OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in biodegradable plastic.

hen I was 15 years old I came home from school and told my parents I wanted to become a racehorse trainer. I was told in no uncertain terms that was not going to happen, and in retrospect it was probably good advice for someone who had only ridden a horse once, and had fallen off when the horse intentionally walked under a low lying branch to dislodge me. The story has been a little different for Stuart Kendrick, the Sunshine Coast’s leading racehorse trainer who has made every post a winner during his 27-year career. He’s the subject of our cover story as we go behind the scenes of the racing industry ahead of next week’s running of the Caloundra Cup. Also this week you get the chance to have a quick chat with one of the world’s best surfboard shapers, meet the man who has turned making frames for reading glasses into an art form, and there’s plenty of property to check out. Enjoy and I’ll see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

SHAPING A NEW LIFE

When he met his Australian wife in Hawaii, Beach Beat surfboard shaper Matt Wilkerson left the US behind to begin a new life in Australia. WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

We just moved into our home in Tewantin last October. My wife was from Sydney’s northern beaches and her folks moved to Sunshine Beach. We came up to visit and both agreed this area would be perfect to raise our sons.

Building a line of boards at the Beach Beat factory in Maroochydore. I brought my designs as well as Larry Bertlemann’s. I have actually gone back and taken the ‘Stinger’ design, it’s a single fin with a flyer high up in the outline. I am also producing high performance shortboards with the best materials that give a nice strength to weight ratio, as well as longboards.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My family includes my beautiful wife Katrina, my son Marlon and our new addition Kaimana. I never would have dreamed I could be lucky enough to have a family life of my own. We got a late start but made it happen.

FIRST CAR? My first car was a 1975 Dodge Dart swinger. I loved that car but unfortunately I was hit by an intoxicated driver and it was totalled. American steel saved my life though.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? My wedding day. Many years ago I was living at Keiki Beach and a mutual friend suggested I meet her friend. I won’t ever forget the first time I saw my wife. Kat was working with the Quicksilver Foundation and was on Oahu for work. We became great friends. It was a pretty magical road that ended up with me moving to Sydney where we married on her folks’ veranda among family and friends.

FIRST JOB? My first job was for Rusty Surfboards. At that time they produced 10,000 boards, all hand-shaped. I learned so much from the shapers there about design and use of tools. I was given the opportunity to travel and represent the brand at trade shows, which allowed me to network and meet so many people that are still friends to this day. One memorable experience was being taken to Tavarua Island to surf those amazing

waves. At the time I was rooming with Stephen Slater who was an amazing longboarder, and he introduced me to Donald Takayama. DT made a completely different style of surfboard. They were perfectly manufactured. He had charged more and did fewer numbers due to the labour intensive process, but sold everything he made. It was a great experience.

Music is very important to a shaper, we have such an unusual job really, in a room with no windows and completely solitary. Music is the company we keep. I really like Hawaiian music, and a wide range including reggae, hip hop, classic rock, hipster jams and Motown.

GREATEST REGRET No regrets. Move forward. Larry Bertlemann always said to me, “Yesterday’s gone, tomorrow’s not promised, live in the moment”, and it always stuck with me.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Surfing makes me happy. All kinds of waves and all the different boards. It’s wide open. You have so many choices.

NRL OR AFL? NRL. After seeing the Cowboys vs Broncos grand final I really became a fan.

COVER STORY

THE HARD YARDS OF HORSE RACING The Sunshine Coast will host one of its biggest race days next week with the running of the Caloundra Cup – but what is it like behind all the glitz and glamour? Richard O’Leary reports.

12.31PM SUNDAY JUNE 12, 2016

T

he sun is a dull yellow smudge on a grey crayon sky as the horses are led into the barriers for the second race of the day. The bright colours of the jockeys’ silks offer temporary relief from the greys and browns of the racegoers rugged up against the first real winter day of the year. A three-year-old filly called Highdini is the favourite, a brown horse with one white sock – her rider wears green silks with a white sash. As she moves in with the rest of the horses, the punters hope she can record her first victory from eight starts. For trainer Stuart Kendrick and his staff there is so much more at stake. For months they’ve been getting up at 3am to put Highdini through her paces, and this race is considered her best chance to finish first. She is also racing for a share of $14,000, but for her owners that money is secondary to the value a win would have on her future career as a broodmare. The official starter scans the barriers to make sure all the horses are ready – and releases the gates. The familiar patter of race caller Paul Dolan gallops along with them as they settle into stride. Away they go and from a good gate Highdini is one of the first to go… 12 My Weekly Preview | June 24, 2016

thoroughbred takes a break from his feed to see what she is doing. Horses and people criss-cross the yards – everyone has a role, and they get on with it. Amid all this busyness, Kendrick is all business. He’s polite and softly-spoken, but there’s no doubt who is in charge. The 45-year-old has been doing this for more than half his life, after being given an over-the-hill horse called Page Lad to train when he was just 18 years old. Kendrick had no pedigree for training thoroughbreds, although he’d spent many years riding and showing Arabians. “He [Page Lad] never won a race, so it was probably a good grounding for me because if it was too good too early you’d think that’s how it’s supposed to happen. I used to ride him myself, ride him around the cane fields of Mackay and just had a love for it and it just grew from there. Started off with one, got another one and they started to win from there.” The winners kept coming. After a few years in Mackay he tried his luck in Brisbane, where he learnt secrets of the trade from some of the best trainers in Australia, as well as a few lessons about life. “It wasn’t easy early. We had to work really hard in the early days. I was working in a warehouse in the day to pay the bills, myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

