FROM THE EDITOR
M
ovember isn’t all about growing a wicked mo these days. You can choose to run or walk 60 kilometres over the month – that’s 60 kilometres to represent the 60 men we lose to suicide each hour across the world. Or you can ‘host a mo-ment’ by inviting some mates over for a barbie to raise money for this worthy cause. For our Movember cover story I chatted with Wallaby star Anthony Fainga’a, who made the difficult decision to retire from the game this year. After suffering 500 knocks to the head, he decided remembering his kids was more important to him than the sport and has a message for all the men out there who buy into the ‘harden up’ mentality. There’s nothing wrong with a little self-care, guys! Also this week, I spoke with popular romance and contemporary women’s fiction author Rachael Johns, who is speaking on the Coast for the first time. I was intrigued to discover that after 24 books, she still suffers from crippling self-doubt. Grab your tickets to the event at Buderim Tavern with author Mary-Lou Stephens – it’s sure to be a fun event. Our travel section features the incredible salt flats of Bolivia – the Salar de Uyuni. Having visited this dreamscape 20 years ago, I can say it’s an otherworldly place that should be on everyone’s bucket list. Life seems to speed up at this time of year, so don’t forget to take some time out each day to breathe and relax. Take care.

The head of Australia’s space agency believes tripling the size of the space industry over the next 10 years is achievable based on growth in some countries. The Federal Government has set a target for the industry of growing from $4 billion to $12 billion and the creation of an additional 20,000 jobs by 2030. “That’s our goal; it is an ambitious goal,” Australian Space Agency head Megan Clark told a Senate inquiry on Thursday. Dr Clark said there had already been some very positive signs with small- and medium-sized enterprises in the industry growing by some 136 per cent in the past few years and international companies based in Australia growing by 55 per cent. “We are projecting greater than global GDP growth and greater than Australian GDP growth for the sector,” Dr Clark said. “That is not unreasonable when we set it and certainly with what we are already seeing.” – AAP

WORD OF THE WEEK Winklepicker Style of shoe or boot introduced in the 1950s with a sharp and long pointed toe.
A Facebook post from September 21 by an Australian user claimed the term ‘shot’ (as in whisky) hails from the Wild West, when a .45 cartridge cost the same as a glass of whisky. If someone was low on cash, they could give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink – a shot of whisky. But AAP FactCheck found this statement to be false – the word actually has Germanic and Old English origins.

COVER STORY
Make time for our men
Every year the Movember movement gains momentum, shining a light on the physical and mental challenges faced by men around the world. But our blokes are still suffering. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
D
uring the 2011 Rugby World Cup in Wellington, Wallaby Anthony Fainga’a was taken from the field after losing consciousness for more than a minute. It would not be the worst, or the last head knock he suffered. After enduring more than 500 knocks to the head during his rugby career, Fainga’a was left with severe symptoms that he couldn’t shake – blurred vision, a sore neck, fatigue. He was worried it was a brain tumour, but it turned out he was suffering from post-concussion syndrome, a mild form of traumatic brain injury. However, it wasn’t until 2019 that he made the decision to put his health first, stepping away from the game not so much for himself, but for his wife and two children. “At the end of the day, I was terrified I wouldn’t be able to remember my girls,” he says. “I didn’t want their childhood taken away from me. “After playing in Japan for three seasons, I had opportunities to continue playing rugby but ultimately my girls and my family came first. Looking back now, I know I made the right call. If I was 25 and didn’t have a wife and two kids, I’d be playing. I’d just keep
10 My Weekly Preview | November 1, 2019

pushing along, but with two little kids I want to make sure I’m right for them. “Now I’ve stepped away from the game, I know it’s not right to just keep pushing hard to play when you have head injuries. You do need to take the time to get your head right.” Despite his decision to retire, Mr Fainga’a says he still thinks rugby is a great game and is grateful for the opportunities it gave him. It was a huge part of life for the Fainga’a family, which made Anthony’s decision to leave his career so difficult. His father, Saia Fainga’a snr, lived and breathed the sport, and instilled that same passion in all of his boys – including Anthony and his twin brother Saia jnr. In 2017, Saia snr died unexpectedly after being bitten by a mosquito in Tonga and developing septicaemia. “My father passed away four days after my daughter was born,” Mr Fainga’a says. “She was born, which was the best thing in my life and on the flip side of that, he passed away. I thought everything was fantastic and it went from high to low. “Everything happens for a reason and I was very lucky, I surround myself with good people. I was able to get through that tough
time. I moved back to Japan for two years – living away from everyone in a foreign country, it’s been tough, then to move back and try to transition from being a rugby player to working, it has been really difficult. “My father was a big advocate of pushing through injuries in order to keep your spot on the team, no matter what. I wanted to make him proud, and it was a factor in why I had a ‘harden up’ mentality in regard to my health for so long.” Mr Fainga’a has now let go of that ‘harden up’ mentality that so many men experience. He has moved back to Brisbane with his family and is working in the bond and property insurance industry.
“I don’t miss [rugby] as much as I thought I would. I miss the camaraderie, I miss the wins and the losses, I miss getting into the change rooms and having a chat with the guys after we’ve worked really hard. But I will definitely never play rugby again. I won’t even play touch. I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved and my future now will be longer than if I’d stayed playing rugby.” Although he says it has been a big adjustment, Mr Fainga’a is focused on looking after himself in his retirement and recently became a Movember ambassador. “After retiring they reached out and I thought it was such a worthy cause, especially with what I’ve been through in the last few years,” he says. “If there’s any chance I could help anyone, I’d like to help. “Until they can start replacing heads like they can knees and shoulders, I won’t be playing. My brother said, ‘why are you retiring?’ They made a bit of a joke about it. Still now, if you have a day off, people don’t understand. If you’re sick or vomiting they can see that, but we don’t know what’s going on inside people’s heads. I always feel the pressure of, do they believe me? Why don’t they think it’s all right? “My wife took four weeks off work in the very early stages when I got a really big head knock to help me. People at her work thought, he’s only got a concussion, he’ll be right. It’s only rugby. They thought, he’s really

