FROM THE EDITOR
I
t isn’t every week that a billionaire invites you to his private island for lunch. So, when the invitation landed on my desk, I was intrigued. Dining with Sir Richard Branson? Yes, please. And, although the British mogul wasn’t in attendance, the day spent at his exclusive Makepeace Island resort was anything but boring. Enjoying a three-course lunch designed and created from local, seasonal produce, while overlooking the serene Noosa River was the perfect way to kickstart my summer. Summer is one of my favourite times of the year and to celebrate we have devoted this week’s magazine to this festive and fun-fuelled season. In our feature story, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane chats with Trevor Berrill, an award-winning private consultant in sustainable energy system design who has partnered with Sunshine Coast Council. Is a solar-only future realistic? Trevor believes so. You can read the story on page 10. From technology to trends, in My body we share the latest beauty looks that will take you from a casual day at the beach through to a glam summer’s night out. Summer is also a great time to refresh on sun safety and in our health and wellbeing feature we share the latest skin cancer research and remind readers of the all-important slip, slop, slap mantra. Plus in local news we share our four favourite ways to spend a summer’s day here on the Coast. Enjoy!

QUICK CHAT
FIT & FAB Where do you live? On four acres at the bottom of Mount Ninderry in Maroochy River. First job? Glen Dell Fashion Boutique in Ayr. What are you currently working on? Renovating our home, spending time with my family and writing. Your family includes? My husband David, sons Mack and Chase and daughter Sylvie, along with a menagerie of animals. First car? Daihatsu Sirion. It was the cutest little bubble car. Favourite book? Mao’s Last Dancer by Li Cunxin always stands out. My favourite coffee table book is Helmut Newton’s SUMO. If your life was a book, what would be the title? A Little Bit Fancy, A Little Bit Not. What are you reading now? Winging It by Emma Isaacs. Favourite song and why? You Should Be Dancing by The Bee Gees. I love ’70s music.
dancer
BIO Rockell Williamson-Rudder launched the workouts of US fitness brand Xtend Barre in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Before this she danced at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, toured Australia with Grease and was in various TV commercials and a show on SBS. After more than eight years based in Las Vegas where her husband was the technical director for Human Nature, she is excited to be living on the Coast.
Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? Flying to Paris to audition for the Moulin Rouge. I got the job and started rehearsals 10 days later. At 18 years old it really paved the way for the rest of my entertainment career. Your greatest regret? I try to learn from things rather than having any regrets. However, I regret that I don’t speak French fluently. After two years living in Paris my French is embarrassingly weak.
“Being our authentic selves, even if that means you don’t always fit in, is so important”
What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? Season two of Making A Murderer. It’s intriguing. Looking at the legal and justice system in the US and listening to Steven Avery’s defence team at work is very interesting.
Rockell Williamson-Rudder
Best day in your life and why? I have five. The day I married my husband, the births of our three kids and the day my family and grandparents were able to come and watch me perform in Grease in north Queensland.
Best advice you’ve been given? If there isn’t any risk it’s not worth doing. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? I love Nambour. There is an urban heartbeat and soul in Nambour that I love. I’ve lived, travelled and worked in many cities all over the world. Travel allows you to take your blinkers off and look at things or places with perhaps different eyes and a very open heart. I also love the square at Peregian Beach. If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? A direct flight from the Coast to Townsville so my family could visit without going via Brisbane.
What achievement are you most proud of? Taking what was a small US franchise and growing it to more than 30 international franchise studios and more than 60 licence facilities in my time with Xtend Barre . You are happiest when? I have quality time with my family and best friends.
What frustrates you the most? Judgement. We are all so quick to judge. Being our authentic selves, even if that means you don’t always fit in, is so important. It’s something my family and I work through every day. How do you deal with your frustrations? I like to ride my horse if I need to clear my head. I also have kinesiology if I need a reset for my mind and heart. If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Don’t pluck your eyebrows pencil thin from 1997 to 2002. That, and start investing in some real estate as soon as you can. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Finish our reno and fly my family and besties to our place for a week-long party. Also contribute to the arts programs at my local public schools. Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Skim latte.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the Sunshine Coast has an average of around nine hours of sunshine through the summer month of December. There’s no better time than now to get outdoors and enjoy the beaches, parks and hinterland walks. But, don’t forget to slip, slop, slap.
Earlier this month, the pearl pendant of French queen Marie Antoinette sold for $44 million at a jewellery auction in Geneva. Someone has deep pockets!

