Nothing livens the spirit more than a good old belly laugh, and locals are in for a real treat when That’s Not My Dog! three-day comedy festival hits the Sunshine Coast later this month. With a stellar line-up including headline act Shane Jacobson plus Peter Helliar, Fiona O’Loughlin, Dave O’Neill and Michala Banas, as well as amazing bands, food and local beers, it’s shaping up to be an action-packed event not to be missed. Caitlin Zerafa caught up with Shane and some of the other comedians ahead of the festival and judging by their responses, they can’t wait to visit our beautiful region and make us laugh. Vital shot in the arm against outbreak The federal government has been forced to act quickly to secure hundreds of thousands of doses of a vaccine used to prevent the transmission of monkeypox virus from overseas supplies.

ore than 400,000 monkeypox jabs have been ordered by the federal government in a bid to contain the outbreak. Health Minister Mark Butler announced recently the government had signed an agreement with Bavarian Nordic to secure 450,000 doses, with 22,000 due to arrive in Australia last week. Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly says the first shots could be given as early as next week. The remainder of the doses will arrive later this year and into 2023. The vaccine is a new generation of immunisation, compared with the smallpox jab which is also used to protect against monkeypox. Mr Butler says the vaccine can be used to prevent the transmission of the monkeypox virus, but also as a postexposure treatment. “This vaccine is far more effective and certainly more user friendly for patients which may have compromised immunity,” he says. Professor Kelly says Australia is one of

What is monkeypox? Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The virus is part of the same family as smallpox.

Australian Health Minister Mark Butler speaks during a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra only a few countries to secure supplies of the vaccine. He says monkeypox can adversely affect immuno-compromised adults, children and pregnant women. “If it gets into those populations, it can be quite severe,” he says. “That’s why we’re taking the steps we’re taking and the vaccines will really help with that.” On the question of whether the number of cases is expected to increase in Australia, Prof Kelly says health authorities have been preparing for the virus since May. “All the work done since May ... and the added benefit of the vaccine will continue to help us to control the epidemic here in Australia and I’m very confident that will happen,” he says. Mr Butler says the vaccine will mostly be available through state and territory sexual health clinics. The government will roll out training for clinicians and a community engagement program. Two health bodies

are forming a taskforce to respond to monkeypox: the Australian Federation of AIDS Organisations, and the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine. They commended the government for securing the vaccines. “Gay and bisexual men are already taking monkeypox very seriously, monitoring for symptoms and regularly seeking medical advice. This is a very welcome additional tool,” the federation’s acting chief Heath Paynter said. It is understood all but two of the 58 reported cases in Australia have been among travellers returning from overseas. Gay and bisexual men are most at risk, although it is not a sexually transmitted infection. “We expect the outbreak will begin to slow after 75,000 members of our community have had one dose of the vaccine and may not be eliminated until 250,000 doses have been administered to those who need them most,” the society’s president and sexual health specialist Dr Nick Medland said. – AAP

What are the symptoms? Monkeypox symptoms are similar to smallpox but milder, and it is rarely fatal. Symptoms can include: fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion, respiratory symptoms, and a rash that looks like blisters. How is it spread? The virus can spread from person-to-person through direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids. It also can be spread by respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face contact or during intimate physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling or sex. In addition, pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta. What treatments are available for monkeypox? There are no treatments specifically for monkeypox virus infections. However, because of genetic similarities in the viruses, antiviral drugs used to treat smallpox may be used to treat infections. How can I prevent getting monkeypox? Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox. Avoid contact with objects and materials that a person with monkeypox has used.

