sking for help doesn’t come naturally to some men, especially when opening up about their concerns and feelings. Statistics show 70 per cent of men say their friends can rely on them for support, but only 48 per cent believe they can rely on their friends. With men’s health a growing issue, as a society we really can’t afford to stay silent. It’s time to open up this conversation. This is where The Movember Foundation steps in by addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by males across the globe: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. As November kicks off – and the moustache movement gets underway – we start the conversation. Television icon Jono Coleman gets the ball rolling by talking to journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane about his battle with prostate cancer, an illness that affects one in eight men. You can read the story on page eight. My message to the women reading this magazine: do the men in your life a favour – put this story in front of them and ask them to read it. It could help to save their life. From men’s health to one of the biggest challenges facing women, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw profiles former Sunshine Coast medical scientist Laura Bray, who is on the frontline in the fight against breast cancer. She truly is an inspiring woman and we can’t wait to see her work change the lives of those battling the deadly disease. Until next week, take care.

MEN – WE NEED TO TALK

As the nation’s blokes put aside their razors to take part in Movember, My Weekly Preview speaks to two men about the importance of talking to their GPs and to each other. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

“98 per cent of men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer have a chance of survival beyond five years”

Jono Coleman Image: Wes Nel

I

t was a Friday night in June 2017 and all of his mates were having drinks to farewell a Studio 10 colleague when Jono Coleman received unexpected news that would turn his life upside down. “I never miss Friday drinks, but here I was with a man with his finger up my bottom,” Mr Coleman says. It was his trademark humour that got the renowned radio and television personality through treatment following a prostate cancer diagnosis. He kept the news under wraps and continued with his regular daytime appearances on Studio 10 and working on his radio show for Macquarie Radio each night while undergoing treatment. It was July this year when Mr Coleman was satisfied that he was “99 per cent in the clear.” It was then the 62-year-old opened up about his diagnosis on an episode of Studio 10. He has now become an ambassador for men’s health organisation Movember and is passionate about raising awareness about the importance of early detection for prostate and testicular cancers. One in eight Australian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer before the age of 75 and Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia statistics show 98 per cent of men diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer have a chance of survival beyond five years. If it is detected in the advanced stages, this rate drops dramatically to just 26 per cent. With no outward symptoms, it was

8 My Weekly Preview | November 2, 2018

early detection through a routine prostatespecific antigen (PSA) blood test with his GP that saved Mr Coleman’s life. He says he had been having his cholesterol tested every six months and decided to check his PSA levels at the same time. When his June test showed a jump from two to seven on the scale, he was sent straight to St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney for a digital examination. Dr Phillip Stricker, whom Mr Coleman fondly calls “the prostate cancer guru”, did

“It doesn’t hurt at all, it’s all about getting in there fast and blowing the sh*t out of it and beating it over the head with a giant medical hammer. For me, I felt I had to be aggressive back to the cancer and let it know I wanted it out of my body.” Mr Coleman says he had to build up the courage to tell wife Margot Fitzpatrick and call his children Oscar and Emily, now 24 and 21 respectively. “Margot was straight onto talking about how we would beat this thing. The kids had

“…when you are feeling weak and you sit down with men around you and share that load, they make you feel strong” Wayne Taylor

not take long to find that the award-winning performer’s prostate was enlarged and treatment began the following day. “The cancer had already jumped out and was in my lymph nodes and a bit of bone in my hips, about four spots,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “The doctors didn’t want to wait, so they blasted it with chemotherapy and then I had seven weeks of radiotherapy after that, zapping the prostate.

a typical Coleman family reaction. Oscar asked if he could speak at my funeral and who was going to inherit my vinyl collection,” he chuckles. “Emily, who was in Europe at the time, asked if my will was up to date. I had to remind them, ‘excuse me, I’m not dying, I’m just about to start treatment’.” Mr Coleman says while there were moments just before starting chemo or

