FROM THE EDITOR

I

must admit, I’ve never been that great with sun safety. I spent years travelling as a backpacker in sunny destinations in my twenties and never wore sunscreen or a hat. Stupid, I know. As a child, I remember getting sunburnt and peeling large sheets of skin off a few days later as it began to heal. There was always a competition between my brother and me to see who could peel the biggest sheet of skin off. It was strangely satisfying. And as we know now, very dangerous. Fortunately, I haven’t developed any skin cancers. Yet. For many people, it’s not really if, but when, especially living in Queensland (though I am more sensible these days). Roxanne McCartyO’Kane’s cover story is a compelling read. She thought she had a pimple underneath her hair and it turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma. You’d think we’d all have the Slip, Slop, Slap message by now, but a surprising number of us are still not heeding the warnings, so this story is a timely reminder. Also this week, I chat with Aussie country music superstar Lee Kernaghan – you’ll be surprised to find out where he got his start in music. For a bit of fun, turn to page 38 for some fabulous pics of Dui Cameron’s Indian home. Ms Cameron is the exuberant founder of Sunshine Coast clothing label Boom Shankar and she lives in kaleidoscopically colourful homes in Peregian and Rajasthan. What a life! Enjoy and see you next week.

QUICK CHAT

THE GOOD LIFE Where do you live? Peregian Springs, a fantastic family area. First job Flipping burgers at a fun park in WA. What are you currently working on? Trying to get the balance spot on in our sour beer with passionfruit and mango. Your family includes? A patient wife, four impatient children and a very confused dog. First car Holden Torana. Favourite book? The Passage by Justin Cronin. If your life was a book, what would be the title? Where to Next! I’ve moved a lot – four different states and eight different regions, but I’m not leaving the Sunshine Coast! What are you reading now? The Body by Bill Bryson.

Brewer

Chris Sheehan BIO

Chris Sheehan is the head brewer at the Eumundi Brewery. He’s also responsible for micro breweries in Perth, Byron Bay, Townsville and Auckland. For the greater good of beer, Mr Sheehan has worked in a multitude of breweries across Australia before hitting the jackpot and getting the opportunity to live and work in the thriving Sunshine Coast beer scene.

IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

Favourite song? Faith No More’s Caffeine. What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? I am waiting for The Mandalorian on the new Disney Channel. Star Wars on TV!

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? The day I failed my final school exams. It led me to being a brewer. Your greatest regret? Those lessons I didn’t learn from. I don’t tend to dwell, but I try and take something out of everything that doesn’t go to plan. What achievement are you most proud of? My children (three boys and a daughter) developing into the people they are. I am grateful that they have the opportunity to group up in an area like the Sunshine Coast. You are happiest when? When all the chores are done and I can finally relax! I’m the opposite of procrastinator, which is not necessarily a good thing. What frustrates you the most? Narrowminded people that can’t always see things from perspectives other than their own.

“Sometimes the world finds you, so don’t be afraid to make it up as you go”

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Touch football last Thursday. Best advice you’ve been given? You’re are not defined by what you do when you are awake – it is how well you sleep. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? Eumundi. It has a collective and creative vibe and I am incredibly fortunate to work in this beautiful town. If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? The name ‘Sunshine’ sounds like it came out of a boardroom. Surely we can come up with something more original? Best day in your life and why? The day I realised I could make a career out of my hobby. Doing what I love each and every day is a blessing.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Walk away, then work out if and when I need to go back to them. Sometimes leaving them alone is better than burning angst on them. If I have to, deep breathing and counting to 10 helps.

If you could tell your 18-year-old selfanything, what would it be? Write your own script. Sometimes the world finds you, so don’t be afraid to make it up as you go. If not, just have fun, safely! If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? My kids as adults. I would listen intently to what I could do better. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Pay the bank back, then procrastinate for a while. One because I don’t give myself enough time to procrastinate and two because $1 million would be a good reason to start. Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Coffee, piccolo – so I can have several. NRL or AFL? Both. Why choose?

A pet cockatoo at the centre of a bitter neighbourhood dispute because of its screeching has been cleared of wrongdoing, in a case described by an Adelaide judge as “completely unjustified”. The dispute was settled in the District Court of South Australia this week, after a woman’s decision to take the family next door to court backfired. She had lived in her northern suburbs rental property for a few months when, earlier this year, she asked a magistrate to award her damages because her neighbours were causing a nuisance. In the claim, she said the family’s cockatoo screeches, their dogs bark “day and night”, their young children play outside and “often scream as loud as they can” and the man whistles while he mows the lawn. Investigations by the City of Prospect council disproved the allegations. The family, however, lodged a counter-claim, alleging the woman harassed them by needlessly calling the police to their property 15 times in five months, including six times because of “loud talking on Christmas Day”. –AAP

Australia has the highest age-standardised rate for melanoma in the world. Queensland has the highest rates in Australia, with 3962 Queenslanders diagnosed with a melanoma in 2016 (the latest figures), with 319 dying from the disease. Of those diagnosed, 2331 were male and 1631 were female.

DO YOU REMEMBER? Slathering your skin with baby oil to get a deep tan? It was common practice in the 1960s and for decades afterwards. A vintage ad for Johnson’s Baby Oil boasted: “It has no sunscreen like tanning lotions and creams. So there’s nothing to block out the golden sun. You tan faster and deeper than ever before.” Of course, this practice is now known to be unsafe.

WORD OF THE WEEK Eudaimonia A Greek word that describes the contented state you feel when you travel.

