FROM THE EDITOR
M
WP columnist Sami Muirhead’s column struck an emotional chord with me this week. It is one of those stories that will pull on the heartstrings of anyone who takes the time to read the piece. Sami shares the story of five-year-old Zahlia who is dying from the rare Aicardi syndrome. Zahlia’s mum Sally has one simple wish – to spend the final years with her daughter at home in the safety of her own beautiful backyard. I can’t help but think of my own little boy who loves heading outside to water the garden with his watering pail, who loves to explore the garden in the shade of the trees, or of my own childhood where the backyard was a safe and comforting place to just be yourself. A green space can certainly be a haven for a child, and it seems like a fair wish for Sally and Zahlia. The good news is that we can make this happen. The owner of iLandscape, Jason Kay, has volunteered his time to draw up the specialised landscape plans and is now hoping people will jump on board to bring this dream alive. To find out how you can help, be sure to read Sami’s column on page 24. In our cover story this week we take a trip down memory lane into the school yard, and in particular, the canteen – or tuckshop as it has always been called in my world. From cream buns to kombucha, we explore the evolution of canteen menus and find out what’s working and what’s not. Enjoy!

QUICK CHAT
WISE WORDS Where do you live? I live in a Queenslander on an acre in a quiet corner of the hinterland. I’ve lived in the Maleny area for over 11 years. First job? A paperboy at the age of 12. I spent a couple of evenings a week pedalling around my suburb in Sydney’s west, tossing papers onto driveways from the milk crate strapped to my handlebars. What are you currently working on? Two things: getting the word out there about my latest novel The Apology. I’m also working on a novel manuscript called Baited Breath, about greyhound live baiting practices, as well as a broader range of relationships with dogs – as companions, dependents, and as victims of human self-centredness and apathy. Your family includes? My wife and two sons, dogs Tilly and Tucker, and a ginger cat named Skippyjon Jones. First car? A bottle-green 1974 Mitsubishi Lancer, who lived out her last days beneath a tarpaulin in the front yard of a rental house. Poor thing.
What are you reading now? When I’m working on a novel I try not to become too involved in someone else’s work, and instead pick up novels I’ve previously read and revisit the good bits as inspiration.
Ross Watkins BIO
Ross Watkins is an author and illustrator. His first novel for adults, The Apology (UQP), was published this year to rave reviews. His picture book One Photo was shortlisted for the 2017 Children’s Book Council of Australia Picture Book of the Year, and The Boy Who Grew Into a Tree, which he illustrated, was shortlisted for the 2013 Aurealis Award. Mr Watkins teaches creative writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast.
If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Move the beach closer to Maleny. Best day in your life and why? The two occasions I held my newborn sons in my arms for the first time. Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? The day my Year 7 English teacher accused me of plagiarism because the story was apparently so good she thought I must have stolen it. I wrote many stories after that. Your greatest regret? Nothing. Even mistakes appear inevitable in retrospect.
“My dad told me at 14 that life is a competition and my effort would determine the outcome”
Favourite book? That’s way too difficult.
author
What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? My home on the hill.
What achievement are you most proud of? My novel The Apology. I set myself a task, I went about it with passion and discipline, and the result can be purchased from a bookstore near you. You are happiest when? I’m gardening on a warm day, or rocking in the swell at the beach. What frustrates you the most? People who say ignorant, intolerant things.
How do you deal with your frustrations? I pat a dog. Preferably a golden retriever.
Favourite song and why? Tom Waits’ Kentucky Avenue. Just listen and you’ll know why.
If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? I’d invite Mum to share one more meal with my grandmother, who died suddenly when I was 14. We never got to say goodbye properly.
What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? Ozark, a series starring the never-ageing Jason Bateman. Compelling, tense viewing with great character depth.
If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I’d spend a little on flippant wants, a few gifts for people I love, but for the majority of the sum I’d do the boring thing and invest.
When was the last time you played sport and what was it? If casual running is sport, then I try to do it regularly.
Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Mostly tea with milk, but I sneak in the occasional cappuccino.
Best advice you’ve been given? My dad told me at 14 that life is a competition and my effort would determine the outcome. I hated the advice then and I hate it now, but that doesn’t make it untrue. I went on to become dux the following year.
NRL or AFL? NRL. I grew up on a football field because my family basically ran the local rugby league club.

THE EVOLUTION OF THE SCHOOL CANTEEN
“Gone are the days when school canteens could get by with willing parents handing out fast food, sandwiches and confectionery”
School children taking free milk in 1965
P
ies, sausage rolls, cream buns, red frogs, devon sandwiches on white bread (with tomato sauce of course), lamingtons, freckles, Cobbers, finger buns with candy-pink icing, Space Food Sticks, Red Skins… When you think about what school canteens served kids in days gone by, this is just the tip of the sugary iceberg. It seems a cruel irony that back when you could eat your own weight in sugar from the canteen and no one would bat an eyelid, children were a lot leaner than they are today. While school canteens are not the prime cause of today’s childhood obesity problem, they do play their part and with a quarter of Australian children now overweight or obese, school canteens have been forced to evolve. Despite providing only a fraction of the food children eat overall – around seven per cent according to David Edwards, CEO of the Australian School Canteens Association (ASCA) – the school tuckshop provides an opportunity to educate children about healthy eating. The push towards healthier canteens intensified when the Australian Government funded the National Healthy School Canteens (NHSC) project as part of the Australian Better Health Initiative. Commencing in 2008, the project has developed national guidelines to help

