Moderna questions

answered The Moderna vaccine is now available for six- to 11-year-olds in Australia.

Here’s what parents need to know.

A

ustralian children aged six to 11 years are now able to get the Moderna COVID vaccine at pharmacies, GP clinics and vaccination hubs.

This follows the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s provisional approval and the ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation) recommendation for the Moderna vaccine, called Spikevax, to be made available to this age group.

Australia is one of the first countries to approve the use of the Moderna vaccine for children under 12 years old.

What is the Moderna COVID vaccine?

Does it work, and is it safe?

Until now, the Pfizer vaccine was the only option available for five- to 11-yearolds. Moderna eligibility starts at six, so the Pfizer vaccine is still the only COVID vaccine option for kids aged five. No COVID vaccines are currently available for under-fives and with trials still under way, they’re likely to be some months away.

What’s the dose and interval?

The Moderna vaccine is given at a lower dosage of 0.25ml (50 micrograms) for

children under 12 years old. (Adults are given 0.5ml for their first and second doses, and 0.25ml for a booster.) Two doses are recommended for five- to 11-year-olds, with an eight-week interval. This can be shortened to four weeks for children at risk of severe COVID and in special circumstances such as travelling overseas.

Most children who have the Moderna vaccine will have their doses eight weeks apart.

How effective is it?

The Moderna vaccine was tested in a clinical trial called KidCOVE. This trial involved 4753 children aged six to 11 years and was designed to look at safety and immune responses.

The trial results have not been formally published and appear only in a press release. However, a full clinical dossier will have been submitted to the TGA for its consideration in granting a provisional approval.

The KidCOVE trial found children developed an equivalent level of antibodies to that seen in young adults aged 18 to 25 years. Nearly all participants made

antibodies (99.3 per cent) after vaccination.

These results (as detailed in the press release) demonstrate a strong immune response in this group of children one month after the second dose.

Is it safe?

The KidCOVE trial monitored safety.

The Spikevax Moderna vaccine was generally well tolerated, with side-effects consistent with those in adolescents and adults. The most common adverse events were fatigue, headache, fever and injection site pain.

Children in the KidCOVE trial will be followed for 12 months after their second injection to assess long-term protection and safety.

Should my child get Pfizer or Moderna?

There is no direct head-to-head comparison available to tell us which vaccine is more effective in the real-world setting in children age six to 11 years. Both vaccines were shown to be efficacious, but the overall number of cases available for evaluation in both trials was small.

Side-effects reported after the Moderna

vaccine were mild to moderate and quickly resolved, as did those reported in the Pfizer trial of five- to 11-year-olds.

But while there is no direct comparison of side-effects in a single trial, the available evidence suggests mild to moderate side-effects are more commonly reported after Moderna. This includes pain at the injection site, swelling and tenderness of lymph nodes in the armpit, fever, headache and nausea. This may be due to the difference in the amount of antigen content (the substance that produces the immune response) between vaccines.

Pfizer contains 10 micrograms, while Moderna contains 50 micrograms.

What about rare complications?

Moderna didn’t report any cases of myocarditis or pericarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle or tissue surrounding the heart) in its clinical trial of 4700 children. But the sample size of the trial was not large enough to rule out any risk.

Australia’s vaccine monitoring body, AusVaxSafety, has closely monitored the safety of the Pfizer vaccine in children aged five to 11 years. It found side-effects have generally been mild, with pain, swelling and redness at the vaccination site the most common.

AusVaxSafety and our other surveillance systems will also monitor Moderna vaccine safety in children as it’s rolled out in the coming months, and will closely watch for serious adverse events.

Just under half of Australian primary school-age children have received their first COVID vaccine dose, after becoming eligible on January 10. Parents of children now have another vaccine to consider as we look to protect our community from COVID. Hopefully adding another vaccine choice helps to boost these rates.

It’s time to end the cycle of violence March 8 is International Women’s Day and this year’s theme is #breakthebias. While women face gender inequality in all areas of life, feeling safe in their own homes remains the most urgent problem facing Australian women today.

anelle Parsons was hiding in her shower, too scared to breathe. A man had scaled her fence and was outside her window, trying to get in. She knew if he broke in, he’d kill her. Because it wasn’t just any man, it was her ex-boyfriend – and he’d already breached his domestic violence order 70 times.

He’d driven past her hair salon in Coolum and run his finger across his throat. He’d choked her, hit her, slammed her head in the freezer door and threatened her life. Finding the courage to leave him, she had moved to a house with a high fence to protect her and her two children.

“When I called the police, the operator asked all the usual questions,” she writes in House of Shadows, a heartbreakingly raw account of generational abuse and domestic violence. “Am I in danger? Is someone attacking me? Are they in the house? I explained that he was outside my window and not threatening me at the present time, but I was fearful for my life. The operator’s response was, ‘If he’s not threatening to hurt you and is not physically a threat at the present time, we will put a call out to patrol, but it’s not a high priority job.’ I felt completely dismissed in that moment. I feared for

my life and was told I was not a priority.”

