunshine

Coast to develop a really low-cost version, but I’m not using the patent system. I’m into open source and sharing, so the new technology I’m developing will be completely open. “It will be done as a flat pack kit and the material cost of the kit would be around $800, so in bulk it will be considerably less than that.”

Cameron plans to seek government approval for the new technology in Australia, the US and Europe. “It’s an extension of my knowledge with the R&D I did with Biolytics,” he says. “When I went to China in 2014, I found they don’t make septic tanks there. They just make them using bricks and mortar and they’re terrible; badly built and they leak. So I had to think laterally and I came across some amazing products they make in China that are very cheap and can be adapted to use as a wastewater treatment system. You do away with the tank entirely and just have the core components of the treatment buried directly into the ground.” Cameron is also involved in a visionary new concept for housing called, Life Bubbles, which combine environmental sustainability with affordability. “I’ve been interested for many years in earth sheltered housing,” he says. “After going to Turkey and seeing the underground houses over there, or earth houses, I came back and built one myself using ferrocement. I built an underground cave in Maleny and put a greenhouse over it – it was enormously successful. It had a stable temperature and enabled me to grow tropical plants. It integrates the whole water cycle; that’s how ecosystems work. It’s creating a human centred ecosystem. “The whole concept of Life Bubbles is creating sustainable human habitat. It can be made so you don’t

need any inputs from carbon-based or fossil fuels. The whole thing can be entirely solar powered and it produces food, as well as providing you with shelter, beauty and a lovely place to live.” Cameron says the one drawback is it’s such a new concept and people have difficulty getting their heads around the idea of living like The Flintstones, but that there are excellent examples of people living this way around the world. After the loss of Biolytix, followed by a separation from his long-time partner, Cameron relocated to a 12-acre property in Eudlo to start again. This is where, with some like-minded friends, he’s setting up the Life Bubble Foundation. “This will be a world first for a community,” he says. “It can be done all sorts of ways. In China, we made a ferrocement shell or reinforced concrete shell and buried those. You make it on the ground, excavate, then bury it.” The Life Bubbles can also be carved into rock, and Cameron says there’s many areas around his Eudlo property where the rock is perfect for carving. “The ones we’re going to build here will be beautifully appointed and really comfortable,” he says. “We want people to come here and have the real wow factor. “Each one will cost around $50,000,

%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE

which is quite a bit cheaper than a normal house. It will last for centuries. It will be an intergenerational structure.” To further satiate his passion for sustainability, Cameron also volunteers for the Climate Council. “I’m raising funds for the Climate Council because frankly, almost everything we do is irrelevant if we can’t get our climate to a stable and safe place. At the moment, the way our government is going, we’re going to end up with major problems. “The Climate Council is independent of government and it can still get fair, impartial information out to people who really need to hear this stuff. Their work is needed now more than ever.” To do his bit for climate action, Cameron and his partner Elle Hughes have invited Melbourne comedian Rod Quantock to Queensland to do two shows, one in Brisbane and one in Maleny, with all proceeds going to the Climate Council.

CALM IN VIETNAM

Bamboo stick massages, sunrise yoga on the beach and delectable Vietnamese food are balm for the body and spirit. By Katie Wright

W

hen I’m asked to complete a wellbeing questionnaire a day before setting off on holiday, I put a big cross over an angry looking face, indicating five out of five for my stress level. It’s 11pm on a Saturday, and I’ve just finished painting my bathroom. I have to be up at 6am to leave for the airport and I haven’t even thought about packing yet. Fast-forward 24 hours and if I had to take the test again, I’d be circling the smiley face at the opposite end of the scale. I’m sitting, mojito in hand, watching dusk descend over Vietnam’s east coast, and I couldn’t be calmer. As I arrive at the Fusion Maia Danang, I’m whisked off to the spa for the two daily treatments as part of the resort’s holistic health approach. After the flight to Hanoi a bamboo roll massage – where a warm bamboo stick is used to work lemongrassscented oil into aching muscles – is exactly what I need. Next is the best manicure I’ve had –

an hour-long session that goes way beyond the hurried file and polish I get at home. Early on day two, I opt for the stretch release massage and am told to put on a pair of loose cotton pyjamas, rather than the usual robe and disposable knickers. I notice my therapist has more muscles than the rest of her colleagues and it soon becomes clear why: for the next hour I’m stretched and pummelled (delightfully) into oblivion. It feels glorious, and is the perfect preparation for my next activity. In a studio overlooking the beachfront in central Da Nang, I take part in an aerial yoga class led by a firm-butfriendly German instructor. At first, my fellow beginners and I are a bit shy about the mantras we’re required to chant, but we soon get into the swing of things, clinging to wide lengths of silk suspended from the ceiling, using the ropes to support ever-more taxing poses until we’re hanging like bats. Mantras done, in the afternoon I head

