There is nothing that gets the attention of cruislings more than the word ‘whales’.
During a recent family cruise to the Whitsundays, the captain would only have to utter the word over the loudspeaker and the entire ship would scramble to catch a glimpse of the magnificent mammals.
Apart from their sheer size, there is just something about the majestic creatures that is truly mesmerising as they frolic about, putting on a show for all to see.
But you don’t have to go on a cruise to encounter the magic of sighting humpback whales. We have some of the best whalewatching experiences in the world, right here on our doorstep.

Not all beer and gambling
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Australians withdrew $36 billion in super. So, where did it all go? WORDS: Nathan Wang-Ly and Ben Newell, UNSW Sydney.
What happens when people withdraw their retirement savings early?
We’ve just found out.
During the first year of COVID Australians who faced a 20 per cent decline in their working hours (or turnover for sole traders), who were made unemployed or were on benefits were permitted to take out up to $10,000 of their super between April and June 2020, and a further $10,000 between July and December.
Five million took up the offer. They withdrew $36 billion.
Most of those surveyed by the Institute of Family Studies said they used the money to cover immediate expenses. But definitions of “immediate” can vary.
Real time transaction card data appeared to show early withdrawers boosted their spending by an average of $3000 in the fortnight after they got the money. One interpretation said they spent the money on “beer, wine, pokies, and takeaway food, rather than mortgages, bills, car debts, and clothes”.
In order to get a more complete picture, we obtained access to millions of anonymised transaction records of customers of Australia’s largest bank, the
Commonwealth Bank.
The data included 1.54 million deposits likely to have been money withdrawn through the scheme including 1.04 million we are fairly confident did.
Who dipped into super? The data provided by the bank allows us to compare circumstances of withdrawers and non-withdrawers including their age, time with the bank and banking behaviour before COVID.
We find withdrawers tended to be younger and in poorer financial circumstances than non-withdrawers before the pandemic. Six in 10 of the withdrawers were under the age of 35, a finding consistent with data reported by the Australian Taxation Office.
Withdrawers tended to earn less than non-withdrawers, even non-withdrawers of the same age. Only 17 per cent of withdrawers for whom we could identify an income earned more than $60,000 compared with 26 per cent of nonwithdrawers. And withdrawers had lower median bank balances ($618 versus $986).
For those with credit cards and home loans, withdrawers were about twice as likely to be behind on repayments as non-withdrawers (9.7 per cent versus
5.8 per cent for credit cards, and 8.2 per cent versus 3.4 per cent for home loans).
These characteristics suggest that, despite concerns of the scheme being exploited due to the application process not requiring any documentation, most of those using the scheme genuinely needed the money.
Where did the money go? Compared to non-withdrawers, those who withdrew increased their spending (on both essential and discretionary items), paid back high-interest debts, boosted their savings, and became less likely to miss debt payments.
Withdrawers spent an average of $331 more per month on debit cards in the three months after withdrawal, and $126 per month in the following three months.
They spent an extra $117 per month on credit cards during the first three months, which shrank to an extra $13 per month in the following three months.
The average withdrawer spent 7 per cent more per month on groceries than the average age and income matched non-withdrawer, 12 per cent more on utilities such as gas and electricity, 16 per cent more on discretionary shopping, and 20 per cent more on “entertainment,” a
Commonwealth Bank category that includes gambling.
Less debt, less falling behind – In the three months that followed withdrawing, withdrawers also averaged $437 less credit card debt and $431 less personal loan debt than age and income matched nonwithdrawers, differences that shrank to $301 and $351 in the following three months. They also became less likely to fall behind on credit card and personal loan payments, a difference that vanished after three months.
Our interpretation is that the scheme achieved its intended purpose: it provided many Australians in need with a financial lifeline and helped buoy them during uncertain and turbulent times.
Lessons learned – At the same time, our findings identify areas of concern. The fact that most withdrawals were for the permitted maximum of $10,000 highlights the need to carefully consider the withdrawal limit.
While these sums might simply reflect the true amount of money individuals needed to sustain themselves, it might be that many withdrawers were unsure of how much to withdraw – not knowing how long the pandemic would continue.
Another consideration is how to best support withdrawers after they have taken out the money. More than half were under the age of 35, and might find themselves with a good deal less super than they would have in retirement.
The government has already introduced tax concessions for withdrawers who contribute funds back into their retirement savings accounts. Super funds might also be able to help, by sending targeted messages to those who have withdrawn.

There are fossilised plants in Greenland 1.4 kilometres under ice. The Greenland Ice Sheet covers around 80 per cent of the country. It is thought to be the only relic of the Pleistocene glaciation in the northern hemisphere. In 1966 researchers took a core sample and found well-preserved fossil plants and biomolecules. This means the sheet melted and reformed at least once in the past million years.

Predicting a child’s height will be more accurate after a new study led by Australian scientists.
Dr Loic Yengo and Professor Peter Visscher, from the University of Queensland, worked with 600 researchers in one of the largest-ever genome-wide studies, published in the journal Nature. Dr Yengo says a child’s height is normally predicted using their two biological parents’ average height. But paediatricians will be able to better estimate this using the unlocked data.
“It will put parents’ minds at ease if children are growing as their genes predict, or it will trigger further medical investigation and help pick up potential issues sooner,” he said.

Do you remember? Floppy disks
Floppy disks were a type of data storage medium that appeared in the 1970s. The first was the eight-inch floppy disc, capable of storing 80 kilobytes of data. As the disks got smaller, their storage capacity grew and by the mid-1980s the 3.5-inch floppy disk was able to store 1.44 MB. Floppy disks were vulnerable to magnets and heat, and easily corrupted.
By the 1990s software size meant many disks were required for most applications (for example, Adobe Photoshop required over a dozen disks to run) so CD-ROMs began to take over.