DID YOU KNOW?

The hole in the ozone layer has made no appreciable difference to skin cancer rates in Australia and New Zealand, according to the Cancer Council. It was believed the hole in the ozone layer was the cause of our excess skin cancer rates, however, the reality is fair-skinned people are not genetically suited to Australia’s climate.

COVER STORY

Get sun smart As the temperature climbs and the sun emits its harmful UV rays, the experts are again reminding all Australians to slip, slop, slap. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

A

few weeks ago, I became a statistic. I am now one of the 434,000 Australians who have been or will be treated for one or more non-melanoma skin cancers this year. There is no doubt that the ‘c’ word caused me heart palpitations and sweaty palms, but my GP quickly reassured me that if I were to get skin cancer, I’d got the best possible one – basal cell carcinoma (BCC). While it’s still not a great outcome, most likely caused by years spent growing up in the surf without wearing a hat, it is the most common form of skin cancer found in Australians. It does grow larger, damaging the tissue around it, but it doesn’t metasticise, or spread to other parts of the body. When I first found this lump just above my hairline on my forehead, I assumed it was a pimple and proceeded to squeeze it and douse it with tea tree and for a week it seemed to disappear. Then it came back with a vengeance and it continued to grow before taking on a shiny appearance. It was the final evolution that prompted me to take myself off to the doctor. A quick look through a magnifying lens and she declared, “There’s blood vessels on top of this thing – it has to come out.” The test results confirmed it was a BCC but there was a little bit that had been left behind from the first attempt at removal. A second attempt was made and so I

10 My Weekly Preview | November 8, 2019

now have a five-centimetre cut on my scalp, held together by five stitches and next week, I will find out if I am officially clear of the little bugger. The next step for me is a thorough skin check, which I will now do every six months. This has taught me to be hyper-vigilant with ensuring my entire family is sun smart every day, not just those when it is blisteringly hot outside. With National Skin Cancer Action Week

can prevent them by implementing the old slip, slop, slap, seek (shade) and slide (on sunglasses) whenever you head out into the sun. According to Queensland Health’s Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy 2017 to 2020 document, only 22 per cent of adults and 47 per cent of children in Queensland practise three sun-safe behaviours when outdoors, such as applying SPF30+ sunscreen, wearing broad-brimmed hats

“On cloudy and cool days, there is usually less infrared radiation [felt as heat] and visible light … but UV radiation can still be as intense as on sunny days” Dr Leona Yip

running from November 17 to 23, I implore all of you to also take heed of my cautionary tale and pay attention to any changes that happen on your skin. According to the Cancer Council, two in three Australians are diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70. It is estimated that more than 15,200 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma – the most deadly form of skin cancer – this year, and more than 1720 will sadly die from the disease. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the major cause of skin cancers and you

and protective clothing that would deliver adequate skin protection to prevent sun-induced skin damage. According to one of Australia’s leading dermatologists, Dr Leona Yip, “Five minutes in the sun without protection is five minutes too long.” “On cloudy and cool days, there is usually less infrared radiation [felt as heat] and visible light [seen as sunlight], but UV radiation can still be as intense as on sunny days. UV radiation cannot be seen or felt and therefore is an invisible danger,” Dr Yip says.

“Being sun smart isn’t just about being safe; it’s about life and preventing deadly skin cancers. Melanoma kills more young Australians than any other cancer. Sounds harsh, but in my profession, it’s absolutely true.” Dr Yip says it’s important for adult role models such as parents, grandparents and carers to instil the sun safety message in children and to be proactive in ensuring they leave the house every day as protected as possible, as exposure to UV radiation during childhood and adolescence greatly influences skin cancer risk in adulthood. It is important to be a role model by doing it yourself, and not taking a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude. A national Cancer Council study examining role modelling of sun protection behaviours in Australian adults highlights that parents are regularly protecting their children, but aren’t as good at protecting themselves. The 2019 Summer Sun Protection Survey (Life in Australia), examined the sun protection practices of 2154 Australian adults, including 401 parents of young children aged one to 12, last January and February. More than 80 per cent of parents reported that their young child’s skin was regularly protected from the sun when outdoors, but around 44 per cent regularly protected their own skin from the sun. Cancer Council Australia’s National Skin Cancer Committee chair Heather Walker says it is important for parents to think about themselves too. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

6 KEY POINTS Skin cancers account for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers. The majority of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sun. GPs have more than 1 million patient consultations per year for skin cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer is more common in men, with almost double the incidence compared with women. The incidence of skin cancer in Australia is one of the highest in the world, two to three times the rates in Canada, the US and the UK. In 2016, 1960 people died from skin cancer in Australia – 1281 from melanoma and 679 from non-melanoma skin cancers. Source: Cancer Council Australia

In Australia, sun protection is required when UV levels reach three or above, which occurs right across the country in spring. “Despite its prevalence, most skin cancer can be prevented by using good sun protection. The free SunSmart app tells you

when sun protection is recommended for your location and provides current UV levels,” Ms Walker says. “Sun protection times can also be found on the Bureau of Meteorology website.” There is still plenty of work to do with Aussie teens, with an alarming 62 per cent saying their friends think a tan is a good thing. The Cancer Council’s National Sun Protection Survey provides a snapshot of Australian teenagers’ beliefs about tanning and 38 per cent of teens say they like to get a tan. Young women proved to have a greater desire to tan, with 43 per cent saying they prefer a tan. In light of the findings, Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists are calling on teenagers and young adults to own their skin tone this National Skin Cancer Action Week. The #OwnYourTone campaign aims to encourage teenagers and young people to embrace their natural beauty and protect their skin from the sun. Australasian College of Dermatologists president Dr Andrew Miller says the true meaning of a tan needs to be understood. “Tanning is a sign that you have been exposed to enough UV radiation to damage your skin and we need to make sure teenagers get this message to prevent a rise in the incidence of skin cancer for the next generation,” he says.