having a PET scan that his mind would wander into the realm of ‘what ifs,’ he would remind himself how many others had fought and won their battles with prostate cancer and his usual positive mindset returned. “While there are moments where you can freak out and have the opportunity to become depressed, there’s simply no room for Negative Nellies,” he says. “There are so many people I know or was lucky enough to have met, like Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Kirk Pengilly from INXS, former treasurer Wayne Swan, who have had prostate cancer and none of those people have died, so what’s the problem? It’s much better to have a positive vibe.” Speaking from his home in Rushcutters Bay, Mr Coleman admits he didn’t know where his prostate was “until it got damaged”, but once the initial shock of the diagnosis wore off, he became fascinated by how advanced medical research is constantly improving outcomes for patients. “They are trialling smart drugs now that target cancer cells by destroying them individually. [The drugs] pretend to be cancer cells and then join onto them and blow them up from the inside,” he says. “There are other trials going on where they give prostate cancer patients a large injection of testosterone, which prostate cancer thrives on, they then blow the hell out of it by giving the cancer exactly what it wants. This is all exciting stuff.” Mr Coleman encourages men and women to start having conversations about myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY their health with their GPs and for men to request the simple PSA blood test and take action immediately. “Women have to have their breast checks and smear tests and guys can’t imagine having to do that. All we’ve got to do is get a bloody blood test and maybe a finger up your bottom to find out what’s going on,” he says. “I’ve already had a woman in Queensland contact me to say she began nagging her husband to get a test after seeing me on Studio 10 and when he did, it saved his life. It’s not a scare tactic. It’s simply a matter of demonstrating how worthwhile it is to get that test.” Now that treatment is complete and he is down to regular check-ups, Mr Coleman and former radio co-host Russ Williams are about to re-launch the popular Russ and Jono Show, which reached number one during its heyday from 1993 to 1997 on Virgin Radio in the UK, with 10 fresh Rebooted podcasts on November 5. During men’s health month, Movember also encourages men to share their emotional loads with others in the name of suicide prevention. This is a cause close to local resident Wayne Taylor’s heart. The 39-year-old Sippy Downs plumber is on a mission to lower male suicide rates by providing a platform for men to connect simply by meeting once a week for a beer or a coffee. It is a long and lonely road that leads men of all ages to contemplate suicide and the Mr Taylor says the age-old Aussie tradition of catching up over a cold one has fallen by the wayside as modern lifestyles and increasing commitments leave little time for the knock-off catch-up with mates. Mr Taylor says this has resulted in more men than ever feeling isolated and when they begin to sink into negative thought processes with no one to pull them out, it is easy to spiral downwards into depression. His initiative, Average Joes, aims to catch men before this happens by giving them a social outlet and connection to new like-minded friends. Mr Taylor and longtime friend Eliot

Krause had been meeting once a week for beer and chicken wings and it was a simple thought to extend the invitation out to the community that saw the birth of the Average Joes movement. It has been so popular that as many as a dozen men aged from their twenties to eighties connect on the Coast each week, and ambassadors are launching new meet-up locations in Perth and Sydney. When you consider Movember statistics that show 70 per cent of men say their

“how are you?”, because we are all conditioned to reply with one-word answers. Instead, they ask participants to tell them about their week. “There is a statistic that says six Aussie blokes will kill themselves each day and it’s terrible. But what about the other men who are on the path of loneliness and that’ve had a sh*t week and they are walking further down that path?” he says. “We are too busy trying to cut down the tree instead of paying attention to what is happening at the roots. Society is forgetting the fundamentals of relationships.” Mr Taylor says in the past, Neighbourhood Watch stickers were beacons of light for people seeking comfort and safety and although the movement has faded, he wants Average Joes to be the modern version for men.

SIMPLE STEPS FOR KEEPING ON TOP OF MEN’S HEALTH Average Joes friends can rely on them for support but only 48 per cent would ask their friends for that same support, feeling comfortable reaching out is crucial. Mr Taylor says because Average Joes meet at familiar bars or cafes, it’s not long before the men “drop their shoulders and drop their guard” and share open and honest conversations. “While a lot has changed in society, men still feel that being weak is not okay and they hide it under a rug. The world is on your shoulders sometimes and it’s heavy, but when you are feeling weak and you sit down with men around you and share that load, they make you feel strong,” he says. “Men are natural problem-solvers and if one man opens up about what is challenging him, the others will be quick to offer support and advice.” Mr Taylor says the group will never ask,

Most prostate cancer is diagnosed during GP check-ups, but some men can experience symptoms such as changes in urinary or sexual function. Men should begin routine prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood tests at the age of 50, or 45 if you have a family history. All you have to do is: • Request a PSA test from your GP • Get the routine blood test done • Discuss any changes in your results with your doctor and plan when you should have your next test done. For tips on how to ‘Know Thy Nuts’, and conduct self-examinations for early detection of testicular cancer, visit movember.org.au.

MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men and Movember is leading the charge in raising awareness and money to fund life-saving research into the disease. In the past 15 years, the international organisation has funded more than 1200 men’s health projects around the world and has set a target to reduce the number of men dying prematurely from prostate cancer by 25 per cent by 2030. Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia (PCFA) research team member Dr Wendy Winnall says because prostate and breast cancers both rely on hormones to grow, prostate cancer patients can benefit from the discoveries made in breast cancer research. According to the PCFA, Australian researchers have recently made significant progress in finding new drugs to combat metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, which is the most dangerous form of the disease. Traditionally, this form of cancer becomes resistant to the latest drugs and resumes growth, but there have been early breakthrough results that show inhibiting protein production can slow tumour growth. An Australian-first proton therapy treatment centre is set to open in Adelaide, providing state-of-the-art treatment options for patients. The introduction of a $400 Medicare rebate for MRI scans to diagnose and monitor prostate cancer will also make the $600 scans more affordable for around 20,000 Australian men each year.

