FROM THE EDITOR
T
he name Allison Baden-Clay is set in the memories of millions of Australians. News of her murder, committed by her husband, sent shockwaves around the nation. How could this beautiful, intelligent mother-oftwo be a victim of domestic violence? The facts don’t lie, and neither do the faces of the thousands of women, men and children who battle against this heinous epidemic each and every day. If there is one thing to come from Allison’s death, it is a clear message – as a community we should not, and cannot, tolerate domestic violence. Vanessa Fowler is making sure this message is heard loud and clear. The sister of Allison was awarded a Pride of Australia Medal for her work in helping raise awareness and seeking help for other women who are in these situations. As the founder of the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation she and her team are advocating on behalf of women who feel they have little voice, and next month she will share her story as the guest speaker of Venue 114’s first In Conversation event. Be sure to read Vanessa’s story on page 20. It’s heartbreaking, yet inspiring. Also this edition, we take a look at the renovation movement, which continues to gain momentum here on the Sunshine Coast. Renovation expert Cherie Barber offers up her best tips and advice for those going down the project path. I hope you enjoy this edition as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. Until next week, take care.

QUICK CHAT
GAME ON Where do you live? Buderim. First job? I was a milkman when I was 15. The minimum wage at the time was $4 and my parents taxed me an additional 25 per cent after I had paid tax. What are you currently working on? My wife and I have started a small business in Caloundra, 12RND Fitness Caloundra. It’s a functional training business that combines boxing with functional strength and cardiovascular health. Your family includes? My wife Jamie, our daughter Brooke and our dog Lulu. First car? Holden Commodore VL 3.0. Favourite book? Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach. My dad brought me a copy as a child. It’s short but so inspirational. You gotta dream big. If your life was a book, what would be the title? Living the Dream or Love Your Life or Change It. What are you reading now? Sadly most of the reading I’m doing for myself is the titles of Netflix shows. I love a podcast too as I drive a lot with my job.
BIO
athlete
Dan Ward-Smith is the proud owner of three passports, one of which is Australian. He played professional rugby union for 12 years in New Zealand and then in the UK. This career culminated in him representing England back in 2010. He now lives the dream on the Sunshine Coast where he works in the pharmaceutical industry and owns 12RND Fitness Caloundra with his wife Jamie.
If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? The Bruce Highway. C’mon it’s like Mad Max out there. Best day in your life and why? The day my wife agreed to marry me. Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? In 2007 I had been picked to play for England but I snapped my patellar tendon in my knee a week out and the recovery was around 18 months. That pretty much sabotaged my test rugby career and I have never really recovered from the damage to my knee.
“I’m coaching this year and I’m going to have more of a crack at playing a few games”
Favourite song and why? Juicy by Notorious B.I.G. I love those phat beats and Biggie’s voice is super smooth.
Dan Ward-Smith
What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? 12RND Fitness Caloundra. The flexibility! The gainz! It’s da bomb.
What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? I am watching a documentary about Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart, a WWE wrestler from the 1990s. It’s pretty good and I love a sport-related or historic documentary. When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Twenty minutes of rugby union for Caloundra Lighthouses reserve grade. I’m coaching this year and I’m going to have more of a crack at playing a few games if my body can stay together. I may even put in 80 minutes. Best advice you’ve been given? My Dad told me, “Keep your eye on the ball.”
What achievement are you most proud of? I once put a springfree tramp together solo. C’mon dads give me a hola if you’ve had a crack at that one. That and playing my first game for England at Twickenham. You are happiest when? I’m at the beach with my family.
If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Just enjoy the ride. If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Hulk Hogan, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and my mate Geoff Moon, who was recently taken from us too soon. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? A millie doesn’t go far these days. I’m going straight Gold Class at Event Cinemas Kawana with all the trimmings and if I have any change left I’d get a classic Camaro and upgrade our house. Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Coffee. Tea is obsolete and may go extinct. NRL or AFL? Union is number one, of course, but NRL is number two.

THE ART OF RENOVATION There’s a certain magic that comes with breathing new life into a property with a successful renovation. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.
S
he has earned the moniker of ‘the accidental renovator’, but Cherie Barber’s success far outweighs her initial stumble into the billiondollar industry. From what could have been a disastrous property decision, Ms Barber, through hard work and tenacity, has built a career of wealth and knowledge on the renovation platform. In the past 28 years she has renovated more than 112 homes and is now a familiar face not only in construction circles but from her work on television shows such as The Living Room, Today Extra and America’s 5 Day Flip. She has left her determined footprints on a traditionally male-dominated industry, proving that women have just as much place in home renovating as men. “It’s really the only thing I know,’’ Ms Barber tells My Weekly Preview. “It started when I was 21 and I fell into renovation by accident. My first property was a stuff up. I bought my first property on a six-lane highway… and I bought it as my forever home. I realised it was the worst location ever. I cleaned the property up cosmetically and ended up making an accidental profit. “I enjoy getting incredible satisfaction from the before and afters. I get to an end of a project and go, I did that. That’s what drives me.”

It seems that the renovation industry is attracting more than the professional flipper, with figures showing that Australia’s renovation sector celebrated its busiest quarter in 14 years during the three months to September 2018. According to Master Builders Australia (MBA) figures, the volume of renovations work rose by 4.5 per cent during the quarter alone and was 11 per cent higher than a year ago. MBA chief economist Shane Garrett says while times have often been tough for the nation’s home renovations market, the recent figures show that it is now bigger and better. “While new home building scaled new records over recent years, the performance of renovations activity has been quite puzzling and had failed to replicate this strong performance,” he says. “The stronger position of the renovations market during the September 2018 quarter is linked to the fact that interest rates are very low and remarkably stable at this time. “The tightening of credit conditions have prevented many families from being able to move house over the past year. It seems that some of those have decided to renovate their existing home instead. “Australia’s home renovations industry may be an unintended beneficiary of the tougher lending policies.”
Here on the Sunshine Coast the market experienced a five per cent increase in the three months to October 2018 when compared with the same period in 2017. Figures from the Housing Industry Association show that 44,291 homes in our region underwent some type of alteration or renovation. Meanwhile, Queensland’s
“I enjoy getting incredible satisfaction from the before and afters. I get to the end of a project and go, I did that. That’s what drives me” Cherie Barber
figure came in at 427,116 for the three months to October 2018. HIA executive director Michael Roberts says it is interesting to note the contrast between the conditions in new home builds and home renovations. “New home building has comfortably surpassed all previous highs, whereas renovations activity has seen only modest
gains,’’ he says. “The age profile of Australia’s detached house stock is another factor influencing the volume of home renovation activity. The past cycles of renovation activity show a reasonable correlation between the number of detached houses in the 30 to 35 age bracket and the amount of renovation activity. “Houses of this vintage tend to require more substantial renovations work due to wear and tear and changing preferences relating style and functionality over the decades. “A rough estimate suggests that there are just over 110,000 detached houses in Queensland of the 30 to 35-year vintage. The good news for the renovations market is that a detached house building boom took place in the second half of the 1980s decade. “These houses will enter the prime renovations age group over the coming decade and should provide a solid basis for growth in home renovations activity.” Mr Garrett echoes these thoughts: “Looking further out, we are almost certain to see further gains for home renovations. More detached houses were built in late-1980s Australia than at any time before or since. More and more of these will be begging for major renovations work in the coming years.” Renovators, what are you waiting for? myweeklypreview.com.au