Comedy with extra

bite Shane Jacobson heads the starstudded line-up of talented performers bursting with hilarious jokes and stories to tickle our funnybones in a new-style entertainment festival coming to Caloundra. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

rowing up watching his own father light up a room, Shane Jacobson knew from an early age he was destined to make people laugh. As one of Australia’s most loveable actors and comedians, there is no doubt Jacobson has put more than a few smiles on faces during his 40-year career. Believing that laughter feeds the soul, the down-to-earth entertainment legend says Aussies have the best sense of humour and whole-heartedly embrace the many television, film and stage productions he has been involved in. But it was a story of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan gravitating towards one of his films that inspired Jacobson’s latest project. That’s Not My Dog! – The Festival is coming to Caloundra this August, bringing with it more than 20 of Australia’s biggest names in comedy and music. Inspired by the 2018 film That’s Not My Dog, the festival will emulate a laid-back gathering where a group of hilarious entertainers will take to the stage together in a bid to outdo each other. Fiona O’Loughlin, Michala Banas, Dave O’Neill and Peter Helliar are some of the names set to feature in the starstudded line-up, with the festival also showcasing local food, beer and wine. Speaking with My Weekly Preview,

Jacobson believes it is more important than ever to find some comic relief amid everyday life and says this festival will be unlike anything else seen before. “The body needs water, and sometimes the soul, heart and mind just need a laugh,” Jacobson says. “Especially after the past few years. We truly think it’s time to laugh again. “This is live, unscripted and dangerous. What I’m looking forward to most is people discovering the festival for what it is. “It’s not a normal comedy festival and it’s not a normal music festival – it’s a mixture. It’s like being invited to a pub with a bunch of comedians and musos and hanging out with them and having a good ol’ laugh.” Jacobson says the name of the film, featuring the likes of Paul Hogan and Jimeoin, and subsequent festival is inspired by the punchline of an old joke. He says That’s Not My Dog has been incredibly successful, with its unlikely audience of serving troops sparking the festival debut. “The film came about because myself and director Dean Murphy realised people just weren’t telling jokes anymore,” Jacobson says. “It was a bit of a dying art and Australians used to be famous for jokes. “We are the custodians of a very special brand of humour in Australia.

“Unbeknownst to us, the film was popular with soldiers serving in Afghanistan. One of those soldiers – his dad runs events – and they would watch the film together when he came back from serving overseas. “It became a great father-son bonding time and they thought it would be a great idea for a festival and contacted us. The rest is history.” Claiming that, aside from food, laughter and music are his favourite things, Jacobson says the arts have a

wonderful power to bring people together. As one of four children, he grew up around a family full of people with the ability to walk into a room and infect others with laughter. “My dad, in particular. Any room he walks into, people will gather around dad because he is so much fun,” Jacobson says.

“Watching my hero – my dad – make people laugh and tell me: ‘How much fun is your dad?’, I absolutely loved it. I never wanted to do anything but that. “I wanted to be able to have that effect on people and I get fuel out of seeing people smile.” Jacobson says Caloundra is the perfect location for the festival, not just because of its relaxed lifestyle, but also its allure for festival-goers to have a weekend away and escape the cold weather. He describes landing at Sunshine Coast Airport like “getting into a warm bath with a champagne in your hand”. “I love the Sunny Coast,” he says. “There is a laid-back lifestyle there that becomes obvious as soon as you land. “I’ve got mates coming up and the Sunny Coast is half the reason they are coming. You can see music and comedy anywhere, but having music and comedy on the Coast sounds like an awesome weekend. “Sunny Coast people have so embraced the festival, too, and the location in Kings Beach Park is custom made for it.” The jam-packed festival schedule will see events across three stages, including a comedy workshop and Mix FM Dad Jokes session. What is one of the best reactions you’ve had during a performance? One of the best reactions I’ve had from a comedy performance is people coming up to me after the show and saying, ‘Oh my God, your characters are so relatable’. I love knowing that the characters that I embody in my work are so personal to me yet, at the same time, incredibly universal.

How did your comedy career begin? I have been doing comedy for 30 years. I used to work in the public relations industry in the ’80s. My client was the taxi industry. They asked me what can they do to improve the image of taxis. I said, ‘Have you tried deodorant?’ I got sacked and started doing comedy.