REMEMBERING ARMISTICE DAY 100 YEARS ON To celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Armistice Day, which was on November 11, 1918, head to the Nambour Historical Museum for the opening of a special display in honour of this historic milestone. The Armistice display will open on November 10 from 10am to 3pm and will remain open until December 10. The display features recollections from locals, photographs, uniforms and more. Entry is $5 per adult and $1 per child. Visit nambourmuseum.org.au for more information.

HAVE YOUR SAY ABOUT LIVE MUSIC ON THE COAST Nambour and Maroochydore will have designated special entertainment precincts to support the region’s live music industry if a proposed planning scheme amendment, now open for community feedback, is approved. The Sunshine Coast Council is proposing the amendment, which will change how entertainment uses are regulated in a section of the Nambour CBD and the new Maroochydore city centre. Entertainment venues within special entertainment precincts are exempt from the amplified music noise requirements of the Queensland Government’s liquor licensing laws. To have your say by November 9, visit haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/special-entertainment-precincts.

Sunshine Coast Airport enjoyed its best-ever winter season, increasing passenger movements by over 11 per cent to 304,487 from June to August. The record-breaking performance continued for the first month of spring with a seven per cent increase for September year-on-year in passenger movements. Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Peter Pallot, says in the 18 months since Palisade was announced as the council’s commercial partner for Sunshine Coast Airport, the airport has continued to deliver record performances.

CASH FOR CANS Sunshine Coast’s first recycling facility has launched to coincide with the beginning of the State Government’s Container Refund Scheme. TOMRA has established a recycling depot at Kunda Park to allow Coast residents to bring their eligible bottles, cans and cartons to be recycled in exchange for a 10-cent refund. People can bring their empty, uncrushed drink containers with the original label intact to the centre and receive their refund via retail cash vouchers, a digital Paypal refund or they can donate to a local or state charity. For more information visit containersforchange.com.au/ where-can-i-return.

The 2018 Mayoral Ball is celebrating huge success after raising $67,000 for Sunshine Coast children’s charity Sunny Kids and a number of other organisations. The event, which sold out six weeks in advance, saw hundreds flock to The Shed for a night of glitz and glamour as the venue was transformed into a 1920s themed Ritz Ballroom. SunnyKids patron Mayor Mark Jamieson says the money raised at the 2018 event brings the total raised in the three years since the ball’s inception to almost $250,000.

SUNNY COAST RIDER TAKES SECOND PLACE Cameron Scott (pictured right) has taken one of the biggest podiums of his career, with a second place in the UCI Hors class Japan Cup Criterium on Saturday. The 22-year old ACA-Ride Sunshine Coast rider was narrowly beaten in the final sprint by John Degenkolb of Trek Segafredo. The 2018 edition of the Japan Cup criterium covered 15 laps of a short circuit in downtown Utsunomiya, just north of Tokyo, the location of the 1990 World Championships. Mr Scott’s ACA teammate, Sam Welsford, also finished in seventh place. The team is on the Sunshine Coast for the Noosa Multi Sport Festival Criterium on November 3 before heading back to Japan in mid-November. myweeklypreview.com.au

DRIVEN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE As a young girl growing up on the Sunshine Coast, Dr Laura Bray knew she wanted to one day help others. Now her research on understanding and treating breast cancer is recognised as world class. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

IMAGE: QUEENSLAND UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

W

hen Dr Laura Bray addressed the High Tea by the Sea event at Maroochy RSL recently, her words struck a chord with the 400-strong crowd who had gathered on a wet Sunday to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. An awardwinning biomedical researcher who specialises in 3D modelling to study breast and prostrate cancer, her work is worldclass, but she spends much of her time applying for grants. If you’ve ever wondered why there seems to be a cancer fundraiser every other week, this is one reason. “The Australian Government’s National Health and Medical Research Council funds a lot of research, but the success rate [in other words, those who receive a grant] is only about 10 to 15 per cent,” Dr Bray says. “So there’s a rejection rate of about 85 per cent.” Since Dr Bray completed her PhD in 2012, she’s received about 50 rejections and won about 10 prominent funding grants. “It’s hard on a lot of researchers,” she says. “It’s not that any of the ideas people have are bad – most ideas are wonderful – but there’s just not enough money. “For me, my job is not so much in the lab anymore, it’s writing grants to keep the research going. I spend many months of the year writing grants to the Australian Government and different philanthropic organisations. It’s very time consuming and the success rates are very low. It’s a big journey to get to the point of getting the funding.” Growing up on the Sunshine Coast and moving between Caloundra, Maroochydore and Nambour with her family, who owned a construction business, Dr Bray knew she wanted to work in health sciences from a young age. She was homeschooled along with her two brothers, which enabled her to pursue her passion at full-speed.

“Through homeschooling I was able to accelerate through the schooling grades, so I finished high school two years early,” she says. “I think homeschooling made me more self-motivated. It’s mostly a self-driven curriculum, so you work through the booklets on your own. I don’t know whether I’d say I was extraordinary. I just worked hard.” Dr Bray initially wanted to be a vet, but while studying her bachelor’s degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast, decided to pursue biomedical science. She graduated with first class honours at the age of 18 and went on to complete her PhD at Queensland University of Technology.

