OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
ne of my first memories is yelling to be let off The Octopus at a country show, and then throwing up once safely back on ground. Thankfully my more recent experiences have been far less traumatic as I have introduced my boys to the magic of rides, show bags and the agricultural exhibits. In this week’s feature story, Candice Holznagel takes you behind the scenes of the Sunshine Coast shows to reveal all the colour, characters, and the stiff competition for best chook. Also this week, you get to meet the woman showing the men how it’s done in rally racing, travel to the Maldives, and have a quick chat with Seven newsreader Jo Desmond. As well, you get all the latest tips on technology, beauty advice, some life lessons, see who has been out and about, and find the best places to go this weekend. All this and plenty of property to help you find that perfect home. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
FACE TIME
Channel 7 newsreader Jo Desmond turned down the job of a lifetime interstate to settle down on the Sunshine Coast and raise four sons. WHERE ON THE COAST DO YOU LIVE?
often head up to Eumundi Markets.
I’ve spent the last 12 years in Buderim, which I absolutely loved, but we just recently moved to Alexandra Headland. It’s so fantastic being able to wander down to the beach for a run or to walk the dog – and the kids are enjoying being so close to the surf.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? It would be great to be able to find the solution to our increasing traffic congestion.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
FIRST JOB?
The four best days were when each of my boys were born.
As a teenager I was horse mad and my first job at 13 was working at a racing stable, feeding horses and mucking out stables. It was dirty work but I loved it.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
I was offered an incredible job interstate but had just met the man of my dreams – so I turned down the job to start a life with him and begin to raise a family instead.
Trying to slow down.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES…
YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
My amazing husband John, and our four boys ranging in age from 10 to 18 years old – and our border collie, Ollie.
No regrets – I love looking to the future, not the past. You can’t wonder what might have been, because at the time the decision was the right one.
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
Generally people just call me Jo, although a few close friends call me JoJo.
My boys!
FIRST CAR?
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
A Toyota Corolla that I bought from my Nana.
I’m surrounded by my family and friends.
FAVOURITE BOOK?
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
There are far too many to mention – my bookcase is crammed.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW?
I’ve been here for 13 years, and still feel like there are so many places to explore.
I’ve just finished reading Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.
FAVOURITE SONG? I don’t really have an all-time favourite. I get a new favourite every time I hear the latest top 40, although I love reminiscing to all the ‘80s music that transports me back to my childhood.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? “You don’t know what goes on behind closed doors – so never assume anything about anyone.” And another favourite that I live my life by is, “If it’s meant to be, it will happen easily.”
People who gossip.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH YOUR FRUSTRATIONS? Ignore it – and always take people at face value.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I just love it – the beach, sun, freedom, the relaxed lifestyle and it’s such a great place to raise our family.
Dream big – as you can be whoever you want to be.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE, TEA OR COFFEE?
Enjoying a coffee with friends on a glorious day, overlooking Noosa main beach.
Coffee – espresso if it’s a good brew, otherwise a double shot skinny latte.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? We always spend time at the beach, coffee shops, and

GOOD CLEAN FUN
It’s not all about rides and showbags – the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show puts our producers in the spotlight. WORDS: Candice Holznagel
“We’ve gone back to our grassroots, where we are staying very firmly. We are teaching children the value of growing their own food.”

xcitement floats through the crisp evening air as people, rugged up in their winter woollies, weave in and out of sideshow alley. There are squeals from thrill-seekers as they venture onto rides and with the technicolour lights brightening the night sky and the smell of dagwood dogs and crunch of toffee apples, there is something special about a town’s annual show. Jessica and Jasmine Wholton will be among the thousands of students heading to this year’s Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show. However, their focus won’t be on the carnival rides but instead on what is inside the old pavilion buildings – the backbone of the Show. The pavilions and pens will play host to hundreds of competition entries, exhibits and displays ranging from cookery, craft, and photography through to dairy goats and cattle. But it will be the clucking and clawing from the poultry yards that will grab the sisters’ attention. The girls are two of the youngest competitors in this year’s poultry section, which is expected to attract up to 280 entrants. It’s an unusual hobby and yet that hasn’t deterred these girls, who are members of the Nambour Poultry Club. 12 My Weekly Preview | June 10, 2016
12.indd 1
“There are so many enjoyable things about poultry from preparing the birds, showing them, working to improve the genetics, meeting new people and so much more,’’ 17-year-old Jasmine says. “Many of my friends have different views on it, some think it’s cool, others think it’s weird, but I don’t really mind what people’s opinions are because it is something I enjoy. “My favourite part of poultry
The girls, together with their stepdad Allen Burton, have been readying their birds for the big event. “Without the help of my amazing stepdad I would never be able to look after the chooks by myself,’’ Jasmine says. “We have a few hundred and they require daily feeding and watering, plus the time put in to prep the birds for show – cleaning, penning, patting.’’ The girls have learned everything they

showing is being able to enjoy what I love with others and to learn everything I can about poultry.” At last year’s Show Jasmine took home the novice champion ribbon and this time around she will be entering the Pekins, Plymouth Rocks and Old English Spangles sections. Meanwhile, nine-year-old Jessica will show an Old English and a Pekin bird.
know from Burton, who has been hand-raising poultry since he was a child. To say he is a familiar face at the annual agricultural show is an understatement. He has been an exhibitor at the event for the past 33 years. “I started showing when I was seven years old,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview.
“Going back years and years ago my great grandfather had show poultry. The family over the years had show cattle for a long time.” Burton is not only the Nambour and District Poultry Club president and chief steward but has been chief steward at the Show for the past 10 years. It’s a coveted role that has only been held by a handful of people during the 111-year history. “I basically head the section… collate entries, decide where the birds go, when they get fed, oversee judging. “It’s getting harder to get entries these days. There are some younger generations in it and older guys who have been there for 50 or so years with the mix of youth coming through.’’ Despite what some people think, a community’s annual show isn’t about costly rides, fairy floss and show bags – there is much more to it than that, Burton says. It’s a chance for farmers to show and promote their produce and a good chance to raise awareness of how important it is to support the agricultural industry. “Being a farmer, I know what’s involved but if we keep the same mentality that’s been going on the past few generations, people won’t realise that myweeklypreview.com.au

