Every year, thousands of Australians are the victims of graffiti attacks. Until now, there have been limited options for people in their war against graffiti. Dulux has come to the rescue with a DIY coating that enables graffiti to be cleaned off repeatedly with high-pressure water. Suitable for painted and unpainted surfaces including timber, concrete, brick and render surfaces, Dulux Precision Anti Graffiti Coating is easy to apply. One lucky reader will win four litres of the coating valued at $290.

FROM THE EDITOR

S

ome time ago I read a quote that has stuck in my mind and, given the celebration of cultural diversity that Australia Day should recognise, I thought it timely to share: “There is very little difference in people, but that little difference makes a big difference. The little difference is attitude.” Being Australian means something different to each and every one of us. Taking into account that our country is considered to be one of the most ethnically-diverse nations in the world, it’s no surprise. We come from varying backgrounds, which means differences in culture, tradition and religion. Let’s celebrate that, and respect each other as we do. For me, Australia Day is traditionally a day of reflection, acknowledging this great land, its people and also my own history. It is also a day for family and friends. There is nothing more I love than surrounding myself with good company, sharing food, laughter and stories. If you have scored the hosting role this weekend, and are in need of a few tips to cook up a feast, you may be interested in this week’s cover story. Local chef Damien Grimes has taken time out of his busy schedule to share his top ideas for creating a spectacular barbecue. It’s just one way you may choose to enjoy the weekend ahead. Until next week, take care.

QUICK CHAT

A DOG’S LIFE Where do you live? The beautiful Mary Valley. First job? Working in my parents’ pet store. What are you currently working on? I am working on growing and developing my new business. Your family includes? My husband Brendon, and a mini zoo of six dogs, five cats, lorikeets, peacock/hens, chickens, ducks, water hen, cow, miniature donkeys, goats and sheep. First car? 1988 Toyota Cressida. Favourite book? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. If your life was a book, what would be the title? What Is She Up To Now? What are you reading now? I’m really enjoying reading The Accidental Entrepreneur by Janine Allis. Favourite song and why? I don’t really have one. My favourite singer is Billy Joel, and early this year I flew to Chicago to see him live. It was a dream come true.

Katie James BIO

Animal lover Katie James has recently opened b’ARK Pet Boutique, Grooming and Barkery, which is on Maroochydore’s Ocean Street. Ms James also operates Katie’s Ark Luxury Pet Retreat, which offers doggy day care and grooming services on a luscious eight acres in the Mary Valley. Ms James previously worked in finance, but left her job and took a risk to start a new business in a field she loves.

What achievement are you most proud of? I only completed high school to Year nine. I am very proud of what I achieved. You are happiest when? When I am at home with a nice cold cider, relaxing with my animals and husband. What frustrates you the most? My husband. We are now working together in our businesses and that comes with daily challenges. It’s not easy working and living together. And I’m sure he will tell you the same thing about me.

“I always think there is a reason why something didn’t go to plan and I learn from it”

What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? I don’t get much of a chance to watch TV. The only TV shows I must watch regularly are EastEnders and Coronation Street. This is from the days of living in the UK when I was in my 20s.

er m o o r g t pe

Your greatest regret? I always think there is a reason why something didn’t go to plan and I learn from it. Otherwise, how do we grow in life?

How do you deal with your frustrations? Count to 10, then if that doesn’t work keep counting, until it does.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? I really enjoyed my late teens to late 20s. I travelled a lot, and had a lot of fun doing it. If anything, I would say don’t waste time on boys – there is plenty of time to settle down and do that.

Best advice you’ve been given? Know your worth. A boss said this to me many years ago and I have never forgotten it.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Richard Branson, Kylie Minogue and Leonardo DiCaprio. I love how Richard has never given up and that is why he is so successful. I loved Kylie from back in the days when she was on Neighbours working as a mechanic, showing us that females can do anything. And Leonardo because he was my crush growing up.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Have a water park for dogs and make the Coast more dog friendly.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would pay off our debt, go on a great holiday overseas and bank the rest to go towards a early retirement.

Best day in your life and why? There are so many times in my life I have thought to myself how fortunate I am to have this life. The most recent moment would be opening my pet retreat business and having my first fur-guest arrive for their holiday.

NRL or AFL? Neither. I am a union fan. Go the All Blacks!

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Does kicking the ball with my dogs count?

MARCH “If I can’t be loyal to the leader then my judgment is I resign.” Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton pledges allegiance to then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull five months before he challenged him for the top job.

“Turnbull is just a speedbump on the road to the Trumpification of the modern Liberal Party that a Dutton leadership would finalise.” Wayne Swan sums up the sentiment surrounding the Dutton-led Liberal leadership challenge.

OCTOBER MARCH “I know I’ll regret this for the rest of my life. I’m absolutely gutted. I hope in time I can earn back respect and forgiveness.” Australian captain Steve Smith takes full responsibility for the ball tampering scandal in Cape Town.

APRIL “One wants to be free to choose the death when the death is at an appropriate time.” Australian scientist David Goodall, 104, hoped his decision to end his life in Switzerland would lead to changes in Australia’s voluntary euthanasia laws.

However you choose to celebrate Australia Day, there is one thing that tends to take centre stage – food. From barbecues to meat pies, slow-roasted lamb, grilled prawns, oysters and even the humble pavlova, there are many delicacies that the land Down Under is known for. Here on the Sunshine Coast we have an abundant supply of fresh, local produce. Dig in!

