olitical preference aside, I love a good election. My affair with poll night began about 12 years ago. It involved a bottle of red, a toasty crackling fire, Italian food and hours of rolling television coverage. It was bliss. That was the year of Kevin07. My husband and I had spent the day exploring the beautiful Granite Belt region, wine tasting and cheese sampling. Eager to watch the coverage, I’d hurried him along back to our country cabin. Bless him and his acceptance of my journalistic curiosity. My love for election night has become an ongoing joke among our family and friends. And, despite the changing landscape and often disappointing state of Australian politics, this Saturday night will be no different. Except for the fact that I have inadvertently passed on my election eagerness to my five-year-old son. He has requested marshmallows and popcorn, and while we are by no means a political family, we will be snuggling up to watch history unfold. For those who want to know a little more about the 2019 election, we provide a general wrap-up on page 12 of this edition. From politics to profile, this week we chat with not one, but two famous acts – Delta Goodrem and Craig Reid of The Proclaimers. Those stories are on pages 26 and 27. I am in the IT department at USC as a casual in Specialist Technologies. I also work as a project officer developing a suite of learning materials that aims to build and support career aspirations for low-SES schools in the area in Years 7 to 10. Your family includes? My partner Dave, Liam (aged seven) and Hamish (aged three). Favourite book? The Hobbit. My favourite series is Skulduggery Pleasant. When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Do video games count? I play Pokémon Go and I have a PS4. I played netball when I was like 16 – I think that’s the last time I played anything. Best advice you’ve been given? What achievement are you most proud of? Far out this is hard! Most recently is finishing my degree. My children of course. If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? I would say calm down, don’t take everything so personally, listen and acknowledge changes. he gloves came off, at least partially, for the final leaders’ debate of the federal election with Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten having several testy exchanges. The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader fronted the National Press Club last Wednesday for their third match-up of the campaign, but there was no clear winner. They confronted each other directly over issues including the details of Labor’s plan to tackle the cost of cancer treatment, negative gearing and the make-up of their ministries. “If you win you’ll have more people to promote because so many of your current ministry is leaving,” Mr Shorten said on the last point. “No need to get nasty,” the Prime Minister shot back. The coalition won’t be respecting Labor’s c mandate to wind back franking credit refunds tto people who pay no tax. “It’s a heinous tax on Australians who have wor worked hard all of their lives,” Mr Morrison said. And M Mr Shorten indicated Labor wouldn’t heed any coalition mandate on dealing w with climate change, saying, “I think their the minimalist approach to climate change m means the argument goes on.” However, both leaders committed to Howe maintaining budget surpluses even against maintain the econo economic headwinds forecast to blow Australia’s Australia’ way. National Press Club president and ABC Natio presenter Sabra Lane, who was the debate
moderator, pulled up Mr Morrison when he said the budget was in surplus already, pointing out it wasn’t for the current financial year and the truth of the forecast for 2019/20 wouldn’t be revealed until September 2020. “I said we brought the budget back to surplus next year,” he replied. The leaders also agreed with a simple “yes” each to have an independent debate commission set up before the next election to end the back-and-forth over when and where debates will be held and in what format. The leaders were allowed to ask two questions of each other – and all four were about Labor’s policies. Mr Shorten asked whether the coalition would follow his lead on further subsidising cancer care and child-care fees. “I think Australians have got to the point where they’ve grown tired of politicians who come and say ‘give me all your money and I’ll solve all your problems’,” the Prime Minister replied to the latter. He used his questions to ask whether Labor planned to increase tax on superannuation and for a guarantee that proposed limits on negative gearing wouldn’t push rents up or house prices down. Mr Shorten replied that the Grattan Institute and New South Wales Treasury had said the negative gearing policy wasn’t likely to impact house prices. “So there’s no guarantee?” Mr Morrison

DEBATE: THE BIG ISSUES CANCER • Asked whether the coalition would match Labor’s plans to cover more cancer services on Medicare, the Prime Minister stressed that in the public system, all treatment is government funded. • Mr Shorten suggested the Prime Minister was out of touch with the out-of-pocket costs people with cancer were facing in the public system.