A whale

As debate rages over Queensland’s shark control program, the public desire grows to protect these gentle giants of the deep that never fail to put on a show as they pass our coastline in seemingly greater numbers each year on their annual migration.
WORDS: Ingrid Nelson with AAP.
Thereis nothing quite as spectacular as the sight of a humpback whale up close.
Whether they are launching their enormous bodies out of the ocean or putting on a show by slapping fins for enthralled audiences, whale watching is an experience you’ll never forget.
This year, we have seen a proliferation of the majestic mammals migrating north following their summer of feeding in Antarctic waters. They travel up to 5000 kilometres, with many stopping in the Hervey Bay district to mate and give birth, before moving south back through our waters from September to November.
Thankfully, these charismatic creatures are now protected following needless culling of close to 85,000 humpbacks between the late 1940s and 1962. The International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling the following year, but it’s estimated that the population passing our east coast had dwindled to as little as 100. Thankfully, environmental sanctions have resulted in the population recovering substantially.
About 40,000 humpback whales now pass the Sunshine Coast each year, also giving birth to calves.
“It’s been an an epic year for whale numbers,” Johnny Fell, operations manager and dive instructor at Sunreef Mooloolaba, says.
“It was only earlier this year we heard
the announcement that they have been removed from the threatened species list and we are really seeing that first hand on the Sunshine Coast.
“We have had pretty consistent sightings, even up until now. At this time of year, we would expect to see the whales thinning out, but we are still seeing them off the coastline and in inshore waters.
“Lots of mothers and calves, so it’s been absolutely amazing.”
Named after an obvious hump in front of their small dorsal, humpback whales are known for being one of the most playful species of whale in the ocean, hence their popularity. But it’s the sheer size and elegance of these beautiful creatures that takes your breath away.
“When we are out on Whale One, which is a 20-metre vessel, we often see fully grown humpback whales that come in at around 17 metres – just a couple of metres shorter than the boat. It’s pretty impressive,” Mr Fell says.
“The grace and the majesty of them and how playful they are as well is just amazing. It’s certainly a very impressive thing to see a whale get its whole body out of the water or showing off some of its fin slapping and a swagger of other behaviours that people just can’t get enough of.”
Witnessing whale watchers’ sheer amazement when they experience humpback whales up close for the first
time is something that never gets old for this marine veteran.
Sunreef Mooloolaba has been allowing people to get up close and personal with these magnificent mammals for many decades on the Coast on board the popular Whale One catamaran, which was fully refurbished in 2019, as well as the Swim With The Whales experience for the
more adventurous. “Whales really can be appreciated by everybody. Whale watching on Whale One is suitable for any age or walk of life,” Mr Fell says.
“It’s a large, comfortable boat with multi levels and viewing decks all the way around the boat. So, you will be able to get as close as you can to the whales without getting into the water. We have been doing whale watching on the Coast for many decades and we think the whales actually recognise the boat now.
“We are only able to approach up to 100 metres from the whale. Everything else is up to them. But when we turn the boat off, more often than not, the whales will come closer and give our guests a real show. It’s an awesome experience.”
For those who want to get even closer, the Swim With The Whales experience is the way to go.
“Below the surface, we can approach up to 30 metres of the whales. These whales are intelligent, they are social and very close to us in many respects in terms of personality and inquisitiveness,” Mr Fells says. “When we are in the water with them, they will come as close as they are comfortable with. They have unique personalities. So, they will either come right over to us or swim below us or around us. It’s 100 per cent organic and all on the whale’s terms.”
In celebration of the season, Sunreef Mooloolaba also launched a 24-metre

whale-watching boat to give guests the best experience to see these majestic animals up close in their natural environment.
The T6 has been brought down from Cairns for the season in anticipation of continuing company growth.
“T6 is an incredible vessel for up to 100 guests with great whale-watching viewing on the top deck, both inside and outside, and great viewing on the bow, stern and inside on the bottom level as well,” Sunreef Mooloolaba’s Dan Hart says. “We are trialling T6 to see how she could potentially extend our whalewatching, scuba-diving and snorkelling offerings throughout the year.”
THE SHARK NET DEBATE
Despite their growing numbers, humpback whales still face many threats.
Humans remain the primary threat to the mammals, commonly via entanglement in shark nets and fishing gear, boat strikes and pollution.
Fisheries Queensland estimates 40,000 whales migrate along Queensland’s coastline each year, with six entanglements reported on average. Since 2013, there have been 57 entanglements, with 55 whales released alive.
Queensland’s shark control program includes nets and drumlines at 86
beaches. Trials are underway for new technology including drones and catch-alert “smart” drumlines. Electronic warning devices such as acoustic pingers are also used to alert whales and dolphins of nearby nets. It’s a contentious issue and one that has caused a divided argument between environmentalists and the government for many years.
“The minister’s own scientific experts advised him to trial a removal of the nets during the whale-migration season,” marine biologist with Humane Society International Lawrence Chlebeck says.
“Each year that the advice is not acted on will only see more whales entangled.”
A Shark Control Program Working Group supported trialling the replacement of some nets with drumlines in 2020, but Queensland Fisheries Minister Mark Furner says human life will always come first.
“We are investing in research and technology, but we simply will not make changes to the program unless we are convinced they are safe in Queensland conditions,” he says.
“Our contractors and marine animal rescue teams do amazing work to minimise impacts on other marine life, while maintaining a (shark control) program that has helped to keep Queenslanders safe since 1962.”
Fun facts
• Humpback tail patterns are unique.
• They have the longest migration on the planet.
• Not all populations migrate.
• Their songs can last for hours.
• Humpbacks have baleen plates instead of teeth.
• They eat thousands of kilograms of food per day.
• They can live up to 90 years.
• Baby humpbacks weigh about 20,000 kilograms.
• Fully grown, they can weigh up to 30 tonnes.
• Female humpback whales are usually larger than males.
Sea Shepherd Australia is also calling on the state government to replace shark nets with modern alternatives.
“Whales are one of the most iconic marine species on this planet, and the feats they make as they circumnavigate the world are beyond astounding,” campaigner Lauren Sandeman says.
“By keeping shark nets in their path against scientific advice, each year we purposely endanger them with a slow and gruelling death.”
Mr Fell says while he can appreciate both sides of the argument, it doesn’t make it any easier to witness these intelligent creatures caught in the nets.
“It’s a tragedy, that’s for sure,” he says.
“Whenever we hear about a whale being caught in the shark nets, it’s the last thing we want to hear. It’s sad, because these animals are hyper intelligent.
“I can fully understand those who argue human life is the most important thing but we are out there every day with these animals and witnessing the beauty and majesty and intelligence of them.
“It strikes hard. I don’t profess to be an expert on the topic, but what I do know is that there are some emerging technologies that seem to be producing a better outcome for humans and animals – non-lethal, deterring devices rather than the Queensland (shark control) program, which was designed a long time ago.
“I believe a bigger picture, longer term solution is what we are after.
“It’s not just the whales that are getting harmed in these nets, it’s turtles spotted eagle rays, as well as dolphins and a whole swagger of marine life.
Most of these sharks being caught in the nets are not what are considered target species.
“It’s about the broader ecology of the environment.”
KEEP A SAFE DISTANCE
The Department of Environment and Science stresses that with high whale numbers this year, it’s important that boaties, jet ski users and anglers keep back a safe legal distance.
• Boaties and fishers must not be closer than 100 metres from a whale and 50 metres from a dolphin.
• Jet skis cannot approach within 300 metres of whales or dolphins.
• Boat operators should also be mindful of the ‘three-boat rule’ in which a boat cannot be any closer than 300 metres from whales and 150 metres from dolphins if three boats are already present.
• A $718 fine and other penalties may apply to those breaching these approach distances.

