emingway once said: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” If that’s the case, you’d better get the Band-Aids because in this week’s cover story we take a look at the Sunshine Coast’s literary scene in the final part of our series about creativity on the Coast. We try to get into the heads of the region’s best-known authors, as well as some of the up and comers, to find out what motivates them, who inspires them, and why literary festivals are so important. Also this week, you get to meet an amazing woman who corrected one of Queensland’s worst wrongs, get on board for a wild time in Botswana and test drive the new Lexus GS-F sedan. All this plus the latest news and views, beauty and life tips, tech breakthroughs, places to go and people to see. In Property, we take a close look at Parklakes 2 and the changing face of Bli Bli. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

CAUGHT IN THE ACT

Dave Faul from Marcoola is a DJ and musician who books acts for Level 2 Nightclub at the new Riverside Bar and Restaurant in Maroochydore. FIRST JOB?

down at the Lake Jindabyne Hotel in the Snowy Mountains, Jindabyne for around three months and had put my heart and soul into creating my ideal dance party called Lunacy. While I was standing up on the stage overlooking the 2000 people with their hands in the air, I remember thinking, I want to do this forever.

Kitchen hand at a seafood restaurant – I will never forget the smell of my apron after work.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Booking international and national acts and entertainment for the new riverside bar and restaurant, Level 2 in Maroochydore, and the Rolling Rock nightclub in Noosa. I’m also really excited about going back into the studio in a couple of weeks to write some new music that will be released hopefully later this year.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not learning from the poor decisions I had made that in turn I ended up regretting making .

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

My family includes everybody in everything we do and I never leave anyone out.

To have a song I wrote and sung become a music video clip played on Rage and Channel V.

FIRST CAR? A white Toyota Corolla.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?

FAVOURITE BOOK?

I’m in the studio creating music that I love with people that I love being around.

Scar Tissue – Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers).

FAVOURITE SONG?

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

Never Tear Us Apart – INXS.

A closed mind on other people’s thoughts, feelings or personal beliefs.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? You will only get out what you put in. I love this advice as it is so true. Effort = reward.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? Two and a half years now – I love it.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I love watching the sun go down over the horizon at the dog beach, Noosa Woods – you can’t beat it.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Hello? Its magic! It has a small country town community feel to it with all the benefits of living in a small city right on the coast. The beaches are some of the most amazing I have seen in Australia and the weather is as good as it gets almost the whole year round.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I asked my four-year-old son, if he could do whatever he liked doing and be whoever he wanted to be, what would he want to do and be? He looked up and said he just wanted to be me and do what I do. The unconditional love in his eyes made me melt. It was the best feeling I have ever felt, even knowing that he really had no idea what I did.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS?

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

Maroochydore for the nightlife, bars and restaurants and then Noosa for the beaches and national park.

It was a Saturday night back in August 2001. I had been working on my first real ticketed dance party

Mondays – I would get rid of them altogether.

HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Quickly as I can and move on. Some things you cant change no matter what you do, so I change the one thing that I know I can – my attitude towards it.

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would say, ‘Self, put some money aside every week without fail, no matter how much or how little, put some into a savings account you can’t get at easily and save for a rainy day’.

TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee. White with two thanks.

NRL OR AFL? I don’t really follow either that much to take interest. I do however love the State of Origin every year. I was born in Albury NSW so go the Blues – haha.

COVER STORY

TELLING TALES

Sunshine Coast writers are making their mark on Australia’s literary scene, but say lack of funding is a major plot hole. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

“As someone who is inspired by the natural world, I think it’s a great place to write. It’s part of the reason I live here, and why I moved here, so I could have a bit more space to write”

T

he recent announcement of another literary festival on the Sunshine Coast, and the 21st staging of Voices on the Coast next week, has some people predicting we are on our way to becoming recognised as a region of writers. So is this a new era in our literary tradition or the breaking of a false dawn? My Weekly Preview spoke with a number of authors across the Coast about writing, the creative scene, and whether or not our literary story is going to have a happy ending.

STEVEN LANG Lang has written two novels and has won a number of prestigious literary awards. He is the organiser of the Outspoken writer’s festival and lives in Maleny. What motivates you to keep writing? Writing is simply what I do. Over the years I’ve made decisions about how I live, and what I regard as central. Other than my family, books and writing have been the two things I’ve focused on more than any other and this sort of thing becomes cumulative. What might have been no more than an ambition to start with, a dream, has come to define how I see myself, how I exist in society and the world. We all try on various coats throughout life, looking for one that fits. With writers, this process is 12 My Weekly Preview | May 27, 2016

12.indd 1

slightly different because when we try on our coats, all the time underneath, we’re telling ourselves quietly, ‘this coat isn’t who I am, the real me is in here, taking notes’. What advice would you give to writers just starting on their journey? Read. In my case, and in the case of every other even remotely successful writer I know, the desire to write has come from reading books and from an almost visceral need to become part of the community of books, to contribute to the conversation and to emulate the works of writers they have loved. Why do you think this region is so prolific when it comes to writing? Is it? There are people writing all over Australia. Melbourne has set itself up as the City of Literature, which is a great thing. Sometimes I’m very envious of that, of a whole culture which thinks writing is important. Generally, I don’t get the sense that the Sunshine Coast thinks writing is that important. We’re very lucky up here in Maleny with our many bookshops and festivals – clearly there are a lot of readers who either live here or visit. It’s important to have readers. Sometimes I find myself astonished that there are still people out there, in the era of the internet and instant screen satisfaction, who are prepared to sit down and read a book

from cover to cover. What is needed to take the Sunshine Coast to the next step towards becoming a well-known writing region? Funding for literature in Australia is woeful; $2.5 million last year, federally. Which, incidentally, is a tiny fraction of what the government earns through tax on the sale of books. The average earnings for a writer in this country is $13,000 a year. Is there anything holding us back from becoming more successful? See the answer above. Although I might add that the role of the [Sunshine Coast]University in the larger writing community has been disappointing at best. They have a significant creative writing department, but they play an extremely minor role in supporting festivals or writers outside of their immediate academic circle. How important is the growth of literary festivals to the future of writing in this region? Enormously so. One of the delights about organising Outspoken has been the discovery that there is a hunger for intelligent conversation in this region.