TAX • Labor’s planned tax reforms were repeatedly spoken about, particularly its proposal to scrap cash rebates for some shareholders at tax time. • Mr Shorten said the franking credit refunds had been a gift which has become unsustainable. • Mr Morrison provided a detailed explanation of the refunds, in an effort to highlight that they were aimed at preventing people from being taxed twice.
ECONOMIC MANAGEMENT • Mr Shorten said a Labor government would not need to create a bigger deficit if there was a sharp downturn in the global economy, because of the extra tax revenue it would be raking in through reforms. He also committed to producing surpluses. • The Prime Minister said his government would keep the budget in surplus, but was reminded it would not be known whether it delivered a surplus in 2019/20 as forecast until later next year.
CLIMATE CHANGE • The issue of climate change again centred around what effect Labor’s policies would have on the economy. Mr Shorten again tried to spin the costs to businesses as an investment in the nation’s future and highlighted that carbon pollution had been growing under the coalition. • Mr Morrison said his opponent was taking for granted that there was already action being taken on climate change and increased investment in renewable energy.
THE COSTINGS Last Friday, the Labor party delivered its much-anticipated costings. Labor has pledged bigger budget surpluses as far as the eye can see while promising to look at further personal income tax cuts in the future when the nation’s finances allow. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison was quick to remind voters of previous budget promises by the federal opposition. “There’s always something very fishy when it comes to Labor’s claims about how to manage money and I think that’s what we’re seeing here again today,” Mr Morrison told reporters in central Queensland. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen and Labor’s finance spokesman Jim Chalmers released the party’s policy costings, eight days from polling day on May 18. “Because of our policies, the Shorten Labor government will deliver a bigger budget surplus each and every year. Next year and beyond,” Mr Bowen told reporters in Canberra. The costings, which have been scrutinised by the independent Parliamentary Budget Office and a panel of accounting experts, show a forecast surplus of $7.4 billion in 2019/20, growing to a projected surplus of $21.8 billion in 2022/23. This compares with Treasury and Finance’s respective predictions of $7.1 billion and $9.2 billion in the Pre-election Economic and Fiscal Outlook, which was released in the first days of the election campaign. The 2022/23 surplus would also represent one per cent of gross domestic product, four years earlier than the government is forecasting. This improvement relies on Labor’s planned changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax, ending cash refunds from franking credits, and a range of clampdowns on tax concessions totalling $154 billion
HIT THE POLLS over the next 10 years. It also aims to raise $6.3 billion by re-introducing a budget repair levy on high-income earners. But the biggest saving comes from reversing the government’s tax cuts planned for 2022/23 and 2024/25, which amount to $285.8 billion over the next decade. Mr Bowen said when budget surpluses reach a sustainable level, only then can tax relief be delivered “prudently and sensibly”. Among Labor’s long list of spending promises, $15.9 billion will go to cheaper child care over the next 10 years, $59.3 billion for tax cuts for lowand middle-income earners, $16 billion for schools and $9.3 billion for pensioner dental care. Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said Labor hasn’t explained the potential effects of its costings. “What the Labor Party fails to do in these costings is explain the major and detrimental economic impact these higher taxes will have across the economy,” he told reporters. “We have been able to strengthen the Australian economy.” Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said Labor had produced a “con job” in failing to properly account for promises on foreign aid, hospitals, boosting the refugee intake and increasing science spending. However, the Labor policy document showed $1.18 billion more in foreign aid, $96 million extra for refugees, $1.3 billion for hospitals and a number of science-related measures. Meanwhile, the Morrison Government has set a target to reduce power bills by up to $185 a year. The target would see the spot price in the national electricity market reduce to less than $70/MWh by the end of 2021. Energy Minister Angus Taylor said the saving would amount to a 25 per cent power price reduction.