COVER STORY taking the piss, why would you take four weeks off work? This was four years ago. Four years on, it still hasn’t changed. My wife has been so supportive and I’ve been very lucky to transition from rugby into corporate life. “The biggest thing for me is to be able to have a really good, close family and having those people I meet up with once a week and have a chat and a debrief with about anything that’s going on. Those are the things you can’t buy. If you surround yourself with good people, they set you on a really good path. “It’s okay to speak up, it’s okay to say it’s not all right. It’s okay to be you.” If you are experiencing difficulties, call Lifeline on 131 114 or MensLine Australia on 1300 789 978. For more information visit movember.com/findhelp.
6 KEY POINTS Make man time: Stay connected and spend time with mates, because social connections are a protective factor against depression, anxiety and even suicide. Try to check in regularly.
Move more: Add more activity to your day. Take a walking meeting, take the stairs, cycle to work instead of driving, get off the train a stop or two earlier. Know your numbers: When you turn 50, talk to your doctor about the pros and cons of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) testing. If you are of African or Caribbean descent or have a family history, do it at 45. Know thy nuts: Know what feels normal for you, and if something changes, starts hurting or doesn’t seem right, go to the doctor. You should be checking your testicles every month or so. Talk: It’s okay to not be okay. Take action by opening up and don’t put off an important conversation. Talking saves lives.

GRAB LIFE BY THE BALLS Grab Life by the Balls is a proactive men’s mental health movement that began here on the Sunshine Coast and has now spread across the country. Its founder, Sam Parker, realised there was a need for a way for men to connect with each other in an unstructured and relaxed way. In November 2016, he started a Bros, Burgers and Brews night in Mooloolaba, which
MOVEMBER CALLS ON THE SUNSHINE COAST TO GET BEHIND LOCAL MEN DOING IT TOUGH The latest figures show that men living in regional Queensland have much higher mortality rates for both prostate cancer and suicide than men living in the greater Brisbane region. For rural men in Queensland, the mortality rate for prostate cancer is approximately five per cent higher and the suicide rate among rural men in Queensland is approximately 35 per cent higher than men living in Greater Brisbane (ABS). Rachel Carr, Movember Australia country director says: “Sadly, the dire state of men’s health disproportionately affects those in country Australia. These men are fathers, brothers, partners and sons, and they are
morphed into Grab Life by the Balls. “Essentially it’s mateship,” he says. “Guys just want to be themselves. They’re busy as most of them want to provide and protect their family and they’re working long hours. They key thing for men is to find time for themselves. This is an excuse to have bacon and eggs or a coffee and that mateship and rapport creates positive and proactive change around our mental health. “It started off with me sending text messages around to my mates,” he says. “Twelve months ago we were on WIN News and things have taken off. Now we’re doing things in Noosa, Mooloolaba, Maroochydore and Caloundra – an array of things from coffee catch-ups to burger nights.” Grab Life by the Balls has grown to encompass Toowoomba, Sydney, Newcastle, Port Stephens, Townsville, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide. Now, a movement that began with a Sunshine Coast guy texting his mates, looks like it might go international, with interest coming from as far as Canada. The team is working towards breaking a
record for the world’s biggest barbecue for Father’s Day next year and hopes to go international by 2021. “It’s so Aussie, it’s mateship, guys just hanging out,” he says. “Research shows having three really close mates is a predictor of wellbeing. There’s a lot of social isolation and loneliness and just having mateship and connection is such a simple thing. “It’s a good bunch of blokes; they’re all very welcoming. If you come to our Friday morning barbecues, guys are all over you coming to say g’day and make you feel comfortable. We’ve had a few profound moments, some guys that said they were in a really tough spot when they first came along. It has really helped them.” Men from their twenties to their seventies and over and from all walks of life attend Grab Life by the Balls events. “It’s not structured or rigid, we don’t need to achieve anything. Just by coming together, the magic happens.”
facing a health crisis which isn’t being talked about. “Even one death from suicide, prostate cancer or testicular cancer is too many. This Movember, we’re encouraging men to take action for their health.” In Australia, this year, 3300 men will die of prostate cancer, while more than 200,000 are living with the disease. Six men a day take their own lives and three out of four suicides are by men. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men. Last year, more than 1000 Mo Bros and Sistas across Sunshine Coast raised more than $219,000 to help stop men dying too young. “As a grassroots organisation, Movember started from humble beginnings as a conversation between two blokes in a pub,” Ms Carr says.
“Today, we are delivering breakthrough research and support programs that enable men to live happier, healthier and longer lives year-round – and that is all thanks to the remarkable fundraising efforts of communities like Sunshine Coast.” Mo Bros taking part in Movember should sign up at Movember.com or download the Movember app and start with a clean-shaven face on Friday, November 1. After that, it’s as simple as letting their moustache grow for the rest of the month. You don’t have to grow to save a bro – anyone can get their mates together and host an event this Movember. It’s as easy as getting people together for backyard cricket, a group shave-off of facial hair, a barbecue dinner or a movie night.

The development application for Sunshine Coast Council’s new City Hall building has been approved, providing a further catalyst for development in the Maroochydore City Centre. The City Hall building will be built on the corner of First Avenue and South Sea Islander Way and will be one of the first buildings in the city centre. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the preferred construction partner of the 10-storey building, which will include retail and community spaces, is expected to be known by December 2019. Construction is expected to start in mid-2020, and City Hall will be occupied in the second half of 2022.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP SENIORS One of the Sunshine Coast’s most important and successful programs for seniors is searching for more volunteers. The Community Visitors Scheme is a free program designed to fight social isolation and loneliness by matching local seniors with a ComLink volunteer who can meet for a cup of tea, go on an outing, have a chat or explore a common interest. ComLink CEO Feda Adra says the program has already helped residents build new friendships, provide company and conversation and improve physical and mental health. To find out more about becoming a volunteer, visit comlink.org.au or call 1300 761 011.