The UNESCO village of Hoi An is a unique blend of East and West along the coast south to Hoi An. The town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, was a crucial location for Dutch, Portuguese, Chinese and Japanese traders in the 16th century, and the architecture reflects the history – yellow and blue European-style houses sit alongside red-roofed temples from which the smell of incense wafts. I take a stroll through the centre of town and across the Japanese Covered Bridge, then try my hand at bartering for lacquered bowls and a tea set from one of the stalls that line the streets. With the sun set and my appetite piqued, I head over to Morning Glory, a busy restaurant owned by former street food seller Miss Vy.

Named after an indigenous green, leafy vegetable, Miss Vy’s third eatery specialises in authentic Vietnamese cuisine, so it’s no surprise when I’m served the best prawn summer rolls I’ve tasted. But instead, I tuck into a deliciously salty smoked aubergine and pork hotpot before calling it a night – I have an early start in the morning. Usually, getting up at 5am while on holiday is something I avoid, but I make an exception when one of the Fusionistas tells me a sunrise yoga class is not to be missed. She’s right. and watching the sun rise over the sea is a breathtaking way to start the day. That afternoon, I’m ready for another nap, having climbed 90 steps to reach the seven-tiered pagoda at the top of the nearby Marble Mountains. These five tree-topped peaks conceal cool, dark caves and shafts of light shine through the fug of incense lit around Buddha statues. Outside, in the shade of the pagoda, my guide leads me in a session of tai chi. Despite the heat and humidity, performing a series of slow, gentle movements is relaxing and refreshing. That night, I sleep like a baby. In fact, every night I sleep incredibly well. I’ve managed to make a serious dent

in my sleep deficit, and as I settle down for the flight, I don’t feel the guilt that comes at the end of a holiday that involves too many mojitos and not enough exercise. Vietnam may be a long way to go to recharge the proverbial batteries, but when the result is total mind and body rejuvenation, it’s worth it. * The writer travelled as a guest of Kuoni. – AAP

GET TOUCHY WITH NEONODE AIRBAR Feeling out of touch with technology thanks to an old laptop? The Neonode AirBar is set to bring old devices up-to-date with touchscreen functionality. With AirBar you can use your fingers to zoom, rotate photos and swipe from page to page. And it’s easy to use – simply plug it in and you are good to go. Its creators say that AirBar works by projecting an invisible light field on the surface of your display that makes it possible to touch the screen and interact with Windows 8 and 10 gestures. You can use anything to touch the screen – even gloved hands or a pen – as the light field reacts to any disturbance. Registration for pre-order is available at air.bar/. It will cost you less than $100.

THERE’S SOMETHING FISHY ABOUT THAT A New Zealand scientist is hoping to fix a cornea donor shortage and find a use for the country’s discarded fish eyes at the same time. University Of Auckland biochemist Laura Domigan has been given a grant to look into whether fish eyes, a low-cost by-product of the fishing industry, can be turned into corneas. More than 250 corneal transplants are performed in New Zealand each year and with an ageing population, demand has grown for technology to provide an alternative to donors. Worldwide, about 10 million people are blind from damaged corneas, but only about 100,000 transplants are performed each year because of donor shortages. Domigan’s study proposes recycling the fish leftovers into proteins that can be used to manufacture cornea substitutes. AAP

Australian comedian and presenter Nazeem Hussain says travel doesn’t broaden the mind. According to him, travel is a downright inconvenience. Delays, terrible food, strange beds and hotel neighbours getting to know each other are just some of the pitfalls that make him want to stay at home. Through the new ABC podcast, Burn Your Passport, Hussain is on a mission to prove that staying at home is better than hitting the road. Each week, he will be joined by other comedians who share travel stories and hilarious anecdotes about the negative side of travel. To listen visit iTunes.