struggling to get owners and horses and we had no money, and we had cardboard boxes for our furniture.” After ten years, and having proved to himself he could mix it with the best of them, he returned to Mackay and won five straight trainer’s premierships. He also came across a young filly called Doubtfilly, which would go on to win six races and nearly $700,000 dollars. But it was a race she didn’t win that gave Kendrick his greatest moment in the sport. “The big thrill for us was we went down to Sydney and she ran in the Golden Slipper [2012], a $3 million race, the richest two-year-old race in the world, and she ran fourth in that. Coming from Mackay and doing that, it was a big thrill.” It wasn’t long after that run that Kendrick moved his family to the Sunshine Coast, where he has won the last two trainer’s premierships and is on track for a third. He is the biggest trainer on the Coast, with about a quarter of the 250 horse boxes available, and he employs 15 staff. But if he’s complacent about that success he doesn’t show it. “You’ve got to love doing it. On Saturday the rain was coming horizontal and we still had to get up and do the job. It’s one thing that I’ve always done, rain, hail or shine, we do the work. If you can’t do the work you shouldn’t do the job. It’d be a hard job if you didn’t like it for sure.” Tara Lambert is one of those people who loves what she does. The 25-year-old rides trackwork for Kendrick. “Long hours sometimes, especially race days, we start at 3.30 and leave for the races at 9 o’clock, so it’s a long day. You don’t get home until 5 or 6 o’clock at night. But it’s all worth it in the end.” The appeal of the job comes down to one simple thing: being able to work with horses. “Just the animal. You wouldn’t be in it if you didn’t love horses. It is exciting, especially when you get a lot of babies come through and you handle them and educate them up until they get to the races and then you see them race and

when they perform well it’s a big thrill to know you’ve been a part of that.” “There’s always good banter around the stables, we have a laugh and muck around.” On cue, one of the larrikins you find at a racetrack chips a trackwork rider who has jumped on the wrong horse. “Where you from?” he asks. “Coffs Harbour,” the trackworker says. “Well, at least you got that right.” The centre of activity every morning is the walker (a large steel, circular contraption which allows half a dozen horses to exercise at once), where the thoroughbreds warm up. The stable names of each horse are written on a whiteboard at its entrance: Cupcake,

and drop her back in trip and see if she hits the line a bit harder.” ”Really happy how she worked there this morning, and she’s pulled up a treat. She’s very fit. Hopefully that pays off on the weekend.”

5 DAYS LATER… Homeward bound, on the inside Gallant Saga is just the leader from Lady Manhattan given full bore…Lady Manhattan is in front, Nero D’Avola coming at it, Glenturret on the outside and Cape Denison from nowhere, but Nero D’Avola [wins] from Glenturret second, Lady Manhattan third, wide out Cape Denison fourth, then Mighty Tax, Jerusalem, followed by More Savings

Barbie, Bruiser, Snow and Dash. Lambert retrieves Penny (the stable name of Highdini) from her chute and steers her out to the track so the threeyear-old can have a morning workout with a stablemate, Ginger, whose racing name is Rare Occurrence. Kendrick finds his vantage point in front of his stables and watches Highdini. The first 200 metres is run at evens (three-quarter pace) before the riders click them up to a working gallop for the final 600 metres. It’s not a full gallop – Kendrick wants to leave her with a little ‘petrol in the tank’ for the race on Sunday. “Tara [Lambert] says she wouldn’t blow a candle out,” Kendrick says. “She’s very fit, she’s coming back in distance from 1400 [metres] to 1200 [metres] this week. She didn’t finish her race right off, so we’re just going to ride her a bit quieter

and then came Slickster, Highdini didn’t go on… Another defeat. To make matters worse, Highdini takes fright at another runner as she returns to the winning post and her rider jumps off. Lambert catches her and leads her off the track. “She got back into a fairly nice position, but coming into the straight she had pretty restrictive room and she had to come back to the inside,” Kendrick says. “Brad (jockey Brad Pengelly) said she didn’t quite sprint like he would have hoped for her to finish it off. Hopefully we can bounce back.” But it won’t be in next week’s Caloundra Cup – Kendrick doesn’t have a runner in that race, something he’s working on rectifying in time for next year’s event – just another 300 or so 3am starts to go.

OUR GARDEN EXPO VOTED BEST IN THE STATE The Sunshine Coast’s Queensland Garden Expo is officially the best in the state, taking out the Events Award category at the Parks and Leisure Australia Queensland Regional Awards of Excellence. Councillor Jason O’Pray says the annual awards recognise excellence, outstanding initiatives and innovation. “Over 31 years, this successful community driven event has generated immense benefits for its supporters, partners, local businesses and the Sunshine Coast region. A conservative estimate of the 2015 Queensland Garden Expo’s economic benefit for the Sunshine Coast region is $4 million.’’ The expo is on July 8 to 10 at the Nambour Showgrounds.

$600,000

The Sunshine Coast’s creeks, rivers, farms and bushland will be better protected thanks to $600,000 in natural resources management funds. Minister for State Development Dr Anthony Lynham last week announced the funding for the strategic project to be carried out under the Queensland Regional Natural Resource Management Investment Program 2013–18. “The $600,000 funding will allow SEQ Catchments to continue their efforts to improve targeted waterways in the region including the Noosa River, Maroochy River, North Maroochy, Mooloolah River, Mooloolah Valley and the Blackall Range,” he says.

SAFETY ACTION PLAN

The priority actions the Sunshine Coast Council and its partners will undertake over the next four years to create safer communities are outlined in the Sunshine Coast Community Safety Action Plan 2016–2020, endorsed last week. Councillor Jenny McKay says the Sunshine Coast Community Safety Action Plan complements a number of other existing council policies. “A safe community is one in which all sectors of the community work together in a coordinated and collaborative way, forming partnerships to promote safety, manage risks, and reduce the fear of harm.”

HOMES DESTROYED IN FREAK WINDS The clean-up has continued this week after gale force winds reaching 100 kilometres per hour tore through the Sunshine Coast on Sunday. Police declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act in Mooloolaba on Monday following Sunday’s torrential rain. Around 30 people were left homeless when, what is being described as a mini tornado, ripped through their properties. Homes were severely damaged in the area of Akeringa Place, Corowa Court and Amarina Avenue, Mooloolaba. SES volunteers received 300 calls for help across south-east Queensland and Energex reported more than 9000 homes lost power.

