Laws to crack down on data hacking

Companies that have data breaches like Optus or Medibank could soon face bigger penalties under new laws introduced to parliament.

Companies will soon face tougher fines if their customer data is hacked, under new laws introduced to federal parliament.

The laws brought in by the government in the wake of the Optus and Medibank data breaches, will increase the penalty for data breaches from $2.2 million to at least $50 million.

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus said recent breaches had shown the serious impact data hacking had on Australians.

“Governments, businesses and other organisations have an obligation to protect Australians’ personal data, not to treat it as a commercial asset.

“The law must reflect this,” he told parliament last Wednesday.

“Setting these penalties at a higher level will accord with the Australian community expectations about the importance of protecting their personal data.”

Under the new laws, companies will be fined whichever is greater of $50 million – 30 per cent of the company’s turnover in the relevant period or three times the value of any benefit

gained from the stolen data.

“Penalties for privacy breaches cannot be seen as simply the cost of doing business,” Mr Dreyfus said.

“Entities must be incentivised to have strong cyber and data security safeguards

communications watchdog to make sure the regulators can work better together.

In the wake of the Optus and Medibank breaches affecting millions of customers, Mr Dreyfus said it was important to act as quickly as possible.

“Data breaches have the potential to cause serious financial and emotional harm to Australians, and this is unacceptable,” he said.

“These amendments are targeted and measured.

“They respond to the most pressing issues arising from the Optus data breach and other recent cyber incidents.”

The introduction of the bill was fast tracked following the Optus data breach.

It follows from revelations the Medibank data breach was bigger than first thought.

The health insurer has been contacting current and former customers who might have had their personal information stolen in the hack.

AAP Diesel prices are hitting record highs, with Sunshine Coast motorists paying well over $2.33 a litre. But the reason we are paying more at the bowser for diesel fuel is not what most people assume.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Cooney says the record high prices are due to international factors, rather than overcharging by fuel companies.

“There’s a misconception that fuel companies are overcharging motorists on diesel but, in fact, retail margins are reasonably low,” Ms Cooney explains.

“The current average retail margin on diesel sold in Brisbane is 9.5 cents per litre. Usually this sits at around 12 cents per litre.”

The average price for diesel in the Sunshine Coast is currently 235.8.

This is yet to break the record high of 236.1, which was set on July 1.

Ms Cooney says exceptionally high diesel prices are being experienced right across the world. Plus, the demand for diesel is much higher than the demand for unleaded fuel.

In Queensland, we consume more than twice as much diesel as we do petrol,” she says.

Bees are notorious for their stings, but humans aren’t the only ones who experience this pain in the neck (or the arm, or the leg). In protecting their hives from outsiders, ‘guard bees’ will stay by the entrance and sniff the bees that come in, says Marianne Peso from the biology department of Macquarie University. If there’s a rogue bee from another hive trying to steal some nectar, the guard bee will bite and even sting the intruder.

Humans are the only animals that blush. We are thought to be the only living thing that feels embarrassment—a complicated emotion requiring understanding others’ opinions and other factors. Charles Darwin called blushing “the most peculiar and most human of all expressions,” while Mark Twain said, “man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to.”

Do you remember? Typewriters

The humble typewriter, the basic precursor to the modern computer, was in its day a marvel of technology. A step up from paper and pen, the typewriter opened up a world of possibilities for those looking to craft novels, document history or scribe propaganda. The foundations for the typewriter were laid down as far back as 1575, but it’s rarely used in a modern world of computers, laptops and tablets.

Growing a brotherhood

Blase Grinner is activating a generation of men. The Sunshine Coast father of two sons and one daughter is on a mission to redefine what it means to be a ‘man’ in this day and age. And he is doing it through brotherhood.

“I am here to remind men that they aren’t unique and they aren’t unicorns,” Blase says.

“What I mean by that is we all have our struggles, our issues, our vices, addictions, and we are all trying to go about this life as lone wolves.

“It doesn’t work. We need brotherhood. We need a purpose, and I have spent the last 10 or so years creating that for men – both here and around the world.”

For Blase, this journey started from a young age after someone close to him attempted suicide and, thankfully, survived. It was the catalyst he needed to ask himself what his true purpose was.

“At that time, I was a young

uninitiated man, playing football, working in a leadership role in construction. But I was on a bad path,” Blase says.

“My dad left when I was seven and I was told: ‘You’re the man of the house now’. We were Aussie battlers living in commission housing.

“At 18, I was sentenced to three years’ jail. Every single relationship I ever had failed. I was unfaithful, addicted to everything under the sun – alcohol, gambling, porn, drugs, steroids.

“And then, at 22, someone close to me tried to kill himself and I reached a point where I knew something had to change. My confidence was all but non-existent. I was insecure and on a path to self-destruction.

“I made a choice that enough was enough. There had to be another way to live. And boom. I was off the mark. So, I built up my inner strength, reached out and allowed support in.

“I invested in myself – time, energy,

money – and discovered that movement equals movement.”

Blase discovered “men’s work” and decided his purpose was to share this with other men.

About six years ago, his business was

values, visions and purpose, they can thrive. Being in an environment like the one we create with men’s work shows men that they can be part of a group who support each other, boost each other up and don’t judge or use their vulnerability as a tool or weapon against them. We show the men in our circles how to open up by doing it ourselves.

“We always share in real time our own personal struggles and the challenges we are facing because there is always something else that we need to work on, too.”

Blase believes COVID lockdowns proved that men need brotherhood now more than ever.

born. Today, he is helping men across the globe and has 13 people in his team.

“The most important thing for men to learn is that it’s okay not to have their sh*t together,” Blase says.

“Every man has their issues in some way, and when men discover their

“I am speaking from a man’s perspective here, and from what I saw, COVID lockdowns and isolation really boxed men in,” he says.

a man’ which have such negative weight to them.

“So when men were literally forced inside and caged, they realised so many challenges they didn’t know they had.

“All we need to do is look at the fact that Lifeline had the most calls in history to see how bad things were getting and, honestly, more men than ever simply realised during this time that they didn’t want to feel like that anymore.

“They wanted to change. Basically, more and more men are seeking men’s circles and retreats because they don’t want to end up a statistic.”

