LOOKING FORWARD
As we move into 2025, interior design and home build trends are set to embrace both practicality and innovation. From rethinking traditional areas like the kitchen and bathroom to creating more fl exible spaces for work and leisure, the emphasis is on designs that elevate functionality while enhancing lifestyle. Here’s a look at the emerging trends that will shape our homes in the new year.
MULTIFUNCTIONAL KITCHENS
The kitchen continues to be the focal point of the home, but in 2025, its role will expand even further. Kitchens will become more multifunctional spaces, designed not only for cooking but for entertaining, working and family gatherings. With open-plan living still popular, the integration of hidden workstations or breakfast nooks will make kitchens even more versatile.
Large kitchen islands with built-in seating and storage will be key design features, allowing the space to function as a dining area, workspace and even a spot for socialising. We’ll also see more smart appliances, energy-efficient solutions and sustainable materials, as eco-conscious designs take centre stage.
BATHROOM RETREATS
Bathrooms in 2025 will be about creating a sanctuary-like atmosphere, a place to unwind and escape the stresses of daily life. Spa-inspired designs will dominate, with a focus on luxury and relaxation. Expect to see more freestanding bathtubs, rain showers and heated floors, transforming the bathroom into a personal retreat. Another significant trend will be the incorporation of sustainable, low-flow fixtures that prioritise water conservation. Bathrooms will also feature more natural materials such as stone and wood, connecting the space to the outdoors and adding a serene, organic feel. Storage solutions will be sleek and minimalist, keeping the space clutter-free.

FUNCTIONAL LAUNDRIES
Gone are the days of the forgotten, cluttered laundry room. In 2025, laundries will be designed with the same attention to detail as kitchens and bathrooms, combining practicality with aesthetics. As homes become more streamlined, laundries will feature clever storage solutions to hide appliances and cleaning supplies, making them more functional and less chaotic. Expect to see larger laundry rooms that can double as mudrooms or even pet-washing stations, complete with durable, easy-toclean surfaces. Smart washing machines and dryers will continue to gain popularity, allowing homeowners to control laundry cycles remotely and efficiently.
HOME OFFICE: FLEXIBILITY IS KEY
With flexible working arrangements here to stay, the home office will remain a critical part of interior design. We’ll see more homes incorporating dedicated office spaces that can be adapted for multiple uses. Designers will focus on creating workspaces that are ergonomic, functional and visually appealing, blending seamlessly into the overall home design. Built-in desks, adjustable shelving and hidden storage solutions will be popular, ensuring that home offices are both practical and clutter-free. Soundproofing will also become an essential feature, particularly for those working from home full-time, as homeowners seek to create quiet work environments. Flexibility will be at the forefront, with rooms doubling as offices during the day with the ability to become a guest bedroom or quiet retreat in the evenings.
FENCING TRENDS
Fencing will no longer just be about privacy or security – it will also be a significant design feature in its own right. Homeowners will look for ways to blend functionality with aesthetics, choosing materials that complement their home’s architecture and landscape. Sustainable materials such as composite timber and metal are set to trend, offering durability with minimal maintenance. Fencing will also be designed around enhancing street appeal, using decorative panels, horizontal slats, or greenery to add texture and interest. Privacy screens and fences will also be strategically incorporated into outdoor areas, particularly around entertaining zones, providing seclusion without compromising style and aesthetics.
OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING
Outdoor living will take on even greater importance with Australians continuing to embrace alfresco entertaining areas that feel like an extension of the indoor space. Outdoor kitchens, complete with built-in barbecues, pizza ovens and fridges, will become more sophisticated and fully equipped for year-round use. Homeowners will be investing in outdoor dining and lounging spaces with durable, weatherresistant furniture. Covered pergolas, outdoor heating and fire pits will allow these areas to be used comfortably throughout winter. Water features and vertical gardens will also play a role in enhancing the outdoor ambiance, creating a more tranquil and inviting environment.
INTEGRATED PLANTS
Plants will continue to play a major role in interior design in 2025 but with a more intentional and integrated approach. No longer just an afterthought, plants will be designed into spaces from the outset, with built-in planters, vertical gardens and green walls becoming common features in homes. Indoor plants will be used to create a natural flow between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing air quality and boosting wellbeing. Designers will focus on low-maintenance, air-purifying plants such as ferns and philodendrons, making it easy for homeowners to incorporate greenery into their homes, even if they lack a green thumb.
EFFICIENT STORAGE SOLUTIONS
Maximising storage space and accessibility in your kitchen cabinets is key to a functional kitchen. Consider incorporating features like pull-out drawers, lazy susan in corner cabinets and vertical dividers for trays and cutting boards. These solutions can help you make the most of every inch of space, making your kitchen items more organised and accessible. Customisable drawer organisers inspire you, allowing you to tailor your storage to your specific needs, whether for spices, utensils or pots and pans.
Upgrading your kitchen cabinets can significantly transform the functionality and aesthetics of your kitchen. Whether you’re a cooking enthusiast or someone who loves to host, certain features in your kitchen cabinets can make a big difference in how you use and enjoy your space. Here, the expert team from Foreshore Kitchens at Coolum Beach shares four essential kitchen cabinet features that will elevate your kitchen’s look and enhance its usability.
UNDER-CABINET LIGHTING
Lighting is key in creating the right ambience and functionality in your kitchen. Undercabinet lighting is not just an aesthetic upgrade; it significantly improves the usability of your workspaces by illuminating your countertops, making food preparation easier and safer. LED options offer a cool, efficient lighting solution that can be adjusted to match the time of day or mood you want to create. Plus, it adds a warm, inviting glow that can make your kitchen look more spacious and welcoming.