FEATURE STORY
THE FUTURE’S BRIGHT Is a solar-only future possible? Yes, say sustainable energy experts and the Sunshine Coast Council, which is leading the way in renewable energy creation. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
F
ollowing the release of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission report on electricity prices in August this year, electricity retailers have been offering some impressive discounts for those who shop around. But what if I told you that you could save $1000 a year just by changing the way you access your electricity? I’m talking about solar power. One in four Sunshine Coast residential properties already has a photovoltaic (PV) solar system, so it’s not a new concept for the region. In fact, local governments around the country are looking to the Sunshine Coast Council after it became the first regional council to offset its entire electricity consumption from renewable energy generated at the country’s first council-owned utility-scale solar farm. A council spokesperson says in its first year of operation, the 15-megawatt Sunshine Coast Solar Farm at Valdora generated more than 25,100-megawatt hours of energy, prevented around 20,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from entering our environment and delivered $1.7 million in savings against business-as-usual costs for electricity supply. Solar has long been embraced by the Sunshine Coast community and according to the Australian Photovoltaic Institute there were 47,356 systems installed on 41 per cent of dwellings as at September 30 this year.
10 My Weekly Preview | November 30, 2018
10.indd 1
A council spokesperson says if you add all of the rooftop solar PV systems and the solar farm together, the region would have a solar power station that was 180 megawatts in size. Trevor Berrill is an award-winning private consultant in sustainable energy system design, and he says this hypothetical power station would generate enough energy to power 40,000 homes for a year.
feed-in rebate for every kilowatt of power they receive from your rooftop. Whether your system is set up to use the PV system’s energy in the home or send it to the grid is largely based on your feed-in tariff. If, for example, you were receiving the maximum 44 cents that is common in systems installed before July 2012, it would make more economic sense to send it to the grid and buy back power from your energy retailer at the rate of 17 cents a kilowatt.
“It’s possible for an entirely sustainable future for electricity generation. It is technologically and economically possible to do it” Trevor Berrill
Mr Berrill, who founded TREVolution, has joined forces with the council to share his expertise through its Save With Solar campaign, which will highlight the benefits of solar to residents and business owners. So how does solar work? The simplest explanation is that it harnesses energy from the sun and converts it to electricity that can be used directly in homes or sent to the power grid, where energy retailers offer a
Those who are on a lower feed-in tariff rate of seven cents would be better off using their solar power in the home as it is cheaper than buying power. Mr Berrill says either way, solar will always “place you ahead”. “A typical home saves about $1000 a year with a four- or five-kilowatt system if they are using between 18 and 25 kilowatt hours a day of energy,” he says. “Homes that
directly use their solar get the most out of it if they shift their appliance use to daytime hours, between 9am and 3pm, and this can be done by using the timer function on appliances. “Peak solar generation is between 12pm and 2pm, which also coincides with when we typically see a peak in demand for air-conditioning on a hot afternoon, but it doesn’t reduce the peak in demand that occurs in the evenings between 6pm and 8pm. It is there that battery systems become useful.” Residential battery systems allow you to store excess solar power generated during the day to be used once the sun goes down. According to SunWiz, the first consultancy firm to audit the home battery market in Australia, more than 6500 households nationwide installed a solar battery in 2016, which was a staggering 13 times the amount of the previous year. Mr Berrill says that number has since skyrocketed, with around 20,000 battery systems installed across the east coast of Australia alone in 2017. He says this rapid increase is largely due to the cost of battery systems coming down. “The people who get the most benefit from battery systems are larger homes rather than small users of energy,” he says. “The payback period for a typical solar system is three to five years, whereas when you add in a battery storage system, it goes out to seven to 10 years, which is myweeklypreview.com.au
26/11/2018 3:44:12 PM
FEATURE STORY roughly the life of the battery. “Most people who install battery storage are doing it for reasons such as being able to displace energy use at night and providing back-up power in the event of a storm blackout.” Mr Berrill says while it’s possible to design a solar and battery combination that allows your home to become independent of the grid, it is not a financially viable solution for those who have access to the existing electricity system. As of June 28, 2018, the Queensland Government began to offer interest-free loans for solar, and recently announced it will also offer rebates for battery storage for households and small businesses as part of the Affordable Energy Plan. With the costs of establishing new solar and wind-farm power generation stations also becoming much more attractive to the companies controlling power generation infrastructure than refurbishing or replacing ageing coal-fired and gas power stations, a future where the country is run on sustainable power is looking ever more likely. It’s something Mr Berrill has dreamed of since he began working in renewable energy four decades ago. “When you look
at places like Saudi Arabia and Dubai, they are starting to install large-scale solar systems and the price is so cheap due to the solar resources that they have,” he says. “When you look at places like Longreach, for example, it is right up there with the best solar radiation levels in the world. “We’re definitely seeing the Climate Council working closely with local councils and communities to put in place community-owned solar farms right around Australia now. “We know it’s possible for an entirely sustainable future for electricity generation. We have done extensive computer modelling of the whole east coast power network. It is technologically and economically possible to do it and it is already happening. AGL are building a 450-megawatt wind farm in Coopers Gap and a 250-megawatt wind farm has been installed on the Atherton Tableland. “There are numerous large-scale solar farms being built right along the whole east coast, some combining battery storage or pump storage, where you use excess power to pump water up through a reservoir and down through an electric turbine to generate power into the evening.”
Mr Berrill says these are exciting and innovative times for Australian companies, which are “leading in many ways”. The Sunshine Coast’s solar farm has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards since completion, including the LGMA Queensland 2018 Sustainability Award for Excellence, LG Professionals Federation Environment and Sustainability Award, National Awards for Local Government Boosting Productivity through Infrastructure Award, and the Australian Regional Development Environment and Sustainability Award 2018. A council spokesperson says the awards acknowledge the forward thinking move by the council to proactively take control of its electricity supply to combat rising electricity costs. “Council remained committed to delivering the solar farm project during a period when national investment in electricity generation was being seriously damaged by absence of clarity on emission and energy policy,” the spokesperson says. “It has always been council’s view that this project is good for the region. We are now encouraging the community to look at how solar can benefit them.”
It pays to shop around when choosing an electricity supplier, as some retailers have been offering some great discounts to gain customers. But with some offering discounts on the total cost of a power bill and others applying discounts only to your power usage, for the consumer it can feel a bit overwhelming choosing a new supplier. When people with solar systems then try to compare the various solar feed-in rebates and charges on top of that, it makes it harder to compare apples with apples. Mr Berrill says because south-east Queensland has such a competitive
market, it is possible for those on a lower solar feed-in tariff to seek a higher rate. Comparing what is on offer is made infinitely easier thanks to a government website that allows you to input your current charges and get a comprehensive look at what else is on offer. Visit energymadeeasy.gov.au to see if you can get a better deal today.
SOLAR SYSTEMS Mr Berrill says it is important to use a reputable business when looking to have a new PV solar system installed. He recommends doing some research and selecting a business that has been “in the
BY THE NUMBERS The 57,850 panels at the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm get 7.1 hours of sunlight on average each day and generate enough electricity to power 5000 homes. In its first year of operation, the solar farm offset 118 per cent of the Sunshine Coast Council’s electricity needs.

game” for more than five years, has a good reputation and can provide you with details of previous jobs they have done. Mr Berrill urges property owners to get at least three quotes and to be wary of cheap solar systems. “A good figure to aim for is $1 per watt, so $5000 for a five kilowatt system after any government rebate would be a middle of the range system,” he says. “At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and if you are offered a really cheap price, they have to be taking shortcuts somewhere. Often this is in the quality of the equipment or the installation process.”
The Deloitte Economic Cost of the Social Impact of Natural Disasters report found the escalation of more extreme weather events linked to climate change in Australia will cost the economy $33 billion by 2050. If you added all the solar rooftop systems in Queensland together they would have a capacity of 2200 megawatts. This is larger than Queensland’s largest coal-fired power station, which is the Gladstone station. It has a capacity of 1680 megawatts. Bloomberg New Energy Finance forecast there will be more behind the meter PV capacity in 2050 than the current total 54,000 MW capacity of the National Electricity Market.