BEER BREWERS UNITE FOR SMART PUPS A team of passionate Sunshine Coast brewers has presented a cheque for more than $10,000 to local charity Smart Pups Assistance Dogs. The money has been raised from sales of a collaborative brew, the Hinterland Craft Beer Festival Coffee Lager, made when brewers came together for the Hinterland Craft Beer Festival earlier this year. The Festival was held at Imperial Hotel Eumundi in July and saw brewers from Eumundi Brewery, Brewer Craig Dunsdon from Sunshine Brewery with Smart Pup Nelson Moffat Beach Brewing, Sunshine Brewery, Sunshine Coast Brewery, Heads of Noosa Brewing, Your Mates Brewing Co, Brouhaha Brewery and the Sunshine Coast Homebrewers Association come together to celebrate all things beer, and to create a special collab brew – brewed at the Eumundi Brewery. Head Brewer at Eumundi Brewery, Chris Sheehan, says the lager was kegged and delivered to the respective breweries and sold in Karma Kegs, with 100 per cent of the money raised going to Smart Pups Assistance Dogs, a Sunshine Coast charity dedicated to providing assistance dogs to children with special needs.

The Sunshine Coast Stadium will host the NRLW State of Origin clash in 2020. It will be the first time Queensland has hosted the match under the official Holden State of Origin banner. It was known as the Women’s Interstate Challenge until last year, when the name was changed. NRL head of elite football Graham Annesley says the time is right for the fixture to head to Queensland. “The Sunshine Coast is a growing area with the perfect stadium for Women’s State of Origin, which is why we chose the region,” he says. Sunshine Coast Stadium will also host two NRL games in 2020, with both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks to host a match each.
In a Queensland first, Sunshine Coast women will soon have access to state-of-the-art Lighting and Sensory Distraction Suites for their regular and follow-up breast screens. The innovative approach is aimed at making the experience more comfortable. It is hoped the therapeutic suites at the Sunshine Coast BreastScreen Clinic at Nambour Hospital will lift the region’s breast screening rates in women aged 50 to 75 from 56 per cent to meet the national accreditation standard of 70 per cent. Buderim Foundation has partnered with Wishlist to help make this important project become a reality, by donating $4000. The remainder of the $21,000 needed will be funded by Wishlist with proceeds from the foundation’s annual Melbourne Cup Event.
COAST LOCALS ARE SMART COOKIES NEW MERCEDES A NICE WIN Bernadette Farnell has been named as the winner of the Bloomhill Cancer Care’s major charity raffle and is now the proud owner of a Mercedes A-180 Hatch. Second prize, a $1000 fuel voucher from Aussie World Garage, was won by James Ussher, who is a Bloomhill client. The raffle raised $100,000 for the charity, which will go towards funding the services and therapies at the Bloomhill Cancer Care wellness centre in Buderim.
The Sunshine Coast has again been named in the top 21 smartest communities in the world for 2020. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) announced its annual Smart21 Awards at its Global Cities Digital Revolution Conference in Rochester, USA last week. This is the sixth time the Sunshine Coast has been recognised by the ICF in its Smart21 Awards as a global leader. The Sunshine Coast now has the opportunity to enter the running to again be recognised as one of the Top7 intelligent communities in the world, after being the only location in the southern hemisphere to achieve this recognition earlier this year. myweeklypreview.com.au

Tales from a true local Solicitor Alan Parry reflects on his life’s work, his family’s legacy and early surfing culture on the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.
lan Parry has a great story to tell, and its origins stretch back almost 140 years. Today, the Parry name is synonymous with success, largely due to Mr Parry’s work with the Sunshine Coastbased firm Griffiths Parry Lawyers & Notary. This month Mr Parry is celebrating 40 years in private practice. Not bad for a man who began his working life without clear direction. “I didn’t know what the hell I wanted to do,” Mr Parry recalls. “I had good marks, but I had no idea I’d end up in the legal profession. When I left school I got a job in the Commonwealth Bank. I didn’t like that, so I applied for a job in the public service. They gave me the justice department and put me in the Supreme Court registry where I worked for 10 years. “There was no work in Caloundra in the 1960s, through the ’70s. A tradesman, that’s all you could be. It certainly was an interesting way to learn the law, working with all the judges and assistant sheriff in the Supreme Court on the Whiskey Au Go Go trials. I developed a fairly intricate knowledge. “While there, I became interested in the
law. I applied to study the Solicitors Board Examination and I did that from ’72 to ’76. I got all my passes. I was 28 when I was admitted. I joined the firm in 1981 and was made partner in 1982.” “I always knew I was coming back to the Sunshine Coast. This is where my heart is.” It is where Mr Parry and his wife Faye Rolph became important members of the community. Ms Rolph is credited with the establishment of one of the country’s most prestigious modelling agencies, and the pair’s three children – Trent, Ryan and Monique – have all gone on to build their own successful careers. Mr Parry himself has been involved in the establishment of many iconic Sunshine Coast businesses. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of the knowledge that I looked after three generations of families. The Kurz family for example, I looked after them when they established BMW. Gregson & Weight has been three generations. It gives me a lot of joy that those families stuck with me all those years.” The Parrys are a pioneering family, that’s for sure. And it is a trait that has survived generations of bloodlines, and decades of hard work. “I was born in Nambour hospital so I’m a true local,’’ Mr Parry says with a chuckle. “I’m fourth generation of Parry.” The family’s love affair with the region