Experts in Design and Building for over 30 years in the Sunshine Coast/ North Brisbane areas. Specialising in Aluminium, Stainless Steel and Galvanised Steel patios to maintain their incredible look and style, and their functionality.
SOFT-CLOSE HINGES AND DOORS
Gone are the days of slamming cabinet doors and drawers. Soft-close technology is a must-have for a modern kitchen. These mechanisms gently pull the door or drawer closed the rest of the way with a slight push, reducing noise and wear and tear. Beyond the practicality, there’s a certain satisfaction in the smooth operation of soft-close features. It’s also a great way to add a touch of luxury and sophistication to your kitchen.
CUSTOM SOLUTIONS
When selecting kitchen cabinets, prioritise functionality, durability, customisation and aesthetic appeal. These key features are essential in creating a kitchen that’s not just a cooking space but the heart of your home.
BUILT-IN CHARGING STATIONS
To keep your kitchen clutterfree, consider adding a charging station within a drawer for your electronic devices and an appliance garage for small appliances. These features help maintain a sleek and tidy kitchen environment by hiding devices and appliances when not in use.

HOW TO DECORATE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE LIKE A PROFESSIONAL
Create the picture perfect tree with our 10 helpful steps.
1. Pick a cohesive theme – Start by choosing a clear theme or colour palette for your tree. Whether it’s classic red and gold, modern silver and blue, or a natural woodland look, sticking to one theme will give your tree that professionally styled, uniform appearance.
2. Invest in quality ornaments – Those trees you see in the shopping centres stand out due to their high-quality ornaments. Opt for a mix of large, medium and small decorations in various finishes (matte, gloss, glitter). These create texture and depth, giving your tree a more luxurious feel.
3. Fluff and shape your tree – It’s boring we know, but before adding any decorations, make sure to fluff the branches to give your tree a full, lush look. Take the time to spread each branch out evenly, paying attention to gaps that may need extra ornaments or filler.
4. Layer your decorations – Layering is key for a professional look. Start with lights, followed by garlands or ribbon, and then add
EXPERT TILE DESIGN
ornaments. Ensure you place larger ornaments deeper into the branches, with smaller ones toward the outer edges for a more dimensional appearance.
5. Use ribbon strategically – Instead of wrapping ribbon around the tree in a spiral, try cascading it down the tree in vertical strands or weaving it in and out of branches for a more refined, elegant look. Wide ribbon with wired edges works best to maintain shape.
6. Incorporate a variety of textures –Combine different textures such as glass, wood, metal and fabric ornaments to add visual interest. It will make the tree feel more luxurious and balanced.
7. Balance the lights – To achieve that glowing department store effect, make sure to use plenty of lights. A good rule of thumb is to use 100 lights per 30 centimetres of tree height. Be sure to weave them in and out of the branches, not just on the outer surface, to create depth.
& INSTALLATION