PROFILE

AN EYE FOR THE UNUSUAL

German boat builder Fritz Schwarz found a brilliant business idea staring him in the face. Words: Leigh Robshaw

F

ritz Schwarz is bucking today’s trend for mass produced, plastic everything by handmaking a product that really goes against the grain – or is that with the grain? Fritz Frames eyewear is the opposite of today’s generic glasses and sunglasses that are a dime a dozen. Schwarz, a German boat builder by trade, painstakingly crafts each pair of glasses by hand in his Diddillibah workshop using Australian hardwoods like jarrah, Victorian ash and blackbean, as well as PNG rosewood and silver ash. Schwarz and his Australian wife Mary moved to Australia from Germany in 2006 and started the business in 2010, and within six months had won an ODMA Award, Australia’s highest industry award for glasses design. “I was actively looking for a product I could make and it was staring me in the eye,” he says. “Mary was the driving force for the wood on the product. She just looked at my glasses and said if you make some for me I don’t want black carbon fibre – put some wood on it. It was quite a natural thing at the time. We lived in North Germany surrounded by boat yards and wood working people – it was odd that I didn’t make it out of wood to begin with.” Schwarz was born and raised on Rugen Island, in the Baltic Sea. He built wooden yachts for many years before branching out into furniture and kiteboards. When Mary suggested he turn his talents to making glasses, he began applying the same methods he’d learnt in boat building – working with materials like carbon fibre, wood veneer glues and spray paint – and applying them to his handcrafted frames. It was a laborious process, but he found people were willing to pay upwards of $1000 for what he calls, “face jewellery”.

Fritz Schwarz makes timber glasses that are in demand around the world

IMAGES: TRACY NAUGHTON

“It is right on your nose and it can change so much about your personality and even your wellbeing and your feelings,” he says. “The people that love them are people who have an acquired taste for eyewear and believe in identifying with an individual product. “We’ve just engraved number 2008, so in the whole six years of our company’s existence, we didn’t make more than 2000 glasses. So you can be fairly sure you won’t run across some person on the street wearing the same pair of glasses as you. “Our first pair of glasses was sold to a student to study in England. That was in the Brisbane store. It just shows that people don’t have to be wealthy, they’re just in love with the product and will spend that money. It’s not unheard of to spend that sort of money for a watch. A watch is really small with a big secret inside and no one knows what it is. It’s the secret inside that makes it tick.” The secret of Fritz Frames’ success lies in the meticulous way Schwarz crafts

his glasses, spending around ten hours perfecting each pair. Standard frames are cut by machine and the plastic polished in a tumbler. In contrast, Schwarz’s frames are made of an intricate timber composite – six layers of timber in between layers of carbon fibre and other fibre reinforcements. These are sanded by hand many times, then painted and polished, and an adjustable hinge allows for a custom fit. “You have to be on the ball,” Schwarz says. “The wood veneer is about half a millimetre thick and when you’re sanding it, if you don’t concentrate you can sand a hole in it and you can basically throw the pair in the rubbish. We have two young talented girls here working with me and that’s about as much as I can handle – I have to oversee many of the steps and you can’t get people qualified to do that sort of work. It’s a very specific kind of job.” Since its inception in 2010, Fritz Frames has grown to encompass more than 50 shapes and colours and is now

being shipped around Australia and internationally. Schwarz has won the ODMA Award multiple times for sunglasses, sports glasses, children’s glasses, women’s eyewear and men’s eyewear. “The uniqueness of our product comes from the material, not so much the outline or the shape. The backbones are fairly solid, with good carbon fibre; they’re not 100 per cent wood. That’s not a suitable material as it doesn’t have the strength unless you make it really big and chunky, and then it doesn’t look good.” Schwarz is now looking to develop a range of eyewear from sustainable materials, which will sell for around $500 and a high-end range to sell at around the $5000 mark, which could include features like diamonds, gold and platinum. It sounds extravagant, but he says people will pay up to $25,000 for the perfect pair of glasses. “My glasses do make you about 50 per cent more intelligent and are likely to encourage wage increase,” he laughs. “You get promoted, so a lot of people buy them for that reason.”

Local Bed Retailer Will Give Away Over One Million Dollars In Discounts On His Entire Inventory Between 24th June to 27th June Because He Has A Tax Problem And Wants You To Be The Beneficiary Instead Of The Australian Tax Office My business has had a great year so far in 2016. In fact, we’ve done so well I’m probably going to pay double the tax I did last year. And the way it works in the retail trade is the more stock you have on hand, the more tax you pay. Herein lies my problem You see, without considering the tax consequences I just bought in a whole lot of stock and I must get rid of it to avoid being hit with a huge bill from the ATO. So my accountant’s told me to hold a massive clearance sale to get rid of my stock before the end of financial year. At up to 67% off all stock, I know I’m practically throwing away quality merchandise. I don’t care. I have to get rid of them.

New research shows more Aussie women than men have tattoos HELGA ESTEB / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

Getting inked has become so socially acceptable, says McCrindle Research, that the percentage of Australian women with a tattoo now exceeds that of their male counterparts. According to the researcher, one in five Australian men (19 per cent) have one or more tattoos, but the proportion of females getting inked has risen to one in four – 24 per cent. Design fashions have changed, too. The biggest growth in tattoo designs is for words or a phrase – 19 per cent – but images and symbols are favoured by 72 per cent of Australians.