CONTRIBUTING EDITOR Damien Grimes – Sunshine Coast Hotels, group executive chef Mr Grimes has been cooking for nearly 25 years, having started his apprenticeship in Ireland before moving to London to work for the Conran Group. Travelling to Australia 17 years ago, he began working in Sydney before relocating to the Sunshine Coast and taking on the group executive chef role five years ago. The self-confessed and locally-recognised foodie shares his tips for creating an Australia Day culinary feast.

12 My Weekly Preview | January 25, 2019

12.indd 1

Mr Grimes says: Growing up, food at home was simple and fresh and with both parents working full-time, we were encouraged to help out and cooking just seemed to come natural to me. Coming from a small country town, the product was all local and of great quality, which is something that I didn’t realise then, but has greatly influenced how I approach food now. When I cook for friends, food generally comes off the barbecue served family style, platters down the centre of the table, whole fish, joints of meat, salads, grilled vegetables. Food that can be eaten with your hands, picked up with pieces of bread, passed and shared between people. This Australia Day, I will be on the seafood bar shucking oysters at Brightwater Hotel. We are lucky here on the Coast to have an abundance of highquality seafood sourced locally.

COVER STORY

TOP What’s the key to producing a good Australian barbecue? Here are Damien Grime’s tips. 1. Always start with a good clean barbecue. 2. If using wood or charcoal, start your barbecue early and let the flame die away, leaving you with a nice white coal. This will give an even heat to cook on. 3. Make sure your meat or fish is out of the fridge at least half an hour before cooking. Bringing the product to room temperature helps it to cook evenly. 4. Only turn on one side of your barbecue. Brown or seal your meat or fish on the hot side of your barbecue and leave it to cook slowly on the other. Your meat will cook through slowly with the ambient heat, giving you more time to get organised and socialise with your friends. 5. Select the right cut of meat for the job. If you want something quick and easy, choose smaller leaner cuts of meat, lamb chops, rib steaks or snags. If you have plenty of time, marinate a joint like lamb or pork shoulder for a low slow cook. 6. Don’t forget the veggies. Barbecue is not all about the meat. Fresh vegetables simply chargrilled over wood or coals and served with lemon juice and olive oil are a fantastic addition to any barbecue. 7. Remove the guesswork and purchase a thermometer. It’s the simplest and safest way to tell when your meat or fish is cooked properly. 8. Season your meat properly, be generous with the salt when cooking on the barbecue to help bring out the flavour of the meat. 9. When buying meat, remove any packaging and leave uncovered in the fridge overnight to dry a little. The meat will form a much better crust when grilling. 10. Always rest your meat or fish before cutting and serving. This allows all the juices to absorb into the meat and will give you a succulent product.

DID YOU KNOW? Among the fresh seafood, snags in bread, lamb burgers and pavlova, we’ll be making way for one of the nation’s favourites – the good old lamington. The Aussie fave was invented more than a century ago. It was named after Lord Lamington who was Queensland’s governor at the time.

BARBECUE LAMB RUMP WITH CHARGRILLED VEGETABLES, TAHINI AND YOGHURT INGREDIENTS • 4 lamb rumps • ½ teaspoon ground cumin •½ teaspoon ground coriander • Olive oil METHOD Mix spices with olive oil and rub into the lamb rump. Cook lamb rump fat side down on the barbecue until fat is crispy and golden. Brown the lamb on the rest of the sides and move to the cooler side of the grill Cook slowly until pink and tender (48 degrees for medium rare). Leave to rest for at least 10 minutes before you slice.

VEGETABLES Squash, broccolini, spring onion, capsicum, zucchini. Cut the vegetables into large chunks. Season well and drizzle with olive oil. Chargrill on barbecue until tender. YOGHURT DRESSING • 150ml Greek yoghurt • Juice and zest of 1 lemon • 50g of tahini paste • ½ bunch mint chopped • ½ bunch coriander chopped Mix all ingredients together and season with salt and pepper.

Add some fresh chopped chilli if you like a little heat. Lay grilled vegetables on the bottom of your plate and cover with the sliced lamb. Drizzle with the yoghurt dressing and extra virgin olive oil. Recipe courtesy of Sunshine Coast Hotels.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT LAMB The lamb should have a nice even layer of white, flaky fat. It should be firm to the touch, have no smell and the meat should be a dull red colour.

The intention is to spell out the message ‘Renewable Energy Now – Make The Switch Now – 100% Renewables… Imagine’ to send a strong message to politicians of every persuasion. The Coast has been allocated the word Renewable and people wanting to contribute towards making this human sign should gather at Peregian Beach at 1pm on February 2. Rain or shine, the event will happen.

The 2019 Murphy Homes Maroochy Classic Carnival will be the event’s eighth successful year, thanks to a great partnership between Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and Murphy Homes. Held on the Australia Day long weekend, Maroochydore beach will be packed with more than 600 participants competing at the carnival all day on January 26 and 27. Each year, the event attracts an impressive line-up of competing Ironmen and Ironwomen, including Shannon Eckstein, Matt Poole, Matt Bevilacqua, Harriett Brown, Courtney Handcock, and Maddy Dunn. Maroochydore SLSC competitors this year include 18-year-old Tiarnee Massie, 19-year-old Matt Palmer, and his 16-year-old brother Adam Palmer, who last year won the U17 Ironman in Wollongong at 15 years of age. With a prize pool of over $35,000 on offer, it is the biggest carnival run by the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and has the largest prize money for a single event, attracting some of the biggest names in the sport.

