It’s hard to believe it wasn’t all that long ago that people were smoking in restaurants, shopping centres, workplaces and on planes.
Thankfully, we have come a long way since then and today’s young people are much more enlightened about the dangers of nicotine and its devastating long-term effects on their health.
However, parents and schools are now struggling to manage a new and growing danger among our youth: vaping.
Marketed to be highly appealing to teens, with brightly coloured e-pens and fun and fruity flavours luring them in, a new generation is being exposed to a raft of harmful chemicals. Many are blissfully unaware of the dangers.
Despite their rise in popularity, there is still a lot of confusion around vaping

Quitting the pre-pandemic work trends
A recent survey has uncovered a disturbing extent of malcontent within Australia’s workforce, as growing numbers of employees seek a better work/life balance.
Millionsof Australian workers are fed up and looking to change professions as companies grapple with growing negative employee sentiment.
Close to half of all employees, or 42 per cent, are very likely to leave their workplace in the next six to 12 months, a recent survey by Allianz Australia reveals.
That’s the equivalent of about two million workers getting ready to quit within the next year, a roundtable discussion presented by the insurer and the Corporate Mental Health Alliance heard in Sydney recently.
Two-in-five employees and more than half of all managers believe the most significant workplace impact from the COVID-19 pandemic is yet to come.
Only a third of workers reported finding a positive work/life balance since the beginning of the pandemic.
Businesses likely to be hardest hit by workers abandoning ship are those that have been slow to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape, Allianz chief general manager Julie Mitchell says.
A litany of trends is underlying
workers’ urge to quit – including burnout, staff shortages and a desire for better pay – leading to workers shouldering extra workloads, as well as mental health issues.
Mental health workers’ compensation claims are up 17 per cent and the amount of time employees are taking off for those claims has grown 19 per cent.
X are motivated by financial reward and praise. Millennials are seeking collegiate workplaces with empathetic managers, Ms Mitchell says.
Microsoft Australia managing director Steven Worrall says there’s never been a more challenging time for companies, where they have to provide such nuanced catering to different generations in the workforce. Businesses’ ability to attract and retain talent is becoming a massive issue around the world.
“I don’t want to equate it with a pandemic, but it’s not far from it,” Mr Worrall says.
PICKING UP THE PIECES
Australians caught up in a massive breach of Optus data will be able to change their driver’s licence numbers and get new cards, with the telco expected to bear the multimillion-dollar cost of a changeover.
The NSW, Victorian, Queensland and South Australia governments have begun clearing the bureaucratic hurdles for anyone who can prove they are victims of the hack. The data breach has affected millions of people.
“People are understandably stressed and need a pathway forward,” NSW Customer Service Minister Victor Dominello posted on Twitter.
A generational divide was also identified, with the biggest increase in workers’ compensation claims for mental health coming from Generation Z-aged workers, followed by Millennials, Baby Boomers and Generation X.
Generational groupings have distinct yearnings for what they want from work.
Generation Z want defined hours, while older Baby Boomers and Generation
Perceptions of how they value and relate to their workplace shifted through the pandemic, and people now need to feel comfortable bringing their “whole selves” to work.
They need to air grievances about conditions or their home lives.
The research was conducted by Allianz Australia in August with 1500 employees and 500 managers.
The company weighted results to reflect data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
– AAP.
Meanwhile, the group claiming to be behind the breach has dropped a ransom demand and says it has deleted the 11 million customer records it scraped from the telco’s website.
The attempt to force Optus to pay $US1 million ($A1.54 million) by Friday was dropped hours after the group released 10,000 records containing sensitive customer details on a data breach forum on the clear web.
The illegally obtained information includes passport, Medicare and driver’s licence numbers, dates of birth, home addresses and information about whether a person is renting or living with parents. – AAP.

Did you know?French connection
It might seem safe to assume that the Canary Islands were named after canary birds. However, the location was actually named for a different animal. Although it’s off the coast of Northwestern Africa, the archipelago is actually part of Spain. In Spanish, the area’s name is Islas Canarias, which comes from the Latin phrase Canariae Insulae, which means “island of dogs”.
By the numbers
France is a beautiful country, filled to the brim with delicious wines, scrumptious cheese and tonnes of romance. So, it’s no surprise that more people want to visit France than any other country in the world, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. Prepandemic, the European country welcomed 86.9 million people in 2017. Spain was the second-most popular destination with 81.8 million visitors.

Do you remember? ‘Dumb phones’
In a world of smartphones, these old-fashioned mobile phones basically did nothing but call, send text messages and perhaps, if you were lucky, allow you to play a cheeky game of Snake. They are now thoroughly antiquated and more or less obsolete. The precursor to the modern mobile, they were extremely useful in their time and could happily run for days without charge – something which is sorely missed.

Up in (vape) smoke
Just when health departments seemed to be winning the war against smoking on health grounds, along comes a new device with the potential to be just as deadly as the common cigarette – and our teenagers are embracing it.
Ina world as technologically advanced as the one we live in, it’s no wonder a once-popular – and potentially deadly – pastime has seen a digital upgrade.
Smoking dates back centuries and has seen a variety of forms since tobacco was first chewed and smoked some 2000 years ago before cigarette machines were developed in the late 1800s.
If you cast your mind back to movies or advertisements during the 20th century, smoking was a way of life, widely accepted and considered fashionable.
It was featured on the big screen in 1978’s Grease, where Olivia Newton-John’s character Sandy transforms from pure and innocent teen to smoking-hot vamp, and animated Disney classics such as 101 Dalmatians (1961), where villain Cruella de Vil always carries a cigarette.
During the world wars, smoking increased dramatically, mainly due to the policy of providing free cigarettes to allied troops as a ‘morale-boosting’ exercise.
As the years went by, important conversations emerged about the potentially deadly health risks associated with direct and second-hand smoking and links to some forms of cancer.
We became less enthusiastic about smoking cigarettes.
But then along came a new device.
A new trend in smoking is emerging, and it is one that is having a significant
impact on some of society’s most impressionable minds – teenagers.
E-cigarettes are becoming popular with people of all ages. The batteryoperated device makes vapour for inhalation, simulating cigarette smoking.
The term commonly associated with using an e-cigarette is known as ‘vaping’.
The e-cigarettes are appealing due to their candy-like flavours and low odour, as opposed to the strong smell associated with a cigarette.
E-cigarettes are available in a variety of forms and may look like cigarettes, cigars and pipes or everyday items such as pens or memory sticks.
But just like the cloud of vape that comes from these relatively inconspicuous devices, a cloud of uncertainly relates to associated health risks and the legalities around e-cigarettes.
In Australia, as of October 2021, it is illegal to use, sell or buy e-cigarettes containing highly addictive nicotine without a prescription.
Over-the-counter vapes that do not contain nicotine are accessible to anyone over the age of 18. However, the Lung Foundation Australia says many users find loopholes by buying products and liquid cartridges online.
It is understood that these products are often imported from overseas –meaning, there is little control over how
they are manufactured, how they are labelled and what they contain.
When it comes to their use by teenagers, recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals more than 7.6 per cent of 15 to 17-year-olds have used an e-cigarette or vaping device at least once.
However, it is believed this number could be higher, due to responses being
provided by an adult living in the same household.
A ground-breaking behavioural study by Perth-based social enterprise The Behaviour Change Collaborative (The BCC) has also found that for most teens, vaping is perceived as normal.
The BCC’s founder and managing director Luke van der Beeke says teenagers, themselves, confirm growing evidence that vaping among their peers is widespread. The research was conducted over two iterative stages, with 92 teenagers attending years 7 to 12 in Western Australia.
It sheds much-needed light on the knowledge, perceptions, attitudes and influences on teen vaping.
“While many teens know vaping is bad for them, their knowledge is superficial,” Mr van der Beeke says.
“For teens who vape, the benefits far outweigh the costs.
“And for teens, the key benefits are the nicotine hit and the flavourings.”
The study also reveals that for most teens, vaping without nicotine or flavour is considered pointless and that disposable vapes are the most used because they are easy to access and cheaper to buy than refillable vapes.
It suggests older teens might buy vapes directly from retailers and have rarely, if ever, been asked for ID.
Social media trading is also common,

