Saturday, November 3 will bring the phenomenal Mojo Juju to the Sunshine Coast as she takes to the stage at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi as part of her Native Tongue album tour. It’s a fitting title for the third studio album from Mojo Juju and it is her very essence laid bare. It is raw, honest, emotional and intrinsically political. It is also brutal and relentlessly real. Through the telling of family history and her own personal experiences, Juju explores her relationships with elders and ancestry. Thanks to the Imperial we have one double pass to give away.
FROM THE EDITOR
I
n the last edition of MWP I wrote about five-year-old Sunshine Coast girl Zahlia who suffers with the rare Aicardi syndrome, an illness that causes brain damage. I was overjoyed with how the local community had joined together to help produce a dream home garden for little Zahlia to enjoy her final years. This week, we continue to champion Zahlia’s cause and further bolster community support for her and her single mum, Sally. Journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane had a tear-filled interview with Sally about the pair’s future. This beautiful story is sure to touch your soul, and your heart. You can read it on page 14. This is one of the many reasons we do what we do here at My Weekly Preview – to share incredible stories and encourage community connection and engagement. After all, what is a community without support for one another? Cancer survivor Joe Surace is one person who is showing his love for the community. The photographer has joined forces with USC student Emma Downer to share local stories and stunning images of cancer survival to support Sunshine Coast charity Bloomhill. His story is on page 18. Also in this week’s edition we have your favourites – property, entertainment, food and beauty. With just over a week to go before Melbourne Cup, in our cover story we take a look at the fashions and local events that will shape the 2018 event. Enjoy.

QUICK CHAT
WATCH & LEARN Where do you live? I was brought up on the Sunshine Coast but I have lived in Sydney for almost seven years. First job? Spuds and Brothers Neilsen in Sunshine Plaza. What are you currently working on? The eighth season of Gogglebox Australia and planning my move home to the Sunshine Coast to be closer to my family. Your family includes? My Coast family includes my mum, my dad and two brothers and my Sydney family includes my Gogglebox partner in crime Yvie Jones, my old housemate Tom and our many rescue dogs!
If your life was a book, what would be the title? Tilt-A-Whirl.
Angie Kent BIO
y t i l a n o s r pe
Sunshine Coast-born TV personality Angie Kent (left) now lives in Sydney. You may have seen her on the two-time Logie Award-winning television show Gogglebox Australia. When Ms Kent is not watching and commentating on television shows, she works as a carer for people with disabilities, helps run a not-for-profit animal rescue agency, and is an ambassador for SEED, an educational camp that empowers women in South Africa. Gogglebox isn’t Ms Kent’s only foray into TV – she lived with a man with Down syndrome for more than three years and took part in a documentary about her living situation, getting into animal rescue charities and winning Logies. And she doesn’t just watch TV for the show – Ms Kent says she is addicted to reality TV, though everything she watches is “way too embarrassing to admit”. When she has time she returns home to Alexandra Headland and the home where she spent her teenage years. She says, “Looking over the balcony to the beautiful ocean is simply heaven on earth!”
What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? I am watching Fresh Meat for the third time, and whatever shows Gogglebox throws at us each week.
Best advice you’ve been given? You have to feel it to heal it! What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? My family home on Alexandra Headland hill. I love going home and looking out over the balcony to the beautiful ocean. If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? More jobs in the entertainment industry so I could move home for longer! Best day in your life and why? Every day should be the best day of your life, but one of my favourite days was when I stepped foot into a school in Orange Farm,
With great deals on carpet, timber, laminate, luxury vinyl, and rugs, you’re sure to find the floor you’ve been searching for.
Your greatest regret? I generally don’t have any regrets. I do a lot of ridiculous things, but nothing I regret!
“Stop caring about what everyone thinks and just live your best life”
When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I do F45, which I am very proud of as it’s so out of my comfort zone, and I’m getting back into my yoga.
Spring has sprung and it’s the perfect time to save with our Floors for Living Catalogue Sale!
Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? I got really sick a few years back, and since then I see things through new eyes. I know life is so short, we are so blessed and the universe really does have our backs.
You are happiest when? I am with my family, friends and my dogs. Making people laugh makes me so happy too.
First car? A blue Holden Barina. Favourite book? Candy by Luke Davies and The Universe Has Your Back by Gabby Bernstein.
which is a township in South Africa, and met 17 beautiful teenage girls from high-risk backgrounds who I would spend the next week with, teaching them and learning from them.
What frustrates you the most? Lies and overthinking. How do you deal with your frustrations? Music, meditation, reading and writing, and talking to some of my nearest and dearest.
If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Stop caring about what everyone thinks and just live your best life! Meditate, drink heaps of water and exercise! If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Heath Ledger, Dian Fossey and one more dinner with my Nanny Fae. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would start my own charity where I would empower and educate young girls from high-risk backgrounds across the world, open a home for rescue dogs, adopt a bunch of kids and pay off my family’s home (I would probably need way more than a million for all of that). Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Tea. Coffee makes me crazier than I already am. NRL or AFL? NRL any day!