Kawana Shoppingworld unveiled its first-class cinema complex and dining precinct on Thursday. The multi-million-dollar redevelopment, which began in January 2017, has remained on track with a pre-Christmas opening. The centre now offers the Sunshine Coast’s first Gold Class and V Max experience, as part of Event Cinemas 6000-metres-squared multi-screen complex. Planet Arcades, a family entertainment centre that caters for everyone, will also be opening. In the coming few weeks the centre will also welcome Lone Star, P’Nut Street Noodle, Peak Thai, Pomodoro and The Good Place to complete the new entertainment and lifestyle destination for the region. Kawana Shoppingworld centre manager Claire Torkington says everything has been carefully curated to create an engaging family-friendly offering of new and modern choices in dining and entertainment not previously available on the Coast. “The new precinct will truly enhance the centre as a bustling and vibrant community hub for locals and visitors alike,” she says. SUNSHINE COAST HAS THE SMARTS The Sunshine Coast has made the Smart21 Community list for the fifth time in six years, recognising our role as a leader in innovation.
T
he Sunshine Coast has joined regions and cities from around the world on the Smart21 Community list for 2019 – the fifth time in six years the region has been recognised as a global leader in smart technology and innovation. The announcement was made by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) at its fifth annual Next Gen Tech Conference held in New York. The Sunshine Coast is one of only three Australian communities in the Smart21 for 2019 and remains in contention for the prestigious designation of an Intelligent Community Top7. Mayor Mark Jamieson says to be named a 2019 Smart21 community is an outstanding achievement and testament to the Sunshine Coast Council’s commitment to the delivery of a healthy, smart, creative region. The Smart21 are selected from hundreds of submissions, which are reviewed over an eight-month process. Each submission must provide data to demonstrate the delivery of initiatives aligned to the six intelligent community indicators – broadband, knowledge workforce, innovation, digital equality, sustainability and advocacy. “Being part of the Smart21 demonstrates that we are delivering world-class initiatives, across all of the six intelligent community indicators and ones that will benefit the community well into the future,” Mayor Mark Jamieson says. “The International Broadband Submarine Cable, which is set to be operational by mid-2020, is just one example which will further assist us to build a healthy

BiG Day In is one of the council’s innovative programs entrepreneurial ecosystem. “The 2019 theme of infinite learning is consistent with our objectives for our region. The skills required in the workforce are changing and to meet the changing landscape there needs to be programs that can support the young and old as they manage their way through that transition. “As a council we support a number of initiatives including Level Up, RoboCoast, Mayor’s Telstra Tech Awards (MTTA) and GovHack.
“Our highly successful Sunshine Coast Regional Innovation Pipeline Team (SCRIPT) program incorporates the Smart21 principles to drive economic outcomes that will support our existing innovation ecosystem to grow exports, create new jobs and attract talent and business expansion to the region.” Local entrepreneur and founder of YOUtax, Emma Baxter, said thanks to the SCRIPT, and the Level Up program, her company was providing extra value to clients and servicing them in a more simple and convenient way. “Our company has implemented a number of digital systems since starting the program which has grown our capacity to offer a superior online service for our customers while keeping operating costs to a minimum,” Ms Baxter says. For Jessica Poole, Anto Thomas and Ray Steele, from Nambour College, the MTTA program provided a platform to develop their concept of Driving Mate, which offers incentives for people to put their phone away behind the wheel. The team received a Highly Commended in the awards and, as a result, had the opportunity to meet with entrepreneur and investor Steve Baxter and discuss their vision. Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre CEO Mark Paddenburg says being a Smart21 community helps reinforce the Sunshine Coast’s strong reputation as a dynamic hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. “Our region has a unique entrepreneurial ecosystem where industry contemporaries collaborate, and where innovation, new ideas, entrepreneurs and startups are actively supported and encouraged,” he says. “And with the backing of international awards like this, we will continue to grow.“

FISHERMAN SPEAKS OUT: ‘DON’T CULL SHARKS’ IMAGES: SUPPLIED BY MR ROBERTS
After his frightening encounter with a tiger shark, Moffat Beach fisherman Kyle Roberts is calling for calm and a sensible approach to sharing the marine environment with sharks and other potentially deadly creatures. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
Left: Kyle Roberts. Above: The tiger shark’s bite marks and his partially submerged kayak.
S
unshine Coast fisherman Kyle Roberts gained national media attention when he had a close encounter with a tiger shark while kayak fishing one kilometre off Moffat Beach on November 15. The incident came after a number of incidents in Airlie Beach prompted authorities to call for a shark cull, but Mr Roberts is calling for common sense to prevail. A radiographer/sonographer who works at a local practice, he favours respect for marine creatures over knee-jerk reactions. “Ocean safety and being prepared is the responsibility of anyone who enters the ocean, whether it be swimming, surfing, fishing or boating,” he says. “We need to be aware that all of us share the Coast’s beaches, estuaries, rivers and ocean with marine life and animals including jellyfish, stingrays, stonefish and sharks can be encountered. “Destruction of marine animals is an unacceptable means of mitigation and control. Information, education and understanding is the only way forward as
interactions between people and marine life become more common with the growth of our region.” A third generation fisherman, Mr Roberts grew up on the Capricorn Coast and has been offshore kayak fishing for seven years. When he launched solo from Moffat Beach in his Hobie Revolution 13 kayak, it was his 78th trip. “I trolled two pilchards targeting mackerel from the Moffat Beach shark buoys and caught a small hammerhead shark and released it. Prior to use, all baits were individually stored in a sealed watertight plastic container with no burley ever used. “I reset the troll lines and kept cruising for 15 minutes. With no prior warning, I got hit hard from the right side of the kayak, which displaced it to the left, rolled it over and threw me into the water a couple of metres away from the kayak. “I swam back to the kayak with it still on its side, grabbed on and looked over it to the underside to see a tiger shark still attached, crunching the plastic. I estimated its length at
four metres, which was later confirmed by a 47-centimetre bite circumference. It stayed attached for another few seconds with me on one side of the kayak and it on the other. It then rolled off to its right and brushed past my legs with its body and tail. “Once the shark was detached, it allowed the kayak to capsize and I climbed onto the underside of the capsized kayak and got my arms and legs out of the water. I then barrel rolled the kayak the right way up and sat back in the seat as the kayak started to fill with water and sink from the bite holes.” He grabbed his waterproof radio and climbed to the nose of the kayak. “The kayak then sank quickly to a 45-degree angle under the water, coming to rest with the front hatch and nose still clear of the water.” Mr Roberts made a VHF call on Channel 9, making contact with another kayaker, Josh Ball. He then changed to Channel 16, the emergency channel, and made contact with the Caloundra Coast Guard. “As I waited for rescue, I looked down through the water and could see fish circling below but couldn’t see the tiger shark.” Contrary to media reports, the tiger shark did not circle him. He waited 30 minutes, shaking due to shock. The first radio confirmation of visual sighting came from lifesaver Jacob Thomson
on top of Moffat Headland with binoculars. The first physical contact came from Josh Ball, followed seconds later by lifesaver Graham Sharry. He was followed closely by lifesaver Nathan Steer, both on jet skis, with Dave McLean coordinating deployment of the rescue helicopter if required. By lunchtime, the water police had retrieved the kayak. “Upon reflection, I feel the shark most likely mistook the silhouette of my kayak for a whale calf, given the whales’ recent migration past the coast,” Mr Roberts says. “After the shark had let go, it displayed no further interest, but I also made a conscious effort to minimise any splashing and unnecessary movement after the initial contact in an effort not to reinterest the shark.” Mr Roberts, who has a wife and two young children, has every intention to return to offshore kayak fishing. “My wife understands that fishing is a big part of my life and being a fisherman is ingrained in who I am.” Despite this, Mr Roberts is fully aware of the potential danger he was in. “I will be forever grateful to the Caloundra Coastguard radio operator for the rescue coordination and the Kings Beach lifesavers Graham Sharry, Nathan Steer, Jacob Thomson, Dave McLean and fellow kayaker Josh Ball, who all disregarded their own safety and came to my aid knowing a large shark could still be in the area.”