What’s in your sunscreen?

Sunscreen – it is an essential component in your tool kit to prevent sunburn and skin cancers, but it’s important to remember that it’s not a suit of armour and should be used with other sun protection measures. In other countries, sunscreens are considered cosmetics, but Australia regulates sunscreens as medicines. They must be listed with the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and must go through rigorous testing to ensure they meet claimed SPF (sun protection factor). But what is the best type of sunscreen to use? A report released earlier this year by the FDA (the US Food and Drug Administration) states that only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are recognised as safe and effective sunscreen ingredients. These ingredients are known broadspectrum physical sun protection, which reflect and scatter harmful UVA and UVB rays from our skin. The organic filters are generally considered safer than chemical sunscreens, but they can give you a ghostly appearance, leading consumers to either avoid them or use less than is needed to be effective. The micronising process, which makes the metal particles smaller, has solved this problem of ‘ghosting’ to a large extent, but has given rise to new concerns – such small

particles may fall into the nano range, and these so-called nanoparticles carry their own safety concerns. Australian consumer group Choice says research to date has not found nanoparticles in sunscreen can penetrate below the outer layers of skin, unless the skin is broken. In addition, manufacturers can coat the nanoparticles so they don’t react to form potentially hazardous free radicals. Certainly, the benefits of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide outweigh known risks. Chemical sunscreen ingredients such as octinoxate, octocrylene, avobenzone and oxybenzone absorb UV energy and stop it penetrating the skin, but Choice says some chemical filters can cause skin irritation. There’s also concern that some chemical sunscreens are endocrine disruptors, which means they have hormonal effects in humans. These include oxybenzone, octyl methoxycinnamate, homosalate and 4-MBC. “While this activity has been shown in animals and tissue tests, the doses used in testing are vastly greater than the amount used for human sun protection,” the Choice website states.

AFL PRE-SEASON CAMPS BRING ECONOMIC BENEFIT TO THE SUNSHINE COAST A third of the AFL’s teams will descend on the Sunshine Coast for their 2020 pre-season camps, injecting at least $400,000 into the local economy. Hawthorn, GWS Giants, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Carlton football clubs plus a sixth club, yet to be announced, will use the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex facilities for their Ed Curnow, Carlton Football Club training camps. Hawthorn and GWS Giants will both hit the Coast before Christmas for their camps, while the Western Bulldogs, Melbourne and Carlton arrive after Christmas. A spot for the sixth club is still being negotiated. Tourism, Sport and Major Events portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the recently completed $3.1 million upgrade to the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex – which included new change rooms and amenities, first aid, medical rooms and administration offices – will help continue to attract elite sporting clubs to the region. Each club will have an open session the community can attend to watch training. Keep an eye on the council’s Facebook page or the clubs’ websites and social media channels.

CHRISTMAS FUN FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES The Vantage Homes Sixth Annual STEPS Autism Treehouse Christmas Party is gearing up for December 1, and is the Sunshine Coast’s largest Christmas event for young people and families living with autism and disability. Held at the Kawana Sports Precinct, STEPS has created a special Christmas party where families living with disability can enjoy a fun-filled day in a supportive environment. The event includes rides, activities, Santa giving out gifts, chill-out zones, allied health exhibits, massages for parents, all in a supported environment and all included in the $10 ticket price. To find out more, visit stepsautismtreehouse.org.au.

The Sunshine Coast will be home to a new annual two-day skateboarding festival at the new Aura Skatepark. The Skate Connection Skateboarding Festival will help raise awareness for Kids Helpline and its amazing services. The event will launch on January 18 and 19 with multiple contests, learn-to-skate programs, demonstrations, stalls and other festivities. The event is partnered with the Sunshine Coast Council, Stockland Aura, Etnies, Theeve Trucks, Skate Connection and of course, Kids Helpline. For more information, visit australianskateboarding.com.

$78,000

$12.5 MILLION BARINGA TAVERN LAUNCHED

Scott & Kellie Armstrong

Stockland and Sunshine Coast Hotels have launched the expansive $12.5 million Baringa Tavern in Aura. Located on the corner of Aura Boulevard and Edwards Terrace, the new family-friendly tavern is spread across 1300 square metres – larger than an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Hotel operators and co-owners Richard Deery from the Story Bridge Hotel and Scott Armstrong from Sunshine Coast Hotels will oversee management of the community’s first entertainment offering. Mr Armstrong says he knows locals have been eagerly waiting for Baringa Tavern to open. “The decor pays homage to the history of Caloundra with original artwork and artefacts and a stunning main bar which forms the centrepiece of the bistro dining area,” he says. “There is also a large outdoor verandah space, which has a beautiful view over the parkland area. This is, of course, in addition to the sports bar complete with a 15-metre video wall, and a total of 40 taps available between the two bars.” Baringa Tavern will operate from 10am to midnight from Sunday to Thursday and 10am to 2am on Friday and Saturday. There will also be a courtesy bus available for locals at designated times throughout the week.

