In 2020, 22,634 new book titles were released in Australia when we had a population of almost 25.4 million. This meant newly published authors made up just 0.089 per cent of Australians.
A t two years of age, Lincoln Rawlins had memorised his favourite books and was able to ‘read’ them back to his parents. At the age of seven, Lincoln was writing song lyrics for the music he composed during his guitar lessons.
And, at eight years of age, Lincoln became one of Australia’s youngest authors when he released Sprout’s Idea, a picture book that captures his values of teamwork, kindness and using positivity to overcome obstacles.

Event co-organiser, fashion parade model and author of breast cancer blog #UnBreasted, Joanna Atzori, says she is proud to model as a “fabulously flat and fierce” breast cancer survivor, following her diagnosis in 2019, aged 41.
Party will be held at Venue 114 on September 17. It will feature breast cancer survivors, ranging in age from 41 to 64 years, modelling lingerie, breast prostheses, swimwear and clothing to fundraise for the McGrath Foundation and the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Program.
“Being involved in this fashion parade is me putting myself out there to show the world I’m proud of how I’ve endured breast cancer and to show other survivors they have an army of supporters beside them.”
About 450 Sunshine Coast women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, which is the most common cancer affecting local females, followed by melanoma and colorectal cancer.
“Many of our Sunshine Coast models are using the fashion parade as an opportunity to celebrate their postsurgery body and show others that thriving after breast cancer might look different for everyone but it looks beautiful for all,” she says.

A Landsborough teenager who has overcome more adversity than many her age is being recognised with a prestigious award from an organisation that has helped through some of her toughest days. Georgia Hayward is a youth member of Legacy Sunshine Coast after becoming an orphan at age 11. Losing both her father, who was an Australian Defence Force veteran and mother to cancer in 2013 and 2017 respectively, Georgia now lives with her Legacygrandmother.hasbeen integral in assisting the Beerwah State High School student Do you have a news tip? ARTHUR’S RIDE FOR GOOD Maroochydore veteran Arthur Reeves is preparing to take on a 2100-kilometre challenge to raise money for Legacy. The 77-year-old will be part of a team of veterans riding 50cc mopeds from thefrom Royal Australian Air Force base in Amberley to the base in Townsville for the Scootaville 2022 challenge. “It will be a challenge but I’m fairly active and I am keen to see if I can do it,” he says. Mr Reeves was an infantry soldier in the Vietnam War where he served in the fifth Royal Australian Regiment during its first tour in 1966-67. He continues to give back to his community as a volunteer, visiting fellow veterans and driving thedriving bus for the Bolton Clarke Tantula Rise community. Celebrating her milestone birthday on August 12 the Maroochydore woman, who still lives independently, has become an inspiration within her local community. Originally from Newcastle, Mary, and her late husband Ron, purchased a block of land in Maroochydore after regularly visiting for holidays.
The heritage listed Caloundra lighthouses are set to undergo important rehabilitation work to ensure the region’s signature maritime beacons stand the test of time. Thanks toof funding from Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts and Heritage Levy, work has now begun to install new timber decking and balustrading,install new timber plus provide vital weatherproofing and roof works. Division two councillor Terry Landsberg says the project will ensure the culturally significant lighthouses are preserved for future generations. “The original 1896 lighthouse is the town’s oldest surviving building, and its 1968 neighbouring replacement is one of only two of its type inof Australia,” he says. Over the past 15 years,he the Friends of the Caloundra Lighthouses community group has welcomed more than 13,000 visitors through the lighthouses with council’s support.
SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast has revealed revealed the names of its adorable pair of little blue penguin chicks. The chicks, whose gender is yet to be determined, were the first of the species to be born at the aquarium and are an incredible testament to the dedication of the hard-working team who care for the colony daily. The winning names, as determined by a public voting campaign, are Ziggie and Dasher.
Surrounded by friends and family at a surprise birthday party at her church, St Peter’s Anglican Church in Maroochydore, Ms Norris says it is a surprise in itself to turn“It’s100.a big surprise because I always thought I’d be lucky if I got to 60,” she says. “I never ever walked around or did anything and thought I was young or felt old… I just felt like I always felt.” Mrs Norris’ health advice to all the “whippersnappers” out there is to keep up with your passions.
Sadly, Mr Norris died in 1978 before they were able to move and it was not until 1991 that Mrs Norris moved to the area and built her home.
“Keep doing what you usually are doing and never say I can’t, because once people start saying I can’t you see people start going backwards,” she says. Over the years she has become an integral part of her church community spending years providing morning tea after Wednesday morning service.

