In response to the impacts on city water supplies of the Millennium Drought (2001–09), desalination plants were built to supply most of the capital cities. In 2006, Perth residents became the first in Australia to drink desalinated seawater. By 2012, desalination plants had been built to supply Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane. A 2005 poll commissioned by “SCUD” (Sydney Community United against Desalination) found 60 per cent of Sydney residents opposed a desalination plant. The following year, a parliamentary inquiry concluded such a plant would not be needed if the government pursued water recycling and reuse strategies. The plant was still built. The Victorian government also faced a backlash when it announced in 2007 a privately financed plant near Wonthaggi on the Bass Coast. Completed in 2012, the plant was mothballed until 2017. In 2011, the Productivity Commission found only desalination infrastructure was justified.

City residents have come to expect abundant water from sources they perceive as “pure”: dams, aquifers and desalination. Continuing down this path is not sustainable. Yet, once again, a state government looks set to pursue the costly, energy-intensive desalination option. Desalination has been a reassuring project in times of crisis, but has not always proven its value.

Our new book, Cities in a Sunburnt Country, traces the fraught history with recycled water in Australia’s biggest cities. A focus on expanding capacity to extract or produce more potable water has dominated urban water policy in Australia.

Other projects could have been deferred, made smaller or replaced by lower-cost sources, including recycled water. During the Millennium Drought, the Beattie government built the Brisbane Water Grid, connecting all major dams in southeast Queensland. By 2008, the 600km network of pipelines was connected to the

A battle is brewing in southeast Queensland over water. Despite heavy rains and flooding, the Seqwater supply authority has flagged the need to find more water sources to keep up with urban growth.

A$2.9 billion Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme. The state-owned desalination plant at Tugun on the Gold Coast was completed a year later. Queensland had opted for a desal ‘quick fix’. The government went down the high-cost, high-energy and high-emissions road, instead of more sustainable approaches to potable water supplies and climate change. Southeast Queensland’s population and water use continue to grow, yet the recycled water scheme only provides the resource for industry. Cities worldwide, including Los Angeles, Singapore and London, commonly use recycled wastewater to add to drinking water supplies. Most residents of Australian cities are also drinking some treated wastewater. Hinterland towns discharge treated wastewater into rivers that eventually flow into dams such as Warragamba and Wivenhoe (supplying Sydney and Brisbane respectively). In 2018, the Productivity Commission’s National Water Reform Report recommended an integrated approach that included reusing urban wastewater and/or stormwater. Implementation has been slow, however. Only one Australian capital has officially overcome the yuck factor. Perth stores treated wastewater in aquifers beneath the suburbs before returning it to the city’s taps. The stateowned Water Corporation’s 50-year plan, Water Forever, includes a 60 per cent increase in wastewater recycling. But the state’s main strategy for eliminating the gap between future water demand and supply is desalination, despite strong community support for large-scale recycling. In Adelaide and Brisbane, wastewater and stormwater are treated and reused only for industry, irrigation and energy production. As the Millennium Drought fades from public memory, state governments have retreated from attempts to encourage household water tanks. By 2050, as many as 10 million extra people may live in Australia’s capital cities, and all of them will expect a reliable supply of clean water inside and outside their homes. Our book shows how governments have historically favoured development of new water sources or desalination over recycling or demand management. These approaches do little to help us learn to use water more wisely in our cities and suburbs. Recycled water, education campaigns and demand management must play a greater role in securing future water supplies.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has already expressed a preference for building a desalination plant on the Sunshine Coast instead of using recycled water. Perhaps her government wants to avoid a repeat of the divisive 2006 debate over water recycling in Toowoomba – dubbed “Poowoomba” at the time.

Climate change is causing flowers to change colour. A 2020 study, led by Clemson University scientists, determined that the UV pigmentation in flowers has increased over time, leading to the degradation of their pollen. Although we can’t see the colour change with our eyes, it is a big problem for pollinators, including bees, which are attracted to flowers’ bright hues.

In the days before modern broadband and 4G networks, at the initial birth of the internet, we connected to the World Wide Web via analogue and dial-up modems. These marvels of technology required an open phone line and plenty of patience. If anyone called while you were connected to the ’net, then you’d immediately lose connection. Browsing the web was slow and painful, but it was a thing of beauty and showed promise for the future that we now live in.