LOCAL NEWS dates back to the 1880s, when Welshman Miciaiah Parry packed up his wife and three children, and boarded migrant boat the SS Jumna, which was bound for Australia. Among those children was Mr Parry’s grandfather – who was two at the time. Miciaiah’s relative, Price Jones, who lived in Buderim (both Jones Road and Price Lane are named in his honour) had sent word that this coast-side location was a great spot, and tempted by good fortune, the family made the decision to start afresh. Upon landing in Brisbane, the Parrys travelled by horseback and buggy to the Sunshine Coast, where they settled on a plot of land, close to where the Kunda Park Pony Club sits now. Miciaiah worked in “what was the only business in Maroochydore at the time”, the Pettigrew’s Sawmill, which sat on the banks of the Maroochy River. He later acquired a cane farm at Nambour, where he worked until his death in November 1917. The Nambour & District Chronicle obituary notice dated November 9, 1917, read: “Mr Miciaiah Parry for many years a much respected resident of Nambour passed away on Monday last. Though of doubtful health for some months, he kept at work on his farm across Petrie Creek until a few days ago… He leaves a widow, four sons and one daughter and a big circle of friends to miss his unassuming personality.” What Miciaiah left was a legacy of hard work and determination – a trait he passed on to his children. “My grandfather lived in Eumundi when he left home and owned a blacksmith shop there,” Mr Parry says. “He worked in the timber industry as well, and retired to Caloundra when my dad was 10. It was just before the Second World War. My father stayed in Caloundra. My mother was
An old newspaper clipping shows Faye Rolph (far left), Ginny Vogler (second from left) and Alan Parry (far right) admiring the boards that Ma and Pa Bendall took with them to Hawaii to compete in the Makaha contest. born in the Maleny Hospital. We are a pioneering family, and I’m proud of that.” Mr Parry provides a colourful description of growing up in the “small fishing village” of Caloundra, where his father made a living as a professional fisherman. Long before the developments along Bulcock Beach’s esplanade stood tall, the shore was awash with fishing trawlers. While his dad worked hard to support the family, Mr Parry attended the local schools, and was among the first year 12 class to graduate from Caloundra High.
It was during his high school years that he met Ms Rolph. “We were cruising around in the Kombi van with the boards on top and saw these girls, so we stopped and had a chat,” he says with good humour. It was during this time that Mr Parry also formed a strong bond with Sunshine Coast surfing legends Ma and Pa Bendall. Credited as the couple who positively boosted the reputation of surfers, Marjorie and Charles Bendall were responsible for establishing the Moffateers club. “Ma and Pa established it in 1966 and I was one of the first to be invited to join,’’ Mr Parry tells My Weekly Preview. “I was 15 at that time. I had started surfing in 1964 in Kings Beach, Moffat Beach. You just carried your board on your head and off you went… a bit like an old movie. “Ma and Pa looked after all the young surfers and made sure we did the right thing. They established a better culture. Back in those days people used to frown on surfers… they gave us more credibility. “I used to live for it [surfing], before and after school. Later, Faye, for a time before we came back to the Coast just before we got married, was a Qantas hostess. I used to jump on flights as the husband paying 10 per cent and travel the world. I’d go surfing in Hawaii. I gave surfing away in about 2000. It got too crowded and I haven’t been out in the past 19 years. Now that I’m living where I’m living, the beach is only 90 metres away, I might go out when no one is around. “I’d do badly these days,” he adds with a laugh. Perhaps, there will be more time for Mr Parry to rediscover his old passion in the coming years. Though he’s quick to laugh off any talk about retirement. “Faye is waiting for me to retire. She’d like to live in the south of France for at least six months to get that experience of living in another culture… that’s where we’ll start.”

Making his mark
Mark Vincent and Tommy Fleming
From Australia’s Got Talent to a career on the world stage, it’s been a big decade for Mark Vincent. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
A
fresh-faced Mark Vincent burst onto the music scene with gusto when he won the third season of Australia’s Got Talent in 2009 at the age of 15. His powerful tenor voice and incredible stage presence saw him signed
immediately to Sony Music Australia. A decade on and Mr Vincent has released nine number one ARIA classical crossover albums and earned accolades both nationally and internationally. The Sydney-based singer made waves earlier this year with his groundbreaking
‘virtual duet’ of Because You’re Mine with Hollywood legend Mario Lanza and he has spent the last year with international soprano Katherine Jenkins and Tommy Fleming on their UK and Ireland tours respectively, performing in iconic venues including Royal Albert Hall in London. Now, Mr Fleming, whom Mr Vincent describes as “the John Farnham of Ireland, is returning the favour, heading to Australia to join Mr Vincent on a six-event tour of the country, which will include a performance at Caloundra. Speaking to My Weekly Preview, Mr Vincent says he heads to the Sunshine Coast for holidays with his wife every year and he looks forward to regional shows. “You are the best audience in every perspective, he says. The duo will belt out classics such as Nessun Dorma, Danny Boy, You
Raise Me Up and Hallelujah. Mr Vincent has found a motto in the words of Denzel Washington: “Dreams without goals are just dreamsâ€?. He says he has had many ‘pinch me’ moments throughout his career, including performing with Susan Boyle and making his musical theatre debut in 2014 in Dirty Dancing. He was later chosen by Dame Julie Andrews for the 2016 production of My Fair Lady with Opera Australia. “I’m hoping I will one day get to perform with Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban and Celine Dion. US-CHINA TRADE: DEVIL’S IN THE DETAIL
U
S president Donald Trump has announced a ‘Phase One’ deal with China, which still needs to be formalised in writing. The president expects this to be potentially signed off at the APEC Summit in Chile on November 16 to 17. The Phase One deal covers: 1. Purchases of agricultural products – China has offered to increase purchases to $US40-50 billion per annum, up from $US9 billion in 2018, and $US20 billion before the trade war started. 2. Financial sector accessibility – China is to abolish foreign ownership restrictions on various financial-sector firms. 3. Foreign exchange transparency – It appears an understanding has been reached around more transparency on both sides,
particularly regarding currency intervention. 4. Technology transfer and intellectual property – Again, no details were provided, with the US stating only that a partial agreement has been reached, with more details to come in ‘Phase Two’. 5. An enforcement mechanism – It is expected there will be some enforcement and escalation measures from both sides. In return for these concessions, the US has suspended tariff increases from 25 per cent to 30 per cent on $US250 billion of goods, although there is no update regarding the 15 per cent tariffs on additional products scheduled for December. President Trump may have called it a deal, but it contains few surprises and lacks detail and documentation, suggesting more work needs to be done on both sides. Even if a ‘Phase One’ deal is approved, we consider most of the promises, particularly from China, are not new, and represent areas of low-hanging fruit for both sides. In our view, the more problematic areas, such as restrictions on China’s state-owned enterprises, limits on technology transfers, and increased monitoring/enforcement of China to ensure compliance, remain stumbling blocks. These are expected to be scoped out further in ‘Phase Two’ negotiations, which won’t start until ‘Phase One’ is documented and signed. The announcement should thus be
negative for Australia’s agricultural industry if China reduced imports from us in order to meet demand under its US quota. Secondly, with the US expanding its range of punitive measures from tariffs to bans on selected Chinese companies, it does raise the question of what could become the next bargaining chip in the trade war.
treated as a temporary truce, with no reductions to tariffs already in place. The economic implications are therefore limited, and our global counterparts see no reason to change their forecasts for global growth at this stage. Given the fluid nature of trade negotiations, we stick with our relatively defensive investment positioning until there is more certainty around the final outcome of the talks. There are, however, two interesting considerations stemming from latest developments. Firstly, China’s agreement to purchase more agricultural products from the US. This jump in orders is sizeable and is likely

