FROM THE EDITOR

A

s a journalist, I have written about, researched and watched many heart-wrenching stories come out of newsrooms. On Friday, an act that shook the world joined the list of stories forever etched in my mind. When I heard the news coming out of New Zealand, I couldn’t stop listening; my heart sad, my mind reeling. Lives lost, taken suddenly in an act of terror. My heart continues to ache for our neighbours, a nation named as the second most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index 2018. These senseless acts of violence – acts of terrorism driven by unjust anger – need to stop. I do not have the answer and there is no simple solution, but I know it starts with acceptance and humanity. We must stand by each other, regardless of race and religion, show solidarity and prove that love can conquer hate. As New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern penned in a national condolence book on Monday, “…we grieve together. We are one. They are us.” In this week’s edition we share the words of Caloundra graphic designer Kassi Isaac whose sketch of a crying koala hugging a kiwi has been shared around the globe. It is moving, created out of sadness and love, and a perfect symbol of support and solidarity in a time of grief. Her story is on page 18. Until next week, take care.

QUICK CHAT

A MAN ON THE MOVE Where do you live? On acreage in of Buderim. First job? Running a dairy at a caravan park in the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? The day I immigrated to a peaceful country, free of crime and violence.

What are you currently working on? I operate a range of machinery and water pumps in a coal mine, but would love to get back into agriculture.

Your greatest regret? Not joining the Air Force as a helicopter pilot. A private licence is near the top of my wishlist.

Your family includes? The best partner, a school teacher son, marketing guru daughter, her dachshund Penny, ducks Lucky and Herbie, and about half a million bees.

What achievement are you most proud of? I suppose turning a duck farm producing only five per cent of New Zealand’s consumption to 70 per cent in four years. I was breeding, incubating, growing, processing and delivering 3500 ducks per week.

First car? A 1960 Mini. Favourite book? Any by Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. If your life was a book, what would be the title? Pome, Bok, Kiwi, Roo. What are you reading now? Beekeeping, science and cryptocurrency articles.

Greg Kay BIO

r e k r o w fifo

Greg ‘Bear’ Kay went from working as a Military Intelligence Lieutenant to an agronomist in South African sugar estates. In 1994, he immigrated to New Zealand and became a table duck producer. Chasing sunshine, he traded ducks in New Zealand for Australian sugarcane, until the closure of the Moreton mill. Mr Kay is now a FIFO worker in north Queensland for BHP.

IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

Favourite song and why? Bob Marley’s Jamming used to rock my little yellow mini in my uni days. What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? Vikings and Game of Thrones. They are great to watch and there’s a bit of history in there. Also plenty of YouTube videos on different beekeeping practices. Bees make the rules, we obey.

You are happiest when? Doing a road trip, along the coast or into the country.

“Think longer and look in all directions before making a decision”

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Surf daily, if Huey blesses us with waves. Best advice you’ve been given? Most people are stopped by themselves. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? Sneaky Baron in Ocean Street. It has weird and wonderful beers, great food and atmosphere.

What frustrates you the most? Bad drivers who think they know the road rules but are actually clueless. How do you deal with your frustrations? Dig a hole in the garden and fill it in again. It doesn’t happen often, but it’s handy for tree planting. If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Think longer and look in all directions before making a decision.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? My mum (to cook) with my dad’s parents Ernie and Alice. None is still with us, but it would be one hell of a party. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? A retirement hobby farm in the hinterland (there are great soils and climate up there), and some space to get some more beehives, ducks and an area to rehabilitate native waterfowl and birds.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? With all the sand pumping along the central coast, beaches have become ‘bankless’. A few artificial reefs would generate consistent waves, slow sand movement and create sealife habits.

Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Coffee, iced or latte.

Best day in your life and why? Two days – the birthdays of my kids. They are the best kids you could wish for.

Know someone interesting on the Sunshine Coast? Email leigh@myweeklypreview.com.au.

NRL or AFL? Neither. Rugby Union. I’m South African born, so it’s compulsory.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

DID YOU KNOW? Your television could be listening to your private conversations? A few years ago Samsung advised customers to watch what they say around smart TVs because of a voice recognition feature, which captures data that can be transmitted to a third party.

FEATURE STORY

IS YOUR TECHNOLOGY SPYING ON YOU?

Our smartphones, computers, TVs and cars have the ability to listen to our conversations and track our location. With privacy of paramount concern, we look at the measures you can take today to protect yourself. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

You also have to be careful what you discuss in front of your TV these days. Smart TVs have microphones and cameras installed…

D

o you feel like technology is getting creepier by the day? Monitoring your every move, listening to your private conversations, knowing your whereabouts, where you work and what TV shows you like? No, you’re not paranoid. Your technology is spying on you in a number of ways. The good news is, it’s mostly benign and if you’re worried about anything malicious, you can take steps to protect yourself. If you’ve ever had a conversation with someone and then coincidentally received an Instagram notification about that very subject, or a related ad has popped up on Facebook, you could be forgiven for feeling a little freaked out. Is your phone really listening in on your conversation? Facebook has denied it targets ads by spying on your conversations and while the tech company has done some dodgy things in the past, like changing everyone’s default privacy settings without their permission in 2010, this isn’t one of them. Theoretically, it could listen in, but it would require automated voice recognition programs designed to listen to almost two billion people’s conversations and translate that into data for advertisers. It would be a monumental data gathering exercise that experts say is unfeasible, not to mention unethical.