ELLE OF A WOMAN AT 52 Elle Macpherson says the secret to looking good in her 50s is nurturing, rather than punishing, regimes. The Aussie supermodel focuses on maintaining loving relationships, laughing and staying hydrated. “I’m a lot gentler with myself now – no strict regimes,” she told Allure magazine. “I don’t believe in extremes. My exercise is moderate, 45 minutes of doing something outside in nature every day. And no strict diets. I don’t look at the number on the scale, I am more concerned with how I feel. I want to be energised and feel strong.” She also takes a daily dose of The Super Elixir (from her own range of supplements) $145 from welleco.com.au.

MY LIFE

LOVE PASTA? Banish the bloat by eating healthier versions of pasta that are gluten free and more nutritious, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.

P

asta tops the list when it comes to the world’s most versatile food. It is cheap, convenient, and tasty. But it tends to cause digestive troubles for many people. But what if it didn’t need to be that way? Have you ever been to Italy, eaten a lot of pasta, and noticed that you feel fine? However, when you return home, you notice that when you eat pasta you instantly bloat? This has a lot to do with the type of grain that is used, and how the pasta has been made. Traditional Sicilian pasta is made from locally grown durum wheat, which contains the nutrient-rich germ and bran. These authentic versions of pasta are handmade and eaten fresh the same day. Western society commonly uses hybridised wheat that is far higher in gluten than traditionally grown wheat. The germ and bran are also typically removed during processing. We end up

with high-gluten, preservative-filled, ultra-refined white pastas that are almost empty of nutrition. This modern pasta creates a lot of intestinal inflammation. Here are a few healthier options: White rice pasta – It looks like wheat-based pasta but it’s gluten free. Chickpea pasta – It’s gluten free and is a great way to eat pasta high in protein. Brown rice pasta – Gluten free and containing very few ingredients, brown rice pasta is a high fibre, nutrient-rich, healthy go-to meal. Quinoa pasta – Quinoa is actually a seed, not a grain, and is also a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids so it’s great for vegetarians. Buckwheat Pasta – It’s actually gluten free and has a mild taste and is similar to wholewheat pasta.

Menopause: Are HRT or Bio-Identical hormones prolonging the inevitable? Know the Facts Hot flushing, insomnia, mood swings, and migraines can be debilitating and unbearable for many women, though completely unnecessary. HRT may seem to be the only answer so can you remain on HRT or Bio-Identical Hormones for the rest of your life? Are you at risk of prolonging the inevitable? Many women have been prescribed HRT for years, even decades beyond the expected end of menopause. Is this really necessary? Unfortunately, when it comes time to look at reducing hormone replacement, often women will go through exactly the same symptoms of menopause as late as in her 70’s, just as she would have years earlier, though now not as young or robust in health to be able to handle it as well. The symptoms of menopause are only expected to affect a woman for 18 months from onset to completion, yet we are treating the condition for up to 20 years or more. In our western culture, our lifestyle goes against how a woman’s body functions, and we have forgotten how to pass on the important information about how the body transitions smoothly.

“It is a lot easier than most women know, and are often shocked to find out.” Menopausal symptoms arise when there is the sudden drop in hormones that cause the symptoms, rather than a slow decline over years. Your adrenal glands also produce hormones for a smooth transition as long as you allow them to. It’s not as difficult as many expect to reduce and sometimes completely eradicate symptoms of menopause within as little as a month when the factors involved are addressed. Hormones rely on cholesterol, an individualised diet to control your hormone fluctuations, adrenal support, healthy strains of specific gut bacteria, and a healthy liver. Addressing these systems at the same time can promote hormone production, not only resolving menopausal symptoms, but anti-aging as well. The good news is that it’s quite simple to do, and can have a very big impact in a very short period of time. You CAN get off HRT, and get on with a healthy life. If you’d like to know more, call for a free half hour consultation with one of our health practitioners, where you’ll learn about everything that causes hormonal and mood problems, and how to achieve optimal health. If you’d like to know more, call the centre and arrange a free half hour consultation, or visit www.advancedwellness.com.au

TRAVELLING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

A group of Sunshine Coast breast cancer survivors and supporters recently took on the trek of a lifetime. WORDS: Candice Holznagel

A

s Dianne Olson stood on the crumbling rocks and looked at the spanning rice fields below, she paused to reflect. As hard as trekking the Great Wall of China is, it’s nothing compared to the physical and mental battle of breast cancer. “We all have two lives. The second one begins when we realise we only have one.’’ This Confucius quote has rung true like no other for the Sunshine Coast woman who for the past 18 months has been fighting an aggressive (grade three) fast-growing tumour. She has undergone numerous surgeries, six months of chemotherapy and 18 treatments of the breakthrough drug Herceptin. “The treatment for cancer took away my hair, my eyebrows and eyelashes, and my breasts. All the lovely feminine assets I had were tampered with or lost temporarily and permanently,’’ she says. “The lesson I have learnt is that love goes beyond looks. The reality: chemotherapy is horrible. “It saves our lives but the process is the pits. The truth is, I didn’t want people to feel sorry for me. I never wanted to be a victim. I wanted to be a survivor.” And survive she has. Olson has recently returned from a five-day trek across some of the most treacherous sections of the 2300-year-old wall. Alongside Coast locals, breast cancer survivor Susan Hirst and friends Sandra Reardon, Liz Ward and Kim Cameron, Olson took on the National Breast Cancer Foundation’s Steps Towards a Cure. For Sandra Reardon, it is also a very personal challenge and one she tackled for three important reasons. “My father was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago, one of the first males,’’ she says. “Secondly, I was alongside two of my best friends who are currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer. Thirdly, 18

years ago my husband and I built the first free standing day hospital for cancer patients on the Sunshine Coast. “By walking the wall I can raise awareness and funds to assist in research.’’ Together, the women raised more than $43,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation, which has contributed more than $115 million to 400 Australian-based research projects to assist those affected by breast cancer. When the NBCF was launched in 1994,