“(E-cigarettes) are being very deliberately marketed over social media to be very cool”
Dr Rachael Sharman

COVER STORY
while younger teens may access vapes through older friends and siblings.
As a University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer and researcher in the field of psychology, especially child/adolescent development, Dr Rachael Sharman tells My Weekly Preview it is natural for teenagers to experiment with new trends.
But it is also important that they know the risks involved.
“Smoking is old school now, so this is basically the new smoking,” Dr Sharman says. “Adolescence is typically a time of risk taking and experimentation and doing anything that separates you from your parents or previous generations.”
She says one of the main issues with the vaping ‘trend’ is the way they are marketed to teenagers across social media platforms, including Tik Tok.
“(E-cigarettes) are being very deliberately marketed over social media to be very cool and they are a lot more palatable than traditional smoking,” Dr Sharman says.
“The first time most people experience a cigarette, it is quite unpleasant, but these are quite pleasantly favourable and easier to tolerate.”
Dr Sharman says vaping is much easier to conceal than smoking and so it can be harder for parents and teachers to police: “It’s much easier to conceal and I think that’s important as well as to why teenagers are picking it up.
“If someone is vaping in their room, you are unlikely to know.
“Vaping is a lot less intrusive and unless you walk into someone’s vape cloud, you can’t really detect that people are vaping.
“If you try and light up a sneaky cigarette out the back of the toilets at school, five teachers are going to descend upon you immediately.”
The Lung Foundation Australia says e-cigarettes can serve as a ‘gateway’ to nicotine addiction and tobacco smoking later in life.
Dr Sharman references a recent study around this that revealed vapes –
FAST FACTS
Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveals more than 7.6 per cent of 15 to 17-year-olds have used an e-cigarette at least once.
One of the main issues with the vaping ‘trend’ is the way they are marketed to teenagers across social media platforms.
E-cigarettes are available in a variety of forms and may look like cigarettes, cigars, pipes or everyday items such as pens or memory sticks.
E-cigarettes can contain known cancer-causing chemicals including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein
It is illegal to use, sell or buy e-cigarettes containing nicotine without a prescription.
particularly if they contain nicotine – can lead to addiction.
“What the study found was that if you look at teenagers who have never smoked, teenagers who vaped were three-times more likely to end up smoking in the end.
“It’s worth reminding people nicotine is a very addictive drug and the earlier (teenagers) get addicted to it, the harder it is to get rid of it.
“The developing brain seems to be particularly interested in nicotine, so we want to prevent that as much as possible.”
In terms of raising discussions about the risk of vaping with teenagers, Dr Sharman suggests asking them what content is coming through on their social media and then taking them through a critical analysis.
“Sit down with your teen and have a look at some of the marketing coming
through Tik Tok,” Dr Sharman says.
“Get them to critically think about what it is, why they are marketing it to them and what (an e-cigarette company’s) agenda is.
“Rather than tell them what the teenager should think, pose a series of questions to them to make them think about what is going on and hopefully they will come to their own conclusions.”
Schools across the Sunshine Coast are also cracking down on e-cigarette use, including Immanuel Lutheran College and Sunshine Coast Grammar School, which are doing positive educational campaigns with staff, students and parents through leading experts from the university. Some schools have also installed vape-detection sensors in bathrooms to deter the behaviour.
The Queensland Police Service has launched a series of videos designed to urge school-aged children to “think twice” before vaping. The two-part video series also includes information around the legislation affecting vaping, as well as health messaging supported by Queensland Health and the Lung Foundation.
Superintendent John Hallam says police have a key role to play in addressing the issue of vaping among young people.
“As police, we have the responsibility of educating our community and enforcing Queensland’s laws, including laws that impact underage vaping,” Superintendent Hallam says.
“These videos have been created to empower young people to make better decisions, giving them critical thinking skills that will contribute to minimising a range of offending behaviours and improving their health.”
This awareness campaign comes as Queensland Health in July launched Vape Truths featuring popular science expert Dr Karl Kruszelnicki.
More information on this campaign is available at vapetruths.initiatives. qld.gov.au.

ARE E-CIGARETTES SAFE?
The Department of Health says e-cigarettes are not considered safe.
They are sometimes marketed to those wanting to quit smoking, but there is not enough evidence to show that they help.
As discussed by USC’S Dr Rachael Sharman, there is more evidence that they are a gateway to smoking than the other way around.
In Australia, all e-cigarettes that contain nicotine require a prescription. However, hazardous substances have been found in e-cigarette liquids and in the aerosol produced by e-cigarettes, including known cancer-causing agents formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and acrolein. The department says e-cigarettes do not produce the tar produced by conventional cigarettes, which is the main cause of lung cancer, but it is concerned that using e-cigarettes could increase risk of lung disease, heart disease and cancer.
While most long-term health effects are still unknown, the Lung Foundation states: “Vaping in the short-term has been associated with nausea, vomiting, mouth and airway irritation, chest pain and heart palpitations”.