10 My Weekly Preview | March 22, 2019

10.indd 1

In addition, to listen in and sell the contents of your conversations to advertisers, Facebook would be violating Apple and Google’s terms of service. Facebook has said it only accesses your microphone if you’ve given it permission and if you’re using a feature that requires audio, like the video camera. Facebook says it does not access your microphone just because the app is opened, nor when

if you don’t, there’s no need to have it switched on and it may give you a little peace of mind to switch it off. So is it just a coincidence you see ads about the subjects of your conversations? Not quite, according to Sunshine Coast IT solutions specialist, Richard Mueller. “I always get targeted ads, but it’s usually based on websites I’ve looked at. “Sometimes people don’t realise they’ve gone and looked at websites and they also

“Sometimes people don’t realise they’ve gone and looked at websites and they also talk about the websites they’ve looked at” Richard Mueller

you’re not using the app. If you don’t trust a word Facebook says, you can go to your phone settings and turn off the microphone for Facebook, Instagram and other apps you’re worried could be spying on you. If you regularly upload videos to Facebook or Instagram, the apps need to have access to your phone’s microphone. But

talk about the websites they’ve looked at,’’ he says. “Maybe it’s not a link between the actual conversation and the ad popping up, it’s related to other things they’ve done.” So what looks like a targeted ad is, but not because your phone has spied on your conversation, but because of all the information apps like Facebook gather

about you. Every time you click ‘like’, install an app using your Facebook profile or click on an ad, it’s adding to a profile on you that can be sold to advertisers. While Mr Mueller isn’t too concerned about the idea of our technology spying on us, he does caution users about the importance of security on your devices. “Older Android phones never receive updates, so they’re never patched for security,” he says. “Vulnerabilities that have been exposed in later versions of software aren’t exposed. With iOS phones, the majority of people who own one of those go through the process of automatically updating them every time there’s a new version of the software released. “That means any flaws that have been identified, which could potentially make your phone vulnerable to attack, have been patched. Also, it’s possible on Android phones to install apps from an external access point. “With iOS phones, you can only install apps from the App Store, but with Android you can specify that you want to install apps from other locations, not just the Google Play Store. “Apps from the app store are better because they make sure they fit in with the guidelines that Apple specify.” Which brings us to spyware apps, something you do need to be aware of. If someone has access to your phone, they can myweeklypreview.com.au

DID YOU

KNOW Internet-connected toys have become a concern in recent years with reports they are collecting data about our children. In 2017 Germany banned the popular My Friend Cayla doll, which is available in Australia, labelling it a “concealed surveillance device.

GET PROTECTED • Go to the apps on your phone that use the microphone and toggle the green button off if you don’t need it. • Ensure you have anti-malware software installed on your computer. • Don’t open emails or attachments that look suspicious. • Put some tape over the camera on your computer and smart TV. • Turn off location services if you don’t need them. • Never give away private information unless you have to.

TURN IT

OFF How to stop Facebook, Amazon and Siri listening to you If you are an iPhone user, go to Settings >> Facebook and slide the Microphone switch to the left, so it turns from green to white. That turns it off. Alternatively, you can go to Settings >> Privacy >> Microphone, then look for Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and other apps that use the mic and do the same. For Android users: Try Settings >> Applications >> Application Manager >> look for Facebook >> Permissions >> Turn off the mic. Here’s the easiest way to turn off “Hey Siri: Navigate to your iOS device’s Settings >> General >> Siri, then toggle Allow “Hey Siri to off. Here’s how to turn off the “OK Google “ wake phrase: On Android, just go to Settings >> Google >> Search & Now >> Voice and turn “Ok Google detection off.

install spyware apps like mSpy, Flexispy, Hoverwatch and Mobile Spy. Spy apps can be used for good purposes, such as parents monitoring their children, but these apps can be used by anyone, from disgruntled lovers to employers spying on employees. There’s an even easier way people can spy on your conversations – but they have to have an iPhone and Apple AirPods. “You can put the phone in listening mode, leave it on your desk, walk away into the next room and listen to what’s happening through your AirPods, says Mr Mueller. “In the past you could press record, but now you can actively listen. Apple thinks it’s a good device for people with hearing impairments because they can put their phone close to the TV and listen through their headphones. Apple’s Live Listen was part of the iOS 12 update, released on September 17 last year. The ‘eavesdropping’ feature was an unintended consequence of Live Listen. Be warned: if you are discussing something private, make sure there are no random iPhones nearby. You also need to be careful what you discuss in front of your TV these days. Smart televisions have microphones and cameras installed and can capture sensitive personal information discussed in their vicinity. Samsung drew criticism in 2015 when it

issued this warning: “Please be aware that if your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party. In some of its smart TVs, the microphone is always listening. In March 2018, consumer watchdog Choice issued a warning about smart TVs, saying just like your PC, smartphone and computer, your smart TV runs the risk of being “compromised by unscrupulous types if it’s hooked up to a network. There are a number of vulnerabilities that hackers can exploit, including access to inbuilt cameras, files stored on the TV and communication apps like Skype. “It’s probably something to be concerned about, says Mr Mueller. “A lot of smart TVs have cameras on them. They’re not monitored like a computer. You can’t install software that protects you like anti-virus software or anti-malware software on a TV, so it’s in the hands of the manufacturers and if it’s connected to the internet, it could be hacked by third parties. Mr Mueller advises covering up computer and TV cameras if concerned – there’s a famous photo online of Mark Zuckerberg with a piece of tape over his laptop’s camera. You may not be as important as the big Mr Z, but if he thinks there’s reason to cover up a computer’s camera, it may be a tip worth following.