canteen managers make healthier food and drink choices for schools: foods in the green category are safe to have on the menu at all times, foods in the amber category should be selected carefully, and foods in the red zone are not recommended for canteens. For its part, Queensland introduced Smart Choices – Healthy Food and Drink Supply Strategy for Queensland Schools, which is all about offering healthy food and drink to students in the state’s schools, ensuring profit is not put before children’s health.
invest a great deal of thought and planning into their canteen menus. Sunshine Beach State High School made national headlines in July for being the first school in Australia to stock kombucha in its school canteen. A gut-friendly fermented drink, the school’s canteen manager Jodie Slater introduced a sugar-free brand of kombucha to the school, along with meals like sweet potato fritters with Moroccan couscous and homemade salsa. The school sells almost 100 cans of kombucha a month and while other schools are struggling to
“Our children only used to use the canteen once a month or once a week. Now we hear of children using the canteen every day” Caroline Martin
So, goodbye soft drinks, donuts and hot chips, and hello kombucha, chick peas and brisket burgers. This massive overhaul has been beneficial for students, but a difficult transition for schools. Many are struggling to survive as compliance demands increase and volunteer numbers decrease. The schools managing the transition well must
remain profitable and keep within government guidelines, Sunshine Beach High is showing how it’s done. But Ms Slater is a former restaurant owner who is studying nutrition and dietetics with a focus on healthy eating for children, and few schools have this expertise at hand. Gone are the days when school

canteens could get by with willing parents handing out fast food, sandwiches and confectionery. They’re having to become innovative in a bid to remain profitable, with many schools now introducing barista-made coffee for parents and high school students. “Years ago, there were no overheads, not a lot of cooking, not a need for a lot of equipment to cook fresh food,” Mr Edwards says. “They’d buy processed food, snacks or sandwiches and use a lot of volunteers.” Mr Edwards says over the past 20 years, school canteens have been gradually losing volunteers and need to employ staff. “These days volunteers are very hard to get. Some of the better resourced private schools might have them, but other private schools outsource to catering companies. Public schools don’t get volunteers so they’re having to pay staff. “Public schools can’t run their canteens at a loss, but it’s becoming very difficult There are some fabulous examples of school canteens making a profit, but they’re the exception, not the rule. The government has been very focused on these guidelines but haven’t equipped the schools. If you don’t have an oven and only have a pie warmer, it’s very hard to make fresh food.” Consequently, schools have turned to outsourcing. However, without parents popping in to see their children and help myweeklypreview.com.au

out in the canteen, the homely old school canteen culture is being lost. “In Sydney, 60 per cent of school canteens would now be outsourced to catering companies,” he says. “It’s a bit less in Victoria – about 30 per cent. “Queensland and the Sunshine Coast haven’t really started outsourcing their canteens to catering firms, but it’s a trend I see continuing. When a catering firm is running it, it doesn’t involve the school community and there’s less ownership. On the other hand, principals are employed to educate the kids and these canteens are becoming harder to make viable.” The ASCA produced a cookbook, Food for Thought, in May 2017. It’s designed for schools, with recipes for creating healthy food in bulk quantities, with a catering section to help increase profits. Liza Hammond, the ASCA area manager for the Sunshine Coast, was heavily involved in the production of the book. “One of the major challenges I don’t think people are aware of is that the canteen is only open for two meals a day and the expectation is that it’s supposed to be really healthy,” says Ms Hammond. “There’s that pressure to make a lot of the food themselves, but they don’t have the volunteers. They’re feeding large numbers at once. A cafe might serve 10 to 15 people at a time. At a school, they’re expected at 11 o’clock to feed 400 people. It’s a big task,
1970s
1980s
to maintain variety and keep it cost effective. “Some schools do a fabulous job and they work hard at it. If you ask most canteen managers, they would be working at least five or six hours a week over and above what they’re getting paid for. It’s a hard gig.”
SCHOOL CANTEENS VS UBER EATS The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Caroline Martin is a dietician who has worked in the public health domain for more than 20 years and gave advice to canteens in South Australia from the mid-1990s to 2003, before she moved to the Sunshine Coast. She says with many families having two parents working, the number of children taking a packed lunch to school each day has decreased, which adds more pressure to school canteens to up their game. “Our children only used to use the canteen once a month or once a week,” she says. “Now we hear of children using the canteen every day. There’s an increased reliance on the school tuckshop and with the introduction of Smart Choices, it may lead them to rely on the tuckshop as the main source of food. If the school tuckshop is actually adhering to the Smart Choice guidelines, I don’t see a problem, but we still have a lot of work to do in monitoring schools and supporting schools to actually
1990s
achieve those guidelines. “It’s not easy – from a nutritionist’s point of view, it would take me a long time to go through the resources and understand how I would use them, look at a canteen menu and make changes. A lot of tuckshop managers don’t have that background or training. “A lot of schools are making a big effort to implement Smart Choices but are finding it’s limiting their menu. High school students are not purchasing because they don’t see anything they might like.” Ms Hammond says high school students won’t settle for eating food they don’t enjoy when they have a multitude of takeaway options at the fingertips – literally. “High school kids are ordering Uber Eats,” she says. “At one school in Brisbane, the school had to stop them buying Domino’s. The parents would book it and the kids would wait at the gate for it to be delivered.” “I’ve heard about Uber Eats being delivered to schools on the Sunshine Coast,” says Ms Martin. “I don’t necessarily think that’s a good thing – it presents security concerns. It’s obviously not going to be subject to any kind of Smart Choices implementation either. It’s not something that should be a long-term strategy. “I think we have to be innovative. There is a need for schools to try things and get input from the school community. “When I was in South Australia, we recommended that schools always consult
2000s
2010s
the school community widely. “Get the students involved in the menu development – that way, there’s ownership and any changes will be accepted.”
SCHOOL MILK SCHEME TURNED SOUR Anyone who went to school from the 1950s to 1970s will have vivid memories of being made to drink milk every day at school. In 1950, the Menzies government introduced the national free milk scheme in a bid to improve the health of Australian children, but it inadvertently put generations of Australians off drinking milk. Every morning, crates of milk, first in quarter-pint bottles, then in triangular cardboard packs, would be delivered to school playgrounds. They were left to sit in the sun until lunchtime, when the milk would be warm and curdled, with big globs of cream floating on the top. There were no excuses – everyone had to drink it. The scheme was ended in 1973 by the Whitlam government, when it was discovered it had a marginal, if any, effect on the health of children.