THE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT
Cherie’s top
ive ftips
THE PROFESSIONAL Cherie Barber Australia’s renovation queen renovates around 15 properties a year – some of her own and some for TV. As a self-taught renovator, she now has the process down to a fine art. Ms Barber established her company Renovating For Profit in 2009 and more than 11,000 Australians have now undergone her training. She is currently finishing off a structural renovation on her Sydney home. “Renovation has become more popular and rightly so,’’ Ms Barber says. “More Australians are knowledgeable about property. Twenty years ago… you’d buy a house and pay it off. The average Australian now needs to have three or four houses before they retire. “Australians realise they can go from average Joes into a cosmetic renovation and not stuff it up too much.” Ms Barber says that cosmetic renovations are one of the best marketing tools when it comes to selling a property. “Buy unrenovated, but in a good capital growth suburb. It’s about getting in and doing a quick cosmetic renovation, tap into the equity and refinance to tap into the next property.”
• Grand plan – This is how you want the property to look inside and out. Be clear on your design vision. • Map everything out – Plan the renovation thoroughly. Map out the plan on a roomby-room basis, produce a run sheet and cost up everything beforehand. If you go over budget, start culling the things that are not essential. • Detail – Labour costs equal around 60 per cent of a renovation, while materials come in at about 40 per cent. Control labour costs by providing detailed scopes of work for all trades. • Shop smartly – Every dollar saved is an extra dollar earned. Buy good quality materials but negotiate and source second-hand when you can. • Renovate to what the market wants – Ditch personal taste and invest in a design palette that has broad appeal.
KNOW YOUR BUDGET For a cosmetic renovation budget around 10 per cent of the current property value. The kitchen and bathroom are the two rooms that add the most value. They also cost the most when it comes to renovating. You should allocate two per cent of the property’s value on each of these rooms.
Cassandra Fenaughty Sunshine Coast-based landscape architect Cassandra has more than 20 years’ experience in her industry. She is the founder and owner of a concept design business that provides clients with options that range from a simple in-home consultation through to sketch plan ideas and photo-real concepts.
“I have always had a passion for design, both landscape architecture and interior design,’’ she says. “My husband and I have renovated two homes in recent years and through those experiences and our professional careers we now have a wealth of knowledge in the renovation field, which I love sharing with my clients to inspire them and make their lives easier. “The best renovation outcomes are when internal and external spaces are designed together, especially in our climate where the outdoors are such a large part of our living space. Aspect, air flow, connectivity, livability and aesthetics all work better when internal and external spaces are considered together.” She says two popular styles for Coast homes include the Hamptons and contemporary-minimalist designs. “The Hamptons style can be applied to Queenslanders, cottages and weatherboard homes by applying whites, neutrals and blues, traditional finishes and formal or sub-tropical gardens. “The modern minimalist style is usually good for lightweight buildings with simple forms. Dark greys and whites with a splash of a feature colour work well with this style, with pared-back industrial finishes. Manicured lawns and feature trees or natural native gardens frame a modern minimalist home effectively.”
CASSANDRA’S RENO TIPS • A lot of people find it difficult to articulate the style they like, finishes they want or even layout of elements in words, and many people find it difficult to read plans and drawings. Ensure you have a clear brief and budget range before you get started. • Having a clear, illustrated brief can save thousands of dollars and hours of arguments and stress in a renovation.
WIN WIN WIN This month we have launched a new Q&A column with renovation concept design and landscape architect Cassandra Fenaughty in our sister publication, My Renovation. Simply email your renovation question, along with your name, to cholznagel@ myweeklypreview.com.au. We will publish the column in each edition of My Renovation, which is out on the last Friday of each month. To kick off the column, we are giving one lucky reader the chance to win a $200 renovation design consultation gift card from Cassandra. She will consult with the winner at their Sunshine Coast home. REFINE YOUR CREATIVE IDEAS WITH NEW INCUBATOR The region’s first creative incubator, The Refinery, is set to launch this month and has been developed to help local creatives turn their ideas into sustainable and successful businesses. A joint initiative by the Sunshine Coast Council, SunCentral Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance, The Refinery is designed to support independent artists, creative technologists, early-stage entrepreneurs and creative industries practitioners. Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance president Phil Smith says The Refinery will help participants gain access to world-class industry mentors, immerse themselves in workshops and networking opportunities and unlock seed funding. The Refinery will be at the new Maroochydore City Centre Creative Precinct.
BREWING UP NEW BUSINESS The Sunshine Coast Council will begin looking for tenders to take up a five-year lease on a six-metre shipping container cafe at Happy Valley. Once the existing food and snack van’s lease runs out in June, the council will install the commercial cafe premises to provide a more “secure and viable business opportunity,” says deputy mayor Tim Dwyer. Hospitality experts Hiller undertook a detailed design of the proposed new cafe to ensure the internal layout would suit a wide range of potential operators while providing enough space and equipment to run a sustainable business.
The second round of the Aura Community Grants Program is launching with a large pool of funding available for local organisations in need of a helping hand. More than $300,000 will be up for grabs, with not-forprofit groups and community organisations delivering services in Caloundra North, Caloundra South and the Glasshouse Country areas invited to apply. The funding can be used for either a one-off project or to deliver an ongoing project or services. For more information or to apply for a grant, visit the News & Events page at cityofcolour.com.
PAWS FOR A CAUSE Celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge with a long table lunch in the paddock at Montville. People, Plates & Places will be serving a chef-prepared four-course meal featuring local produce, and paired wines and beers on March 23. Purchasing a ticket will contribute to the ongoing funding of SCARS, and there will be silent and live auctions on the day, where you can further support the hard work of the SCARS volunteers and staff. Tickets are available for $150 from peopleplatesplaces.com.au.
THE COAST’S HIGH ACHIEVERS GEAR UP FOR UNI The University of the Sunshine Coast is awaiting an influx of Sunshine Coast OP1 graduates who are preparing for the first semester to begin. Buderim’s Roi McGuinness will fulfil a lifelong dream to study medicine as one of only 20 school leavers Australiawide to gain a place in the Bachelor of Medical Science offered at USC for the second year. The highly competitive three-year degree provides provisional direct entry to Griffith University’s Doctor of Medicine program at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. OP1 graduates Tom Rosenthal (pictured) from Caloundra State High School and Sarah Spilar from St Andrew’s Anglican College at Peregian Springs will study alongside Mr McGuinness.