Keyvan Ansari

ON THE PLUS SIDE‌ Voice technology is way cool. Being able to say “hey Siriâ€? or “okay Googleâ€? and ask any question you like is useful. Virtual assistants like Amazon’s Alexa listen to your commands so you can remotely control things in your house like lights, locks and heating. Amazon’s Alexacontrolled Echo speaker is a wireless speaker you can control with your voice. You can play music search the web, make shopping lists or order pizza, all while your smartphone stays in your pocket. Dr Keyvan Ansari is a lecturer in information and communication technology at the University of the Sunshine Coast. He specialises in location-based services, vehicular navigations, car-to-car talk and positioning. He says technologies like dedicated short range communications (DSRC) and cellular vehicle to everything (CVTE) involve our cars spying on us – but in a good way. “It will improve road safety and save lives,â€? he says. “These systems can provide warnings to users to slow down and are useful for navigation. They can help you pre-plan your journey and help you take the best route to save fuel.â€? While he’s excited about the possibilities voice-recognition technology and tracking systems for vehicles offers, he does have a word of warning. “Privacy could be compromised and there are instances where the system could be hacked and later on with self-driving vehicles, an attacker could take control of the vehicle through wireless communication. There are concerns about that, but the benefits if can have are not something we can ignore. It’s about saving lives.â€?

TILLS AT THE READY We are counting down the days until the opening of the new addition to Sunshine Plaza, which will feature the region’s first David Jones store. The Property Council of Australia’s Shopping Centres Online defines a superregional shopping centre as one “typically incorporating two full-line department stores, one or more full-line discount department stores, two supermarkets and approximately 250 specialty shops.” Lendlease managing director of retail Gary Horwitz says the expansion is expected to generate 2300 additional retail jobs for the region. “Sunshine Plaza now has some of the biggest national brands and most sought-after specialty stores, so locals no longer need to travel to Brisbane for their ideal shopping experience – everything they need, and more, is right here,” he says. David Jones regional manager Rowena Derksen says their highly anticipated store is spread over an 8000-square metre single floor, offering a full range of fashion, beauty, kids and homewares as well as a cafe. “We are investing in a world-class store that will deliver an outstanding shopping experience for our customers,” she says.

“We’re really looking forward to bringing our signature instore services to the Coast, including David Jones Personal Shopping, a complimentary service where our expert personal shoppers work one on one with you in our Personal Shopping Suite to find looks that you feel fantastic in.” More than 1000 applicants sent in resumes for the chance to secure one of the 75 positions at the store and Ms Derksen says the store is “thrilled to have an overwhelming response to work with us”. “We’re very excited to be unveiling an extensive range of the best of local and international brands, tailored specifically for our Sunshine Coast shoppers,” she says. They include Giorgio Armani, La Mer, Estée Lauder, Jo Malone and M.A.C in the beauty department and Bec + Bridge, Aje, Witchery, Camilla, C&M and Tigerlily in ladieswear. The gents can enjoy Polo Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Politix, Rodd & Gunn and Anthony Squires and kids will look funky

“The total expansion adds 35,000 square metres of retail space”

R

etail offerings across the Sunshine Coast have been increasing with dizzying speed in the past 12 months and the opening of the second stage of the Sunshine Plaza refurbishment will give Coast shoppers access to more big-name brands. With construction first beginning in September 2016, the second stage of the $440 million redevelopment will open on March 28. It will feature the region’s first

David Jones and H&M stores, as well as a new Big W. The total expansion adds 35,000 square metres of retail space to the existing centre, and includes more than 100 additional specialty stores such as MECCA, Sheike, lululemon, Seed Heritage, Endota Spa, JB Hi-Fi, Kathmandu and Baku. The milestone has catapulted the Plaza’s status to “super-regional shopping centre” and is the first located north of Brisbane.

LOCAL NEWS

THE PICTURE WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS A Caloundra artist’s illustration has touched hearts around the world in the aftermath of the Christchurch massacre. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

s news rippled around the world about last week’s massacre, which left 50 people dead and 50 injured at two Christchurch mosques, a Caloundra woman struggled to deal with the news. Professional illustrator and graphic designer Kassi Isaac picked up a pencil and poured her sadness into a simple but poignant sketch. Something about her touching illustration depicting a koala hugging a kiwi struck a chord with the online community when Mrs Isaac shared it on her Instagram page. High-profile identities including Mia Freedman and Jessica Rowe shared the image, along with Channel 7’s Sunrise. The illustration has now gone viral, being shared across Facebook, Twitter and Reddit, capturing the Australian sentiment towards our New Zealand neighbours on what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardhern described as New Zealand’s darkest day. “I felt like I really wanted to do something because it’s such a horrible thing that no words can describe,” Mrs Isaac says. “I was just doodling on the back of my daughter’s sketchbook but already in my mind I was pretty firm with what it would look like. “I’ve tried to keep my daughter a little distant from the event as its very upsetting and very hard to explain to a five-year-old. I just told her, ‘something really bad happened’. But when she saw the sketch I drew, she asked what it was and why the animals were so sad. “I said it was a little koala consoling a kiwi about the ‘really bad thing’ that happened that day. She looked at it, visually upset, grabbed a red pen and drew a heart above and said, ‘this will make it better’. I thought, yep, that completes it.”