each volleyball champion Mariafe Artacho del Solar says the best thing her mother ever did for her was move from her home country of Peru to Australia when she was 11 years old. Born in Lima, Ms Artacho del Solar’s older sister played indoor volleyball for Peru and she followed in her sister’s footsteps, taking up the sport at six years old and showing early potential. “I really only cared about sports and I was so excited when Mum told me we were moving to Australia,” she says. “It’s the best decision Mum ever made. I adapted so easily, even though I couldn’t speak a word of English when I came. It took six months to a year to be able to have a conversation, but volleyball was a great way for me to meet people and get to know people. I loved it. “Mum wanted a change of lifestyle [and] there were way better opportunities for me for sport here. The support they give the athletes here is second to none. I used to play indoor as well as beach volleyball, but when I was 13 I realised beach volleyball was what I wanted to do.” Ms Artacho del Solar was selected to play for Australia in the under 19s team when she was only 13 and at the age of 18, won a full-time scholarship to move to Adelaide with the Australian Institute of Sport program. “Moving away from everything and living on my own wasn’t easy,” she says. “I didn’t have Mum next to me, I didn’t come home from training to Mum’s cooked meal. I had to completely look after myself. You just learn so much about yourself, you mature so much and become an adult.” Both moves have paid off. Along with her beach volleyball partner Taliqua Clancy, she’s ranked 12th in the FIVB Beach Volleyball Rankings. She made her Olympic debut in Rio and won silver at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. “Rio was an awesome experience,” she says. “It was a massive learning curve. I got to see the best of the best and what it takes to be on the top of the podium. It was more of a motivating experience than anything. I learnt so much. “The Commonwealth Games was really amazing,” she adds. “It was more special for us because it was at home, in Australia. Obviously we were going for gold, but we were still
Mariafe Artacho del Solar with Taliqua Clancy proud of our silver. We [played] Canada, who were the number one ranked team in the world, so we always knew we’d have a tough game. We fell short, but it was still an amazing moment.” Victory came in late September when she won the Asian Beach Volleyball Championships. “Taliqua and I just finished our international season last week,” she says. “It was really exciting to finish our season with a win. It was a big win for us because it was the first qualification event for the Tokyo Olympics.” September was a big month for another reason – her boyfriend Jack Curtin proposed to her in Hawaii. They met in 2016. Ms Artacho del Solar is an influencer for Chobani yoghurt and Mr Curtin was working as the South Australian manager and one day, came knocking on her door. “As soon as I opened the door that Friday when he came to deliver it, I knew it,” she says. “I felt it so strong that I was going to be more involved with him. He pushes me out of my comfort f zone constantly and together we learn and grow a lot, as he’s also got a lot of knowledge about being an elite athlete.” They plan to marry after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, but for now, her mind is firmly on her sport. Until June next year, every official tournament will count towards Olympics qualification. She travels most of the year to play and her training regime is rigorous, with a nine-to-five schedule of gym and sand training, five to six days a week. “The pinnacle for all athletes is to win an Olympic medal and to win gold would be amazing,” she says. “Touch wood, as long as I keep strong and fit, I want to play until my mid-thirties and just be the best version of myself. TRAMS BOUND FOR NAMBOUR Nambour Tram Co has been successful in its bid to receive two of the 134 restored and retired Victorian trams despite coming up against 1500 applications from around the country. The trams will be stationed at either end of town with one being repurposed as a ticketing office for when the Nambour tram gets up and running and the other being used as a picnic area for locals and tourists to enjoy. The trams can no longer operate on the historic rails, but the Nambour Tram Co board is in talks with the council and local rail engineers to find a solution to get a tram operating through the main streets of the town in the future.
Sunshine Coast Council’s vision to deliver a world-class centre for Caloundra is moving forward. The council is proposing a planning scheme amendment to help implement the adopted Caloundra Centre Master Plan, which supports the community’s goals for the area. Caloundra has an estimated population of 88,000 and Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer says community consultation on the proposed planning scheme amendment is now underway. Residents and the wider Coast community can have their say until November 9. Visit haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/caloundra-centre-master-plan.

With settlement on October 12, the project has officially begun.
Following its $100-million purchase of the Novotel Twin Waters Resort in Queensland last month, the Shakespeare Property Group has announced a new, purpose-built convention centre for the Sunshine Coast. The $8 million Convention Centre will be the destination’s pre-eminent event venue when it opens to local, interstate and international visitors in April 2019. Shakespeare Property Group is planning to invest a total of $10 million in upgrades to the resort and Convention Centre at Novotel Twin Waters Resort over the next couple of years. The new-build centre, located within the resort, will offer a choice of four different dynamic meeting and event spaces and will cater for 2000 delegates theatre style, or 1000 banquet style.