CONSUMERS BRUSH OFF RATE RISES AGAIN
Interest rate rises and cost of living pressures have failed to slow down spending, with retail sales remaining stronger than expected. per cent.
Consumers are still shopping despite aggressive interest rate hikes, with retail trade turnover lifting 0.6 per cent in August.
Despite cost of living pressures and 175 basis points of cash rate hikes driving up mortgage repayments, spending on nice-to-haves remains strong.
Discretionary spending was strongest in department stores - up 2.8 per centand household goods retailing was up 2.6
Food-related spending also lifted, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics data, with eating out at cafes and restaurants - plus takeaways - up 1.3 per cent.
However, spending was down in other discretionary categories, such as clothing, footwear and personal accessories.
CreditorWatch economist Anneke Thompson says this could be a sign
consumers were starting to tighten their purse strings.
Despite the mixed result across discretionary categories, overall spending remained 16 per cent above the preCOVID trend and a massive 19 per cent above the downcast pandemic spending this time last year.
The retail sales boost was slightly higher than analysts expected, and followed a 1.3 per cent month-on-month jump in July and a more modest 0.4 per cent lift in June.
AMP economist Shane Oliver says people were likely able to keep spending because they had built up comfortable savings buffers.
He also says the wealth effect from elevated home prices was likely feeding into spending habits, as was the strength of the jobs market.
Dr Oliver says retail sales had stayed strong for longer than expected but also said it took time for rate hikes to flow through.
“We continue to expect a slowdown ahead as rate hikes are fully reflected in mortgage payments, rates continue to rise, negative wealth effects from now falling home prices start to impact, consumer confidence remains depressed and the rundown in the saving rate runs its course,” he says.
Ms Thompson says the Reserve Bank of Australia would be watching spending during the upcoming summer holiday and festive season closely.
“If consumer behaviour does start to better reflect very negative consumer sentiment, then business sentiment is likely to start falling as well,” she says.
The end of the fuel excise tax cutexpected to add more than 20 cents to every litre of petrol - will also likely add to household budget pressure.
The fuel excise tax was halved for six months as a cost of living relief measure but will expire shortly.
EARLY DETECTION IS KEY TO SURVIVAL
Sunshine Coast business owner Christian Davies is a prostate cancer survivor – his father, uncle and cousin were not. In 2018 he was the youngest person on the Sunshine Coast to be diagnosed with the form of cancer at just 44, and now Mr Davies is urging all men to get tested. Off the back of Prostate Cancer Awareness month in September Mr Davies’ story offers hope in the fight against Australia’s second most male-diagnosed cancer. After his diagnosis, Mr Davies was underwhelmed with the options for treatment and after doing his research and asking for a second opinion learnt of robotic surgery. Due to his age, Mr Davies was eligible to take part in a study for the Da Vinci Robot, which under the trained hands of one of the leading robotic surgeons, specialises in prostate removal. Mr Davies underwent the surgery with no additional chemical treatments and is now cancer free. There are not always symptoms associated with prostate cancer and Mr Davies says early detection is what saved his life. “It’s only a blood test to check, which you can add to any standard check-up. Early detection is your greatest ally.”

HAVE YOUR SAY ON REVAMP OF LOO WITH A VIEW
Two concept designs for a major revamp of the Loo with a View precinct have been released by Sunshine Coast Council – and the public is invited to choose which design they like best. The Mooloolaba beachfront location –known as the Stage Two Central Meeting Place – aims to address the shortcomings of the iconic Loo with a View, which is getting old and has accessibility and amenity failings, while still maintaining public amenities in the same key location. The council’s two proposals, labelled Concept Blue and Concept Yellow, highlight Mooloolaba’s famed ocean views and feature accessible public amenities, including a Changing Places facility. The designs
offer similar functionality and amenity, with viewing decks, meeting places, picnic areas, public toilets, beach showers, landscaping, integrated seawall and a coastal pathway all included as part of both concepts. The key difference between the two concepts is that one separates these elements to prioritise public space and enable more expansive beach views, while the other has the public amenities, viewing platform and event space located in one larger building, as occurs with the current facility.
Members of the public are invited to share their thoughts on the two designs at haveyoursay.

An important week is about to kick off state-wide to shine a spotlight on individual and community mental health issues and wellbeing.
October 8 to 16 will mark Queensland Mental Health Week (QMHW) – an annual awareness campaign that in 2022 will see a theme of: “Awareness, belonging and connection”.
A National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing, conducted in 2021, revealed an estimated 21.4 per cent of Australians, aged 16 to 85, experienced a mental disorder in the previous 12 months.
QMHW encourages everyone to think about mental health and wellbeing, regardless of lived experience, and to seek help when needed. The initiative is linked to National Mental Health Week and World Mental Health Day, which is held on October 10 every year. Throughout QMHW local events, conversations and activities take place.
The Lift the Lid Walk is on at Mooloolaba on Sunday, October 9, and has a special connection with the region.

NEWS REVIEW
A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR OUR REGION
Sunshine Coast Council last month released its Environment and Liveability Strategy Annual Report 2021/22, highlighting the organisation’s progress in creating Australia’s most sustainable region. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the report provides a comprehensive overview of council’s leadership and actions contributing towards a sustainable Sunshine Coast. “From being recognised internationally as a biosphere, to strategic environment land acquisitions, planning for recreational outcomes, and developing pathways to respond efficiently and innovatively to a changing climate, the implementation of council’s award-winning Environment and Liveability Strategy is extensive,” Mayor Jamieson says.
300 MILLIMETRES
Sunshine Coast residents are being remined to undertake regular checks on swimming pools, spas and portable and inflatable swimming pools to ensure compliance is upheld ahead of the summer season. The Queensland pool safety standards regulate the height and strength of barriers, non-climbable zones, gate latching requirements and preventing direct access from a building into a pool area. Pools capable of holding more than 300 millimetres in depth, must comply with the Queensland pool safety standard. For more information visit qbcc.qld.gov.au.

Postcodes across Queensland have been compared to determine which areas have the most residential rooftop solar, with Caloundra coming in third place. Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt says more people on the Sunshine Coast were choosing solar. “The 4551 postcode, including Caloundra, Caloundra West, Pelican Waters, Golden Beach, Kings Beach, Moffat Beach, Dicky Beach, Currimundi and Meridan Plains, has over 12,820 solar customers,” Mr Hunt says. “Sunshine Coast residents who have installed solar on their home should be congratulated for being part of Queensland’s biggest power station. Buderim (4556) is number 16 in the list of Queensland postcodes.
NUMBERS SHOW WE LOVE OUR FRIES
Guzman y Gomez (GYG) has crunched the numbers revealing the Sunshine Coast is one of the most popular locations for fries in Australia. GYG Maroochydore has come out on top officially selling the most fries of any other GYG restaurant in Queensland – and ranking fourth nationally. The Maroochydore store has sold more than 170,000 fries, nacho fries, cali burritos and queso fries this year –beating GYG Bowen Hills for the number one spot.
THE GEM SERIES - BY THE EXPERTS
AThe new TV show Outback Opal Hunters has seen an increased interest in Australia’s national gemstone. Such great characters and amazing scenery!
The basic categories for opal are boulder, crystal (which can be black or white), jelly and then the composites – called doublets or triplets.
If you look at opal under magnification, it is made up of spheres of silica. Picture pool or snooker balls on a table as the spheres. How tightly they are sitting next to each other
determines what colours are seen.
The highly prized red comes from the biggest and more uniformed spheres. The colour of the pool table also comes into play. With boulder opal, the pool table is ironstone. Black opal means a black pool table.
It can be challenging for people to gauge how opals are priced or valued. The best rule of thumb is always buy for yourself. If you love the look of it and the budget fits it will always be a good buy.