The Australian Electoral Commission states that all Australian citizens over the age of 18 who are enrolled to vote, elect people to represent them in the two houses of the Commonwealth Parliament – the Senate and the House of Representatives. Voters will receive two ballot papers – a green for the House of Representatives, and a white one to vote for a representative for the Senate. THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Write the number ‘1’ in the box next to the candidate who is your first choice, and the numbers ‘2’, ‘3’ and so on against all the other candidates until all the boxes have been numbered, in order of your preference. Ballot papers must be marked according to the rules for voting so that they do not create informal votes. THE SENATE On the white Senate ballot paper, you need to either number at least six boxes above the line for the parties or groups of your choice, or number at least 12 boxes below the line for individual candidates of your choice. EMMA ANGEL NAMED SUMMER SURF GIRL RUNNER-UP Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club’s Emma Angel (pictured) has been named the runner-up in Surf Life Saving Queensland’s (SLSQ) 2019 Summer Surf Girl Program. Ms Angel also received the Innovation Award for her Emma On Tour social media fundraising campaign. More than $290,380 was raised by Summer Surf Program ambassadors and the overall winner was Sophie Gerry from Mermaid Beach SLSC. The annual program, now in its 55th year, is open to members who undertake a range of activities to develop their leadership, lifesaving, community education, networking and fundraising skills over a period of up to 12 months.
AUTHOR VISIT FUELS IMAGINATIONS Creative minds were sparked at Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim this week as students were treated to workshops with hilarious and heart-warming Australian children’s author Danny Parker. Flinders Head of Primary School Trudi Edwards invited the Perth-based author to be writer-in-residence over three days to share his passion for writing, storytelling and creativity with Flinders’ students from Prep to Year 6. With the students on the edge of their seats, Mr Parker shared the author’s notes to every page of his book Tree, challenging the students to look deeper into the story.

VERGE PLANTING IS NOW PERMITTED Sunshine Coast’s green thumbs and kitchen gardeners will find it even easier to plant a garden on the nature strip or road verge following Sunshine Coast Council’s endorsement of a local law amendment to include new self-assessable criteria. Residents can now plant a hedge up to 1.5 metres high along the fence line and plant a garden bed up to 50 centimtres high on the verge, without having to submit an application or arrange public liability insurance. Small hedges, herbs, vegetables and ferns are just some of the plants included in the extensive approved species list, all of which are safe, sustainable and fit with the character of the Coast.
Two new faces have been endorsed by Sunshine Coast Council for appointment to the board of SunCentral Maroochydore. Alison Quinn and Paul McLean will fill the two board vacancies and will help to oversee the development and delivery of the 53-hectare Maroochydore City Centre – Australia’s only greenfield central business district development at this time. Ms Quinn has extensive senior executive and non-executive director experience in banking, finance and property development across the corporate and public sectors. Mr McLean has been involved in executive leadership roles in property management and commercial real estate since 1990.
KIDS IN ACTION KICKS OFF FOR 2019 More than 300 students from 26 different schools across the Sunshine Coast came together to get outdoors, meet new friends and have fun as part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Kids in Action program. reativity is a way of life for Cynthia Hawkins. From hair styling to makeup artistry, graphic design, photography, painting and fashion design, there is nothing this single mother-of-three can’t do. So when the Tasmanian resident turned her hand to creating wearable art for the state’s respected Paper on Skin competition last year, it is not surprising that magic unfolded. It took more than 300 hours of highly detailed work to combine a variety of papers and paper yarn for Ms Hawkins to pay homage to Empress Wu Zetian, the only female emperor in the history of China. Ms Hawkins took out the Public Vote Award for her entry, which was titled Empress at Forbidden City, and placed herself firmly in the spotlight of up-and-coming designers to watch. Ms Hawkins will be among the Australian artists who showcase more than 40 creations on the catwalk at the Australian Wearable Art Festival in Eumundi on May 24. The festival forms part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Fabric 2019 Slow Fashion Artful Living Program. Keeping her cards close to her chest to provide a surprise for design enthusiasts who attend, Ms Hawkins says the creation she is entering in the Coast competition is the polar opposite of the delicate work needed for her paper gown, with a number of heavy-duty tools used to bring the piece to life. “I look forward to seeing what is going to be on the runway at the Australian Wearable Art Festival and to meet like-minded people who have put in so much time and effort to create something that people will be fascinated by.” A promotion for her job as a disability support worker
meant Ms Hawkins was unable to enter the World of Wearable Art in New Zealand and Wearable Art Mandurah this year, so she has dedicated herself to making a splash on the Coast later this month. The Australian Wearable Art Festival will have four main categories as part of its gala parade competition – Avant Garde, Floriana, Trashion and Sustainable – as well as additional prizes for Haute-Couture, Headpiece, First Nation and Best Tertiary and Secondary Student pieces. Event curator Wendy Roe says guests are in for a spectacular showcase where fashion is taken to the extreme. “We have a 16-metre runway where haute couture will meet costumery, where waste will be turned into waistcoats and flower crowns become complete flower dresses,” Ms Roe says. Festival judge and fashion designer Cindy Vogels says the festival allows artists to extend their practice and provides a platform for a wider audience to be inspired by form, structure, texture and colour, often using an eclectic mix of unusual materials. “Wearable art is a unique form and really embraces the idea that we can live and wear art every day,” she says. Award-winning artist Jandamarra Cadd and special guest judge Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Institute of Design will join Ms Vogels on the judging panel and a total of $3600 cash will be awarded on the night.