INGA SIMPSON Simpson is the critically acclaimed author of three books and lives in Eudlo. What keeps you motivated to put

pen to paper – or fingers to keyboard – each day? I guess it’s a compulsion. I always have a story going on in my head, a project in the works. I don’t feel so good if I’m not writing. It’s making things up, and that combination of creating things in your imagination; crafting them on the page into hopefully, eventually beautiful sentences and paragraphs, and a story that engages the reader. What advice do you have to aspiring writers setting out on this journey? Get into a routine, just writing a little bit every day, even if it is just 15 minutes. But stick with your story, if you step away and leave it for too long it makes it hard to go back to and you start to procrastinate and start cleaning out the cupboards. What is a writer’s life like on the Sunshine Coast? As someone who is inspired by the natural world, I think it’s a great place to write. It’s part of the reason I live here, and why I moved here, so I could have a bit more space to write. Literally. I live on a bush block, my studio is surrounded by trees, I can’t see a man-made thing. Everywhere I go there is just such natural beauty, that’s part of my inspiration and why I love living here. myweeklypreview.com.au

24/05/2016 10:01:48 AM

COVER STORY

Is there a literary scene? Do writers help other writers? As far as the community, I have to say I’m probably not the best person to ask. I’m a bit of a hermit. There are some great hubs of activity on the Coast, Outspoken up at Maleny is this rolling festival that has Australian and international authors in a conversation style format with Stephen Lang every month or so. I go to that and catch up with people. My sense is that there is a vibrant writing community, a lot of emerging writers coming out of the [Sunshine Coast] University courses, some of whom I’ve had contact with. We’re lucky to have that course there and they’re doing good things, and it’s a growing program and university and I think that’s a great boon for the Coast. Does living in the region influence how and what you write? Absolutely. I’m very much shaped by the natural world in what I write and the subject matter, definitely. I’m writing a nature writing memoir, which is about where I live, and about my tree change. One of my books was set here and this one will be too. It’s where I live, get around, walk and take photos. I think it’s definitely shaping my senses and my subconscious. Is there anything the region needs to take it to the next step to make it a more well-known writing region? Yeah (she laughs). Some funding from the council. I noticed in their last glossy brochure of their vision that the arts had finally crept into it. Some way of coordinating that creativity and the artists doing things – some sort of annual or monthly program that drew attention to that and promoted them, and funded them in some organised way would be great.

ALEESAH DARLISON Darlison is the author of more than 20 children’s books and lives in Buderim. She will be appearing at Voices on the Coast and the Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival.

13.indd 1

What motivates to keep writing? A desire to create and share interesting and inspiring stories. I always feel very passionately about the topics or subject matter I’m writing about and I like to think my stories can generate that kind of passion in others too. What advice would you give to writers just starting on their journey? Don’t expect to become an overnight sensation. It takes considerable time – often years – to develop your craft. To become a successful, published author you need to write every day, surround yourself with supportive family and friends, network and connect with like-minded people. What is a writer’s life like on the Sunshine Coast? It’s amazing. You can really flourish here as an author or illustrator. I moved here from Sydney about 18 months ago and I was a little worried that I would feel isolated or that there wouldn’t be any opportunities here for me. I’m glad to say that’s certainly not the case. There are loads of other authors here and plenty of opportunities for work on the Sunshine Coast, in Brisbane and throughout regional Queensland. Why do you think this region is so prolific when it comes to writing? Fresh air, a laid-back lifestyle and inspirational surroundings are sure to breed great writers and great artists. The way we live also gives us time to write – a much-needed factor when perfecting a manuscript ready for publication. Is there a literary scene? My area of expertise is children’s and young adult literature, so I’m talking about people like Peter Carnavas, Dave Hackett, Michelle Pike, Elaine Ouston, Allison Paterson, Gregg Dreise, Judy Paulson – just to name a few. We all help and support each other, whether it’s offering feedback on a manuscript, giving advice about publishers and where to submit work, or sharing opportunities and information about upcoming events. People in our industry

are always generous to one another. What support is there for writers? Support for writers comes in many forms – through the Sunshine Coast Library Service, the Sunshine Coast Council with its funding opportunities and arts event initiatives. The various bookstores on the Sunshine Coast support each other too.

CASEY ARDRON Ardron has just released his first book, an adolescent adventure called Xavier Wintersbee. He’ll be appearing at the Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival. What motivates to keep writing? Easy answer – a passion for the dramatic and the love of telling a good tale. I honestly get excited at coming up with the twists and turns of the plot. I never get tired of talking about the characters and the storyline. What advice would you give to writers just starting on their journey? Write for the love of writing, and not because you want a bestseller. And of course, to finish what you start. It’s no coincidence that the theme of my first book is patience – without it, there’d be no book. And if it takes years to finish, then so be it. Why do you think this region is so prolific when it comes to writing? To write, you need inspiration. And here, you’re surrounded by inspiration – the sea, the hinterland, the mountains. When it’s so easy to be inspired, writing comes easy, no matter what the subject. Is there anything holding us back from becoming more successful? Our laid-back nature here on the Coast is a great thing. But sometimes, it’s easy to be too laid-back. It’s good to be patient as an author, a poet, a musician or any form of artist. But if you have a talent, and a passion, don’t be too patient. It’s a fine line between being patient and lazy. Just get started and don’t stop – no matter how good the waves are.

FESTIVALS Outspoken Outspoken is an extended literary festival taking the form of occasional conversations with writers in Maleny. It has attracted some of Australia’s best and most popular authors, of both fiction and nonfiction, such as Kate Grenville, Tim Flannery, Henry Reynolds, Graeme Simsion, and Thomas Keneally. Its list of internationally acclaimed writers includes Alexander McCall Smith, Patrick Gale and Ann Patchett. outspokenmaleny.com Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival – September 9 to 11 The inaugural event will be held in Coolum and celebrate the Sunshine Coast’s Aboriginal heritage and surfing culture. The festival will bring together Australian and international writers (including journalists, environmentalists, photographers, poets, performers and musicians). The original line-up includes journalist Sean Dorney, children’s author Aleesah Darlison and ‘Uncle’ Herb Wharton. The organisers of the festival want it to become an annual event. sunshinecoastreadersand writersfestival.com Voices on the Coast 2016 – June 4 to 8 Voices on the Coast is a youth literature festival on the Sunshine Coast presented by Immanuel Lutheran College and the University of the Sunshine Coast. It includes two student days held at the University of the Sunshine Coast, plus a number of additional community events aimed at adults, emerging writers and readers. The student days target students from Year 4 to Year 12, with more than 130 talks and workshops. The student days are also open to adults. voicesonthecoast.com.au

COAST SET TO SCORE NATIONAL NETBALL TEAM

COAST TO CHINA

The Sunshine Coast may have its own national sporting team in the near future, with Netball Australia confirming that Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club is a preferred bidder in the expanded National Netball League, known as the ANZ Championship. Netball Australia will continue negotiations with its potential new licensees, including Melbourne Storm, regarding their involvement in the competition. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the Storm and University of the Sunshine Coast consortium are in a strong position to win the second half of the bidding process. “The feedback since news broke that the Melbourne Storm was vying for a licence to base a netball team here has been incredible.’’

KAWANA LIBRARY $230,000 RENO BEGINS The new look Kawana Library will be unveiled to the public next month with the $230,000 refurbishment project getting underway next week. Councillor John Connolly says the works will deliver a vibrant and fresh facility for the community. The library will be closed from May 30 through to June 5. During the library closure, some limited services including storytime, newspapers, limited borrowing and limited Wi-Fi access will be available via a pop-up library in the rotunda area from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

10,000

Sunshine Coast residents are being encouraged to get moving and take up the 10,000 steps per day challenge to help raise awareness and funds for the one in five Australians living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions. Arthritis Awareness Week is from May 29 to June 5 and Arthritis Queensland has set the goal of walking 1.186 million steps collectively – one step for every Queenslander who lives with the condition. Coast resident Helga Dalla was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis last year and has joined forces with Lauren Vercoe of Zenko Yoga to raise awareness. Sign up to the campaign at timetomove.net.au.