BUSINESS LEADERS PUSH FOR MORE INFRASTRUCTURE Infrastructure investment, with a particular focus on transport, education and training, was at the forefront of discussion during the fourth annual Sunshine Coast Business Council’s (SCBC) Combined Government & Business Forum. SCBC chair Sandy Zubrinich says the forum, which was held at the Innovation Centre, is an important collaboration of more than 70 government, business and community representatives. “We don’t believe one tier of government can do this on their own and we do believe the business community needs to step up when it comes to investment, especially in regards to digitalisation transformation.”

Ken Mills Toyota hosted the fifth annual ‘Millsy’s Pop-Up Restaurant’ on October 26, raising $78,000 in just over four hours – a record amount for the unique dining experience. Each year, Ken Mills Toyota staff volunteer to transform the Maroochydore Service Workshop into a restaurant for 150 people to raise much-needed funds for a Sunshine Coast cause. This year’s event beneficiary was Give Me Five For Kids; specifically for the purchase of a special piece of transport equipment for the Paediatric Critical Care Unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The stretcher will dramatically improve time taken to transport critically ill kids from the coast to specialist care.

TOP MARKS FOR PUMICESTONE PASSAGE The latest results from the annual Healthy Land and Water Report Card shows the Sunshine Coast Council is already on track to achieve good or excellent grades, across all catchments – a target set in the Environment and Liveability Strategy (ELS). Notably, Pumicestone Passage received an A-minus for its ecological health, up from a B-plus last year, and received four stars for its benefits rating, highlighting that the passage is highly valued by the community and local businesses. Each year, thanks to the local Environment Levy, Sunshine Coast Council participates in the Healthy Land and Water Monitoring Program – one of the most comprehensive waterway monitoring programs in Australia.

SPEAK UP AND ENGAGE An enterprising group of young people are having their say on the future of the region, and they’re inviting other young people to speak up too. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Y

oung people on the Sunshine Coast are speaking up and they are asking for support to create a purposebuilt youth facility. A group of 15 young people aged between 12 and 25 joined the Sunshine Coast Council’s Speak Up Engage youth advisory group at that start of the year and are now hosting a free community event to raise awareness of the need for a purpose-built ‘hang out’ for young people to connect, feel safe and channel their creativity. Speak Up Engage group member Aydan Rusev says they have been consulted by the council on a number of large projects for the region, including the Coast’s biosphere application, but the group also wanted to work together on an event to gauge interest and support for a new venue for young people. The result of their collaborative efforts is the Youth Coast #SpeakUpEngage. The event will be held on November 16 from 11am to 2pm at Thrive Youth Sunshine Coast on Aerodrome Road, Maroochydore and will incorporate live music and entertainment, food, guest speakers and other activities.

Mason Hope will be performing live and connecting to young people in his role as Headspace ambassador and an advocate for the work being done by the Speak Up Engage team. “The purpose of this event is to show that we do have a voice and we are willing to take the action we need to see change happen,” Aydan says. “Our ultimate goal is to see a space provided on the Coast specifically designed for young people and having support for this event with people coming along will be our

way of showing the Council there is support for this and it’s what people really want.” The 16-year-old Sunshine Coast Grammar student says he has thrived in his role on the Speak Up Engage program, which was created by the council to bridge the gap between sitting councillors and young people in the region as well as provide an opportunity for youth to upskill in areas of leadership. “We live here too and it’s important for young people to be taken into account as much as it is for every other demographic on

the Coast. This program shows the council is taking strides to close that gap and this event … will prove we are willing to put in the effort to get this project off the ground,” he says. Community Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says former Speak Up Engage participants worked alongside council to create the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Plan, guiding the support provided to young people and the youth services sector in our region until 2021. “The new program offers free formal professional and personal development training by program partners CQUniversity and unique opportunities to provide advice to council on youth related matters,” Cr McKay says. Aydan says earlier this year, the 2019 group released a Speak Up Engage app, which was a survey designed to capture a snapshot of the thoughts of young people under the age of 25 across the region and how they feel facilities and services can be improved. You can download the app by searching for Speak Up Engage in iTunes or on android. For more information, check out the Speak Up Engage group on Facebook.

LITTLE LUCAS AWARDED HIS BLACK BELT Coolum’s Lucas Wood may be small of stature, but this nine-year-old can sure pack a punch. Lucas achieved his Tae Kwon Do black belt after six years of incredibly hard work and determination. Instructor Brian Reardon, a two-time world champion, says Lucas started learning martial arts with ATI Martial Arts as a Little Dragon not long after the club first opened in Coolum in October 2013. “Lucas worked his way through the curriculum of the Little Dragons program from the age of three,” Mr Reardon says. “When he first came into the club, Lucas was so small and full of respect and energy. This is a testament to good parenting. No matter what, Lucas showed up to class.” Lucas progressed to the larger class format covering significantly harder techniques. “Fast forward through three to four years of challenges from contact, sequential movement, social and leadership initiatives, setbacks, personal struggles and you find a talented highly skilled young nine-year-old who has just completed his black belt,” Mr Reardon says.“Not only did he achieve this, but he was the first student at ATIMA QLD to have gone through all of the initial programs. “It takes a special character to be able to stay this consistent and break through so many barriers on their way to this recognised level.”

Lucas and Sophia Wood

Lucas has had to get through grappling, boxing, take-down, kicking, sparring, pattern work curriculums all in an exercise-based martial arts format. “Black Belt is not a final destination, rather the start of a new journey to put so many tools learnt into the right context,” Mr Reardon says. Lucas is now working his way through weapons defence training drills, passing his skills onto others. His young sister Sophia has just begun the Little Dragons program.