are hoping this year with a lot more support and education and public awareness that we’ll have a good range of public support.” With the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show celebrating its 111th anniversary in 2016, the question must be asked: will the event survive another century? McKay hopes it does. “As a passionate show supporter, definitely yes, but it’s up to the community. If the community don’t see that they own this event… it will struggle. The region needs to get
behind it, whether that be the Maleny or Nambour Show. “Come pat a cow, see the different animals. I ask that they come out in droves. “We have no regulations about bringing your own food and drink. There is great entertainment at night in the ring… all day. “I think there is never an argument about value… if you are going to do everything that’s free. It’s really about family choice. There is more than enough to do.’’
SUNSHINECOASTSHOW.ASN.AU
their food doesn’t come from a supermarket. It comes from a farm. “We need to get that involvement with people and show them why it comes from a farm and why you need to look after your primary producers. At the end of the day you rely on your primary producers for meals three times a day.’’ Show stalwart Jenny McKay could not agree more. The Sunshine Coast councillor and Show committee president has been attending the Nambour event her entire life and has been involved with the Show society for two decades. As with many things, the Show has had to reinvent itself, with so many alternative opportunities now available for breeders to sell their lines. It has moved away from being a main sale venue for breeders and instead is now focused on teaching the community about where food comes from and how to grow produce in their own backyards. “I’ve seen the changing faces of the Show but one of the focuses is to teach the young people about where their food supply is coming from,’’ McKay says. “We’ve gone back to our grassroots, where we are staying very firmly. We are teaching children the value of growing their own food. There is a children’s grow section so they can dig potatoes out of the ground. “We are finding across Queensland where we collect data, there is a resurgence of young families coming back to the shows. They are starting to realise the importance of the event for the region. “It challenges me to ask why everyone and anyone on the Sunshine Coast wouldn’t want to turn up (to an event) where they are saluting the farmer and agricultural industry. “It’s absolutely imperative to know about our food supply and food security and where it’s coming from. “To be honest we have seen a decline (in attendance numbers) but we

LOOKING BACK The first show was held in Woombye just five kilometres south of the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show’s present home in Nambour on June 3, 1900. Gate takings for the day were around $3500 in today’s currency and 1500 people attended. The event featured a small ring with seats around the perimeter made from rounds of timber blocks and fitches of waste timber. A pavilion was built of forked posts and round bush timber to house displays of cooking, needlework, school work and floral art. There were only three sideshow alley rides, including a merry-go-round. In 1909 and 1910 the Show was established at the present day Showgrounds at Nambour.

We rely on community donations to care for these cats and dogs who may have been abandoned, surrendered or found wandering the streets. Phone Rosy on 0438 544 082.
SURVIVORS IN RACE FOR THEIR LIVES Hundreds of breast cancer survivors will join together in a show of strength next week as Dragons Abreast Australia hosts its annual regatta at Lake Kawana. The national organisation comprises survivors of various ages from different backgrounds, athletic abilities and interests. They aim to raise awareness and early detection of the disease by participating in dragon boat racing. The two-day national regatta will kick off on Friday June 17. HUGE RISE IN OVERSEAS VISITORS TO COAST A 40.8 per cent increase in American tourists, a 95 per cent increase in visitor nights by Germans and continued growth in the New Zealand market has seen the Sunshine Coast record a 7.1 per cent increase in international visitor nights to 2.9 million visitor nights in the year ending March 2016, according to International Visitor Survey statistics from Tourism Research Australia. “The massive increase in international visitor nights and expenditure is a result of our targeted activity in the traditionally long-stay and high-yield American and European markets over the past year,” says acting CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast, Simon Latchford.
NEW TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION Residents wanting to understand how the latest smart city technologies work can visit Sunshine Coast Council’s Smart Centre in Bulcock Street, Caloundra, which showcases real-time results of technology council is trialling. The council is using Caloundra as a ‘living lab’ to test the technologies before installing them across the region. Councillor Steve Robinson says technology being tested ranges from parking apps and free high speed public Wi-Fi to real time transport information, bin sensors to improve waste collection and smart lighting systems.
GETTING IT BUILT
The Sunshine Coast’s infrastructure needs have been tabled with the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. Sunshine Coast Council Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer presented the priorities to Minister Darren Chester who visited the region last week. “With representatives from the council, Sunshine Coast Business Council, chambers of commerce and individual business operators in the room, the minister was left in no doubt the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion Project, Bruce Highway upgrade and the North Coast Rail Line duplication between Beerburrum and Nambour were our three priorities,’’ Dwyer says.
RED CROSS THANKS YOUNG FOR BLOOD Little Mountain resident Don Young knows how important it is to donate blood. In fact, he is looking forward to being presented with his gold medallion award from the Red Cross Blood Bank after making his 300th donation of blood and plasma last month. That medallion will add to the bronze, two silver and gold medallions he previously received since he began donating in 1973. “For a long time I have considered this was my way of contributing to the community and people with great need for blood and blood products,’’ he says.

June is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month and an opportunity to learn and act on the symptoms of the second most common cause of cancer related deaths in Australia. Almost 15,000 Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year and about 80 die from the disease every week. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service gastroenterologist Dr Andrew Sloss says the good news is 90 per cent of bowel cancer cases can be successfully treated if detected early. “Risk factors for bowel cancer include family history, smoking, excess alcohol intake, lack of exercise and an unhealthy diet.”