What is one of the best reactions you’ve had during a performance? Starting a cake fight at The Sit Down Comedy Club in Brisbane. A truly outrageous evening. Don’t worry – most of it was eaten. What might we expect from you at the festival?

What is one of the best reactions you’ve had during a performance? My first gig in the US. It was before there were many Aussies going over and I was worried they wouldn’t get me, but it smashed. I think they were surprised we spoke English.

I’m telling some jokes that you can take home. It’s ‘Take Away Comedy’ – all part of the style of the movie and the festival. There’s a lost art in telling jokes to your family and friends, so bring some note paper.

What might we expect from you at the festival? I’m a gag specialist, having grown up around the country’s best joke specialists. My normal stand-up set has a lot more gags than most other acts, rather than situational stuff.

What do you love most about the Sunshine Coast? My favourite thing to do at the Sunshine Coast is go to my favourite Moroccan restaurant, Marrakech, and order the lamb tajine. It is one of those meals that you cannot get enough of.

What is one of the best reactions you’ve had during a performance? I had a woman tell me she laughed so much, she did a bit of wee. She also added she’d had eight kids, so I can’t take all the credit.

That’s Not My Dog! – The Festival is happening at Kings Park, Caloundra, from August 26-28. Australia’s funniest comics and entertainers working together in unique group sessions to outdo one another by telling the funniest jokes and stories possible. Each night will wrap up with a music performance: Ross Wilson and The Peaceniks (Friday), Killing Heidi (Saturday) and Joe Camilleri and The Black Sorrows (Sunday). What do you love most about comedy? Total creative freedom. When the microphone’s in your hand, you can say whatever you like, so long as it’s funny. Even if it isn’t funny, you can blame the audience for just not ‘getting it’.

What do you love most about the Coast? This is my first trip to Caloundra and I am beyond excited. I’ve done a bit of Googling and it looks like heaven. I’m going to grab as many tips as I can from the locals ... and thoroughly enjoy being warm.

How did your comedy career begin? I fell into comedy through poverty. I used to be a musician in a troop called the Como String Quartet and we did classical music/comedy. We toured all around the world playing festivals. Then in 1990, the recession hit, so I went to the Adelaide Fringe and started to do stand-up so I wouldn’t have to split money with so many dudes.

What is one of the best reactions you’ve had during a performance?

How did your comedy career begin? I collapsed into comedy straight after school and I’ve kept making comedy any way I can.

What do you love most about comedy? I love nothing more than a good laugh. A cracking joke or funny story that makes your face contort and stomach tighten with uncontrollable giggling is one of the best things in life.

Rodger Thomson keeps young at heart through volunteering for tourism

Rodger brought to his volunteering role a rich background in tourism (from working for Ansett and the Orient Line, to a shipping agent for P&O Cruises and as a travel agent in Melbourne), as well as personal heroics that involved driving a Morris Major all around the UK, and a deep knowledge of the Sunshine Coast through owning and operating a Caloundra coffee shop.

ow in his 90 year, Rodger Thomson has been sharing his love and knowledge of the Sunshine Coast with visitors from all over the world for the past 28 years. th

Come rain, hail or shine (and fortunately on the ‘Sunny’ Coast, it does shine a lot), he will be at the Glass House Mountains Visitor and Interpretive Centre every Wednesday to do his three and a half hour ‘shift’, not that he ever sees it as a ‘shift’. As a volunteer, he is passionate about sharing his love of his ‘backyard’ with visitors from as far afield as Madagascar and Melbourne. He can’t begin to count how many hours he’s put in over those 28 years but he estimates it is in the thousands, and as for the number of people with whom he’s 12 My Weekly Preview | August 11, 2022

“I’m getting closer to falling off the edge, as they say, but I’m not ready to do that yet! shared his intimate knowledge of the destination…well, he focuses on individuals and what their interests are. “I love being able to help people plan an enjoyable day out whether that is climbing a local mountain, take one of the many walking tracks, or visiting one of the really special viewing sights that we have in the Glass House Mountains,” he said. Rodger does it all for free, with a smile and a good measure of diplomacy thrown in. And what better way to discover the best of