NEW CAMERAS TO INCREASE SAFETY IN CALOUNDRA A state-of the art CCTV system comprising 23 imaging devices is now operational in Caloundra after more than a decade-long campaign for increased safety in the CBD area. The fight for CCTV ignited in 2007 after the death of lifesaver Josh Mills at a taxi rank in Caloundra’s CBD, signalling the need for enhanced security measures. The now completed CCTV system is the product of a $140,000 Federal Government grant under its Safer Communities Fund, which was awarded to the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce in May 2017. The cameras have been strategically placed by the Caloundra Police Service in partnership with the chamber to inhibit crime at the most at-risk areas.
COMPASS TRAINEES LEARN SURF SAFETY SKILLS Sunshine Coast Lightning players Karla Pretorius and Annika Lee-Jones (pictured with a program participant) joined the Compass trainees at Kings Beach for their first lifesaving training program for the year. The program included a safety presentation on flags and signs, rescue equipment, who lifesavers are, what they do and how they dress, sun safety and what marine animals to look out for. The presentation was followed up with practical beach activities for the trainees to help them get comfortable in the water. Compass CEO David Dangerfield says the training is about boosting confidence and knowledge of the surf.
DESIGNER OF OUR NEW CITY HALL ANNOUNCED Cottee Parker, an award-winning national practice with experience in delivering contemporary urban designs, has been appointed principal architect to the Sunshine Coast Council City Hall project. The City Hall will be located on the 53-hectare greenfield Maroochydore City Centre – the site of Australia’s next smart city. Business performance group executive Jeanette Allom-Hill says Cottee Parker has an Australiawide presence and has been involved in major projects such as Youi’s global headquarters at Sippy Downs, Mercedes Autohaus at Newstead and Queen’s Wharf in Brisbane City. The building is scheduled to open in July 2022.
Immanuel Lutheran College has celebrated 40 years delivering an outstanding educational experience for Sunshine Coast students with a whole-campus birthday celebration. Principal Colin Minke says the primary school opened in January 1979 on a 13-hectare block of land in the Buderim foothills, led by Principal Mr Norm Auricht. It was a modest start with only 80 students. Last week, the college opened more than $9 million of new and refurbished facilities across the now 23-hectare campus, including a School Environmental Centre, a Learn To Swim pool, a $3.6-million building with six purpose-built learning areas, refurbished administration facilities and a new Year 4 building.
BUDERIM FOUNDATION RAISES OVER $430,000 After the launch of its new fundraising initiative during Australia Day celebrations, the Buderim Foundation has revealed the 2018 Community Challenge was a huge success with a total of $433,000 raised by the group in 2018, comprising contributions from seven local businesses, three community groups, two bequests, nine events and 68 individual contributions. In addition to these donor contributions, the foundation relies on an army of volunteer ambassadors working behind the scenes in the areas of marketing, events, donor development, grants, youth development, policy and investment. DOING OUR BIT FOR SUSTAINABILITY My Weekly Preview is joining a regional push to phase out single-use plastic by committing to a reduction in the use of our plastic bags.

unshine Coast Council has taken its support of the region’s journey towards phasing out single-use plastics one step further. Late last month the council voted to phase out the products at its facilities and events, and Environment Portfolio councillor Jenny McKay says the organisation has already made significant progress. “I’d like to raise the bar even further and encourage the phasing out of single-use plastics to be implemented at all council leased facilities, council supported events and activities held under a permit on council managed land,” she says. “We’ve been on this journey for many years.” Sunshine Coast Council says it has been working proactively with the community to address the impacts of plastic on our natural environment. “Simple things like taking our own reusable water bottles, cups and bags with us when heading out and replacing plastic items with alternative products makes a big difference to our environment in the long term,” Cr McKay adds. “We’ve already seen great results. The team at Sunshine Coast Stadium saved a

whopping 11,477 single-use plastic items between June and September 2018, simply by changing to compostable and biodegradable packaging at the canteen. “I encourage the community and local businesses to get on-board to phase out
single-use plastics. We’ve already identified opportunities to help our community adopt sustainable practices at events when catering. “If we work together, we’ll be better equipped to protect our beautiful Sunshine Coast.” My Weekly Preview has committed to the cause. The 100 per cent locally-owned company, which indirectly and directly
employs around 160 people, has set targets to achieve a reduction in the use of biodegradable plastic bags to ensure the company is even more efficient and sustainable in its practices. Editor Candice Holznagel says the team will spend the next 12 to 18 months minimising the reliance on these bags as they work towards an improved sustainable distribution method. “My Weekly Preview was the first publication in Queensland to use biodegradable plastic bags,’’ she says. “Our magazine is also printed on paper stock that is sourced from a paper mill with a sustainable forest agreement. “The magazine is stamped with the PEFC logo – an achievement that we pride ourselves on. PEFC is the world’s leading forest certification organisation and is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management. “Our publishers are hoping this move will encourage other businesses to look at what they can do to help keep our region green. We also want to take this opportunity to remind readers to correctly recycle their copy of the magazine when they are finished enjoying the edition.”