PROFILE
TAYLOR MADE FOR RALLY DRIVING
Molly Taylor will burn some serious rubber when she arrives on the Coast for the International Rally of Queensland. Words Leigh Robshaw
M
olly Taylor is doing her bit to put to rest the age old belief that men are better drivers than women – at least on the international rally car circuit. She’s Australia’s only full-time professional rally car driver, male or female, was the only female driver in the 2011 World Rally Championship and made history at Quit Forest Rally WA 2015 by becoming the first female driver ever to win a heat in the Australian Rally Championship. She contested all of the 2015 rounds in WA, ACT, QLD, NSW and SA to finish second overall for the season. She even went so far as to get her truck licence so she could drive her car on a semi-trailer from Sydney to Perth. The truck had no air-con and broke down four times across the Nullarbor. “It was a very long, hot trip but we made it,” she laughs. “It was for the first round of the 2015 Australian Championships and I won the first heat when we got there.” Taylor capped off the year by winning the 2015 Peter Brock Medal, one of the most prestigious awards in motorsport. The 28-year-old Sydney woman this year joined Subaru Australia as its newest ambassador and is heading to the Sunshine Coast to compete in the International Rally of Queensland on June 17 to 19. She’ll be fanging around the hinterland in a turbocharged all-wheel drive WRX STI NR4, aiming to beat a field of 44 competitors from here and overseas. She may be only a handful of women who’ve made a mark in the sport, but it’s in her blood. Her mum, born on the Sunshine Coast and now based in Sydney, is four-time Australian Rally champion co-driver Coral Taylor. Her dad is former state and national competitor, Mark Taylor and her grandfather was the late Norm Fritter, also a rally car driver.
“Growing up, I used to love watching it but I never thought about competing myself. It wasn’t until I was getting my P-plates and my father was running a rally school and got my sister and me in so we could learn how to drive. That really opened my eyes. Until then I thought it was cool, but to experience it myself was something completely different. “It’s difficult to describe the feeling. For me it’s the adrenaline rush and the competitive edge. To be able to manipulate a car on a loose surface and have that feeling of the car moving underneath you and that challenge of trying to drive to the maximum limit. I love that sensation.” Taylor went to Europe in 2009 to chase her dream of a professional driving career. She was named British Ladies champion two years in a row, won the inaugural European Rally Championship Ladies Trophy and was officially recognised as the fastest female rally driver in the world (2013).
“I moved to Europe on my own when I was 20 with no money and it was really tough,” she says. “I wanted to benchmark myself against the guys competing at the time and if I wanted to have a crack at doing it full-time, I had to go to where the hottest competition was.” Taylor was conscious of being a woman in a male dominated sport and had to prove she was up to the task. “I was self-conscious going over there, as any young driver is, but I was very determined. I knew I’d be putting in the extra hard work and going that extra mile to prove I was there for the right reasons.” Her determination was cemented when she met two of her idols, French former rally driver Michèle Mouton and her co-driver Fabrizia Pons, who raced the infamous Group B supercars of the 1980s. “The Group B cars were incredibly powerful and difficult to drive,” Taylor says. “Michelle was the only female and they won the championship and won a few events. I really admired her attitude.
When I went to Europe I got to work with both of them and learn from them. That was really surreal for me. These people you idolise, they’re so down to earth.” Taylor says while women are still a minority in the sport, it’s changing at a rapid pace. “Naturally women are not as strong as men at a base level so I put in extra time at the gym to make sure I’m at a level where I’m strong enough. A female can be at the level of strength required and can be fit enough – it’s definitely achievable. “For me it was never an issue. If you expect different treatment people will make a big deal about it. But when people see you’re working hard and you’re professional and you can deliver results, your gender is irrelevant.” Taylor is excited to return to the Sunshine Coast to race, saying the terrain presents distinct challenges. “It has a red clay surface so it either has heaps of grip or none, depending on whether it’s wet or dry,” she says. “The stages of the race have a mix of some really far stages, which are normally my favourite because they’re high speed. There are some really technical twisty stages and it’s normally quite an endurance event.” Rally drivers reach speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour through the potential death trap of forests, within a hair’s breadth of trees that could easily take the car (and its driver) out, but Taylor says she doesn’t feel any fear. “I get nervous before every event and that’s normal and keeps me alert, but I don’t feel fear as such. Crashing is an inevitable part of motorsport and accidents do happen. I’ve rolled some cars and walked away without a scratch. I haven’t injured myself, but the cars have been injured. If you’re scared of what you’re doing you’re probably not focusing on the right things.”

DID YOU KNOW
VOTING RULES HAVE CHANGED?
Make your vote count this federal election Saturday 2 July At this year’s federal election, the way you vote for the Senate has changed and it’s important that you understand how to vote correctly. On the large white Senate ballot paper, you can choose to vote either above or below the line. If you choose to vote above the line, you now need to number at least 6 boxes. Put the number ‘1’ in the box for the party or group that is your first choice, a ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you’ve numbered at least 6 boxes.
If you choose to vote below the line, you need to number at least 12 boxes, from 1 to 12, for individual candidates in the order of your choice. Voting for the House of Representatives has not changed. On the green ballot paper, you need to number every box, starting with the number ‘1’ for your first choice, ‘2’ for your second choice and so on until you have numbered every box. ‘How to vote’ instructions will be clearly displayed on your ballot paper. Don’t worry if you make a mistake — just ask for another ballot paper.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