So, what does working with Blase look like?

“Throughout all of my offerings, I will not be your friend,” he says.

“I will be your right-hand corner man – the one who guides and mentors you to continue to step into your greatness,

kicks your ass (for accountability) when procrastination steps in, holds space for you, calls you forward on limiting mind chatter, and celebrates every win with you along the way. My superpower is transitioning men into their purpose, so that is what I will do.”

Blase’s offering is Mindfit Gym HQ: a membership platform where men can connect in an online “gym for the mindset and the heart”. Plus, he has a free facebook group and hosts various other retreats throughout the year.

“In Mindfit HQ, guys build rock-solid foundations, boost confidence, relationships and find direction,” Blase says. “We have a foundation and strategies to help men sharpen their mindset, gain clarity, tools and become who they want to be. Fellas, you don’t need to suffer in silence any longer.”

OPENING DOORS TO HOUSING SOLUTIONS

The Sunshine Coast will play host to an important forum discussing one of the most poignant topics impacting the region: housing.

The Sunshine Coast Business Council’s (SCBC) annual Combined Government and Business Forum on November 4 will bring key stakeholders together for a robust discussion on the continuing crisis.

As part of the invite-only, closed event Property Council of Australia (PCA) Queensland deputy executive director Jess Caire will provide insight into housing shortages locally, as well as migration predictions and possible solutions to ease the crisis.

Her key topic of discussion will be the A Home for Every Queenslander campaign – a PCA position paper that sets out a range of tangible actions the Queensland Government can take to address the issue.

This paper initiated the State Government’s recent decision to convene for a Housing Summit on October 20.

“A Home for Every Queenslander was the beginning of the conversation,” Ms Caire tells My Weekly Preview.

“(It was) an open invitation for government, industry and the community to work together so we can ensure appropriate and affordable housing options are available.

“The Property Council will endeavour to draw out this conversation over the next decade, so Queensland can realise the benefits of growth leading up to the 2032 Olympics.

“The recent Housing Summit … has already led to a series of positive announcements, including an expanded Housing Investment Fund and reduction in red tape to respond to accommodation

issues during disasters.

“A Home for Every Queenslander also contains a range of technical solutions that can be undertaken by the state government to unlock additional land supply and take the pressure off the entire housing spectrum.”

Ms Caire says a critical part of the solution is also ensuring the community is well educated around the benefits of growth.

“While industry stands ready to create the homes Southeast Queensland needs, it can’t do it alone,” she says.

“The recent housing roundtable and subsequent summit reinforced the need for a collaborative effort to ensure every Queenslander has a safe, affordable, fit-for purpose home.”

It is a timely discussion after the PCA revealed in September the number of

• One-in-20 or 220,000 Melbournians and Sydneysiders are looking to relocate to Queensland in the next five years.

• Based on this data, Southeast Queensland will need to find a way to house the equivalent of the combined populations of Townsville and Gladstone.

• Most southerners will move to Brisbane (42 per cent), Gold Coast (39 per cent) or Sunshine Coast (37 per cent).

• Interstate migrants are seeking a variety of housing with equal demand for large lots (58 per cent) and small lots (54 per cent) and strong demand for townhouses (37 per cent).

• Key reasons for moving to Southeast Queensland include lifestyle, climate and affordability.

people from southern states who wanted to migrate to the Sunshine Coast.

The data, which was based on a survey of residents from Sydney and Melbourne, puts pressure on the region to ensure it is ready for continued growth.

“The Property Council’s data revealed that of the 220,000 (people) looking to move to Queensland in the next five years, 37 per cent are looking to move to the Sunshine Coast,” Ms Caire says.

“The Sunshine Coast’s rapid population growth and the pressure this is creating is no secret.

“But this growth also presents a unique opportunity for the region. To capitalise on this opportunity, it is critical that the planning framework allows for this population growth to ensure the region is enabled to grow sustainably.”

SCBC chair Sandy Zubrinich says this year’s forum focus is on housing availability, affordability, liveability, the SCBC pipeline of major investment projects, as well as the latest investor market survey.

“This year’s theme is ‘Connecting the Dots’, which reflects on how key strategies and issues may be approached by our political and business leaders and how they can work together for the best interests of the region,” Ms Zubrinich says.

“The SCBC will present the key discussion points from the CGBF … at the annual strategy directions workshop to be held late January.

“That will form the Business Council’s advocacy agenda for 2023.”

The forum will include presentations from MP Ted O’Brien, Noosa Council Mayor Clare Stewart, Ms Caire, Project Urban’s Andrew Stevens, SCBC’s Matt Byrne and Ms Zubrinich, Urbis’s Paul Riga and Regional Development Australia Sunshine Coast’s Carol Cashman.

MIGRATION DATA PREDICTIONS FOR THE SUNSHINE COAST

September data from the Property Council of Australia revealed the ‘huge wave’ of people from southern states who want to call the Sunshine Coast home.

The survey of 220,000 Sydney and Melbourne residents showed 37 per cent, or about 81,400 people, were considering moving to the Coast in the next five years.

It also found one-in-20 people were considering a move to Queensland.

From that, almost 64 per cent had actively discussed moving, 50 per cent had investigated housing options and 40 per cent had looked into the cost of living elsewhere.

Property Council Queensland Executive Director Jen Williams says while lifestyle and climate are the highest motivators for a move — both 76 per cent — the relative affordability of housing is also a major driver.

With the state set to see continued strong population growth and demand for housing, the survey also asked residents of Southeast Queensland for their views on housing affordability and availability.

It also asked for Queenslanders’ sentiment regarding population growth and interstate migration.

“Seventy-five per cent of respondents are concerned about housing affordability and 63 per cent are extremely or moderately concerned about housing availability,” Ms Williams says.

“Only one-third (37 per cent) are concerned about the level of interstate migration.

“These numbers show that Queenslanders are not opposed to growth, but they are worried that housing affordability and availability is getting worse.

“Queensland is at a precipice when it comes to housing. Bold decisions must be made right now.”

Previous reports have been made on the expected population growth in the region by 2041.

It is estimated 200,000 people will move here by 2041.

Sunshine Coast Council’s forward planning expects the bulk of new arrivals to settle between Maroochydore and Caloundra.