COAST BUSINESS LEADS DIGITAL REVOLUTION

$53 MILLION

A Sunshine Coast tech company leading a digital revolution that could change the way people shop online has been awarded a significant Federal grant. Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien announced $616,888 to Alkira Software, which is at the forefront of the next wave in digital technology – online transactions using voice. Mr O’Brien says voice transactions are being touted as the next big thing in the online world, enabling people to securely pay bills and shop without typing. The Coolum-based company has developed an app called Voingle, which is to be used on phones, computers and with smart speakers and has applications well beyond assisting the vision-impaired.

As we welcome the region’s newest citizens in invitation-only events across the region on Australia Day, there are plenty of ways all 356,900 or so residents can celebrate on January 26. Australia Day breakfasts will be held at 7am at Montville Village Hall and the Middy’s Carpark in Buderim, from 7.30am to 10am at Kawana Waters Uniting Church, with flag raising ceremonies at 7.30am at Lions Park in Kings Beach and Maleny Showgrounds. The Hinterland Aussie Day Expo at the Maleny Showgrounds will run from 8.30am to midday and the Marcoola Rocks event will be at Felix Parry Park from 7am, with fireworks at 7pm.

The 13th annual Suncoast Spinners tournament wrapped up with Queensland team Feed the Heat narrowing out New Zealand club team Canterbury in an international clash. There were a host of achievements gained by Suncoast Spinners players throughout the tournament, including premier grade bronze being awarded to Andrew Lewis, Dave Kelly, Hannah Dodd, Steven Elliott, Tom Holland Roach, Shannon Buxton and Jake Fulwood. In the A Grade, it was Mitchell Duncan who was awarded the All Stare Five and Peter Liddy received it for B Grade.

Patients and local health workers on the Sunshine Coast will benefit to the tune of $53 million over three years for community mental health services, along with a change to the funding model. The new funding and reformed structure will ensure security for both jobs and services. Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace welcomes the announcement and says the funding will be provided through the Government’s innovative 31 Primary Health Networks (PHNs). It is estimated that one in five people in Australia experience a common mental disorder each year.

PLANS FOR STATE-OF-THE-ART VET CLINIC Well-known Sunshine Coast veterinarians Sebastian Olasek and Annabel Shepherd have revealed plans to build an innovative ‘fear free’ veterinary clinic at Stockland’s Aura Business Park. The ground-breaking concept in veterinary health care originated in America and aims to reduce an animal’s fear and anxiety around veterinary visits through measures including keeping cats and dogs completely separated from each other. Dr Olasek says the concept has only recently been introduced to Australia and this will be the first clinic of its kind on the Sunshine Coast. Businesses in the first stage of the business park is expected to open around the middle of the year. myweeklypreview.com.au

SUN SHINES ON OUR TOURISM SECTOR The Sunshine Coast has outperformed its southeast Queensland neighbours, with a huge rise in tourism. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

ourist attractions across the Sunshine Coast are ready to catch their breath after a highly successful summer school holiday period and if the latest national and international visitor survey results are anything to go by, they will be in for many more busy holiday periods in the near future. The Sunshine Coast has outperformed its southeast Queensland neighbours in tourism growth, experiencing the best increase in visitor numbers, according to the latest National and International Visitor surveys.

The National Visitor Survey (NVS), which was released earlier this month, showed a record 3.5 million domestic visitors travelled to the Sunshine Coast to the year ending September 2018, generating record expenditure of $2.4 billion, a rise of more than 18.4 per cent. Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey showed more than 319,000 visitors arrived from abroad, also breaking a record with visitors increasing by 8.5 per cent and spend increasing by 5.3 per cent, totalling $248.2 million. In comparison, the Gold Coast only experienced a one per cent increase in

international visitor numbers. Sunreef Mooloolaba owner Dan Hart says bookings across the business, which has been expanded to include hire equipment and Whale One’s cruises, have “certainly been very strong so far this season”. “Forward bookings right through to our whale watching season from June to November and our Australia’s first Swim with Whales experience from July to October are also very strong. We are also seeing a lot more people this summer visiting the shop and the revitalised Wharf Mooloolaba.” Meanwhile Sea Life Sunshine Coast general manager Quinn Clarke says the attraction has had a “bumper year”. “It’s great to see the Sunshine Coast grow at such an impressive rate and we welcome it’s continued growth over these next 12 months,” he says. The Wharf Mooloolaba co-owner Dirk Long says the precinct is having “a fantastic summer.” “You can certainly see the increase [in visitor numbers] and it is very satisfying to see everyone enjoying the precinct, taking advantage of the great activities, shopping

and wide selection of dining available. It’s great to see people creating their own day at the Wharf incorporating the things they love.” Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the increase in visitation recorded in the national and international surveys along with the anecdotal evidence from local businesses and attractions is the result of highly targeted and effective campaigns both in Australia and overseas to attract new visitors and encourage past visitors to return. “The performance out of New Zealand has been outstanding, along with continued growth from the American, Asian and European markets, and the fact that they are spending more reflects the diversity of attractions available across the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “This is in addition to particularly strong growth from our traditional domestic drive market, complemented by the wide range of direct flights into Sunshine Coast Airport. Qantas will shortly add an additional daily-direct service from Sydney, which will help boost leisure, corporate and conference travel even further.”