WHO CAN YOU TRUST WITH YOUR SMSF? Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
S
elf Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSF) have been growing at such an incredible rate over the past few years that it has awoken the ATO beast to start looking at how trustees are keeping house. So, let’s review the basics. The main elements of a SMSF include: the trust deed, the trust, the trustee and its members. Each element has a part to play and once established, a SMSF could be likened to a game of backyard cricket. Let me explain. The rules by which the game is played are set out in the trust deed, the trust maybe likened to an esky, a place where the assets are held, the members of the fund are the players and the trustee is the umpire. It is the trustee’s role to ensure that the
22 My Weekly Preview | June 10, 2016
22.indd 1
rules established prior to play are followed e.g. ensuring that players don’t visit the esky too early. One point of difference between your standard game of backyard cricket and our analogy is the inclusion of a governing body – the ATO. Unlike your average game of backyard cricket where the rules are determined by the host, in the SMSF realm the ATO is boss. It could be compared to a neighbour who refuses to throw the ball back after a player has hit a six-and-out. Furthermore, it has the ability to take up to half the contents of the esky and shut down the game. Other things to consider regarding SMSF’s are: it must have a maximum of four members; all members must be trustees and there can be no other trustees; no member is allowed to be an employee of another member (or of an associated person), unless they are a relative of a member; and trustees are prohibited (generally) from receiving remuneration for their trustee duties. Two elements worth focusing on more are the trust deed and the trustee.
Firstly, the trust deed in effect sets out provisions to govern the trust. It is important that the provisions take into consideration things that may happen now and possibly in the future. Secondly, the trustee has the most critical of jobs as it is personally liable for any actions of the fund. It must ensure that the fund complies with
“. . .don’t get caught short as the penalties are extreme” superannuation(SIS) legislation, regulations and the provisions set out in the trust deed to ensure the fund is entitled to the tax concessions that apply to complying funds. The role of trustee may be carried out through a company or by the trustees personally. Whichever the case, superannuation legislation places the same responsibilities on corporate trustee directors as it does on
individual trustees. As trustee, the legislation requires you to act honestly in all matters; exercise the same degree of care, skill and diligence as an ordinary prudent person; act in the best interest of the fund members; keep the assets of the fund separate from other assets and develop and implement an investment strategy. Reading through the list it sounds achievable and it is, but don’t get caught short as the penalties are extreme. Thankfully, trustees can engage other people to do certain acts on their behalf, however the trustees are bound to retain control over the fund. The ultimate responsibility and accountability for running the fund in a prudent manner lies with the trustees. Are you the right person for a SMSF? KNOCK, KNOCK REMOTE This is the answer for those people who have a love for home-based smart devices. Knocki gives users control of functions through nearby surfaces. With the Knocki there is no need to navigate the maze of mobile apps and smart switches. The small wireless device transforms walls, tables and benches into easy-toaccess remotes. You can dim your lights, turn your television on or stream music with a simple knock. The device can be discreetly mounted under a table or bench top surface. More than $600,000 has been pledged for the campaign through crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. For more visit kickstarter.com.
ROBOTIC PHONE
INSTANT ACCESS This new smartphone app will help state school parents stay connected and engaged with their child’s education. The QParents app was launched in late May and gives parents 24-hour, direct access to children’s personal details and education records. It also allows parents to pay school invoices online. Student absences can also be reported online. The app was trialled in almost 300 schools before its release. The QParents app is available from the App Store and will be available for Android devices this month. It will be progressively rolled out to schools.
The world’s first robotic mobile phone RoBoHon, a pocket-size walking and dancing robot, has gone on sale in Japan, with a cafe being opened so customers can test the product. The human-shaped smartphone, developed by Japanese company Sharp and engineer Tomotaka Takahashi, inventor of the first robot astronaut Kirobo, went on sale late last month with a base price of Y198,000 ($A2500). The Japanese electronics manufacturer is producing 5000 units per month. Apart from being used as a mobile, the 19.5-centimetre-tall humanoid robot weighing 390 grams could be used as a projector to display video, photos or maps. RoBoHon can also recognise faces of people using its front camera and then address them by name. AAP
LATEST PODCASTS BOWRAVILLE Hailed as Australia’s own Serial-type podcast, Bowraville chronicles the shocking true crime story in which three aboriginal children were murdered in the small New South Wales town. Narrated by crime reporter Dan Box, the new podcast investigates police handling of the infamous case, which at the time went relatively unnoticed by the wider community. The victims disappeared from within 400 metres of each other during a period of five months and yet police did not acknowledge that they may have been dealing with a serial killer. The podcast takes listeners from the early days through to the New South Wales police’s current bid to prosecute under a single trial. It delves into the deeper issues of racism and politics. Swap bronzer for blush
SLIM DOWN WITH 80/20 DIET US actor Olivia Munn followed a strict 80/20 diet to slim down for her role in X-Men: The Apocalypse and says her whole body changed as a result. She realised her usual regime of personal training and nd “just trying to eat in a healthy way” wasn’t cutting ng it. So she followed a regime of eating only fruit and vegetables 80 per cent of the time and whateverr she wanted 20 per cent of the time. She says she e lost 5.5 kilos and felt light and energetic as a result. ult. It’s an approach favoured by other celebrities, including Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bündchen. Itt seems to work due to its moderate allowance off treats, which helps avoid the feelings of deprivation tion associated with regular diets. But really, who wants ants to eat only fruit and veg 80 per cent of the time?
Ditch the summer bronzer and get that ‘I’ve just come back from a brisk walk in the forest’ glow with Maybelline’s Master Glaze Blush Stick. Designed to deliver a dewy shine to the skin, it’s formulated with liquid shimmer pearls and shea butter. The cream formula melts on contact with the skin for smooth application. Available in four shades (Pinched Pink pictured), $15.95 from Priceline and department epartment stores.
YES GIRLS, YOU CAN SHAVE Marilyn Monroe did it, Elizabeth Taylor did it and now popular Australian beauty blogger Chloe Morello has admitted she does it too. She recently shared with her 1.7 million YouTube subscribers she shaves her face. It’s called dermaplaning and it’s a way of removing peach fuzz and creating a smooth surface on which to apply foundation. Morello says: “It makes such a big difference, shaving your face is not scary guys, it does not come back thicker it does not come back black, all that happens is your face is smooth as a damn dolphin… It makes a huge difference when applying your foundation.” No special equipment required, just a small razor that you keep specifically for your face.
Glitter for grown-ups Glitter has made a comeback on the catwalks, which means we’ll soon see it filtering through to the makeup of mere mortals. It’s a fun way to add a sparkly dimension to your makeup, but don’t overdo it. Just apply a little on the lid, or in the corners of your eyes for a grown-up glitter effect. Try M.A.C. MY LIFE
MAGIC HERBS If you’re feeling wired but tired, adaptogenic herbs can help you find your balance, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.
T
he effect of constant stress and stimulation is that our body gets a prolonged dose of all those stress chemicals that were initially designed to help our bodies deal with a short-term physical threat. This may cause your adrenal glands to stop working effectively and can also lead to a host of health problems. These range from inflammation, chronic disease and heart issues, to weight gain, insomnia, and much more. You may also feel ‘wired but tired’ – in other words, stressed and exhausted but unable to find restorative rest. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic therapies have historically used a special group of herbs that are now classed as adaptogens. These herbs are believed to help our bodies adapt to stress and regulate our energy levels. Adaptogens primarily work by regulating our adrenal system, which
myweeklypreview.com.au
25.indd 1
oversees much of our hormonal stress responses. Part of their magic involves an adaptive ability, which can be used to upregulate or downregulate our stress hormones as needed. This works much like a dial – when our body needs a bit more energy, adaptogens can boost up the chemicals needed for focus and stamina. When our body is stressed, adaptogens will also dial down the stimulatory chemicals. Essentially, adaptogens can help us to feel calm yet energised. There are many adaptogenic herbs that have been used with great success throughout the history of herbal-based medicine. We highly recommend seeking a professional opinion from a trusted health care provider to find the best ones to suit you. Find out more at foodmatters.com.au.
Feeling Drained, Crazy Mood Swings and Can’t Lose Weight Regardless of Exercise? Could it be your Hormones? Are your mood swings so strong, you’re completely not yourself? Anxiety over nothing, irritable over everything, and crying over anything? I’m not just talking about menopause and PMS, for the men also, MANopause can and will happen. Are you irritable, nervous, depressed, low libido, foggy thinking, can’t sleep, or gaining weight? Hormonal imbalances don’t just happen without a cause. Why can some people eat anything and maintain their weight, yet you gain 3kg overnight from just thinking about breaking your diet? It’s not all about weight, but some of it is, these symptoms are just the tip of the iceberg for what hormones can do to your body when out of balance long term, accelerated aging, permanent metabolism malfunction. They can lead to diabetes and heart disease, decline in brain function, including loss of short term memory, and loss of important older memories permanently.
‘Hormonal imbalances don’t just happen without a cause’ There are 7 triggers that affect hormones including diet, food reactions, toxicity, deficiencies, infections, stress, and fitness. Generally people only deal with one of these at a time. You could see a specialist in only one area, though if you don’t address all of them, you’re caught in a cycle that goes on for life. The frustrating part is once these triggers upset your hormones, your hormones cause these triggers again. How do you stop it? Actually, it’s quite easy to stop, as long as you deal with them all at the same time and completely. I have seen patients treated with hormone creams to balance hormones, the pill, HRT, and bio-identical hormones. These might help your current symptoms, though they won’t fix the cause, and they won’t fix the permanent effects, so the cycle continues and you become reliant on them. Fortunately, it can be treated properly, with most symptoms improved within weeks, and completely relieved within just a few months. Hormones are one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating mood issues. These steps have been proven with testing to improve brain and total body function, without medication. If you’d like to know more, call for a free half hour consultation with one of our naturopaths, where you’ll learn about everything that causes hormonal and mood problems, and what to do about it. You have a choice. Change the path of your life forever. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or visit www.advancedwellness.com.au