8. Focal points with standout ornaments – Choose a few large, eye-catching ornaments to serve as focal points on the tree. Place them strategically at eye level or in areas that naturally draw attention. This adds a wow factor and breaks up the uniformity.
9. Tree topper perfection – The tree topper is a signature element of any tree. Whether it’s a large star, an angel, or even a dramatic bow, make sure it complements your theme and stands out without overpowering the overall design.
10. Add finishing touches with fillers – To achieve that perfectly full look, use fillers like sprigs of faux greenery, berries, flowers or
even oversized baubles. These small details can help fill in gaps and add volume, making your tree look as lush and complete as a shopping centre display.
Don’t feel as though you need to buy all your decorations at once. Rather than buying a stack of cheaply-made decorations, add one or two bespoke or special pieces to your collection each year.

HIS AND HER VANITIES
Take your bathroom to a new level of luxury by installing double vanities. You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
Abathroom renovation is the ideal opportunity to introduce a bit of luxury and functionality into your home, and nothing does this quite like the installation of his and her vanities. These dual vanity setups offer ample space for partners to enjoy their own dedicated areas, helping to streamline busy morning routines while enhancing the aesthetics of the room. With careful material selection and thoughtful planning, a his and her vanity can be a stylish centrepiece that elevates your bathroom renovation. The expert team from Cabinet House at Baringa share their tips.
THE BENEFITS
One of the most significant advantages of installing a his and her vanity is the added
convenience and space. Sharing a bathroom can be a challenge, especially during peak times when everyone needs to get ready at once.
A double vanity offers separate sinks, counters and storage, meaning less frustration. Each partner has their own designated space, which means no more juggling for room at the sink or shuffling items around.
Beyond practicality, his and her vanities also add a touch of elegance and luxury to a bathroom. This setup creates a balanced look, offering symmetry that enhances the room’s overall design. Whether you prefer modern sleek lines or a more traditional aesthetic, there are countless styles available to suit your taste.
MON-FRI: 6:30AM TO 4:30PM SAT: 8AM TO 12PM
CHOOSING THE RIGHT MATERIALS
When selecting materials for your his and her vanity, durability and customisation are key. Bathrooms are high-traffic areas where surfaces will be exposed to moisture and daily wear and tear. Materials like stone, such as marble or granite, are popular for vanity countertops as they provide long-lasting durability and a

sophisticated look. Engineered stone, such as quartz, may also be a great option, offering a wider range of colours while maintaining resistance to stains and scratches. Cabinet materials are equally important. Solid wood or moisture-resistant laminates ensure your vanity stands the test of time in a humid environment. In addition to considering the longevity of the material, ensure that the chosen colours and textures complement the overall bathroom theme.
SPACE CONSIDERATIONS
To successfully integrate a his and her vanity into your bathroom renovation, planning is essential.
Start by assessing your space –will your bathroom comfortably fit a double vanity, or will it feel cramped? Ideally, each sink should have at least 60 centimetres of counter space to allow for comfortable use. You’ll also want to ensure that there’s enough space between the vanities for easy movement around the room. Making adjustments now will save you the frustration later.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Lighting is another key element to consider. Ample task lighting over each sink is essential when it comes to applying makeup, shaving or even styling your hair. Incorporating wall-mounted lights or hanging pendants can add both function and style to the vanity area.
Finally, don’t forget to include plenty of storage in your design. Custom cabinetry beneath the sinks can help keep the bathroom tidy and clutter-free by providing ample space for toiletries, towels and other essentials.