Sirens echoed in the distance, chasing him away. But they weren’t coming to rescue her. In fact, the police never arrived that night. Instead, she received a call from police at 4am, asking if the disturbance was still occurring.

“I felt so betrayed and abandoned and when I told the officer what happened, he looked up my file and fell silent,” she says.

“He realised my case was much more serious than what the operator had reported and a few hours later, I was called into the police station. When I arrived, they apologised for their delay in responding.

They told me how understaffed they were that evening and that there were major crimes to attend to.”

Thankfully, Ms Parsons survived her ordeal with the violent partner she was with for four years. But the ‘major crimes’ police were attending to when she most needed help could well have been her own murder.

According to Our Watch, an initiative under the National Plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children 2010-2022 (the National Plan), one woman on average a week is murdered by her current or former partner; violence against women is a serious and widespread problem in Australia, with women nearly three times more likely than men to experience violence from an intimate partner; and almost 10 women a day are hospitalised for assault injuries perpetrated by a spouse or domestic partner.

According to the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare, intimate partner violence causes more illness, disability and deaths than any other risk factor for women aged 25 to 44.

On August 9, 2019, the Council of Australian Governments endorsed the Fourth Action Plan of the National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children 2010–2022, agreeing on five national priorities to reduce family, domestic and sexual violence.

The Federal government announced a $328 million package as part of the government’s contribution to the Fourth Action Plan. This included additional funding for the 1800 RESPECT helpline, emergency accommodation, training for myweeklypreview.com.au

health workers responding to domestic violence victims and consistent national standards for sexual assault response services. It was an increase from $100 million for the Third Action Plan in 2016 and $100 million for the Women’s Safety Package in 2015. These action plans have been a step in the right direction. But women are still dying every week, usually at the hands of their partners.

According to Dr Dyann Ross, a senior lecturer in social work at the University of the Sunshine Coast, domestic violence is an extremely complex issue that needs to be addressed culturally, systemically and with individual perpetrators. And, as Ms Parsons discovered, we can’t always rely on police.

“We know there’s a gender bias in domestic violence that is predominantly against women and children,” Dr Ross says.

“It’s not improving, even with us becoming more aware as a society. The bias is still against women; we are not regarded as equal human beings.

“As a society, we are all responsible.

There are some government ads that are pretty good at saying women should speak up, but it shouldn’t only be the woman who is being aggressed against who has to speak up. Neighbours, family members, colleagues – we all have a role to play, not only police. Police have done an incredible job as a profession in the last decade to understand domestic violence and get better at responding, but it’s only as good as the culture within their workplace.”

This is something Ms Parsons is all too aware of. Having found the courage to speak up and ask for help, she was dismissed by some police officers.

“If there is a domestic violence order [DVO] put in place, it’s for a very good reason,” Ms Parsons says. “I had one police officer actually say to me, ‘Women like you are what clogs up our system; you want to cry wolf.’ I said, ‘Excuse me, I’m not crying wolf. I’m here in the police station with 70 breaches.’ They’d say, ‘Don’t call us every time. Collect a few pieces of evidence, put it on a USB and then bring it in to us so we have more

substantial evidence to go to court with.’”

Another officer apologised to Ms Parsons for his colleague’s attitude, but it’s not uncommon. The problem is so pervasive, police often can’t keep up and Dr Ross acknowledges police are “highly frustrated by perpetrators who breach domestic violence orders”.

“My point is, it’s a societal problem,” she says. “There’s probably a home in our

street where domestic violence is happening. We probably know about it – what are we doing? We’ve got this idea that it’s inevitable. But we can absolutely do something about it. The abuser needs to take responsibility and get help – there are some great groups around for men who have been perpetrators. And let’s not say it’s the women’s fault because they stay there.

“I think men have to talk to other men and buddy up with them and say it’s not okay, what you’re doing, can I help you stop this? It won’t matter what services are available and whether the police are doing enough unless all of us step up and recognise we all have to do something.”

Ms Parsons now lives on acreage near Noosa and runs her successful Coolum hair

salon, Meek HD. She’s in a healthy, happy relationship, is raising her two children and has tried to put her violent past behind her.

It’s a past that stretches back to childhood, when she was mercilessly beaten by her father for many years. She describes how she healed from her generational and domestic abuse in House of Shadows.

She is now developing an education program for high school students to teach them about generational abuse and trauma, which she believes is the root cause of domestic violence.

“I really want to target 16- to 18-yearolds,” she says. “They are developing into the adult they will become and that’s when you’re really starting to see perpetrator and victim patterns.”

She doesn’t, however, see placing blame on the perpetrators as the sole solution.

“I do believe the aggressors are hurting on such a deep level and have been crying out for help for such a long time,” she says.

“They’re trapped in a dark room and can’t find the key or the handle to get out.

“I have a very objective mindset in that I can see both sides. There’s nobody else out there telling the story I am, without putting blame and shame on either side. It’s about the higher and greater good for all and creating a better human existence.