MY OPINION
HIGHWAY TO THE DANGER ZONE
GREY MATTERS
Top Gun made Sami Muirhead a woman and she can’t believe it was 30 years ago that Maverick first felt the need for speed.
Rebecca Grisman says if you need career advice, life advice or just an ear to bend, seek out an elder who has been around the block.

an you believe it’s the 30th anniversary of the movie Top Gun? How could that be? Sure, I have done a bit in those three decades including travelling the world, buying and selling a few houses, getting married twice and swapping jobs a handful of times before having kids. But 30 years? It feels about ten years ago. I was barely a teenager when Top Gun came out and I remember thinking it was the coolest movie I had ever seen. It took me three years to save up for a leather bomber jacket so I could look just like the naval pilots in the movie. To this day I associate aviator Ray-Bans with being on trend. And do not get me started on THAT pash between Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis with the soundtrack from Berlin blasting in the background. Indeed, it took my breath away. Up until that movie I pretty much thought all boys (except for my best mate’s big brother) were just annoying pests. Turns out I was very wrong. The volleyball scene with Iceman, Goose, Slider and Maverick was further proof to me that these silly boys may actually be worth a second or third look. Top Gun seduced me into a whole lot of heartbreak. The world loved Top Gun. We loved the story of the underdog, the friendships and the larrikin ways. We loved the fast jets and witty one liners. “I feel the need,
the need for speed”, and “Son, your ego is writing cheques your body can’t cash” are just two legendary lines still used to this day. We loved Tom Cruise’s searing blue eyes and blindingly white cheeky smile. Well, here are some facts that may break your heart. Kelly towered over Tom so in most of the scenes she is barefoot and he is wearing cowboy boots with heels built into them. Takes a bit of the macho out of Maverick for me. If you look closely when you watch it, they are usually cut off at the ankles. They originally had no steamy love scenes in the movie but five months after it was finished they decided to add them after a test audience sent the message loud and clear they did not want to lose that loving feeling. The trouble was, Kelly had lost 27 kilograms and had much darker hair. That is the reason she is wearing a baseball cap in the elevator scene. But it all came together and was the highest grossing film of 1986. So this brings me to an exciting charity night coming up on June 23. We are having a 30th anniversary Top Gun movie screening at Bigscreen Cinemas Caloundra. Darren Percival is going to sing and there will be drinks and plenty of reminiscing. You can find out more information at mixfm.com.au and follow the Give Me Five For Kids links. Raising money for a charity has never been so fun. If only I had kept that bomber jacket.

I
recently got some great business and life management advice from extremely different sources – a grandmother, a doctor and a wildlife activist – but their philosophies were aligned enough to make me pay attention. The common thread of their suggestions was that the best way forward is to seek out an older shoulder to lean on; someone who may not be in the same business but has been around the block and has life experience and learned wisdom to share. Such a person need not be a typical mentor or a professional in a specific field, just a trusted ear with relevant life experience to be able to use their own judgement while listening to me. Many ancient cultures recommend taking your troubles to the village wise man, a circle of elders, or a ‘grey head’ as Celts and Indian tribes called them. It’s the same principle of consulting healers, seers, midwives, and even the Roman Forum’s philosophers for counselling and guidance. Inventor Henry Ford and industrialist Cornelius Vanderbilt gathered their own reference group of experts from various industries to discuss ideas and, no doubt, provide finance. Many business gurus recommend creating such a ‘masterminds’ group or network of peers for input and fresh perspectives.
I’m admittedly lucky because I have at least three such people, none of whom work in my field but can appreciate the effort and care it takes to run a business, raise a family, remain connected and follow a passion – my touchstones are a retired school principal, an accountant and a pioneering woman who, now in her 70s, reads palms. Each of them gives me time and unfiltered advice; none of them allow me to kid myself or whine. They are reliably up for a chat or a problem solving exercise. I love them all but I respect them above all and it’s rare that I hit on a better solution alone than the options that we come up with together. The advice I’ve had recently, to remember how much value there is in asking the generations that have done it all before me, made me think about the many options the Sunshine Coast has to tap into local interest groups, work alongside retired volunteers and network with chambers of commerce or similar associations throughout the region. There is a wealth of people with local knowledge and experience here and they are readily accessible. Ask that grey head you know to be a touchstone for you. The right kind of person will have the time and right attitude to appreciate the importance of their role. One day it may be you.