Without research, the drugs we now have to contain this disease wouldn’t exist and the consequence of that is I wouldn’t be here today. “Reflecting on the trip, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I have come home with wonderful, memories… as a team we would like to thank the community, family and supporters. “It’s very hard to admit when you are not strong emotionally – everyone witnessed me at my most vulnerable

Susan Hirst, Sandra Reardon, Liz Ward, Dianne Olson and Kim Cameron in China 30 per cent of women diagnosed with the disease passed away. Through research, in less than 20 years, that percentage has halved. Today, the foundation has a clear goal: to achieve zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030. It’s a goal the Sunshine Coast women are 100 per cent behind. “I want to bring two important messages. Early detection is the key to reaching the goal of zero deaths by 2030 in Australia so check those boobies,’’ Olson says. “Secondly, research is so important. The treatment alone can cost in a year over $200,000, if it wasn’t for the NBCF lobbying to get these drugs onto our PBS.

during the challenge.’’ This year’s trek raised more than $285,000 with 45 men and women taking part in the adventure. They’ve come back home feeling exhilarated and proud of their achievements. “The trek is over and we are now left with incredible memories and comradery,’’ Liz Ward says. “(I wanted to) show actual physical and emotional support for friends and loved ones going through breast cancer (and) to be present and a part of the experiences for these women in their journey of diagnosis, treatment and recovery.’’

For Kim Cameron, it has also been about making a difference. “While I personally haven’t been affected, I’ve had a scare but have also been supporting breast cancer for a long time,’’ she says. “I’ve had girlfriends go through the fight and they give me inspiration to help combat the disease and stop others having to face the same. “Why did I do it? For my daughter and all daughters. Imagine their world if NBCF can achieve their goal of zero deaths.” Fellow trekker Susan Hirst was diagnosed 18 months ago, just days after competing in the 240-kilometre Rio Tinto Ride for Cancer and says the walk was challenging, but has brought back her zest for life. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer and my world as I knew it turned upside down. Would I ever be fit and be able to get back to my old life? The answer is a big yes,’’ Hirst says. “Having arrived home in Buderim after an amazing 10 days in China, I know that life goes on after the diagnosis of cancer, you just have to push a bit harder sometimes. “We have pushed ourselves so hard, conquered our fears, continued on when we thought we could not because there was always someone to lean on. We have laughed until our sides hurt, we have cried alone and more often together . “We have shared so much and I now have four lifelong friends to share these memories with together for all time. “I have come back with many happy memories. As Chairman Mao said: ‘You are not a true hero ‘til you have walked the Great Wall of China’. “We are heroes and I am fine. Now, what next?” Note: The trip to China was self-funded by each participant and all money raised went to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

MY OPINION

LOSING STREAK

FAIRYTALE FRIENDS

Nugget has some advice that will get the Brisbane Lions back on track in no time.

Seeing Princess Mary and Princess Kate chatting together at Royal Ascot was a magic moment for gushing royalist Sami Muirhead.

S

o pretty much all my imaginary best friends were at the one flash party and it was a case of sensory overload. It was nearly too much for me because it was so exciting. Princess Mary and Princess Kate fancied up and rubbed frilled frocks at a very fabulous Royal Ascot Race Day. My two idols were chatting away like old friends and looked more like sisters as they took in the grandeur of the iconic race meet. It was one of the best scenes I have ever seen in my clearly shallow life, the two brunette beauties laughing away in their exclusive princess club. Our Mary has just done so well. At 44 years of age she is fluent in several languages, has a cupboard full of tiaras, four gorgeous children and a prince to hang out with. To think that fairytale started at a corner pub in Sydney when she met old Fred. I certainly never met any princes hanging out at the local Bundaberg pub back in the day. I did score myself a bloke who turned out to be a drug dealer. I did not know that at the time. He told me he was a horticulturalist. I just cannot get enough of Kate and her elegant fashion and her little royal cherubs in their smocked pinafores and overalls. I know being a royalist is not popular these days, but I love the tradition and the beauty the monarchy brings to our world.

The most hilarious part of the two princesses standing side by side was the fact both were wearing name badges. I mean, who the heck does not know who Catherine is? Do you think you are standing there having a conversation saying to yourself, ‘Hmmm, where do I know this lady from? Is she from my gym? Is she a mum from school?’ Nope. I can safely say Kate did not need a name badge. But still the good old traditional Brits stuck one on her white lace frock. Mary had one too. I once told my husband Kate was one of the most famous people in the world. We were at a basketball game in Maddison Square Garden and someone named LeBron James was shooting hoops. We had a huge marital debate that night over who was more famous between the athlete and the princess. We will never agree on the answer but we did Google it. Jesus Christ is the most famous person in the world, according to one list. Another list had Justin Bieber coming in at number one. Different horses for different courses. Which brings us back nicely to the races. Name tags! It was a case of overkill, but perhaps we could take a leaf out of their book and introduce compulsory name tags at any Aussie gathering. After having three kids and drinking my weight in cab sav over the years, my ability to recall names is really bad.

O

nce a great club and the pride of the Australian Football League, the Brisbane Lions are now an out of control dumpster fire that threatens to be a bigger disaster than a Charlie Sheen themed amusement park. With the bye looming for Justin Leppitsch and his men, now is the perfect time to look at what has gone wrong and how the hell they fix it. Being the solution focused bunch we are here, we want to help.

CUBS, CUBS AND MORE CUBS One of the main reasons the boys are getting smashed on a regular basis is that the average age of their playing roster is 11. It’s very hard to maintain scoreboard pressure when your midfield need to come off every five minutes for a Popper and a fruit roll-up. So Leppa needs to treat them accordingly. When they play well, he’ll take them to Dreamworld, when they play poorly, no Disney channel for a week. Simple.