CUP FEVER
Gearing up for Cup Day? We’ve got the lowdown on all things Melbourne Cup, from Fashions on the Field to the history of the Cup and where to watch the big race on the first Tuesday in November.
I
t’s the $7.3 million race that stops the nation, and stop us it does. It’s estimated that around six million Aussies pause annually to watch the coveted Melbourne Cup. Worldwide, it’s expected up to 650 million people will tune in on November 6. And, although the event remains a significant event in the racing stakes, the fashion stakes have become equally as high with Australians estimated to spend around $50 million frocking up for the big day.
First staged in 1962, Flemington’s Fashions on the Field has established its place as one of the country’s largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion events. The four-day event, which runs across the entire Melbourne Cup Carnival, attracts Australia’s finest designers and milliners. Whether you are flying to Melbourne or staying local, the Cup offers the chance to slip into a spectacular ensemble. Nikki Miller is a Sunshine Coast fashionista and the owner of Sedgwick’s Boutique in Buderim, and she says pattern on pattern, pastels and all shades of yellow will be the look of the racing season. The former Melbourne fashion agent believes simplicity with a touch of quirkiness works. “The first thing people notice when you walk in and around the grounds is the hat. The hat could be bring that touch of quirkiness and [be matched with] a beautiful, simple-style dress and shoes. “What I’m hearing from every fashion stylist I’ve listened to, or spoken to, is that while we may not all agree on colours, everyone’s agreeing on one thing – the skirts are a bit longer this time around. It’s about more style, class and showing elegance. You want to show confidence. If you don’t have confidence, the dress wears you and you don’t wear the dress.”

The Melbourne Cup Carnival is known for attracting the big names each year thanks to the big bucks. His relationship with a Kardashian may not be black and white but reality TV star Scott Disick will don the traditional Derby Day dress code as a host at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup carnival. The former beau of Kourtney Kardashian will MC a dance party on November 3 at the exclusive Birdcage enclosure, in a special marquee. Mr Disick, who is best known for appearing on reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, will be joined by a plethora of celebrities including US DJ

Sam Smith Khaled, Grammy-Award winner Sam Smith and five-time Grammy award winner Dionne Warwick. “Fans flock to the Melbourne Cup Carnival not just for the world-class racing but also the fantastic Cup Day atmosphere and Sam Smith will no doubt delight racegoers,” says VRC chief executive officer Neil Wilson. -AAP
DID YOU KNOW? • Yellow – from soft pastels to rich mustards, any shade will work. • Steer clear of nude shoes – choose colour or pewter, which will match almost anything. • Put Micropore paper tape on your feet where your shoes might rub – it’ll save the pain, and looks better than bandaids.
The first Flemington race meeting was held on the rough river flats beside the Maribyrnong River in March 1840 when the town of Melbourne was barely five years old. This was just two years after Melbourne’s first race meeting, near present-day Southern Cross railway station. Melbourne’s great wealth and growth from the gold rush era of the 1850s to the land boom of the 1880s made the city the most dynamic in Australia. The Melbourne Cup rose to fame as a social and fashion event as well as the national sporting highlight of the year. By the 1880s Flemington was attracting crowds estimated at 100,000 for Cup Day. LOCAL NEWS
A DREAM COMES TRUE As the mum of a child with a rare disorder, every day is a challenge for Sally White. But the Sunshine Coast community has rallied around to build a dream backyard for Ms White’s daughter Zahlia. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
Z
ahlia White is five years old and this water baby loves colour, movement, being outdoors and sushi. She also loves the feeling of hair tickling her nose, and has the most magnetic eyes you’ve seen and an incredibly infectious smile. But her angelic looks belie an incredible strength that has seen her overcome many odds in her short lifetime. She is one of just 200 people in the world who suffers from an extremely rare genetic disorder, Aicardi Syndrome, which means she has an absence of the corpus callosum (the middle part of the brain which allows left and right sides of the brain to communicate), severe brain damage on both hemispheres, suffers from daily seizures and has lesions on her retinas resulting in vision impairment. Mum Sally White says Zahlia was diagnosed at 12 weeks of age and doctors said her precious daughter would probably not survive to see her first birthday, let alone be able to recognise anyone or walk. But Zahlia has done all of that and more. Ms White says Zahlia’s fifth birthday in March was a “bittersweet” moment. “I never thought she would make it, so it was incredibly emotional to reach this point with her and then I took a breath and realised what we have gone through over the past five years, the constant hospital visits, being sleep deprived, the trauma of seeing your child not breathing and turn blue – the pain of that doesn’t go away,” she says. “Some days you can cope with it and other days you can’t. It’s a constant emotional rollercoaster and on top of seizures, she frequently gets pneumonia and has serve allergies to certain types of food, so I make it all from scratch. “Zahlia has five types of seizures, but the most common happen at night during sleep and watching her go through seizures, never knowing whether or not she is going to pull through the next one… I adore this child so much and she is constantly battling, so when she has another birthday I am so grateful but also not sure how we will find the strength to get through another year, or five.” The Sunshine Coast community has rallied behind the Mooloolah Valley single mum and her daughter to donate
Zahlia with mum Sally White materials, labour and equipment to create a dream backyard in which the pair can spend quality time enjoying the great outdoors together without the need for lengthy and physically draining visits to local parks. After her husband left, Ms White withdrew her superannuation in 2016 to create a beautiful haven for Zahlia, who adores being outside in nature. But a dishonest tradesperson left her out of pocket with additional landscaping problems that didn’t exist before her investment. It was during an inspection by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission that she met iLandscape owner Jason Kay, who vowed to help her bring her vision for Zahlia to life. Ms White then connected with Mix FM’s Todd and Sami