Speaking of its incredible longevity, festival director Richie Eyles tells My Weekly Preview the Caloundra Music Festival has grown from its humble beginnings to what everyone has come to love and know today. The festival has had to navigate changes and growth, not to mention the COVID pandemic and keeping relevant to its diverse audience.

Sunshine Coast Council division two councillor Terry Landsberg says residents should feel proud of the growth of the festival, which was established as a one-day event in 2007. It is now worth more than $3 million each year in terms of economic and tourism benefits for the Sunshine Coast.

“Last year, we felt, was successful,” Mr From its humble beginnings 15 years ago, the annual Caloundra Music Festival has become one of Queensland’s most-loved music events – a celebration of live performance, fresh food, the arts and WORDS:community.CaitlinZerafa.

Queensland and it really changed the look and feel of our festival. “It was almost like reverting back to our roots and how we started.”

The event also serves as a not-for-profit community festival. As its major fundraiser for 2022, Caloundra State Primary School is providing camping facilities during the weekend on the school grounds.

One of the region’s most loved festivals is celebrating 15 years of bringing music to the ears of thousands of people.

“That’s an enduring legacy which continues to benefit our community,” Cr Landsberg says. “We had fantastic support from Queenslanders last year, while border restrictions hindered both performers and punters in numerous ways when it came to travel and events. This year is a different story. The lineup is strong and we look forward to welcoming back interstate performers and attendees.”

This year the beachside festival is on from September 30 to October 1 and will bring with it three days of sun, surf and soul. The diverse lineup of entertainment will feature the best of the Australian music industry and include names such as Missy Higgins, Baker Boy, The Presents and The Rolling Stones Revue. A key focus of the festival is to bring a broad audience of locals and visitors together to enjoy a celebration of worldclass music, food, arts and local culture.

From little things bigthings grow

“The whole industry has been turned on its head in the past two years and we have had to make some really serious changes in that time to get by.

“Last year we did not know if we were going to go ahead or if we could get bands here. We could only have bands that were in

Each year the Caloundra Music Festival fills Kings Beach with a melody of sounds and a stellar lineup of musicians – from international stars to local talents.

Mr Eyles says the festival aims to offer a diverse lineup to attract people of all ages and music taste and expose them to artists they might not usually see.

The festival has had to navigate changes and growth… and keep relevant to its diverse audience about being family-friendly, which means you have to appeal to a broad cross section and I think that’s what we are known for. “Even if they don’t know all the music on the list, they are not necessarily all household names, but we like people coming and going, ‘I don’t know those names’ and then they see them and become fans. “It’s about exposing people to what they haven’t seen before rather than the same lineup of acts every year.” The festival is also an important platform for local acts to receive a “leg up” in the industry and Mr Eyles says this year’s lineup includes more than 30 Sunshine Coast musicians. “I think that’s very unique. We try to give them that leg up and put them on the big stage. They can go on and say they played at Caloundra Music Festival alongside bands like Powderfinger.” Sunshine Coast talent will include Hayden Hack, JaZZella, Mason Hope and The Teachers, Sugarbag Blonde and Sunny Coast Rude Boys to name a few. Keeping the reduced footprint and layout adopted in 2021, this year the venue will offer an intimate music experience.

10 myweeklypreview.com.auMy Weekly Preview | September 8, 2022

“It’s significant that is has lasted for that long,” he says. “A lot of festivals start up and don’t last this long. We are learning to adapt to a changing musical climate.

Eyles says. “We don’t quite feel like it’s back to life like it was pre-pandemic, but we hope the punters have the confidence to come and enjoy it again and soak it up and appreciate the diversity of the lineup and the fact we have so many local acts on.”

Now, the five-time chart topper and nine-time ARIA Award winner is headed to Caloundra as one of the headline acts in this year’s festival lineup. As part of the 2022 CMF a new initiative will see festival’s artists perform throughout the community in the month-long lead up to the main event. It comes as this year’s festival lineup include more than 30 locals acts. The CMF spotlight program is designed to extend the reach of CMF deeper into the Sunshine Coast region in the lead-up to the annual beachside event. The program began on August 27 with performances at the inaugural That’s Not My Dog Festival and at Norton Music Factory at Caloundra West. Four free performances are happening in the coming weeks so the general community can catch local talent at smaller gigs before they hit the CMF stage.