“I don’t condone violence and I don’t want people to misunderstand me. What I want to do in the work I create is to show that each side is acting out of fear; both the perpetrator and the victim are stuck in fight or flight. My book is a tell-all story to show that pain does not equal love; that you can find the power within yourself to make a change and live a healthier life.”

Caloundra: the nation’s silver gem It probably comes as no surprise to southern locals, but Caloundra is the country’s second favourite town. Now thanks to Wotif.com, the rest of Australia is realising it too. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

ur very own Caloundra has taken out a silver medal in the annual Wotif.com Aussie Town of the Year Awards.

It was named as a “hidden gem” thanks to its pristine beaches and location a stone’s throw from the spectacular Glass House Mountains.

The awards recognise the country’s top destinations for 2022. Caloundra came in after Launceston in Tasmania, with Tamworth in New South Wales rounding out the top three Aussie towns. Hervey Bay was the only other Queensland town to make the list, coming in at number seven.

TRAVEL PREDICTIONS IN 2022

The awards are determined by Wotif data index that looks at accommodation affordability, quality and traveller satisfaction. It aims to highlight the best of Australia’s diverse destinations to encourage Aussies to explore their own backyard.

The data reveals travel interest for Caloundra increasing by close to 50 per cent on Wotif.com in the past 12 months. A contributing factor to its top two placing is the town’s affordability, with an average accommodation rate of $228 per night.

Wotif managing director Daniel Finch says 2022 is set to be a pivotal year for domestic tourism and it is wonderful for Caloundra be recognised on the list.

“We’re thrilled to see Caloundra come in at second place in the Aussie Town of the Year Award,” Mr Finch says. “Pristine beaches, wonderful accommodation on offer and wow, what a little hidden gem it is on the Sunshine Coast.”

Head of industry, trade and development at Visit Sunshine Coast, Andrew Fairbairn, says this recognition is a big win, especially after the Sunshine Coast was voted the world’s number one most loved tourist destination the 2021 Tourism Sentiment Index.

“This is awesome news for the Caloundra tourism industry,” he says.

“We really are passionate about tourism and all the visitors that come here.

“Recently the Sunshine Coast was named the most desirable destination in the world, so having Caloundra recognised as the top town is awesome news.”

Wotif data also revealed Australia’s travel plans for 2022.

Research commissioned by Wotif indicates 88 per cent of Aussies planning to travel this year are looking to explore more of Australia, with two in five (40 per cent) saying they plan to visit Queensland in 2022.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever and Emma Donovan & The Putbacks are among the artists set to take the stage at the festival, which promises to be ‘a little offbeat, a bit quirky, a little off the beaten track, and a bit of the unexpected.”

“After all we’ve been through lately, in fact, because of all we have been through lately, we are even more excited to be bringing this dream line-up to Eumundi for Offbeat 2022,” festival organiser Alice Jones says.

A Wurtulla mum is ready to say goodbye to renting and hello to a new family home after scoring division one in the Saturday Gold Lotto draw on February 19.

The Sunshine Coast woman held one of the nine division one winning entries in draw 4235, with each winner scoring a division one prize of $633,095.20.

“It’s going to make a huge difference.

It’s so fabulous,” she says. “That prize is a house. We’re renting and we’ve been wanting to get a house for the family. This means we now can. I’ve been playing these same numbers for years, but they’ve never won anything like this.”

Her winning entry was purchased at Wurtulla News and Tobacconist. Owner Honey Patel says the win is the first division one winning entry her outlet has sold since she took ownership in June last year. “We wish our winner all the best with her winnings,” she says.

Hey Sunshine Coast, you gotta be cool to be kind A new campaign has been launched on the Sunshine Coast encouraging everyone to be kind and support local businesses and industry.

W

e all know a kind word or action can change your day for the better, boosting happiness and, in turn, inspiring you to do good deeds for others.

That’s why local businesses, Council and Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service have joined forces, launching a new campaign promoting kindness.

Workers across many sectors including hospitality, retail, transport, medical and administration are experiencing an increase in customer abuse. And it’s not cool.

The campaign, It’s Cool to be Kind, is designed to support local businesses and industry doing it tough in the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the help of local business staff from across the region, Council has created a range of free Kind is Cool unbranded campaign material, such as videos, posters and social media graphics, for businesses and services to download and display at their premises and share on social media.

Times have been tough, however, the many workers who are being subjected to unkind behaviour are also the people who have been providing the community with much-needed goods and services since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

Throughout the pandemic, local businesses have been directly impacted by constant change and uncertainty, some supply disruption due to peak demands

and, more recently, an abnormal level of staff absenteeism due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

Despite the challenges, local businesses are continuing to work hard to support the community as much as possible and are focused on keeping everyone safe and well.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone, and things can get a little frustrating, but it’s now time to work together, support one another and move forward.

WHEELS IN MOTION FOR INCLUSIVE PILOT PROJECT

A pilot project focused on inclusivity and mobility will change the way our community travels across some popular areas of the Sunshine Coast. Using mapping technology, wheelchairs have been turned into mapping tools with trained local ‘pilots’ and devices installed to track routes from Maroochydore to Mooloolaba. The innovative technology collects information about our footpath conditions, access to parking, amenities, boardwalks, beach accesses and more. The data is being collated to create the mobility maps which are expected to be published on Council’s website late April.