PROFILE
Stories from the heart Author Rachael Johns first used writing as an outlet for her emotional pain, but she never imagined it would turn into a successful career. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
R
achael Johns’ husband jokes that she tells lies for a living, and as one of Australia’s most successful authors, it’s not far from the truth. “All I do is sit around and make stories up; it’s not that important,” she says. “I’ve got friends who are midwives, teachers, mental health workers – those jobs seem to be more important to me. But then I get an email from a reader who says ‘your book drew me out of a depression’ or ‘brought me out of a dark time’. It’s emails like those when you realise fiction, film, music – they mean a lot to people and help people through dark times.” Ms Johns didn’t always dream of becoming a writer. She fell into it almost by accident, then discovered she liked it. After a devastating breakup at the age of 17, she began writing, and while she says her work was cringe-worthy at first, she found it therapeutic. “I never dreamt of being a writer and I wasn’t a big reader,” she says. “I wasn’t interested in the books they make you read in high school. I did reasonably well in English, but it wasn’t a huge passion of mine. I always wanted
to be a primary school teacher. Then a vet. Then I wanted to read the news for Channel Seven. Then I wanted to be a nutritionist. The closest I would’ve come to writing was doing six months of journalism at uni.” When she began to write at 17, she wasn’t sure if she had talent but she knew she enjoyed it. What began as a hobby became something she felt driven to make her vocation. “It took a long time,” she says. “I was writing for about 15 years before I finally got published. I targeted Mills and Boon for a few years. I did a writing degree at uni. They wanted you to write literary fiction and that wasn’t me. I wanted to write Bridget Jones’s Diary-type books.” The turning point in her career came when she connected with the Romance Writers of Australia organisation. “I met my publisher at a romance writers conference,” she says. “I had submitted to every publisher in Australia and had been rejected. Harlequin took my first book Jilted on and since then, so many other Australian publishers have approached me and started publishing a lot of other romance.”
Ms Johns began writing rural romance, then moved into contemporary women’s fiction, and has written 24 books including novellas and digital books. She is visiting the Sunshine Coast for the first time on November 8 to talk about her latest offering, Just One Wish. “I’m a jigsaw writer so the inspiration for this book came from different places and I put it all together to create one book. The main theme that started off this book was, what does it mean to be a woman, especially in this era where we can supposedly have it all? I wanted to explore the issue of whether we can have it all or if it’s making us more stressed. “There’s a few other fun things in there too – there’s the desire to go to Mars, there’s an Elvis Presley cruise. My books explore darker issues but in a light way.” When she first started out and her children were small, she’d write at night and on weekends. Now they’re all in school, she writes full-time, aiming for 2000 words a day. “I’m not what we call a plotter or outliner,” she says. “I do think a lot about character before the book starts. For this book there are three main characters. I wrote lots of notes about their backstory and I did a lot of pre-thinking. I like to know the end if I can but I don’t always. I don’t focus on structure consciously, but it’s in my head so it comes naturally now. “In the fiction world we say you’re either a plotter or a pantser [someone who flies by the seat of their pants]. Everyone is on the spectrum somewhere and I’m definitely in the middle. I just sit down and hope it works.” Ms Johns says it’s a myth that once you’re published, you’re a successful author and your fears subside as you watch the dollars roll in. “I still suffer hugely from self-doubt,” she says. “It’s crippling and it slows you down. It’s easy to think everyone else’s books are better. I have to remind myself, when I’m writing my first draft, I’m comparing it to somebody else’s award-winning bestselling novel, which has been through a number of drafts.” Ms Johns says she answers all correspondence from fans and loves meeting readers. She’s looking forward to meeting Sunshine Coast fans and will be in conversation with Sunshine Coast personality and author Mary-Lou Stephens.
The talk will be held at Buderim Tavern function room at 10am on November 8. For more information visit library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Whats-On/Author-Events/ Meet-Rachael-Johns.