2.7P.A. RATE

After putting her daughter to bed that Friday night, Mrs Isaac couldn’t sleep and decided to render the illustration and post it to Instagram. “I wanted to share what was in my heart, share a bit of grace, love, light and unity for all and to somehow visually say how I felt. I really like the image because it’s not a race, it’s not a religion, there’s a humanity in it. There’s some innocence and pure emotion captured.” When she woke up and saw how many times her image had been shared, how many comments poured in from as far away as London and Los Angeles, she was humbled. Mrs Isaac grew up on the Sunshine Coast and moved to

Sydney after school, working as a packaging designer for major confectionary companies before returning to live on the Sunshine Coast and work for the Sunshine Coast Council. She resigned last year to focus on her family and is hoping to launch her own business later this year, an illustrative-based children’s clothing label featuring koalas – but they won’t be sad like the koala that has found its way into the hearts of millions. “With this illustration I was hoping to put the love or the feeling back into what’s happened,” she says. “Hopefully we can have more unity and acceptance and tolerance. I think Prime Minister Ardern has been amazing. I was talking to my husband about it. I think it’s horrific, but she’s the best prime minister for what’s happened. “I think it’s really important the victims feel supported and New Zealand feels supported. It’s so tragic with 50 dead and so many injured. If you think of the children or husbands or wives that have been affected, then it’s directly going to affect that number again. You’re just ripping apart families on such a huge scale. I think what’s scary and touching for us in Australia is it’s too close to home. It could have been here.” To offer your support, visit givealittle.co.nz/cause/ christchurch-shooting-victims-fund

RUNNING FOR A GOOD CAUSE Grab your runners and sign up for the annual Wishlist Fun Run.

H

undreds of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service staff will join local businesses and families at the annual Wishlist Fun Run on March 31. Training is well underway at the hospital as the region’s newest doctors from Griffith University get ready to participate in the fun-fuelled run around Lake Kawana. The doctors will take on teams from several local businesses and first-year Griffith University medical student

Hamish Hamilton says the Fun Run is a great opportunity for him and his fellow students to get to know the area while helping to raise funds for local patients and families. “Many of us are new to the area and are keen to be part of these great community events,” he says. “Wishlist is our local health foundation so we want to support them and the work they do for the hospital, its patients and health staff across the region. The Fun Run is a great way for the Sunshine Coast community to have some fun and help Wishlist continue the important work they do.” Mr Hamilton says he and his teammates are looking forward to a bit of competition. Wishlist events manager Lisa Wilson says last year’s event saw more than 500 participants raise $25,000 for the foundation and the 2019 event is shaping up to be bigger and better. “This is the first year we’ve offered a corporate team category. We’re hoping to get lots of businesses onboard to run, have fun and help raise vital funds for the local health service,” she says. “Competitors will be able to run the entire lakeside track for the first time, looping around the lake via the new Stockland Birtinya. It’s a beautiful circuit and a great way to spend a Sunday morning.” Entries are now open for families, individuals, groups and businesses to register for the five-kilometre family walk and run, 10-kilometre run or the Kids Dash all while raising money for hospital patients and their families. Visit wishlist.org.au for more information and to sign up.

SPILLING SMALL BUSINESS SECRETS She is known as the Consumer Futurist and Amanda Stevens will be sharing her wisdom to all who attend the next Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Better Business Breakfast. Ms Stevens is a renowned global thought leader who will share her insights into how you can build your brand in changing times by looking at current consumer trends and showcase the research that is being conducted into buying behaviour. “There has never been a better time to be in small business than right now,” she says. Her presentation will cover the six keys to creating a memorable customer experience and offer “practical strategies on how you can maximise the opportunity to turn your customers into walking, raving fans.” Ms Stevens will also explain why the combination of high tech and high touch is the next frontier in brand disruption and help you to decode and develop the science of advocacy for your business. The old adage that the ‘customer is always right’ still holds sway in this evolving business climate and Ms Stevens will show how to cultivate customer centricity, what it means to put customers first and why existing customer bases are the greatest hidden asset in any business.

The Better Business Breakfast with Amanda Stevens is on March 29 from 6.15am to 8.45am at Venue 114. Tickets are available at caloundrachamber.com.au.

PROFILE

LIFE AFTER MAFS

Married at First Sight’s Heidi Latcham has returned to live on the Sunshine Coast where she grew up and says there’s nowhere in the world she’d rather be. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

IMAGE: NINE NETWORK

S

he’s warm, outgoing, friendly and approachable, ble, not to mention drop-dead gorgeous. But Heidi Latcham atcham says she never gets asked out. It’s the reason she put her life on hold to join Married at First Sight (MAFS) MAFS) and ‘marry’ Gold Coast electrician Mike Gunner. While e the show finished filming last year, it’s still screening. So she he can’t spill the beans on how her relationship with Mr Gunner ner has worked out, but she’s happy to chat about her new life e on the Sunshine Coast as a radio presenter on 91.9 Sea FM doing oing breakfast with BarRat. “I’m from here originally but I haven’t lived back here permanently for a few years,” she says. “It’s so nice to be back here and I just want to stay here forever. This is it. t. This is home for me. It’s so nice for me being able to do my dream job in my dream town.” Ms Latcham was working as a radio presenter in Townsville last year when she got the call to join MAFS S and spent the second half of the year living in Melbourne and filming the show. “I’m so glad I did it,” she says. “I’m so grateful for all the lessons it taught me. I went in as one person and came e out as a different person. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done. one. It was emotionally, physically and mentally exhausting, but so worthwhile. I learnt so much about myself and so much about other people. I learnt about life and that’s something ething I will take away with me for the rest of my life. “I’ve learnt that I can be a stronger person than I thought. h ht Sometimes I could be very sensitive, sometimes I would crumble. I feel bolder now than I have ever. I feel tougher, I feel like I can do anything now. Before I thought I was a bit wary of things but now – this is the most hardcore thing I’ve ever done. I’ve done some crazy things and taken a lot of chances.” Which begs the question – why has she found it so hard to meet the right man? “I never get asked out,” she says. “I added up all my boyfriends and worked out which ones I had been set up with and which ones I’d met organically – over half I was set up with. I just never get approached by guys and now I’m 38, I don’t have any more friends to set me up with any more boyfriends. I’m single and have no babies. They’re all married with kids. It’s hard to meet people and internet dating didn’t work for me. I hated it. “I don’t feel like I’m intimidating,” she adds. “I don’t feel like I give off a bad vibe.