MY OPINION

DID SOMEONE SAY DIET?

ASIA IS WHERE IT’S AT

A cheese club and a comfy bed have sabotaged Sami Muirhead’s plans to lose weight for an upcoming wedding.

Andrew Pitcher says the Sunshine Coast’s future depends on our ability to embrace the business opportunities Asia offers.

I

forgot to diet this week. Again. And now that it is virtually winter, I am a dead duck. A waddling duck destined to have wiggling hips and jiggling other bits for the duration of the cold season. Who can diet in the cooler weather? Salads are as about as appealing as voting at the upcoming Federal election. Bring on the warm red wines and thick hearty stews and gooey hot desserts including sticky date pudding and warm apple pie. The thing is, I love food. And wine. And in the cold months, who can get up and go for a jog at 5am to work off all those yummy calories? Fit people who do not wobble when they walk, that is who. I know you feel better if you are fit and healthy. You function better. You live longer. Blah blah blah. Pass me the block of chocolate. Sometimes, the guilt of treating exercise as my enemy gets the better of me. I set my alarm with every intention of doing physical battle with my stupid sports bra and squeezing into my Lycra pants (that is a workout in itself) but instead, decide a much better idea as the day gently breaks outside is to snuggle into my five-year-old daughter, threeyear-old son, and two dogs in our big warm bed. My husband is in that bed somewhere, but he is relegated to the bottom of the king size structure to

where the dogs used to sleep before they got upgraded to halfway up the bed. Not only did I forget to diet this week, but my husband and I joined a cheese club. Yes, here on the Coast. And it delivers the cheese to your door. So you can just get down to business in your pyjamas and eat all the cheese you want without leaving your home. I know this sounds like me telling you there is a magical unicorn living next door who will bring you unlimited chocolate in bed while you sit back and have your feet massaged. A cheese club! The thing that is problematic about loving food is the fact I am a bit overweight. And the little alarm bell in my head is ringing with fear and guilt because I am a bridesmaid in a few months for one of my best friends. So I really should try to lose some weight to put my best fancy-shoed foot forward. My beautiful bride-to-be is as thin as a rake, but she is a foodie of course. We bonded over ice-cream decades ago as a way of healing broken hearts or celebrating job promotions. To this day, we regularly worship at the altar of chocolate Rocky Road ice-cream together and solve the problems of the world. So there is bound to be fabulous food at the wedding. I need to try harder tomorrow and go on that jog at dawn. Or could just buy a new pair of Spanx.

W

hile there is a lot of focus at the moment in business on ‘the neweconomy’, ‘innovation’ and ‘the ideas boom’, there is an argument to suggest we are not fully leveraging an obvious path to future prosperity here on the Sunshine Coast – a deeper and more lasting economic connection with Asia. Take The Asian Century White Paper issued by the Gillard government and other similar reports (including a seminal one by Ross Garnaut in the ‘80s). All are focussed on the emergence of the various Asian economies and what Australia needs to do to reap the benefits of collaboration on many fronts. You already know the facts: Asia has half the world’s population, five of the top 20 largest economies, six of Australia’s top 10 trading partners and the fastest growing middle class on the planet. All within seven to 12 hours of Australia. While we often think about tourism as our primary Asian-facing industry, there are wider economic opportunities we should be considering – those generated when Asian business and governments invest here (e.g. in real estate, via infrastructure projects, in agriculture and other trading businesses), benefits from increased trade with Asian business (e.g. export of locally made produce) as well as the obvious boon of increased Asian

visitors to our region. Each has great upside. Imagine if you multiplied your current customer base a thousand times? There are pockets in our economy where the absolute right things are already happening – the airport expansion, the growth of key local export businesses and talk of international standard hotels and attractions (the absence of a true five-star resort or conference destination on the Coast is still confounding). However, we have to aim higher, move faster and embed the Sunshine Coast as a jewel in Asia, not just Australia. We already have the natural beauty, open landscapes, smog-free skies and pristine beaches working in our favour. What if we could enhance our reputation in Asia by offering fantastic, modern infrastructure, high-end shopping as well as artisanal and market fresh products, great accommodation and casino options? If we could supplement those services with a cultural shift where we offer widespread Asian language skills, genuine interest in the wider region, a welcoming investment environment and the most professional businesses to trade with in the world. After living and working in Asia for many years, my kids often ask when we are going back to Asia. I tell them we are already there.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