at an event she attended as a representative for the Make-AWish foundation and the dynamic duo jumped on board to bolster Mr Kay’s efforts. Last week, Mr Kay was on air with Todd and Sami every afternoon, collecting the details of generous Sunshine Coast residents and business owners who jumped on board the project, and work began on Monday to bring it all to life. The final working bee and big reveal will happen on October 27. Ms White says at first she was uncomfortable asking for help because she is so used to just focusing on getting through each day with Zahlia without asking for assistance. But now she is in awe of the generosity of the community and cannot believe the dream garden she wanted for her daughter will become a reality. Ms White says taking Zahlia out and having to endure the judgement of others as her non-verbal daughter shrieks uncontrollably with delight and does things that “aren’t socially acceptable”, has made their weekly visits to Happy Valley, one of Zahlia’s favourite places, harder. “I’d like people to try and be kind to those they don’t know. Try not to give us those looks that say, ‘why is your child screaming at that age?’ or giving me your opinions about why I shouldn’t be parking in the disabled car parking space,” she says. “It’s tough enough to live a life like this without having people judging you because they feel something is not okay. My daughter screams because she has brain damage and that is how she communicates that she is happy. “There have been times where I have told people this after they’ve asked me to quieten her down and instead of showing understanding, they walk away in disgust. “Please, be more considerate of people with disabilities and smile rather than frown.”
While the community has rallied together to transform Ms White and Zahlia’s backyard, they have ongoing medical, therapy and medication costs to manage. If you can help, please donate to theboardmeeting.org.au/donate-now.

LOCAL MUM STRIKES GOLD WITH STRUCKET After the birth of her third child, Kelly Lavery was soaking everything you can imagine – nappies, bibs, clothes, toys, not to mention her own sheets and towels. The soaking part was simple – she would fill a bucket and let her items marinate as the stains, dirt, and grime dissolved, however it was the aftermath that made her want to cry. And so the Strucket was born. It is a strainer you can pull out of a solid bucket. Now backed by a $100,000 Ignite Ideas Grant, Ms Lavery’s innovative idea is ready to hit Australian homes. To celebrate the launch, one person will receive their Strucket filled with $1000 cash. Visit strucket.com.

The new retail offerings are yet another reason to visit the waterside precinct, after the recent opening of activity booking centre The Booking Box and a range of dining and drinking establishments including La Finca, Rice Boi, The Dock Mooloolaba, Saltwater Fish and Chippery & Bistro, Chances, Boston Shaker and Fior Di Latte Gelateria. Already in the past 12 months, visitation to The Wharf has increased to about 500,000 people, as the precinct comes back to life, returning to the bustling recreation, dining, retail and entertainment precinct it was more than 20 years ago.

SURVIVORS IN FOCUS A Sunshine Coast man is using his skills and experience to celebrate local stories of cancer survival, and give back to Bloomhill Cancer Care, the organisation that supported him. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
F
our years ago, Joe Surace thought he was going to die. In May 2014, Mr Surace was just days away from death when he was transported to Nambour hospital. His liver was failing and he was in and out of ICU as he spent 133 days in hospital receiving chemotherapy and a host of other treatments to survive. What had started as embryonic germcell cancer, a form of testicular cancer that had been present in his body since birth, had spread to his lymph nodes and then his liver. By the time he was released from hospital, the then-40-year-old lost all mobility and weighed just 40 kilograms. It has been a long road to recovery for the Buddina resident, who says he is still not physically 100 per cent but is improving with every passing day. “I was fortunate because with embryonic forms, it is something you are born with and most men will have their cancer triggered between the ages of 18 and 25, but I got to 40, which made it really hard for the doctors to diagnose what I had,” Mr Surace says. Like countless Sunshine Coast cancer patients, Mr Surace found priceless support
Cancer survivor and photographer Joe Surace with Emma Downer through Bloomhill Cancer Care and now that he is strong enough to begin working part-time, he wanted to dust off his camera and give back to the Buderim charity. “I did professional photography for more than 20 years and although I am not back into it just yet, I wanted to donate my time to photograph clients at Bloomhill and share their stories to show that while cancer has kicked us in the guts, we are still
smiling and still surviving,” he says. “A lot of the participants didn’t realise I was a cancer survivor myself. They were shocked and truly appreciative that I understood their story as they were telling it to Emma [Downer] who was at every photo shoot to ask the participants questions to document their stories.” The excerpts written by Ms Downer, who partnered with Mr Surace for the project, will
be paired with the powerful black and white images and transformed into an evocative book. “While it was emotional for some, I wanted to give the participants the opportunity to be happy and talk about the survival side of it,” Mr Surace says. “This process has helped to empower these people as well. Some of the women chose to be photographed topless because they no longer have breasts; they have scars there. They want to show that cancer’s given us a hard time and we have the scars to show for it, but we are still surviving. “I’ve got my own scars that I feature in some of the photos as well. I didn’t want to sugarcoat it, and some of the photos are in your face, but I also wanted to show that some of these people still have smiles on their faces too.” Ms Downer is set to graduate from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a degree in creative writing next week. She says it was humbling to be a part of the project and to share those moments with the participants.
An exhibition will be held at Bloomhill in the coming months to launch the book.