YOUR WOODEN FLOORS
Give your old floorboards a new lease on life with this DIY project.
Updating your flooring can be a time-consuming and costly job. While carpet works well in some rooms, it may not be the best option for every space in the house. If you’re fortunate enough to have wooden floors, you’re already ahead of the game. They might be a bit worn and in need of attention, but if they’re still sturdy and in reasonable condition, there’s no need to tear them up. With a bit of care and a fresh coat of varnish, you can easily restore them to their former glory.
STEP ONE
Thoroughly sandpaper the floor surface.
STEP TWO
Now it’s time to clean. Vacuum the floor and then scrub it with a blend of water and wood cleaner. This will remove any dust or stains.
TIP: The floors must dry completely before you continue the project. Give the floors a good 24 to 48 hours to dry.
STEP THREE
Prior to beginning the project, speak to your local paint expert about the right kind of wood primer and product for your floors. Apply the primer and allow it to dry overnight.
NORM EVANS FLOORS
STEP FOUR
Once the primer has set, it’s time to re-sand the floors. This time around, a lighter sanding will suffice. This ensures that the paint will set appropriately.
STEP FIVE
You will need to vacuum the floors once again. Follow this by cleaning with a dust cloth to ensure there are no small particles of dust left on the floorboards.
STEP SIX
Use a natural bristle brush to apply the varnish (or paint if you choose to use it). Apply the first coat and allow it to drive for 12 to 24 hours. Follow this up with a secondary coat.
Poolfab Pool + Landscape Creations managing director Sean Lynch shares his expert advice on poolscaping.
WHAT IS POOLSCAPING?
When it comes to your pool, designing for flow is so much more than ensuring the water circulates correctly. It’s about curating an experience. An experience that harmonises with nature, complements your eco-friendly ideals and offers a sanctuary for both the body and the mind. Welcome to the world of poolscaping.
Life, as we know it, is changing. Our planet’s health is paramount, and we’ve started aligning our lifestyles accordingly. The world is not just embracing sustainability; it’s celebrating it. And amidst this celebration, eco-smart pool systems are the stars. Benefits of integrating ecofriendly systems into pool designs – Long-term savings:
Think about the joy when you glance at reduced utility bills month after month. Eco-smart systems aren’t just about being kind to the planet; they’re about being kind to your wallet too. Over time, these systems pay for themselves and then some. Environmental impact: Every eco-smart choice reduces your carbon footprint. It means cleaner air, purer water, and a happier planet. It’s a legacy, a gift for future generations.
Choosing the right plants and elements – Stepping out onto your patio, can you picture it? A harmonious, vibrant ecosystem right at your backyard pool’s edge. It’s not just about plunging into the azure waters; it’s also about the verdant embrace that surrounds it. But how do we curate that perfect, lush environment?
When we talk about a pool, we aren’t just referencing the water-filled structure; we’re discussing the life around it. This environment is a symbiotic interplay of water, plants, insects, and microorganisms. But here’s
the thing: not every plant fits the bill. That’s where the power of native plants shines through. Why go native? – Ever wondered why certain plants thrive in their homeland but wither away elsewhere? It’s because they’ve evolved and adapted to their local climate, soil, and even the critters around. Here’s why choosing them for your poolscape can be a game-changer.
Less maintenance, more relaxation: Native plants are acclimatised to local conditions. They are resilient, demand less water and are often more resistant to pests. So, instead of spending weekends nursing exotic plants, you could be lounging by the pool, cocktail in hand.
Boosting biodiversity: Native plants attract local fauna. From birds that chirp melodies at dawn to butterflies that add fleeting bursts of colour, your pool can be the nucleus of a thriving, dynamic ecosystem.
Native plants that beautify and purify – While we all adore plants that beautify, wouldn’t it be
incredible to have ones that also purify your pool water? Some plants are natural filters, taking up nutrients that algae would otherwise feed on. Here are a few to consider.
Horsetail: With its sleek, upright stems, horsetail is a modern design favourite. But here’s the kicker – it’s excellent at absorbing contaminants!
Pickerel Plant: Blooming with vibrant lavender-blue flowers, this plant not only beautifies but also provides habitats for beneficial insects.
Water Hyacinth: With their delicate purple flowers and thick roots, they act as organic filters, pulling out unwanted nutrients from the water.
Melding safety and style – How often have you come across stunning pool landscaping, only to find it’s like walking on a skating rink once wet? It’s a common dilemma: crafting an aesthetically pleasing space without compromising on safety. But let me let you in on a secret: you don’t have to choose.
You can, in fact, have the best of both worlds.
The undeniable importance of safety in design – Have you ever watched a child dash excitedly towards a shimmering pool, heart in your mouth, fearing they might slip? As a guardian of your haven, your first and foremost responsibility is ensuring the safety of those who enjoy it, especially the young and the elderly. A well-designed pool area should feel like an embrace where every family member, regardless of age, can bask in the sun, splash around, or simply lounge without a lurking worry. But how do you balance this safety with style?
ARE YOU READY TO START BUILDING YOUR DREAM POOL?
Innovations in non-slip surfaces that don’t compromise aesthetics – Enter the era of innovative, eco-friendly materials that prioritise safety without dulling the charm. The latest in non-slip surfaces seamlessly combine functionality with flair. Think of surfaces that borrow inspiration from nature – the roughness of a stone, the irregularity of pebbles, or the texture of seashells. Not only do they provide grip, but they also elevate the overall look of your poolscape, giving it a natural and earthy touch. Curious about where sustainability fits in? Many

