It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.
hen I was growing up you did your homework or there was hell to pay. These days, the whole concept of homework is being questioned by educators and parents alike. Some experts are going so far as to say it should be abolished altogether because it causes too much stress, isn’t effective and creates conflict within families. So how do schools, parents and students solve the homework puzzle? That’s the question we try to answer in this week’s cover story. Also this week, we have a quick chat with our newest councillor John Connolly, whose favourite place on the Coast is, not surprisingly, anywhere in Division 4. We meet Maleny actor Colin Dixon, a scary looking bloke with a heart of gold and big plans to make a feature film in the hinterland, and take a trip to Airlie Beach – without taking a single backpack. We also have some great health and beauty tips, entertainment, business advice and lots of property on offer. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT
MAN WITH A PLAN
Our newest councillor John Connolly says we need to accept the Coast is growing and plan for an extra 200,000 people to join us. WHERE ON THE COAST DO YOU LIVE?
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
I lived at Mooloolaba for 15 years, and I have lived the past five years in Minyama.
An acceptance that the world is changing, that there are going to be an extra two million people in South East Queensland in the next 25 years. We’re going to have an extra 200,000 residents on the Sunshine Coast, and we need people to accept that and plot our best way forward.
FIRST JOB? After leaving school, my first job was in the ANZ Bank. I have also worked in a number of hotels for a few years.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
YOUR GREATEST REGRET?
For the past two months now, I have been the councillor for Division 4 of Sunshine Coast Council. It’s an exciting time to be involved. The Coast is growing, we have 3000 boys and girls leaving school each year, and managing growth is very important.
None. You can’t spend your life looking in the rear vision mirror.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? Getting to 60 years of age (mostly unscathed).
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My wife Jo and sons John, 33, James, 32 and Jessie, 12.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN?
FIRST CAR?
When surrounded by family and friends.
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?
Austin 850 (without a back window, which Jerry O’Reilly from Savills pushed out and still hasn’t paid me for yet).
FAVOURITE BOOK?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?
Any of the Mister Men collection.
My parents lived in Nambour in the late ‘60s where I played A grade cricket and rugby league for the Sunshine Coast. They moved away, but I returned in 1995.
FAVOURITE SONG? Don’t Back Down by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; and anything by the Eagles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, and Justin Bieber.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? “I don’t know, you’re the @#%& coach” – it made me realise that if you are running the show, you need to show leadership and make the right decisions for everyone.
Display Homes Open n Saturday & Sunday 12.45pm -1.30pm or by appointment
People who have the talent and ability to do things, but just don’t make the effort. People who lack vision and imagination.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? Watch a good movie.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
TEA OR COFFEE?
It’s just a good place to live; the climate, the people, and the pace of life.
Forty-three beans and one sugar.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?
NRL, AFL and rugby. In rugby, it’s obvious the Reds; NFL is Brisbane Broncos and Melbourne Storm, and in AFL, West Coast Eagles and Collingwood.

COVER STORY
HOMEWORK HEADACHE
Why do we battle with our kids over homework when studies show it’s more trouble than it’s worth? WORDS: Richard O’Leary
“I
f homework were a prescription drug, the Federal Drug Administration would have long ago demanded its recall.” That’s how US academic John Buell described homework in 2000 – and many Australian education experts agree with the sentiment. Sixteen years on and most of the evidence suggests our addiction to homework has only increased despite the debate over its effectiveness. The latest Australia Bureau of Statistics figures show Australian children in Years 4–12 average about seven hours of homework a week – that’s up from 5.3 hours in 2008. A 2014 study of 15-year-olds by the Programme for International Student Assessment found Australia was one of only two countries to have more homework now than it did in 2003. The increase in homework didn’t see a rise in our education rankings – over that time we lost ground in mathematics, reading and science. University of the Sunshine Coast Education lecturer Carol Smith says the debate over homework has been going for decades – but there’s still more confusion than clarity. “Some parents have a belief that the

more homework their children get, the better the school. That’s just really incorrect, that’s inaccurate, it’s no measure of learning. The extent of the homework cannot be aligned to the quality of the learning.” She says the research shows there has to be a clear academic purpose for homework and that to be efficient it has to be at the right level of difficulty and interest for the students. In other words, it
consultation with the school community, as specified in the P–12 curriculum, assessment and reporting framework,” says a Queensland Education Department spokesperson. The Department’s guidelines can be summarised as no homework for students in Prep, an hour a week for children in Years 1–3, two to three hours a week for Years 4–5 students, three to four hours for students in Years 6–7, up

has to be meaningful. The Queensland Education Department, probably wisely considering how contentious the issue can be, has handed over most of the responsibility for homework to individual schools. “Each state school in Queensland develops their homework policy in
to five hours a week for students in Years 8–9, while in years 10, 11 and 12 there are no suggested limits on how much homework should be done. Smith questions that approach to setting homework. “I’m also aware there are some people who say it should be ten minutes for every
year level, there are all those sorts of little myths that are around. . . I think that misses the point of what it’s all about. “I honestly think when you see little tiny kids, I’m talking Prep and Year 1s with inordinate amounts of extra work to do at home, that’s just bloody ridiculous.” But Smith is not just worried about our youngest students, she is increasingly concerned about the homework burden on adolescents. “If you think about it, they’ve got six subjects in senior secondary, if everybody is giving them an hour’s homework and they’re meant to do study on top of that?” The effect of all this homework on students is still up for discussion in Australia, but in the United States there’s a growing body of evidence which suggests it’s harmful rather than helpful. A Stanford University study of more than 4000 adolescents from highperforming high schools in California found students who did more homework than the average of their peers experienced more academic stress, lack of balance in their lives, and an increase in physical health problems. Fifty-six per cent of students considered homework a primary source of stress. Another study at the Saint Louis University School of Medicine surveyed myweeklypreview.com.au