EYE IN THE SKY

With turtle nesting season fast approaching, TurtleCare Sunshine Coast is thinking outside the box to protect endangered loggerhead turtle nests on North Bribie Island. An initial two-week trial will see if a drone can be used to monitor the beach for turtle tracks, with the view to extending the experiment for the season if it is successful. Sunshine Coast Council’s TurtleCare Coordinator Kate Hofmeister says the eye in the sky is a safe way volunteers could continue to monitor the 1.1-kilometre stretch of beach at North Bribie Island, which was cut off due to the breakthrough earlier this year.

Construction has officially begun on a highly anticipated beachside development in Buddina. Lowanna Beach Resort will deliver 112 apartments and five commercial spaces across three impressive towers. The project has been brought to fruition by the team at WOW Group, led by local female developer Lorna Willis. Located in what many consider the ‘golden triangle’ of the Sunshine Coast (Buddina, Point Cartwright, Mooloolaba), Lowanna Beach Resort has been so popular, less than 10 per cent of apartments remain available to purchase. Construction is expected to be completed by June 2024.

A controversial $1.6 billion funding commitment for a “vital” rail project has been retained in the first budget handed down by the Albanese Government. The funding is for the Direct Sunshine Coast Line, a $3.2 billion project that will build heavy passenger rail connecting the existing line at Beerwah to new stations in Caloundra, Kawana, and Maroochydore. The funding arrangement for the state-controlled project is based on a 50/50 split between the Federal and State Governments. DEVOTION TO THE REGION

ell done. Keep up the good work.” Who doesn’t love hearing those words? There are thousands of people in the community volunteering their time and, most often, the feeling they get from doing good things is reward enough.

Sometimes, though, a little recognition goes a long way.

The Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards recognise the individuals and groups working hard to make our community better.

This is your chance to say ‘thank you’ in a way that won’t be forgotten. But hurry, as nominations close on November 18.

Each year, nominees report feeling humbled, valued and delighted to be noticed; charities and organisations report increases in volunteers or exposure for their cause.

There are seven categories in which to nominate – including citizen of the year, young citizen, senior citizen, community group or organisation, sport and recreation, sustainability, and creative.

If you’re wondering how much a person has to have done – or if they have done enough – to be nominated, longstanding award judge Caroline Campbell, from Channel 7, has the answer.

She says many of the people nominated for an award aren’t in the media every second week.

“They’re not people you hear about a lot, but they’re out there, volunteering their time for the good of the community,” Ms Campbell says.

“It’s wonderful to have a forum to acknowledge these contributions.”

If you know anyone who’s making a

positive difference in the community, nominate them for an award at www. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ausdayawards.

The process is easy

1. Choose your person.

2. Select a category.

3. Write 300-500 words on why you think that person should receive an award.

4. Provide two referees who can verify your nomination.

5. Hit submit.

Mix FM judge John Williams says it must be such a great buzz to be nominated for an award.

“The feeling that someone thought so highly of you – that alone is a great opportunity to put their name forward,”

Mr Williams says.

Judges John and Caroline note that this year, members of the public are being encouraged to think about categories such as sport and recreation.

“If you think about 2032 and the Olympics, we’ve got all these sports across the Coast where so many people are supporting athletes to participate,” Mr

Williams says. “Nominating them is a great way to highlight them and make them feel good about they’re doing in the community.”

Ms Campbell adds: “Look at it from a club level. Look how many volunteers there are that contribute their time each and every week, whether it’s the grounds keepers or someone putting the lines down, the person that runs the canteen each week. It’s the community. It’s the village that makes it happen.”

The sport and recreation award category recognises those who have made a significant contribution to the region, whether that be by coaching, developing programs, encouraging participation or by volunteering.

IT’S OFFICIAL: AUSSIES JUST LOVE NOOSA

A well-respected annual list of the top 50 regional tourist towns has reinforced what locals already know.

Alocal slice of heaven and world-renowned beach has been named among Australia’s top three holiday towns.

Noosa has come in at number three on Australian Traveller Magazine’s list of the top 50 regional holiday towns.

The ranking recognises the popularity of Noosa as a hub for Australian travellers.

It comes after it was awarded silver in the 2021 Top Tourism Towns of Australia.

Tourism Noosa acting CEO Susan Ewington says the result reflects Australians’ love of holidaying in the region that boasts world-class beaches and hinterland.

“This is a wonderful achievement for Noosa, and we’re honoured to be recognised as one of the top three regional towns in Australia,” she says.

“It really is a testament to the number of Australians that love spending their holidays in Noosa.

“It is also a reflection of the growth and diversity of the region that we have so

many new and repeat visitors that still put Noosa at the top of their holiday lists.”

Ms Ewington hopes this will encourage visitors to discover the region, which is a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Surfing Reserve, and also have a chance to experience the diverse national parks, beaches, hinterland villages, and popular retail and dining scene.

Western Australia’s Broome came in at number one on the list, with Queensland holiday destination Port Douglas in second place.

Australian Traveller managing director Quentin Long says the goal of the top regional town list is to inspire Australians to travel within the country.

“With the Best Towns issue, our objective is to give readers a list of towns they can put on their lists of places to visit,” he says.

“For us, it’s all about inspiring Australians and making it easier for them to get out and see their own country.”

means so much to our veterans and their families.

RSL Queensland state president Major General Stephen Day (DSC AM) says Remembrance Day presents a profound opportunity to honour those who gave their lives in service to their country, those who returned home injured or ill, and those who bravely serve Australia today.

“Remembrance Day is a date that has long been cemented into the lives of Australians,” he says.

“While leading busy, fast-paced lives can often result in this important moment passing by, it is imperative that we pause, reflect and honour those who have fallen, and recognise the invaluable contribution our service people make to our country.

MUSCLING IN ON SUMMER HEALTH

Gold’s Gym Australia has launched another season of the Good as Gold’s podcast, to promote a happy and healthy mind and body ahead of summer.

NextFriday, Australia will pause to remember all the brave service personnel who have made the ultimate sacrifice during wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.

November 11 marks Remembrance Day: a day that commemorates the signing of the Armistice agreement between German and Allied Forces in 1918 that signalled an end to World War I.