PROFILE
IT’S GOOD TO TALK Vanessa Fowler is being the voice that her sister, Allison Baden-Clay, did not have. Ms Fowler is coming to the Sunshine Coast to encourage others to talk about family and domestic violence. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
V
anessa Fowler says in hindsight, there were signs that things weren’t right in the marriage of her sister Allison Baden-Clay and Mrs Baden-Clay’s husband Gerard. “If we had of known what we know now, things may have been a little different,” she says. “There was the isolation. We didn’t see all that much of her because he had blocked our numbers from their home phone, she couldn’t contact us and we couldn’t contact her. He monitored her phone, her texts, the calls she made and received. There was also financial control. We had no idea about their financial situation. Everything that came out in the trial indicated he had control of all of the money and was not good at managing the finances of the family. “Throughout the whole process, we could see a change in her from being a very confident career-minded woman to losing a lot of her self-esteem because of the derogatory comments he was making to her on a daily basis. That came out as evidence in her diary. We as her family were the bystanders. Certainly there are things we could’ve, would’ve, should’ve done if we had more knowledge and education around the whole issue of family and domestic violence. We’re brought up with the mindset that it’s none of our business; they’re a married couple and you don’t interfere. They can sort it out. But that’s not the case.” Tragically, Mrs Baden-Clay was murdered by her husband in 2012, leaving their three daughters without a mother. Ms Fowler’s parents are now raising the girls, who haven’t seen their father since he was convicted. “My parents are doing really well,” Ms Fowler says. “It has been tiring for them and they didn’t expect their retirement years to be uprooted and to be having to raise three beautiful girls again. In this day and age, with technology, raising children has certainly changed since they did it the first time around. It’s a lot more complicated, but we have a great network of family and friends around us. The girls are doing well and they’re happy.” In 2014, Ms Fowler launched the Allison Baden-Clay Foundation to advocate for education and awareness of domestic and family violence. She was still working full-time as a primary school teacher at the time, but has since scaled back to part-time as the foundation has taken off. On March 8, she’ll visit the Sunshine Coast for In Conversation – Celebrating International Women’s Day and is looking forward to spreading her message to our local community at the lunch event.
The Allison Baden-Clay Foundation has recently partnered with Griffith University for the MATE Bystander Program, which has been tailored to incorporate Mrs Baden-Clay’s story to show that what happened to her is not just theoretical. Things like isolation, attacking someone’s self-esteem, controlling their technology or their finances, can lead to a tragedy. “I believe the message is getting through,” Ms Fowler says. “We’ve had women come forward because of Allison’s story and it has saved their lives. They were able to make the decision to move out, to make a break from their partner and they actually did escape.” While it’s not just women who are victims of family violence, they are the vast majority. However, it’s important to acknowledge the factors that lead men to commit such
“Our voice can lift people up with great supportive comments, but it can also tear people down ”
“The event is all about having a conversation,” she says. “We all have a voice and we need to use our voice. We can use it in many and varied ways, particularly when it comes to family violence. We can use our voice by approaching a neighbour or friend or work colleague, by letting them know you’re there for them and support them. Family and domestic violence are very isolating and knowing there is somebody there does make a difference. Even men calling out their mates when having drinks at the pub on Friday night – calling them out if they make derogatory comments against women. “It starts early. When we use our voice in negative ways like ‘don’t run like a girl’ or ‘don’t cry like a girl’ it immediately sends out a message that girls are inferior and I am stronger than them. Our voice can lift people up with great supportive comments, but it can also tear people down and strip them of their self-esteem. It’s very important we use our words wisely, particularly when it comes to family and domestic violence.”

horrific acts. “We would love to see more support given to perpetrators,” Ms Fowler says. “What is going on in their minds that they feel they need to do this? We would love for more men to stand up and support other men. “But some people are psychopaths or narcissists and that’s the way they’re wired. In our case, I think it was one thing on top of the other – the affair, there was no money, he’d exhausted all his avenues for gaining finance. Allison was heading back to work and gaining independence as the children were heading to school. Something just cracked.” Ms Fowler says while she’s pleased with what the foundation has achieved so far, including the introduction of Strive to Be Kind Day, there’s a long way to go. “The main thing is we are trying to encourage respect for others and changing the language we use in our everyday life,” she says. “If we can change the language, we can change the mindset of people in the community. We can change the way people think and change the way people act. That’s our challenge.”

FOOD FOR THE SOUL A woman who has helped feed disadvantaged locals for over a decade has been named our Citizen of the Year. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
W
hen Debra Knight was named Sunshine Coast Citizen of the Year at the Australia Day Awards ceremony, a spotlight was shone on the community organisation she has devoted more than a decade of her life to – Gateway Care. Ms Knight has led a team of volunteers who have worked tirelessly to keep the low-cost grocery store not only operational for the past 13 years, but has transformed it into a place for people to gather to socialise, connect and stave off loneliness by talking with others who are ready and willing to listen. Gateway Care has more than 9000 families on its database, with close to 4000 families having accessed its services in the past 12 months. Deputy Mayor Tim Dwyer, who presented the awards during the ceremony, says Ms Knight has an inspiring passion and dedication for helping those in need. Ms Knight says she is still surprised by her award win, but last week she was already back to business, working out ways in which she can bring the organisation’s wish list to life. Gateway Care has been set up in such an effective way that it is largely self-sustainable, with a number of businesses on board to
help them with presentation, communication skills and how to work with people in the wider community,” he says. Mr Lew says while at times the overheads can “be crippling”, they are able to continue functioning and growing due to the support from the wider community. “We want people to know that they can benefit from our low-cost groceries if they have a Centrelink card or are receiving welfare benefits, but sometimes they feel there is a stigma attached to accessing services like ours,” he says. “We encourage anybody that is eligible to come down to this community outlet and know that we rely on them as much as they rely on us. Having shoppers at Gateway helps us as the more product we can turn over, the more viable it is for us to remain open.” Ms Knight says she’d love to see more people buying coffees and meals from their cafe, which is open to the general public.
Daphne Pirie AO MBE, Caroline Campbell from Channel 7, Debra Knight and Cr Tim Dwyer supply products to Gateway at little or no cost. The addition of a small margin allows the charity to pay their enormous overheads and save a little to improve facilities and services. “We’ve got a thriving cafe area and we’re looking to put a shade sail up there once we can find some kind person to donate one, and someone who will put it up for us,” she says. “Then we will need some lovely outdoor furniture and we are looking to build a bigger freezer so we will no longer have to
pay $500 a month to rent the two container freezers we currently use. And we do need another forklift, our forklift broke and we’ve had to borrow one…” Gateway Care director Tom Lew says the organisation provides a wide range of services, including employing people who are on welfare to skill them up as baristas or cash register operators so they can gain sustainable employment into the future. “We don’t just teach them the job skills, we