Rodger’s enthusiasm, passion, and dedication to promoting our wonderful region is truly impressive and he is an inspiration for his fellow volunteers. In his totally self-deprecating way says: “I’m getting closer to falling off the edge, as they say, but I’m not ready to do that yet! Working as a tourist ambassador, meeting people from all over the world and volunteering keeps me young at heart.” Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) operates three accredited Visitor Information Centres (VICs) across the Sunshine Coast located at Glass House Mountains, Montville, and Sunshine Coast Airport. VSC member, The Ginger Factory got involved in the program as they needed a refresh of their rates and fact sheets. As a result of the program, their team has updated their market-ready packages and implemented a vegetarian menu (to meet different cultural needs). The creation of the Smokin’ Hot Sunday in the Buderim Beer Garden has been another brainchild of the Ginger Factory team. This is the perfect spot to enjoy a bite to eat, Buderim Ginger Beer on tap, and some delicious food from the smoker all while listening to live music. The first Smokin’ Hot Sunday was so successful that it has become a monthly event. “The event has attracted a different demographic and given our visitors another reason to spend longer in the park. We hope to increase its frequency in 2023,” Gabby said. Coming up the Ginger Factory’s Gruffalo Day will be held on Wednesday, 17 August 2022 from 9.30am until 11.30am with Gruffalo appearances, Gruffalo book reading, Gruffalo-themed food, and activities. Ahead of storm season, Sunshine Coast residents and business owners are being reminded to have a plan in place, to pack an emergency and evacuation kit and ensure insurance policies are up to date. It comes as the Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) undertakes training to prepare for extreme events, including major flooding. The training sessions are also a chance to put a new digital tool, Guardian IMS, which tracks and shares real-time data during disasters, through its paces. “Guardian is a valuable ally when responding to a disaster, so we’re excited to learn more about its capabilities which will be implemented into our disaster response moving forward,” LDMG chair and Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says.

GREASING WHEELS OF OPPORTUNITY An innovative Sunshine Coast business hopes to safeguard the Australian Defence Force’s machinery after being named Queensland’s best new product. Founded by three strangers in 2020, GreaseBoss has grown from GreaseBoss co-founder operating in a Meridan Plains Tim Hall garage to supplying one of the world’s largest natural resource companies, Glencore. The start-up won Best New Product Launch at the Bowen Basin Mining Club’s 2022 Queensland Mining Awards. GreaseBoss co-founder Tim Hall says that after 18 months developing a digitised grease gun, the award is a big “credibility tick”. The recognition will place GreaseBoss on the mining industry’s radar and “open doors” in a goal of supplying our army, navy and air force and bringing exciting opportunities to the Sunshine Coast.

$300 MILLION Three major milestones have been marked on the $300 million Mons and Maroochydore interchange upgrade. In the past month, northbound (Exit 200) and southbound (Exit 201) exit ramps and a new, four-lane concrete bridge over the highway have opened to traffic. Both upgraded exits are much longer and wider, to provide more queuing space for traffic. Meanwhile, traffic travelling from Maroochydore Road to Nambour Connection Road has been diverted onto the newly built Maroochydore Road interchange bridge. This temporary diversion will allow works to occur on the existing westbound bridge. Synchronised traffic signals have also been installed at the Maroochydore and Nambour Connection Roads roundabout to improve safety and regulate traffic flow.