RSL Queensland is calling on all Queenslanders to “remember to remember” with a minute’s silence at 11am on the day.

Commemorations will be held across the state, including here on the Sunshine Coast, with thousands expected to attend their nearest service in a collective display of camaraderie.

“It’s just one minute, but it means so much more to the veteran community and their families.”

Local services will be held at Beerwah, Caloundra and Kawana Waters, or Queensland’s official state commemoration at Brisbane’s Anzac Square will be live streamed on the RSL Queensland Facebook page.

“While many of our guests speak about their fitness journey, we also focus on nutrition, wellness, mindset, resilience and emotional stories of triumph,” he says. “We want people to feel inspired, educated and motivated after they listen to each episode of Good as Gold’s and know they can achieve anything they set their mind to.”

AERO CLUB HELPS CHARITY GIVE MORE PATIENTS ‘WINGS’

A charity established to provide nonemergency air transport for patients living in remote and regional areas will have a Coast ‘base’ for its services.

Community Flights will stage its Sunshine Coast Airport operations from the Sunshine Coast Aero Club.

NEW RULES FOR PERSONAL MOBILITY DEVICES

Personal mobility devices (PMDs) or rideables became subject to rule changes as of November 1.

These are known as e-scooters, e-bicycles, e-skateboards or self-balancing one- or two-wheel devices.

Officer-in-charge of Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho, says these rule changes are designed to encourage the safe use of PMDs in our community and to discourage bad behaviour.

What’s changing:

• Reducing the speed limit to 12km/h on footpaths and shared paths, unless otherwise signed. The 25km/h limit applies everywhere else, including bike lanes and local streets.

• Increased fines of up to $1078 for dangerous offences involving speed, use on prohibited roads, and holding a mobile phone while riding.

• Allowing personal mobility devices to be ridden in bike lanes on roads with a speed limit of 50km/h or less, and all on-road bike lanes that are physically separated.

• Personal mobility device riders, such as bike riders, must follow road rules including stopping at red lights.

• Bells must be used on personal mobility devices with handlebars.

There is a broad range of these PMDs

being used in public spaces on the Sunshine Coast, so you must abide by the new rules to use them. At this stage, a PMD or rideable does not have to be registered.

Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol is executing a specific PMD operation, which aims to enforce legislation and educate all PMD owners and riders on the new rules.

There will be random road watches at school zones, roads, road-related areas and footpaths. When using a footpath, it is expected that PMDs are to be respectful, give way, keep left and ride in a safe manner around pedestrians. You must not carry passengers on a PMD.

This column is compiled by the Sunshine Coast District Crime Prevention Unit. If you have information for police, contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or crimestoppersqld.com.au, or Policelink at police.qld.gov.au/reporting.

With the help of the lunar eclipse, use your fertile imagination and trusty intuition to get to the bottom of a problem that’s been bothering you. If you listen to the wisdom of your inner voice (and pay attention to the symbolism in your dreams) it will point you in the right direction.

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

Stylishly elegant Librans appreciate quality and luxury, but don’t overdo it or you’ll end up being the most beautiful bankrupt on the block! This week Saturn, Uranus and the lunar eclipse all stir up your money and self-esteem zones. So it’s time to get your finances in order.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

This week’s stars could stir up your reckless side, as you unleash your inner rebel. Try to do so in appropriate ways that don’t upset loved ones, antagonise authority figures or endanger your personal safety! A professional or personal challenge could also test your mettle.

7. True or false: chameleons (pictured) can see light in the ultraviolet spectrum?

8. Who was the first woman to lead an Australian political party?

9. Who was the host of the satirical ABC program Mad as Hell?

10. Capri is an island belonging to which European country?

CANCER (JUN 22-JUL 23)

The silvery, changeable moon is your power planet, and many sensitive crabs feel emotionally volatile and vulnerable around the time of the full moon. Tuesday’s lunar eclipse is in earthy Taurus, when you’ll feel more grounded (and less moody) than usual.

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

If you stir up grievances with an old adversary, you could find you’ve bitten off more than you can chew! When it comes to a frustrating problem, avoid quick fixes. You’ll find a solution if you act on your hunches and look for the facts that are hidden beneath the surface.

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

Hidden tensions could bubble to the surface with a relative, neighbour or colleague. Be extra diplomatic and try not to take criticism personally. Social media is also a potential minefield, as the planets stir up your communication zone.

PLAYING THE GAME WITH SPONSORS

Thekerfuffle over Australia’s richest

sponsorship from Netball Australia caused ripples in grassroots sporting organisations.

Hancock Prospecting had pledged $15 million to the national netball body, which is in dire financial straits despite generous government grants.

But the mining giant took back its golden gift when it was revealed the Diamonds’ only Indigenous player objected to wearing the Hancock logo because of a racist comment made by the company’s founder in the 1980s – and the rest of the team fell in behind her. The company decided not to stir up that old hornet’s nest and exited. It was the same week Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins said he would not be appearing in ads for the team’s sponsor, Alinta Energy, because of his environmental beliefs.

This athlete advocacy at the top level reflects activism in broader society. We are now conscious consumers, opinionistas and love clicking for a cause. But let’s not get too purist: using corporate dollars to prop up sporting activities is not new, even at a community level. As a primary schooler

eons ago, I was selected to swim in a carnival that was sponsored by KB (a popular beer then) and my Little Athletics T-shirt featured a McDonald’s patch. My brother and I enrolled in a Kraft tennis camp and wore our Milo tracksuits.

Years later, when my kids were playing junior soccer and netball on the Sunshine Coast, our after-game routines regularly had to incorporate ‘spending’ the voucher they had scored from Maccas, KFC or Subway for being the player of the week.

And even then, the irony of loading a kid up on a meal at the ‘junk’ end of the spectrum, after playing sport, was not lost on me. Sport and sponsors are hand in glove. And as unpalatable as it feels sometimes, money really does make sport go ’round.

While it is right that some sponsors and causes would make strange bedfellows (Education Queensland rightly mandates that schools can’t accept sponsorships from gaming or alcohol companies, for example), the adages about looking a gift horse in the mouth and biting the feeding hand find form here. Getting too choosy can lead to annihilation. Battles must be prudently picked.