In 2012, Dr Bray was awarded the inaugural Prime Minister’s Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award, allowing her to work with Professor Carsten Werner at the Leibniz Institute for Polymer Research in Dresden, Germany for three years. “The award was given to only one woman in Australia and that was very humbling,” Dr Bray says. “I was very honoured to receive that award. For any researcher, it’s a good idea to experience a different lab environment, whether nationally or overseas. “My mentor during that fellowship, Professor Werner, is a polymer chemist and I still work with him today.”

Spring has sprung and it’s the perfect time to save with our Floors for Living Catalogue Sale! With great deals on carpet, timber, laminate, luxury vinyl, and rugs, you’re sure to find the floor you’ve been searching for.

Following her stint in Germany, Dr Bray received a National Breast Cancer Foundation postdoctoral fellowship and a Cure Cancer Australia project grant and moved her research to the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at the Queensland University of Technology in 2016. Through the use of state-of-the-art matrix engineering techniques, her work has led to a number of significant advances in knowledge in the area of 3D tissue engineering and culture techniques. “I’m now just over halfway through that fellowship,” she says. “The first part of it was all about designing the 3D modelling specifically for breast tissue. The second part of the fellowship, which I’m moving into now, is ‘how do we make this applicable for patients?’ We hope we can further understand the different sub types of breast cancer and we want to further understand what treatments will be best, and hopefully into the future we can then match that to patient response and use it to personalise treatment. “Making a difference in cancer patients is what drives me,” she says. “I want to help them. I want to help fill in the unknowns they’re going through at the time. They don’t know how they’re going to respond to cancer treatment, they don’t know if their cancer will metastasise, is the cancer going to come back… I’m trying to address those kinds of questions. I’ll spend my career doing it and that won’t even be the end. “I would love to find something that impacts a patient, even if it’s one patient. I just want to make a difference to somebody’s life and I would hope in the future these models can be used routinely in a hospital to diagnose and predict treatment for patients. “It will be 20 to 30 years before it’s a truly routine procedure. Most scientists have something that drives them during their career and often it’s after their career ends that what they’ve designed becomes a reality.”

COMING SOON Developer Stockland adds to the region’s retail offerings with two new shopping destinations. Baringa Shopping Centre in Aura and Birtinya Shopping Centre will be open for business soon.

T

wo new shopping centre developments are set to boost the Sunshine Coast’s retail offerings for residents and provide new drawcards for visitors. While the construction phase of Birtinya Shopping Centre is now well advanced, work began last week on the $33-million Baringa Shopping Centre, which will service Aura’s first established suburb and surrounds. Both Stockland projects will provide retail hubs for keen shoppers, foodies and those seeking entertainment. The Baringa Shopping Centre is expected to be completed in mid-2019 and Coast business identities Michael and Roz White will establish a full-line Supa IGA at the centre. The supermarket will feature a fresh food hall with butcher and baker, a cafe, juice bar and cheese fromagerie wall. “We’ve seen the growth projections for Aura and we believe the time is right to establish a strong presence with a Supa IGA within the local community,” Mr White says. “We are excited to commence construction on this new store. Over the next few months we’ll be looking to add new staff to our team. Over time we expect to

An artist’s impression of the new Birtinya Shopping Centre employ up to 100 full- and part-time staff.” The 2000-square metre Supa IGA will be the anchor for the centre, which will include 13 specialty retailers, around 300 car parks and commercial offices. Stockland Group executive and CEO of commercial property Louise Mason says the developer has future plans for a medical centre, swim school and tavern. “Our vision is to create one of the best neighbourhood

shopping centres in the state, offering customers a fantastic shopping experience with a go-to shopping destination tailored for their everyday convenience needs,” she says. Meanwhile, the $87-million Birtinya Shopping Centre will grow to 20,000 square metres over two stages and will become a core component of the larger Birtinya Town Centre, which will include a service station, two drive-through tenancies, 60,000 square

metres of commercial space, entertainment tenants, a hotel, apartments and town square with open green space and a walkable waterfront. Stage one retailers will open their doors in December this year. Among them are Fresh Fruit Brothers, local butcher RA Quality Meats, Saffron India specialty grocer, Sushi Ichiban and a newsagent. Coles and Aldi supermarkets will be the flagship stores and they will be accompanied by 40 specialty retailers, including two mini-majors, and 522 car parking spaces. The Birtinya Town Centre development is estimated to generate more than 550 jobs during construction and more than 14,600 new full time jobs on completion. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson says the region is experiencing high levels of business confidence as a result of having a clear plan for the future of the region’s economy. “Proceeding with developments like the Stockland shopping centres are a demonstration of confidence in the future of our region, as we grow our reputation as an idea location for innovation, investment and opportunity,” he says.

MY OPINION

A GARDEN TO CHERISH

PRIZED POSSESSIONS

Sami Muirhead is grateful for the outpouring of community support to build a terminally ill girl and her mum a beautiful new backyard.