BLOOD DONORS FLOW IN AFTER BAN LIFTS An incredible 21,000 Australians have signed up to become blood and plasma donors since the lifting of the UK ‘mad cow’ blood donor ban. New figures from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood reveal 20,711 people booked in for their first blood donation in the first week after the ban was lifted. The rule change means Lifeblood’s Liz Diaz and Brodi Haran that anyone who lived or travelled in the UK for six months or more between 1980 and 1996 can now donate blood and plasma in Australia. GOING FOR GOLD Mooloolaba surf club eyes off its return to the glory days of surf sport.

n Ironman legend is set to shake up the coaching at a Coast surf club, bringing with him a renewed focus on surf sports. As one of the most famous names in surf sport, Rhys Drury, is joining Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club (MSLSC) as surf sports head coach. Drury has countless accolades, including multiple podium finishes for the Nutri-Grain and Uncle Toby Iron Series, winner of the Coolangatta Gold and numerous state and Aussie medals. It comes as MSLSC welcomes a fresh and youthful team of coaching staff to revive the club’s competitive history. Drury joins Mooloolaba’s highly experienced coaches this year with Maddy Gale (nee Dunn) and Josh Linton. MSLSC surf sports director Trent Robinson says it is vital for surf lifesaving on the Sunshine Coast that a club as iconic as Mooloolaba has a strong surf sports team and attracts and nurtures up-and-coming talent. “We are very excited to be taking Mooloolaba Surf Sports in this new direction,” he says. “The club has long been the underdog of the competition circuit, and we are working hard to get the club back to its peak of the glory

days. “We are proud of our new coaching team and thrilled that such a legend of the surf, Rhys Drury, will be heading up the coaching staff. “It will be an exciting time for our junior members to be mentored and coached by one of surf lifesaving’s greats.” Mr Robinson says the club’s Boat Academy last season was instrumental in injecting youth into the sport with a three-year goal to invigorate all aspects of the MSLSC surf sports program, plus a new youth program. “In three years, we want to be competitive in all aspects of surf sports, including surf rescue, iron, surf boats, surf craft, rescue and resuscitation and beach.”

WALL-TO-WALL CREATIVITY Coast artist’s breathtaking murals are big on encouraging passers-by to stop and think about protecting our precious environment. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.

Bli-Bli artist whose murals are splashed throughout the region is being recognised for her contribution to community and advocacy for protecting the environment. Claire Matthews, affectionately known in the artist world as ‘Fuzeillear’, has been painting across the Sunshine Coast for nine years. Among her best-known works is Moustache Man on Ocean Street in Maroochydore. Arriving from the United Kingdom 13 years ago, she uses local flora and fauna as inspiration for her murals. Fuzeillear hopes her murals connect with the local community. Each one she completes is threaded with a theme of igniting conversations on

protecting the environment. “I paint public murals that highlight and champion our native wildlife species and the challenges they face,” she says. “Life can be stressful, busy and complicated but I aim to create public art that allows passers-by to stop, take a breath and, even just for a moment, drift away. My hope is always to leave something that will make a difference – whether that be to remind people of the fragile beauty of the world around us or just to make someone feel a little bit brighter and a little less alone.” Working with watered washes and brushes, Fuzeillear uses shadowy textures and strong highlights to bring a sense of depth and space to each piece. Her latest success includes taking out

the inaugural Fuel Your Passion contest, nudging out an impressive cast of Sunshine Coast artists and creatives. An initiative of the Eumundi Brewery, the competition was a chance to support the many artists and innovators on the Coast after a challenging two years for the creative sector. From 350 entrants, the final eight were put to a public vote, with drawing artist Dan Hannay and musician and multicultural teacher Samuela Taukave – known as Skillz FJ – announced as runners-up. As the Fuel Your Passion winner, Fuzeillear receives $10,000 towards her creative work from the Brewery’s community fund. “Far out, do I love the Sunshine Coast,” she says. “I count myself incredibly blessed to be here and to have been able to contribute to this beautiful community by painting so many murals across the Coast. “Winning the comp means I can now paint bigger and better walls and spread the message further. Fuzeillear’s murals can be found in Maroochydore, Eumundi, Landsborough, Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Buderim, Nambour and Noosa. FLAGGING A GREAT WAY TO PUT FAMILY FUN BACK ON COURSE With a friendly atmosphere and delightful outlook, it is no wonder Maroochy River Mini Golf is becoming a favourite day out for all ages. Since opening to the public in November 2019, the 18-hole mini golf course is an ideal place to socialise outdoors and enjoy delicious pizza from the on-site Cane Cutters Bar and Bistro. Maroochy River Golf Club general manager Charlie McGill says the course features two difficulty levels, meaning visitors can play either a relaxed or more challenging game. “You won’t find any fibreglass animals, clowns or windmills at Maroochy River Mini Golf,” Mr McGill says. “It has classy, landscaped humps and hollows, delightful water features and