HEIDI LATCHAM: MAFS, MIKE AND MOVING ON Now that Married at First Sight has ended, Sunshine Coast radio announcer Heidi Latcham opens up about what really happened between her and Mike Gunner – and whether the relationships on MAFS are all just an act. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

hen My Weekly Preview last spoke to Heidi Latcham in March, Married at First Sight was still airing and Australia was waiting to see whether she’d live happily ever after with Mike Gunner from the Gold Coast. As we know, Ms Latcham called it quits, retreating here to the Sunshine Coast, where she grew up, to lick her wounds. The antics

I realised our safety blanket was the experiment and we weren’t as compatible as we thought.” While Ms Latcham was the one to end the relationship, she grieved for what might have been. “I couldn’t eat and couldn’t sleep,” she
says. “I went through the experiment full blast. I wore my heart on my sleeve and put everything I had into it and was very honest. I wanted to see if I could really find something. After that I felt really distraught and didn’t know what was real and true.” Three relationship experts gave Ms Latcham and Mr Gunner advice on their relationship, which usually focused on what they believed Ms Latcham needed to change about herself to succeed with Mike. “I’m really good at listening to my intuition and my instincts, but sometimes with the experts, I was guided a different way to what I believe in. I’d think, okay, maybe I am being silly. But they don’t get to see 24/7 into the relationship. I felt like I really lost myself. “No matter how much advice you get, the only person you can rely on is yourself. You know truly whether something is right or wrong. The only thing I know is, I will never doubt myself ever again. That’s why I’m so grateful for the experiment, even though it was one of the hardest things ever.” Having experienced the show from the inside, Ms Latcham has a unique perspective on what makes it so popular.
“You get a fly-on-the-wall perspective of a relationship beginning, starting to blossom and growing. That in itself is like woah, we actually get to see that. It’s so fascinating.” A highly recognisable public figure, she is often the subject of rumours about who she’s dating. Ms Latcham confirms she’s single but ready to find love again, with someone kind, considerate and funny. She’s also relishing her job as a breakfast radio presenter with BarRat (pictured) on 91.9 Sea FM. “I am loving it,” she says. “I get up at 3.30 every morning and I feel so lucky to go to work and see BarRat. We have so much fun together, I love his sense of humour. It was really important to me to find a co-host with a similar sense of humour to me. We finish the show and we’re exhausted because we’ve put so much into it. Then I wake up and get to do it all again the next day. I think, oh my god, do I get to live like this every day? “Up until MAFS finished, I still felt like I had to live like I was on the show. I still felt married and was wearing the wedding ring. But when I took off my wedding ring, I got to breathe again. I’m not Mike and Heidi anymore. I’m just Heidi and it feels so good to be Heidi.”

HOW WILL MARKETS RESPOND TO A LABOR GOVERNMENT?