Four Sunshine Coast women are scaling great heights this week all in the name of breast cancer research. Breast cancer battlers Di Olsen and Susan Hirst, together with Sandra Reardon and Liz Ward raised more than $34,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Steps Towards a Cure: Great Wall Trek. The women have spent the week walking the Great Wall of China to raise awareness of the disease.

MAYOR ON A MISSON TO TALK US UP Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson plans to build on the region’s economic relationships with partners in Hong Kong and China, as well as explore opportunities in South Korea during a 12-day investment roadshow that kicked off earlier this week. His visit will also encourage job creating investment on the Sunshine Coast and further relationships with parties who have already expressed interest in aspects of the SunCentral Maroochydore Priority Development Area. The mayor will also travel to the Biotechnology Innovation Organisation International Convention in San Francisco with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

NEW HOSPITAL HONOURS ADEM CROSBY

Adem Crosby pictured in 2013 with his parents Brent and Lu

The cancer care unit at the new $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital will be named after philanthropist and former cancer patient Adem Crosby. Minister for Health Cameron Dick says the Adem Crosby Centre will honour the Sunshine Coast teenager who lost his battle with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in 2013. Adem and his parents, Brent and Lu, founded the Team Adem Blood Donation Community after he was diagnosed in 2011 and it has continued to grow, saving 30,000 lives to date.

COAST WINS BID TO STAGE MAJOR AWARDS Following a number of highly competitive bids from capital cities and regional centres all around Australia, the Australian Event Awards will be staged on the Sunshine Coast for the next three years. After a bid put forward by Business Events Sunshine Coast, Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, the awards, which recognise the nation’s best events and achievements, will take place at Novotel Twin Waters in 2016 and 2018 and The Events Centre in Caloundra in 2017. Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray says the staging of these national awards reinforces the Coast’s growing reputation of being Australia’s leading regional events destination.

145 NEW AUSSIES

More than 145 residents became the Coast’s newest Australian citizens during a ceremony held last Friday, including the only Toubou people thought to be living in Australia. Abdulsalam Tokh, and his wife Mariam Gaji, moved to Australia from Libya in 2010 to study, and were among citizenship recipients who hailed from Italy, England and Germany. “I particularly value the fact that citizens of Australia are given respect and dignity as individual human beings,” Abdulsalam said. “I have found this is a country made up of many different cultures and religions and together this makes a beautiful life.

COAST BUILDER WINS AGAIN Sunshine Coast builder Ryan Designer Homes has taken out a national gong with the developer’s Pelican Waters Qualia Town Homes securing a HIACSR Australian Housing Award. The development was named Australia’s best in the townhouse and villa category at the awards, which were held on Hamilton Island on May 20. It is the fourth national award Ryan Designer Homes have won in recent years.

$2,000

A Sunshine Coast mother of four has raised $2,000 for health services charity Wishlist to help ease the burden on parents whose children are unexpectedly admitted to hospital. Sam Dutton held a ladies lunch to raise money for a Playstation and games for the paediatric area of Nambour’s Department of Emergency Medicine. “I have four kids so visits to Emergency and the children’s ward is not uncommon,’’ Dutton says. Her fundraising efforts have also paid for toiletry bags for parents with children in the paediatric ward. In addition, $1,000 raised from the lunch was also donated to the niece of one of Dutton’s colleagues who is currently battling cancer.

APP OF THE WEEK

YOUR OWN WARM SHOWER AT THE BEACH This nifty gadget is sure to grab the attention of surfers, anglers and campers alike. RinseKit is the world’s first portable shower to have the pressure of a garden hose without pumping or batteries and it is now on track to become the only of its kind to have a battery-powered heater system that quickly and safely warms water. This means you can have a hot shower anywhere, anytime. The project is being funded through crowd-funding platform Kickstarter and has raised almost $100,000. Pre-orders are being taken through Kickstarter.com and the product will be shipped worldwide from October.

NEW MICROSCOPE TO USE HELIUM NOT LIGHT

DUOLINGO You may be going overseas on a holiday, or simply hoping to impress. Either way, for people wishing to broaden their linguistic skills, you can’t go past Duolingo. This app is a fun and easy way to learn a new language. From Spanish to French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Turkish, Duolingo has a wide range of languages. Users can practice speaking, reading, listening and writing with this simple to use app that starts with the basics and moves up to sentences and phrases. It also includes new daily words. Duolingo is free and available on iOS and Android.

Researchers from Newcastle University are hailing their world-first scanning helium microscope as a game-changer for new discoveries. Instead of using light as a source, the new microscope developed at the NSW university and the UK’s University of Cambridge over the past 20 years uses helium, which doesn’t penetrate or change a microscopic sample so scientists can study specimens in their true state. “The medical and pharmaceutical applications are very exciting. For the first time in mankind’s history we have a microscope that can study human samples in their true, unmasked state. It will enable a new point of view for things like parasites, cell cultures and bacteria,” lead researcher Associate Professor Paul Dastoor says. “Delicate structures, such as biological samples, suffer degradation under existing microscopes because they use light as the source. So the act of observation can destroy or change the properties of the sample being studied.” – AAP

RBA REMAINS PRAGMATIC Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

I

n a finely balanced decision, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) elected to lower the cash rate by 25 basis points to 1.75 per cent at the May board meeting. The RBA pointed to unexpectedly low inflation data, which effectively forced its hand. Through the judicious application of monetary policy, the RBA seeks to maintain inflation between two and three per cent. But when the March Consumer Price Index revealed an annual inflation rate of 1.3 per cent, it was time to act. The bank’s decision also has an element of risk management. Faced with the possibility of another nasty surprise from falling inflation, a lack of

policy response would leave the RBA flat-footed. Another factor in the decision was an assessment that the housing market has cooled sufficiently to allow lower rates. With stiffening lending standards and a strong supply response in some markets, the risks of stoking another boom have abated over the last year. The rate decision was quickly followed by the RBA’s Statement of Monetary Policy, which contained a fundamental rethink of the inflation outlook, with broad-based weakness in domestic cost pressures. This provided a strong indication that the RBA has more in store. Accordingly, we expect another rate cut in August, after the next CPI result. That would put the cash rate to 1.5 per cent, but there is the possibility that the RBA won’t stop there. If the RBA’s core inflation forecasts are realised, it would take an even lower cash rate to provide the necessary adjustments.

This latest decision supports the idea that the RBA values pragmatism over philosophy. There should be little doubt that Australia has further scope to ease monetary policy and a willingness to do so should circumstances require it. A steady decline in interest rates since the financial crisis has seen investors drifting away from cash as a sufficient means of income generation. Following recent events the search for income has intensified. The push into yield was clearly evident after the RBA’s announcement, with higher yielding sectors, such as property trusts, industrials and utilities driven higher.