Former Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) CEO Kevin Hegarty received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to public health administration. Holding the position from 2003 to 2017, the Pelican Waters resident was instrumental in the planning and delivery of the $1.8-billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Since moving on from the SCHHS, Mr Hegarty is the Associate Professor of Health Management at the University of the Sunshine Coast as well as holding positions on a number of advisory committees. Dr Steven Coverdale was awarded an OAM for his service to medicine on the Sunshine Coast, particularly to cardiac health. The Buderim resident has been the senior staff specialist at SCHHS since 1993 and headed up the University of Queensland Sunshine Coast Clinical School from January to November 2017, holding the position of conjoint head from 2008 to 2017. Dr Coverdale’s links to the Nambour General Hospital began in 1994 when he was a director of physician training and he has held numerous positions over the years, including director of medicine, head of the medical student program, director of clinical training and founded the Cardiac Catheter
Jan Becker Laboratory in 2012. Wishlist co-founder Michael Kelly was recognised with an OAM for service to the Sunshine Coast community. The Sunshine Coast health charity was established in 1998 and Mayor Mark Jamieson says thousands of patients and their families have benefitted from the accommodation and equipment provided as a result of Wishlist’s fundraising efforts. THINGS TO REMEMBER IN ROUGH TIMES
S
hane Oliver is the head of investment strategy and the chief economist at AMP Capital. In a recent article he outlined seven things investors should keep in mind during tough times like we have had in the last quarter. • First, periodic sharp setbacks in share markets are healthy and normal. Shares climb a wall of worry over many years with periodic setbacks, but with the long-term trend providing higher returns than more stable assets. The setbacks are the price we pay for the higher long-term return from shares. • Second, selling shares or switching to a more conservative strategy after a major fall just locks in a loss. The best way to guard against selling on the basis of emotion is to adopt a well thought-out, long-term investment strategy. • Third, when growth assets fall in price they are cheaper
26 My Weekly Preview | February 8, 2019

and offer higher long-term return prospects. So, the key is to look for opportunities that pullbacks provide. Afterpay Touch is a perfect example of that recently, as is CSL and Macquarie Bank – they pulled back significantly and have now started to rise strongly again. • Fourth, while shares may have fallen in value, the dividends from the market haven’t. The income flow you are receiving from a diversified portfolio of shares remains attractive. While this is generally true, many dividends did fall for a period of one to two years during the GFC but quickly recovered to previous levels (or higher). • Fifth, shares often bottom at the point of maximum bearishness. So, when everyone is negative and cautious it’s often time to buy. • Sixth, turn down the noise on financial news. Much of the media is overly sensationalistic, and paying undue attention to it can cause serious losses. In periods of market turmoil, the flow of negative news reaches fever pitch, which makes it very hard to stick to a well-considered, long-term strategy let alone see the opportunities. • Finally, accept that it’s a low nominal return world – low nominal growth and low bond yields and earnings yields mean lower long-term returns. This means that periods of relative high returns such as in 2017 are often followed by weaker years. I trust this helps in keeping a calm head in times of market turmoil.

LOCALS TEAM UP FOR WISHLIST Two Sunshine Coast-based companies have teamed up to help support the work of local charity Wishlist. Maroochydore-based technology company EyeOnIt and Warana-based equipment manufacturer Quik Corp have joined the Wishlist Partnership Program. The program harnesses the support of local businesses to enhance the work of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service for the benefit of local families. EyeOnIt founder Phillipa Harcourt McNamara (pictured, with Wishlist CEO Lisa Rowe and Quik Corp managing director David Wardle), says the company’s decision to support Wishlist is based on its long-term and diverse community focus to positively affect people’s lives. Mr Wardle says his company also wanted to support something in the local area they felt made a significant difference. Ms Rowe says the partnerships are crucial to Wishlist. “[The] partnership program sees an exclusive club of local businesses work towards our shared vision, to provide the best health services possible for our families.

MERCEDES-BENZ SUNSHINE COAST PROMOTION
Decades of experience under one Italian leather belt Meet Dean Forcone, the longest-serving salesman at Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
A
lot has changed in the twenty-plus years Dean Forcone has been with Mercedes-Benz. Ten of those years have been with Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast, making him the company’s longest-serving salesman. He’s still as enthusiastic as ever and has no plans to retire. “Looking back, it does seem like a very quick ten years, he says. “I’m not a spring chicken anymore, but retirement hasn’t been on my horizon at any point. I guess that means I’ll probably be here for another ten years. That’s good news for Mercedes-Benz Sunshine Coast customers. Everyone knows Dean as the ‘nicest bloke in the world’ and that’s because he genuinely loves what he does and brings a touch of Italian charm to his job. As the sales executive for pre-owned vehicles, he meets a diverse clientele. “In the last decade, Mercedes-Benz has really stepped up a gear, he says. “The volume of people who want to buy our brand has multiplied by 100 per cent. “It’s an exciting period for me as I feel Mercedes-Benz has reached a high point in its
Dean Forcone evolution. We’re not only building safe, reliable and well-engineered cars, but we also build exciting cars that are a perfect blend of emotion and intelligence. They’ve realised as humans, we make decisions at an emotional level, on how the car makes us feel while the precision engineering and reliability serve as peace of mind.
“Years ago, someone said to me, it’s not enough to build the safest car in the world if it doesn’t have the ‘wow’ factor. Today, MercedesBenz definitely has the ‘wow’ factor. Now we’re making cars that appeal to a generation that just got their licence. We’re not looking at a small niche demographic anymore. We love keeping
those customers until they’re ready to retire and beyond, customers for life Being in the area of pre-owned vehicles, Dean learns a lot about the psychology of his customers. “Our customers like updating, he says. “When they see something newer, then they feel the same aspiration that drove them to the brand pushing their buttons again. They want to come in and have the latest and greatest. We also have a percentage of people who will keep the car for ten years, and they’re just as important to us. Dean has lived on the Sunshine Coast for 11 years, having first visited 38 years ago and fallen in love with the place. He landed his job at Mercedes-Benz soon after and is thrilled to work with a team he sees as an extended family. “The icing on the cake is that we’ve got a really good team of people here, he says. “That’s very important. We do spend a lot of time together – I don’t know a salesperson who puts in less than 70 hours a week. If you haven’t got a great team to work with, I don’t think it would be the same.