NO NEED TO THROW IN THE TOWEL Many small to medium businesses are unaware of the government’s Safe Harbour legislation, which gives struggling businesses a bit of breathing space when they fall on tough times. Words: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

R

enowned demographer Bernard Salt has called the Sunshine Coast the entrepreneurship capital of Australia and with more than 32,000 small businesses, accounting for 90 per cent of all businesses in the region, it is easy to see why. But despite so many Coast residents owning and operating their own businesses, it is not always smooth sailing. According to ASIC, 8105 Australian companies entered into a form of external administration for the first time in 2018-19, up from 7747 in 2017-18. The director of Coast-based business mentor company Holiwell, Andy Vautier, says a lot of small- to medium-sized entities (SMEs) on the Coast do not realise the government introduced Safe Harbour legislation two years ago that effectively gives struggling businesses space to breathe, re-assess their business strategy and seek help to avoid liquidation. Under the legislation, personal liability does not apply “if at a particular time after the person starts to suspect the company may become or be insolvent, the person starts developing one or more courses of action that are reasonably likely to lead to a better outcome for the company; and the

debt is incurred directly or indirectly in connection with any such course of action during the period starting at that time”. Mr Vautier says directors are excluded from the safe harbour if their organisation hasn’t paid all employee entitlements, has outstanding tax lodgements or hasn’t kept up-to-date records. As a business mentor who steps in to prevent businesses from reaching the critical point where they have to consider calling in an administrator or liquidator, Mr Vautier wants to educate Coast business owners that the legislation exists and can actually be used in conjunction with a sound strategy to help business owners stay on their feet and continue on with their businesses. According the report Safe Harbour in Practice in the Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association Journal, 2019, two years after the safe harbour legislation took effect, boards of about half of all large and listed businesses that have a “liquidity event” have taken steps to ensure they can meet the safe harbour eligibility criteria. However, that drops down to about five per cent for SMEs. “Overall, safe harbour advice was evident in fewer than 15 per cent of external administrations. This figure increased to almost 50 per cent for ASX-listed and large proprietary companies,” the report states. Mr Vautier says a lot of business owners who are unaware of the support services available can tend to “put their head in the sand and think there’s no way out” other than to close the doors and call a liquidator. “Timing is critical in seeking assistance,” he says. “You cannot claim Safe Harbour if you are already insolvent. We are working to educate not only business owners but accountants and other professional services that this exists because my advice to someone that is starting to struggle is to talk to your accountant about how things are going, look at what assistance is out there on a consultancy and mentoring level and enlist them to help you put a plan together. There are some guidelines around accessing Safe Harbour, but it can become part of that plan. “In Safe Harbour, businesses can continue to trade,

“You don’t need to be in a state of stress about your business, there are people who will help” Andy Vautier

negotiate with creditors and suppliers while implementing a plan to recovery, without the legal ramifications previously associated with insolvent trading.” There is no doubt that successfully restructuring a distressed business is hard to do and this is why Mr Vautier advocates for all business owners to stay on top of their numbers as well as their mental health. “You don’t need to be in a state of stress about your business. There are people who will help you relieve that stress,” he says. “The Sunshine Coast Council’s B-Well and Prosper program is free and all about helping small business. The best thing is to be proactive about a solution and seek assistance and guidance. “We are living in an age where there is a lot more awareness about mental health, which is great, but when the going does get tough, don’t just put your head in the sand. There are many organisations like Holiwell that have affordable services that can help.”

Holiwell offers a free business health check called Talk free – Stress free. Visit holiwell.net.au for more information. You can also access the council’s B-Well and Prosper program at bwell.mindstar.com.au.

MY OPINION

GOT A DOLLAR?

THE WHOLE TRUTH

Sami Muirhead says if we all gave $1 when we passed charity representatives holding donation tins, it would make a big difference.

Kyle Kimball questions the old adage, ‘honesty is the best policy’, when truth can be a matter of context and perception.

N

ick Molnar’s mum must be so proud of him. The young gun is the mastermind behind the tearaway success of the buy-now-pay-later Afterpay and has just been named on Australia’s Young Rich List. The Australian Financial Review publishes the list of seriously cashed-up Aussies under 40 every year to make the rest of us feel like total losers. The cool thing about the list is you need to be self-made. As a mum, I read that list and instead of being fired up by determination to go out and make millions I think, geez, their mums must be proud. You know you are getting older when this happens. I met a local mum the other day who has one son who owns a coffee franchise and another son who owns a brewery. She is surely bragging big time at her weekly water aerobics class. I am proud of my kids if they remember to make a bed or eat their peas. But back to Nick the superstar behind Afterpay, which is one of the country’s fastest growing companies. It offers a ‘buy now, take now, pay later’ service that does not require customers to enter a traditional loan or pay any upfront fees or interest to Afterpay. I grew up in a lay-by family. We would chip away at most of our family birthday or Christmas gifts. When I hit my late teens, I always had an active lay-by at Sportsgirl. I still love a lay-by. It gives me something to dream about and otherwise I would fritter away my spending budget on rubbish.