“We expect another rate cut in August, after the next CPI result

ESTRESS APP A WINNER

chool students will soon be able to turn to technology to help monitor and manage stress levels thanks to a new app developed by a group of savvy Sunshine Coast students. The EJ2 – Estress mobile application, developed by Unity College Year 11 students Jordan Josic, John Berriman and Ellen Massey, has taken out top honours in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards. The app helps students monitor stress levels. A total of 24 students from eight different schools across the Sunshine Coast participated in the inaugural competition, which aims to foster, promote and grow innovation and entrepreneurship. All participants embarked on a four-week entrepreneurial mentoring program run by Spark Bureau to refine their ideas with the help of some of the Sunshine Coast’s sharpest minds with technology start-up business experience. Winning team member Jordan Josic says taking part in the Mayor’s Telstra Technology Awards is a life-changing experience. “We’re very excited to win, it was

Is Joint Pain Disturbing Sleep and Restricting your Lifestyle? Tired of Pain Killers? An Undiagnosed Condition may be the Cause. Tired of taking pain killers and anti-inflammatories? Is joint pain stopping you from doing the activities you used to love, or worse, is it killing you to do simple tasks? Research has proven that inflammation can be the driver of chronic diseases such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, but where is the inflammation coming from, and why is it happening to you? More and more people are being affected by an insidious disease process that can masquerade as fatigue, anxiety, depression, digestive symptoms, weight problems, and many more serious diseases. Joint pain is just the warning sign of total systemic inflammation. Conditions of inflammation are commonly caused not only from diet but also from immune responses to certain foods, chemicals, bacterial, fungal or viral infection.

Don’t accept pain as normal, there is something that can be done about it. Telstra’s May Boisen, John Berriman, Jordan Josic, Ellen Massey, Mark Jamieson such a great opportunity for us to work with business mentors and people in the area of technology. It gave us a chance to show our peers that anything is possible and show that even at our age, we can come up with a great idea for business. “We hope to develop the web app as part of a pilot program at our school Unity College and then we hope to get feedback and refine the app so we can create it and send it out to other schools.” Siena Catholic College took out second place with their Wired in Technologies website and smartphone app, while Pacific Lutheran Colleges won third prize for a creation that uses light sensors to trigger a sound when walking on steps.

With over 10,000 research papers written about it, this hidden epidemic is referred to as “the disease your doctor can’t diagnose” with good reason. Increased Intestinal Permeability or Leaky Gut, is a condition where toxic food particles, environmental chemicals or pollutants, and bacterial waste leak through your digestive tract and enter your blood stream. Once your immune system is triggered, your body produces a hormone, cortisol, which drives your immune system into action, promoting inflammation and beginning the development of chronic disease. It is suggested that more than 100 autoimmune diseases all begin with leaky gut. While traditional medications may provide you with temporary relief of your symptoms, these often come with side effects and can lead to further health complications. It’s only through treating the root cause that you can look forward to a positive pain free lifestyle. Results can be achieved quickly with correct investigation and treatment. Specific testing can be ordered to identify offending foods, and types of bacterial, viral or fungal infection. Educating you on eating a diet that decreases inflammation, encourages weight loss if needed, is highly nutrient rich, and will leave you feeling full and satisfied, is the first step. You have a choice. Change the path of your life forever. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or visit www.advancedwellness.com.au

It is sightings such as this that, in part, justify the hefty price tag attached to a safari in Botswana, one of the most expensive but enduringly popular destinations in Africa, and a particular favourite for honeymooners. This September the former British protectorate celebrates 50 years of independence, and having been tipped by Lonely Planet as the top country to visit in 2016, tourist numbers are set to swell. into the waterways. My driver, KB, introduces us to the resident Tsaro lion pride, the stars of several nature documentaries made by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert, who own the Great Plains safari company. The Tsaro pride’s story is a soap opera of power, turf wars and female infanticide, although now only a few of the original players remain. We watch one Herculean male try to regroup with a lioness and her young. But keen to keep her young cubs safe, she snarls to maintain some distance, demonstrating might is no match for the strength of motherly love. Aside from drama in the bush, another reason for Botswana’s popular appeal is the quality of luxury lodges available. Arbiters of five-star luxury, the Belmond group has several properties here, including Khwai River Lodge on the edge of Moremi National Park. Set alongside a river, wooden bungalows on raised platforms are kitted out with air-conditioning, fluffy towels and (albeit made from recycled elephant poo) headed notepaper, making the property more akin to a slick hotel than a safari lodge. The option to eat meals in private, rather than at a communal table,

Duba Expedition Camp is far removed from any outside contact. There’s no phone reception, wifi connection or any other lodges. At night, I watch fireflies dance on my porch and wake up in the early hours to hear a lioness shuffling close to my canvas walls with a kill, leaving only drag marks in the dust to tell her tale. Aside from solitude, one of the obvious plus points of Duba is the opportunity to drive off road. Heading out after dawn, we cut through long blades of dew-glistening silky bushman grass, sending startled red lechwes splashing

also better suits some honeymooners. Regardless of accommodation tastes, the quality wildlife sightings and guiding meets any seasoned safarigoer’s expectations. Botswana is one of the best places to see African wild dogs, listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List, and Moremi is a particular hotspot. Packs enjoy complex social relationships, and their hunting game plans are some of the most strategic in the bush, making them fascinating to watch. Our day does not end at sunset, though. After dinner, I join Moses for a night drive, combing woodland for wildlife until 10pm. This late, we’re able to watch a leopard stalking prey as shooting stars pass overhead, and even catch sight of a young aardvark snuffling in the soil. In his 15 years of guiding, this is only the second aardvark Moses has seen, and for the next 48 hours he can’t stop smiling. Glimpsing these nocturnal creatures is rare, but one animal common to Botswana is the elephant. A ban on hunting means numbers here are exceptionally high, representing 40 per cent of Africa’s population. Chobe National Park, on the border of Namibia, attracts vast herds in the dry season (particularly from August to

October) when they come down to drink at the Chobe River. Busy gateway town Kasane is a shocking contrast to the wilderness experience I’ve been enjoying for the past few days. Fortunately, &Beyond’s mobile camp, buried deep in the park’s mahogany woodland, provides an escape route from the limited and congested pathways of the national park. This season the river is at its lowest level for 25 years and much of the greenery has disappeared, leaving waterbuck to gnaw at the skeletons of acacia trees while overheating hippos are forced to graze in the hazy midday sun. Not everyone, though, is so fortunate in the fight for survival. On a late afternoon game drive, we come across an injured and emaciated seven-month-old cub, lagging woefully behind a pride of lions, his low moans lost in the wind. Desperately willing for a textbook Disney outcome, I long for his mother to turn around. She does. But after a brief hesitation, she accepts his fate and walks away. After all, not every story has a happy ending – even in a honeymoon destination. * The writer travelled as a guest of The Ultimate Travel Company.