he legacy of a Coast man who is described by his family as the “saltiest of souls” is living on in the smiles of the young people who are experiencing the thrill of surfing. Tyler Kennedy tragically died while on holiday in Bali last year and after considering a number of ways in which his memory could be honoured, Mr Kennedy’s family established a surf school for underprivileged Sunshine Coast kids and teens under the name SalTy Souls Legacy. Mr Kennedy’s older sister Tamara Smith says the six-week Standing Tall program is aimed at getting kids aged between five and 18 out into the water to surf and heal both mentally and physically through the power of the ocean. Ms Smith says she knew they were on the right track when the 16 available positions filled up just hours after the six-week program was announced. There is now a waiting list for the first program for 2019. The wider community has shown its support for the program, with local surf school coaches donating their time to teach the students. Around 95 surf boards, 30 boogie boards and boxes of rashies, wetsuits and sunscreen were donated to the charity by Coast residents during a collection day in August. These boards have been refinished by The Factory Surfboards in Caloundra and given to the program participants to keep, so they can continue to enjoy the surf long after the program has finished. “Every board that is donated is given a registered number with a link to a message for the kids, so they can see the depth of the amount of love that has gone in to giving them this opportunity,” Ms Smith says. “Tyler learned to surf on a pre-loved surfboard and he saved every cent to get his first custom board from The Factory.
“As a grom, he used to go there and watch them make boards. It’s all connected in this wonderful way and [SalTy Souls] has created purpose for us as well. “It sounds crazy, but it’s like he’s left us a project and it really has made it all worthwhile. Our little motto is, ‘his soul, our hearts’ and I feel like it’s steered by him and we are getting guided by him on what to do.” Ms Smith says she is proud to see how the youngsters are progressing through the program and working through their individual challenges in the process. A number of participants were actually afraid of the surf at the start of the program and they are now standing tall on a board with the rest of the group. It costs $250 to put one young person through the program and SalTy Souls is seeking financial donations or business sponsorships to help as many children as possible. As a new charity, they are also seeking volunteers to help with IT support and admin duties as well as photographers to capture the magical moments experienced by the children when they are out on the water. SalTy Souls Legacy will have another collection day at Mudjimba Beach Park on December 8 from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The charity is seeking donations of secondhand foam boards, fibreglass boards, rash vests, wetsuits, sunscreen and leg ropes. Ms Smith says any excess donations will be passed on to families in need or other Coast organisations that host surfing opportunities for young people with disabilities or who are financially disadvantaged.

MY OPINION
IT’S BINGE & SPLURGE SEASON
POOLS, TRAINS AND PLANES
Sami Muirhead has had enough of dieting and being sensible with money and is ready to let her hair down this Christmas.
D
id you hear about the English mother-in-law who is charging her family $30 per head to join the clan’s family Christmas lunch? I know this time of year is crippling with costs but come on, how can you charge your kids or your mum to join the Chrissy table? We have been trying to budget this year and we have been trying to lose weight. We have been boring pains in the neck and I am pretty sure our credit card limits have never been leaner and my bottom has never been wider. It is as if the more we try, the more we are jinxing ourselves. So it is time to let our hair down. I plan to spend and eat and drink like a drunken sailor. I am out for a binge, baby! Christmas Eve is all about two things in our house: and it is not Santa or the birth of Jesus. We do like both of those guys but the thing we get really silly about are Christmas carols and nibbly-platters. We start inhaling our nibbly platters mid-afternoon. It is a marathon not a sprint when it comes to the sport of devouring camembert cheese and haloumi cooked to a squeaky perfection on the barbecue. We have old-school gherkin dip and French onion dip and of course fruit we only buy at Christmas, including mangoes and cherries. And what would a Coast platter be without Jatz bikkies? All the shops have the fancy biscuits now with pumpkin seeds, cranberries and goji berries, but nothing
beats a good old-fashioned Jatz cracker. The gorge-fest of nibblies is followed by a hot meal. We are nearly ready to explode by the end of it, but we do the only sensible thing: force down plum pudding and brandy custard before retiring to the lounge to eat our body weight in fruit mince pies and wash it all down with port. Then we wake up to Christmas Day, after nearly killing ourselves with greed the night before. When it comes to spending on gifts, our country will tip the scales at over $11 billion this year. Women have most likely started shopping and our big weekend of spending will be the December 15–16, when more than half the females in the country will do some form of Christmas shopping. Apparently one in four blokes leave shopping until a few sleeps before Christmas. It must be so stress-free being a male. You just have to make sure there is cold beer and the TV bill has been paid. I think my husband occasionally gets stressed if he thinks he has missed the cricket, or I tell him he is not allowed to wear his going-out thongs when we are in fact, going out. The Salvation Army is running its wonderful Christmas Tree Appeal with Kmart this year and you can help a family in need by buying them a little gift and popping it under the tree or making a donation. It is a great way to teach kid to share the love. I hope your plans are starting to take shape for Christmas 2018 and do not forget to buy yourself a couple of packets of Jatz.
Richard O’Leary has good things to say about our local pools and trains, but says he’ll never fly Tigerair again after a bad experience.
F
or the first time this year, I heard Christmas carols playing in a shop, which probably means I don’t get out much. It did get me thinking about the festive season though, and before I knew it, I was contemplating what to serve on Christmas Day. That’s just how my brain works. My family ditched hot roasts on steaming summer days long ago – which usually sees us serve prawns, cold cuts and salads. I think tapas could be a nice change for this year, and to get in the spirit, I’ll serve a few light dishes this week rather than just one heavy meal. To start I offer you a liquid refreshment with a dip in one of our region’s excellent public pools. My family has just resumed its relationship with the eye-reddening chlorine and the sizzling yet soothing concrete surrounds. The one just down from my place in the hinterland is an oasis in the summer months. Credit to the council for keeping so many of them open and I’d encourage more Sunshine Coasters to dive in after work or school. Remember the old saying about community infrastructure – use it or lose it. If a splash in the local has whet your appetite, may I suggest a train? There are plenty of people out there who will knock public transport on the Coast, but as someone who has to sit in many a carriage these days, I have been pleasantly surprised by their cleanliness,