MAKING THE CONNECTION The undersea cable that will link the Sunshine Coast directly with the rest of the world will be sending and receiving by 2020.
T
he much-anticipated submarine cable has been approved and will be operational by 2020. The 550-kilometre cable will connect the Sunshine Coast to the 9600-kilometre Japan-Guam-Australia-South submarine cable and provide the fastest data and telecommunications transmission speed from Australia to Asia. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the data transmission speed from the Sunshine Coast will be at least 10 milliseconds faster to all of these locations than from Sydney. It will also be at least 20 milliseconds faster than on the Indigo cable that will run from Singapore to Perth and Sydney. “These speed differences may not seem like much, but they are important for a range of businesses and industry in the banking, finance, film production and applications development sectors, as well as for those businesses that operate on a high volume [of] online transactions,” he says. “It will offer greater redundancy and diversity for Queensland and Australia as all eastern seaboard data will not have to go out through Sydney, opening up improved economic opportunities for SEQ and the rest of Queensland.” Three main contractors will be involved in the delivery of the submarine network – Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), RTI and the Sunshine Coast Council. ASN will provide the submarine network, which will include the marine route survey and the design, manufacture and laying of the submarine cable. It will also supply, install and commission equipment in the cable landing station. RTI will project manage the delivery of the trunk cable from Guam to Sydney, and the branch cable that will connect to the Sunshine Coast. RTI will also take the lead in negotiating sales of capacity on the network. The council will take the lead on the land-side infrastructure associated with the network, including the cable landing point
Sunshine Coast mayor Mark Jamieson says the cable will create new opportunities where the cable will come ashore, the cable landing station where the cable will join the terrestrial network and the connection between these two points. The council is also actively promoting the investment opportunities available on the Sunshine Coast
“Other local businesses are now quantifying how they will leverage this new asset” associated with the benefits of the submarine cable both domestically and internationally. Cr Jamieson says one of the early targets will be securing investment in a data centre to be located near the cable landing station. “The most immediate task is the construction of a cable landing station in Maud Street, Maroochydore,” he says, adding that tenders have been called for its construction. Cr Jamieson says this station is likely to be
the only new branch to be built in Australian in the next seven to 10 years as the process takes between eight and 10 years from planning to installation. “The second key milestone that needs to be achieved by the end of 2018 is the marine route survey. Council has previously received a desktop survey of the proposed cable route and the next key step is the completion of a physical marine route survey,” he says. “The survey will capture detailed information relating to the sea bed, which will help to determine the final cable route.” Before the cable can be physically laid, there are a number of permits that need to be obtained from both the Queensland and Australian governments and work has commenced on preparing information and applications for those permits. “Once manufactured, the submarine cable will be laid by ASN using specially designed ships that carry the submarine cable on board and lay it out on the seabed,” Cr Jamieson says. “Depending on the specific ship, there will be several thousand kilometres of fibre laid from a ship at any one time. For such a high-tech project, one of the most
interesting aspects is that the cable is loaded on the ship by hand. “The loading of the cable is likely to take several weeks to complete. In shallow waters the cable will be buried to avoid being damaged by ships anchors and other potential hazards.” While the benefits for the business community have been highly publicised, with the cable providing a magnet for companies of all sizes looking to capitalise on increased speeds and connectivity, Cr Jamieson says there will also be plenty of employment opportunities that will flow on from that. “These jobs will be for those already in the workforce but more importantly, the project will open up career opportunities for current and future generations on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “The founder of Youi calls it the ‘tipping point’ and says this announcement confirms their strong belief in the region and their original decision to establish their global headquarters here. “Other local businesses are now quantifying how they will leverage this new asset, the new products and services they can now offer, the increased competitiveness for their business and the future savings for their business.”
BY THE NUMBERS Around 550 kilometres of undersea cable will be laid. This will connect the Sunshine Coast to the 9600-kilometre Japan-Guam-AustraliaSouth submarine cable. The cable will be operational by 2020. Independent modelling forecasts it will create up to 864 new jobs and up to $927 million in new investment. The investment of up to $35 million in the undersea cable connection plus supporting land-based infrastructure is being jointly funded by the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government.

o shopping experience compares with setting foot inside a sophisticated boutique and having access to a knowledgeable salesperson who knows every garment in store inside and out. That is what shoppers get when they head to the Buderim shopping strip and it’s something Sedgwick’s owner Nikki Miller prides herself on. The former Melbourne

fashion agent set up the women’s boutique in August 2016 and has become renowned for actively seeking out unique Australian designers to feature in her store. Fashionistas will get a chance to see some of the latest designs on offer as Sedgwick’s and Gingers Boutique join with
My Weekly Preview for the latest My Style fashion parade and fundraiser luncheon, which will be held at the Buderim Tavern on October 26. Ms Miller says the featured boutiques are firm believers in slow fashion – clothes that don’t conform to what’s on trend, but rather focus on quality and sophistication, which means you can wear them for decades. “I love great fabrics and I go down to Melbourne and Sydney before I order any of the garments from the designer to feel the fabrics and see the quality for myself before I order anything,” Ms Miller says. “I also don’t order a lot of anything, so those who come here and find something they love will have less chance of running into themselves when to go to a function.” Ms Miller says the beauty of taking time to discover the treasures in your local boutique mean you might happen upon an item that will become a firm favourite. “I love it when people come in with an open mind,” she says. “I love it when someone says something is not their style but they take my recommendation if I know there is something they might not usually consider their colour or design and they try
it on anyway. I am over the moon when they see themselves in it and they just look comfortable and instantly love it. “A lot of my customers don’t follow the trends. They know if they feel and look great in something, it will give them more confidence and they will love it forever. Of course, that doesn’t mean we don’t also love having unique non-traditional pieces and we will be showcasing some of these at the fashion parade. People will gasp when they see this gorgeous dress from Nicolangela that I want to showcase.” Don’t miss your chance to be part of the fun and secure your tickets to the event, which features a two-course lunch at the Buderim Tavern, a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and the fashion parade. There will also be a raffle to raise funds for SunnyKids, which provides thousands of nights of emergency accommodation, as well as domestic violence and referral counselling, and partners with health, education and child protection agencies to keep kids safe.
Tickets are $79 and are available through myweeklypreview.com.au.