“I feel like I’m open. I thought, ‘what am I doing wrong?’ I don’t understand.” Ms Latcham went on the show genuinely hoping to find love and as viewers would know, has experienced an emotional rollercoaster with Mr Gunner. Now the show’s over, she can look back at the experience and see both positive and negative. “I’d only ever watched one season last year,” she says. “I just went on it based on that. I saw people fall in love on that, so I was hopeful what it could do for me. Watching it back this year it’s wilder and more intense than I think it’s ever been. Sometimes I watch it and go ‘oh my god are people really like that?’ Being part of it I was thinking exactly the same – ‘who are these people? What on earth, what are you doing? Where did your morals come from?’.” But she does see a place for the show, which is described as a ‘social experiment’. “As crazy as it is for society and sometimes it’s full-on and very disruptive, it also creates a

lot of conversation that sometimes needs to be had. If it’s done in a conscious way it’s okay.” With her blonde ringlets and big smile, Ms Latcham is easy to recognise and is being stopped a lot in the street now she’s back on the Sunshine Coast. “Everyone is so lovely,” she says. “Everyone has been so kind and embracing and I’ve been getting the most beautiful messages I’ve ever got. Everyone has been amazing and I feel so loved. I also find it weird. I can’t understand it. I’m on TV. It’s just me, no big deal.” Ms Latcham grew up here and went to Buderim Mountain State School and Maroochydore State High School. She was in foster care from the age of 16 and discussed some of her painful childhood memories on the show – which Mr Gunner famously rejected, telling her she was “ranting”. But it wasn’t all bad – she has many happy memories too. “I remember riding my bike everywhere and I still love riding my bike. I love the beach, the outdoors, the mozzies, the frogs, the sand, the fish and chips, summer – I love summer so much. The smell of this place, the feeling – it feels really sparkly to me. “Every time I move and come back, it’s changed. It’s getting better. There are new areas opening up, new food places, another cinema now. It’s getting better but you still have your hubs. I still think we have the best beaches here in the world.” Now settled in to her new radio job, she’s looking for a place to live that will allow her to ride her bike everywhere. “I just want to enjoy living here as much as I can,” she says. “After this whole MAFS thing I assessed everything. I thought ‘right, what do I want in my life? Where do I want to be?’ It was definitely the Coast. I want to set some roots up. I want to buy ornaments here. I don’t want to move again.” Ms Latcham would dearly love to have children but says she’s turning 39 this year and feels time is running out. “But if I had kids, there’s nowhere else I’d rather bring them up.” For now, she’s focusing on work and creating a happy life. “I’ve done lots of courses over the years, read lots of books, done various practices and meditation. What I’ve done is taken a bit of everything and gone with what I know is true. I’ve tried to develop my own inner compass as strongly as I could. “Instead of going to a psychic, I ask myself the questions. I try to develop myself and I still am every single day. I can give myself the guidance. I can be my own best guide.”

BUSINESS & FINANCE

Chris Harris, Ord Minnett Buderim.

WHAT NEXT FOR THE NATION’S MONETARY POLICY?

O

rd Minnett recently examined the downgrade by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) of its growth outlook for the economy, and the possibility of an interest rate cut was hinted at in its February meeting minutes. This more dovish stance from Australia’s central bank on the outlook for rates helped markets rally through the month of February. Ord Minnett now expects the RBA to cut its benchmark cash rate in 2019, although timing is uncertain. As a starting point, recent data suggests that the economy slowed sharply in the second half of 2018. This is significant

because it lowers the starting point for the RBA’s growth forecasts, and implies that the 2019 growth estimate will be marked lower in May’s Statement on Monetary Policy. We expect the RBA to cut its forecast for GDP growth in the year to June 2019 to 1.75 to two per cent from its prior estimate of 2.5 per cent. A forecast revision of this magnitude is no longer consistent with the

“Ord Minnett now expects the RBA to cut its benchmark cash rate in 2019, although timing is uncertain.” central bank’s previous expectation of a lower unemployment rate and a gradual rise in inflation. Worryingly, the trajectory of household consumption looks weaker after recent data releases, highlighting the impact of negative wealth effects and/or the impact of persistently low levels of income growth on household consumption.

The RBA has for some time characterised weakness in household consumption as a key downside risk to the economy, and the recent data provides solid evidence that this risk is being realised. Considering this information, there are reasons the RBA should not be too tardy in its policy response as core inflation ran at 1.8 per cent in 2018 and shows no signs of accelerating. This would be an uncomfortable starting point for a cyclical growth slowdown, especially when the central bank’s target range is two to three per cent over time. We concede that we may be wrong on the rate cut story in 2019 if fiscal stimulus is delivered quickly – and predominantly to the household sector – via electioneering. Both sides of politics could offer a significant level of stimulus in the run-up to the election. The federal budget on April 2 will thus be an important marker. Watch this space. HILL BIDS USC GOODBYE University of the Sunshine Coast ViceChancellor Professor Greg Hill says he will retire next year after leading USC through a decade of rapid expansion. Professor Hill, who has transformed USC from a single campus with 9000 students in 2011 to a multi-campus institution that will have more than 18,000 students in total this year, will finish work in late 2020. “Since I’ve been here, there hasn’t been a year that we haven’t opened a new building, and that includes new campuses at Gympie in 2013, Fraser Coast in 2016 and Caboolture last year,” he says. He has also overseen the establishment of the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute, Clinical Trials Centre and expansion of USC’s sporting precinct to accommodate three elite national sporting teams.