LOCAL NEWS

GREEN LIGHT BRINGS NEW AIRPORT A STEP CLOSER

W

ork on the $347 million Sunshine Coast Airport expansion is expected to begin before Christmas, with the project receiving the official environmental thumbs up. Last week the Minister for State Development Anthony Lynham released the State Coordinator General’s report approving the Environmental Impact Statement for the project. The project, which includes a new 2450-metre by 45-metre runway, runway end taxiway loops, an expanded apron and terminal facilities and new air traffic control tower, is predicted to boost the local economy by $4.1 billion. Dr Lynham says the Coordinator General’s approval was great news for Sunshine Coast business, community leaders and the tourism industry. “This project opens up the region to more national and international destinations such as Singapore and Perth and has the potential to bring almost half a million more visitors a year to the Coast by 2040. “Most importantly, this will generate 1500 more ongoing jobs by 2040, more

than 80 construction jobs and an estimated $140 million-plus boost to regional economic activity during construction.’’ Potential aircraft noise, flora and fauna habitat and water quality will be managed through recommendations and conditions, Lynham says. “Modelling indicates that, by 2040, the realigned east-west runway could result in almost 5000 fewer dwellings affected by aircraft noise than if the north-south runway had been extended. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the council will now consider the conditions and envisage the new runway will be open for operations in 2020. The Federal Government will now

review the Coordinator General’s report, he adds. “Council looks forward to receiving approvals, due within 30 days of the report being received. Further specific project approvals will also be required before works can commence.” The announcement comes on the back of news that Sunshine Coast Airport is the fastest growing airport in the country for the eighth consecutive month. Recently released data from the Commonwealth Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics confirms a 24 per cent year on year increase in total passengers for the month of February.

MY OPINION

DREAM ON, JARRYD

TEAM NIGELLA FOREVER

Nugget reckons sporting nomad Jarryd Hayne has a few more surprises left up his constantly changing sleeve.

Sami Muirhead salivates over Nigella’s fat-laden cooking and applauds her skill for the witty double entendre.

N

igella Lawson is one sexy woman. The queen of cooking can do no wrong in my eyes. I am sure that recent hiccup where the rich ex-husband advertising idiot bloke accused her of snorting drugs and partying like it was 1999 was a huge misunderstanding. She was dubbed ‘Highella’ in the process. I am sure it was simply icing for her cupcakes. Her double chocolate fudge cupcakes oozing in caramel and served with whipped cream and extra dollops of custard for good measure. Let’s face it, the lady’s cooking is a heart attack on a plate. But I will always be Team Nigella, because she is incredibly funny and smart and is so damn sexy. And politically incorrect. Her curves and posh accent can make cooking meat and three veg sound like some exotic burlesque strip show because she drops fabulous words that sound dirty but are not at all filthy such as ‘moist’ and ‘focaccia’. Ohh, say it again, Nigella! The doyenne of double entendres has just left Australia after filming a few saucy segments for MasterChef. While in the country, Nigella revealed she loves avocado on toast with a certain staple of our diet. “I would have to say, Australia is the country that introduced me to avocado toast, even better sometimes with Vegemite. It’s been good to me,” said the 56-year-old. Bravo, Nigella. Good on

you for boycotting that disgusting Marmite stuff and double points for putting together two of the greatest food groups of all time. Of course, Nigella’s love affair with avocados has been long documented. “That’s a big heap of gorgeousness there.” Nigella was not talking about Dr Chris Brown from Bondi Vet as she licked her lips and purred these words, but was in fact referring yet again to avocado. Another doozy to come out of her mouth? “I love having an implement in each hand. It makes me feel busy.” Um. I am not sure what the hell Nigella is referring to here, but it sounds to me something my kids should not hear their mum ever say. Ever. Like, really, never. Here are some of my other ripping Nigella quotes: “I do not believe in low fat cooking.” We kind of figured that. “Ah, look at these gorgeous, golden globules.” Calm down everyone. N was referring to butter. “I have everything to feed my late night need.” I don’t even know what our empress of the kitchen means here, but it sure sounds sexy and I can’t help but feel I am missing out. And lastly: “Underneath will be a hint of inner thigh wobble.” Cheers to a bit of inner thigh wobble. Just the same as a rich and velvety wine, our Nigella just gets better with age.

W

ell surprise, surprise. Jarryd Hayne has abandoned his NFL ‘dream’ to pursue his new dream of playing 7’s Rugby for Fiji at the Rio Olympic Games in August. Given that Jarryd changes his dreams about as regularly as we recycle Prime Ministers, Nugget has had a look inside the sporting nomad’s Dream Journal to uncover what other dreams Jarryd has in store next.

IN THE SWIM OF IT Given that Jarryd’s ‘dream de jour’ is to be an Olympian, I don’t think that he really minds how he gets to Rio. If Fiji doesn’t accommodate his request in the fastest footy sport in the world, synchronised swimming may be his next option. Being on the bottom of the pool will remind him of the ladder position of his beloved Eels, and given that he grew up in Western Sydney, he’s adept at wearing a clip on his nose to block the smell.

OZZIE OZZIE OZZIE Jarryd’s next dream may not even come on the fields of sporting excellence. TV may hold the key to his future. The kid is apparently dead keen to score the co-hosts gig on a rebooted Hey Hey It’s Saturday. However, he will want to be known as Fiji Ostrich, because he has

made it clear he has no interest in being an ‘Ozzie’.

THE HAYNE PLATE Jarryd has proven that he is quite the raconteur, so it would be no surprise if his next dream saw him whipping up a pressure cooker risotto next to Matt Preston and that angry little Greek bloke on MasterChef. You see it has always been Jarryd’s dream to open a cafe, just like all the misguided accountants and dental hygienists that TV’s version of a compost heap continues to spew out.

THE RETURN OF THE JARRYD-I Jarryd could shock us all and reveal his next dream is a return to the NFL. Maybe while he is there he could actually successfully return a punt, given that’s what the San Francisco 49ers were paying him to do but never actually got.

MAGIC MAN The world of David Copperfield style illusion work may be the next fulfilment of Jarryd’s dreams. I think he could become an escapologist the likes we have not seen since the great Harry Houdini, given that he has now managed to seamlessly escape from not one, but two legally binding contracts.