PROFILE
PHOTOREALISM AT ITS BEST
IMAGES: ROBYN ROLTON
Award-winning local artist Phil Rolton has a unique way of capturing the beauty of Sunshine Coast landscapes. He talks about the local art scene, which he’s been a part of for 45 years, with My Weekly Preview. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
Early Morning at Moffat Beach Headland
P
hil Rolton’s stunning photorealistic landscapes and seascapes have brought him into the spotlight in recent years, but the 80-year-old Sunshine Coast artist has been a stalwart of the local art scene for decades, working as a founding member of the committee that got the Caloundra Regional Gallery off the ground. Born in Sydney, he studied fine art in Sydney and Melbourne. Drawn to art from an early age, his first job was in printing, working for Woman’s Day and Women’s Weekly magazines, back before everything went digital. “Art wasn’t a thing you did then,” he says. “It was just a hobby. That’s why I got my job in printing. I was in the process side of
printing, making the films and retouching the colours before they finish up on the cylinders. There was only yellow, red, blue and black. “It was very meticulous and technical, using brushes to get the right balance.” Mr Rolton settled with his wife Robyn and their two children in Caloundra in 1972 and he became a nurseryman for Caloundra City Council for 23 years while actively working to establish the local art scene. “I’ve always been involved with painting and was heavily involved with the Caloundra Art Show, which went for about 27 years,” he says. “I was involved with that from the first show and always put a painting in. All this time we were building towards the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and I was
the first president of the Friends of the Art Gallery. I helped get it started.” After many years in Caloundra, Mr and Mrs Rolton felt like a change. Three years ago they moved to Noosa, where Mr Rolton has exhibited and won a number of people’s choice awards in local prizes. Conveniently, Mrs Rolton is a photographer who is able to capture any landscape that takes his fancy, which he then uses to create his unique artworks. Mr Rolton has won a number of awards, including the 2017 open award at Gympie’s Rush Art Competition for his depiction of Double Island Point, which was purchased by Gympie City Council. He was a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize in 2014 and has been a finalist every year in the Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize, an exhibition that has been running at the Caloundra Regional Gallery for five years. “The depth of talent is amazing,” says Mr Rolton. “It just keeps getting better every year. It attracts a large diversity of artists.” Mr Rolton missed out on a major prize this year but he’s still in the running for the people’s choice award, which will be
announced after the exhibition closes on December 9. After years of working with oil paints and acrylics, Mr Rolton feels he’s found the perfect medium – watercolour and paper – and his entry for this year’s prize, a painting of Moffat Beach, is a fine example. “I gave oils away early, I didn’t like them, they don’t dry quick enough,” he says. “The last five years I’ve been doing photorealism with watercolour and paper. It’s a bit harder, when you put your paint down you can’t fiddle around and take it off again. I like the direct light – it’s got a light in it that’s nice to work with. It takes a bit of practice. I don’t know if I’ll be doing it for the rest of my life but I’m happy doing it for now.”
A BOOST FOR LOCAL ARTISTS The fifth annual Local Artists – Local Content Art Prize exhibition opened at the Caloundra Regional Gallery on October 17 with Buderim artist Jan Strudwick announced as the $5000 Best of Show winner for her mixed-media work Standoff at Maleny. The exhibition gives local artists an opportunity to showcase their work and share in $13,500 of prizes across six categories. Arts portfolio councillor Rick Baberowski says, “A wander through the exhibition is a great opportunity to see the variety of high-quality art being created right here on the Sunshine Coast and, if you’re quick enough, an opportunity to purchase one of the finalist works for yourself.” The exhibition will run until December 9.

RIO’S BUYBACK
R
io Tinto has announced an off-market share buyback. The buyback invitation is being made only to eligible shareholders with a registered address in Australia or New Zealand. The final buyback price will consist of a capital component of $9.44 per share and the balance will be a fully franked dividend. Based on the current price of RIO, one could estimate a possible final outcome as follows: RIO current price at time of writing – $76.80. Buyback price based on anticipated 14 per cent discount – $66.05. This is comprised of capital – $9.44, dividend – $56.61, and franking – $24.26. This gives total buyback proceeds of $90.31. Compared with the current price, this gives a potential profit of $13.51 or 17.6 per cent. Buybacks are always scaled back, so unless you end up with a small holding of
less than 30 shares, 100 per cent of your holding will not be taken. However, holdings that result in parcels of less than 30 shares will be fully bought back. Buybacks have a few pros and cons. On the positive side, they are profitable for those who don’t pay any tax. We generally don’t recommend them in accumulation super, or for shareholders who pay tax at marginal rates. If the price of RIO stayed steady post buyback, you could repurchase the shares on market and lock in a short-term profit of around 17 per cent. On the negative side, the franking credit refund will not arrive until your tax return is lodged for next year. Also, a profit is not guaranteed. There is always the possibility the RIO share price could rally strongly between the time when the buyback price is set and when you actually receive the proceeds. If the intention is to buy back into RIO to recover the shares that have been accepted in the offer, you could possibly pay more than the $90.31 price used in the example above. It is imperative to talk to your adviser regarding how appropriate the strategy is for you. Mark Davidson is an authorised representative (no 427049) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. MY OPINION
ROYALLY IMPRESSED
DRAMA AT DISNEYLAND
Sami Muirhead is following the Royal Tour and was delighted when Meghan Markle wore a brand of jeans made by an ethical company.
Rebecca Grisman realises on a trip to Disneyland with her young child that when things don’t go your way, attitude is everything.
O
h Harry and Meghan! I just cannot get enough of the two of you. Your genuine public displays of affection and the way you both treat every single person you meet with such warmth and love just blows my royal-obsessed mind. Of course, you both brought the rain to drought-affected Dubbo. Harry, you picked a good one, didn’t you? And Meghan: you bake banana bread, wear heels, are socially conscious and look like THAT while you are pregnant. Meghan Markle, you are pretty much a member of The Avengers. A modern day superhero. My favourite moment so far has been the duo meeting five-year-old little Luke in Dubbo, who patted Harry’s beard the way I pat my shitzu when I haven’t seen him all day long. Harry’s beard was stroked and tugged, all while the captivated prince laughed and looked at little Luke with admiration. It made me cry to watch this beautiful human interaction. But there has been another story I have loved. I follow a website called What Meghan Wore and a sister site called What Kate Wore. Anything these royal gals wears pretty much gains global attention and often sells out online and in shops. When Meghan got down on her haunches to hug little Luke she was wearing an Aussie brand of jeans called Outland Denim. The owners of this company are incredible. When you pull on a pair of their
high-end denim you are pulling someone from Cambodia out of poverty and a former life of sex slavery. James Bartle is the co-founder and CEO of Outland Denim and started the business after watching Taken, the 2008 movie starring Liam Neeson that showed the atrocities of sex trafficking and modern day slavery. He ensures staff are helped with dealing with their trauma. They are taught how to handle finances, daycare is supplied for infants, English is taught and the staff are treated with dignity and respect. This has huge knock-on effects for each staff member and their immediate families. The goal is to get each employee out of poverty. Sustainable fashion and ethical buying is something we are going to hear a lot more about. Personally, I am changing and would rather have less clothing and wear something I know has helped someone than something that is cheap but has trapped someone into a rubbish life. The denim company’s Instagram page captured a picture of Meghan wearing their jeans and captioned it: “We cannot think of a more suitable woman to carry the Outland Denim brand. A big thank you to the Duchess of Sussex (and bump) for choosing to wear them on this royal tour. #zeroexploitation.” Who would have thought shopping could help us all have an international voice?