A passionate aviator, Mr Moffatt served during the Vietnam War as an army pilot with the 161st ReconnaissanceIndependentFlight, and later as one of the army’s top helicopter instructors. Sometime later, he leveraged his knowledge in this field – along with his big heart – to help found Australia’s first helicopter rescue service, now known as LifeFlight.MrMoffatt’s passion for aviation and the community saw him serve as the chair of the former Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service for 15 years. He then served as former deputy chair and non-executive director of LifeFlight Australia, after the services merged. The local rescue helicopter service – to which he dedicated so much of his life –has airlifted thousands of people in need across the Sunshine Coast, Gympie, Fraser Coast and South Burnett regions. In 2017, Mr Moffatts’ name was printed on the side of the first AW139 helicopter to be based at the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue base. LifeFlight Australia board chair Rob Borbidge (AO) says the dedicated and passionate member of the Sunshine Coast community was one of the pioneers of aeromedical helicopter services in Queensland.Hesaysthe air force veteran’s legacy will always be honoured at the Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue base, as his experience, expertise and leadership significantly helped shaped the service into what it is today. “As chair of the Sunshine Coast Helicopter Rescue Service, and following its merger with LifeFlight, Don played a pivotal role in providing this service to the Sunshine Coast and across Queensland,” Mr Borbidge says. “His enthusiasm and commitment remained strong even as he battled ill health. We extend to his wife Bridget and his family our sincere condolences and our gratitude for his service.”

eartfelt tributes are flowing after the passing of Don Moffatt (AM) – “the boy from Kingaroy” – who became a business giant and helicopter rescue pioneer.MrMoffatt passed away on the evening of August 11 and his life was celebrated by family and friends on August 26 at Gregson

Sunshine Coast stalwart Don Moffatt will be remembered for his big-hearted contribution to the community.

Mr Moffatt was also recognised in 2017 with a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Australia Day honours list for his significant contributions to helicopter rescue services in Queensland and the horse racing industry.

Spring has sprung, and with it comes magpie breeding season. Residents are being asked to remain tolerant of defensive birds over the coming months. Sunshine Coast Council officer Kate Hofmeister says while magpies will often stay in one area for up to 20 years, only 10 per cent of breeding males will swoop. Male magpies swoop to defend their young from when hatching begins until the chicks leave the nest, which is usually six to eight weeks. Ms Hofmeister suggests dismounting bikes or walking in groups when in nesting areas or avoiding them all together.

Work has begun on the long-awaited connection from one of the Coast’s fastest-growing housing estates to the Bruce Highway. The road will link Harmony at Palmview with the national highway after the state government facilitated a solution. It came after years of complaints from residents with Peter Crosby Way the only way in and out of the booming estate. The agreed works will include a future Southern Road Link connection to Racecourse Road as well as the connection to the Bruce Highway from Palmview, which is expected to be completed in mid-2023.

He is also extremely familiar with the notoriously steep and windy stretch of road where the accident occurred, which he rode with mates each week. Roadworks in the area that day left the bitumen wet and dirty and, while slowing down as he rounded the corner, something went wrong and Mr Patton collided with an oncoming car. “Mick has no memory of the impact, so we don’t know exactly what happened,” Mr Patton’s wife Kerrie says. “I think he swerved to miss something just as a car came around the bend. His bike only clipped the side, but it was enough to do a lot of damage.”

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

Paramedics rushed to the scene to begin treatment, while the Sunshine Coast-based rescue helicopter was called into action. The road was not suitable for landing on, so the pilot set down at Montville State School oval to met the paramedics and transport Mr Patton. Mr Patton was in a critical condition, suffering a brain bleed, a broken neck in two places, nine broken ribs, two broken vertebrae in his spine and several broken fingers and toes. He says the neck injuries were serious enough that he could have become paraplegic or even lost his life. “I’m a lucky man. Without the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue service, I wouldn’t be here – I know that,” he says. Mr Patton was flown to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and rushed into the intensive care unit. To his doctors’ surprise, his recovery was rapid and he walked out of hospital 10 days later with only a neck brace. “He absolutely defied all the odds –they didn’t think he would pull through,” Mrs Patton says. Next week, the Pattons will put their passion for long-distance walking to good use, embarking on a mammoth walk to raise vital funds for the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue service. On September 13, they will walk from Palmwoods to SCUH – the equivalent of the 29 kilometres the helicopter flew with Mr Patton on board. “It shows you what the body can do, but really, it’s down to the guys that looked after me – from the crew on board the helicopter, to the QAS paramedics and the hospital staff. I’m forever grateful,” he says. “You’ve got to try to give something back – we can’t take things like this service for granted.”