MY OPINION
LET’S HELP SALLY & ZAHLIA
DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION
Sami Muirhead is urging the community to dig deep and help build a backyard for a single mother and her terminally ill daughter.
Richard O’Leary says a study has found only one in 20 people concentrate only on the task at hand while driving.
I
have been losing sleep over a little girl and her single mum who live at Mooloolah Valley. Sally and Zahlia. They are incredible and their story is not fair and I hope we can right some wrongs. Five-year-old Zahlia is dying from Aicardi syndrome, which affects the brain. All her mum wants is a backyard where her little girl can play safely and privately near a canopy of native trees. They want to spend their final years together in nature feeling the cool breeze and perhaps even splashing in a water feature or little pool. It sounds to me a very reasonable wish for any child in Australia. It sounds urgent for any dying child. Currently their backyard is full of dirt and rocks and dust and snakes. Sally lost her entire superannuation to a dishonest tradesman and can’t afford to landscape her garden. “Honestly, it’s huge,” Sally says, when asked what the yard would mean to them. “It’s so much more than a backyard to us. The physical side of getting Zahlia out and about is just the start of the mission. Then there’s the emotional side for me. On limited sleep, [due to constant nocturnal seizure activity] dealing with the judgmental looks, pointing and commenting on Zahlia’s socially unacceptable gleeful screaming really weakens me. I understand it’s a lack of education that makes people behave the way they do but in saying that, it doesn’t mean it hurts any less. Having a backyard
with all the things she finds entertaining means she can be at home in a completely hazard-free area and she can scream as much as she likes and I can enjoy that with her. It’ll be blissful,” she says. Jason Kay owns a company called iLandscape and has helped draw up plans. He has worked for free on the design but needs suppliers to donate goods and locals to donate expertise and manpower. Jason says, “We have to design the space correctly, as there are certain things like pebbles and sand that Zahlia eats (due to her brain damage), so we can’t use those materials. The determination that Sally shows is amazing, her drive as a single mother raising her lovely Zahlia and supporting her through countless seizures in what can only be viewed as terrifying through Sally’s eyes. To feel helpless to help her daughter get through the seizures and only be there to cuddle her must be so hard. Yet time and time again, Sally bounces out of bed with minimal sleep to repeat the process. Sal is always there for others and even finds time to volunteer the spare amount of time she has.” So let’s make this happen. This little girl deserves a backyard. So does her mum. A working bee will be held on October 27. If you can help donate goods, please contact Todd Widdicombe and myself at Mix FM radio at toddandsami@mixfm.com.au. Donations are tax deductible and you can contact me any time to find out more.
M
y best friend died when he was 19 years old. He veered a fraction over the wrong side of a country road and his car collided with a truck. His split-second loss of concentration cut short a life destined for all the good things a young man can hope for – a rewarding job, family and friends, happiness. He wasn’t the only one who had something stolen – those who loved him were robbed of a son, a brother, a cousin, a comrade. I’ve talked about Mark before in this magazine, but I thought I should mention him again following the disturbing findings of one of the most comprehensive studies undertaken on driver distraction. The Australian Naturalistic Driving Study put sensors and cameras in the cars of about 400 drivers to monitor close to 200,000 journeys over nearly two million kilometres. Do you know what they found? Only one in 20 people concentrate just on driving while in the car – the rest of us, and I say us because I’m definitely a sinner not a saint behind the wheel – find plenty of other things to do despite the danger. If you are reading this while driving, please put the magazine down (it’s not out of the realms of possibility according to the study), for the rest of you take a look at these disturbing facts, on average: • Drivers are distracted 45 per cent of the time
Sami Muirhead is a radio announcer, blogger and commentator. For more from Sami tune into Mix FM.
Spring has sprung and it’s the perfect time to save with our Floors for Living Catalogue Sale! With great deals on carpet, timber, laminate, luxury vinyl, and rugs, you’re sure to find the floor you’ve been searching for.
• A driver is distracted every 96 seconds • Six per cent of driver distractions measured in this study caused near misses • Eight per cent of distractions are people reaching for their phones (increasing the chances of a crash by nine times) • 3.5 per cent of distractions are caused by texting (increasing the chances of a crash by six times). They are sobering statistics when you consider one in every six crashes is caused by distracted drivers. What the $5 million study doesn’t tell you is the heartbreak caused by these crashes; the haunted families, the broken communities, the friends who feel cheated of sharing special moments; marriages, births and milestone birthdays. I went off the rails for a while after my friend’s funeral, thinking if this can happen, what the hell is life about anyway? Even now, I can find a dozen things to distract me while driving, so I have to remind myself of the consequences of that inattention. It brings to mind what an old copper once told me when I was a young journalist: “A car can be more dangerous than a loaded gun – and a lot more people own them.” It all feeds into my theory that within a generation we won’t be allowed to drive on our roads. That will be left up to robots and AI, simply because no insurance company would take the risk to insure a human behind the wheel.
Richard O’Leary is a journalist, a political adviser and a father who knows there’s a deeper meaning to life, but struggles to find it.

he Banks Index looks set to record its fourth year in a row of underperformance against the broader market in 2018. Since the end of 2014, the Banks Index has returned just four per cent, including dividends, while the S&P/ASX 200 Index – even with the drag from the banks – has returned 35 per cent. Unsurprisingly, the sector’s 12-month forward P/E multiple has fallen to 11.6x, compared with 11.9x six months ago, and remains below its longer-term average of 12.3x. The sector’s P/E multiple has widened to a 24 per cent discount to the S&P/ASX 200, close to its historical extreme of a 28 per cent discount. Typically, it is rare to see discounts of more than 20 per cent for a prolonged period, which may argue
for a short-term bounce in the sector. Heading into bank results season in October/November, apart from valuations, the arguments for a short-term bounce could include the recent mortgage repricing undertaken by several banks to alleviate funding cost pressures, healthy capital levels, progress on asset sales and de-mergers, and a mini-break in Royal Commission hearings. However, we are not convinced about how sustainable the improvement in bank share prices will be. We still believe the banks need to overcome many challenges to their profitability, as well as sentiment headwinds: Royal Commission – There are several elements at play here: 1. The interim report did not deliver the clarity many had been hoping for. Instead, it appears we will have to wait until February 1, 2019 for the final report, adding to the period of uncertainty. 2. While the interim report questioned the need for additional layers of regulation, it did seem to lean towards finding a different way to enforce the existing regime, which could open the banks up to a stricter application of the law. 3. There is a risk the inquiry is extended with the government open to the idea if requested by the Commissioner. All in all, we expect there is still a risk of further costs from monetary penalties being
sought by the regulators, customer redress, and ongoing efforts to improve compliance and monitoring systems. Federal election – At this stage, we don’t see any major election promises that will favour the banks. Instead, the failings of the banks seem to be an easy target, especially with the Royal Commission findings due. Further, if Labor is successful with its policy proposals to scrap cash refunds for excess franking credits, reform negative gearing and reduce capital gains tax discounts, it will relatively disadvantage the banks. Depending on the details, the removal of franking credit rebates will affect the appeal of hybrid securities issued by the banks, and could raise the cost of funding from this source. Reforms to negative gearing and capital gains tax arguably could introduce some risk to property values and could also see credit growth slow further. Credit growth and house prices – Both have seen orderly adjustments to date, but we expect them to soften further, putting a drag on banking revenues. Oktoberfest is coming to the Sunshine Coast and everyone is invited to the inaugural regional event.
T
housands of people are preparing to don their finest dirndl or lederhosen for the inaugural Oktoberfest Sunshine Coast. The largest beer tent the region has ever seen will pop up this week before the October 20 event at the Kawana Sports Precinct. Covering a football field, the tent is the centrepiece of the festival, which event director Todd Forrest says will be as close to an authentic German experience as possible. “We are not selling pizzas or calamari, only traditional German foods and desserts and our wines and beer are all German, even the entertainers and what they are performing is all German,” he says. Mr Forrest is encouraging punters to dress up for the occasion, which will add further to the atmosphere. He says he wants to create the air of social connection you find in traditional beer gardens. “This is a place for people to catch up with friends and sit at
one of the 300 trestle tables. While seven million attended Oktoberfest in Germany this year, we are hoping for close to 6000.” Mr Forrest has ordered more than 200 kegs for the occasion, with more than 10,000 litres of beer ready for the sampling. There will be an interactive play area for the kids as well as plenty of competitions including the team Strongman event and the crowning of Mr and Mrs Oktoberfest with a total prize pool of more than $5000. Oktoberfest Sunshine Coast will run from 11am to 9pm at the Kawana Sports Precinct. Tickets are $39.90 and are available through oktoberfestsc. com.au. You can also buy tickets at the door for $49.90 on the day.
Buddies Refugee Support Group is screening The Merger as a community awareness event for National Unity Week. He recruits refugees to make up the numbers and ultimately changes the community. Tickets for the October 24 screening at the Majestic Cinemas in Nambour at 6pm are $12 and are available from majesticcinemas.com.au.