cost-effectiveness and punctuality. My only gripe is they always seem to run on time, which means I never make that connection at Eagle Junction which leaves three minutes before my AirTrain arrives. The last plate I have for you looks all right, but be careful to not bite off more than you can chew. I offer you a flight on Tigerair – the carob of the airline industry. It looks like chocolate but tastes like... carob. Please don’t be fooled by the tempting prices, this airline will leave you with a terrible taste in your mouth.
“Tiger Airways – the carob of the airline industry” In my most recent experience, they cancelled the flight a few hours before departure on a Sunday night, and couldn’t offer me another one until the Wednesday. To be fair they did offer to refund my money... in 10 days time. After much complaining, they promised to give my own cash back within 48 hours. Of course that didn’t happen. But I’m nothing if not persistent and I kept pushing until they coughed up and my hard-earned was finally returned to my account – you guessed it, 10 days after the cancelled flight.
Richard O’Leary is a journalist, a political adviser and a father who knows there’s a deeper meaning to life, but struggles to find it.

NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS FOR MISHA
Misha Prior’s studies with TAFE Queensland landed her a role launching the careers of local creatives. Now, the 29-year-old mum of three is making noise on the Sunshine Coast music scene with her own business. After taking three years out of the workforce to raise her three young children, Misha Prior found herself with the daunting prospect of having to start her career all over again. Having worked in business administration since undertaking a school-based traineeship as a teenager, Misha had worked hard to climb the corporate ladder and wasn’t keen to settle for just any entry-level job. Realising she needed to update her skills to make herself more appealing as an employee, Misha enrolled in a Diploma of Business through TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus, and while adding ‘study’ to her to-do list was difficult, she rediscovered her love of learning and business development.
"The opportunities that came from my time with TAFE Queensland were invaluable, but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t apply myself 100 per cent."
“As much as I love my munchkins, being a full-time mum is the hardest job of all and I needed a day off. And TAFE, for me, was my ‘day off’ – it gave me muchneeded brain stimulation and provided opportunities for adult conversation,” Misha said. “I knew it was going to be a struggle juggling three kids, a husband and full-time study, while trying to maintain something that resembles an actual life, which is the reason I opted to enrol in face-to-face study. “I was absolutely astounded by the level of support the teachers gave their students – so much so, the online course didn’t seem like a crazy idea anymore. In fact, I enjoyed the course so much, I enrolled in the online delivery of the Diploma of Leadership and Management before we’d even graduated. “We made learning really fun at home and the kids just came along for the ride. They had their cardboard ‘laptops’ and we had study parties.”

It was during her studies that Misha discovered a flair for project management, thriving under the pressure of a practical assessment presented to the class by local community group, Nambour Alliance. Tasked with developing the framework for a new event the group was proposing, Misha and her classmates worked out the logistics of bringing it to life by applying the knowledge they’d learned in class to a real life project. The NamJam Busking competition was a music festival designed to shine a light on local musical talent and put Nambour on the map – and in 2017, under Misha’s watchful eye, it did just that. “I obtained the Project Manager role for NamJam as a direct result of studying
“It has been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest, but it’s an awesome industry to work in, with a heap of amazingly creative and supportive people to engage with,” Misha said. “I really enjoy working with such amazing and talented musicians, and it’s great to be able to give them opportunities to reach new audiences and develop as a professional.” Having graduated from her second diploma at the end of 2017, Misha is continuing to push herself by undertaking a Bachelor of Business Management. But she remains grateful to TAFE Queensland for helping her relaunch her career and is now determined to return the favour, allowing Diploma of Business students to gain valuable experience by assisting in the planning and operation of NamJam each year.