POLICE TALK

The Queensland Police Service is dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of keeping all children safe through Child Protection Week, which runs from September 4-10. Kawana Waters State College (KWSC) school-based police officer Senior Constable Sarah Harding has teamed up with school staff, personal trainer Josh Milne, from JMT, and community members to implement a program for students called The Blue EDGE. The program has been developed by Blue Light Queensland. It is a well-being program that is physically designed to extend a young person’s mind and physical capability. Blue Edge for fitness and life skills involves interactive mentoring and life skills sessions delivered by police officers and community role models. Each group will be made up of a mixture of at-risk young people and participants who display leadership qualities. The aim of this cross-section is to promote positive behaviours and attitudes, instilling a positive mindset into students regarded as at-risk. The program aims to empower young people, reduce youth crime and build positive relationships between police and young people to achieve personal goals.

FASHION PARADE FOR THE AGES

The bar staff were confused as they couldn’t figure out why the glasses and stubbies on the cabinet shelves on the outside wall of the cold rooms were rattling. How times have changed. I’m not sure they would even have the paper work these days to cover that risk assessment. The opinions expressed are those of the authors. These are not the views of My Weekly Preview publishers.

These types of events naturally involve hordes of people. That means some roads are closed. Parking places are sometimes lost. Parklands are occupied and businesses are affected. All these things happen for a small window of time and the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

CRASH COURSE IN RISK MANAGEMENT

Today’s world of risk management, possible litigation and inductions for every possible situation is so far removed from what I started with only a few decades ago – well, more than a few. I was talking to a mate the other day who was volunteering for something. He had to arrive the day before to do an induction and sign a disclaimer, and then stand in the sun for free the next day for nine hours. Wow! It got me thinking about my riskmanagement skills in the ’70s when I was working at the Maroochy Airport for East West Airlines. One day, my boss got a fax asking some safety questions in case of a crash. Was there a hydrant close by? He ticked ‘yes’. I asked where and he pointed to a garden Imaginehose.ifaplane crashed back then. I would have been trying to put it out with a hose while waiting for a fire truck from Maroochydore. What could have possibly gone wrong? Then in the ’90s, when I was running Mooloolaba Hotel and it had a faulty electrical switchboard. Every time a touring band came with three-phase power requirements, I had to turn off air-conditioning and cold rooms around the pub so it didn’t blow. That wasn’t great in summer with more than 1000 people in the room. This went on for years until one New Year’s Eve, with about 5000 people in the pub, the switchboard blew. Lights out! SEQEB, the electrical authority back then, came by and wasn’t sure what to do. But a mate of mine who worked for them said he could get the power back on by midnight and if he did, could he take his girlfriend into the cold room behind the bar in the band room? I had no choice: a big ‘yes’ from me. He managed to get that job done and we sprang back into life at 11.55pm –exactly an hour after it went pear shaped. He then got on with the other job ...

Tthe music. The display of human endeavours in all their glory. I love the Sunshine Coast’s big events. I love that people come here from far and wide to watch and be part of them. The Horizon Festival has peppered our region with a multitude of cultural and creative experiences. It has given our dancers and singers a chance to strut their stuff on a big stage and talented visual artists a forum to show their wares. It has allowed us to see big-name artists live. The recent Sunshine Coast Marathon festival and the upcoming Sunshine Coast Ironman 70.3 showcase the mettle of those who can move and endure physically and mentally. They show others what it looks like to rise to the challenge, to show guts and go for personal glory.

Big events foster community pride, teach us new things and draw together local service providers and community stakeholders. Accommodation uptake surges, local restaurants swell, tourist attractions burst and social media posts trumpet about how gorgeous it is here. It is all good practice for 2032 when the biggest show of all, the Olympics, comes to town. And when the dust settles and another big event has finished, the crowds leave again. We, the lucky ones, get to stay on in this paradise we call home.