COURTING NEW GOALS
Sunshine Coast Lightning has recruited a new head coach to steer our premiership-winning netball team toward the future.
Reynolds was chosen after an intensive recruitment process involving a coach-selection panel of Lightning CEO Danielle Smith and Lightning and Melbourne Storm senior leadership staff.
She was strongly endorsed by the Lightning’s inaugural premiershipwinning head coach Dame Noeline Taurua.
“Belinda gave an excellent presentation that clearly demonstrated her strategic vision for Lightning and critical success factors based on performance, connection and character,” Taurua says.
“She demonstrated a sound knowledge on planning, coaching and training/game environments, and has vast hands-on experience at SSN level.
From my knowledge and experience at Lightning, I felt that she would be an ideal fit for the team, club and community.”
Ms Smith congratulates Reynolds on her appointment and says her experience, strategic and people-first focus made her the ideal fit for the club.
A new initiative aims to gain traction across Australia to help alert motorists to drivers returning to the road after trauma.
The
region’s only national sporting team has announced its new head coach to carry the talent squad into the 2023 season and beyond.
Belinda Reynolds will take over the coaching reins of the back-to-back premiership-winning netball team, Sunshine Coast Lightning.
The two-year deal sees Reynolds, a former Perth Orioles player and current West Coast Fever assistant coach, relocate to our region to join Lightning ahead of the 2023 Suncorp Super Netball season.
Reynolds brings a wealth of experience, coaching in highperformance roles, notably for the past five years in her previous position in which the team achieved three grand final appearances and one premiership.
She was also head coach of the West Coast Fever Reserves that competed in the 2022 Australian National Championships.
“I am grateful to be given the privilege to coach the Sunshine Coast Lightning and lead the team into the 2023 season,”
Reynolds says.
“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with the talented Lightning players and look forward to working alongside the wider performance team. Sunshine Coast Lightning is a proud and successful club who, in partnership with the Storm Group, hold values that I feel inspired and connected to.
“My family and I are looking forward to moving to the wonderful Sunshine Coast and sharing the journey with the loyal and passionate Lightning members and fans.”
“We feel that Belinda will be an excellent fit for our club culture with her personable approach, focus on relationships and player wellbeing, and open communication style,” she says.
“She brings fantastic leadership qualities with a passionate and ambitious desire to succeed, both on and off the court. We are thrilled to welcome Belinda and her family to the Lightning family and look forward to helping them settle into their new home on the Sunshine Coast and engaging with the community.”
Reynolds will initially work in a remote capacity before relocating to the Coast in the coming weeks.
Some of her first tasks will involve building connections within the club, finalising the playing squad – including training partners and a temporary replacement player for the injured Reilley Batcheldor – and appointing her coaching support team.
Mycar is launching Return Plates, or R Plates, which can be displayed the same as learner or provisional plates. The R Plate signifies to other road users that the driver may need extra care and patience, giving them time and space to recover.
While physical injuries mend quickly, these plates will help address mental trauma that can often take time to overcome.
Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne Dr Jason Thompson says: “Returning to the road can be a scary and nerve-wracking experience, so even just having those feelings recognised could help people to recover faster.”
The Queensland Road Crash Weekly Report from Transport and Main Roads indicates 118 hospitalisations in 2022 as a result of a road incident for the North Coast police region, which includes the Sunshine Coast. Mycar is hoping is to have R Plates adopted and recognised nationwide and is encouraging Australians to sign a pledge to help the initiative gain government regulator support.
Drivers can order an R Plate or sign the pledge digitally at mycar.com.au/rplates.
PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS FICKLE STATE OF RENTAL MARKET
The dire state of the Sunshine Coast housing market and the unexpected stories of heartbreak from the current crisis are being highlighted in a new podcast series, titled Homes for Everyone.
Spearheaded by local businessman Mal Cayley, the first episode features Brightwater woman Nicole Stevens, who lost all the security of a home during COVID-19, despite having a well-paid full-time job and excellent rental history.
“I got a phone call from our property manager saying the owner had decided to sell,” Ms Stevens says on the podcast.
“The property sold very quickly and it was to owner-occupiers.
“So, we were told at the end of our lease
we would have to move out. We got to two days before that date and I didn’t have a home so I booked a storage facility and it was the worst feeling in the world.”
Ms Stevens was offered a short-term studio granny flat by a friend, while she continued to search for somewhere to live with her three children: “I felt I had failed my children as a parent – it was unbelievable to me that I couldn’t provide them a bed each.”
Mr Cayley says it is normal for feelings of failure to linger, and that is why the podcast is so integral: “We are hearing these same stories of shame and fear daily now that we have launched the Homes for Everyone initiative.”
The podcast is on Spotify or iHeartRadio.