MY OPINION

REBECCA GIBNEY KEEPS IT REAL

A KINDER APPROACH

Sami Muirhead was smitten when she met Rebecca Gibney on her recent visit to the Sunshine Coast, taking away a number of life lessons from the star.

Richard O’Leary says whether we can prove animals share our emotions is beside the point. We should treat them as if they do.

L

ord knows, we need middle-aged women to be great role models because we are being covered in an avalanche of fake, filtered and phony women who make it seem as if their lives are picture perfect and flawless when it comes to Instagram and Facebook. I never expected to walk away from meeting Rebecca Gibney with a new role model and with a little spring in my step. I had a little refresher course in the importance of random acts of kindness and that it is okay to take time out for me. I was smitten by the Gold Logie winner’s honesty, humility and wisdom. I always liked Rebecca Gibney. Everyone does, I guess. She has been a familiar face on our TV screens for more than 30 years. But in real life, the New Zealand actress is luminescent, both physically and in the way she handles herself. Rebecca glows goodness. And is so damn real. She is vulnerable and strong. She told an audience of 500 she came from a dysfunctional family, as her dad was a violent alcoholic. There it was. The facts. There was no drama. No pity. Just the facts. There was no perfect childhood. Rebecca went on to say how she suffered anxiety and low self-esteem for much of her life. “When I was 32 I had a major mental collapse because I had so much selfloathing. I could not leave my house; I was on Valium and I wanted to die. Being in that dark place for so long taught me about

self-care. I actually wrote a letter to my mum explaining I wanted to die. I thought at the time, she will never understand and because of that I just could not kill myself. I wanted to die, but I went on to have heaps of therapy and slowly started to realise it is okay to be honest and vulnerable. So if you are feeling low, please get help.” I had a brief private chat to Rebecca after she addressed the crowd gathered for International Women’s Day thanks to the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network. I told her how I suffer so much mum guilt and work guilt and bad wife guilt. She looked me in the eyes and said: “It is not being arrogant to think you are good. It took me until my forties to realise it is okay to say you are good. I am way more interesting now than when I was in my twenties.” Rebecca had earlier told the crowd, “The other big lesson I have learnt is to just try to be in the moment more. Whatever you are doing give it 100 per cent of your focus and do not give it 90 per cent while the other 10 per cent of you is planning dinner while you are in a work meeting or worrying about that medical appointment while you are watching your child play soccer.” Rebecca is clearly a high achiever and this is what makes her an unexpected role model for fighting the good fight against the inner demons. Gals like Rebecca show all our generations that we do not become invisible once we hit 40, but in fact become who we are truly meant to be.

s far as bets go, you don’t get much bigger than Pascal’s Wager. French philosopher Blaise Pascal came up with the theory in the 17th Century – its basic premise being that if you are a rational person you should live as though God exists. His reason? Well, if God does not exist you have only deprived yourself of finite things such as some pleasure and luxuries – a relatively small price to pay. But, if God does exist you receive infinite gifts including eternity in Heaven – so the reward is big, as big as it gets in fact. So, Pascal posited that when you look at what is at stake you would be mad to be anything but a believer. Why am I mentioning this? Well, what if you extrapolate this thought to other areas of your life? I read an article the in The New York Times by primatologist Frans de Waal who argued that uniquely human emotions don’t exist. He believes we share emotions with other species, just as we share virtually every organ in our bodies with them. This is not the prevailing view of science, but ask anyone who owns a dog whether their mutt ever feels happy, sad, or guilty. When I say “walk” my dog Truman wags his tail and jumps up excitedly. Conversely, if I have mentioned that word but make no movement to go to the car, he slinks away, hope dashed, disappointed. And no one can tell me Truman doesn’t

feel guilty when he grabs food off the table and swallows it down before I can catch him. Okay, he may only be acting like he is remorseful – but even if he is, surely that behaviour is driven by another feeling – fear of getting into trouble. But it’s not just me and Mr de Waal who believe animals can feel emotions. He cites the case of our closest living relative (along with chimpanzees) the bonobo. When a bonobo injures another of its species, it goes back to make amends by licking and cleaning the wound it has

“When you look at what is at stake you would be made to be anything but a believer…”

inflicted. If this is not remorse, what is it? I can hear some of you saying, “Well that’s hardly concrete evidence”. But what if you are wrong, and our dogs, and cats, and cows and sheep do share the same emotions we do? What if those chooks in the cages and pigs in the pens feel the same despair and desperation as humans do when they are locked up? Is the risk worth more than the reward? Are you willing to bet on it?

Richard O’Leary is a journalist, a political adviser and a father who knows there’s a deeper meaning to life, but struggles to find it.

FOODIE FIND

MYSTERY WITH A TWIST Audiences are integral to the plot of this unique theatre experience.

T

he Coolum Theatre Players kicks off its performance calendar with Murder’s in the Heir, a fun, fast-paced murder mystery, and audiences will be a huge part of the action. Director Michael Healy has put together a fabulous cast of 14 Sunshine Coast actors who will bring this interactive show to life when they take to the stage at the Coolum Civic Centre in Park Street. The plot is tantalising. Tyrannical billionaire Simon Starkweather gathers his family and employees to announce the contents of his will, but then his lawyer delivers a bombshell – within hours this will becomes invalid. Of course, the rejected heirs are not pleased and soon afterwards, a murder takes place. Almost every character in this hilarious mystery has the weapon, opportunity and motive. However, here’s the twist – it’s up to the audience to decide who actually did it.