BAD NEWS IS GOOD NEWS One of the things that really hurts the Lions is that we are always remembering back to the ‘good old days’ when they truly were the Kings of the AFL jungle. Past glories can haunt any team if they fail to live up to them. What about if you don’t have any? I say the club should

revert back to the old Brisbane Bears name – the Bad News Bears had no past glories so there is nothing to live up to. And to really get those turnstiles spinning, bring back the club’s greatest ever (marketing) tool, Warwick Capper.

“It’s very hard to maintain scoreboard pressure when your midfield need to come off every five minutes for a Popper. . .” MORE COACHES THAN GREYHOUND Poor old Justin Leppitsch, the former All Australian fullback’s coaching job is under more pressure than a see-saw sporting Laurie Oakes and Meatloaf at either end, with constant calls to flick him. What the Lions need now is not fewer coaches, but a s--t load more. Every player needs one, to school them up in advanced footy tactics such as kicking and catching. Hell, I say even bring in Tina Arena as a singing coach for the three times a year they get to sing the club song.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

THE INCOME CONUNDRUM

W

e have recently discussed the Reserve Bank’s decision to cut interest rates and the likelihood of more to follow before year’s end. A steady decline in interest rates since the financial crisis has seen investors drifting away from cash as a sufficient means of income generation. The push into yield was clearly evident after the RBA’s announcement, with higher yielding sectors, such as property trusts, industrials and utilities driven higher. Key yield stocks we favour in this area include ANZ Bank and Westpac. Westpac opened the interim results season for banks. While first-half cash earnings of $3.904 billion missed our

forecast by nearly four per cent, the overall indication was that conditions remain stable for banks. Improved margins and moderate volume growth underpinned growth in net interest income, although non-interest income faltered. A decline in fees was a consistent message throughout results season. The drop in fees for Westpac led to us downgrading FY16 and FY17 earnings forecasts by about three per cent, although our dividend forecasts fared better given Westpac’s strong relative capital position and organic capital generation. The interim dividend of $0.94 per share was flat on the last half and was struck on an elevated 80 per cent payout ratio. We believe that Westpac has the ability to generate organic capital to meet a growing dividend trajectory while maintaining sector-leading prudential capitalisation. New ANZ CEO Shayne Elliott showed decisive action on several fronts at ANZ’s interim result, demonstrating to investors that the bank is getting on

Darryl Watt is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

“We believe that Westpac has the ability to generate organic capital to meet a growing dividend trajectory. . .” with the job of reallocating capital, and improving efficiency and returns. The headline cash earnings of $2.782 billion were significantly below our forecast of

$3.553 billion, but several significant items caused most of the shortfall. This included writing off software development, an impairment of the group’s investment in AmBank and restructuring expenses. Setting aside these charges, the underlying result was still 1.5 per cent below our estimate, mostly due to weaker fee income. Operationally, the underlying net interest margin was up one basis point, costs were lower and provisioning for bad and doubtful debts were moderate. The re-basing of its dividend – an 80 cents per share interim dividend represents a new target payout ratio between 60 to 65 per cent – was in response to ongoing macro and regulatory uncertainty. WINTER JAZZ FEST HEATS UP Jazz band Galapagos Duck will help the region celebrate the inaugural Nambour Winter Jazz Fest next month. It was in 1969 when a group of musicians formed to play the winter season at the Kosciuszko Ski Chalet. They have gone on to win national and international awards and have performed throughout America, Asia and Europe, working alongside the likes of Nina Simone and Ray Charles, James Morrison, Tommy Emmanuel and the Australian Ballet. Now, they’re heading to Nambour to help launch the festival, which will be hosted by Sassy Jazz and The Bison Bar. The Bison Bar owner Peter Townson says the Nambour Winter Jazz Fest has been born out of the successful monthly jazz events held at the venue. “The jazz has been really popular,’’ he says. “We’ve been getting a full house every time.’’ The boutique event will include a day of jazz music, wine and food. Along with Galapagos Duck, the festival will also feature artists Ingrid James, Trevor Hart, Robyn Brown, Ewan MacKenzie and Jeunae Rogers. The Nambour Winter Jazz Fest is on July 30 and 31 at The Bison Bar and the C-Square Courtyard. Tickets are limited. To book visit nambourwinterjazzfest.com.au.

A Moulin Rouge themed feast of magic, music, comedy and cabaret is heading to the Sunshine Coast. With a line-up of singers, dancers, aerial artists and illusionists, The Paris Underground is a subversion of the classic French cabaret. Bringing together a diverse range of performers, the show features one of Australia’s few female illusionists, Julia Madotti as well as circus artist Hannah Trott, tap-dancer Eden Read, burlesque artists Kelly Ann Doll and magician and show co-creator Richard Vegas. The Paris Underground Cabaret is at The Events Centre, Caloundra on July 1 at 8pm. Tickets are $42.

This year marks the 10-year celebration of the Coast’s largest festival – the Caloundra Music Festival. Thousands of people are expected to flock to Kings beach for the four day festival, which will get underway on September 30. Artist announcements began this month with organisers confirming pop rock band Thirsty Merc will return to the stage. Joining the band will be one of Australia’s most iconic acts, Icehouse, led by frontman Iva Davies. Folk and blues singer Kim Churchill and multi-instrumentalist Ladyhawke have also signed up for the Sunshine Coast Council-supported event. The Caloundra Music Festival is on September 30 to October 3. Visit caloundramusicfestival.com.

find stories that resonate on a human, empathetic level and projects that exist to encourage people to feel and reflect. One such project is Mother, a one-woman play by Daniel Keene and directed by Matt Scholten. Hazlehurst stars as Christy, a homeless, ageing woman, living on the outskirts of suburbia. Becoming somewhat of a celebrity, and attracting the curiosity of locals, Christy is not shy of an audience and amuses herself with telling anyone who’ll listen the story of her life. Beneath her story, her wild exaggerations and fantastic tales of loves lost and struggles overcome, there are truths that haunt her. Mother will be staged at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on October 25. Tickets are $48 for adults and $38 for those under 26.