DISRUPTING THE THREAT OF VIOLENCE
Hope says the new Save a Life Tonight (SALT) initiative will focus on prevention and early intervention.
“There is nothing like this in Australia,” Ms Hope says.
“For just $300, you could literally save a life. We want to offer families an option before an incident of family violence occurs.
“(SALT) will see families at threat of
village” ethos, SALT will also provide an instant support system and help to reduce domestic violence exposure to children.
“Most domestic violence assistance programs take days, if not weeks, to access,” Ms Hope says.
“We want to stop DV before it starts, to ensure risky and violent behaviour doesn’t become normalised in our homes. By giving people a night’s accommodation and a meal, we are giving them a choice, so they don’t have to remain in a volatile situation.
“Through this immediate interruption, we can then support people to make empowered decisions and provide family counselling.”
The SunnyKids Mayoral Ball is on October 29 at Venue 114, Bokarina.
An Australian-first initiative to immediately disrupt the threats and potential of domestic violence will be officially launched at the SunnyKids Mayoral Ball this month.
SunnyKids provides emergency accommodation, domestic violence (DV)

Believe it or not, the photos you can see (pictured right) are of Mooloolaba Road, Buderim, from 1924 and 1925.
Mooloolaba Road ran from Buderim to the coastline through thick rainforest.
During the 1920s and 1930s, the roads were rough, unsealed and frequently in a poor state. Some road surfaces even had a corduroy pattern of tree logs over the boggy sections.
The other picture is of the first bus Charles Clarke built to take passengers from Buderim to Mooloolaba. He built this 11-seater passenger with a new Ford Model T chassis and started the first regular service to Mooloolaba in 1922.
In 1924, Charles obtained the rights to carry mail from Buderim to Mooloolaba.
If you’d like to see more great pics like these, head to council’s heritage webpage, heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au, and type ‘Picture Sunshine Coast’ into the search bar.
You’ll find more than 17,000 images that show the history and development of the Sunshine Coast – great for school
Volunteers needed
Do you love the Eric Joseph Foote War Memorial Sanctuary? Well, why not lend a hand in keeping it in tip-top condition by volunteering for the Foote Sanctuary Association.
The group meets at the sanctuary in Park Lane, Buderim, every Thursday from 8-10am and welcomes volunteers with open arms and a cuppa afterwards.
The association also has a proposal to construct an environmental information centre at the sanctuary and needs more members with interest and skills to assist with fundraising and bringing the project to reality. If you’d like to help, visit footesanctuarybuderim.com.
POLICE TALK
Sunshine Coast Police are urging the community to be scam aware and avoid becoming a victim.
Unfortunately, the door-to-door traders are back to their old tricks, trying to scam unsuspecting and vulnerable people on the Sunshine Coast.
Recently, there have been several reports made to police regarding suspicious behaviour by traders knocking on doors and offering bitumen-laying services at a discounted price. The trader commonly states that a bitumen-laying job was completed in the vicinity and leftover bitumen can be offered at a substantial discount.
If the traders try to get payment straight away, that is a red flag you are being scammed as they are not complying with the law. Door-to-door traders must advise consumers about a 10-day cooling-off period, and they must not accept payment or begin any services during that time.
The traders try to put consumers on the spot to make a decision. Shop around, compare prices, check reviews, keep receipts and do not give out personal information. Ask for a business card or identification, and do not pay for any services until they have been provided.
Consumers can request a ‘Do-notknock’ sticker from the Department of Fair Trading at qld.gov.au/law/fairtrading. It is an offence under the Australian Consumer Law for door-todoor traders to approach a residence that displays one of these stickers. Report suspicious behaviour or suspected scamming to Policelink 131444, Fair Trading, the Scamwatch website and Australian Cyber Security Centre.
This column is compiled by the Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit. If you have information for police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersqld.com.au, or Policelink at police.qld.gov.au/reporting.

Italyand London are calling three Sunshine Coast ballerinas who are well on the road to prima status.
Maci Smith, 10, Stella Jackson, 11, and Violet Teubler, 11, have secured places in elite international summer schools after competing at one of the world’s largest ballet competitions: the Youth America Grand Prix.
The girls train at Sunshine Coast Conservatory of Dance in Kuluin as part of the Excellence in Classical Training program, under the guidance of director Karen Manley and teachers Marie Walton-Mahon and Anne Fraser.
The program means that the gifted ballet students can train at home rather
EN POINTE TO GREATNESS
than move to larger dance centres in Brisbane, the Gold Coast or Melbourne.
“In their second year with the new program and after a year of intense training, the girls are very excited to have done so well in the Youth America Grand Prix semi-finals – their first time competing in it,” Ms Manley says. “The three girls are beyond excited to be able to have the opportunity to represent Australia and the Sunshine Coast at these events and to experience ballet training at such prestigious events overseas.”
Maci has been awarded a full scholarship to the Birmingham Royal Ballet Summer Program at Elmhurst Ballet School in London in 2023 and acceptance
into the Nervi International Dance Festival in Italy in 2023.
“She is the great niece of Elaine Fifield who was a principal dancer in the Australian Ballet program and was the first Australian to become a ballerina in the English Royal Ballet,” Ms Manley says.
“Maci also won the Brisbane Performing Arts Challenge (BPAC) Junior Classical Scholarship and the BPAC Junior Contemporary Scholarship earlier this year, plus a scholarship to the Australian Ballet School amongst other incredible achievements this year.”
Violet and Stella have both been accepted to the International Summer School Italia in 2023. Stella will join Maci at the Nervi International Dance Festival.
Ms Manley says the girls balance school with a full dance schedule, excelling in class and on the dance floor.
“The girls are balancing their training with attending regular schooling, thanks to the support of their schools,” she says.
“They train all day on Mondays, Saturdays and afternoons during the week. Violet attends Nambour State College and thanks to the support of her school, even though she misses some regular classes, has still managed to win an academic excellence medal last year, make it into extension maths group and been offered a place in one of the high school’s pinnacle excellence programs next year.”
The young dancers are also preparing to compete for the first time in the prestigious Alana Haines Australasian Awards in New Zealand next year.
HAVE A SAY ON IDEAS FOR HINTERLAND VILLAGE
Hinterland residents keen to ensure the Glass House Mountains thrives as a vibrant and activated hub can have their say through a pilot project dubbed Sunshine Coast Community Co-Lab.
A community engagement project for the village will launch through the pilot model, providing an opportunity that brings together residents, staff and students from the University of theof the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) and Sunshine Coast Council.
Division one councillor Rick Baberowski says this project will explore and evaluate potential design and placemaking ideas to improve, improve, re-define or even transform the village.
“In November, keep an eye out forkeep UniSC students who will be in the village undertaking field work engaging directly with the Glass House Mountains community,” he says.
“They want to understand what you love about the township and will alsothe workshop placemaking ideas and opportunities for the village.”the

This exhibition celebrates the Omie Peoples’ sacred tapa making tradition. Sacred because the first tapa or beaten bark cloth is central to the Omie peoples’ creation and origin story: “When the first man to arrive on Earth, Mina, told the first woman, Saja, to go down to the river, find the right tree, remove its bark, beat it on the river stones, then soak it in mud; together they were setting up the first Omie, cultural ritual. Saja came back wearing it, thus sanctifying the first marriage.” Omie tapa, both painted and appliquéd, is considered the most dramatic, colourful and compositionally diverse in the Pacific region. Their two traditional styles, the nioge and sihot’e are presented to you in this exhibition in infinite variation.