pretend sand traps. More than 10,000 solar panels have been installed at state schools across the Sunshine Coast to help slash electricity costs and cut carbon emissions as part of the State Government’s Advancing Clean Energy Schools (ACES) program. Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt says the program is good news for schools and contributes to the renewable energy target. “ACES is making a significant contribution to the 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030, with the 200,000 solar panels on state school rooftops (state-wide)

expected to generate an average of 280MW of electricity every day,” he says. “The 10,100 panels on the Sunshine Coast alone can generate around 14,000 kilowatts of electricity every day.” Beerwah State High School has 270 solar panels installed, which will offset the costs of air-conditioning and other energy costs in a $180,000 investment. Principal Lyn McDonald says the solar panels installed on the roof of C Block and the Resource Centre will generate an average 390 kilowatts of electricity a day.

Your responsibilities in a traffic crash The Sunshine Coast has recorded a high number of traffic crashes in the past couple of months. Firstly, if you are involved in a traffic crash, ensure you are in a safe location away from traffic.

Do you need police at the scene? Since January 1, 2015, police are not required to attend every traffic crash. For police to attend a traffic crash, a person must be trapped or injured. If that is the case, call 000 and then stop and give assistance to anyone who is injured if it is safe to do so. If there is suspicion that drugs or alcohol are involved, police are needed to direct traffic, manage traffic hazards or if anyone has failed to exchange details, call Policelink on 131444. Failure to exchange details may incur

an infringement notice for the driver involved in the crash for failing to fulfil their duties. However, if a driver feels threatened by another driver to give their details at the crash and are in fear of personal safety, call police. An alarming number of hit-and-run crashes are being reported to police. A hit and run is when a vehicle involved in a crash leaves the scene without stopping. The crash may not be witnessed by anyone and it may go unsolved. If your vehicle requires towing, contact your insurer or a towing company of your choice. If you cannot arrange a tow of your vehicle and exhaust all options, call Policelink. Section 287 of the Transport Operations Regulation 2009 requires police to be notified of a reportable traffic crash within 24 hours, except in exceptional circumstances when it must be reported as soon as possible. If you are involved in a traffic crash, have exchanged details, and have none of the above circumstances, there is no need to report the crash to police. Drive safely. CHUCKING OUT A GREAT TRADITION

Jane Stephens believes the pandemic may have sounded the death knell for the infamous Aussie ‘sickie’ as we lose valuable work and school days.

Ashley Robinson regrets some of his cheap and nasty purchases in the past, when forking out for quality might have saved him in the long run.

he Great Australian Sickie may well be dead – killed off by real diseases that have created (heaven forbid) actual sickness. ‘Chucking a sickie’ used to be considered a national institution, providing as much fodder for comedians as it created headaches for bosses. It grew from the long-standing national industrial relations gift that was paid sick leave for all non-casual employees. Favourite sickie days were when big sporting events, such as cricket Tests, were in town or were used to build a bridge of days off between two public holidays that fell close together. Sickies fell from favour as our HR laws got tougher and our society became more politically correct. What was once a larrikin act became viewed as lazy and lacking in collegiality. But while the sickie was already dying, COVID and the flu launched a one-two punch and laid it out on the canvas. The latest data shows Queensland school students will likely have at least a full week off sick this year, befallen by the flu, COVID and the usual colds and lurgies. In this pandemic age, viruses are