nearly 1400 students at a high school in Fremont, California to measure any links between stressing about school and depression. Eighty per cent of students showed signs of anxiety while 54 per cent of students had moderate to severe symptoms of depression. At that school, homework limits and weekend and holiday homework bans have been introduced to try and reduce stress, and increase the love of learning. Sunshine Coast child psychologist Kerri Chamberlain says it’s important to get the balance right between homework and home life. “I think that is going to be different for each child and each family. It is important to watch how your child is coping and make adjustments accordingly. “About halfway through Year 1, I approached my son’s teacher to let her know that I would not be engaging in the homework battle any longer. The 40-minute battle was not worth the 10 minutes of homework he had to do. And to be honest, I felt like it was damaging our relationship. “I actually didn’t tell my son that he no longer had to do homework, I just stopped forcing the issue. We did, however, continue with reading and sight words, which he always enjoyed anyway. Interestingly, once he started Year 2 he decided he wanted to do his homework and has managed it himself ever since.” “Some say that starting homework young prepares our children for the pressures in high school and beyond by creating good study habits, planning and organisation skills, however I am sure those skills can be fostered in other age-appropriate ways. Also I would like to see five- and six-year-olds focusing on building other skills required to grow into a well-rounded adult, such as creativity, social and emotional skills – they can get organised later. “I would love to see free play to be the solution for children. This sort of play is vital for brain development and developing skills such as, problem-
solving, decision-making, sharing, collaboration, conflict resolution, independence and social-emotional learnings. Also free play reduces stress and pressure and can actually increase attention on academic skills. “However, if homework is here to stay, then I would like to see the type of homework move away from rote worksheets and allow for flexibility with this time. For example, allowing children choice to research topics of interest, generate creative projects and the like. Supporters of homework agree it needs to be more about quality than quantity. Principal of Sunshine Coast Grammar School Maria Woods says no
regularly, spend time each week putting into practice the skills, knowledge and concepts they are learning every day. Parents are encouraged to create a weekly planner with their student so that everyone can be part of the support process. “Throughout the course of a school term, the ebb and flow of what is happening in the school calendar will dictate how much homework or study is required. “Like any good debate, there are always legitimate arguments for both cases when it comes to the topic of homework. The bottom line is that setting good work habits and encouraging students to build solid organisational

student should be undertaking ‘busy’ work at home. “There can’t be a blanket approach to what every child should be doing. It varies from year level to year level and the individual student needs. Many teachers negotiate with students about the expectations each night, or each week. For parents, it becomes more challenging as their children move through the school and the work becomes more complex and sophisticated and parents are unable to assist. It is important that in all aspects of school life, parents and teachers are in sync so that the student can be supported and feel they are in control of how they are going. The right balance involves the student, the family and the school. “Our students are expected to read
skills, time management and planning their workloads are all relevant tools for a successful life.” Alfie Kohn who was described by Time magazine as “perhaps the country’s (America’s) most outspoken critic of education’s fixation on grades [and] test scores” says there is no link between more homework and better organised children. In his book The Homework Myth he calls for homework to be abolished altogether. He says there is no connection between homework and academic success. A view echoed by Chiray Fitton, the principal of the Montessori International College on the Sunshine Coast. She says the notion of homework in the traditional sense has always puzzled her, and that it seems to be more about meeting the
needs of the adult than the child. “Most children spend up to seven hours a day engaged in school work. Isn’t this enough time? It seems absurd that children are then expected to continue school at home. Why not just keep them at school? In general, the volume of work children are expected to complete at home is pointless. More is not better. You have to stop and ask what is this about? It sure isn’t about the child. “In the traditional sense, I see very little benefit. The pendulum has swung too far. Don’t get me wrong – things begun or done at school should be recalled; revisited and repeated, but the way this is done is what is important.” Montessori Prep and Primary students don’t get assigned traditional homework, but Fitton says they still have plenty to do. “We are looking not for worksheets and assignments but for learning as a way of life, both at home and at school. And, of the two, the home will ultimately have a far greater influence on the child’s future way of life than will the school. “Montessori children have more work to do at home than anyone, but it’s meaningful work – it has a purpose. ‘Homework’ for Montessori children is not optional. It can be anything from learning an instrument or starting a family newsletter, to planning and cooking the family meal, writing a poem or a play, or growing a vegetable garden.” If the traditional way of handing out homework is a problem, what is the solution? Carol Smith says the answer is for the adults to get smarter. “The solution is to go back to parents and teachers and everyone involved in the education of these children to think about the purpose of these assigned tasks, if it’s not learner focused, if it’s not child focused, if it’s not about developing this sense of independence and joy in learning and discovery then I think we have a problem.” Disclosure – The author went to a public school. His children attend a Montessori school.

WALK WITH A VIEW TO HELP THE SMITH FAMILY Around 100 people will hit the pavement between Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba on July 8 for the annual charity event, Walk with a View. The event aims to raise the profile of VIEW clubs, which is a women’s organisation that supports The Smith Family. Money raised is donated to The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which assists in the education of more than 1000 disadvantaged students. The walk was the initiative of the Maroochydore VIEW Club and this year clubs right around the country will take part in the event. To participate, register at the Alexandra Headland Surf Club at 8.30am. Cost is $5.
COAST PARALYMPIAN OFF TO RIO Sunshine Coast swimmer Liam Schluter will head to Rio in September to compete in the 2016 Paralympic Games thanks to the help of a $350 Sunshine Coast Council Individual Development Grant. Councillor Jenny McKay says the grant helped to fund Schluter’s participation in the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships. “His outstanding results at these championships secured him a place in Australia’s Paralympic team for Rio. I’m sure the whole Sunshine Coast community will be cheering Liam on when he competes at the Paralympics later this year.”