BEWARE: WARNING FATIGUE AHEAD
Jane Stephens is worried that in a politicallycorrect world gone mad, we may miss paying attention to the really important stuff.
Ilabels
are everywhere – to the point where it can be hard to see the forest for the falling trees.
Caution: this coffee is hot. Alert: severe weather activity is on its way. Stop: Water over road. Warning: the following story may upset some viewers.
Signs in red. Flashing LED words. Diversions. High-vis clothing that has become so ubiquitous that low-vis is now more eye-catching. It is all a bit much, overloading the senses and leading to thinking that warnings are just another tool in a politically-correct world gone mad. It all begins to grey together.
Our fatigue about warnings is similar to the drip-drip effect of trauma. Too many unpleasantries can lead to compassion fatigue: emotional exhaustion that causes a diminished ability to feel compassion for others.
Similarly, there are so many warnings out there that we risk skimming over them and missing the ones we should really sit up for. Warnings are issued about actions that have miniscule risk or where the chances of disaster are tiny. Humans are
wired to comply only if they perceive the risk of danger is great.
Living a little bit on the edge is in human DNA. And how do you brace yourself when you are warned something might cause distress? In even those who cover their eyes, a small part wants to take a little peek through the finger cracks.
Such was the case when a distress warning was issued about the horrific massacre at the Thailand childcare centre.
How could anyone not be distressed about a person killing 24 little children at nap time? Whose heart would not lurch in horror at news about what happened to those tiny treasures and their carers?
For many years, designers focused their energies on sensory aspects of warnings: colour, location, shape, and whether to use pictures or text. But recent research suggests that effective warning design depends as much on what is in the viewer’s head as what the warning message is about.
If only authorities would worry less about offsetting potential litigation or strategically deflecting blame and keep the warning powder dry for when we really must pay attention.
IT’S ALL HORSES FOR COURSES
It’s a safe bet that Ashley Robinson won’t be donning his white shoes and swanky clothes for a ‘Noosa-inspired’ day at the races.
an email a couple of weeks ago that set my thought path off on a different tangent – but one I have been down before. It was an invitation (to a mere mortal like me) to attend a race meeting at Sunshine Coast Turf Club.
Ireceived
It went like this: “Escape the ordinary in style for this long weekend. Immerse in the pure joy of a day at the races. Dine out in your Noosa-inspired attire for a social racing extravaganza. Spend a race day in the lap of luxury with a long lunch on the lawn at the Noosa Cup”, blah blah blah.
At first, I thought it must have been written by the same guy who, some years back, said Noosa Tourism had to be careful not to damage its brand by promoting the region as a whole with Visit Sunshine Coast, rather than the special place ‘up there’ going it alone.
Only one problem: the invite was for an event at Caloundra, not Noosa, as it has no suitable venue. Everyone would have to come south.
But I was wrong. The Noosa Cup Race Day was actually a strategy that came from the hard-working souls at the turf
club, to go along with the Caloundra Cup and the Mooloolaba Cup.
Of course, it didn’t stop me thinking about what the Noosa folk would bring with them if it was their idea: white shoes, straw boater hats, parasols, an array of German cars, a few celebrity chefs and the fine fare of Noosa. And all the horses would be Victorian thoroughbreds. There would probably be a limo or two full of AFL greats, and possibly some rarefied air.
Last time I wrote about this, there was a suggestion that Caloundra might become the new Noosa, as a development company was promoting to Victorians eager to get out of their bitter winter and ordinary premier. Caloundra: now the venue for the Noosa Cup – it’s a good idea the turf club has.
But maybe Mudjimba could be the new Noosa. It has carparks and half as many roundabouts, a beautiful beach, a river close by and an AFL ground that is hardly ever used. It has an airport and an island to look at that isn’t owned by Richard Branson – and you don’t have to be a millionaire to visit. Perfect. The Mudjimba Cup certainly is more my style.
Ashley Robinson is the manager of Alex Surf Club and the chairman of the Sunshine Coast Falcons.

FESTIVE FILM TREATS ARE GOLD
Sami Muirhead is quite entertained by the idea of every awesome Christmas holiday trip to the movies acting like a sequel to the year before.
We are tipped to spend $64 billion on the festive season this year in Australia. Forget Holy Night. What about holy commercialism.
And I must admit (with glee) that I will be giving it a damn good nudge when it comes to melting my credit card.
This is a very irresponsible attitude.
But a fun one! Christmas is my favourite time of the year and while I plan on making sure everyone has something to bring them a little sparkle in their day, I have one item that is top of my wish list (other than a beachfront shack in Noosa that comes with a butler and private chef called Gerard who whips up prawn rolls for breakfast in bed).
Gold Class movie tickets are the top of my greed tree. While many of my friends are training for marathons and eating vegan organic food, I am all about sitting in those big fat recliners and hoovering trays of sliders and nachos. I love to wash it all down with a couple of red wines and follow up with ice-cream and chocolate topping that is served in those round goldfish bowls.
You know the ones I mean!
I have only ever gone to Gold Class twice in my life. I married a Catholic but I always joke I should be one, too, because I
feel so guilty if I just sit still and bludge.
Anyway, here’s hoping this will be the summer of stuffing my face with bad food and flittering away time in the airconditioned luxury of movie theatres. There are some blockbusters coming, too.
Mrs Harris Goes To Paris sounds a mustsee because it has the word ‘Paris’ in the title. I pick my movies the way I pick my bottles of wine sometimes: it just has to
look pretty. The long-awaited sequel to Avatar is coming to the big screen and the follow-up movie to Black Panther also looks incredible. But the big one for me: I Want To Dance With Somebody. It is a biographical music drama film based on the life of Whitney Houston. My husband has already told me he will be sick the day I go to see this new release about Whitney. That simply means more ice-cream for Greedy Guts from those big fat goldfish bowls.