leaving friendship groups shredded and continuity of learning in tatters. When school is in for only 185 days this year, and the weeks abutting the holidays considered padding, that is a lot of learning days lost. Attending school 10 per cent less than previous generations is going to bite: repeated studies show continuity of school attendance is directly correlated with school and career achievement, social connection and personal resilience. But we should not get too sad about the Great Australian Sickie going the way of the dodo. Data from Roy Morgan shows more than eight million employed Aussies have 175 million days of annual leave owing – at least two weeks each – up from 150 million a year ago. Another 10 per cent have seven weeks in the can. The Great Australian Sickie may well be replaced by the Great Australian Holiday, probably all at once in summer when everyone slides into slow-mo at work anyway. Fingers crossed it isn’t replaced by the predicted Great Australian Resignation, though: such a massive payout may well sink us all.

have a friend who has a great reply when asked about why she bought something that mere mortals like me would find somewhat expensive. She says, “I can’t afford to buy something cheap. I haven’t enough money to keep replacing it. It has to last. It has to be great quality.” When she first said that to me, I thought of the normal poor man’s response: “It’s okay for you because you can afford it.” But as I computed what she said, it does make quite a bit of sense. At the time, I was buying socks from a store recommended by my friend’s partner. Like the proverbial bull in the china shop, I grabbed three bundles of socks, making eight pairs in total – six plain and two patterned – and gave them to the proprietor. The proprietor said that with the 15 per cent discount, that came to $108. Too embarrassed to pull out of the transaction, I reluctantly paid. But then it hit me: it was so long ago when I bought the original lot that I had forgotten how expensive they were, yet I still had most of the them. My friend was right: quality lasts. It’s like batteries. I usually baulk at buying the quality ones and find the

cheapest ones I can. But then I probably replace them that many times that they cost more than the tried-and-true brand. Wine is possibly one exception to the rule. Over the years in hospitality, I have learnt enough about wine to survive. Beer is another matter (expert), but I know enough about the grape to get me by and for what I like. It’s quite strange as I am not at all influenced by brand but a little by price and a lot by taste. I could never buy a bottle of Penfold’s Grange and drink it. I would feel guilty spending that type of money on a 750ml bottle of plonk. It would be like someone giving me a Bentley or a Mercedes to drive: onlookers and the police would assume immediately that I had stolen it. In my mind, a good wine has to have an interesting label and taste like you want it to taste, with no chemicals that wake you up in the middle of the night sweating and prepared to drink the water out of the toilet bowl to quench dryness of your tongue. Yes, I know I am all class. I just have to figure out how to tuck my trousers into my socks so everyone can see what a quality human I am.

TEARS OF JOY FOR DYNAMIC DUOS Sami Muirhead reminisces about some of the most memorable couplings as audiences mark milestones on the big and small screens.

emember when Lenny and Scott were married on the soapie Neighbours and we all cried happy tears as Angry Anderson belted out the song Suddenly? I sure do. I was one of two million Aussies who watched that wedding. Twenty million watched it in the United Kingdom. The year was 1987 and I was a classic teenager from the ’80s with a bad perm and braces. I loved Rick Astley, The Bangles and Whitesnake. I remember vividly my favourite outfit: a sky-blue taffeta bubble skirt, teamed with a crop top and a big, thick elastic black belt, topped off with leg warmers. Oh ’80s fashion, you little devil! So, last week, Kylie and Jason delighted me when they reunited in Ramsay Street for its swansong episode, wrapping up the soapie after 37 years of drama in Erinsborough. For me Jason and Kylie (or their characters Charlene and Scott) were the most perfect couple on screen and off. Then, they released Especially For You in 1988 and life could not get better for me. In reality, of course, Kylie was lured by ‘bad boy’ Michael Hutchence, to slide to the wild side of rock’n’roll. Kylie left Jason