SHOULD YOU SELL IN MAY AND GO AWAY? Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

“S

ell in May and go away” is a favourite investment quote bandied about this time of the year. The idea being to get out of the stock market in May and think about re-entering in November at a more opportune time. With the recent strength in the market, it’s an opportune time to consider your current exposure to the stock market. Is it just a flippant market expression or wise investment advice? Firstly, it is believed that the saying originated in mother England, where May ushered in the start of the summer social season. For those in a position to have an interest in the stock market, attention

turned from wheeling and dealing in shares to other prestigious events. One can’t miss the start of the polo season, Royal Ascot or strawberries and champagne at Wimbledon. So no point having your funds tied up in the market without being able to give it adequate attention. It’s difficult to see how this history translates into the performance of our modern day Aussie market. However, we’re fairly accustomed to our market being tossed back and forth with the changing moods of our international friends. Looking at statistics, (remember – if you torture data long enough, it will confess to anything). May is the worst month to be invested in the Australian stock market, with the ASX200 losing 2.3 per cent on average over the decade. JPMorgan has recently highlighted several wildcards that could send shockwaves through global markets. The list includes US inflation – raising of interest rates faster than anticipated; US recession – real possibility by late 2017;

China – fiscal and monetary stimulus likely to be wound back in late 2016; Brexit – tipped to create huge ramifications to the British economy; Oil – falling US production and other production disruptions could see oil back to $US60 a barrel; US presidency

– say no more. It would appear that investors will be in for a potentially wild ride. Some will “sell in May and go away”, while others will batten the hatches and see out the volatility.

MY TIME

Are you a cafe or restaurant owner, chef, grower, muso or venue? Send your news to: mytime@myweeklypreview.com.au

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe is making an art out of being misunderstood as he tries this week’s French brew.

I

f being misunderstood is an art, then I should open a gallery. Seriously, it’s been a tough week people. It started with a disagreement with a work colleague over a simple matter and in the end I was like, “Well if sleeping in the nude bothers you so much, you should move your desk away from mine lady.” Then came the predictable backlash over a comment I made on the radio and on FB that was deemed insensitive and inappropriate. I was explaining how my seven-year-old daughter had told me I was and I quote, “The worst Dad ever…”

because I refused to shout her tuckshop for the second time in a week. “You are the worst Dad ever… the worst of all time.” All I said was, “Really? The worst Dad ever? Let’s Google Josef Fritzl shall we?” Needless to say, I’m happy to report I’m now considered the second worst Dad of all time. Of course, we all know for every action there’s a social media overreaction, so I copped a bollocking. Then my oldest female buddy Alisa rings me, very turpy, to say she’s been wronged by her man and their 18-monthold relationship is kaput. Of course, she believes because I played footy with this bloke when we were ten, that I should step in and at least text my disapproval to him. So I sent a little message saying how annoyed I was at the hurt he had caused. Of course, I was referring to the time in 1985 when he pegged a Rubik’s Cube at my head and cut my eyebrow open on footy camp. She didn’t know that. But I know he did. Jerk. My best advice to Alisa was to calm down, which in retrospect was about as successful as trying to baptise a cat.

Then, just as I’m starting to get into American footy, Jarryd Hayne pulls the pin on the NFL to maybe play footy for Fiji in the Rio Olympics. WTF? I wonder if the Hayne Train’s any good at tennis, ‘coz there’s a spot going on the Aussie Olympic side. Bernard Tomic is sorry he can’t play for Straya, but he’s got stuff on and that. Pity, he’s cheating himself out of letting us all down again, but this time on the Olympic stage. Then, to top it all off this week, I found out my brother Josh has multiple personalities. Don’t get me wrong, I still think he’s good people. Of course, there’s always bad news from around the world, especially when it comes to the health of the people. Let me tell you friends, frequent outbreaks of listeria, salmonella and E.coli are the main reasons why I limit my diet to Arnotts’ Mint Slice, chips and gravy and beer. It’s just so much healthier. On that note, this week we’re tucking into a cheeky little French brew called Veras 1866. Veras is an imported French beer brewed by one of the country’s leading breweries and is an easy drinking