TAFE Queensland were just too good not to run with.” Inspired by the opportunities she was receiving to coordinate the entertainment for a number of events on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, Misha decided to take advantage of the professional relationships she’d developed and officially launch her own music management business – Mute Music Management. Now in addition to managing NamJam, Misha looks after the bookings and logistics for music acts on the rise.
“I think real life project experience is super valuable, especially in courses where you don’t typically get to have a lot of practical experience,” Misha said.
“The opportunities that came from my time with TAFE Queensland were invaluable, but I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t apply myself 100 per cent,” she said. MAKEPEACE ISLAND GETS A MAKEOVER Sir Richard Branson’s heart-shaped Makepeace Island has been renovated and My Weekly Preview was at the launch to see it in all its glory.
4 SUMMER ESCAPES
I
f you want to holiday like the rich and famous, then look no further than Noosa River. British billionaire Richard Branson’s recently renovated Sunshine Coast ‘home’ was launched to the public last week and My Weekly Preview was granted access to the resort ahead of its opening to the public. The heart-shaped exclusive Makepeace Island has hosted the likes of pop star Justin Bieber, will.i.am, Guy Sebastian and Natalie Basssingthwaighte and is now being marketed as a destination for corporate events, multigenerational family holidays or a swish couple’s getaway.
But, the price tag isn’t for the faint-hearted – it will set you back between $10,000 to $25,000 a night. This will get you exclusive use of the resort, which features a lagoon-style multi-level pool, tennis court, fully-stocked bar, giant chess set, luxurious villas, chef and staff. Makepeace Island sits on 10 secluded hectares and was styled by globally-recognised designer June Robinson Scott who created a sophisticated and stylish space with a modern Balinese twist. For photos of the launch visit myweeklypreview.com.au.
While we can’t all escape to Sir Richard Branson’s island, there are still plenty of terrific things see and do in our bountiful region. Here are four of our other favourite ways to spend a Sunshine Coast summer’s day. 1. Explore Point Cartwright on foot – start the day with a relaxing breakfast picnic at La Balsa Park and then take a walk along the path and over the rocks and grassy area that leads up to the Point Cartwright lighthouse. 2. Buderim Forest – the 45-hectare oasis with its rainforest and cascading waterfalls might be located in the town centre, but it feels much further away. Take a picnic, have a barbecue or simply enjoy a dip in the falls. 3. Kondalilla Falls – A visit to this cool mountain retreat will make you feel miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Even on the hottest day of the year, this popular swimming hole will still be cold! 4. Beach day – You can’t go past a fun day in the sun at one of the region’s family beaches. Our picks? Kings Beach, Golden Beach and the patrolled beach at Mooloolaba’s spit. Remember to slip, slop, slap.

BUILDING TOLERANCE MAY BEAT PEANUT ALLERGY WORDS: Tom Pilgrim, AAP
NEW TEST TO DETECT MELANOMA
A
ustralia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. More than 2000 Australians die from the disease each year. Researchers are hoping to make a breakthrough in identifying the early signs of Australia’s most common form of skin cancer but the test is years from going public. Last month AAP reported that abnormal skin tissue and blood samples would be tested for early signs of melanoma as part of trials over the next 12 months, conducted by Melbourne company Geneseq Biosciences and Australian Clinical Labs. The non-invasive blood test, Melaseq, is designed to detect the genetic fingerprint of active melanoma, a cancer which affects two million Aussies in their lifetime. However those at risk of the disease still face a lengthy wait of up to several years until the still-experimental testing regime could prove helpful. The testing needs to be proven effective and meet necessary guidelines. Geneseq founder Ryan Van Laar told AAP there was no other solid tissue, blood or genetic detection tests available to identify early-stage skin cancer. It was difficult to forecast the cost of the test but Dr Van Laar said it needed to be cheap and widely available. Melanoma is the fourth most common cancer in Australia and claims the lives of about 1500 people each year. About 14,000 cases were diagnosed in 2017. Doctors currently rely on checking a patient’s skin to see
any changes in existing moles or spots before making a diagnosis. Earlier this year, life insurance company TAL released a report that showed nationally, 71 per cent of 1000 people surveyed have not had a professional skin check in the past year, while 39 per cent of Australians have never had one. Queenslanders are the best when it comes to skin checks, the research shows, having the least number of respondents who had never had one (26 per cent).
HOW TO BE SUN SMART 1. Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible. 2. Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30+ (or higher) sunscreen. Put it on 20 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours afterwards. Sunscreen should never be used to extend the time you spend in the sun. 3. Slap on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears. 4. Seek shade. 5. Slide on some sunglasses – make sure they meet Australian standards. 6. Remember to book in regular skin checks. Source: Cancer Council
Peanut allergy sufferers have been given new hope following the results of a landmark study. Children diagnosed with a severe allergy took part in a trial where they were given increasing amounts of peanut protein over a year. The trial found that participants not normally able to tolerate exposure to even a tenth of a single peanut could eventually cope with two whole peanuts. It is believed that by gradually building up tolerance levels, sufferers could protect themselves from accidental exposure. Researchers from Evelina London Children’s Hospital and King’s College London took part in a study which suggests immunotherapy treatment, used to treat pollen and bee sting allergies, could protect people from life-threatening reactions. The PALISADE study recruited nearly 500 children aged four to 17 from various countries to take part in the largest-ever peanut allergy treatment trial. Participants were split into groups who received either a capsule of peanut protein or a dummy powder. Doses were gradually increased every two weeks for a period of six months, before continuing on a “maintenance dose” of peanut for a further six months. The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found about two-thirds (67 per cent) of children and teenagers could tolerate at least 600mg of peanut protein, compared with four per cent of participants on the placebo. Professor George du Toit, paediatric allergy consultant at Evelina London and the study’s chief investigator, said: “Peanut allergy is extremely difficult to manage for children and their families, as they have to follow a strict peanut-free diet. “Families live in fear of accidental exposure as allergic reactions can be very severe, and can even lead to death. Until recently there has been nothing to offer peanut allergy sufferers other than education around peanut avoidance and recognition and self-treatment of allergic reactions.”

ALZHEIMERS VACCINE COULD SOON BE TESTED A vaccine against Alzheimer’s has come a step closer to reality after scientists succeeded in preventing the build-up of toxic brain proteins linked to the disease. Experiments on mice showed that the DNA vaccine, injected into skin, could potentially delay the onset of Alzheimer’s with no serious side-effects. The findings, published in the journal Alzheimer’s Research and Therapy, could pave the way for clinical trials with human patients, scientists report. Two kinds of toxic protein or protein building blocks are thought to play a key role in Alzheimer’s – beta-amyloid and tau. Beta-amyloid accumulates in sticky clumps in the brain and is a characteristic hallmark of the disease seen in patient post-mortem examinations. Tau is a protein which produces destructive “tangles” within nerve cells. Some research suggests that the two are linked, with beta-amyloid promoting the formation of tau tangles. The new vaccine contains DNA coding for a segment of the beta-amyloid protein
OMEGA-3S CAN CUT PREMATURE BIRTHS: STUDY
Increased intake of omega-3 fats during pregnancy can reduce the risk of premature birth, new research has found. Conducted by the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute with Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital and the
building block, or peptide. In the study the vaccine triggered an immune response that not only led to a 40 per cent reduction in beta-amyloid build-up, but also reduced tau formation by 50 per cent. The research was conducted on mice which were genetically engineered to develop a rodent equivalent of Alzheimer’s disease. Lead scientist Dr Roger Rosenberg, director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Centre at the University of Texas in the US, says: “This study is the culmination of a decade of research that has repeatedly demonstrated that this vaccine can effectively and safely target in animal models what we think may cause Alzheimer’s disease. “I believe we’re getting close to testing this therapy in people.” Co-author Dr Doris LambrachtWashington, another member of the University of Texas team, says: “If the onset of the disease could be delayed by even five years, that would be enormous for the patients and their families. “The number of dementia cases could drop by half.” – AAP
University of Adelaide, the study shows daily omega-3 supplementation can cut the risk of birth before 37 weeks by 11 per cent and the risk of birth before 34 weeks by 42 per cent. “This is an extremely promising finding because we now have strong evidence omega-3 supplements are a simple and cost-effective intervention to prevent premature birth, which we know has serious health implications,” institute deputy director Maria Makrides says. “Even a few extra days in the womb can make a substantial difference when it comes to your baby’s health.” The study suggests women expecting a single baby begin taking a daily dose of omega-3s at the 12-week stage of pregnancy. The study, known as the Cochrane Review, assessed the combined results of 70 trials involving almost 20,000 women around the world. - AAP