Z

halia now has a garden. It’s a beautiful space with a tranquil water feature, a swing, and hundreds of saplings to bloom around the little five-year-old’s feet. I recently wrote about Zhalia, a Mooloolah Valley girl with Acaidi syndrome. It will rob her of her life in the next few years and she has damage to her brain that causes seizures around the clock. A cruel hand indeed for her and for her darling single mum, Sally. Sal simply wanted a safe haven for the two of them to be able to play together and enjoy being outside. Their old backyard was dusty and rocky (Zhalia would eat the rocks not knowing any better) and it had snakes. Well, thank you Sunshine Coast for rallying around Zhalia and granting this gift. I was floored by the generosity of volunteers and business people who came together to create the dream and change for the better the precious time Zhalia and Sally have left together. They now have the most lovely of backyards with a sensory play area; running water feature and plants everywhere. More than 70 people donated their time, money, skills and love to make this happen. Jason from iLandscapes was one of the superstars as the foreman of the project. Rebecca was one of the local ladies who baked treats to keep the tradies going as they transformed the garden. Rebecca

sent me an email offering to help that read: “I’m not an important peep, however I do love to bake and would like to supply a small selection of biscuits to feed the troops. You see, after 25 years married to the most wonderful man that walked this earth, he was diagnosed with cancer and in 10 weeks my life fell apart. That was 14 years ago. Unfortunately, some days it feels like yesterday. Our two beautiful children are grown and have their lives to live. So, it’s just me and I get my solace when I’m in the kitchen baking.” Bec cooked enough food to feed an army. She and I looked at that garden when it was finished and stood arm in arm and had a silent tear together when it was first unveiled to Zhalia. The Lion’s Club cooked sausages, Nick from the movies bought an esky full of choc tops and Make-A-Wish donated playground equipment. People worked for a week on the garden – mulching, plumbing, hammering, digging and building – some dropped off vegetables from their gardens, some gave money and others volunteered to mow Sally’s front lawn for a year. Zhalia’s garden is filled with love and hope and is living proof of how generous this region is when it comes to helping. In a world of horrific news stories, I was reminded humans are not a lost cause. My wish is for some peace and laughter for Sally and Zhalia in that magical backyard.

Richard O’Leary answers a challenge to name his most prized possessions and settles on a book, a painting and a chair.

A

column on my most prized possessions – that was the challenge thrown down by a reader this week. I don’t want to start a free-for-all for story suggestions, but this idea did pique my interest, coming as it did the week I moved back into the family home, after renting it for two years. Before we moved out and the tenants moved in, we threw out a couple of skip bins of stuff, but you wouldn’t have known it as we emptied the storage room of the furniture and boxes we’d kept. The house seemed to fill up fast, so it was perfect timing to ask what I would throw out first and what I would keep forever. To answer the first part of the question – there was little left that was saved for sentimental reasons, most of it was utilitarian: tables, chairs, beds and other household essentials. All replaceable. But what would I keep until the end? I’ve intentionally eliminated from consideration the obvious: family photos, and anything painted, drawn or written by the boys. Although in reality they would be the first things grabbed in a disaster, and the last things I would ever throw out, it would hardly qualify as a challenge to identify them as my prized possessions. So I’ve widened the search and settled for three things. 1. My first edition of Peter Carey’s first book The Fat Man In History. This is my

retirement plan. I bought this rarity for a small fortune about a decade ago in the hope the twice Booker winner would become the first author to win the prize a third time, sending its value skyrocketing. Alas, he is yet to realise my ambitions for him and I will still have to rely on my superannuation. 2. If my house caught fire, the large painting that hangs in our hallway may be difficult to retrieve, but I’d try. The work of Central Australian artist Nellie Marks Nakamarra may not be as sought-after as the paintings of her sister Elizabeth, but this piece means much to me. I’ve spent a decade in the Northern Territory and the ochre, black and white painting takes me back with just one glance. 3. The last of my prized possessions is the rocking chair I used as a boy. Besides photos, this handmade wooden piece of furniture is a reminder of my early years. When I come across it I can feel my warm flannelette pyjamas, hear my mother reading me a bedtime story and smell the pink ointment she plastered on my chicken-poxed skin. Which is why I was chuffed when my youngest son claimed it during the unpack, despite him being well beyond fitting into its narrow frame. Maybe, just maybe it will become one of his prized possessions, and it will keep on rockin’ for many years to come, long after the rest of us have come to a standstill.

Richard O’Leary is a journalist, a political adviser and a father who knows there’s a deeper meaning to life, but struggles to find it.

Vocalist Mr Carroll says Sunray draws on influences from the early 1970s such as New Orleans funk legends The Meters and soul music pioneer Stevie Wonder. “Innervisions by Stevie Wonder is a masterpiece in my opinion and it was definitely a reference point for sounds and rhythm parts in the verses of Sunray,” he says. “We’re tipping our hats to some of our all-time favourite funk artists.”