And since we are talking money this week, I wanted to share some great advice I heard from fashion designer Alex Perry. You know, the cool Sydney guy who wears his sunglasses on his head? It turns out he is one of the best public speakers I have ever heard and he is a huge supporter of charities. He has dressed Jennifer Lopez and is friends with Megan Gale and Jennifer Hawkins, but he has his feet firmly on the ground. Alex reminded us all to ‘give a dollar’ when he spoke to a bunch of locals. Instead of walking by the Guide Dogs statue where you can slot a coin in the head, stop and give $1. Instead of shuffling by the volunteers rattling tins at a shopping centre, walk up to them and with a smile give them $1. It is a win-win situation for everyone. I spent some time with the Compass Institute team at Sunshine Plaza this week. They were shaking tins to help fund therapy dogs for kids. This ‘give $1’ advice is much needed in our society. If we all gave $1, wouldn’t it add up? And what are we going to do with that change anyway? Nothing. I know we have less cash on us than ever before, but it’s a powerful thought that your $1 really can make a difference. Instead, we hide behind mobile phones and keep on walking when the right thing to do is spare just $1 and look those volunteers in the eyes and feel proud of yourself. Nick is worth a cool $350 million, for the record. His mum has every right to be beaming with pride.

Sami Muirhead is a radio announcer, blogger and commentator. For more from Sami you can hear her on Mix FM.

T

his weekend just passed I was lucky enough to be a panellist in a public debate. The subject of this hard-fought, but nonetheless civilised, public fracas was ‘honesty is the best policy’. It is a cliche attributed to one of the founding fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin. Now Ben, while undoubtedly very accomplished, was plainly no lawyer. Much the same as with modern public discourse, in the 18th century, everything had to be either black or white. There was right, and there was wrong. If one is not honest, one must therefore be dishonest. With such a predisposition to opposites, it is no wonder Franklin discovered the lightning rod and bifocals. The statement itself seems so obvious as to be beyond reproach. We live in a society where, from an early age, failing to tell the truth in almost any context leads to punishment of one form or another. Lying is, in most cases, a very anti-social thing to do. This is perhaps not surprising given words are the overwhelming means of communication between people. The reliance people place on the words of others touches every aspect of our lives in myriad ways. But there is a large difference between telling a lie and remaining silent. A fundamental right in our legal system (rapidly being eroded by our parliaments

on many levels) is the right to silence. This stems from two primary principals. The first, that the onus to prove an allegation lies on the party making the allegation. Given all the power, guns and money lies in the hand of our government, remaining silent in the face of accusation is a sacrosanct principle that protects the rest of us from the abuses those in power have historically been so ready to commit. The second is that the talker is presumed

“But there is a large difference between telling a lie and remaining silent” to only ever likely to be saying things in their own self-interest; you can take what anyone says with a grain of salt. In our debate, there were numerous practical examples thrown about which greatly illustrated instances of how honesty is definitely not the best policy. In every instance, however, the truth was always relative and entirely a matter of context. So remember, next time you’re arguing the point, whether something is black or white depends entirely upon the angle of the light.

ee Kernaghan is an Australian country music legend and one of the most recognisable names in the music industry, but who knew he got his start on the Sunshine Coast? Speaking with My Weekly Preview during his epic Backroad Nation tour, the musician dropped this surprising statement. “My professional career pretty well started on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “I was on tour with my dad and I would have been about 17 years old. His tour finished and we were staying at a caravan park in Nambour. It dawned on me I had to go out and get a job, so I started knocking on doors around Mooloolaba and Caloundra, playing in restaurants and pubs.” The only way was up from there, with Mr Kernaghan going on to win four ARIA awards, sell more than two million albums and have 33 number one hits on the Australian country music charts. But it’s a career he pretty much fell into. “I wasn’t good at anything else, so it had to be music,” he says. “I won the Star Maker Award at Tamworth when I was 17, but it wasn’t until I was 27 that I got to make my first album, The Outback Club. That was the one that won the ARIA. “Country was in my DNA,” he says. “My mum’s parents were dairy farmers up in the high country. Dad came from a long line of drovers. You combine that with hearing Slim

PROFILE Dusty live at Wagga Wagga on constant repeat at our place when I was about four, and I wasn’t going to go any other way. Mr Kernaghan has seen the country music industry in Australia evolve a lot since he first started out, but he’s retained his fan base during that time. “The age demographic of people who come to my shows is everything from three to 93 and maybe older,” he says. “What I’ve seen is young kids who were coming along to my shows out at college somewhere, they’ve gone on to have kids of their own and now I’m seeing second- and third-generation fans coming through.” Mr Kernaghan’s love of the country, the lifestyle that goes along with it and his passion for country music has always been strong in his music and is what makes him appealing to a broad fan base, which has become even broader since country music has become increasingly more mainstream. “Country music is just sounding so good now,” he says. “It has really come on strong and people are really connecting with it. I do a radio show on Triple M every week and it goes out to 80 stations on a network not really known to play country music and people are loving it. “The music just keeps evolving and I reckon it’s just getting better and better. It’s the most exciting time in country music. People are getting into it with sold-out events

Lee Kernaghan with wife Robyn McKelvie

“Country music is just sounding so good now… people are really connecting with it”

like CMC Rocks, the Deni Ute Muster and the Gympie Muster. They’re all iconic events. “The success of artists like Keith Urban and then with Bebe Rexha’s country crossover hit and Billy Ray Cyrus’ smash hit teaming up with Lil Nas X – country is really breaking through into mainstream media, as it has been doing in America for years. There are more country music stations in America

than any other format. It’s massive there.” While the US is the hub of country music, Mr Kernaghan has stayed true to his Aussie roots, earning him 37 Golden Guitars at the Tamworth music festival for music that is about Australia, for Australians. “My kinda country is homegrown,” he says. “It’s about us. Our way of life. For me, that’s what makes it real, what makes it authentic. That’s why I’m so passionate about what I do.” His much-anticipated 15th studio album, Backroad Nation, was written with a specific purpose in mind. “There have been some hard times out there on the land and there still is in many parts, with the drought. I wanted to bring out a collection of songs that would make people feel good, that would give them a lift. That was the philosophy behind this album. People are getting the good vibrations all around the country right now. “Every time I get out on stage it feels like home to me. The people who come along are like my family.”