A BIG PRICE TO PAY
Hefty competition has forced a store to close. WORDS: Caitlin Zerafa.
An independent Sunshine Coast supermarket has closed its doors permanently after struggling to compete with a grocery giant.
Everfresh IGA North Buderim, on Pittards Road (pictured), closed last week, just 18 months after Coles opened across the road. It was a bittersweet week for the IGA owners who were also marking four years since taking over the store, which employed about 40 local people.
Cornetts IGA chief executive Graham Booysen, whose company owns the North Buderim IGA, says it is “very sad” to be forced to close.
“It was a good, viable business before the Coles opened,” Mr Booysen says.
“With Coles opening, we’ve probably lost about half of our business.
“Once you lose half your turnover in a store like that, it just doesn’t become viable. It was still a good store and we still maintained loyalty of some customers.
“But once you get a store like Coles open across the road, it is very difficult to compete on range and price.

“It also has an effect on all the direct suppliers we used to buy from on the Sunshine Coast, like local honey and strawberries, for example.”
Prior to closing, the store held a 50 per cent-off sale to move stock, with anything left over being donated to Lifeline.
Mr Booysen says he believes the continued approval of new supermarkets by Sunshine Coast Council is making it difficult for smaller stores to survive.
The application for a shopping complex on Jones Road (where Coles is) was initially rejected by Sunshine Coast Council. However, the site developer appealed the decision with the Planning and Environment Council.
The decision was eventually overturned in October 2017 and work began to build the complex in April 2018.
“There are so many supermarkets on the Sunshine Coast and they seem to just keep getting approved by council,” Mr Booysen says. “It is a free country and people are allowed to open up businesses, but I think (council) really need to consider what they do when it comes to supermarkets.”

Impact of division five landslips
The impact of a series of major landslips caused by the February and May weather event has assessed the worst affected areas being Bald Knob, Wootha, Glenview, Eudlo, Peachester, Montville and Towen Mountain. The landslide at Hovard Road, Bald Knob has closed off the thoroughfare, and I’m eager to see repair works start soon to help minimise the impact on Bald Knob residents and surrounding communities. Design works have started for this job which will be a vastly complex construction project,
which is estimated to cost $5 million and one that is unlikely to be completed until 2024. We are liaising with the affected local residents, and we are providing as much information as we can to keep the community informed.
Mooloolah Valley Sports Complex
The Mooloolah Valley Sports Complex Carpark on Connection Road, Landsborough will see the large gravel and grass informal parking area transformed into 80 sealed carparks, circulation lanes and landscaping. Access will be maintained throughout construction to cause minimal disruption.

SUNNY BY NAME, SUNNY BY NATURE
As a marketer there is nothing more exciting than launching a new campaign. It’s when a lot of research, strategic thinking, post-it notes and planning comes together in one simple message needed to get cut-through in such a busy media landscape.
And I’m backing that our new campaign message, which invites visitors to come and find their “sunshine moment”, will deliver this for real!
The thinking behind this is to take ownership of what’s in our name and evolve how people relate to sunshine being a thing to sunshine being a feeling.
The campaign is all about bringing out the sunshine feeling our visitors experience on the Coast. As locals you know it’s that feeling of positive energy and happiness that is everywhere across the destination.
In other words, what we are doing is showcasing that a trip to the Sunny Coast brings out the sunshine in everyone who visits. It makes them walk a little lighter and
laugh a little louder.
This message will share that we’re not just sunny by name but sunny by nature too!
What’s more, as a world first, the new campaign was powered using the sun from the Sunshine Coast, with film equipment on set - from cameras to laptops, battery chargers and even hair dryers using solar energy only.
This was an ambitious project and is the first step in our ongoing commitment towards sustainability and reinforces our sustainability credentials as a UNESCO biosphere corridor.
Our ads will run across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. But you won’t see them being played locally, so head to visitsc.au/sunshinemoments to see the new campaign or go that step further and share your Sunshine Moment with us directly via social media and #sunshine moment. For real!

STILL SPARKLING AFTER 50 YEARS

“There is something utterly beautiful about creating things from precious metals and gemstones.
“Your working day is hands on and working with nature is grounding. It’s so rewarding to help create pieces for our clients, which bring so much joy and happiness.”
Sunstate Jewellers is a member of the prestigious Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia and Ms Williams has won several design awards over the years, specifically around boulder opals.
Marking this significant milestone, Ms Williams says she is grateful for the continued support from local and interstate customers who value craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Asuccessful multi-generational jewellery store, that originated from weekends spent at a beach shack at Golden Beach, is celebrating 50 years in business.
Sunstate Jewellers came about when Brisbane-based jewellers Bob Clark and Lester Smiley, who regularly spent weekends at a beach shack called Snug, realised they could do the same work they did in the city, but make the most of the Sunshine Coast lifestyle.
Moving their young families north, they purchased a house on the corner of George and Allen streets in Moffat Beach, which became the workshop in 1972.
Sunstate Jewellers developed and
trademarked Australia’s first branded jewellery range, The Australian Heritage Collection. They then developed several other brands: Classic Gold, Elegance and Opulence, supplying retail jewellers throughout Australia and collectively manufacturing more than 10 million units.
Today, Mr Smiley’s daughter Rita Williams is the owner and focuses on creating bespoke, handmade pieces using sustainable or recycled gold.

SUNSHINE COAST SURFING GROMS BARREL THE OPPOSITION
Youth surfers from across the Sunshine Coast have shone in the third round of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp Series.
Held at Miami Beach on the Gold Coast from September 24 to 25, the weekend offered plenty of waves for the under-8 parent-assist division all the way to the under-14s.
The Under-12 boys’ division was a clean sweep for the Sunshine Coast.
Currimundi’s Zac Johnston took out first place, followed by Ky Clements (Coolum Beach), Harrison Gibbs (Golden Beach) and Sonny Brooke
(Marcus Beach). The Under-14 girls’ division saw Sunshine Beach twins Rosie (pictured) and Eliza Richardson place first and second respectively.
Other placegetters included Henry Dowling (Sunrise Beach) Jesse Fergusson (Sunshine Beach) and Hayden Danswan (Peregian Springs) in the under-14 boys, and Charlotte Rielly (Dicky Beach) and Evie Wilson (Marcus Beach) in the under-12 girls.
The surfers will now focus their sights on the final event of the Queensland series, to be held on the Sunshine Coast from December 10 to 11.