Thousands of people are gearing up for the region’s largest aviation exhibition. The annual Queensland Air Museum Open Cockpit Weekend will be held on July 2 to 3 in Caloundra. Visitors will have the chance to sit in the cockpit of an F-111, Wessex, DC3 and various other aircraft on display. There will also be a display of vintage aircraft, classic cars, Star Wars characters, a jumping castle and food for sale. Gates open at 9am and proceeds will support the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
The Queensland Government will build a new police station to cater for growth in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The Maleny station, which was constructed 64 years ago, will be replaced with a new building, to be completed by Christmas. Police Minister Bill Byrne says the new station will feature enhanced facilities. “The station will move to Macadamia Drive and will be a state-of-the-art facility with interview rooms, a holding cell, work stations, a reception area, exhibit stores, car parking, acoustic fencing and – importantly for a rural community – a driver’s licence issuing facility.”
GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING. . . Drivers from five countries, including Japan and India, headline a top-flight entry list for the annual International Rally of Queensland to be held on the Coast this weekend. Queensland’s only international motorsport event has attracted more than 40 entries who will tackle 240 kilometres of challenging forest stages around Imbil. Spectator viewing points will be available at Derrier Road and Casey’s Gully Road with tickets available at the gate. Meanwhile, the rally’s official ceremonial start will be held at Rotary Park in Maroochydore at 5pm today, June 17. It features a rally car display, children’s rides and food stalls.

KAWANA TO GET 10-SCREEN CINEMA IN UPGRADE Sunshine Coast Council has approved a major extension to Kawana Shoppingworld, which will add a cinema with up to 10 screens, more specialty stores and around 750 additional car parking spaces to the complex. The development will occur in two stages beginning with the car park. The first stage will include a multi-screen cinema complex, to be located off Point Cartwright Drive at the northern end of the site, additional restaurants and more specialty stores. The second stage proposes a 6800-metressquared increase to the gross floor area of the shopping complex and includes an additional major tenant and further specialty retail.
OCEAN REGATTA SCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER One of Australia’s most historic and renowned ocean races – the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta – was officially launched in Mooloolaba on Tuesday. A fixture of the sailing calendar from the 1970s through to the 1990s, the Regatta was revived in 2014. More than 40 sailing vessels are expected to take part in the Regatta this year, which will be held from October 13 to 15. Contenders will compete for the highly coveted Frank Hurd Memorial Trophy, awarded by their peers for performance and character, and named in honour of the past competitor. 18 My Weekly Preview | June 17, 2016

WE’RE FLYING HIGH
Sunshine Coast Airport has set a new 12-month passenger record with 959,282 people flying in and out of the airport in the 12 months ending May 31, beating the old record set in January 2009. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the airport has recorded 12 consecutive months of year-on-year growth. “For May alone, we saw a 14 per cent jump on the same month in 2015 with 68,908 passengers using our airport’s services and taking advantage of the extra options that are now available to them.”
$253M FOR GAME-CHANGING PROJECTS Mayor Mark Jamieson has handed down a $717 million Sunshine Coast Council budget for 2016/2017, which includes a $253 million capital works program. The council will invest $53 million in the new Maroochydore CBD, $31 million in the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm and $25 million to start design and planning for the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion. General rates for the majority of ratepayers will increase by $28 to $1138 per annum and the cost of collection of a 240-litre wheelie bin will increase by $4.60 to $276 per annum. The Environment Levy will go up $10 to $70 and the Transport Levy by $7 to $27.
$2.4 MILLION The new Coolum Sports Complex has been welcomed by the community. Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer says the upgrade increases sporting opportunities for the community. “Council has worked with the State Government on this $2.4 million expansion as part of the council’s Coolum Sports Complex Masterplan.’’ The facility, which was unveiled last week, includes a synthetic turf cricket pitch with a junior boundary, a training area, 78 car parks with LED lighting, pathways, field lighting and shade trees.

Local Bed Retailer Will Give Away Over One Million Dollars In Discounts On His Entire Inventory Between 17th June to 20th June Because He Has A Tax Problem And Wants You To Be The Beneficiary Instead Of The Australian Tax Office My business has had a great year so far in 2016. In fact, we’ve done so well I’m probably going to pay double the tax I did last year. And the way it works in the retail trade is the more stock you have on hand, the more tax you pay. Herein lies my problem You see, without considering the tax consequences I just bought in a whole lot of stock and I must get rid of it to avoid being hit with a huge bill from the ATO. So my accountant’s told me to hold a massive clearance sale to get rid of my stock before the end of financial year. At up to 67% off all stock, I know I’m practically throwing away quality merchandise. I don’t care. I have to get rid of them.

PROFILE
ALL REVVED UP
Film stars and camera crews will roll into Maleny when Colin Dixon’s movie Patched begins filming in December. Words Leigh Robshaw
M
aleny actor Colin ‘Spida’ Dixon gets all the fun jobs — serial killer, biker, standover man, prisoner. He’s a big bloke covered in tattoos with a fondness for spiders (he has 19 spider tattoos) and a persona that gives him the kind of screen presence most actors would kill for. But behind the tough exterior he’s a respectful, easygoing guy who loves a good laugh and worries about neglecting his wife and daughter while he devotes himself to getting his first feature film made and raising the $112,000 budget. Dixon fell into acting when he was asked to be an extra on a film set in Ipswich two years ago, and the director spotted his talent. One day’s work as an extra became three weeks of filming, and he’s since been seen in the film Charlie’s Farm, the TV show Wanted, where he worked with Rebecca Gibney, and Vodafone and Telstra commercials. Last year, Dixon wrote, directed and produced the short film Patched, which was set in and around Maleny. The local IGA helped out with food for the cast and crew, the local dentist offered his surgery for the scene of a crime, and the local police got in on the act by advising the actors playing police officers. The story, which came to Dixon 20 years ago, centres around an outlaw motorcycle club mistakenly blamed for a bank robbery, which Dixon describes as Sons of Anarchy meets Underbelly. The introduction of the VLAD laws made it all the more believable and it caught the attention of Gold Coast production company Nation Films, which has now come on board to co-produce it as a feature film. Dixon is keen to showcase the Sunshine Coast as a world-class filmmaking destination, with filming to begin in Maleny in December. Locals
Colin ‘Spida’ Dixon is bringing some big names to the Coast to star in his film
might catch a glimpse of some famous faces who’ve signed on for the film, including Angry Anderson, Andy McPhee (Sons of Anarchy), Jason Simmons (Sharknado, Baywatch), Steve Nation (Neighbours) and world champion boxer and kickboxer John Wayne Parr. “I believe Patched has the potential to be a really great Australian gritty drama,” says Dixon. “I’ve had phenomenal interest – it’s brilliant. People are offering me their houses and their properties for the film, a lot of wives are putting their husbands forward as bikies, mums are telling me how their children would love to be actors. “We will try to the best of our ability to use as many as we can. We have one scene where we’re hoping to have 80 to 120 bikers in one scene. We have a funeral, a pub scene, a cafe scene. We
have a lot of support around Maleny and in Witta we have a farmer who has given us his farm and house to use as a clubhouse. We even have a car dealer in Caloundra that’s offered to give us a couple of cars to blow up.” While the rolling green hills of Maleny might seem more suited to the dulcet tones of a bonnet drama than the sound of automatic gunfire, shattering windows and car explosions, Dixon reckons it’s the perfect setting in which to explore the controversial VLAD laws and the way society views motorcycle clubs. “It’s a very realistic story in the way it explores the VLAD laws and the issues that causes for not only the outlaw motorcycle clubs, but their families. It also explores the way the brotherhood of the motorcycle clubs is starting to fragment
because the doors have been opened to allow anybody to join up nowadays.” While Dixon rides a bike and looks the part, he has never been a member of an outlaw motorcycle club, though he has always been intrigued by them. He traces his interest back to his childhood when at the age of 12, a group of bikers set up their clubhouse over the back fence of his home in Inverell. “They were fascinating,” he says. “I liked their tattoos, I wasn’t scared of them. I leaned over the fence and said g’day and they talked to me. I’ve never seen them in a negative light, I wasn’t introduced to them in a negative light so I’ve never seen them in a negative way. I don’t think they’re all trouble. “There’s a brotherhood there and a friendship that’s there. I think deep down we all want to have a sense of belonging to some family and sometimes your own family is not enough.”