The intention behind the song is to inspire people to feel uplifted and to move and dance. Sonically it incorporates the elements of funk, dub and roots that the band has become known and loved for. Lyrically it embodies intrinsic human values. “I wrote the lyrics to Sunray up near the lighthouse at Double Island Point. They came about through reflecting on the things that bring me joy – my family, the ocean, being immersed in nature and living in sync with the tides, wind and waves,” Mr Carroll says. “These simple things refresh my perspective and reassert what I am truly grateful for in this life.” Band of Frequencies is at Guru Life on November 4 at 2pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.

He has since won the 5th International Scriabin Piano Competition, was awarded second prize for the performance of Russian music at the Cleveland International Piano Competition and second prize at the Grieg International Piano Competition in Bergen. Author: Stephen Giles Publisher: Penguin Random House RRP: $29.99 Reviewer: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane This is a psychological thriller unlike anything I have ever read. In The Boy at the Keyhole, author Stephen Giles delves into the confused and often complicated mind of a young boy named Samuel, who is living with the housekeeper, Ruth, in a large and foreboding English mansion. The year is 1961 and Samuel’s mother has been away for 113 days. He is yearning for her return and wondering why she left in the middle of the night without a word. But then a friend plants a malicious seed in Samuel’s mind and soon the nine-year-old is stuck in a whirlwind of suspicion, doubt and fear. Seeing the world through his eyes takes you on the rollercoaster ride and it ends with an event you never would have guessed.

FROM ZERO TO 100 A University of the Sunshine Coast graduate has scaled his startup at an incredible pace. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

A

Sunshine Coast University graduate has created a dietetics company that, within two short years, is already making its mark on the industry. Fuel Your Life took home the trophy for Best Health Improvement Services Business in the 2018 Australian Small Business Champion Awards and more recently achieved finalist status in the 2018 Queensland Telstra Business Awards in the Emerging and Energised category. Fuel Your Life owner and managing director Tyson Tripcony was also a finalist for the Telstra Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. “The inspiration for Fuel Your Life really

28 My Weekly Preview | November 2, 2018

28.indd 1

came from looking to improve the quality of service dietitians were giving to the general public, but particularly to veterans in the community,” Mr Tripcony says. “We wanted to take a collaborative approach with other allied health businesses to allow us greater reach, and to achieve greater results and health outcomes for our clients.” This approach has seen a single Brisbane-based access point established in October 2016 grow to more than 100 sites across Australia, with Fuel Your Life having a presence in medical centres, gyms and community organisations in every state and territory except the Northern Territory. “Collaboration with other established

allied health and health providers formed a large part of our success,” Mr Tripcony says. “But our achievement with clients is what really assisted, as once they saw the results we could achieve with clients more and more organisations wanted us to work with them and their clients. I also think that largely our ability to do it successfully and not just rapidly was the creation, development, and growth of a strong management and administration team.” Fuel Your Life has 35 staff across Australia, with projections to be about 40 by the end of 2018. The business hub is located on the Sunshine Coast, where Mr Tripcony resides. “We have taken much of the year to consolidate our growth of last year, but we have still maintained a 30 per cent growth after an outrageous 800 per cent growth the year prior,” he says. “We are currently looking to expand more into different areas of New South Wales, and Victoria and looking to expand further into Central and North Queensland regions, some of which will launch before the end of 2018. “We are also looking to differentiate what we do and are looking to expand into corporate, food industry, sport and further developing our work in the aged care and NDIS spaces.” Mr Tripcony says in southeast Queensland, there are around 160 new nutrition and dietetics graduates annually and only five new graduate jobs, so private practice becomes highly competitive. “In that respect, we are providing jobs and work for more dietitians, creating a supportive workplace, helping dietitians be the best they can be and achieving great results with the clients,” he says. Mr Tripcony urges aspiring entrepreneurs to consider how much work is involved in launching a startup. “Depending on the startup and the

industry, there will be different skills required of entrepreneurs, however, there are some qualities I believe are universal and they include resilience, as you will be faced with continued adversity and as you scale, things only get more complex and more difficult,” he says. “You need the ability and desire to work harder and longer than any other human in your company. Something a bit left-field, but I think empathy is also really important. And then there is self-awareness. Knowing yourself, your skills, what you are good at and more importantly what you are weak at. This will be essential if you are to be the most successful. “Some people just aren’t built to be the boss, some people would be more successful working for someone else and not having the additional responsibilities.”

DATE CLAIMER Are you a savvy, smart, motivated woman who is looking for business support? The University of the Sunshine Coast and the Queensland Government have collaborated to organise the Women 2 Women Business Expo, which showcases a diversity of local female businesses identified for being innovative in the arts, service and food industry. Sample creative flavours, pick up a trinket or two, and get inspired by new ideas with your fellow sisters on the Coast. The fun-filled evening will provide some fabulous networking opportunities as W2W, an online platform where women can grow their business and form connections in a supportive space is launched. The event will be held at Venue 114 on November 27 from 5–8pm. Entry is free but registration is required. To find out more email intdev@usc.edu.au or to book visit eventbrite.com.au.