MY OPINION
ANIMAL PASSION
ROBOT REBELLION
Sami Muirhead is watching Free Willy re-runs with her kids and rediscovering her long lost passion for whale conservation.
Richard O’Leary questions whether a showdown between humans and robots is inevitable in the future as more jobs become automated.
W
e are a family who should climb more mountains and watch fewer movies, so I have spent the first week back at school introducing the kids to a true animal lover’s classic: Free Willy. I just adore our movie nights at home. For those of you who missed the four movies (yes, there were four), they all revolve around a wayward kid who befriends Willy the killer whale and releases him from the clutches of an evil concrete pool into the wild to be with his family pod. A stirring Michael Jackson song often plays at this reunion and there is not a dry eye in the house as a Willy jumps into the air and over a rock wall in slow motion. The movie has sparked many conversations in our house from my three kids, ranging from the questionable fashion of the ’90s to the ethics of keeping marine animals in captivity. It has taken me down memory lane and awoken some of the old fight in me that I lost along the way. Free Willy started a revolution around the world when it was released in 1993. I caught the bus to the Gold Coast to join thousands of other teenagers as we protested against capturing killer whales from the wild to make money from them in marine parks. I donated my money from my grocery store job to help free the real life whale used in Free Willy called Keiko. I decided then and there I wanted to see animals in the wild, not in captivity. A few
years later I backpacked by myself to a tiny island off Vancouver called Telegraph Cove to see orcas in the wild. It was a moment in time I will never forget as massive fins cut through the black still waters and mist rose from the freezing ocean. It was silent. Except for the sound of those killing machines gliding through the water as they had done since the beginning of time. The majesty of the pod as they watched us was enough to make anyone’s heart beat a little faster. But I lost my zing along the way when it came to my passion for these animals. Work took over my passion. And then I buried who I really am and what really makes me tick. I have been coming home in many ways the last little while, going back to my roots. Is that something that happens in your forties? So now I have a crazy dream to take my kids one day to see orcas in the wild. It is a pretty powerful thought. And this week I watched the documentary Blackfish on Netflix, about Tilikum the killer whale that killed three trainers. It is brilliant. I used to love documentaries and after I had kids I could no longer watch the cruelty of nature and baby animals being hunted and killed, so I stopped watching them. Another part of me I can feel I am returning to. In the meantime after a busy week of school and work, we still have Free Willy 3 to look forward to, as well as Free Willy: Escape from Pirate’s Cove – it stars our own Bindy Irwin. I am not sure much homework will be getting done next weekend.

A
security guard was wrapped in a tarp and covered with barbecue sauce. Another official was attacked in America’s Silicon Valley. And a hitchhiker was beheaded in Philadelphia. What do these crimes have in common? All the victims were robots. The story appeared recently in The New York Times – and it appears attacks on automatons aren’t restricted to America. A humanoid robot was beaten in Japan and a teaching robot was bashed with a baseball bat in Russia. It’s a worldwide phenomenon, but what is behind the attacks? The recent meeting of the world’s filthy rich in Davos, Switzerland, may provide some of the answers. The corporate executives at the World Economic Forum said nice things in public about providing safety nets for people who will lose their jobs to robots. But according to at least one insider, that narrative changed when the doors were closed to the public. In private, the focus was how to replace workers as quickly as possible to avoid being overtaken by the competition. So, robots have become super-sexy for CEOs and shareholders, but you can understand why they can be a real turn-off for workers of the world. One expert predicts 40 per cent of today’s jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence within 15 years.
But why the violent response to the robots themselves, rather than against their human makers and the employers who introduce them to the workplace? It may be because we see ourselves as biological machines (a human heart is a mechanical pump, DNA is explained as analog computer code, and the nervous system is seen as an electrical board, and so on), that it’s not too great a leap to see a robot as one of us – and therefore fair game for the most human of traits – violence. Does that mean that a battle between
“…a teaching robot was bashed with a baseball bat in Russia” humans and robots is inevitable? Not necessarily. One robot maker has come up with a solution. He found if robots are given a name, fellow workers are much less likely to attack them. Which is reassuring I guess, but when you make your living from writing you don’t really have to worry about being replaced by a robot anyway. Right? Wrong! The Guardian newspaper published its first computer generated story this week. I don’t know the name of this mechanical author, but I could really throttle him. Her. It.
Richard O’Leary is a journalist, a political adviser and a father who knows there’s a deeper meaning to life, but struggles to find it.

Visit Sunshine Coast has also compiled a list of romantic ideas to consider this Valentine’s Day. Paint and sip For a date night with a difference, head to The Art Hub Sunshine Coast to enjoy one of the ‘Paint and Sip’ workshops where you can test your artistic talents on canvas, with a paintbrush in one hand and glass of wine in the other. On February 16, The Art Hub will host a Picasso Portraits event, making for a fun night out.
FEELING THE LOVE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and if you’re looking for something beyond the traditional chocolates and roses, there are plenty of ways to maximise the Sunshine Coast’s natural wonderland to treat your partner on February 14. Nine News Sunshine Coast weather presenter Nicole Rowles (pictured) shares her four best date ideas. 1. VISIT THE FAIRY POOLS They’re Noosa’s worst-kept secret and for good reason. In my opinion, the Fairy Pools are one of the most beautiful spots on the Coast. Located just a short hike along Noosa National Park’s coastline, these stunning rock pools are more like gorgeous outdoor spas, best enjoyed on low tide (and early in the morning before the crowds roll in). Just picture it – snuggling up beside your partner in the water, a cold drink in hand, looking out on the expanse of the ocean.
2. RIDE A HORSE ALONG THE BEACH It’s the classic, romantic long walk on the beach, but with an exciting twist. Horse riding is such a fun, relaxing way to spend time in the outdoors. A number of companies offer experiences for riders of all abilities, and even let you to take the horses out into the ocean for a swim. It’s picturesque, it’s unique and it’s the ultimate gesture, especially for horse-lovers. 3. KAYAK AMONG WATER LILIES AT LAKE COOTHARABA Imagine picking a path through scores of beautiful floating flowers on board a kayak. Now, that’s a dream date. The surface of parts of Lake Cootharaba is covered by several beautiful species of water lily. Hire a canoe or kayak and take to the water for some slightly more active Valentine’s fun. If you’re up for an even bigger adventure, a number of camping grounds dot the shores of the river. 4. PICNIC ON A MOUNTAINTOP One of my favourite places in the world is the summit of Mount Ngungun. With a gorgeous outlook of the impressive Mount Tibrogargan and the sweeping coastline, it’s a great place to set up a picnic blanket and take in the view with a cool drink. The walk to the Ngungun summit is uphill and a little uneven in places, but the trail is less than three kilometres long. If you swap the picnic

P’Nut Street Noodles is far from your average Thai restaurant. A master of flavours and Asian cooking, Nut Kunlert learned his cooking skills from his grandmother from the age of six. He says the Kawana Shoppingworld restaurant is “the first and only” street noodle restaurant in the country to use authentic sauce bases directly from Thailand. “We aim to transport you to a street-side food stall without you having to leave the country,” Mr Kunlert says. “We understand that a true culinary experience captivates all five senses and gives you an immersive experience, so we bring the bustling street-side stall to you.”
SHOUT OUT! Festival favourites and blues rock powerhouse Mason Rack Band will take to the stage in The Bunker. The winners of Live Act of The Year at the 2018 Gold Coast Music Awards, Mason Rack Band are on fire with their new single Time Again hitting number one on the AMRAP regional charts. Having played 12 international tours and more than 2500 live shows, the boys are dragging blues into the 21st century. The band’s drum duels, on-stage antics
and signature movements set them apart from everything and everyone else. The Mason Rack Band are performing at The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on February 9 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $15 plus booking fee from oztix.com.au or $20 at the door.