TRAVEL
from October to May. If you choose to swim in the ocean during these months, Tourism Whitsundays recommends wearing a full Lycra stinger suit. Alternatively, stick to the stinger-free Airlie Beach Lagoon. In close proximity to the main street and in the centre of town, the lagoon is surrounded by parkland and overlooks the ocean. There are plenty of shady parks with barbecues and change room facilities.
AIRLIE FOR THE FAMILY
While backpackers claimed Airlie Beach long ago, it’s also a great destination for families with young children. By Candice Holznagel
T
raditionally, Airlie Beach has been the place to escape to with friends for a fun-filled weekend of bar-hopping, lounging by the pool and browsing the strip of fashionable boutiques. The beachside town attracts thousands of backpackers each year who are in search of, and are guaranteed to find, relaxed, easygoing days and evenings filled with live music and dancing. What I have discovered more recently is that Airlie Beach is also the perfect
getaway for the family. It seems I’m not alone – tourism operators are now targeting young families as a profitable market. With long summers and warm days, Airlie Beach is the perfect holiday destination any time of year. Here are my top four things to do:
EXPLORE THE OUTER ISLANDS Visit Australia’s number one beach, as rated by Tripadvisor. Cruise Whitsundays offers full-day excursions from the port of Airlie to the stunning Whitehaven Beach, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch. The boat will then cruise to Hamilton Island, where you will have a couple of hours to explore the boutiques and enjoy the resort pools. The Island Hopper pass is another great way to explore the outer islands. The pass allows passengers to explore Daydream and Hamilton Islands. Visit cruisewhitsundays.com.
SWIM
RIDE A CAMEL
A visit to Airlie Beach isn’t complete without a relaxing dip. When visiting North Queensland, swimmers must be mindful of stinger season, which spans
Head to the Airlie Beach Markets, which are located along the foreshore. There is a great variety of handcrafted baby goods, homemade jams, chutneys and cakes,
plus everything in between. Children won’t want to pass up the opportunity to ride a camel along the beach. The markets are on every Saturday from 8am.
EAT From paleo cafes to rustic Italian restaurants and pub fare, Airlie Beach has it all. With pretty ocean views, La Tabella serves up fresh, modern Italian brunch or dinner. Visit latabella.com.au. Families will also enjoy Cactus Jack’s Bar and Grill. Serving a large range of Tex-Mex food, it has a good kids’ menu. Visit cactusjacks.com.au.
GETTING THERE Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia fly from Brisbane to the Whitsunday Coast Airport in Proserpine. Passengers can transfer to Airlie Beach via Whitsunday Transit.
STAYING THERE Airlie Beach has dozens of resort-style accommodation options. For luxurious accommodation try Mantra Boathouse Apartments (mantra.com.au) or for something a little less expensive, check out Whitsunday Vista Resort (whitsundayvista.com.au). Tip: Most accommodation is within walking distance to town, but for closer proximity choose a hotel that is located on the hill behind the main street.

CAN’T MAKE IT ON ELECTION DAY?
If you know you can’t vote on Saturday 2 July, you can vote early. It’s amazing how powerful a piece of paper can be on election day. If you are an Australian citizen aged 18 years or over, you are required by law to vote. So, if you’re unable to make it to a polling place on election day, you can vote early at an early voting centre or apply for a postal vote. You can vote early if you are at work on Saturday 2 July, or will be outside the electorate where you are enrolled. There are other reasons you can vote early – visit www.aec.gov.au/early to find out more.
Your vote will help shape Australia.

SO THAT’S WHY KATE’S RAKE THIN US actor Kate Bosworth is a fan of the double breakfast. Frankly, who wouldn’t be? It’s a new Hollywood weight-loss trend, based on the idea that your metabolism speeds up if you scoff something small when you wake up, then have a larger breakfast mid-morning (elevensies anyone?). Kate told Allure magazine she eats a couple of hard-boiled eggs, half an avo and a cup of tea first thing. After her morning workout she eats more protein-rich eggs, more avos, fruit and veggies. No wonder she’s so slim. . .

our personal boundaries, values and beliefs, act as guidelines for life’s choices. Maintaining your boundaries allows your sense of moral standards to be congruent with who you are. When you allow these to be crossed, you may be left feeling disappointed or it may even lead you into long-term situations that have disastrous effects on your quality of life, health, and happiness. Understanding that each person has a different set of values means you can’t expect another person to maintain your boundaries for you. You need to make your choices, and have the strength to say no when necessary to maintain what is right for you, or you may be left feeling a sense of angst and unhappiness. For some, the need to be polite, avoid conflict, or care for another takes precedence over their own values.