Cake with Salted Maple Butterscotch and Pecan Crumble
Ingredients
• 115g White Wings plain flour, sifted
• 90g roasted pecans
• 2 tsp McKenzie’s ground cinnamon
• 1 tsp McKenzie’s ground ginger
• ½ tsp each ground cloves and McKenzie’s ground nutmeg
• 225g (1½ cups) White Wings selfraising flour, sifted
• 175g unsalted butter
• 85g CSR caster sugar
• 85g CSR brown sugar
• 180ml (¾ cup) maple syrup
Method
1. Preheat oven to 160°C, fan-forced. Grease and line two 20cm round Food Guru non-stick cake tins with baking paper. Place plain flour, pecans and spices in a food processor and blitz until finely ground. Transfer to a large bowl with self-raising flour and whisk to combine, then set aside.
2. Cook butter in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes until nut brown. Reduce the heat to medium. Add the sugars and maple syrup plus orange rind and stir to combine. Remove from the heat, then whisk in the buttermilk. Set aside for 10 minutes to cool, then add the eggs and whisk until smooth.
3. Make a well in the bowl with dry ingredients, then gently whisk in wet ingredients until a smooth batter forms (don’t over mix). Divide evenly among prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes or until the centre springs back when lightly pressed. Cool in the tins for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
4. For salted maple butterscotch, place maple syrup in a medium

saucepan over medium-high heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3-4 minutes until caramelised. Remove from the heat, add butter and salt, then whisk to combine. Add cream and bourbon, then whisk until smooth. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until chilled.
5. For pecan crumble, line a large baking tray with baking paper. Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the butter and, using your fingers, rub with the dry mixture to combine. Spread out over the prepared tray and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and cool completely.
6. Prepare CSR Butterscotch Buttercream as directed. Transfer buttercream to a large piping bag, fitted with a 2cm round nozzle.
7. Trim the cake tops to be level. Place one cake layer on a serving platter. Pipe over half the icing in a circular motion, drizzle with some salted maple caramel and scatter over half the crumble. Top with the remaining layer of cake, pipe over remaining icing, scatter with pecan crumble and extra pecans. Drizzle with maple caramel sauce to serve.

Jackfruit stuffed sweet potatoes
Makes: 3 large sweet potatoes | Time: 1 hour
If you’re looking to limit your meat intake, jackfruit is a delicious plant-based alternative to add to your weekly shop. Add to pasta bakes, salads, burgers, nachos and Kunara’s favourite: stuffed potatoes. This easy teriyaki marinade helps to caramelise and crisp up the pulled pork-style jackfruit. Stuff it into sweet potatoes and you have such an easy snack or dinner at your fingertips.
Ingredients
• 1 box of Upton Naturals
Original Jackfruit (find in store at Kunara Organic Marketplace)
• 1 cup water
• 1/4 cup tamari
• 4 teaspoons rapadura sugar
• 1 tablespoon maple syrup
• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
To serve
• 3 large organic sweet potatoes
• 1 red chilli pepper, sliced thinly
• Black sesame seeds
• Handful of coriander
• Sea salt
• Black pepper
Method
1. Preheat oven to 2000C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2. Add the water, tamari, sugar, maple syrup and garlic powder to a medium bowl and whisk well to combine.
3. Add the jackfruit and use your fingers to break up any large pieces of the fruit. Coat the jackfruit in the marinade and set aside while you bake the potatoes.
4. Pierce the top of each sweet potato with a fork five times and place them onto the baking tray. Rub with olive oil, sprinkle with and pepper and bake in the oven for 50 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and cooked through.
5. Remove the potatoes from the oven. Using a knife, quickly slice each potato almost in half to release some steam and allow them to cool faster.
6. Pan fry the jackfruit in a large frying pan over a high heat, adding a few tablespoons of the marinade as the jackfruit absorbs it. Fry until the jackfruit is crispy and caramelised.
7. Stuff the potatoes with jackfruit and top with chili pepper, black sesame seeds, coriander, sea salt and pepper.

COUPLE LOVING NEW LIFE IN A CONNECTED COMMUNITY
Having come from a property in rural Queensland, Robert and Lesley Thompson are thoroughly enjoying life at Halcyon Nirimba, in Stockland’s master-planned Aura community.
“We are very grateful every single day we live here and it has far exceeded our expectations, even though they were high,” Lesley said.
“That’s our philosophy, though –there’s so much here to enjoy.”
The Thompsons decided to make the move from their acreage property in Kilkivan, near Gympie, and were drawn to Stockland as Robert once worked for the company.
Immanuel Gardens Home Care
“We loved living at Kilkivan,” Lesley said. “But we knew we would have to make the move as there were no medical facilities nearby and, as you get older, that is a consideration.”
Robert added: “And when we saw it was Stockland building the community, we knew it would be good.
“We said, ‘This is for us and if we’re ever going to do it, now is the time’.”
The couple recently celebrated their first year anniversary at Halcyon Nirimba, which enjoys access to more than 200km of walking and cycling paths connecting homeowners to a network of shops and facilities.
“It’s been a wonderful year and community living is great because you have the option of joining in with activities or other events and groups,” Lesley said.
Robert added: “It’s nice to have people around you as you can be with them when you choose and we all have fun, but then you can have peace and quiet when you want it as well.”
Robert and Lesley have two sons in Brisbane and a daughter and granddaughter living nearby on the Sunshine Coast.
“All the kids are on board with our decision and it’s great as we see them quite regularly,” Lesley said.
Their children will not be the only family nearby: Lesley’s sister and her husband are also moving to the community.
“They will be in a different street to us, but we get along really well and love spending time with them,” Lesley said.
“Some people even think we’re twins.”
Robert added: “It will be great in future years to have that family support and care for each other so close.”
Call 1800 050 050 for more information on Halcyon Nirimba or to organise an inspection of the community facilities and display homes.