MALDIVES MAGIC CASTS ROMANTIC SPELL Total privacy and exclusive access to pristine beaches and lagoons is the specialty of The Maldives. By Sam Wylie-Harris
A
s I sink back into a turquoise beanbag almost the same colour as the glistening Indian Ocean ahead of me, I relish the silence and seclusion of my secret island escape. Only days earlier, we’d arrived at Velassaru, an elegant boutique resort that can easily be reached in 25 minutes by speedboat from the Maldivian capital Male. But as it turns out, my husband has even greater treats in store. Armed with snorkelling equipment, beanbags, a glamorous muslin tent and luxury hamper, we head to a private island for a romantic adventure. While we swim in the water, our talented crew creates a cabana with bamboo poles to shade us from the midday sun, and prepares a picnic of champagne, sushi and sashimi. Looking out across crystal-clear waters, we sip bubbly and get to grips with our chopsticks, as small sand crabs gatecrash our private party. It’s just one of many romantic moments during our stay at Velassaru. The resort itself has a laid-back vibe and sleek, modern furnishings with a palette of white and turquoise. There’s a beautiful infinity pool framed by hammocks strung between coconut trees, but we prefer the privacy of our luxury beach villa with uninterrupted views of the lagoon. The beach is only metres away, and every day we snorkel along a house reef teeming with tropical fish. Come nightfall the 8.5-hectare coral island gears up for intimate dining experiences that make you want to fall in love all over again. Out of a choice of five restaurants,
our favourite is Sand, where we dine under a private beach pavilion lit by torches and candlelight. While burying our toes in the sand, we enjoy culinary delights such as king prawns and fillet steak from the stone grill, finishing off with an exquisite chocolate dessert. One night our seats and table have even been sculpted in the sand, with seawater used as glue to seal our sunken thrones. With a menu of Australian beef, local reef fish and Maldivian tuna, along with a good bottle of red from Velassaru’s library of fine wines, we’re almost tempted to start building castles in the sand, in the hope we might stay forever.
BEST FOR INTIMACY: KANDO LHU Pretty and petite with a chic tropical island atmosphere, Kandolhu is a luxurious paradise hideaway that’s 25 minutes by seaplane from Male. Thirty villas make up the resort, dotted around the lush vegetation or overlooking the ocean – all offering an intimate island experience without sacrificing the dining options or activity choices you would expect in some of the larger, flashier resorts. It takes about 10 minutes to stroll around the island, walking barefoot along sandy paths shaded by coconut trees as butterflies flit past, so there’s no chance of losing your way. Kandolhu’s 90-square-metre water villas are a Maldivian dream and feature a king-size bed, a day bed, private sun deck, plunge pool and free-standing bath tub. Step straight down into the balmy sea to snorkel among schools of tropical fish. Although the resort is small, there’s
Luxury bungalows bring you as close to the water as possible still a choice of four restaurants serving a la carte international food, Italian dishes, freshly caught seafood and teppanyaki.
BEST FOR ALL-INCLUSIVE: KURAMATHI Kuramathi, one of the first resorts to open in the Maldives in 1975, has had a revamp and now offers five villa types in addition to its great-value allinclusive packages.
A 20-minute seaplane journey from Male, this large-scale resort has seven bars, three buffet restaurants and nine a la carte restaurants. Along with a wide choice of beach houses and water villas, its new sunset villas are set on the secluded tip of the island, near the long stretch of its famous one-kilometre sandbank. The most romantic is the sunset water villa with a pool that steps down to turquoise waters.

CALOUNDRA PROMOTION
A LOVE FOR FOOD For 13 years, John and Sharon Ktenidis have escaped the cooler climate of New Zealand to holiday on the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Now, they’ve confirmed their love for the region by not only relocating, but investing in the economy. The Ktenidis’ have taken over ownership of Bulcock Beach favourite, Sandbar Cafe and Kiosk. Overlooking the calming waters of Pumicestone Passage, Sandbar has been a staple favourite on Caloundra’s cafe scene. Serving up delicious food and great coffee, it is also a popular stop for afternoon drinks. The new owners say the Sandbar that everyone knows and loves will retain its relaxed vibe. A new menu will be unveiled in coming weeks, including seasonal fare and some classics. Award-winning coffee specialist Tim Adams has joined the business as a coffee partner. The Ktenidis’ bring with them more than 18 years of business experience.
“Most recently we had a business on the beach in Christchurch, New Zealand. We have backgrounds in retail management and enjoy working the business from the floor, have a love of all things food and a Greek heritage as well.” Sandbar Cafe is open every day from 7am and for dinner Thursday to Sunday. The Fish n Chippery opens every day from 11am to 8pm. It is located at 26 The Esplanade, Bulcock Beach.

GET READY TO ROCK Sydney rock outfit Lepers & Crooks are set to send the crowd at Peregian Originals into a frenzy this weekend. The five members, who began their career as a high school band, have quickly taken the nation by storm. Their 2014/2015 tour included more than 200 dates earning them a reputation as one of the hardest working up and coming bands in the country. Made up of vocalist Sam Baker, guitarists Pat Reuter Town and Alex Court, bass player Garreth Clavijo and drummer Damien Jones, their big sound is heavily influenced by classic rock but with a few mixed modern flavours that make Lepers & Crooks’ sound different than the average rock band. Joining the boys on the Peregian Originals bill is the Coast’s own folk performer Chris Flaskas, Brisbane’s Pat Tierney and local ‘50s inspired rock ‘n’ roll band The Hi-Boys. In its 16th year, Peregian Originals is a not-for-profit event crowdfunded through raffles and event barbecues. The free event is on June 12 with music kicking off at 1pm.

FROM STRIPES TO CHEVRON In the same way you consider colour and texture in home decorating, think about the use of patterns. From stripes to chevron and lines, pattern can be a great way to make a room pop. It is important to balance patterns so they don’t clash. That doesn’t mean you can’t mix and match. Choose one bold pattern and build from that, ensuring colours complement each other.