HEALING PAST HURTS

Lesley and Tammy Williams have risen above hardship and racism to write an award-winning memoir. Words Leigh Robshaw

W

hen you chat with Lesley Williams, it’s easy to forget what a formidable woman she is. A respected Murri elder, she’s the kind of down-to-earth person you feel you could chat with for hours over a pot of tea. Thanks to her efforts over nine years, the Queensland Government paid $55.4 million in lost wages to Queensland Aborigines. Between 1897 and 1971, successive Queensland state governments witheld wages earned by indigenous workers. Determined to see justice, Lesley instigated an investigation which led to the Justice for Aboriginal Workers campaign, where 12,000 indigenous workers were paid part of what they were owed. In most cases, they didn’t even know the money existed. “I felt I achieved something and it wasn’t about Lesley. What was driving me was the memory of the old people; they’re the ones that suffered. Unfortunately my grandparents, as with my parents, as with tens of thousands of others, weren’t alive to see this happen. But there were still a couple of thousand of our elders who did. The important thing was the recognition. They received the offer with an apology from the minister.” In September last year, the outstanding memoir Not Just Black and White, co-written by Lesley and her daughter Tammy, was published to much acclaim. It won a Queensland Literary Award for unpublished indigenous writers and was shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards. It tells the story of Lesley’s life growing up at the Cherbourg Aboriginal Settlement and what happened when she was forced to leave at a young age to work as a domestic servant for a widow in Condamine. Lesley says records show her wages were three pounds, two shillings, or $7 for working every day of the week, from

Lesley Williams (left) and Tammy Williams (inset) early in the morning until late at night. But Lesley – and thousands of other indigenous workers – never received their full wages. The Queensland government controlled the money, giving Lesley only one pound, ten shillings (about $3). Lesley eventually returned to Cherbourg, then married husband Willie and settled in Gympie, where she had two sons and her daughter Tammy. When Willie died suddenly, she was determined not to be a victim. She moved into a housing commission house and drummed into her children the importance of a good education. “Along the way I was also educating myself by being involved in community projects and the school. I was very motivated and I wasn’t going to just sit back and let the grass grow under my feet. I had to create a future for my children.” With money tight, Lesley began delving into old records and wrote her first letter of enquiry to the Queensland Government in 1992. As Lesley chipped away at the bureaucracy, Tammy had become the

target of racist bullying at school. When a student wrote ‘Nigger’ across her school yearbook photo, Lesley told her: “Unfortunately, you’re going to come up against racism throughout our lives, the only way we can deal with it is to rise above it by making sure you get a good education and you can choose to do whatever you want to.” In March 1993, Tammy entered a competition run by Sony Music, writing a five-page letter about her mother’s life. She won first prize and was flown, along with Lesley, to meet Michael Jackson at his Neverland Ranch. The organisers were so taken with Lesley’s story, she was invited to speak with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. “Not in a million years would I ever think I’d be going to another country, let alone gong to America. Someone believed in my daughter and that gave me the confidence to say, I’ve got a story to tell. “I started on this book over 20 years ago,” she says. “I wanted to document our history and it began as a conversation between mother and daughter and

to towards the end, we invited Tammy’s b brothers to be a part of it as well.” Lesley now lives with Tammy and h family in Brisbane. Tammy is now her a leading Brisbane barrister and on A April 18 was appointed Commissioner o the Queensland Family and of Child Commission. Tammy and Lesley will share their story when they visit the Coast in June. “I was always passionate about our history, how I was going to bring it alive and preserve it. We have come a long way but there’s still a long way to go yet. That’s why I’ve been doing these talks. “I’ll be talking about our history and also about the importance of believing in yourself, being positive and staying committed,” she says. “The past has to be acknowledged. It’s about understanding and moving forward.” Lesley doesn’t get involved in politics, but with the election looming there is something she’d like to ask of the next Australian government: “The new government has to be stronger and work with Aboriginal communities and leaders of Aboriginal communities to ensure that all the children are provided with the opportunities we never had. The Constitution is really out of my field, but I would like to see acknowledgement that we were the first people on this land and to acknowledge our presence. We’ve been here for over 50,000 years. It’s about learning more about what happened to Aboriginal people so that we can walk forward as a nation. Knowing the past helps us to understand the present.” Lesley and Tammy Williams will speak at the Voices on the Coast Literary Breakfast, Saturday June 4 at Maroochy Surf Club. FOOD SWAP James Colquhoun from Food Matters gives you some healthy alternatives to five foods that wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels.

D

o you ever have those days when your stomach feels like a bottomless pit? Here are five foods and drinks that will rev up those hunger pangs, and some handy alternatives. 1. WHITE TOAST – Like any refined carbohydrate, white bread is made from a fl flour that is devoid of its bran and fibre co content. This means we digest the starch q quickly, converting it into sugar. The re result? Blood sugar levels spike, then p plummet, and we are left hungry. Instead, ch choose toasted multigrain spelt, so sourdough, gluten-free or sprouted E Essene bread. 2. FRIES – Fries are oozing with fat and 2 smothered in salt; two components that light up our brains with pleasure signals and stimulate our appetite. Better alternatives include a whole-baked jacket potato, sweet potato fries, homemade zucchini chips or even a healthified potato salad.

3: BEER, WINE AND SPIRITS – Alcohol is a known appetite stimulant and will make most people eat more. If you’re going to drink, choose one glass of red wine for its antioxidant quality.

4: CHINESE FAST FOOD (MSG) MSG (E621) is an artificial flavour enhancer commonly used in Chinese takeaway. Research shows regular intake of MSG may override the satiety centres of the brain and contribute to obesity. Choose Chinese restaurants that don’t use MSG or make your own delicious Chinese dishes at home. 5: SUGARY CEREALS – The average kids’ cereal is loaded with almost twice the amount of sugar as adult versions. Feed your kids a wholesome granola, porridge or chia pudding instead. Find out more at foodmatters.com.au.

LITTLE MAY TO PLAY SOLBAR “It’s quite a rare thing for an entire audience to be absolutely captivated during a performance, so much so that not a word is spoken.’’ For any band, this is the ideal critique and it’s exactly how one UK music magazine described Australian band Little May. Following the release of For the Company, the debut that became a Triple J feature album and was followed by an international world tour to support their record, pioneering indie outfit Little May are back on home soil to undertake their biggest Australian tour yet. It’s been a whirlwind two years for the trio, with more than 20 million Spotify streams and airplay across the world. Tonight the band is taking on the crowd at Maroochydore’s Solbar when they hit the stage at 8pm. Little May will perform on May 27. Tickets cost $22 through Oztix or $25 at the door.

While the bread is soaking, melt two tablespoons of butter and two tablespoons of oil in a large non-stick frying pan, over a medium heat. Fry the bread in the pan until each side is golden and the crust is cooked through, about two to three minutes per side. Remove from the pan and coat each piece with the cinnamon sugar. Transfer the French toast to a baking tray and place into the oven to heat through. Repeat the soaking and frying process with all remaining pieces of the bread. For the maple cream, mix the cream and maple syrup together Remove all the French toast from the oven and serve warm with the maple cream.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY COMEDY

TENOR’S GOT TALENT

Sunshine Coast theatre company BATS latest production promises to provide plenty of laughs, and a little drama. The musical Blood Brothers, written by renowned playwright Willy Russell, is set in England in the 1960s and tells the story of fraternal twins who were separated at birth. One brother was raised in poverty with his natural mother and the other was raised in a family of privilege. The play follows the trials and tribulations of the twins, Eddie and Mickey, as they grow into adulthood. Directed by Catherine Steer, Blood Brothers is on through June at Buderim War Memorial Hall.