SHEPPARD JOIN UNDER THE SOUTHERN STARS LINE-UP The Under the Southern Stars summer festival will deliver music lovers the ultimate outdoor live music experience at the Sunshine Coast Stadium on January 20, 2019 with Brisbane’s very own Sheppard joining the best of Aussie rock line-up. All of this builds on the success that Amy, Emma, and George Sheppard had with their smash hit Geronimo from their 2014 album Bombs Away, which went platinum in 21 countries, including Top 40 in the US, and spent 44 weeks in the Australian ARIA chart including three weeks at number one. interesting concept. The group of stories share underlying themes that together create a panorama of human tragedy and survival from the start of white settlement. The characters are described through significant events in their lives and their relationship with the natural environment around them. The stories include mystery, relationships, bravery, fear, childhood innocence and much more, and range from that of the young sailor who explores with Lieutenant Flinders to that of a young woman recounting memories in the future when life as we now know it has ended. For me, this book was at times confronting, but also enjoyable and interesting. With stories set in both the past and the future, it gives us plenty to think about.

With the full moon illuminating your career zone, find creative ways to inspire others and shine more brightly at work. You’re feeling positive about a current challenge but sometimes there’s a fine line between being optimistic and being unrealistic.
Wednesday night’s full moon stimulates your adventure and study zones, so it’s a good time to plan a trip or learn something new. The planets are pushing you to travel and learn and grow, even when it is difficult.
Expect a week of extremes. Saturn helps to stabilise a rocky relationship but retrograde Venus will continue to cause problems until November 16. In the meantime, do your diplomatic best to find some mutually agreeable middle ground.
Venus is still reversing through your sign so a personal project or a close relationship could suddenly stall – or even go backwards! Don’t waste precious time worrying about it or expend too much energy trying to fix it.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)
CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20)
AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)
PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20)
You’re keen to be in charge but are you being the boss – or just bossy? This week the stars encourage you to utilise your leadership skills in more subtle, disciplined and diplomatic ways that result in cooperation rather than consternation!
Promising opportunities are all around you, and clever Capricorns will examine all possibilities in a realistic light. With Venus reversing through your hopes and wishes zone, it’s important to have a long-term goal that you’re working towards.
The full moon heralds a move, renovation, family fiasco, uninvited guest or some other domestic drama. And some could become entangled in a workplace misunderstanding. Strike a balance between your public life and your private responsibilities.
Are your aspirations for the future ambitious enough? The current planetary patterns favour ruminating over big-picture ideas. And there’s no room for false modesty or passive procrastination as you enjoy communicating.
WORD STEP Complete the list by changing one letter at a time to create a new word at each step. One possible answer shown below.

Someone could question your aspirations. So it’s time to ask yourself “Am I full of dreams but short on practical details?” Crabs are often emotional around the full moon but this one’s in earthy Taurus, so you’ll feel more emotionally grounded.

SUNSHINE COAST WELCOMES 500th HALCYON HOME
T
erry and Barbara Whimp’s decision to spend the next chapter of their lives at Halcyon Lakeside in Bli Bli has delivered Halcyon its 500th home on the Sunshine Coast. The couple have joined the hundreds of homeowners who are taking it on or taking it easy at Halcyon Parks in Caloundra, Halcyon Landing in Bli Bli and at Halcyon Lakeside. Back in 2004, Halcyon Parks broke the mould for over 50s living by showcasing ground-breaking design and masterplanning. Now in 2018, that DNA of Halcyon Parks runs through the veins of Halcyon Landing and Halcyon Lakeside. With their former home at Peregian Springs now just a memory, Terry, 65, and Barbara, 63, are diving into the lifestyle that Halcyon Lakeside has to offer. Mr Whimp says it’s not difficult to enjoy everything on

offer at Halcyon Lakeside, especially since the community’s spectacular Rec Club is just a 30-second walk from the doorstep of their new home. “We saw that most people here are our age, have the same mindset and they are looking to stay healthy – that really appealed to us. I’m most looking forward to learning new things like lawn bowls and pickleball,” he says. Mrs Whimp is keen to start aqua aerobics and to immerse herself in Halcyon Lakeside’s strong arts and crafts groups. “We retired a bit early, so we like to keep active and what interested me about Halcyon Lakeside was that there’s plenty to do without having to go into the wider community to find it,” she says. Mr and Mrs Whimp were in their previous home for 15 years when they decided their yard was just too big to manage. “It really was a maintenance issue, we were looking for something that had less maintenance but allowed us to lock up and leave because we’re planning to do a lot more travelling in the next few years,” Mrs Whimp says. They chose Halcyon Lakeside after looking at three other communities on the Sunshine Coast. Mrs Whimp loves Halcyon Lakeside’s great sense of space, lower housing density and beautiful landscaping. And with so much travelling yet to do, they both appreciate the peace of mind of being able to lock up and leave for weeks or even months. “The gated community and security appealed to me because you feel safe in your own home, and we will feel much more confident in locking up and leaving,” Mr Whimp says. “All of a sudden going to Ma and Grandpa’s is a lot more exciting and my daughter says she can’t wait until she’s over 50 so she can move in,” Mrs Whimp adds.