A
t the time of writing this article, opinion polls indicated the Coalition had recovered ground lost following the leadership challenge in August last year. That said, by the time you read this, those opinions might have changed. Preferences from the minor parties are expected to be crucial. On a two-party preferred basis, the Coalition is now trailing Labor by just two percentage points (49 to 51) and is just one point shy of evening up the race. Winning the election does not guarantee success in passing legislation and implementing their initiatives, however, unless the governing party can secure a
majority in both the Senate and House of Representatives. At this stage, it appears that capturing the majority in the Senate, in other words 39 seats, will be difficult. Therefore, if we assume that Labor wins the election and has a favourable Senate makeup, some views of sectors that may experience some advantage or disadvantage are as follows: Healthcare – The reversal of the indexation freeze on Medicare benefits and the Medicare Cancer plan is likely to favour diagnostic companies such as Sonic Healthcare, Integral Diagnostics and Healius. On the other hand, health insurers such as Medibank Private and NIB Holdings could face pricing pressure under Labor’s promise to cap increases in insurance premiums at two per cent per annum. Investment assets – Negative gearing reforms are a potential headwind for the banks and residential developers such as Mirvac, Lendlease and Stockland if house prices soften. The impact of reducing the Capital Gains Tax discount is more at the market level, rather than individual securities. On the franking credit changes, we fear an unintended consequence is that it causes investors to take on more risk in the hope of a higher return. Industrial relations – Restoring penalty rates will increase the cost of labour, putting pressure on margins. This will primarily

hen Delta Goodrem was a teenager, she dared to dream of living a life where she could make a difference in the world. Through acting and music, she has achieved all of this and more, continuing to inspire young creatives and support those who are going through cancer battles through her philanthropic efforts. Ms Goodrem is pumped to once again be on The Voice judging panel, this year alongside Guy Sebastian, Kelly Rowland and Boy George.
She hints there will be some familiar faces on this year’s show, with some singers returning for another crack at the title, raising the bar yet again on the level of talent attracted to the popular show. “While we are competing to secure the vocalists that we love to get them on our team, we all sit in our own lanes and there is so much energy, love and wisdom on the panel,” she tells My Weekly Preview. Ms Goodrem has managed to take two of her Voice team members all the way, winning

every day of my life, I am open at all times to feeling what is going on in this moment because you never know what you might dream up and create – it could be something magical – and I believe that anything is possible in any moment,” she says. “I love the arts in any form and working in different spaces gives me variety. “For me, writing an album is organic. It can’t happen unless you’ve got something to say. Every album I have released is different because it’s a reflection of what I am feeling about myself and the world, what I’m observing, listening to and watching. Sonically, no one album is the same because you feel this is a new chapter with each album and it comes down to knowing yourself.” Ms Goodrem fought a very public battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 18 and believes strongly in giving back. She is now the patron of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation and has a long-standing relationship with Starlight, Camp Quality and Make-A-Wish. “It’s crucial to remember that songs are healing and the fact that I am able to stand here as a pillar of hope and strength to somebody who is in the fight and remind them that they are alone is truly amazing,” she says.

After signing a record deal at the age of 15, Ms Goodrem’s 2003 debut album Innocent Eyes became one of the highest-selling debut albums in Australian history. She has since achieved multi-platinum-selling status, nine number one singles, four number one albums, 17 top 10 hits, nine ARIA Music Awards and three World Music Awards. Ms Goodrem says she is working on a new album and after taking on the role of Grizabella in the musical theatre production of Cats and playing her idol Olivia NewtonJohn in a television biopic, she is opening up her mind to a world of new possibilities. “I’m one of those people that is continually dreaming of another dream goal

Scottish twins still going strong
The Proclaimers have shown that there is plenty of life after a smash hit single. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
“W
hen I wake up, yeah I know I’m gonna be, I’m gonna be the man who wakes up next to you.” Anyone over the age of 35 will read these words and immediately hear the melody, such is the power of the song that shot The
Proclaimers to stardom when they released it in 1988. I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) is a sweet serenade to the woman who writer Craig Reid would eventually marry and it changed the lives of the identical Scottish twins. “It was written in 45 minutes,” says Mr Reid, speaking to My Weekly Preview from his
home in Edinburgh. “Charlie and I had made our first album and we were touring. It was just the two of us and a guitar and we were living in a flat in Edinburgh, waiting to be picked up by a car. I had a while to wait for the car to arrive. I sat down at the piano and started playing. I got the whole song, all the music and lyrics. It just seemed to flow into my lap; it seemed to be writing itself.” That moment propelled the brothers onto the international stage. At a time when image was everything, when big hair ruled the stage and big production numbers ruled the airwaves, two nerdy-looking Scotsmen with short red hair, thick glasses and plain jeans made us all do a double-take. “That song has been fantastic for us and we’re glad to have it, but I certainly would never try to write the same song twice,” says Mr Reid. “We’re grateful it happened but I’m not sure we’d want the instant success again. I’d be quite happy to never have that; it kind of distorts. I don’t like the instant celebrity madness that goes around with a big hit like that. It’s quite unsettling.” If you think The Proclaimers were a one-hit wonder, think again. While earnings from 500 Miles are five times the rest of their catalogue combined, they’ve had plenty to say since it was released. In fact, they’ve released 11 studio albums, the latest being Angry Cyclist, which they are now touring. When tickets were released for the July concert at Edinburgh Castle, they sold out in 10 minutes, breaking all records. A second show was promptly announced and sold out in a day. In his characteristically understated way, Mr Reid simply says they were “surprised” at how quickly the tickets sold. Of course, The Proclaimers, singing as they always have in their thick Scottish brogue, are a big deal in Scotland. But it’s also their advocacy for Scottish independence and their political conscience that have made them popular in their home country.