PROFILE

VALUING OUR VETS Their love of pets and compassion for animal owners is all in a day’s work for the Sunshine Coast’s busy vets, but it’s a demanding job that involves long hours and plenty of heartbreak, local vet Matt Rosen explains. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

D

r Matt Rosen would like pet owners to know something about vets. They are not in it for the money. And they are not magicians. The director of Animal Emergency Service at Tanawha says vets do the job they do because they love animals just as much as you do and they are often heartbroken when, despite their best efforts, they lose an animal. After recent media reports highlighted the problem of clients using emotional manipulation to avoid paying their bills, Dr Rosen is keen to clear up some of the misconceptions people have about vets. “We don’t do it for the money; we do it for the love of animals,” he says. “It really infuriates me when I hear that phrase, ‘you’re only in it for the money’. It’s a common thing we see. When you give people a price for treatment in the hospital, they’ll turn around and say, ‘look, I can’t afford that’. We’ll offer them finance, we’ll ask if they have someone who can help them out. They can get quite angry, quite narky and throw the ‘well you’re just in it for the money’ routine.

Dr Rosen isn’t just surrounded by animals at work. He is the father of six children who also love animals, and the family owns a menagerie of cats, dogs and snakes. His kids have pet pythons with names like Medusa, Stitch and Coco. They love walking around the house with their snakes coiled around their necks and showing them off to their friends.

“You can’t help getting involved with people and getting close to an animal”

“We are not in the highest paid profession. If we’re in it for the money, we’ve made a stupid choice. We do it because we love our job and we love the animals,” he says. “Unfortunately there are no subsidies under Medicare. If you go through the emergency system and

you’re human, you don’t see the charges.” Dr Rosen often sees people on online community boards discussing where to find the cheapest vets. “It upsets me because it demoralises our profession. As vets, we need to value our profession and the services we provide.”

Dr Rosen has been running the practice at Tanawha for five years and says a standard shift is 12 hours, but some shifts can last up to 20 hours. On a weeknight, he might have up to 19 animals to treat, with a number of emergencies often arriving at once and needing critical care, which can be highly stressful.

PROFILE In a typical shift, he does everything from an initial consultation to performing emergency CPR and surgery, running tests like X-rays, ultrasounds and blood tests, stemming bleeding and dealing with distraught pet owners. There is a high rate of suicide in the profession and Dr Rosen says there are complex reasons for this. “A combination of factors can lead to suicide in our profession,” he says. “There’s a lot of emotional stress. We perform a lot of procedures that don’t end well and animals end up being euthanased. “We suffer compassion fatigue. We’re very emotive people. You can’t help getting involved with people and getting close to an animal. When it doesn’t go well, you suffer that fatigue. “We also have to deal with the finances with people. We’re clinicians, we’re not finance people and talking about money can be stressful, especially when you first graduate. “We are also a very high functioning group – you have to have high grades to study veterinary science. A lot of people have underlying mental health disease. Someone with a pre-existing mental illness might suffer compassion fatigue and then they have access to medications to facilitate [suicide]. “When I was working at our Underwood

practice, we had a vet manager, she was brilliant. From an external point of view, we never knew anything was wrong until we got the call that she had committed suicide. That caused a lot of grief. The flipside to that is we celebrate her anniversary every year by having a lawn bowls day to raise money for the Black Dog Institute.” Dealing with difficult customers is just one of the many stresses a vet faces, and fortunately, the people who make the job impossible are in the minority. Dr Rosen says most clients are polite and appreciate the vet has done everything they can do. The majority of animals Dr Rosen treats are dogs and cats, but there are also plenty of rats, guinea pigs and snakes – which he says have personalities and charms of their own – and he says people get just as attached to these animals as dogs and cats. “It seems silly but it can be rewarding when a client sends you a thank you note after you’ve done everything you can and you’ve had to euthanase their animal. Or if we’ve done something very minor and we don’t believe we’ve made much of a difference and they thank us, that’s really satisfying. It is a big job and amongst all the flak we get, we do get a lot of positivity come through.” If you are in need of support, phone Lifeline 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

Australia Day Celebration challenging, and non-consensus, developments – such as central banks raising interest rates faster than expected, or geopolitical tensions resurfacing – such developments could affect the likes of navy shipbuilder Austal and gold producer Newcrest Mining. Capital intentions – Cash levels in corporate Australia are near-record levels and we expect share buybacks, particularly among the large capitalisation stocks. Our preferences within the banks and mining sector – ANZ and Rio Tinto – are based on a combination of their valuation and capital management potential. Separately, we also see Ansell as low growth, but its net cash position offers opportunities. Election tailwinds – A federal election looms in May. It is too early to predict the outcome, but investors are nervous about its implications for the equity market given the adverse repercussions for a number of Australian companies from most policies proposed so far by the major parties. These include Royal Commissions, electricity price regulation and negative gearing changes. We anticipate a shift in rhetoric as the election approaches, however, towards more expansionary and nation-building policies, given the headroom in the federal budget. The potential areas of focus are likely to be personal tax cuts, incentives for small- to medium-sized enterprises, health-care funding, infrastructure projects and renewables. Potential beneficiaries in health care include Integral Diagnostics, while in infrastructure, Boral and Qube Holdings are potential winners. In the renewablesrelated areas, Service Stream could be a beneficiary.