Jane Stephens trumpets the benefits of our diverse calendar of events that showcases the Coast’s talented locals and natural beauty to the world.

Ashley Robinson fondly remembers the days when things were done swiftly and efficiently, without litigation or the need for disclaimers.

My hands get sore and my eyes misty as I clap and cheer streetside at these events, which pass close to my home. These premier sporting events feature a handful of elite athletes and it is awe-inspiring to watch them move with breathtaking speed and elegance. But mostly, they are populated by thousands of everyday people of all shapes and sizes just giving it their very best crack. An independent assessment released by the council deemed that last year’s Ironman 70.3 brought $3.52 million in direct and indirect economic benefit to the Sunshine Coast – and that was in the middle of the pandemic uncertainty. This year’s event is bigger and better.

ARE YOU READY TO CARE?

How great is Julia Roberts? I instantly loved ‘Vivian’, the feisty red-headed hustler with a heart of gold, when her megawatt smile lit up the screen in Pretty Woman in 1990. Roberts was everything: part-best friend in my mind, and partaspirational Hollywood heart-throb. The story of ‘Vivian’ and ‘Edward’ falling in love in a fancy hotel and playing polo in polka dots had me totally smitten. It was probably really inappropriate for a 17-year-old to have a hooker as her hero, but I could quote every line from that movie. My husband and I once snuck into that very hotel, just so I could go into the lift and say the line ... let’s just say that with the eye rolling we received, we weren’t the only ones to do it. And don’t get me started on the soundtrack that I would play over and over again on my cassette machine in my bedroom as I belted out Roxette’s It Must Have Been Love. I even had a copy of the red ball dress made for my Grade 12 formal as I was trying to emulate the gown ‘Vivian’ wore to the opera. It was a very bad knock-off and my mum had a serious car accident picking up the dodgy dress the night before my formal that landed her in hospital for six months. So, my big night was a total disaster and non-event. All these memories are swirling around the front of my mind this week as there is a new Julia Roberts movie coming out this month called Ticket to Paradise. Run, people! Do not walk! Julia is making her triumphant return to the rom-com world and stars with Georgeflipping-Clooney. Yep. Now do you understand my excitement about the release of what is surely going to be hilarious and stars two of the most genetically blessed humans on this planet? Surely, Ticket to Paradise will emulate the genius of My Best Friend’s Wedding or the pure sweetness of Notting Hill. Tom Cruise proved in Top Gun: Maverick that age is no deterrent from making the past formula work. But then again, the latest version of Sex and the City was about as well received as a Melbourne lockdown. OMG, I just don’t know! Hit or flop? Well, I actually do know that if it’s a hit, “I told you so”. If it’s not, “I booked tickets, but my daughter was vomiting so I couldn’t go. I’ll stream it when I have time in the school holidays. I hear it’s good though”. Sorry, Julia: credibility saved I WANT THE FAIRY TALE, TOO Sami Muirhead hopes a celebrity fave is on another winner in her latest rom-com, giving fans their ‘ticket to paradise’, Hollywood style.

KIDS, CULTURE AND THE CITY

Brisbane has gone voco, and it is the perfect location for a mini break these school holidays. WORDS: Candice Holznagel. Dipping my feet into the refreshing blue water, I feel the warm sun wash over my face. For a brief moment in time I forget that southeast Queensland is experiencing one of its coldest, and what feels like the longest, winters in years. On this particular August day, the sky is clear above the river city and I don’t hesitate to take advantage of the rooftop pool terrace at the all-new voco Brisbane City Centre hotel. It has been a few months since my last visit to the city and the view that surrounds is a welcome sight – high-rise buildings set against the backdrop of the crisp blue sky. I may choose to live by the beach, but