T
he past day has shown me one of life’s greatest lessons, in a tidy nutshell. Within 24 hours I flew long haul with a child, transiting through two of the world’s busiest airports and wrangling issues of botched bookings, language barriers, delays, long queues, surly staff, lost things, officious officials, sleeplessness and jet lag. I’ve been people watching throughout and witnessed a wide range of mixed emotions to the setbacks and the wins, and had to manage my own temptation at times to laugh or cry. Finally, we have arrived, late but at last, to Disneyland. The happiest place on Earth, right? It’s also the perfect catalyst for providing the ultimate lesson in parenting and in human behaviour – that attitude truly is everything. The most famous theme park has all the elements for staging the greatest test of your resolve to enjoy every moment; it has momentous queues for extreme anticipation, intense excitement over meeting famous characters, lots of bright lights, noise and action for sensory overload, abundant sugary treats, and just about every tantrum causing scenario you can imagine for both kids and adults. I saw implosions, spontaneous dancing, hugs, tears and stand-offs, all in the first hour!
It’s certainly the place to be if you want to see people’s buttons pushed. I quickly realised, albeit the hard way, how attitude matters most. My grumpy child finally lifted when I focused on the excitement. The waiter responded most to smiling customers. The security guard high-fived us for playing along with a gag. We tiredly walked home singing Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, behind sniping parents carrying sobbing kids still taking bites of fairy floss.
“It’s the perfect catalyst for providing the ultimate lesson in parenting and human behaviour” As my little grumpster finally succumbed to sleep after 20 hours awake, he vowed to me that tomorrow he’d be ready to be happier all day, even in the long lines, because that’s the whole reason we are here, after all. He gets it and that is what really matters.

One contact from concept to completion, too easy!!
Did you know that two-thirds of Australians drop their phones at least once a week? While they don’t all result in the need to visit the phone doctor for a screen replacement, the odds increase even more if you’re an active person who takes their phones on the go. Whether you’re switching from your warm-up playlist to something a little more up-tempo or snapping progress selfies on that post-session endorphin high, smartphones play a central role in every gym-goer’s life. Tech21 has a range of lightweight cases that are proven to keep all the latest smartphones safe. They include the Evo Max, Evo Wallet, Evo Check and Evo Tactical (pictured).

The sensuality and style of burlesque comes to Maleny in this show full of feathers, sequins and seduction. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

n a world where so many women are unhappy with their bodies, a Sunshine Coast powerhouse trio are standing proud and encouraging women to embrace their curves and love their bodies. The Kitty Kats, made up of renowned vocalists Michelle Brown, Renae Suttie and Susanne Campbell, are set to take Maleny by storm with their sizzling Bringing Booty Back Burlesque Cabaret. The trio will perform their signature sassy mix of three-part acapella harmonies, cabaret, swing, blues, and rockabilly and special guest Scarlett Tinkabelle will tantalise with her burlesque acts. Ms Suttie says there will also be extra surprises on the night for those who come along to enjoy the intimate cabaret show. “As the night progresses, we want to include some extra excitement along the way and Scarlett definitely has some wow items. Guests should bring their feather boas and dancing shoes because we want them to get involved by learning dance moves and having a real dance party at the end,” she says. “What we find with this show is that at the beginning of the night, there are all separate groups of people in the room and by the end of the night, it’s one big party to be honest. Everybody is feeling so comfortable not only with themselves and their friends but with everybody else in the
room and people put their guard down and we end up with an all-inclusive and all-encouraging environment.” Ms Suttie says she suffers from selfconscious moments like any woman, but she loves helping women to realise that being real and loving themselves the way they are is truly empowering. She says those who come along will be in for the night of a lifetime. “We encourage people to dress in the theme, which is burlesque boudoir, as much or as little as they wish and come and party with us,” she says. See Bringing Booty Back Burlesque Cabaret at the Maleny Community Centre on October 27 at 7pm. Tickets are $25 plus booking fee from trybooking.com/UPEO.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27