DESIGNATED WARD AIMS TO REDUCE SURGERY WAITING TIMES
A new 24-bed surgical ward at Sunshine Coast University Hospital has welcomed its first urology and gynaecology patients and aims to reduce surgery waiting times.
Nursing director Ashleigh Coombs says the urology and gynaecology inpatient ward means more patients can receive elective surgery sooner.
“We will also have increased capacity to accommodate emergency cases,” she says.
“Although urology and gynaecology are pre-existing services within our hospital,
they will now have a designated home ward, enabling us to expand our services within those specialities.”
To staff the ward, 31 full-time nurses will be recruited over three months, with additional staff to expand the services in the operating theatre.
Ms Coombs says medical, nursing and allied health staff will offer multidisciplinary, patient-focused treatment for adults requiring emergency and elective category 1, 2 and 3 surgery and critical care.

COMMUNITY NOTES
ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)
The week begins in the last stage of the full moon phase in Aries, which fires up your passion for personal projects. But you may come down to earth with a thud on Wednesday when Neptune squares your ruler, Mars, and you realise fiery enthusiasm isn’t enough.
LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
Long-term partnerships – of the romantic, platonic and business variety – are highlighted this week. The sun demands energy and dignity; Venus – calm cooperation; Mercury – clear communication; and Saturn – dedication and loyalty. Keep the conversation uplifting!
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)
When it comes to communication and conversation, you’ve certainly got the Sagittarian gift of the gab. But be careful you don’t blurt out remarks that you’ll later regret. With Saturn sauntering through your social media zone, try to be compassionate towards others.
TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21)
Do you enjoy your job and does it stimulate your mind? This week, take the time to re-evaluate a professional matter (or a volunteer position) as the sun, Venus, Mercury and Saturn stimulate your work sectors.
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
You’re determined to complete a project but as Neptune squares Mars, and Mercury (your power planet) opposes Jupiter expect misunderstandings and disruptions. Patience and compromise are required, otherwise it will be a long and confusing week.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
Despite nebulous Neptune confusing issues, strive to be creative, rather than bewildered, at work. Clear communication will get you a lot further than confrontation, so aim to be as cooperative as possible.
QUIZ
GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21)
With the sun, Venus and Mercury activating your creativity zone, it’s time to write, sing, dance, perform, paint or play music as you draw on the richness of your colourful world within. Saturn will help you turn imaginative ideas into productive projects.
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
This week is all about getting the ratio right between your busy public life and your private inner world. It’s also time to make plans, set goals and dream big dreams. And don’t make them too safe and sensible!
Go for gold, as mighty Mars helps you be bold about the future.
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
Someone may pressure you to reveal information that was given to you in confidence. Hence your current moral and philosophical conundrum as you ponder “Is honesty always the best policy?”.
CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)
Crabs are capricious creatures and mood swings are likely, as the tension gradually dissipates after the fiery full moon. If you keep busy (and physically active) then it will take your mind off your tempestuous (and exhausting) emotions.
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
There could be confusing words between you and an old friend, as you seem to be heading in different directions. Remember the good times you’ve enjoyed together and search for common ground. Things will look a lot brighter in the morning.
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
It’s not a good week to take on mighty challenges or make important decisions. There’s a nebulous Mars/Neptune square, so life will be complicated, physical energies low, and you may feel mentally confused.
Complete the list by changing one letter at a time to create a new word at each step. One possible answer shown below.
1. In what year was the film Vanilla Sky, starring Tom Cruise, released?
2. What is the name of the famous Salvador Dalí painting of clocks oozing over a landscape?
3. What colour is the skin of a ripe mangosteen?
4. What three colours appear on Cuba’s flag?
5. Which Canadian singer-songwriter released the albums The Reminder and Let it Die?
6. Sockeye, chum, coho and chinook are all species of what animal?
7. What was Michelangelo’s David (pictured) carved out of?
8. What is the West Australian state floral emblem?
9. Which cheese is a favourite of the animated characters Wallace and Gromit?
10. Who was the Roman god of agriculture and harvest?

WAY OUT WEST OF THE GREAT DIVIDE
Sami Muirhead and her family take a road trip into a strange and colourful new world – known as the Northern Territory.
flies, waiting for emus to move from behind reversing cars, and eating camel burgers at roadhouses in the middle of nowhere – that is what made the Northern Territory somewhere I will never forget.
Swallowing
What a country we have that almost beggars belief when it comes to its extreme beauty. I love our sunburnt country so much. And if Sydney is the jewel in our crown, then surely Uluru is the beating heart of our glorious nation.
Dirt runs everywhere you look like a huge magic red carpet that wraps around the base of ghost gums and slides down orange canyons before rolling up and over breathtaking amber rock formations.
Paddy melons lay dormant in empty, cracked creek beds and the bluest sky stretches for kilometres. It is countryside summed up in that James Reyne-James Blundell song: ‘’Way out west where the rain don’t fall, got a job with the company drilling for oil, just to make some change, living and a-working on the land.”
On our family road trip, we met Lola the bitsa dog that lived at Kings Creek Station, 260 kilometres southeast of Uluru. Lola was just like a dog out of a movie with her red bandana around her
neck and her laconic shuffle under the pub table as she looked humans up and down. A wise dog as tough as the outback.
Lola had a huge chunk of flesh missing from her floppy, honey-coloured ear. We asked what happened and the reply from a weathered old bushie was: “She got picked up and dropped by a wedge-tailed eagle.” Our shocked faces were met with laughter as he added: “Just joking, youse all, as Lola’s ear got torn up real good by a dingo when she was a pup.”
We also met a First Nations person, Tania, who gave us this advice – whenever you swim in a watering hole or creek, just throw a stone in first and say out loud: “I mean no harm to you and I just hope to cool off for a while”. My kids looked at Tania like she was some exotic goddess talking about skipping stones and babbling streams.
Finally, we drove into Alice Springs where the Todd River wraps its way around the town. It is totally dry and looks more like an unsealed highway than a river. The locals took much glee in telling us how, every August, the Todd River Race sees boats run through the hot sand in the only dry regatta in the world.
Only in our great country.