entral to our macroeconomic outlook is a view that the cycle is maturing, which warrants more caution, but a global recession appears unlikely in 2019. Preparing for higher volatility therefore influences some of our stock preferences. At the same time, without a recession, some cyclical stocks appear oversold in the latest market swoon. In Australia, the looming federal election could also have a bearing on certain stock or sector performances. Some of our preferred themes and investments are outlined below: Oversold cyclicals – We don’t believe a global recession will develop in 2019. Some cyclical stocks, in our view, have unduly sold down on this concern. Below is a shortlist of companies where consensus earnings estimates for fiscal 2019 have been raised in the past 12 months – due to an acquisition, for example – but the shares have still fallen. If management can meet these earnings expectations, we believe the price falls will have to reverse. On our list are Aristocrat Leisure, Origin Energy and Reliance Worldwide. Volatility vigilance – At the same time, we are cognisant that the cycle is ageing. This late (but not end-of-cycle) stage is usually characterised by higher volatility, which warrants having some relatively defensive exposures, for example, AusNet Services and Viva Energy REIT. It also includes considering whether portfolios are positioned to accommodate some more

Five tips for finding the right home builder A new year brings many things to us. Hot cross buns on Boxing Day, Easter eggs on New Year’s day. And for a few, the new year brings with it the opportunity to finally dive into building that new home you’ve dreamed about for some time. must-haves and nice-to-have items so you don’t get caught up in the marketing spin and ‘limited time offers’.

e caught up with David Phillips of Total Creative Constructions to discover five key tips you must keep in mind when looking for your new home builder.

W

Don’t get blinded by the shiny objects – We’ve all heard the saying ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ and it’s especially true for your new home. If you are visiting the display village, ensure you go with a clear list of

If it’s not written down it never happened – Most often you’ll be dealing with a sales consultant who is employed to get your deposit and sign the initial paperwork. The most common complaint is that people don’t get what they were expecting. Make sure that anything the consultant tells you (promises you) is put in writing on official company stationery or email. This will ensure you have a clear understanding of the inclusions from the start. The proof is in the pudding – With online review sites being ‘sponsored’ by builders, it’s little comfort to read the reviews anymore. Furthermore, many builders incentivise clients to write nice things about them. Make sure you ask to speak to at least three previous clients who have built the same home design you are

considering and don’t be afraid to ask what they really thought of the process. You’re buying the floor plan, not the promotions – Many people come to us because they settled for a floor plan that did not suit their needs (see point 1!). Remember to stay focused on getting the plan that is right for your family and don’t be distracted by the bells and whistles that get you excited today. When you have to live in your home every day, you’ll soon forget the nice finishes if it doesn’t function the way you want it to or have enough storage for you and your family. Clarity is king – Make sure you know exactly what you are allowed to be involved with when it comes to your build. Most builders now place strict rules around site visits (only allowing you to visit at milestone events like slab and frame). It’s your home and you are paying the bill, so don’t be afraid to build a

communication plan with your chosen builder. Above all else, remember that your new home build should be a collaboration between your ideas and the builder’s talents. Keep it fun and make sure you get to speak directly to the person who’ll be building your new home before you sign on the dotted line.

MY OPINION

TIDYING UP WITH SAMI MUIRHEAD

A RAZOR SHARP STATEMENT

Sami Muirhead loves the Netflix show Tidying Up With Marie Kondo, but she has her own method of tidying up, which involves keeping everything.

Richard O’Leary says if you were offended by the controversial Gillette ad, you may need to have a good hard look at yourself.

A

re you one of the tens of millions who have watched the new Netflix hit Tidying Up With Marie Kondo? It follows the bestselling book (10 million copies sold and growing by the hour) that sparked a revolution of basically folding clothing as if it is some new Olympic sport. The Japanese decluttering expert is an evil genius because she has us all buying her book, which tells us to get rid of books and all our other stuff. The premise is you only keep things in your life that “spark joy” when you hold them in your hands. I am obsessed with the TV show, because I am somewhat of a hoarder. Not that bad type you see on A Current Affair. My house is light and airy and bright and I certainly take the rubbish out daily, but I just seem to collect too much stuff. I have 200 teacups. I have about the same number of rabbit ornaments. Do not ask me how many Camilla kaftans I have, as not even my husband knows the answer. I have tried to change and I would like to feel less stressed by debt and the heaviness of ‘stuff’. This new TV show is awesome because the perfect Ms Kondo with her perfect straight bob enters houses that are busting with all sorts of stuff and she bows and nods and does a polite little Japanese jig when I am pretty sure in her head she is thinking, ‘You dirty Western consumerist slobs! You should burn this trashcan of a

house down.’ We then get to see the couples go on a cleansing journey that usually results in some relationship counselling and a breakdown, because no one on this damn planet can origami clothing the way Marie Kondo can do it! The thought of picking up every single item I own is somewhat daunting. I can tell you my babushka dolls from Russia spark joy, as do every tiny pair of shoes my kids have ever worn. My baby’s first curls, teeth, bibs, booties, overalls and beanies all spark joy and I certainly need to keep every magazine with any member of the Royal family on the cover. I would not be keeping any electricity bills. The whole dirty fridge could be tossed out along with my Spanx undies, the treadmill, mirrors and definitely the scales. Ironically, the KonMari system requires you to buy more stuff – tiny cute little boxes to store your belongings. While the rest of us are floundering trying to get rid of stuff, the 33-year-old is accumulating a fortune and and it is rising rapidly, with more books due to be released in 41 countries and an army of consultants around the globe. I am pretty sure I could shock Ms Kondo into the Sami method of cleaning. We have three ways to deal with stuff. The first way is to hide it under the lounge. The second way is to hide it under your bed. And the third way is to just put it off and settle in to watch Marie Kondo conquer the world by rolling up one T-shirt at a time.