MONTH OF FUN CRAMMED INTO ONE BIG SOCIAL WEEK
October is Queensland Seniors Month.
So, with the theme of “Social Connections” in mind, Suncare celebrated its customers, inviting them to bring their friends to enjoy a week of social interaction and fun activities.
The Suncare Community Centre was a hive of activity. From indoor bowls in the newly renovated hall to cards and crafts in the activity room, there truly was something for everyone.
Jamming with Jheff saw customers playing the drums and singing karaoke to ABBA and other golden hits. Foot tapping even led to a dance or two and laughter joined the sounds of the piano as Jheff led his customers in song.
Wednesday saw Lyndon and the amazing team from Mix FM join in for the
morning. The sausage sizzle put on by Mix FM was enjoyed by customers, staff and even those working in the surrounding buildings. Thank you to the MIX FM team for joining in the fun.
The Friday lunch was cooked with care by Meals on Wheels Maroochydore, which operates from the Suncare Activity Centre and makes morning teas a treat to remember, too. Customers and their invited guests enjoyed more song and dance through performances by Totally Charlie and the Tap Cats, ending a week of celebration and fun.
The centre offers activities well beyond Queensland Seniors Month and continues to create opportunities for older residents to live healthy, active and social lives.
To find out more, contact Suncare at 1800 786 227 or visit the website at suncare. org.au.

A HEALTHY BODY IMAGE IS MORE THAN JUST SKIN DEEP
Having a healthy body image is important for both physical and mental health.
External pressure from the media or even family can influence us towards unhealthy habits, such as crash dieting and over-exercising.
A negative body image can impact mental health through low self-esteem, anxiety and depression.
A positive view of our body, despite its flaws or imperfections, steers us towards better physical and mental health, so we’re more likely to have healthier habits, including eating well and exercising regularly. We’re also less likely to practise unhealthy behaviours such as smoking or drinking too much.
Creating and maintaining a healthy body image can be difficult, but it’s worth the effort. Here are a few tips to help you get started:
• Be critical of the media. The images you see in magazines, on TV and online are often photoshopped or unrealistic.
• Surround yourself with positive people. Spend time with those who make you feel good about yourself.
• Focus on your health, not your weight.
• Be accepting of your body. Everyone is different and that’s okay.
Sun Sculpt Body Contouring and Muscle Rehab offers treatments that can assist in achieving a healthier body image.
Clinic owner and practitioner Emma Wallace, a Registered Nurse with over 30 years of experience, will tailor a targeted and individualised treatment plan for you, designed to assist with healthier muscles and smoother skin.
Contact Emma at Sun Sculpt on 0448 441 509 or book your complimentary consultation at www.sunsculpt.com.au.
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT HEARING LOSS
We all know hearing loss creeps up on us.
It’s easy to keep ignoring it but at some stage, hearing loss is going to cause problems for you and those around you.
It is not uncommon to have a married couple in front of me in my clinic and the husband (who has just had a hearing test) swears blind that he is okay, while the
long-suffering spouse says exactly the opposite.
She then starts to list all the areas where the husband misses out on hearing things. The husband nods, and then repeats that his hearing is okay.
The situation would be funny if it wasn’t such a serious problem.
The typical Aussie bloke’s attitude of “she’ll be right mate” just doesn’t cut it.
Hearing loss generally doesn’t get better. Untreated hearing loss is associated with so many quality-of-life threatening issues that it should not be ignored. The direct correlation between untreated hearing loss and early-onset dementia, depression, injury-causing falls and even heart disease makes it a number-one health issue.
If you have not had a baseline hearing test by the time you are 50, it is time to get one. The test is quick and easy and allows individuals to monitor their own hearing health. At this stage, it’s wise to choose a hearing clinic as opposed to a hearing-aid shop. What you are after is a measure of your hearing health.

LuxSmart: a new generation of advanced lenses
Choosing the best lens for implantation at the time of cataract surgery can be tricky to navigate. We are fortunate to be living in an age which affords us a wide selection, but which one is the best for you?
Several factors can help guide your decision. Fundamentally, matching your lifestyle and expectations are key.
Whether it’s playing bowls, golf or sewing, the new-generation, advancedtechnology intraocular lens (IOL) implants can keep you doing the things you love.
The latest offering is LuxSmart: an extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens which has been providing exceptional results.
It delivers seamless vision from 66cm to six metres, with good performance in low lighting as well. LuxSmart has been delivering exceptional results. Patients love the spectacle independence gained from it.
In addition, this lens delivers vision free of haloes and rings – an absolute bonus.
Cataract surgery extends beyond just getting rid of the cataract. It is about striving to provide you with the best-possible vision for years to come.
For a personalised consult, obtain a referral from your optometrist or GP.
Bursitis help doesn’t have to be surgery
Hip bursitis is the popular term for the common condition trochanteric pain syndrome (TPS).
This condition causes pain in the lateral (outside) part of the upper thigh, just over the bony prominence called the trochanter, which is part of the femur (thigh bone).
TPS typically affects females over the age of 40 and can be quite debilitating.
A bursa is a fluid-filled sac which allows soft tissues to glide over bony prominences.
You have them all over your body around your joints. Although the trochanteric bursa can become inflamed in TPS, the primary problem is degeneration of some of the powerful tendons around the hip joint, particularly gluteus medius and gluteus minimus.
Management of TPS is almost always non-surgical, although it can be quite a frustrating condition for patients who suffer with it and for clinicians treating it.
Often patients will be referred for a steroid injection into the bursa, which may provide some temporary relief, but typically doesn’t address the underlying problem.
Management for this problem includes physiotherapy and platelet rich plasma injections into the degenerative gluteal tendons.
Disc herniation
The spine is made up of multiple segments and each segment is made up of bones or vertebrae, joints, nerves, ligaments, muscles and discs.
The discs between the vertebrae are the shock absorbers of the spine and cushion the vertebrae during movement. The discs are made up of a jelly-like substance that can degenerate as part of the normal ageing process or become injured from high-impact sport or heavy lifting.
When this happens, the jelly can bulge or herniate, which sometimes leads to compression of the nerves.
This can cause significant pain, pins and needles, burning and numbness down the arms or legs – depending on if the nerve compression is in the cervical or lumbar spine.
Most disc bulges resolve themselves within four to six weeks and this can be aided with physiotherapy, rest, antiinflammatory medications and even targeted nerve-blocking injections.
If these symptoms are something you are experiencing, and they persist beyond four to six weeks, speaking with a specialist neurosurgeon about treatment options may be beneficial.

Free support for breast cancer patients, families
This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic (SCHOC) is celebrating its resident McGrath Breast Care Nurse, Cathy Apelt.
Cathy has been a McGrath Breast Care Nurse since 2012, and a Registered Nurse since 1977. She provides psycho-social, physical and emotional support to people with breast cancer and their families.
“Breast cancer can be a challenging time for both the patient and their family,” Cathy says. “I’m passionate about providing individualised care for each of my patients, discussing their concerns and questions and ensuring they are empowered to make decisions about their treatment.”
These nurses support patients in many ways by providing medical support, acting as a point of contact between a patient and their medical team, and decoding medical jargon. This support is available for free and without a doctor’s referral. People on the Sunshine Coast and surrounding areas living with breast cancer can reach out directly to Cathy on cathy.apelt@schoc. com.au or 0419 941 249.