IT’S RAINING BALI BELLY LAUGHS

Ashley Robinson admits he is fluent in ‘idiot’ as he packs plenty of comedic material into his haphazard adventures on trips abroad.

Ifthe author of An Idiot Abroad wants to reinvent the series, I have an episode ready to go. Recently, I went to Bali for a week after not being there since February 2020 because of COVID.

Previous to that, I had about 20 trips to the island – certainly enough times to learn the language, but I never have. I decided to head north to Tanah Lot for a few days. Rice paddies and beaches – perfect. My little brother Mahoyda dropped me off, with his last words being: “It won’t rain today”.

It was a really nice spot and the young guy who helped me get sorted mentioned something about the key in the door. I just smiled and nodded, thinking: “I won’t need to lock up out here”. I went for a 90-minute walk in the blistering heat and came back to find that they had locked me out (the key conversation) and there was a 10-foot fence and massive door that I couldn’t get over.

Everyone had left, except for a guy laying tiles, who just said: “No English” when I tried to talk him into getting over the fence. He pointed to a door, which I knocked on, and a cool-looking surfie dude came out, so I managed to explain my predicament. He got over the fence without

falling in the pool but proved to me that I would have had no chance and would have been sleeping in the driveway. He reluctantly took $10 from me and left laughing. I then decided to go out on my scooter to get something to eat, just on dusk. I took the door key.

I rode for about three kilometres and it started pouring. So I pulled in under shelter on the side of the road, with the electrical storm and monsoonal rain. I was under there for about 70 minutes, joined by about six other locals on scooters. Lots of giggling.

Eventually, I decided to head back ... whichever way that was, as everything looked completely different in the pitch black (bar the lightning). “I don’t remember seeing that building. What if I can’t find my way back? I have no phone, no undies. I am saturated. Where am I going to sleep” – all thoughts flying through my noggin.

Thankfully, by pure luck, I found my digs after a few prayers and a couple of curses re: Mahoyda’s weather knowledge.

Footnote: I found out the next day that the surfer dude who didn’t want to take my money owned the villa. Idiot Abroad Season ’22 has plenty of material.

BEING IN THE PINK IS NO BUMMER

Dutch courage from a few wines (and a cheeky Irish mother-in-law) ensured Sami Muirhead didn’t flip out in a celebrity encounter.

Ineedto stop watching reality TV about house-flipping. I would like an intervention because chicken Twisties and house renovation shows are no longer a guilty secret, but bordering on a full-blown obsession that, ironically, stop me from cleaning my own home.

My couch addiction and its side effects are quite obvious when I try to squeeze into my jeans. And nothing good comes from watching house-renovation shows. The hosts are always genetically blessed and stop midway through a messy concrete pour to make some macrame pot plant holders to send to orphans overseas.

The actual houses are simply too beautiful compared with my home which smells like a zoo that has been boarded up in the rain for two months. All my husband hears about is how we do not have a Mexican-inspired arch entrance with cactus plant in our foyer or actual gold embedded in the ensuite walls. This is a real thing.

I present to you Hamish Blake and Zoe Foster Blake’s gazillion-dollar new mansion, unveiled in Sydney. The whole damn thing is pink. Even the kitchen. And the toilet. And yet somehow it looks incredibly cool.

The radio funnyman and the make-up empire business wizard are a pink

powerhouse of money, taste and ambition.

If I painted our house salmon, it would look like The Pink Poodle in the glory days of Meter Maids and the Gold Coast.

But not Hamish and Zoe. Nope. In their spare time from making LEGO shows, they have whipped up a rambling rose ranch that is so boujee, it hurts my heart. Before COVID, I once met Hamish and he was a total delight. I was with my mother-in-law Betty who is beautiful trouble.

Betty is Irish Catholic, loves a tipple and tells a fabulous tale. When we spotted Hamish in the booth next to us at The German Club, we were both a little star-struck. So, we ordered two more bottles of wine. We were grounded for the rest of the night as we could not possibly walk past him on the way to the toilets: we didn’t want Hamish seeing our curvy butts.

Betty took great pleasure in telling Hamish this story when we plucked up the courage to purge to him later in the night.

Hamish was the perfect gentleman and with a twinkle in his eye, humbly commented he thought we were both stunning women. Well played, Hamish. You made a lady in her 70s and a middle-aged mum very happy ... some would even say as rosy as your ensuite.

SPILLING THE BEANS ON BEANS

Legumes: they come in all shapes, sizes and colours. They’re cheap, delicious, protein-packed and last forever.

Here are seven reasons why you need to add beans, chickpeas and lentils to your weekly shopping list.

1. They’re nutritious and great for your heart – Legumes are one of the quiet achievers when it comes to healthy eating. They contain antioxidants and vital minerals and nutrients such as folate, iron and magnesium. Legumes are also high in protein and fibre and have a low glycaemic index (GI), which means they keep you feeling fuller for longer. And when it comes to your heart, these little powerhouses can also reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, and the risk of coronary heart disease – the

leading cause of heart attack.

2. They’re affordable with a long shelf-life – Beans are a budget-friendly pantry staple with a particularly long shelf life. Check out the use-by date next time you’re at the shops. And if you have the storage space, a top money-saving tip is to consider buying canned or dried beans in bulk.

3. They’re super versatile and easy to cook with – When it comes to including more legumes in your cooking, think outside the box. You can include beans, chickpeas or lentils in almost any recipe (even desserts!), with herbs and spices for flavour.

of cooked beans, peas or lentils. And when you include them in dishes including a falafel bowl or curry bean burgers, you can tick off multiple servings of vegies at once to make it a little easier to get your five a day.

5. They’re great for your gut – While legumes can have a bit of a gassy reputation, this is the fibre doing its magical job to keep your gut healthy. To minimise any side effects, the best advice is to increase your legume consumption gradually over several weeks, to give your body time to adjust.

coeliac or gluten-free. If you have one of these preferences, legumes have got you covered. For people who want to reduce their meat consumption, beans, lentils and chickpeas are great alternatives. And did you know the main ingredient of tofu is soybean, another type of legume? For more inspiration, get your free copy of the Heart Foundation’s meat-free recipes book. For people who opt for low dairy or lactose-free diets, plant-based milks are a popular option. Soy milk, for example, is made from legumes. When opting for plant-based milks, remember to go for a no-added-sugar version. For people with coeliac disease or those who follow a gluten-free diet, legumes are again here to save the day. They’re often used to make gluten-free versions of staple foods, including flour and pasta.