KUNG PAO BEEF SALAD WITH SESAME LIME DRESSING Serves four. INGREDIENTS Beef and marinade 400g stir-fry beef (good-quality tender beef such as rump steak) 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 2 tbsp ABC soy sauce 2 tbsp Shaoxing rice wine or dry sherry 2 tbsp black rice wine vinegar or balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp chilli sauce such as siracha 1 tsp crushed garlic 1 tsp crushed ginger Salad 160g fresh bean sprouts (reserve some for garnish) 200g fresh peeled green papaya, julienned 160g carrot, julienned 100g red onion 200g shredded wombok (Chinese cabbage) 50g green shallot onion, finely sliced Freshly picked and washed herbs such as coriander, mint, Thai basil or you can substitute with Vietnamese mint (reserve some coriander for garnish) 100g crushed unsalted roasted peanuts (reserve some peanuts for garnish)
Sesame lime dressing 75ml fish sauce 60ml vegetable oil 75ml fresh lime juice 2 cloves of garlic 1 small knob of ginger 5 tbsp brown sugar 60ml pure sesame oil 3 long red de-seeded chillies
METHOD To make the dressing, blitz all ingredients together in a blender or vitamiser and pass through a fine strainer. Set aside. To make the marinade, combine all ingredients and then add the beef strips. This can be done one hour before, however a day before is even better. Sear off the beef strips in a very hot wok or heavybottomed fry pan and set aside. Assemble the salad ingredients into a large bowl and add the drained beef strips, toss some of the dressing through the salad and lastly add the crushed peanuts. Distribute the salad into four of your fanciest dinner bowls and garnish with extra bean sprouts, herbs and some crushed peanuts.

FOUR INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS OF 2019 The predictions and recommendations are coming in thick and fast. It can be difficult to keep up so we have highlighted four of our favourite home style trends for the year ahead.
Plants The inclusion of greenery in the home is one trend that’s not going away. That said, the way in which we style indoor plants is certainly changing. Stylists are moving towards a concentrated approach by featuring plants in one area rather than throughout the home. Create your own interior jungle with different species in pots of varying sizes and textures, with hanging pots and shelves laden with vines and climbers.
Pictured is Haymes Paint’s Australian Standards Terracotta. Terracotta – will connect the indoors with the outdoors This classic material connects the indoors with the outdoors with its earthy tones and texture. It can be used as a material or as inspiration when it comes to colour.
Pops of colour Soft pastels or small bursts of vibrant colour will weave into our designs. From introducing colour into bathrooms and laundries to furniture, there are no limitations when it comes to palette creativity. Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Living Coral, is a playful yet sophisticated hue, while Dulux’s 2019 palette is a multi-faceted collection of neutrals, bright and deep hues with a hint of the bygone era. It comprises four curated themes: Repair, Wholeself, Legacy and Identity.
Above: INDOORS: The Cancun velvet armchair from Focus on Furniture. Left: OUTDOORS: The Mauritius Wing occasional chair from GlobeWest. Furniture with curves Goodbye clean, sleek lines and hello organic shapes. Mirroring the revival of Art Deco, which is popping up in interior design, furniture designers are taking cues from the era. In addition to rich jewel tones and velvet, the latest style to grow a strong following is curved furniture.
PRODUCT ALERT: The Emilia Large Terracotta Planter is from Domayne.

IN FOCUS – Repair Dulux states: “Reflecting our desire to reconnect with nature and form a deeper understanding of our place in the world, the Repair palette is a collection of earthy neutrals, rich greens and spicy notes of cinnamon and sienna. A cocooning palette that’s very much grounded in nature – it hints at personal growth and fresh beginnings.” It features muted, tonal combinations with a vintage feel.

Year of the
bathroom
A new year is always an exciting time in the world of interior design, with new trends emerging. And when it comes to style, the bathroom is not being left behind. From colourful creations incorporating metallic and terrazzo, through to brushed brass, concrete and timber, the 2019 trends are stylish, sophisticated and ever-so cool. Wesley Sinclair from Highgrove Bathrooms shares his thoughts.
Oliver Clawfoot Bath in pink Pastels Diversifying colour palettes to break up the neutral tones and incorporating a mix of pastel accessories and fittings are a great way to add thoughtful pops of colour to a space that is mostly stark white. “Pale greens, baby blues, lemon yellows, apricot oranges and especially millennial pink are trending hues that will continue to be crowd favourites this year,’’ he says. “Allow your chosen palette to come to life in the cabinetry, as well as smaller fixtures such as robe hooks or basins.

Metallics “The return of brushed brass and copper finishes is showing no signs of slowing down, and it comes as no surprise that these metallics have now become more popular than traditional polished chrome,’’ Mr Sinclair says. Compatible with most colour schemes, brushed brass and copper finishes embody modern elegance and give your bathroom a classic, yet luxurious look.
tip
Material “Timber has definitely become an everlasting favourite when it comes to natural elements used in bathroom design, and while concrete finishes dominated last year’s trends, have you ever considered combining the two?” Mr Sinclair asks. The raw and industrial concrete set against warm timber offers a strikingly contemporary look.
Want to make your bathroom feel luxurious, yet homely? Use warm light globes to bring a sense of comfort.
Wallpaper Wallpaper will be making a comeback in 2019, namely with bold patterns, colours and even textured wallpaper. “It’s a cost-effective and hassle-free way to breathe new life into an outdated space. Bring the splashback to your bathroom in the form of wallpaper instead of tiling to refresh the area around your vanity. But if you’re looking to incorporate more change within your bathroom and make an even bolder statement, consider a feature wall or lining the top third of your bathroom with a remarkable wallpaper. While having a more delicate substance like wallpaper in your bathroom may seem a little risky, with the right splash-proof material you can have the look you want without the hassle of relining every six months.”

With Venus, Saturn and Pluto visiting your relationship zone, your love life is a serious business. Under the influence of Mars, group activities and joint ventures are favoured, as you connect with like-minded people who are going places.

VIRGO (AUG 24 – SEP 23)

Valentine’s Day is an appropriate time to reflect on the fact that love really does make the world go round. Single cats … sparks are set to fly with someone who is creative and spontaneous.
Avoid being overly fussy, Virgo! You’ll have a wonderful week as long as you don’t expect everything to be perfect. Dynamic Mars activates your travel and adventure zone from February 14, so start thinking about where you’ll go for your next holiday.
Attached Libra … make sure you focus your attention on your lover as you give them the right royal romantic treatment this Valentine’s Day. Unhappily single? You could meet your soul mate via an introduction from a family member.
Happy Valentine’s Day, Scorpio! You’re feeling super romantic as you lavish attention (and money) on your partner. Proactive Mars encourages you to spend much more quality time nurturing close relationships in practical ways.