Lee Kernaghan’s Backroad Nation Tour comes to The Events Centre, Caloundra on Thursday November 28, supported by The Wolfe Brothers and CMC’s Female Artist of the Year, Christie Lamb. For more information visit theeventscentre.com.au.

RIGHT AT HOME: Design and decor with British flair

We’re feeling very inspired by this room, which features the Graham & Brown Bloomsbury Neo-Mint wallpaper, a lush country garden floral print on a pale green background. The complementary paints are called Popsicle (the pink) and Stirling Green.

ritain’s political climate may be gloomy, but on the decor front the sun is shining. Young designers and established firms are crafting furniture, lighting and accessories that celebrate vintage patterns and offer a new take on British history. There are porter’s chairs, for instance, from the rebel luxury brand Jimmie Martin. While the classic chairs’ interiors are upholstered in luxe velvets and leathers, the cowl-like hooded backs are covered in graffiti. There are lighting fixtures from Lee Broom, who began his career as a teenage protege of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood. The Carousel pendant’s ring of gunmetal or brass cylinders is tipped with opal glass diffusers. Broom’s inspiration? “The nostalgic merry-go-rounds of a traditional British fairground.” Glasgow design house Timorous Beasties is known for avant-garde takes on traditional patterns for wallcoverings and fabrics. There’s Bloomsbury Garden, a lush flora and fauna pattern that celebrates the fashionable and famous London neighbourhood. Get it in wallpaper, fabric or cushion form. Here too is the Thistle

pattern, with the Scottish flower’s tufts and spikes placed against saturated hues like crimson, aubergine and earth. Legacy wallpaper firm Graham & Brown was also inspired by Bloomsbury when creating its paper of the year. In this case, it was the Bloomsbury set, a group of early 20th century artists, writers and thinkers who pushed against the constraints of Victorian and Edwardian society. Bloomsbury Neo-Mint is a lush, countrygarden floral print on a pale green background.

Mosaic maker New Ravenna has launched the Bright Young Things collection, inspired by the glamorous, jazzy exuberance of London’s social scene in the 1920s. Patterns evocative of Art Deco and the bohemian spirit of the era are translated into tumbled, polished stone trimmed with brushed metallics. Even teacups have been given a refresh. Royal Worcester, one of England’s oldest porcelain makers, has Hannah Dale’s whimsical Wrendale Designs collection, inspired by the artist’s Stoke-on-Trent studio home. Woodland animal watercolour drawings are printed on fine bone china. Royal Doulton references the year John Doulton started the London pottery company with the new 1815 collection of handcrafted porcelain tableware, trimmed with vibrant hues and stamped with the date. Designer Timothy Oulton is known for updating iconic pieces like chesterfield sofas and lounge chairs by playing with scale or adding dramatic upholstery. Side tables reference old leather school trunks, British aircraft or regimental drums. It’s all done with reverence for the original pieces. – AAP

everything – and my Pushkar home definitely echoes the bright colour palette that India is renowned for. “In the kitchen I created a wall with second hand Jaipur blue pottery tiles that I had collected over three years. There is even a kangaroo tile! “In the living room, I’ve made sofas out of traditional Indian beds called charpai that are basically a wooden frame and woven rope. I put mattresses on top and decorated them with Indian block-printed covers and cushions. Super comfy! “I set out to build a very open house as I have a lot of animals – the Indian star tortoise have free range of the house, as do the dogs, cats and sometimes monkeys.”

Find ways to inspire others and shine more brightly on the job as the full moon illuminates your career zone. It’s also time to spruce up (or redecorate) your workspace or home office, so it increases your creativity and boosts your productivity.

This week, courtesy of Mercury, you could encounter problems with a stressed relative or neighbour as you misunderstand each other’s motives. You need to backtrack and articulate your true intentions in a careful and compassionate way.

Stylish Librans love to dress up and are the fashionistas of the zodiac, but don’t just focus on your outer appearance. The full moon and retrograde Mercury push you to nurture your self-esteem and appreciate your inner beauty as well.

Expect some ups and downs this week. There is a powerful sun/Pluto connection mid-week that could lead to positive changes. (Yeah!) But Mercury is still reversing through your sign until next week, which will cause some chaos and confusion. (Boo!)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

You’re keen to be in charge as the full moon lights up your job zone. But are you being the boss – or just plain bossy? Strive to utilise your leadership skills in clever and creative ways that bring more stability to your work situation.

Are you satisfied with your current trajectory? This week, Mercury is reversing through your hopes and wishes zone, plus the sun forms a fabulous aspect with Pluto (in your sign), so it’s a suitable time to transform an important part of your life.

Is a professional problem bugging you? A combination of research and hard work will lead to a smart solution that ticks all the boxes. Looking for employment? Retrograde Mercury challenges you to re-think your strategy and devise a practical plan.

Are your aspirations ambitious enough? There’s no room for false modesty or procrastination this week! The full moon stimulates your thought processes and encourages you to come up with a plan and then stick to it, with patience and perseverance.