They often find themselves feeling compromised in order to make someone else happy or comfortable. Being aware of a people-pleasing nature, and learning where the line is for yourself, understanding that there is a balance between being supportive while still maintaining your boundaries, is not selfish. It’s necessary for you to live a life you are proud of. Having the strength to firmly enforce your boundaries to others is a skill you can learn with practice. Having the strength to enforce your own boundaries within yourself may take some time, though the end result will mean a happier, more fulfilled and satisfying life, one that you deserve. MY OPINION
IS IT A CRIME TO BE POOR?
HOLIDAY AT HOME
Overdue fees on bills punish the poor and make it even harder for them to get ahead, writes Richard Bruinsma.
Sami Muirhead reckons the Sunny Coast has all the ingredients for a top staycation – you can even nip home to feed the fish.
F
or years I thought my buddy was bonkers because he lived at Buderim and would take the family camping at Cotton Tree. Look, I have never boasted about being the brightest crayon in the pack, but I had a lightbulb moment this week. My camping buddy was right. It is so much easier holidaying with your home on your doorstep. You can zap home for more grog if you need it at midnight when all the shops are closed. You can whip home to feed the pet fish and take off again in time for happy hour at sunset at your vacation destination. You can pack half an hour before you need to hit the road. I had a little staycation this week with my daughter and my girlfriend and her daughter. We labelled ourselves the Awesome Foursome as we filled my car boot with 17 bags and three hair straighteners and drove 20 minutes to Noosa. The Taylor Swift soundtrack had barely finished when we arrived. No airport parking. No highway hold-ups. Just the blue winding coastline and Shake It Off on high volume. It was bliss. We did not camp. I have an intense fear of goannas as well as going to the toilet in a hole in the ground. The thought of combining the two makes me break out in hives. So we stayed at a gorgeous little family owned place called Ivory Palms Resort.
Our daughters swam in the pool and jumped on a trampoline you could see from space and ran around with a pack of instant new friends. I love how kids make friends instantaneously. My friend and I drank wine. And sat on our backsides. The next day with our dusty heads and our teeth still stained red from the shiraz, we played tourist on Hastings Street. It was a total of 24 hours away that rejuvenated our souls and filled up our friendship memory buckets. The countdown is on until the school holidays. We are going to check out the botanic garden at Cooroy and have a picnic. We are going to go rock climbing at Point Cartwright. We are going to check out that amazing cuckoo clock shop in the hinterland. And go to the Kenilworth Hotel for the best hamburgers ever. Then we are going strawberry picking at Tanawha and hopefully having fish and chips at Dicky Beach. We can do it all so easily thanks to where we live. The Sunshine Coast tourism region attracts close to 8.2 million visitors annually, with 92 per cent of the overnight market domestic visitors. So let’s support local these holidays and be an army of day-tripping tourists. Maybe you will lash out and spend a night away.

A
recent New York Times article asked the question, “Is it a crime to be poor?” It’s an indictment on the world today – including the Sunshine Coast and Australia – that the answer seems to be yes. It’s not a silly conclusion to draw when most government and quasigovernment organisations charge significant interest on those late paying their bills. The Sunshine Coast Council, for example, charges 11 per cent interest on overdue rates. As for reasons why people don’t pay those bills on time, apart from being unable to, there are those who are too lazy or have forgotten to pay, or those who refuse to pay, but that is a different matter. Those unable to pay – the poor – have their burden increased by the additional interest on their bill. They are, in effect, being punished for being poor. Then there’s the State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER), which is responsible for collecting financial penalties issued by the courts, unpaid infringement notices, and other mostly government ordered payments. I remember, as a court reporter, sitting in the public gallery of the Maroochydore Courts, listening to the
magistrate issue fine upon fine to those who, judging by appearances, would struggle to pay. In the same breath, the magistrate would immediately refer that fine to SPER. For the petty defendants, many of whom are already struggling, an extra few hundred dollars makes no difference. After all, if you have zero money, a debt could just as easily be $500 or $1 million. The New York Times article spoke of former criminals who had turned their lives around, but were struggling with past debts significantly inflated due to subsequent penalties for non-payment. As the article states ironically: “The one way to ensure that citizens cannot repay debts is to lock them up.” Here in Australia, the one way to ensure citizens cannot quickly pay their overdue bills is to increase them. If it could be proved with facts and figures that the poor are punished for non-payment, could there be a case to answer with the antidiscrimination tribunal? It would be nice, too, if the new government come July 2 would look seriously at policies to address costs of living and promoting job creation. To keep ignoring that is also a crime.
Richard Bruinsma is a journalist who has also worked as a media advisor to two federal politicians on the Sunshine Coast.

BANKERS ON TENTERHOOKS Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.
M
ost central bankers must feel a little like the early explorers, with each day promising another reach into uncharted territory. Reasonable economic conditions had looked like they would protect Australia from near-negative rates, but the disappearance of inflation has blown us onto a track that is projected to land at a one per interest rate. We expect lower rates will be used as a means of pushing inflation back up into the Reserve Bank’s (RBA) target range of two to three per cent. In our view, these monetary settings provide considerable downside protection for the equity market. We have already been keen on the yield basket of stocks as well as companies
that generate a high proportion of their profits offshore, and the latest developments give us more conviction on this view. The latest CPI data was described by our economists as shockingly low, and even worse when delving into the detail. We now expect the RBA to cut rates to one per cent by mid-2017, which is likely to give further impetus to the yield stocks that we favour. In terms of the currency, the divergent paths of the US Federal Reserve (we expect two US rate rises) and the RBA will exert sharp downward pressure on the Australian dollar, which we forecast to slide to US$0.65 by June 2017. This will be a nice boost for exportexposed industries, as well as the large number of companies deriving substantial overseas earnings. Looking at banks, falling interest rates are normally a negative for bank interest margins (the difference between what borrowers pay, and what depositors get). However, we believe banks will use this opportunity to
A further decline in 10-year bond yields should support the equity market at current levels in our view. The most appealing sectors in this regard are the banks, REITs, utilities and insurance, which all offer yields of five per cent or higher. Stocks that will benefit from an expected fall in the Australian dollar, and that we have a positive recommendation on, include Macquarie Group, Magellan, a number of healthcare stocks, AMP, Orora, Lend Lease and Westfield. Of course the suitability of any of these stocks or sectors should be discussed with your financial adviser. Source: Ord Minnett Ltd Research

re-price their mortgage books and defend their interest margins. This would also help to keep a lid on house prices, which APRA and the RBA would welcome.

TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe tackles life’s big questions as he samples a new organic health drink.
A
s we approach the halfway mark of another year friends, I’d like to take the time to reflect on the unanswerable questions life has thrown at me so far in 2016. We call these Ponderables. Can chubby people go skinny dipping? Why is chopsticks one of the easiest things to play on the piano, yet the hardest thing to eat with? Do deaf people think we are screaming when we are yawning? If ballet dancers have to dance on their tiptoes, why don’t they just get taller girls?
%AN 10T0 LI A R AUS MADE
If bankers are so good at counting, then why is it most banks have six windows and only one teller? What would happen if you got scared half to death… twice? If a cow laughs, does milk come out her nose? Surely not everybody was Kung Fu Fighting? What cruel-minded sicko decided to put an ‘s’ in the word lisp? How often does Batman get his cape caught in the door of the Batmobile? I reckon it’s more often than you think. In Peter Pan, what was Captain Hook’s name before he got the hook? Why are healthy people so antichocolate? Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a tree, that makes it a plant, therefore chocolate is salad, yeah? If the US president was gay, would that make his husband the First Man? And of course my favourite Ponderable of all time… Can a pig pull a hamstring? Yep, they’re some of the big questions that could keep you up at night.
INSPIRED QUALITY
Luckily the stress of these unanswerable questions dishes with the fun of the following game we call Good, Bad, Ugly. Perfect for when you’re having a quiety with buddies this weekend or even make a PG version for the family road trip these school holidays. It’s easy to play. You simply put forward a scenario that’s Good. Then someone else makes it Bad. Ending with another person creating the inevitable Ugly. Good: Your wife is pregnant. Bad: It’s triplets. Ugly: You had a vasectomy three years ago. See? Easy as. Good: Your husband has ace fashion sense. Bad: He’s a cross-dresser. Ugly: He looks better than you. Ouch. Good: Your son is always studying hard in his room. Bad: He’s watching adult movies on his laptop. Ugly: You’re in them.
It’s a cracking game to play while enjoying a few cold frothy ones and this week’s frothy is a treat from the legends at Mountain Goat Brewery in Victoria. The guys have crafted a pretty cracking range over the last few years and one of the best is the MG Organic Steam Ale. It’s bright and refreshing with a smooth, crisp finish and a semi-peachy aroma that creates an authentic version of the old American steam ale. It’s a solid all-rounder, a great session beer and most importantly, it’s organic people. Meaning the more you drink, the better it is for you. Move over kale, your time here is done. I give the Mountain Goat organic Steam Ale a healthy four out of five thumbs up. MOUNTAIN GOAT ORGANIC STEAM ALE CRAFT BEER 330ML 4.5% Available from Cellarbrations Brightwater Marketplace, Parklands Marketplace, Wises Road, Buderim and Bellvista Tavern. PAM FITS RIGHT IN TO HER NEW COMMUNITY
A
fter spending most of her adult life moving around Central Queensland for her late husband’s career, Pam Hill, 69, decided a Lendlease retirement village would be her final move. The decision to move closer to her children and grandchildren was made and Pam promised herself she would always remain active and connected to her community. “When I moved here I didn’t know anybody other than my family. I was immediately made to feel welcome into the village, but at the same time I felt it was equally important that I made an effort to be included too,” Hill says. As she wanders around the village, ‘oohing’ and

‘ahhing’ at the upgraded community centre, the spectacular library and seniors’ priced hair salon, it becomes clear that Pam is a cherished part of the retirement village community. Pam’s favourite part of retirement living? She lives for her morning water ballet, and her community. “I really enjoy being part of something bigger, like a tribe where we’re all connected in some way, whether it be an activity together, a quiet cup of tea or heading out to the theatre.”

onstruction on Halcyon Lakeside, the third lifestyle community on the Sunshine Coast by Australia’s most awarded over 50s lifestyle developer, is forging ahead with framework going up on the first release of homes. The new gated community is framed
by natural bushland on a unique 13-hectare site within the master planned Parklakes II community at Bli Bli. Along with an enviable five-star lifestyle offering, Halcyon Lakeside overlooks two lakes with 450 metres of lake frontage and access to six kilometres of walking tracks and local shopping.
commercial developments, schools, transport, recreation infrastructure and the newly completed Maroochy River Golf Course. Project Director Chris Carley says Halcyon Landing is the fastest selling over 50s community on the Sunshine Coast, with the first two releases of 52 homes in Stage One sold out, off the plan. “We’ve had a high level of interest
from purchasers who want to be part of a peaceful pocket within a master planned community,” Carley says. “The site’s lake frontage is another major lifestyle drawcard”. “Early buyers are attracted to our model of creating great homes with a feeling of space and lifestyle facilities that are without peer in this market”. Plans have also been revealed for the community’s multimillion dollar Lifestyle and Recreational Precinct, which has a championship-sized bowling green, tennis court, pickleball courts, pools and health and wellness centre. The centrepiece of the Lifestyle and Recreational Precinct is the recreation club, which houses the cinema, library and substantial lounge areas that open to a lovely northern aspect and panoramic views of the hinterland. To see plans for the latest release of architect designed homes in Stage Two please phone 1800 050 555 or visit the Halcyon Landing display home and Halcyon Lakeside Sales Centre located at 27 Waigani Steet, Bli Bli.