PISCES (FEB 20 – MARCH 20)
Romance is in the air but the energy is behind the scenes, suggesting a private, magical Valentine’s Day. When it comes to your Aquarian aspirations for the future, be proactive. Travel and education are particularly favoured.
Coupled Pisces …with Venus visiting your aspirations zone on Valentine’s Day, find a dream you can share together. “Love does not consist of gazing at each other, but of looking outward together in the same direction” (Antoine St Exupery).

HELP FOR BABY BOOMERS
As online services continue to dominate holiday rentals, more and more owners of Sunshine Coast properties are taking advantage of sites like Airbnb. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
T
he Sunshine Coast is riding high off the back of staggering tourism statistics that show the region is punching well above its weight when it comes to attracting visitors, experiencing the largest growth in tourism numbers across the country in the past 12 months. With that influx of guests comes a desire from property owners to maximise their potential income through holiday letting, and services like Airbnb have been major disrupters for traditional accommodation houses and holiday letting processes in the past 24 months. But there are positive elements to this industry shake-up, with property owners having the ability to maximise shortterm rental returns while opening up new opportunities for visitors to stay and play. Seeing the need for innovation in this realm, Leading Realty Sunshine Coast began offering Airbnb management when it opened an office on Mooloolaba Esplanade in April 2017. Principal Grant Cheatham says with more than one million tourists walking past their office each year, it is an “ideal opportunity” to offer something different. The move paid off. The agency started with five properties in April 2017 and now has 43 on the books located across the Coast from one-bedroom units on the Mooloolaba esplanade to large homes in Maleny and prices ranging from $250 to more than $700 a night. “Using the Airbnb system, we were able to charge the guests for cleaning, linen hire, consumables and critique any other expenses while still being able to give the guests good value and a great holiday,” he says. “Over the trial period the owners were left with more money in their pocket, meaning that during the quieter periods the nightly fees could be reduced for better occupancy rates without getting all the extra costs.” Mr Cheatham says demand for the service remains consistent, with two or three new properties signed up each month to take advantage of their end-to-end property management, which includes a photo shoot, collecting compliance certificates, property upkeep and software that allows owners to see real-time information on their property, which is listed on several high-ranking accommodation sites. “It’s quite easy to self-manage a property but there are some challenges that can stop an owner from being able to do
that,” Mr Cheatham says. “Some problems include the owners of the property not being local, sourcing local and quality suppliers or services, making your property compliant and complying with legislative requirements. “A service like ours is changing the traditional way of management, allowing for more return on your investment, and it’s also giving the investor more options when it comes to holiday letting. Most onsite managers are doing fantastic jobs and for others it may be challenging with more competition in the field and harder to embrace the changes.” Holiday Mooloolaba also began adopting online short-term accommodation websites last year as another vehicle with which to promote their holiday properties. Holiday Mooloolaba’s Janine Gee says the company’s properties are advertised on more than 15 top-rated accommodation websites, with more than 70 per cent of its bookings and inquiries coming from its own website, bookings.com and Airbnb. The remainder are repeat bookings. Ms Gee says businesses like Airbnb have affected the short-term rental market. “We see properties crossing over between permanent lets and holiday lets. Some owners choose to have their properties available only for holiday lets during the December/January period, which allows them to receive a higher return for this period. This doesn’t always work for tenants looking for a long-term permanent rental as they may only be offered a six- to eight-month lease and struggle to find accommodation during the peak seasons,” she says. “It’s difficult to know what long-term impact they may have on management rights. Management rights were impacted last in 2017/18 due to those advertising on Airbnb able to offer the same apartment at a lesser cost than onsite managers not advertising on Airbnb. But like anything, buyer beware. You need to compare not only the advertised nightly rates, but also include other fees and charges.” Still Ms Gee says the future is bright for owners. “The Sunshine Coast is a popular holiday destination and people are looking for different accommodation experiences. Having more accommodation choices available to visitors is a win-win for all. Owners can enjoy the benefits of additional income and the more visitors we get to the Sunshine Coast, the better it is for the local community.”

Baby boomers are invited to attend a seminar today (Friday, February 8) as property industry professionals offer an insight into downsizing, selling and styling your home. Attendees will hear from industry experts who will share their knowledge on how to prepare your home for sale, and what lifestyle options are available to downsizers. Real Estate Institute Queensland (REIQ) media manager Felicity Moore will offer tips on how to choose a real estate agent, how to negotiate the sale of a property and how to maximise your sale price. “I’ll offer some help and insights on how people can find the best real estate agent to suit their needs, and we’ll also look at how to make informed, sensible property-buying decisions,” Ms Moore says. “People who are looking to buy need to do their homework, understand exactly what they want from their purchase and be very clear about the way they want the investment to behave. It all comes back to doing your due diligence. “I’ll also show people where to find all the best information and how to interpret the available data.” Coco Republic Queensland state manager Jodie Hansen will be presenting on how to declutter and style your home. “My presentation will touch on the art of interior decorating with the right scale, palette and placement,” Ms Hansen says. “I’ll be providing tips on how to style your home for sale – the essential rule when styling for sale is to declutter. Remove personal items that you may love to simplify spaces. “There will also be tips and advice on how to decorate your new home, so guests will leave armed with styling advice to make their home the personal sanctuary they’ve always dreamed of.” Halcyon joint managing director Dr Bevan Geissmann, who has been at the forefront of lifestyle community design and management for more than 17 years, will present the different downsizing residential options available. Dr Geissmann says the seminars will offer valuable information on making the home-selling process as pain-free as possible. “Selling your home can be a daunting process and these seminars will certainly help guests create a checklist of what needs to be done,” he says. “There are so many aspects to take into consideration and the seminars will serve as a good foundation for taking the next step from whichever stage you’re in. “There can be a lot involved in downsizing, so these seminars should equip baby boomers with everything they need to be able to make a prepared and informed decision,” he adds.
The seminar will be held on Maroochy River Golf Club on 10am to 1pm. For more phone 1800 626 488.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
No prizes for guessing the surf report this weekend. Pretty much like the last six to eight months. Does it ever end? On the bright side, I was shown the build-up of a certain sand bar recently and it looks very impressive. Will fire on a variety of swell directions. It seems the world is having weird weather patterns everywhere, and very extreme. Townsville floods while Tasmanian burns and America freezes. Chicago recorded minus 48.8. Think about that for a moment. Boiling water is turned to snow instantly! So be happy, you live in a pretty awesome place. Later peeps.