FAMILY RIVALRY AAP’s Peter Atkinson gives the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk a points decision over its European cousin.
T
his is the tale of two long-lost, distant cousins – one from Italy and the other from America. Despite their shared family heritage, they lived very different lives. The Italian cousin was very fashionable, and spent most of his time in the city. The American cousin, by contrast, was the real outdoorsy type –

always anxious to get away from the city lights and head for the bush. Despite their family resemblance, and their shared DNA, these cousins could scarcely have been more different. Yet now they find themselves in the same place, battling head to head for their share of attention. The cousins I’m talking about are
DEAL
two cars from the same family – the Fiat 500X we tested here recently and its corporate cousin, the Jeep Renegade. Both are made by the giant FiatChrysler conglomerate. In fact they’re more than cousins – they’re actually twins beneath the skin – built on the same underpinnings (known by the company as the small-
wide 4x4 architecture) and sharing virtually identical engines and transmissions. Neither could be called pretty. Both are relatively small machines seemingly jacked up on stilts to deliver that sought-after SUV driving position. But the Jeep’s boxy, some might say ugly design looks more at home in this format than the sleeker, more feminine lines of the 500X. Inside, the resemblances are striking. Same funky, modern dash layout, same configuration for things like the control screen and even the start button, same surprisingly spacious interior for a smallish machine. But that’s about where the family resemblance ends. You might recall that we weren’t all that enamoured with the Fiat 500X when we drove it recently – put off by its slightly awkward looks, choppy ride and herky-jerky drivetrain. The Renegade is no prettier than its Fiat cousin – in fact it’s a real plain Jane at first glance – but we found the pair to be chalk and cheese when it comes to driving. It’s one of those rare occasions that an American vehicle outshines a continued over>

<from previous page European equivalent. Well, almost. As it happens the Jeep, like the Fiat, is built in a factory in Melfi, Italy. Which makes the contrast between the two vehicles even more surprising. Just as when we drove the 500X, our Jeep test machine came from the very top of the model range, in this case known as the Renegade Trailhawk. It’s the most powerful, most capable and best-equipped of the four-member Renegade lineup, which features a choice of three petrol engines and three transmissions across the range. The Trailhawk marries a very capable 2.4-litre, 129kW four-cylinder petrol engine with a market-leading ninespeed automatic transmission – a combination that delivers smooth and responsive performance via a multimode all-wheel-drive system. That goes part of the way to justifying its substantial $41,500 (plus onroads) price. The Renegade boasts a total of four trim levels (Sport, Longitude, Limited and flagship Trailhawk) and buyers get the option of two or four-wheel-drive in all but the top model. Higher spec models feature an advanced fulltime AWD system, known as Jeep Active Drive Low providing five
different modes (auto, snow, mud, sand and rock) which Jeep claims is class leading. Despite the tough-guy bash plates front and rear and plastic trim around the wheel arches, the Renegade doesn’t look big enough to be a true off-roader. Yet Jeep claims that, despite its compact size, the Renegade possesses formidable off-road capabilities including steep ramp and departure angles, hill-descent control and wading capability up to 480mm. Around town, it’s surprisingly capable. The ride is reassuring – although it does display a hint of the front-to-back pitching that put us off the Fiat – but the Jeep is noticeably more comfortable then its corporate cousin. The Renegade has a quirky – but
generally impractical – removable roof, called MySky, that can be partly opened or completely removed in two sections. That’s probably good for those idyllic weekends spent cruising down a beach somewhere – but a bit fiddly to get on and off if you’re driving in everyday city traffic. And it tends to rattle a bit on bumpy roads, which wears thin after a while. Like the Fiat, it boasts a high level of equipment, including a seven-inch colour control screen; customisable instrument cluster and a claimed 60 advanced safety and security features – including forward collision warning, active lane-departure system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection and seven airbags. That’s an impressive amount of kit in a car costing $40-grand. Yet on that score, at least, the Fiat shades its trans-Atlantic sibling – with a smaller pricetag and a longer equipment list. Still, there aren’t many areas where the Yanks can match the Italians – be it food, cars, music or fashion. So perhaps it’s only fitting that the Renegade takes the points this time.
JEEP RENEGADE TRAILHAWK HOW BIG? It’s a compact four-wheel-drive, sitting close to the bottom of the Jeep off-roader family. Yet it’s surprisingly spacious inside, boasts decent cargo space and impressive off-road capability. HOW FAST? The 2.4-litre “Tigershark” engine is also found in bigger models like the Jeep Cherokee – so it’s more than powerful enough to give the smaller Renegade ample power. It’s matched to a state-of-the-art nine-speed automatic transmission. HOW THIRSTY? The Trailhawk boasts the largest engine in the Renegade range and the biggest thirst – 7.5L/100km on average. Opt for one of the smaller turbo-charged engine variants and that figure comes down considerably. HOW MUCH? The Trailhawk starts at $41,500.

nvestors are being urged to get ahead of the pack and lodge interest in a new $40 million development to be centrally located in Maroochydore. Maroochy Urban Renewal’s ninestorey The Rhythm on Beach apartment block will sit in the newly defined CBD precinct and feature 80 units plus two pools and a gym. Project marketer Ingrid Ludbrook of Next Property Group says Maroochydore is one of the fastest growing suburbs in the region. “With the Sunshine Coast as Queensland’s fastest growing region, The Rhythm is a sure-fire investment in an area that has grown from 65,000 to over 335,800 in just the past 40 years alone.” “This has put ever increasing pressure on our rental market ensuring rental rates remain high and vacancy is low.” In addition to investors, the development will also appeal to young professional and active retirees, Ludbrook says. “With the Maroochy River and Maroochydore Beach walking distance away, relaxing and staying active will be easy with the brilliant lifestyle opportunity on offer from your new address.
Ingrid Ludbrook - Next Property
“Commuting will also be a breeze with several public transport options at your door and the Gateway Motorway nearby to quickly link you to Brisbane, Noosa, or the stunning hinterland. “Live, work, play. minutes to the beach.” The complex itself will include two and three bedroom apartments with a variety of floorplan options. “The typical floor plate has 10 different two bed, two bath designs,’’ Ludbrook explains. “The architects have designed it in a way that will allow flexibility into the design if a client wants a three bed or four bed apartment.’’ Potential buyers are now being invited to register expressions of interest. LET THERE BE LIGHT With the two basement levels and the ground-level retail floor now complete, First Light Mooloolaba is rapidly emerging out of the ground. The 13 level apartment complex is being developed on the last First Avenue parcel of land – something which has contributed to strong sale figures. Reed Property Group CEO Jay Emmerton says more than 97 per cent of the development has sold with only two
apartments of the 67 remaining. “The apartments have appealed to all types of buyers — from owner-occupiers to weekenders from Brisbane and some investors,’’ he says. “The two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments average a generous 88-square metres which in an area that generally offers more compact holiday apartments makes for a refreshing change.
“As the population continues to grow on the Sunshine Coast, and the amount of land available walking distance from the beach continues to decrease, it’s easy to see why these apartments are being snapped up. “We are seeing high demand for rental properties on the Coast and a good return on investment for those looking to purchase.”