NONI TREADS THE BOARDS Don’t miss the opportunity to witness Logies Hall of Fame recipient Noni Hazlehurst in the moving theatre production, Mother, for one performance only at Sunshine Coast Council’s Lake Kawana Community Centre in October. Noni Hazlehurst is giving 15 actors a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hone their skills by registering for a one-hour drama workshop that will take place on Monday, October 24 at 3.30pm. The actor will share her concept of the role and responsibilities of actors,

SCHOOL HOLIDAY FUN GUIDE

IT’S ALL FUN AND GAMES

There’s so much for kids to do on the Sunshine Coast these school holidays, from live shows and circus performances, to family-friendly fun parks, eco-entertainment, coding workshops and a ton of crafty fun. TOP SHOTS A day at Top Shots goes a little like this: climb it, play it, splash it and hit it. Top Shots Maroochydore is the only fun park on the Sunshine Coast with two 18-hole mini golf courses. The courses are set among beautiful scenery winding around gardens, waterfalls and a picturesque pool. There are plenty of other things to do at Top Shots. Bump the boats in the huge lagoon pool, spray your mates with the water sprayers and get wet under the waterfall. Sliding down two speed lanes on the inflatable Blue Crush Waterslide is a thrill, or hop inside the inflatable dome of the Cannonball and blast each other with foam balls from six metres away. Jump, bounce and spin higher than ever on the extreme vertical trampoline. Or for the more adventurous, climb with your mates and get to the buzzer on top of the rockwall. The park has dozens of coin operated arcade games and skill testers, catering options, and an onsite fast food cafe to satisfy your hunger. BYO food is allowed and there is free entry for spectators. 2 Allora Drive Maroochydore. Phone 5452 7007 or visit topshotsfunpark.com.au.

Independence Day: Resurgence is set to be bigger and better than the 1996 prequel. Starring Australia’s own Liam Hemsworth, this is a must-see feature on the big screen. Visitors will experience the thrill of flying into some of the most exotic destinations on the planet without even leaving the ground. Anything is possible while you sit in the comfort of the full-size 737 simulator located right in the heart of Mooloolaba. SUNSHINE COAST LIBRARIES With everything from Finding Dory scavenger hunts to Pyjama Storytime, there is something to entertain children of all ages during the winter school break at Sunshine Coast Council’s library branches. Councillor Jenny McKay says the council’s libraries have been busy creating another fun-filled school holiday program to stimulate children’s creative minds. “There is Minecraft animation where children will be tasked to create

their own stop-go animation movie and LEGO builds where they can practice their master builder skills,’’ she says. “Children can learn how to write their own creepy, spine-tingling story at the writer’s workshop and get tips and tricks from local author Aleesah Darlison. “We also have performances by Red Rocket 3, a crazy high-energy live band for kids which will be performing at a number of libraries for children big and small to join in. “Or if coding is your thing, there will

Play one of the two 18-hole mini golf courses at Top Shots

be three easy how-to sessions for children aged seven or over.” Children can take their pick from learning how to master Ozobots or learning to create their own online games using Scratch or Kodu programs. Perfect for rainy days. For bookings and to view the full range of holiday activities, visit library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or phone 5475 8989.

he all-new R8 Coupe has arrived in Australia. The new vehicle is leaner, more technically sophisticated and visually more angular. Audi Australia managing director Andrew Doyle says the first R8 was a landmark vehicle for the brand. “It put Audi sport performance firmly on the map in the luxury supercar segment. “The all-new second generation Audi R8 pushes the boundaries of what is possible for a modern supercar, while its sharper design hints at the progress that has been made beneath the skin. The new R8 is faster than its predecessor and boasts technology that rightly positions the Audi Sport brand as an innovator, even among its highly desirable competition. “This second-generation R8 has lost none of the versatility that helped make it so popular in the first place. It’s just as comfortable and pleasurable to drive as an everyday mode of transport on urban roads as it is on hallowed racetracks around the world, or driven along some of our finest touring routes.’’ The new engine develops

397kW/540Nm in the R8 V10 and 449kW/560Nm in the V10 plus. Capable of reaching 100km/hr from rest in just 3.2 seconds, before a top speed of 330km/hr, the new R8 V10 plus is the fastest production Audi ever built. Fuel efficiency is a highlight. The new cylinder-on-demand system can shut

down an entire bank of five cylinders under light throttle load, while the start-stop system is new to the Audi V10 engine. Among other efficiency technologies, these contribute to fuel consumption figures of 11.4 and 12.3 litres per 100km, for the V10 and V10 plus respectively.

Nissan Motor Co is researching and developing a solid oxide fuel-cell (SOFC) powered system that runs on bioethanol electric power. The new system – a world first for automotive use – features an e-Bio Fuel-Cell with an SOFC power generator. SOFC is a fuel cell utilising the reaction of multiple fuels, including ethanol and natural gas, with oxygen to produce electricity with high efficiency. The e-Bio Fuel Cell generates electricity through the SOFC using bio-ethanol stored in the vehicle. Unlike conventional systems, e-bio fuel cell features SOFC as its power source, affording greater power efficiency to give the vehicle cruising ranges similar to petrolpowered cars.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So the Fiji Pro is finished and the floggings were severe. Quite big in the end. But what followed was a massive pulse with Mr Slater scoring an absolute monster. Seriously this thing was huge. Check his Instragram account, guaranteed to blow your mind! Then imagine if that thing broke on your head? I think a near death experience would have surely followed if not death itself. Crazy stuff. Next stop J Bay and Shark Alley. Mr Fanning and Mr Wilson deserve to make it to the final again, how cool would that be? Now, Saturday as it stands looking good but some strong SW winds with it so no stand up paddle boarding me thinks, short boards it will be!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead are keen to take lures, plastics and live bait on the drift past almost any sand bank and drop off from Bli Bli to the Maroochy Bar. Bream are taking mullet and fowl gut in the deep channel edge off Goat Island. Luderick, although timid, are moving along rocks weeded with cabbage. Just look for the weed. SURF: Tailor are here tonight and gone tomorrow as they move north. Baby blue pilchards and lures are both working in the deeper gutters by day and WA pillies are returning the better quality on the right rising tide with Pincushion and Alex Headland the best. Sea bream are taking gar fillet off Coolum Rocks. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the close-in reefs are working well for trag jew, pearl perch and snapper with berleying returning quality fish at dawn and dusk in places that most anglers are cruising over on their way to the wider reefs. My latest trip to the Banks returned mixed reef fish and plenty of them, with undersized fish returned to the water. FRESHWATER: Winter bass are working bait from 10am to 3pm. Lake Baroon has bass feeding a thermocline just off the bank in about six metres depth. Lake Macdonald is one impoundment working the gaps in between the weed line with spinner baits and plastics working the best.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] Over the last two months, have you felt as if you’ve been walking through treacle, treading water … or even going backwards? Or has a major project backfired? Thank goodness your ruler Mars finally moves forwards and you’ll start to feel more positive.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] The pace picks up from Thursday onwards, when the planets stimulate your communication and relationship zones. So the latter part of the week is the time to socialise with family and friends as you participate in some stimulating conversations.