Tenor Mark Vincent won the hearts of the nation when he took out the 2009 Australia’s Got Talent competition. He is the only classical artist in Australian history to have released six albums by the time he was 20 and he has gone on to sell more than 500,000 albums. Now, he is bringing his big voice to the Coast with his Love Will Lead the Way tour. The 22-year-old will perform songs of the great tenor repertoire including Granada and Nessun and Dorma. Vincent’s concert is at The Events Centre on June 19. Tickets are $69 or $59 for students. Visit theeventscentre.com.au.

FROM MILD TO WILD Lexus takes another step into performance territory with the new GS-F sedan. By Peter Atkinson AAP

T

he evolution of the Lexus brand from mild to wild has taken another step forward. Once the cardigan-clad member of the luxury car class, Lexus has dazzled with its aggressive styling and growing family of high-performance variants over the past couple of years to pump some much-needed fizz into their

model lineup. The latest weapon in that charm offensive is the GS-F – a performanceenhanced version of the Japanese brand’s least-prolific model – the executive-sized GS luxury sedan. The GS has been something of an under-achiever in the Lexus lineup. While models like the compact-sized

IS and plush RX SUV have really taken the fight up to their Mercedes, BMW and Audi rivals – the GS has remained a bit player in the high-end executive sedan market. That’s partly, I suspect, because the GS was primarily aimed at American drivers, for whom a long equipment list and plush driving characteristics are valued above dynamic driver engagement. Aussies, by

contrast, love their HSVs and AMGs. As a result, the GS has never really defined itself against its rivals – icons like the luxury-focused E-Class Benz, sportier 5-Series Beemer, technology-rich Audi A6 and Jaguar’s impressive XF. That equation seems to have been addressed somewhat with this latest GS – particularly with the addition of the GS-F which will add a new, very desirable halo variant to the model range relaunched last year. The GS-F, the fourth member of the high-performance ‘F’ family, is going to turn the heads of some buyers for whom a German marque is the be-all and end-all. It’s big, refined and handsome and has 351 glorious kilowatts under the bonnet – the most powerful Lexus sedan ever. Significantly, the GS-F arrives on the market at a price more than $50-grand below the asking price of comparable European options. The GS-F delivers comparably explosive performance to those Euro heros – although, as is typical of these executive express models – the sledgehammer performance is clad in a wonderfully refined and plush everyday driving experience. You could easily drive the GS-F all continued over>

MOTORING

<from previous page week and barely notice how much potency lurks at the upper end of its performance range. An eight-speed automatic, quiet and silky power delivery from its big V8 and the kind of serene, pillowy cabin ambience expected of the Lexus brand make it a civilised everyday conveyance. In terms of performance and dynamic ability, the GS-F doesn’t match its most recent F-badged sibling, the gorgeous two-door RC-F unveiled last year. But that car was built from the ground up as a high-performance machine, while the GS-F started its life as a luxury sedan that’s turned altogether racy. And its buyers will be very different, too – more likely to be middle-aged executives looking for a machine that elevates them a rung or two above their corporate colleagues while still providing practical, luxurious motoring for an entire family. And in that regard the GS-F certainly hits the brief. The attractions of the standard GS model are magnified in this highperformance variant. Sure, you get the same Mark Levinson audio with no fewer than 17 speakers, a beautifully appointed and finished cockpit with wide, vivid colour screen (and Lexus’ somewhat

fiddly Lexus Touch system) and the kind of appointments this Japanese marque is renowned for. A sophisticated torque vectoring differential helps deliver maximum grip to the big, sticky tyres; integrated vehicle dynamics provide some electronic stability while massive Brembo brakes keep it all on the smooth stuff. Pre-collision system, active cruise, lane keeping assist and adaptive high-beam are among the driver aides. There’s also a

“But the real magic of this car is to be found when you push the accelerator all the way to the floor” clever head-up display for monitoring speed and engine revs. Lexus has developed a unique Active Sound Control system to enhance the engine’s note, which it claims delivers a ‘more baritone’ sound at lower revs and ‘heightens the aural experience’ as the engine revs rise. The system actually uses some of those 17 audio speakers to electronically synthesise the fabulous

engine note. The sports seats are superb – wraparound, fully bolstered in aniline or alcantera leather. The chunky steering wheel is clad in leather and is heated by the Lexus ‘climate concierge’ system. But the real magic of this car is to be found when you push the accelerator all the way to the floor. The 5-litre V8 erupts (although in a very civilised, linear fashion) as it carves its way through the gears and the horizon starts to converge rather rapidly. It possibly doesn’t pack the same punch as BMW’s turbocharged V8 M5, Audi’s prodigious RS6 or Benz’s E63. But it’s at least as much as any car-loving executive could ask for. Outside, the GS-F is reasonably understated, as these executive express models tend to be. It looks aggressive enough with an enhanced body kit and the 19-inch polished alloy wheels of our test vehicle were the prettiest we’ve seen. Our car looked resplendent in a superb metallic black duco that set off the designer’s combination of concave and convex body panels – typical of the new Lexus design language. It’s a perfect expression of the new Lexus marketing position – still posh, but no longer prudish.

LEXUS GS-F HOW BIG? It’s a full-sized five-seater – more than big enough for a growing family yet amply nimble to drive through the twisty bits. HOW FAST? Seriously. The speed limit arrived in 4.6 seconds which is genuine hot-rod territory. HOW THIRSTY? Official consumption is 11.3L/100km – pretty decent for a car with so much urge. The eight-speed auto means it’s pretty frugal on a trip, too. HOW MUCH? It starts from a touch under $160,000, including onroad costs, which makes it the bargain buy of this executive express class.

Just as good the second time around. Mercedes-Benz Certified vehicles. Available now at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast.

THE CHANGING FACE OF BLI BLI

O

nly eight months in and 230 lots in the Parklakes 2 have sold, confirming a strong interest in the masterplanned community. The community, located in Bli Bli, isn’t limited to housing. It also features over 50s lifestyle village Halcyon Lakeside, which has almost sold out stage one in the first three months since its release, and is in close proximity to schools, childcare centres, shops, a golf course, soccer fields and greenspace including barbecue areas. Parklakes 2 developer Robert Flipp says the combination of the residential estate and Halcyon Lakeside is attracting a range of multi-generational buyers. “It’s the community spirit underlining this project that makes it so special; ensuring the investment stays within the local region,” he says. One of the first residents to call Parklakes 2 home is Dr Christopher Walker and his wife, Katie who moved into the estate in March. Dr Walker has been heavily involved with the Parklakes project in his role as environmental manager at Covey Associates, who are the principal

engineers for the development. “I know the product the developers produce and how much they care about the community they are creating, and that’s one of the reasons why we chose to invest and live at Parklakes 2. “We love Bli Bli, I’ve been working in Bli Bli since 2007 and it has changed quite a bit. I am not surprised it’s become so popular because it’s close to everything, but it’s still quiet – it’s not in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. “Parklakes 2 offers a lot of things that other residential estates can’t. You can be

in the hinterland, but also within ten minutes of Mudjimba Beach and Sunshine Plaza and the new Maroochydore CBD is less than 15 minutes’ drive away – it’s very convenient.” Halcyon Lakeside spokesperson Chris Carley says his buyers are also attracted to the benefits of being part of a quality residential community. “Parklakes 2 is located well away from the highway so it’s very quiet, the air is clean and fresh and our residents will enjoy everything the masterplanned

community has to offer. “It’s ideal for those people wanting to enjoy a range of community amenities as well as the privacy to relax or lock up and travel should they desire. “It’s lock and go freedom which is rarely found in any residential community and best of all residents will enjoy the Sunshine Coast’s most comprehensive over 50s five-star resort facilities along with the upgraded shopping amenities including the Supa IGA, 13 speciality retail, commercial and medical outlets which are all less than a few minutes’ drive away.’’ Earlier this year the $20 million Bli Bli Village Centre was approved by Sunshine Coast Council. Developer Michael White says around half of the project is already committed, the majority to health and wellbeing businesses, while a number of spaces are still available to lease.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

