ustralians overwhelmingly want governments to splash cash on a fast transition to green transport options that will save them money and fight climate change, a national survey shows.
The top reasons people gave for wanting electric buses powered by renewables included improved air quality, reduced dependence on foreign oil, and lowering Australia’s use of fossil fuels.
“People’s resilience is really being tested. That’s why we’re out there as early as this, trying to let people know about what we’re facing.”
It’s more like $12,000 for those who cycle or walk to work.
Easing hip pocket pain is one of them, with Australians who commute via public transport standing to save $8000 a year compared with car travel.
Parts of Australia’s east coast that are still cleaning up after widespread flooding earlier this year are being warned to prepare for more deluges.
“They are looking at that whole picture and saying, ‘You know what? I’m ready to do something else’.
“What’s missing is the investment from government that will support them to doDrthat.”Rayner says there’s a national imperative to decarbonise the transport sector – the second-largest source of Australia’s carbon emissions, behind power
A YouGov poll of 2160 Australians, that was commissioned by the Climate Council, found 80 per cent want more investment in public transport and 70 per cent want an electric national bus fleet powered by solar and wind energy as soon as Two-thirdspossible.of poll respondents also want more footpaths and bike lanes to encourage emissions-free private transport. The Climate Council head of advocacy Jennifer Rayner says Australians clearly grasp the full suite of benefits that green transport will provide.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared a third La Nina in a row for Australia’s east coast and forecast further rainfall and inundation.
Dr Rayner says Australia’s lack of fuel-efficiency standards is a big hurdle that must be overcome if the nation is to slash its transport-related emissions.
“Australians are really struggling with cost of living pressures, and rising fuel
“Big manufacturers sold about one million cars into the Australian fleet last year and the majority of those were dirtier and less efficient than the ones they sold overseas because we don’t have fuelefficiency standards,” she says.

prices are at the top of that pile,” Dr Rayner says. “It’s clear from this survey that Australians are thinking about how they move around, the role it has on our climate, on the congestion in our cities, and on our health through air pollution.
Earlier this month, Energy and Climate Minister Chris Bowen announced plans for a discussion paper to develop electric vehicles strategy that will range over options for the introduction of fuel-efficiency standards. – AAP.
Fuelling a case for greener transport
“Areas where we have seen flooding in Queensland and NSW over the last couple of years unfortunately are again faced with the risk of more,” Senator Watt told ABC
A new national poll indicates Aussies want the government to provide greater investment and incentives to get people moving in more fuel-efficient, emissions-free ways in future.
“If we can get people out of their cars and onto a clean, quiet electric bus, or onto walking and riding their bikes for their commutes, then we’ll be making a huge difference to all of those individual car trips.”Thetop reasons respondents offered
“Getting those standards in place is a really important policy lever to incentivise manufacturers to bring more electric vehicles to Australia.”
Emergency Management Minister Murray Watt said plans for further mitigation measures had begun in areas at risk of flooding, as some communities continued to bounce back from earlier natural disasters.

Ms Hicks says neurodivergent people have been suffering trauma most of their lives and she hopes to use the Sunshine Coast Community Awards to heighten awareness. “My nomination helps shine a spotlight on how we, firstly, can evolve how we speak about and support all neurodivergent adults and children – being a brain difference that requires different supports to thrive into happy, healthy adults, as opposed to the pathological, deficit view that leads to devastating consequences,” she says.

we do. Findings in a study by Flinders University PhD student Joshua McGreen reveal that those who experience soft drink cravings tend to drink more of it, which is not the same for coffee or water.
My take is a bit similar to agent Fox Mulder, of TV’s X Files: “We must ask ourselves … are they truly a hoax? Are we truly alone or are we being lied to?”. So in my view, it doesn’t make much difference whether it’s an alien or a hairy big foot: they could be out there.
That was the theory anyway and as a kid, I was forever looking for the big cat in the bush. I was sure I saw one a couple of times, plus some footprints as well. In reality, I probably saw a really big feral cat with unusually large feet, but I was happy to go with the big cat theory. I am not sure what would have happened if it was true and I actually found a panther lurking in the bush. A change of underwear definitely would have been required.
You want it and you chug it and then you have some more. Soft drinks turn off the ‘enough’ button in our brains. We pour in the liquid kilojoules and the brain still tells us to eat normally as well.