7. They’re planet-friendly and sustainable – Did you know that beans and legumes are sustainable foods, meaning they can be grown and harvested for many generations? They’re not only good for you, they’re also good for the planet. Beans and lentils often come from sustainable crops. They are hardy plants and can survive on light rains and moisture stored in the soil. Legumes are also good at introducing nitrogen into soil, which is important for plant growth. For this reason, legumes are useful crops for farming, as other non-legume crops can benefit, too. The other great thing is that legume cans can be recycled. As for dried legumes, check the labelling on the pack to see if the packaging can be recycled.

cup

4. They can help you strive for five –Did you know that you can count legumes in your five serves of vegies a day? One serve is equivalent to

6. They offer options for people with dietary preferences – According to the Heart Foundation’s What Australia Eats report, around a third of Australians have a dietary preference, including vegetarian, low dairy or lactose-free and

HELP IS AVAILABLE TO REDUCE THE ‘MUMMY TUMMY’

Having a baby is an immensely rewarding time, but changes to women’s bodies can leave mums feeling low.

Sometimes abdominal muscles are left weakened and separated. This is called Diastasis Recti, which may result in a bulging belly. Up to one-in-three women report ongoing issues with this after birth.

In addition to the “pooch” tummy that doesn’t go away, women may also experience internal symptoms, including difficulty with bladder control, lower back pain, pelvic heaviness or pain, and pain during sex.

Until recently there has been little apart from challenging physical therapy and surgery to correct abdominal separation. Now, with the introduction of the truSculpt Flex Muscle Stimulator, a simple and effective treatment is

available for mums on the Sunshine Coast. The Flex builds and strengthens muscles without pain or downtime.

Bree is a 24-year-old healthy mum who has lived with Diastasis Recti since the birth of her second child.

“I had absolutely no muscle at all in my stomach, which led to my stomach always bulging out like I was still heavily pregnant,” she says.

She has had two truSculpt Flex treatments at Sun Sculpt, with two more to go.

She is thrilled with the results so far.

“Since these sessions with Emma, my stomach muscles feel stronger and my tummy is starting to look normal again.”

To explore treatment options, contact Emma at Sun Sculpt on 0448 441 509 for a complimentary consultation or book at www.sunsculpt.com.au.

TIME TO TAKE UP A HEALTHY ROUTINE WHILE GETTING FIT AND STRONG

The good weather is finally here and everyone is really looking forward to spending time outside in the sunshine.

After a winter spent mostly indoors, now is the ideal time to get your body up and moving again.

Surf Getaways, a learn-to-surf and surf travel company for women by women, has developed a fitness program that will help you get fit, strong and achieve your fitness goals in a safe and encouraging environment, ditching the boring gyms and machine training.

Instead, your workout space will be the beach, your training tools are surfboards and natural weights, and your coaches are strong and experienced ocean lovers.

Designed by surfers and personal trainers, the Surf Fit program runs for six weeks with two sessions a week to ensure maximum results.

If you’re a surfer, this program is the

perfect accompaniment to help you boost your surfing and gain confidence in the water.

If you’re not a surfer, it’s a fun and different way to head outside and get fit.

Throughout the duration of the program, you’ll work on four key areas. These areas aim at increasing surf fitness, improving paddle technique and building strength and confidence.

Breath work – Breath-work techniques to help you control your reactions when you’re underwater.

Paddling – Surf paddle training to ensure correct technique and improve efficiency and endurance.

Swimming – Ocean-swimming techniques to ensure confidence when you’re without a board.

Strength – Land-based strength movements to maximise surfing potential and minimise injury.

So, get back into a workout routine, resume healthy habits and join a group of like-minded and supportive women in sessions at Currimundi and Alexandra Headland. Visit www.surfgetaways.com. au/surf-fit.

WAYS TO PROTECT EYES AND PRECIOUS VISION

After three decades as an ophthalmic nurse, I have learnt just how precious our eyes and vision are.

As with our general health, we need to be the drivers of our own healthcare journeys. Having regular eye checks at your optometrist not only provides you with better vision with glasses, but many systemic and chronic conditions are often discovered at these visits –including high blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as markers for

diseases such as bowel cancer.

Gardening is something many of us enjoy. We need to be mindful of the risks involved so as we can continue this pastime and avoid injuries that can affect us for the rest of our lives.

Mowing and whipper snipping: flying rocks, grass seeds, sticks and other debris seem to find an eye way too often.

Trees and other vegetation: a branch can not only give you a nasty injury, but many living organisms, as well as fungi, can cause infections that are extremely difficult to treat.

Around the house: have you ever heard of a car battery exploding? This is more common than you realise. The issue with this is you not only receive an acid burn, but also heat and blunt force trauma from the explosion.

Sunshine: don’t forget to wear a hat, sunscreen and sunglasses while you are gardening. Skin cancers on the eyelids are preventable, as are pterygia. It’s never too soon to pop sunnies and a hat on your children.

So what can we do to prevent this eye damage and possible loss of vison?

Wear eye protection. Love your eyes and get them checked.

INTRICATE STRUCTURE OF THE OUTER EAR

It is handy to stop our glasses falling off and, of course, it can display nice jewellery. But we all know that’s not what it’s for.

The external ear can be divided functionally and structurally into two parts: the auricle (or pinna), and the external acoustic meatus – the ear canal which ends at the tympanic membrane (ear drum).

The auricle is a paired structure found on either side of the head. It functions to capture and direct sound

waves towards the ear canal. It is a mostly cartilaginous structure, with the ear lobe being the only part not supported by cartilage.

Fun fact: did you know it is estimated that the prevalence of attached earlobes is a little less than 30 per cent.

The ear canal is an ‘S’ shaped tube that extends from the deep part of the bowl of the outer ear to the ear drum.

The walls of the external one-third are formed by cartilage; the inner two-thirds are formed by the temporal bone. At the end of the ear canal lies the Tympanic membrane (ear drum). It is a connective tissue structure, covered with skin on the outside and a mucous membrane on the inside.