MY TIME
TODD’S TALES Todd Widdicombe breaks out some new dad jokes with plenty of cheese.
F
riends, did I ever mention that my great-grandfather invented the cold air balloon? Sadly, it never really took off. Having said that his grandson, my uncle Frank, has invented coffins made entirely of Perspex and glass. How will the business go? Remains to be seen. The council rang me yesterday, told me my dog needs to be restrained, she’s been seen chasing people on bikes. That’s rubbish, my dog doesn’t even have bikes. Yeah, it’s been a while since we dipped into the vast collection of nonsensical dad jokes that rule my life, we even have a segment on my radio show where the people compete for a life changing meat tray for the best/worst/lamest dad joke. To be fair not all dad jokes defy modern science in that they suck and blow at the same time. These days most DJ’s are actually pretty clever. There’s a subtle art to the delivery of a dad joke and only a fully licensed dad will know the nuances needed. There needs to be a sweet build up, a crushing punchline delivery and a little cackle at your own joke at the end. Sure, laughing at your own joke is like hi-fiving yourself in public, but when it comes to dad jokes, anything goes.
Try some of these little beauties on for size this coming weekend. I’m adopted, you already know that but what you don’t know is that I was raised by a pack of wild hyenas. Times were tough and food was scarce, but boy did we laugh. An elephant turns to a naked bloke and says, “Sure that thing’s cute and all but can it pick up peanuts?”. I went to the doctor with a piece of lettuce sticking out my ear. The doctor said, “What’s going on here?” I said, “Well Doc, that’s just the tip of the iceberg.” A young kid asks his dad, “How come my sister’s name is Rose?” The dad says, “That’s because your mum loves roses son”. The boy says, “Okay, so what about me?” The dad replies, “Well that’s a long story Toohey’s Extra Dry.” I bought my buddy an elephant for his room. He said “thanks”, I said “don’t mention it”. My wife came out of the bathroom and I told her she had drawn her eyebrows too high. She looked surprised. I stopped in at the Mr Whippy van and asked for a chocolate cone. The guy said, “Hundreds and thousands?” I said, “How about we start with just one?” I saw a guy at the ATM and he only had one leg. I said, “Are you okay mate?” He said “Yeah I’m checking my balance.” AND FINALLY… one of my all time favourites. Two nuns are driving home from church and a vampire jumps on the bonnet of the old Mazda. The young nun shouts out, “Sister what do I do?” The older nun says, “Quick my child, show him your cross.” So the younger nun leans out he window and yells at the vampire, “Get off the bonnet ya idiot!” Hopefully you can crack a cold frothy one this weekend and dine out on some of these rippers. Me, I’m off to cook up my favourite beaver curry now, it’s just like a normal curry but a bit otter. Sorry.

music festival that is bookended by volleyball is unlike anything the Sunshine Coast has ever seen before. While beach volleyball is typically linked with good music, Sandfest festival director Jeff Bampton says having live music from renowned local and national bands as part of the inaugural event will “take it to the next level. Mr Bampton has operated the Coast’s largest beach volleyball venue, The Sandpit, since 1996 and he says the event, held at Crusher Park in Nambour from October 26 to 28, is aimed at growing the sport he has been passionate about since 1990, when he first spiked a ball over the net. The three-day event kicks off with the inaugural Sunshine Coast Beach Volleyball Schools Cup, something Mr Bampton hopes will build strong foundations for the future of the sport as well as a springboard for young athletes to get experience in competing in the sport and will finish on Sunday with the Alliance Automation Novice Pairs Division
DOWN BY THE RIVERSIDE You could be forgiven if you’ve never heard the name Sister Rosetta Tharpe – or if you’re surprised to hear that to many, she’s considered the Godmother of Rock and Roll. Sister Rosetta might not be a household name; however, as a young woman during the 1940s through the ’60s, she brought gospel music from the church to the mainstream, performing in such prestigious venues as The Cotton Club and Carnegie Hall. Her recorded music and live performances played a highly significant role in the creation of rock, with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Little Richard and Chuck Berry citing her as an inspiration. Fascinated by the history and stories of the music, Robyn Brown has created a gospel show, Down by the Riverside, performing many of the influential songs from the genre and telling the stories behind them. myweeklypreview.com.au

MEDITERRANEAN DIET MAY CURB DEPRESSION New research shows a diet low in saturated fat, sugar and processed food could lower risk of depression by 24 per cent. WORDS: Sally Wardle AAP.
F
ollowing a Mediterranean diet could help prevent depression, new research suggests. Eating plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts, plant-based food and fish may cut the risk of developing the condition by around a
third, according to a study published in journal Molecular Psychiatry. Meanwhile, a diet high in saturated fat, sugar and processed food was associated with an increased likelihood of depression. Lead author Dr Camille Lassale, from the
department of epidemiology and public health at UCL, London, says: “There is compelling evidence to show that there is a relationship between the quality of your diet and your mental health. “This relationship goes beyond the effect of diet on your body size or other aspects of health that can in turn affect your mood. “We aggregated results from a large number of studies and there is a clear pattern that following a healthier, plant-rich, anti-inflammatory diet can help in the prevention of depression.” The researchers analysed data from 41 studies, including four which examined the link between a traditional Mediterranean diet and mental health among 36,556 adults. People who most closely adhered to a Mediterranean diet had a 33 per cent lower risk of developing depression over the next eight to 12 years, they found, compared to those whose diet least resembled it. Five of the studies looked at the impact of an inflammatory foods diet on mental health in 32,908 adults across the world. A diet low in saturated fat, sugar and processed food was linked with a 24 per cent reduced risk of developing depression over the next five to 12 years. Dr Lassale says: “A pro-inflammatory diet can induce systemic inflammation, and this can directly increase the risk for depression. “There is also emerging evidence that
shows that the relationship between the gut and brain plays a key role in mental health and that this axis is modulated by gastrointestinal bacteria, which can be modified by our diet.” The results mean “there are now strong arguments” for diet to be considered as part of the treatment of mental health, co-author Tasnime Akbaraly said. She adds: “Our study findings support
“This relationship goes beyond the effect of diet on your body size or other aspects of health…” routine dietary counselling as part of a doctor’s office visit, especially with mental health practitioners. “This is of importance at a patient’s level, but also at public health level, especially in a context where poor diet is now recognised to be the leading cause of early death across middle and high-income countries and at the same time mental disorders as the leading cause of disability.”