OLD AMBO TAKEOVERS Local creatives will take over the Old Ambulance Station in Nambour as part of a pilot program to support Sunshine Coast artists.

The Old Ambo received 27 applications from an expression of interest call-out in November 2021 to take over its Black Box Theatre and Gallery space.

Successful creatives receive rent-free space, $2000 and in-house production or technical support.

I launched this year’s program recently and applications are now open to our region’s Year 9 to Year 12 students.

These awards support high school students to develop business ideas that use innovation or technology in a new way to solve a community, environmental or business challenge. I am proud that Sunshine Coast Council continues to support these types of initiatives that foster talent, innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship in our future leaders.

Students who participate in the program could share in more than $10,000 in prizes, have access to professional industry mentors and gain real-life experience in developing their ideas into marketable products.

• You must be clear of any COVID-19 symptoms for seven days to donate.

• The day before, drink plenty of fluids – 10 glasses of water for men or eight glasses for women.

• On the day drink 750 millilitres, or around three large glasses, of fluids, have something savoury to eat and avoid strenuous exercise. Make sure you bring your ID to your booking.

• Donating blood will take only one hour of your time, and every blood donation can help to save three lives.

hree generations of one Sunshine Coast family have made the record books after rolling up their sleeves to save lives.

Grandmother Jennette McCosker went above and beyond to do her part in donating blood, by rounding up her son and grandson to join.

Approximately 850 donations are needed each week on the Sunshine Coast and donating blood will take only one hour.

Every blood donation can help to save three lives. Red Cross Lifeblood is calling on more residents to consider donating blood, especially after a decline in numbers since the peak of the Omicron wave.

Mrs McCosker has made 67 blood donations since first seeing a mobile blood centre at Caloundra 13 years ago. Since then, the 71-year-old has donated blood and plasma.

“I had seen the big red donation van at Bunnings one day and decided to go in and offer to donate,” she says. “That’s when it started, and I read on the vehicle that one in three people will need blood but only one in 30 take the time to donate.

“You get a very special feeling because of what you have done. Often I get an email telling me to which hospital my blood or plasma has gone and how many lives it has saved on the day.”

Her son Shane and 26-year-old grandson Matthew are also regular donors and Mrs McCosker thought it would be a special family affair to all donate at the same time at Maroochydore. “It took a bit of rearranging by the staff to get us all together in the centre and I was told that it was very rare to have three generations together doing lifesaving donations.”

So rare, in fact, Mrs McCosker contacted The Australian Book of Records to see if it had been done before. Receiving confirmation it was a first, the family officially set a new record for three generations of one family giving blood at the same time, in the same place.

She hopes this will inspire others to do the same.

Red Cross has donor centres at Maroochydore and Nambour, plus a mobile centre that travels across the region.

Walk-ins are welcome, however, donors are encouraged to book an appointment by calling 13 14 95 or visiting lifeblood.com.au.

GRANT FOR EMERGENCIES The Sunshine Coast will received a $561,000 federal government grant to manage emergencies. Sunshine Coast Council will receive the funding to support the delivery of an emergency management and evacuation call system at Nambour Showgrounds, which is used as a major evacuation centre during emergencies. Federal Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien says the funding will support the Sunshine Coast’s recovery from the Black Summer bushfires and ensure the region is “disaster ready”.

$1 MILLION FOR SCHOOLS Sunshine Coast students are set to receive a kick-start in becoming future environmental champions, with schools in the region given the chance to share in $1 million through the 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants.

Woolworths will offer Sunshine Coast schools and early learning centres up to $1000 each to develop projects that focus on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices or enhancing native habitats.

MALENY MEN’S SHED TO BUILD SECOND FACILITY

TALENTED CALOUNDRA TEEN TO STUDY MUSIC AT USC A Caloundra teenager with a love of music is hitting all the right notes as she plans to dive into a degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Ella Mathison, who graduated from Meridan State College last year, will begin a Bachelor of Music degree at the University of the Sunshine Coast this semester.

“My obsession with music began at high school, thanks to music teachers who always went above and beyond to help me achieve my grades, awards for music and the arts, plus real-life gigging opportunities. And I loved the annual battle of the bands,” she says.

“I have been gigging for four years now as a soloist at cafes and restaurants and I’m finalising one of my original songs to release this year.”

The 18-year-old, who competed in last year’s Have You Got ‘The Voice’ singing competition at NightQuarter, says her goal is to have her original music heard by people across the globe.

“While songwriting is my passion and will most likely be my favourite class in this degree, I am incredibly excited for the business and marketing courses, which I’m hoping will set me up with the

Demand for Men’s Sheds is growing with many local clubs now expanding.

Maleny and District Men’s Shed secretary Lindsay Hay says a rising number of retirees in the region has increased demand for the important benefits the Men’s Shed movement provides.