WE’RE NUMBER ONE! Hotspotting has named the Sunshine Coast the best place in Australia to invest. Words: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Our incredible coastline isn’t the only drawcard for investors

T

he founder of Hotspotting.com.au has described the Sunshine Coast as having “Australia’s most compelling growth story” when it comes to property. Terry Ryder, who lives in Maleny, says the Sunshine Coast has appeared on “places to avoid, no-go zone” lists in the past and he was ecstatic to see the region has come into its own on so many levels. So much so, that the region has taken out the number one spot in his top 10 best investment opportunities for the medium to long term. Mr Ryder says a sea of high-vis jackets doesn’t just mean improved liveability for local residents, it also means more jobs, stronger economic growth, and booming populations. When you combine this with affordable prices, you have a winner and this is why the Sunshine Coast topped his latest list. Given Mr Ryder’s focus on jobs and infrastructure, it’s perhaps unsurprising he sees the Sunshine Coast as the country’s “strongest property market”. Having recently taken an in-depth look at the state of the region while compiling a major report for SunCentral, Mr Ryder says the Sunshine Coast has “quite a remarkable story that has inevitably positive outcomes for real estate”. “The Coast has gone from being arguably a tourist town to being recognised by the Global Intelligent Community Forum

44 My Weekly Preview | November 8, 2019

as an international city of renown in the space of about three years. Of course, there were many events happening behind the scenes for a long time to bring that to fruition, but this image has only just been projected outwardly in the past two to three years,” he says. “The new hospital precinct, the CBD, which is a unique event in itself as there is no other place where a greenfield site has allowed the creation of a new CBD from the ground up, and the airport expansion, future international broadband subsea cable and billions of dollars in highway upgrade projects has seen more than $20 billion of investment when you add it all up. That is not only remarkably high, but it means our infrastructure spending is way ahead of the capital cities of Hobart, Canberra and Darwin.” Mr Ryder says economic diversity is drawing in more people looking for work and there have been great advances in median property prices, with many records being set on top-end properties and prices “unlike anything we have seen before” being achieved. “A tourism economy is very fickle and fragile. Now to see the economy diversifying towards a sustainable model will mean we can expect sustainable growth in property prices. There is nowhere else in the country that these tremendous changes are happening,” he says. “The region has always been quite linear,

which lent itself to a tourism economy, but the infrastructure spending has attracted the attention of the nation. More businesses are moving here and renowned demographer Bernard Salt has called the Sunshine Coast the entrepreneurship capital of Australia, which is another acknowledgement of what the Coast has become.” Mr Ryder says while property prices in the region may continue to rise, it will be in a sustainable manner. “I don’t think we’re ever going to touch the heights of Sydney and Melbourne, they’ve got a big head start and we’re unlikely to catch them in my lifetime, but there is good future growth and a variety of price ranges here that will keep the property market flourishing,” he says.

THE TEAM BEHIND HIA AWARD-WINNING TANGALOOMA IS BACK WITH BOTANICA

A

landmark development on the Mooloolah River in Mooloolaba has won the HIA Apartment Complex of the Year and Apartment of the Year at the 2019 awards. Tangalooma Residences features four full-floor apartments with an average size of 500 square metres. It includes individual marina berths for each apartment and set new benchmarks for apartment prices on the Sunshine Coast when it was completed in late 2018. While the Noosa apartment market has always led the Sunshine Coast in terms of price, Tangalooma’s sales of $5.85 million for the level-four apartment and $5.6 million for the level-three apartment were evidence that buyers were willing to pay for the exclusivity of a boutique development in a premium waterfront location. Each apartment in Tangalooma features its own lift and fully customised floor plan. Tangalooma was developed by local builder Laz Dzufer, who, with his partner Grant Kennedy, is now undertaking another premium apartment project in an absolute waterfront location, this time on the Maroochy River in Maroochydore. Located

only five minutes from Maroochydore City Centre, the project, called Botanica Riverside, features only 16 apartments over eight levels. Each residence is 310 square metres in size, with prices starting at $2.4 million. The apartments will feature a full suite of Miele appliances, two separate and distinct living areas, three ensuited bedrooms, gourmet kitchens with walk-in pantries and integrated outdoor barbecue area,

“It was clear there was a demand from buyers who wanted an exclusive, large apartment in a premium location”

app-activated technology to control key electrical systems and generous storage, including a utility room. All bathrooms and laundries have natural ventilation and light, a feature rarely experienced in apartment living. A secure double-car garage with storage in the basement for each residence further complements the unique offering provided by Botanica. A recreation pavilion for the exclusive use of residents features a gymnasium, dining room and 20-metre pool with day beds to allow residents to relax in style. Botanica has been well received by the local market with more than 50 per cent of the development now sold, and with construction now underway, it is expected to be completed by late 2020. “With the development of Tangalooma, it was clear there was a demand from buyers who wanted an exclusive, large apartment in a premium location, and the success of Botanica is further proof that this market continues to grow,” says Mr Dzufer. “Our intention with Botanica is to create another landmark project like Tangalooma and we believe that demand for this type of product will remain strong.”

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So Greg Norman reckons a good golf shot is like having an orgasm…umm. So 72 orgasms a round. I would be lucky to have one a year with my golf! That said, based on this theory I would suggest scoring an epic ride on your board is most definitely the same, however not sure anyone is having that much fun of late with the terrible conditions. The forecast does not look good for climactic conditions this weekend. So much I could say but best I don’t. Later peeps.