FRANKING CREDITS

A

s part of Labor’s plans for a ‘fairer’ tax system, Bill Shorten announced in March this year that, if elected, he would close a tax concession allowing taxpayers to claim a cash refund for any excess franking credits they hold, i.e. any credits left after reducing their tax liability to zero. This has certainly ruffled plenty of investors. Since this announcement, Labor has watered down the proposal by exempting full- and part-pensioners, as well as any pensioner who is currently a recipient of income from a self-managed super fund. Nevertheless, if enacted, the policy would reduce the value of franking credits in the hands of certain taxpayers, and could also change how they invest, e.g. diminishing the relative appeal of companies with fully franked dividends. Initially, the focus seemed to be on how this would affect investor behaviour. Lately, there has been more interest in how companies could respond, and whether this could trigger a wave of cash returns from companies in order to distribute their franking credits. However, the decision for companies is not straightforward: • There is no guarantee Labor will win the election or, if it does, that it will have the numbers to pass the legislation. Further, it could be lobbied to reconsider the policy. • Corporates need to balance competing shareholder interests. The proposed changes to franking policy primarily affect those on lower marginal tax rates, who are the usual recipients of the rebates. These investors represent a portion of a company’s shareholder register, which also includes institutions, foreign investors and others,

which are less interested in franking credits. • Long-term versus short-term benefits need to be weighed up. A share buyback or special dividend, unless sustained, might only act as a short-term boost for the firm’s share price. Companies need to consider whether shareholders and the share price could be better served by investing the capital back into the company for longer term growth. In saying that, companies with surplus franking credits and balance sheet capacity could certainly consider capital management, regardless of the threat of policy change. Some have done so, such as Rio Tinto (share buybacks), and Insurance Australia Group and Suncorp (special dividends). As it may interest our readers, we look at

“…the policy would reduce the value of franking credits in the hands of certain taxpayers…” the latest reported franking balances of companies that we cover in the S&P/ASX 100 Index to identify those with ample franking credits and the capacity to pursue cash distributions. In general, the companies that rank highly are in the resources sector – BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Caltex Australia and Woodside Petroleum. Selected retailers, such as JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and Woolworths, also fare well, while among the industrials, notable names are Flight Centre and Qube Holdings.

THE THREE PILLARS OF BUSINESS SUCCESS No matter how big or small your business is you need to think about branding, marketing and sales process. These are three big ticket items for success in business.

BRANDING A brand is what you want people to associate with your business. If you’re a sole trader then it may be associated with your “personal brand”, if you’re a small business then you want your brand to remind your customers of your product/ offering every time they see it, and if you have a larger business it is very important that your brand is prominent and easily associated with the business.

Is about getting people to come to you, or ask you to come to them, because you can offer them something they want, that is unique in price, quality, service, speed of delivery or some other unique attribute. No matter your business size, you should be thinking about how to attract your customers. I always recommend to our clients to plan how you want to market and don’t leave it to chance. Think about your target market, what you want to say to them and where you are likely to reach them and then spend your hard-earned money on what is going to give you results, and if it isn’t working, try something different.

SALES Which is the process by which you take a potential customer that comes to you, based on your brand and marketing, and convert them into a paying customer? Regardless of what you sell, there is a sales cycle, which may vary across your range. Understand the sales cycle for your products/services and focus on optimising it, and where possible, up sell other products. If you aren’t thinking about how and why people buy from you and, how to maximise results, you are not getting a proper return on branding and marketing spend.

LUXURY WATERFRONT PROPERTIES IN DEMAND It’s not just cashed up southerners who appreciate the value of our waterfront properties – locals are quick to snap them up too.

I

n a show of strength in the top-end of the Sunshine Coast property market, one of the true icons of the Minyama waterfront has sold. Ahead of its time when it was built, 15 Minyama Island took out the prestigious 1997 Mater Builder Association House of the Year for both the Sunshine Coast and Queensland. The majestic home, which is on a 1500-metres-squared north-facing block with a 32-metre water frontage, was recently sold to a Brisbane couple retiring to the Coast for

an undisclosed amount. The home is on one of only 22 blocks on Minyama Island. Platinum Properties Sunshine Coast director Steve Turner, who sold the property, says combining a marketing campaign with both advertisements and editorials in My Property Preview boosted enquiries. “There is very good interest and a high inquiry rate and most of the top end properties that were on the market have now sold. We have a distinct lack of supply for the current demand,” he says.

“We have limited supply of deep waterfront properties and they are simply not making any more. Vacant land is almost non-existent, with the last block at 138 Mooloolah Drive selling for $3 million.” Mr Turner says hotspots include Minyama, Buddina and Mooloolaba as well as waterfront at Parrearra and Kawana Island. “When it comes to top-end properties, we have a cross section of potential buyers, with strong inquiries from New Zealand, Melbourne, Brisbane and local Sunshine Coast clients aiming towards a waterfront change and boating lifestyle,” he says. “Although the southern markets have turned, the Sunshine Coast market continues to expand and develop on the back of large infrastructure projects.”