The components of the outer ear help to collect and focus sound energy as it moves into the middle ear. It is important to have a healthy outer ear to ensure the best-possible pathway for sound. Common outer-ear problems include ear-wax blockages, foreign objects and external ear infections.

Examination of the ear canal is an essential part of a hearing test.

NEW FREE, FUN APP EXPLORES BRAIN HEALTH

Dementia Australia has launched a free mobile app, BrainTrack, that helps people to privately monitor and better understand suspected changes in their cognition over time.

If they have concerns, they can then share the results with their GP and use it as a conversation starter to support an earlier dementia diagnosis.

Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe says BrainTrack helps individuals explore common cognitive concerns and provides brain-health information through fun, travel-themed games that have been adapted from validated cognitive testing.

“Users are prompted to log in monthly to play the games and within the app can easily generate a pdf report of the results that can be emailed to their GP,” Ms McCabe says.

“While not intended to replace a formal cognitive assessment, BrainTrack supports the early identification of cognitive changes over time that may warrant further testing.”

Encouraging people to talk to their GP as soon as they have concerns may lead to an earlier diagnosis of dementia which then empowers and enables

people living with dementia, their families and carers to better understand and manage the diagnosis on their terms.

“I encourage everyone interested in exploring more about their brain health to download BrainTrack and for GPs and other treating healthcare professionals to encourage their patients who have concerns about their cognition to do so, too,” Ms McCabe says.

“With up to half-a-million Australians living with dementia – which is projected to increase to 1.1 million people by 2058 – improving early diagnosis must be a priority.”

Isabelle Burke cared for her mother Christine, whose diagnosis experience stretched out over many years. This impacted Christine’s quality of life, as well as that of her brother and sister.

“Mum was misdiagnosed for many years and later prescribed antipsychotics which added to the issues,” Ms Burke says.

“If we had known it was dementia, we would have been able to get the right support earlier for our Mum and spend her final years cherishing our time with her, creating memories together.

“Instead, by the time she was diagnosed, she required full-time care and sadly died, aged just 59, in 2019.”

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED A SEASONAL DETOX?

Toxicity is a much greater concern in the 21st century than ever before.

We ingest new chemicals, eat more sugar and refined foods, plus use various stimulants and sedatives daily.

Many of us may experience a wide range of symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, pains, coughs, gastrointestinal problems and issues with immune weakness, which can all be related to toxicity. Toxicity occurs when we take in more than we can use or eliminate.

It can be beneficial to undergo a cleanse every once in a while, to allow your body functions to rest. With a regular, balanced diet, devoid of excesses, we will need less-intensive detoxification as our body has a daily elimination cycle (mostly conducted at night and in the early morning, up until breakfast).

Detoxification involves dietary and lifestyle changes that reduce the intake of toxins and improve elimination pathways.

Avoidance of chemicals from food or other sources, refined food, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco and many drugs helps minimise the toxin load. Drinking extra water (purified) and increasing fibre by including more fruits and vegetables in the diet may help to aid the detoxification process. Moving to a less-congesting diet will help us to move along the detox road.

The Non-Toxic Diet – Eat organic foods whenever possible. Remove or minimise red meats, cured meats, organ meats, refined foods, canned foods, sugar, salt, saturated fats, coffee, alcohol and nicotine.

Drink filtered water and herbal teas to cleanse our skin and kidneys, and improve our sweating with exercise.

Rotate foods, especially common allergens, such as milk, eggs, wheat and

yeast foods. Practise food combining and include seasonal fruits, vegetables plus whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Re-evaluate your kitchenware: minimise plastic and cook in iron, stainless steel, glass or porcelain.

To improve elimination through the skin, regular exercise is important to stimulate sweating. Exercise improves general metabolism and aids overall detoxification. Regular bathing is essential to cleanse the skin of released toxins and to open pores to eliminate more. Saunas can assist to help purify with enhanced skin elimination. Dry brushing the skin with an appropriate brush before bathing is helpful to cleanse the skin of old cells and invigorate it.

Massage therapy, especially lymphatic and even deeper massage helps stimulate elimination and body functions, promoting relaxation. During detox, we may need more rest to help our body rebalance, as our mind and attitudes can interfere with our natural homeostasis. Practising yoga combines quiet yet powerful exercises with breathing awareness and regulation, allowing increased flexibility and relaxation. – Article written by: Kunara Organic Marketplace qualified naturopath.

DON’T LOSE SIGHT OF…

World Sight Day was on October 13.

This is a day aimed at raising global attention to reversible blindness, vision impairment and eye care. With this day in mind, here a few things that are relevant to us here in Australia.

Glaucoma – Vision loss, in the majority of cases, occurs gradually and is often only recognised when the disease is quite advanced. That’s right: you could have glaucoma and not even know it. Modern research has clearly established a strong link to genetics. Therefore, if you have a parent or a sibling with glaucoma, then you should get your eyes checked with your optometrist on a yearly basis from age 50.

Age-related macula degeneration (AMD)

– AMD is a chronic but painless disease that affects the deeper layers of the retina and choroid. It can cause significant and irreversible loss to your central vision. Once again, genetics plays a big part, as do oxidative triggers – in particular, smoking. Know your risk factors and preserve the health of your macula.

Pterygium – Pterygiums are a triangular growth of fleshy thickened tissue on the white of the eye, gradually extending across the cornea. Sun exposure is a big trigger. If left untreated, scarring occurs and vision can be affected. Occasionally, it

may also be the beginning of a surface eye cancer (OSSN), although this is rare.

Squint – A squint is clinically termed strabismus: an eye misalignment. Our brain is an amazing matrix that keeps our eyes straight. When this safeguard fails, a strabismus develops. This is one of the most common eye conditions seen in children and can develop as young as three months of age, with profound visual implications. The first seven years of a child’s life are crucial to address this, which is the basis for children’s visionscreening programs in schools.

As our dental care and nutrition have improved, less room is available for wisdom teeth.

The average adult has 32 teeth by age 18: 16 teeth on the top and a similar number on the bottom.

Each tooth has a specific name and function. However, there is rarely room to accommodate wisdom teeth (third molars). When wisdom teeth attempt to erupt through the gum tissue, it can result in immense pain and discomfort.