“These benefits include opportunities to learn new skills or mentor expertise, build a social network and pass time meaningfully in the company of mates,” Mr Hay says. “But more importantly, Men’s Sheds provide a collegiate network of support, advice and fellowship for men of all ages around their mental and physical health, aspects of wellbeing that men are sometimes reluctant to address.”

The Maleny and District Men’s Shed, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in

2021, has more than 50 members and will soon commence construction of a second facility and an extension to the cark park to include disabled parking.

The Australian Defence Force has donated a shed, previously used in Vietnam, to be repurposed for the new space. “This new resource will allow the expansion of the Men’s Shed services into alternative clean activities such as leatherwork, lead lighting, cards, computers etc, as well as a breakout space for meals and information sessions,” Mr Hay says. “These cannot be practically conducted in the current shed, which is dedicated to wood and metal work.

Moreover, the existing shed has reached effective capacity.”

Last month Sunshine Coast police visited Kenilworth, which is visited by hundreds of motorcyclists each weekend and is considered the U-turn point of the popular Maleny to Kenilworth ride. “It was great to see most riders with full leathers, gloves, helmets, back protection and boots that overlapped their pants to prevent exposing the skin in an accident,” Senior Constable

Rebecca McMeniman says. Police spoke with riders and the local community regarding some recent occurrences in the area. A common concern was inexperienced riders who are new to the area and making the decision to ride down Obi Obi Road not knowing that the road is gravel.

Police are urging riders to research the roads and drive to the road conditions.

The power of awards Last month we hit another major milestone in the recovery of the tourism industry, with Australia reopening international borders to eligible travellers. It’s a huge step towards seeing our international visitors back in the region, who are critical given they spend more and stay longer. MOVE OVER NOOSA

In the urban jungle, a new footpath predator has emerged: the e-scooter. It’s time, writes Jane Stephens, for rideable rules to be rewritten.

I

have an uneasy relationship with those travelling bipedal style. With the space becoming crowded, maybe it is time to review that.

The bell issue causes ructions too. Bikes must have one, but scooters needn’t. Even when they are used, some pedestrians get alarmed or grumpy at being alerted.

The laws are complicated. For example, in Queensland you don’t have to wear a helmet when using a human-powered wheeled recreational device, but a helmet is required if a foot scooter has an electric motor. Oh, or if you are riding a humanpowered bike. Go figure.

The focus needs to be on safety for the rider and others on footpaths, so small additions such as compulsory helmets and bells would seem logical, but would that mean oldies on mobility scooters need to risk helmet hair too? Under current law, e-scooters are classed as mobility scooters, which gives them access to everywhere accessible by pedestrians.

There are two certainties: rideables are here to stay and there are more riders on footpaths every day. We all need to up our game before the chance to improve this unwieldy situation scoots by.

t is a jungle out there on the footpaths, with wheeled contraptions zipping among bipeds trudging all in lines.

And as happens when wildness flourishes in crowded urban places, the time has come for a little pruning and shaping. We need far more than legislative reform: we have to consider our interactions, our attitudes and our infrastructure. Bicycles, scooters, e-scooters, mobility scooters and skates of the board, roller and inline kind – the footpaths are booming with life.

And why not? You get from A to B faster and with less effort. But while the visions of skimming along at speed that were once part of science fiction and fantasy are very real now, this is not the utopia depicted in the 1970s and ’80s. With speed comes collisions. And cranky pedestrians. And confusion about what is allowed for whom.

Footpath users don’t need to register their vehicles, and maybe that warrants consideration for review. No registration means no insurance cover and that means anyone flattened or any property damage done is mostly not covered.

deadset had to look twice the other day as I was recovering from COVID and thought I had a relapse at an article I thought I saw. Not Noosa was the headline, which suits me by the way. But it was about a development in Caloundra offering Victorians an alternative to Noosa, which is about the time I thought COVID had kicked in again.

My thoughts on Noosa are pretty well known, apart from going to watch the Pirates, Tigers or Dolphins fight it out against a team from the poor south, I have little interest in going there. Unless there is a surf carnival and I manage to get a park closer than Peregian. Sure the surf is great, but the last time I went there on my dreaded knee board I spent two hours looking for a park. Then, after paddling into a southerly sweep before I actually caught a wave, I managed to drop in on ex-world champ Wendy Botha and basically got told where to go, which I did.

I’ve never been back.

So with that cleared up, and realising it was an actual story, I went on to read about an advertising campaign in the heart of Melbourne teasing those pesky

Victorians that Caloundra is a better option than Noosa. A development at the top of Caloundra Main Street, Paloma Paloma is its trendy name and it will sit on the old Post Office site. Now, growing up we always called Caloundra ‘Nambour by the sea’ and I should know about both as I lived my teenage years in Nambour, and as a toddler had holidays in Caloundra with my grandad. I have always said both places have had some bad press over the years as there are some great people and reasons to live there.

However, in the past few years Caloundra has really taken off and I have to agree with the developer, there are far more options beach-wise at Caloundra.

Kings, Shelly, Happy Valley, Moffat, Ann Street, Currimundi and Wurtulla are some beautiful options with about half the amount of people vying to put up their cabana.