MY OPINION
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
HOME SWEET HOME
Sami Muirhead wonders what meat-free burgers taste like as she reminisces about the joys of eating Red Rooster as a child.
Richard O’Leary has spent his life alternating between bush life and beach life and is happy to have his toes back in the sand.
I
was happy when most of the Red Rooster stores on the Coast re-opened this past week. Seven stores had shut their doors, so it was wonderful news to hear the national chain stood in and re-opened most of the stores, retaining 100 local jobs. That is a lot of families who will be very relieved. Now that alone is reason to shout the family a roast chicken with a side of mashed potato and gravy. Red Rooster is a bit of a primal memory for me as when I was a kid we would often celebrate birthdays and Mother’s Day with a roast chicken meal. I think it was because Mum was really strict but this form of takeaway was affordable and not a heart attack on a plate. Fast forward to now – when I am a mum and some nights when I am driving home from work at 7pm it is just easier to grab takeaway – I feel less guilty buying takeaway that at least comes with vegetables as an option. And the chips are pure heaven, right? Hot chips and hot donuts are a wonder of the world when it comes to comfort food. In other food-related news, this week my husband and I had a deep and meaningful about the fact he hates salad and it’s starting to make our kids swerve it too. After a decade of marriage, I am putting my foot down: he needs to give salad a second chance. Bring back the beetroot. Let lettuce return to the fold. So he insisted he would prepare a surprise salad for us to have with our spaghetti that night. He made a broccoli,
bean and kale dish served warm with lemon juice. It was delicious. But is it a salad? It really is a serve of vegetables, don’t you think? It belongs in a warm bain-marie not a cold salad buffet. But, baby steps in my battle to bring back the salads. All this tampering with the basics is driving me a bit bonkers. At Hobart Airport recently I bought nachos, with no corn chips. Is it still nachos I found myself asking? It was sour cream and salsa served on a bed of brown rice. Seems a bit dodgy to me. It is more of a spicy rice dish than nachos. A naked burrito is not really a burrito is it? It is a fancy salad. And what about these meat-free burgers that are all the trend? Hungry Jacks has released its zero beef burger called The Rebel Whopper. It supposedly tastes like beef but does not have a scrap of meat in the burger. In the United States, the beef-free burgers have long been trendy, along with shots of wheatgrass, acai bowls and charcoal lattes. The boss of Hungry Jacks in Australia says the franchise is targeting flexitarians. Yep, you can be a flexitarian. It is genius. You are a vegetarian for most of the time, but when you need a good serve of bacon or a big fat juicy steak, then no one can call you a hypocrite. Vegetarians, please do not send hate mail as I am quite in awe of your strength and animal cruelty ethics, but I just cannot do life without lasagne, chicken panang and hot salami sticks at happy hour.
I
was born just a short walk from a beach in southern New South Wales. My parents wouldn’t have been able to hear the surf, but the salty smell of the ocean would have been strong. And that could have been my life: sand, sea and surf. But my dad’s falling out with his brother saw him move the family 400 kilometres inland to a country town where the closest thing to the coastal life was a small strip of sand on the otherwise muddy banks of the meandering Macquarie River. It was a good place to grow up. Mates’ houses only a pushy ride away, rugby league, cricket, basketball and swimming in the Olympic pool on the weekends. The smell of eucalyptus and pollen. Everyone knew who you were, which was good when you were good and bad when you were bad. I loved the dry heat and the quickening of the pulse produced by the petrichor of a summer storm. I was a bush kid. Then I grew up, moved out and moved on. And that’s when I realised what I had missed. Renting an apartment above Newcastle Beach, I fell in love with all those different oceans I saw through salt-soaked windows. The glorious green sea gently frothing on a winter’s morning, the picture-postcard azure ocean of a summer’s day or the swirling black eddies illuminated by lightning and soundtracked by the growl of thunder.

“This dance has continued for decades…” bush surrounding my place provided a buffer between me and the rest of the world. A goanna stole all our chook eggs, foxes or wild dogs killed our hens, and only last week I had to remove a brown snake from the Tupperware cupboard with a pincer movement of mop and broom, but it was real, and raw and home. But the sea and salt has drawn me back. On Sunday I was scrunching sand between my toes as I watched my boys boogie board, after yet another move. The hills still beckon, but they can wait awhile. My children have some waves to catch.

But after months or sometimes years, I’d find myself missing the bush, and would go back again. This dance has continued for decades, and so it has during my time on the Sunshine Coast. When I first drove up the Bruce Highway I turned right at the Caloundra turnoff to first live at Golden Beach and then Moffat. But when I bought my home, I went inland to plant my feet in the rich soil of the hinterland. On acreage I could grow vegies and fruit trees, and the hundred acres of

TRAVEL
Bolivia’s
tourism heart Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni salt flats are a tourism treasure and a must visit for travellers to South America. WORDS: Pablo Gracia, AAP.
T
he Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat – not to mention the one located at the highest elevation – is the site selected by Bolivia as the heart of the country’s tourist attractions. “The Salar de Uyuni is the epicentre of tourism in Bolivia,” says the Bolivian Tourism and Cultures Minister Wilma Alanoca. “It’s one of the world treasures where one can find peace and, at the same time, cultural diversity.” The immense plain of salt was the site Bolivian authorities recently selected for a special event on World Tourism Day to recall how this natural treasure has been featured in films including the hugely popular Star Wars franchise. The salt flat, which covers some 10,500 square kilometres and is located at about 3600 metres above sea level, was recognised in July at the World Travel Awards as the Best Natural Tourist Attraction in South America. These awards
are considered the tourism sector’s most important international prize. A festival, Salt Fest 2019, was held on Incahuasi Island – which is covered with gigantic cactuses up to 12 metres high in the heart of the Salar – and was the scene of Bolivia’s World Tourism Day celebrations this year. The event included performances by Bolivian musical groups, gastronomic delights from different parts of the country and activities such as ziplining and bicycling, all of which enabled participants to incorporate entertainment, good food and physical activity into one of the world’s most exotic locales. “The Salar de Uyuni represents that mentality of sharing. We, as Bolivians, are sharing our diversity, our dances and our foods,” Ms Alanoca says. Salt Fest 2019, organised by the Bolivian Tourism and Cultures Ministry, invited members of the Star Wars Fan Club
to the event, with members surprising other event-goers by appearing outfitted as some of the beloved Star Wars characters created by filmmaker George Lucas. The flat white expanse of salt was one of the key filming locations for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and fans of the galactic space opera wanted to recall that film by bringing their costumes and lightsabers to the event. The tourism minister issued a call to Bolivians to “promote domestic tourism” and urged them to “continue falling in love with your country”. “Bolivia encompasses many mysteries and many treasures. Tourism doesn’t depend on institutions alone; it depends on every Bolivian,” Ms Alanoca says. Deputy Tourism Minister Marcelo Arze says the salt flat has “the mystic character”. “Culturally, the salt flat creates myths. Tunupa is one of the most important gods we have in Andean mythology and this place is one of reverence for us,” says Mr Arze, referring to the Salar’s original name, in honour of the god. Some 40,000 years ago, the salt desert was part of the great Ballivian inland sea, occupying a significant portion of the Altiplano, which also includes Lakes Titicaca, Popoo and Uru Uru. Dotted with about 80 small islands with exotic vegetation, the Salar is also considered potentially the world’s most important deposit of lithium, a valuable metal with multiple uses.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
Leos love to be the top cat, but this week you need to ask yourself “Am I leading others or just bossing them around?” If you power ahead without considering others, you’ll create strife. Strive to accommodate the needs of those around you.
Your ruling planet Mercury is retrograde, which can increase self-criticism and dent confidence. This week, with proactive Mars marching through your self-esteem zone, it’s time to hold your head high and trust your inner judgement.
Saturn and Neptune inspire you to contemplate your future. Whether you want to build a home, expand your family or change jobs, begin with a dream and then work hard to make it a reality. Dreams are wasted if you don’t turn them into productive projects!
Mighty Mars squares powerful Pluto on Tuesday, which boosts your temperamental streak and your Scorpio control-freak tendencies. You’ll find the more stubborn you are, the more challenging the week will be.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Sagittarians are feisty souls, but don’t allow yourself to be drawn into a heated exchange early in the week. With Mercury reversing through your privacy zone (until November 20) slow down and chill out as you relax, review, recharge and revisit.
This week, there’s a practical and magical connection between Neptune and Saturn (your power planet). There is much satisfaction to be gained through contributing your considerable talents to a worthy cause within your community.
If you stir up grievances with an old adversary early in the week, you could find you’ve bitten off more than you can comfortably chew! Saturn and Neptune connect (on Friday and Saturday), which favours balancing material and spiritual needs.
Have you been worrying about your professional options in the future? The ideal is to follow your dreams and make your day-to-day work a pleasure rather than a full-time chore. The Neptune/Saturn link favours turning an abstract idea into a reality.