premium style, full flavoured lager. Luckily I speak fluent French –“Ce’st la vie, croissant, baguette, Gérard Depardieu” – so it’s easy to translate this tasty little morsel. Normally, when I think of the French I think of cheese and regret, never have I thought of beer. The Veras has got that full European vibe, refreshing and crisp and tastes ace when it’s super chilled. It’s the best thing to come out of France since that crazy free running sport called Parkour. Trust the French to invent a sport based on running away. The Veras 1866 is a fine delicieux boisson, the perfect biere match for your fromage. Merci Veras brewery, merci. I give it 3.5 out of 5. VERAS 1866 EUROPEAN LAGER 330ML BOTTLE 4% Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. RETIREMENT PROMOTION

WORK STARTS ON $2.5 MILLION LEISURE CENTRE

T

he development of one of the Sunshine Coast’s most attractive and exciting over 50s lifestyle communities, Nature’s Edge Buderim, has entered a new phase with Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson officially breaking ground on its $2.5 million leisure centre. Already home to 46 residents, the $100 million project Nature’s Edge is about to begin construction of its 5-star leisure centre which is expected to take 10 months. It will feature an auditorium, indoor heated pool and spa, gymnasium, art and craft studio, library lounge, 30 seater cinema, dance floor, sauna and massage areas, a sundeck plus indoor outdoor bar, Teppanyaki BBQ, workshop,

and vast alfresco dining and lounge areas. Sales Manager Lyn Morrison says Nature’s Edge builder Phil Gabel is a veteran of this industry with more than 27 years’ experience building over 50s lifestyle developments, and we are delighted that the centrepiece of the Nature’s Edge community is now under construction. “The gated community, which lies in the foothills of Buderim Mountain, on the Sunshine Coast is in one of the most sought after retirement locations in Australia and set amongst prolific natural rainforest - you have to see to believe.” “The development when complete

will feature 190 free-standing residences plus the deluxe leisure centre. “The master built architect designed steel framed homes are free standing, with 8-star energy efficient ratings, lock up garages and all designed to take advantage of the unique rainforest setting. “There are no entry or exit fees, no stamp duty and no rentals so you receive 100% of your capital gains if you choose to sell.” Drop in for a tour of our display homes – you won’t believe the beauty and tranquillity of this remarkable over 50s lifestyle community. SUPER CHANGES STAY Treasurer Scott Morrison has ruled out any retreat on the government’s contentious plan to limit the superannuation tax concessions of wealthier retirees. The coalition is facing a backlash from its own supporter base on measures which include capping at $1.6 million the tax-free balance of retirement accounts. Morrison says the decision had been taken and there will be no reviewing the plan. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has also rejected concern about the coalition’s changes to superannuation following criticism from Labor and a right-wing think-tank. Last week’s federal budget included a $500,000 lifetime cap for nonconcessional superannuation contributions. The cap takes into consideration all non-concessional contributions made since July 1, 2007. Labor leader Bill Shorten says the change is undoubtedly retrospective breaching a coalition promise. Turnbull has rejected this, saying it only applies to future earnings. “It is not retrospective at all,” he says. The overall package of changes was designed to make the system fairer and provide extra retirement savings for people on low incomes and flexible work, he says. “People on very high incomes will pay more tax and, overall, the whole package either is beneficial or makes no difference to 96 per cent,” Turnbull says. Asked what consultation was being planned, he said it would relate to the “technicalities of the drafting” of the laws before they went to parliament. Shorten says the government has “grave questions to answer” about the retrospective potential of the changes. AAP

ody corporate can be a huge expense. But for the lucky few who buy up a block of land in new Pelican Waters development, The Edge Residences, they won’t only be paying affordable body corporate fees but snapping up a

prestigious address. With water access and views and modern designed homes featuring high quality craftsmanship, the gated community is being touted as the ideal place for retirees and semi-retirees. But with only two waterfront and

three premium north facing lots still available, developer Brad Teys says now is the time to take a look at the site. “The development targets retirees who are looking to downsize in luxury. “Body corporate fees are under $800. “This is a perfect step for those that

don’t want to live in the confines in a unit, apartment or townhouse but are not interested in a large house. “With a gated community you can lock up and go on holiday and leave knowing your house is safe. All of the buyers have been owner-occupiers and they are really amazing people.’’ Nestled on the edge of the new Pelican Waters town centre development and within walking distance of the existing shopping centre, tavern, medical precinct and Pumicestone Passage, the luxurious boutique terrace development will include 14 homes to be constructed by Costa Constructions. Residents have the choice of designing their own home and each purchase includes secluded internal courtyards, ducted airconditioning, square set high ceilings and entertainer’s kitchen featuring European appliances.

NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE Audi’s potent new TT-S roadster has amped up its performance levels. By Peter Atkinson AAP

T

hey used to call them hairdressers’ cars. An uncharitable term, you’d think, coined for those sporty-looking machines that tend to be more about style than substance. Pretty cars driven by pretty people, you could say. The implication is that while they might look sharp and sporty, in reality

they were sheep in wolf’s clothing. And it’s a barb that has been aimed at Audi’s gorgeous TT coupe. But if that shoe (or stiletto) has ever fit the German maker’s shapely little two-seater, it most certainly doesn’t apply anymore. Least of all to the sharpest, leanest, meanest version of the TT which we’ve just driven – the TT-S.

It’s fair to say that the original TT – released to great fanfare in the late ‘90s, was something of a game changer for Germany’s third-wheel premium brand. It was sexy, fun and a world away from the mostly stern, efficient image that had defined the marque to that point. But the critics weren’t entirely wrong when they suggested that first-generation

TT was more about form than function – more show than go. The second-generation TT arrived seven years ago and set about changing that equation. But it wasn’t until last year that transformation was complete with the arrival of this third-generation model. Now, the TT has stepped up yet another rung with this highly engaging, high-performance TT-S, adding some formidable turbocharged power and rapier-sharp handling to an already competent, well-evolved machine. The TT-S is definitely no hairdressers’ car – even if we did test the slightly vanity-focused, roadster variant. I can assure it will put the wind up plenty of European rivals – as well as ruffling the hair of those who chose to sample its performance potential with the cloth roof peeled back. It would want to, mind you. The TT-S costs not far south of the perennial benchmark for two-seat roadsters – the legendary Porsche Boxster. The Audi is a little cheaper, as well as a little slower and a little further down the desirability scale. But not by all that much, in any category. For about $100,000 plus onroads, it will deliver firecracker turbo four-cylinder performance, all-wheel-drive grip, plus

the ability to hit the speed limit in less than five seconds. When we first sampled the thirdgeneration TT almost a year ago we were struck not only by its sharpened, more focused driving dynamics but by the incredible attention to detail that Audi had poured into almost every aspect of this niche vehicle. While its DNA still evokes that original TT, it’s altogether more masculine, purposeful-looking and dynamically rewarding these days. Outside, it’s less curvy and doe-eyed – now more sharply-angled and aggressive – while inside it sets new standards of technology and design. The TT was the first Audi to debut the company’s latest ‘virtual cockpit’ instrument and cabin layout. At its heart is a high-resolution 12.3-inch, 3D graphic display, replacing the traditional instrument cluster that can be customised. The virtual cockpit does away with the need for the centre screen that has become so common in modern designs, instead placing all that information right in front of the driver. Audi has further challenged conventional design with other cabin controls in the TT – notably the climate-

control settings which now, brilliantly, are situated in the most obvious place possible – actually on the air vents that deliver the service. Other cabin controls are gathered in a modest line across the centre stack. The result is a very simple, minimalistic yet classy cockpit that is simple and intuitive to use. Under the bonnet it boosts power from the standard TT’s 168kW to a thrilling 210kW – all delivered to the ground via a six-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission and revised Quattro all-wheel-drive system. This new TT is lighter than its predecessor – by 45 kilograms – meaning that additional power is even more

noticeable. And the TT-S sits 10mm closer to the ground than the standard version– on larger wheels and stickier, lower-profile rubber – giving it noticeably sharper, flatter handling. A magnetic suspension damping system, controlled via the Audi Drive Select – means you can firm that ride and handling up even further. The boy racer types will no doubt enjoy the hydraulically-operated rear spoiler that deploys automatically at speeds above 120km/h – or can be raised or lowered at the press of a button. The folding cloth roof has a few virtues. Firstly, when open, it gives your ears a much better exposure to the wonderful sounds emitting from the TT’s quad exhausts. The roof design means it doesn’t intrude on the car’s modest 280 litres of luggage space. The soft-top peels back in just 10 seconds – a function that can be performed at speeds up to 50km/h. And, of course, the charms of this little car seem all the more apparent when the sun is shining on your back and the wind is in your hair. Still, it’s fair to say this is no place for hairdressers – or anybody who’s recently visited one, for that matter. Better hold on to your hat, too.