MAZDA MX-F SCORES 5 STARS
L
eading independent vehicle safety advocate, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program has released a five-star ANCAP safety rating for the Mazda MX-5. ANCAP CEO James Goodwin says it is a significant improvement from the previous four-star safety rating. “Roadsters present a design challenge for manufacturers in ensuring equivalent levels of occupant protection to conventional cars,’’ he says. “Their structures obviously differ so additional engineering elements are needed in order to provide the same levels of structural safety.” The frontal offset, side impact, pole and whiplash tests each revealed high scores but the most impressive area of assessment was pedestrian protection. The MX-5 has an active, or pop-up, bonnet which is designed to provide extra clearance between a pedestrian’s head and the vehicle’s stiff components beneath. “This active safety feature, which is only on a small number of models in our market, helped it achieve a high score for the protection of adult and child pedestrians,” Goodwin says. The MX-5 achieved a pedestrian protection rating of ‘Good’ scoring 33.72 points out of a possible 36 points. Its closest competitor is the pedestrian airbag equipped Volvo V40 with a score of 31.76.

BUILT FOR COMFORT Citroën has unveiled a preview of its next generation in-vehicle comfort technologies, including an all-new suspension system utilising progressive hydraulic cushions, advanced construction techniques and seating inspired by beds. Referencing its 95-year history in suspension and comfort engineering, Citroen has designed a vehicle that takes more than just suspension into account. Through the Citroën Advanced Comfort program, Citroën addresses the comfort aspects of body stability, acoustics, seats, light, space and ergonomics. The program is present at each stage of the brand vehicle design process. Guided by changing customer expectations, the program supports the design process in terms of both styling and technology. It is visible on current models and will continue to be a mainstay in the future.

GOOD NEWS FOR VW FANS Volkswagen Australia has announced the all-new Golf GTI 40 Years will also be offered with a six-speed manual transmission, and will be available for customers in the third quarter of 2016. Manual transmission-equipped variants of the Golf GTI 40 Years will carry the same specification as DSG transmission-equipped models. Engineers say the Golf GTI 40 Years has strong performance credentials – it is the most powerful production GTI to date, with an engine output of 195kW. A new boost function gives the vehicle a further power-up to 213kW, and also provides 380Nm of torque upon full kickdown of the acceleration for around 10 seconds each time. The 40-year model incorporates some of the best technical features of the earlier Golf GTI performance model including larger brakes, 19-inch Ruby alloy wheels, and adaptive chassis control.

STYLING MAKES SENSE
STRONG GROWTH
Y
ou’ve taken the plunge and signed on to a real estate agency, which means your property is officially on the market. However, the hard work isn’t done. When it comes to selling a property, it’s important that it is marketable and maintains a high standard of presentation. Sydney-based styling guru, Justine Stedman, from Vault Interiors says that styling for under $50 can be as simple as adding five quick and easy items. “There are several different aspects to consider when styling with affordability being a high priority on the list for many, as well as the return on investment. I always like to make sure that my clients know their options available to fit with their budget in regards to the costs of styling. “It is 100 per cent possible to achieve rewarding results even on a small budget.’’ 1. Artwork can have a huge impact and be easy on the wallet. Consider framing your favourite photos and creating a gallery wall for your hallway or above a console table. Buy various sizes to make it visually interesting. A mix of black and white photos can also look great. 2. Floor and table lamps are a great way to create ambiance and change the feeling of a room. With metallic being so on trend you can add instant glamour. If you have an existing but dated overhead hanging pendant, change up the shade for a fresh take. There are plenty of stores that sell items for under $50. 3. Plants can instantly brighten up a room. Stedman recommends small pots placed on dining or coffee
“It is 100 per cent possible to achieve rewarding results even on a small budget” tables. If you don’t have a green thumb try succulents, as they are very low maintenance. A tall palm or fern will work well on the floor next to the entertainment unit or anywhere there is dead space. 4. Cushions and throws – scatter them through the house in various textures and colours. 5. Rugs can anchor a space and create defined zones.
WELCOME BACK ANDREA Re/Max Nambour has welcomed Andrea Pall into the role of Commercial Department manager. Originally from Hungary, Pall moved to Australia 27 years ago. With a background in finance and marketing she become fascinated with the Real Estate Industry and started her first experience in residential sales in 1993. She has worked as a mortgage broker in Brisbane but started a career in commercial real estate in 2008. “Throughout my dealings in commercial real estate in the region, I was fortunate enough to get to know many (people), before my career was put on hold in 2012 when I was diagnosed with cancer. “So in April 2016, when I accepted the position at REMAX Sunshine Coast, you can imagine how keen and enthusiastic I was to come back to my beloved profession: commercial real estate.’’

The Sunshine State has recorded the highest growth in building approvals in April of any state, and are above the national growth rate. Figures released late last month from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the numbers of new dwellings approved in Queensland rose by 2.9 per cent in April. Queensland Government treasurer Curtis Pitt says the figure is more than double the national increase of 1.2 per cent. “In trend terms $1.326 billion new dwellings were approved in Queensland in April which is $178 million more than the same time 12 months ago,’’ he says. “This is terrific news which is supporting tens of thousands of jobs for Queensland tradies and our construction sector. “Queensland is the only state, along with South Australia, where building approvals have risen over the past year.” The news comes as the State Government announces changes to the first home buyers grant. The Great Start Grant program will rise from $15,000 to $10,000 for a period of 12 months and will apply to newly constructed properties priced under $750,000. The Urban Development Institute of Australia has welcomed the boost. However, UDIA’s Queensland branch has spoken out against the introduction of a foreign buyers tax into Queensland announced last week. UDIA Queensland president Stephen Harrison says the new three per cent surcharge on transfer duties for residential properties could have a significant impact on investment and jobs in Queensland. While this new tax will apply to residential property only, its impacts will be felt throughout the entire Queensland economy, he says. “The new surcharge, on top of recent APRA changes in relation to foreign buyers, will significantly increase the cost of investing in Queensland.” Foreign buyers made up 21.9 percent of total buyers in the first quarter of 2016, according to the NAB Quarterly Australian Residential Property Survey.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream are moving in over the Maroochy Bar on the bigger night tides this week with prawns and fowl gut the best bait. Flathead and whiting are on the drift from Goat Island to Twin Waters. You can get luderick and trevally at the motorway bridge pylons. SURF: There are chopper tailor at Alexandra Headland and down to Pincushion with chrome slugs the best bait after sunrise, while baby blue pillies are better at dusk. You can get bream and tarwhine along Mudjimba Beach and up to North Shore, Maroochy. Snapper are being caught late at night off the rocks at Pt Cartwright on pillies. A thrill for hardy late night fishers. OFFSHORE: Mixed reef fish of quality are being caught at the close-in reefs of Murphy’s, The Gneerings and around the Blinker for good-sized cobia. You can get snapper, pearlies and kingies at the Barwon Banks. There are also a few quality red emperor if you are prepared to travel some distance to get to the right spots. FRESHWATER: Somerset Dam is firing for bass and golden perch with shrimps the go for bait. The Sticks north of Kirkleigh, and up to the power lines are the best places to work. Saratoga are climbing all over flies, lures and floated baits up at Borumba Dam. Just look for the rises. A few winter bass can be found upstream in the Noosa River with plastics and spinner baits worth a cast at any log or drop off.