The combination of retrograde Mercury and the Mars/Pluto square could exacerbate a problem with a friend or family member. But if you work hard on improving your communication skills, the partnership will gradually improve.

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)

RENTAL AGREEMENTS GO HI-TECH
Blockchain technology is now being used in the implementation of digital residential tenancy agreements, making things a lot more efficient.
T
he Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) is set to deliver the world’s first fully digitised residential tenancy agreements. The proptech innovation will see residential tenancy agreements able to be executed as a digital smart contract in Queensland by the end of this year. The groundbreaking system has the potential to transform the way tenancy agreements are transacted across the nation and around the globe, and create an unparalleled, real-time database of rental prices and trends. REIQ general manager Josh Callaghan says the revolutionary product benefits all parties to the agreement by providing more transparency and enabling new functions that can benefit everyone. “All parties will have visibility over the contract at any time from the palm of their
hand. By executing as a smart contract, we’re also able to build out the functionality to handle payments of bond and rent, plus facilitate other activities related to the property such as routine inspections and maintenance,” Mr Callaghan says. “Since the inception of smart contracts, their application to real estate contracts seemed obvious to me. We were very fortunate to discover an Australian-based startup that also shared that vision.” The REIQ has partnered with Queensland technology firm Igloo to create the new-generation tenancy agreement product, available via the institute’s Realworks form generation software. Igloo founder and CEO Jeremy Hastings says a partnership with the REIQ is the marriage of opportunity for the two organisations whose shared vision and values led to a meaningful outcome. “As a startup, we knew that our world-

leading technology could vastly improve the way that people are connected with property, but we needed an established partner to take it to market,” Mr Hastings says. “The REIQ not only had the most widely used forms product in the state, it was also open to challenging the status quo – an essential element for working with us to drive value back into the tenancy process.” Mr Callaghan says the new smart contracts will use blockchain technology to create a simple and secure transaction for each tenancy agreement that would leverage the benefits of the technology

as an irrefutable source of truth. He says the technology has far-reaching applications for the real estate sector, particularly as more ancillary services come online. “Most people have heard about blockchain in the context of Bitcoin, which is somewhat unfortunate as the technology has applications for every sector. Smart contracts, in particular, are clearly the way of the future in a form of law that has relied on a hand-written signature for literally thousands of years,” he says. “At its simplest, a smart contract is a digital contract that can live beyond its initial execution by facilitating transactions and giving all parties a central record of what has happened during the tenancy.” Mr Callaghan says the innovation will make renting a property much easier and more transparent for tenants. “This solution has been designed to reduce the manual handling of contracts from the property manager side, while streamlining the process for tenants and giving both parties much better visibility over the agreement,” he says. As well as upending the way residential tenancy agreements are executed in Queensland, the proptech innovation will ultimately create a real-time view of the state’s rental market. “The instant a tenancy agreement is signed, we will know how much a property was rented for, how long the agreement is for, how long it was vacant and so on, which will give the REIQ unprecedented insights into rental market trends as it happens,” Mr Callaghan says. He says at present, property investors have to rely on rental data that may not reflect the actual details of the tenancy agreement. “This new level of property market visibility will make Queensland one of the most attractive property investment destinations in the world,” he says.