It’s on like Donkey Kong! If you have not seen the footage coming out of Fiji with monster swell hitting Cloudbreak get online and have a look. Some big kahunas required! I would not even know what to do if one of those waves broke on my head – laugh at my immediate demise? OK, this weekend looks like it could be a bit of fun with offshore conditions and blue skies predicted. Will be small but super fun so get amongst it. Temps seem beautiful so should not be too cold although the west winds might play a part. I hope you have a great time!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are moving in over both Maroochy and Mooloolah bars and working around snags and bridge pylons seeking food. A few sand and mud crabs are in the deeper channels in both rivers. Whiting are taking yabbies and worms at Cotton Tree on the rising tide. Flathead are on the drift using whitebait and lures right along the Twin Waters river banks. SURF: An angler’s paradise with sea bream and flathead taking pillies from Point Cartwright to Pincushion, dawn and dusk are the best. Chopper tailor can be found at Alexandra Headland with slugs working, especially if it’s sunny. OFFSHORE: The Gneerings and Murphy’s reef are returning mixed reef fish on squid and mullet strips, however, undersize fish are a problem and must be returned to the water. Caloundra Six Mile is firing for parrot and sweetlip. Snapper and pearl perch are on the edge of the Barwon Banks. FRESHWATER: The upper reaches of the Maroochy and Noosa Rivers are still working for small bass on lures and floated baits. Drop offs and logs are worth a cast, so rely on your sounder. Somerset and Bjelke Peterson dams are slowing down with the cooler conditions, but red claw are still plentiful. Lake Baroon and Macdonald are always worth a visit this time of year with bass taking lures right along the weed line. Better quality are being caught using spinner baits.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] You’re impatient to make changes but avoid charging in with guns blazing, and don’t underestimate the value of examining people and situations in a careful and considered way. The devil is definitely in the detail as you have a serious second-look.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Avoid the temptation to rush communication and jump to crazy conclusions this week. It will be very easy to over-extend yourself and then find you’ve bitten off more than you can chew! So re-calibrate your expectations and pace yourself.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] You won’t feel particularly confident, energetic or motivated on Thursday, when nebulous Neptune squares the sun (and takes the gas out of your tank). So use the prevailing astro-winds wisely as you wind down, relax and recharge!

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] This week you’re preoccupied with serious issues as you read, write or research. It’s also a terrific time to delve into a mystery, solve a problem or be a detective and find something that’s been missing. But don’t assume you know what others are thinking and feeling.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] With Saturn reversing through your conversation and travel zone expect frustrations involving cars, computers or communication. A relationship [or an idea] seems too good to be true on Friday … and then you are brought down to earth with a thud on Saturday.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Smart Scorpios know that success doesn’t just drop out of the sky. So this week’s stars are super for utilizing every opportunity that comes your way, as you make things happen through consistent hard work, awesome organisation and forensic attention to details.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Rushing a personal project seems like a good idea, but it will just cause problems further down the track. With Saturn reversing through your sign, slow and steady wins the race. And don’t let what’s happened in the past mar relations with others.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Expect some frustrations, delays or challenges this week as Saturn (your patron planet) seems to stymie every move you make. Don’t waste time stressing and worrying! Use the down time to review your approach, revise your ideas and reassess your plans.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Money matters will be confusing this week, as nebulous Neptune scrambles your antennae and confuses communication. Don’t accept things at face value. Make sure you fine-tune financial figures, double-check paperwork and (if in doubt) get a second opinion.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] The focus is on family matters as the planets highlight your home zone. But it will be very easy to misconstrue what others say so don’t hesitate to ask for some clarification. Saturn sends a reality check (on Friday or Saturday) so take your head out of the clouds and get real.

Solve all the clues and reveal the eight-letter word spelled down the middle of the grid.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Financial matters look confusing, as you underestimate a major expense or waste money via an inappropriate purchase. You could also doubt your ability to follow through with a major project or promise. Just take things one step at a time.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Avoid being insensitive and passing on unsubstantiated information. Clear, careful communication will help improve relations with family and friends, as you get your message out loud and clear. Use your intuition to guide you.

THE LAST WORD

DOLLARS AND SENSE Richard O’Leary eyes off a comfortable retirement thanks to his son’s recent entrepreneurial efforts.

S

o I have just become a little more comfortable about my retirement. Not right this minute, probably not for a while yet I suspect. But when I do turn off that work computer for the last time, return the standing desk to the sitting position and walk away for the last time (before temporarily returning because I have forgot my keys, wallet, or phone), I’m now confident I will exit in a sound financial position. Superannuation? Doubt it. Inheritance? Unlikely. Canny financial investment decisions? Hardly. No, it is much more simple than that. I am the father of an entrepreneur and if I’ve done my sums correctly, it won’t be long before he is loaded, and surely he wouldn’t mind passing on a bit of his hard-earned to that bloke who helped raise him? But I jump ahead. Let me take you to where it all started.

A few months ago my seven-year-old went to a lawn sale with his mum, one of his favourite Saturday pastimes. I have to admit, when he returned home and emptied a garbage bag of embroidered soccer and military badges onto our sofa, I had my doubts. “How much were they?” I asked. “Free,” he beamed. Little did I know he already had a business plan mapped out in his head. His first target was to sell the badges to his friends, but that was difficult at a school without a tuckshop – no-one had money. Undeterred, he decided to broaden his market. He started with a makeshift stall at Cotton Tree Park; a handwritten sign Blu-Tacked to a bench seat advertised one badge for two dollars, or two for three dollars. It wasn’t easy at first, but he persevered. After 45 minutes on a hot

Mother’s Day, he broke through for his first sale, when a young father bought two badges. I took the obligatory photo and we packed up shortly after. I thought that would be the end of it. But no, a few weeks later he decided to have another crack – this time at Moffat Beach. Sales were brisk – it helps when you bump into your old neighbour on the way to setting up the stall (thanks John). But a couple of young women rewarded his get-up-and-go attitude and took up his new offer of five for $5 dollars – although they were happy to get just two. After an hour or so he’d earnt $16 – and by my reckoning when you buy your product for nothing and make $16 on it – that works out at approximately a gazillion per cent profit. Let’s just hope he turns out to be more Dick Smith than Clive Palmer. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