MENTAL WELLBEING
The power of paying attention At Sunshine Coast Grammar School we use contemporary research in neuroscience to inform our learning. We know that an active mind is fuelled by an active body and we are well aware that good sleep, healthy diet and physical exercise contribute to building an active mind. This year I have been sharing with the students the work of Dr John Medina, a molecular biologist who studies how the brain sciences influence the way we work and learn. The framework he presents is called the 12 Brain Rules. Earlier this year, I shared with our secondary students that according to Dr Medina, most of us do more forgetting than remembering. In his brain rules, number four is about paying attention. In this hyper-connected world and at the pace we are all living, we believe that in order to achieve everything we need to get done, we
need to multitask. We think we are getting more done, but as educators we do question: is the quality being eroded at the expense of the quantity? Dr Medina states that brains cannot multitask when it comes to paying attention. This attentional ability is different to being able to ‘multitask’ eating and reading at the same time, or walking and talking. At key times during the school year when students must give their full attention to completing a task and meet a deadline, they can find that paying attention is challenging. You must actively and consciously turn your mind to that task, forsaking all distractions. This requires discipline and acknowledgment that there are more distractions than ever before and we must actively reduce the unnecessary to achieve what we have originally set out to accomplish. Dr Medina says if we are interrupted it takes 50 per cent longer to accomplish a task and we can make 50 per cent more errors. When we apply this knowledge outside the school environment, the notion of not paying attention can become dangerous. Consider the dangers of texting and driving. The active mind is a powerful tool for great learning, discovery and when we work intentionally on building growth mindsets, anything can be possible. A failsafe way to lose weight With summer here and New Year’s resolutions just around the corner, weight loss is at the top of many people’s list. Whether you try the latest fads of paleo and keto diets or intermittent fasting, weight loss still remains the same as it has for millennia and will continue to do so. Energy balance underpins all weight loss programs. Be in a negative energy balance and you’ll lose weight, be in a positive balance and you’ll gain weight. Put simply, burn more than you consume and you’ll lose weight. Where the complexity lies for many who’ve been down the sometimes long and frustrating weight loss pathway, is determining your individualised metabolism (the rate at which your body expends energy or burns calories) and how many calories you should consume per day. You see, if you eat too much, you’ll be in a positive energy balance, eat too little and you may slow
down your metabolism and place yourself further away from your negative energy balance goals. Thankfully, with the advancement of technology we can now easily calculate your ideal daily caloric consumption through both resting and exercise metabolic rate tests. Once performed, these short and non-invasive tests can then be used to provide precise dietary and exercise guidelines to place you in the optimum energy balance for sustainable

ith fond memories of “epic crowd surfing” at The Sands Tavern, watching other locals like The Butterfly Effect, Cog and Melodyssey rip it up on stage, it’s no wonder the guys from Dead Letter Circus are pumped to perform on the Coast once again. With nearly half of the band, which consists of Kim Benzie, Luke Williams, Stewart Hill, Clint Vincent and Luke Palmer, growing up on the Coast, there is a real hometown vibe when they take to the stage. The guys are riding high off the release of their fourth studio album, which they decided to self-title. Dead Letter Circus’ first EP, released in 2007, was also self-titled. When asked why they decided to recycle the title, Mr Benzie says, “It felt like the themes we were singing about came back around full circle to the EP themes. “Fix yourself and then fix the world, stories of the battles you go through internally. “The second reason was the epic vibe we have as brothers. This is actually the third
album for this line-up and we’re all just growing closer as friends and musically.” When Mr Benzie reflects on how much they have achieved in the 11 years between self-titled releases, he admits they never had dreams of “big things”. “We just wanted to make music that made us feel something and didn’t sound like anyone else. So when it blew up, life just became super surreal and it’s been an incredible ride,” he says. “Getting to be the guys who channel that epic music is a beautiful thing; it truly means something to people and is the soundtrack to the more intense moments in life.” The Dead Letter Circus Album Tour will hit the Sol Bar on December 7 at 8pm. Tickets are available at solbar.com.au.

from Blue and Sentimental and Sassafras Quartet (pictured). Blue and Sentimental are a contemporary jazz duo from Sydney featuring guitarist Luke Chapman and Emily-Rose Sarkova on accordion and vocals. Inspired by a love of gypsy jazz, folk, fusion, classical and all that’s in between, their music is alive with the new sounds of originals as well as sentimental salutes to the old classics. They have performed with the likes of Monsieur Camembert, the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra and James Morrison. Formed in mid-2015, Sassafras Quartet has now earned a reputation as one of Perth’s premier gypsy jazz groups. The quartet’s repertoire features gypsy jazz classics from Django Reinhardt, Biréli Lagrène, Gonzalo Bergara, Les Doigts de l’Homme, a selection of original arrangements of classic and lesser-known jazz standards, as well as some original works. Check out Manouche Fest on December 1 from 2pm to 6pm at The Bison Bar, Nambour. Tickets are available at trybooking.com/YYUQ or at the door.