MARKET QUICK TO SECURE PREMIUM GOLF COURSE FRONTAGE LOTS IN VANTAGE COOLUM
T
he allure of premium golf-front land has proved to be irresistible with buyers securing 10 lots since the final land release in midAugust in the exclusive Sekisui Housedeveloped Vantage Coolum gated estate. Sekisui House project director Evan Aldridge says the opportunity to build a dream home overlooking an established 18-hole golf course is driving much of the demand, particularly with the scarcity of level, vacant land around Coolum and Yaroomba. “To have sold 50 per cent of the lots has been a very positive response considering the blocks have only been on the market since August,” Mr Aldridge says. “Clearly the buyers are appreciating the unique opportunity to live in a beautifully landscaped estate, which is close to the beach, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. “Buyers can choose from land ranging in size from a spacious 470 square metres to 972 square metres, all level and ready to build on, which will help keep building costs down so buyers can focus on building their dream home.
Coolum beaches,” Mr Walker says “Many of the current buyers love the ambiance of the gated Vantage Coolum estate – it’s safe and secure and when you overlook a lush golf course, you can enjoy a wonderful relaxed vibe which means you can live like you are on holidays all year round.” Interested parties can visit the onsite sales office every Wednesday and Saturday from 10am until 2pm or by appointment any other time.
AT A GLANCE
“It’s rare to have uninterrupted views of a lush green golf course, but that’s exactly what these 20 lucky purchasers can enjoy every day, safe in the knowledge that they will never be built out,” he adds. Place Projects’ Syd Walker says recent research indicates land prices in the northern beaches area of the Sunshine Coast have steadily increased since April. “Looking more generally at the first six
months of 2019, median lot prices within the northern beaches are up 10.7 per cent to $423,875. From our perspective, the current Vantage Coolum land release presents great value for money. “It’s difficult to see these prices easing off considering the scarcity of land around the northern beaches area and the close proximity the current land release has to amenities and pristine Yaroomba and

RECORD INTEREST FOR MOSAIC’S COOLUM RELEASE
F
ollowing the success of its first luxury development Drift by Mosaic in Coolum, which sold out in record time and is due for completion this year, Mosaic Property Group unveiled its second, highly anticipated beachfront release, First Bay by Mosaic, which has received more than 680 enquiries and a waitlist of buyers generated in just eight weeks. Taking its name from the bay it overlooks, First Bay by Mosaic comprises 38 luxury apartments and penthouses across two architecturally distinct buildings. The exclusive oceanfront masterpiece building captures the essence of coastal luxury, showcasing opulent design and the finest materials including stone benchtops, artisan finishes and engineered oak timber flooring. The limited collection of 11 three-bedroom residences start at $1,157,000, crowned with one Masterpiece Penthouse providing more than 300 square metres of combined living space. First Bay’s Marquee building includes 26 two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, designed to optimise priceless views, starting at $615,000. Highlights include expansive living spaces, large double-glazed windows and doors,
elevated ceilings and first-class appliances. Private resident amenities include a beach entry with shower, surfboard and bike storage and resort-style pool and entertaining area. More than 600 square metres of native landscaping preserves the natural sense of place. Mosaic founder and managing director Brook Monahan says it was imperative that First Bay’s design reflect the rare nature of the location, remaining sympathetic to the landscape, and catering to the demand for premium living options.“Drift by Mosaic kick-started a luxury revolution for Coolum, selling out in a record three months, largely to local owner-occupiers,” he says. “We received overwhelming feedback
stand-out collection of apartments that embrace Coolum’s appealing atmosphere, where every detail has been meticulously planned. “First Bay is so exclusive that enquiry exceeded expectations with several buyers who missed out on Drift eager to be among the lucky few to secure a home here.” First Bay by Mosaic is the company’s fifth multi-residential project for the Sunshine Coast and follows the late-2018 release of UDIA award-winning Avalon in Maroochydore. “We have worked very closely with the Coolum community to create two benchmark developments that positively contribute to its unique character, building on the great lifestyle attributes it already provides,” Mr Monahan says.

COFFEE AND CONNECT TIME WITH MAROOCHYDORE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
MAROOCHYDORE CITY CENTRE OPENS NEW EVENT SPACE
T
he new Maroochydore City Centre project is setting the stage for festivals, performances and exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast with an indoor/outdoor event space for hire in the heart of the CBD. Metropolitan, known as the MET, is a temporary and ever-evolving space, which has been designed to enable the community to engage with their future Maroochydore City Centre now. Featuring an outdoor grassed amphitheatre with stage, container bar and flexible workspace, it is the perfect combination of infrastructure to present a range of arts, community and entertainment events. “It’s a space like no other on the Coast and we’ve already hosted a number of events including our People’s Day as well as the recent Horizon Festival Central,”
says Bronwyn Adams, the project manager city activation. “The MET has been designed to engage with and support businesses, community groups and individuals in the arts, design, technology, entrepreneurial, hospitality and events sectors. “Available all year round, it has scope to be the space for small private functions through to large-scale events of up to 2000 people.” Ms Adams says people can select a combination of spaces in the MET to suit their event with the indoor workspace suitable for 75 people, but able to be extended with a covered verandah and outdoor furniture so it can cater to 175 people. “This space is perfect for workshops, events, presentations, art installations and product displays,” she says.
“There is an option to create a licensed drinking area by combining the workspace, the courtyard and our custom-designed container bar, which is fitted with three lift-up server panels, use of a cold room, glass racks and more. This area has the capacity for 400 people. Ms Adams says she had already received several enquiries and bookings for end-of-year functions with free wifi, unisex toilets, a ping pong table, chairs, tables and beanbags all included in the MET’s hiring packages. More information on the MET can be found at mccmetropolitan.com.au Address: Corner First Avenue and South Sea Islander Way, Maroochydore Facebook: facebook.com/mccmetropolitan Instagram: @mccmetropolitan
The Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its next Coffee and Connect morning at The MET on First Avenue in the heart of the new CBD on Friday, November 8. The event, from 7.30am to 8.30am, includes a free coffee and light breakfast along with a construction update of the city centre’s first commercial building, Foundation Place, from Evans Long director Dirk Long. SunCentral Maroochydore chief executive officer John Knaggs will also update the business community on the new CBD project. Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce president Brendan Bathersby says the Coffee and Connect events are a great way for current and future members to network in an informal environment. “It’s also a great opportunity to learn a little more about what’s happening within the new CBD. Our Chamber is thrilled to have such an important project within our area and it’s important that our members understand the value and opportunities this major infrastructure investment will present over the next 20 years,” Mr Bathersby says. All attendees must register via maroochy.org.