STAYING THERE Located on North Quay, voco Brisbane City Centre offers a range of accommodation including standard, premium and onebedroom suites. With a pull-out sofa, living space and large separate bedroom, the suite perfectly catered for our young family. The kids loved the views across the river to South Bank Parklands, while I was a fan of the fluffy bathrobe and flatscreen with built-in Chromecast capability. Bliss. GREENWOODRICHARDIMAGE: every now and then I feel the pull of the hustle and bustle of the city – its cultural offerings, the bars and endless dining options, the noise and the vibe. Brisbane’s newest hotel, voco, is smack bang in the centre of the relaxed metropolis. Perched on the river, it provides easy access to the cultural and familyfriendly South Bank Parklands, and entrance to the urban city. Launched in June, it is the first voco brand for Brisbane and only the second for Queensland (if you haven’t yet, be sure to check out the Gold Coast property, which is a short stroll from Surfers Paradise beach). Offering 194 rooms, all with extra-cushy bedding, vibrant art and smart in-room technology, plus a funky downstairs bar and that terrific rooftop pool, it is the ideal gateway to your city escape.

Visit the iconic Stockman’s Hall of Fame Museum and Qantas Founders Museum. A paddle steamer on the Thompson River is an ideal way to enjoy the sunset in Longreach, followed by the poetry of the bush as a campfire blazes. Air Safaris offers an all-inclusive, small-group adventure from start to end, and while Lake Eyre is a highlight of this trip, it is not the only wonder outback. Imagine seeing St George, Cunnamulla, Noccundra, Arkaroola, the Flinders Ranges, William Creek, Birdsville, Big Red, Winton and Longreach – all in six days and with only 12 hours of travel. That is the beauty of an air safari: you can avoid hours of endless unsealed roads. Plus, there are ever-changing landscapes which can only be seen from the air to be fully appreciated.

You are moving over a lake that shows not a ripple and is a perfect reflection of the sky above as the sun rises from the horizon.Yougaze into the distance and are confronted by the stark red of a harsh desert landscape. Such is the scenery as you fly over Lake Eyre on an air safari. Your pilot is a passionate flyer, who loves the changing landscape below. He knows just when and where to go to give you the best images both for your camera and your memories.

The night sky is fantastic – another highlight of Arkaroola where the town’s telescopes can unlock the heavens. Take the 4WD ridge tour and cruise through the ancient rocks of the Flinders Ranges. Standing on the Big Red sand dune, marvel at those who came before you by horse and on foot. Get ‘stomped on’ by a sauropod dinosaur in Winton, if you dare.

The coronavirus pandemic showed us we were on the wrong track to developing sustainable tourism. Reduced mobility and border closures stopped the world, pushing many to think about the present and future of tourism. The visitor economy can rely on regenerative tourism to ensure it’s resilient to future crises. Regenerative tourism creates a meaningful balance between local culture, natural ecosystems, hosts and guests. It aims to improve the community holistically, rather than minimising the impact of tourism. The idea is to leave the place better than you found it. Food plays a major role in this. Every destination has a distinct culinary heritage behind unique gastronomic experiences. Food tourism allows travellers to discover a place through their cuisines while building meaningful connections and a deeper understanding of local culture. As tourism is shaped by the values of the people who work in it, a conscious supply of these elements will lead to a conscious demand. New Zealand has largely promoted regenerative tourism based on indigenous values focused on the Tiaki Promise where both locals and visitors are urged “to act as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home”. For example, local tour groups like The Seventh Generation, develop experiences based on the Maori principles of respect for culture and nature. If businesses are committed to the environment, visitors will also build lasting ties to the destination by learning from local practices. There are few places in the world that almost wholly focus on food-based regenerative tourism. Furanchos, for example, are private homes in Galicia, Spain, used as food establishments for only three months a year. It began with the idea of sharing local wine and food with friends, family and visitors. Agricultural activity remains the central element of the local economy but the furanchos are where winemakers sell surplus artisanal wine and traditional dishes. Strict legal regulations only allow it to open and serve a limited number of dishes, making it naturally sustainable. Farm-to-table eating experiences are an important element in regenerative tourism. Relying on local resources contributes to the local economy and fosters shorter supply chains — helping local farmers, growers and fishermen instead of relying on large industries. It significantly reduces the amount of waste and contributes to less greenhouse gases. Regenerative food tourism experiences engage people with local cultures, for example, by learning how to cook indigenous recipes, and with nature, including picking their own ingredients from a Foodforest.plays a pivotal role in destination management and marketing, and as part of people’s travel decisions. After all, food remains at the core of humanity’s identity and survival, so it’s time more tourism destinations catch up with this notion.