AUDI TT-S ROADSTER HOW BIG? It’s strictly a two-seater, but is roomy enough for a fun-loving couple for those sunny weekend drives. And there’s a reasonable amount of space in the boot, too. HOW FAST? It will race to the speed limit in a very brisk 4.7 seconds – which is serious performance-car territory. Its allwheel-drive grip, superb balance and nimble handling means that few will keep up with you on the windy bits. HOW THIRSTY? Despite its formidable outputs, the two-litre, four-cylinder engine is eminently driveable around town, and as a bonus sips just 6.8L/100km. HOW MUCH? The TT-S coupe barely creeps in beneath the $100k mark, the roadster is $103,900 plus onroads, and will stretch well beyond that once a few little extras are factored in – like the $6300 performance package.

RECORD INTEREST IN NEW CX-9

T

he first shipment of the brand new Mazda CX-9 has arrived in Australia ahead of its July launch. Scheduled for use at the national media launch, followed by a Mazda dealer event, 60 vehicles docked in Melbourne late last week, having been shipped direct from Japan. Buyer interest in Mazda’s luxury seven-seat family-sized SUV is at an all-time high, with almost 55,000 potential purchase leads registering their interest in the vehicle. The new vehicle will be available in four grades including the entry-level Sport, mid-grade Touring, high-spec GT and high plus grade Azami. Never has there been so much pre-launch interest in a Mazda model, with CX-9 numbers surpassing the record 34,000 leads and 9700 priority call requests recorded for Mazda MX-5 prior to its showroom debut in August 2015. Mazda Australia marketing director Alastair Doak says the response has been terrific. “We had record interest in Mazda MX-5, but the response to (the) brand

SURF REPORT

Boring! Is the only word I have for the latest competition in Rio. I think I’d rather stick sharp pencils in my eye balls than watch it! The only highlight was Medina’s upside down 360. Now, this weekend will have some small waves but some wind will be on it so I suggest lower your expectations and maybe you will have some fun. I have been thinking about the winter swells of 2014. Do you remember how good that was? Epic back to back swells for a few months in a row with offshore winds, take me back there! Until next week when waves are aplenty.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Quality tailor are chasing bait in the deeper channel from the motorway bridge crossing the Maroochy River to the mouth of Eudlo Creek with some schools moving into the shallows on the high tide. Bream are also moving upriver with prawns and fowl gut the bait to use along the Bradman Avenue riverfront. Flathead can be found throughout the Maroochy River with whitebait and lures producing the best results. SURF: Holes are showing up from Marcoola to Pincushion with tailor and sea bream moving in on the rising tides. Pillies are the best baits. There are sand whiting and dart along Maroochy Beach using pippies. OFFSHORE: Water temp is now around 22 degrees. Perfect conditions this week have seen all areas producing quality fish. Point Cartwright and The Gneering’s have mac tuna and long tail tuna chasing bait schools, so look for the surface splashes for the hottest spots. Close-in reefs are firing for mixed reef fish using pillies and squid. FRESHWATER: Local dams are returning small bass on live shrimps and medium divers. Cooler conditions are making the middle of the day the best time for trolling lures, however, bait will return the better quality fish. From July, freshwater licenses will only be available from Australia Post offices or online.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Mercury (your power planet) is moving forwards again. So activities involving communication, computers and travel should all improve as you gradually get your Gemini mojo back. With Venus in your sign (from Tuesday until June 17) it’s time to flirt up a storm.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] With Mercury finally moving forwards, group activities are set to improve as you collaborate closely with others to achieve a satisfactory outcome. But a close friendship will be frustrating. Enjoy some time on your own at the weekend.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] When it comes to a child, teenager or friend, don’t promise more than you can deliver. With Mars reversing back into your domestic zone on Friday aim to be more productive around the home, as you catch up on jobs you’d put on the backburner.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Avoid getting stuck in a veritable Virgo rut! Jupiter is moving slowly through your sign (until September 9) which encourages you to be more adventurous, and to look at life from a much wider and wiser perspective. Which can be very scary and confronting.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Mercury is moving forwards, which should help an intimate relationship or joint financial project that has been stalled. But you still need to be extra careful about what you post online, as Mars and Saturn continue reversing through your social media zone.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] With Mars reversing through your sign (from Friday until June 29) someone may try to railroad you into being a version of yourself that doesn’t feel authentic. Don’t let that deter or depress you Scorpio! The universe is testing your resolve to express your true self.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Saturn puts the breaks on your free-wheeling style this week. You want to charge ahead but the stars urge you to pace yourself. If you are organised and focused, you can move mountains and catch up on unfinished business. If not, then you’ll just fritter the week away.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] There is the tendency to obsess about what might happen, and make mountains out of molehills. So step back and view people and situations from a much wider perspective. Avoid saying things that you really don’t mean (and may later regret).