I can see a problem though. How do those taffy noses say Caloundra with a plumb in their mouth when someone at the country club asks them where they holidayed because Noooosaaaa is so easy to say.

KISSING MASKS GOODBYE Like most of us, Sami Muirhead is delighted to say goodbye to wearing a mask, but look out teachers, she will be a regular in her children’s classrooms.

T

o quote Lenard Cohen “Hallelujah!” Masks are no longer required in indoor settings, including workplaces, schools and restaurants! They will continue to be mandatory on public transport and when in high-risk settings such as hospitals and aged care facilities.

They have been a wonderful addition in keeping us all safe. I don’t know about you, but for me masks have become part of the routine mental checklist when you rush out the door. Keys? Credit card? Sunnies? Mask?

At first I was horrified about wearing them because they can look so very sinister, but I have since embraced them and I have invested in masks of many colours and patterns.

My kids still laugh at me when I wear the disposable mask the wrong way around. It is blue side outside for those of you who are slow to learn like me. You see the mask makes getting ready to leave the house much easier as it covers half my face so I feel I don’t need to spread on foundation or slap on lipstick.

Au naturel has never been so easy and helpful to the lazy. The other big news is we are allowed back in our kids classrooms.

Our school did a wonderful job of keeping

kids safe and I am so thankful for this and the tough stance that parents have not been allowed back in rooms. But I am itching to get back into my kid’s spaces to see where they spend so many hours each day. It was Easter, 2020 when I was last inside my youngest child’s room. All those memories were taken away from us of those cute little interactions with his friends and even the bittersweet kiss goodbye at the classroom door each day was snatched from my grasp.

Yes, I am needy! I know parents like myself are really annoying for teachers because we hover like protective mother lionesses just making a fuss about nothing.

But it has made my heart heavy not being able to go into the classroom. Okay, some days I admit I have basically told the kids to tuck and roll out the car door and gleefully drive away to get a coffee or something wonderful with my scant spare time. But those days are the minority.

So to our teachers, I apologise in advance but I will be in the classroom milking every last memory of having “little kids”. I will be that annoying parent, but I promise, in return, I am good for a bottle of wine or two at the end of term. Maybe I better make it a carton!

Medical device advice Ord Minnett recently raised its recommendation on the medical device manufacturer ResMed to Buy from Hold and its target price to $37.90 from $36.

The upgrade was driven by our view that fiscal year 2022 will prove to be a strong year for ResMed as it takes full advantage of the product recall woes of rival Philips. We retain this positive view despite ongoing supply-chain challenges, which weighed on the December quarter result. Production should ramp up over the coming months as chip and component deliveries increase, allowing ResMed to lift device sales into the end of fiscal year 2022, and quite likely into fiscal year 2023. Philips will work hard to recover market share once the recall is dealt with, but we are confident ResMed has both the product range and sales force to ensure it holds onto material market share gains.

Our research indicate ResMed’s deliveries fell short of customer expectations late in the December quarter. This reflects both supply chain challenges (a shortage of key components) and the increased freight times as the Christmas rush exacerbated pandemic-induced challenges. New patient starts have been limited by access

to hardware, with one source reporting the time from diagnosis to treatment has jumped from two to four weeks to four to six weeks. The challenge remains meeting this demand given supply constraints. A lack of semiconductor chips remains the key constraint. Regulation of medical devices restricts ResMed from switching suppliers without prior approval, meaning that, in the near term, ResMed can try to win a greater allocation only from current suppliers.

ResMed has introduced a global $US12 surcharge for all its devices from January 2022. Management sees this as reflecting the ongoing nature of elevated costs, rather than merely an effort to support gross margins. By our calculations, the surcharge will offset around half of the gross margin decline caused by the component and freight cost challenges.

Small cuts to our fiscal year 2022 forecasts incorporate reductions to sales in the December quarter to reflect ongoing supply chain challenges. This was partially offset by the surcharge and a modest boost to sales in early fiscal 2023 to reflect the delay in Philips’ return to the market. We see upside risk to pricing, a protracted competitor recall that positions ResMed well given the likely product shortage, and a benign pricing environment post recent changes to US Medicare reimbursements to so-called durable medical equipment suppliers.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE CAN TREAT PERIPHERAL NEUROPATHY Many people ask how acupuncture works and how it can support your health.

Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins to decrease pain and increase a sense of wellbeing. Research has shown the pain relief achieved with acupuncture works in the same pathways as opioid medications like codeine and Endone.

In a systematic review of eight trials, results showed between 40 and 60 per cent of participants (and up to 82 per cent in one trial) experienced significant improvements.

What should you expect?

Each session involves the insertion of very fine, sterile, single-use needles.

Melanoma March 2022 is aiming to raise $1 million for a world-first clinical trial of a Personalised Immunotherapy Platform, which could transform cancer treatment across the globe and ultimately save many thousands of lives.

The Personalised Immunotherapy Platform (PIP) is a complex tool developed by Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) and seed funded by previous Melanoma March events. It uses a patient’s individual tumour biomarkers to predict resistance to current treatment and identify alternative effective drug therapies to improve survival.