M

y son turned to me and said: “We are in history now. In 20 years’ time this will be history.” I didn’t know where this thought had come from, but I couldn’t have agreed with him more, and his observation came back to me this week as a furore erupted over Gillette’s new ads. For those who haven’t seen them, the most masculine of brands jumped into the #MeToo space with an ad encouraging men to be the best men that they can be. It begins with men behaving badly, but then switches to how they should act. It includes scenes of a young man calling out his mate for using sexist language towards a young woman, a father breaking up a fight between two boys rather than accepting the mantra of other dads that “boys will be boys”, and another bloke stopping a pack of bullies from bashing a kid. I was so moved by the ad that I immediately shared it on my Twitter account (my dog’s twitter account to be more accurate – I don’t have my own) and I moved on to the next YouTube clip. Well, it appears not everyone saw the ad the same way I did. “Gillette’s campaign against toxic masculinity missed the mark,” read one headline, while a Sydney fire station had to apologise after putting this sign up: “House fires are toxic, our masculinity is not.”

For some of the people who were offended, words were not enough, so they posted photos on social media of Gillette razors trashed or thrown in toilets. Really? If I can steal a line by Cal Holroyd in the Sydney Morning Herald, if you are insulted by the Gillette ad about jerks – chances are you’re a jerk. In a decade or two, how do you think this issue would have played out – will you be on the side of decency in this debate? If we just look back at the last 100 years,

“I was so moved by the ad that I immediately shared it…” history can judge you harshly if you put self-interest before what is the right thing to do: women’s suffrage, civil rights, the 40-hour working week, gay marriage. Do you want to be the equivalent of that person who fought against women getting the vote? Before locking in your final position, I’d urge you listen to the wise words of a young boy who should be able expect to grow up in a society without all the harms inflicted by toxic masculinity. “We are in history now. In 20 years’ time this will be history.”

GRAMMAR MAKES A RACQUET WITH NEW APPOINTMENT

S

unshine Coast Grammar School is excited about the appointment of tennis ace, Clint Fyfe (pictured) as the school’s new head tennis coach. Clint has spent the past four years working with Tennis Australia as its Queensland talent development manager and talent performance coach. During his time in these positions, the playing groups he was responsible for became the strongest in the country. Prior to these roles, Mr Fyfe owned and operated one of the most successful tennis coaching and tennis centre management companies in Australia. A high performance tennis coach, Mr Fyfe won the 2013 prestigious Newcombe Medal for Talent Development Coaching Excellence. He has also won four Queensland Coaching Excellence awards and coached numerous state teams. Mr Fyfe’s coaching record across the pathway from beginners to performance players is admirable. He is excited by the challenge of working in a school environment, as he believes school programs should be a key component of the participation and performance strategy for Australian tennis. “I strongly believe school-based tennis programs are the optimal way to develop elite players while at the same time maximising wellbeing and educational outcomes,” says Mr Fyfe. “I look forward to delivering a sustainable comprehensive tennis program and holistic ‘child to champion’ pathway through my position as head tennis coach at Sunshine Coast Grammar School.” Principal at Sunshine Coast Grammar

School Mrs Maria Woods believes this appointment is a great match for the school. “Clint’s expert knowledge, attitude and skills will be instrumental in building on the strong foundation already established and further develop the Tennis School of Excellence Program at the school,” she says. Over the past decade, Mr Fyfe has also been responsible for delivering workshops and presentations for coaches at a state and national level including at the Australian Open Grand Slam Coaches Conference, the largest industry gathering in the Asia Pacific. “I am humbled by this opportunity to become a part of the community and can’t wait to share my knowledge and passion for tennis while developing a strong team culture,” he says. While Mr Fyfe’s previous work has taken him across the country, his family currently resides on the Sunshine Coast. He is happy to have a position that will keep him close to home and enable him to spend more time with his family.

FROM $8000 TO $40 PER SCRIPT: CANCER PILL SUBSIDY

Australians with lung cancer could save as much as $90,000 a year after the Federal Government announced the listing of a cancer-fighting pill on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. The subsiding of Tagrisso from February 1 will bring down the cost of an individual script from $8000 – or $88,000 for an entire year of treatment – to a maximum of $40.30 per script. “These are the announcements I like making the most,” Prime Minister Scott myweeklypreview.com.au

29.indd 1

Morrison told reporters. “Whether it is in drugs or providing clinical care, we are in this fight. We are going to fight cancer together and that’s what our government is doing.” A once-daily pill, Tagrisso has been shown to slow the growth of metastatic non-smallcell lung cancer in patients. Father-of-three Bruno is one of 400 people will benefit from the subsidy, after being diagnosed with genetic-related lung cancer. “I had a recurring cough that wouldn’t go away and it was only through a scan that I found out I actually had lung cancer,” he says. “I had this mutation so the fortunate thing about that was I got to do one of these targeted therapies which has given me a quality of life which I thought I could never have.” Cancer specialist Ben Solomon says the medication would help people suffering from a type of cancer that “does not discriminate”. – AAP