and dated the INXS lead singer for two years. Who could blame the girl, really? But ‘Lenny’ and Scott will always have a place as one of the most iconic duos on our screens. And speaking of classic duos, this year is the 30th anniversary since The Bodyguard movie was released. It has been three decades since Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner captured our hearts and then smashed them with that plot of the famous singer and the bodyguard falling in love but parting ways in the final scenes as I Will Always Love You is performed and us mere mortals melted in a pile of tears and snot in our movie chairs. Another duo I just adore is in TV series Grace and Frankie, with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the lead roles. The comedy savours female friendship in all its glory as well as showing us that sometimes life throws curve balls and all we can do is try to make lemonade out of lemons. Here’s to our duos we love to see together on the big and little screen. Other classic pairings are Hans Solo and Princess Leia from Star Wars, Big and Carrie from Sex And The City, and Rachel and Ross from Friends. I do note, as well, that Kylie is still single. So, maybe she and Jason will end up growing old together after all.

One thing the pandemic has given us is a renewed interest in exploring and enjoying the experiences within our own backyard. It is the perfect stop-gap for the travel-hungry and an opportunity to rediscover tourism hotspots, unearth new places and support local businesses. The best part? It won’t impact heavily on the budget for any larger trips you have planned. Whether it is adventure you seek or perhaps a fun foodie experience, the Sunshine Coast has plenty of offer. On a recent Friday, keen for a break

from the rush of everyday life, we drove the short distance to Maroochydore in the hope of enjoying a relaxed weekend. Down time – Wine & Nine: Sister to The Nines, this urban-vibe bar and café overlooks Cornmeal Creek at Sunshine Plaza. For a late brunch, we couldn’t go past the apple pie French toast with poached apple and salted caramel. Dinner – Giddy Geisha: It is easy to understand why people line the street to score a seat here. Located in Market Lane, the contemporary Asian street-food restaurant has a distinct urban grunge vibe. The team dish up top-notch food. No expense has been spared when it comes to quality ingredients. We recommend sharing a variety of plates to enjoy the entire experience. The South Island of New Zealand is a wonderful holiday destination with spectacular scenery and a large variety of activities to keep the avid traveller happy. Travel Associates owner Therese Playford says while living in Christchurch she discovered the natural beauty of the South Island. AUSTRALIAN REAL ESTATE – SAME, SAME, BUT DIFFERENT The Sunshine Coast has its own micro market with a unique climate of supply and demand. WORDS: Gail Forrer.

he impact of interest rate rises will not have the effect on the typical owner-occupier borrower and property prices that many headlines suggest, especially on the Sunshine Coast, says Direct Collective CEO and data specialist Mal Cayley. His predictions are based on a number of reasons including financial capacity in the property market. “Seventy per cent of all mortgages are held by the top 40 per cent of income earners,” he says. “That means those with loans can afford them. “It’s also prudent to note that those with long-term loans have been paying down their homes at historically low rates and are well ahead on payments, and those who have applied for a loan in recent years can afford rates to rise more than two per cent before there is any real impact and the interest rates are still within those limits. In terms of impact on property prices, he says Australian does not have just one property market. “Based on the local drivers of economy, demand and supply, Australia

PRICING OUTLOOK has over 2,000 micro markets.” “Not all markets perform the same and to suggest otherwise is dangerous.” Mr Cayley explains that reporting ‘medians’ the middle numbers, when markets are busy and prices rising, comes from more activity in the top end of the market, thus lifting medians. However, when markets are normal, there is a lot more activity in the bottom 2/3 of the

market, thus lowering medians. “It doesn’t mean prices have fallen to have a median change,” he says. Thirdly, he questions how the competing headlines of an accommodation crisis (increasing homelessness and a rental crisis), which screams ‘undersupply’ can have the same mediums, saying property prices will crash.

“Most sellers are subsequent buyers and a fast moving market makes selling and buying stressful. Most people hold property long-term and fluctuations in the market year-to-year often make very little difference to overall performance over the hold period.