The next crucial step is to conduct a clinical trial of the Personalised Immunotherapy Platform – the PIP-Trial – which is being led by Melanoma Institute Australia. The PIP-Trial aims to enrol patients across multiple centres including MIA’s The Poche Centre in Sydney.

“If successful, this world-first clinical trial could well prove the Personalised Immunotherapy Platform to be the Holy Grail in cancer treatment,” MIA Co-Medical Director, Professor Georgina Long says.

What is spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, resulting in pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, leading to problems with mobility. It is mostly associated with limited mobility in the lower extremities and makes walking more difficult. Symptoms often also include pain, numbness, and tingling in the legs and feet, as well as trouble breathing.

The most common causes of spinal stenosis are age, injury, or disease.

Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition, and if left untreated, spinal stenosis can result in permanent spinal cord damage, and possibly even paralysis.

A doctor can diagnose spinal stenosis by conducting an MRI or CT scan. Once detected, treatment may include physical therapy and medication if the stenosis is mild. In cases of severe spinal stenosis, surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or to widen the spinal canal.

Spinal stenosis can lead to serious disabilities if left untreated, so seeking timely medical attention is imperative.

When recovering from illness or injury or when trying to build muscle, protein is incredibly important.

But did you know that protein is also the key to weight loss?

Protein has what we call a high thermal effect of food (TEF). TEF helps us burn more calories at rest. If we burn more calories at rest, we can burn more fat daily.

The thermal effect on carbohydrates is only around 5 per cent and with fat it is approximately 3 per cent. However, with protein, it is closer to 30 per cent.

This percentage difference is significant and explains why diets moderately high in protein are much more beneficial for fat loss.

Fibre also has a great TEF like protein.

So eat your fruits and vegetables along with your proteins and you are on the path to a healthier lifestyle, and a much better ability to maintain your weight.

But if weight loss is your goal, look at increasing your protein to around two grams per kilo as a starting point and increase to 2.5 grams per kilo if you have a more intense training routine.

SPECTACULAR COAST FUTURE INSPIRING DEVELOPMENT Spotlight Group will be a major player in commercial real estate in the new Maroochydore CBD. WORDS: Tracey Johnstone.

“I

have in my office the list of everything that is going on the map on the Coast; it’s pretty spectacular,” Spotlight Group’s executive deputy chairman and co-owner Zac Fried says.

He then rolls off from the Sunshine Coast Council’s developments brochure the list of major projects that have him excited.

The privately owned Melbournebased company recently opened in Maroochydore its largest superstore at 6000 square metres alongside two other of the group’s brands – Anaconda and Harris Scarfe.

“We have been looking at that location for a very long time,” Mr Fried says.

“Back when hardware chain Masters owned the site, the Spotlight Group were looking at building a store there.”

But it’s really what is underway at Sun Central on the old Horton Park Golf Club area that has enthused Mr Fried. “The council and Sun Central’s vision to convert that into what it is going to be is quite an amazing thing,” he says.

“There is huge potential. The dream that has been set by council and Sun

Central is reality and it is happening.

“Our location is the perfect future edge-of-centre development.”

CBRE’s director of sales and leasing (retail) Brendan Robins says next year there will be three or four more sites under construction in the northern CBD area. “The bulk of the buildings will be built and established by 2030,” he says.

Work on the Maroochydore Spotlight Group site is far from complete. The Stage 2 retail commercial site, at twice the size of Stage 1, is being considered with the

designs due on Mr Fried’s desk now. Once the permits are in place, construction could start as early as next year.

The final Stage 3 development is proposed to include two towers to house residential apartments, a hotel, office space or a combination of those depending on demand, but that might not happen for another six to eight years.

“We need to be realistic,” Mr Robins says. “We don’t want to be an eyesore and stand out with an eight or 10-storey tower down the other end from the CBD.

“Now it’s about focusing on the retail and commercial today and getting that up and trading and then we will come back.”

The Spotlight Group is looking at sites in Caloundra and Noosa for more Spotlight stores and potentially a Harris Scarfe store while Mr Fried has been looking at Gympie.

t was back to the computer and online bidding for some agents as the weekend’s torrential rain and road closures cut off any chance of their scheduled auctions being conducted in-home.

For those agents with auctions scheduled prior to the weekend, even with the major rain event fast approaching, the enthusiasm for a good buy wasn’t dampened.

FROM CARAVAN TO BLI BLI EX-SALES OFFICE The Parklands estate record was smashed last Wednesday when the four-bedroom home at 2 Agnes Place in Bli Bli sold under the hammer for $1.420 million.

The successful buyers from Melbourne can now unpack their caravan. The older couple who had recently relocated to the Coast have been living in their caravan in Diddillibah while they looked for their new bricks and mortar home.

by Century 21’s Grant Smith and his team, the former sales office which was converted back into a modern home with new fixtures and fittings, and which has never been lived in, sold for $320,000 over the reserve.