CHOOSE RIGHT When choosing outdoor furniture, consider the location and possible exposure to the elements. This will determine the quality of product you buy, as well as the type of material. The beauty of wood continues to be a popular choice, but be sure to purchase products constructed from hardwood to guarantee longevity. Metal, such as aluminium, is also a favourite, due to its weather-resistant and hard-wearing nature. Synthetic wicker is another product we love. Not only does it look great, but it also is weather resistant. w hook in white from C Store, Cotton Tre we love Way).

“People often underestimate the power of paint as a cost-effective and impactful way to jazz up a space,” Ms Lucena-Orr says.

Settling on Dulux Harmonious in Wash&Wear as the backdrop colour for the wall panelling, Ms Leech breathed life and creativity into the space with the furnishings and accessories to finish the look. “Letting the Wonder palette inspire me, I’ve added new chairs painted with Dulux Plunder in Aquanamel, a new rug and lots of colourful vessels to fill with flowers.”

HOME STYLE

“The cut-out feature was serving no real purpose and the dining area itself just felt a bit flat.” Wanting to create a happier space that would make the immediate and extended family want to collectively gather for meals and quality time, she acquired fluted panels for the wall – to cover the cut-out feature – and headed straight to Dulux to select colours from the latest trends.

Dulux colour and communications manager Andrea Lucena-Orr says customising interiors doesn’t need to include major renovations to achieve a stylish look that’s uniquely ‘you’.

hen it comes to customising your home interiors to make them feel more ‘you’, most renters can feel a bit lost with their design plans, unsure of what they can do without the property owner’s permission. And it’s not just the renters who can feel deterred: first-time owners or novice decorators can also be overwhelmed. However, cosmetic changes to home dwellings are more achievable than most people think and can be executed on a budget with just a little know-how.

With a little know-how, a splash of paint and plenty of creativity, you can brighten any home.

“I chose colours from the HarmoniousDulux PlunderDulux Wonder palette for this space as they best represent my personal style. The palette is fun and joyful.”

“Additionally, colour can be introduced in a number of ways to help tailor and refresh interiors, all whilst keeping the structure and integrity of the home intact.” To show how impactful colour can be, Dulux trend forecaster and stylist Bree Leech undertook a room makeover in her own rental property using colours from the 2022 Dulux Colour Forecast.

“Our dining room had a feature that didn’t work for us and I’d wanted to fix for some time,” she says. “It was a neutral space that had a cut-out in the wall so you could look through to the adjoining room.

“It allows you to customise your own scheme and feature your favourite shades in larger proportions, but then add smaller amounts of the complementary colours from the palette in accessories and soft furnishings, like fabric prints and artwork, to create a cohesive look.”

But since being supported by Carers Queensland’s Local Area Coordination Partner in the Community Program to access the NDIS, Michael’s life has completely changed. He receives help with meal preparation and transport to appointments, as well as health treatments such as physiotherapy and psychology. Importantly, Michael is able to leave the house. “Most of my life is spent inside doing home physio or resting,” he says. Enabling people living with disabilities to more freely get out and about – living – with greater independence, was the key purpose behind establishing Carers That Drive in 2009. Today, that still underpins its Queensland services.

Suzie Coghlan, managing director at Carers That Drive, says that it’s a pleasure to be able to provide people from all walks of life with the opportunity to participate in their community and have some freedoms –often otherwise affected by disability. “Being able to get to medical appointments, school and work, access day services, participate in social outings, are so important for a full life,” Ms Coghlan says. “We have a wonderful team, who are matched to participants, and provide NDIS accredited support to enable this to happen.” Based on the Sunshine Coast, Carers That Drive offer services throughout the region, including the hinterland, down to Brisbane, and other locations by request. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices are an assistive technology that can help with communication and improve independence.Forchildren with speech difficulties, AAC devices provide an alternative method of communication. No matter whether your child is using a low-tech or high-tech device, their speech therapist is your main resource to help develop their AAC skills. But there is plenty families can do at home as well. Ensure your child’s device is within reach at all times and keep it charged. Bring it to the dinner table, have it next to them on the sofa, prop it on a chair in the bathroom. If your child can physically access their device easily, you’re on the right track to actually getting them to use it. A child will most likely have one key communication partner but everyone in the household can model and respond when they use the device. Go to www.leapin.com.au.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23) This week’s celestial salad throws some frustration into the mix, as your ruler, Mercury, is retrograde which slows things down, especially financially. So your stress levels could venture into the outer stratosphere. Calm down, Virgo.