As an avid lover of Opera Fay Nixon put off doing anything about her hearing loss for years as she feared hearing aids would change the quality and pitch of what she heard. For years she had been constantly asking those around her to repeat themselves and found herself not wanting to go out as much as she felt like a fool and thought others were talking too fast. Fay became quite angry and isolated with years of hiding behind her sister and relying on her to do the listening for her. All of that changed when a friend referred her to Michael at Expert Audiology Rehab Solutions. Faye thought she may have had a slight hearing loss in her left ear but as it turned out her right ear was far worse. Recalling the moment Michael fitted her for hearing aids and says she couldn’t believe the difference – ‘it was instantaneous’, and her husband saw an instant change as well (and was quite happy to stop having to repeat himself). Through her ‘little microphones in the ears’ she now is now loving the opera more than ever and is out in front of her sister leading the discussion. I wouldn’t say I go out any more than I once did, but I definitely enjoy it more and

don’t dread it like I used to. My hearing aids have helped me hear children and higher pitch sounds whereas before that was almost impossible. It really was so simple and Michael knew exactly what I needed after running all of his tests. Her advice to anyone that is having trouble with their hearing ‘Just do it, don’t wait. It has changed my life’. Fay Nixon Mountain Creek, Sunshine Coast

A

ustralia Day in Buderim is shaping up to be one of the biggest to date, with more than 1000 people from more than 50 organisations marching, riding, driving and dancing in the annual Australia Day Parade. The Rotary Club of Buderim has created a grand morning of celebration that pays tribute to the many cogs that turn the community wheel. Buderim Rotary spokesperson Anthony Runacres likened the day of celebration to the Olympic rings, with many organisations coming together for the event, overlapping with one another and highlighting the connectedness of the community. The day starts with a multidenominational church service at 7am at St Mark’s Anglican Church in the main street and is followed with a hot breakfast hosted by the Lions Club at Middy’s and the official flag-raising ceremony and Welcome to Country from the Gubbi Gubbi Dance at the Old Post Office in Burnett Street. The parade, which is supported by the

Sunshine Coast Council, will start at the top of Burnett Street at 9am, with the route continuing to the Buderim Mountain State School oval. There will be a plethora of colour and movement from Coastal Caring Clowns while the Australian Defence Force will take some eight-wheeled Australian Light Armoured Vehicles for a drive down the street. There will also be a host of musicians, sports clubs, schools and community groups putting their best foot forward. Buderim Scout Group will be on the oval with refreshments and snacks available. Mr Runacres says this is an event “not to be missed”. “This year we step up a good-sized notch,” he says. “I lived in the UK for the first 25 years of my life, then New Zealand for the next 35 years and now the best part of 10 years in Australia, and sometimes I don’t think Australians really understand what they’ve got. It truly is the lucky country bursting with opportunities. Come and celebrate together.”

Il Vento brings traditional Italian cuisine to the heart of Mooloolaba. They reportedly boast the only wood-fired oven on the Coast, so it is no surprise that Il Vento’s secret weapon is the perfect wood-fired pizza. But the restaurant also specialises in fresh handmade pasta. One of the latest restaurants to open on The Wharf Mooloolaba, Il Vento uses authentic ingredients imported straight from the regions of Parma and Napoli, homemade pasta recipes passed down from Nonna to son and local produce that all Sunshine Coasters know and love.

You Wish is a light, easy read – a story told by the main character, Tom, who is both a graffiti artist and a director in his own digital reality company. He and the work team create photo albums that show the life a client wishes to have or to have had. Through humour, the author highlights obsessions and vulnerabilities in Tom’s life as he tries to manage family, romance and work integrity. But what is real and how much of our reality is self-deception? I found Tom a likeable character and enjoyed the read – nothing heavy and a good book to relax with on holiday.

DEAN STILL HAS THE X FACTOR

Musician Dean Ray grew up in the tiny Queensland town of Meandarra, with both parents performing and touring on the country music circuit. So it’s no surprise that Mr Ray is now an accomplished musician – as he says, he was “born into it”. Mr Ray travelled Australia sleeping in guitar cases while his parent packed up their gear to travel to the next beer-soaked venue. “Travelling with musicians, you pick up a thing or two,” he says. When he was six years old, he was keen to learn drums, and with guitar lessons underway at 13, he began to write songs. He was recruited into his parents’ band, but at 16 years of age left his family home

to move to Melbourne and follow his musical dream. Mr Ray has worked hard at his craft, writing, touring and honing his talents. He has performed countless headline shows, touring both nationally and internationally since making waves in the public eye as the runner-up of the sixth season of The X Factor in 2014. His debut single Coming Back hit number one on the iTunes singles chart with platinum status and his self-titled album achieved gold status. Mr Ray’s second album, The Messenger, is out now and he will be performing at the Palmwoods Hotel on January 27 from 2.30pm with support act To the Skies.

After a very brief trek back to Australian shores earlier this year with previous single Hear My Voice and then playing a bunch of sold-out homecoming shows across the country, Hein Cooper is back from writing in British coastal towns and French chalets with follow-up single Over Again – the second taste of new music from the prolific singer-songwriter. The result is fresh. The foundations of the Australian’s folk/indie pop styles are still present, but with hundreds of thousands of kilometres and new experiences under his belt, it’s now mixed with new genres and inspirations.

INDONESIAN FISH CURRY

Serves two.