The property was on the market for 14 days. Mr Smith said they could have had the auction within seven days of listing due to the level of exceptional interest in the 316sqm single-level home sitting on a 918sqm block.

“We had an offer prior to which we considered but we decided to back the process and run it through the campaign which resulted in a much larger result than we had expected,” Mr Smith said.

The early evening auction on the grey, miserable day, attracted a crowd of about 60 people including the nine registered bidders – two from Melbourne and others from Brisbane and the Coast.

“It drew a lot of Peregian Springs and Twin Waters buyers who are priced out of those markets,” Mr Smith said.

The competitive bidding started at $800,000 then went up in $100,000 bids to $1.1 million. It then slowed to $50,000 bids until it reached $1.35 million. “The two last bids were $10,000,” Mr Smith. “I think my underbidder and highest bidder set a limit of $1.4 million, but the auction environment got that extra $20,000.”

“I knew it would be a popular property as not only is it attractive, it ticked a lot of boxes,” listing agent Dan Smith from The Agency said about the fourbedroom home at 76 Glenfinnan Court in Forest Glen which was auctioned last Tuesday evening.

The stunning north-facing singlelevel home is on a large, flat and useable block. It is close to Montessori and Sunshine Coast Grammar schools.

It took about eight minutes for the popular property to sell under the hammer for $2.385 million which was “considerably above” the reserve.

“I have done a lot of auctions, but this was one of the best I have ever had. It was basically all go from start to finish,” Mr Smith added.

There were nine registered bidders from Brisbane, Sydney, regional Queensland northern NSW and the Coast who went non-stop. The bidding started at $1.5 million and went up quickly to $2 million. Several bidders then dropped out. Four bidders continued to push forward, but it was just two that fought it out for the last $200,000, Mr Smith said.

“The top bidders were a young couple from Buderim, who were the eventual buyers, and the underbidder was a couple from northern NSW who had recently sold down there and moved the family up to the Coast,” he added.

ACREAGE TOPS SHOPPING LIST Dan Smith said since the Christmas lull, the desire for acreage has returned to the top of many buyers’ lists.

“I had 50 groups of buyers inspect Glenfinnan through the campaign,” he said. “With nine unconditional buyers, that reflects the depth of the market around the $2 million mark.”

“I have a lot of people coming out of the coastal strip who are on or near the water, who are saying they would rather have a bit more distance between their neighbours,” Mr Smith added.

STATE OF THE NATION’S HOUSING The State of Nation’s Housing 2021-22 from the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation report released on February 25 makes for interesting and valuable reading.

As a snapshot – 1.7 million new households are expected to form between now and 2032 led by single person households; a housing shortfall of about 163,400 less dwellings are expected in the period between 2025 and 2032; and 550,000 net new dwellings will contribute to housing supply in the next three years supported by Government stimulus including HomeBuilder.

Extracted from the NHFIC report and appearing below is some of the commentary which, while it looks at Australia as a whole, will likely have an impact on the regional markets including the Sunshine Coast.

average of 184,000 net new dwellings will be constructed per annum, which are historically high levels. Rising interest rates are likely to lead to a slowing of new construction and the stimulus put in place to mitigate the impact of the pandemic on the economy, including the Federal Government’s HomeBuilder program, has led to dwelling construction running well ahead of the net overseas migration (NOM)-induced falls in new household formation, but that gap is expected to close over the next three years as NOM recovers and stimulus is withdrawn.

“If housing supply grows faster than expected new household formation over the next few years, it could help to put downward pressure on housing costs,” the report added.

Household formation – New household formation is expected to recover strongly from 60,000 in 2022 to 182,000 by 2025.

The annual average household growth of around 175,000 is expected over the 10 years to 2032.

The NHFIC expects around 361,000 families with children (21 per cent of total growth), 488,000 families without children (29 per cent of total growth) and 595,000 lone person households (35 per cent of total growth) will form from 2022 to 2032.

Supply barriers – Supply constraints combined with strong demand for construction has seen the price of key building materials increase sharply, with price growth in some materials soaring 20 to 34 per cent in 2021. In contrast, wage growth has remained more modest.

The NHFIC research outcomes suggest there have been difficulties in accessing new land supply, despite demand rapidly outpacing supply in many greenfield markets, particularly parts of Sydney and Southesast Queensland.

As it can take more than six years to get new housing supply to the market in some areas, the NHFIC suggests pulling back on development decisions now will exacerbate affordability problems in future years when population growth is expected to return to more normal levels.

Regional growth – Trends in 2021 suggest that in the larger states there could be ongoing strong net movement from capital cities to the regions into 2022, although it will take some time to determine whether these behaviours are sustained relative to pre-pandemic urban-regional trends.

There is certainly quite a bit of ‘food for thought’ for homeowners, investors and real estate agents, all of whom are no doubt trying to work out where the residential property market is likely to head in the next 10 years.

Our man in the water is currently snowboarding in Canada. And the current flooding situation on the Sunshine Coast has the surf looking a bit more like a big bowl of soup.

The good news is there is swell but also rain and wind, so only for the experienced surfers here.