HOROSCOPES
ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20)
Tuesday’s solar eclipse highlights close relationships, shared finances and/or trust issues. Watch your enthusiasm for a project doesn’t overtake your ability to knuckle down and get the job done. If you promise more than you can deliver, people will just end up disappointed
LEO (JUL 24-AUG 23)
Leos love to be the top cat but this week you need to ask yourself, “am I leading others or just bossing them around?”. If you power ahead without considering other people, then you’ll create unnecessary drama. Do your best to accommodate their needs.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)
Sagittarians can be feisty and unpredictable souls, but don’t allow yourself to be drawn into a heated exchange. It would be better to watch the fireworks from the sidelines. With the solar eclipse, Venus and Mercury in your privacy zone, slow down and rejuvenate.
TAURUS (APR 21-MAY 21)
Bulls prefer to plod along in a methodical fashion but, this week, you could be dogged by unexpected dramas. Pluto squares Mercury, so daily life could be intense and rather disruptive. If you are mentally flexible, then you’ll easily handle the hurly-burly.
VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)
When it comes to the way you think, blast out of a boring rut and jump into an exciting new phase. The solar eclipse, Venus and Mercury (your ruler) are all visiting your communication zone, so stop avoiding issues and start discussing what you really need.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)
Examine all possibilities this week, especially ones that come from left field. With the solar eclipse, Venus and Mercury moving through your hopes-and-wishes zone, it’s important to have ambitious long-term goals. Be patient though, and focus on a practical plan.
QUIZ
1. Prosciutto is a dry-cured meat from which animal?
2. Is Noam Chomsky a famous: a) philosopher b) composer or c) motorcycle racer?
3. What is the capital of Peru?
4. A kobold is a spirit or goblin in which country’s folklore?
5. What term describes words such as ‘doubleplusgood’ and ‘unperson’ in George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four?
GEMINI (MAY 22-JUN 21)
The solar eclipse and Venus promise improved relations with a friend, client or colleague, but the Mercury/Pluto square highlights hiccups in your financial management in the form of a large bill, an unexpected expense or a retrospective tax debt.
LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)
Tuesday’s solar eclipse signals a fresh start involving finances and/ or self-esteem. Learn to manage money better – and learn to love yourself. Jupiter jumps back into your work zone until December 20.
A lucky opportunity could be heading your way.
AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
With the solar eclipse, Venus and Mercury stimulating your career zone, start thinking about strategic ways to maximise your professional potential. It’s also a good week to get feedback from your bosses, clients or customers.
6. What is US actor Will Smith’s (pictured) full name?
7. And what stage name did he go by as a rapper in the 1980s and early 1990s?
8. Who is the current king of Saudi Arabia?
9. Which one of Canada’s seven provinces is officially bilingual?
10. Does iron or cobalt have a higher atomic weight?
CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)
This week (courtesy of the solar eclipse and the Pluto/Mercury square) focus on platonic and romantic relationships. Avoid making assumptions! Communicate your expectations and then double-check what others expect from you in return.
SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)
This week the solar eclipse, Venus and Mercury are transiting through your sign, but the Mercury/Pluto square could rattle your Scorpio resilience. It’s time to bounce back, as you demonstrate and celebrate your strengths – including passion, determination and discretion.
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Are your aspirations for the future ambitious enough? Bountiful, expansive Jupiter transits back into your sign until December 20, which favours ruminating over big-picture ideas. The solar eclipse stimulates creative thinking and encourages you to come up with a cracking plan

CAMPAIGNS COME INTO PLAY
Housing prices on the Sunshine Coast have fallen by 6.9 per cent since May and they may decline further.
But a leading authority on residential property and one of Australia’s most popular market analysts says it’s important that we put the latest figures into context.
Executive research director of CoreLogic’s Asia-Pacific Research Division Tim Lawless says while the rate of decline eased off a little through September, housing prices are expected to continue to fall “as we move through the eye of the storm, at least until interest rates find a ceiling”.
“However, the context is very important, especially in a market like the Sunshine Coast where we saw housing values rise by nearly 53 per cent – an absolutely spectacular and clearly unsustainable rise,” he says.
“House prices are down 6.9 per cent on the Sunny Coast since that peak in May, which of course lines up with when interest rates started to rise.
“But they are still 42 per cent higher than what they were before COVID.
“The market is definitely moving through a downturn, but it comes after a monumental upswing.”
And while we are seeing an increase in the number of days it takes for a home to sell on the Coast, Mr Lawless says the current median days on market is still a relatively fast rate of sale when compared with earlier figures.
“Between early 2021 and the end of 2021, we were seeing Sunshine Coast homes selling between 10 and 20 days on the market. Generally, about 13 days was the median, which is very rare to see,” Mr Lawless says.
“Since then, average days on market
have risen to about 36.
“While that’s more than a doubling in the number of days it takes to sell, again it comes from an extreme position. If you look back over the past five years, it was fairly normal for homes to take about 40 days to sell on the Sunshine Coast.
“In fact, in the middle of 2019, we were seeing Sunshine Coast homes take as long as just over 60 days to sell on average.”
And while there is evidence that vendors have become less confidant to test the market, Mr Lawless says the total amount of listings is around 16 per cent higher than 12 months ago.
“At the moment, the flow of new listings compared to the same time last year is down about 15 per cent. So, we are definitely seeing less stock being added to the market,” he says.
“But importantly, there is another way to measure listings and that is to look at the total amount of stock rather than the flow. The total amount of listings is about 16 per cent higher than what it was a year ago.”
With more homes available for sale and a smaller pool of buyers, Mr Lawless says an increase in competition means it has never been more important to have a solid marketing campaign.
“It’s clearly moving from a sellers market to a buyers market,” he says.
“In this sort of environment, it does become much more important to ensure the marketing campaign behind a property is really high quality and focused on making the home stand out from the crowd.
“On top of that, vendors’ expectations need to be aligned with the market and sellers will need to be a little more flexible and ready to negotiate because buyers have the upper hand right now.”