ARE YOU READY TO CARE?
children reach their full potential
healthTURN TO SCIENCE FOR A RESTFUL SLEEP
After 50 years of research, eminent Stanford University sleep researcher William Dement reportedly believes the only solid explanation he knows for why we sleep is “because we get sleepy”.
Even though sleep may be, as one researcher put it, “the only major behaviour in search of a function”, it clearly does matter for our health and wellbeing.
But are we doing it right? What does the research say about sleeping positions? Is there a correct position to sleep in?
Most people prefer to sleep on their side. This is good to hear, as those who lie on their backs are more likely to be poor sleepers or have breathing difficulties during the night.
In most cases, we tend to move around quite a lot during the night. One study of 664 sleepers found, on average, that participants spent about 54 per cent of
their time in bed sleeping on their side, about 37 per cent on their back, and about 7 per cent on their front.
Males (especially those aged under 35) tend to be most restless, with more position shifts, as well as arm, thigh and upper-back movements during the night.
This may not be a bad thing, as allowing your body to move during the night is generally a good idea.
During sleep, your body will keep track of any pain or discomfort and adjust position accordingly. This is why we usually avoid developing bedsores (or pressure ulcers) in everyday life.
If you find you can’t move because your partner (or dog) is taking up too much room in the bed, consider switching sides or getting a larger bed.
And don’t tuck yourself in too tightly: give yourself some room to move around on either side. Being comfortable is key.
No quality research provides clear evidence for an “optimal sleep position”.
Your age, weight, environment, activities and whether you’re pregnant all play a role in which sleep position is best for your body. Ideally, we can find a position that helps us get a good night’s sleep and avoids us waking up in any pain.
Even with our chosen position, some layouts are better than others. In one study, people who rested in a position where there is a rotation of the spine (such as the unsupported side position) woke up with more pain in the morning. Nonetheless, although some forms of side-sleeping may cause a bit of load on the spine, it appears the side positions, in general, are still better than the other options. What pillow should I choose?
Choosing the right pillow is vital for a good night’s sleep.
A lack of support for the head and neck
during sleep has been found to severely impact spine alignment and cause muscle problems such as neck and shoulder pain and muscle stiffness.
The pillow material, however, does not appear to affect the spine. Instead, the shape and the height are what matter.
A U-shaped pillow may help you have a longer night’s sleep, and a roll-shaped pillow can reduce morning and bedtime aches in those suffering from chronic pain.
Unfortunately, science has not given us an answer on what is the optimal mattress.
With everyone sleeping differently, this would be hard to compare over the long term. However, there are bad mattresses.
If your bed is sagging, has lost its firmness, develops noisy springs or shows clear signs of wear and tear, consider changing it.
Rotating the mattress can help with its longevity and improve comfort. This should be done at least one or two times a year. Other tips for a restful night’s sleep
Set a cooler room temperature. The ideal temperature for sleep is 18.3C (ranging between 15-19C). Higher temperatures can affect sleep.
Allow some airflow in the room. Fresh air clears away any accumulated heat, keeping us nice and cool during the night.
Some medications, such as certain types of antihistamines, may make it easier to get to sleep. On the other hand, stimulants such as caffeine can drastically affect the quality of your sleep.
Finally, be sure not to go to bed with a full bladder, as having to get up at night to wee can impact sleep.

HEALTHY MUSCLES MAKE US MOVE AND FEEL BETTER
There is more to healthy and strong muscles than meets the eye.
Muscles move and support our joints. Strong muscles are needed to support and prevent damage to the joints. They also relieve pain in hip, knee, shoulder and lower back joints that are unstable or arthritic.
Muscles play an important role in our overall health, including:
• preventing osteoporosis – increasing muscle strength can help increase bone density and bone strength
• preventing falls and injury – as we age, the important fast-twitch muscle fibres decrease in strength, causing balance issues and falls
• reducing blood pressure, decreasing heart rate, and preventing heart disease
– stronger muscles increase our metabolic rate, which can also help weight loss, and lower sugar levels and prevent diabetes.
However, strengthening muscles takes time and dedication to a weight and resistance program.
So, how do I build muscle if I am unable to spend hours every week in a gym program?
The truSculpt Flex muscle stimulator at Sun Sculpt Body Contouring + Muscle Rehab is the most powerful muscle stimulator available today.
It specifically targets the fast-twitch muscle fibres which are most important for increasing the size as well as the strength of muscles.
“The truSculpt Flex will strengthen muscles more rapidly than an exercise program without the risk of muscle or joint injury,” local orthopaedic surgeon Dr Allan Clarke says.

Smile IT’S WORTH IT
A CLEAR VISION FOR EYES ON WORLD SIGHT DAY
World Sight Day is just around the corner, on October 13 this year.
The special day draws attention to the importance of eye health and equitable access to vision-saving treatments such as glasses and cataract surgery. Uncorrected refractive error and cataracts are the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide.
While most of us have ready access to glasses and cataract surgery, these vision-correcting treatments are still unavailable in some Australian communities. On World Sight Day this year, love your eyes and make an appointment to get them checked.
Most vision-threatening eye conditions are reversible if treated in time. Remember, reduced vision is not a normal part of ageing. So, if you are having problems with your vision or have any eye symptoms, get your eyes checked. Once you have loved your own eyes and made that appointment, consider those in less-fortunate positions and donate to eye health.
Many organisations are doing extraordinary work in improving access to eyecare worldwide. Find the one that resonates most with you and make the donation that will change a life forever.
Imagine going from a life of blindness to normal vision after a 30-minute operation. That is the gift you can give with a single $25 donation.
Anyone who performs cataract surgery in remote Australia and developing nations has seen that $25 donation change a life immeasurably.
Let’s make the most of World Sight Day 2022.

EXCITING NEW DENTAL SPECIALISTS’ COLLABORATION ALLOWS PROCEDURES TO BE COMPLETED IN ONE DAY
People with missing or broken-down teeth often put off treatment.
This may be due to anxiety, fear of dental impressions, a strong gag reflex, claustrophobia or time constraints.
But those patients may now have a solution. Mrs L, a 60-year-old female patient, was treated by a team of Sunshine Coast specialists, Dr Ramman Oberoi and Dr Ian Wilson, using a digitised guided surgical approach: AuDentes®, developed by a Melbourne prosthodontist, Dr Philip Tan.
Her existing compromised teeth were replaced by new implantsupported fixed bridges in a single surgical procedure in a day surgery setting in a hospital.
Popular procedures claiming immediate teeth, in reality, provide teeth in three to five days, requiring
intervention and impressions in a post-surgery swollen and uncomfortable mouth. The temporary bridge then placed requires to be changed to a final one in a few months.
AuDentes®, however, offers instant teeth. The removal of existing teeth, implants placements and final fixed bridges can all be done in one day under one procedure, with comparable costs and minimal time. Some costs may be covered by your Medicare and private health cover, too.
If you are unhappy with your teeth or dentures and are considering options to replace them, call for a consultation or for more information on this exciting, new treatment option.