MENTAL WELLBEING
Healthy workplaces a win for everyone The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. Creating a healthy workplace is both the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. When your teams are healthy (physically, emotionally, psychologically) it’s good for business. There is improved morale and job satisfaction, lower absenteeism and increased productivity. The place is humming. When your organisation makes mental wellbeing a priority, employees have the skills to manage challenges collaboratively, manage self and emotions more constructively and deal with workplace change more optimistically. Your organisation is recognised as a positive place to work that attracts and
retains exactly the people you want and need for sustainability and growth. Workplaces that overtly promote healthy practices have a future because they are better prepared and resilient in the face of adversity, volatility and change. It is important to build resilience in the workplace because for most people, being at work is good for their mental health and wellbeing. We all spend on average more time at work than in any other setting. This gives employers opportunities to influence the health of their team, including improving their resilience. So, what are some of the strategies that are promoted in work environments that value the health and wellbeing of employees? 1. Promoting a culture where asking for help is encouraged. 2. Promoting and building problem-solving skills. 3. Genuine connectedness to others. 4. Expressing gratitude every day – take no one and nothing for granted. Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner suggest an important leadership practice is to cultivate a spirit of ‘encouraging the heart’. Genuinely recognise the contribution of colleagues. The main thing is keeping the main thing the main thing – Stephen Covey. Maria Woods – Principal Sunshine Coast Grammar School

FITNESS
How to choose the right personal trainer In this fast-paced and ever growing health industry, choosing the right fitness professional to guide your weight loss or exercise prescription and training can be a daunting task. For anyone seeking a new trainer, I firstly recommend understanding the differences between the level of qualifications and experience a trainer may have. At the end of the day it’s your health and body on the line. For many, the word personal trainer (PT) is misunderstood or broadly used to describe anyone who designs an exercise program. But there are varying levels of expertise. For example, your local PT at the gym is required to hold a Cert IV in Fitness which entails completing an eight-month online course. At the other end of the qualification chain are Accredited Exercise Scientists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists
(AEPs) who have a minimum three or four year university degree, respectively. Obviously as with every industry, the experience and areas of expertise can greatly vary from one trainer to the next, regardless of their qualification. So what trainer is best for me? As a general rule, I’d always recommend using a trainer who has a minimum university degree. Their knowledge of exercise prescription, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and understanding of any potential red flags (current injuries and medical history) you may have to exercise, is going to far exceed that of someone with a lower qualification. For those with more complicated health conditions such as back or knee pain or chronic disease including diabetes or ongoing heart or health conditions, an Accredited Exercise Physiologist would be your safest choice. However, for those who are just wanting to get out and have some fun, a Cert IV trainer may be sufficient for your goals. While they say you can’t place a price on your health, realistically, deciding on a trainer can come down to cost. If one-onone sessions are beyond your means, ask if semi-private sessions or a discount on bulk buying is available. Or, swipe the good old private health card. This is another area where seeking the
assistance of an Exercise Physiologist differs. Unlike PTs who are only recognised as fitness professionals, AEPs are recognised allied-health workers. This means clients seeing an AEP under GP referral, workcover, Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), diabetes services or Aboriginal health services may be entitled to receive Medicare health rebates or bulk-billing services and if you are covered you can receive pay benefits for services provided. The most important thing you can do when choosing a trainer is to discuss your goals and ensure you are both on the same page. The right fit will be with someone who helps you set the correct goals to achieve your desired results, prevent injuries and help you stay motivated throughout the process.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR 1. Credentials. Do your due diligence and find out their experience and area of expertise. This will pay dividends in trust as you bond and start to work together. 2. Philosophy. Ask how they develop their programs. Is it evidence based, high intensity or purely cardio? How does this fit with your goals and workout preferences? 3. Investment. Does the cost of the service suit your budget? 4. Speciality. Does your trainer specialise in your needs? If you want to strengthen your pelvic floor post baby, you’re going to want to work with someone with experience in post-partum functional movement not an Olympic weightlifter. On Monday and Tuesday, the focus is firmly on family matters. Then, relationship planet Venus reverses through your communication and social media zone; it will be very easy to misread signals and upset a touchy relative, neighbour or friend.
Mercury pairs up with Jupiter on Monday, which favours business, education, travel, social media and convivial conversation as you link up with like-minded souls. But, make sure you pace yourself so that you don’t suffer from information overload!
Monday is a good day to educate yourself about a pressing financial issue. But, peace, harmony and creativity could go out the window (temporarily) when Venus reverses through your sign. Your social life could also go backwards.
Mercury links up with Jupiter in your sign on Monday, which favours reading, writing and researching. Then, Venus reverses into your solitude zone. Aim to get the balance right between socialising and spending time with yourself.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
You’ll find soul-searching comes more easily than usual, as you reflect on mistakes of the past and ponder what can be done differently in the future. You could also receive bonus karmic points for being compassionate towards a family member.
Monday is a wonderful day to network with work colleagues and learn something new. But, are you worrying about a professional issue? Avoid making impulsive moves; a calm, considered approach is the sensible way to go.
Are you working or studying on auto-pilot? With Jupiter jumping through your career zone until November 8, it’s time to accept adventurous advice and look for challenging opportunities outside your comfort zone.
Jupiter suggests you release pent-up energy via physical activity (like a refreshing walk in the great outdoors) while Mercury encourages a talk-fest. Either way, you’ll feel better if you express suppressed energy in positive and productive ways.