teeth and often leave you still thirsty. But somehow soft drinks continue to be a go-to beverage and avoid serious personal scrutiny, much less social rejection.
SOFTHARDOPTION’SFACTS
Jane Stephens realises there’s no way to sweeten the consequences of consuming too much of a go-to beverage that is a $3.8 billion industry.
The study of 100,000 adults in France found those who consumed regular amounts of aspartame had a higher risk of stroke. And those who consumed sucralose have a higher risk of heart disease. So, let’s give soft drinks – whether they be regular, low-sugar or pretend sugar – the heave-ho.
The opinions expressed are those of the authors. These are not the views of My Weekly Preview publishers.
Soft drinks are the single largest source of kilojoules in the Australian diet and are the biggest-selling item by volume in our nation’s supermarkets.
an interesting story on the sunshinecoastnews.com.au website the other week about a yowie hunter from down Caboolture way. He has started a Facebook site that has thousands of contributors who are certain there are yowies out there – even to the point where he was talking about big ones and little ones, not just vagaries about whether they are out there or not.
Studies have verified that if a person were to drink a single can of soft drink every day and change nothing else in their diet, they would gain more than two kilos a year. The average soft drink contains a whopping 10 teaspoons of sugar, so it is little

There was actually another folklore story when I was a kid, surrounding the man who owned the farm before Dad.
And what do they give us? Nothing much at all – no micro nutrients or muscle builders, blood cleaners or mood soothers: just more sugar than our bodies can process in one glassful.
NOTHING ALIEN ABOUT YOWIES
Softwonder.drinks are a gobsmacking $3.8 billion a year industry in Australia.
Ashley Robinson knows the truth is out there but it’s more fun to believe folklore stories about a hairy big foot and panthers lurking in the bush.
It should have no place in our diet when we can turn a tap and enjoy as much fresh, healthy, zero-kilojoule, mineral-rich, life-giving water as we want.
ARE YOU READY TO CARE? we need everyday superheroes to help children reach their full potential
And don’t think those ‘non-sugar’ sugars are a good workaround: authoritative research published in the British Medical Journal this month adds to mounting evidence that artificial sweeteners may be just as harmful to your health as sugar, but in a different way.
that a circus came through town and one of its trucks rolled over. A couple of big cats got away and were living and breeding in the scrub around Eudlo.

All this talk of Yowies and things reminds me of growing up in Eudlo when there used to be big cat sightings. It was a black panther, apparently. The story goes
The man apparently had buried all his cash on the farm somewhere before he died. I spent a lot of time digging holes to no avail.SoI’m happy to believe the big cat and the yowie are out there somewhere and probably agree with Fox: “When conversation and science offer us no answers, might we not finally turn to the fantastic as a plausibility?”. Amen to that.

values have decreased dramatically on the Sunshine Coast and beyond, bringing an apparent end to a two-year boom. The latest insight from property experts CoreLogic show house prices in the region experienced a 4.5 per cent decline since the market peaked a few months ago, and a 2.2 per cent fall from July to August.
Mr Lawless says the recent sharp drop in prices is a relative reaction to the steep increase in prices.

That’s the third-largest drop across regional areas, behind Richmond-Tweed and Southern Highlands-Shoalhaven in NSW, and the second-biggest drop in Queensland, behind Brisbane North.
“We’re now into the down phase,” he says. “The market peaked in April to May and we’ve seen three to four months of value falls now and it looks like that’s gathering some momentum.
The sudden drop in prices was in stark contrast to the phenomenal price rises from early 2020 to April/May this year. Local McGrath real estate sales agent Matt Diesel says prices in the region have cooled. Mr Diesel, Sunshine Coast zone chairman for the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, says the market is levelling out and that it will create a “healthy” environment for buyers and sellers.
While property prices are falling in the region, buyers and sellers alike are welcoming a return to ‘normality’. Words: Steele Taylor.
But Mr Diesel says there is still strong competition for high-quality property: “It’s still selling and they’re getting record prices, as we’ve seen in the past couple of weeks. There have been some phenomenal sales and competition for them. It just depends on where it is and what it is.”
Houses that were worth a median price of almost $1.117m in April have lost significant value to sit at $1.066m in August: about $50,000 less. Unit prices in the region experienced a 5.5 per cent decline. Units worth a median price of $785,000 in May were worth about $742,000 in August.

This beautifully presented two-bedroom groundfloor apartment sits atop the magnificent Moffat Headland and is just a short stroll to cafés, restaurants and one of the Coast’s best surf breaks. The unit offers a generous open-plan living area and has front and rear courtyard balconies. The front enjoys the ocean vista and manicured gardens, while the rear overlooks the leafy George Watson Bushland Reserve. This courtyard also provides easy, level access for the less mobile. The motivated sellers require a sale at auction.

Hey kids, currently in New Zealand doing an extreme challenge with my son. I have brought extra pairs of undies as required. Forgotten how beautiful New Zealand is ... wow! Pretty sure there is not much surf but the whales are certainly putting on a show. Now we are off to look at the massive bungy jump and I am pretty sure he won’t challenge me or if he does I think the extra undies might come in handy.