of these materials are locally sourced, cutting down on transportation emissions. Plus, they’re designed to be longlasting, which means less frequent replacements and reduced waste. So, every step you take is a step closer to a more sustainable future.
How strategic lighting can enhance safety and beauty –
Imagine this: twilight descends, and your pool area transforms into an ethereal space, lights casting a gentle glow on the water and pathways. But did you know that this lighting does more than just set the mood? Strategically placed lights can illuminate potential hazard zones,
like steps or uneven surfaces, guiding the way for night swims.
LED fixtures, particularly solar-powered ones, are not just energy-efficient but also versatile in terms of design. They can be tucked away beneath plants, along pathways, or even embedded in the pool’s walls. The result? An enchanting ambiance that keeps safety at the forefront. And let’s not forget the eco-smart angle. Solarpowered lighting solutions mean less dependency on nonrenewable energy sources, reducing your carbon footprint. Designing for flow – Firstly, let’s tackle the foundation. The layout of your poolscape isn’t just about
No Fuss, Complete Indoor & Outdoor Faux Green Walls
where the pool sits or where the loungers go. It’s the canvas on which your eco-friendly dream will be painted. Think of it like arranging furniture in your living room. You wouldn’t want the couch blocking the TV or a lamp right where you walk, would you? Similarly, in poolscaping, the placement of each element matters immensely. A wellplanned layout optimises space, promotes safety and enhances the user experience. It’s a dance between form and function. And when it’s done with the environment in mind? Well, that’s when the magic happens.
Zones – Have you ever noticed distinct areas or ‘zones’ in professionally designed poolscapes? There’s a reason for that. Each zone, be it the sun-soaked lounging area, the shady retreat, or the pool itself, has a specific purpose. These zones aren’t standalone areas but are interconnected. Think of them like the rooms in your home. You move seamlessly from your kitchen to the living room, each space flowing
effortlessly into the next. The same principle applies here. Now, the beauty is in the details. Incorporating eco-friendly elements within these zones –like a solar-powered water feature or using sustainable materials for your poolside deck – not only elevates the design but also resonates with your commitment to the planet. How flow impacts us – Ever wondered why some spaces just make you feel good? There’s a psychology behind it. A wellflowing design not only pleases the eye but also promotes mental well-being. When everything in your pool landscape is harmoniously interconnected, it evokes a sense of peace and balance. Imagine lounging by a pool where each element has its place, where the flow is so natural that it mirrors the rhythms of nature itself. Doesn’t that sound like a dream? A space that not only offers relaxation but also boosts your mood and wellbeing. That’s the power of thoughtful design.

PLANTS AND PLANNING
From working with colour to choosing plants, here are fi ve tips to kick off your gardening project.
COLOUR BLOCKING
The term colour blocking sounds more like an interior design term than one used in landscaping. However, colour blocking creates a dramatic effect in any garden, outdoor feature wall or entertaining area. The aim is to highlight a particular area and it’s easy to achieve. For a garden, simply choose two colours to plant. We like the use of hydrangeas in the above image. Or, for a painted wall, select your two colours, paint in your first hue and then use the secondary colour to create blocks around artwork or vertical plants. Another way to use the technique outdoors is by laying down a single-colour outdoor rug against the plain floor of your entertaining area. It will create a visually appealing effect.
PROJECT INSPIRATION
How great is this outdoor dining and kitchen area? We love the combination of the stonework with the white tones. We also like the use of the stone floor tiling.
SEEK ADVICE
While it’s beneficial to talk to local nursery and landscaping experts, it’s also good to seek out the help of friends and family. If you’ve seen a garden you like – or know someone who has a similar project – find out what has worked for them. Learn from their mistakes and view their work so you can get an idea of what the finished product will look like.