“Angry Cyclist is about comparing the way you see cyclists in big cities in amongst buses and trucks. It has messages of fear and panic and anger, comparing that with the way politics in many Western countries in recent years has become very polarised and bitter. “We’re using it as a metaphor. I think the degree of hatred in many countries between opposing factions is the worst I’ve seen it since the 1970s. “I’m referring to in the US, the people who support Trump and the people who don’t. In Britain, it’s Brexit and the rise of the far right, which has happened in all Western countries. It’s very worrying.” While the Reid brothers continue to do what they do best, which is writing and playing brilliant music that combines rock, pop, folk and post-punk, Mr Reid has some advice for those unsure of what, if anything, we can do in the face of political instability. “You have to try and respect the other side, even when you don’t agree with them. Keep the lines of communication open.” Angry Cyclist is charting exceptionally well and receiving rave reviews. The Reid brothers have proven they’ve still got the goods. Charlie has been quoted as saying his obituary will read: ‘One of the guys who sang 500 Miles’ and he’s okay with that. So, is there a magical formula to writing the kind of song that sinks into the world’s psyche and ends up on multiple soundtracks? “I don’t think there is,” says Craig, matter-of-factly. “If you write often enough, if you’ve got talent, you’re going to come up occasionally with something that’s really going to communicate. “We always set out to be ourselves. If I had any advice, it would be that: to be yourself.”

OWNING THE PAST
Sami Muirhead says in a world of untrustworthy politicians, institutions and media figures, we can always trust one person: Ita Buttrose.
Richard O’Leary says Bruce Pascoe’s book, Dark Emu, should be required reading for every Australian household.
I
ta Buttrose has always been someone I admire and once I met her in the flesh. It was a disaster. I literally could not form words as I was so starstruck. Ita looked at me and sternly said, “Oh for God’s sake, spit it out as we have not got all day!” I went on to have a wonderful conversation with my hero journalist and groundbreaking career woman who never seems to run out of puff and clearly does not suffer fools or tongue-tied fans! This week, Ita was addressing a large crowd and talking about her new role as the chair of the ABC. I sat looking at Ita as if she was the Queen herself. A look I do not have for many role models these days. I mean, sure I would have the same look for Hugh Jackman, Ray Martin and Rebecca Gibney, but my list starts to dwindle after that when it comes to trustworthy celebrities. I would of course trust Chris Hemsworth and his hammer to do some jobs around the house, but that is a fantasy I will not go into right now. Back to pure thoughts and Ita. The 77-year-old made a really valid point in noting we are in an era of not trusting anyone. But we do still trust the ABC and the media stalwart promised to protect this in her role as the boss. When you think about it, Ita is right. Our politicians do not seem overly trustworthy with a merry-go-round of prime ministers all serving their own egos and agendas. The Catholic church has never been less trusted after George Pell’s disgraceful actions
against children. And social media? Well, who is trusting those images of perfect mums who are living perfect lives with their perfect children and perfect parties with perfect guests and perfect balloon arrangements and perfect flower walls? I have more a feeling of unease than ever these days when I look at the stream of images on my Instagram feed. It is a niggle inside my belly and I have learnt if I am feeling not so great mentally, I will not spend much time on social media. Do we trust reality TV shows, or do we all suspect they are totally scripted or just full of a cast of hopefuls wanting to become famous and increase their Instagram followers? And the banks. Well. Not exactly the most ethical institutions. Christopher Skase seems squeaky clean in comparison to many of our banks. But Ita got a standing ovation when she spoke about protecting the reputation and role of the ABC. And I reckon we can all trust Ita. After all, let’s just bask in the glory of Cold Chisel’s anthem shall we: “Every night when I get home I settle down to prime time limbo When all the boys are gathered around shouting, Ita’s on TV And though the roaches are thick on the ground Somebody goes to close my window Keep the noise of the city down Get a dose of integrity.” God bless you Ita!