INGREDIENTS 300g boneless fish fillets Cooking spray ½ tsp crushed garlic (in jar) 1 tbsp fresh lemongrass, finely sliced 1/3 cup red capsicum, sliced 1/3 cup green beans, sliced 2 tbsp shallots, sliced 1 tbsp low-salt soy sauce ½ tsp ground turmeric ¼ tsp ground cumin chilli powder to taste 1 tsp cornflour ¾ cup evaporated light milk ½ tsp coconut essence ¼ cup fresh coriander leaves

recipe

METHOD Cut fish into bite-sized pieces then fry until cooked through in a non-stick frypan that has been generously coated with cooking spray. Remove from pan and onto a plate to be added back to the pan later. Clean frypan and recoat with cooking spray. Add in the garlic, lemongrass, capsicum and beans. Sauté until crispy tender. Add shallots, soy sauce, turmeric, cumin and chilli to pan and toss together. Combine cornflour with milk and essence. Pour into pan, stirring well. Add coriander, stir into sauce. Bring sauce to boil then place fish back into pan and coat with sauce. Once fish has heated through, serve. Don’t overboil evaporated milk as it can separate. Serve with basmati rice or noodles (for a lower carb count use glass noodles) or microwave papadams.

DIETITIAN’S TIP: Ms Sym has used evaporated milk and coconut essence to provide that fantastic creamy flavour. Traditional recipes use coconut milk that is both high in fat and kilojoules. This is a great example of healthy recipe modification.

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

Leos love to be leaders. But, this week, you need to ask yourself “am I leading others (with passion and purpose) or just bossing them around?” If you power ahead without considering others, you’ll just create unnecessary angst.

The sun and Mercury pair up on Wednesday, which is perfect for problem-solving and creative brainstorming. You’ll find close partnerships will work best if you accept your relationship responsibilities with a smile.

Saturn and Neptune encourage you to contemplate your future. Whether you want to build a home, expand your family or change jobs, begin with a dream and then work hard to make it a robust reality. Dreams are wasted if you don’t turn them into projects.

Are the structures of your daily life stifling your progress? Break free of outdated ways of thinking and find fresh ways to communicate. On Thursday and Friday, reach out and help someone within your local neighbourhood.

Wednesday is a good day to boost your social media presence – family, friends and followers want to hear what you have to say. On Thursday and Friday, Neptune and Saturn encourage you to get the balance right between idealism and realism.

This week, there’s a practical and magical connection between Saturn (your power planet) and Neptune. So, there is much satisfaction to be gained through contributing your considerable talents to a worthy cause.

The sun and Mercury pair up in your sign, so it’s a good time to talk about controversial subjects and think innovatively. Then, Saturn and Neptune connect, which favours balancing material and spiritual needs.

In 2019, the ideal is to make your day-to-day work a part-time pleasure rather than a full-time chore. And, are you feeling stressed? The sun and Mercury pair up in your spiritual wellbeing zone, so some meditation could be just what the doctor ordered.

ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR LOCAL BUILDERS The Murphy family has well and truly left its mark on the Sunshine Coast, and the team is looking forward to more great builds in 2019.

I

n the past four decades, Leigh Murphy and his family have built some of the Coast’s best-known landmarks and countless homes while supporting charity-based projects. According to Mr Murphy’s daughter and fellow Murphy Builders director Brooke Bastien, it is the latter they enjoy the most. “One of the most rewarding facets of our building approach is to work directly with not-for-profit groups to realise their vision. “We invested more than time and in-kind support in building and project managing Murphy House for STEPS Pathways College in Caloundra – it’s now home to young adults with a range of disabilities learning life skills for independent living and each of their apartments is purpose-built for their needs,” she says. “Currently we are completing the new Daniel House, a centre for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to provide its Walk Tall counselling services for hundreds of children and families, and that’s another labour of love for us all.” There are more community and charity projects already in planning that will help put the region on the map for innovative construction with a social conscience.

Murphy Builders directors Brooke Bastien, Leigh Murphy and Mark Berry Leigh Murphy says he did not set out to leave his mark on the Sunshine Coast, only to contribute to the region’s reputation for excellent builders and high quality construction. For more than 40 years Mr Murphy and his family have been creating housing options for every household. Mr Murphy remains one of three directors of the company and as 2019 kicks off, he remembers how it all began. “I first started building in 1975 and I was

really struck by all the opportunities at the Coast to live by the water or with mountain views and how much demand, even then, there was from people wanting to move here,” he says. “There has always been a hum here. I’ve seen generations of families wanting to relocate to enjoy the lifestyle and bring up their children in a healthy, sunny and friendly place. I see my own children grown up now and developing their own businesses

by also sharing that dream with the clients they build homes for – it’s pretty satisfying to see.” Ms Bastien says she is passionate about making a difference through business. “I’ve had a lot of experience working with charitable organisations which clarified for me how projects of all kinds and sizes require focus, management and understanding of the human need for it,” she says. “Building a home or a commercial or investment project takes the same attention to detail to achieve its purpose ultimately. I enjoy that and interacting with clients as a shared effort in delivering their ideas.” The Murphy group has construction divisions in residential, investment, commercial and property development sectors and is currently building projects across Queensland and New South Wales. The major focuses for the company are eco-friendly and sustainable development, as well as diversification and the team closely monitors and incorporates market and industry trends into all it does. “We are all already looking ahead to 2019 and the things we can achieve – it’s going to be another milestone year for us I’d say,” Mr Murphy says.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Death by selfie. Yep, it’s a thing. The latest victims were a couple in Yosemite National Park. They thought it would be a great idea to be drunk and take a selfie on the edge of a 240-metre cliff. It’s a timely reminder to take care, even when in the moment. Okay, no surf peeps but the good news is I am closer to my snow trip. Actually, it seems everyone is bugging out to go snowboarding. Hope you guys a good weekend.