“The fun part about this play is that every show could be different,” Mr Healy says. “After act one, the audience will be asked to cast a vote on who they think the murderer is, and based on the highest vote, the cast will then play out that outcome.” The challenge for the players is that they need to be on their toes and be prepared for a different decision at each show. Murder is in the Heir is on March 22 to 24 and 29 to 31 with four evening shows and two matinees. Seating is arranged as tables of eight, and audience members are invited to bring their own drinks and snacks. You can buy individual tickets or a whole table by visiting North Shore Realty in Coolum, calling 5446 2500, or visiting coolumtheatre.com.au.

CLASSICAL GUITAR DUO EMBARK ON GRATITUDE TOUR how their art flows through them, not from them – they are mere conduits. And so it is for the Grigoryan Brothers, whose performances are marked by an intangible connection to the soul of the music they play. While it is their individual and combined artistry that brings the music alive, they are forever grateful to the composers and arrangers who have provided the framework from which they speak. For this performance, the brothers are honouring those past, present and future who have provided the fuel for their fire by performing some favourite works from their back-catalogue of recordings – from Bach to Towner, and Tchaikovsky to Lovelady. The brothers will also be performing their own compositions and arrangements, including a selection from the soundtrack to the movie A Boy Called Sailboat, which they wrote and recorded and is due for global release in 2019. The Grigoryan Brothers’ Gratitude Tour is at Venue 114 on March 29 at 7.30pm. Tickets are available at venue114.com.au.

Justifiably regarded as Australia’s finest guitar duo, the Grigoryan Brothers takes the classical guitar into genres such as jazz, folk and contemporary music. With a repertoire spanning centuries, continents and genres, the pair has the ability to draw emotion from every note – there seem to be no boundaries, only new frontiers for Slava and Leonard Grigoryan. It is not uncommon to hear painters, sculptors, writers and musicians speak of

when war breaks out in Europe in 1914. From the relative comfort of the family mansion, the newly minted and woefully ill-prepared doctor journeys to a field hospital in a remote part of the empire run by the efficient, mysterious Sister Margarete. There, Lucius’s limited medical training is exposed but developed by the hardships of the makeshift medical set-up and the devastating injuries he must try to mend. He grows, as a man and a surgeon, but is soon tested by the winter soldier, a patient suffering a new kind of disease. Lucius eventually, and it seems inevitably, fails his patient and himself, and spends the rest of the war and the years that follow trying to make amends. But redemption comes at a cost. This is a heartbreaking novel beautifully told thanks to the American writer’s sensitive touch.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

After three weeks in retrograde mode, Mercury (your patron planet) finally moves forwards in your relationship zone, so all forms of communication should gradually improve as you express yourself in more direct and digestible ways.

Don’t waste energy worrying, especially at work. Mercury turns direct, so it’s a good week to re-connect with colleagues and tell them what’s on your mind. Venus encourages you to look at a relationship in a perceptive new light.

Mercury moves forwards (from Thursday onwards), so don’t fret about things you can’t control. Be proactive about projects where you can actually influence the outcome. Thursday is the best day of the week, when a romance is boosted.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

The planets precipitate a romantic or friendship shake-up as you reassess your relationship priorities. But, under the influence of extravagant Venus and Jupiter, you could blow your budget with a spontaneous spending spree.

Do your best to be extra sensitive to the needs of others this week. From Monday until Wednesday, retrograde Mercury stirs up relationship insecurities, and you may have to handle a loved one with kid gloves!

With Venus shifting into Pisces and Mercury finally moving forwards (both in your $$$ zone), financial matters are about to improve. Thursday through Sunday is a particularly auspicious time to brainstorm creative ways to save money.

As the week progresses, things will gradually improve as lucky Venus transits into Pisces and Mercury moves forwards in your sign. There’s one proviso, though … keep grounded. Don’t get so stirred up that you lose sight of where you are actually heading.

UP TO HALF OF HOME SALES COME FROM PRINT ADS It’s more important than ever for sellers to use all marketing channels to get the best price for their property. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he urgency for buyers to snap up Sunshine Coast properties as soon as they are listed has reduced, but the region is still flush with savvy buyers who are waiting for the right property to pop up on their radar. My Property Preview reporter Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane has spoken with high-profile Sunshine Coast agents and found that those who use a holistic marketing strategy are continuing to get the best possible prices for their properties.

Ray White Caloundra director Andrew Garland says there are plenty of buyers around, but the onus is on sellers to price their property correctly as there is “less urgency amongst buyers to act”. “Last year, buyers were feeling that if they don’t get in, they will miss out and now they feel if they jump in too quickly, they might pay too much,” he says. “The net result of this is that figures reported by realestate.com.au show properties listed with a price can

blow out past 90 days on market. If properties aren’t listed with the correct price and don’t sell in the first week or two of listing, they are destined for a long sit on the market in the absence of a price change from the seller.” Mr Garland says the exception to the rule is properties that are taken to auction. “When you take the price off and add a sale date, the buyers who are attracted to those properties are seemingly more motivated to buy,” he says. “We are seeing good numbers on properties taken to auction and, for example, we had an in-room auction with five properties and 24 registered bidders across the five. Three of them sold under the hammer. “I have been auctioning properties since I moved here 14 years ago and in a booming market, auction and listed pricing work the same, but when it goes slightly quiet, auction always outperforms.” But no matter which method of sale you are considering, Mr Garland says a consistent rule across the board is a holistic marketing strategy. “I take the view that you will only get the highest price you can if everyone within reason knows the property is for sale,” he says. “Because of the circulation of something like My Weekly Preview, we open the market up to everybody within the circulation area of the product, whereas with online people tend to confine their search to one particular suburb, which is how those portals are set up. So they might be looking online at Moffat Beach and completely miss the opportunity