I
t wasn’t so long ago that art and history experts explained away the parklands depicted in paintings shortly after the white settlement of Australia as some sort of cultural blindness. The theory put forward was European artists didn’t know how to paint the Australian bush, so they replaced it with the rolling estates one may have found in the English countryside. The reality is the art critics were seduced by the mythmakers of Australian history who ignored evidence of Aboriginal settlements, farming through fire, the cultivation of crops and seed storage. The first European painters in Australia had merely reproduced what they saw – the parklands created by tens of thousands of years of cultivation of the countryside by the first occupants of the land. The denial of this conservation and control by our first peoples provided justification for massacres, misappropriation and misguided paternalism. This re-evaluation of our history is put forward powerfully by Bruce Pascoe in Dark Emu, a book I have unforgivably just read considering it was first published five years ago. He paints a picture of a well-developed Aboriginal economy; harvesting of grains, extensive dam networks, weirs and sluices on rivers for harvesting fish, and sustainable farming of kangaroos without the damage
to the land that cattle and sheep inflict by compacting the soil. This is what Pascoe says about our responsibility to own the past. “It seems improbable that a country can continue to hide from the actuality of its history in order to validate the fact that having said sorry, we refuse to say thanks, the next step on a moral nation’s agenda is to ensure that every Australian acknowledges the history and insist that, as we are all Australians, we should have the opportunity
“I believe it should be on every bookshelf in the country” to share education, health and employment of that country on equal terms. Many will say that equality is insufficient to account for the loss of the land, but in our current predicament it’s not a bad place to start.” I wish Dark Emu had been around when I was going through school to counter the indoctrination of Captain Cook discovering Australia and pastoralists occupying land that wasn’t being used – and I believe it should be on every bookshelf in the country. I’ll be buying plenty of copies in the coming months as it will be my standard go-to present for family and friends. It may not be much, but to paraphrase Pascoe, it’s probably not a bad place to start.

KIND WORDS Charmaine Wilson is heading back to the Coast to offer insight to those who have lost a loved one. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
A
s the seats begin to fill, Charmaine Wilson sits backstage in complete stillness. She focuses on one thing – raising her vibration in order to connect with spirit. She is about to walk out in front of hundreds of people all hoping for a chance to have a live reading from the renowned spirit medium. Despite discovering her gift in 1999 after her father died and beginning her work as a medium in 2002, Ms Wilson admits she is still “petrified” every time she sets foot on stage. Not because of stage fright, but because she never knows what is about to unfold. She will no doubt feel the same when she steps onto the stage at The Events Centre, Caloundra on May 20. “I know what to say at the beginning, where I explain my processes, and at the end where I give everybody a message of hope that they

can take home with them. But the middle depends on the spirits,” she explains. “Usually I am attracted to one part of the room, and then one particular person in the room, like a big magnet. I literally can’t look anywhere but at that person and then all of the spirits connected to that person will come around them. “I allow those spirits to give me whatever it is that will resonate with the person in front of me and usually that is to establish how that person passed away. I will actually be able to feel that and it can be quite specific depending on the spirit. “Then they show me things about them, who they were, how they liked to dress, all types of funny and crazy things. You never know what ridiculous things you are going to hear.” Ms Wilson begins preparing for each show at least 24 hours before in order to
ensure she is in the best possible place to provide clear and precise readings to those she is attracted to on the night. Ms Wilson has a depth of empathy and compassion born from tragedy and heartache that allows her to emotionally connect and resonate with each of the people she reads for. She lost her brother and four-year-old daughter to tragic accidents and her mother passed in late 2006. She has also lived through the trauma of suicide of a very dear friend and recently lost her stepfather. Her achievements have been recognised by the Australian Psychics Association and she was awarded the 2005 Australian Psychic of the Year and 2009 Queensland Psychic of the Year for her efforts. In 2008 she was the winner of The One, a nationwide search for Australia’s most gifted psychic. The Sunshine Coast holds a special place in Ms Wilson’s heart. In the time before remote studios, she drove from her Ipswich home to the Hot91 studio in Maroochydore every two weeks throughout 2005 and 2006 to do phone readings for callers during the breakfast show. Now living in Stanthorpe, Ms Wilson has decided to move on from the tour-bus lifestyle she lived for a time with her husband Patrick. She now focuses on her Living With Spirit workshops and live shows, giving herself enough space to interact one-on-one with people dealing with grief and loss on social media and continue to write her popular books. “I encourage people to come to a show with an open mind and an open heart. “Spirit exists and there is a possibility to communicate after they transition, but you need to remember the life of the loved one, not their death. “Once you embody what they gave to you while they were alive, the signs they are trying to give you will become clearer.” Sunshine Coast residents will get an opportunity to see Ms Wilson in action at The Events Centre, Caloundra on May 20. Depending on how you answer those questions, they will book you in for a Regional Assessment Service (RAS) assessment or an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment. In either case, an assessor comes to your home, asks you about your routines and decides if you qualify for their program. These assessments lead to two different programs; the Commonwealth Home Support Program and the Home Care Packages.