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
Bugger! Imagine losing your surfing heat after not getting waves for the last 10 minutes. That was the fate of Julian Wilson at the Fiji Pro this week. Seemed an unfair way to exit given how good he is. Man, last weekend was certainly interesting. That offshore wind was blowing many off the back but if you got down the face some fun was to be had. This weekend is looking like super fun Saturday and Monday with Sunday onshore. Whatever you are up too get into it. Winter is looking good.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream are moving over Maroochy Bar in the waves about an hour apart on the rising tide and working upstream to search out weed beds for an early breeding season. Sand crabs are unusually late but are good size and great eating with the deeper channels working around Goat and Channel Islands near the mouth of the Maroochy River. SURF: Tarwhine and sea bream are taking whitebait and fowl gut along North Shore with chopper tailor nabbing lures at Pincushion right on dawn. Recent rough seas may have developed new gutters, so check these out at low tide, take a land marker and come back on the rising tide. Perfect ‘U’ shaped gutters are preferred, as the fish have an entrance and exit from the gutter. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, you can get mixed reef fish from The Gneerings to Murphy’s with squid and pillies the best baits. Some anglers are working The Hards (NNE beyond the Barwon Banks), and have returned quality snapper and pearl perch. FRESHWATER: The upper reaches of the Noosa River are alive with early winter bass, with spinner baits the go in lures. When fishing our impoundments in the cooler weather try to work your baits and lures during the warmest part of the day.

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) Cats are feeling stir-crazy! You’ll feel extra restless this week, as the planets activate your freedom-loving side. All types of outdoor activities are favoured as you channel energy into physical pursuits, go on an adventure or connect with foreign friends.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) When it comes to a health issue or a domestic matter, don’t bury your head in the sand. No matter how difficult the reality is, it’s far better that you face it. But a close relationship becomes very confusing on the weekend, when neither of you are sure where you stand.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) The week starts with a bang as the planets highlight romance! It’s also a fabulous time to explore fresh horizons with foreign friends. A loved one may hit you with news that shocks you but you’ll find it’s just what’s needed to blast you out of your comfort zone.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) This week’s stars are super for shaking up a dull domestic routine, as you find ways to make daily chores much more satisfying. But money matters look complicated on the weekend, when extra expenses surface or cracks appear in a arrangement with a friend.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Friendships are where all the fun is this week, as you catch up with an old acquaintance or find a fabulous new friend. And, if you have a dilemma that’s worrying you, talk it over with a trusted mate. You’ll find a problem shared is a problem halved!

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) Monday and Tuesday are fortunate for matters involving family, work, health or pets as a welcome surprise boosts your spirits. Love planet Venus visits your relationship zone (from Friday until July 12) which is good news for committed couples and impatient singles.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Let the circus begin! Your bohemian side shines brightly on Monday and Tuesday, when the stars stimulate your endearingly eccentric side. Tap into the adventurous Aquarian you were born to be (and have fun charming others without even trying).
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Hey Pisces … are you feeling overwhelmed by work pressures, personal problems or relationship politics? This week you’re keen to escape stressful scenarios and daydream the hours away, as you retreat into your own private world – invitation only!

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) Are you looking for a new job or applying for a promotion? Present yourself as someone who really stands out. Inner confidence is the key. Friday should be fun (and very social) as Venus vamps into your sign, and you turn the old charisma up a notch.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) With Mercury (your patron planet) moving into Gemini (where it joins the Sun and Venus) your innate curiosity and versatility are firing so keep your mind well stimulated this week. Catching up with an artistic friend will also get your creative juices flowing.

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Is a friend leading you up the primrose path to Taurean trouble? Keep a sensible head on your shoulders this week. If you sit back and let others make decisions, then you’ll just feel powerless. The moon and Mars urge you to be more self-sufficient in relationships.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Rams are feeling mighty curious, as Mercury moves into your travel and learning zone. So it’s a wonderful week to shake off the physical and mental cobwebs and get passionate about an exciting new trip, an online project or a local community connection.

THE LAST WORD
SMALL WONDERS Richard O’Leary says art can become richer when seen through a child’s eyes.
H
ow would you like to view the world through a child’s eyes again? Where just about every interaction is a new experience, and wonder isn’t something you think, but feel. On a recent saturated Saturday I was lucky enough to come close to doing just that when I took my fiveyear-old son to Caloundra Regional Gallery. Neither of us knew what was on – it was pot luck really, on a day cold enough for pots to be bubbling away in kitchens across the region. So we were surprised and amused when the gallery attendant asked us to strap a miner’s torch to our heads before entering a darkened room to experience Flora non Evidens. My little spelunker explored this cave with fascinated glee – “wow”, “look at this”, “look, look”. For those of you who haven’t seen the exhibition, the council’s website
describes it as: “A unique installation of delicate, light reflective embroideries of endangered plant species from Australia’s east coast. When illuminated by the viewer’s head torch, life-size trees, vines and flowers appear as a ghostly garden, before disappearing
“…the experience was made so much more vital when shared with my child” back into the darkness, suggesting the fragile existence of these rare plants and their environments.” Like frost on grass, each piece looked so delicate it could break. As an adult I could appreciate it, but the experience was made so much more vital when shared with my child. He got it – completely. He focused fully on each
embroidered tree, branch and flower and then moved on to the next, just as captivated each time. His enthusiasm was impossible not to catch – I wanted to see the art how he was seeing it. For him, the cold concrete floors and the hint of a false ceiling were blocked out. His world view was contained to the beam of the torch, which followed the movement of his head. It was at about this time I thought of the artist Karen Richards – I felt sorry for her. I wanted her to witness this five-year-old’s response to her work. I wanted her to be able to trade places with me for just a few minutes so she could see the effect her art was having on someone. If you’d like to see it for yourself and take your own children along, Flora non Evidens is open until July 3. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