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] With Venus visiting your entertainment zone (from Tuesday until June 17) it’s the perfect time to attend a book reading, music concert, theatrical event or art exhibition – plus tap into your own creativity and party! A project at work could stall or backfire.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] No matter how busy you are in the outside world, home is where the heart is this week as you cook, clean, de-clutter, redecorate or re-arrange. Then you’ll breathe easy after a job well done. Venus gives a family relationship a boost; you’ve got more in common thought.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The ability to express what’s on your mind returns, as Mercury moves forwards in your sign. Choose your words wisely, as they have the power to move others in emotional ways. And beware the urge to splurge! Venus visits your money zone from Tuesday until June 17.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] This week it will feel like one step forwards and two steps back, so you’ll have to idle your ram motor and cool your heels. Mercury is now direct which slowly improves money matters. Then on Friday, Mars reverses back into Scorpio, where it stays until August 2.

THE LAST WORD

SCHOOL OF ROCK Richard O’Leary introduces his sons to the primal joy of headbanging to AC/DC in the car.

I

n this column I try to make your life a little easier, letting you learn from my mistakes. So if you are a parent and a TNT truck drives past and your five-year-old son asks what that word means, do yourself a favour and cut to the chase: “No, you can’t watch the movie.” Have I lost you yet? Stick with me. I’m on the way home with my boys when I’m asked about the truck branding. As usual, when faced with a tricky one, I try to buy a bit of time. “It’s actually an acronym. Each letter stands for something.” I know what you are thinking… I’m an idiot, there is only one way this conversation can go. Unfortunately, I only work that out half way through the sentence and by that time I am committed. “What do they stand for?” he asks. The cogs in my brain start to churn, but mostly I just hear the crunching of

grinding gears. “I think it means… (to be fair, this does indicate some doubt on my part) the letters stand for Trans National… (pause) Network.” Genius. I am a freak of nature. Brilliant. But wrong. I’ve since found out it stands for Thomas Nationwide Transport. Who knew? But at the time, I think I am right and give myself a big metaphorical pat on the back and continue to drive. Triumphant. “It also means dynamite,” my seven-year-old son says. Now, a smart man would let it go at that, but sometimes I just don’t know when to shut up. “It’s also the name of a song,” I say. “By AC/DC.” “Can we listen? Can we listen?” my youngest says. I pull over and YouTube the song on my phone, press play and pull out onto the road. My two boys headbang to the beat,

drawing on some primitive rock ‘n’ roll instinct I’m convinced we’re born with. “That’s great,” they say as it finishes. “Play it again. Play it again.” Since that day we’ve heard just about every recording of the song – did you know there are SpongeBob and Minecraft versions? One thing I didn’t know was TNT was the theme music for Iron Man 2 – so when my son watched that version – his next question was as predictable as an Angus Young duck walk at an AC/ DC concert. “Can I watch Iron Man 2?” “Maybe when you are a little older.” “Not fair, not fair.” No, don’t thank me, it’s my pleasure. Thankfully, my youngest has moved on to a new genre – punk. Have you ever tried explaining what Anarchy in the UK means to a five-year-old? roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