Patients often go the dentist for a routine check-up but are surprised when they need some kind of interceptive dental procedure – such as a filling, crown or deep clean – because they don’t have a toothache.
Did you know that most dental problems, like the rest of the body, only cause symptoms when they become advanced?
For example, dental decay happens slowly and generally does not cause any symptoms, such as pain or sensitivity, when in its early stages.
If decay is detected early (before
symptoms appear), usually a noninvasive white filling can be placed to prevent further spread of the decay.
If left untreated, decay will spread and eventually reach the nerve of the tooth, often causing severe pain and the need for more invasive treatment – a root canal and crown or extraction.
Routine examinations are the best way to allow early detection of dental problems before symptoms appear.
This results in less-invasive, lessexpensive and more-successful dental treatment in the long run.

Despite much work and scientific pursuit, an eyedrop has not yet been developed that effectively and reliably treats cataracts in humans. Today, micro-surgery remains the only way to definitively treat cataracts.
2. Cataracts only happen to very old people Cataract formation begins in mid-adult life, but only generally becomes symptomatic once we reach our 60s. However, cataracts can occur in even younger people, due to diabetes, steroids or eye trauma or inherited conditions.
3. Cataract surgery is a breeze Even when done well, cataract surgery is often more involved than people might expect. Much preparation goes into
cataract surgery – meticulous eye examination, open discussion of best artificial lens selection and careful measurement of the eye with precision instruments to ensure the best-possible lens is chosen.
On the day of the operation itself, meticulous surgery is crucial, including good wound architecture, safe and effective removal of the cloudy lens (cataract) and accurate lens positioning with the guidance of precise intraoperative software to ensure an excellent outcome.
4. Cataracts can come back after surgery There is a myth that cataracts can develop again long after cataract surgery. This is not true. When the cataract is removed at the time of surgery, it is removed from its natural capsule, into which the artificial lens is placed. The capsule that the lens sits in can become cloudy over time, affecting the vision with opacity, and making it seem like the cataract has come back. However, this can be readily treated with a simple laser procedure in rooms, restoring vision to clarity for the patient.

THE IMPORTANT FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A SUNSCREEN
Summer is finally on its way. So, when outdoors, don’t forget your sunscreen. Choosing a sunscreen that is safe, yet effective, can be a challenge – from understanding ingredients to how many application times are optimal.
Here’s a few helpful hints, or you can speak to the team at Kunara Organic Market for suggestions on what’s right for you and your family.
Sunscreen contains active ingredients that can help prevent the sun’s UV radiation from reaching your skin. UV rays play a role in the development of skin cancer-related deaths every year. They also cause premature ageing and skin damage.
Most sunscreens are divided into: Physical sunscreen: those that act like a shield to help block the sun’s rays. These sunscreens usually contain minerals such as zinc or titanium dioxide. Chemical sunscreen: absorbs UV rays like a sponge. Avobenzone and octisalate are chemicals commonly found in most of these sunscreens.
Additives in sunscreens aren’t necessarily good for our bodies or the environment.
Chemicals in conventional sunscreens have been linked to cancer and hormone disruption. They contain synthetic preservatives, benzoates and petrochemicals that can affect people who are sensitive or have allergies.
Always look for a more natural sunscreen which contains active ingredients from plants to coat the skin and reflect UV rays off the dermal layers.
Look for a reef-safe label when shopping. Environmental impacts from sunscreen are now widely known.
Synthetic chemicals used in some sunscreens’ ingredients are highly toxic to our coral reef and marine life.
Many chemicals used in sunscreen can affect our coral reef reproductive cycle, damage its DNA, and increase the effects of coral bleaching. Zinc-based sunscreens are preferable, as they are safe for your skin, hormones and our ocean life.
Sunscreen alone isn’t the best protection, however.
Make sure to cover up, wear a hat and sunglasses and venture out when the UV rays are at their lowest – usually early morning, late afternoon or early evenings. Regardless of SPF, reapplication of your sunscreen every two hours is highly recommended.
Sunscreen must also be reapplied immediately after swimming or sweating. With a great range of natural, reef-safe, child and sensitive skinfriendly options, Kunara Organic Marketplace is a great place to pick up your summer sun protection.

1. Vitamin D: Vitamin Sunshine! When you are outside, the sun’s ultraviolet UVB rays hit cholesterol in the skin cells, providing the energy for Vitamin D synthesis to occur.
2. Help to reduce stress: Being outside on a beautiful sunny day will help your body naturally regulate melatonin, which can help reduce your stress level.
3. Maintain strong bones: Vitamin D transformed by the sun helps your body maintain calcium and, in turn, can provide increased bone strength.
4. Improve sleep: The more sunlight hours you get in summer, the better you sleep. Sunlight regulates your melatonin levels and can help you to sleep better.
5. Improve serotonin levels: Sunshine is a natural serotonin booster. Serotonin is a mood booster to help you remain calm and balanced.
Be wary of the time of day (the sun is at its most powerful at noon) and how long you are in direct sun. Always wear a hat, sunglasses and sun-protective clothing, and remember to hydrate.

ACCESS TO WORLD-CLASS HEARING SERVICES IS EASY
Australia has a world-recognised system for identifying hearing loss and providing help for hearing-impaired older people.
The Australian Government’s Hearing Services program is available for eligible pensioners and veterans and access is easy.
In the distant past, these services were only available from government offices. Choices were very limited. For more than 20 years, pensioners and veterans have had freedom of choice of
where they received their services. This has led to a rapid increase in the number of providers, with many owned by large multinationals. But there are still various independent clinics you can choose.
Services include comprehensive hearing assessments, planned rehabilitation programs and the supply of high-quality, digital hearing aids.
There is quite often no need to spend any money to get great results. Some clinics operate on a commission basis, so beware of upselling. The best device is the one that suits the hearing loss and recommended on the basis of need, not price. Your clinician needs to understand what and where you want to hear.
If you are an eligible pensioner and your provider has not advised you of the high-quality free-to-client devices that are available, you need to start asking questions. Hearing loss is a health issue, not a retail opportunity. By taking charge of your hearing health, you are making your life (and the lives of all the people who want to talk to you) easier.
Mark Paton is a senior hearing rehabilitation specialist at Hear4Good: a local, Australian-owned and independent clinic in Golden Beach. The clinic is an accredited provider of government services. Call 5477 0144, hear4good.com.au.