How good was last week? Man, everywhere had waves and the wind was perfect. Scored a screamer from out the back with my best mate hot on my tail racing a very fast section – then it happened! A guy on the inside was second guessing himself which way to go with two flying SUPs coming right at him. He went left, then right, then left. I could float the lip around him and risk getting it wrong or straighten out and save this poor soul. I straightened out and missed him by six inches. There was certainly a great vibe in the water over the past week given how many waves were on offer. This week? Not so much.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23) With the full moon activating your work and daily routine zone, chances are you’ll be burning the midnight oil early in the week. Pace yourself crabs, otherwise you could suffer from a stress-related health issue (like a headache or stomach upset).
LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23) You’re in the mood to socialise and pamper yourself, as you engage in compatible conversations and enjoy life’s little luxuries. Don’t assume you have all the answers though. You have much to learn from others – especially the children in your life.
VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23) This week Jupiter (which is transiting your sign) makes one of the luckiest aspects for the year (with Pluto). So the Universe will provide an opportunity for you to grow and be transformed in exciting new ways … if you choose to take up the challenge.
LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23) Communicating with others is the key this week. But don’t get carried away and exaggerate your ability to contribute. It’s much better to under-promise and over-deliver! When it comes to a family matter, avoid quick fixes. Instead, be patient and do the required research.
SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22) You’re keen to make connections with a wide range of people, as the planets highlight your networking zones (and boost your ability to charm and persuade others). So it’s a wonderful week to initiate ideas and explore concepts within your circle of influence.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21) Monday’s fiery full moon (in your sign) kick-starts an actionpacked week. Then the Jupiter/ Pluto trine (on the weekend) is fabulous for work, money, travel and adventure. Lady Luck is definitely on your side as you make positive changes and accept exciting new challenges.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20) On Monday, take a look within. It’s the perfect time for some quiet contemplation, as the full moon stimulates your spirituality zone and you receive guidance from your inner self. Wonderful opportunities are waiting, but you must grab them or they will pass you by.
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19) Early in the week your rebellious Aquarian spirit is activated by the fiery full moon, when you feel adventurous and do the exact opposite of what’s expected. Others may be surprised (or even shocked) by your behaviour but you need to do what’s right for you.
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20) Are you bored to bits with your job? The full moon (and Saturn) stir up your career zone, so many fish will feel frustrated and frazzled with work (or lack of work). Be careful what you wish for – ambitious aspirations are fine but you also need to keep your feet on the ground.
Solve all the clues and reveal the eight-letter word spelled down the middle of the grid.

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21) This week’s stars urge you to concentrate on a rickety close relationship, and get talking about problems. Don’t worry if you’re going over old ground – that’s exactly what’s needed at the moment. Then Jupiter gives your home life a welcome boost on the weekend!

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21) Attached bulls – things could get hot and heavy at Casa Taurus on Monday night, when the full moon invigorates your intimacy zone. Singles – you’re in a hurry to find a dependable partner but you’ll have to be patient. Take your time and don’t accept second-best!

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20) Monday’s full moon encourages you to visualise your dreams for the future, and then act. Be inspired by actor Corin Nemec “Never let life impede on your ability to manifest your dreams. Dig deeper into your dreams, believe that anything is possible, and make it happen.”

THE LAST WORD
SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST FISH Richard O’Leary hopes the two family members with scales fare better than those with feathers.
H
is face a study in concentration, my fiveyear-old counts out the tiny pellets of fish food for Hungry Sugar O’Leary – the name of the bright blue fighting fish for which he is now responsible. He’s careful not to give it too little or too much, after the dire warnings of the pet shop attendant just a week earlier. It’s a message that has really resonated with him, which may explain why he became so upset when he accidently put too much food into the bowl. In his mind that meant instant death. He calmed down once we explained the fish would have to eat all the pellets for there to be a problem. I can understand his consternation – since I’ve become a Fishocrit (a vegetarian who eats fish), I’ve killed more chickens than I ever did when I was a consumer of roasted birds and nuggets.
To be fair, they were taken by foxes, hawks and snakes from my coop. Still, they were my responsibility, and each time I noticed a chick missing or found the remains of a carcass strewn across the chicken pen, I felt I had let them

It’s the same responsibility my youngest feels towards his fish, so I can understand his dedication to his duty. His seven-year-old brother is just as conscientious with his bright red fighting fish called Ethan Archer O’Leary (in honour of the names he was nearly given
as a baby), which swims in the adjoining bowl to Hungry Sugar. They are in separate bowls because fighting fish have the unedifying habit of killing each other in a battle over who looks the best and brightest – they could easily be called narky narcissist fish. But the fact they are in separate bowls, and they each has an owner committed to their cause, means their chances of survival are better than average. Although, I have warned the boys to make sure the dog’s water bowl is always full, because I caught Truman with his snout perched precariously over the edge of one of the fish bowls the other day. But even that may be forlorn thinking. Although I’d love to give him the benefit of the doubt, he did look more hungry than thirsty. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