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Attached twins – are you taking your relationship responsibilities seriously? Saturn demands that you shape up or ship out. Some twins will tentatively revisit an old romance – but do you really want to do that dance again? Mercury shifts into your cash zone from June 30 until July 14.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Are you running on empty? From Monday until Wednesday, strive to get the ratio right between being on top of things at work, while still having time to recharge your batteries. Balance is the key. The momentum picks up from Thursday onwards.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] A relationship with a family member is about to improve, as Mars finally zooms forwards in your domestic zone. On the weekend, don your detective cap as you dig up a mystery, uncover a secret or research a topic that has always fascinated you.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Progress has been slow (particularly at school, college, work or online) but that will change when Mars moves forwards. There’s no substitute for being thoroughly prepared so make sure you are ready to pounce, from Thursday onwards.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Mars finally moves forwards in your money zone, but don’t spoil your future prospects by being rash with cash. Slow down and think (carefully) before you make an expensive purchase. Expect a fortuitous opportunity to appear out of the blue around Friday.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] Motivation planet Mars finally stops reversing through your sign. So Thursday onwards is the time to stop sulking and start being proactive. Getting a complicated personal problem sorted out is a good place to start. Friday’s stars boost your magnetism.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Saturn is reversing through your sign, which can make you feel as if you have the worries of the world on your shoulders. This week, take a step back and view your life from a more positive perspective. And Mars moves forwards in your volunteer zone.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Most communication problems arise from a lack of meaningful connection. As the week progresses, the planets encourage you to talk through issues with a loved one. Then you’ll see the current situation from a much more balanced perspective.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Have you been treading water at work? Action-planet Mars finally moves forwards in your career zone so professional and business opportunities are set to improve. And dealing with male colleagues and clients in a dynamic way will lead to positive outcomes.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Your creativity and intuition are firing this week. If your inner voice tells you something (or someone) isn’t the real deal, then make sure you act on that information. Mars moves forwards which increases your motivation and activates your adventurous side.

HEARING LOSS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED... The world’s first and only 100% invisible, 24/7 wearable, sweatproof, shower-proof, for-months-at-a-time hearing device. At EARS we are pioneers of the latest hearing technology. We are currently offering free of charge trials of the Phonak Lyric hearing aid. As the only hearing practice on the Sunshine Coast accredited and experienced in fitting this revolutionary product, we are now looking for volunteers with a hearing loss to come and try this breakthrough completely invisible, natural sounding technology with us. The trial is completely free of charge and without obligation and you will be helping us to learn and study this unique proposition in our local community. THE LAST WORD

ET PHONE HOME As a teenager, Richard O’Leary argued with his dad about aliens. Now science has forced him to eat his words.

D

ear Dad, I was wrong… about the aliens at least. In my teens, I remember staring up at the stars from our backyard and arguing with my father about the existence or otherwise of intelligent life somewhere else in the universe. He thought there had to be aliens. I disagreed – strongly. If I remember correctly, I put forward a case based on mathematical probability. The odds of a planet like Earth existing were astronomical and therefore the chances of there being a repeat were just too slim too contemplate. Not that I was particularly great at maths and I never even attempted physics – but they are minor deficiencies when armed with the cocksureness of youth. My conviction about aliens, like many of the things I was so certain about in my teenage years, has slowly eroded

over the decades, and a recent scientific discovery has washed away the last of my resolve on the issue. Astronomers from the Kepler spacecraft team have found 1,284 new planets, all orbiting stars outside our solar system. The total number of such ‘exoplanets’ now stands at more than 3,000. This knowledge, combined with other discoveries over the past decade, has led scientists to conclude every star in the sky probably hosts at least one planet. “But that doesn’t mean there are aliens on those planets”, I hear you say. I’ll let Adam Frank answer that question – he’s an astrophysics professor at the University of Rochester, who has published a recent paper on the issue in the journal Astrobiology. “While we do not know if any advanced extraterrestrial civilisations currently exist in our galaxy, we now have enough information to conclude that

they almost certainly existed at some point in cosmic history.” So not only is alien life probable, in all likelihood it’s already come and gone on a number of occasions. Just pause for a second to think about the ramifications of that statement – it poses huge questions on any number of levels. For philosophers and theologians, it must be manna from heaven. Tonight I’m going to ring my dad and tell him the good news. I’ll take my time – it’s going to be quite a shock. Not finding out about the aliens; he knew that all along. I’m talking about his son admitting he was wrong when he was a teenager. Then I will go and sit outside and stare up at all those stars and planets with a big smile on my face – to look friendly just in case someone is watching. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