At Suncoast Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centre, we will always assess the condition of your mouth before making any recommendations for treatment.

In your consultation with Dr Wilson, he will listen to your concerns, examine the position of your wisdom teeth in depth by taking appropriate x-rays and inspecting your mouth and then inform you of his findings and recommendations.

All surgery is performed under appropriate anaesthesia to maximise patient comfort.

This may include local anaesthesia (injections to numb the area requiring surgery, which is undertaken in the rooms; or sedation/general anaesthesia (where you are semi-conscious or unconscious), which is undertaken in a hospital environment.

Mind over matter

The body goes where the mind goes –this could not be truer.

We all know we should be eating lean meats and vegies and doing regular exercise to look and feel our best. So why do people struggle to get in shape when there is so much information online?

The answer lies with our mindset. The best results will come when you are in a great frame of mind. The more motivated and consistent you are with your routine, the happier you will be and less likely to emotionally eat or drink excessively, which of course sabotages your goals.

Chemical peels – safe skin rejuvenation

Chemical Peels are one of the most versatile cosmetic procedures to induce skin rejuvenation.

A chemical peel is not intended as a nurturing treatment. It is a corrective treatment which can address several skin conditions from acne, pigmentation and melasma to fine lines.

There are many different types of acids used during chemical peels. The most frequently used is Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA), Beta Hydrolic Acids (BHA) and Vitamin A (Retinol).

Go back to basics and address any personal concerns you have with friends, family or even a professional.

Practise gratitude daily, meditate more and start doing the things that put a smile on your face.

Slowly build on this and you will gain momentum due to consistency, which in turn will improve your discipline.

The results will follow. Consistency, discipline, dedication and patience will have you heading in the right direction.

The chemicals change the pH level in the skin which loosens the bonds between skin cells. That encourages the skin to exfoliate and regenerate new cells for a refreshed, clearer complexion.

Chemical peels are safe when done by an experienced dermal therapist for appropriate skin types and correct conditions, and the skin is not over-treated.

The skin must be prepared before a peel to ensure it can tolerate the intensive treatment. After-care is also critical to restore the skin balance, which helps it repair and rejuvenate quickly.

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR SALE

A leading real estate expert shares his top tips to make your home sing. Words: Ingrid Nelson.

never get a second chance to make a good first impression –Will Rogers.

is certainly the case when it comes to selling your property.

your home at its absolute best, particularly in today’s competitive market, can add tens of thousands to the value of your property.

Principal of Ray White Maroochydore Dan Sowden says fresh paint and carpets can make a huge difference.

“These are two areas where you can dramatically change the appearance of the home without breaking the budget,” he says.

“Their combined visual impact is significant as these areas take up the greatest area of a home.

“This, in combination with some styling, can raise the level so far that the more expensive and troublesome renovation of kitchens and bathrooms become less significant to the purchaser.

“Lastly, in the market right now, time is important. If you are planning to renovate then sell, consider the time it will take to complete the works and then consider where the property market might

be in the future.”

Here are some more top tips from Ray White Maroochydore to ensure your property has the best chance of selling and fetching the best price.

Don’t trust your own judgment – Ask your agent to provide you with some advice about what needs to be done. This will ensure you don’t spend too much on the changes and you focus on the areas

that will bring in the most value.

Less is always more – Nearly every home benefits from decluttering. You want to create a feeling of space and illustrate a lifestyle that is appealing to buyers.

Renovate for a return – The rule of thumb is to make changes to your property that will give you ideally five times the return.

Garden – Trim the lawns and tidy the garden. This will be a prospective buyer’s first impression of your home. Make it a good one.

Walls – Make sure the walls are clean. Grubby little hand marks may be an unpleasant fact but they’re some of the worst offenders in taking the edge off an otherwise attractive home.

Gutters – Make sure there are no leaves hanging over the edge, no peeling paint, or water stains. While you’re at it why not brush under the eaves for cobwebs?

Garage/Shed – Clean out the garage and shed. They’re the places where you’ve thrown unwanted goods over the years.

Windows – Open the windows. The brighter the rooms the better, so always leave blinds and curtains open.

Flowers – Flowers set the scene. People often put flowers out for visitors. A prospective purchaser is a very important visitor!

Kitchen and Laundry – Special attention needs to be paid to these areas. Clean the oven, polish the sink, and give your cupboards a clean.

AUCTION ACTION

Riverside property once worth hundreds now worth millions. WORDS: Steele Taylor.

AUCTION RESULTS

Ariverside

property once bought for a pittance has sold for millions of dollars.

It’s believed the 546sqm block was initially purchased for $386 in 1966 and, after staying in the same family for six generations, the land and its original home was sold for $3.3m.

The home was sold well above the undisclosed reserve price, by HOME Sunshine Coast’s Rebecca Fletcher and Alan Riley. Located at 14 Harbour Parade, Buddina, in the tightly held ‘golden triangle’, the property fronts Mooloolah River and popular La Balsa Park.

“It was pouring rain, but it was a great auction,” Mr Riley says of the Sunday event that still attracted nine registered bidders and a large crowd.

“It’s an original home – I guess it’s a knockdown – so this was land value fetching a street record.”

The house had been used as a holiday home. It’s unclear what the new owners, who are local, will do with their new property.

“I think they’re going to sit on it and hold it for a bit,” Mr Riley said.

The property is in a prime position by

Mooloolah River. The location was a huge selling point.

“It’s about the best spot on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Riley says.

“Buddina, La Balsa Park and the harbour … it’s pretty special, and properties don’t come up that often at Harbour Parade anymore.”

Mr Riley says there is still strong competition for properties in great locations, despite a nationwide slump in property sales prices.

“The last one along here (No. 9 Harbour Parade) sold for (a then street record) $2.4m last year, and it was comparable. That was in a hotter market than we’ve got now, but this property still sold for a million more,” he says.

“So, the properties there are more and more sought after.”

Interesting fact peeps - the ocean covers 70 percent of the earth and is home to 94 per cent of all species of animals in the world. Scientists estimate it has over one million different species. However, most of them (95 per cent) are invertebrate animals that don’t have a backbone, such as jelly fish and prawns. Fun conditions but small surf.