Jazz Manouche is a term for gypsy jazz music. Birthed in Paris in the 1930s, it was started by legendary gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt from the Manouche gypsy clan and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, who incorporated the swing beat with their Romani-style music. Jazz Manouche features virtuosic guitar playing often incorporated with double-bass, violin, accordion or clarinet and those interested in experiencing the powerful genre can do so when the second Manouche Fest comes to the Sunshine Coast on December 1. In an afternoon of gypsy jazz, you will get swept away with toe-tapping music
READER’S CORNER FOUR RESPECTABLE LADIES SEEK PARTTIME HUSBAND Author: Barbara Toner Publisher: Penguin RRP: $32.99 Reviewer: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane In a modern world where women are empowered to do anything and everything men can, it was a sobering experience to pick up this book, which is set in the New South Wales town of Prospect in 1919. The war is over and everyone who was
going to die from the flu has done so, but there’s a shortage of husbands and women in strife will flounder without a male to act on their behalf. This enlightening tale follows the very real problems being faced by four women – a widow who is drowning in the debts her late husband left behind, a young woman who is raising her two brothers and fighting to take ownership of the land they live on, a woman whose husband refuses to take on a thieving manager who is stealing from the family’s store and a housekeeper who is desperately looking for her fiancée. Together, they hatch a plan to hire a shared ‘husband’ who can navigate his way to a solution to their problems.

BRAISED CELERY WITH ONION, TOMATO AND PANCETTA
recipe IMAGE: WILLIAM MEPPEM
INGREDIENTS • 2tbsp coconut oil or good-quality animal fat • 2 large onions, chopped • 200g pancetta, chopped • 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced • 2tbsp tomato paste • 125ml (½ cup) dry white wine (such as chardonnay) • 700g celery stalks (about ½ bunch), cut into 6cm lengths on the diagonal (reserve the leafy tops and leaves for another use) • 400g whole peeled tomatoes, crushed • 250ml (1 cup) chicken or beef bone broth, vegetable stock or water • 1tsp dried oregano sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • Finely grated zest of 1 lemon • 1 handful of basil leaves METHOD Heat the oil or fat in a large, heavy-based saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and pancetta and saute for 10 minutes, or until the onion is starting to caramelise. Next, add the garlic and tomato paste to the pan, stir well and cook for two minutes, or until fragrant. Pour in the wine, then cook until the liquid has almost evaporated. Stir in the celery, crushed tomatoes, broth, stock or water and dried oregano and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover with a lid and cook for 40 minutes. Remove the lid and cook for a further 20 minutes, or until the celery is tender and the sauce is reduced by half. Season with salt and pepper. To serve, sprinkle on the lemon zest and basil. This recipe serves four.
COOKING TIP Pete Evans says this is his take on a traditional pasta dish with sauce. “My version replaces the pasta with braised celery, which is infinitely tastier and more nutritious. I have used pancetta, but you could also try bacon or, if you like, bone marrow, salami, blood sausage or any other sausage to add a little richness to the dish.”
This recipe features in Mr Evans’ latest recipe book Eat Your Greens, published by Plum, RRP $39.99.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
With this week’s sun/Mars/Neptune connections, you’re in the mood to act on your hunches and follow your dreams! But, don’t get too carried away, make dubious claims or promise more than you can actually deliver.
Close relationships will be confusing, as Mars and Neptune dampen your confidence and retrograde Mercury muddles your mind. Thank goodness Mercury (your ruling planet) goes direct on Friday, so communication should gradually improve.
This week’s planetary patterns maximize your natural charm, but beware false flattery. Stand firm and do your best to make your Libran lifestyle a true reflection of your core values and personal beliefs.
With vivacious Venus visiting your sign (until January 7), you’ll feel unusually flirtatious as you charm the cynics and dazzle the doubters. You’ll find it’s easier to get what you want if you stop being a control-freak and try a double dose of diplomacy instead.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Mars revs up your reckless side; Neptune scrambles your common sense; and retro Mercury confuses communication. So, expect a few tricky days when you could feel discouraged. Energy levels will also be low, so look after yourself.
Do you feel overlooked and under-appreciated? Avoid being cranky and critical. With the sun, Jupiter and retrograde Mercury in your seclusion zone, success has been slowed down, but that doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen.
Steer clear of making important business and financial decisions, as Mars and Neptune distort your perspective. From Friday onwards, a fresh chapter opens up involving your peer group, so make sure you choose any new friends wisely.
This week, you’ll feel confused and discouraged, but escaping into a fantasy world won’t make problems magically disappear. As the week progresses, do your best to be a firm and focused fish, as you find creative solutions to current challenges.

BRUCE WILLIS FINALLY SELLS IDAHO SKI HOME
IMAGES: TOP TEN REAL ESTATE DEALS.COM
B
ruce Willis has shown that even mega movie stars can experience troubles with moving their prime real estate. The on-screen action hero finally sold the Idaho home he listed in 2011. Though he bought it in 2003 for less than its final sale price of $5.5 million, a sales record in the Hailey, Idaho area, it was an excruciating drop from its original list price of $15 million. In the past 15 years, Mr Willis rebuilt the main house, added a guest house, gym, streams and ponds and paid years of property taxes, so whether he made profit, broke even or took a loss is not known. The home is on 20 acres between Hailey and Ketchum on Flying Heart Lake and the compound is completely private with thick woodlands, multiple ponds and streams. The 780-square metre home is a six-bedroom, seven-bath log house with heated terraces and balconies. Inside there are vaulted ceilings, views of Flying Heart Lake and the mountains, three fireplaces, and large gourmet kitchen. The 204-square metre master suite has a fireplace and sitting area with jetted soaking tub, granite steam shower and dressing room with built-in dressers and shelving.
Excellence in Local Knowledge
p: f: e: w:
Outside is a resort-size heated swimming pool with waterfalls and slides. Skiing, hiking, biking, live music and a theatre are only minutes away from the gated, secure property. No stranger to collecting exceptional real estate, Mr Willis has been buying and selling homes for years. He has owned a number of homes in the Los Angeles area, Idaho, apartments in Manhattan and most recently purchased a mansion in Bedford, New York. As more and more of Hollywood’s actors segue into buying and flipping real estate, Mr Willis is near the top of the list and in recent years, he has been gravitating towards more real estate activity on the East Coast.

Well here we go. We are now at the pointy end of the season with Julian an outside chance to claim a world title against Medina and Toledo. Hopefully, they score contestable swell. Starts next week but sadly is only streamed through Facebook. They are trying to buy their way out of losing followers. This weekend seems onshore, which is expected, so get what you can. Trivia – the peregrine falcon can fly at a speed of 320 kilometres an hour. Imagine if you crossbred with a magpie. Man, that would hurt. Have a great weekend peeps.