The Sunshine Coast Marathon was a huge success and because the start and finish is at Alex I see a fair bit of what goes into organising it, as well as the performances by allOninvolved.theFriday before, the lovely ladies from Zonta put on a charity lunch to support the marathon and Rise to the Challenge, a charity supporting domestic violenceRosannavictims.Natoli was the MC but due to personal circumstances, could not attend. Simply due to the convenience factor, I got the gig. Well not exactly… they rang Caroline Hutchinson first, but it was her birthday so she told them to ring me. So there you have it. I digress. Leading up to the event, I was asked to find a wheelchair ramp for the stage for guest Natasha Price who is a wheelchair marathoner. Eventually I tracked one down. It cost $500, which in my opinion was far too expensive. The required length also made it nearly impossible to fit. I couldn’t find an alternative so it was decided there would be no stage. It was all going well until Tash spoke and, of course, only the people in the front could see her. I sat and listened to her stunning story of courage, feeling smaller and smaller with every incredible word. I have always thought I was an advocate given my more than two decades of work with the Nambour and Currimundi special schools. It seems I haven’t been paying enough attention –untilTashnow.spoke about how she and business partner Adam Shepherd help others via their organisation, InvincAble, which supports people with disabilities to achieve their goals. It was never more obvious to me that we take our mobility for granted and do the reverse for those that need it. I think it is best summed up by Stella Young, comedian, journalist and activist: “I do not identify as a person with a disability. I’m a disabled person. And I’ll be a monkey’s disabled uncle if I’m going to apologise for that. My disability exists not because I use a wheelchair, but because the broader environment isn’t accessible.” I pledge to do better. The opinions expressed are those of the authors. Ipeople are doddery, deaf and daggy. But there is little truth in this: most older people in our society are far from the stereotype, with a huge portion active, vibrant and engaged in the texture of life. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare figures show 16 per cent of the population is aged over 65 and the older demographic is growing faster than the younger age groups. More than a third of the nation is over 50. One in five of those people are still working after age 65 and a third are what health authorities call “active ageing” and/ or volunteer in some capacity. These are far from the cartoonish fuddy-duddies depicted in ads. Imagine if advertisers painted people with disabilities, indigenous Australians or women in this stereotypical way? Picture, if you will, the utter outrage. Perhaps the problem is partly that the people making the ads are younger, or that it is easier to regurgitate old ideas than to create new ones. Data from recent surveys conducted by lobby group Age of Majority in the US show that three specific stereotypes of older consumers in ads stand out: a lack of ability to use technology, physical weakness and mental inferiority. The bias towards the young in advertising traces back decades.

During the Mad Men heyday of the 1960s, young people represented the most potent growth sector of the economy because millions of Baby Boomers hadn’t decided what kind of home gadgets, clothing or cars they preferred yet. Older people were thought to be frugal and already brand loyal, so it was clever for product marketers to target people between 15 and 25, an age bracket thought to be the time people decide what they like. But older people are not like those in days of yore. They move and flex just like other groups. They can change their minds on brands, many are digital early adopters and many shift attitudes with the advent of new information. The point is, they are not all tired and grey. Advertisers should also be reminded that older people hold most of the wealth: they have more spending money on average than younger people. It is possible to be grey-haired and radiant, older and engaged. And it is time advertisers got on board with

I don’t know of a sector that hasn’t been affected in some shape or form. The hospitality sector in particular is one of the hardest sectors hit due to the impact of the restrictions reducing the number of patrons at Cafes and Restaurants. Staff are/were absent with COVID symptoms, and the lack of available workers such as migrants on Work and Holiday, or Temporary Work Visa’s, has all lead to excess pressure being placed on employers.Toattract staff, employers are offering above award wages, flexible work arrangements, and other monetary benefits. The flow on effect is, employers are competing with each other to drive up the wage to attract new employees. Meanwhile, existing employees are rightfully asking for a wage increase; after all, why should a new employee doing the same job, be earning more? At HRM, requests for setting salary bands have increased.Wehave been advising clients that to attract potential employees, and to retain employees, is not all about driving up the wage, it is to be an Employer of Choice. This is far more sustainable long term. Offer something other than money. Offer a work environment that cares, respects and develops its staff. Invest in leadership training, so that Manager’s know how to treat and retain staff. Make it part of their KPI’s.
We’re all facing staff shortages. This is due to a number of reasons - the Pandemic definitely has something to do with it apart from the effect on the economy – but people’s mindsets have changed. For example, employees wanting to relocate or change jobs through the years 2019 to 2021, now feel compelled to do it. Whatever the reason, what we are faced with now is ‘a candidate poor market’. In other words, due to a low supply, we have a high demand for employees.