Next Property Group owner Loren Wimhurst says the top end of the property market has been strong for the past 18 months. “Most of the properties at the multimillion-dollar level are being purchased by locals who are upgrading and making the most of the values in their lower-priced properties going up. “They have chosen to step up on the property ladder because they have such an understanding of how good those waterfront, beachfront and properties with views are.” Ms Wimhurst says while there continues to be “a sprinkling” of buyers from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, it is local buyers who are snapping up and investing in blue chip properties in order to enjoy the lifestyle on offer.

LUXURY BEACH APARTMENTS From page 33

T

here is a new wave of downsizers rising in the luxury apartment market, not from interstate or international destinations, but from within the local area. Colliers International’s Dan Hirst says luxury apartments with ocean views and within walking distance of local amenities are attractive because they offer a low maintenance coastal lifestyle. The stylish properties at Rise Maroochydore Beach are proving the perfect fit for local residents looking to upgrade. The project is a boutique collection of luxury apartments located in Cotton Tree.

his coastal home is characterised by vast openplan spaces, soft natural light and a peaceful leafy outlook from most windows. In need of a little love and attention, this makes for a spacious family home to make lifelong memories. Relax on the timber deck that surrounds the pool or host friends for alfresco dining. There are two patios to choose from, plus a large open-plan living space ready for you to entertain, indulge in quiet escape or simply enjoy the sweeping views of Mount Coolum. The home features a study, media room and a large rumpus room.

3 Chadwick Street, Buderim Posiঞon is everything with Buderim real estate and the home at 3 Chadwick Street has just that. A brilliant address, right ‘on top’ with an easy walk to shops and medical plus it has a very special component that most homes lack - real character. Real character that resonates in the high ceilings, the VJ pine walls, the glorious ঞmber floors and a very private back deck for entertaining. This special family home has been lovingly restored in a period style that is ঞmeless. 3 Chadwick Street speaks to an earlier ঞme when quality and finish came with relaxed family style in a select part of Buderim.

NEW TOWNHOMES OFFER PRICE, LOCATION, STYLE Stockland’s new waterfront townhome community offers affordability, beautiful designs and a great location.

S

tockland has revealed plans for a new waterfront townhome community in an enviable location, within its popular Birtinya community on the Sunshine Coast. Overlooking a lake and parkland, Sway Birtinya is within walking distance of the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct and future Birtinya Town Centre, with the first stage of the $87-million Stockland Birtinya Shopping Centre due to open by the end of 2018. The private enclave will feature 60 designer homes ranging from one bedroom with a multi-purpose room to four-bedroom townhomes, as well as a central park for residents and a communal swimming pool with a barbecue pavilion. The project is part of Stockland’s expanding medium density pipeline of more than 3000 townhomes across Australia. Matt Patullo, senior development manager at Stockland, says the new project is Stockland’s only townhome precinct within Birtinya. It has been developed in response to the changing needs of customers. “Townhomes are becoming an increasingly popular option for first homebuyers and we’re noticing this trend among many Baby Boomers looking to

downsize as well,” Mr Patullo says. “Sway Birtinya is aligned with our national townhome strategy which will see us deliver more than 400 townhomes this year in connected, population growth corridors across the country. “This new project has been carefully designed to cater for modern lifestyles with a focus on low-maintenance, high quality living set within one of the Coast’s most vibrant new neighbourhoods. “Sway Birtinya is expected to generate

keen interest from homebuyers looking for affordable living in an enviable location.” Local architectural firm O.G.E Group has delivered an outstanding and innovative design that reflects the coastal location. Open-plan interiors and fresh colours encapsulate the Sunshine Coast lifestyle, while thoughtful designs, durable materials and easy-care gardens ensure residents have plenty of time to enjoy life. John Robertson, Director at O.G.E Group, says the design combines a coastal essence

with an urban vibe in celebration of the site’s location just south of the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct. “Life’s busy so you want to come home and relax and enjoy the Coast, whether in your private space or in the communal areas,” Mr Robertson says. “We’ve focussed very much on every home having a connection to the outdoors, and every residence having its own identity.” Prices in the first release range from $329,000 for a one-bedroom townhome, and from $625,000 for a three-bedroom townhome with lake views. The first release will be available to the public on October 27. For details visit stockland.com.au/sway, phone Nikki Scott on 0437 958 624 or visit the Sales and Information Centre on the corner of Birtinya Boulevard and Lake Kawana Boulevard, Birtinya.

with MWP’s man in the water

So last weekend was a little ordinary – or was it? On Sunday when the wind dropped, all roads led to Peregian Beach and Sunshine Beach, where waves were aplenty. Those who made it up there were rewarded for their efforts. Even Indo is having a flat time at the moment, so what is someone to do? Tell a joke is my advice. How do you make a tissue dance? Put a boogie in it. Have a great weekend with the onshore.