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20) This week Mercury is retrograde and Neptune opposes the sun, which could rev up your restless side and amplify your tendency to become confused or distracted. So be extra careful when walking near traffic, driving, cycling or jogging, and hold off on important decisions.

Expect some relationship rumbles this week, rams, as Mercury reverses through your love zone and a partnership may feel as if it’s going backwards. Generous Jupiter encourages you to get the ratio right between your personal needs and those of loved ones.

With Mercury reversing through your self-sabotage zone, the only person who’s likely to undermine your efforts this week is you. The best way to utilise the current astro energy is to turn inward in positive ways, via solo activities like meditation, prayer and yoga.

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)

TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21) Taurus is a fixed sign and bulls can be a very stubborn bunch. Mercury is reversing through your job, well-being, and daily habits zones for the next three weeks. So prepare for work chaos, health hiccups or disruptions to your usual routine.

GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21) Is a cherished dream taking forever to manifest? Forget about airy-fairy fantasies. Jupiter and Saturn encourage you to set a solid and achievable goal and then work towards it in a patient and persistent way. Resist the temptation to be overindulgent.

Beauty-loving Librans are famous for being natural fashionistas. This week, with Mercury reversing through your sign, you want your innate elegance and sense of style to shine for all the world to see. But don’t become overly preoccupied with glossy outer appearances.

As fiery Mars squares Venus, do your best to avoid being hasty and hot-headed. And steer clear of argumentative people, especially at work. A goal or dream could also be delayed or derailed, so you may have to reboot your wish list or just be extra patient. CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20) Capricorns are feeling frustrated and cranky. With Mercury reversing through your career zone, it’s not a good time to apply for a job, pitch for a promotion or launch a project. Instead, focus your attention on a romantic relationship, business partnership or creative joint venture. AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

With taskmaster Saturn moving through your sign, you may feel as if you are failing to live up to your full potential. And this week, retrograde Mercury also disrupts travel or education plans. Don’t stress, Aquarius. Mistakes will just motivate you even more.

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23) It’s a good week to review plans and complete tasks. Professional projects and creative networking are also favoured. But retrograde Mercury is stirring up your domestic zone. So, over the next three weeks, prepare for a domestic drama or a family fiasco.

LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23) Hold your horses, lions! Mercury is in retrograde mode so, if you are too hasty, you’ll run into obstacles. You also need to be extra careful when you’re communicating, if you say or write something when you’re feeling rushed, it could backfire on you later.

HOW HOME BUYERS ARE FINDING A WAY INTO PRIZED SUBURBS

As prices remain high for modern homes in prime locations, prospective buyers are exploring alternative options to get their foot in the door. They’re turning to older houses in suburbs like Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Buderim, to claim their place near the growing city centre and the beach.

Looking for Jo Ann Davies

The 680sqm property at 28 Anthony Avenue was offered to the market for the first time since 1980.

There were several registered bidders at auctions for decades-old homes there in recent days. The owner/director at McCarthy & Co Property, Leigh McCarthy, sold an original, low-set cottage in Maroochydore on Sunday, for $942,000.

She managed a Laundromat in Noosa.

“I find the older homes (in these suburbs) are quite popular because they’re more affordable and it gets the buyers into a great location,” Ms McCarthy says.

Another old home, in a stunning location at Buderim, is expected to sell this week, after being passed in at auction. The threebedroom, three-bathroom home, on 1616sqm at 6 Coolum View Terrace, came on to the market for the first time in almost 30 years. It boasts northerly-facing ocean views. “There was heaps of interest in this one,” principal at Prime Property Sunshine Coast Brenden Southey says. The property is under offer to some nearby residents, who are looking to move higher up the street for better views.

Two years ago, I happened to paddle across what appeared to be three humpbacks with calves feeding in a circle off the beach. You could just see them above the water line. I simply sat down on my board quietly and watched in amazement as a pod of dolphins swam between them. Pretty cool. Enjoy the weekend!