What about annual leave? If an employee is staying with the business, two main situations arise. Either the annual leave accruals will be transferred across to the new employer and everything will continue as per usual. BHP has made a takeover offer for copper, gold and nickel miner, OZ Minerals (OZL) to increase its copper exposure. The offer was priced at $8.4 billion, or $25 a share, representing a 32% premium to the previous trading price. OZL’s board rejected the offer, saying the price undervalued its highquality copper growth pipeline, low carbon intensity and significant operational synergies. As the largest refined end user, China accounted for 58% of global copper usage last year. Industrial demand in China tightened this year causing copper’s price to drop 20% since its March peak of US$4.66 per pound. As China emerges from covid-related restrictions and launches added policy stimulus, we expect demand and imports to improve. Stimulus specifically will help support demand. Sorry for the ‘clickbait’ but if you have a self-managed super fund (SMSF), you might want to read on… It’s not every day the High Court hands down a decision on superannuation. Clients often haven’t updated their Binding Death Benefit Nominations (BDBN), dictating where their superannuation benefits are to be paid on their death. Before the court’s decision in June, there was uncertainty about whether some specific regulations applied to a SMSF. The court’s decision would dictate if a deceased member’s superannuation would pass to his: (a) de facto spouse (under the fund’s governing rules); or (b) daughter (to an earlier marriage) through the deceased’s Will. The daughter argued the BDBN made by her father in favour of his de facto was invalid as it didn’t comply with certain regulations.Thedefacto argued those regulations didn’tTheapply.court agreed with the de facto. If a SMSF’s governing rules allow, it can avoid some requirements which apply to Retail and Industry Funds. For example, it can have a BDBN that won’t expire and does not need to be witnessed. It is obviously important to regularly review your affairs to ensure your estate plan is current.

There’s something magical about waking up in the morning to a blanket of pristine snow on the ground. Back in March, I was fortunate to experience this and much more in Bergen,Norway.abeautiful walking town, is the starting point for the coastal voyages by cruise line Hurtigruten. Their ships have an average of 220 cabins and showcase delicious Norwegian food. The vibe is casual Scandi. There are no casinos or shows because the emphasis is on learning about the heritage and culture of the country. The ships drop into several ports per day. The tourists look around the town or take a shore excursion. Concurrently, locals embark on the ship to go just a few stops to visit their loved ones in an otherwise isolated village. One night, I played a card game with some young Norwegians. I went to teach them my game only to find out they knew the game under a different name. You travel don’t get the chance to interact with the local people like this very often. The off-ship experiences were fabulous. We kayaked in the harbour of Alesund, a beautiful art deco town. We marvelled at the Gothic cathedral in Trondheim and saw a stunning sunset in the Lofoten Unluckily,Islands.wemissed the northern lights. Ships a few days ahead of us and going south all saw them but that just gives me an excuse to go back. Husky dog sledding out of Tromso was the highlight for me. There is total chaos until the musher says “go”, and then the dogs are off to work. It is something everyone should experience. Hurtigruten really hugs the coast and the scenery is truly spectacular so whether its winter or summer, add this one to your bucket list.

The joint research examining capital cities and using the Australian Bureau of Statistics Consumer Price Index from June 2012 to June 2022 – by property academic, Peter Koulizos, found that rents increased by just 11 per cent nationally over the decade, but inflation rose by 25.6 per cent over the same period.

Despite rental price increases and a supply squeeze creating a new class of homelessness, new industry research has found rents have grown at only half the rate of inflation for more than a decade – even after allowing for the past year’s rent increases and the current inflation spikes.
Mr Cayley says the Sunshine Coast needs 5,500 rental properties today to fix the rental and rising homelessness crisis.
“These rental providers have also been pressured to carry the full financial burden of rising interest rates, new tenancy reforms, eviction moratoriums, land tax reforms, huge and costly delays in tribunal dispute hearings, and yet over the past 10 years, outside of Hobart, rents haven’t been keeping pace with inflation,” Mr Kingsley says. “The current rental crisis is the result of government inaction and market interventions. There is no question that governments, have played the biggest role in the rental supply mess – but, year after year, they expect private rental providers to simply pay more and more.