(who wanted her surname withheld), is originally from South Australia and says it is the freedom, and quality, of the design that set the terrace houses apart for her at the AVID Property Group estate. “I loved how flexible the builders were about the design of the terrace – having sufficient natural light in my home is important to me and they were able to present me with a range of options,” Anne says.
“I chose to have a seven-metre high ceiling with a sky light, which will allow my home to have an ‘inside-outside’ feel to it, something my kids and I will really enjoy. “A terrace home was a very practical and functional design that I knew would suit my family’s lifestyle without compromising on design. “I hadn’t considered a terrace home, but it was through talking to Simon at Edge Designer Homes and seeing the premium
designs on offer, that I found a home that suited me.” AVID Property Group Queensland general manager Bruce Harper says terrace homes give buyers the convenience of low-maintenance inner city living, with all the space and community feel of the Harmony community – without compromising on high-end design. “The terrace homes that our Display World builders are delivering have all been designed to celebrate the state’s tropical climate and the alfresco living lifestyle that we are known for on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Harper says. “With a range of contemporary and spacious designs, homebuyers don’t have to worry about maintaining big backyards with terrace homes designed to take advantage of Harmony’s vast community spaces. “Terrace homes are among the most highly sought-after designs in Australia due to their versatility in combining the best of both worlds – a house and an apartment – with many terrace homes uniquely designed to offer buyers up to four spacious bedrooms, without compromising on living space.”

GOING FORWARD
Sunshine Coast realtors Belle Property expand into the thriving Maroochydore precinct. Words: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
A
s the Sunshine Coast property market matures from catering for those seeking a lifestyle change into a market that is underpinned by sustained regional infrastructure investment and growing employment opportunities, new real estate agencies are moving into the region. Belle Property Noosa and Coolum directors Ben Radcliff and John Stamp decided the time was right to continue their progression into the central Sunshine Coast and they opened a new office right in the heart of the new Maroochydore CBD this month. Mr Stamp has been in real estate since 2004 in inner city Brisbane before relocating to Noosa in 2011. He joined forces with Mr Radcliff to open Belle Property Noosa in 2016 and the market quickly responded to their innovative approach to bespoke property marketing. Their transition into Coolum in November last year was met by similar success and, as they expand into Maroochydore with an overall staff of 25, Mr Stamp says the team is proving they are in the game for the long term.
Belle Property Group proprietors Ben Radcliff and John Stamp “The majority of sales at the top end of the Coast are established properties and the move to Maroochydore is very exciting for us,” Mr Stamp says. “Maroochydore is a more traditional marketplace, it’s supported by a lot of public sector employment [that] the northern end of the Coast doesn’t have and there is a lot of new development stock coming onto the
Luxury
market, which the northern end doesn’t engage in at all.” “This gives us new models to work in and more of a full business for us to start into. Ben’s background is in selling newer properties, so we can unleash the full capacity of our business.” Mr Stamp says the Coast property market has really matured in recent years.
“In the past, the northern end of the Coast suffered from immense boom and bust periods and the central to southern end of the Coast was a little more levelled in its approach to property prices, turnover and volume of sales, which was symptomatic of being a holiday destination,” he says. “But as the region moves away from a holiday market to having its own brand-new town centre, renowned university, the incredible Sunshine Coast University Hospital and future airport, it has become not just a destination for a coastal lifestyle, but somewhere people can come to make a go of life and as the maturity of the area moves forward, the real estate market moves forward with it. “We now see more restrained, consistent growth, with values underpinned by long term sensible infrastructure plans and the Sunshine Coast Council is very good. Having that long-term vision is giving people a lot of confidence in purchasing and investing here.” With buyers now “becoming more accepting of the span of the Coast” Mr Stamp believes the “grand concept” of the Maroochydore CBD will draw more people to central parts of the Sunshine Coast.

REVITALISED BLI BLI IS A PROPERTY HOTSPOT
I
n recent times Bli Bli has become one of the fastest growing communities, and subsequently a popular residential location. From a relatively quiet location in years gone by, tucked away from the major town centres on the Coast, Bli Bli has now started to create its own attraction as a residential and commercial property hotspot. Work on one of these commercial projects is now underway on a Maroochy River waterfront site with construction set to start on a new boutique style doublestorey complex, which will house around eight new businesses. One of these will be First National Real Estate Riverside. First National Riverside owner Jason Burns is excited by the move. “The growth being seen over the past few years and the overall potential in the Bli Bli area in terms of its central location were driving factors behind committing to the new development,’’ he says. “When choosing who would be the best fit in considering a brand to start a new business with and being able to offer clients an outstanding, professional service, First National stood out to us in ways of technology, brand recognition, training
Artist impression Pictured from left, First National CEO Ray Ellis, First National Riverside owner Jason Burns, Queensland director David Forrest and Riverside senior property manager Bradley Peat and support. “In November 2017 our membership was accepted and the business began, which will now flow into the new development opening soon. We are really looking forward to getting involved in the local community and being available if anyone would like assistance with their real estate needs.” First National Real Estate now has seven

local Sunshine Coast offices and is one of Australia’s leading real estate networks. Recently the CEO and Queensland board of directors travelled to the Sunshine Coast to show their support and interest in First National Riverside and the new Bli Bli development.

with MWP’s man in the water
Okay, Julian is still in the hunt for his maiden world title although a few things will need to fall his way. If you remember, he got knocked out in Tahiti when his heat actually had no waves to surf. It will be cruel if that heat ends up costing him the title. Well, I just saw some pictures from Coolum on the weekend. Some smoking waves were on offer. But, given everyone is starved of waves, the crowd was a bit intense. Additionally, a massive great white shark was spotted up there today so maybe give it a few days… Nah, just kidding. Or am I?