89-YEAR-OLD ACHIEVER CAN ENJOY LIVING INDEPENDENTLY Sunshine Coast resident Liliana has lived a remarkable life. She is a bilingual world traveller, a pioneer and an author. The 89-year-old was the only woman working at the airport in Malta in the 1940s – even her uniform needed to be specially made. She has lived around the world and chronicled her experiences in a published novel. Today, Liliana lives a lovely life at home on the Sunshine Coast, where she receives support and care to live independently from Just Better Care support professionals. Just Better Care is recognising the achievements of customers like Liliana – who achieve great things while supported to live independently – throughout October and November as part of their Local Achievers campaign. Just Better Care Sunshine Coast owner Tony Sandy says stories of achievement, like Liliana’s, highlight what is possible with the right in-home care and support. “Every one of our customers is uniquely skilled and talented – their stories inspire us every day,” Mr Sandy says. “They know how to live their best lives and we’re here to support them, whether it’s by helping people participate in the activities they have always enjoyed, providing support so they can live safely and confidently at home, or through helping them embark on new challenges or interests. “In-home care helps people live the life they choose in their own homes and communities.” Just Better Care Sunshine Coast is locally owned and operated: “We understand you and your local needs, because we’re a part of the Sunshine Coast community,” Mr Sandy says.

WALK YOURSELF YOUNG The Currimundi ECO Heart Foundation Walking group is testament to the fact that you can ‘walk yourself young’. The group, which was established in 2002, meets at 6.30am Tuesday and Thursday at the Currimundi Marketplace. Walk organiser and original member, Tina Scullion from Mountain Creek, has 43 registered walkers in the group who have joined for health, physical activity and interaction with like-minded people. “Some people join our group who are new to the area and looking to meet people or because their doctors have recommended more exercise,” Ms Scullion says. Ms Scullion also organises monthly walking and social activities for the group which has helped form strong bonds and friendships. “I do a monthly newsletter for the group, which keeps everyone up to date with birthdays and various outings,” she says. “We have a monthly walk to different locations which can vary from the Brisbane River to the Noosa National Park and almost anywhere in between. “Our group offers a big support network to all our walkers and has turned into one big happy family.” Heart Foundation Queensland CEO, Stephen Vines says members of the walking group are improving their individual heart
health with regular walking and are also providing an important support network for each other. More than 6300 Queensland walkers across 268 groups are now hitting the pavement and taking steps towards better heart health, as part of the free Heart Foundation Walking program.

HIA AWARDS FEATURE
THE BEST OF THE BEST The HIA-iLandscape Housing Awards Sunshine Coast/Wide Bay showcased stunning work by our region’s housing design and construction industry.
Paul Clout Design
N
oosa-based business Paul Clout Design has taken out the title of Sunshine Coast Home of the Year at the annual Housing Industry Association’s regional awards. The home’s spectacular ocean views and “sleek, cutting-edge modern” design wowed judges. Set in the exclusive Beaches Estate, the property has been described as a breathtaking designer home offering privacy and security. “Each year the HIA Sunshine Coast/ Wide Bay Housing Awards attract an outstanding array of entries across a number of different housing forms with this year being no exception,” says HIA branch manager Stuart Collins. Dave Becker Constructions won the hotly-contested My Weekly Preview and iLandscape People’s Choice Award. Held at The Sebel, Pelican Waters, the awards recognise building and design excellence and are known for raising the bar in contemporary design, innovation and housing technology. Mr Collins says the awards were hotly contested with an increase in overall entries
on the previous year. “There was an increase in display home entries with new developments including Aura and Harmony,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “There was also an increase in kitchen and bathroom entries. “The judges remarked that the benchmark in design, innovation and quality workmanship has been raised even further and they are expecting a number of these projects to gain honours at state and national level. “The awards are a strong statement of the commitment and dedication of HIA members in Queensland to delivering exceptional housing outcomes that will stand the test of time. “As always, without the involvement of HIA’s many partners, important industry events like this would not be possible and we thank them for their contribution in recognising excellence within industry.” The major winners from the evening will progress to the HIA Queensland Housing Awards to be held in November.

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN Sunshine Coast builder Dave Becker Constructions took out the My Weekly Preview and iLandscape People’s Choice Award. This category enables industry members and the public to vote for their favourite custom-built entries. Becker’s Tanawha property secured the title. The design brief was to take advantage of the spectacular views that surround the property – something the builder achieved brilliantly. The use of bold design and a variety of materials gives this home a modern contemporary feel. One of the striking elements of the home is the statement piece internal stair case, which presents the user with ocean views as they move from the ground to the upper floor area. The overall result is a beautiful home which nestles easily into its surroundings.
CUTTING-EDGE DESIGN Paul Clout Designs was the big winner on the night, taking home the prestigious Home of the Year award. Set in the exclusive Beaches estate on Sunrise Beach, this designer home sits on one of only eight blocks with direct beachfront access. In the company of a small, select group of beautiful contemporary beachfront homes it offers privacy, security, and sleek cutting-edge modern fixtures and finishes. With three large bedrooms, four bathrooms, alongside an office and spacious living areas set over three levels the home is easily large enough to accommodate family and friends. The bonus? The ever-changing ocean view from almost every room and the spectacular sun and moon rises.