PROPERTY waiting for them at Alexandra Headland,” he says. “We have between 30 and 50 per cent of our buyer enquiries come from print and there’s plenty of research out there to suggest that days on market are shorter and sale prices are higher for those people who combine print and online marketing. My own experience shows that’s definitely the case and any agents who don’t offer it are doing their clients a disservice.” Define Property principal and auctioneer Ross Cattle says it has been “business as usual” across his patch in Mooloolaba, Birtinya, Buderim and surrounds. “We are finding realistic owners are still achieving solid prices for their homes, buyer numbers are still good with maybe a little more stock becoming available but nothing too drastic in terms of properties flooding to the marke. I think this year sellers are looking for more seasoned agents and agencies that can provide a platform that maximises the reach to buyers, the cheap offering agencies don’t and can’t offer the same exposure and this year feels like clients more than ever want a more professional approach,” he says. “I think last year, with a few more buyers around, there wasn’t the same risk of underselling and this year choosing the wrong agent could be costly in terms of time on market and price.” Mr Cattle says the major difference between properties that sell quickly and those that stagnate is “purely marketing”. “We have the best priced real estate for buyers compared to anywhere else in the country, practically when it comes to

value for money. Last year in southeast Queensland, we built the same amount of properties to the volume of people that moved here, this means we don’t suffer from an oversupply,” he says. “We still have a population growth going on and plenty of projects and infrastructure happening to keep employment strong. For these reasons we won’t go into a buyer’s market, it’s a supply and demand thing and we have more demand than supply. “Regardless of markets, it’s always important to reach every potential buyer that might buy your home. The only way to reach as many buyers as possible is to look at all your marketing options; the difference in sales price can be massive. “Everyone understands online exposure but online portals do miss some buyers. Remarketing, database and print play a massive role in increasing your exposure, sometimes little things make a huge difference in price and not doing one thing can mean not selling or not reaching that premium buyer who buys with complete emotion.” Consistently tracking the ways in which potential buyers find Define’s listed homes, Mr Cattle says they have plenty of examples of the difference good exposure can make. “It’s not all REA or Domain, and as a matter of fact Domain isn’t even number two on our list,” he says. “We implement strategies that maximise our reach to potential buyers, as a business we invest heavily in this, to not use all platforms available when selling is like not caring about the outcome.”

“…it’s always important to reach every potential buyer that might buy your home”

FINAL WORD >>

“Be open to auctions. Properties are selling faster in auction and giving you the opportunity to get a premium price in competition. The statistics speak for themselves.” Andrew Garland

“Unless you have a time machine, don’t delay in buying property. This is the Sunshine Coast, demand continues to remain high and as far as price – it’s not going backwards.” Ross Cattle

Different locations, styles of home, ways to buy and wellbeing options are just the beginning for new residents at the 71 Lendlease retirement villages throughout Australia. social events, a community that inspires a sense of connection or linking you with our support partners who can help with your healthcare, we’ve got your back. Our approach is personal, flexible and reliable, ensuring you have everything you need to live your best life.

Retirement living on your terms When you’re considering retirement living, a clear understanding of contracts, costs and value is essential.

At Lendlease, we’re committed to guiding you with respect, transparency and care along the way. If you’re thinking of moving into a retirement village, you need to feel confident you’re making the right choice. To help, we’ve created the Guide to Retirement Living so you have the information you need to decide if retirement village living is right for you.

Putting heart and soul into community Lendlease recently conducted a search to discover the ‘Good Sports’ living within its retirement villages. Hundreds of nominations were collected which in turn has created a collection of stories of selflessness, kindness, camaraderie and community. Resident Phyllis Wigmore was recognised for being a ‘good sport’ who brings people together. She won the 2018 Good Sports “Camaraderie” Award. Affectionately known as the “heart and soul” of her village, she

organises monthly resident dinners and movie nights, and is especially famous for her delicious sponge cakes. A tireless worker and dedicated church member, Phyllis goes out of her way to care for others, checking in with residents and cooking meals for those in need. A great tennis player, handy seamstress and recipient of an OBE from the Queen, Phyllis is more than a ‘good sport’ - she’s a great sport!

S

unshine Coast local Ben Kelly can’t believe his luck. Last week he became the winner of First National Real Estate’s recent Summer of Cash promotion, taking home $10,000 in prize money. First National Real Estate offices across the Sunshine Coast teamed up together to create the competition, which required entrants to list their property for rent or sale during the competition period. Mr Kelly couldn’t be happier with the win.

Horton Apartments is the perfect location to enjoy a great lifestyle. Overlooking the new CBD on one side and Sunshine Plaza on the other, you can enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment all on your door step. It is only a short walk to spend a day on the beach or the river at Cotton Tree.

“This win couldn’t have come at a better time for me,’’ he says. ““I’ve just started a Sunshine Coast business, Benkel, specialising in high-quality mini excavators and earth movers. The money will come in really handy for building my business.” Mr Kelly purchased a property through Shane Purssell and First National in 2009. He was so impressed with the service he received that when it came time for him to sell, he headed back to First National.

Features: modern kitchen with stone bench tops and plenty of cupboards, two bedrooms, master bedroom with ensuite, air conditioning, screened doors, nice courtyard with garden area, secure underground parking, resort complex with Lagoon pool, gym and bbq areas. Well, last Monday I snow boarded with minus 15°C temperatures and then boarded a plane only to arrive in Brisbane to 37°C. Thank god I packed a jacket. I was only home for five minutes before I went to the beach for a swim. Followed by a real coffee! I’m now back into the swing of things. Okay, the winds look light this weekend so enjoy what you can. I am going to try some motorised foiling, with no expectations. Friends tell me its feels freaky. Stay tuned! Have a great weekend peeps.