FINDING YOUR WAY IN THE HOME CARE MAZE Let’s face it, home care can look like one big confusing jumble of jargon and acronyms. Home Care Assistance, Sunshine Coast to Wide Bay director Kendall Morton breaks down some of the most common questions asked by clients so you can navigate your way to the services you and your family need.
How do I know where to start when I want some help? The starting point is always My Aged Care. This is the federal government agency. They will ask you some questions and book you in for an assessment. The number is 1800 220
What does the Commonwealth Home Support Program do? They fund providers to support people with domestic help, shopping and transport. Mostly this happens once a fortnight for a few hours. The providers have to spread this funding among many local people. The funding is not tied to you and your name. You may be asked to pay a contribution towards the costs.
Is Commonwealth Home Support only for short-term situations? No. It does offer short-term help. For instance, you may have had a fall and need some help with cleaning for a few months. But it also offers support over the long-term. If your needs change and you need more
help, the next step is to contact My Aged Care for a more comprehensive assessment.
Definitely not. You cannot use it to pay for food, rent or bills. Your provider can show you the full list of restrictions, or you can visit the My Aged Care website. There is a fair amount of flexibility as long as we can relate it back to your care needs. For instance, you can have therapies, buy equipment, pay for transport for a carer to take you to the gym and support you there. You can use it for a carer to accompany you to an event such as the football. The key is to find a provider who takes the time to listen and understand how your home care package can best meet the needs of you and your family.
What are ACAT assessments? These are the assessments you must have to get into the queue for a Home Care Package. It stands for Aged Care Assessment Team. Again, you need to book it in with My Aged Care. The number is 1800 220 422. Home Care Packages offer more support than the Commonwealth Home Support Program. Support varies from Level 1 to Level 4. At Level 4, a person can get assistance every day according to their needs and care plan.
What’s the biggest misunderstanding about home care right now?
People worry that getting help at home will take away their independence. How can you manage this?
Many people don’t realise that in order to get a Home Care Package you must have an ACAT assessment. Another point of confusion is once you get an ‘approval’ letter for home care, that does not mean you have a package. It means you are now in a national queue and waiting on a package. It is not uncommon to wait for 12 months and you definitely would be waiting for over 12 months for a higher level package. However you may get assigned a lower level one in the meantime.
That’s a common misunderstanding. In fact, home care packages can be used to promote independence. It’s not about people coming in and taking away your independence. It is more about supporting your activities so that you can stay involved and independent for longer. Mr Monahan says being such a significant site, it is important to Mosaic to help preserve some of the rich history as well as utilise sustainable practices and recycle where possible. “The iconic, heritage-listed house that
existed here for more than 100 years has been lovingly re-homed on a large two-acre block in Bli Bli and in addition to recycling the tree mulch, we will also be adding over 700m² of subtropical landscaping,” Mr Monahan says. Residents were able to collect mulch in private vehicles, utes, trailers or in bags with Mosaic and Fraser Earthworks staff and equipment on hand to assist with loading.