MOSAIC WOWS THE JUDGES AGAIN Mosaic Property Group took out not one, but three awards at the HIA event. The developers secured awards for Apartment Complex of the Year, SSC Kitchen $30,001 to $50,000 and Apartment Complex over Four Storeys. With its functional design coupled with luxury materials, prestige inclusions and meticulous attention to detail, Cyan embodies a new level of style – one of the many reasons that it won both Apartment Complex of the Year and Apartment Complex Over Four Storeys. The spacious, open-plan apartments are carefully designed to allow a flow of abundant natural light and ventilation, with each one featuring large furnishable balconies for relaxing and entertaining, or simply enjoying the view. Each of the two penthouses includes a mezzanine level plus a private elevated terrace. The stylish oak timber floors perfectly complement the gourmet kitchens, which include polished stone benchtops and a separate island bench, as well as feature lighting, designer tapware and European appliances.

MAKING THE MOST OF SPACE This project, which took out the Small Lot Housing Award, has been designed to complement its location with a north-facing aspect which utilises the natural sunlight and rotation of the sun to the design’s advantage. Insulation under the slab to maintain a constant temperature, open-plan living, high ceilings and large windows are some of the features that aim to give the home a sense of openness.
ONE-OF-A-KIND Winner: Excellence in Showroom Display/ Steel Frame Project The Ausmar Group headquarters and Atelier showroom is one-of-a-kind. Built by 85 local contractors within 10 months and to a $2.2 million facility budget, this grand design centre has been created to inspire. The two-storey building offers an open-plan office for staff on the upper-level, with care and attention to detail clear in every aspect of the staff-focused space. The star of the project is the expansive showroom, Atelier. Located on the ground level, this space is bright, luxurious and welcoming, offering the ultimate creative experience for every client.

WHO’S BUILDING WHAT – AND WHERE? Keeping an eye on development proposals across our region has now become easier with the Sunshine Coast Council offering a new ground-breaking application, Development.i. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
T
he Sunshine Coast Council has racked up another pioneering move, becoming the first local government in the country to develop an application that makes it easy for residents to find, track and be alerted to development applications in their street, suburb, division or even across the whole region. Development.i was launched on October 10 by Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning, Cameron Dick, and the council. Mayor Mark Jamieson says this simple-to-use but powerful information tool will enable the community to be better engaged in the planning process. “Development.i replaces council’s previous PD Online application tracking system and will provide all the same information but in a much more accessible and userfriendly way,” he says. “Importantly, it empowers our community to be informed on what development is proposed or planned around them.” Project Urban managing director Andrew Stevens was among those who participated in a pilot program to test the effectiveness of Development.i before its launch. “The council’s existing development information systems are excellent, so we were interested to see how this new platform would improve the existing services that council offers and the impact that it would have on the way we conduct our business,” he says.
“We have been using the system extensively since the trial commenced to research the background and context of particular sites we are working on, obtain alerts about the progress of our applications and to monitor particular types of development on the Sunshine Coast.” Mr Stevens says the ability to search for specific types of development applications or approvals within a targeted area will be an invaluable tool for Project Urban. “There is no doubt that it will improve the general public’s access to a whole range of development information… the development of this new platform is another clear indication of the council’s commitment
to continually improving the quality of service that it provides to the local community.” Planning and Development Portfolio Councillor Christian Dickson says Development.i is as easy to navigate as a real estate search website. “This new online tool lets you see what development is happening near you on a map, easily change filters and save searches you are interested in, receive alerts when new applications are lodged and track the status of an application as it progresses – plus lots more,” Cr Dickson says. “It’s as simple as typing in a suburb, hitting enter and results appear on a map representing development or building applications currently in progress. “Or you can change the filter to see past applications back to 2007. “For community members and our many residents’ groups, the new Development.i is a more intuitive and easier to navigate website, meaning they can be more easily engaged in the planning process and stay informed.” Development.i has been developed by council, with the assistance of the Queensland Government’s Planning Act 2016 Innovation and Improvement Fund.
Check out the new platform and a series of ‘how-to’ videos on the Development.i website, developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.
3 Chadwick Street, Buderim Posiঞon is everything with Buderim real estate and the home at 3 Chadwick Street has just that. A brilliant address, right ‘on top’ with an easy walk to shops and medical plus it has a very special component that most homes lack - real character. Real character that resonates in the high ceilings, the VJ pine walls, the glorious ঞmber floors and a very private back deck for entertaining. This special family home has been lovingly restored in a period style that is ঞmeless. 3 Chadwick Street speaks to an earlier ঞme when quality and finish came with relaxed family style in a select part of Buderim.

AUCTION SUCCESS
Keith Blanchard 0419 676 037
Last Thursday resulted in another successful in-room multi-auction event held by North Shore Realty at the Ramada Marcoola. The 50-strong crowd witnessed nine properties go up for sale. Strong bidding ensued with one parcel of vacant land at Mudjimba receiving 50 bids. With half the properties selling under the hammer or prior to auction, and buyers with contracts ready to be presented for others post auction, the North Shore team again demonstrated its success.

with MWP’s man in the water
Julian has found his mojo and is firmly back in contention for the world title. Would be great for it to be decided at pipeline! Locally, I am struggling to remember the last time we had a decent solid ground swell. We seem to get nothing but wind swell, which won’t change until next year. So a bit of insanity is creeping in. Portugal is on, so let’s hope Julian can keep the roll going. All right then, enjoy your weekend with the wind swell and on-shore… yay! Said no one ever. why settle for loving life just over the holidays? The Sunshine Coast isn’t just the perfect place for a holiday. There’s so much more going on. The development of our new CBD, SunCentral and the recent announcement of Maroochydore becoming Australia’s new, global digital gateway are just two examples of just how good our economic future is looking. Whilst new homesites might be a little light on the ground until next year, there’s always a new opportunity for some lucky family to join the Sunshine Cove community, to enjoy the benefits of living within blossoming Maroochydore with a new home. From luxury waterfront homes to chic urban terraces, you’ll find some of the most architecturally innovative homes on the Sunshine Coast right here at Sunshine Cove. Why not drop by and take a look around for yourself. And when you are ready to take a closer look, come talk to us.