Put self-care first to achieve goals
Aside from overeating, a contributor to weight gain may be your mindset.
If life is throwing you constant challenges, it may make it difficult to achieve your health and fitness goals.
If you get your mindset right, you will be in a much better place to commit to working on your health. So, it’s important to focus on that first.
Just a spot, or an ‘ugly duckling’?
You may be aware of the ‘ABCDE’ rule to spot a melanoma.
Yet, it is complicated and has its limitations.
The “ugly duckling sign” is a great alternative to help you ascertain if any spot on your skin is dangerous.

The day you acknowledge that you need some help with your mindset will be the day that you start to move in a more positive direction.
However, you need to take that first step, which is often not as easy as it sounds, but it is essential if you are to be successful with your long-term health goals.
Allocate some time to looking after your mindset and fitness goals and work them into your schedule. Be selfish with this time: it is an investment in yourself that will pay
Some people have only one characteristic pattern, while others may have two or even three such mole patterns.
The ugly duckling sign states that any spot looking different than the other spots is most likely to be a melanoma.
It is a validated score system with a 100 per cent sensitivity and 88.3 per cent specificity (better than the ‘ABCDE’ which is less sensitive and less specific).
Next time you scan your skin, look for the funny looking unusual one.

MEGA AUCTION DELIVERS TOP RESULTS
Amassive $33 million worth of properties changed hands at the Sunshine Coast’s biggest auction event of the year, flying in the face of a nation-wide slump in property values.
Twenty-four properties were sold, including a $5m penthouse at Cotton Tree, at the annual Ray White Coastal Living Network Auction at Mercedes Benz in Maroochydore.
There were 66 properties on offer and more than 160 registered bidders.
Event auctioneer and Ray White Mooloolaba director/sales and marketing James Goldworthy says there was “good competition”, despite recent reports of a slump in property values on the Sunshine Coast and around Australia.
There were plenty of bidders and interested parties at the auction at Mercedes Benz.
“There were just as many people in attendance and just as much competition for properties as last year,” he says.
$1.37m and 14 properties were sold for between $1m and $2.5m.
“From the bottom end to the top end, there was enough data to support the view that we’re still in pretty good stead,” Mr Goldsworthy says of the real estate climate.
The auction’s flagship property, a penthouse at award-winning Rise Maroochydore at Cotton Tree, attracted four bidders. No.102/67 Sixth Avenue was ultimately sold for $5m.
“It’s one the best units in one of the region’s premier complexes.”
The apartment has plenty of open space and an amazing view.
The penthouse was dubbed “the most desirable beachfront home in Maroochydore” in the sale pitch.
It boasts two levels, four bedrooms, three bathrooms and three car spaces, with stunning views up and down the coastline and it’s walking distance to the beach and the Maroochydore CBD.
“It’s probably the most-expensive apartment sold at auction in the Maroochydore region for some time,” he says.
He said the auction event bucked the perception of slumping property prices.
“There is a fair bit of negativity at the moment around (increasing) interest rates in the media, but it really didn’t play out at the event,” he says.
“We averaged 2.5 bidders per auction and the bidding was strong across the board.
“To have a clearance rate of 41 per cent on one day with such volume of stock on the Sunshine Coast is extraordinary.”
A grand house in Buderim was among other properties that sold for much more than it was expected to.
“It was impressive. The energy in the room was electric.”
The average property sale was about
“It’s pretty spectacular,” Mr Goldsworthy says. “It was encouraging to see such strong interest on such highcalibre and high-priced real estate.
Fellow event auctioneer and Ray White Maroochydore director Dan Sowden said the penthouse sale was remarkable.
There were six bidders for No.13 Royal Pine Drive, which was ultimately sold for $1.5m to a young family who had relocated to the region and had been looking for nine months for a place to call their own.

FRAMING AN EXCITING FUTURE
Pelican
Waters is entering its final stages of development, meaning available land is in finite supply.
Only a handful of premium lots are currently on the market, and now is the time to secure the perfect canvas for your dream coastal home before prices rise.
This land won’t last forever, and these unique lifestyle opportunities are becoming scarcer by the day.
Only seven waterfront lots remain at the popular Castaways precinct nestled between parkland and the wide canal on the new island, while just three premium north facing lots are up for grabs across the water at Navigators.
Meanwhile, pricing is imminent for new Signature Terrace homes at Castaways, providing a luxury low maintenance option for downsizers and couples.
Secure your lot in this pristine lifestyle destination while you can and tell your friends!
The amenity of the Castaways precinct, and the whole community, has been recently enhanced with the opening of the new pedestrian bridge linking to the southern end of Pelican Waters
through to the coastal path along Bells Creek.
Enhancing the maritime theme and in keeping with other bridges around the island, the new structure’s keel shaped features and LED lighting displays offers an impressive access to the marina and Central Park for walkers, joggers, riders and skaters.
It is impossible to miss the enormous framework underway at the marina precinct as the state-of-the-art boat shed and dry stacker facility nears the finish line.
On completion, the facility will comprise a fully enclosed 3,000sqm shed for the storage of up to 160 boats up to 10m in length, boat lifts, one hour launch and retrieval service, boat washdown and engine flush amenities, client lounge and more.
On the water, the network of floating pontoons which are now more than 95 per cent complete, set the scene for what will be a thriving hub of nautical activity once the boats arrive.
We are working through some red tape issues with Unity Water with regards to
service provision for future marina users, resulting in frustrating delays. However, we are still optimistic of a December –January opening for what will be the first marina of its kind for the region in many decades.
Deposits are now being taken from boaties keen to secure spots in the dry stacker and wet berths, while interest is also flooding in for the exciting range of commercial opportunities attached to the project such as marine mechanics and electricians, shipwrights, chandlers, canvasers and trimmers.

Greenwood Forest Glen has already taken over-50s community living to a whole new level, but now with our Stage 4 release, we’re reaching new heights, quite literally. That’s why we’ve dubbed this exclusive release of 31 residences ‘The Heights’.
These elevated blocks with a choice of luxury single-level or double-storey homes with lifts, sit overlooking our 5-hectare private rainforest reserve and with views of the Blackall Ranges.
In every way, these homes reflect the Greenwood philosophy that living in harmony with nature is intimately linked to health and vitality, and it flows through everything from the connected native gardens to the expansive community orchard and vegetable plots.
So, living at ‘The Heights’, you’ll not only enjoy all of the community features and facilities that have made Greenwood a favourite among active and social over 50s, but you might also feel a little bit special.

So, I have found myself back on firm ground after an amazing New Zealand Holiday.
For those that are unaware, New Zealand has phenomenal waves for those prepared to travel, explore and brave the cold waters. Imagine really bad ice cream headaches. Yep, duck diving is something you want to avoid. I had this surfing in France while it was snowing … yikes! I was surfing with the coolest homeless kids of this town. The community helps them and in return they help all the old people who need things done. Imagine if we did that here? No surf, go help someone.
